Does Your Dog Really Need to Eat Organic Food?

As health-conscious humans, we're constantly sifting through the research about whether organic food is better. And as pet parents, we always want to put the best in our pups' bowls. But does organic matter as much for dogs, or is it just another marketing ploy? After doing a lot of digging, I discovered that it's often not all it's cracked up to be for pups. Here's what you need to know before buying:

"Organic" dog food is not well regulated
One of the biggest issues with buying your pup organic is that, unlike for human food, there aren't great standards in place: the USDA has yet to define "organic" as it applies to pet foods, so the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) sets the standards for the National Organic Program (NOP), and the individual states are supposed to regulate them

An "organic dog food" label can be misleading
Technically, the NOP mandates that if companies want the coveted organic seal on the food, at least 95 percent of the food must be organic by weight. Labels can say they're "made with organic ingredients" if at least 70 percent of the ingredients are organic. Here's where it gets tricky: pet food companies can say they're organic even when their food doesn't contain organic ingredients because no agency requires proof of the pet food health claims.

It may be "organic," but still not healthy
Unfortunately, being "organic" does not guarantee that food is good for your pup: Even if what you buy does contain organic ingredients, they may have been heavily processed in order to make the food shelf stable (thus stripping them of their nutritional value.) Plus, according to Greg Aldrich, PhD, research associate professor and pet food program coordinator at Kansas State University, it's difficult to secure the raw ingredients to produce a truly organic pet food within the framework of the AAFCO guidelines. So the food may be organic, but not nutritionally complete.

You may be paying more unnecessarily
The word "organic" is often used to increase the seeming value of the food (and to charge you more!). But because the commercial dog food category is still lacking in strict regulations, there are some organic brands that are using chemicals and preservatives in their food. Others will slap on an organic label without being completely honest about their ingredients. So you might be paying more for food that isn't worth it.

Organic ingredients aren't necessarily better for dogs
"There is no documented positive, nutritional, health, or safety benefits to organic," Aldrich says. There have been studies about the pros and cons of grains, raw food, and specific ingredients, but research on organic ingredients in a dog's diet is surprisingly lacking. So we really don't know - they could be healthier for pups or they could be the same. What we do know? The most important thing is that your dog eat a healthy diet made with real, high-quality ingredients that are nutritionally balanced. Think about it: Would you rather eat organic gummi bears or a fresh salad with ingredients that aren't all organic? Exactly.

Wonder Woman's Themyscira May Not Be a Real Place, but This Destination Is

If you haven't seen Wonder Woman yet (spoiler: it's amazing), we can almost promise that you'll be searching one thing immediately after watching. And that's if the hidden and stunning island of Themyscira exists. While the home of Wonder Woman and the Amazons is sadly not a real place on Earth, the location where the movie was filmed is: the Amalfi Coast in Italy.

According to Radio Times Travel, director Patty Jenkins chose not to shoot in Greece or Rome, despite how Themyscira has long been characterized by Greco-Roman architecture. She thought it was too masculine and popular of a location to make it the nation of the immortal warrior women.

"When the comic originally came out, people had not traveled so extensively to Greece and Rome, so they were considered completely exotic," she told the outlet. "I wanted our Themyscira to inspire awe like it did originally: a fantastical place that nevertheless feels like it could really exist . . . not primitive but not futuristic, either."

Production designer Aline Bonetto and her location manager, Charles Somers, finally settled on Italy's picturesque and rocky coast after considering 47 countries. The Amalfi Coast fit multiple qualifications of what they were envisioning. They were filming in Europe's colder months of March and needed somewhere warm enough where the Amazonians could wear their minimal costumes, as well as a paradise with a big enough beach to shoot the battle scene with the Germans.

"Italy had beautiful weather, a beautiful blue-green sea, not too much tide, not too much wave," Aline told Radio Times. "Our effects team added some cliffs in post-production, and it was the perfect way to go."

The scene where Steve Trevor (played by Chris Pine) is soaking in the illuminating, cloud-like baths also reminded us of the "cotton castle" hot springs of Pamukkale, Turkey.

The Most Travel-Friendly Shoe's Been in Front of Your Face All Along

Most of us probably pack one too many shoes for vacation. And - dare we say this out loud - we hardly ever wear all the options we cram into our suitcases. We know this isn't the most convenient way to travel, especially when you go abroad and need room to bring back souvenirs. That's why we challenged ourselves: find one shoe that does the work of 10 pairs.

After browsing several blogger feeds (because these ladies are the ultimate jet-setters), we've concluded that all fashion girls really need is a cute, sturdy pair of ankle boots. We prefer a flat style for trekking hills or stomping down the road, but a tiny heel is comfortable too if you're city-bound. Scroll on to see all the outfits you can create with these boots alone, then shop some options before your next getaway.

Selena Gomez's Edgy Jumper Is Something We Could See Cher Horowitz Wear

Selena Gomez continued to show off her ever-changing sense of style around New York City, attending The Weeknd's concert in Brooklyn in a look straight from the '90s. The "Bad Liar" singer wore a red tee with a white collar under a fake leather miniskirt jumper with Gucci sneakers.

According to her makeup artist Hung Vanngo, Selena only gave her team 15 minutes to get her ready for her boyfriend's show, yet managed to pull together a serious cat eye and edgy outfit without a problem. After the show, Selena changed into a way sexier and a little less comfortable outfit, slipping into a sheer Alexandre Vauthier skin-tight dress and Jimmy Choo heels. Scroll ahead to check out Selena's concert look and find a few pieces that'll allow you to copy it by this weekend.

9 Things You Need to Know Before Your Teen Watches The Handmaid's Tale

If you thought 13 Reasons Why was the only show you'd have to carefully discuss with your child, you might want to cancel your family's Hulu subscription.

While the hit Netflix show covered such dark topics as bullying, sexual assault, depression, and suicide, Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale is quickly becoming the new series to worry parents. The show - which forecasts a dystopian future plagued with infertility in which women who can bear children are stripped of their rights and enslaved - might not seem like teen fare, but it's actually based on a 1985 book by Margaret Atwood that has been a prominent fixture on many high school reading lists . . . and which has seen a resurgence in readership since the presidential election.

If your kid has shown an interest in seeing the book brought to life on the small screen, there are several things you should know first.

  1. The show hits on the current political climate of our nation. In both the book and TV adaptation, the US is overthrown by a group of religious fundamentalists, who form a theocracy called the Republic of Gilead. In this new nation, fears of terrorism are stoked and the rights of certain classes of people - namely women and gay people - are stripped. They aren't allowed to work, vote, or even read. To many liberal critics, it's a cautionary tale for America in 2017. In early episodes, there are flashback scenes to women's rights marches and protests that feel almost documentary-like in tone. Still, when the trailer for the Hulu series first aired, conservative groups commented that they thought it was an anti-Donald Trump show. Depending on the political leanings of your household, certain plot points (for instance, those surrounding reproductive rights) will likely bring up questions from your child about what's right and wrong.
  2. Biblical references abound. It's fair to say that those running Gilead impose an extreme interpretation of the Bible on its society, and while some might deem the show anti-Christian, it's generally interpreted as being antifundamentalism. Still, if you follow a Christian faith, you'll certainly notice familiar references and jargon that you might have to put in context. A benign example? Domestic servants in The Handmaid's Tale are called Marthas, a word which comes from scripture about a woman named Martha who helped her sister Mary following the birth of Jesus. Also: the Old Testament story about Jacob and his barren wife, Rachel, is taken quite literally, and the spy-like military "Eyes" are akin to the eyes of God, always watching.
  3. There's explicit violence and suicide. In addition to implicit references (blood-stained walls), sweeping scenes show hangings, beatings, and torture.
  1. There are complicated rape scenes. What might make rape scenes in The Handmaid's Tale particularly confusing for younger viewers is that they don't fall in line with what many teens understand about rape and sexual assault today. Because the handmaids - women forced into a cult-like group who, every month, participate in a government-sanctioned procreation "ceremony" to eventually give birth to a healthy baby for their designated family - don't fight back or say "no" when they are engaging in sex, it might seem consensual. But they are still prisoners held against their will, and it's worth explaining the distinctions.
  2. In an early episode, there is also the implication of female genital mutilation. It's a deeply disturbing yet subtle reference which most teens might not pick up on. Use your discretion on whether it's something they are ready to discuss.
  3. There's strong language. Profanity might be the least of your concerns at this point, but it's worth noting that R-rated words are used repeatedly throughout the series.
  4. It opens the door to conversations about women's equality and what's at stake. Whether or not you have sons or daughters, it's worth reminding your kids that this is a work of fiction and that gender roles, while they exist, do not mandate what they are able to achieve. Certain plot points can offer easy segues into discussions about the history of the civil rights movement and women's suffrage. It might be worthwhile to discuss that while The Handmaid's Tale isn't reality, there was a time when similar restrictions were enforced and how important it is to continue to fight for what is right.
  1. The series is going to veer from the book. If you're clutching a copy of the book as a reference or if your child was a devoted reader, prepare for some surprises. Although the tone and scope of this fictional universe is accurately brought to life, the story is evolving in new ways each week. The series has already breezed through certain events in the novel (there's an early scene in which the handmaids kill a rapist that actually doesn't appear until the final chapters of the book), and a lot of the characters' former lives are depicted in ways the book doesn't detail. The show is also renewed for an additional season, which means the story may continue on past where the book ends.
  2. It might become part of your child's curriculum. In the 1990s, the book became a popular inclusion on many an English syllabus, and backlash inevitably followed with parents and advocacy groups challenging its merits. In fact, it's now considered one of the most banned books in American high schools. With the timing of the series alongside tense national discourse, it's worth finding out if your kid's school plans to discuss the work, and how.

This 1-Year-Old Clapping Back at Her Dad Is How We Wish We Handled Confrontation

Wish you were better at confrontation? Take a few pointers from 2-year-old Jordan. The girl's mom, Brittany Lott, filmed the "father-daughter" altercation when Jordan was just 1 year old, but after posting it on Twitter last week, the girl's sassy moves have gone viral.

In the video, dad Ammons Dinkins tells his daughter not to clap her hands at him. Her reply? Clapping her hands while saying, "I don't wanna hear it!" Bold move, baby!

Lott said the two are "inseparable" but that they "fight like an old couple." And by the end of the hilarious minute-long clip, it's clear who's won this round.

Fashion Girls Are Wearing Mismatched Shoes on Purpose - and It's Genius

Believe us when we say that wearing mismatched shoes is the next big trend. It's a move that started on the runway at Céline and was repeated by fashion houses like Moschino and Calvin Klein. Each label has its own take on the style, whether it's by juxtaposing buckles on the shoes or incorporating interchangeable straps, like the widely popular Miu Miu ballet slippers.

The mismatched theme was apparent at both Spring and Fall shows, which provided bold forecasts for footwear in 2017. As we predicted, this cool trend is already traveling to the streets and the red carpet. Ahead, check out some stylish women who have pulled off the look without hesitation. Then, the next time you get ready to put on a pair of shoes, consider mixing 'em up (literally).

The 1 Thing Hugh Jackman and His Wife Do on Sundays to Strengthen Their Marriage

Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness have been married for 21 years now, and the secret to their long-lasting relationship is actually quite simple. The Australian couple spoke to People at the National Night of Laughter and Song event on Monday and revealed their bonding ritual. "We meditate together," Deborra-Lee said. "And sometimes we have friends over to do it, too. It's a lovely Sunday-morning thing. Everyone comes over, and then we have breakfast."

The Logan actor first fell for the actress while working one of his first acting jobs on the Australian TV show Correlli. "She was the star and I had this major crush on her," Hugh told Ellen DeGeneres in 2016. "Everyone did. The whole crew had a crush on her and I was so embarrassed by that." The couple has two kids together, Oscar, 15, and Ava, 10, and by the looks of it, they're still going strong.

A Judge Called a Rapist a "Good Man" While Sentencing Him For 11 Counts

One would imagine that a repeat history of sexually abusing and assaulting family members would disqualify a person from being considered "extraordinary" and "good." But Fourth District Judge Thomas Low used those exact words to describe the convicted rapist standing before him on Wednesday in Provo, UT.

According to The Salt Lake City Tribune, Low "became emotional as he handed down a prison sentence" to former Mormon Bishop Keith Robert Vallejo, who was convicted of 10 counts of forcible sexual abuse and one count of object rape.

The judge stated: "The court has no doubt that Mr. Vallejo is an extraordinary, good man. But great men sometimes do bad things," reports The SLC Tribune. Vallejo's repeat abuse of two women (including his sister-in-law) is certainly extraordinary . . . in the disturbing, negative sense of the word.

Low's description of the convicted felon as "good" is a slap in the faces of his victims. That's why one of those victims, Julia Kirby, plans to file a judicial complaint against Judge Low.

"If he really, really cared about me or about the fact that this person was a criminal, he wouldn't have that kind of sympathy. It was shocking to me for that reason," Kirby said following Low's shocking courtroom comments.

Judge Low has faced criticism for his handling of the Vallejo case since before the inappropriate sentencing hearing commentary, particularly after allowing the former bishop to return home on bail to be with his wife and children, even after he was found guilty. Low's behavior regarding this specific case has resulted in a reported 40 emails, six voice mails, and multiple Facebook messages to the Utah Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission.

How Michelle Obama Really Feels About Barack Wearing the Same Tux For 8 Years Straight

During her eight years as the First Lady, Michelle Obama wowed us time and time again with her stunning style. When she wasn't sporting elegant floor-length dresses for special occasions, you could find her keeping it cool and casual in one of her more dressed-down outfits. We've spent our fair share of time fawning over her best fashion moments, but the former FLOTUS just revealed an interesting tidbit about her style that we'd honestly never considered - until now.

When Michelle made an appearance at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in California, she got real about the "unfair" difference between her and Barack's fashion choices. The mother of two candidly admitted that her husband wore the same exact tuxedo and shoes for every single state dinner, a glamorous affair in which the head of government from another country visits the White House for a formal meal.

Michelle described how she, on the other hand, was scrutinized by the media for every outfit choice at these events. "This is the unfair thing . . . no matter what we do, he puts on that same tux. People take pictures of the shoes I wear, the bracelets, the necklace," she said at the conference. And yet, it was never publicized that Barack somehow got away with sporting the same tux throughout his presidency.

Watch the video below to hear Michelle openly discuss the biased coverage of her fashion choices, and then catch a glimpse of her state dinner looks to see exactly what she means. Note Barack's never-changing tuxedo as you scroll.

Hands Down, These Are the 14 Best Dry Shampoos on the Market

I'll be honest: When dry shampoo first bursted onto the beauty scene, my initial thought was something along the lines of "WTF?!" I couldn't wrap my head around how I could possibly cleanse my hair with a few quick sprays and no suds or water. But as soon as I tried it out for myself, I immediately understood exactly why there's so much hype around the product. The stuff really works.

Since I hopped on the bandwagon among other beauty mavens, dry shampoo has managed to give my greasy strands a second life the morning after sweaty college parties and during those frigid Winter weeks when I simply can't fathom the idea of wetting my hair.

To date, I've tried a handful of brands (my all-time favorite being Not Your Mother's Clean Freak Dry Shampoo!), but I'm always game to switch things up and try new products. So I reached out to my fellow editors to learn about their favorite dry shampoos, and it's safe to say I'm about to spend my entire paycheck on trying out their suggestions.

These heaven-sent hair saviors range from affordable drugstore finds to slightly more expensive options, all promising to salvage your mane in a pinch. Ahead, shop 14 editor-approved dry shampoos you should definitely consider adding to your beauty arsenal.

How 3 Women Made the Same Outfit Work For Day and Night

Misha Nonoo's Easy 8 collection is so obvious, every designer should have picked up on the idea. But alas, Misha has completely owned the concept, for which she's created eight crisp wardrobe basics in black and white: a mod-inspired dress, trousers, a blazer, a skirt, a turtleneck, a collared tank, a simple button-down, and a sleek jumpsuit. The fact that she's proved they can be mixed and matched into 22 different looks confirms these are true essentials - and really all any woman needs to stay chic.

What Happened After 1 Flying Mom's Breast Milk Tested Positive For Explosives

Before a recent flight to Los Angeles, one mom wasn't just preparing for her 3-month-old's first flight, she was also getting ready to make the journey solo. In order to help with this nerve-racking endeavor, the unnamed mom did her research and tried to cover all of her bases by bringing frozen breast milk as well as pumping four ounces before going through security.

She explained that Amelia can be picky with breastfeeding, so she wanted to have options during the flight. According to the mom, going through security took longer than expected because of issues with passengers before them, so Amelia was getting hungry and fussy by the time it was their turn to be screened. "Once I got through the metal detector and started collecting my things, I was directed to another area where TSA needed to inspect something inside my bag," she shared on Breastfeeding Mama Talk's Facebook page. "I figured it was the frozen breast milk. That cleared right away, but they were having problems with my four-ounce bottle of fresh milk."

At this point, she explained, Amelia was "really starting to lose it," so she asked the TSA agents if she could just stand there and feed her the bottle. "Nope," she wrote. "They put it in a machine and it somehow tested positive for explosives."

Additional TSA agents were called over and even though Amelia was "making all of the motions of desperately needing to feed," they made her put the upset child in the stroller while they called a woman over to give her a "detailed" pat-down. "[Amelia] lost it. She just started screaming and screaming," she wrote. "I started crying because I couldn't do anything, looking down at her while the TSA agent took her sweet time with a very detailed pat down."

When she finished, the mom was allowed to hold Amelia but couldn't leave until they tested the gloves. "Finally, they came back with a negative result. I was forced to dump the bottle of breast milk," she wrote. "I grabbed my stuff and walked over to the nearest place to sit, Amelia screaming the whole time."

Finally able to feed her, the mom immediately sat to try to soothe her baby but another TSA agent quickly approached. "[He] came up to me and asked if he could find me a cover while I breastfed. No thanks, I told him," she wrote. "He tried to argue, but I said she doesn't like having her head covered while feeding. Besides, she's almost done."

After hesitating, the employee finally gave up. "We caught our plane to LAX, where I found a wonderful nursing room to feed her the next meal. I've read so many stories of other women having issues, and really never thought I'd end up having such a hard time myself," she wrote. "Thank you, TSA for an experience I'll never forget!"

This Is, by Far, the Most Insane OITNB Recap Video You'll Ever Watch

Keeping track of every storyline on Orange Is the New Black is practically a full-time job. There are all of the will-they-or-won't-they relationships (*cough* Piper and Alex *cough*), the hilarious ups and downs between friends, and, oh yeah, the shocking deaths, tear-jerking scenes, and jaw-dropping cliffhangers. It's a lot. Thankfully, the brilliant minds at Netflix decided to recap every season thus far in anticipation of the new episodes with a handy video. The only catch? All of the characters are made of yarn. It's the weirdest (and also cutest?) thing you'll watch today.

Intrigued by effortless outfit making and enamored by the clean lines and neutral palette of the clothes, which retail from $95 to $695, three POPSUGAR ladies did a little shopping. Creative Director Maggie Ha, Executive Style Director Dana Avidan Cohn, and Fashion Editor Sarah Wasilak chose their favorite pieces and took them from a.m. to p.m. - or, in other words, from the office to a night out. Scroll to see how we transformed Misha's must haves and you'll instantly be convinced you need them, too.

This Romantic Wedding Is Your Ultimate Inspiration For an Outdoor Ceremony

How do you even begin to describe such a dreamy wedding? Polinas and Robertas chose to tie the knot on Pawley's Island, SC. The couple invited just 10 guests all from different countries; they also incorporated their Russian and Ukrainian traditions into their big day. Polinas's mother brought the bride a traditional Ukrainian flower headpiece as well as her custom-designed wedding gown from Russia. To top it all off, the minister who officiated the ceremony took a few lessons online so he would be able to speak a part of the ceremony in their native language.

The dessert table at the reception included both a traditional and Ukrainian cake. The table the guests sat at featured a silver tea service, and the couple provided a silver Russian samovar (tea urn). The family also laid out a variety of Russian candies and cookies featuring Oreshki, a cookie baked in a walnut mold and filled with dulce de leche. The couple ended the night by dancing to "Unforgettable" by Nat King Cole under a crystal chandelier hung in a 300-year-old oak tree overlooking the rice marsh near the plantation. Check out every unforgettable detail - your Pinterest board will be full by the time you're finished.

Mom Wows Internet With a Life-Changing Baby Hack That Costs Just $12

If, like most moms, you find yourself constantly washing bottles, looking for clean ones despite that, and dealing with at least one landslide of said bottles out of the cabinet a day, this mom's hack is about to wow you. Using just a $12 shower caddy, Brooke McDaniel has completely changed the bottle game in her household. Because she has two kids using bottles right now and says she doesn't have enough time to wash all the bottles they'd need every 24 hours, she keeps her big stash on the shelves of the caddy, then uses the hook on the bottom to hang pacifiers and teethers.

GENIUS.

This Strange Yet Genius Hack Ensures You Can Take a Shower and Keep Your Cat Eye

http://ift.tt/2s2gvSf

It's a pretty common dilemma we all face at one point or another: It's Friday evening and you rush home after work to freshen up before happy hour. You take one look in the mirror and realize dry shampoo just won't do the trick and that you desperately need to wash your greasy hair. But that means you run the risk of totally botching your makeup in the shower, and you don't possibly have enough time to perfect your cat eye again before dashing off for your discounted margarita. So what's a gal to do?

One genius girl has the perfect solution: wear goggles in the shower! Lauren, a 22-year-old student who lives in Texas, made the internet simultaneously LOL and say "why didn't I think of that sooner?" when she shared her no-brainer makeup hack online. In her first picture, she donned a pair of swimming goggles and captioned it "when u have to wash your hair but ur makeup is fly af," while the second snapshot captured her post-shower with her flawless makeup perfectly intact sans smudges and smears. Genius!

When she posted her hack on Tumblr, it went totally viral, amassing more than 90,000 notes to date, which means nearly 100,000 people either liked or reblogged her images. She told Buzzfeed News how she got mixed reviews from other Tumblr users (some praised her creativity while others said she should've just used dry shampoo in the first place). Regardless, we give Lauren an A+ for innovation, and we'll definitely be trying this trick in the near future.

James Corden Pays Tribute to His Hometown After the London Bridge Attack

James Corden is taking The Late Late Show to London this week, but before kicking things off, he took a moment to pay tribute to the lives lost during the London Bridge Terror Attack on Saturday. "Some people might say it's a strange time to do a variety show from this city - I couldn't disagree more." As he walked down the rainy sidewalk, he explained how proud he was to be able to show off his hometown's beauty, diversity, and it's stoic determination to not let anything stand in its way. "This is not a country that feels afraid," he added.
