After decades of activism on both sides of the issue, proponents of marriage equality won this battle in the culture war, and emotional celebrations erupted across the country. Finally, love won and same-sex couples had equal dignity in the eyes of the law.
The Supreme Court decision lines up with the mood of the country. Public support for gay marriage is at an all-time high, according to a new Gallup poll. Today, 64 percent of US adults say it should be recognized legally. In just 20 years, there's been a dramatic shift. In 1996 the number was flipped, with 69 percent of US adults saying same-sex marriages should not be legally valid.

Same-Sex Marriage Is the Law for Now
Here's some good news. While President Trump has the power to appoint conservative federal judges, that might not be enough undermine the right to same-sex marriage quite yet. "Public support is important," explains David Cruz, a law professor at the University of Southern California. "US history suggests that courts interpreting the constitution - including the Supreme Court - do not deviate too dramatically from public opinion for prolonged periods of time." In other words, if public support for gay marriage is a given, there's a high chance the courts won't get in the way.
Given this reality, Cruz believes the right of same-sex couples to get married is not in immediate danger. The Supreme Court would have to overrule its previous precedent, which rarely happens. But Cruz says it could if Justice Anthony Kennedy, who wrote the marriage equality decision, was to retire and be replaced by a strongly anti-LGBTQ judge. For now Neil Gorsuch's appointment to the Supreme Court by itself won't change things, since he replaced Justice Antonin Scalia, who dissented from the marriage ruling in the first place.
A constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman could also undo the 2015 Supreme Court decision. While it was proposed in the GOP platform, Cruz doesn't see it happening any time soon, either. It's not easy to amend the constitution - it requires two-thirds of each house of Congress and approval from three-fourths of the states. Such an effort was unsuccessful during the George W. Bush era, which Cruz calls the height of the gay marriage scare. So it would be harder today. Rather, politicians are likely posturing when they discuss an amendment, rather than proposing realistic policy. Considering this, it's likely imminent threats to LGBTQ rights will come in less explicit forms.
Religious Liberty Laws Are the New Battle Ground
Gay marriage rights may be settled law, but the fight isn't over. Legal experts like Cruz believe sweeping religious-exemption laws are a greater threat than court decisions. Many state religious exemption laws permit people, churches, nonprofits, and sometimes corporations to receive exemptions from laws that "burden" their religious beliefs. These types of law make it legally acceptable to discriminate against LGBTQ people.

"Scores of bills have been introduced in state legislatures, and there's also the proposed federal so-called First Amendment Defense Act," Cruz explains. The latter would prohibit the federal government from taking action against any business or person that discriminates against LGBTQ people (and anyone who has sexual relations outside of marriage for that matter) for religious reasons. These types of "religious liberty" laws could also trump existing state and local laws that forbid discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. "Many of these bills are likely unconstitutional," Cruz notes, "but if passed, we'd need to see judges continue to stand up for separation of religion and government and for equal protection for LGBTQ people." And that's where the real threat of Trump comes in. Trump has the power to appoint judges from the Supreme Court on down to the federal trial judges who would be hearing these religious exemption cases.
Professor Tia Gaynor, who researches public administration at Marist College, agrees that LGBTQ Americans could be negatively impacted by a more socially conservative agenda under Republican leadership, even if same-sex marriage remains the law. She points to Trump's recent Executive Order Promoting Free Speech and Religious Liberty as laying the groundwork for what may come. While the order was largely symbolic, it signals how lawmakers might roll back protections for LGBTQ Americans under the guise of religious freedom. "Some may take these religious freedom protections to mean that they can discriminate against individuals who identify as LGBTQ without any repercussions. Even if there are consequences for these organizations, they are not immediate, where the trauma associated with being discriminated against is."
Some federal laws, like the Affordable Care Act, do have built-in provisions forbidding discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Yet agency staff and judges appointed by Trump could interpret those protections as narrowly as possible. And Congress could eliminate those regulations with an Affordable Care Act repeal law. LGBTQ Americans have long faced hurdles to getting fair and adequate health care, so turning back the protections of Obamacare could do real harm.
What You Can Do
Voting is the first step, especially in those off-year local races.

Gaynor sums it up: "The way I see it, as long as the public is largely silent, yet privately supportive, with or without laws, the discrimination and marginalization of the LGBTQ community will persist - and perhaps in this Trump Era grow." We can't let that happen.

Remember When Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey Were Basically a Real-Life Barbie and Ken?
The '90s were chock-full of glorious celebrity couples, but the '00s also had its fair share of gems. Why I Decided to Get Married When Donald Trump Won the Election
If you asked me how my life has changed since Donald Trump's win, I would pause, gather my thoughts, and finally say: "I'm OK." Those two words may sound underwhelming, but "OK" is how I've been trying to feel for months, because I'm undocumented and I've been afraid.
About three months after Trump was announced as president-elect, I got married to my boyfriend of several years, but on this night of Trump's election victory, we weren't engaged yet.
On the evening of Nov. 8, 2016, Andrew and I headed to a bar for some drinks. For some months, we had been experiencing feelings of disappointment. Neither candidate was a favorite of ours, so we couldn't say we would be celebrating Hillary Clinton's election. We simply wanted to be there to cheer for a win against the pervasive hate we thought Trump was promoting.
Andrew and I began to tread lightly around the idea of marriage mere moments after it became clear Trump was close to having enough votes to guarantee him the presidency. He began with, "Isabella, we have to." To which I responded, "No, we don't." I was shaking my head and still trying to understand what CNN was showing me on the TV screen of our local bar.
To me, Andrew is "the one." We had wanted to marry eventually, but we never imagined that Trump would win the presidency - and that because of my undocumented status we would be talking about marriage now, in an almost urgent way.
That same night Andrew dropped me off at home and kissed me goodnight. He held me and told me everything would be all right. I wanted to hold on to those words and believe him.
The next morning, I woke up to a feeling of numbness that made me wish I could sleep away the next few days. I texted Andrew, "It wasn't a dream." I laid in bed and negative thoughts began to surround me. "Great. Back to the pre-DACA days."
Knowing that we'd soon be living in a world where Trump was POTUS made me fear for the millions of people who are undocumented, like my parents, and those who, like me, are protected by the Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals (DACA) - an executive action signed by President Barack Obama in 2012 that allows some undocumented children of immigrants to reside legally in the US and work with a permit that expires every two years.
Before DACA, I was a highly insecure young woman unsure of my future. For me, being undocumented meant that I'd continue to live with obstacles: driving without a license and being afraid of getting pulled over, trying to find a better job without papers; it was all stressful.
We would not allow Trump to divide us, separate us, nor dehumanize us. We would marry for love.I worried about being good enough for everyone, from my family to my friends to the government. Before DACA, I figured that if I wasn't worthy of the opportunity to apply for residency and citizenship, then I wasn't a qualified human under the government's view. Going back to my pre-DACA days isn't what I considered an option. I couldn't deal with seeing myself like that again, like an individual who isn't worthy enough.
Some days after the general election, Andrew and I came to the agreement that we would get married. We knew marriage would allow me to apply for permanent residency. We talked extensively about the pressure to marry sooner than we would have liked, but we held on, and still do, to the truth: we would not allow Trump to divide us, separate us, nor dehumanize us. We would marry for love.
When fear is tugging at your sleeves and harassing your mind, you begin to question if you have a choice at all. My world was changing. Texts, calls, and conversations about wedding planning were something I wanted to fully embrace and run away from at the same time. At my core, I knew Andrew was "the one," but I was scared of the decisions I had to make.
I prayed extensively to God, asking for signs that this marriage was meant to be. When we had to find an apartment, we found a cheap one with a parking spot. Just there, in that moment, I was finally able to experience every single feeling I had managed to push back until I found a place in my life where I had nothing to plan. I laid there crying. It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This Bouillon, and I Use It in Everything
Do you want to know my secret flavor starter? Better Than Bouillon! I keep it stocked in my fridge at all times. BTB is not gourmet by any means, but its savory umami-ness has made me addicted. It's my go-to soup starter. A tiny dollop always goes in a pot of beans, lentils, rice, or other grains. I put it in tomato sauce. I've tried it in oatmeal. Thanksgiving gravy always has a little bit of it. Heck, I can't think of a single savory recipe I've made where this hasn't made an appearance at least once. It's just so easy and perfectly flavored.
Though I've tried all the flavors that BTB offers, Vegetable Base is king. It contains all the components that make food taste awesome: soy sauce, salt, sugar, etc. A small jar costs $7, which may seem steep, but it lasts for several months and an upward of nine-and-a-half quarts of broth. Consider: those quarts of premade broth usually cost several dollars, and the truth is, you're paying for water. Though I didn't initially buy BTB for any other reason than its flavor, I love the added bonuses of saving money and and cutting down on package waste.

Why I Decided to Get Married When Donald Trump Won the Election
If you asked me how my life has changed since Donald Trump's win, I would pause, gather my thoughts, and finally say: "I'm OK." Those two words may sound underwhelming, but "OK" is how I've been trying to feel for months, because I'm undocumented and I've been afraid.
About three months after Trump was announced as president-elect, I got married to my boyfriend of several years, but on this night of Trump's election victory, we weren't engaged yet.
On the evening of Nov. 8, 2016, Andrew and I headed to a bar for some drinks. For some months, we had been experiencing feelings of disappointment. Neither candidate was a favorite of ours, so we couldn't say we would be celebrating Hillary Clinton's election. We simply wanted to be there to cheer for a win against the pervasive hate we thought Trump was promoting.
Andrew and I began to tread lightly around the idea of marriage mere moments after it became clear Trump was close to having enough votes to guarantee him the presidency. He began with, "Isabella, we have to." To which I responded, "No, we don't." I was shaking my head and still trying to understand what CNN was showing me on the TV screen of our local bar.
To me, Andrew is "the one." We had wanted to marry eventually, but we never imagined that Trump would win the presidency - and that because of my undocumented status we would be talking about marriage now, in an almost urgent way.
That same night Andrew dropped me off at home and kissed me goodnight. He held me and told me everything would be all right. I wanted to hold on to those words and believe him.
The next morning, I woke up to a feeling of numbness that made me wish I could sleep away the next few days. I texted Andrew, "It wasn't a dream." I laid in bed and negative thoughts began to surround me. "Great. Back to the pre-DACA days."
Knowing that we'd soon be living in a world where Trump was POTUS made me fear for the millions of people who are undocumented, like my parents, and those who, like me, are protected by the Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals (DACA) - an executive action signed by President Barack Obama in 2012 that allows some undocumented children of immigrants to reside legally in the US and work with a permit that expires every two years.
Before DACA, I was a highly insecure young woman unsure of my future. For me, being undocumented meant that I'd continue to live with obstacles: driving without a license and being afraid of getting pulled over, trying to find a better job without papers; it was all stressful.
We would not allow Trump to divide us, separate us, nor dehumanize us. We would marry for love.I worried about being good enough for everyone, from my family to my friends to the government. Before DACA, I figured that if I wasn't worthy of the opportunity to apply for residency and citizenship, then I wasn't a qualified human under the government's view. Going back to my pre-DACA days isn't what I considered an option. I couldn't deal with seeing myself like that again, like an individual who isn't worthy enough.
Some days after the general election, Andrew and I came to the agreement that we would get married. We knew marriage would allow me to apply for permanent residency. We talked extensively about the pressure to marry sooner than we would have liked, but we held on, and still do, to the truth: we would not allow Trump to divide us, separate us, nor dehumanize us. We would marry for love.
When fear is tugging at your sleeves and harassing your mind, you begin to question if you have a choice at all. My world was changing. Texts, calls, and conversations about wedding planning were something I wanted to fully embrace and run away from at the same time. At my core, I knew Andrew was "the one," but I was scared of the decisions I had to make.

The Stunning View You Get at Horseshoe Bend Is Unlike Any Other in the World
The Grand Canyon is a natural wonder that can literally take your breath away when you first lay eyes on it. Horseshoe Bend, a rocky island-like formation of sandstone surrounded by the Colorado River, stuns in beauty.

Openly, Honestly, Publicly: How We Live Our Lives With Pride
Matt Dallas: When it comes to my upbringing, I have a very large family. We're kind of a very motley crew as it is, and I was very fortunate that I was just . . . comfortable. I was raised to be very much who I was. I always found myself off with my female cousins, whether that meant dressing up, having dance parties, or whatever. That was the world that I immersed myself into, and I think I was lucky that I didn't have a father who was trying to pull me out of it.
The Summer before my freshman year of high school, I made two guy friends. They were gay, and I basically just spent that Summer hanging out with them, and that was when I realized like, "Oh, gay is a thing. That's what's happening here." That's when I knew I was different, and as I entered into high school, it all started really clicking and making a lot more sense.
Blue Hamilton: As for me, I grew up in a very small town called Florissant in Colorado. I think, even today, the town has like 100 people in it. It's a very small community up in the Rockies, and so there was no LGBTQ community to speak of. I literally only remember one woman there that we suspected was a lesbian. I didn't have the resources. The internet wasn't there.
Yeah, but you know what's really interesting? I've been a huge Madonna fan my whole life, because my sisters were into her and, you know, it was the '80s. She was a huge influence on my life, because I was a big fan. And I mean, look at who her audience is.
It's just funny to me that I had the power of an artist with a voice - and the impact that she made in my life - when I didn't have anybody else. To bring it back to what Matt and I do as far as being out there and being visible, that's another reason I feel like it's really important. Even though the internet's out there and the world is a great big open oyster now, there are kids in towns who don't have those people around them. So at least they have these resources to go out and look at.
MD: In terms of Pride, I've been to two, and they were both in San Diego. I have to be really honest, I was really turned off by LGBTQ Pride, even in my early 20s. It just didn't feel like it necessarily represented me. Don't get me wrong, it was cool to see everybody coming together. I remember I saw Cyndi Lauper, and to have someone who's that famous that's there and supporting us was very meaningful to me. But as I got older, I just started to feel conflicted.
I celebrate my pride in a different way. Pride is something that we live every day.BH: I've been to a couple, and I have to echo you. I think that the Pride festivities that I've been to do represent a specific portion of the community, but they didn't necessarily represent me. I went in LA, and it was years ago. It was fun, and I didn't really see anything that I was appalled by, but I didn't feel like I fit in. What I took out of it was that pride, for me, was not going to a parade. I celebrate my pride in a different way. Pride is something that we live every day and I don't need to go to a parade. That's how I felt at the time. To me it means to just being true to who you are and living by example.
MD: Of course, I want to say that I don't mean to pass any sort of judgment on somebody who enjoys Pride. You should be who you are and do what makes you happy, but that just wasn't me. I obviously feel the same way as Blue: my pride is about living openly and honestly and publicly and living by example.
That being said, I do think there's something very powerful in like a giant mass of people coming together, like the Women's March. That sent a huge message, and I think that that's very impactful. So, I think a Pride parade sends a very loud, important message, and it's a very powerful tool. But I also think it's time that we reconsider what that looks like in the context of Pride.
I think a Pride Parade sends a very loud, important message.I will say I regret that I wasn't able to be at a Pride after the Pulse nightclub shooting. I wanted to be able to be a part of that. To come out and show the support and say, like, "We, as a community, are coming together to say that we will not stand for this."
Like I said, though, my pride is in my life. I felt the best when I came out publicly. I had spent so many years so afraid of coming out. It had been about 10 years that I spent really conflicted about who I was and being open and honest publicly. When I did come out, I remember sending the tweet and then just like refreshing. Like, "Oh, there's no taking it back now." Even though there was like fear and nervousness in the moment, there was a huge release, and I felt very proud of myself that I was able to fight back and take a stance for who I was. It really was a moment of "Wow, I did something really cool and I'm really proud of myself." It felt special to get to be a part of something, to stand up for something that I had been so afraid of, that I had been hiding for so many years.
BH: I mean, there's nothing that necessarily comes to mind for me, nothing that big. But there's one huge memory that sticks out for me. We were at Disneyland last year waiting in line. A 13-year-old kid came up to us with his mom, and they basically told us that this kid came out and feels comfortable because of watching us on YouTube.
MD: And it was the mother's reaction!
BH: I mean, yeah, but I guess it was more the kid for me. But the mom was very emotional and, like, teary-eyed and was just super appreciative and nice. It was her story, I guess, but it was about the kid.
MD: For me what I thought was cool was that the mom was saying that, as supportive as she was of her son, she was just always so fearful for what his life might look like, and she just was afraid that he wouldn't be able to find happiness, but when he made her sit down and watch our videos, she was like, "Oh, my son will be able to have this life and will be able to have the life I always dreamed he would have." And she felt like she didn't have to be afraid anymore.
As much as I've shared to the contrary, I am excited for Pride this year. I feel more open and honest with who I am than I ever have been in my life, and I feel like we are at such a crossroads in our society. I mean, we've had so many breakthroughs. You see this real shift in society, so it is exciting to see where the next Pride Months over the next few years are going to take us. I think it's an exhilarating time because it can go any direction, and I think there are now so many voices that it can be something really interesting and special.
BH: I'm actually excited for it. I feel I'm more aware of it than I've been in the past, and I feel we're able to make an influence and be a part of it on a different level than before. It's time to get started.

I have put my hair through a lot over the years. I've done many colors of the rainbow with a harsh bleaching in between, and while my hair is pretty durable, the color has taken a bit of a toll. There was actually a point a few years ago where I dyed my hair pink, and when I wanted to change colors, I couldn't actually get the bleach to take the pink out. Naturally, I then thought it would be a good idea to just keep bleaching it over and over in hopes that the pink would come out. I don't know how I still had hair or skin at the end of that ordeal, but somehow I pulled through.
But now, I've discovered the secret to changing my rainbow hair without wreaking havoc on my hair and scalp. Enter Pravana's Pure Light Crème Lightener.

I started with the fade out of my Lime Crime pink ombré and a pretty terrible texture from hot-tool abuse. (I live for my flat iron; I can't help it.) I put my hair in the hands of Pravana and its experts, and hair color superwoman Lissette Cruz got to work at taking my color out. She used the Pure Light Crème Lightener to remove the color, and it literally took less than five minutes.
The lightener has a coconut oil base so it's ultranourishing on your hair, which is exactly what you need if you frequently change your colors. I asked her how it works, and she said the lightener opens up the hairs and pulls the color out gently rather than harshly stripping it away like some other products. The lightener can lift up to five levels - and fast.

Check out that amazing light gray color we ended up with! Lissette even joked that she wouldn't have been able to get that color if she tried, and had I not wanted brand-new mermaid hair in the end, I would have been tempted to keep this. Alas, this was a stepping stone. But normally after taking color out, my hair ends up a bit brittle and very fragile. It can handle it, but it has its limits.
After the Pure Light Crème Lightener, though, my hair was soft and smooth and ready to take on a whole new life.
And that's where colorist Jordan Glindmyer came in. I told this self-proclaimed mermaid that she could do whatever she wanted with my hair. After toning my hair with ChromaSilk Express Tones in Smokey Silver, Jordan pulled together a color palette fit for a mermaid. Or a unicorn, whichever you prefer.
"I wanted to work with the existing regrowth, so I utilized violet on the root and did diagonal and horizontal sections throughout the head, alternating formulas on her ends to create a flawless blend regardless of how she chooses to part or style her hair," Jordan said.
The colors she used were Neons Neon Pink, Vivids Violet, Neons Neon Blue, Vivids Yellow, Vivids Clear (an additive to lighten/pastel creative colors for more customization), Vivids Moody Blue, and Vivids Magenta. And while it sounds like that's a lot going on, the finished look was flawless.

Not only is the color amazing, but seriously, the lightener boosted my hair health in a crazy way. I have naturally tangly and difficult hair, but the lightener took care of all of that. 6 Theories About How Orange Is the New Black Season 5 Will Start
Last season of Orange Is the New Black ended with a bang, almost literally. In the final moments of the finale, everything descends into chaos as the inmates riot. Daya gets a hold of CO Humphrey's gun and points it at his face, and that's all we know. In the months since we finished season four, we've locked in on new season five details. Now, with a handful of new pictures and an intense new clip that shows the gripping first minute of the premiere, we're determined to figure out how this all ends up. Let's go over all the possibilities.
1. Daya Shoots Humphrey
This has to be the most obvious outcome. She's already pointing the gun, and Humphrey is right there. Everyone knows Humphrey is an awful, awful man. Plus, I mean, we're sure Daya still has some hard feelings after Bennett broke her heart. Maybe she's got some issues to work out. So, for all those reasons, she fires.
2. Someone Else Fires an Entirely Different Gun
Just because we hear a gun fire, it doesn't necessarily mean it's Daya's. After all, with such an intensely escalating situation, it's possible someone calls for backup. Perhaps there's a chance someone else arrives on the scene with another gun, deems Daya a danger, and fires to put her out of commission.
3. Daya Shoots the Ceiling to Shut Everyone Up
In the first minute, it's clear Daya is overwhelmed. It seems like it's so loud, she can't hear herself think. Maybe she just fires the gun into the ceiling so everyone stops screaming at her. Then, with a clear head, she can make her choice - which, really, could be any of these other options.
4. Another Inmate Grabs the Gun and Shoots Humphrey
With so many angry, riled up inmates surrounding Daya, what's to stop someone else from grabbing the gun and shooting Humphrey? After all, he's forced Maritza to eat dead flies at gunpoint, and he's just forced Suzanne and Maureen into a crazy brutal brawl. It's safe to say a lot of these inmates want him dead, so if Daya doesn't do it, someone else will.
5. Daya Accidentally (or Deliberately) Shoots Someone Else
Daya has been underestimated and marginalized by many other inmates for plenty of seasons. That might explain why she just might snap and shoot someone else entirely. Then again, as we mentioned above, this is a high-stress situation, and she's clearly overwhelmed, which is why she might just shut her eyes and fire at will, no aim required.
6. No One Fires a Gun
Listen, we hate to bring this up, but it's a possibility. Maybe it's all just a fake-out, just a juicy sound effect to keep us on our toes. Since the teasers have yet to show Daya (or anyone) firing a gun, we have to consider the possibility that it doesn't happen. Since Daya is taking so long to decide what to do, maybe she gets intercepted by someone else before she has a chance to make her decision. It would certainly be the lamest outcome, but it's not impossible.
One way or another, we'll have our answer when Orange Is the New Black returns on June 9.

I Found a Pair of Denim Shorts to Make Me Love Cutoffs Again
As much as I love to shed the layers when the temperature rises, denim shorts are my greatest fear. Like everyone, there are little things I don't love about my body, and my legs are two of those little things. They really are little - I'm only 5'1", and yes, like many women, I have cellulite and stretch marks. Depending on the cutoffs that I'm wearing, these imperfections are more or less visible and I might feel more or less confident in my own skin.

Being the brave, adventurous, optimistic editor that I am (at least five people who read this will shake their heads and laugh when they see I called myself optimistic), I was determined to find shorts I liked. Witness the Exact Moment a Mom's Dying Wish Was Fulfilled at Her Daughter's Wedding
St. Mary's Hospital recently granted one woman's dying wish by organizing a special garden wedding ceremony so that she could witness her daughter getting married. Debbie Nelson from Madison, WI, was diagnosed with terminal cancer and told the local news station that she arrived at the hospital feeling "very sick, but knowing that I had one goal. And that is to see my daughter get married."
Debbie said she "never expected" the surprise wedding to happen as quickly as it did. All it took was 24 hours for the staff and volunteers to transform the hospital's healing garden into a gorgeous wedding venue for her daughter, Melissa.
"Unbelievably happy and thankful for everything that everybody did in one day. I'm just kind of blown away," Melissa said after tying the knot with her husband. "People came from everywhere and offered to help and made this, like, one of the best days of my entire life," Debbie added.
