Everything We Learned From the Comey Hearing

This post will be updated continuously throughout Comey's testimony today

The most anticipated day in recent political history - one that appeals not only to news junkies or political pundits, but basically anyone who loves televised drama - has finally arrived:former FBI director James Comey has taken the stand before a Senate committee to testify about his meetings, interactions and conversations with President Donald Trump. The Senate is seeking answers in hopes to further their investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election, and those of watching from home (or, sneakily, at work) are looking to get answers to the many, many questions that have been on our minds since Comey was fired back in May.

For those not in DC – where bars opened early to host viewing parties across the city, and the conversations are almost exclusively about the testimony in hand – we're watching and taking notes on what it is exactly that we should be taking away from the hearing and what it is we need to know going forward for the future of the investigation and for the presidency writ large.

So, without further ado, Here's what we've learned today:

  • Russia definitely interfered in the election, but Comey doesn't think they touched the actual votes. At this point we all agree that there's no question that Russia did something last year, but Comey added today that he was "confident" Russia didn't alter any voting data once ballots were cast by the American people.
  • When Comey was fired, Trump wasn't under investigation. This is the point that the Trump team has been harping on, and quite honestly the reason we've gotten to the point we're at today. When asked explicitly if Trump was under investigation at the time that he was fired on May 9th, Comey answered simply; "No." We're probably all ready to move on from this now.
  • Comey documented his meetings with Trump because he was afraid that Trump would lie about what went down. Comey had nine meetings with Trump, a number that seems extraordinarily high when put against the fact that he only spoke with Obama twice over the span of three years. But the most damning information came in the form of his reasoning for why he began documenting these meetings, starting from the very first meeting in Trump Tower: "I was honestly concerned he might lie about the nature of the meeting and it led me to document it."
  • We finally found out what Trump whispered in Comey's ear back in January "I'm looking forward to working with you."
  • It's very likely that special prosecutor Robert Mueller is investigating Trump for obstruction of justice. When asked by Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Richard Burr whether he was fired in order to hinder the Russia investigation – ie, commit obstruction of justice – or to help protect Michael Flynn, Comey indicated that Flynn was already a known issue for the administration and that while he didn't think it was the express intent, it was likely something that would be investigated. "I don't think it is for me to say whether the conversation I had with the president was an effort to obstruct," Comey said. "I took it as a very disturbing thing, very concerning, but that's a conclusion I'm sure the special counsel will work toward: to try and understand what the intention was there and whether that's an offense."
  • Comey was just as perplexed by his firing as we were. Initially it was said that he was fired because of his handling of the Clinton email scandal, but Trump cast doubt on this rationale when he suggested that it was to "relieve pressure" on the whole Russia debacle. "The explanations, the shifting explanations, confused me and increasingly concerned me," Comey said, before confirming that he now believes that Trump's rationale probably was the root cause. "I take the president at his word that I was fired because of the Russia investigation."
  • He doesn't know if there are tapes of the Trump/Comey conversations, but he'd be a happy man if they exist.

"Lordy, I hope there are tapes," Comey said with regards to the now-infamous tweet in which Trump appeared to threaten the former FBI director.

Watch Neymar Attempt a Goal From Roof to Roof Across Hollywood Boulevard

Only Jimmy Kimmel would think about having a professional soccer player attempt a goal shot from one rooftop to another one across Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, and only Brazilian soccer hero Neymar could make that shot - OK, fine, Leo Messi can probably do it, too. While you're probably now thinking, "What? Did he make it?," we're going to spoil this for you and say yes, he did!

With Kimmel's sidekick Guillermo Rodriguez acting as a goalie (in a full highlighter-yellow outfit), Neymar attempts to kick the ball over the major street, cutting it a little too short the first two times but nailing an excellent goal on the third try. It's really something you need to see.

How Michelle Obama Really Feels About Barack Wearing the Same Tux For 8 Years Straight

During her eight years as the First Lady, Michelle Obama wowed us time and time again with her stunning style. When she wasn't sporting elegant floor-length dresses for special occasions, you could find her keeping it cool and casual in one of her more dressed-down outfits. We've spent our fair share of time fawning over her best fashion moments, but the former FLOTUS just revealed an interesting tidbit about her style that we'd honestly never considered - until now.

When Michelle made an appearance at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in California, she got real about the "unfair" difference between her and Barack's fashion choices. The mother of two candidly admitted that her husband wore the same exact tuxedo and shoes for every single state dinner, a glamorous affair in which the head of government from another country visits the White House for a formal meal.

Michelle described how she, on the other hand, was scrutinized by the media for every outfit choice at these events. "This is the unfair thing . . . no matter what we do, he puts on that same tux. People take pictures of the shoes I wear, the bracelets, the necklace," she said at the conference. And yet, it was never publicized that Barack somehow got away with sporting the same tux throughout his presidency.

Watch the video below to hear Michelle openly discuss the biased coverage of her fashion choices, and then catch a glimpse of her state dinner looks to see exactly what she means. Note Barack's never-changing tuxedo as you scroll.

Jennifer Lopez's Nickname For Alex Rodriguez Will Make Your Heart Pitter Patter

Jennifer Lopez has a nickname for Alex Rodriguez that we can't get out of our heads. The 47-year-old multitalented star posted two comments under a professional head shot the 41-year-old former baseball player shared on his Instagram, saying "Macho bello cono" (we think she meant coño, by the way), followed by just a few kiss-print emoji. While everyone on Instagram is freaking out about J Lo's Spanish, we took a deeper look at the meaning behind everything.

This isn't the first time that J Lo has used "macho bello" to describe ARod, which leads us to believe that's her sweet pet name for her boyfriend. When the couple was on their way to the Met Gala, Jennifer posted a selfie from the car and captioned it "Me and my macho bello..." That's quite the nickname, huh? These two have been dating for a few months and don't seem to be going anywhere.

Mom's Reaction to Delivering a 13-Pound "Toddler" is Priceless

Although Chrissy and Larry Corbitt were already parents to four kids, their previous experiences didn't prepare them for the major surprise that accompanied baby Carleigh's delivery: she weighed in at 13 pounds and five ounces.

"When the doctor was pulling her out of me I just start hearing them all laughing and excited in the operating room. They were throwing out numbers and when they showed her to me and said 13.5, I couldn't believe it," the Florida mom told ABC News. "It looked they pulled a toddler out of my belly. She's so big."

Even though Carleigh was born already weighing almost double the weight of an average newborn baby, her parents shared that she was actually delivered a week early. "It was so funny because she had a C-section so all the blankets were over her so you couldn't see what was going on," Larry said. "The doctor said, 'Oh my gosh, she's going to be 15-pounds.' I remember the doctor saying, 'I don't think this baby is going to end. Are there two of them?'"

Carleigh's size has presented a bit of a problem for her parents: everything they bought in preparation, from diapers to clothing, is too small. "She's like a 6 month old baby … everything we got to prepare is just out the door," Larry said. "The clothes she had on yesterday was a 9-month outfit. She's huge."

Carliegh's newborn photos have since gone viral and from her sweet cheeks to her endless rolls, it's hard not to fall in love with every ounce of her! "She's just filled with rolls. She's just a big squishy baby. She's so adorable," Chrissy added.

The Moment That Inspired Prince Harry to Create the Invictus Games

While preparing for the 2018 Invictus Games in Sydney on Wednesday, Prince Harry opened up about the guilt he felt when he was forced to leave his first tour of Afghanistan, where he was serving as an officer in the British Army, when his location was revealed by the press in 2008. "I could no longer stay with my soldiers, as it would have put them at greater risk," he said during his speech. "It was a decision over which I had no control, but the guilt of having to leave my guys behind was something I found hard to swallow, as anyone who has served will understand." He added that the event set him on the path to create the Invictus Games to help wounded veterans and their families.

"In these challenging times, we can all benefit from positive and inspiring stories from which to draw strength," he said. "The Invictus Games shows us that it is possible to overcome adversity and that the impossible is possible, if you have the will." His recent trip to Australia is just one of the many ways he has been giving back these past few months. Aside from meeting with the team who will represent the UK at the Invictus Games, he also paid tribute during a recent polo match in Singapore to the victims of Saturday's London Bridge attack, which left seven people dead and 30 injured.

Zoe Saldana's Gorgeous Performance in Sia's "Free Me" Video Will Bring You to Tears

The only thing more beautiful than Sia's new single, "Free Me," is the song's music video. Julianne Moore narrates and Zoe Saldana stars, putting her years of dance training to work as she performs gorgeous choreography from Sia's longtime collaborator, Ryan Heffington. The stunning visuals go hand in hand with the song's deeper meaning, which aims to spread awareness for the #endHIV campaign and benefit the Abzyme Research Foundation (all proceeds of the song will be used to advance a new potential HIV/AIDS cure). Just like she did in her video for "The Greatest," Sia manages to blend a cause close to her heart with her music in the most perfect way.

The Simple (and Adorable) Trick 1 Dad Used to Calm His Little Girl's Crying Fit

Who Exactly Is Jane Davis on House of Cards?

It's no surprise to anyone who watches House of Cards that for Claire Underwood, using people to her advantage is simply par for the course - no matter the consequences. This is especially true in season five as Claire gains more and more sway in Washington, while earning more significant political experience. One individual who becomes very useful to Claire very quickly is newcomer Jane Davis (played by Patricia Clarkson).

Davis is introduced midseason as the Deputy Undersecretary of Commerce for International Trade. During a meeting with Acting President Claire Underwood in episode seven, they are interrupted by a bomb scare suspected to be ICO's doing, and taken by Secret Service to a secure underground bunker. It's never really explained how Davis has the clearance to stay with Claire during the emergency, and she says she was simply told to go to the bunker by the agents. That's just the tip of the iceberg. Davis offers her help in gathering information on ICO through her "connections" with private contractors in the Middle East and is able to discover the likely location of the terrorist group's leader. Now that's a good first impression.

Claire clearly recognizes Davis's potential as an asset, and throughout the rest of the season, Davis is in on much of the Underwood's plotting to preserve their power. She doesn't shy away from getting involved in the web of deception and corruption that comes with working for the Underwoods. But this is House of Cards, after all, and Davis may simply be acting on behalf of the White House for as long as it benefits her own interests.

We know Claire is anything but naive, but she has a lot on her shoulders now that she's officially president, and her reliance on Davis during her rise to power could have unforeseen consequences. While Davis is helping the Underwood administration now, who knows what could happen if someone with her influence and connections decides it's no longer in her interest to support Claire?

Video of Toddler Drowning While Wearing Floatie Proves You Can't Take Your Eyes Off Kids in the Pool

If you want to relax by the pool, hire a babysitter, because there's a video circulating that proves parents can't take their eyes off their kids – even for a few seconds – no matter how prepared they think they are.

A short video clip from a community pool shows a separate, shallow kiddie pool with a handful of children wading around. One toddler is seated in what seems to be a full-body intertube flotation device, likely purported to provide extreme safety. However, just a few seconds into the video, the child falls forward, head in the water, and the weight of the floatie prevents the kid from being able to pull back and out of the water. The toddler is seen kicking and thrashing.

Thankfully, an older girl in the kiddie pool notices and pulls the flotation device upright and saves the child from drowning.

The whole incident took less than 10 seconds but was a startling reminder of how fast things can go awry and how no amount of safety measures are better than an attentive parent in the pool.

12 Things We Know About the Qatar Crisis So Far

On Monday morning, four countries - the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Egypt - announced that they'd be cutting all diplomatic ties with the State of Qatar. The fallout started immediately and has escalated throughout the week. Here's everything we know so far.

  • Soon after the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Egypt announced that they'd be cutting ties with Qatar, Yemen joined them as well. As of Wednesday morning, seven nations have cut ties with Qatar: the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, Yemen, The Maldives, and Mauritania. Libya has also claimed to have cut ties with Qatar despite having no diplomatic representation in the country.
  • The countries cite Qatar's support of the Islamic Brotherhood as their reason for cutting them off.
  • The UAE gave Qatari citizens living in the country 14 days to leave, while Qatari diplomats living in the UAE were asked to leave within 48 hours. UAE nationals are not permitted to travel to Qatar or to pass through in transit.
  • The most immediate effect of the move has to do with air travel: hundreds of flights are being rerouted, as Emirates Airlines, Etihad, FlyDubai, and Air Arabia all halted service to and from Qatar on Tuesday morning.
  • Qatar Airways is also barred from entering airspace in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain. Oman and Kuwait remain the only two countries in the GCC open to Qatar Airways. Qatar Airways flies to the US, Europe, Australia, and Asia, and with Eid holidays coming up, many hours will be added onto flight times as Qatar Airways' planes are rerouted to fly over Iran.
  • "All customers booked on affected flights will be provided with alternative options, including the option of a full refund on any unused tickets and free rebooking to the nearest alternative Qatar Airways network destination," the airline said in a statement. Qatar Airways is working to transfer tickers to their partner airlines, including: airberlin, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, LAN, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Royal Jordanian, S7 Airlines, SriLankan Airlines, and TAM Airlines.
  • Middle East Aviation noted how badly this could affect air travel in the region.
  • Food is a major concern for people living in Qatar. Nearly 40 percent of all the country's food comes via their land border with Saudi, which was closed on Tuesday morning. As residents rushed to supermarkets to stock up on essentials, shelves around the country were empty hours after the announcement was made. Eighty percent of all of Qatar's food is imported from other countries in the Gulf.
  • On Wednesday morning, Al Arabiya reported that UAE residents who showed support for Qatar on social media could face anywhere from three to 15 years of jail time, as well as a fine of AED500,000 ($136,124) .
  • Ships flying the Qatari flag have been banned from entering ports in Fujairah and Jebel Ali in the UAE, as well as in ports in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. This prevents many items, including food, from being imported to Qatar.
  • On Tuesday, the main office for Al Jazeera news was closed in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Al Jazeera is a Qatari state-owned news outlet, and the electronic editions of Al Jazeera have also been blocked in the UAE. Qatari-owned BeIN Media Group channels have also been blocked in the UAE.
  • Qatari troops have been removed from Yemen.

Stay tuned as we update this story as the situation unfolds.

Trying to Grow Out Your Hair? This All-Natural Oil Might Be Your Miracle Product

You are not alone if you've ever regretted cutting your hair the second you stepped out of the salon. Fortunately, there's a hack for that. On YouTube, beauty blogger Irene Vila shared the all-natural routine that helped her hair grow after a major chop.

At the start of the video, Irene explains that her remedy might not work for those dealing with damaged ends or severe breakage. That being said, she insists that it's effective for those who'd like to speed up the growing process and treat mild split ends.

For starters, Irene recommends her three favorite all-natural oils that are best suited for hair masks: virgin coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, and avocado oil. While other people may have different experiences, her personal favorite is the extra virgin olive oil as she found it to be more effective and easier to remove than the other two.

After committing to extra virgin olive oil, Irene said she began applying it to her hair regularly and saw significant hair growth within a month. She then demonstrated her method around the 10-minute mark in the tutorial. To really apply the olive oil all over her strands, she flips her hair over in the sink, gradually massages the oil in from the roots down, and then directly pours the oil over certain areas that are more difficult to reach. Irene then typically secures her hair in a bun using a clip and waits 25 minutes. She did admit that it takes two showers to fully remove remnants of the oil.

As you'll see in the tutorial, the result is pretty spectacular - her ends look like a perfect paintbrush! Watch it in its entirety, above.

Vicente Fox Is Telling Trump What Else $25 Billion Will Pay For Instead of a "F*cken Wall"

Former Mexican President Vicente Fox is not holding back in a video to US President Donald Trump. Fox partnered with Super Deluxe to repeat the message he has widely given for the past few months (even holding up a sign to further prove his point): "Mexico will not pay for the f*cken wall."

Fox says "Donald, under no circumstances will we pay for this stupid, useless, racist monument," later providing very insightful facts about what other things can be done with the $25 billion the wall between Mexico and the US would cost - like clean water for the entire world for three years! A Funny Thing Happened When Chris Christie Defended Trump's Alleged Comments to Comey

On Wednesday, June 7, former FBI director James Comey released a jaw-dropping, seven-page opening statement to the Senate about his relationship with President Trump, one day before his highly anticipated hearing before Congress. Comey will reportedly testify that Trump did, in fact, ask him to drop his investigation into former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, who was under investigation for misleading Vice President Mike Pence and lying about his ties with Russia before his resignation.

In an interview with MSNBC, New Jersey governor Chris Christie came to Trump's defense and chalked up the president's request that Comey drop the Federal Bureau's investigation into Michael Flynn as "normal New York City conversation" - but the internet wasn't having it. Immediately after the interview aired, Twitter users weighed in with their own versions of "normal New York City conversation" that are both hilarious and brutally honest, just like the city itself. Keep reading to see what we mean.

Lizzie McGuire's Butterfly Hair Clips Are Back and Better Than They Were in the '90s

Growing up, there was rarely a day I left my house without one (or, like, five, if we're being honest) of my go-to butterfly clips securely fastened in my hair. I had quite the nifty collection of the creature-inspired accessories: an oversize glittery rainbow one (obviously my favorite), a sparkly silver option, a light blue one, and a whole stash of those smaller multicolored plastic clips that were perfect for holding back my bangs. As someone who wore uniforms to school every day, butterfly clips were a way for me to stand out in the crowd and add my own personal flair to things.

My love for these insect-like adornments only grew stronger as I saw some of my favorite leading ladies sporting them on TV. Most notably, Hilary Duff (aka one of my childhood idols) regularly rocked butterfly clips while in character as Lizzie McGuire, the ultimate '90s babe. Plus, not one but two cast members on The Princess Diaries appeared in the film with these clips in their hair. Mandy Moore's cool-girl character had a few fastened in her hair when she belted out "Stupid Cupid" in the beach scene, while Lilly Moscovitz also wore them in her cropped 'do, thus proving any gal could rock them, popular or not.

Fast forward to 2017, and my sacred butterfly clips that were once practically glued into my strands are unfortunately most likely buried in a landfill far, far away. But man, do I wish I had those babies in my bathroom drawer right now, because it looks like the clips are officially back on the beauty scene. That's right, ladies. Thanks to a sweeping obsession with all things nostalgic, butterfly clips, much like hair scrunchies, have been gloriously resurrected, and they're even better than they were in the '90s.

A prime example of this hair accessory's comeback? Vanessa Hudgens sported a handful of DIY-ed butterfly clips at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards, proving that they'll make anyone look like a glamorous boho goddess rather than a little girl stuck in her preschool days.

A handful of retailers like Free People and Urban Outfitters noticed this throwback trend bubbling up again and have started selling a few chic options to let '90s babes revel in the nostalgia. But today's iterations aren't just those cheaply made plastic ones you used to buy at the drugstore - these new and improved versions are more modern and sleek representations of the elegant insects.

Ready to dive (or shall I say, flutter) back into our favorite decade and decorate your 'do with cute barrettes galore? Read on for the chicest, festival-season-approved butterfly clips that are now on the market. This one's for you, Lizzie McGuire.

Victoria Beckham Basically Left the House in Spring's Coolest Pajama Set

When you spot Victoria Beckham in a must-have street style look, it's likely from her line. She's been wearing her own designs since day one! While in NYC, the star casually strolled around in a loosely-fitted plaid top and trouser set, and the blue ensemble was from - you guessed it - her resort '18 collection.

The pastel color was appropriate for Spring and there was an element of comfort to the outfit, too. It was pretty much the cool-girl pajamas you wished you wore 24/7. Scroll on to see the printed monochrome look from head to toe, then shop similar plaid pieces.

Al Franken Shut Down Bill O'Reilly Back in 2003 and It's Just So Satisfying

Before Google, it was a lot easier to lie about your success and get away with it. But if you're Bill O'Reilly and Al Franken is on your case, it wasn't so simple. Back in 2003, then-comedian Al Franken was promoting his satirical book about the conservative media, Lies: And the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right and he happened to share the stage with O'Reilly at BookExpo.

The clip begins with O'Reilly aptly explaining how he didn't have to "retract one story" throughout his six and a half years on The O'Reilly Factor. "If I'm going to be accused of being a liar, now you better have something there," said O'Reilly.

Well, as it turns out, Franken did have ample evidence to proclaim O'Reilly a liar - and he does it on stage, right in front of a fuming O'Reilly. Taking the stage after O'Reilly's remarks, Franken described how he heard O'Reilly repeatedly laud his then-show, Inside Edition, for winning three Peabody Awards. O'Reilly was defending the show from being labeled as "tabloid TV." Franken, astounded by Inside Edition's journalism achievements, decided to investigate.

"So I go to the Peabody website and look for Inside Edition Peabody Awards and there aren't any," Franken explained. "Then I call the Peabody people and I said, 'Did you guys give Inside Edition a Peabody?' and there was some laughter."

After following a lengthy trail of sources, Franken discovered that neither O'Reilly nor Inside Edition ever won a Peabody. Inside Edition did win another journalism award, the Polk Award, a year after O'Reilly left however. "Usually I find that if you find someone made a mistake, if you ask them to correct it, they do correct it," Franken joked. "Not in this society anymore. So Bill, I'm sorry to call you one of the many people who do lie in my book."

"See, this is why you don't retract things," Franken bashed. "You just continuously lie." When Franken's comments conclude, O'Reilly attempts to defend himself by silencing Franken, there's a brief spat, and it's clear Franken has gotten under O'Reilly's skin: he's only capable of responding by telling Franken to "shut up."

It's also clear that Franken has a point: pundits, particularly on the far right, have long manipulated information when it benefits them or their cause. Alternative facts are not new; they simply have a new name.

A Deaf Singer's Emotional Performance Leaves America's Got Talent Audience Sobbing

Another day, another amazing America's Got Talent audition. Following the internet's fascination with pint-sized ventriloquist Darci Lynne Farmer, singer Mandy Harvey performed an original song on Tuesday night that reduced practically everyone in the building (and also out of the building, including yours truly) to tears. Before she sang, the 29-year-old introduced herself to judges Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Mel B, and Howie Mandel, and with the help of an interpretor, explained that she completely lost her hearing a decade earlier because of a connective tissue disorder.

"I've been singing since I was 4," she said. "I left music after I lost my hearing, and then figured out how to get back into singing with muscle memory, using visual tuners and trusting my pitch." Then, she pulled out her ukulele and blew everyone away with her song, "Try," which she wrote to inspire herself not to give up on music. As soon as she finished, Cowell, who it's worth noting has never looked happier during an audition, immediately gave her a standing ovation and pushed the coveted Golden Buzzer. Grab a box of tissues (yes, a whole box) and watch her performance above!
