Why July Is a Great Month to Be a Fan of Oreos and Baskin-Robbins

Did you know July is National Ice Cream Month? It goes without saying that Baskin-Robbins is participating, and Oreo fans will want to listen very closely. On July 14 between noon and 5 p.m., participating locations will dole out free samples of its new Mint Chocolate Chip Polar Pizza (double fudge brownie crust, mint chocolate chip ice cream, Oreo cookie pieces, fudge, and marshmallow topping). We had the opportunity to try Polar Pizzas, and it's basically like eating ice cream on top of a cookie dough crust. You will not be disappointed.

If that's not enough Oreo for you, July's new Flavor of the Month is All About Oreo (a chocolate malt ice cream with an Oreo frosting ribbon and three different kinds of Oreo pieces: fudge-covered, peanut butter, and classic). But wait - there's more! Baskin-Robbins will end the month on a sweet note. On July 31, the "Celebrate 31" promotion will offer all regular and kids-size scoops for $1.50. What a perfect opportunity to try all 31 flavors.

2 Reasons to Make Smoothie Freezer Packs

You want a healthy breakfast, but you also want it to be fast and simple. Smoothies are a great option over a quick bowl of cereal, especially if you use frozen fruit and boxed or bagged prewashed spinach. But if you're into switching up your greens and using other fruit such as pears and avocado that you can't find in the freezer section, then making a smoothie in the a.m. could turn into a 15-minute production.

Check out this time-saver: Prep all the fruit and greens you use in your smoothies, and freeze individual serving sizes in quart-sized freezer bags (glass mason jars work well, too). Note any ingredients that need to be added to the blender, and your smoothie is as good as done.

Here's an example that includes:

1 cup kale: 33 calories

1 cup spinach: 7 calories

1 banana: 105 calories

6 strawberries: 23 calories

1/2 cup blueberries: 42 calories

1/2 cup mango: 50 calories

Add to the blender:

3 oz. vanilla Greek yogurt: 65 calories

1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder: 45 calories

1 cup water: 0 calories

Total calories: 370

Want to know what produce freezes well? Check out this handy guide to freezing fruits and veggies that's actually designed for those making their own baby food. As far as yogurt is concerned, freezing could destroy some of its billions of beneficial cultures, so you're better off adding it to the blender prior to making your smoothie. Nut butters as well as dry oats and seeds such as flax or chia freeze well, but they can also be quickly added to the blender when you're ready to make your smoothie.

You can prep a whole week's worth on Sunday night so a nutritious fiber- and protein-packed breakfast is just minutes away. It's a great way to not only ensure a healthy start to your day, but you'll save money since you can buy greens and fruit in bulk and won't have to worry about them spoiling by the end of the week. Aim to use your smoothie freezer bags within a few weeks to avoid freezer burn.

What Dresses You Should Really Wear to an Indian Wedding

When you're invited to a wedding (and if you're anything like us), your first thought is usually about what you're going to wear. And if the wedding you're attending happens to be an Indian wedding, things can get a little tricky. During my sister's wedding in Dubai, the question I got asked the most was, "What's appropriate to wear to an Indian wedding?" For most of my friends, this was their first time attending an Indian wedding, and they didn't know where to start. If you're not wearing a traditional Indian outfit, there are still a ton of gorgeous gowns you can wear to be the best dressed guest at the wedding.

Before we dive right in, here are a couple of pointers you should keep in mind when choosing a dress. First, the two colors you should stay away from are white and black (of course, this varies case by case, but these colors signify mourning or bad luck, so it's better to stay away from them). Instead, have fun with bright, bold, cheery colors, and don't be afraid to accessorize or choose something sparkly. And lastly, if you're unsure if what you're wearing works, the best thing you can do is ask the bride - after all, she knows best. Here's our roundup of the best dresses you can wear to an Indian wedding.

How Drama Played a Role in Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance's 20-Year Romance

Image Source: Getty / Allan Tannenbaum

Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance will be celebrating 20 years of marriage this October, and the couple has long been a shining example of black love in Hollywood (as well as a shining example of how black doesn't crack). While many would assume that the two met on the set of a film or through famous friends, Angela and Courtney's initial encounter happened way back in the '80s, when they were both enrolled in one of the country's most prestigious acting programs.

Courtney and Angela first met while studying at Yale School of Drama - fellow alums include Meryl Streep, Liev Schreiber, and Lupita Nyong'o - and ran in the same circles as students. They became best friends, and eventually their bond grew deeper and blossomed into a romance. Angela graduated in 1983 with a master of fine arts degree, and Courtney followed with the same honor in 1986. They tied the knot on Oct. 12, 1997, and after struggling to have children for a handful of years, they welcomed twins, son Slater and daughter Bronwyn, via surrogate in 2006.

In addition to building a family, Angela and Courtney have worked together on a number of rather dramatic projects: the 1995 political drama Panther; the 2003 slave documentary Unchained Memories; a 2005 production of His Girl Friday at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis; and 2008's crime thriller Nothing But the Truth. They even authored a book together, Friends: a Love Story in 2007.

We especially love seeing these two supporting each other on the red carpet at high-profile events. Courtney was by his wife's side when she was nominated for an Oscar and won a Golden Globe in 1994 for her role as Tina Turner in What's Love Got to Do With It?, and Angela was filled with pride watching her man take home an Emmy and Critics' Choice Award for his amazing performance as Johnny Cochran in American Crime Story: The People v. OJ Simpson earlier this year.

Dad Explains Why a Toddler Having a Tantrum Is Actually a Sign of Good Parenting

We've all heard it in some capacity before (and maybe we've even been guilty of saying it ourselves) when a child is having a meltdown in public: "That parent needs to control their kids." As a parent, though, you know that's so much easier said than done. After dealing with his own toddler's tantrum at a Red Robin, one dad is sharing his opinion on public kiddo meltdowns.

"I'm stuck in the van with my toddler," starts Clint Edwards in a post to his blog's Facebook page. "We went out to dinner as a family, and she had a meltdown because mom wouldn't let her throw chicken strips. So she screamed, and screamed, and kicked and kicked, and since I was the only one finished with my meal, I had the pleasure of dragging her out of Red Robin."

The frustrated dad continues, sharing that as he carried her out, everyone he passed - mostly childless people, he assumed - stared at him with that "look that seems to say, 'If you can't control your kid, then don't go out.'"

"Well," he wrote. "No. I can't control her. She's 2 and it's going to take years to teach her how to act appropriately in public, and the only way I am ever going to teach that is to take her out and show her what's right and wrong. By saying no a million times, letting her throw a fit, and telling her no again."

The dad's post continues, emphasizing how difficult it can be to parent in these awkward situations, but that it's a process everyone's own parents had to go through with them at one point in time as well.

These lessons take patience, hard work, and real world experiences, and I'm sorry to those at the bar who got irritated by my child's fit, but you are part of this practice. Your parents did the same with you, and that's how you now know how to recognize when a child does something irritating in a restaurant. It's how you learned to look at a situation and say, "That parent needs to control their kids."

It's how you learned to be a respectable person.

Clint wraps up his post with empathy and understanding, but also drives his point home. "I get it. Kids are irritating when they are loud in a restaurant. I know. I'm living it," he wrote. "But before you get angry and judgmental, realize that what you are witnessing is not bad parenting, but rather, parents working hard to fix the situation. You are looking at what it takes to turn a child into a person."

This Is How Shakira and Gerard Piqué Fell in Love

If you've listened to the lyrics of Shakira's single "Me Enamoré," then you know a little bit about the beginning of her whirlwind romance with Spanish soccer player Gerard Piqué. The song recounts their first encounters, how Piqué was just a kid (Shakira is ten years older than him), but she fell in love with his beard and lips anyway, as they drank mojito after mojito. But there's much more to the story than that.

Almost everyone will recount, Shakira's hit"Waka Waka" was the official song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, but only real fans might remember Piqué makes an appearance on the music video for the song, as do other soccer players, including Lionel Messi. That's the day the two met.

In an interview with TV3, recounted by The Daily Mail, the FC Barcelona soccer player talked about how a simple question opened the door to their relationship: "She was already [in South Africa for the World Cup] because she sang in the opening ceremony, and I asked her what the weather was like." That was it! Shakira used that excuse to text him back every time there was a slight change in weather until Piqué suggested his team would have to make it to the final so they could see each other again. And, yes, Spain did win the World Cup that year - we're pretty sure it's because of Piqué's determination to see the Colombian singer.

Seven years later, the couple is still dating and has two sons, 4-year-old Milan and 2-year-old Sasha. Keep reading for a quick visual round-down of their relationship through the years.

These $5 Lisa Frank Makeup Brushes Will Speak to Your '90s-Loving Heart

Those of us who remember shopping at the Limited Too at the mall or watching Saved By the Bell live on TV after school (since DVR did not exist!) will love these affordable Lisa Frank-designed makeup brushes. To recap, the brushes were created by indie brand Glamour Dolls Makeup. The brand launched a Kickstarter earlier this year with the help of beauty influencer Kandee Johnson, and now the products are available to shop.

While we love the eye shadows, the brushes are standouts from the collection. First of all, they're gorgeous - with a Lisa Frank-printed handle and fluffy pink bristles. The description on the website reads: "watch how the brush hairs instantly grab color and are similar to that of a unicorn: soft, fluffy, and always cruelty-free." But perhaps the best part is that they are just $5 each!

There are two variations right now. There's a bigger sloped brush that is perfect for hot-pink '90s blush. And there's also a thinner brush for your shimmery, Mariah Carey-influenced shadows.

Shop them ahead and proudly display them on your vanity for a touch of nostalgia.

A Representative Who Doesn't Get How Sex Works Wonders Why Men Should Pay For Prenatal Care

Another day, another congressman who's "pro-life" but doesn't believe in paying for prenatal or maternity care. Representative Pete Olson of the 22nd district in Texas recently went on a radio show and pondered the question of why men should pay for "coverage [they] can't use." Not only does Olson probably need to go back to school and learn a lesson or two on biology and how reproduction works, but he's also a hypocrite when it comes to the sanctity of life.

In an interview on the Sam Malone Show on June 23, Olson spoke about the Senate's healthcare bill, The Better Care Reconciliation Act. Olson had "some problems" with the bill, including that it "still guarantee[s] coverage for 10 essential conditions." Olson's referring to one of the requirements in the Affordable Care Act, which makes insurance plans cover 10 essential conditions, including prenatal and maternity care. Olson laughed about it and said, "We have what's called an X chromosome . . . which means we can't have a baby. Why do we have to pay for that coverage we can't use?" You can listen to a clip of the moment around the 0:57 mark ahead.

NARAL Pro-Choice America tweeted about the incident and pointed out one important critical fact Olson got wrong: it's the Y chromosome that doesn't let men have children, not the X. Of course, the other contradiction in Olson's message is that he claims to be pro-life but doesn't appear to have any regard for pregnant mothers. Think that's all Olson got wrong? Nope. The new Senate healthcare bill would allow states to waive these essential benefits, anyway.

Dad's Response to His Wife Saying "This Isn't the Body You Fell in Love With"

Laura Mazza had a different body before having kids. The mom says her prebaby body "was toned, it had muscles, there were no stretch marks on my belly, none on my boobs, no gut from muscle separation." However, upon announcing to her husband one day that her body was "not the one he fell in love with," his response helped her accept her postpartum body and all of the things it has accomplished in bringing their children into the world.

In an open post to her Facebook page, Mum on the Run, Mazza shared with readers more information about the body her husband "fell in love with."

The body he fell in love with was toned, it had muscles, there were no stretch marks on my belly, none on my boobs, no gut from muscle separation. The body he fell in love with fit into tight jeans, could walk into a shop and grab any size and walk out, knowing it fit. This body now couldn't shop at those stores, and mostly wears leggings. His body stayed the same, but mine changed in every way. It isn't fair . . .

She continues, sharing the emotions she had as she opened up to her husband. "I stood in front of him, exhausted and broken, the tears welled in my eyes," she wrote. "'This isn't the body you fell in love with.' Then he said, 'You're right. It isn't the body I fell in love with.'"

Although his statement sounds like a jab at first glance, Mazza's husband continued, sharing words with his wife that are all kinds of awesome; words that all women should get to hear. "'Instead it's a body that grew our children, it fed our children, it comforted our children, it made life,'" he said. Adding: "'Your body is the one I fall in love with every day. I didn't know what love was until I saw this body and found out all it could do, so thank you.'"

Mazza's hope is that her final thoughts after hearing her husband's encouraging words will help other women feel good about their bodies that grew, delivered, and nourished their children. "Do not be ashamed of what you have, or what your mum body looks like, there's plenty of time to give up cake in the future; for now, enjoy the moments you have, and enjoy the fact that you have made something that is worth every stretch mark and every dimple," she wrote. "If you needed a reminder, this is it, this body you have now, it's worth every bit of love and more."

The Completely Addictive Method of Cooking Broccoli and Cauliflower

It won't be a challenge to eat your veggies if you try this easy technique for roasting cauliflower and broccoli. For months, a few women in our office have been praising roasted cruciferous veggies. I'm already a huge fan of baked kale chips, roasted brussels sprouts, and oven-crisped cabbage, so I'm not sure why it took me so long to try out roasted cauliflower and broccoli. Now that I have, I'm never going back to the steamed stuff. The oven morphed the little veggie trees into crisp nuggets that could almost pass for chips. They are addictive . . . don't be surprised if those around you fight for the last bites!

Here's what you'll do:

  1. Cut the broccoli and cauliflower into equally sized pieces.
  2. Spread across a rimmed sheet tray, leaving space between each floret. Drizzle olive oil across the veggies and salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Roast in a 400°F oven for 18-23 minutes, or until crispy to your liking.

Gigi Hadid's Summer Shoes Are the Anti-Sandal of the Season

A typical Gigi Hadid Summer street style look is actually pretty casual. She usually opts for functional denim, a movable top, and then throws on the covetable accessories. For a walk down the street in New York City, Gigi worked the basics, keeping her mini bag game strong with a Furla Zebra pouch and finishing with chain drop earrings.

But this is also one of the many times Gigi matched her tinted lenses to one other element in her outfit: her yellow crocodile Dr. Martens boots. (Her sister Bella also seems to be a fan of aviators like these). This simple move played up the fact that yes, it's hot outside, but Gigi's rocking her boots. Who said you couldn't invite the sunshine in sturdy footwear, rather than sandals?

I Tried a Pooping Stool and This Is What Happened

I'm pretty comfortable talking about poop. And no, it's not just because I've pooped in front of an entire hospital room while giving birth, or that I've been pooped on more than once, have accidentally stepped in a dirty diaper (also more than once), and have even taken a bath with my daughter and saw her little poop floating in the water beside me.

No, you see, since college (so for about 18 years!), I've dealt with digestive issues thanks to my nervous stomach coupled with some insanely severe lactose intolerance with a side order of sugar sensitivity. I've seen specialists galore, had to explain my embarrassing pooping details on too many occasions, and even had to have a rectal exam with my two kiddos in the room. Fun stuff. So yeah. I'll talk about pooping to anyone because I've had some pretty crappy experiences (pun intended), and if me talking about it somehow helps you, it's totally worth it.

Which brings to me one of my favorite topics surrounding poop - the pooping stool. If you've never heard of one, it is going to change your life. There's a brand of pooping stool called the Squatty Potty with an ad featuring an adorable pooping unicorn, but I just use the little step stool I got for my kids when they were potty training - it works great. I seriously think this pooping stool has become the cure to my digestive issues, and here's why.

When you're sitting on the toilet and you place your feet on the stool, it raises your knees above your hips so you can assume a squatting position. This helps to relax the puborectalis muscle that squeezes around the place where the colon meets the rectum, which allows your colon to empty quickly and completely.

Before using the stool, I used to wait until I had the urge to go, which caused bloating, gas, and feeling sluggish and just not myself. Plus that feeling would usually come at a not-so-great time, which made me hold it, and then I'd be all constipated. I remember taking my dog on a woods walk and I thought about how much better I'd feel if I, too, could poop on command. Then it dawned on me. If I wanted to be regular, I had to choose one time to go every day so my body would get into the rhythm.

First thing in the morning seemed like the best time - just go and get it out of the way. The thing is, I had a 5:45 a.m. CrossFit class, so that meant I had to get up even earlier to make sure I had 10 to 15 minutes to sit and relax. With my feet up on the stool and not even the slightest urge to go, I was amazed that within less than five minutes, it happened. It was like magic. I pooped and actually felt like I was done.

So it's been like that for seven months, and although not every morning is perfect, most are, and it's helped tremendously with easing any bloating or other digestive issues. There's nothing like the feeling of a good poop in the morning so you don't have to worry about it for the rest of the day. If you long to be regular and the idea of a pooping stool sounds intriguing, I say give it a whirl. This could be the one thing that ends your constipation for good.

How to Get a Decent Night's Sleep on a Camping Trip

This Summer, we bought a bigger tent and went camping with our two children. It's a big ritual in New York state. The public park sites fill up fast, and beyond enormous parks like the Adirondacks, there are so many smaller state parks (stocked with hundreds of tent and cabin sites). I'm not sure how people choose a family tent while still in the growing stages, but we bought a five-man for the two adults and two tiny kids, thinking we're unlikely to be taking it back country anytime soon. (Nor could we. The pack bag is giant.) We set the travel bar low and found a park 40 minutes from our house, just in case we needed to drive home in the middle of the night. The park had trails, bathrooms, loop roads, a creek, a fishing pond, and several playgrounds. Basically nature lite.

Weekend camp was, like most adventures with small children, a blast - with caveats. Because it was also a massive organizational effort resulting in late nights and little sleep. For two days, we lived outside. It rained a little, but the kids were not bothered. It was humid and hot, but they didn't care. There were plenty of deer flies and mosquitoes that went unnoticed (by them, not by me). Because there was stuff to do. Given the extra space and time, my 5-year-old mastered the art of two-wheeled bicycle riding. It was a pleasure to see her go from wobbly and afraid (yelling at me not to let go) to confidently pushing off down the road, swerving intentionally. She discovered the fun of marshmallow stick finding (and cooking and eating). The 2-year-old loved wandering around the campsite and quickly darting into the woods. She found all the dirt. The baby doll she carries everywhere found all the dirt, too. Our friends brought a dog, and she spent a fair amount of time playing in its crate. Once she actually fell asleep, long after dark, the 2-year-old slept soundly in a pack-in-play in our tent, despite the stifling humidity. We ate delicious camp food, many songs were sung, and plenty of 5-year-old jokes were told. What happens when you put two 5-year-old girls together around a campfire? Lots of potty joke songs.

Next time, I'll expect the dirt and the light sleep. I hope to be less shocked by the upfront work: I'm certain I spent about as much time planning and packing for the two-night, car-based event as I did camping. I borrowed a cooler and resurrected an old camp stove we hadn't used in about seven years. I went to buy special propane. I bought ice and marshmallows. Installed the bike rack on the car. Made lots of trips to the basement. Thought about how best to do coffee in camp (cold brew). Thought about what to eat and shopped accordingly. Realized we no longer had camping plates or cooking pots, so I packed the kidware and was glad we were going with friends. Then I went about loading the car and packing tons of toys, just in case. Since we were totally chicken about this first attempt, my daughter and I drove down alone the first night with our friends, and my husband and the toddler came down for the second night. Though I probably couldn't have gotten less sleep, even if she had come along for both. We let my daughter and her friend stay up, and they spent hours in the tent scaring each other, giggling and calling for reinforcements. Eventually I just lay down with them, and they fell asleep. I thought I might fall asleep but forgot that for the rest of the campground, the party had just begun. It was loud. I couldn't remember where I'd packed my earplugs. (Next time, they are getting taped to my sleeping bag.) A few hours later, the sun woke the girls up, and about the first thing my daughter did upon waking was burst into tears. She's not a morning person, and she's definitely less of one on little sleep. I happily took the girls down the road to the bathrooms and let them chatter loudly about toads while the partiers slept on.

Everyone explored, hiked, played, biked, and got covered in dirt. I thought I was used to dirt, but this level of dirt was shocking. Perhaps because my older daughter, in typical fashion, used the tent to execute quick wardrobe changes, thereby wearing all the clothes in her backpack in the space of one day - and soiling them all, too. The friend we joined at camp, who was a more experienced camper, had camp pants, the kind you wear every day and can convert into shorts. The dirt sticks to them less. Had I purchased a pair of camp pants for my child in preparation for this trip? Yes. They were dark blue and would have hid dirt very well, had she worn them. But they were well below her standards (brighter, softer, stripier, busier, etc). I couldn't even get her to try them on. So the camp pants, they came home clean. The overprepared parent loses again!

When we returned home on a Sunday afternoon, we could not avoid taking giant naps. Like most things, it's not quite as relaxing as camping with just adults, it's not quite as you remember it. Sitting around a campfire, sure. Sitting around a campfire with your offspring does not include the sitting part. And don't forget your earplugs. Maybe even a battery-powered noise machine.

We're going deeper into the woods in August, this time via canoe. So far, the trip has two spreadsheets, one for shared gear and one for food. I like to think that with more practice, the rigamarole of precamp stuff finding and packing gets easier. And as my campers get older, at least I'll have them tote stuff out to the car.

All We Know So Far About Kim Kardashian and Jaclyn Hill's "Secret Project"

Just last week, Kim Kardashain West launched her first line of beauty products, starting with the KKW Contour Kit. After watching the KKW Beauty Instagram story, we have a few questions.

In the story, Kardashian poses with beauty blogger and Morphe Eyeshadow Patette creator Jaclyn Hill . The two wear the flower crown filter to tease a new video of them getting ready together, which should be up on Hill's YouTube channel very soon. The story also includes a caption that reads, "Secret project."

We can't wait to see the full video and learn more about their "Secret Project." Could the 26-year-old Hill, who earned fame in part by posting makeup tutorials on Kardashian herself, be her newest collaborator?

At first glance, the swimsuit Lea Michele wore in Hawaii with her friends looks simple. It's black, sophisticated with a high neck, and it's got a cheeky cut at the behind too. But zoom in closely, and you'll see the straps on this Solid and Striped one-piece are in ivory, making for a subtle contrast. While on the beach, Lea accessorized her look with nothing but a pair of simple aviators, letting her two-tone swimsuit steal the spotlight. This Is the Best Diet to Go On (According to Harvard Researchers)

If you want to lose weight, what's on your plate is often more important than the minutes you spend in the gym. And if you want to see the most change, a 2015 study from Harvard says you should be cutting carbs, not fat.

For the study, published in PLoS One, researchers from Harvard and Brigham and Women's Hospital reviewed 53 randomized trials of over 68,000 patients who had been assigned to either low-fat or low-carb diets. They found that low-carb diets were consistently better at helping patients lose weight than low-fat diets; the participants on the low-carb diets lost 2.5 pounds more than those on low-fat diets, with the average weight loss among all groups at about six pounds.

This latest study on the weight-loss benefits of a low-carb diet adds further evidence that if you want to lose weight, ditching bread - not olive oil - can help you see success. Another recent study, for example, showed that dieters who ate fewer than 40 grams of carbohydrates per day lost about eight pounds more than dieters who were put on a low-fat diet. Other studies have shown that high-carb diets may be the real heart-disease culprit, not saturated fat. All in all, this new review is a good reminder that if you want to lose weight, you should choose a diet rich in healthy fats, lean proteins, and fresh produce. Of course, not all fats are created equal - find out which healthy fats you should be incorporating into your diet here.

12 Moves Celebrity Trainer David Kirsch Says Every Woman Should Do

They call David Kirsch "the sculpt master," and after training one-on-one in the last few weeks leading up to my wedding, I understood why. At my last wedding dress fitting, my arms and upper back were spilling out over my strapless dress.

"Oh well," I admitted to myself, "I guess I'll be a little chubby in my dress."

Then David stepped in, training me about four times per week for the two weeks leading up to the big day. In addition to doing his full-body workouts - which were always different and truly challenging - I followed his low-carb, low-fat, high-protein diet. Like any great makeover story with a happy ending, on the day of my wedding, my dress was actually a bit roomy and I felt totally confident with my shape. You can see me after my final workout (with David) in the photo above.

David is a body sculpter and also a master trainer. His résumé is quite honestly too long to list. But here are some highlights: He founded Madison Square Club, which is one of the nicest gyms I've been to in New York City. He has written five books, including the bestseller The Ultimate New York Body Plan; launched his own line of protein powders and supplements (my favorite is the A.M. Daily Detox); and trained celebrities, including Jennifer Lopez, Heidi Klum, and Liv Tyler. So getting my ass kicked by him was honestly a dream! And his regimen worked.

Since we can't all pay the big bucks or make it to NYC, he rounded up his favorite total-body toning moves for you to try at home! You can bet I'll be doing them on my own at the gym.

WTF: A Woman Was Denied a Second Job Interview For Asking This Question

fOn Monday, March 13, Taylor Byrnes tweeted screenshots of the response she received from SkiptheDishes after asking about pay and benefits following her first interview at the food delivery service in Winnipeg, Canada. "Applied for a job at @SkipTheDishes. They cancelled my interview b/c I asked about wages/benefits," she wrote in a now-viral tweet.

"Hi Victoria, I had another question that I wanted to ask you," Byrnes's initial email reads. "If I do end up filling this position, how much do you think I'll be getting paid an hour? Benefits will also be included, right? Sorry, I just thought I should ask now. Thanks for your time and have a lovely day," she concluded.

Screenshots show that Victoria responded, "Hello Taylor, your questions reveal that your priorities are not in sync with those of SkipTheDishes. At this time we will not be following through with our meeting this Thursday." In a follow-up email, Victoria called out qualities the company looks for in employees, including "hard work and perseverance in pursuit of company goals as opposed to focusing on compensation."

"For these reasons, questions about compensation and benefits at such an early stage is a concern related to organizational fit."

After the screenshots were posted and shared across social media, Byrnes received yet another response from the company, this time from its cofounder, who expressed disappointment with the way the situation was handled. The company also shared its screenshots on its Twitter page to rectify the backlash from people who were calling for a boycott of SkipTheDishes.

SkipTheDishes cofounder Joshua Simair addressed the controversy in an emailed statement to POPSUGAR, writing, "We are very disappointed in how it was handled. We do share a compensation package prior to hiring. As soon as we became aware of it on Monday, we reached out to Taylor to apologize for the email and reschedule her interview."

Simair also revealed that the company would be changing internal policies to make sure it doesn't happen again. "We've also addressed the email internally and will be providing additional training. We are very committed to our community, employees and continuing to grow and create employment opportunities in the Prairies."

Although Byrnes has received an outpouring of support for standing up for herself, there is still a dispute over whether or not her questions were appropriate to ask. Seeing as it's important for women to ask about pay upfront so that they get what they deserve, we'd say the answer is yes.

We've reached out to Byrnes for comment and will update this story if we hear back.

We're Having a Hard Time Moving On From How Cute Norman Reedus and His Son Are

You probably know and love Norman Reedus for his role as Daryl Dixon on The Walking Dead, but did you know that he's kind of a huge softie in real life? Yeah, his bromances with costars Andrew Lincoln and Jeffrey Dean Morgan are great and all, but it's his relationship with his son that truly makes our hearts sing. The actor, who is currently dating Diane Kruger, shares son Mingus with ex Helena Christensen, and from the looks of their many outings and social media photos together, they have an adorable bond. Mingus, 17, has been his dad's mini me from the start, and we're willing to bet that's only going to continue (and get stronger!) as the years go by.

Taylor Swift Is Rocking Her God-Given Curly Hair in This Twitter Video

Little brings us more joy than seeing Taylor Swift rocking her naturally curly hair and a flawless cat eye. So obviously we can't stop watching this Twitter video she made for Twitter handle, OKC Thunder. This may seem like an odd fit: Taylor on the "official Twitter feed of Thunder basketball."

Taylor created the video to congratulate NBA MVP Russell Westbrook after he accepted the the MVP award during an NBA award show on June 26. She joked: "Russell, it's Taylor, remember? I was the one who taught you how to play basketball. I remember the first time you beat me at basketball and I was very upset and you said, if you remember correctly, you said, 'You just have to shake it off.'" So essentially we have each other to thank for these careers, obviously. So that's why I'm a part of your congratulations video because we go back, what, 20 years - actually that's a fake story and I wish it were the truth."

In addition to Taylor's humor, we are admiring her gorgeous curly hair and those '80s-inspired bangs! Does this mean she's putting her tousled, straight-strands to bed and rocking the hair texture she was born with from now on? We sure hope so!

Being LGBTQ in Our Society Isn't Just Emotionally Taxing - It Actually Costs You Money

The costs of being "different" in society can be staggering. Those costs not only exact an emotional and social price, but they also take a financial toll. This unpleasant truth is what drives Dr. Vivienne Ming's work, and while her research might be scientific, it's also deeply personal. Ming came out as transgender when she was in her 30s and is now the board chair of StartOut, an organization dedicated to leveling the playing field for LGBTQ entrepreneurs.

When I caught up with Dr. Ming by phone, she acknowledged that if she had not made the decision to live her truth, she wouldn't be doing the work she's doing now. "Maybe today I'd be a fairly happy scientist at UC Berkeley still," she reflected, before quickly dismissing the idea. "Or actually, I wouldn't be. I'd be a very unhappy - but modestly successful - theoretical neuroscientist." Instead, the mother of two has devoted her career to pursuing equality for people of color, the LGBTQ community, women, and those with physical disabilities through her research. Specifically, she examines the tax on being different: how people who are viewed as "other" in society are financially impacted, in real dollars and cents, by discrimination throughout their educations and careers.

"What I decided with my transition is that I wanted to do much more. I had already laid out for myself a real purpose in life of making other people's lives better," she explained. "I was trying to think of, how do I do that, as a scientist?" Ming's own internal journey clearly fueled her desire to turn outward. "I was inspired to found companies, to found nonprofits, to go out and talk not just about my science, but about all the aspects of my life and the world as I would love to see it."

That meant confronting the injustices that people in her community face with hard facts and data, all driven by her desire to change the ingrained discrimination that impacts people's very livelihoods. One example of this is StartOut's 2016 study on LGBTQ entrepreneurship, which Ming coauthored. In it, Ming and her colleagues found that 37 percent of LGBTQ entrepreneurs chose not to come out to investors, with 12 percent saying they specifically worried being open about their identity might hurt their chances of locking down capital. They also found that while 47 percent of male LGBTQ entrepreneurs raised more than $2 million in funding, 70 percent of LGBTQ female entrepreneurs raised less than $750,000.

"Quite frankly - though it may break the heart of Silicon Valley and its idea of meritocracy to hear this - the vast majority of the people in the world that have no chance to live the life that, in some theoretical sense, is out there for them," Ming said.

Dr. Ming chats with a group of students at UCSD's convocation in September 2016, where she was a speaker.

The Peacock's Tail Analogy

Ming said one barrier for people who are viewed as somehow "different" in society is the concept of "signaling cost." She explained this through the peacock's tail analogy. "Male peacocks have this huge, beautiful, elaborate tail that is a complete and total waste," she said. "It does nothing for the peacock. It doesn't help them get food. The only thing you might think of is that it signals to the female, 'Hey baby, look at me! I'm so awesome I can waste all of this energy on my ridiculous tail.'"

So how does this play out in humanity rather than in peacock land? Ming said one good example - though highly debated - is how we view top-tier education. "The example: going to Harvard doesn't actually do you any good directly. But it signals to everyone else that you're exceptional," she said. "Essentially, because Harvard already vetted me, my Harvard degree then signals that I am an exceptional person, even if Harvard itself actually added very little to my life."

But a disturbing finding borne out by research shows that attending an Ivy League school is less of a make-or-break big deal in the long run for white people than people of color. "In the United States, if you are a white person going to UCLA vs. Stanford, it has actually no measurable difference." Not so if you're also a woman or you're transgender or you're a person of color.

The Compound Interest of Discrimination

Ming explained that viewing discrimination in terms of compound interest is key. "Every little moment that a young girl doesn't get called on for a math question in class may be small and may be trivial and may go beyond anyone else's notice," she said, "but that little indignity compounds over time."

These injustices accumulate in an exponential way. "The way the tax plays out is, you have to work longer, harder, in higher-profile jobs, [attend] fancier schools, even though you're equally qualified," Ming said. "The truth is, if you measure different points in the same person's life, [the tax] gets bigger and bigger. And, by the way, so does the wage gap for women."

Ming said it's important to look at the course of someone's education and career to see these effects really pile up. "If you look at a woman aged 55, the wage gap is about twice as high. So as you go further into your career, the taxes go higher," she explained. "The requirements imposed upon a woman or a person of color - or, God forbid, someone intersectional like a black quadriplegic person - these things don't just add up; they multiply. They interact with another and become even bigger."

Why the LGBTQ Pay Gap Gets Less Attention Than Race or Gender Pay Gaps

Dr. Ming pointed to the first StartOut meeting she attended as illustrative of why the LGBTQ tax may not get as much attention as the equal pay gap when it comes to gender or race. "It was essentially a bunch of white, gay, wealthy men drinking martinis. And that's great; I don't think there was anything wrong with an organization being that thing. But if that's the face of what it means to be gay . . . then it's probably looked at as, well what do these guys need? There's not much to be done here."

But Ming said even among those relatively privileged members of the community, there are demonstrable barriers and real, meaningful taxes to be measured. "No, they're not as large as more marginalized groups, but they are most certainly there," she said. "And to some degree, I think the LGBT community has done this to itself. A lot of the leadership really has come from that population and shied away from their own diversity issues."

But, Ming said, things are changing. "Now we're talking about gender transition, and we're talking about women, and we're talking LGBT intersectionality with other issues like race and disability and economics. This is a conflict that needed to be dealt with internally [in the LGBTQ community] before I think we could deal with it externally in our relationship with the rest of society."

How to Confront Your Own Prejudices - and Yes, You Have Them

Ming said many of our own biases are invisible to us. So, if you're in a position to hire or manage people, how can you honestly confront your own prejudice? "I'm going to be a little blunt: the starting point is not just acknowledging that they're there," Ming said. "That's not enough. Because they're too deep for that. The starting point is to really step back and concretely assess why you're making your decisions."

For example, if a manager evaluating two candidates and thinks the "straight, white guy" seems like the right hire, it's important to ask whether it's bias or real information influencing the decision. "Now, you have the very hard job of disentangling those and really, truly getting at what is driving your decisions."

Ming suggested a simple thought experiment next time you find yourself in this position: Imagine the same pitch coming from many different people of different races, genders, abilities, and sexual orientations. "How would you respond? Essentially, what is your brain filling in that's about you and not about the person that's there?"

An Infant Was Hospitalized After "Overheating" on a Sweltering Delayed United Flight

After Emily France's infant was hospitalized, this Colorado mom is speaking out about the airline she believes almost killed her baby.

When Emily and her 4-month-old, Owen, were traveling from Denver to El Paso, Texas, the family's flight was delayed. All of the passengers were kept on the tarmac for an estimated two hours as the temperature soared due to a heat wave. "They were not equipped to handle it," Emily told The Denver Post. "They couldn't evacuate us. It was chaos. I really thought my son was going to die in my arms."

According to the National Weather Service, it had already reached 90 degrees before Emily and her baby boarded the aircraft. Their seats were in the back of the plane, and Emily said that it was already hot by the time they sat down. "There was just hot air coming from the vents," Emily said.

The flight was then delayed due to bad weather, so Emily tried to cool Owen off with wet wipes. As he began to overheat, flight attendants brought garbage bags filled with ice for the infant. "We just sat and sat and sat," Emily said. "I hit my call button and said, 'I think it's getting dangerously hot back here.'"

Emily and Owen were allowed to exit the aircraft for 20 minutes but after they boarded again, they flight was delayed for a second time. Emily then took Owen to the front of the plane and stood by the opened door along with another mother and her struggling infant. As this other mom undressed her baby and placed ice on his body, Owen began to show signs of serious distress. "His whole body flashed red and his eyes rolled back in his head and he was screaming," France said. "And then he went limp in my arms. It was the worst moment of my life."

According to Emily, passengers had to beg for an ambulance while flight attendants disagreed over the best course of action. She said that Owen continued to slip in and out of consciousness throughout the estimated 30 minutes it took for the plane to taxi to the gate. "They seemed completely unprepared for a medical emergency," Emily said.

Airlines are currently allowed to keep passengers waiting on the tarmac for two hours but Emily wants this policy to take weather into account. "If the temperature in the plane gets above a certain level, passengers should be taken off immediately," she said.

Owen was treated at Children's Hospital and is now recovering at home.

A Trainer Gets Brutally Honest About Why You Aren't Seeing Results

I have some tough love for you today. It's about your workouts. You go to the gym several times a week, sometimes twice in one day, and yet you aren't as fit as you should be.

As a certified group exercise trainer and indoor cycling instructor, I've taught hundreds of classes. Based on what I see, I think a lot of you are shortchanging yourself. Taking a step back and getting honest about your approach will help you work out smarter, and maybe even harder.

1. You Aren't Paying Attention

Some instructors are better than others, but let's assume you aren't wasting your time with bad trainers. When you go to a class, are you listening to what you are being asked to do? Do you pay attention to alignment cues in yoga? Do you check your form in weight training?

Listen to what the people in spandex wearing microphones are saying. They are certified experts who take continuing education classes and spend hours creating quality workouts. They have taken on the burden of exercise selection, interval timing, choreography, and sequencing.

Sometimes the key to success is recognizing that you can't get there on your own. You wouldn't ask an accountant to do your taxes and then scribble all over the return as she was filling it out would you? Trust your instructors. They want to get you there as badly as you do.

2. You Aren't Working Hard Enough

Here's a dose of tough love: instructors know how hard you are working, and that you aren't always tapping your potential.

Example: you are in an indoor cycling class and your instructor asks you to add resistance. Everyone adds gear, except for you because you don't want it to be "too hard." When the music picks up and the entire class is straining to get up that hill, there you are, pedaling like a demon, barely breaking a sweat.

Another example: you are in a weight-training situation and even though you've been doing the same moves for months, you're still using the same weights. You wonder why you aren't getting stronger. Guess what? You aren't challenging your muscles when you always choose the same weights. Pick up something heavier. What's the worst thing that can happen? It's too heavy and you have to switch to lighter weights to finish? Do that every time if you want to see results.

Final example: you are in a HIIT class. There are people that are going to go half-speed the entire time. And there are people that are going to stop working halfway through the interval. You know how I know? Because I CAN SEE THEM! Don't be self-conscious; no one is staring at you while you work out. But the instructor is scanning the room for safety reasons and can see how hard you're working. I promise that you'll see better results when you put in the effort.

3. You Aren't Competing With Yourself

Stop comparing yourself to the other people in class. Who knows what they had for breakfast? How many workouts a week they do when you don't see them? It's not about them. It's about you and what you can achieve. Whenever I teach class, I want my students thinking, "Today I am going to do more than I did last time. I am going to add more gear. I am going to hold my sprint longer. I am going to pick up the eight-pound dumbbell instead of the five."

You go to your classes to improve yourself. You have special strengths and abilities. You may struggle at push-ups but you can plank for two minutes. You may have spaghetti arms but can crush squats all day long. Be you. Don't worry about anyone else. Stay on your own mat, mentally and physically. Your fitness will blossom.

4. You Don't Accept What You Can't Change

You have to set reasonable expectations. You can't do 1,000 burpees in 10 minutes and you will never change the biology of your body. If you're bottom heavy, you will likely always trend that way when gaining weight. If all the women in your family get saggy underarms by the time they are 40, you probably will too. However, you can tone and shape that bottom, heavy or not. You can strengthen and tighten your triceps to help that underarm sag. But remember: there is no amount of exercise that will completely transform you into someone else - and you shouldn't want it to. You were made to be you, unique and special. You can be the best you possible, and that should be your goal. Once you accept that, you can stop fighting your body and start working with it to achieve your goals.

5. You Reward Workouts With Food

We all do it. Now that I've worked out, I can go have that bin of pasta I've been craving. I can hit the drive-through for that burger and fries "because I've earned it." You haven't though. You've earned the right to refuel your body. You've worked so hard to achieve a higher level of fitness, to lose weight, to feel good about yourself. And yet you sabotage it, sometimes daily, by rewarding your workouts with food.

It's time we stepped back from food. Instead of it becoming a reward system, it should be a means to an end. The reward for the work is not a consumable. It's an intangible. It comes from within us. It's called pride. Satisfaction. Self-confidence. You can't get those things from a drive-through. If you want the burger, eat it. But don't confuse yourself about why you are having it. You haven't "earned" it. You've allowed it. And that's OK, once in a while. The next time you see that neon sign calling to you, though, think about where you are really headed, physically, and whether that detour is worth it on your path to well-being. If not, keep driving.

Best of luck on your path to greater health and wellness. Remember, you can start each day fresh. Take each class like it's your last. And be kind to yourself: you've only got the one body, so help it go the distance.

Things Moms Should Never Do When Accepting Hand-Me-Downs

I am one of those moms that absolutely loves handing my kid stuff over to other moms. Two of my close friends have children about 18 months younger than my own, which is the perfect age difference for handing down bags of gently used, still stylish clothing from my 6-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son to their 4-and-a-half-year-old and 18-month-old.

It's a mutually beneficial relationship. I'm regularly inspired to clean out my kids' closets, and I feel better about splurging on those Patagonia swim shorts and Crewcuts dresses, knowing they're going to have a second life with other kids I love. My friends save loads of money on kids' clothes and have been known to thank me generously. (One of these friends is an amazing photographer, and she offers up free photo sessions for my family; another occasionally sends me gift cards to my favorite local Mexican restaurant. Bring on the skinny margaritas!)

If you can find a long-term hand-me-down situation that works for everyone, mom life is good, but more often, hand-me-downs come sporadically and in bits and pieces, a trickier concept to navigate, especially if you're on the receiving end. Follow these six etiquette guidelines, however, and you're sure to keep getting the good stuff . . . the good kid stuff, that is.

  1. Don't take what you won't use. We've all met a mom who can't wait to unload her kids' clothing the minute they've outgrown each item, but if you don't think your own kids will wear whatever she's offering, don't feel bad saying so, giving her the opportunity to find someone else who could use it. If she just won't take no for an answer, don't feel guilty dropping off that stuff at Goodwill.
  2. Don't be grabby. Unless you're dealing with your best friend or a close relative (or a friend who's complaining to you about how she needs to get rid of a ton of kid clothes), asking for another mom's hand-me-downs is pretty much a no-no. If she's already earmarked them for someone else or wants to keep them for her own future children, you put her in an awkward position. Instead, wait for her to offer.
  3. Don't forget to express appreciation in proportion to what you took. A single item is worthy of a quick thank you text. A bag deserves a handwritten note or a bottle of wine. If you really hit the jackpot with hundreds of dollars of awesome gear for your little one, consider sending your friend a nice gift or gift card. She'll appreciate the gesture, and even after the cost of said gift, you still saved money.
  4. Don't forget to ask if they want big items back. If you are handed down something large, like a stroller, crib, or baby swing, it's considerate to ask your friend if she'd like the item back after you're done. Even if she won't need it for her own kids, she might have a relative or another friend who could use it.
  5. Don't ask for something you aren't going to end up taking. Recently a very close friend, pregnant with her third child, asked me for my son's crib when we were done with it. I said yes, then had to say no when a relative made the same request. The relative bought her own crib for her now 2-month-old son, after which my friend told me she no longer needed my crib, which is still sitting in my basement months after her initial request. Sure, things change, but if you ask for a big-ticket item, you should try to retrieve it or let it go within a reasonable time frame, understanding that there might be others in line.
  6. Don't expect an ongoing hand-me-down situation unless it has been discussed. Maybe a buddy gave you all her 3-6 month clothes, then found out her sister-in-law was expecting. Or maybe her mother reminded her/guilted her into passing down everything to a distant cousin instead. In general, just because you get one set of hand-me-downs doesn't guarantee you'll get more. Be grateful for what you do receive and understand that circumstances change and she gets to decide what to do with her future kid loot.

The Details of Selena's Death Are Still Haunting, Even 22 Years Later

Selena Quintanilla was taken from us too soon. The Tejano singer was only 23 years old when she died on March 31, 1995, after the president of her fan club and manager of her boutiques, Yolanda Saldívar, shot her in a hotel room at the Days Inn in Corpus Christi, TX. Twenty-two years later, Selena's true fans - a growing group that has recently pushed for the star's own makeup collection with MAC Cosmetics and Hollywood Walk of Fame star - still mourn her untimely death.

The tragic events started with a discovery by Selena's father, Abraham Quintanilla, Jr. When fans started calling and sending letters about not receiving merchandise they had paid for, Abraham noticed Yolanda had embezzled more than $60,000 from the fan club and boutiques. Yolanda was fired, but still held some financial paperwork for the stores. That's why Selena arranged a meeting, at the Days Inn, where at 11:48 a.m. (CST), Yolanda shot Selena on the shoulder. The "Como la Flor" singer managed to escape to the lobby, before she was rushed to the hospital and was pronounced dead.

But the terrible ordeal didn't end there. Yolanda locked herself in her pick-up truck in the parking lot of the hotel with the gun for over 10 hours, finally surrendering after the long standoff with police and the FBI. She was found guilty of Selena's murder in a trial in Houston and is serving her sentence at the Mountain View Unit in Gatesville, TX. She will be eligible for parole in March of 2025.

Since Selena's murder, her cultural relevance has only grown. Her legacy has been celebrated most famously by the 1997 movie, Selena, starring Jennifer Lopez, but also with murals, illustrations, wax figures, tribute concerts, apparel, and even some impressive lip art. She remains a cultural icon among Latinx.
