The Key to Kate Middleton's Glowing Skin Is Simpler Than You May Think

Kate Middleton is undeniably one of our ultimate beauty icons. She always looks fresh and polished with nude lipstick, has perfectly bouncy hair, and is the queen of tasteful hair accessories. Oh, and did we mention she has borderline flawless, smooth skin? Yep, she's mastered that, too.

So what's the secret to her incredible complexion? The Duchess of Cambridge's makeup artist Arabella Preston just spilled the beans, and it's actually pretty uncomplicated. "It's all about the flannel," Preston told The Cut in a recent interview. For non-Brits who aren't familiar with the term, she's not talking about a plaid button-down shirt; flannel is a British term for a terry-towel facial washcloth. These types of cloth are ideal for gently exfoliating and removing makeup and dirt, as they offer a less-harsh alternative to motorized cleansing brushes, Preston explained.

Here I've been cleansing with my hands, while the key to having Kate Middleton-like skin was right under my nose all along! Ready to have duchess-worthy skin? The soft flannel below seems like the right place to start.

The Meaning Behind Selena's Name Could Not Be More Fitting

The name Selena is one that needs no last name - Selena Gomez might be famous now, but if you say Selena to any Latinx, they'll know you're referring to the original: Selena Quintanilla.

While Selena G. was named after Selena Q., the meaning of the Tejano singer's moniker is one that might surprise you. The name derives from the Greek word Selene, which means "moon goddess" - yes, Selena's name literally means goddess. Tell us that's not incredibly fitting considering the Mexican-American singer was basically born to be a star.

While Selena's parents haven't revealed the inspiration for naming their youngest daughter, the name has only grown in popularity in the past few years. The year Selena passed away, her name was number 91 on the list of most popular baby names. It's now in the 285th spot.

1 Year After Supreme Court Win For Abortion Rights, What Has Changed?

Aimee Arrambide, center, protests outside the Supreme Court during oral arguments in March 2016

On the morning of June 27, 2016, Aimee Arrambide sat at her computer, constantly refreshing law website SCOTUSBlog and nervously tapping out messages in a "gigantic group chat" with other abortion rights advocates. She and millions of others were awaiting a crucial Supreme Court decision in the Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt case, which would decide whether or not to uphold controversial abortion restrictions in Texas. They required the state's abortion clinics to have admitting privileges at a hospital within a 30-mile radius and to ensure clinics met the same building specifications as ambulatory service centers.

The verdict would have special meaning for Arrambide, board secretary for Fund Texas Choice, an organization that helps Texan women pay for travel to their abortion appointments. It didn't take long until Arrambide found herself "in tears of joy." The Court ruled 5-3 that the restrictions, which were introduced in Texas under House Bill 2 back in 2013, placed an undue burden on women seeking their constitutional right to an abortion. HB2 required the state's abortion clinics to have admitting privileges at a hospital within a 30-mile radius and to ensure clinics met the same building specifications as ambulatory service centers.

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote that it was "beyond rational belief" that HB2 could protect women's health.

The Supreme Court decided that these requirements, which would have shuttered the vast majority of the state's clinics, were medically unnecessary. In the decision, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote that it was "beyond rational belief" that HB2 could protect women's health.

Although she was following the news in Washington, D.C. from Austin, Texas, "it was so reassuring to go through it with everyone else," says Arrambide. "It was one of those moments in my life that I'll never forget, because it's something I've been working for my whole professional career." She celebrated with other abortion rights advocates at a beer garden later that night.

This Tuesday marks the one-year anniversary of the Whole Woman's Health decision, which, given the current political climate, seems in some ways like just yesterday, and in others, like a lifetime ago. The administration of now-President Donald Trump includes several vocal antiabortion supporters, including Vice President Mike Pence, while individual states continue to push through legislation that attempts to limit abortion access. As a result, there's a new wave of well-founded fear for the future of reproductive rights in the U.S. Yet, despite renewed concerns, last year's decision actually resulted in some positive impacts for women in the United States.

Amy Hagstrom Miller, president and CEO of Whole Woman's Health and lead plaintiff, addresses press on the Supreme Court steps in March of 2016

"This Decision Said That Women Matter"

"Not only were the laws struck down in Texas, we've started to see clinics reopen in Texas," says Elizabeth Nash, a policy analyst at the Guttmacher Institute, a reproductive rights think tank. More than half of Texas's 41 abortion clinics closed in the wake of HB2, leaving just 19 clinics for a population of nearly 13 million women. Since the Whole Woman's Health decision, two clinics have reopened. "That is really a huge step," says Nash. "Reopening a clinic is difficult in general. To see these clinics reopen really sets the tone that the decision impact is starting to be felt."

Nash says the Supreme Court decision has also acted as a deterrent: states are no longer so quick to adopt restrictions similar to those that were struck down in Texas. "We are not seeing those being enacted in new states, or even being introduced," she says. Where they are introduced, such as in Missouri, appeals are quickly filed.

"What this decision did was provide a framework for evaluating abortion restrictions and said that evidence matters, that women matter," says Nash. "That wasn't clear before."

And while the 41 abortion restrictions enacted in the 2017 legislative session may sound like a lot, it's actually a decline from the usual number, which tends to be higher after a major election, especially when a GOP majority wins. "You would typically see 50 restrictions enacted," says Nash. "It was surprising to us to see only 41 so far this year."

Arrambide, whose father was an abortion provider in Texas, says the very fact that abortion rights won in the Supreme Court is important and is"definitely something we can build upon." After working her entire professional life to make sure women have access to safe and legal abortion, the Whole Woman's Health decision meant Arrambide and her colleagues don't have to constantly be on the defense. There's also been an increase in legislation protecting abortion rights: so far this year, 133 bills have been introduced in 33 states.

"We're going to fight for abortion rights rather than against abortion restrictions," says Arrambide.

"The Opposition is Very Nimble"

Despite a year of some progress, it's still important to remember that a lot work needs to be done. Some states are "still extremely hostile to abortion rights," says Nash, and appear to have doubled down in the wake of Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt. In March, Wyoming adopted its first new abortion restrictions in nearly 30 years, while 20-week abortion bans have been enacted in Kentucky, Iowa, and Ohio this year. The intent of such legislation, says Nash, is to restrict abortion rights.

"We're back every year fighting."

In Missouri, opposition to abortion borders on the absurd, mainly in the form on State Representative Mike Moon. Earlier this month, Moon killed and dismembered a chicken on camera, comparing it to an abortion procedure. He previously said the Missouri State Museum should include an exhibit on abortion, placed next to the section of the museum on slavery. In Oklahoma this year, the state legislature declared that abortion equals murder.

"The problem is, our opposition is very nimble and they're able to regroup and introduce new restrictions," says Arrambide.

Among those new restrictions include attempts to introduce macabre fetal cremation and burial requirements for woman who have had abortions. David Brown, a senior staff attorney for the Center for Reproductive Rights who worked on the Supreme Court case, points to laws in Texas, Louisiana, and Indiana that would require women to have funerals for their embryos. The laws are currently ensnared in lawsuits, and opponents say the requirement is patronizing, inconvenient, costly, and potentially traumatizing. "We're looking at laws like that quite closely," Brown promises.

Back in Texas, the fight is not over. Governor Greg Abbott called a special legislative session, due to start on July 20, which will focus on a number of issues, including abortion. One of the bills recently signed by Abbott, Senate Bill 8, bans dilation and evacuation - or D&E - which advocates say is the most common and safest form of second trimester abortion. "The numbers [of procedures] are going to increase" and the wait times will get worse because of SB8, says Arrambide.

A new realization, says Arrambide, is that Texas's most recent legislative session has brought different groups together, including abortion rights advocates, immigrant justice groups, and LGBTQ organizations. "It's becoming more and more apparent that we can't fight this in our silo issues," she says. "That's not necessarily a direct result of Whole Woman's Health, but it is the federal administration combined with what we've been dealing with in Texas for decades."

And while Tuesday might not mimic the "beautiful day" of June 27, 2016, Arrambide is still proud of the progress made so far.

"People tend to write Texas off, but to me it was like, look at how hard Texans fight and persevere," she says. "We're back every year fighting."

Investigation Reveals Disturbing Discovery of Feces in Starbucks Drinks

Dear Starbucks fans of the world,

I deeply regret what I'm about to tell you. I don't want to deliver this news, but as a fellow Starbucks enthusiast, I feel it's my coffee-lover's duty to do so. An investigation has revealed the discovery of feces in iced drinks from Starbucks in the UK. As in, fecal bacteria. In multiple samples of Starbucks iced beverages.

BBC's investigative television series Watchdog conducted an investigation of the ice from three of the UK's biggest coffee chains, which include Starbucks, Costa Coffee, and Caffe Nero. The results found levels of fecal bacteria in the iced drinks from all three places. WTF.

BBC's Tony Lewis said, "These should not be present at any level - never mind the significant numbers found." We'd have to agree, Tony.

At Starbucks specifically, three out of 10 samples tested by BBC contained fecal bacteria. Starbucks is reportedly looking into the claim and will hopefully update its guidelines on the protocol for cleaning its ice machines - the likely culprit of the bacteria-filled ice. Anyone who has worked at a coffee shop or restaurant knows that ice machines can easily become filled with bacteria if not handled properly. And if the employees don't wash their hands thoroughly, well . . . yeah.

Just when we were getting excited for iced-coffee season and ordering all the Starbucks Iced Macchiatos, this news has us feeling a little wary. Let's hope the Starbucks ice machines in the US are in better shape than the ones in the UK.

Sincerely,

Someone who is going to start making her own iced coffee

The Beautiful Way JAY-Z Used His New Album to Help His Mom Come Out

This week, JAY-Z dropped his latest studio album 4:44, and there's so much to discuss. While the rapper brings up plenty of different people in the new tracks, it's the more personal moments that really shine. One song is dedicated to his infidelity. He talks about Beyoncé's miscarriage and apologizes for cheating on her. He even mentions his kids! Another song turns into something you'd never expect: a coming out for his mom, Gloria Carter.

Called "Smile," the song is a powerful duet between mother and son. JAY-Z raps "Mama had four kids, but she's a lesbian / Had to pretend so long that she's a thespian / Had to hide in the closet, so she medicate / Society shame and the pain was too much to take."

Even more moving, though, is the poem Gloria Carter reads at the end: "Living in the shadow / Can you imagine what kind of life it is to live? In the shadows people see you as happy and free / Because that's what you want them to see / The world is changing and they say it's time to be free / But you live with the fear of just being me . . . Living in the shadow feels like the safe place to be / No harm for them, no harm for me / But life is short, and it's time to be free / Love who you love, because life isn't guaranteed."

The fact that JAY-Z is supporting his mother so vocally and visibly is a beautiful decision in itself. It amplifies the message she sends in her own poem: it's time to be free. It's also important to note that, even in 2017, rap remains a pretty homophobic art form. For JAY-Z to include this song makes two grand statements. It directly contradicts a pretty glaring part of rap music culture and it mirrors the pride Gloria Carter is attempting to stir up in herself. That's power.

18 People Who Are in Line For the Presidency If Trump Is Impeached

If you're suddenly curious as to who becomes president in case President Donald Trump resigns, dies, or is impeached, take a look at the 18 people in line for succession. Called the Presidential Succession Act, the law has a long history of changes, with the last one taking place in 2006.

The first iteration of the Presidential Succession Act in 1792 stated the Senate president pro tempore would be next in line after the vice president. On July 18, 1947, President Harry Truman signed the Presidential Succession Act of 1947. This act changed the line of succession in two ways; first it reinstated the Senate president pro tempore and speaker of the House to the succession plan. Secondly, it also placed the speaker of the House right after the vice president instead of the Senate president pro tempore. The last change to the act came in 2006, when the USA Patriot Improvement and Reauthorization Act of 2005 added the secretary of Homeland Security to the list.

In Trump's administration, here's the full line of succession.
  1. Vice President Mike Pence
  2. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan
  3. Senate President Pro Tempore Orrin Hatch
  4. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson
  5. Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin
  6. Secretary of Defense James Mattis
  7. Attorney General Jeff Sessions
  8. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke
  9. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue
  10. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross
  11. Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta
  12. Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price
  13. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson
  14. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao
  15. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry
  16. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos
  17. Secretary of Veterans Affairs David Shulkin
  18. Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly

The only caveat here is that Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao isn't eligible since she was born in Taipei, Taiwan, and is therefore not a US-born citizen. While it's still uncertain whether or not we'll need to refer to this list in the future, at least we know who we can expect.

Daddy Yankee Has Changed a Lot, but Not Really Since He First Bust Onto the Scene

Daddy Yankee first burst onto the scene when he appeared on DJ Playero's 1992 mixtape, Playero 34, but it wasn't until his 2004 mainstream breakthrough album, Barrio Fino, that he turned into a household name. Not only is the sexy 40-year-old musician known as the "King of Reggaeton," but he transformed himself into an international name brand by the time his 2007 album, El Cartel: The Big Boss, was released.

Since then, he's gone on to win a Grammy, signed a clothing line deal with Reebok, received a star in the Paseo de la Fama in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and he's even made a guest appearance on CBS's soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful. Daddy Yankee has come a long way, to say the least. Keep reading and see just how far.

Gigi Hadid Wore an Impossibly Tricky Outfit and Still Looked Flawless, Go Figure

Gigi Hadid looked like a millennial pink dream stepping out in NYC in a fringe-trimmed, dusty-rose metallic jacket and coordinating skintight flares. Even Your Sleeping Hours Aren't Safe From Social Media, Thanks to This Perverse New Invention

For most rational human beings, the span of several hours of the night when we finally put down our phones and disconnect is a treasured, holy time. But for those of you who relish letting go and drifting off into a tech-less sleep, enjoy it while you can, as the night is about to get lit (with notifications).

The Aumi Mini, an absolutely horrifying, Twilight Zone-esque Kickstarter project, was surfaced by The Verge today, and the internet - as well as our sleeping habits - may never be the same. What looks like a simple nightlight actually serves as a strobing, blinking customized-color notifications system, and what it seeks to do is ensure that you never miss a single email, push alert, or social-media shenanigan ever again. With more than 150 percent of its target already backed, it's very unlikely that the Aumi Mini won't be made, which means that sooner rather than later, these devices will begin entering our bedrooms and informing us of the FOMO we wouldn't know we had without them.

Suffice it to say, Twitter had a field day with the mere concept of never being disconnected from the internet. And since you may have missed it given the fact that you don't yet have a nightlight alerting you to the goings-on of your phone while you're not looking at it, we've done a quick jaunt through the best of the best reactions to the news as it broke today.

Can You Spot the Kid Drowning in This Public Pool Before the Lifeguard Does?

A day at the pool isn't all fun and games - and no one knows that better than the lifeguard.

Drowning can happen in the blink of an eye and even when people are within arm's reach of the victim. As much as we think we might notice someone struggling in the water, drowning is often a silent killer.

Thankfully, in this real-life video taken at a public wave pool, a boy is spotted drowning within seconds by a resourceful lifeguard - likely well before anyone watching this footage, even knowing what to search for, could spot him.

The lifeguard sounds her whistle, swims out to the boy who lost hold of his floating ring, and carries him to safety.

One important factor to note is that this video includes sound, but you never hear the boy's cries for help. That's because when someone is drowning, contrary to what many assume, they can't call out - there isn't time to inhale or exhale. Often, they aren't able to wave their arms, which was a lucky ability for the child at this particular pool.

So can you find him?

19 Safe Sunscreens For Kids (Including Some You Can Find at Your Drugstore)

Slather on the lotion! If you thought the breast vs. bottle debate was polarizing, wait until you talk to fellow playground moms about sunscreen. Though lotions and sticks protect little ones' skin from cancer-causing UVA and UVB rays, doctors advise new mamas to use physical barriers - SPF clothing, umbrellas, and shades - rather than lotions on babies younger than 6 months old.

Once tots reach the 6-month mark, though, we need to keep them protected from the sun without harming them in other ways. The Environmental Working Group's recommendations for the best sunscreens for tots - products that do not contain potential hormone disruptors - is considered the definitive list of safe options. According to EWG Senior Scientist David Andrews, it's inactive ingredients like retinyl palmitate (vitamin A) and oxybenzone that parents need to look out for. "By and large, the ones that do well in our database are the ones that are mineral-based products with a higher percent of zinc oxide, as well as some of the products with titanium dioxide," he said.

While parents have been getting the message about switching from chemical sunscreens to mineral versions, one of the group's biggest concerns is how parents are using them. "[Consumers] are looking to buy higher and higher SPF values," Andrews said. "When people use higher SPF values, we're concerned that it leads to a change in behavior and an increased time in the sun and that you apply less of it. Those products may not be as effective in blocking both UVA and UVB radiation. So we steer consumers toward SPF 30 to SPF 50 products and lower and we really think those are the sweet spot of the products that are available in the marketplace."

He went on to explain, "The active ingredients in SPF 30 and SPF 100 products may be quite similar. So we're going to be doing more over the course of the next year, investigating the inactive ingredients like the antioxidants and anti-inflammatories that may be reducing redness in the skin, but may not be reducing how much hits your skin. The way the SPF test is done is in changes in skin redness."

So what's a parent to do when trying to choose a safe sunscreen? First, check the EWG's site and app for a list of the safest and least safe options for your family. If you don't have that at your fingertips, Andrews recommends:

  1. Steering away from SPF products over 50. SPF 30-50 products depending on the situation are OK.
  2. Seek out products that use three percent avobenzone if they are chemical sunscreens or the ones that use zinc oxide as the active ingredient in natural versions. "[They] do the best job of filtering out UVA radiation across the spectrum of UVA radiation. Seek out products that use a higher percentage of zinc oxide - typically you'll find 15 to 20 percent, or three percent avobenzone."
  3. Look at inactive ingredients on the label. If possible, avoid products that use retinyl palmitate (vitamin A) and avoid products using oxybenzone.
  4. Avoid spray products - they're convenient but not the best choice. Why skip the convenience of spray lotions? "You don't get a uniform coating on the skin," Andrews says. Plus, "Given the concern about the ingredients in these products, we really don't want to coat the inside of our lungs with sunscreen."

A Look Back at Princess Diana's Stunning Jewels

Princess Diana wasn't famous for her love of bling, but from the moment she said "yes" to Prince Charles' proposal, the door was opened to a calendar of jewel-strewn royal events. Over the years, the princess blended tradition with her own inimitable flair, creating some of the most iconic looks of the modern British royal family. We've rounded up some of the most incredible pieces from Diana's jewelry box - most of which she left in her will to William and Harry, specifying that they were to be worn by the princes' future wives. Which, of course, means we could be seeing all of these items worn at some point in the future - whether by the Duchess of Cambridge, or by Prince Harry's future bride . . .

A Frida Kahlo Festival Is Trying to Set an Impressive World Record

The Dallas Museum of Art is throwing the ultimate Frida Fest in hopes of setting a Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people dressed as Frida Kahlo in one place. The museum is celebrating what would have been Frida's 110th birthday on July 6 with the giant event. The record-setting gathering will also celebrate the end of the museum's "Mexico 1900-1950: Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, José Clemente Orozco, and the Avant-Garde" exhibition.

"Grab you flower crowns, connect your eyebrows, throw on a shawl . . . to be part of a record-setting event," the museum's event page states. In order to participate in the record attempt, people have to provide their own costume and fit this criteria set by Guinness: Each person has to have a drawn unibrow, a minimum of three artificial flowers worn in the hair, a red or pink shawl, and a flower-printed dress that extends to below the knees on all sides.

Latina-owned brand Reina Rebelde will be at the festival to "help you embrace the unibrow with complimentary Frida Kahlo-inspired looks," according to the Dallas Star Telegram. We can't wait to see the photos!

The Cutest Pictures of Peter Hermann and Mariska Hargitay's Family of 5

Peter Hermann and Mariska Hargitay have an envy-inducing love story, and their family is just as sweet. The couple, who first met on the set of Law and Order, are happy parents to three beautiful children. Aside from bringing them on the red carpet from time to time, Mariska constantly gives us little glimpses of their home life on social media. The duo first welcomed their son, August Miklos Friedrich, in June 2006 when Mariska was 42, and their daughter and son, Amaya Josephine and Andrew Nicolas, by adoption almost five years later.

Over the years, the actress has been very open about her journey with adoption and her desire to have a big family. Even though the pair faced a few bumps along the way - one birth mother changed her mind a few days after an adoption - Mariska admits that becoming Amaya and Andrew's mom was definitely "worth the fight." See the family of five's sweetest moments together.

The True Story Behind Orange Is the New Black

Image Source: Getty / Eugene Gologursky

If you're a fan of Orange Is the New Black, then you know by now that it's based on the real experiences of Piper Kerman. Kerman, known as Piper Chapman (and played by Taylor Schilling) on the show, published a bestselling memoir of the same name. While Kerman says the show, headed by Weeds creator Jenji Kohan, is not a docudrama whatsoever, her real-life experience does come through in the series. Obviously, the show has diverted a lot since we've been through five seasons now.

The Crime

After college, the real Piper Kerman fell for a woman caught up in an international drug ring. In the book, she calls her Nora, and if you watch the show, you know her as Alex (played by Laura Prepon). The real Piper smuggled $10,000 from Chicago to Brussels, Belgium, during her time with Nora, and 10 years later, the law caught up with her. In a 2010 interview with NPR, Kerman said that while she had long harbored resentment toward Nora, during her time in prison, she accepted full responsibility for the drug-ring days. She said, "It was a reckless and selfish time in my life."

The Author Fiancé

Just like in the show, Kerman had a fiancé named Larry (Larry Smith, who is a writer), who was by her side during her incarceration. In the show, Larry, played by Jason Biggs, writes a Modern Love article titled "One Sentence, Two Prisoners" in season one. The real Larry's Modern Love piece was published on March 25, 2010, with the title "A Life to Live, This Side of the Bars." In the real column, Larry recalls how he and Kerman reacted when her past came back to haunt her: "To say she was freaked out and wondering if I would stick around for the messes sure to come is an understatement. To say that it never once crossed my mind to bail on her is simply a statement of fact." In her own memoir, Kerman said this of the column: "Even here, without him, I couldn't imagine any sweeter Christmas present." Kerman wed Smith in 2006, and they're still married. Obviously, on the show, Larry has been long gone, having left Piper for her best friend.

The Prison Rules

In the Orange Is the New Black book, Kerman wrote about the official and unofficial rules of prison life, many of which are played out in the series:

"I had learned a lot since arriving in prison five months ago: how to clean house using maxipads, how to wire a light fixture, how to discern whether a duo were best friends or girlfriends, when to curse someone in Spanish, knowing the difference between "feelin' it" (good) and "feelin' some kinda way" (bad), the fastest way to calculate someone's good time, how to spot a commissary ho a mile away, and how to tell which guards were players and which guards were noth-in' nice. I even mastered a recipe from the prison's culinary canon: cheesecake."

In her NPR interview, Kerman also discussed how race played a part in how people organized in prison. But she also explained that as time goes on, the "tribal" organization becomes looser: "While initially people might sort of gravitate toward the people who are the same color of them, I think that matters less and less the longer you're there."

Kerman's husband's real New York Times column also touched on the strict rules that play out in the show's many visitation scenes. He wrote: "No one else in my life knew the reality of our circumstances, like why buying your lady a Diet Coke from the vending machine in the visiting room (because our women weren't allowed to touch money) was among the greatest acts of love you were capable of performing."

The Cast of Characters

One of the most distinctive aspects of the Netflix show is its diverse ensemble cast. While many are purely fictional, others are adapted from people Kerman actually came across in prison. While show writers created the backstory for Sophia, played by transgender actress Laverne Cox, there was a trans woman living next door to Kerman in prison, whom she calls Vanessa in the book. Also, Kerman dedicated her book to the Red character, whom she calls "Pop" in the memoir. In the book, she recalls Pop saying:

"Listen, honey, I know you just got here, so I know that you don't understand what's what. I'm gonna tell you this once. There's something here called 'inciting a riot,' and that kind of shit you're talking about . . . you can get in big trouble for that . . . so take a tip from me, and watch what you say."

Finally, the true nature of the relationships are also captured. "A lot of folks sort of ask salacious questions about the romantic relationships between women," Kerman said in 2010, "but I think the dominant paradigm of women's relationships in prison is the mother-daughter relationship."

The Ex

Kerman gave a TED talk in 2013 about the prison system, peppering it with details about her own incarceration. In it, Kerman shared bits about people who inspired characters on the show - like the ex-lover who got her into the drug trade. At the seven-minute mark of the video below, Kerman shares how confronting her ex helped her confront her past.

The SHU

Season two begins with Piper serving time in the SHU for attacking Pennsatucky, but in real life, Kerman never had solitary confinement. She did, however, testify before the Senate in 2014 on behalf of eliminating the use of solitary as punishment.

Furlough

A big season two plot point for Piper is how she gets furlough when she finds out her grandmother is dying. In the show, she misses her death but still gets to head home for a couple of days. In real life, Kerman also lost her grandmother but didn't get furlough or to say goodbye. She told EW in a 2010 interview: "It's devastating when you confront how selfish actions you've taken are preventing you from being there for the people who need you the most. That's a terrible, terrible thing."

Kanye West Leaves Tidal Following JAY-Z's New Song About Him

Kanye West is exiting the Tidal family. According to TMZ, the Yeezus rapper believes the music streaming service, which JAY-Z acquired and relaunched in 2015, owes him "more than $3 million" in fees. Kanye's lawyers claim he was not paid a bonus for bringing in over 1 million new subscribers to Tidal when he exclusively released his 2015 album, The Life of Pablo, on the service. Kanye is also allegedly seeking reimbursement for music videos he says Tidal hasn't yet paid him for.

TMZ reports that Kanye's lawyers sent a letter to Tidal two weeks ago declaring the contract was terminated after a failed negotiation between both parties, but Tidal reportedly sent back a letter to the rapper stating that he is still under an exclusive contract with the streaming service and will be sued if he takes his music elsewhere. According to the report, Tidal is arguing that Kanye failed to produce the contracted music videos, so therefor he is not eligible to a payout.

This news comes after JAY-Z recently released a new song on his 4:44 album that alludes to his strained friendship with Kanye. On the song, JAY-Z addresses Kanye's infamous rant about him and Beyoncé while on tour last year. "I know people backstab you, I feel bad too / But this 'f*ck everybody' attitude ain't natural/" JAY-Z raps. "But you ain't the same, this ain't KumbaYe/ But you got hurt because you did cool by 'Ye/ You gave him 20 million without blinkin'/ He gave you 20 minutes on stage, f*ck was he thinkin'?/ 'F*ck wrong with everybody?' is what you sayin'/ But if everybody's crazy, you're the one that's insane."

Hold the Phone, Dunkin' Is Dropping an Insane S'mores Doughnut For Summer

Anything s'mores is A-OK in my book, which is why I'm so excited about Dunkin' Donuts's latest Summer doughnuts. The coffee brand is rolling out a s'mores doughnut starting July 3 for a limited time only, and I can't wait to get my hands on it. The doughnut combines a toasted-marshmallow-flavored filling with a decadent s'mores topping made with Hershey's chocolate. It really doesn't get much better than a rich s'more that requires no campfire!

Also arriving July 3 is the Chocolate Drizzled Strawberry Croissant Donut, which will have flaky, buttery layers of Croissant Donut, strawberry filling, and a chocolate icing drizzle. Sounds like the doughnut version of a chocolate-covered strawberry, no? I'm nearly as excited for this one as I am for the s'mores one. However, because both will only be offered for a limited time during the Summer season, you shouldn't wait to grab one of each to try.

12 Photos of the iPhone Through the Years That Will Make You So Nostalgic

Ten years ago, on Jan. 9, Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone to the world. A few months later on June 29, 2007, the iPhone was released to the public. No one knew just how much the iPhone would change our lives.

The iPhone was first introduced at the Macworld 2007 expo by Steve Jobs and described as "a widescreen iPod with touch controls, a revolutionary mobile phone and a breakthrough internet communications device." When it first came out, people thought the iPhone wouldn't last, but here we are 10 years later, arguing about AirPods and still waiting in line to get the newest phone.

Most people can't imagine living without their iPhone - something Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, definitely agrees with. "iPhone is an essential part of our customers' lives, and today more than ever it is redefining the way we communicate, entertain, work, and live," said Cook in an Apple press release. "iPhone set the standard for mobile computing in its first decade and we are just getting started. The best is yet to come."

I can still remember upgrading my flip phone to an iPhone 3G and feeling totally weird to be carrying around what I thought was a glorified iPod that could make phone calls. Take a trip down nostalgia road and see all the different generations of the iPhone.

7 Surprising Smoothie Ingredients For Weight-Loss Success

If your diet is lacking in enough nutrients, adding a smoothie to your diet can help immensely. Toss any of these seven ingredients into your next smoothie along with your favorite fruits to get their nutritional benefits without sacrificing taste.

  1. Broccoli: The fiber-rich vegetable helps keep you full without changing the taste of even your favorite smoothie combinations. You can use raw broccoli or steam it quickly first for a smoother consistency. This 330-calorie peanut butter, broccoli, and strawberry smoothie will keep you full throughout the morning.
  2. Chia seeds: If you're looking to start the day right, add a tablespoon of chia seeds to every smoothie. The high-fiber seeds are also a great source of anti-inflammatory omega-3s, so you'll feel full and ready to take on your morning. This berry chia seed smoothie recipe masks the taste and texture of chia seeds if you're not a fan.
  3. Green tea: Want a little energy boost in your smoothie? Add strong, cold green tea to any smoothie instead of water for a subtle caffeinated pick-me-up. We like the refreshing taste of this green tea, cinnamon, and honey smoothie.
    • Flaxseed: For a smoothie that's got heft, add some flaxseeds to the mix. High in omega-3s and fiber, flax helps promote bone health, lowers cholesterol, and keeps your digestive system healthy. The healthy fats in flaxseeds also help relieve inflammation. Add a tablespoon of ground flaxseed to your next smoothie; you can make this overnight flaxseed, apple, and cinnamon smoothie ahead of time so you can grab and go in the morning.
    • Leafy greens: If you hate the taste of kale or spinach, adding a cup or two to your morning smoothie is the way to reap their many health benefits. Once blended with the rest of your smoothie, the taste is imperceptible, but you're still getting a hefty portion of crucial nutrients like calcium, vitamin A, manganese, and vitamin K. Choose your favorite leafy green for your next smoothie with our comparison of the nutrients in kale and spinach.
    • Coconut water: Not a banana fan? Adding coconut water to your morning smoothie helps you get the electrolytes you need to feel energized and bloat-free. We love this debloating papaya, pineapple, and coconut water smoothie for that very reason.
    • Tofu: For a dairy-free protein kick, blend some silken tofu into your diet. It'll give your smoothie a creamy consistency without any Greek yogurt. This vegan vanilla smoothie, made with silken tofu and soy milk, has 17 grams of protein and is a tasty way to trick your taste buds into thinking you're drinking a milkshake.

Everything You Need to Know About Queen Letizia of Spain's Incredible Wedding Gown

Queen Letizia of Spain walked down the aisle of the Cathedral Santa María la Real de la Almudena in Madrid to marry King Felipe VI 13 years ago, and we still can't get her dress out of our heads. The long-sleeved gown was so intricate; we're probably still trying to process every detail.

The designer behind the queen's impressive dress was couturier Manuel Pertegaz, who embroidered the structured open collar, cuffs, and hem of Letizia's ivory dress with real gold and a floral pattern. But the real gold wasn't even the best part - file that under things we never thought we would write - it was all about the 14-foot train (which, for the record, also featured gold) and the lace veil laid over her updo, delicate diamond tiara, and dress. The stylish royal, who constantly shocks us with her fashion choices, paired the unbelievable and certainly princess-worthy dress with delicate diamond drop earrings and pointy heels. Keep reading to see more photos of the memorable royal wedding.

A Vintage, All-American Fourth of July Party

When you think of Fourth of July, you probably think fireworks, red, white, and blue, and, of course, good old-fashioned American pride. Crafty lady and blogger Lia Griffith and her pal Lisa Frank used the latter to inspire a vintage Independence Day event that was as all-American as apple pie (which she served up next to blueberry cheesecake, red velvet cupcakes, caramel corn, and berry pies). "I am loving the look of vintage anything right now," Lia says. "When looking around at what's out there for Fourth of July parties, I didn't see much with that Americana look, and I knew that it was something I would love to create." Mission accomplished with flags, a classic color scheme, old-fashioned pinwheels and wind socks, and lots of printables that make it easy for you to re-create this festive party. This Beautiful Baby Would've Been Stillborn - but 1 Incredible App Saved Her Life

Toward the end of Emily Eekhoff's pregnancy, she was keeping track of her baby's movements as she eagerly anticipated her second child's arrival. However, when this Iowa mom was 33 weeks pregnant, she noticed something that no pregnant mom wants to realize: her unborn baby wasn't as active.

Yet instead of just having to trust her gut or second-guess what she was feeling - or wasn't - Emily had been utilizing an app that she now credits for saving her baby's life. Count the Kicks app helps expecting parents monitor their baby's daily movements and keeps a history of their patterns.

When Emily first questioned whether her baby's activity was starting to decrease, she was able to quickly check her phone - and confirm her suspicions. Since decreasing fetal activity can be a sign that an unborn baby is in immediate distress, Emily and her husband rushed to the hospital after checking the baby's activity history.

"We are really thankful that we did," Emily told WHOTV.

Upon arrival, doctors discovered that baby Ruby's umbilical cord was tightly wrapped around her neck three times. Emily needed an emergency C-section to save her baby from this potentially fatal condition.

"I haven't let my mind go there," Emily said. "They could have been burying our baby instead."

Dr. Neil Mandsager explained to USA Today that Ruby most likely would have died within a day if her mom hadn't recognized the change in her baby's activity and had waited before seeking immediate help.

Ruby spent 20 days in the NICU and is now thriving because her mom was able to quickly realize that she was in distress and needed immediate medical attention. "I think God was looking out for us that day, and we had tools to know when to come in and get help when we needed it," Emily told USA Today.

Five women created this innovative app after they all experienced stillbirths, and Emily believes it saved her own child from becoming a statistic. "When you and I don't feel well, we move less. We want to lie on the couch or in bed and not move. It's the same thing with babies. When they are not feeling well, they move less," Emily Price, the executive director of the organization, said in a press conference. "Sometimes kick counting is the only indication - and the earliest indication - that something is wrong in there."

The free app helps women in their third trimester track how long it takes them to feel 10 kicks and also allows moms to set reminders for when it's time to start counting. Count the Kicks first started in Iowa and believes its awareness campaign has helped to lower the state's stillborn rate by 26 percent over the last five years.

"If we can reduce the entire country's stillbirth rate by 26 percent, as we've done here in Iowa, we will save more than 6,000 babies every single year," Price said. "That's 6,000 families who will have been saved from the heartache of losing their child."

Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance Look So Good Together It's Almost a Crime

Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance are both Hollywood icons in their own right, but we're equally as obsessed with their romance. The two first met in 1980 and have been making us swoon ever since. They tied the knot in 1997 and welcomed their twins, son Slater and daughter Bronwyn, nine years later. Aside from writing a book together, Friends: A Love Story, they have both starred in hit Ryan Murphy shows - Angela was in the last four seasons of American Horror Story while Courtney gained critical acclaim for his performance in The People v. O.J. Simpson. Honestly, if the famous writer were to create a show about their relationship, it would probably be called American Love Story, because these two know how to keep the flame burning.

Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron Will Awkwardly Meet Again For Bastille Day

Donald Trump will meet with French President Emmanuel Macron again during an upcoming trip to France on Bastille Day, July 14. While the president will be celebrating the important national holiday, his trip will symbolically serve as a centennial commemoration in honor of the United States's entry into World War I, which officially took place in April 1917.

In a statement released on June 28, the White House said Trump had accepted Macron's invitation. "President Trump looks forward to reaffirming America's strong ties of friendship with France," the statement read. "The two leaders will further build on the strong counter-terrorism cooperation and economic partnership between the two countries, and they will discuss many other issues of mutual concern."

The White House's comment implies that the trip will help strengthen relations between the two nations and their leaders. And it's worth noting that when Trump first met the newly elected Macron in Brussels on May 24, things did not exactly go well. Macron went into the meeting already well aware of Trump's notoriously suffocating handshake, so he made sure to assertively grip the president's hand until he gave up on their apparent duel.

In an interview with Journal du Dimanche following the highly publicized handshake, Macron said his actions were certainly intentional. "My handshake with [Trump] was not innocent, not the alpha and the omega of a policy, but a moment of truth. We must show that we will not make small concessions, even symbolic ones."

More recently, an older video of Macron discussing climate change went viral as the internet's apparent response to Trump's decision to pull out of the Paris Agreement. In the video, Macron welcomes American scientists to his country. "Please come to France, you are welcome. It's your nation; we like innovation. We want innovative people," he said. Since releasing the video, Macron has also set up a not-very-subtly shady website: http://ift.tt/2qZOAPa.

Despite the fact that Trump said he wouldn't be visiting France following the terrorist attack in Nice on Bastille Day in 2016, it's a statement that he's apparently rescinded. At the time, he said, "I wouldn't go to France because France is no longer France . . . . They won't like me for saying that, but you see what happened in Nice."

Given the rising tensions between the two leaders, this trip shouldn't be awkward at all! Bon voyage, Trump!

This Brand Creates Temporary Tattoos That Last 2 Entire Weeks

A startup company has found a solution to one of the more daring parts of getting inked: it usually lasts forever. Since many of us go through changes in taste, style, and even profession throughout our life, the premise of getting a tattoo on our body may be daunting. But Kickstarter Easy.ink has found a solution for those who want to express themselves without commitment.

Startup company Easy.ink has invented a patch that will leave you with a waterproof tattoo for up to two weeks. The patch is designed with a medical-grade, hypo-allergenic adhesive, as well as your design made with organic ink from a Jagua fruit. You simply stick the patch on your skin and go about your day. A few hours later, you can remove the patch to reveal your new tattoo - that only you will know is temporary.

Unfortunately, Easy.ink tattoos aren't available for purchase yet. The company is currently raising money through this Kickstarter, hoping to meet its goal of $15,000. With this money, the founders intend to make the product more cheaply and in various designs, so they can get ready to sell to the public.

Hopefully the product will be ready soon, because its premise is extra exciting, especially to beauty junkies who always want to switch up their looks. Read on to see some of the prototypes of this innovative product.
