Even Steven Yeun Agrees That Glenn "Never Got His Fair Due" on The Walking Dead

Although fans of The Walking Dead had been theorizing for months that Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) would be the one bashed to smithereens by Negan in the season seven premiere in October 2016, it didn't stop the show's writers (or AMC, for that matter) from getting an intense amount of backlash for the eventual death, which many saw as overly gory and gratuitous. Now, eight months on and with a starring role in Netflix's Okja under his belt, Yeun has had some time to really think about what Glenn's death meant for him, the fans, and the future of The Walking Dead. While sitting down with Vulture's E. Alex Jung, Yeun explained the mixed feelings he still has about the way his character was killed.

"I don't feel like it was too much," he said of Glenn's death. "I'll be honest with you and put a full disclaimer here: I might not be objective, but I truly feel like people didn't know what to do with Glenn. They liked him, they had no problems with him, and people enjoyed him. But they didn't acknowledge the connection people had with the character until he was gone. I look at what happened and I think, That wasn't any more gory than what we've done before, per se. No one got their face ripped in half! People got their guts smashed out and their heads caved in. But this one felt gratuitous because one, it kept going, and two, I think they took away someone that I didn't realize I had made such a connection with until they took him away."

Part of what led fans to criticize the show was also The Walking Dead's frustrating decision to drag out Glenn's fate, waiting to reveal who dies by Negan's hand (or bat, rather) in the season seven premiere instead of in the season six finale, as expected. The rest of the season crawled along at a painfully slow pace, and it's no secret that the drama's ratings aren't what they used to be. Still, Yeun noted that he cherished his "incredible" time on TWD, even if he had some issues with how his character was written. "[It] was tough sometimes because I never felt like he got his fair due. I never felt like he got it from an outward perception," he explained. "I don't say this as a knock on anything. He always had to be part of something else to legitimize himself. He was rarely alone. And when he was alone, it took several years to convince people to be on his own."

Yeun elaborated on the notion that Glenn and Yeun himself, for that matter, were seen as secondary to other actors on the show no matter how beloved the character grew to be over five seasons, citing Entertainment Weekly's choice not to give him a cover until he was axed from the show (while costars Andrew Lincoln, Danai Gurira, and Norman Reedus have all been featured in solo cover stories in the past).

"I didn't think of it as racism, where it's like, Oh, this is racist. I caught it in a way of Oh, this is how we're viewed all the time - as part of some glob, some amorphous, non-individualistic collective. We're like a Borg, and so because of that, they're like, 'Well, we don't need to give the shine to that character. There's all these other characters who are so cool!' I'd always hear people go, 'I love Glenn, he's my favorite character.' But the merchandise would go one way. That really might be the market, so I'm not going to sit here and be like, 'Why didn't they make Glenn merchandise?' But there was a disparity. They didn't know what Glenn was, and only in his death did they realize, 'Oh, that's what he was. That's the connection I had, and that's why it hurts me so much to see him die.'"

Glenn's spectacularly bloody end might have been controversial, but had the character lived, it might have been a fate literally worse than death. "I think the cruelest thing is that if Glenn had continued on, knowing how things usually shake out, I could totally foresee a situation where he just slowly, quietly disappears into the background and is kind of remembered but not really," Yeun added. "But in this way, it was like holding up a battered skull to the world to be like, 'Don't forget, this Asian person existed in this medium and now he's f*cking dead.' Like, he is f*cking dead. That's super cool! I'm cool with that."

These 18 Pretty Bralettes Look So Fancy, but They're All Under $25

We have a big-time bralette obsession right now. Not only are they wire-free and extremely comfortable, they are also supercute. Bralettes add texture and flirtiness to a look by poking out from beneath a shirt or dress. The lightweight fabric makes them a great undergarment pick during the Summer heat, too. Basically, they're the best undergarment invention ever. We rounded up our favorite options at affordable prices so you can test drive a few. Take a peek at these pretty little things.

Sick of Chicken? It's Time to Add Turkey to Your Diet

Turkey can be added to a veggie salad, piled high between two slices of sprouted whole-grain bread, or included in your morning omelet - and that's a good thing. The lean meat is a good source of energizing B vitamins, as well as minerals like iron, zinc, and potassium. Perhaps best of all is its protein content, which hovers around 29 to 30 grams per 3.5-ounce serving. (That's even more than chicken!) Protein is an ace at helping you feel full, satiated, and satisfied, and getting enough can help you reach and maintain a healthy weight.

For all the protein, there's little fat in this package, especially if you choose white meat. Surprisingly, even dark meat isn't the fat bomb you might expect. Whether or not you choose to eat the skin is what really jacks up the fat content.

Here's a look at how your options compare:

TYPE OF MEAT CALORIES FAT (G) CARBS (G) PROTEIN (G)
White meat, no skin 135 <1 0 30
White meat, with skin 153 3 0 29
Dark meat, no skin 162 4 0 29
Dark meat, with skin 193 7 0 29

The Easy Eating Formula For Getting Rid of Body Fat

If you feel soft in the middle, you can either thank your mother for inheriting her blessed genetic predisposition for belly flab or your sweet kiddos who were created there. Whatever the reason, if you'd much rather have a sleeker midsection, as a mom of two, I can totally relate.

Although it's impossible to spot-reduce fat from specific areas, we've enlisted the help of Christmas Abbott, CrossFit competitor and author of The Badass Body Diet ($28), to help us ditch our pinch-more-than-an-inch tummies. As a formerly "skinny fat" woman who transformed her body through CrossFit and a dialed-in diet, Christmas understands how real women feel and also what they need to do to get the body they crave. "Food is your foundation, and fitness is the accessory," says Christmas. She believes that every meal and snack needs to embrace the macronutrient trifecta of proteins, carbs, and healthy fats to help reduce overall body fat, which will aid in reducing stubborn belly fat.

Christmas explains that all food can be categorized into a protein, a carbohydrate, or a fat. "You can't go wrong by dividing your plate into thirds and filling each section with a primo protein, primo carbohydrate, and primo fat." There are only two foods Christmas says to avoid - processed foods and alcohol - since these contribute to unwanted fat. If you want to know specifics about how many of each to eat, The Badass Body Diet outlines a diet plan based on your personal body type and goals.

What about exercise? Short, high-intensity training sessions are proven to help reduce belly fat faster than steady-state cardio. Below are some great examples of this type of workout.

And once the belly fat begins to dissolve, you'll want to reveal a carved, toned core with this 10-minute ab workout. Working out three times a week is great if you're starting out, then you can add additional days as your body becomes stronger. As a CrossFit competitor, Olympic lifter, and head trainer at CrossFit HQ, Christmas also makes a point that your workouts should be fun so you stick with them longer.

20 Times Dwayne Johnson's Rock-Hard Muscles Almost Broke Open His Shirt

It's not hard to tell why Dwayne Johnson was named the Sexiest Man Alive in 2016. When the devoted family man and charismatic actor isn't making us melt on screen, he's heating things up in the gym, on the red carpet, on a plane, in a parking lot, etc. While we certainly have a soft spot for The Rock's hard-core abs, he really gets us hot and bothered when he's wearing a formfitting shirt. Whether he's trying to make us weak in the knees on purpose or he simply made a mistake and bought an XXS, we certainly aren't complaining when he slips into tight tees or tank tops to show off his bulging biceps.

Nicky and James became engaged in Italy in August 2014 and tied the knot in a stunning ceremony at Kensington Palace in London in July 2015.

It's No Theory, Kaley Cuoco's Bikini Body Is Banging

Kaley Cuoco is best known for her role as Penny on The Big Bang Theory, but she is just as hot offscreen as she is on. 10 Jean Companies That Manufacture in the Good Ol' USA

Much like apple pie, it doesn't get much more American than a great pair of blue jeans. After all, this is the land where denim was born. And more than 140 years after Levi Strauss patented his signature riveted workwear, American denim is still going strong.

Stronger than ever, you might even say! Because while some brands pay homage to the classics with traditional cuts (and we're not just talking traditional womenswear) and reconstructed vintage denim, others are reinventing the wheel with fringe, interesting hems, and innovative washes. With some of today's hottest jeans designed, crafted, and sewn out of Los Angeles, New York City, and even Missouri, these essential brands will put you firmly on team USA.

Instagram Stories Might Become Even More Popular With This New Feature

The war for your content between Instagram and Snapchat stories just got a little more heated. Instagram announced a new way to reply to your friend's stories: with a photo or video, a feature that Snapchat currently doesn't have.

The new reply feature, available today on both iOS and Android with the latest version of the app, is easy enough to use. Now, when you look at a friend's story, you'll see the familiar text box at the bottom, but with a camera icon to the left of it. Tap it to send a photo, video, or Boomerang reply to their Direct inbox.

In your reply, you can add stickers, face filters, and use the rewind feature. And if you're someone who forgets what they post to their story, your friend's reply will include a sticker of it. All replies in your Direct inbox will be highlighted in blue, so you'll know the difference between a regular message and someone replying to your story.

Just like regular direct messages, any reply sent to your friend will disappear after you see it. Screenshot their reply? Your friend will get a message that a screenshot was taken. Ahead, see how the new reply feature works.

4 Ways to Stop Your 3-Year-Old From Begging

It's remarkable how much I knew about parenting before I had kids.

Placing my stack of Lean Cuisines on the grocery store conveyor belt I'd watch as moms and dads held up the line, desperately negotiating with their toddler over a candy bar or a pack of gum.

"Jeez - grow a pair," I'd think as I watched them bargain their way right into their child's sticky little palm. This 20,000-foot view offered me a pathetic picture of what little power some parents had over their children.

Then I became the parent of a 3-year-old and reality exposed itself to me like a mustached man in a pick up truck. We're tired. We're poor. We're huddled masses yearning to breathe free. We would sell our souls for five minutes of peace, however, nobody tells us that cutting corners to get this five minutes of peace comes with a price tag. A few wrong turns and quick fixes and suddenly you find yourself at the mercy of something that hits you mid-thigh.

You say no, she says pleeeeeeeeeease. You dig in, she throws herself on the floor. The post office closes in 15 minutes so you break, giving into whatever she's been pleading for. You promise to stick to your guns next time but each day the begging becomes more persistent and abrasive and you suddenly understand why some animals eat their young.

It's a vicious cycle - beg, negotiate, placate, repeat with more intensity. I was at my wits end and though my daughter had the stamina of a salmon returning home to spawn, I had access to the internet. Here's the best of what I've learned, as well as a couple of my own tricks.

1. Think before you speak.

Many times my instinct was to mindlessly say no, then upon further consideration I realized it would have been okay to walk the long way out of the mall and throw a coin in the fountain.

What I said: "Now, I'm not changing my mind because you're begging," I warned as we walked toward the fountain, "But because I changed my mind."

What she heard: "Good begging! Do it again next time and you can write your own check!"

When your child asks for something, take a breath and give it some thought before you spout off a knee jerk "no".

2. No means no.

Once it leaves your lips, there's no going back. Say it with me now: THERE. IS. NO. GOING. BACK. Prepare yourself for the worst of the worst in the beginning (I recommend having headphones and two fingers of Scotch on hand 24/7). Eventually she'll realize you're not going to budge and decide not to waste her time. Don't be alarmed if your toddler moves onto alternative methods of negotiation, like holding her breath, or facial prison tattoos. I promise it will get better, albeit a little at a time.

3. Bring it down to their level.

It's easy to tune out annoyances, especially when you're engrossed in cooking or other household chores. And by cooking and other household chores I mean scrolling sangria recipes on Pinterest or cyber stalking your ex-boyfriend's new wife. We're busy. Sometimes all it takes to re-route your kid is spending five seconds to show him that you hear his request and offer a simple explanation for your "no." So put down your phone, kneel onto his level, look deep into his soul and say, "We can't go to the water park today because I have to renew my driver's license." It helps to do this in your lowest and most intimidating (read: demonic) voice - bonus points if you can make your eyes glow red.

4. Set realistic consequences.

Obviously, we are only human, and yet sometimes you need to nip that begging business in the bud. Lay down the law - tell her that if she begs one more time there will be a consequence. And ain't nobody gonna believe you'll actually leave the zoo, including your 3-year-old. While you might think it's the ultimate threat and want to get her attention, she knows you parked in east Jesus and aren't going to abandon that 30-minute sunscreen sesh.

A few days ago we were at the pool and at 10 a.m. I heard a mom threaten her son with leaving the pool if he didn't stop splashing people. She was still robotically threatening that same thing four hours later. It's imperative the consequence is something you will follow through on. "If you don't stop begging, we are going to sit on the bench for 10 minutes while your friends go visit the tigers," or, "One more 'please' and I'm going to sh*t in your Crocks." Get creative. Parenting is fun.

The bottom line: While it seems like your 3-year-old is being a huge turd, she is simply trying to figure out where your boundaries are. She'll bend you little by little and if you don't push back you'll eventually break. So keep your cool and stay strong. We don't negotiate with terrorists.

Why Coconut Oil Is the Single Best Natural Oil For Hair

Coconut oil has been a natural beauty darling for a while now. It's used to moisturize skin, remove makeup, whiten teeth, and more. According to haircare experts and science, it may also be the best way to keep your hair soft, shiny, and healthy.

Natural hair care has come a long way since the early days of synthetic-free products. Those goopy concoctions that left hair either straw-like or waxy are a distant, not-so-fond memory. Today, you can have your gorgeous hair product and eat it, too - or at least, that's the case with coconut oil. Coconut is definitely not the only natural oil used in hair treatments, but it is the best at moisturizing and giving hair that bouncy shine you love. The natural oil has also been found to diminish hair fall, promote hair growth, and add body to limp locks.

Why Is It Especially Good For Hair?

What makes coconut oil work so well on hair? A 2003 study compared the effects of coconut, sunflower, and mineral oils on preventing hair damage. Coconut oil was the only one of the three to reduce protein loss "remarkably" on both damaged and undamaged hair. Coconut oil is a triglyceride of lauric acid (a fatty acid) with a low molecular weight. Because of its unique composition, coconut oil has the ability to penetrate the hair follicle and reach the hair shaft, protecting and repairing from the inside out. Other natural oils, including sunflower and mineral oils, do not have this ability and simply coat strands.

Many organic beauty creators are savvy to the healthy hair benefits of coconut oil. Josh Rosebrook, founder of Josh Rosebrook organic skin and hair care, says, "Coconut oil is ideal for hair due to the molecular structure of the oil having the ability to penetrate the hair shaft and soften and add shine to hair."

What Products Can You Find It In?

Coconut oil is added to leave-in products, hair conditioners, and treatment products like hair masks. A once-weekly application of a coconut-oil-based hair treatment, like St. Tropica Organic Coconut Oil Hair Mask, not only keeps hair moisturized and manageable but also fights frizz, prevents split ends, and treats dry scalp issues. Those experiencing excessive dryness or hair damage may use a coconut oil treatment twice weekly and will benefit from a daily use product that contains the ingredient, like Josh Rosebrook Nourish Conditioner.

As with skin, hair and scalp types respond to coconut oil differently. If you are sensitive to coconut oil or tend to break out on your scalp, you may want to avoid the oil. You can also create a personalized coconut oil hair mask by adding other natural ingredients, like Tara Mackey of Organic Life Blog. "I love to use coconut oil as a hair mask at night. I warm it up on the stove first and add in a few drops of lavender and rose essential oil to give it a subtle scent. When it is warm but not too hot, I then transfer it to a bowl and dip my brush in the oil. I gently brush the warm coconut oil through my hair from roots to ends until it's entirely saturated. This helps to stimulate hair follicles and aids in healthy growth, length, and less breakage. I wash it out in the morning and my hair has a natural shine and luster from the natural fatty acids and vitamins contained in the oil. Love this little beauty ritual and recommend everyone do it at least once a week!"

What to Know Before You Buy

If you have yet to get in on the goodness of coconut oil for hair, time to get started. You can either purchase a ready-made product or grab a jar at your local grocery. Before you pick up a jar of CO, it's important to note that not all coconut oil is created equally. If you've ever shopped for coconut oil before, you've likely noticed there are two types - virgin coconut oil (VCO) and refined, deodorized, and bleached coconut oil (RDB). VCO is obtained by pressing the meat of the coconut and is usually processed in small batches. RBD is made from dried coconut and, as the name implies, is chemically treated. Check product labels before you buy as it's easy to get the two types confused. Another way to tell if you have VCO or RBD is the smell. VCO smells and tastes like coconuts, while RBD has little to no coconut scent or flavor.

Whether you mask, use a daily use product, or whip up your own DIY coconut oil hair treatment, this natural oil will keep your locks healthy and repair damage. Added bonus? The yummy, tropical scent. And with celeb and science backing, this natural oil has a bright future in hair care.

The Short List: 6 Brands Petite Women Need to Know About

Finding the perfect fit is difficult enough as it is, but being smaller than average shouldn't mean you have to settle for a smaller-than-average selection. And though most brands don't cater to five-foot-nothin's like they ought to, we've found the ones that do. We may be short, but we're not shortsighted. Gigi Hadid's New Styling Trick Makes Outfit Planning a Whole Lot Easier

This Summer, Gigi Hadid has been spending plenty of time in New York, showing off a slew of new outfits. We've noticed that those outfits include some essentials, like her Stalvey top-handle bag (she owns the design in multiple colorways and textures), ultrabright sunglasses, and statement pants. But Gigi plays a trick with these items. In order to come up with the foundation of her look, she matches at least two of her pieces every time.

Perhaps we can credit the move to her new stylist, Mimi Cuttrell, or maybe this game of mixing and matching was all Gigi's idea. Either way, we're on board with trying it out for ourselves: just coordinate your sunglasses with your shades, bag, or that flash of color on your boots, finish with neutral separates, and - voilà! - you've got Gigi's signature down to a science. Read on to see how it's done.

Here's What Happened After I Ran a 5K Every Morning For a Week

Summer in New York City can be downright rough. As if staring at your electric bill isn't depressing enough on its own (thank you, air conditioner), working out in the muggy afternoons is much less than ideal. Only a few weeks into the season, I noticed a pretty crappy byproduct of the season: my fitness routine was slipping. Warm mornings had made it tough to leave the comfort of my cool bedroom for a sunrise run. As someone who swears by early a.m. workouts, I saw my productivity slipping by the wayside as my lazy mornings became more frequent. Despite managing to get to midday Spin classes or even the occasional hot yoga situation, I still felt blob-ish.

I knew I needed to get my mojo back. So, I decided to commit to running every morning for a week. The rules: Hit a 5K first thing (after, of course, the whole wash my face, brush my teeth, put clothing on schtick). The pace didn't matter. All that mattered was that I would get up, get out, log the miles, and well, the rest of the day was mine to conquer.

A quick note on me and my running capabilities: I've run five marathons (I've also lost 70 pounds in the process). The last one was almost a year ago. Still, these daily 5Ks didn't come easy to me. There were days I hated it, and there were days I loved it. Days five and six, the temperatures were perfection - 60 degrees, sunny, and low humidity - making me fall in love with this city all over again with each step. Throughout the week, here are the four biggest lessons I learned running a 5K every morning for a week:

1. Preparation is everything.

Getting out the door at an early hour is a whole lot easier if you set yourself up for success. Before bed each night, I'd set aside a pair of shorts or tights, a sports bra, and a tank. Knowing exactly what I was going to put on gave me one less excuse to procrastinate before walking down the four flights of stairs from my apartment to the street. Plus, have you seen what happens when you try to put together a matching outfit pre-6 a.m.? No wonder why most New Yorkers only wear black.

2. The earlier, the better.

I despise humidity like I despised sophomore year statistics class in college. While sleep is amazing, there's no denying that beating the heat is 100-percent worth setting that alarm for an hour earlier. Maybe I'm just super sensitive, but I found that leaving after 6:30 meant it was harder for me to breathe. By setting a 5:45 a.m. alarm, I was able to get up, dressed, and my act together before hitting my stride by 6:10 a.m. This, for me, was ideal.

3. Partnering up can save your stride.

On day one of my 5Ks, I joined my boyfriend for a 10K. (He's an overachiever and after a glutenous date night, I felt like the jump-start could do me good.) I'll be the first to admit that I was in the front seat on the struggle bus. Last month, the man spontaneously decided to run 20 miles because "he was feeling great." So just envision this scene with me: it's mile two of our run, he's cruising along like a gazelle, and I stare in his general direction using puppy eyes asking him if we can take a pitstop so I can assault a water fountain.

Still, without him being there to push me past my comfort zone, I doubt I would have finished the miles that day. I became competitive, not just with him, but with myself. You've run marathons, I thought to myself. You can run a 10K. Although I didn't get to that desirable happy place on my run where you blink and suddenly it's done, I did check the box. After I felt appreciative to have had him to get me through. I also felt appreciative when he made coffee upon returning to the apartment.

4. When something becomes habit, it's easier to stick with.

When I started running back in 2007, I committed to logging the same distance every day, rain or shine. I didn't love those give-or-take 14-minute pavement dates, but after two Summer months of running daily, it had become routine. I started to look forward to taking that time for myself. Regardless of the snail-worthy pace, I felt like I had finally done something for myself. I felt accomplished.

This week of 5K running brought me back to that time. I found that by day eight (yes, I know that there are seven days in a week), I was still waking up to run 3.1 miles before going on with my day. Yes, I kept it going even AFTER I was "done." It took me one week to make this 5K morning situation habit. One week a 5Ks to find some inner peace and jump-start my fitness back to where I'm happiest. Maybe for you, it's not running. But perhaps you too can be surprised at what you're capable of when you set your mind to a goal - and execute.

Missing 13 Reasons Why? Tony's Song Will Hold You Over Until the Show Is Back

Prince Harry Works His Signature Charm on a Group of Kids - and a Rhino

Prince Harry officially kicked off his two-day visit to Leeds on Thursday. The royal attended the Leeds Leads: Encouraging Happy Young Minds charity fair, where he took part in a panel and addressed the mental well-being of the city's young people. Harry praised the community for their commitment to encouraging people to seek help for mental health problems, saying, "I have been so impressed by the commitment of this City and the Leeds Community Foundation in focusing on mental health. You have been leading the way in bringing funding and expertise together in support of local community solutions." Harry then spent his afternoon at the Sky Try Rugby League Festival, which aims to inspire students across Leeds to take up the sport. Not only did Harry turn on the charm while coaching a group of kids and chatting it up with the team's mascot, but he also fully embraced his new role as patron of the Rugby Football League.

Harry has been opening up more and more in recent months about his own mental health battles. In addition to launching the mental health campaign Heads Together with Prince William and Kate Middleton, the royal recently talked about how he sought professional help to cope with the tragic death of his mother, Princess Diana. "Not to get too personal, if you lose your mum at the age of 12 then you've got to deal with it and the idea that . . . 15, 17 years later I still hadn't dealt with it, Afghan was the moment," he said in an interview with Forces TV. "Once I plucked my head out of the sand, post-Afghan . . . it had a huge . . . life-changing moment for me. It was like, right, you are . . . Prince Harry, you can do this, as long are you're not a complete tit, then you're gonna be able to get that support, because you've got the credibility of 10 years' service and therefore, you can really make a difference."

This Dad Couldn't Afford Disney, but What He Did Instead Will Melt Your Heart

Dole Whip cups, bacon macaroni hot dogs, Mickey Mouse pretzels, and corn dog nuggets are just a few of the wallet-draining, mouthwatering foods sold once you're inside Disney World, but throw in the price of park passes, airfare, and, of course, World of Avatar souvenirs as well, and you've got yourself an overall heavy price tag for a day of going on rides. There's no denying that traveling with the family to Disney can do damage to your bank account, but in an effort to avoid all costs when a trip wasn't financially feasible for his family, one dad came up with the ultimate hack to bring Disney World right to his living room.

YouTuber KentuckyFriedIdiot wrote that his daughter wanted to go to Disney World, "but since it's too expensive we did the next best thing." He plopped his daughter into a plastic container, put on a few POV rollercoaster videos, and took his little girl for a ride! Disney park tickets may be expensive, but this family's sweet moment - and the smile on his daughter's face - is priceless.

If You Have Nut Allergies, You Need to Know About This Clif Bar Recall

The company behind the popular Clif protein bars is voluntarily recalling three products over nut allergy concerns. On July 5, the Food and Drug Administration announced that the company would be recalling the Clif Builder's Protein Bar in Chocolate Mint, the Clif Kid Zbar in Chocolate Mint, and the Clif Kid Zbar in Chocolate Chip.

According to the press statement, the three bars do not disclose the possible presence of almonds, walnuts, cashews, and several other nuts. After a reportedly small number of consumers complained about having an allergic reaction, Clif Bar decided to proactively recall the affected products. That being said, the bars are absolutely safe for people who do not have any nut allergies.

If you have a nut allergy and encounter one of the potentially problematic bars, Clif Bar is instructing consumers to immediately return the product for a full refund or exchange. For more information on the recall, read the FDA's full press statement.

Lose Weight, Build Muscle: This HIIT Circuit Burns Calories Well After the Workout Is Over

There are a lot of excuses people use to skip workouts - let's review:

"I can't make it to the gym."
"I'm really busy this week."
"I don't have a treadmill/dumbbells/insert any and all fancy gym equipment here."
"I'm always traveling."

If you've ever used one of the above reasons to talk yourself out of exercising, this no-excuses workout is for you. Austin Lopez, CSCS and owner of AUSome Fit, was kind enough to create this bodyweight HIIT workout when I listed all of the reasons I couldn't exercise during an upcoming trip. Nice guy, right?

This workout requires zero pieces of equipment and very little space and takes up an entire two percent of your day. TWO PERCENT. After a test on our end - heart rate monitor and all - we found that it only takes 30 minutes but still manages to burn over 300 calories. But it doesn't stop there! The beauty of HIIT is the afterburn effect, Austin told POPSUGAR. The intense form of exercise helps increase the body's resting metabolism rate, meaning the workout keeps working for you hours later - even when you're splayed out on the couch. "You might only burn 300 calories during the 30 minutes you spent doing the workout, but that can translate into an extra 300-600 calories as the day goes on," Austin said.

The Workout

  1. Start with a dynamic warmup.
  2. Move through circuit one, then rest for half the amount of time it took you to complete the circuit before running through it again. Complete circuit one a total of four times.
  3. Move through circuit two, then rest for the half the amount of time it took you to complete the circuit before running through it again. Complete circuit two a total of three times.
  4. End with a cooldown.

The 32 Types of Swag Ryan Phillippe Has

He may actually be hotter than ever. Ryan recently returned to the small screen in the ABC drama Secrets & Lies, and gave us lots of proof that he's just as sexy as he was two decades ago. He's still got the bad boy thing going, but now with a sweet "cool dad" vibe - and don't even get us started on how amazing he looks sans shirt. Your teenage crush Ryan Phillippe is still very, very attractive, and we've rounded up 32 recent photos that show all the different types of swag that he has. Keep reading to see them all now.

Thinking of Trying Weight Watchers? Here's Exactly How (and Why) It Works

It's the Oprah diet (she lost 42 pounds and counting!) and the diet your aunt goes to her weekly meetings for. You've definitely heard of Weight Watchers, but do you know how it works? It's actually one of the most effective diets out there.

In the world of weight loss, Weight Watchers has been ranked 2017's No. 4 best diet overall, the No. 1 best weight-loss diet, and the No. 1 best fast weight-loss diet by U.S. News, and these aren't new accolades; the diet is consistently top ranked and backed up by research. A 2013 study found that dieters are more likely to stick with Weight Watchers (and lose weight) than they were with a treatment from a specialized weight-loss clinic.

So it's been proven effective, people are losing weight and changing their lives, and experts agree that it's one of the best diets you can be on - but how does it work? Here's a breakdown of all the facets that make Weight Watchers so successful.

The Points

The points are the hallmark of this diet. With Weight Watchers, there's less of a focus on calorie counting, but a focus on points instead - this makes sense, because not all calories are created equal. You could eat 200 calories of lean chicken or 200 calories of gummy bears, but that doesn't mean they're the same nutritionally.

So instead of counting calories - which is ultimately too top-line if that's your only means of quantification - every food gets assigned a point value called SmartPoints, and they're based on calories, saturated fat, sugar, and protein.

It works like a "budget." And that makes sense - a lot of people are great at (or at least understand the concept of) budgeting their money but can't apply that principle to their food. You'll put an item down at the store that's too much money, but you probably wouldn't think twice about a food that was super high in sugar and saturated fat.

This is how SmartPoints work, in budgeting terms (and according to the site): in terms of value, calories "set the baseline" for how much the food is "worth," while protein makes the food cheaper (fewer points, meaning it's healthier and you can have more), and saturated fat and sugar make that food more expensive.

Weight Watchers Chief Scientific Officer Gary Foster, PhD, added, "The plan nudges members toward a healthier pattern of eating that includes more lean protein, fruits, and vegetables, and less sugar and saturated fat. All fresh fruits and most vegetables are zero SmartPoints."

Subscribers of the diet get personalized points. "The daily SmartPoints target is based on age, gender, height, and weight to help them determine how much they need to eat each day to lose weight at a safe rate - about one to two pounds per week," said Foster. There are also allowances for bigger portions, going out to eat, and weekend "splurges," which make for a much more realistic and sustainable meal plan.

No Food Group Elimination

Another reason it works is because you're not cutting out food groups - Foster noted this as one of the key reasons Weight Watchers is so effective. Who could forget Oprah's love for bread and her overzealous, unbridled joy when she told commercial audiences nationwide that she can eat bread on Weight Watchers? "Members can personalize the program to meet their needs, and everything is on the menu - no food is off limits," said Foster.

We interviewed a woman named Becca who had major success on Weight Watchers and lost over 100 pounds, and the no-elimination style of diet is what drew her in. "I joined Weight Watchers because the program seemed so easy and it still lets you eat the food you love in moderation."

U.S. News noted that one of the key factors in what makes a diet successful and effective is its sustainability, which is why Weight Watchers saw such high success and Whole30 did not. No eliminated food groups, no problem.

The Education

Diets can't be cookie cutter - every person's goals, lifestyle, body chemistry, and makeup are unique and different.

Weight Watchers adapts to this with an education focus - you learn about the best (and worst) choices for your diet and your body, which helps you understand food, nutrition, and weight loss better and on your own, independently from a diet or what someone is telling you to eat.

You'll also learn healthier recipes, portion sizes, and how to eat when you're at a restaurant. This helps you switch from an automated diet (where you end up feeling like a robot following commands) to a healthy lifestyle.

As U.S. News put it, "The company offers thousands of recipes, each with a SmartPoints value, to show how it fits into your eating plan. If you're preparing a dish that's not listed in the database, you can calculate the points value ingredient by ingredient, using your mobile app or through the company's website. Vegetarians, gluten-free eaters and people with other dietary preferences can also easily find items and recipes tagged for them."

The Meetings

Community is one of the biggest components of Weight Watchers and also one of the best ways to lose weight. You'll notice that any successful fitness or nutrition plan has a hefty community following it as well, encouraging each other, posting motivating photos on Instagram, or arranging for in-person meetups.

That's how Weight Watchers meetings started. Founder Jean Nidetch started inviting her friends over to her home in New York to catch up and discuss weight-loss strategy; that tradition lives on today. This style of support system can help with weight loss in a number of ways, including cortisol management (the stress hormone that can contribute to belly fat). A study in the journal Psychiatry showed evidence of social support counterbalancing stress.

"It is easier to live a healthier life and start this journey when you have a shared experience," said Foster. "Others to help provide different perspectives, motivate you, hold you accountable, etc."

Weight Watchers members also have access to personal coaching, which can provide even more personalized and specific guidance. This coaching and leadership is an integral part of the program. "I don't know if I would've made it this far without her support and the support of our Weight Watchers leader," said Jamie, a woman who lost over 90 pounds with the program.

Keep in mind that all of these services do cost money, with the starter fee at $20 and the most expensive plan (unlimited meetings and personal coaching) at $70 per month.

The Fitness

Aside from diet, you earn "FitPoints" and can work with a Fitbit or tracking device to track your exercise and movement. This concept was introduced in 2015 and now ties into the overall points system.

Sorry in Advance, Because You'll Be Eating These Arroz Con Leche Paletas Until You Get Sick

We're kicking ourselves because we just can't believe we didn't think about turning our favorite dessert into a popsicle before seeing this video. Seriously, file this under "things so obvious, we should have been doing them for years." But, moving on, we're jumping straight into making these arroz con leche paletas right now - enough to fill our entire freezer.

María from La Cooquette is giving us the exact steps to turn rice pudding into an icy treat that'll keep you refreshed all season long. Her recipe uses all the ingredients your abuela used in her arroz con leche (evaporated milk, condensed milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and, of course, rice), and simply freezes the dessert for three hours before decorating the popsicles with condensed milk and shredded coconut. Watch the how-to above.

There's a Chance the Downton Abbey Movie Might Actually End Up Being a Prequel

Waiting for the Downton Abbey movie to finally get made is like waiting for Lady Edith to catch a break - there's a good chance it's never going to happen. The British period drama ended its sixth season in the US in 2016, and ever since, the production team behind the show has been hinting that a feature film will eventually make its way to screens. Although we've fallen for the same song and dance before, it seems like the Downton Abbey movie has officially been given the green light, with the project heading into production next year.

"We are working on getting the script right and then we've got to figure out how to get the (cast) together," Michael Edelstein, president at NBCUniversal International Studios, recently told the Associated Press. "Because as you know, people go on and do other things. But we're hopeful to make a movie sometime next year." Apparently Julian Fellowes, who wrote the TV series, has also been tasked with writing the script for the movie (meaning more sassy lines from Lady Violet, which is something we can all get behind). The only thing giving us pause? The cast had no idea it was happening.

"Well, tell my agent, because we're still waiting to know," Laura Carmichael, who played Lady Edith, joked with the AP after being asked about it. "We're hoping that will happen soon." Sophie McShera (aka Daisy Mason) was also out of the loop before speaking to the AP, noting that the press had "got confirmation before us." Luckily she's just as down for the project as Carmichael. "We have no idea if that's happening. But we would all love to be part of the film if it was to happen, for sure," she said. Hugh Bonneville, who plays Lord Grantham, also noted earlier this year that he considered a movie version of the show "highly unlikely." "There is no script that I have read, or any deal in place, for a Downton movie," he said. Then again, Michelle Dockery told fans the opposite, promising them that a movie was "very, very likely," and that "there is potential for a film . . . it may not be over yet."

So, who should we believe? Since things are still up in the air we'll just have to wait and see, but an NBCUniversal spokesman did confirm to Variety that the studio hopes to put the movie into production in 2018. On top of all that, Fellowes recently suggested at a China Exchange event in London that a Downton Abbey prequel with younger versions of the show's main stars could also be in the works, since "rounding up the actors who have now gone off to the four corners of the earth, in Hollywood, on Broadway, doing plays, doing series, and so on" is a difficult hurdle.

According to Fellowes, the film would take place in the 1880s, which is 30 years before the events in the TV series. That means younger actors would be tapped to play the characters instead of the original cast. "I think it would be possible to do a prequel that was recast and do a love story," Fellowes said. "So you went right back and had the young cast arriving in the show as footmen and Mrs. Patmore being a kitchen maid." At this point, we don't care which version of the movie we get, so long as we get one, period.

400 Pounds of Whole Foods "Chicken Salad" Recalled For Containing Tuna, Not Chicken

Whole Foods shoppers, beware. One of the grocery chain's suppliers, Willow Tree Poultry Farm, has issued an official recall for its chicken salad products due to "misbranding" and "an undeclared allergen." Approximately 440 pounds of the brand's Buffalo Style Chicken Salad have been recalled because they actually contain tuna, not chicken, according to the US Department of Agriculture. Yikes!

The affected products, which were packaged in 12.5-ounce plastic containers and produced on June 27, 2017, had the establishment number "P-8827" inside the USDA mark of inspection. These mislabeled salads were shipped to Whole Foods stores located in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, so if you live in any of those states and are a loyal consumer of this chicken salad, the USDA suggests tossing it in the garbage, especially if you have allergies.

On the plus side, the store is slightly redeeming itself for this awkward mixup by offering $5 off its prepared food offerings when you spend $25 or more from July 5 through July 11 (but you must have the Whole Foods Market phone app to redeem the offer!). We're unsure if this is directly related to the chicken salad recall, but considering how darn expensive that hot bar can get, we'll gladly take advantage of this deal!
