Dad's Important Question For TSA After They Discarded His Wife's Breast Milk

One dad who recently went through airport security with his wife and 9-month-old child has an important question for TSA after they discarded his wife's breast milk: "Wondering why mother's milk was tossed by TSA and why they considered it 'dangerous' when we had passed though security several times with milk and had no problem before."

Although many breastfeeding mothers, whether they were traveling with their baby or not, have experienced this kind of treatment from TSA before, hearing a dad's perspective on the matter is unique. The dad, who goes by "Tamachan5" on Reddit, wrote a post in the breastfeeding subreddit explaining his family's experience and looking for answers.

"So, TSA decided that my daughter's lunch was dangerous and had to be discarded," he wrote. "Mind you, until that particular incident, we were pleasantly surprised by the good service and common sense by the agents in all our interactions with them during our trip."

The little family had made several stops on their trip already, passing through security just fine in Dallas, San Antonio, and New York City, but the dad says "things turned sour" on the last leg of the journey.

We were going through security when the female TSA agent checking the milk called the supervisor. I had noticed, that unlike previous times where they checked the milk for a bit and then gave it to us after a couple of minutes, this time it was taking longer. After a few more minutes, the supervisor decided "an alarm had gone off" and notified us that the milk we had for the trip was not allowed to go through, and he would have to discard it.

We asked if the baby could drink the milk in the offending bottle instead of being thrown away, but this was not acceptable. I got a pat down by an agent (very professional, mind you) and we were let trough after a while. I WANTED to ask a question to the officer but knew better than to argue or seem "argumentative" (we all know where that road goes, eh) so I kept my mouth shut.

So here is the question: why, if the same expressed milk from my wife was used, in the same bottle, in the same container and with the same ice packs, on different dates, and we did not have a problem before, did they throw [away] this particular milk?

Although clearly perturbed, the curious dad ends his post on a positive note: "At least we still had plenty of time left before our flight. They have a great nursing room in [Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport] (San Antonio Airport, your nursing room smells like poop, by the way - fix it) so baby did not go hungry."

The Completely Addictive Method of Cooking Broccoli and Cauliflower

It won't be a challenge to eat your veggies if you try this easy technique for roasting cauliflower and broccoli. For months, a few women in our office have been praising roasted cruciferous veggies. I'm already a huge fan of baked kale chips, roasted brussels sprouts, and oven-crisped cabbage, so I'm not sure why it took me so long to try out roasted cauliflower and broccoli. Now that I have, I'm never going back to the steamed stuff. The oven morphed the little veggie trees into crisp nuggets that could almost pass for chips. They are addictive . . . don't be surprised if those around you fight for the last bites!

Here's what you'll do:

  1. Cut the broccoli and cauliflower into equally sized pieces.
  2. Spread across a rimmed sheet tray, leaving space between each floret. Drizzle olive oil across the veggies and salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Roast in a 400°F oven for 18-23 minutes, or until crispy to your liking.

Why Every Man and Woman Needs to See This "Dimpled" Breast Photo ASAP

When doctors told Sherrie Rhodes that she had breast cancer, the diagnosis came as a complete shock. The only thing different that this mom of three had noticed was her breast "dimpling." However, until recently, she didn't know that this could be a worrying symptom of breast cancer.

Sherrie first spotted the puckering on her left breast in June and went to see her general practitioner two days later. Her GP immediately referred this 37-year-old from England to a breast cancer specialist, and a scan revealed a mass. Despite not feeling a lump, Sherrie soon learned that she had breast cancer after a biopsy confirmed her doctor's fear the same day.

Instead of processing her diagnosis privately, Sherrie posted a photo of her "dimpling" on Facebook to raise awareness for this often-overlooked symptom. "Please check your breast regularly and don't ignore anything that is different," Sherri wrote. "Please share and raise awareness."

Sherri told POPSUGAR that the only reason she was suspicious of her "dimples" and knew to immediately see her doctor was because of another woman's post that she came across a few months before her own diagnosis. "I suppose I'm just paying that favor forward and I just want to show other women that dimpling is something to look out for," she said. "If I can help one person like that one person helped me, then showing a bit of flesh is worth it. I want women (and men) to check their breasts regularly and know what to look out for."

RHONY Star Luann Just Gave Us a Peek Inside Her Hamptons Newlywed Home

Luann D'Agostino (formerly Countess Luann de Lesseps) of Real Housewives of New York has always had a thing for the Hamptons. She retreated to the picturesque town of Bridgehampton after her divorce, living in a sprawling barn-style estate. Now, the newlywed has settled into a charming 19th-century Sag Harbor home that would give even castmate Bethenny Frankel's beautiful Hamptons home a run for its money. The Greek revival house features wide-plank flooring, soaring ceilings, and wood-burning fireplaces. There's even a warm and welcoming kitchen, perfect for hosting her RHONY gal pals for a boozy brunch. But the "crown jewel," as Luann describes in a video tour she made for real-estate series Open House, is the dock on Sag Harbor Cove. It's the perfect place to take out a boat, jump into the water to cool off, or just to sit and admire the stunning view. We're sure Luann and her new hubby Tom are taking in lots of Summer sunsets together here.

This Woman's Powerful Post Proves No One Is Above "Mom Friends"

For some reason, there's this stigma about having "mom friends" – like it's a consolation prize for not being able to maintain real, adult relationships once you have kids. I felt as such when I was pregnant – that I wouldn't need this particular category of women in my life. Was I ever wrong.

So was Gylisa Jayne, a U.K. mom who recently posted on Facebook about why she never wanted "mummy" friends.

"I didn't want to sit in noisy soft plays, or talk about different coloured shit," she wrote. "I didn't want to have knowledge about best nappy brands, or know exactly how many fanny stitches we all had."

She didn't like the idea of cliques and felt that she had all the support she needed in her partner – the man she'd "chosen for this journey" would "be there for everything," she thought.

But then, she had a baby.

She quickly discovered the network she thought she had wasn't there, even her husband.

"Then there was my partner . . . the man that knew what I needed before I did," she wrote. "Only he didn't understand me anymore. He was trying to figure out his Dad Role. He didn't understand why I was crying about putting the kettle in the fridge. He didn't know why I'd forgotten to take the parcels to the post office. He didn't know why I had no love left over for him."

Turns out, the ones who would understand her were the women she'd shunned. So, she did what any sensible new parent should do and went out with her baby and made some mom friends, the ones who "had been there, done that" and were "fumbling through for the first time" just like she was.

"I made them laugh, and they made me howl with our observations of this bizarrely fabulous and horrendous journey," she said. "I had love left over for my partner again then. Because he might not get it – but there were scores of women that did."

To Gylisa, her mom friends aren't a fleeting relationship, they're a necessity. "I didn't want 'mummy friends,' she said. Turns out, "I needed them."

These Sorority Sisters Wore Their Own Version of a "Nude" Swimsuit to Send a Powerful Message

Nude isn't a one-size-fits-all shade, and the sorority sisters of Delta Sigma Theta showed this in one powerful photo. For the ladies' 10-year reunion in Costa Rica, each sister slipped into a nude swimsuit of her choice, and as a group, they struck the most confident poses against a scenic backdrop. They called the photo shoot "Melanin Illustrated," a play on Sports Illustrated. The message was clear: it's important to celebrate diverse beauty and spread the message of unity and acceptance for different body types and skin tones.

"The media, and especially social media, have a way of telling us what beauty should be," Jardan Doneghy said to Glamour. "We say, beauty is being confident that you are good enough, and that is beautiful in itself. We represent various shades and sizes and want to send a larger message of self-love, especially to our African American sisters who may sometimes feel overlooked and underrepresented."

The images of the sorority sisters quickly went viral, no doubt because of the meaning behind the photos. It doesn't hurt that each one of these women is an accomplished individual who, as Jardan said, brings her "personal best to the table." We have a feeling these sisters have inspired others out there to view life in the same way. They've certainly inspired us.

I Finally Found the Best Frying Pan - and It Doesn't Stick

My husband doesn't do a whole lot of cooking. And by that I mean he doesn't do any cooking. But within the last year, he's become a bit of a breakfast buff, happily (albeit, messily) whipping up omelets and scrambles nearly every morning. And while I am usually able to benefit from his stovetop efforts, I can't do so without listening to the relentless scraping that comes after the eggs have been plated . . . the nails-on-a-chalkboard-like sound the spatula makes when he hurriedly tries to get the hardened gunk off the pan. And this was a top of the line, commercial-quality ceramic nonstick pan that rang in at well over the $100 mark.

At some point, he had enough and insisted we get a new one. I naively assumed he just didn't know how to use it. That he wasn't coating it well enough before cooking. But he turned to the internet and started researching. Two days and one Amazon Prime purchase later, a WaxonWare 11-Inch Nonstick Frying Pan & Skillet arrived on our doorstep. I shook my head. How could a website where I buy dog food and batteries know anything about legit, chef-worthy cookware?

We've had the pan for eight months and it cooks everything like a dream, evenly, too, which is a lot to say given that we have a General Electric electric stove from the '50s that cooks nothing evenly. And even after eight months, it still cleans like a breeze - I barely put it in any effort. We've made everything from eggs to chicken piccata to veggie stir-fry on it. Once we even forgot about the eggs, turning an everyday scramble into an accidental frittata, which would have surely sent our previous fancy pan into a headspin. But the WaxonWare didn't flinch. I looked in awe as the 'tata slid off of the pan onto the plate, leaving a mere strip of egg crust on the side that basically fell off as soon as I ran it under water.

The pan comes in 8- and 11-inch options, so if you've grown tired of the post-cooking rigmarole that your current "nonstick" pan puts you through, it may be time to give the WaxonWare a try. I won't use anything else.

I Lost My Husband 3 Days After Welcoming Our First Baby

There I sat, my 3-day-old infant in my arms, trembling in fear as chaos and horror played out in my living room. Muffled by my bedroom door were sirens, chattering voices, and screams that will forever haunt my dreams. Frozen and in a state of shock, all I could see in my mind was the lifeless face of the only man I ever intended to love, his lips white and his body lying on the floor in an unnatural state. "I couldn't feel a pulse, but he has to be alive," I told myself. A police officer slowly opened my door and disturbingly made his way to my bed. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see the willing arms of family members reaching out for my infant son. As the words "He's deceased" came out of the officer's mouth, all went black.

A stray bullet is how the news reported the story, but we will never know the whole truth. The bullet that killed Justin went against pure logic and had a statistical probability of one in infinity. In a drunken stupor, my backyard neighbor fired his 9mm semi-automatic handgun. The bullet managed to travel through his screen door (dodging dozens of trees) over 200 feet to our home. It crashed through our glass door and blinds, continued across our living room, and finally stopped when it hit Justin in the head at the very second he jumped up from our sofa.

We tend to refer to the next day as "the day the music died." I had a 3-day old-baby and now a dead husband.
It's been two years since that tragic day, and at 33 years old, I see myself a much sadder but wiser girl. Going through something so horrific and life-altering not only changes the way you see the world, it transforms it. Grief is a very personal thing, and while I would never claim to be an expert on coping, I do know firsthand how to live with it. I like to compare it to a scar. More specifically, an internal scar on your heart and in your mind that follows you everywhere. A dark cloud that hovers over everything good and beautiful for the rest of your life. For one to truly understand the full gravity of the situation, you have to know the story as a whole, not just the ending. Therefore, I must jump back 19 years.

I was barely a teen, a 14-year-old girl in the eighth grade, when I first met and fell in love with Justin Ayers. He could play the guitar like Jimi Hendrix and crack a joke like Jerry Seinfeld. He was a smart, talented, adorable, funny, passionate boy, and I took notice. As I think back on our love story, a specific song lyric comes to mind: "Each night I ask the stars up above, why must I be a teenager in love?" I would sob, "Why can't we just get married today?" My friends and family (with the exception of my mom) would chuckle at the idea, dismissing us as kids who would grow up and realize it's just the hormones. But I never once doubted. In 2003 (one year after I graduated high school), we finally tied the knot.

Over the next 10 years, Justin and I made our own rules in life. We had several goals we wanted to pursue, so we decided to wait to start a family, knowing we needed time to grow up. We formed multiple bands, traveled for leisure and work, and wrote and recorded an album together. It was definitely outside the norm, but it was our norm, and we savored it. Then one morning, I woke up and suddenly felt different. I wanted a baby! And Justin agreed. We'd been married for 10 years, and we both knew we were ready to become parents. We got busy between the sheets and in September 2013, I became pregnant with our son, Jax.

On June 14, 2014, I remember looking at my infant son and realizing, "I finally understand!" His hair was thick and silky, his lips were bright red, and his eyes were captivating. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, bringing a child into this world has to be one of the most incredible feelings a woman can experience in life. A few minor birthing complications cost us an extra day in the hospital, but on the third evening, we were released and went home to be a family.

We tend to refer to the next day as "the day the music died." I had a 3-day-old baby and now a dead husband. I was a brand-new mother and now a widow at only 31 years old. I never had a chance to tell Justin goodbye or tell him how much I loved him. I like to think he already knew.

We buried Justin on a Saturday, exactly one week after Jax was born. The day after his funeral, the crowds were starting to disperse, and my support system was dwindling down to a much smaller group. It seems incomprehensible to try to portray the level of darkness I slipped into. A darkness that is so scary, I wasn't "allowed" to be left alone for one second. Not even to take a shower.

Life is a series of choices, and this choice to live started with my decision to get up off the bathroom floor and feed my infant son.
"Jess, you OK in there?" my friend Casey hollered as she banged on the bathroom door, "Jax is crying and needs to eat. Do we need to break the door down?" Time seemed frozen as I realized it had been two hours since I'd snuck away to the bathroom, granting my first chance to be alone since losing Justin. I took it as my only opportunity to bask in my own misery. The light from the hall shone brightly under the door as I lay in a pool of tears staring at everyone's feet pacing back and forth. With the chill of the bathroom tile on my cheek being my only comfort from the pain, I decided in that moment that I was ready to completely give up. I wanted to die.

I could hear multiple voices in the hallway, all pleading for me to open the door. But in the distance I could hear a tiny voice that resonated in my heart. It was Jax, he was hungry, and I knew I was his source for food. "We are sending someone to the store for formula," my mom said to me. That was the defining moment when I had to make a choice, life or death. I realized that even though the life I'd worked so hard for was gone, I could try and start a new one. My son needed me to survive, and I needed him. It took me over 10 minutes to actually stand to my feet, but once I did, I felt a little hopeful. Life is a series of choices, and this choice to live started with my decision to get up off the bathroom floor and feed my infant son.

Over the next year, I was like a chameleon. I became so many different versions of myself that I didn't know who I was anymore. Was I Justin's wife or his widow? Was I a stay-at-home mom who used to be a musician or would I sing again? Would I ever have the opportunity to have another child? I had always wanted three. The endless questions and constant wonder consumed me from the inside out. For close to 10 months, I disappeared from any social scene, social media, or social circle that didn't include a few select people. I was hiding from the world and wasting away to nothing, a shell of my former self. Then it happened again. I looked at my now-10-month-old baby and felt ashamed. That hungry infant, once crying for mommy's milk, was now starting to talk, walk, and think. Looking at my gorgeous baby boy, I once again realized that it was time for me to make another choice between life or death.

Looking back on the last two years of my life, I realize how many choices and decisions I had to make to arrive where I'm at today. I needed to find "me" again, and that required throwing myself back into my biggest passion, which had ironically become my biggest fear: music. My love for performing and music was something I shared with Justin, and it was now something I was forced to explore on my own. By sheer circumstance, I reconnected with a former bandmate and was presented with the opportunity to fill in on a few gigs. With much hesitation, I accepted. Declining the opportunity and turning my back on what I used to love would have been the much safer bet. But I knew it would mean I would end up spending the rest of my life running away from the pain and the joy it would bring.

The roller coaster of emotions I go through during a live show are endless. However, I choose to face them every night because in the end, the good outweighs the bad. I maintain the idea though that the happiness I experience day to day is by my own choosing. Every single day I wake up like everyone else and I'm faced with a choice. Some days I hate life and choose to be sad, angry, hurt, scared, resentful, and lonely. Other days I feel blessed and choose to be happy, optimistic, thankful, forgiving, and compassionate. Each day is a new decision, and with each decision brings a new outcome. I can only hope I'm making the right choices for my future, especially for Jax's.

When I close my eyes at night, I like to tell myself three things: I will be eternally grateful for you, my mommy! I will forever worship you, my Justin! And I will always love you, my Jax!

Some of the greatest quotes in life come to us in the form of song lyrics. So, I will leave you with these words from Aerosmith: "Life's a journey, not a destination. And I just can't tell just what tomorrow brings."

Gordon Ramsay Critiques Toddlers in This Hilarious Spoof of Master Chef Junior

Gordon Ramsay stopped by The Late Late Show With James Corden on Aug. 1, and things took a hilarious turn, as expected. The pair debuted a new show called Master Chef Junior Junior, a toddler version of Gordon's popular miniature-chef show. The overly dramatic voice-over in the pretend episode says, "First came Master Chef, then the stakes were raised and the ages were lowered with Master Chef Junior. And now, we're making our biggest show yet with Master Chef Junior . . . Junior."

Your heart won't be able to handle the cuteness as you watch the tiniest humans attempt to impress Gordon and James with their culinary skills, which include a Play-Doh doughnut, raw meat, and bread stuffed with a toy car. "I said no toys," Gordon says as he bites into the roll and pretends to scold the child. Meanwhile, James thinks he's "just eaten some Lego," and the food doesn't sit with him too well. The whole thing is too hilarious to handle, but unfortunately Gordon confirms it's "never coming to a screen near you." Watch the video for yourself if you're in need of a really good laugh!

3 Ways to Revive Leftover Rice

Even 12 hours of refrigeration will dehydrate rice, leaving it tough, dry, and sticky. There are a few quick methods of reviving it, so it tastes almost as fluffy and light as the day it was made. No matter what your method of preparation, oil and a little liquid are the keys to helping rice retain its moisture and clump-free texture.

  • Reheat it in the microwave: For every cup of rice, add a few tablespoons of broth or water. Cover the bowl of rice with plastic wrap or another bowl to create a steaming effect as it reheats.
  • Stir-fry it: In a large wok or sauté pan, heat canola or peanut oil on high. Make a fried rice, breaking up the lumps of rice with a wooden spoon so the oil coats the granules evenly.
  • Stove-top steam it: In a sauce pan, add the rice with a few tablespoons of butter and a splash of broth or water. Cover the pan and steam the rice on a low flame. Stir occasionally until the rice is heated thoroughly.

Look Back on Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II's 70-Year Marriage in Pictures

After almost 70 years of marriage, Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II are still going strong. The two were first introduced in 1934, when she was only 8 years old, but it wasn't until their meeting at the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth in July 1939 - Elizabeth was 13 and Philip was 18 - that they fell in love and began to exchange letters. In November 1947, the two made things official when they tied the knot during a luxurious ceremony at Westminster Abbey. Nearly a year after their wedding day, Elizabeth gave birth to the couple's first child, Prince Charles, and they welcomed their daughter, Princess Anne, two years later. Over the years, the pair have shared a number of sweet moments together as they carry out their royal duties across the globe. Now that Prince Philip has officially retired, look back at his best appearances with Queen Elizabeth II.

The young royal is set to attend Thomas's Battersea School, a private school in South London, in September. "Their Royal Highnesses are delighted to have found a school where they are confident George will have a happy and successful start to his education," Kensington Palace officially announced in March. The school is about a 30-minute drive from Will and Kate's home in Kensington Palace, and according to the school's website, it focuses on "enjoyment, learning and achievement." George is currently attending the Westacre Montessori School nursery until his Thomas's School debut in the Fall.

Hall posted a video on Facebook on Tuesday that shows him singing all of the best hits from the '90s in one go. *NSYNC? Check. Britney and Christina? Check, check. Coolio? You know it. Stars Mourn the Heartbreaking Death of Legendary Actor and Playwright Sam Shepard

Sam Shepard passed away on July 27 after complications from ALS, and Hollywood is mourning the death of the 73-year-old legendary actor and playwright. Fellow playwright Beau Willimon was among the first to pay tribute to him, posting a photo of Sam on Twitter and writing, "Sam Shepard is one of the greats. These eyes saw so much, and he wrote of what he saw with fearless, timeless honesty. RIP maestro." Since then, several other stars have taken to social media to share their favorite memories with the actor and tweet their condolences.

Sam is best known for his portrayal of pilot Chuck Yeager in 1983's The Right Stuff and was also known for his roles in films like The Notebook and Black Hawk Down. He is survived by his three children: Jesse, 47, from his marriage to O-Lan Jones, as well as Hannah, 31, and Samuel, 30, from his longtime relationship with Jessica Lange (the two separated in 2009).

Stock Tank Pools Are the Coolest Backyard Trend of Summer

As the temperature increases, so do our daydreams about stepping out our back door and slipping into the cool, refreshing water of a pool. But when we look at the cost to install a backyard pool - tens of thousands of dollars, gulp - reality snaps us awake. Luckily, there's an ingenious new trend taking over Instagram that can turn that pool fantasy into a reality, even for those on tight budgets: stock tank pools.

These galvanized steel tanks were originally intended to provide drinking water for livestock, but they can be used for so much more! People started turning these stock tank pools into mini swimming pools for their families to enjoy all Summer and through Winter when heated as hot tubs. Considering that these stock tank pools can hold up to 700 gallons of water while costing less than $400, it's easy to see how this ingenious idea is growing - and capturing the attention of social media.

So what does it take to create a stock tank pool of your own? Not much! Tractor Supply Company explains that whether you're leaving the pool above ground or digging out an in-ground home for it, you should always start with a solid and smooth level base. It recommends sand or granite for a foundation. Then it's time to thoroughly clean and install the stock tank pool. Once it's in place, you should add a small pump, filter, and some tubing to keep the water moving and fresh. You can hang these over the side of the pool for simplicity's sake or drill a hole in the tank for a more pro-looking install - but you'll have to seal the seams up afterward if you go this route.

Once this is done, you can fill up your pool and get to swimming! Tractor Supply Company recommends adding some chlorine or bleach on a regular basis to kill germs and algae. To really impress the neighbors, you can landscape around your new pool, adding a patio or deck to create a true backyard oasis. Then, all that's left to do is enjoy and find a new way to spend all that money you saved. Oh yeah, and showing off your savvy swimming hole by posting a pic to Instagram with #stockpooltank isn't a bad idea either!

Sansa Wasn't the Only One Weirded Out by That Awkward Game of Thrones Reunion

The following contains spoilers for Game of Thrones season seven.

If you were expecting a joyous reunion between other Stark siblings along the same lines as Jon and Sansa's emotional season six reconciliation, we have some bad news: Bran Stark's triumphant return to Winterfell on Game of Thrones is awkward as hell. When the only remaining true-born Stark son finally catches up with his eldest sister at their childhood home, there's a palpable weirdness between them. This is, of course, not for Sansa's lack of trying to catch up like normal siblings who've been separated for years . . . it's mostly because Bran behaves like an emotionless drone.

We get it, dude: you're the Three-Eyed Raven. But do you really have to act like a rock on Valium when your sister gives you a welcome-home hug? And what's with the whole "bringing up her traumatic sexual assault in casual conversation" thing?

Twitter, of course, didn't hold back when reacting to this long-awaited reunion. Luckily for the rest of us, Game of Thrones fans on social media have more enthusiasm than Bran . . . and a much better sense of humor than the one he seems to have lost completely beyond the Wall. Our only problem is that we can't pick a favorite out of these hilarious reactions below!

Patti Smith Pens a Beautiful Tribute to Sam Shepard: "I Said Goodbye to My Buddy"

Sam Shepard passed away at the age of 73 on July 27 after complications from ALS, and on Tuesday, musician Patti Smith penned a beautiful tribute to her late friend in The New Yorker. Patti looked back on her decades-long friendship with the legendary actor, writing, "We knew each other for such a long time. Our ways could not be defined or dismissed with a few words describing a careless youth. We were friends; good or bad, we were just ourselves. The passing of time did nothing but strengthen that."

Patti also wrote about her favorite memories with Sam and how he promised that he would one day take her across the American Southwest, though their plans came to a screeching halt when Sam was "stricken with a debilitating affliction." "He eventually stopped picking up and leaving. From then on, I visited him, and we read and talked, but mostly we worked. Laboring over his last manuscript, he courageously summoned a reservoir of mental stamina, facing each challenge that fate apportioned him."

Patti was in Lucerne, Switzerland, when she found out about Sam's passing. She spoke about his final moments, saying, "The rain fell when he took his last breath, quietly, just as he would have wished. Sam was a private man. I know something of such men. You have to let them dictate how things go, even to the end. The rain fell, obscuring tears. His children, Jesse, Walker, and Hannah, said goodbye to their father. His sisters Roxanne and Sandy said goodbye to their brother . . . I said goodbye to my buddy, calling to him, in the dead of night."

Sam and Patti met in the early '70s when he was a drummer for a folk group called the Holy Modal Rounders. The two quickly became friends and even worked on Sam's 1971 play Cowboy Mouth. In Patti's 2010 memoir, Just Kids, she credited Sam for encouraging her to try pairing her poetry with music. Read Patti's tribute in full here.

A Vet's Urgent Warning Against Leaving Dogs in Hot Cars Needs to Be Shared Immediately

If you're a pet owner, you've probably been in the following scenario at one point or another: it's a Sunday afternoon, and you're in the middle of a whirlwind of errands. You just took your dog by the vet for a quick checkup and still have to swing by the grocery store, get your nails done, and make it home for family dinner. As you pull into the grocery-store parking lot, you vow to make your trip quick because you'll be leaving your pup in the car - with the windows cracked, of course. Seems innocent, right?

Dr. Ernie Ward, a veterinarian and self-proclaimed pet advocate, is certainly familiar with the aforementioned situation. But Ward has made it his personal mission to ensure that dog owners know that while it may seem like an innocent thing to do, leaving an animal in a parked car on a steamy Summer day is actually incredibly dangerous. To demonstrate this, Ward decided to videotape himself sitting in a parked vehicle to see just how hot it would get inside over time. Spoiler alert: it got really hot, really fast.

Though the outdoor temperature was 95 degrees, the inside of the car reached a staggering 117 degrees during the 30 minutes Dr. Ward was inside. While he could see that it was breezy outdoors by observing the swaying trees, Ward said he couldn't feel any breeze in the car despite the slightly cracked windows, and it provided no relief from the quickly rising temperature. The vet explained how "helpless and frightening" a situation like the one he was in would feel for a dog left in the car. "Everything in my body is saying 'get out, get out, get out,'" he said.

Oh, and let's not forget the sweat factor. "I can just feel rivulets of sweat careening down my body . . . and I can do that; a dog can't. A dog can't perspire," Ward said. The fact that dogs are unable to sweat is what makes it so hazardous - and potentially fatal - to abandon one in a parked car when it's hot out. "You can make all the excuses you want. You can say, 'It'll just be for a second, and I'm gonna leave the windows cracked . . . but those excuses are meaningless unless you've sat in that car during that same time."

Watch the video ahead to hear what else Dr. Ward has to say about this hot (pun semi-intended) topic.

Trump Won the Presidency IRL, but He Lost to Mark Cuban For Sharknado 3

The fifth(!) Sharknado movie premieres this month, and the internet is awash with nostalgia for previous entries in the legendary franchise. This time around, though, an extremely interesting tidbit about our current president surfaced: just months before he announced his real-life presidential candidacy, Donald Trump was going to play the role of president in Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!

"A contract was drawn up and sent to Trump attorney Michael D. Cohen - the same attorney currently under FBI investigation in connection with the Russia inquiry," The Hollywood Reporter reports, adding that the negotiations fell through when one of the founders of the production company behind the franchise, David Latt, was told by Cohen that Trump was considering a run for president in 2016. Trump was quickly replaced by Mark Cuban of Shark Tank fame (more on this later) and Team Trump went bananas - as to be expected, they immediately threatened to sue. "Then we immediately heard from Trump's lawyer," recalls Latt. "He basically said, 'How dare you? Donald wanted to do this. We're going to sue you! We're going to shut the entire show down!'"

While the lawsuit never came to fruition, the Trump-Cuban rivalry is real - and in fact, this new anecdote explains a whole lot about the tension that we've all witnessed between the two of them since Trump announced he was running for office. The now years-long spat has featured Cuban questioning Trump's actual net worth, Cuban calling Trump the "Zoolander president," and Trump claiming that Cuban doesn't have the intellectual prowess to run for office like he did (among many, many other back and forths that are easily found via Twitter.) But what we can take away from this intriguing bit of information from the Sharknado producers is that Trump may have spoken too soon in dismissing Cuban offhandedly - and perhaps should consider the fact that he has beaten him to the presidency once, so who's to say that all the speculation about a 2020 run being in the cards for Cuban might not mean that he's once again face-to-face with his rival, albeit on a far more national stage? After all, it wouldn't be the first time that Sharknado has taught us something about American politics.

Check out Cuban's performance as the president on the small screen ahead.

A Look at Charming Prince Philip Through the Years

Before Princess Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth, she married the handsome foreign Prince Philip from Greece, who also happens to be her third cousin. According to Sally Bedell Smith's biography titled Elizabeth the Queen, Philip came from a tumultuous background despite his lineage. Born in 1921 on the island of Corfu, he moved to Paris at age 1 with his parents, Alice Marie and Prince Andrew of Greece. By age 8, he'd headed to England for boarding school. With generous good looks and confidence, Philip made his way to England with the help of royal relatives. He would later be invited to have lunch with the royal family, and that's when Elizabeth reportedly fell for him. During World War II, Philip served in the Mediterranean and Pacific, and he and Elizabeth wrote each other letters. By 1946, he was back in London and making regular visits to Buckingham Palace. During that Summer, he spent a month at the royal family's Balmoral Estate, where he proposed. Their wedding was held at Westminster Abbey on Nov. 20, 1947.

During their 70 years of marriage, most of them during Elizabeth's reign as the monarch, Prince Philip has been as constant as the queen herself, although he's a bit more controversial, making a few insensitive gaffes. But when he's not giving the press an unfortunate quote to run, he's either by the queen's side, working as a patron for several charities, or, until recently, enjoying carriage racing. In honor of his retirement, let's look back at pictures of Prince Philip over the years, then see the facts about the British royal family every diehard fan should know.
