6 Tips For Getting Ahead in a Male-Dominated Industry
I have a good news/bad news situation for you.
The good news: Fortune magazine cited 2017 as a record-breaking year for female Fortune 500 CEOs.
The bad news: we're talking about only 32 women on a list of 500.
Unfortunately, the Boys' Club is still alive and well. I've seen it throughout my career in tech, working for creative agencies and in innovation consulting. Women have always been outnumbered – and it gets more extreme the higher you climb.
That hasn't stopped me, though. If anything, it fuels my fire. I'm determined to make my mark and be a part of the change. Are you with me? If so, here are some tips for getting ahead in a male-dominated industry.
How This Mom "Decided Not to Die" When She Had Convulsions After Giving Birth to Twins
Tova Leigh, a fan-favorite parenting blogger, is known for using humor to jazz up the everyday experiences that all moms can relate to. But in a recent Facebook post, Leigh gets serious about the time she almost died from giving birth to her twin daughters four years ago.
The mother of three opened up about the moment during pregnancy when she found out she had pre-eclampsia, a pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure and signs of damage to another organ system, most often the liver and kidneys.
"I go in for a routine check-up at 28 weeks and get my blood pressure measured," she explained. "The nurse looks at me and asks: 'Is your eyesight blurry?' You immediately know it's not a great sign when someone asks you that. She makes a phone call, and I am asked to give a urine sample."
Full-blown eclampsia is a pretty terrifying disease and can even result in death if a mom isn't given the proper medical attention after giving birth, which explains why Tova spent the last two months of her pregnancy in the hospital on bed rest. And while it was what was best for the babies, she couldn't help feel for her older daughter.
"During all this time my eldest daughter Bella, who has just turned 2, is at home without her mummy," she wrote. "This is the hardest bit. I can take being in a hospital forever knowing that I am doing it for my unborn babies. I can stand the horrid food, the boredom, the fear . . . the whole shebang! The one thing that totally breaks me is being away from her. In my lowest moments, I find myself wishing the babies would just come already so I can get back to her."
At 35 weeks, Tova had a C-section, and everything went well at first. "When I first see the twins, I start to cry," she said. "They are so small. I don't expect them to be so small. Dina weighs exactly 2KG and Ally is not even that. At 1.9KG she is honestly the ugliest baby I have ever seen, but I love her with all my heart, and I am so relieved the ordeal is over."
Then, things took a turn.
"I am lying in a hospital bed in the intensive care unit after giving birth to my twins, at 35 weeks and three days. My blood pressure is 240 over 120, and my whole body is shaking. I have lost control of my muscles, and I can't speak. Three doctors rush into the room and stick an IV in my arm. I am now being pumped with drugs in a desperate attempt to reduce my blood pressure, which is out of control."
After realizing how dire the situation was, Tova decided to sneak a glance at her husband who was jolted awake by all the commotion.
"I look at my husband, and I can tell he has no clue what is going on, and I suddenly panic! I mean, how the hell am I going to leave my three girls with this guy who can't even tell I am about to die?! So I decide not to."
Read her post above to see what she did, mentally, to calm her body down and survive – and how she decided that "using humor as her secret weapon" would save her.
Chris Cornell's Daughter Performs a Tribute to Her Late Father and Chester Bennington
A moving and beautiful tribute to Chris Cornell & Chester Bennington this morning from Chris' daughter Toni and @RyanTedder... http://pic.twitter.com/0iFlHxs616
- Good Morning America (@GMA) August 4, 2017
Chris Cornell's daughter, Toni, is paying tribute to her late father the best way she knows how: through song. Nearly three months after his tragic death, the 12-year-old honored the Soundgarden frontman by covering Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" alongside OneRepublic on Good Morning America on Friday. The performance also honored Cornell's longtime friend and Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington, who died three weeks ago. Not only will Toni's voice give you chills, but it also has a special connection to the late singers. "Chester sang this at Chris's funeral," OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder said. "It's a very special song to us, and I think to most people and especially to Toni [Cornell] as well." Needless to say, there wasn't a dry eye in the house.

Hilary Duff Hits the Beach in Hawaii While Vacationing With Son Luca
Hilary Duff knows a thing or two about how to have a tropical getaway. The Younger actress enjoyed some quality time with her 5-year-old son, Luca, as they soaked up the sun in Wailea, HI, on Wednesday. Dressed in a black-and-white one-piece, the 29-year-old flaunted her incredible figure as she took to the water for some paddleboarding. Hilary definitely has a soft spot for the Hawaiian beaches. Aside from sneaking in some rest and relaxation on the island with her family, she is constantly showing off her insane abs in fashionable two-pieces.
Kids Always Beg For a Pet Dog, but No Dad Has Ever Responded Quite Like This
For generations, kids have begged their parents for a pet dog. It's essentially a childhood rite of passage, right up there with learning to ride a bike and threatening to run away from home. But only a few parents have likely drafted a legally binding "family dog contract" and went on to have each child sign the document before agreeing to add a furry friend to the household.
Herein is one of those parents. Father to Amy, Jessica, Casey, and Samantha, this dad created a 13-point contract and posted it to Imgur - possibly to make it hold up in a court of law? - before it went viral for its head-scratching requirements.
For instance, although the dad gets full veto power over the dog's name and breed (no slobberers, sorry), he refuses to allow anything fancier than "plain old dog food" for feeding purposes and he won't budge on the animal being a part of the family Christmas card in either name or likeness.
One area he did budge on? Although he originally mandated a 10-pound dog, it appears one of his children convinced him to amend the target weight to a more respectable 15 pounds.
It's clear he's raising his kids to be just as good at negotiating as their proud pop!

OK, Stop Laughing - Ta-Ta Towels Are Actually a Really Genius Idea For Breastfeeding
OK, clearly you are looking at that picture – of the woman lounging about with a bizarre terry-cloth boob-holder wrapped around her breasts – and laughing. "What a joke!" you're probably thinking.
But hear me out.
The creator of the Ta-Ta Towel invented this product because she was sick of boob sweat while she was getting ready postshower and didn't want to be forced to wear a constrictive bra every minute of the day.
All well and good, but what she probably didn't realize about her bizarre-yet-clever idea is that it's even more genius for breastfeeding mamas - especially breastfeeding women like me who hate wearing bras and leak everywhere.
Here's why this silly Ta-Ta Towel is getting my solid, 100-percent-serious recommendation:
When I'm in the comfort of my own home, I like to nurse topless. It's really the best. I don't have to deal with nursing-bra clips, my baby isn't swatting away the fabric of my t-shirt, and I figure it's some great skin-to-skin bonding to boot. Plus, my overworked boobs can be as free as they need to be while churning out milk for a hungry infant.
There's only one big annoyance with my braless breastfeeding sessions: whichever nipple isn't currently being suckled by my bundle of joy is dripping like a leaky faucet. If I'd forgotten to grab a towel beforehand, which nine times out of 10 I have (I'm tired, give me a break), my tummy will end up getting soaked, and then over the course of the day, I'll notice the once subtle whiff of milk evolve into a rancid, eye-watering situation requiring a hot shower, for which I do not have time.
This Ta-Ta Towel, however, is the answer to my problem. It lets me still live my topless dreams – by wearing it, I'm still technically bra-free and sans shirt – but still sops up my leaking milk without me needing to have one hand pressed against my unused nipple. I can now use that free hand to check Facebook on my phone! Hidden benefit!
And, sure, it also helps with boob sweat, which is the least of my worries these days.
So, you might laugh at the thought of it (and balk at the $45 price tag, understandably), but I have a feeling if you just give it a try, the Ta-Ta Towel will be your new breast friend.
If This "Pilgrim Dress" Is Worth $450, Please Let Us Know
Should you indulge in a little shopping on the Creatures of Comfort site, you might just come across the Sequoia Dress, which rings in at $450, has a high neckline, buttons down the bodice, and has full bishop sleeves. It comes in army green, blue, and black, and there's a short version too, called the Vanderbilt. It is also enraging quite a few Twitter users. "Bless everyone who is pretty enough, skinny enough, and rich enough to wear this dress," a BuzzFeed writer posted, sharing an image of the product. "Adding this to my Amazon Amishlist," someone else replied.
We have to admit, the design is pretty plain, and it's not exactly flattering, ballooning out at the waist with the addition of material for pockets on each side. We can see why people are referring to it as a "pilgrim dress." And we probably wouldn't spend just shy of $500 on a lightweight piece like this. But, it does have its place in fashion. Right now, there are plenty of labels offering similar silhouettes for Fall that are perfect for the modest type. Below, we rounded them up so you can see for yourself and let us know if you're on board (the Mayflower) with this look. Just kidding, just kidding.
Kourtney Kardashian's Glittery Set May Look Expensive, but It's Actually Superaffordable
When traveling, most of us usually opt for a simple tracksuit, but Kourtney Kardashian isn't like most people. The reality star, who keeps it chic with her many street style looks, was seen rocking an olive green set that was covered in glitter.
With the red and white stripe going down the wide-leg bottoms and the shimmery weave, we half expected the set to be from Gucci or Missoni. To our surprise, both the pants and the ribbed sweater were from H&M and they only ring in at $105. Copy Kourtney's chic airport look for your next trip, and buy the same set if you want to give the athleisure trend a try.
Here's What Barack Obama Has Been Up to Since He Walked Out of the White House - and Our Lives
Barack Obama officially left the White House on Jan. 20, and he did so faster than we could say, "Don't go!" Since his departure, Barack has been fulfilling his passion for adventure and settled into permanent vacation mode (really, though, can you blame him?). While many of us are still longing for his return, the sad truth is that Barack is gone and off living his best life.
38 FOMO-Inducing Photos From Lollapalooza That Are Almost as Good as Actually Going
Now that Summer is in full swing, it not only means it's time for pool parties, s'mores, and bucket list-worthy vacations, but also plenty of music festivals. With Coachella and Bonnaroo now behind us, it's time to get pumped for Chicago's Lollapalooza. The music festival kicked off in the early '90s after being created by Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell and toured the country each Summer until taking a break in 1997. Lollapalooza finally put down roots in Grant Park, Chicago, in 2005, where it has been held each year ever since and hosted acts like Amy Winehouse, Pearl Jam, and Kanye West.
Whether you're a Lollapalooza pro or you're still considering buying tickets for this year's festival (the lineup includes Chance the Rapper and Lorde, FYI), these photos will make you fall in love with the annual music festival in no time.
The 1 Homemade Condiment You Should (and Can) Make Immediately
If you already make your own salad dressings, then why not take it a step further by preparing your own condiments, too? One of the easiest and most decadent ways to dress up salads, appetizers, meats, and even desserts is balsamic glaze. It only requires one bottle of balsamic vinegar and 10 minutes. Here's the really easy method.
How Michelle Obama Really Feels About Barack Wearing the Same Tux For 8 Years Straight
During her eight years as the First Lady, Michelle Obama wowed us time and time again with her stunning style. When she wasn't sporting elegant floor-length dresses for special occasions, you could find her keeping it cool and casual in one of her more dressed-down outfits. We've spent our fair share of time fawning over her best fashion moments, but the former FLOTUS just revealed an interesting tidbit about her style that we'd honestly never considered - until now.
When Michelle made an appearance at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in California, she got real about the "unfair" difference between her and Barack's fashion choices. The mother of two candidly admitted that her husband wore the same exact tuxedo and shoes for every single state dinner, a glamorous affair in which the head of government from another country visits the White House for a formal meal.
Michelle described how she, on the other hand, was scrutinized by the media for every outfit choice at these events. "This is the unfair thing . . . no matter what we do, he puts on that same tux. People take pictures of the shoes I wear, the bracelets, the necklace," she said at the conference. And yet, it was never publicized that Barack somehow got away with sporting the same tux throughout his presidency.
Watch the video below to hear Michelle openly discuss the biased coverage of her fashion choices, and then catch a glimpse of her state dinner looks to see exactly what she means. Note Barack's never-changing tuxedo as you scroll.

To top off her boss résumé, the princess has also earned her stripes as a street style star to watch at Fashion Week, often wearing her trademark poufy skirts. Her style is refined, like that of any royal, but she's also one of the most fashion-forward of the ladies, often wearing bold prints and silhouettes you wouldn't see on Kate Middleton or even Queen Rania. With an eye for style - she was a fashion editor after all - and the wardrobe to match, it's time Princess Deena Aljuhani Abdulaziz lands on your radar. Scroll on for her best outfit tricks and tips, because once you set eyes on these looks, you'll never forget them.

A Former Disneyland Security Employee Reveals What It's Like Working at the Park
For guests, Disneyland is the "happiest place on earth," but what do employees actually think about the park? Unsurprisingly, staff at Disneyland see what goes on behind closed castle doors, and while it isn't always pretty, most still seem to believe in the magic. A former Disneyland security employee did an IAmA on Reddit, and they revealed some of the interesting things they saw on the job and the reason they loved working there despite it all.
1. How does Disney balance the need to maintain a "magical" experience in challenging situations?
"I get told a lot that people never see security and that's one of the goals. Unless it's a safety issue there's never more than two security escorting drunks out. We use 'undercovers' to catch shoplifters and bring them backstage before accusing or searching them.
"Even when we talk to people who are drunk, it's as few of us as possible, not only to keep it as un-embarrassing as possible but also to make it low key. We don't want to interrupt your experience by dealing with another guest."
2. So the drunk people and potential thieves just walk off calmly?
"Thieves are brought backstage. If they have merch they are arrested. We have a police sub station on property. Drunks are escorted off property. If they are that drunk we don't let them go to their car and tell them to come back after 2-4 hours."
3. Who breaks the rules more, guests or employees?
"Passholders break the most rules. They seem to think that pass is a golden ticket. Club 33 members too."
4. I read an article at some point about Tinder (or Grindr?) hookups at Disneyland. Is this an issue you've run into?
"People have sex there all the time. ALL THE TIME. On rides, in the parking structure. When they get caught they get escorted out . . . unless they are underage then we legally have to call parents. That one is fun.
"There was the couple we saw on haunted Mansion. Girl was blowing this guy. Asked to stop twice over the speaker and didn't. So when we pull them out of the exit I said, 'Hi folks, do you know why I am talking to you?' The girl goes 'We didn't do anything and you can't prove it.' The guy smiles and says 'Yeah we did.'"
5. Any issues with famous people but things were ignored because of the celebrity/fame?
"If they pay enough money they can get the run of the place. Before it was closed, Kim and Kanye bought out the BBQ place so no one was allowed on that side of the park. Oh and we had a prince get the park to himself for three hours for photos once."
6. I know many Orange County residents who believe that Disneyland runs Anaheim, including (to a point) Anaheim PD. How much power do you feel Disney has over the city?
"Massive pull. Disney owns Anaheim. They get stuff passed when it benefits them, they get huge tax breaks. I truly believe they can do anything because of the revenue they bring in."
7. Weirdest thing someone lost? Most valuable?
"People lost pipes (crack and weed) a lot. Had someone say they had a $500 camera disappear."
8. Strollers are everywhere and most have bags of stuff in or on them. How does Disney help guests keep their own belongings safe when they need to leave it to go on rides or watch their kids?
"We advise you not to leave your stuff on a stroller. Realistically if you leave a $500 camera on a stroller you are asking for it. Don't leave anything on your bag. Sh*tty people exist everywhere."
9. What is your absolute favorite memory from working there?
"I got a call for a lost little boy. We had the kid, no parents. When I get there I meet this little 7-year-old who grabs my hand and starts dragging me [looking] for his mom. Absolutely adorable kid. We find mom in less than five minutes and she's just in tears. They told me they were in line for Small World when he vanished so I walked them up there and put them in the front of the line. They were so sweet and thankful. It's that kind of stuff I loved getting to do."
10. Does Disney pay an unusually high amount for unusually competent security staff?
"That's cute. Most of security is former law enforcement, or kids. They don't pay well, which is why I quit. I loved the work but the pay is crap."
11. What do you think makes Disneyland magical?
"The things we can do for people. Disney is truly an escape from reality. They truly make dreams come true for some people. I used to do little things like picking families to move them to the front of the line, or find a couple just married and get them VIP seats for fireworks or world of color. Making people feel special is what makes it magical."
You Can Swim With Jellyfish (Without Getting Stung!) in This Pacific Island Lake
Jellyfish have more been a reason to get out of the water than to dive in, but you may want to visit this lake inhabited by the gelatinous animals. Jellyfish Lake, located on an island off the coast of Koror, Palau, is home to swarms of jellyfish that are safe to swim with. The saltwater lake was once connected to the ocean, and it's said that the rise of sea levels post-Ice Age trapped them in the area. The jellyfish do actually have stingers, but they're far too small to be felt by humans. In the many photos on Instagram, it looks like travelers have even been able to touch them safely.
But before you start booking your trip, you might have to wait until lake conditions improve. According to National Geographic, the jellyfish population - which used to be at an average of eight million - is now down to nearly half a million and decreasing by the day. Several possible factors including climate change, drought, and other changes in their ecosystem have been speculated. All hope is not lost, however. A National Geographic explorer-in-residence noted that the population was once able to recover in the late 1990s after El Niño, so it's not unlikely that it could do it again.
Keep your fingers crossed, and don't remove Jellyfish Lake from your bucket list just yet! Check out some photos ahead in the meantime.
6 Reasons Engineered Hardwood Is Probably Perfect For Your Home
Hardwood floors are many a homeowner's dream. They're classic and timeless, and they add so much character to any space - but they do have limitations. Hardwood floors can be expensive, require a lot of care, and can't be used in certain areas of your home. But what if you could get the look of hardwood without the downsides?
Engineered hardwood flooring is a lesser known but by no means inferior flooring material that has a ton of benefits, and it can be used almost anywhere. Engineered boards are made up of several layers of plywood, with a layer of hardwood veneer on top. We talked to Allan Singh, general manager of Havwoods North America, an international flooring company specializing in hardwood and engineered hardwood flooring, to find out just how engineered flooring differs from traditional hardwood.
Sustainability
One of the main benefits of engineered hardwood that Singh identifies is its sustainability. Because of its construction of plywood and veneer, it uses less wood and contributes less to deforestation than traditional hardwood. "It's a more cost-effective and more efficient way to use this natural resource," he said. Plywood is also made using low levels of VOCs (volatile organic compounds), which makes the air in our homes less polluted and easier to breathe.
Durability and Heat Resistance
High-traffic areas or homes with pets and children might want to avoid traditional hardwood, but engineered hardwood can be a great alternative for those seeking the style of hardwood with more durability. It's better at standing up to scratches, and it can be spot-repaired if necessary. But that's not all. "Where I would typically recommend using an engineered wood is an environment that features under-floor heating, as well as rooms that have a glass facade," Singh noted. "Because of the construction of an engineered board, it's less susceptible to warping and movement due to that excessive heat."
Cost
If you want a more affordable option than solid hardwood floors without sacrificing quality, Singh recommends engineered hardwood. The price of any kind of wood floor depends on the thickness of the plank, and since engineered hardwood floors tend to be thinner, this is reflected in their price. But you still get a great-quality floor with the beauty of hardwood.
Practicality
Ever wanted to have hardwood flooring in your kitchen, foyer, or mudroom, but it just wasn't practical? Singh says engineered hardwoods are great for these kinds of rooms that experience foot traffic and may be more prone to some moisture. But he says homeowners should still avoid engineered hardwood and traditional hardwood in your bathroom - neither of these products is fully moisture-resistant. "It all depends on the maintenance of the floor afterward - if water is allowed to sit on that floor and seep through, it can affect that board and it can cause issues later on."
Stability
Traditional hardwood floors can warp, shift, and bend over time in all kinds of environments. Moisture and even seasonal shifts can cause gaps between the boards. But engineered hardwoods don't experience the same problem. "The construction with the plywood and the veneer allows for that stability. The multiple layers of the plywood allow the engineered boards to be less susceptible to movement when installed," Singh noted.
Maintenance
When it comes to cleaning and upkeep, you can't get much easier than engineered hardwood. "It actually really doesn't require too much work," Singh said. "You basically just vacuum the floor, and with a light mop, you apply one of the cleaning solutions." There's no scrubbing and no strong chemical smell, as the recommended cleaning solution is a light soap. You should always use the floor cleaner recommended by your manufacturer and avoid DIY solutions to prevent damage.

If I'd forgetten to grab a towel beforehand, which nine times out of 10 I have (I'm tired, give me a break), my tummy will end up getting soaked and then over the course of the day, I'll notice the-once subtle whiff of milk evolve into a rancid, eye-watering situation requiring a hot shower. For which I do not have time.
This Ta-Ta Towel, however, is the answer to my problem. It lets me still live my topless dreams – by wearing it, I'm still technically bra-free and sans shirt – but still sops up my leaking milk without me having to have one hand pressed against my unused nipple.
The Reason This Denmark Prince Refuses to Be Buried Next to His Wife Is So Insane
While most of the world is aware that it's 2017 and men and women are f*cking equal, some people still struggle to come to terms with that fact. One such individual happens to be Prince Henrik of Denmark. It was revealed this week that the 83-year-old royal has decided not to be buried next to his wife, Queen Margrethe, when the time comes. A representative for the Danish royal family announced on Friday that despite having a specially designed sarcophagus at Roskilde Cathedral in Denmark just for the couple, Henrik has refused to use that as his final resting place. The reason? He's bitter about the fact that he's never been named king during Margrethe's ascent to the throne, saying that having a lesser title is a form of gender discrimination.
"It makes me angry that I am subjected to discrimination," he told French newspaper Le Figaro. "Denmark, which is otherwise known as an avid defender of gender equality, is apparently willing to consider husbands as worth less than their wives." The family's director of communications further explained the situation to Danish newspaper B.T., saying, "It is no secret that the prince for many years has been unhappy with his role and the title he has been awarded in the Danish monarchy. For the prince, the decision not to be buried beside the queen is the natural consequence of not having been treated equally to his spouse - by not having the title and role he has desired."
Margrethe has been queen for 45 years, and the two have always appeared to have a good relationship. Henrik, who is originally from France and holds the traditional title of prince consort, still wants to be buried in Denmark, just not next to Margrethe.

Miley Cyrus's Favorite Outfit of All Time Is Also the Most Naked
Even though Miley Cyrus has scaled back on the risqué outfits, she still has fond memories of her past looks. Her favorite red-carpet dress of all time? That would be her silver, crystal Versace ensemble from the 2015 VMAs. You'll remember the barely there outfit clearly because it was the most naked she's ever been. Looking back at the photos, we're still pretty shocked she wore that.
Some might say Miley would regret this particular look, but she admitted her worse fashion faux pas were from 2008 to 2013. The Grammys in particular were "rough and tough" for her. Relive the singer's infamous VMAs look below, and then take a trip down memory lane by reminiscing over her Grammys dresses.
To This Day, Selena's "Dreaming of You" Album Is the Bestselling Latin Album Ever
Selena's album Dreaming of You is a collection of songs that, 22 years later, still touches all of our hearts. Her fifth and final studio album was released after her untimely death on July 18, 1995, and became the fastest-selling album in the United States in 1995. The Recording Industry Association of America certified the album 35 times platinum in the Latin field. To this day, Dreaming of You is the bestselling Latin album of all-time in the United States. This album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, making Selena the first Latin artist to do so. It featured a total of 13 tracks, and some of them were her most popular hits like "I Could Fall in Love," "Dreaming of You," "Amor Prohibido," "Como La Flor" and "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom." "Dreaming of You" became Selena's highest-charting Billboard Hot 100 single ever.

A Woman Invited the Obamas to Her Daughter's Wedding - and They Actually Responded
Barack and Michelle Obama have been enjoying their time out of the White House, but they still find time to respond to wedding invitations. The former POTUS and FLOTUS had an adorable reply to an engaged couple after the mother of bride-to-be Liz Whitlow sent them a wedding invitation. "Congratulations on your wedding," the letter reads. "We hope that your marriage is blessed with love, laughter, and happiness and that your bond grows stronger with each passing year. This occasion marks the beginning of a lifelong partnership, and as you embark on this journey, know you have our very best for the many joys and adventures that lie ahead."
Naturally, the bride-to-be was completely shook as she documented the moment on social media. And this isn't the first time the Obamas have pulled a stunt like this. They've been known to send notes for everything from birth announcements to graduations, and the fact that they continue to do so even after leaving the White House says a lot about them. We'll definitely keep this in mind when the holidays roll around.

What Is "Hive Mind," and What Does It Have to Do With American Horror Story?
Be of like mind. The official poster for #AHSCult is here. http://pic.twitter.com/oRGmYQXXia
- AmericanHorrorStory (@AHSFX) July 27, 2017
American Horror Story is about to cut deep, and we're here for every single second of it. In July, a special presentation at Comic-Con yielded the title of the new season: Cult. Since then, even more details have poured out. AHS creator Ryan Murphy dropped a bunch of new hints on his Twitter account, while the first official trailer left plenty of room for speculation. But it was the show's first official poster, which shows a woman with a beehive brain, that gave us the most information out of everything. "Be of like mind," the poster is captioned. If you're familiar with the concept of a "hive mind," this is where everything clicks.
Not only does the concept of the "hive mind" perfectly explain the first official poster, it also gives context to Murphy's bizarre bee-man snap from a few weeks ago, which he presented as an integral part of the theme. What exactly is a "hive mind"? It's a common trope from the sci-fi universe; it traces back to a "collective consciousness" or "group mind" that is shared by a community of people. A "group mind" is a lot less malevolent than a "hive mind." There's a sense of equality and harmony, where all members are linked by a set of unifying beliefs, or a connected state of mind.
One of the most striking (and popular) examples of a "group mind" exists in Minority Report. In the 2002 Steven Spielberg film, which is an adaptation of Philip K. Dick's novel, Tom Cruise is the head of a "pre-crime" unit that attempts to stop illegal activities before they happen. They predict crimes with the help of three "pre-cogs," mutants who can see the future and predict crimes. They have a "group mind," and they all foresee the exact same series of events at the exact same time. (Except when one of them doesn't, which is called, you guessed it, a "minority report.")

A collective consciousness can take a dark turn when a single entity appears to indoctrinate underlings and deprive them of free will. This is where the "hive mind" comes in. It refers to the hierarchical structure in a beehive, where every worker bee has a specific, compartmentalized job, and they all serve one queen. In the context of something like a cult, for instance, there may be one overlord who brainwashes subjects into obedience. These members of AHS's cult may be victims to this "hive mind." Completely devoid of individuality and identity, their one purpose is to serve that greater power.
This entity at the top can be many things. It could be a person, like a "grandmaster" of the cult. It could be some creature or idol that all the members worship. It could be Satan himself. Hell, it could be an illness that spreads throughout the population like wildfire. While there are plenty of options, the basic skeleton of the concept seems clear. In American Horror Story: Cult, something has taken hold of these terrifying clown people we've been seeing in all the teasers.
Lastly, we have to factor in the 2016 election, which Murphy teased as a part of the theme earlier this year. In my analysis of the first teaser, I pointed out that the voice-over's rhetoric closely matches the logic of Donald Trump. "Do you ever feel alone?" the full-length teaser asks. "Does it seem like no one really understands you? Do some people just make you sick? Are you afraid? We can set you free. We will make you strong. We want you." As we said before, Trump largely managed to win the presidential race by rallying the "angry white man" against the progressive movement. Strangely enough, that sounds a lot like the mechanics behind "hive mind." But hey, we're only speculating.

What 1 School Included in a Student's Report Card Is Raising Eyebrows
Ah, report cards. Some students look forward to the day these arrive, while others would prefer if they never found their way into the mailbox again. But for parents, report cards are essential to knowing how their child is performing in school.
When Yeshiva Ketana, a Jewish school in Inwood, NY, sent out this report card in early January, a surprising sentence concluded the letter.
The last paragraph reads:
Since our goal is to share accurate information with the parents, and not to discourage or hurt a student, great discretion must be used before allowing your child to view his report card. Certainly, report cards should not be seen by students without parental permission and guidance. If after reviewing the enclosed report card, you would like us to develop a second version of this report card for your son with higher grades, please call . . .
While the concept of changing students' grades to maintain their confidence is presented with good intentions, many people are outraged that an institution would offer this option. The school has yet to make a statement.

2 Paramedics Share the Biggest Car-Seat Safety Mistake All Parents Should Know About
Between Krystal Kleidon and her husband, they have 20 years of roadside experience as paramedics. During this time, they've seen every type of car accident imaginable, and as they prepare to move their 4-year-old into a new car seat, they wanted to share the most important thing about car-seat safety that they've learned from their eye-opening experience.
"I'm a member of a lot of mothers groups and communities and the discussion around car seats is ALWAYS a heated one," Krystal shared on her Facebook page, Project Hot Mess. "People give their opinions on rear facing vs forward facing, side seat vs middle seat, chest clip height, straps, wearing jumpers . . . if there's something to have an opinion on, it has been discussed before."
The Devastating Difference Between Car Seats That Left 1 Girl Unharmed and Her Sister Almost Dead
However, none of that is what made a difference for the "mangled" car seats that Krystal and her husband have come across after devastating accidents. "While we know the science and research backs up our opinions, that's not what we are sharing here," she wrote. "We wanted to share what we have seen and experienced in our job."
Krystal explained that she knows firsthand that when you find out that you're going to be a parent, how you spend countless hours researching "the best" car seat for your child, but none of what you read is what matters most:
You look for safety features, star ratings, and reviews and fret over if you can afford the best. But, it doesn't matter how much money you spend on a car seat if you DON'T strap your child in.
Between my husband and I, in our 20 years experience, we have NOT seen a single child harmed in a car accident where the child was restrained in their seat properly. Not a single one.
We've seen car seats ejected from vehicles, we've seen cars that have rolled over so many times you can barely tell which way is up, we've seen accidents where you would be certain there would be no survivors.
But in our experience, the biggest difference between a child's safety hasn't been if they were in the $600 car seat or the $200 one. It's been about those straps.
The next time you put your child in his or her car seat, Krystal wants you to consider how tight you're making the straps or if they are loose enough to pull their own arm out, or if your child is wearing a puffy jacket that's keeping him or her from being properly restrained. "Would you be confident in doing THIS to them? Would you be confident in turning your child upside down in their seat?" she captioned the photo of her flipped child. "Car seats have incredible safety designs now, they are designed to cocoon your child, protect them as they roll and are thrown around in an accident. But they can only do this if your child is restrained properly."
So before closing the door after buckling your little one into his or her car seat, Krystal hopes you ask yourself a question each and every time: "Would I be confident in turning them upside down in their seat right now?"

Gordon Ramsay's Transformative Way to Scramble Eggs
Yes, there are a million different scrambled eggs techniques out there, but Gordon Ramsay's will be your full-stop method. While at a press event to promote his new game with Glu Mobile, I asked chef Ramsay to go through the proper way to scramble eggs. His unique method has a heartwarming tale:
"After training in London, I wanted to become French, so I went to the birthplace of all cuisine. I remember seeing this amazing dish with scrambled eggs and sea urchin. I tasted the sea urchin through the scrambled eggs . . . and they topped it with caviar. I thought it was wild. I had never put sea urchin in scrambled eggs. The texture was just incredible. It made it so much creamier. What was more accessible to the average person at home making scrambled eggs - I knew that was crème fraiche. I perfected that craft in France making scrambled eggs to order, standing in Guy Savoy's restaurant behind the line as a 22-year-old."
But crème fraiche isn't the only thing that makes these scrambled eggs different from the rest. It's cooked in a pot! The eggs aren't seasoned from the start! Most of the cooking is done off the flame! Are you baffled yet? Me too, which is why I had to try the method out for myself. So where to begin? Start by watching Gordon's YouTube video. He shared a hilarious story about it:
I think there's about 15 million people online who have [watched] that scrambled eggs video. And it transforms the way you eat eggs. Incredible. It's a kind of rich, sumptuous way to eat scrambled eggs even for dinner, even with all the steps. It's just delicious on sourdough bread. My video, with 15 million downloads on YouTube, I burn the f*cking toast. I'm not so far down my backside. I make mistakes. I just start again. It's funny. I'm so into my scrambled eggs, focusing away. Fire alarm is going off and I burn my toast."
Like Gordon, my first attempt didn't go off hitch-free. I'm unfortunately going to need a few more practices to end up with perfectly custardy, voluminous eggs like Gordon, but what I did make was truly exceptional and unlike any scrambled eggs I've ever had before. I can't wait to keep on practicing, and neither will you once you've memorized the steps.
