Good Bones: Here's Where Your Favorite HGTV Show Is Filmed
If you're anything like us, you've been hooked on HGTV for as long as you can remember - did you know the home improvement channel is actually over 20 years old? And it just keeps adding bigger and better shows to inspire viewers in their own home and garden quests. Good Bones is one of the most recent additions to the network, having premiered in March 2016.
It features a mother-daughter team of Mina Starsiak, a real-estate agent, and her daughter Karen Laine, who used to be an attorney. But a few years ago they decided to start rehabbing their hometown one dilapidated house at a time. But do you know what their hometown is? It is none other than Indianapolis, IN.
Good Bones is unique because a lot of HGTV shows are set in bigger cities or even another country. The Flip or Flop franchise started in Los Angeles and has now expanded to Atlanta and Las Vegas; Property Brothers and Love It or List It are both Canadian shows, though they have both expanded to a couple of U.S. areas.
But Good Bones is a homegrown show from America's heartland. Its popularity likely helped spawn HGTV's new show Home Town, which follows married couple Ben and Erin Napier as they renovate houses in their hometown of Laurel, MS.
Good Bones, which is currently airing its second season, was recently renewed by HGTV for a 13-episode third season, set to air in 2018.
"Mina and Karen's incredible home renovation skills, as well as their expanding popularity with the HGTV audience, are just two of the many reasons to keep this hit going for another season," said HGTV senior VP John Feld in a statement. "Nothing says success like a good mid-season renewal."
Everwood: The Emotional 15th Anniversary Reunion Will Take You Back
The cast of Everwood reunited at The CW's 2017 TCA Summer press tour day on Aug. 2 to reminisce about the beloved family show. In attendance were cocreators Greg Berlanti and Rina Mimoun, plus stars Tom Amandes, Justin Baldoni, John Beasley, Vivien Cardone, Debra Mooney, Stephanie Niznik, Gregory Smith, Emily VanCamp, and Treat Williams. Chris Pratt, who also starred on the show, unfortunately could not be in attendance at the reunion.
It was an emotional reunion, with multiple cast members, plus Berlanti, getting choked up when speaking about how much the WB series meant to them all. If you never watched Everwood or you just want to revisit the family drama, all the episodes are now available on the CW Seed streaming platform.
Lobke's 75-Pound Weight-Loss Secrets: Weight Watchers and Fitbit
After her "aha!" moment, Lobke Meulemeester from the UK realized she had to change her habits to live a healthier life. Starting at 233 pounds, she's used Weight Watchers and Fitbit to lose 75 - but she still lives a life of balance, sharing that even now she has days where she doesn't go to the gym and gets takeout ("takeaway," in UK terms!) instead. And while she always gets her steps in, she has a little chocolate every day.
Lobke: Before
POPSUGAR: What made you decide to start your weight-loss journey?
Lobke Meulemeester: I came to a point in my life where doing simple tasks like walking became difficult. Walking short distances gave me a backache; I got short of breath. I was borderline diabetic. I knew things had to change if I wanted to prolong my life. But it wasn't only physical - my mental state was also suffering. I had no confidence in myself and didn't care anymore. I didn't care what I looked like or what I wore.
I have always been a little overweight as a kid, even though I was quite active. And this continued through adulthood but escalated after my mother suddenly died back in October 2013. Dieting and losing weight got put back and I wasn't on my mind at all.
PS: Was there one program or method that you used?
LM: I had used Weight Watchers before so I thought I'd give it another go. I followed the program, combined with exercise and daily hour-long walks while being on lunch break at work. I got myself a Fitbit and tracked my daily steps. I enjoyed doing the challenges with people all over the world and it got me walking in all sorts of weather. Before Weight Watchers, I had tried a few different weight-loss programs like SlimFast, calorie-counting, and shakes. I had lost weight but always ended up regaining after going back to normal foods.
"I feel so much better and more alive."
PS: What's your favorite way to work out?
LM: I love to go to classes. I find it more fun than just using the cardio machines, although I do plow through it sometimes as I know that's what works for me.
PS: What's your weekly exercise schedule?
LM: It depends. I try and go to the gym three times a week but I never set myself a target or set days; I go when I feel like it. Sometimes I have days where I can't face it and go home and have takeaway instead. It's all about balance!
Lobke: After
PS: How do you keep workouts exciting?
LM: I try and switch it up as much as I can. I go to different classes and do a day of HIIT cardio in between.
PS: What was the first big difference, other than the number on the scale, that really made you feel proud and excited?
LM: It was the confidence I gained while losing weight. Not only did I feel so much better and more alive, but I also started to love how I looked as a result. My skin was glowing, I was smiling more, and I started enjoying clothes shopping again.
PS: How do you track your weight loss?
LM: I use the Weight Watchers app but I also have a sheet I made in my kitchen at the moment where I track the days until I go on holiday which I cross off every day so I can keep motivated and on track until then. It's good to have goals to work toward.
PS: What's a typical day of meals and snacks?
LM: I start my day with a good, filling protein breakfast that will keep me going until 11-ish. Lunch would also be a sandwich with a good amount of protein like chicken. I make sure I have plenty of fruit with me to snack on during the day, and I also make sure I have a little treat in the afternoon with a cup of coffee to keep me going. Being Belgian, that's mostly chocolate!
PS: Do you count calories? What's the range of calories you eat per day?
LM: No. I have tried using the MyFitnessPal app before and it's just not for me. I want something that's easy and doesn't require me to weigh everything I eat.
Lobke: Before and After
PS: What are the healthy staples that are always in your fridge?
LM: You will always find yogurts, pineapple, almond milk, eggs, precooked chicken, and gherkins [pickles] in my fridge.
PS: How do you strategize for meals out?
LM: I always have one day where I have a treat meal and dessert. I always choose what I want as I think it's important to listen to your cravings. I have learned from experience it doesn't end well if you ignore them. So one day, I will have something I've fancied all week and a nice dessert to follow, that way I feel refreshed for the week ahead.
"I've skipped the gym many times for takeaway and treats instead. It's life. Take one day at a time. Every day is a fresh start."
PS: How did the Fitbit help you on your journey?
LM: I got myself a Fitbit when I first started my fitness journey. It helped me get more steps in on a regular basis as I have an office job and it's actually astonishing to see how little steps you do in a day. So I started taking two 10-minute breaks and walk around the car park, as well as walking on my one-hour lunch every single day. On top of that, I would go to the gym three times a week. I did challenges with people all over the world and it can get quite competitive. Sometimes I ended up walking in the rain just so I could win the workweek hustle!
PS: What advice do you have for anyone starting out on a weight-loss journey?
LM: Don't expect it to happen overnight. This will be a long process but one that will be totally worth it. It will become easier once you are a few weeks in. Don't get upset when you are having an off day; we all get those. I've skipped the gym many times for takeaway and treats instead. It's life. Take one day at a time. Every day is a fresh start. Just never stop, never give up. You will get there, one day at a time.
90 Songs You Need to Listen to Before Going to Lollapalooza This Year
Lollapalooza has come a long way. The music festival began as a nationwide tour in the early '90s for bands like Jane's Addiction and Nine Inch Nails and has managed to morph into one of the most popular annual celebrations of music in the world. This year's lineup is a perfect example of that, featuring an eclectic mix of big names from every genre (Muse, Lorde, Chance the Rapper, Migos, blink-182, The Killers, and Arcade Fire are just the tip of the iceberg, to be honest).
To get you ready for Lolla, which kicks off in Chicago's Grant Park this year on August 3, we've taken the liberty of arranging the perfect pump-up playlist, featuring hits from nearly every act performing at the festival this year.
This Guy Purchased a House For $500 and Revealed the Most Shocking Facts About It
We're all about a good project, but our favorite DIY activities are nothing compared to the project that this guy took on. After purchasing an abandoned home in Detroit for $500 in October 2009, Drew Philp is stepping away from the power tools and answering all of our questions. Drew is a journalist and screenwriter, and he even wrote a book about his experience with the home titled A $500 House in Detroit. After fixing up the home with his own hands (except for one part - the roof), Drew has revealed tons of details about his work in a Reddit AMA, and we're blown away. During the "ask me anything" conversation, Drew explained what you never realized about water, taxes, and trees. Read on for some of Drew's most interesting facts about purchasing a home for $500 in a city where the rent has soared since he made the purchase in 2009.
He paid no taxes on the home when he first purchased it.
When a Reddit user asked Drew about how much he's paid in taxes since purchasing the home, he had one of the most surprising responses. "I pay relatively little in taxes compared to some of my neighbors, but the mayor is working on trying to get them lowered, as they're artificially high throughout the city," Drew shared. "I also pay income tax, twice, both because I live and work in the city."
But when purchasing the house, Drew didn't have to pay any back taxes, which typically racks up the total price for cheap real estate in Detroit. "Because it had been abandoned for more than a decade before I bought it, I was able to purchase the house at the base price they sell them for in the county auction - $500, so I didn't have to pay any of the taxes," he said.
The water bills are shockingly expensive.
With Detroit being so close to a fresh water resource, Drew explained how shocked he was by the expensive water bills, explaining that it's not the income tax that is so bad, but the water bill. "It's the water bills are the killer," he said. "They're about twice the national average, which is ironic AF considering we literally live directly on the planet's largest source of freshwater. Those are going up drastically."
The neighbors do a lot of the tree trimming.
The same user asked about the types of services the City of Detroit offered, such as trash collection and snow plowing. "They've started plowing the roads this year (they didn't before and it was a nightmare - 4WD was a must) and now I have streetlights which is good. Obviously, these are basic city services and it's great we have them now, but I guess it's good only in comparison to what came before. But part of the allure to the neighborhood for me, is that we - and by we I mean the neighbors and community - do a lot of the work ourselves, like tree trimming. I feel like it gives me more agency in my neighborhood and life, and makes it easier to have a say and stake in where I live. I find it unconscionable though, that they would shut off water to that many people."
Check out Drew's photos from before his renovations below.

Why Breastfeeding Moms Will Be Spending Even More of Their Money at Target
It's hard to find a person who dislikes Target. From endless aisles of affordable essentials to fashion collaborations that let anyone with $20 to spare own designer clothes (that is, if they're willing to wait in line for a good four hours before the store opens), it's the definition of one-stop shopping at its best. So, when we heard that a blurry photo from the pages of Target's employee handbook had gone viral, and that the image outlined its internal policy on breastfeeding, we were nervous we'd see a darker side of our beloved retailer.
Nope! The photo - which was first posted on the Mama's Milkies Facebook page before making its way to the Breastfeeding Mama Talk Facebook group - proved once and for all how amazing Target is to its customers, those nursing in particular. Not only does the company, in bold print no less, support the act, but it clearly encourages moms to nurse wherever they feel comfortable, even if it's in a fitting room with a line down the aisle.
The image has been shared nearly 15,000 times, and with good reason. Here are just a few of our favorite comments about women's love affair with Target:
I've worked for Target 2 years and hadn't seen this! I break policy every time I see a nursing mama! I always approach her and ask if she'd like some water as that's all I want when I'm nursing! - Amanda Busch
This is why I love Target!!! About a month ago I was nursing my daughter and a customer went and got a manager, brought them to where I was nursing( in the men's section with my husband, covered up) and complained. The manager apologized to me and explained to the LADY that I was allowed to feed my baby where ever I am comfortable doing so. And proceeded to explain to the lady that if she didn't like it, don't watch. - Laci Crawford
Good work to them for getting it right and training their staff properly on this especially love "do not offer the restroom as an option"...so many other places have been guilty of this!! - Hazel Ip
I LOVE Target and have nursed there many times! Here's one of the many times. - Daphney Biddle Long
Now that's a happy customer!
42 Things That Bran Could've Talked to Sansa About Instead of . . . That
The following contains spoilers for Game of Thrones season seven.
One of the most anticipated reunions on Game of Thrones finally came to fruition in season seven's third episode. However, the special moment between Sansa Stark and her long-lost brother, Bran, quickly soured in viewers' eyes for several reasons, not the least of which was the way Bran behaves upon finally seeing Sansa for the first time in years. Suddenly taking on an affectation of blankness that he hasn't displayed at all thus far, Bran can't even be bother to return Sansa's emotional embrace.
You know . . . this whole "emotionless robot" situation.
Anyway, the most bizarre part about the Stark siblings' reunion at Winterfell is their conversation beneath the family weirwood tree. Presumably in an effort to prove his greenseer powers to Sansa, unfeeling drone Bran decides to describe a memorable evening that he was not present for. Specifically, the most traumatic night of Sansa's life, when she is married to and subsequently raped by the sadistic Ramsay Bolton.
Bran could choose any memory to prove his abilities, but intentionally focuses on Sansa's most traumatic life experience.
Aside from the creepy factor of Bran implicitly letting Sansa know that he has "watched" her while she is repeatedly sexually abused, he adds another unsettling element by blankly complimenting how beautiful his sister looked on her wedding night. Not to mention the unnecessary cruelty of reopening the wounds inflicted by the Boltons, which Sansa is just beginning to put behind her. Bran could choose any memory to prove his abilities - their crazy aunt Lysa Arryn getting pushed out the "Moon Door" at the Eyrie, how Joffrey looked when he was dying, or one of Sansa's conversations with Littlefinger - but intentionally focuses on her most traumatic life experience.
We've taken the liberty of choosing several things that Bran could have - and SHOULD have - spoken to Sansa about instead. Hopefully by the time Arya returns to Winterfell, he'll have gained back some of his social skills and takes a hint from this list.
42 Things Bran SHOULD Have Talked to Sansa About
- "Hey! Did you realize that Jon is actually our cousin and that mom treated him like garbage for no reason?"
- "Yeah, long story, but Dad isn't actually his dad."
- "Aunt Lyanna is his mom, and it turns out that he's actually Rhaegar Targaryen's son!"
- "So that blonde wannabe queen that he's talking to right now is actually his aunt. Crazy, right?"
- "PS, you could cut the sexual tension in the throne room at Dragonstone with a knife right now. Still not as weird as Jaime and Cersei, though."
- "Jaime is the one who pushed me out of that tower, by the way. It's because I caught him boning his twin sister."
- "Returning to the topic of Mom, want to hear about how she literally grabbed a knife with her bare hands when somebody sent an assassin to kill me back when I was comatose?"
- "Oh yeah, SOMEONE SENT AN ASSASSIN TO KILL ME."
- "By the way, there's this cool thing that Arya does now where she literally slices the faces off of dead people and wears them as masks."
- "She's alive, BTW, and she's like two days away."
- "Just a warning, if you call her Arya, she might have a cryptic response like 'a girl has no name' or something. It's a long story."
- "Oh, and her direwolf is alive and in the Riverlands right now!"
- "Speaking of direwolves, you know what happened to Summer? RIP, old friend."
- "And you don't even want to hear about what they did to Robb's wolf."
- "It's OK though, Arya toooooootally f*cked up the people responsible for that. Her revenge for the Red Wedding was sick, dude."
- "She legit fed Walder Frey his own kids in pie form."
- ". . . Do you think we need a family therapist?"
- "On the topic of therapy, you should stop talking to Littlefinger. He's straight-up the reason that dad's dead right now."
- "Oh my god, alsooooo . . . Dad didn't defeat Ser Arthur Dayne at the Tower of Joy. Meera's dad came up behind him and stabbed his neck; it was gnarly."
- "Meera used to have a brother, by the way. I watched that dude die Beyond the Wall."
- "You know who else I watched die? Hodor."
- "About that whole Hodor thing, by the way . . . totally my bad, I definitely screwed with his brain."
- "On the bright side, I learned that I can control people's bodies with my warg powers."
- "I could also transition my consciousness to Summer, which was tight. I make a good wolf, big sis."
- "Long story short, 'Hodor' is Hodor-speak for 'hold the door.' Again, totally my bad."
- "Holy crap, I just remembered! Have you heard from Uncle Benjen lately?"
- " . . . cuz I have, and he's like, super dead. But also alive. Ya know what? It's complicated."
- "So about this whole Great War thing - we need to make it our priority."
- "I've seen you and Jon arguing about it in front of the entire audience chamber, and guys . . . not a good look. Next time, hash it out in private!"
- "But seriously, the Night's King is on his way, and since he's already touched me he will probably be here sooner than we all think."
- "Also, in case you've been wondering about how Theon is faring - and seriously, screw that guy for how he treated me and Rickon - he's gone off the deep end. Literally."
- "He and his sister were on this boat fighting for Jon's aunt Daenerys, and he just flipped a switch and jumped overboard."
- "It was pretty scary and sad, but also . . . f*ck that guy. He pretended to burn me and Rickon alive."
- "Glad he helped you escape that sadistic bastard Ramsay, though. Guess I'll give him props for that."
- "Sorry about everything that happened to you, but that's as far as I'm going to go with this topic of conversation."
- "Oh, about Rickon - whatever happened to him? I forgot to check in on him during my many mental voyages across time and space, because I (like everyone else) kinda just forgot he existed."
- "Ohhhhhh, he died? That's . . . unfortunate."
- "Welp, anyway! Do you mind having the staff move all of my stuff into this tree?"
- "Oh yeah, no need to prepare chambers for me. I'm gonna be living here."
- " . . . among the roots, duh sis. I'm the Three-Eyed Raven now, which means I basically have to plug my brain into this tree Avatar-style."
- "Ugh, I knew I shouldn't have mentioned this. Can you just send me another manservant to carry me around and do my bidding? I accidentally got the last one torn apart by frozen zombies."
- "Thanks, sis. See you at dinner!"
The Top 4 Workouts to Avoid If You're Trying to Lose Weight
We encourage all types of fitness, for more reasons than just weight loss. While weight loss is an awesome side effect of working out and living a healthier lifestyle, exercise can benefit your brain, your mood, your sleep, and your overall health, too!
However, if you're focusing on dropping pounds, are there types of exercises you should flat-out avoid? We asked certified personal trainer John Rowley - International Sports Science Association (ISSA) director of wellness and founder of UX3 Nutrition - for his opinion on the matter. While we still encourage anyone to give these workouts a shot (in fact, we love all of them!), these four may not give you the results you're looking for if weight loss is your top priority.
- CrossFit: "CrossFit is number one on the hit list," Rowley said in an email. "The risk-to-results ratio just isn't there." If you're just beginning your weight-loss journey, you likely won't have the strength to get an effective workout without injuring yourself. "It's very popular, and I can see how fun and challenging it is," he noted. "But the way the exercises are done is very dangerous, especially for someone not in tiptop shape."
- Yoga: Rowley explained that yoga "has a lot of benefits, but losing weight is not one of them." Although you'll gain strength and tone up, if you're aiming to shed pounds, "you want to work as much of your body as possible to lose weight and to stimulate your metabolism," and Rowley said yoga is not the most effective way to do so.
- Indoor Cycling: While indoor cycling classes are great for exercise veterans, Rowley said, "they can get out of control as well," and the format of the classes can put you at risk for injury. "The rooms can get too hot, the movements can be too aggressive for some, and any vigorous exercise will make you hungry." More on that hunger in the next point . . .
- Cardio-Only Routines: Rowley said these should be avoided if your only goal is weight loss. Why? The munchies. "Cardio will help burn calories but can often make you hungry, leading to excessive calorie-consuming after workouts," putting you at a higher risk for undoing your progress. Additionally, if you're only doing cardio and not balancing with strength training, it can lead to muscle loss. "The loss of muscle destroys your metabolism; if you are going to do cardio, do it in conjunction with a well thought-out weight training workout."
Again, we love (and do) each of these workouts - and you absolutely can lose weight doing any of them. But if your number one goal is weight loss, Rowley warned, you might want to reprioritize your workout schedule.
So what should you do? "The only way for lasting, healthy weight loss that will change your body composition is through resistance training," Rowley said. "Lifting weights stimulates your muscles; your muscles burn calories even when you are eating and resting." We encourage you to be open to all types of workouts - get comfortable with movement of all types! But start with a good, healthy balance of strength training (as recommended by this trainer) and a bit of cardio to help build up your endurance so you can keep shedding pounds and crush your goals.

If This Game of Thrones Theory Proves Correct, Ned Stark Could Still Be Alive
When I was talking to a friend about excitement over this season of Game of Thrones, he mentioned, "I can't wait to see Ned Stark again." It was at this point in the conversation I half-stopped listening (because WTF was he even talking about) and simultaneously tuned right in (because, I mean, I love Ned and miss him, obviously). "I'm sorry, what?" was my actual response, because as we all know, Ned was publicly beheaded, and ain't nobody got the power to avoid such a gruesome death.
Or do they?
With so many theories about whose parents are whose (looking at you, Jon Snow and Tyrion) and who's going to be offed this coming season (Cersei? Finally? Maybe?), I was intrigued about this one speculation that someone on this show filled with so much death could actually still be alive. The theory is a bit confusing, I admit, but as it goes, Ned Stark could still be alive and kicking if we take a peek at some possibly overlooked details.
Background From the Book You Need to Know
Unlike in the show, Ned's death in the book is a little ambiguous. His death is told from Arya's point of view, and she claims that her dad looks different after his confrontation with Jaime. Sansa later comments on her father's head up on the post and mentions it doesn't really look like Ned (this also occurs in the show).
So whereas things seem pretty black and white on screen - it is most definitely Ned/Sean Bean who is brought outside to be executed - it seems that in the book it could be a question as to whether or not it's really him.
Another thing to mention is that on screen it's implied that Syrio Forel, Arya's trainer, is left to die as Arya runs away. But the dude had just taken on a bunch of guards with a wooden sword, so he definitely could have survived his encounter with Ser Meryn. But why do we never see him again if that's so?
Well, from here, there are two possible theories that could be at play:
The First Theory
As my friend explains it, the first theory he's heard - from a pretty long-winded YouTube video - is that Syrio is Jaqen H'ghar and Jaqen is Ned.
Let me back up.
This theory suggests that the man who is beheaded is not Ned, but Jaqen with Ned's face.
Although it's been mentioned that the Faceless Men can only change faces with someone who's dead, which would make it impossible for Jaqen to use Ned's face to replace him at his execution, that fact contradicts itself at the end of season five, when Arya pulls faces off Jaqen and reveals her own face. Seeing as she's sitting right there, very much alive, we can possibly assume that there are exceptions to this "dead people only" rule.
So, it can be argued that when Ned is thrown in the cells beneath the Red Keep before his death, he could have come across Jaqen, who is also imprisoned in these cells. However, it's weird that Jaqen managed to get himself arrested, because a Faceless Man, aka a badass assassin, probably wouldn't ever wind up in jail by accident. The theory states that Jaqen could have been paid off to get himself arrested in order to be down in the cells with Ned, which could have very well been organized by the ever-connected Lord Varys, who visits Ned before his execution.
This is where Syrio comes in - the fact that Syrio is assumed to have died is a little far-fetched as he's such a talented sword fighter. Wanting to help Ned in order to help Arya, whom he cared for, he could have gotten away from Ser Meryn and gone down into the cells to release Ned, wearing Jaqen's face (after he was executed in Ned's place). Whether he decided to do this on his own or it was arranged by Varys as well, it would explain a lot about Jaqen and Arya's relationship, mainly why Jaqen says to Arya, "There is only one God, and A Girl knows his name," which connects with Syrio telling Aria during their training, "There is only one God and his name is Death."
The Second Theory
As Ned is about to say adios to his head, he begins muttering to himself and closes his eyes kind of in the same way Bran does when he's warging. Because it's believed that his other children can warg as well and take on the forms of their direwolves, it's possible this magical skill is genetic, passed down from Ned himself.
Upon watching the clip below, you can see exactly what I'm talking about at the 4:26 mark when he lowers his head, closes his eyes, and mutters to himself, and then Arya, who was protected from witnessing the beheading, sees birds flying above her. This theory suggests that maybe Ned warged into one of those birds.
Why Ned would want to warg into a bird and essentially be stuck like that with his human body no longer a form he could take on, I'm unsure. But I suppose it could be possible. And according to the book, if Ned was a warg, he would become the animal he typically warged into - which could be a bird.
(And if the first theory is true, it is believed that Ned/Jaqen could have been muttering, "All men must die.")
Of course most people would want to believe that Ned is still alive; however, though some of this is pretty convincing, it seems unlikely to me due to Ned's character that he's still kicking. If he were still around, how could he just watch as his sons and wife were slain and his other children each suffered in their own ways? He could have his reasons, but we'll only find those out if one of these theories does prove to be true.
Stay tuned, y'all.
Meet the Badass Female Judge Who Just Stopped 4 Dangerous Antiabortion Laws
Just before midnight on July 28, US District Court Judge Kristine Baker took a major step toward protecting the right to choose in Arkansas. The state first made headlines in June after lawmakers greenlit a set of incredibly draconian laws aimed at deterring or preventing women from getting abortions. Together, these four restrictions targeted all aspects of the right to choose, from requiring a woman to inform the man who impregnated her if she chose to abort to blocking the most common abortion procedure to instituting new, cumbersome rules around the disposal of fetuses. The state went to great lengths to make sure that the rules would not only make it difficult to acquire a legal abortion, but also make it difficult on the emotional side of things as well. The ACLU went so far as to call the measures "invasive, medically unnecessary, burdensome hurdles that do nothing to advance women's health and are tantamount to outright abortion bans for many women" and went on to challenge the Arkansas legislature in court.
Three of the four laws were set to go into place on Aug. 1, regardless of the outstanding motions against them. But just four days before they were set to take effect, Judge Baker succeeded where others had not been able to in the weeks prior: she filed an emergency injunction, successfully barring the state from moving ahead with implementation.
"The Court is not convinced that importing the (disposal law's) complex requirements for authorization advances a public health goal," Baker wrote in her ruling. "These requirements also do not advance interests in women's health because delay and other negative effects instead threaten women's health and wellbeing." In other words: there's an appalling lack of humanity in making a victim of sexual assault confront her assailant in order to essentially secure permission for an abortion or to require a woman to disclose all past pregnancy history to a doctor after opting for an abortion. There's just no world in which that's not an attempt to criminalize the act. But thanks to Kristine Baker, women are now free from such condescending, potentially dangerous legislation - at least for the time being.
The battle isn't over quite yet, of course. There will likely be a fierce court battle bolstered, and lawmakers in the state are already devising new legislation, such as limitation on how abortion pills can be administered. In fact, that new proposal began making the rounds just hours before Baker was able to stop the previous four laws from taking hold. But it's important to recognize a victory for what it is: a victory. "Arkansas women can feel a little relief today, knowing that these laws are blocked from taking effect," the executive director of the ACLU said in a statement. And here's hoping that there are more individuals like Kristine Baker out there, ready to champion the rights that we deserve in our day-to-day lives.
Remembering Sam Shepard and Jessica Lange's 30-Year Hollywood Love Story
Sam Shepard died at age 73 this week, and in addition to an incredible Hollywood legacy, the actor also left behind his three children: Jesse, 47, from his marriage to O-Lan Jones; and Hannah, 31, and Samuel, 30, from his longtime relationship with Jessica Lange. While Jessica and Sam never got married, their romance was one of Hollywood's longest-lasting love stories. The pair first met on the set of Frances in 1982 and started dating shortly after. They went on to have two children before splitting in 2009.
Even after they parted ways, they weren't shy about opening up to the media. In 2010, Sam talked about their "tumultuous" relationship, and Jessica mentioned her ex during an interview with AARP magazine shortly before his death. "I wouldn't call Sammy easygoing and funny," she told the publication. "But everybody has their dark side, and he always does it with a sense of humor." As we mourn the loss of the beloved actor, look back at his sweetest moments with Jessica over the years.

NASA Responds to 9-Year-Old Who Applied to Become the "Guardian of the Galaxy"
It's probably every fourth grader's dream to work for NASA, but 9-year-old Jack took his aspirations a step further when he wrote the space agency a letter explaining why he would be the best fit for "the planetary protection officer job." The self-proclaimed "Guardian of the Galaxy" pointed out that his sister already thinks he's an alien, and shared that he has watched all of the "space and alien movies" so he clearly knows his stuff. Luckily for Jack, his adorable letter was met with an epic response from NASA.
"We are always looking for bright future scientists and engineers to help us," NASA's director of Planetary Science wrote back, "so I hope you will study hard and do well in school. We hope to see you here at NASA one of these days!" Cue the awwws! Keep reading to see how the internet reacted to the heartwarming job application ahead.

Game of Thrones: Euron Greyjoy Is the Hilarious Assh*le We Kind of Love
First things first: Euron Greyjoy is a f*cking terrible person on Game of Thrones. Not only is he a psychotic murderer, but he seems to get off on betraying his family, torturing people, and doing anything to impress Cersei. But during the third episode of season seven, some of his best assh*le moments are also pretty LOL-worthy. In between taunting Jamie about his sexual relationship with his sister, he also calls Theon a "twat" for failing to save his sister Yara and instead jumping overboard during Euron's invasion of the Iron Fleet. His line delivery is hilarious, his facial expressions are gold, and his character is just an all-around amazing person to hate and appreciate at the same time.
"I have to be honest this is making me hard... what a twat" I really hate how much I like Euron 😛 http://pic.twitter.com/BMidG1KGT1

Here's What Happened After I Ran a 5K Every Morning For a Week
Summer in New York City can be downright rough. As if staring at your electric bill isn't depressing enough on its own (thank you, air conditioner), working out in the muggy afternoons is much less than ideal. Only a few weeks into the season, I noticed a pretty crappy byproduct of the season: my fitness routine was slipping. Warm mornings had made it tough to leave the comfort of my cool bedroom for a sunrise run. As someone who swears by early a.m. workouts, I saw my productivity slipping by the wayside as my lazy mornings became more frequent. Despite managing to get to midday Spin classes or even the occasional hot yoga situation, I still felt blob-ish.
I knew I needed to get my mojo back. So, I decided to commit to running every morning for a week. The rules: Hit a 5K first thing (after, of course, the whole wash my face, brush my teeth, put clothing on schtick). The pace didn't matter. All that mattered was that I would get up, get out, log the miles, and well, the rest of the day was mine to conquer.
A quick note on me and my running capabilities: I've run five marathons (I've also lost 70 pounds in the process). The last one was almost a year ago. Still, these daily 5Ks didn't come easy to me. There were days I hated it, and there were days I loved it. Days five and six, the temperatures were perfection - 60 degrees, sunny, and low humidity - making me fall in love with this city all over again with each step. Throughout the week, here are the four biggest lessons I learned running a 5K every morning for a week:
1. Preparation is everything.
Getting out the door at an early hour is a whole lot easier if you set yourself up for success. Before bed each night, I'd set aside a pair of shorts or tights, a sports bra, and a tank. Knowing exactly what I was going to put on gave me one less excuse to procrastinate before walking down the four flights of stairs from my apartment to the street. Plus, have you seen what happens when you try to put together a matching outfit pre-6 a.m.? No wonder why most New Yorkers only wear black.
2. The earlier, the better.
I despise humidity like I despised sophomore year statistics class in college. While sleep is amazing, there's no denying that beating the heat is 100-percent worth setting that alarm for an hour earlier. Maybe I'm just super sensitive, but I found that leaving after 6:30 meant it was harder for me to breathe. By setting a 5:45 a.m. alarm, I was able to get up, dressed, and my act together before hitting my stride by 6:10 a.m. This, for me, was ideal.
3. Partnering up can save your stride.
On day one of my 5Ks, I joined my boyfriend for a 10K. (He's an overachiever and after a glutenous date night, I felt like the jump-start could do me good.) I'll be the first to admit that I was in the front seat on the struggle bus. Last month, the man spontaneously decided to run 20 miles because "he was feeling great." So just envision this scene with me: it's mile two of our run, he's cruising along like a gazelle, and I stare in his general direction using puppy eyes asking him if we can take a pitstop so I can assault a water fountain.
Still, without him being there to push me past my comfort zone, I doubt I would have finished the miles that day. I became competitive, not just with him, but with myself. You've run marathons, I thought to myself. You can run a 10K. Although I didn't get to that desirable happy place on my run where you blink and suddenly it's done, I did check the box. After I felt appreciative to have had him to get me through. I also felt appreciative when he made coffee upon returning to the apartment.
4. When something becomes habit, it's easier to stick with.
When I started running back in 2007, I committed to logging the same distance every day, rain or shine. I didn't love those give-or-take 14-minute pavement dates, but after two Summer months of running daily, it had become routine. I started to look forward to taking that time for myself. Regardless of the snail-worthy pace, I felt like I had finally done something for myself. I felt accomplished.
This week of 5K running brought me back to that time. I found that by day eight (yes, I know that there are seven days in a week), I was still waking up to run 3.1 miles before going on with my day. Yes, I kept it going even AFTER I was "done." It took me one week to make this 5K morning situation habit. One week a 5Ks to find some inner peace and jump-start my fitness back to where I'm happiest. Maybe for you, it's not running. But perhaps you too can be surprised at what you're capable of when you set your mind to a goal - and execute.
1 Annoying Thing From the Jon/Daenerys Scene You Only Noticed If You're a Woman
One of the great feats of Game of Thrones is that for the hour every Sunday I spend watching each episode, I'm completely transported from reality and taken deep into the wild world of Westeros. When I was watching "The Queen's Justice," however, one scene felt all too real. Like, ripped-from-the-headlines, why-am-I-still-protesting-this-sh*t real.
It was the much-anticipated meeting of Jon Snow and Daenerys, and it went a little something like this:
Missandei: "You stand in the presence of Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen, rightful heir to the Iron Throne, rightful queen of the Andals and the First Men, protector of the Seven Kingdoms, the Mother of Dragons, the Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, the Unburnt, the Breaker of Chains."
Davos: "This is Jon Snow."
(Awkward silence . . .)
Davos: "He's King of the North."
The long-awaited scene garnered lots of chatter on social media, namely that the whole laundry list of Daenerys's titles is getting to be rather annoying, as is Daenerys herself, and about how refreshing it is that Jon Snow doesn't concern himself with accolades. He's the real deal.
Did no one else see what I saw?
Because I was watching the most obvious metaphor for sexism in the workplace, the most stereotypical man-versus-woman job interview in fake history.
Here's this orphan girl, who spent the better part of her life being subjugated by men, toiling endlessly to rise up and do some good along the way (ahem, she freed a bunch of slaves). She's now in a position of power, backed by a killer résumé. She's a working mom with three unruly toddlers, she's proud of her accomplishments, and she isn't about to be all modest about it.
And here's Jon Snow, a bastard with no birthright, yes, but a man who apparently needs no introduction just the same.
Sure, Daenerys spent a good deal of time on "bend-the-knee" semantics when there are justly some bigger undead fish to fry, but before everyone writes off Dany as just another bossy b*tch, consider the context.
Daenerys hasn't seen Jon Snow in action - she doesn't know what he's done or what he's gone through to get here, that he took a knife to the heart and straight-up died for his people. At this point, she's meeting yet another man who's probably planning to betray, rape, or murder her. ("So many men have tried to kill me, I don't remember all their names," she aptly puts it.) She has good reason to stand her ground and push for what she believes is justly hers.
Anyone who thinks she shouldn't needs to stop and ask themselves why.
I love Jon Snow as much as the next GOT fan, but before everyone starts lifting him up on their shoulders while piling mud atop Daenerys, remember that they both want the same thing, whether they admit it or not. They want to rule. Jon might seem above titles, but he certainly didn't seem willing to let his go.
Perhaps I read into this and the bitter realities of our male-dominated world had no place in that intimidating meeting room in Dragonstone, but I can't help but think that none of these eye-roll-emoji-filled tweets about Daenerys would be making the rounds if she weren't a woman.
17 Ways Disney World Isn't So Magical For Parents
So I just got back from another trip to Walt Disney World, and as far as my kids are concerned, it was the most magical trip of their little lives. They had a blast! But between you, me, and my husband, we're much happier to be back at the real happiest place on earth: home.
See, when you are a parent, you do Disney for your children - and it's rough. Sure, there are folks there without kids having a grand ol' time, but if you are there with your kids, you are there for your kids. Period. Don't get me wrong - the joy and excitement that my children get from a few days at Disney is worth all the eye rolls, stepped-on toes, and bickering that goes on behind the scenes as parents. But I'm in Disney hangover mode, which means I'm still at the point of vowing to never, ever go back again (which is what I said last year, by the way).
Here are a few less-than-magical parts of Disney World for us parents.
Once You See Beyoncé's Latest Snaps, It'll Be Hard to Focus on Anything but Her Cleavage
Beyoncé gave birth to twins Rumi and Sir Carter on June 13, and we've been seeing a lot more of her lately. Following her sushi date with husband JAY-Z on Wednesday night, Beyoncé shared a series of cleavage-baring snaps on her website on Friday. In one of the shots, Queen Bey is shown drinking a glass of red wine at what looks like a restaurant, but her low-cut dress really makes it hard to focus on anything but her assets. Along with the photo, Beyoncé also included a video montage of her selfies on Instagram for us to enjoy. We must say, Beyoncé is looking good these days, but then again, when has she ever not?

10 Ways Solo Travel Made Me More Confident
Solo travel is one of the most transformative experiences for the over-hustled soul. It's multisensory therapy that effectively grounds every person who dares to leave their significant other or best friends on the other side of the world. If you can't shake the deep-rooted feeling of lacking something in your life - whether that be fulfillment, happiness, or direction - these are the 10 ways solo travel squashed that and made me more confident and ready for life.
1. I Learned to Trust in All My Relationships
Trust issues often originate from the fear of something or someone being taken away from you. When you put thousands of miles between yourself and your most meaningful relationships, it's quickly discovered that they can survive abysmal WiFi connections, weeks without contact, and missed birthdays. Not only do the ones worth nurturing survive, but they often grow stronger with distance.
2. It Brought Perspective to Problems (Both Big and Small)
The anxieties that you feel in your day-to-day environment suddenly aren't monumental when you're standing next to a new ocean watching the waves crash against the shore. People who bring toxic energy to your life suddenly have no effect on you when you realize your emotional strength should be invested in making a child in an impoverished village feel full again. Making money doesn't seem as tricky when you witness a culture living in complete happiness despite the absence of it. Solo travel teaches you that your problems aren't always big, they're simply out of perspective.
3. Independence Has Nothing to Do With Relationship Status
Independence is a gift that we should maintain and demand respect for our entire life, as personal dreams (not only shared ones) are what keeps the world progressing. Whether you're single or married to the love of your life, the right relationship will foster an environment for personal growth and solo travel shouldn't be off the itinerary. Scheduling regular solo escapes to both new and beloved destinations should be a ritual and will give you the solo time you need to reconnect with your priorities.
4. A Diverse Social Circle Is the Strongest
Even if your idea of a good night is to curl up with a bowl of popcorn and a new episode of Game of Thrones (which I promise, you'll still want to do abroad), you will make friends and forge lifelong connections in places you never expected. Being able to connect with people across different cultural, socioeconomic, and geographical backgrounds will not only make you feel immeasurably more confident in your social skills, but will enrich your life in ways you never fathomed.
5. Out of Comfort Zone Is the Best Zone
Diving into a situation, experience, or destination that is beyond our comfort zone has the amazing ability to serve as an unapologetic reflection of our true characters. The strengths you possess while traveling solo will awe you. The flaws and prejudices you harbored without realizing will shock you and instantly ignite a flame for becoming a better version of yourself.
6. Beauty Can Be Found Everywhere
The experiences which involve the least amount of luxury transform our relationship with what we deem beautiful. I once stayed in a hotel on an island where power outages were more common than not. The first time my air conditioner gave out, I was so focused on how uncomfortable it was. When I slowed down my thoughts, however, I realized there was a heavenly ocean breeze rustling the palms outside. I opened my window, and it was the best night of sleep I ever had.
7. The World Is Big, and We Need to Be a Big Part of It
When you realize how vast the world is, you'll want to be a bigger part of it. Whether that means volunteering abroad and giving back to the global community or simply booking a one-way flight to Italy to live out your own Tuscan life, there is no guilt to be had when realizing you want to experience and give back to the world in a way that goes beyond your own backyard.
8. You Can Make It Everywhere, and It Doesn't Need to Involve a Desk Job
Once you see the world, you realize that life isn't quite as vibrant when it's tied to one place. In today's ever-so-increasingly remote workplace, skills and experience can easily be applied abroad. Millennials are masters of the side hustle and that trend isn't going anywhere. Be creative with how you make money and don't fall for the notion that professional dreams must be nurtured in a corporate atmosphere - entrepreneurship is a beautiful thing.
9. Self-Made Decisions Are the Best Decisions
Decisions are hard (especially when it comes to dinner), but when you have to choose between a dozens of different literal and figurative routes every day, you learn to trust your instincts. Even when your choices lead to a less-than-spectacular experience, trusting your gut is always the scenic route to building character.
10. You'll Discover What You Want to Give to the World (and What You Don't)
Traveling grounds you. It teaches you who you are and, if that's not the person you want to be, delivers you with a fire to make change. Experiencing your character in the backdrops of different global landscapes will ignite dreams and passions you never knew you had - and once your wanderlust takes over, you'll have the confidence to transform those discoveries into the life of your dreams.

When Hello Kitty and unicorn macarons meet, the result is just about the cutest freaking thing you could possibly imagine. While we admit the unicorn trend itself is a little tired at this point (unicorn pizza isn't exactly pizza), a Hello Kitty twist on anything instantly makes it worth your attention.
Based on our Instagram searches, it looks like Hello Kitty unicorn macarons originated from a blogger named Deer Daniels, who's a Norwegian nurse who also happens to be a seriously talented baker. In his blog post for the Hello Kitty unicorn macarons recipe, he writes, "OK, this unicorn thing has already had its peak but I want to share this recipe because this macaron with filling tastes just as scrumptious as it looks cute." And after reading through the recipe, we believe it.
Daniel's recipe calls for a saffron-infused caramel filling that not only looks pretty but has a depth of flavor uncommon in most macarons. To guide the piping of the kitty-shaped macaron, Daniel suggests making a template of Hello Kitty's face and piping inside the lines. Then, you make a miniature version of a unicorn horn with fondant and edible glitter.
As doable as the recipe is (with a little patience and craftiness, that is), we don't blame you if all you want to do is look at photos of this magical dessert instead of making it for yourself. Ahead, see even more ways people have created the glorious mashup of Hello Kitty, unicorns, and macarons. Not only will you suffer from a craving macarons, but you just might experience a severe overload of happiness.

Find Out How Much You Should Really Be Tipping at the Salon
Tipping is a custom that allows you to express appreciation for a job well done. But when it comes to salon, spa, and nail services, it can be hard to decide who and how much to tip - especially on a color job gone wrong. And while tipping is at your discretion, here are a few suggestions on amounts to give in a variety of circumstances. See the guidelines below.
Can You Spot the Kid Drowning in This Public Pool Before the Lifeguard Does?
A day at the pool isn't all fun and games - and no one knows that better than the lifeguard.
Drowning can happen in the blink of an eye and even when people are within arm's reach of the victim. As much as we think we might notice someone struggling in the water, drowning is often a silent killer.
Thankfully, in this real-life video taken at a public wave pool, a boy is spotted drowning within seconds by a resourceful lifeguard - likely well before anyone watching this footage, even knowing what to search for, could spot him.
The lifeguard sounds her whistle, swims out to the boy who lost hold of his floating ring, and carries him to safety.
One important factor to note is that this video includes sound, but you never hear the boy's cries for help. That's because when someone is drowning, contrary to what many assume, they can't call out - there isn't time to inhale or exhale. Often, they aren't able to wave their arms, which was a lucky ability for the child at this particular pool.
So can you find him?
The Internet Is Collectively Melting After Watching This Emotional Short Film
Break out the tissues, because this new animated short film will have you feeling all the feelings (yes, all of them). In a Heartbeat follows a young, closeted boy as he struggles to keep his crush on another classmate a secret. This becomes rather difficult when the boy's heart literally leaps out of his chest to chase after the guy of his dreams. Not only is the film being praised for its beautiful illustrations and animation, but also its powerful message about the LGBTQ+ community: the heart wants what it wants.
With so few representations of LGBTQ+ relationships in animation, people are raving about the movie's refreshing take on love. The film, which was originally produced by animators Beth David and Esteban Bravo for their senior thesis at Ringling College of Art and Design, has already received mass acclaim, including being officially selected for the 2017 Animation Shorts Film Festival and the 2017 LGBTQ Shorts Film Festival.
In the past 24 hours since being released on YouTube, the film has been viewed over 2 million times. It's clear that fans are in love, and the thousands of reactions on Twitter say it all:

Dior's Newest "Squeezable" Mascara Is Basically Falsies in a Tube
I am no stranger to Dior's iconic range of mascaras. After all, I consider myself a lash junkie, and the highly celebrated Diorshow formula has been a cult classic since 2002. But the brand's newest formula, Pump'N'Volume ($30), romanced me like no other in the company's mascara lineup . . . and I daresay it's the best one to date.
You see, this product has a completely genius tube that hasn't been seen before stateside. (Amore Pacific Korea won an award for this packaging in 2015.) It appears like your everyday Dior mascara at first glance, but it features a silicone tube that can be gently squeezed. This allows users to "pump" the formula into the molded brush, boosting volume in an already intensely voluminous formula. (The idea was actually inspired by makeup artists: many pros working on set warm makeup between - or on! - their hands to make the product smoother and easier to apply.)
Not only is the tube badass, the actual mascara is impossibly amazing. I am annoyingly picky about lash formulas and this one has earned itself a permanent place in my rotation. Diorshow fans already know that even the skimpiest of fringes can be transformed into a lush rainforest of lashes with the product, but this one is on another level. The brush grabs and coats every hair, defining them without clumping. The formula dries fully - unlike some brands that leave lashes feeling slightly sticky - but never makes your fringe feel stiff. This allows for lashes that are densely voluminous yet still fluttery, like a strip of falsies.
If you don't believe me yet, good news: I have photographic evidence that this mascara is the stuff of dreams. Keep reading for before and after shots, then grab your own tube.
