The Surprising Truth About Refrigerating Butter

One of the most heated debates in the kitchen is whether or not you should refrigerate butter. Some people cringe at the thought of leaving butter on the countertop, while others swear there's nothing worse than cold, hard butter straight from the fridge. It's an understandable question with an even more complicated answer. The short answer? It's OK to leave it out - with some restrictions.
While butter is a dairy product, it's mostly fat, meaning that it's less susceptible to bacteria. Salted butter is even less prone to bacterial growth than unsalted butter because of its sodium content, so the shelf life of the two types of butter is slightly different. When it comes to leaving butter out of the fridge, the first important rule is that it should be kept in a butter crock or a similar airtight container. If butter is exposed to air, it spoils much more quickly. When properly sealed in the container after each use, salted butter sitting out in a crock will last about two weeks, according to Organic Authority. If room temperature in your kitchen reaches above 70°F, however, it's best to refrigerate ASAP. But unsalted butter is best left in the fridge at all times.

If you need softened butter for baking but didn't give it a chance to reach room temperature, the trick is to grate the butter so it becomes soft

There's nothing I love more than getting the sh*t scared out of me. I'm a horror movie buff, I live for thrill rides and risky travel adventures, and most of all, I love horror houses and mazes, which is why my first experience with Halloween Horror Nights a few years ago was a dream (well, more like a nightmare) come true. Thankfully, every year brings a fresh new terror to the tradtional Universal Studios event, and 2017's Halloween Horror Nights promises scares that are nothing short of spine-tingling.

The events at the Hollywood and Orlando parks will also feature classic attractions like scare zones, fun shows, and more! The event begins at both parks on Sept. 15 and runs on select nights through Nov. 4. Here's what you can look forward to this year!

Ash vs. Evil Dead

First the first time ever, Halloween Horror Nights will feature a haunted maze inspired by the Starz TV show. The attraction will be at the Orlando and Hollywood parks and promises to "transport guests into the town of Elk Grove, Michigan, where they will encounter Deadites - people or objects possessed by evil demons - that have been unwittingly unleashed by Ash Williams - again." Throughout the maze, guests will come face to face with "disturbing characters and iconic comedic and gory scenes . . . as they desperately try to escape all things evil."

The Shining

The Shining maze is making a haunting debut at the Orlando and Hollywood parks this year, and guests will be able to "relive some of the film's most iconic, and sinister, moments." Brave souls will enter the Overlook Hotel and will be "thrust into the hotel's tragic history of murder and madness, bearing witness to caretaker Jack Torrance's spiraling descent into insanity." Evil entities be will around every corner, and guests must make it through the maze while trying to escape Jack Torrance as he "violently succumbs to the hotel's paranormal forces."

American Horror Story: Roanoke

An American Horror Story attraction is returns to both parks this year, promising more twisted horror for guests. The new house will feature brand new content from season two, Asylum, season three, Coven, and season six, Roanoke. Guests will "relive the horrific story of the Millers in Roanoke" where they'll be "at the mercy of Piggy, the grisly Polk family and the ghosts of the blood moon."

The Walking Dead Attraction

Universal Studios Hollywood has a new permanent attraction inspired by AMC's TV series The Walking Dead. Guests can immerse themselves in a world where the dead don't stay that way, full of creepy sounds, bloody sights, ominous music, and more.

29 of Selena Gomez's Sexiest Instagram Selfies

Calling Selena Gomez the queen of Instagram is no exaggeration. The "Bad Liar" singer is still sitting comfy on the throne with the most followers ever on the social media platform, and her many sultry and pouty selfies might have something to do with that.

We conducted a deep analysis of Selena's Instagram feed (taking a little detour through her makeup artist Hung Vanngo's account) and found that the star's selfies can be divided into three categories: the beauty look snap, where she shows off her hair and makeup before a big event (like the Met Gala, above); the moody photo, where she looks into the distance or fingermouths; and the smiley picture, where she shows off a moment with her boyfriend, The Weeknd. Keep reading to see all of her best selfies.

3 Reasons Kids Should Never Open Up Gifts During Their Birthday Party

Growing up, there was always one thing that made my birthday parties different from my friends'. Not the perfectly executed birthday cakes or the elaborate goodie bags (even though these details were always spot on!), but it was part of the party that was always missing: I never opened gifts during the celebration.

Although as a child I didn't understand why was this was my mom's biggest birthday rule, and as I got older it became a part of our party norm so I didn't give it much thought, as an adult I appreciate my mom's present-opening ban. Along with the other meaningful traditions from my childhood that I plan to pass on to my kids, I will also take a note out of my mom's birthday party playbook and won't be letting my children open their gifts at their parties.

Some people skip this part of the event for the sake of convenience (it can be time consuming and messy), but my mom had different reasoning for her stance on gift opening, and this meaningful position taught my siblings and I an important lesson. These are the three reasons kids should wait until after the party to start digging into the pile of gifts.

  1. It can make other kids feel bad. Birthday parties are supposed to be fun for everyone, not just the birthday kid, and opening gifts in front of everyone creates an opportunity for some guests to feel uncomfortable. There are countless reasons the gift situation could be tricky for other kiddos: whether their parents forgot their gift, couldn't afford to give one, gave less than someone else, opted out for cultural reasons, gave the same thing as someone else, gave something the child already has, or gave exactly what another child wanted, skipping this part of the party can help keep jealousy and discomfort away from the bash.
  2. It puts the focus on presents. A birthday party should be centered around spending time with friends and not just what you get out of it. Keeping the focus on making memories with guests and not on what they brought reinforces what your little one should prioritize. This will help keep them from zeroing in on what a guest brought from the time they walk in and comparing packages from different friends. Plus, once they start unwrapping things, it's hard to switch the focus back to the party and away from their new loot.
  3. It puts pressure on the kids. Although it's important for a child to learn how to graciously accept gifts, there are other ways to teach this without putting them on the spot in front of potentially dozens of people. Even if a child is perfectly polite, it's hard to hide the difference between genuine excitement and just good manners. This can make the kid with a "mediocre" gift feel bad while also putting pressure on your child to consistently have an even response and reining in pure joy over a major surprise. Also, if your child happened to be upset about a particular gift (hey, it happens), at least that reaction isn't seen by the other kiddos.

SNL Keeps Doing Trump Parodies Because "He's Never Stopped Being the Story"

Whether you love or hate seeing Saturday Night Live parody President Donald Trump and his administration, prepare to keep seeing it for as long as the White House continues to do joke-worthy stuff. A new cover story in The Hollywood Reporter features in-depth interviews with the cast - and a better idea as to why the sketch show continues to hammer the administration. Alec Baldwin, who's become a regular guest on the show with his Trump impression, even divulged what one Trump staff member actually thinks about the impersonation.

In the cover story published on May 15, the cast explained their laser focus on certain people from the Trump administration. Cast member Michael Che addressed why the parodies are both unavoidable and necessary. "But how do you ignore him? Trump has never stopped being the story," said Che. "I think there might have been two episodes where he didn't do anything absolutely batsh*t crazy [that week]." The cast also remarked that this isn't the first time the show has heavily focused on politics - only the stakes are different now since political issues completely dominate the news cycle.

Colin Jost knows that it can feel problematic to win ratings on what the administration is doing. "Whereas politics right now is probably the closest we've come to a full-blown national phenomenon as anything in a long time, and anytime people are paying more attention to politics, it's good for our show," he said. "But you almost feel like a war profiteer at times because we've benefited from a situation that's so tough." Baldwin also noted that he's now on the receiving end of negative feedback from Trump supporters. "You get this look and you can just feel the hatred," said Baldwin. "There were these two construction workers smoking a cigarette on Broadway, and as I walk by, they go: 'There he is, that f*cking assh*le, Alec Baldwin. Doesn't support our president. Don't fall in the hole over there, Alec.'"

But Baldwin's also heard some positive remarks about impersonating Trump - particularly from a cabinet member in the administration. "I'm not going to name names, but a cabinet member walked up to me at a restaurant in Manhattan - Manhattan, that's a hint - and he goes, 'I gotta tell you something. This thing you're doing is good, it's really good,'" said Baldwin. "He goes, 'I'll get fired if anybody quoted me saying this, but that's exactly what he's like when you do it.'"

Is it comforting or ridiculous knowing Baldwin's portrayal is almost true to life? We're not sure, but at the very least, we have four more years to see the SNL cast make fun of the administration.

I'm Not Reading Any of Those Game of Thrones Spoilers and You Can't Make Me

HBO has had quite a rough week. First, the network suffered a devastating hack that led to the theft of 1.5 terabytes of data and thousands of internal documents. Shortly thereafter, the new episode of Game of Thrones leaked online. The worst part is, the two are entirely unrelated. While the hack was initiated by a group of anonymous online troublemakers, the GOT leak happened because of Star India, a subsidiary of 21st Century Fox that received advance screeners of the episodes. Regardless of the reason for the leak, one thing's for sure: I'm staying so far away from anything related to it. I will not be watching the pirated episode. I will not be reading Reddit threads that spoil what happens. I will be waiting until 6 p.m. on Sunday night. And here's why.

One reason any Game of Thrones fan might want to spoil the episode for themselves is because they simply can't wait to find out what happens. Does Daenerys go off and unleash her dragons on King's Landing, as the preview suggests? Does Cersei stay winning and sipping that sweet, sweet wine? Do Sansa and Arya run at each other in slow motion and give us the reunion we've been dying for? Is Bran still being kind of a d*ck (no offense)?

I get it: some fans just want answers, and they want them now. In the end, though, there will still be more questions that won't be addressed until the next week, or the next leak! And even if the rest of the season gets spoiled online, we'll all have to wait quite a long time until the final season. It's a lot of rushing just to inevitably wait anyway. And also, it's like, do I want to find out what happens so badly that I'm willing to watch a grainy, poor-quality version of the episode to get my rocks off? No! First of all, that's illegal, guys. OK? Illegal. Also, I want full, high-definition, big-screen beauty. I can wait two days if it means Jon Snow's face won't look like a sad, blurry game of Tetris the whole time.

And I don't want to read about it either. Can you imagine how underwhelming some of the show's most iconic sequences must have been on paper? The Battle of the Bastards? Euron's brutal attack of the Iron Fleet? If I read it, I'll have to watch it on Sunday anyway. And as far as I'm concerned, it just lessens the impact of seeing it all go down live. If I know Daenerys is about to rip a castle in half while riding Drogon, it just won't give me as much satisfaction to watch it all go down.

As an alternative argument, one of my coworkers (not naming names) said they'd read the leak so they had control over whether or not it was spoiled for them. The logic was, "If I spoil it for myself, no one can spoil it for me." Which, like, so, that means you don't want to have it spoiled, but if it's going to be spoiled, you may as well spoil it for yourself? Nah, man. Nah. I will run that risk. I don't mind spoilers. Like, if it accidentally gets ruined for me by some internet troll, so be it. It happens. But I'm not about to do that to myself just to preemptively solve a problem that might not even be a problem.

If you want to read spoilers or watch leaked episodes, more power to you. I'm serious! That's your jam, and I get it. I want to know what happens just as bad. Do your thing. I'll see y'all on Sunday.

Bye.

Watch This Little Girl Absolutely Crush Her Dance Recital Routine to "Respect"

Johanna channeling Aretha Franklin!

Posted by Elissa M. Colón on Sunday, June 7, 2015

It's dance recital season - in my opinion, one of the best times of the year - and all over the country, young kids are performing their hearts out in front of their friends, family, and a huge audience of people they have never seen before. Recitals can be a little nerve-racking (I was the kid who froze up at recitals and forgot all her moves), but for someone with boundless confidence like Johanna, it's no big deal to get on that stage and crush it.

Johanna's recital song is "Respect," and man, does she channel Miss Aretha throughout her routine with a solid mixture of sass and spunk. She totally steals the show with her moves - we're talking full-body shimmies and hip pops - and makes the audience laugh at the end as she tries to get the attention of her two partners to let them know that it's time to bow and accept praise and applause for their amazing performance.

If this girl isn't famous in 10 years, we'll be shocked - stay tuned.

I'm a Huge Game of Thrones Fan, and I'm Confused as F*ck All the Time

Game of Thrones is one of the best shows on television. Not only is the writing superb, but the characters are intriguing, the setting is unusual, and the deaths just do. not. stop. While I consider myself to be a pretty big fan of the show, I also constantly find myself shutting down when other people talk about it. Everyone else seems to know every detail about every little thing, and I still struggle to keep the character names straight. Not only are the different houses flooded with incest and bastard children, but the layout of Westeros, the different alliances, and whatever is happening beyond The Wall is . . . a lot. Keep reading to see if you also fall into the "Confused Game of Thrones Fan" category, because I really hope I'm not the only one.

The Truth Behind Costco’s $5 Rotisserie Chicken

Image Source: Flickr user terren in Virginia

We can always count on Dr. Oz to expose the truth about our favorite foods. He recently investigated the hidden ingredients in rotisserie chicken, and now we finally know why it's so addictive. He teamed up with award-winning writer Mark Schatzker to figure out why Americans can't get enough of the stuff, especially Costco's $5 rotisserie chicken.

The first shocking piece of information is that rotisserie chicken is often processed, in other words, "pre-seasoned in factories," and then shipped to supermarkets, where "an employee can put it on the skewer and cook it." You may already know part of what makes store-bought rotisserie chickens so tasty is that they're on the salty side, but the skin is also flavored with MSG and sugar, among other natural flavors. Similar to potato chips, this combination helps explain why we can never have too much rotisserie chicken. Despite the seemingly scariness of it all, Dr. Oz says it may be "one of the healthiest processed foods out there." And in similar Dr. Oz. fashion, he suggests taking off the skin to keep it healthier. But if that sounds like insanity, add other sides to your plate to avoid overeating.

Why Anastasia Beverly Hills Is Giving Refunds on Subculture Palettes

As a follow-up to the Modern Renaissance eye shadow palette, Anastasia Beverly Hills finally released its highly anticipated Subculture Palette ($42) on July 25. Despite the brand's exceptional reputation, however, shoppers quickly realized something was amiss. Upon receiving the palette, many noted the unusual fall-out and lack of pigmentation. Now, the brand's president, Norvina Claudia Soare, is addressing the issue.

On Twitter, Norvina was honest and admitted that it was the first time Anastasia Beverly Hills had used an automatic pressing system in the process of making each eye shadow. Unfortunately, some shadows weren't pressed hard enough, resulting in the fall-out. Norvina added in another tweet, "There are a ton of factors that create a problem, the intention to make things perfect is there but sometimes stuff happens."

As the brand continues to work through the problem, however, Norvina encouraged shoppers to return the product and receive a full refund. In the meantime, she is adamant about fixing the press problem and releasing palettes that she feels fully confident about.

If you received a faulty palette, Norvina recommends contacting customer service as they are aware of the faulty palettes and can assist shoppers in returning the product. Regarding the entire fiasco, Norvina is ultimately urging everyone to have "a little patience."

Chrissy Teigen Is Refreshingly Honest About Her "Period Skin" and Hormonal Acne

Another day, another Chrissy Teigen moment that makes us go "same." The model, who has shown off her stretch marks and been open about getting liposuction on her armpits, once again got candid about her beauty routine when she posted an unfiltered Snapchat video showing off her hormonal breakout.

Angling the camera at some zits on her nose, cheek, and chin, she said, "This is my skin on my period. Look at it. So angry. How?!" Haven't we all been there before?

It's especially refreshing to see a model who we're so used to seeing made up and on red carpets or magazine covers being really honest about her bad days. It makes her seem a little more real, and her followers are now praising her for making women feel less self-conscious. Read some of their reactions:

13 Insanely Awesome Cooking Hacks For Summer

Unless you want to make things hard on yourself, you need these food hacks in your life for Summer. These tips for the best way to cut a watermelon, the quickest way to peel a mango, and more will have you saying, "Why didn't I think of that?"

We Popped the Question: Are Birkenstocks Still in Style?

"Are Birkenstocks still in style? I need a flat sandal that's actually comfortable," my friend texted me the other day. And that got me thinking: are Birkenstocks stylish? Would I recommend that you invest in a pair by the OG double-buckle, foot-hugging shoe brand? Absolutely. Because while Birkenstocks had their big moment years ago, fashion girls are still wearing the slides with everything from minidresses and baseball caps for brunch to romantic, long dresses on vacation.

Only, they're not all by Birkenstock. Just like any widely accepted trend, you can find it in so many places. Prada's velvet-and-leather design looks so similar to a Birk, it's crazy. But the same goes for Marni's two-toned flats and Zara's speckled shoes. Scroll for a variety of different versions (Birkenstock included) that I'd recommend for any gal who wants to master that laid-back, sporty look this Summer in a pair of slip-ons.

Leave It to Angelina Jolie to Wear Summer's Most Practical Sandals

Whether it's a sleek gray bag or a pair of black boots, Angelina Jolie knows how to rock her neutrals. The actress stepped out with her son Knox wearing a simple gray sweater over a black dress. There was nothing too out of the ordinary about her look - but then we spotted her amazing sandals.

For the outing, Angelina wore a pair of beige, strappy sandals by K. Jacques. The leather shoes were not only stylish but practical for the Summer too. While they don't exactly turn heads, they've got a flat, comfortable fit and will match with any outfit you've got. Have a look at her full ensemble ahead, and shop the shoes if you're feeling inspired.

I'm a Biracial Woman of Color and I'm Just as "All American" as Anyone Else

I loathe the term all American. It's always attributed to some blond-haired, blue-eyed good ole boy or girl who is the standard by which people of color are held up to. It immediately tells us that we don't belong. That we are outsiders. That we will never be good enough. It doesn't matter what we've contributed to this country or even that we've fought and given our lives for this country. If we don't "look" American, it doesn't matter how well we speak the language or how long we or our ancestors have lived here - we still aren't welcome. We are not treated as American because we are still not seen as American.

This concept of people not seeing me for who I am has affected the way I carry and define myself. I was born to an Irish mother and a Filipino father, but I don't look like either. I can pass for white, but never Filipino. I identify as a woman of color, but I'm not very colorful. The paleness of my skin has always made me feel like I can't fully embrace my brown side because of how people see me and probably how I see myself.

Growing up, my parents deeply influenced my identity. I want to preface this by saying I deeply love my parents and this isn't an attempt to call them out on their faults. I'm writing this to show how I've come to the conclusions I've come to and how I've come to identify myself based on my background.

That being said, my Filipino-American father has completely assimilated to American culture, so much so that I sometimes ask, "You know you're brown, right? I know you live in Coeur d'Alene, ID, now, where you are the entire Filipino population, but you're still brown." All joking aside, I feel he has in many ways neglected to keep our Filipino culture alive. He may cook typical Filipino dishes sometimes, but only because he wants to eat them. I don't feel like there's any sense of pride in our culture, even though he does say he is proud to be Filipino when prompted.

The most disheartening part for me is that he didn't teach us Tagalog because he said he didn't want us to have an accent. I questioned whether me not having an accent was more important than preserving our culture. He didn't say it was, it was just how he felt at the time because of how it affected him and the opportunities he feels he may have missed out on.

Then, it dawned on me: the privilege I have as a first-generation American on my father's side. I get to embrace my Filipino side and keep it alive without having to deal with the struggles that my father and so many others who immigrated to this country had to endure. Thinking of what he and countless other immigrants went through in this country makes the next thing I'm going to write even more painful.

My mother is in many ways a typical white American: claims patriotism and passion for her country when questionable and offensive things fly out of her mouth. Or demands that people speak English here in America but is furious when the restaurants in foreign countries don't have English translations on their menu. Oh, the irony! When I was younger, driving in the car with her in our predominantly Asian neighborhood was a contemptuous experience: "Learn how to f*cking drive!" "Go back to your f*cking country!" "Go back to where you came from!" Those are the ones that stood out and still stick with me as I sit here and think about it.

If these people, like my father - her husband - were supposed to go back to where they came from, then where do I belong?

I still feel the same emotions that I felt when I would watch her, tears welling in my eyes as I sat there quietly imploding. I would ask her how she could say such terrible things when I was part Asian to which she would reply, "You're not Asian, you're Pacific Islander." My own mother couldn't even see me. And for a moment, I would forget she was my mother as I thought to myself, "Who do you think you are, white woman, to define who I am?" But maybe that's why she said those things, because in those heated moments, she would forget that I was her daughter. My mother. Telling people that I identified with to go back to where they came from. To go back to their country. If these people, like my father - her husband - were supposed to go back to where they came from, then where do I belong?

I've struggled most of my life trying to establish my own identity and how I define myself. Many of my earlier conclusions had been a consequence of how others perceived me to be. In a sociology class back in college, we read an article by Yen Le Espiritu subtly titled "We Don't Sleep Around Like White Girls Do," about Filipino immigrant mothers not wanting their daughters to be like American girls because of their alleged promiscuity. We were then instructed to break into small groups and discuss. My group consisted of my friend Aileen, a Filipina-American, and two, I think, Italian-American girls. We were about to start discussing when one of the girls started ranting and I remember it going something like this:

"Oh my God, like, I am so offended that they would say that about us. Like, I know so many Filipino girls and they are, like, the biggest sluts. Like, how dare they just say that we're all like that, that's so offensive. I can't believe they think like that, like, how rude!"

She took a beat and looked at Aileen.

"Oh, my God! Like, I have this Filipino friend and her mom is, like, always rearranging the furniture in their house. That's, like, all she ever does. Every time I go over there, the furniture is, like, always in a different place. . . . I bet your mom does that too, huh?"

I don't remember exactly what Aileen's response was as I sat in dumbfounded silence, but I remember the tone being along the lines of, "F*ck no!" I just stared at the girl, a look of confusion that seemed to have paralyzed the rest of my bodily functions as I wondered if she had the capability to get through the title of the article.

A few moments later, she proceeded to show us a picture of her sister at prom then told us, "But, my mom has to, like, hide it when my grandfather comes over because he would freak out if he knew she went with, like, a black guy. But, I just don't get how you don't like black people. Like, they are so cool. They're, like, such good dancers."

Done. We were done. We looked at her then at her friend, whose face seemed to plead, "I'm sorry. Yeah, I know I come in with her every day, but please don't associate me with this stupidity."

We walked out, Aileen venting as I listened. Then, Aileen turned to me, saying, "And she didn't even acknowledge you. She knows you're Filipino, but she didn't ask you if your mom arranged f*cking furniture. And you know why? It's because she doesn't see you as Filipino."

I hadn't even noticed. Maybe because my mom's white and I automatically assumed she knew that even though she didn't. Or maybe it's because I didn't know what I was.

Yes, I've technically always known that I'm part Filipino and part white. But I didn't feel like I could be Filipino because I didn't look like I was Filipino, as ridiculous as that sounds. I didn't feel like I was able to claim this part of myself because I didn't physically resemble what someone would typically picture when they imagined a Filipino person. But it's not just me. It seems like most people I meet have questions and concerns trying to define or question my existence.

"You don't look Filipino." Well, yes I do. Because I am. But I never say this. I just nod and smile politely.

"Do you speak Tagalog?" No, but I'm learning. I still criticize my father for not teaching me to, you know, carry on our culture and save me a ton of money.

"Do you speak Spanish?" No! I'm Filipino.

"You're so white." Yeah, I know. I used to spend a lot of money and a lot of hours ruining my skin under tanning beds because my paleness seemed to put off people. So deep was my tanning obsession that when my husband sees old photos of me, he feels inclined to give me a Jersey Shore nickname. My own mother remarked on the whiteness of my skin to which I replied, "Uh, that's your fault."

"How did you get this?" I was asked this the first time I used my Philippine passport in Manila. As I approached the two Filipino customs agents, they looked at me warily as I got closer. They looked at my passport and asked how I had gotten such a document. I didn't understand so I asked them what they meant and they just repeated it. I said I just applied for it. They looked at each other, looked at my passport, looked at me, then asked, "You're Filipino?"

Proof! I had proof that I was Filipino and they still didn't believe me.

We're constantly told that we identify too much with one side or aren't enough of the other and vice versa depending on who declares themselves the authority on our identities at that given moment.
In high school, I distinctly remember walking into the Filipino club orientation and walking right out because I didn't feel like I belonged there with all the "real" Filipinos. This constant feeling of not belonging or not being "enough" is something that I know many people of mixed ethnicity struggle with regardless of what their mix is. I've found that a lot of mixed people can relate more to each other than to others of their same ethnicities. We're constantly told that we identify too much with one side or aren't enough of the other and vice versa depending on who declares themselves the authority on our identities at that given moment.

So where do we belong? Who are we? Why can people not see us?

I recently spoke with a dear cousin of mine who is Filipino and black, and she reiterated these same feelings I have of feeling lost. Feeling like we don't really belong in either world. She told me about a biracial woman she saw on an episode of Needles & Pins that spoke so poignantly of being mixed race. After we spoke, I immediately went to my television to find it. The episode was based in New Zealand and focused on the Ta moko, traditional Maori tattooing. The episode featured many Maori people of mixed race who spoke about the difficulties of having ancestors who are both the oppressors and the oppressed. But these young people were in the process of rediscovering their history and reclaiming it through decolonization. One of the women reflected on her mixed-race identity:

"I thought my weakness was that I was half Maori or half Jamaican . . . on and out of different kinds of worlds. I never really felt that I belonged and that's how I carried myself. And then I realized that those weren't my weaknesses and I wasn't half of anything. I was completely Maori. Completely Jamaican. Completely myself."

"Yeeeeesss," I cried to the television. This. All of this. I've always felt like I wasn't enough because I was considered to be half of each.

But I'm not half. I'm not missing anything. I am a whole human being.

Even if people may see me as something different, it does not change who I am. People will always try to define me and put me into the box they feel I belong in. But how I feel is who I am and whether people see that does not matter. What I am matters. And I am completely Filipino. I am completely American. I am completely myself. With my brown hair, my brown eyes, and my yellow-tinted skin, I am all American and I belong here.

We all do.

Use This Tip For Avoiding a Supercrowded Day at Disneyland

I recently visited Disneyland on a Saturday - in July, no less - after a major new ride opened and a handful of closed attractions reopened, and I couldn't believe how NOT crowded it was at both parks. Wait times were reasonable, lines for food were manageable, and we didn't have to fight through masses of people to get from land to land. You'd think that Summer would be high season for Disney parks (no school for kids), and Saturdays are usually the worst, so why the change? My theory is that it came down to it being a blocked-out date for passholders.

Historically, blockout dates are supposed to be the busiest, most popular days, but at this point, so many people (especially locals) have annual passes that the dates they aren't allowed in are now becoming the least crowded. Of course, there are other factors that cause some days at the park to be more crowded over others, including that Summer has dropped in popularity with all the Halloween and holiday offerings Disney has added in recent years. Or it could just be a result of the overall drop in attendance at the parks worldwide. That said, consider trying a blockout day if you're debating between a couple of equally popular dates.

Here are the blockout dates for the rest of 2017:

This Is How All Your Favorite Chefs Cook Bacon

If you believe that bacon is one of the world's greatest treasures, you're going to want to keep reading. While you obviously know how to make bacon (either in a skillet or in the oven), you might not realize how many other cooking methods there are that can make it even more delicious. Allow us to offer you some bacon-making inspiration from some of our favorite celebrity chefs, from brining to glazing and more. You might just find your new go-to breakfast recipe.

Ina Garten: Oven Roasted

Sometimes Ina Garten, Food Network queen, goes for simplicity over complexity, as evidenced by her oven-roasted bacon recipe. That five-star rating doesn't lie, either. If you've got store-bought applewood smoked bacon, you're just a simple technique away from perfectly crispy bacon.

Michael Symon: From Scratch

Chef Michael Symon doesn't mess around when it comes to bacon. His homemade bacon recipe starts with five pounds of skin-on pork belly, which is then coated in a spice rub and refrigerated for up to 10 days. While that seems like a lot of work, it's worth the effort if you love bacon. One commenter wrote, "This recipe rocks! It was well worth the 10 day wait. I followed it to a T and it was delicious. Better than the bacon I get from the butcher." If you've ever wanted to attempt entirely scratch-made bacon, this recipe is a keeper.

Alex Guarnaschelli: Candied

If your idea of good bacon involves sweet, salty, and sticky, you need Alex Guarnaschelli's candied bacon recipe. Thanks to a coating of finely ground black pepper and light brown sugar, the slow-roasted bacon develops a saucy coating that's finger-licking good.

Alton Brown: Brined For 3 Days

With a brine made of sugar, salt, molasses, and apple cider, Alton marinates raw pork belly for three days to achieve his Iron Chef's bacon results. Once the meat is ready, Alton's tip for baking the bacon in the oven is to line the pan with paper towels to soak up the fat and prevent smoking.

Bobby Flay: Maple-Dijon Glazed

Bobby Flay's maple-dijon- and black-pepper-glazed bacon is next level. By combining the flavors of maple syrup, dijon mustard, and smoked bacon, you'll get a sweet-salty-tangy bite that's hard to resist.

Nars Takes a Dark Turn (Literally) With Its Fall Collection

One of our favorite things about Fall is getting to bust our tried-and-true leather jacket out of storage. So luckily for us, Nars just released a rocker-chic collection that is made to match said old faithful jacket, broken-in Converse, and ripped jeans.

The line of six products includes three Kohliners, two eye shadows, and one blush. Cue (on-brand Rolling Stones or The Strokes) record scratch: yup, there's only one blush in this collection.

Considering that Nars' rouge-game is renowned far and wide, this news may seem strange. But we're anything from disappointed, because the showstopping, metallic raspberry-mauve shade "Blissful" is like the line's mic drop. It's all we need.

Besides, like any badass rocker chic, we all know the VIP grunge look is all about the eyes. The liners come in two shades of metallic bronze and one blue that's more electric than an amplified guitar. But this isn't your standard, seen-it-before, smoky-eye fare. The powders' metallic finish lightens up its dark color for a funky, nontraditional look.

Read on to see each product in this collection, which we're taking as an excuse to buy more concert tickets.

Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke Are Just as Cute Together in Real Life

Game of Thrones fans are understandably freaking out about Jon Snow finally meeting Daenerys Targaryen on the show, but honestly, it's just as fun to see Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke hanging out together in real life. The pair has been photographed together at several events over the past few years - along with Kit's girlfriend, former castmate Rose Leslie. Meanwhile, if the latest episode is any indication, it looks like Kit and Emilia's offscreen friendship will translate to great onscreen chemistry. Check out some of their cutest moments together, then see more pictures of the Game of Thrones cast out of costume and peek at some of Kit's sexiest snaps ever.

Gordon Ramsay Reveals the 1 Place You Should Never Eat

Sure, Gordon Ramsay has high standards, but is there really anything he would never eat? Turns out it's more of a place where he would never eat rather than one specific food - and that's on a plane. In an interview with Refinery29, Gordon revealed his feelings about airplane food and why those feelings might be justified. "There's no f*cking way I eat on planes," he said. "I worked for airlines for 10 years, so I know where this food's been and where it goes, and how long it took before it got on board." Yikes. The man has a point - there's no denying that airplane food is not the best.

So what's a traveler to do to avoid midflight hunger, according to the world-renowned chef? If you're like him, you'll make time to stop at a nice Italian restaurant for a little meat and cheese. "A nice selection of Italian meats, a little glass of red wine, some sliced apples or pears with some parmesan cheese," Gordon says of his ideal airport snack.

Alternatively, of course, you could eat at Gordon Ramsay's very own Plane Food, a restaurant in Terminal 5 of the London Heathrow Airport. There, you'll find truffle mac and cheese, Szechuan squid, and spicy tuna tartare . . . certainly nothing that's reheated in convection ovens on an airplane.

Amal Clooney's Funky Bag Was Specially Made For Her - by Her Big Sister

Last October, Amal Clooney wore a fringe bag with her boho-inspired outfit. We didn't think too much about it until we discovered it was designed by someone special in her life . . . her big sister Tala! The 42-year-old launched her brand Totally Tala in Asia (perhaps this is why you haven't heard of it yet) and while it's a hit abroad, she has plans to expand her accessories collection to Europe and beyond.

Amal's obviously already a fan, which she confirmed when she wore one of her big sis's signature items. The design comes in several colors and fits right in with the funky vibe of Tala's entire line. If you don't know what we mean, read on to see some of her unique designs. We wouldn't be surprised if Amal keeps a few more of the fringe pieces in steady rotation.

George and Amal Clooney Lock Down a Stunning Manhattan Apartment Perfect for Their Growing Family

With residences in Studio City, CA; Lake Como, Italy; and England, it only makes sense that George and Amal Clooney were ready for a permanent place in New York City – especially now that they're the new parents of twins. According to Page Six, the couple purchased a luxury apartment at One Hundred East Fifty Third Street, and it's really something special. Although they did not opt for the penthouse, listed for $65 million, they reportedly went for a unit in the skyscraper building, which is expected to be completed next year. The site reports that George and Amal decided this would be the perfect location to buy an apartment because of its close proximity to the United Nations for Amal, who will also be teaching at Columbia Law School. But of course, the over-the-top "hotel-like" amenities did help convince the couple.

The first two levels of the building are occupied by French chef Joël Robuchon with a gourmet marketplace and restaurant. There's a wellness facility with a Pilates and ballet room, a yoga room, a sauna and steam room, a 60-foot sunlit swimming pool, and so much more. The building has full concierge services with a "dedicated lifestyle manager, global travel agents, personal shopping, and priority event access." Each residence will have 11-foot ceilings and jaw-dropping views likely to take your breath away. Keep reading to see all the photos inside George and Amal's stunning new NYC building.

Mom of Kid With ADHD to Stranger in Walmart: "Mind Your Own F*cking Business"

"Oh, for Christ's sake give her a cookie so she'll shut up!"

That's what a complete stranger said to Taylor Myers, a mom in front of her in line at Walmart.

Up until that moment, Taylor had just been trying to do the right thing for her daughter Sophie with ADHD, whose "obsessive little heart" was stuck on a bag of chips Taylor had taken away from her after she called her a "butthole."

For several minutes, Taylor tried to ignore her.

"What's giving in to bad behavior going to do but reinforce the bad behavior?" she wrote on Facebook. "I've walked out of stores hundreds of times because of her. Almost every time, actually, I end up leaving with nothing I came for and a tantrum-having four-year-old attached to my hand and a baby on my hip, but this time I had to stick it out to get the groceries. I tell her for the tenth time to sit down so she doesn't fall."

That's when the woman behind her snapped.

"I could've responded in a nicer way," she wrote. "I could've explained to her that my four-year-old has pretty severe ADHD, I raise both my children alone, and I'm doing my best."

But this stranger didn't deserve the explanation: "Instead, I heard 'she's four years old and you need to mind your own f*cking business' come out of my mouth."

"I kept my composure until I finished what I was doing and walked to self check out so I could avoid facing anyone else as "that person". The person with the misbehaving child. The person who seems lazy because they're ignoring the behavior. The person who knows doing anything but ignoring it is only going to make it worse. By the time I made it to self check out, tears are pouring down my face. I've lost it. I'm angry, my feelings are hurt, I'm offended, and I'm just freakin' sad that I can't have one good experience in a store with my children."

Thankfully, a different stranger approached and proved how it's just as easy to be kind as it is to be cruel.

"As I scan my things, she asks Sophie questions to distract her, but backs me up when Sophie begins to go on about wanting the chips," Taylor said. "'No, you can't have those today. You have to be good for your mommy. She needs you to be good for her. I have a little girl just like you. How old are you? How old is brother?'"

For Taylor, it was a reminder that you never know the problems a child has that causes them to misbehave.

"Unless you know the struggle of being a parent to a child like mine, you cannot judge me," she wrote. "Thank you to the woman in Walmart today, for showing that kindness to my children. Thank you for walking us out. Thank you for backing me up. Mamas have to stick together."
