3 Surprising Realities of Visiting Magnolia Market in Real Life
If you've ever dreamed about heading to Waco, TX, to check out Magnolia Market for yourself - and what Fixer Upper fan hasn't?! - then you're going to be interested in what blogger Rachel Teodoro has to say. She's a Chip and Joanna Gaines expert, having interviewed Fixer Upper cast members and visited the Silos several times. She recently shared 11 little-known facts about visiting Waco and was kind enough to let us share some of the most surprising revelations about Magnolia Market below. Whether you're planning a visit yourself or just curious about what it would be like to pose beneath the #milestomagnolia sign and play bean-bag toss on the Silos lawn, we encourage you to check them out below. Then, head to Rachel's blog for the full story.
Joanna's Mom Welcomes Guests
You're probably not going to run into Chip and Joanna while visiting Magnolia Market, but if you visit on a Friday or Saturday, you're likely to see Joanna's mom, who greets guests those days. She's as gracious and lovely as her daughter - and willing to pose for a picture with you, Rachel says.
They Have Their Own Prayer Team
It's no secret that faith is a huge part of Chip and Joanna's life, but what few fans know, Rachel says, is that Magnolia Market has its own prayer team. They take the prayer requests they receive seriously, praying over all of them. The prayer leader seems to be Joanna's mom, who is often spotted with her hand outstretched in prayer over the land the Gaines build and work on.
There Are Some Shopping Deals to Be Had
The experience of visiting the store in Waco is undeniably more exciting than browsing the website, but the goods and prices are identical. While you'll return home with the memories of visiting Magnolia Market in person, Rachel says you won't return with any special goods that you couldn't also buy online.
Update March 15, 2017: Magnolia Market reached out to POPSUGAR to clarify that while about 40 percent of the goods in their Magnolia Market store are available in their online shop, the other 60 percent can only be purchased at the physical location. "Joanna wants to make sure that our guests that are traveling to Waco are able to purchase unique items that are not found online," a rep told us.

Why Saying "Just One Kid" to a Mom With an Only Child Is a Hideous Crime
Whether it's innocent or not, it's not uncommon to hear these words uttered to me as a mom of an only child:
"You have just one kid?"
Yes, just one kid.
There's something damning and almost insulting about this statement. "Just," to me, signifies that one child is not enough. It suggests that everyone should indeed be having multiple children or at the very least two. "Just" screams, "Oh, you only have one kid. That's nothing. I have a lot of kids. Now THAT'S a lot of work!"
I'm here to tell the world that "just one" is enough. It's enough kids. It's enough work. It's a completely legitimate choice. I chose to have one kid, and when I considered having another, it didn't work out for me due to health reasons and a divorce. At this point, I cherish and love having an only child. Why I chose to have one child, whether it was for a health issue or simply because I only wanted one child, is no one's business. No woman needs to account for why she has no kids, 10 kids, or two kids. Our reproductive plans are our own to carve out. We can only hope that if people have children, whether two or 10, they care for them as active mothers and fathers.
And what really gets me fired up is the insinuation that "just one child" is not work. Granted, I am certain that running a household of multiple children is pretty much akin to running free in a psych ward, but "one child" is still work. Besides, it's not my problem as a mom of an only child that someone else chose to add on work by having more kids and I - or any other mom of an only child - didn't, no matter our reason for having an only child. I never put a gun to anyone's head and asked her to have many kids. So when you tell me "just one kid" as if I am having personal spa days every day of my life, I would like to remind you that your comment is insulting, not supportive of mothers, and assumptive in so many ways. One woman could have two healthy children, and another could have one who is not healthy. Which do you think is more work? Another mother could be a single parent of one, and a mom of three could have a comfortable lifestyle and active dad and partner. Who is to say what is easier or harder?
And furthermore, why are we as mothers so insistent on claiming martyr's status? Ladies, instead of pointing out who has it the worst - single parents vs. married, working mothers vs. stay-at-home mothers, etc. - let's instead acknowledge that in each home and family, every mom has her own unique battles; it doesn't matter how many children she has, whether she works or not, and if she's married, divorced and coparenting, or parenting alone 24/7. By fighting this invisible battle and mommy war of "Who has it the worst," we are creating an unsupportive and weak atmosphere for ourselves and for our daughters. So put down your metaphorical crosses and try to see each unique situation as it is.
When you see a mother of one, don't assume that it's easy. To be honest? Sometimes it's more work to entertain one child because we can't simply say, "Go play with your brother," but for me thankfully, my daughter is independent. Quite frankly, the idea of having more than one child makes me a little nutty. I have loads of respect for mothers holding down the fort with more than one child, especially those who raise three or more. Kudos to you ladies! But for this mama, one kid is enough work, enough love, enough joy, enough pain, and enough in my heart to keep me over-the-moon happy that I get to call myself a mom.
Last but not least, let's not forget the pain you could be inflicting on a mother when you say those insensitive words: "Just one kid." Many moms I know with only children had one child because another was not in the cards for health, financial, or fertility reasons. When you open your mouth and spill out, "Oh, just one kid," you are ignorant of the potential heartache lying underneath your comment. Maybe that mom didn't want it to be "just one kid," but that's what she got and she is grateful for that child.
Ladies, if you're rocking one, two, or five kids, let's all be here for each other as women and mothers virtually, in person, and in spirit. If only we banded together as a unit - mothers of all races, classes, and identities - we would be a most powerful group.
42 Fall Styling Hacks So Good, They Could Only Be Invented by Olivia Palermo
Just by browsing through photos of Olivia Palermo's signature street style, it's pretty obvious she's got a favorite season to dress for. She confirmed as much when we spoke with her:
"I love Fall because you can do Fall layering. But in the summertime, you don't need to have a jacket on, so you can kind of go both ways on that. Since we are on our way into Fall, I'd probably start [my shopping] at Tibi, Moncler, or Banana Republic, where my own collection comes out in September and includes great oversize statement coats."
We're not surprised the entrepreneur prefers the transitional months. After all, they fall during Fashion Week, where Olivia is a front-row mainstay as she travels from city to city. We imagine she has the most fun constructing outfits for all the shows and parties, as she's snapped by the paparazzi at every turn.
But there's a reason everyone's taking note of her layering game, and it starts with these unbeatable hacks we might never think to employ if it weren't for Olivia. Read on for a list that will definitely inspire you as you get your own wardrobe into tip-top shape.

How to Write a Résumé With Zero Work Experience
So you just graduated high school or college and you are ready to enter the workforce to become a productive member of society. You've chosen your career path and are excited to finally see those four long years of all-nighters pay off.
The only problem is that you have never worked a day in your life. Your résumé looks like a barren wasteland, and if it even makes it to the hiring manager's desk they will be sure to see tumbleweeds.
So the question is, "How can you write an effective résumé with ZERO work experience?"
A simple Google search will result in generic résumé tips like, "prove yourself" or "find the sweet spot." These tips are unspecific and provide little value when it comes to actually sitting down and writing out your résumé.
Instead, here are three actionable tips that will actually help you write a résumé without any professional experience.
1. Begin With a Career Objective
Let me begin by saying that the career objective receives a lot of criticism for being antiquated and damaging to your résumé. This is due to the fact that the purpose of the career objective is misunderstood. The purpose of the career objective is not to tell the hiring manger what you hope to get out of the company. Rather, the purpose of the career objective is to showcase your skills and abilities that will help you to successfully fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
With that being said, a career objective is great for résumés that lack professional experience because it emphasizes your character and personality traits that make you the right fit for the position. Starting your résumé off with the characteristics that make you valuable to the company will help to snag the attention of the hiring manager.
Here are two examples of how a recent high school or college graduate might compose their career objective:
High School Grad Career Objective:
"Hardworking high school student (3.6/4.0 GPA) with exceptional interpersonal and research skills. Seeking to use my abilities to successfully fulfill the [Position] at your company. My enthusiasm to learn new skills quickly will help your company meet its milestones."
This is a strong career objective because it showcases the applicant's traits that will be valued by the company. Also, if your GPA is above a 3.0, then be sure to include it in your objective, as it will help catch the eye of the hiring manager.
College Graduate Career Objective:
"Recent graduate (3.5/4.0 GPA) with a BA in [Field of Study]. Looking to leverage my experience in student government and the honors society to effectively meet the requirements of [Position] at your company. An enthusiastic worker aspiring to help achieve company goals and take on more responsibility."
If you are a college graduate, then you should add the degree you obtained and your GPA (if above 3.0) to your career objective. In addition, describe any provable traits or experiences that are relevant to the position you are applying for. In the sample above, the applicant mentions their experience in student government where they are likely to have gained leadership and management skills.
Finally, when writing your career objective try to find skills or traits that the employer emphasizes in the job description. If you add these qualities in your career objective, your résumé will definitely catch the eye of the employer.
2. Expand Your Education Section
For the seasoned professional, the education of their résumé is often very compact and is a means to prove you have a degree. Most professional résumés will only include the name of the school, name of the major, graduation date, and GPA in the education section.
However for an applicant without professional experience, the education section of the résumé should be strengthened in order to make up for the lack of paid experience. To reinforce your education section consider adding:
- GPA (if above 3.0)
- Clubs you participated in
- Athletics
- Academic Awards/Honors
- Relevant coursework
- Publications
By expanding your education section, an applicant without professional experience is still able to effectively highlight their skills and qualities. Also, by adding your participation in clubs and athletics, you exhibit your potential to be an enthusiastic team player to the employer. Including your academic awards and relevant coursework conveys to the employer your work ethic and knowledge relevant to the position.
An issue for some applicants is that they have a hard time thinking of the activities they participated in or just weren't that active in school. In this case focus more on your relevant coursework. For more ideas on what to include, check out these education section tips. Although it may take some brainstorming, extending the education section is crucial to the success of a résumé without professional work experience.
3. Add a Major Achievements Section
While at school did you participate in student government, organize an event, present a project at a conference, volunteer, or write for the school paper? If so, then adding a major achievements section would greatly benefit your résumé.
A major achievements section can act as an extension of your educational experience and helps to fill space on your résumé. The structure of major achievements is similar to that of a professional experience section. In this section your activities are treated as professional jobs, but because they were unpaid and for school they fall under the heading "major achievements." For each activity, list a few points that detail the responsibilities you had within each organization.
Here are a few example points for someone who participated in student government:
- Organized 5 school dances within a budget over the course of one year.
- Raised student body complaints and issues with school administrators.
- Designed an anti-bullying campaign to raise awareness of the harmful effects of bullying on our peers.
The points above help to communicate the applicant's ability to organize, act as a leader, and resolve problems. Formatting your achievements like the sample above encourages the hiring manager to overlook the fact that the applicant lacks professional experience. For some more ideas on how to structure your major achievements section, take a look at this high school résumé sample and college graduate résumé sample.
There is no need to fear the lack of professional experience on your résumé. Follow the tips above, and you will have a résumé that compensates for the lack of experience and gets you the interview. As a final tip, writing a strong cover letter is also a great way to make up for the absence of professional experience and help to complement your résumé. Good luck on your job hunt!

Olivia Palermo Still Collects the Same Designer Bag as Carrie Bradshaw
When Meli Melo Creative Director Melissa Del Bono approached Olivia Palermo to come up with two custom shades for the brand's new Severine bag, Olivia knew exactly which colorways to add to the line. "Whenever I look at a bag - especially transitioning into Fall - I'm always looking for rich, Fall colors, so I think adding a nice white can help you play with beiges and neutral tones for a monochrome look, whereas burgundy is obviously more of a Fall feel," Olivia told us.
The Severine, which is so delicate and pretty it could pass for a bracelet, also comes in Liquorice Black, Poppy Red, and Primrose Pink and retails for $750 at both Meli Melo and OliviaPalermo.com. Olivia models the different styles beautifully in the campaign shots, which you can admire when you read on. Even more importantly, you'll find out what Olivia looks for when shopping for a bag, what she packs in her own pouches, and the one designer satchel she's been collecting for years. How Kanye West's 2002 Car Crash Shaped His Entire Career
Kanye West has made headlines for so many different reasons in the past few years. From his marriage to Kim Kardashian to his two adorable kids, North and Saint, to his heartbreaking breakdown, the rapper is never out of the news for too long. But back in 2002, when Kanye was still just an up-and-coming artist, he made headlines for a truly terrifying reason: a near-fatal car accident.
Just two weeks after signing a deal with Roc-a-Fella Records, Kanye drove home after working late at a California recording studio on Oct. 23, 2002. He fell asleep at the wheel and crashed his car into an oncoming vehicle. The driver of the other car broke both of his legs, while Kanye shattered his jaw. But since Kanye is, well, Kanye, he didn't let his near-death experience hold him back from his new opportunities. Two weeks after the accident, he wrote his hit single "Through the Wire," and recorded it with his mouth still wired shut.
Kanye spoke about just how crucial this recovery period was for his career, telling Interview magazine in 2014, "The accident gave me the opportunity to do what I really wanted to do. During that recovery period, I just spent all my time honing my craft and making The College Dropout." While we wish Kanye never had to go through that experience, we also don't know what we would do without that album.

6 Closet Organization Tips I Learned Straight From an Ikea Pro
Marie Kondo once said, "Storage should reduce the effort needed to put things away, not the effort needed to get them out." From personal experience, I can attest she's right. For years I lived with my bedroom in a state of perpetual clutter for the sole reason that there was no easy place for me to put my stuff away. Piles of pants grew into mountains, purses overflowed out of one tiny closet until the door wouldn't close, and shirts took up long-term residency atop one of three dilapidated dressers because the broken drawers required exhaustive wrestling to open. Soon the room was more laundry pile than personal space. I was overwhelmed, and my response was to keep the door shut.
Despite the poor condition my clothing and accessories were living in, I valued them and had spent time building a fashion collection I cared about. I wanted a storage solution to match; something that not only accommodated all my items, but celebrated them. I wanted a celeb-worthy dream closet - but getting Champagne on my beer budget wasn't going to be easy. Just when I had given up and resigned to living in a name-brand garbage dump, Ikea reached out to me.
The retailer's incredibly talented home tour makeover squad knew just how to give me the luxurious high-fashion wardrobe storage solution I craved at a reasonable price. Designer Stephanie Recupero led the project. After seeing the space and learning of my needs, she declared that a customized Pax wardrobe was just the solution I was looking for. Check out the slideshow ahead to learn Stephanie's six pro design decisions that made my closet so fantastic, and then read how my new wardrobe impacted so much more than my clothes.

3 Ingenious Cooking Secrets Straight From an Italian Grandmother
Like many Italian cooks, Laura Vitale learned a lot from her Italian grandmother. Laura grew up spending time in the kitchen, cooked her way to the top, and now hosts Cooking Channel's Simply Laura and YouTube's Laura in the Kitchen, where she has more than 2 million subscribers. After speaking about her chili mac and cheese recipe with me, Laura shared some truly invaluable cooking tips that she learned from her Italian grandmother and that every home cook can benefit from. Get a free cooking lesson by remembering these three rules, straight from an unbeatable source.
1. Buy One Cheap Olive Oil and One Nice One
If you cook with olive oil a lot, it's smart to have one cheap bottle and one higher quality, more expensive bottle. "There should be two different kinds of olive oil you keep on hand. This is something I've done my whole life because my mother and my grandmother do," Laura said. "When you have two different kinds of olive oil, a standard olive oil and a more expensive version, that more expensive version can be used to make no-cook sauces that have such potent, fresh flavor," like basil pesto and bruschetta. Save the cheaper olive oil for cooking dishes where the flavor won't be able to shine as much, like kale and white bean soup with Italian sausage.
2. Freeze Parmesan Rinds to Add to Soup
You might think there's no use for a rind of parmesan cheese once you've grated every last strand, but that's not the case - in fact, you should be cooking with it. Laura notes that parmesan rinds are a crucial component to flavorful soups, saying, "Having a good base for your soup is so important; it's something that my grandma taught me. To make [soup] even better, you throw in a little bit of a wedge of parmigiano reggiano cheese in the pot as it cooks. It releases all that flavor as it cooks. It's not only just for garnish, but hits it at a much deeper level. I keep parmesan rinds in my freezer for times like this - it makes the biggest difference in the world."
3. Treat Time as an Ingredient
The best cooking tip Laura received from her grandmother is to recognize that time is just as important of an ingredient as any other. "Never mistake the difference between what takes a long time to cook and what takes a long time to prepare. One of the most important things when it comes to cooking is time - allowing something to cook for a while and not rushing it. When you're cooking for someone, make sure it comes from the heart; it's a different experience. [My grandmother] says, 'Half the time I don't even want to eat, I just want to cook for people because it makes me feel good.'"

It's bizarre to reflect on your life in 40-plus years, but saving early is the best way to go . . . especially because a new analysis by NerdWallet says the college class of 2015 will be experiencing retirement later than normal, due to increasing student debt and other factors.
Students of this class are expected to retire at age 75, which is two years later than the class of 2013 and well above today's average of 62. To put it in perspective, predicted life expectancy for this group is age 84, so they'll only be spending a measly nine years in retirement. I'm officially sad for the future.
Continuing on that note, the average student debt for 2015 is a nasty $35,000, and the median starting salary is $45,000. Also, rent is on the rise - up 11 percent from 2012, according to Zillow statistics. Finally, millennials are wary when it comes to investing (Must. Keep. Cash!), which could be costing them more than $300,000.
There is a silver lining here. All the extra time millennials spend saving for retirement means their money will grow with compound interest over the next 40 to 50 years. The biggest takeaway? Save, save, save. Saving just a few percent more will add years of retirement, which, clearly, today's generation could really use. Check out the infographic below for more useful tidbits.
Now let's go work our asses off for the next half a century.
The Harmful Effects of Instant Ramen Noodles
Yes, you know that instant ramen isn't good for you, but studies have confirmed just how harmful the prepackaged food can really be. A study in the Journal of Nutrition links instant noodle consumption with heart risk, particularly in women. The researchers conducted a study in South Korea, where consumption of instant noodles is the highest in the world, with more than 10,700 people ranging in age from 19 to 64. The results? "Women who consume instant noodles frequently were found to be more likely to have metabolic syndrome - the group of risk factors, including obesity and high blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar, that increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes."
The harmful effects were predominantly found in women and not men. Part of the study reads, "Women - though not men - who ate instant noodles at least twice a week showed a 68 percent higher risk of metabolic syndrome," which is a syndrome that can increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
The high sodium content in instant noodle products is obvious, but the main culprit is the noodles themselves. In another study by Dr. Braden Kuo, director of the gastrointestinal motility laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital at Harvard University, the doctor found unsettling results after testing digestion of the noodles. He used a tiny camera to study the breakdown of instant ramen noodles in the stomach and found out just how difficult it is for your body to digest the preservative-filled noodles. Warning: the photos are graphic. A preservative called TBHQ, which is found in many processed foods including Reese's and Chicken McNuggets, extends shelf life of fatty foods and makes them harder to digest. It's one of the many ingredients in Maruchan Chicken Ramen.
If you're hopelessly devoted to instant ramen (and it's a budget-friendly staple in your life), all hope is not lost. Dr. Frank B. Hu, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at Harvard, told The New York Times, "Once or twice a month is not a problem, but a few times a week really is."
Moral of the story: eating college-friendly instant ramen is OK, but moderation is key.
1 Makeup Artist's Viral Clapback to Haters Who Accused Her of Charging Too Much
At just 18 years old, Mikala Walker has already built her very own business around doing makeup. What started as a free favor for her friends quickly blossomed into a full-on side hustle, as she now does proms and the occasional bridal event.
As her skills and experience grew over the years, so did the prices she charged her clients - and rightfully so! Whereas she initially charged $20 for a full face, Mikala now prices her services at $75.
1 Guy Flawlessly Did His GF's Makeup and the Internet Responded in the Most Rage-Inducing Way
Take one look at her Instagram, and you'll instantly see that her impressive talent makes her services worth every darn penny. Many people accused her of charging too much money, with one user calling the price "pretty ridiculous for the quality of [her] work" and another labeling it as "total bs." But instead of letting the haters get the best of her, Mikala responded in a subtly sassy get oh-so-fitting way: by crunching some numbers to show her followers exactly how expensive all of her makeup products really are. She tweeted a list of the various items she uses, along with a photo of her calculator showing the whopping total: $635!
The fact that people complain about my price of $75 for full face but don't realize the actual cost behind it 🙂 http://pic.twitter.com/tZHBRMMYSw

Tons of her followers and other makeup artists quickly responded to support Mikala for firing back at the haters.
The Great Kindergarten Debate: Half Day or Full Day?
My town's schools start tomorrow, and I can feel the excitement all around me. At my gym's child-care center, many of the moms are sporting the contented expression of a woman about to leave for a Caribbean vacation; our local Trader Joe's is inviting moms in for a mimosa-and-chocolate party after drop-off; and at Target, I've seen pens, markers, and erasers literally flying off the shelves (yes, I've been there twice already this week, and yes, it's Tuesday).
Sadly, I'm still a couple of weeks away from my daughter Mae's first day of 4-year-old preschool, and we're a year away from her first day of "real" school - kindergarten. But kindergarten has already been very much on my mind for some time, mainly because I'm confident our very good school district's program just isn't going to work for her.
My town abandoned its full-day kindergarten program a few years ago, replacing it with one that lasts from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., which, taking in all the preschool extras my daughter is eagerly participating in this year, would mean that Mae would attend kindergarten a substantially fewer number of hours than she attends preschool. I am not OK with this. She is not OK with this.
I have heard many moms rally for half-day kindergarten and even opt out of full-day programs in their districts, but I am confident that my daughter's hungry mind needs more than a couple of hours of instruction to be satisfied. So what is a mom to do when you live in a wonderful school district, but you think its 2.5-hour kindergarten day kind of sucks?
I've been doing my research, talking to every mom I meet with similarly aged children about their own kindergarten experiences. Many of them have advised I move to the neighboring town, which offers a similarly wonderful school district with full-day kindergarten, but I love my house (and my sanity) too much to pack up and move for the sake of a single school year.
Others have advised I go the private route, so I've started looking into a few. The first one I found sounded amazing, but the tuition was more than five times what I paid to go to a year of college, so that quickly got nixed. The second was around the corner from my house, a promising start, but when I heard the class size was capped at 25, I began to question if my daughter would really get enough individual attention to warrant the thousands of dollars we'd be shelling out for her kindergarten education. Another private school I'd heard good things about does offer full-day kindergarten, but the full-day kids basically repeat the morning program with new afternoon students. Um, no.
Frustrated, I called my school district and asked if they had any suggestions. A very nice woman directed me to our local park district, which offers a kindergarten enrichment program, taught by licensed teachers, at each one of our local elementary schools. The program isn't cheap, slightly more than what we're paying this year for four days of preschool, but she'll get adjusted to her new school, and they promise that the program's goal isn't day care but actual education. It sounds like the best solution I'm probably going to find, but I'm still not totally satisfied with it.
I started feeling a little crazy about my preoccupation with full-day kindergarten. After all, it's only one year. Was this really about her, or was it about me not wanting her home being bored, frustrated, and probably driving me crazy? But yesterday, Mae, who has definitely picked up on my obsession, proved that I'm on the right track.
"Mom," she said, "Can I ride the bus to kindergarten tomorrow?" I explained to her that she still has another year of preschool, and that once she does start kindergarten, I'd be happy to drive her. "No, I want to take the bus," she responded. "I'm ready to go to school with big kids." I told her that I wouldn't be able to ride the bus with her and big-kid school meant she wouldn't see me from after breakfast until the late afternoon. "It's OK, Mom, my teachers will take care of me, and the bus driver will take care of me, and all my new friends at kindergarten will take care of me. Kindergarten will be so much fun because I love school." And suddenly I realized that my desire for full-day kindergarten isn't about trying to get rid of my daughter; it's about advocating for her.
Question: How Tall Is Game of Thrones Star Gwendoline Christie? Answer: Very
Gwendoline Christie has played badass solider Brienne of Tarth on Game of Thrones since 2012, and even if you don't watch the show, you've likely seen photos of her and thought, "Damn, she's tall." And whether the 38-year-old English actress is towering over her costars at events or slaying the red carpet like a supermodel, Gwendoline's statuesque beauty will absolutely stop you in your tracks. Try Solving This Math Puzzle That Is Making People Go Crazy on Facebook
Ever wanted to tear your hair out and question everything you've ever learned about math? Well, thanks to the website Brain Dare, you can. The company recently posted a math puzzle to its Facebook page that's made the internet divide into two categories based on answers.
Take a look at the puzzle below and determine your own answer.
Did you get 40? Or 96? Though Brain Dare states that 96 is the correct answer, other users are claiming that both can be correct. Brain Dare figured out its answer with multiplication. To begin, you multiply the first number by the second number. For example, 1 x 4 = 4. Then, add that result to the first number and you'll arrive at the answer after the equal sign; for the first line it's 5.
But some people arrived at the answer 40 sans multiplication. Instead, they just added the answer of the first line (5) to the next one. So, 5 + 2 = 7. Add the 5 in the previous answer and you'll get to the answer 12. If you follow it all the way through, you'll arrive at 40.
People in the comments are arguing about which answer is actually right. Some just want Brain Dare to acknowledge that math puzzles such as these can have two answers. The puzzle is clearly extremely popular, considering the post has more than 2,000 reactions, 7,000 comments, and 2,000 shares. At the POPSUGAR offices, we're also torn and finding these two answers as well.
If you want to drive yourself crazy with another brain teaser, try this one involving fruit from a few months ago.
I Finally Found the Perfect Towel - and I'll Never Go Back
Now that my linen closet is stacked to full capacity, it feels safe and only right to share details about the towels I no longer want to live without. Full disclosure: I was first turned onto Hotel Collection's Ultimate MicroCotton Bath Towels ($15) through a PR pitch and had meager expectations, until I actually gave the free towel samples a try. Whoa.
From the first wash cycle to the first time I used them, I immediately noticed how much softer, fluffier, and more absorbent they were than any of the other towels I owned. After six months of heavy use and wash rotation - because who wants to use the crappy towels anymore? - I noticed another thing: they're remarkably resistant to mildewy funk. As someone making due in a tiny bathroom with limited ventilation and towel-hanging real estate, this was a problem for me - even with frequent laundering and vinegar cycles. These, however, are different.
The towels come in 21 shades, ranging from easy neutrals to pretty pastels and a handful of bold jewel tones. I've stocked up on vapor - a warm, pale gray that feels as versatile as white but doesn't show my makeup residue as easily. It's the lighter of the two gray options.
While the original price is $31 for a bath towel, you can score one for $15 on sale, which is what propelled me to finally stock up. Like sheets, buying high-quality towels at a price you can afford is an investment worth making. If you're looking for an affordable upgrade to your daily shower or bath routine, I highly recommend them.

Strong Abs Start With This 7-Minute Workout
Get the printable version of this seven-minute HIIT workout here!
When it comes to high-intensity interval training (HIIT), the pros definitely outweigh the cons. While it may feel unpleasant to push your body to go faster and harder for that short time period, the rewards are worth it: HIIT helps you blast more belly fat, save time, and burn way more calories (even after your workout is long over) than a lower-intensity workout alone. A 2013 study published in the American College of Sports Medicine's Health and Fitness Journal found that a few minutes of training at almost your max can accomplish all of this in way less time than a traditional workout. How much less? Try just seven minutes total.
The ACSM's interval workout consists of 12 exercises, which should be done at an intensity of eight on a scale of 10; each exercise lasts 30 seconds, with a 10-second rest in between. Repeat the circuit if you'd like a longer workout. Keeping the intensity up - and the rest periods short - is key, so keep reading to learn the moves and then get going! You'll need a mat and a chair or bench.
This Cheap Wine From Walmart Is Ranked as One of the Best in the World
If you're one of those people who orders the cheapest glass of wine on the menu because you can't tell the difference (no shame), this news is going to make your day. A $7 bottle of wine sold at Walmart has been ranked as one of the best in the world by Decanter Magazine, which covers wine and spirits. The award-winning red wine is La Moneda Reserva's Malbec, a Chilean wine whose description notes that it has a "deep purple color with violet tints, rounded and velvety tannins, complex plum, fig, and strawberry flavors and excellent length."
The wine earned the title of Platinum Best in Show at last year's Decanter World Wine Awards, where more than 200 experts tasted thousands of wines (blindly!), proving that a wine's price tag is not always associated with its quality. The best part is the wine is now available for the first time at Walmart locations in the US, after previously only being sold by Walmart's UK-based grocery brand, Asda. It's available in more than 500 Walmart locations in the country while supplies last, so be sure to scan your location's wine aisle. If you volunteer to bring the wine to dinner, you'll be able to impress your family and friends with this award-winning bottle - they'll never have to know the cost.
7 Shopping Secrets Straight From an Aldi Employee
Aldi grocery stores may be famous for their exceptionally low price points, but we're finding out that there's a lot more to the company than just a solid deal on bananas! One employee revealed tons of secrets about the grocery store and what it's like to work at Aldi in a Reddit AMA, and we're truly intrigued. During the "Ask Me Anything" conversation, the employee spilled the details on how "fresh" the produce is, why the cashiers are always sitting, and those delicious knockoff Girl Scout Cookies. Read on for all of the juicy Aldi shopping secrets, straight from an employee.
There's a weekly deal called Special Buys.
One Irish Reddit user wondered if they featured a weekly special product like they do at the stores in Ireland, which is often a really random product, like "skiing gear or a chainsaw," and the employee said yes. "It's called Special Buys," they shared about the weekly deals. "We just got a bunch of gardening things in yesterday!" So good to know!
They have amazing coffee!
The employee shared that coffee is their favorite thing to buy at Aldi. "We have amazing coffee," they shared. "My favorite is the Honduras and Peru whole bean (single source, organic, and fair trade) and the regular fair trade medium roast. The chocolate (choceur) is better than almost any common brand you can find. Almost everything there is truly comparable to national brands. It's not just a line. There is a very short list of things I don't like." They also sell great K-Cups for Keurig users.
Why do the cashiers always sit?
One curious Reddit user asked why the cashiers are always sitting, and it has absolutely nothing to do with laziness. "The register chairs are a German thing. I'm not 100% sure why. But I like to think we sit because we bust our asses cleaning and stocking when we aren't ringing."
The knockoff Girl Scout Cookies are delicious.
Someone asked why the near-identical Girl Scout Cookies weren't available in all stores, and the employee shared their incredibly impressive self-control when it comes to the cookies. "They are pretty amazing," the employee said about the cookies. "I don't allow myself to buy them often, though. I'll eat the whole thing by myself in like a day or two."
No, you can't get a discount on squished boxes.
Apparently, it's a running joke between shoppers that no one can ever find baking soda in Aldi stores, but we have an answer! "Baking aisle, top shelf," the employee shared, revealing a tip that might be a letdown to some customers. "No, you can't get a discount on the squished boxes."
Hiring is very competitive.
Yup! When someone asked if their experience at Walmart would help in the application process at Aldi, the employee said yes and opened up about the great number of applicants. "A lot of district managers like to hire people with former management experience (that's part of why I got hired)," they shared. "All experience matters of course, so grocery experience is definitely on your side. My store (not in a very large city) receives several hundred applications a year. Two people were hired in my store in the last 12 months. . . I was one of them. It's a tough job. Everyone does everything, including 6am truck shifts. Keeping the store clean and stocked is a constant struggle when it gets as busy as it does, and when there are only 2-3 working at a time. . . well, you can imagine. That's why it's nice to sit while we ring."
Produce is exceptionally fresh.
With such low prices, many shoppers wonder how "fresh" the produce really is, and the employee reassured the curious Reddit users that even though the produce is less expensive than other grocery stores, it's great quality. "We get produce deliveries every morning," they shared. "The turn around is very fast, so we don't have much waste. We just don't over-order, I guess. It's more typical that we are all out of broccoli by the time we close than it is that we have several extra cases that just end up in the trash." At this employee's location, local restaurant employees will even come in to purchase produce. "We often have local restaurants come in to buy produce to hold them over until deliveries come in. They have mentioned that it's cheaper than their wholesalers. I don't have actual numbers, but bananas and lettuce are big sellers in that area."
But if you're still wondering why shoppers are required to purchase a cart for a quarter, check out more Aldi secrets from another candid employee.
Doritos Just Launched a New Flavor That Combines Buffalo and Cool Ranch!
If you have a hard time deciding on which Doritos flavor to choose, you'll be thrilled by the launch of Doritos Blazin' Buffalo Mix. This brand-new product from Doritos combines four different flavors and shapes in one bag: Blazin' Buffalo & Ranch, Chipotle, Cool Ranch, and Blue Cheese.
Doritos has partnered with the NFL's Matthew Stafford, quarterback for the Detroit Lions, to get both football fans and Doritos fans excited about the new snack. If you purchase a specially marked bag of Blazin' Buffalo Mix and go to the Doritos Mix website, you can "call the play" you think Matthew Stafford will make. If you match his play, you have the chance to win prizes, including VR headsets, ultra HD TVs, and speakers, according to a Doritos spokesperson.
Whether or not you have confidence in predicting quarterbacks' plays or you don't know the difference between an interception and a fumble (is that just me?), I think it's clear that you'll score extra points by bringing these chips to any party. Doritos are the real MVP!
I Tried Disneyland's New Summer Treats - What to Eat, What to Skip
Disneyland has released a new menu to celebrate the return of the Fantasmic! show, including some desserts that I couldn't wait to try for myself. So on my recent trip to Disneyland, I made sure to taste two of the most enticing treats: the s'mores churro and the blackberry beignet. Both of these are twists on classic Disneyland desserts - the churros that are available at food carts throughout the park and the beignets from New Orleans Square - but it's always risky to mess with perfection. So did they pass this Disneyland fan's taste test? Well, yes and no.
Blackberry Beignets
First up were the blackberry beignets, which come in a three-pack ($4.49) or six-pack ($7.49) and are served from the Mint Julep Bar in New Orleans Square. The classic Mickey-shaped beignets get a sparkly upgrade with a dusting of edible star glitter and blackberry-flavored purple sprinkles. They are beautiful, no doubt, but the taste . . . not so much. Look, I love glitter, I would bathe in it if I could, and I've been known to buy all manner of photogenic treats for the sake of the 'gram, but these should be skipped. The sprinkles have a horrible chemical-y aftertaste that ruin an otherwise delicious, warm beignet. And I even ate one with only a fraction of the sprinkles you see in the photo. I ended up giving away the other two in my three-pack, because I couldn't even finish one. In this case, stick to the classic or buy it and just accept the fact that this is created purely for Instagram.
S'mores Churros
Just steps away from the blackberry beignets is the churro cart in New Orleans Square, where you can find the s'mores churros. The beloved Disneyland churro, which is up there with the Dole Whip as a fan favorite, is instead coated in crushed graham crackers and paired with a small cup of marshmallow chocolate dipping sauce. This. Is. Where. It's. At. Or as my husband so eloquently mumbled with a mouthful of the deep-fried goodness, "F*ck the blackberry beignets. These are good." I will say, the churros are slightly less sweet than the classic cinnamon-and-sugar iteration, but I think that's what makes them so tasty, especially dipped in the heaven-sent marshmallow chocolate sauce that we may or may not have drank out of the container once the churro had been devoured . . .

8 Awkward Moments in the Office and How to Avoid Them
PSA: Everybody messes up. Even the seemingly perfect people who always have it together make a blunder here and there. But it's how you make up for your mistakes that matters - and this definitely applies to those work-related missteps. And even if it's not YOUR error or fault, you could be affected by someone else's miscalculation. Ahead are eight awkward moments that may have happened to you (or very well could happen to you) and how to recover.
Awkward moment: You cry at work.
Whether you had a horrible meeting or just a very long, very stressful day, it's perfectly normal to shed a few tears in front of important people without meaning to.
The fix: "You should excuse yourself to a quiet spot where you can be alone to calm your thoughts - a simple 'Excuse me for a few minutes, I will be back' is fine," said Hallie Crawford, career coach and founder of HallieCrawford.com. "Stop thinking the thought that is upsetting you, and focus on something else besides that fear or frustration, if possible. Look out the window, look down at your paper as if you are reading your notes, and just breathe. Relax and think of something else that relaxes you."
Awkward moment: You get hit on by a co-worker.
So the dude four cubicles down wants your number . . . and you're simply not into it.
The fix: "If someone is hitting on you at work and making you feel uncomfortable, politely tell them that you're not interested," said career and life coach Jenn Dewall. "If they continue to pursue you, reach out to a mentor or boss and get their feedback on the next steps you should take based on your company culture." And remember, you can always file a sexual harassment report with HR if the advances get out of hand.
Awkward moment: You get drunk at an office event.
Your company threw a huge party, and you went a little nuts at the free minibar. In your tipsy stupor, you may have stepped on a few toes (literally).
The fix: "If you get too drunk and crazy in front of your boss or executives, have a short conversation with them apologizing for your conduct," DeWall said. "It's better to apologize than to have massive anxiety and self-judgment over your behavior. Apologize and move on."
Awkward moment: Your boss catches you wasting time on social media.
Work's been slow lately, so you peruse the likes of Facebook and Twitter to pass the time. At most companies, this is a no-no.
The fix: "It would be obvious to cover it up," Crawford said. "And the course of action you take depends on what kind of relationship you have with your boss. But you can try to diffuse the situation. If you are watching the newest Chewbacca Mom video on the internet when your boss comes up, invite him to watch it with you. Then close the browser and get back to work. You might share a good laugh! Or if you're not that close with your boss, let him or her know you were taking a break for a moment between tasks to clear your head, so he or she understands it's not a regular thing."
Awkward moment: Your co-worker overshares personal information.
You're friends with your teammate, but you're not quite as close as she thinks you are. You don't want to know every little detail about her life outside of work . . . but she's always filling you in anyway.
The fix: "Remember that everyone should be able to feel like themselves at work and sharing some personal information is a way to build a good relationship with your co-workers," Crawford said. "However, generally it is best to avoid topics of politics, religion, and morality in the workplace. One should also avoid off-color jokes. If you are in a conversation that steers in one of those directions, simply try to change the subject."
Awkward moment: You hit "Reply All" in an email.
It's insanely easy to accidentally respond to the entire company on a chain email, since the buttons are right next to each other - especially if you happen to be in a rush.
The fix: "Typically I recommend not responding back to the group unless it's a small email group," DeWall said. "If you do respond, simply post 'Disregard my previous email' in the subject heading so people know they can delete it."
Awkward moment: You kiss a co-worker after too many drinks.
Whoopsies - you made out with the sales girl two rows down after a few 5 p.m. margaritas.
The fix: "This one is so awkward because offices act like big schools," millennial career expert Jill Jacinto said. "People always love gossiping about who is into who and who is hooking up. And if you leave with a co-worker at a happy hour or give them a smooch in front of others, [you should] get ready to be the brunt of their jokes. Instead, stick to a two-drink-max policy, and know when it is time to leave the party next time."
Awkward moment: Your colleagues catch you job searching.
You're unhappy with your current gig, so you browse Indeed on your company laptop for a new lead. One word: don't.
The fix: "So you got caught printing your résumé or someone spotted a job listing site on your computer monitor," Jacinto said. "Never print your résumé at the office. Everything you print is tracked by your computer system. This is the same with your browsing history on your computer. Invest in an at-home printer and make time to job search off hours." And if the damage is already done, consider scheduling a meeting with your manager to discuss why you're thinking of leaving in the first place. He or she may be able to provide a solution to the dissatisfaction you're feeling.
Overall advice: "Awkward moments at the office are unavoidable because we're all human," said Pocket Mentor Founder and CEO Caren Merrick. The best way to deal with an awkward situation is to treat the person the way you'd want to be treated and to remember that whatever it is, we've all done it, or something like it! Most awkward moments aren't fatal and, often, with time, become some of the funniest stories to share." Cheers to that!
What Really Can Go Wrong When You Rent Your Place on Airbnb
Does opening up your home to strangers sound scary? I'm here to tell you that's it's worth the leap of faith. For the past year, I've rented my San Francisco appartment on Airbnb when I head out of town, and I've become a true believer. I love that it inspired me to become more of a minimalist. And it's made me trust in basic human decency, since all of my guests so far have been friendly and respectful of my home. It also helps pay for my vacations.
Despite all the upsides, let's be real: there's no such thing as free money. Being an Airbnb host takes work. If you're considering it, here are the nine potential downsides you should be aware of.
It Can Add Stress to Your Vacation
Renting your home while you're on vacation means you're not 100 percent on vacation.
Renting your home while you're on vacation means you're not 100 percent on vacation. You have to be prepared to send check-in and check-out messages and answer any questions that might come up. Add in a time change, and there can be some real dread when you wake up in the morning to check your phone, hoping nothing went wrong while you were sleeping.
For me, the small inconveniences are worth it, and I always let a guest know if I'll be offline for an extended period. In addition, I am sure to send as many details ahead of time and leave an extensive booklet of information in our home to proactively get ahead of questions. While I haven't used it, Airbnb also has an option to add a "co-host" to help manage your account and bookings while you're out of town.
You Can Never Predict What Might Go Wrong
Regardless of whether you handle all the communication with guests from afar, you definitely need to have someone on the ground ready to respond to any unforeseen issues should they come up. For me, this person is a local family member. A couple of times, I've had problems that required their attention, including a shower that malfunctioned and heating that went out! Luckily, my on-call savior was able to fix them with little more than a wrench and an extra set of batteries.
You Could Get End Up in a Legal Predicament
As a host, it's on you to learn your local landlord-tenant laws.
This hasn't happened to me, but I've read horror stories about vacation rental squatters. One guest in Palm Springs, for example, refused to leave (or pay!) after his 44-day booking and even threatened to sue the host for violating his tenant rights if she turned off the utilities.
As a host, it's on you to learn your local landlord-tenant laws. Often these include additional rights for any guests who stay more than 30 days. To make sure I knew what I was getting myself into legally, I called my local Rent Board to find out what my rights and responsibilities were as a short-term landlord. I also reviewed Airbnb's built-in host insurance policy, which has $1 million in liability coverage. For example, if a guest breaks their wrist after slipping on the rug, the insurance should cover any potential damages.
You Might Violate Complicated Regulations
I wanted to make sure I did everything by the book before renting out my place. So I researched my city's rules and applied for a permit, which was very time-consuming. Thanks to the rules, I have to file regular paperwork and make sure I stay within the 90-day annual short-term rental limit. If I forget to stay on top of this, I could pay expensive fees.
You Could Owe More Taxes
You must declare the money you make on Airbnb as income, and depending on your individual tax situation, this could have implications in terms of how much you owe come April. In San Francisco, I also have to pay extra business taxes each year, which amount to about 1 percent of the total value of all the possessions in my home, including furniture and appliances.
Kids Can Leave Their Marks
Our house isn't kid-unfriendly. But since we don't have kids ourselves, we've noticed that they can leave a mark. One time, we came home to permanent marker inexplicably drawn on a window (it came off easily, thankfully). And our downstairs neighbors have complained about the constant patter of running toddlers. To make things easier for everyone, we decided to not rent to groups with kids ages 2 to 12 years old.
Your Neighbors May Lose Patience
It's not just the kids that can wear on your neighbors. We've had them complain about guest parking and also music late at night (although, it did not actually come from our 60-year-old guests that time). We've found that the best thing to do is to respond to their concerns with real action, like no longer renting to kids, and by making sure they know the lines of communication are open, and they can contact us at any time with a big or small annoyance. We've also left a sign at our front door, asking guests to remove their shoes. It seems to be working out.
You'll Notice Regular Wear and Tear Sooner
The extra money we make will more than cover a new kitchen item or eventual paint refresh.
Usually, our place feels just like we left it when we come home. Over time, however, I have noticed some scratched cooking pans or scuffed walls. I try not to be uptight about it though, since I know the extra money we make will more than cover a new kitchen item or eventual paint refresh down the line.
Your Place Could Get Badly Damaged
Beyond small nicks and scratches, there is always the possibility that you end up in a nightmare scenario: a totally trashed home. That recently happened in London, where a first-time host had trouble getting reimbursed by Airbnb for about $8,000 in damages caused by a 200-person rager. She eventually succeeded. Before you host, it's important to understand Airbnb's insurance policy, as well as any renters' or homeowners' policy you might have. And keep in mind that the odds of a horrible tenant are low.
Renting the home you regularly live in on Airbnb is a "lifestyle." You have to keep things organized and guest-friendly and be ready to roll with whatever may come up while you're gone. But if you can handle that, the benefits of getting paid while you're on vacation are worth it. Take it from me.
This Illegal Hike in Hawaii Is Nicknamed the "Stairway to Heaven" For Good Reason
One of Hawaii's most epic hikes, known as the Haiku Stairs, is famous for its stunning views and illegal climb. Despite being a steep 3,922-step hike - and not to mention dangerous since becoming damaged by a storm in 2015 - the ladder remains a popular destination among hikers and visitors.
The "Stairway to Heaven" is an appropriate nickname as some of the peaks even tower above the clouds and offer incredible sights of the island of Oahu below. The almost-vertical ladder, which reaches the top of Pu'u Keahi a Kahoe, has a height of over 2,500 feet. Although it was built in 1943 during World War II, it wasn't until 1987 when the Haiku Stairs was deemed off limits to the public. But according to Instagram photos, it still looks like people trespass every day to experience the notorious hike for themselves.
Though we don't encourage anybody to endanger their lives or even risk receiving a fine, we do have to admit that the Stairway to Heaven looks pretty damn cool.

This Mom's Important Message to Another Mom After Witnessing What Her Kids Did at a Water Park
Having to stand in line before getting the chance to go on a water slide can be difficult for kids, but patiently waiting your turn can be even harder if you have autism.
Stephanie Skaggs understood what that struggle would be like for her 5-year-old daughter, Baylee, and actively worked with the child on practicing waiting her turn. However, after witnessing what happened when her daughter was cut in line multiple times, Stephanie was left speechless - and wrote a powerful message to the other mother.
Stephanie explained that while kids jumping in line isn't usually a huge deal, it is for her daughter. Not because she has to wait longer but because of how upsetting it is for Baylee when the steps of the routine that she just learned are now out of whack. "[Coping with unexpected change] is one of the more difficult skills to practice and especially in public when people, especially other children, do not understand why she is reacting the way she does," Stephanie wrote on Facebook. "I dread it. Not what she will do but what other people will."
However, as Stephanie was bracing herself for Baylee's reaction to this drastic change in the process she was working so hard to understand, another little girl looked up at Stephanie and said, "She can go ahead of me." Stephanie was left baffled by this child's kind gesture because Baylee hadn't even had a chance to react or get upset before this little girl offered Baylee her spot. "I felt like maybe she could tell by the way I had been talking to her that she had special needs," Stephanie continued. "It was so sweet and I told her what a sweet girl she was. And we moved on."
After a day spent in the busy water park, Baylee and Stephanie found themselves in the same position - another child cut in front of Baylee and jeopardized her routine. This time, a young boy was in front and immediately offered Baylee his place before she had a chance to shed a single tear. "Again, I praised his good behavior and kindness and we went ahead, and I was struck that two different children would be so intuitive and kind," Stephanie reflected. "Like most autistic children, Baylee does not LOOK any different than any other child. And it's not really immediately obvious by her behavior either. It takes some observation and usually children their age don't realize she has autism."
Later, Stephanie spotted both of the children together and it all made sense - they were siblings and their kind actions weren't a coincidence; the same mother raised them. "When I came to you and told you about my experience with your kids and told you that they were super kids and you are doing a great job, you said 'I don't know about that.'" Stephanie wrote to their mother. "Well, mom, you are. A small gesture like theirs may not seem like much. But I promise it was."
As a parent of a child with autism, Stephanie says that the only thing she knows to expect is the worry that comes when she thinks about her daughter's future. But this mom reassured her that some children are being raised to not immediately reject someone who is different. And even if this mom doesn't realize what an amazing job she is doing and what a big deal instilling those qualities in her children is, Stephanie is determined to show her that it does matter.
"Sure your children's kindness helped in that moment to avoid a meltdown, and that is kind of a big deal for kids on the spectrum, but I will tell you what is an even bigger deal though, and that is that it gave me some HOPE!" she wrote. "When I looked at those sweet little faces, filled with pride as I praised them, it made me happy to know that more moms are raising their children the way you are!"
