To Speed Up Your Runs, Should You Walk?

It sounds counterintuitive that adding walking breaks to your runs will result in faster times, but the run-walk theory may be exactly what you need to add miles and drop time.

Why it's hard for runners to incorporate.

Whether you've been running for years or are training for your first 5K, you probably have already learned the hard way that it's a runner's ego that keeps runners believing that true success is covering the entire distance without walking. But at what cost? If adding walking intervals to your run helps you feel better, recover faster, and even hit a personal record, why is it viewed so negatively to do a run-walk program?

Not convinced? Science and experience both indicate that adding consistent, disciplined walk breaks from the beginning of your run will lead to more success in your training and racing.

Why it works.

  1. Your body fatigues less when you add walking breaks. If you wait until your body is already tired to take a walk break, you're already behind. Adding walk breaks from the beginning of your run when you're still feeling energized ensures that you'll conserve more energy for longer. Running requires more effort and energy from the body than walking, so rewarding your muscles with a short walk break while they are still fresh keeps the body feeling fresher longer.
  2. Your mind fatigues less. If you're starting a long run, you're probably already focused on how you'll manage to run for six or more continuous miles on a Saturday morning. Instead of focusing on the seemingly insurmountable distance from the start, planning to do a run-walk allows your mind to focus only on the interval you're in. So instead of hours, your mind can focus on covering only two to three minutes at a time. Easy, right? You can run for two or three minutes over and over again, even on the days you don't think you can run six miles.
  3. Shorter recovery. Taking walk breaks allows your joints a break from the constant jarring of running. Less strain on your legs throughout your run allows for quicker recovery, letting you get back to running more quickly without feeling sore for the entire day. The dip in your heart rate during a walk interval also allows the endorphins produced naturally during a run to better collect, leaving your mind and body with a longer-lasting runner's high.
  4. Take in food and water without spilling. If you're trying to cover your entire run without a walk break, you've likely spilled more water or gel than you've consumed. Consuming carbohydrates on runs lasting more than one hour is essential for your body to be able to cover the distance. Plan to grab a quick sip or bite during your walk break to make the most of your time and fuel.

Do it right.

If you're ready to experiment with your own run-walk formula, take the time to make a plan that works for you.

  • Experiment with the duration of both the run and walk break. Individualizing your run-walk ratio will allow you to determine what ratio makes you feel faster and stronger.
  • During your walk breaks, walk slowly enough to allow yourself to catch your breath and recover, but quickly enough that you don't lose ground or waste time. Remember the walk breaks are intended to make you fresher and faster, so try to avoid either walking too quickly or coming to a complete stop.
  • Set an app on your phone or on your GPS watch to alert you when it's time to run and when it's time to walk so you don't find yourself staring at a clock while you should be enjoying a race or training run. Avoid counting the seconds in your head so you can focus on your form and performance.

Ready to run (and walk)? Leave your preconceptions about what it means to be a "runner" behind and experiment with the plan that makes you happier, stronger, and faster!

There's a Very Good Reason the Queen Wears Bright Colors

Queen Elizabeth II has always been known for wearing bold colors, but this love of rainbow shades isn't just a personal preference. There's actually a very practical, and quite touching, reason the woman Prince Harry calls his "boss" wears shades of fuchsia, lemon, and royal blue for royal engagements. According to her daughter-in-law Sophie, Countess of Wessex, the queen sports the bright hues to ensure that members of the public stand a chance of seeing her through the crowds. "She needs to stand out for people to be able to say 'I saw the queen'," Sophie explained in the documentary The Queen at 90. "Don't forget that when she turns up somewhere, the crowds are two, three, four, 10, 15 deep, and someone wants to be able to say they saw a bit of the queen's hat as she went past." If she wore muted colors, like everyone around her, people would stand less of a chance of spotting her from afar. See some perfect examples of when she's stood out from the crowd in our gallery, then get a crash course in what all those royal facial expressions mean.

An Algorithm Can Tell If You're Depressed or Not Just by Looking at Your Instagram Photos

The filter you choose for an Instagram photo might be saying a whole lot more about your mental health than you know. In a new study, a team of researchers created an algorithm that can sift through your photos on the app and predict whether or not you're depressed. The algorithm was correct 70 percent of time and took into account a variety of factors in order to come up with the diagnosis.

The algorithm uses machine learning to learn what makes up a "depressed photo" based on owners of Instagram accounts who had been diagnosed with depression. Though the sample size was small - the study only looked at 166 Instagram users - the algorithm was then able to detect potentially depressed individuals within a set of new users. Specifically the algorithm learned that depressed people usually had photos that had a darker tone, used the Inkwell filter, had fewer individuals in the photos themselves, and had fewer "likes." Happier people, on the other hand, loved using the Valenica filter and included more people in their photos.

While this type of research may seem superfluous, it's important to note that the 70 percent success rate of the algorithm's diagnosis dramatically outperforms the 42 percent success rate that regular doctors have. However, the researchers do express that the study shouldn't be used broadly on anyone's Instagram account. "No guarantee that this would translate to just the average Instagram user," Chris Danforth, the author of the study, said to BuzzFeed. Instead, the researchers suggest that the algorithm could be used as a "blueprint" to screen for depression "in an increasingly digitalized society."
For now, if you do see someone post a troubling post on Instagram, you can anonymously report them. Then, the next time this person opens up an app, they'll see different ways they can seek help, like calling a hotline.

If you or a loved one are in need of any help, the Anxiety and Depression Association of America has several resources here.

Did Sansa and Arya's Game of Thrones Reunion Hint at Jon Snow's Eventual Death?

As the battle for the Iron Throne continues and the White Walker threat gets closer to the people of Westeros, there's a Game of Thrones question I'm kind of afraid to ask: is Jon Snow going to die - again? Like, for real this time? As one half of the ice-and-fire equation, he obviously has a large role to play, and theories suggest that he'll lead the fight against the White Walkers. But I'm starting to worry that he won't survive the fight.

A single line in the latest episode might hint at Jon Snow's fate. The moment comes during Sansa and Arya Stark's Winterfell reunion as Sansa talks about their siblings' whereabouts. She mentions her reunion with Jon Snow, acknowledging that he'll probably be more excited to see Arya than he'd been to see her. Here's what she says:

"I hope he comes back soon. I remember how happy he was to see me, and when he sees you, his heart will probably stop."

Heart will stop? HEART will STOP? I know I'm taking her line literally, but crazier things have happened on this show (understatement) and it wouldn't be the first time that words carried more meaning than you might think at first.

What if he, I don't know, first sees Arya on the battlefield and throws himself in front of a White Walker to save her, sacrificing himself? What if Arya goes after Littlefinger and Jon shows up, sees what's happening, intervenes, and dies? Meanwhile, if he dies again, will Melisandre bring him back to life again? Can my OWN heart handle seeing him die again?

When people are brought back to life by the Lord of Light, it's because they still have a role to play. Jon Snow's role could be to bring his family back together, or spread the message of the White Walkers, or team up with Daenerys Targaryen to defeat them. But once his destiny is fulfilled, then what? He's . . . free to die again?

Listen, I honestly hope I'm wrong and I'm reading into that moment too closely. I hope none of the above takes place and he'll be among the last characters standing. Or, even better, sitting. On the Iron Throne. Fingers crossed.

I F*cking Hate Brushing My Teeth, So I Tried Unicorn Toothpaste to Spice Things Up

While I relish most of my nighttime beauty rituals (I consider removing eye makeup genuinely fun!), brushing my teeth just really pisses me off. Life is short, and two minutes is a long time to spend on one boring task. I believe the quote is, "Carpe diem, seize the day," not "Carpe diem, go brush your teeth." I always try and cheat my way out of the task, which, one night, prompted my exasperated roommate to sigh, "You are SUCH a child!"

But back when I was actually a child (by definition, not practice), toothpaste just seemed to taste better. That's because my mother was fooling us young 'uns with children's flavors such as Bubble Mint, Strawberry Splash, and Cookies and Cream. Now the closest thing I get to a flavor is "For Sensitive Teeth." Not exactly the most delicious-sounding name on the market. So maybe I didn't hate toothpaste, I had just fallen out of love with it. Maybe I just needed a frisky new flavor to spice things up.

I believe the quote is, "Carpe diem, seize the day," not "Carpe diem, go brush your teeth."

When I read the customer reviews for Oral Essentials Strawberry Kids' Toothpaste ($9), I threw up my hands and yelled, "FLAVA FLAVE," because I knew I'd found my flavor of love. First, it had a rainbow tube. Yup, Team Unicorn has infiltrated our hair color and eye makeup, and I will gladly surrender my mouth to the trend. Oral Essentials immediately became my "unicorn toothpaste," as its tub features the majestic creature, calling me over into the land of oral health and happiness.

But there were also the reviews. As one satisfied consumer wrote, "My 4 year-old used to protest [brushing her teeth], but now she jumps up and does it with excitement!!" If unicorn toothpaste was good enough for the choicest toddlers, it had me sold. But was I going to f*ck up my teeth?

I hit up NYC-based cosmetic dentist Dr. Gregg Lituchy of Lowenberg, Lituchy & Kantor, who greenlit my little experiment . . . sort of. According to Dr. Lituchy, "Adult toothpaste tends to have a higher percentage of fluoride than kids' toothpaste," since the chemical compound has been shown to be harmful for children. I could make up for the lack of fluoride by using floss and nonalcoholic mouthwash, and these products "have enough fluoride to prevent decay and cavities." Per Dr. Lituchy's insistence, and good common sense, I always follow up with floss and Act Total Care Mouthwash ($6), which I've used since before I can remember (it's probably my longest relationship to date).

Plus, without knowing it, I'd secretly picked a champion kids' toothpaste. There's a reason that lil' unicorn on the packaging looks so proud - Oral Essentials doesn't contain sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). "The harshness of this chemical has been proven to create microscopic damage to the oral tissue that lines the inside of your mouth, causing canker sores." I am very glad that Dr. Lituchy warned me of this ingredient, because I don't need my toothpaste to give me canker sores. I already get those from eating potato chips, thank you very much.

I decided to pair my toddlers' toothpaste with a sophisticated toothbrush, because that's what grown-ups do. The Boie Toothbrush ($12) just might be the sexiest oral health product on the market (almost to an unnecessary extent, but it is so extra that I'm into it). This adult brush seems like the mature ying to my childish yang of unicorn paste.

With rainbow-high hopes, I tried the toothpaste. When I first started brushing, I almost did a spit take, because the damn stuff tastes exactly like Jolly Ranchers. Like, prime Blue Raspberry Jolly Ranchers, not any of that Grape nonsense. I'll go so far as to say that I would seriously squeeze this sh*t over ice cream like it was hot fudge if I could.

On my very first night of this experiment, I brushed my teeth for two and a half minutes without even checking my timer once. I've been hooked since then, even becoming that annoyingly perfect person who brushes mornings and nights and touches up in-between. I even poured it into a portable holder for contacts so I could use it on a plane at 35,000 feet.

Since unicorn toothpaste has cured my decades-long grudge against brushing my teeth and sports the cutest packaging ever while doing so, I'd say this product is nothing short of a fantasy. It's also further proof that in the everlasting battle between mermaids and unicorns, my side has the upper hand - er, hoof. Your move, Team Mermaid.

The Beautiful Spot Every Traveler Absolutely Must Visit While in Budapest

Among the many reasons to visit Budapest, Hungary, there's one that stands out the most. Known as the "City of Baths" and "Spa City," Budapest is particularly unique for being the only remaining capital city in the world with healing thermal waters. Because the city sits on almost 125 thermal springs, there's a variety of bath houses to soak at during your trip.

Aside from the ever popular Szechenyi Baths, the Gellért Baths are also worth the visit, with their breathtaking cathedral-like architecture. The bath and spa complex, part of the famous Hotel Gellért, offers 12 different pools, including an indoor swimming pool and thermal bath and an outdoor wave pool and thermal pool. Even the swimming pool is naturally warm at around 80 degrees.

The hot spring water is said to have therapeutic properties (calcium, magnesium, hydrogen-carbonate, sulphate-chloride, and sodium) that can aid with arthritis, circulatory problems, joint diseases, and more.

Because the US dollar is strong in Hungary, spa fees are especially affordable. General admission for adults is $18 to $20 depending on day of use. Guests can also enjoy a range of spa services including massages and red wine baths. Even the most expensive treatment ("Lavender Dream") is at a reasonable $69, compared to the standard entry fee at Iceland's Blue Lagoon ($54).

So if you ever find yourself in Budapest, make sure you don't miss Gellért! Check out what the baths look like.

Here's Exactly How to Carb Load - Straight From a Dietitian

Carb loading can be extremely confusing, especially if you're new to sports nutrition - do you just eat a bucket of pasta the night before a half-marathon and hope for the best?! How do you properly increase these necessary macros without sabotaging your diet or messing with your metabolism? What day do you start the loading, and most importantly, when do we get spaghetti?

We consulted Lori Zanini RD, CDE, who is an expert in all things carbohydrates and blood-sugar levels. The creator of For the Love of Diabetes online training program and dietetic brains behind the Tone It Up nutrition program knows a thing or two about optimizing carb intake before intense and sustained exercise without compromising your health.

Why Is It Important?

Short answer: your body needs the extra energy.

Skimping on the carbs before an endurance event (something that will last more than 90 minutes) will leave you feeling tired, sore, and struggling to concentrate and could lead to even worse problems. "The goal of carbohydrate loading is to utilize glycogen stores in the muscle and liver," Lori told POPSUGAR.

"This is the long-term carbohydrate storage where the body taps into in order to keep energy levels stable and to provide enough energy for long-duration performance." Read: this is the extra fuel you need to complete your race or event. Don't let your body run on empty! "By consuming enough carbohydrates prior to a long run/endurance event, athletes are setting themselves up for success rather than fatigue and impaired concentration during their event."

Is It Safe For Everyone?

Short answer: yes.

"If an endurance athlete does not have diabetes or prediabetes, then it is fine to carb load," said Lori. "The insulin their body produces will naturally keep blood sugar levels regulated." If you fall into the diabetic/prediabetic category, it's best to consult your doctor or dietitian before adding in extra carbohydrates. "Carb loading is also effective and beneficial for those with prediabetes/diabetes as long as they have good blood sugar control overall," she said. "And they will want to pay extra attention to choosing high-fiber carbs and this with a lower glycemic index."

What's the Timeline?

Short answer: two days before your race.

Surprise! A huge bowl of pasta the night before is actually not the ideal time frame for carb loading. "Optimal carbohydrate loading period is between 36 to 48 hours before a race," Lori told POPSUGAR. This means either dinnertime two nights before your race or a big breakfast or brunch two days prior.

Here's an exact method: the "carbohydrate loading technique consists of three to seven days of a high-carbohydrate diet (with an average of 60 percent of calories coming from carbohydrates), combined with one or two days of reduced exercise volume," Lori explained.

So a good rule is to give yourself a week - not just a night - of increased carbohydrate intake to help your body adjust. This all happens while you're tapering (reducing your exercise) for the last two days before your endurance event.

"According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, exercise taper and a carbohydrate-rich diet of seven to 12 grams of carbohydrates per kilogram of body weight per day can normalize muscle glycogen levels within 24 hours, while extending this to 48 hours can achieve glycogen supercompensation (where muscles are able to hold a greater amount of glycogen than they normally would be able to)."

The Dos and Don'ts

Do:

  • Test different carb sources. Not everyone digests pasta in the same way. "Trial carbohydrates sources before practice to monitor tolerance and comfort to different carbohydrate sources," said Lori. This will help you "create the best plan for you before a race."
  • Increase carb content based on your weight. "In preparation for events that are 90 minutes or more of sustained/intermittent exercise, consume 10 to 12 grams per kilogram of bodyweight of carbohydrates per day." For example, if you weigh 60 kilograms, eat 600 to 720 grams of carbohydrates while carb loading.
  • Pair with protein. Lori suggests balancing the carb load with some protein to help nourish your muscles and keep you full.
  • Eat smaller meals vs. one big one. "During a carbohydrate-loading phase, small, frequent carbohydrate-rich meals combine with lean proteins will be best compared to big portions of carbohydrates at one or two sittings," she told POPSUGAR.
  • Choose the right carbs. The healthiest way to carb load? "Focus on low/medium glycemic index choices during the carbohydrate-loading phase," she said. This includes "oatmeal, sweet potatoes, fruits, etc." She notes that "As you get closer to the hours of competition [i.e., race day], lower-fiber carbohydrate choices may be better tolerated and help top off energy stores."

Don't:

  • Try anything new before race day. This is a cardinal, age-old rule. A tale as old as time, if you will. "Don't try a new fuel source before an important race or tournament," said Lori. "Make sure to trial different foods ahead of time and see which works best for your body and particular sport."
  • Load up on high-fat, high-protein, or high-fiber foods. "Don't consume foods high in fat, protein, or fiber before the race as this may cause gastrointestinal issues during the event."
  • Use sugar as your carb source. Quality over quantity, you guys! "Don't just load up on sugar," Lori warned. "While ensuring athletes are meeting carbohydrate needs, our goal is to still focus on consuming quality fuel sources such as quinoa, oatmeal, whole-wheat pasta, sweet potatoes, and fruits."

Race on!

Ashley Graham Has a Replacement For the Term "Plus-Size" - So Please Use It

Who - we mean, really, WHO?! - would not want to dress Ashley Graham for the Met Gala? Not only is she a lovely person, hilarious, and easy to work with (Trust me, I hung out with Ashley at my own office), but she is also beautiful and has noteworthy taste.

In 2017, she showed up to the ball in one of our favorite looks of the night: a red curve-hugging H&M dress, covered with floral appliqué. She knew exactly what to do with her hair (slicked back to show off the elements of the dress), and she wore her outfit with confidence. But Ashley was held back from the event in 2016 - though she had already become a prominent figure in the industry - simply because no one would dress her.

She revealed this to NY Magazine in a profile that appears in the August 2017 issue, but it's not the only quote that stuck with us when we read the feature. Ahead, you'll find Ashley's replacement term for "plus-size," how she feels about being famous for the number in her jeans, and why she thinks she's one of the only models in a minority group to skyrocket to fame.

I Own a Pair of $14 Leggings From Costco . . . and I Don't Hate Them

I'm not kidding when I say I'm about to reveal one of my deepest, darkest secrets. I'm the girl whose first "splurge" was on Lululemon's Wunder Under Pant (that I still own five years later!) and who swears by pieces from Nike and Outdoor Voices. I'm a firm believer that when it comes to athletic clothes, it's better to invest, because I've seen many a pair of discount leggings rip on the inner thigh or unravel at the ankles.

But when all is said and done, I own a pair of $14 leggings from Costco . . . and I don't hate them.

For as long as I can remember, I've been stealing clothes from my mom. From socks to dresses to pairs of boots, nothing is safe. But the real treasure trove is her athletic clothes drawer.

My mom works out almost every day and thus justifies the overflowing drawer of sports bras, yoga pants, leggings (that she never wears), and tanks. Every time I'm home, I rush up to her room and immediately begin my five-finger-discount shopping spree in her drawer.

This has been going on for so long that I know exactly which pieces I can get away with taking, and 99 percent of the time, it's leggings.

It was while looting my mom's athletic clothes drawer that she offered me a pair of black cotton leggings with a simple marble-like design. I tried them on and was so happy to find that not only was the material super soft, but it also hugged all the right places and sat perfectly right above my ankle. I've spent a lot of money shortening and tapering leggings in the past, so I was excited to take on a pair that needed no work at all. I didn't recognize the logo on the back but happily sported them to the barre class my mom and I attended together later that day.

A few months after adopting the leggings from my mom, I decided I was ready to invest in a second pair. They'd lasted through spinning classes, hot yoga, and even boxing. No holes, no rips, and they sprung back into shape perfectly after a wash.

I had disappointed so many complimenters who inquired on where these trendy marble leggings were from, so when I called up my mom to ask, you could imagine my surprise when she said, "Yeah, they were like $13.99 at Costco," like it was NBD. She had literally thrown them in the cart on top of a carton of cotton candy grapes and that was that!

Now, I'm not trying to suggest that my Costco leggings stand up to my higher-end favorites, but for $14, it's worth taking a second look after you hit up the avocado aisle.

Set Your Alarms NOW to See the Biggest Solar Eclipse in Your Lifetime

Tell everyone you're busy on Aug. 21, 2017, because you won't want to miss the next total solar eclipse. It may be a year ahead, but mark your calendars now - the last total eclipse to be visible across the United States was in 1918, according to Ars Technica.

Those in states from Oregon to South Carolina will be able to view the total eclipse, while the rest of America will see at least a part of it. NASA's interactive map lets you hover over your location for the times you can catch the event. In total, the greatest duration will be about two minutes and 40 seconds.

We can't wait!

The Golden Company Could Turn the Tide of the War on Game of Thrones

The war between the two queens is heating up (literally) on Game of Thrones. After the Loot Train Battle in "The Spoils of War," Cersei is dealing with her first major defeat, but it may not be a total failure for the Mad Queen in training. If Randyll Tarly didn't misspeak, then the gold the Lannister army takes from Highgarden is already safely within the walls of King's Landing. Assuming Tarly is right, then Cersei just got the influx of gold she needs to pay her debts and borrow enough money from the Iron Bank to hire the Golden Company. What is the Golden Company, you ask? They are a sellsword company said to be 10,000 strong. Based in Essos, this band of exiles is known for never breaking a contract. Cersei wants to use the money she plans on borrowing from the Iron Bank to hire out these men and bring them to Westeros in order to replenish her dwindling army.

Now that the Lannisters have lost even more soldiers, the Golden Company could be the key to keeping the devious twins in the game. In the books, the group of sellswords is made up of highly trained men willing to fight for anyone with enough money to pay them, and they take their job seriously. While sellswords in general are thought to be oathbreakers by nature (that's why Stannis declines to hire the company when Ser Davos suggests it in season four), the Golden Company takes great pride in their reputation. As a result, they keep their word once money exchanges hands. But just because they've never broken a contract before doesn't mean they never will, especially when it comes time to fight for Cersei.

The Lannister queen is making a smart move by seeking out the Golden Company, there's no doubt about that. They are a ready-made army of trained men with battle experience. And since they are based in the Free Cities, they may have experience fighting against Dothraki Screamers, something the young soldiers of Westeros are clearly not prepared to do. One potential downside is that she could be seen as bringing a foreign threat into the land, just like she accuses Daenerys of doing, but after the Loot Train Battle, her remaining allies will surely prefer the Golden Company's services over losing more of their own men to dragon fire. As a group, these sellswords could give Cersei major leverage, but there's one thing the queen isn't taking into consideration: the Golden Company could be swayed to Daenerys's side.

Targaryen bastard Aegor Rivers is the founder of the Golden Company. Many years before the events of Game of Thrones, he leaves Westeros and gathers the exiled knights and lords seeking sanctuary in the Free Cities to form a company of sellswords who stay true to their word. Even though this current iteration of the group never met Aegor, their company would not exist if not for a Targaryen. This could work in Daenerys's favor, especially when Jorah is factored in.

Presumably, the newly cured Jorah is making his way back to Daenerys, and his timing couldn't be better. Way back in season four, the Dragon Queen chastises Jorah for being suspicious of Daario's sellsword past because Jorah himself once worked for the Golden Company. That's right; before he is enlisted to spy on Daenerys and later switches to her side, Jorah worked for the most famous group of sellswords in the known world. Whether or not the knight left on good terms remains to be seen, but his passion for his queen could compel him to intercede on her behalf with his old band of brothers.

A dragon is responsible for founding the Golden Company, and even gold may not be enough to make them fight against the last Targaryen in the world (at least, the last one anyone knows about). Granted, their entire reputation is built on not breaking their contracts, but in the books, they compromise their motto to fight alongside a Targaryen who isn't a part of the show - Rhaegar's supposed son, Aegon. Don't put it past the Game of Thrones writers to re-create this story on the show with Daenerys standing in for Aegon.

Whether the Golden Company fights for Cersei or Daenerys, look for this crew of sellswords to turn the tide of the war for whichever woman is lucky enough to contract them. A ready-made army with 10,000 fighters is bound to be formidable, whether they're fighting alongside dragons or against them.

Fourth Grader Invents Genius Device to Help Parents Remember Their Kid Is in the Car

We're constantly looking for simple tactics in life to help our memories - leaving the car keys in the refrigerator to remember to take leftovers or Post-its all over the house with various reminders - but this fourth grade girl just invented a genius device to make sure our babies are never forgotten in the back of the car. Sophie Rapson's mom Jenny dreaded the "Invention Convention" at school each and every year, but the night before her 9-year-old daughter's idea was due, they brainstormed about some of the biggest global problems that needed solving.

Sophie and Jenny decided they needed to come up with something that would prevent parents from forgetting their children in the car. It's an issue that makes us cringe and shake our heads in disbelief, but it's a real problem that has taken many children's lives. They figured out that they "would need something to attach to the parent, and something to attach to the child's car seat, and something that would stretch in between," Jenny wrote in a blog post. "And it would have to be adjustable, to work in a variety of different-sized cars."

Their brainstorm session turned into a concept they named "Sophie's Baby Forget-Me-Not" and although it may seem like an easy invention, it can save your child's life. "Sophie's Baby Forget-Me-Not" is made of Velcro loops and stretchy cord. By attaching one end of the cord to the baby's car seat straps and the other end of the cord to your keys after getting in the car, you will never forget your keys or your baby in the car. "Sophie's not selling her invention, but she doesn't mind if you copy her design - she wants parents everywhere to make these simple devices and use them every day to ensure no one ever accidentally leaves their babies in the car again," Jenny wrote.

Watch the video above to see how Sophie's invention works, and be inspired to make your own. Although forgetting your baby in the car seems like a mistake no parent would ever make, it's a scarily prevalent issue and Sophie's invention is an awesome way to help.

I Was Addicted to Bread and Here's What Happened When I Stopped Eating It For 1 Month

I honestly didn't know I was addicted to bread. Not until I did a two-week fruit and veggie detox, where I ate nothing but fruits, veggies, beans, nuts, and seeds. Those first few days, I realized bread had an enormous hold on my life because soft, chewy buns were all I could think about. I daydreamed about all the avocado toasts, everything bagels, just-baked sourdough bread, and slices of vegan pizza I'd consume the day that stupid two weeks ended.

But by the end of week one, a shift started to happen. I felt amazing! I had zero bloating and so much energy. I didn't have that usual foggy-headed brain that happened after each meal, and my cravings surprisingly began to diminish.

So I kept going. Once that two weeks ended, I committed to four weeks of continuing on my no-bread ways. This included what I referred to as "trigger foods," such as other refined carbs like baked goods, cereal, granola bars, and pasta, as well as whole grains, popcorn, pretzels, and tortillas. I knew if I was going to be successful at sticking with this, I'd have to ditch all bread-like things or I'd want to eat them all.

To be clear, this was not a carb-free diet. I still ate complex carbs like beans, sweet potatoes, and regular potatoes, just not whole grains. And I ate tons of fruit! One day I even ate two juicy peaches, an avocado, and a pint of freshly-picked strawberries in one sitting - they were perfectly ripe, and I couldn't resist. And I couldn't believe how flat my belly looked and felt.

After the four weeks ended, I celebrated like a complete idiot with a cinnamon bun from a new local vegan bakery, a hummus and bagel sandwich, way-too-much homemade challah bread, and avocado pesto pasta. I felt more miserable than I thought I would, experiencing the worst bloating and fuzzy brain I've ever had. It was a sad day. That day my relationship with bread ended. Because I knew in my heart that eating those foods really makes me feel crappy. Because, for me, once I start eating them, I don't want to stop!

This little one-month experiment, as hard as it was, has been life-changing. My diet is so much cleaner now, and even though I occasionally eat oatmeal, a black bean burrito, curry with coconut rice, pancakes, and homemade protein banana bread, I've really cut down on those foods. And it doesn't make me sad. Instead of thinking about all the foods I shouldn't have that make me feel crappy, I celebrate all the foods I can have that make me feel vibrant, strong, and healthy.

Here are some recipes that have helped me embrace this bread-less diet. If I'm craving:

Game of Thrones: Arya Stark Looks So Much Like Ned Now It's Insane

During the most recent episode of Game of Thrones, "The Spoils of War," a long-awaited reunion between separated sisters Arya and Sansa Stark finally happens. They hug and catch up in Winterfell's crypt, standing in front of the tomb of their late father, Ned Stark. Although Arya remarks that the stone statue looks nothing like him, it's hard not to notice in that scene in particular who does look like Ned: Arya herself.

Over the course of seven seasons, the deadly assassin has undergone a major transformation. She starts off Game of Thrones as a scrappy young girl who just wants to learn how to sword fight, rather than becoming a lady of a castle and marrying some lord. Arya clearly has a special bond with her dad from the get-go, and seeing him brutally and tragically beheaded in King's Landing is what kicks off her mission to get revenge on everyone who harmed her family.

With each new season of the series, Arya has subtly transformed into her father as she matures and becomes savvier about the world around her. From their half-up, pulled-back hairstyles to their layered cloaks, the resemblance between the characters is uncanny (they even wear a similar leather 'X' detail over their chests).

This isn't the first time one of the Stark children has physically taken after Ned, either. In season six, Jon Snow ditches his typical Castle Black attire for a brown leather coat of plates. The vest is the same one that Ned wears in previous episodes, and is traditional attire for House Stark (Robb also dons similar armor in earlier seasons). Not only that, but Jon's habit of tying his hair into man bun earns him some Ned comparisons every now and then, as does his personality overall since both are brooding, fantastic leaders.

Despite the fact Ned has been dead and gone since season one, it's touching to see his legacy still living on in his children in different ways. With the Starks back in control of the North, it will be exciting to see how Jon, Sansa, Arya, and Bran choose to rule.

A Nearly Naked Rihanna Shines Bright Like a Diamond at Barbados's Crop Over Festival

Rihanna is back in her home country of Barbados for one of her favorite events of the year: Crop Over Festival. After showing off her new turquoise hair over the weekend, the 29-year-old singer touched down on the Caribbean island to participate in the annual Kadooment parade, and we have a feeling all eyes were on her. Prior to hitting the streets, Rihanna left very little to the imagination when she modeled her sexy festival outfit, which consisted of a jewel-encrusted bikini and a colorful set of feathered wings, on Instagram. The Crop Over Festival is one of the biggest events in Barbados and marks the end of a successful sugar cane harvest. It's also a well-deserved break for Rihanna, who recently wrapped up the press tour for her new film, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.

I'm Not in Love With My Newborn – Stop Guilting Moms Into Thinking They Should Be

When I was pregnant for the first time, I would watch birthing videos online of mothers meeting their newborns. You know the ones. An exhausted mother labors forever and ever, her partner brushes the hair from her face and tells her she's doing an amazing job. When the baby finally arrives, she reaches out to hold her tiny, wailing prize. Sobbing tears of joy, she glances up at her partner who is beaming with excitement. They were beautiful moments that often brought me to tears and had me yearning for my own emotional greeting with my baby that I had been growing for so many months.

So, imagine how disappointed I was when I finally had my baby girl, four days late, and I didn't cry. I didn't laugh. I didn't really have much of a reaction at all. At the time, I chalked it up to the extra-strong (too strong, according to my doctor's reaction) epidural, or maybe the exhaustion. Was it my hormones? Did I have postpartum depression? What was wrong with me?

Fast forward to today, when as I sit here writing this, I'm nursing my 4-month-old son. My delivery with him was fast. He was born within 30 minutes of arriving at the hospital. There was no time for an epidural, so I. Felt. Everything. But when it was all over and I held his little, sticky, pink body in my arms for the first time, I still didn't cry. I still didn't laugh. I still didn't look over at my husband with pure joy. And this time I couldn't blame my numb emotions on the numbness of my body.

"I didn't want to be judged for telling the truth. No, I wasn't immediately 'in love' with my baby."

With both pregnancies, I had people excitedly asking me questions that I didn't know how to answer. They asked some variation of: "So aren't you just so in love with your baby?!" I didn't know how to answer because I didn't want to be judged for telling the truth. No, I wasn't immediately "in love" with my baby. Not my first baby, and not my second baby either. That's not to say that I don't love my children. I would move heaven and earth for them, but I wasn't IN LOVE with them right away. It's hard to be in love with somebody who makes you almost fall asleep while driving because you're so exhausted all the time. Or screams non-stop while you're trying to make dinner. Or puts tremendous strain on your relationship with your partner. I love my children, but I don't love the newborn stage. And that's OK.

I think I finally started enjoying my daughter when she was about 4 months old. Before then, she would make my heart melt when she smiled or laughed, but I didn't have the adoration for her like I do today. Now she is 2 years old and she is my favorite person on the planet. She makes me laugh every single day and she fills my heart with joy. Even when she's having a temper tantrum, dumping fish food all over the floor, or refusing to eat anything for dinner except ketchup. My heart is full because of her. And now that my son is starting to laugh and play, my feelings for him are growing more and more.

If you're one of those women who held your newborn in your arms and heard choir angels singing, this obviously isn't for you. But if you're one of those women who took a little while to fall in love with the tiny stranger who made complete chaos of your life, just know that you're not alone. Nothing is wrong with you. It's OK to take the time to get to know your baby before those extra-special feelings erupt from within.

Even if you had to go through years of IVF to get that baby, or had to wait months to adopt, or if they're your rainbow baby. You don't have to feel guilty, and it doesn't make you a bad parent. Because when you can confidently scream from the rooftops, "I LOVE THIS BABY!" you will mean it with your whole being. Your feelings will be strong, and they will be fierce, just like mine.

The Meaning of This Salad Meme Is Way Raunchier Than You Might Expect

The internet has a new favorite meme, and it's not one that's easily explained. If you've been on Twitter or Tumblr recently, you've likely started to see an image of an exasperated woman eating salad, with the caption: "Are you serious? Right in front of my salad?"

The clip (and accompanying quote) originated from an NSFW scene in an adult film. To make a long story short: a woman enjoying a bowl of salad realizes that two men in her kitchen are engaging in bedroom activities and questions why they'd do it in front of her salad. The situation has quickly transformed into a meme used to express indignation, and the actress's annoyed facial expression has gone fully viral.

Naturally, due to its origins, usage of the meme ranges from highly risqué to totally innocent and suitable for work based on context . . . but good luck explaining it to anybody who asks what it means. In fact, your best plan of action might be to send them the link to this post and let them find out the rest for themselves!

We've gathered a few work-appropriate examples of the meme in action here, but be forewarned: you might not look at your salad the same way again.

Baby Names You Couldn't Misspell If You Tried

As someone with a unique name, having to constantly spell out my name for people is one of my least favorite things about my moniker (and seeing people try and fail is almost as disheartening). What I wouldn't give for a name that only had one spelling variation or was completely phonetic and easy to get from brain to paper in one go.

If you're looking for a baby name that's all but guaranteed to be spelled right every time, we've compiled a list of names - both classic and modern - for you to choose from. We can't promise they'll get it right at Starbucks, but for everyone else, these names are virtually impossible to misspell (that said, someone will always find a way).

A Movie About the Legendary Life of Lucille Ball Is in the Works, and It Already Has Its Star

Lucille Ball is one of the most legendary actresses from Hollywood's golden era. Not only was she a pioneer for independent women to carve their own career paths and not take no for an answer, but she was also an insanely talented actress whose show, I Love Lucy, is still beloved to this day. It should come as no surprise, then, that a biopic about her life and career is in the works at Amazon. While we've always been apprehensive about movies surrounding Lucy (she's so iconic that it's almost best to leave her story alone), we're actually pretty excited for this one. Not only is the authorized project, titled Lucy and Desi, being produced by Lucille and Desi Arnaz's children, Lucie and Desi Jr., but it already has its star! Keep reading to see everything we know about the biopic so far.

The Story

The film will focus on Ball's life and career, including her tumultuous marriage to Arnaz and her rise to fame through I Love Lucy.

The Cast

Teacher Gives 13-Year-Old Student "Most Likely to Become a Terrorist" Award

Student award ceremonies are supposed to be an uplifting and congratulatory way for students to celebrate their accomplishments from the school year, but this Texas middle school decided to have a "mock award ceremony," where some incredibly offensive awards were given out. Lizeth Villanueva, a 13-year-old student at Anthony Aguirre Junior High in Houston was "shocked" when she was named "most likely to become a terrorist" at the ceremony.

"It was not a joke," Lizeth told Click2Houston. "I do not feel comfortable with this."

The award was included among other "joke" honors, like "most likely to cry for every little thing" and "most likely to become homeless." These were given out to students in an honors program that prepares the kids for college.

This came just one day after the horrific terrorist attack in Manchester where 22 innocent lives were taken. "That's not something to joke around with," Lizeth said, and we couldn't agree more.

The school has since issued a statement on Twitter, explaining that there are plans to launch an investigation following this "insensitive and offensive fake mock awards."

"I want to assure all students, parents, and community members that these award statements and ideals are NOT representative of the Aguirre Vision, Mission, and educational goals for its students," Principal Eric Lathan wrote. "An investigation will be launched into these events."

Lizeth's mother, Ena Hernandez, was furious. "We're really upset about it coming from a teacher," Ena told the Houston station. "That program is supposed to be for advanced kids. It is kind of hard to believe that she's doing that. A teacher giving this to a 13-year-old. How is she going to feel when she grows up later on?"

The school has reportedly suspended the teacher responsible for the award for the remainder of the school year, which ends this week, and the school did not say if she would be back next year.

"Suspension is not enough," Ena said.

Solve the Brain-Teaser That Is Driving People on Facebook Insane

Facebook user Lisa Woelke shared a brain-teaser that has been driving the Internet nuts. The post - which has been shared by more than 170,000 users - depicts a math equation with fruit items in lieu of numbers. For example, it can be deduced from the first line that one apple is equivalent to the number 10. Harmless enough, right? Wrong.

The most common answer for the remaining final line was 16 - and you shouldn't be discouraged if that's the answer you arrived at . . . it just isn't the correct one. The final answer is actually 14. You might be asking yourself, "What the what?" as you ponder the degeneration of your math skills, but it's OK. We can work through this together.

So yes, one apple equals 10, one banana bunch equals four, and the coconuts equal two. However, the final line alters the coconuts and bananas so that they are each missing one, respectively. In the case of the last line, there is only one coconut - equaling one - and three bananas in the bunch, which equal three. So one apple (10) plus one coconut (one) and three bananas (three) equal 14. Voilà!

Jessica Alba Knew Cash Warren Was the One After Their First Meeting

Jessica Alba recently announced that she and husband Cash Warren are expecting their third child together. While we certainly can't wait for the baby's arrival, the news also has us reminiscing about how their beautiful romance came to be. The couple first met on the set of Fantastic Four in 2004 and the actress felt an instant attraction; Jessica was starring in the film as Sue Storm, while Cash was working as a production assistant. "Right after I met [Cash], I called my best friend and was like, 'I met this guy and I feel like I've known him forever and I'm going to know him for the rest of my life,'" she told Cosmopolitan in September 2010.

Jessica and Cash tied the knot in a courthouse ceremony in Beverly Hills in May 2008. At the time, Jessica was pregnant with their first daughter, Honor, whom she later gave birth to in June 2008. Three years later, the couple welcomed their second daughter, Haven, and the two have been going strong ever since.
