I Was Still Pregnant at 42 Weeks, and This Is What Happened Next
I pride myself on being on time. As a type-A, anxious overachiever, I am used to delivering projects ahead of schedule and under budget. I graduated from college in three years instead of four. I like to get places early, I like not feeling rushed, and most of all, I really, really like to plan.
Having a baby is something that everyone thinks can be planned. You think you can plan when you get pregnant, until you learn - often the hard way - that it always happens when it happens. I remember once saying that the only time of year to have a baby is between March and May, and why on earth would anyone do it any other time? I was 20. (Let the record show that my second kid was born in January. BECAUSE THAT'S WHEN IT HAPPENED.)
I love it when I overhear nonparents saying things now about their plans for having a baby in the future. "We're definitely going to have a baby in 2018." "For my job, Winter is the best time to take paternity leave, so we'll do that." And, my favorite, "We just booked a trip to [insert foreign country or relaxing beach destination] for when our unborn baby will be about 3 months old. We'll all be ready to travel then, right?"
I'm not saying any of this to be mean or to laugh at those sweet, naive innocents. I used to be one of them.
My first baby was due on May 18. We were too anxious to be excited, too organized to get caught up in whimsy. We were busy planning. We took classes on "Choices in Childbirth" and wrote a birth plan. We hired a labor doula and a postpartum doula. We made meal plans and grocery lists and bought heavy flow pads for postpartum bleeding. We froze those organic cotton pads, soaked in organic witch hazel, so that they would be soothing during recovery. We took a class on breastfeeding and infant massage. We made spreadsheets. We were Prepared with a capital P.
I left my job at a tech startup in April so that I would have exactly six weeks to "nest." I took prenatal yoga and did acupuncture. Our Jewish traditions kept us from setting up a nursery, but we sent lists to relatives of what to buy as soon as the baby was born, complete with instructions on what all-natural, unscented detergent to use when washing it all.
It was a lot of planning to hide our fears.
In case you're starting to hate us a little bit reading this, yes, it was a lot. It was a lot of planning to hide our fears and anxieties about the huge change we were about to go through. Even though I knew that intellectually, it wasn't until the evening of May 18 that I finally realized what was going on.
I. Had. No. Control. Over anything. Ever again. And it was terrifying.
That night, when it became clear that even if I went into labor that very moment, I was not going to give birth on the 18th as planned, I collapsed on our couch with a pint of ice cream.
"I'm a failure," I said to my husband, hogging the ice cream.
"How do you figure that?" he asked patiently.
"We promised everyone a baby on May 18. It's May 18. There is no baby."
My loving, patient husband reminded me that only about five percent of women actually give birth on their due date. We learned that in Choices in Childbirth. Or was it Newborn Care?
I knew that. Of course. No one preps and plans as much as I did without taking in all the statistics, but I still thought that my baby would arrive on time because that's how we roll in this family. It didn't make logical sense, but please remember I was officially 10 months pregnant if you do the math.
I felt the weight of the world on my shoulders. I somehow had gotten the idea that I was letting down everyone in my life by not producing my baby on time.
I somehow had gotten the idea that I was letting down everyone in my life by not producing my baby on time.
On May 19, even though we'd been pretty quiet about our pregnancy on social media, friends started posing messages on my Facebook wall to the tune of "No baby yet?" and "OMG, so exciting, are you in labor right now?!" even though absolutely nothing was happening in that department. I felt like a fraud.
"Maybe this baby is never coming out," I said to my husband that night. He had kindly brought home a new pint of ice cream for me.
"That's not really an option," he said patiently (did I mention he is really, really patient?!). "One way or another, you'll have this baby soon. Let's try and enjoy this extra time."
Ha! A nice thought. But anyone who has ever been 40 weeks pregnant, or 41, as I soon was, can tell you that the "enjoy" ship has sailed by then. I was beyond uncomfortable. It hurt to sit, it hurt to stand, and lying down was misery. My belly was so huge that lying on my side, as pregnant women are told to, caused insane hip pain. I spent my nights on the couch so my tossing and turning didn't wake my husband, flipping from side to side every hour to relieve the pain. I used a careful assortment of pillows to support my back, my legs, my knees, and my ginormous belly. Not that it helped.
During the days, I walked. I huffed and puffed around Brooklyn, because carrying around 42 weeks' worth of baby and pregnancy is hard, and with my short torso, there was very little room for my lungs to inflate. I ignored the guy on my block who liked to ask if I was having triplets. It seemed like most people hadn't ever seen an overdue pregnant woman. No, we are not having triplets, that is just how it looks to lug around a fully grown child.
Every night I went to sleep thinking, "Surely this is it!," only to wake every morning like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, with the proverbial "I Got You Babe" playing again.
My husband and I went to the park. We took long walks. We got a lot of iced coffees. We polished off many more pints of ice cream. We went to the movies and I missed many a climactic scene to go pee. We schlepped to Manhattan's Upper East Side every other day for hospital-mandated post-due-date non-stress tests to make sure the baby and I were both fine. We were. And then, suddenly, I was 41 weeks and five days pregnant. (The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that women be induced before 42 weeks of pregnancy, as complications are far more likely to occur after that date.)
We had been trying all the usual tricks to get labor started since 40 weeks - spicy food, sex, rigorous walks, acupuncture, reflexology - and had reached the end of the line. As my husband had said, this baby had to come out one way or another.
We went to sleep one last time, the night before our scheduled induction. The hardest part of that for me, besides the fear of all the pain and possible complications, was that induction usually takes a day or two, which pointed to our baby being born in the early hours of June 1.
"I want a May baby," I sobbed. "I was promised a May baby!" I'd like to pause again here to point out that I was, for all intents and purposes, 42 weeks pregnant. I hate to throw my hormones under the bus, but I was possibly not in my most rational frame of mind.
The bottom line is that, after all that, my body knew what to do.
Expecting to wake to the strains of "I Got You Babe," I awoke instead to mild contractions on the morning of May 30 and proceeded to give birth later that day. Not to skip over all those exciting details, but the bottom line is that, after all that, my body knew what to do. The baby and I were both waiting for the right moment. When that right moment came, it all unfolded exactly like they said it would in Choices in Childbirth.
Our daughter weighed in at just under 7 pounds, proving that she probably needed every last moment of those 42 weeks to "cook." I am guessing she was also just really comfortable and didn't feel like coming out any sooner than she absolutely had to. She gets that from me - I know the feeling - and besides, when I was born back in the 1980s, I was a full three weeks late. (Yes, the doctors let my mom go 43 weeks, and yes, she's a hero.)
Moral of the story: sometimes you just can't control everything, or, well, anything, no matter how hard you try, and in the end, it doesn't really matter. I'm not going to pretend that it was smooth sailing from there because, hello, postpartum anxiety and breastfeeding challenges, but the baby and I were happy and healthy overall and my patient husband continues to be amazing.
We even eventually decided to do that whole baby thing again, and welcomed our son at 41-plus weeks in between January blizzards. This time, no one ever once even mentioned my due date, induction, or what would happen if I went to 42 weeks again. And I was way too busy enjoying the crazy chaos of my unpredictable life to even wonder.
The Reason This 1 Mom Is "Homesick" Is Not What You'd Expect
Kids grow up really fast, like, really fast, and this fact sunk in for mom Lauri Walker in an unlikely place - her son's last baseball game of the season.
The blogger behind Mama Needs a Nap shared a sweet Facebook post about how her son's baseball season ending meant a lot more to her than just retiring a new jersey.
"I know some may find it ridiculous. I'm surprised myself," she wrote. "As I unpack from our trip this morning I am fighting tears as I take baseball uniforms to the laundry for the last time this year."
Walker described how the fact that her son is actually getting older and closer to leaving the nest is pretty much everywhere if you look hard enough.
"He's worn out another pair of baseball cleats so those will go away, too, and soon I'll stop cleaning sunflower seeds out of the lint trap in the dryer," she said.
And while this mom is aware that the end of a sports season doesn't mean her kid is done with the game forever, it definitely marks the passage of time. And that tends to move fast when you're shuffling from one child's activity to another.
"Certainly not the end of baseball for him because he'll play every chance he gets, but it is time for a break," she said. "He needs it, whether he wants it or not. It's time for another sport and other activities, but there will be winter training and pick-up games and whiffle ball."
She emphasizes that she's not sad because her kid is, but rather she's emotional because she "loved every second" of seeing the joy that baseball brought her kid all season long. She enjoyed watching him spending time with his friends doing something he was so passionate about.
"So today, I'm a little weepy and a little homesick and that's OK . . . Because they don't call it home plate for nothing."
It's Clear That Amber Stevens Is the Apple of Andrew J. West's Eye
Andrew J. West and Amber Stevens are living proof that curses can be broken. No, not the dark curse on Once Upon a Time, but the TV-costars-turned-couples curse that has broken up some of our favorite duos over the years. The two first met when they played love interests on their hit show Greek, and while things didn't end well for their characters, the pair have been living out their happily ever after ever since. In August 2013, Amber announced their engagement on Twitter, and over a year later, they made things official when they tied the knot in a romantic ceremony in LA. Aside from hitting the red carpet together from time to time, the two are constantly giving us sneak peeks of their love on social media, and we can't get enough. Andrew may be playing the adult Henry Mills on OUAT, but he and Amber are anything but your run-of-the-mill couple.

Why This Photo of "Batteries" in a Toy Car Needs to Go Viral Right Now
Kids are weird, hilarious, and pretty darn resourceful and no image makes that more clear than this one of a toy car's battery compartment.
Australian mom Heather Leroux posted a photo, nothing that her son "just found the 'batteries' in my makeup bag."
What are those "batteries," you wonder?
Oh, they're tampons. Double-A tampons.
Yep, kids are weird.
I Channeled Kendall Jenner - and Went Braless at Work
I hopped off the bus in Times Square and started to walk toward the office. That's when he saw me. He shook his head back and forth slowly as he stared down at my chest. "Why do you do that?" the man moaned loudly. Yes, seriously. I sped up into a walk-run, suddenly feeling extremely self-conscious.
I was wearing a sleeveless turtleneck in a fuzzy mustard-colored material so as to distract from my nipples as much as possible. Clearly, it wasn't really working. Plus, a bathroom selfie I had taken in the mirror that morning confirmed it was definitely easy to make out the shape of my boobs. But when I left the house, I had been comfortable. There were no bra straps to slip off my shoulders or underwire to adjust when it dug into my skin. Honestly, I kind of liked the look. I thought my outfit - the aforementioned turtleneck plus a denim skirt with a pair of sneakers - appeared effortless. I added a pair of gold hoop earrings too, which said "polished" but my nipples were just like "whatever." "Is this how it feels to dress like a French girl?" I wondered.
But you should know the reason why I decided to ditch a bra in the first place. During a brainstorm with my coworkers, I came up with the idea as an "editor experiment" based on the fact that Kendall Jenner has been all about wearing sheer tops that expose her nipple ring this Summer and supermodel sisters Bella and Gigi Hadid have followed suit. (The Hadid sisters don't have nipple rings, but they do have nipples.) And even though these ladies are more well-endowed than I am, they seem very nonchalant about going braless. When I look at their street style shots, I want to put on an outfit that appears to be so easy. "So who's going to try it?" I challenged, looking around the room during our meeting. "Why don't you do it?" someone said. Right. I had unknowingly volunteered myself to go braless, and at that point, I couldn't turn back.
So there I was the next day in a black button-down cardigan - one I usually wear with my Victoria's Secret Bombshell push-up bra. But on this day, there was more of just a sag situation going on. I styled my sweater with cropped high-waisted denim, pointed-toe flats, and artsy earrings I always get compliments on. I wasn't trying to distract from my breasts, but I was, perhaps, trying to channel Audrey Hepburn.
"I can totally tell you're not wearing a bra," my mom blurted out at dinner on this night, as we sat around the table with my cousin who was visiting, my boyfriend, who probably doesn't love that I'm writing a Tale of Two Titties to be posted online, my sister, my grandma, who doesn't even remember where she keeps her bras or what they're for, and oh yeah, my dad. "Yes, I guess that's the point." I said, again feeling sort of uncomfortable that everyone was now staring at my chest. We're a supercasual family, so it's not like this was such a big deal. But I guess I was surprised by how often people were taking note - even when I was wearing black.
I took a final stance on going braless when the weekend came, and I was able to style my "going out" outfits more easily. Since a night out to dinner with Bae called for a pretty little sundress with complicated bow straps, it felt like such a relief to not have to worry about the placement of stick-on boobs, or as some girls call them, "chicken cutlets." There was zero panic about those guys peeking out from the sides or the top of my dress, and no chance of them slipping down when I started to sweat (partly because it's Summer and partly because the Cioppino sauce was supposed to be spicy).
Later that night, I changed into a floral tube top that cinches into a bow at the front and would absolutely have revealed all different smidgens of my bra or bralette if I had attempted to wear one. I threw on the flirty top with cutoffs and sandals and danced the night away. It felt so easy! "This is it! I am French!" I thought to myself as I kicked it to "Despacito" at the bar. Some of the people I am friends with and spend time with on the weekend did notice I wasn't wearing a bra. Jokingly, they called me names like "Titties McGee" which felt a little bit demeaning to me, but in their defense, I told them all about my experiment, and they were very supportive.
All in all, going braless is far less manageable at the workplace. I couldn't help but feel uncomfortable when I was sitting in meetings, the AC was blasting, and my nipples were the most excited things in the room. But going braless on the weekend? Now that I can get behind - I even think it looks more elegant to make the move with a fancy gown at a wedding. Because really, messing around with boob tape is never fun, and it can cause wardrobe malfunctions and straight-up inconvenience when you're just trying to enjoy the shrimp cocktail instead of having to run to the bathroom every five minutes.
That said, going braless isn't for everyone. There are women who truly need the support of a bra on an everyday basis, and luckily for them, the look is definitely more sleek, polished, and clean. Nevertheless, I don't mind a good fashion experiment every now and then. I could have done without the 8:30 a.m. comments from the man who interrupted my walk to work, but it did help me to draw conclusions about how I felt without a bra on. I do think going a full week without one helped me feel more confident in my own skin.
Not that bra size is of much importance to me, but as a 32A, I wouldn't mind being, like, one cup size bigger. It'd be nice to fill out a bodyhugging top with a plunging neckline, instead of swimming in the material or having to secure a safety pin behind my neck to hold things in place. And I'd love to wear one of those retro-style swimsuits with a half-moon cup and underwire that provides lift. Unfortunately, I don't really have much of anything to "lift." Even so, my boobs became more visible to me during the week I went braless. As soon as I took off my shirt at the end of the day, there they were!
I discovered the natural shape of my boobs, too, because I was always staring right at them when I looked in the mirror. It turns out, my boobs aren't perfect mini-circles, as they appear to be when I'm wearing a bra. Without a bra, I had to support my own breasts, and I did this by wearing my head high and shrugging off the double takes and widened eyes of the people I passed on the street. I did this by paying attention to my posture. Instead of slouching, I stood up straight. Instead of hunching over at my desk, I perked my head up and rolled my shoulders back. The whole week was a sort of lesson in poise for me, and I'm proud of myself for sticking through it. I'm proud of my boobs, too.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Have Reportedly Put Their Divorce on Hold
Nearly a year after filing for divorce from Brad Pitt, it seems like Angelina Jolie may be having second thoughts. According to Us Weekly, their divorce is being put on hold. "They haven't done anything to move it forward in several months and no one thinks they are ever going to," a source told the magazine.
While it is still unclear what led to their initial split - there was reportedly a violent altercation between Brad and their 15-year-old son Maddox during a plane ride - the two have been focused on raising their six children in a positive and healthy environment. Brad has even started going to therapy for drinking and smoking, a move Us Weekly adds has made Angelina consider taking him back. "He knew he had a problem that he had to take care of and that's all she ever wanted," the source continued. "Everyone thinks they are going to get back together. It wouldn't be surprising if they announced that they're calling it off and trying to work things out."
Jennifer Lopez's World of Dance Finale Dress Was Everything Thanks to This 1 Detail
Jennifer Lopez loves bringing the drama with her outfits on World of Dance. If she isn't channeling her inner flamenco dancer emoji, she's showing off her legs in a miniskirt. The woman knows how to have everyone sitting on the edge of their seats waiting to see what she's going to show up in next.
For the season finale, Jennifer went for different pops of color and gave us serious Mardi Gras vibes. She wore a knee-length dress made up with an array of purple, black, gold, and green. What added that extra level of sexy wasn't the silver choker but the fact that the dress had a slit that went up her thigh, which gave it a high-low feature. She finished off her look with some sparkly pieces of jewelry and a pair of simple yet chic heels. If you aren't able to buy the exact same pieces, shop similar options ahead to channel your inner Jennifer Lopez.
Meet the Badass Female Judge Who Just Stopped 4 Dangerous Antiabortion Laws
Just before midnight on July 28, US District Court Judge Kristine Baker took a major step toward protecting the right to choose in Arkansas. The state first made headlines in June after lawmakers greenlit a set of incredibly draconian laws aimed at deterring or preventing women from getting abortions. Together, these four restrictions targeted all aspects of the right to choose, from requiring a woman to inform the man who impregnated her if she chose to abort to blocking the most common abortion procedure to instituting new, cumbersome rules around the disposal of fetuses. The state went to great lengths to make sure that the rules would not only make it difficult to acquire a legal abortion, but also make it difficult on the emotional side of things as well. The ACLU went so far as to call the measures "invasive, medically unnecessary, burdensome hurdles that do nothing to advance women's health and are tantamount to outright abortion bans for many women" and went on to challenge the Arkansas legislature in court.
Three of the four laws were set to go into place on Aug. 1, regardless of the outstanding motions against them. But just four days before they were set to take effect, Judge Baker succeeded where others had not been able to in the weeks prior: she filed an emergency injunction, successfully barring the state from moving ahead with implementation.
"The Court is not convinced that importing the (disposal law's) complex requirements for authorization advances a public health goal," Baker wrote in her ruling. "These requirements also do not advance interests in women's health because delay and other negative effects instead threaten women's health and wellbeing." In other words: there's an appalling lack of humanity in making a victim of sexual assault confront her assailant in order to essentially secure permission for an abortion or to require a woman to disclose all past pregnancy history to a doctor after opting for an abortion. There's just no world in which that's not an attempt to criminalize the act. But thanks to Kristine Baker, women are now free from such condescending, potentially dangerous legislation - at least for the time being.
The battle isn't over quite yet, of course. There will likely be a fierce court battle bolstered, and lawmakers in the state are already devising new legislation, such as limitation on how abortion pills can be administered. In fact, that new proposal began making the rounds just hours before Baker was able to stop the previous four laws from taking hold. But it's important to recognize a victory for what it is: a victory. "Arkansas women can feel a little relief today, knowing that these laws are blocked from taking effect," the executive director of the ACLU said in a statement. And here's hoping that there are more individuals like Kristine Baker out there, ready to champion the rights that we deserve in our day-to-day lives.

What It's Like to Take a Self-Defense Class and Why You Should Do It
I was nervous walking into my first self-defense class. I'm not a physical or aggressive person, and I felt outside of my element entering the martial arts studio where I'd enrolled. I had never seen martial artists in action, so the environment seemed utterly foreign to me. But I was trying to shake off an unsettling encounter on Chicago's "L" train, and I was hoping to muster up some poise and perspective.
The class was composed entirely of women. There were no chiseled athletes among us - we were nervous beginners of all ages, shapes, and sizes. Over the course of the class, we became well-acquainted with each other as we partnered up to practice chokeholds, grabs, and simple takedowns. It was a fun, supportive environment. My teacher was a black belt who seemed as though he had taught the class many times. He was a seasoned pro who had clearly put a lot of care into his approach.
I learned about the nuts and bolts of defending myself, and I also learned how to be a more physically confident person. It was deeply empowering. Here's what stuck with me:
Learning to Think If Being Attacked
My teacher was very professional the first time he put a hold on me. He explained exactly how he would approach, so I knew what to expect. But I had never been physically restrained, and I was surprised at my emotional response. His arms were like tree branches - strong and unrelenting. I felt ashamed at my reaction: tears sprung to my eyes. I felt trapped and powerless, and I froze in his grip.
My teacher explained what to consider when bound. In a calm voice, he narrated the steps to follow. His assurance and direction replaced the roadblock of my fear. He explained how I could breathe better if I slightly moved his arm from around my neck. He showed me vulnerabilities on his body that I could hit to stun him or knock him off balance. He showed me weaknesses in his hold that I could exploit to get free. He assured me that just by being able to remain calm and analyze this equation, I gave myself power.
I learned to analyze the mechanics of a hold instead of just panicking. As I gained more experience practicing with him and my classmates, I realized that I could problem-solve when I was bound.
This confidence stays with me, and it's a valuable takeaway: if I hadn't studied this, I would still be at the point where I get tears in my eyes if someone grabs me. Now I have an autopilot that kicks on. My body has been trained for that.
The Value of Rehearsal
Over the course of the class, we discussed preliminary moves like foot stomps, groin kicks, and kicks to the sides of the knee. We practiced throwing an opponent off balance by using our weight and momentum; for example, if someone grabs you with both arms from behind, you can break the hold by leaning back into his grip and then launching your body forward while snapping both of your arms straight.
We also learned about various pressure points including my favorite, the mandibular nerve, which is behind the ear and above the jaw bone. It's a great go-to point because it's accessible from many holds, and it really hurts when someone digs her knuckle in at that point.
The Importance of Awareness
I learned that a big advantage attackers have is that they surprise, scare, and suppress their victims. By conditioning strategic responses, we usurp that secret weapon.
An important way to avert danger is simply to be more aware, so that we take away the opportunity for a potential attacker to get an upper hand on us. When I'm on the train now, for example, I find it safer to stand or sit in an aisle seat rather than to box myself in by a window. I can't enact much from that position if someone tries to overpower me.
Also I recognize that I need to hear what's going on around me on the street. This has been disappointing for me to come to terms with, but I know that walking with my headphones on can make me a target. It leaves me unable to hear and with easy-to-grab cords near my throat.
Walk Like You Mean It
Where I once harbored fear, I now amass strategy. I used to hit a mental roadblock if I would imagine being attacked. It was too scary for me to really contemplate. Now, I can think it through, and I can work out possible moves I would make in various scenarios.
I am a more confident person because I took this class. It empowered me in ways I couldn't have imagined when I started.
That confidence and awareness reverberates through me. It makes me walk taller and with a greater sense of awareness and purpose.
I plan to take a follow-up self-defense class, this time with my kids. I think everyone should train in these vital skills.
If you're considering taking a self-defense class, do it. Don't be intimidated to try it. You don't have to be brave or in great shape to be successful at this. Just show up and be willing to learn. It's worth it.
This Is the Bloody History Between Jaime Lannister and Euron Greyjoy
In the Game of Thrones season premiere, we see Cersei and Jaime Lannister struggle with almost being completely surrounded by enemies. They know that they need a powerful ally in this war if they are going to keep the Iron Throne, so they turn to Euron Greyjoy. But who is he and how exactly does he know Jaime Lannister?
We get some of their backstory when Euron comes to King's Landing, and the two men reference a battle - the Greyjoy Rebellion, which happened nine years before the events of the show. According to the books, the Ironborn, or natives of the Iron Islands, not only wanted independence, but to revert to the "Old Way," or their traditional lifestyle of reaving and plundering in the name of the Drowned God. Balon Greyjoy, Euron's brother (and Theon and Yara's father), declared himself the King of the Iron Islands, rebelling against current King Robert Baratheon, who himself had usurped the throne from Aerys Targaryen. Next, Balon planned the Raid on Lannisport, and Euron Greyjoy sailed to Casterly Rock and burned the Lannister fleet.
The Ironborn were eventually overtaken by Robert and his allies (which was pretty much everyone in Westeros besides the Greyjoys), and Jaime Lannister was able to take part in Robert's massive victory at the Siege of Pyke, which he and Euron are reminiscing about (at the time, Jaime is part of the Kingsguard and the fleet of ships belonged to his family). Jaime and Euron were both personally in that battle, and Euron even praises Jaime's fighting ability in the season seven premiere, despite losing the battle. Euron lost two of his nephews, Balon's sons, in the rebellion.
Euron had to go into exile after the defeat, but his Iron Fleet grew stronger. Balon Greyjoy surrendered to King Baratheon and was accepted back into the kingdom in peace in exchange for his son, Theon, staying with the Starks as a hostage.
On top of all this dramatic history, Jaime could also inherit Casterly Rock, an area that was once promised as a reward to Balon Greyjoy once the war between the North and Lannisters is over, since Casterly Rock is technically under rule of House Lannister.
So the Greyjoys, Lannisters, and Baratheons certainly have a fraught relationship, given they've gone to battle before. But it looks like the betrayal of their relatives is what is going to bring them together as allies, despite their complicated history.
13 Reasons Why: Dylan Minnette Reveals Clay Might Get a New Love Interest in Season 2
13 Reasons Why isn't coming back for season two until some point next year, but luckily some choice details about the new episodes have slowly but surely been trickling in. Although we still don't know exactly how Hannah (Katherine Langford) will appear in the second season or what the future holds for characters like Jessica and Bryce, star Dylan Minnette recently shed some light on how his character, Clay, will try to move on from what happened to his friend and longtime crush.
"I think that that last shot of season one was a glimpse at him maybe beginning to find some closure, whatever way that is," Minnette said about Clay and Hannah while speaking with Us Weekly. "I don't think it's completely closure, because I don't think he'll really ever be able to find complete closure in that chapter of his life because it's the biggest thing that's ever happened to him, the most impactful thing that's ever happened to him."
Minnette added it's going to be "a long, long, long journey for him to find complete closure," and that fans "will also be surprised by where he ends up, because I'm also trying to figure it out myself right now." Clay's relationship with Hannah is one of the more heartbreaking aspects of the show, but the 20-year-old actor hinted that Clay striking up a romance with someone new isn't totally out of the question. "I don't know if there's a new love [interest]," he teased. "We'll just have to see."
A bunch of new characters have been added to the cast for season two, so maybe one of them ends up connecting with Clay? Then again, Sosie Bacon's character, tattooed barista Skye, definitely gets closer to Clay by the end of season one, when the two of them drive off with Tony (Christian Navarro). No one will ever take Hannah's place in Clay's heart, obviously, but it will be interesting to see how the show's writers plan to address Clay's growth in season two.
Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon Can't Get Through Their Camp Sketch Without Laughing
We love it when Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon hang out in any capacity, but we get especially excited when they return to Camp Winnipesaukee. The close pals reprised their roles as nerdy, early '90s Summer campers on The Tonight Show on Tuesday, and to say they had us crying with laughter would be an understatement. Not only do they struggle to get through their lines without laughing, but Keegan-Michael Key also pops up as their hilarious camp counselor who doesn't understand the idea of personal space. Get ready to LOL until you can no longer take it.
Zendaya's Sparkly Pink Suit Is From an Awesome Brand You Didn't Know Existed
When Zendaya stepped onto the carpet at the Variety Power of Young Hollywood event in LA, we were blown away by her ombré-effect, crystal-covered suit that came in the sprightly color of millennial pink. Of course, this is our usual reaction upon spotting Zendaya. The 20-year-old works with stylist Law Roach, who also comes up with outfits equally as eye-catching for Celine Dion. For this particular evening, Roach tapped Italian brand Vivetta for Zendaya's scene-stealing separates, capping them off with a pair of Ruthie Davis heels.
Zendaya wore the look with confidence, as she does all her wow-worthy ensembles. Vivetta has been around since 2009, but upon first glance, we might have guessed Zendaya's sparkly suit was by Gucci or Prada. When you read on, you can zoom in on all the design's little details, then find similarly playful, spunky pieces from the label you might only be getting to know just now.

The Pioneer Woman's 5-Ingredient Corn Casserole Is Your New Go-To Side Dish
You may or may not have seen the Pioneer Woman episode with Ree Drummond's baked cream corn casserole, but after seeing the recipe, you're going to want to make it ASAP. Like all of Ree Drummond's best recipes, this summery side is fast, easy, made with only a few simple ingredients, and - most importantly - satisfying. The five key ingredients are fresh corn, red bell peppers, fresh jalapeños, butter, and heavy cream. Like an elevated version of the standard creamed corn you've probably made before, this corn casserole has the freshness of the bell peppers and the heat of the jalapeños to cut through the richness of the cream and butter.
First, you'll want to cut the corn kernels off the cob into a deep bowl with a sharp knife (as pictured above). That's the hardest part, and from there, all you have to do is combine the rest of the fresh ingredients in the bowl, add plenty of salt and pepper, and pour it into a baking dish. You'll know the corn is ready to serve when it's piping hot and bubbling, which takes less than an hour at 350°F. Reviewers' comments include "best corn I ever ate," "never any leftovers," and "my new go-to side Summer side dish." The only change you might want to make is doubling the recipe. See the full recipe for yourself ahead, and prepare to pair it with your favorite Summer potluck recipe all season long.

If You Experience Hormonal Breakouts, You'll Thank God For This Mask
I've yet to find a woman who hasn't encountered this issue: you're about to embark on that time of the month, and your skin appears to be mirroring just how annoyed, inflamed, and pissed off you feel on the inside. (If you haven't, please DM me immediately so I can paint a full picture.) But I've found something that has helped my skin during this monthly visit - premenstrual, if you will - and it doesn't require removing my uterus. Yay! In fact, it's a face mask, and it's going to be something you will wish they sold at Costco. Someone just get me a giant vat of this stuff.
The mask comes from Renée Rouleau, Demi Lovato's go-to esthetician and Texas native. She has helped me with two major skin care woes in my life, issues that have plagued me. First, she is the one who identified that I had melasma when I was 25. Mid-20s me thought the dark spots on my forehead and cheeks, which could appear to be shadows to the naked eye, were remnants of my self-tanner that I wasn't able to wash off. (To be young and naive.) It was during a facial at her Dallas location that she gently brought up that I had melasma and informed me of what triggered it: my birth control.
This changed my life. Seriously. I got off birth control, something I was able to do without worry at the time. I stopped upsetting my melanocytes - the cells that produce melanin, or pigment, in the skin - with heated, aggressive treatments. (For the most part.) I wore a hat to the beach and aspired to stay out of the heat in general, knowing the temperature could set my melasma off. And although there's a little bit on my forehead, it's less noticeable than it once was.
Then, a few years later, I had a breakout after leaving the Coachella Valley. God help me. My cheeks were ridden with red bumps and pustules, something I knew wasn't normal, and I realized they recurred each time I left Palm Springs. My (since dropped) dermatologist was quick to prescribe me pills to kill whatever it was, but wanting actual answers, I wrote Renée, who is now based in Austin. She asked me a variety of questions about my weekend that helped her pinpoint what I was experiencing: acne cosmetica. Spending long days in the dry climate with heavy winds and an oil-based foundation meant my pores were being blocked by my foundation and increased my oil production, resulting in what looks like a breakout. She made an easy suggestion: wear powder foundation on your next trip. And you know what? I haven't had a breakout in the desert since!
Now you know that I trust this woman. She dug deeper than my dermatologist bothered to in order to find the right solution. This is incredibly helpful when you're trying to fix any skin issue you have; it is invaluable.
Visiting Renée over Golden Globes weekend, I got a chance to receive a facial and learn about her new products. First, she told me I needed to "put the fire out of my skin." It was inflamed as hell, and I had several cysts that I hadn't battled with in some time. And truth be told, it kind of comes with the territory when you're testing skin care products regularly, but she reminded me that I must be gentle. She took a minute to give my skin a chill pill in the form of a rubber mask, then introduced me to her newest baby, an anti-breakout solution for hormonal acne that won't dry out your skin: the Rapid Response Detox Masque ($61).
Is it too good to be true? No. It works. I've tested it for a month, and I'm currently wearing the sheerest foundation I own - a compact from Laneige - if that gives you any indication. It works to help with clogged pores that result from travel, hormones, and even sleeping with makeup on. Renée suggests it for premenstrual acne to help "disrupt the acne cycle." This is mask is lightweight and dreamy; when it dries, it doesn't feel hard, sticky, or taut. Renée suggests exfoliating before applying the mask, so lightly scrub or use a peel to help get rid of dead skin. The mask itself is a golden, shimmery gel. Slather it on and let the following eliminate your future breakouts: tea tree leaf oil is antimicrobial and an anti-inflammatory that helps with acne bacteria. Helping to stop inflammation is key when it comes to getting rid of your breakouts, which is why she also included lichocalchone, or Chinese licorice, which helps soothe the skin. Manuka branch/leaf oil helps with the microbial - or bacteria - count on your skin's surface, and she included a salicylic acid complex to help exfoliate and reduce oil.
This mask doesn't include parabens, synthetic fragrances, synthetic dyes, SD alcohol, or gluten, which my skin was thrilled about. I use it once a week, and it's recommended you leave on for about 15 minutes. (I tend to go over since I get distracted and forget I have it on.) Many masks take a few minutes to get off because they leave patches of product behind. This slides off the skin easily and leaves your with a glow afterward.
Investing in your skin, period, is always a good idea, but especially during that time of the month. My skin will take any help it can get!
Emily Ratajkowski Just Wore the Pair of Shoes You'd Never Expect to See With Track Pants
Emily Ratajkowski marched right into the Jimmy Kimmel Live studio in a very bold look. Once she arrived, she might have changed into a printed silk dress, but before that, it was all casual separates - capped off with a pair of white patent booties. An unexpected shoe choice, we know, but Emily made it work, baring her midriff in a slashed crop top that she met with Adidas joggers.
Perhaps all the gold jewelry helped to complement and play up Emily's fancy feet, which definitely stood out against sweats. Nevertheless, we're now thinking of trying the combination out for ourselves. Just tuck a pair of sporty tapered pants into your '80s style boots, and you're ready to go. It's a pretty good Summer-to-Fall transitional outfit for when you're running errands, no?
Could Mace Windu Be Supreme Leader Snoke? This Theory Is Very Convincing
When it comes to the newest Star Wars trilogy, so much is still shrouded in mystery. Since watching 2015's Episode VII (The Force Awakens), our primary focus has been on the main character, Rey. The world at large couldn't stop theorizing about the identity of her parents. Now that we know Episode VIII has been titled The Last Jedi, our minds are spinning even more trying to figure out who the title is referring to. Among all of these questions, one even larger mystery seems to linger: we're talking about the identity of Supreme Leader Snoke. As we consider the suspects, one new theory has come totally out of left field. What if Mace Windu, played by Samuel L. Jackson in Episode I, Episode II, and Episode III, is the mysterious new villain? Let's break down the logic behind the claim.
Mace Windu Might Still Be Alive
Jackson stated in a Twitter Q&A in June 2016 that he thinks Mace Windu is alive. "In my mind, he's alive. [Jedi] can fall incredibly high distances and not die." It's worth noting that Mace Windu loses a hand and experiences the full impact of Palpatine's Force lightning before he's flung out of a window to his death. That said, no Jedi has ever died in the series from any of those three types of injury. In fact, some characters have survived falls of even greater distances. If Mace Windu doesn't die in Episode III, there are unlimited options for where he could be.
But How Could Mace Become as Disfigured as Snoke?
As is clearly evidenced in that very same scene, the reason Palpatine becomes so deformed is because of his own Force lightning deflected back at him. It stands to reason that Windu could develop the same horrifying scars and pallor from Palpatine's attack. Snoke's huge head scar could be from Windu's great fall. And, hey, they're both bald. It's worth noting.
Wouldn't He Be Old as Hell, Though?
Yes, but that doesn't mean his survival up through the new trilogy is out of the question. After all, Snoke does say he witnessed the rise and fall of the Galactic Empire, meaning he was around during the first two trilogies. This means he could very well be Mace Windu.
Mace Windu Is in Touch With the Dark Side
Mace Windu notably harnesses the power of the dark side, even in spite of the fact that he's a Jedi knight. Even his purple lightsaber is an indicator that he straddles both sides. The trademark blue of the Jedi could mix with the red of the Sith to get this very color.
Mace Windu's Motive For Revenge
So, why would he turn to the dark side? Well, the fact that he's betrayed by Anakin Skywalker may be reason enough. We know Snoke is determined to find Luke Skywalker, and using Anakin's betrayal as a motivating force would explain why. Plus! If you subscribe to the theory that Rey is actually a Palpatine, it strengthens the argument and explains why Snoke is so obsessed with her. After all, Mace Windu would want to get back at Palpatine for everything he does in that supposed death scene.
There are even more layers to this, but that's the gist. If you're interested in Mace Windu's signature lightsaber move, his connection to Finn, and the further involvement with Kylo Ren, this video outlines everything in much more detail:

The Truth Behind Rumors Joanna Gaines Is Leaving HGTV
Joanna Gaines can't seem to shake rumors she's leaving HGTV, the network that made her a household name. In fact, the Fixer Upper star has been plagued with rumors she's departing home design all together to enter the beauty business. Common sense tells us that this doesn't make any sense. After all, Joanna's business endeavors don't stop at Fixer Upper. They include Waco, Texas, home and garden mecca Magnolia Market, several collections of home decor, paint, and a wallpaper line. The list goes on.
In short, Joanna's love for interior design runs deep. We would be shocked if she walked away from it for an industry we've scarcely heard her mention. But if logic isn't enough to assuage your fears that Joanna is leaving Fixer Upper, we have more concrete proof the show is going on ahead. When Not Heating Up GOT as Missandei, Actress Nathalie Emmanuel Is Living a Stylish Life

Jessica Alba Knew Cash Warren Was the One After Their First Meeting
Jessica Alba recently announced that she and husband Cash Warren are expecting their third child together. While we certainly can't wait for the baby's arrival, the news also has us reminiscing about how their beautiful romance came to be. The couple first met on the set of Fantastic Four in 2004 and the actress felt an instant attraction; Jessica was starring in the film as Sue Storm, while Cash was working as a production assistant. "Right after I met [Cash], I called my best friend and was like, 'I met this guy and I feel like I've known him forever and I'm going to know him for the rest of my life,'" she told Cosmopolitan in September 2010.
Jessica and Cash tied the knot in a courthouse ceremony in Beverly Hills in May 2008. At the time, Jessica was pregnant with their first daughter, Honor, whom she later gave birth to in June 2008. Three years later, the couple welcomed their second daughter, Haven, and the two have been going strong ever since.
Will Smith Gets Jiggy With a Full Marching Band During Carpool Karaoke
Carpool Karaoke: The Series kicked off on a really high note on Tuesday night when Will Smith took a ride in the passenger seat with The Late Late Show host James Corden. During the premiere episode for the Apple Music series, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air actor took things way back by performing his classic hit "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It" with a full marching band. Aside from busting the rhymes to some of his most beloved songs, Will also chatted with James about the possibility of playing former POTUS Barack Obama in a movie. "I talked to Barack about it," he admitted. "He told me he felt confident that I had 'the ears' to play the role." See the rest of the fun above, and be sure to check out the full episode on Apple Music.
J.K. Rowling Said THIS Is Her Favorite Harry Potter Theory
The first Harry Potter book came out almost 20 years ago, but not a day goes by where new theories and plot coincidences don't shock us all (and make us want to reread the entire series). J.K. Rowling keeps up with them too and she recently answered a fan's question about which is her favorite.
@jk_rowling what's you favourite fan theory??
- Abbie Louise (@AbbieLou24601) August 21, 2015
Dumbledore as death. It's a beautiful theory and it fits. https://t.co/QqTQm2QnI0
- J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) August 21, 2015
That mind-blowing revelation comes from Tumblr user harryjxmespotter, who compares Dumbledore to death in "The Tale of the Three Brothers."
If you remember, the tale was about the Peverell brothers, each possessing one of the Deathly Hallows - the elder wand, the invisibility cloak, and the resurrection stone. The long-standing Internet theory is that Harry Potter, Snape, and Voldemort are modern-day representations of the three brothers.
Voldemort is associated with the older brother, who was obsessed with power. Snape is basically the middle brother, who can't let go of his past love, Lily, and dies a sad death still loving her. This leaves Harry to take on the role of the youngest brother, and Harry himself literally possessed the invisibility cloak.
The only piece of the puzzle that makes this theory even more plausible is that Dumbledore himself is death. "He greeted Harry at King's Cross and was the one behind Snape and Voldemort's death," harryjxmespotter wrote. See the entire post below:

Seven Magic Mountains Is a Colorful Destination That Stands Out in the Nevada Desert
Against the dull brown backdrop of desert sand sits a splash of color reminiscent of a rainbow. The Seven Mountains art exhibition, however, is man-made. Located in the desert outside of Las Vegas, NV, the installation created by Ugo Rondinone features seven 30- to 35-foot-high "dayglow totems" made of painted boulders.
The colorful piece of art can be see off of Interstate 15 and was designed as an imitation of travel destinations like Las Vegas. According to Rondinone, the location is "physically and symbolically mid-way between the natural and the artificial: the natural is expressed by the mountain ranges, desert, and Jean Dry Lake backdrop, and the artificial is expressed by the highway and the constant flow of traffic between Los Angeles and Las Vegas."
Travelers clearly enjoy capturing the bright boulders in the background of their photos; the spot is undeniably a prime one for Instagram-lovers and photographers. See the photos of the stunning installment ahead and stop by the totems the next time you're road tripping out West.
If This Isn't Melania Trump's Power Color of the Summer, We Don't Know What Is
While we were definitely struck by Melania Trump's vibrant wardrobe for her European tour, if you consider her Summer palette in full, you'll notice plenty of white looks. Some are sheaths, like her go-to Michael Kors Collection silhouette, while others are suits. But it seems like ever since the end of April, Melania has been playing up her glow in the shade. Of course, we don't blame her for choosing the trusty neutral time and time again - she's got plenty of floral pumps to style with monochrome dresses.
When Melania attended a meeting at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, all we could see was the top portion of her form-fitting sheath. Nevertheless, she was clearly striking the same style chords as she has all season long. Read on to track all of Melania's white designs from Summer 2017, which only lead us to wonder: will the trend continue post-Labor Day?

Though it's a very misinterpreted genre, it touches upon very real-life situations in a manageable manner, which both teenagers and adults can interpret and relate to. The themes of identity, sexuality, friendship, loss, and more consistently appear in YA novels, which is why they're often referred to as "coming-of-age" novels. Being a young adult can be difficult, and there is no better way to deal with some of life's biggest hurdles than with a good book featuring characters struggling with similar issues.
Read through for 26 young adult novels your teenager - and you! - can learn from, relate to, and, most importantly, enjoy.
Early Signs of Anxiety and Depression Could Be Detected in Children Straight From Birth
Although symptoms of anxiety and depression have the potential to materialize in kids as young as 2, a new study reveals that these early signs could be detected in newborns. Factors such as genetics, environment, and experiences all have an influence on a person's likelihood of exhibiting signs of mental illness, but the study, conducted by the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, claims that patterns in a newborn's brain connectivity could predict whether they may experience symptoms years before they happen.
"Brain connectivity patterns may indicate that for some children, their brains are developing along a trajectory that increases their risk for mental health symptoms as they develop," Dr. Cynthia Rogers, a child psychiatrist at Washington University in St. Louis and lead author of this study, told The Huffington Post. "It's important to note, however, that the experiences and environment that they are exposed to as they grow may alter these connectivity patterns making it more or less likely for these symptoms to develop."
The study looked at MRI brain scans of 65 full-term babies and 57 premature babies to see the patterns between their amygdalas - where the brain interprets fear - and other brain regions. They were then assessed at 2 years old for any early signs of anxiety or depression. Researchers found that whether the child was full term or preterm, certain connections between the amygdala and other parts of the brain - the insula and medial prefrontal cortex, which involve emotions, consciousness, planning, and decision making - were associated with a higher risk of early signs of anxiety and depression at 2 years.
"If we can understand what patterns of connectivity are related to early social and emotional impairments, we can then study what predicts those connectivity patterns," Rogers said. "We can evaluate whether there are experiences these children have while in the hospital or early in infancy that change these patterns for better or worse that we can aim to modify."
If you think your child may be exhibiting signs or symptoms of anxiety or depression, consult their pediatrician to discuss a potential course of action.

The Mini Version of Your Favorite Designer Bag Is Calling Your Name
I've always been a fan of small bags (shout out to my Givenchy Antigona mini!). I'm aware most of them can only hold the essentials: phone, wallet, keys, and, if I'm lucky, a water bottle. It's a challenge to downsize, for sure, but for the most part I love miniature bags because I don't feel like I'm dragging a dead weight around. Plus, my shoulder needs a break every now and then from my work tote.
But these pint-size designer offerings aren't just practical, they have another perk too: they're usually a few hundred dollars cheaper. For those on a budget, investing in the mini version of your dream bag is not only smart but efficient. You're basically getting the same style for less, and mini bags are infinitely cuter. Don't believe us? Just check out some of the micro options ahead.

OK, Stop Laughing - Ta-Ta Towels Are Actually a Really Genius Idea For Breastfeeding
OK, clearly you are looking at that picture – of the woman lounging about with a bizarre terry-cloth boob-holder wrapped around her breasts – and laughing. "What a joke!" you're probably thinking.
But hear me out.
The creator of the Ta-Ta Towel invented this product because she was sick of boob sweat while she was getting ready postshower and didn't want to be forced to wear a constrictive bra every minute of the day.
All well and good, but what she probably didn't realize about her bizarre-yet-clever idea is that it's even more genius for breastfeeding mamas - especially breastfeeding women like me who hate wearing bras and leak everywhere.
Here's why this silly Ta-Ta Towel is getting my solid, 100-percent-serious recommendation:
When I'm in the comfort of my own home, I like to nurse topless. It's really the best. I don't have to deal with nursing-bra clips, my baby isn't swatting away the fabric of my t-shirt, and I figure it's some great skin-to-skin bonding to boot. Plus, my overworked boobs can be as free as they need to be while churning out milk for a hungry infant.
There's only one big annoyance with my braless breastfeeding sessions: whichever nipple isn't currently being suckled by my bundle of joy is dripping like a leaky faucet. If I'd forgotten to grab a towel beforehand, which nine times out of 10 I have (I'm tired, give me a break), my tummy will end up getting soaked, and then over the course of the day, I'll notice the once subtle whiff of milk evolve into a rancid, eye-watering situation requiring a hot shower, for which I do not have time.
This Ta-Ta Towel, however, is the answer to my problem. It lets me still live my topless dreams – by wearing it, I'm still technically bra-free and sans shirt – but still sops up my leaking milk without me needing to have one hand pressed against my unused nipple. I can now use that free hand to check Facebook on my phone! Hidden benefit!
And, sure, it also helps with boob sweat, which is the least of my worries these days.
So, you might laugh at the thought of it (and balk at the $45 price tag, understandably), but I have a feeling if you just give it a try, the Ta-Ta Towel will be your new breast friend.
This Mom Gave Birth to 4 Babies in 11 Months and No, They're Not Quadruplets
A woman in Wales has given birth to four babies in just 11 months. No, they're not quadruplets, and yes, you read that right.
After welcoming her daughter in February 2015, Becky Johns and her partner, Jason, discussed having more children close in age to Mya - really close. The couple started trying for another baby right away and Becky got pregnant just a week after having Mya, but that's not even the most shocking part of the story.
To Becky and Jason's disbelief, they heard not one, not two, but three heartbeats at Becky's scan - triplets. "I had to stare at the screen just to make sure for myself," Becky told Barcroft Media. "And I counted the heartbeats one by one. It was true I was actually pregnant with triplets."
Although naturally conceived triplets tend to be rare, Becky's were even more so in that they each came from a separate egg, meaning three placentas and less chance of risks associated with the babies sharing a placenta. Becky gave birth to three healthy babies - Ryan, Phoebe, and Raya - via C-section last January.
"I was so huge by that time I could barely move and doctors wanted to get them out in case I went into labor early," Becky said. "I'd been carrying around nearly 15 pounds of babies. I couldn't believe it. But I was just so relieved they were all healthy and well."
Becky's wish for children close in age certainly came true, and the family couldn't be happier. Her 9-year-old daughter, Kayla, loves her baby brother and sisters, and Becky says that "it's lovely to think that Mya and the triplets will grow up so close in age."
