No, White Friend - You Weren't "Embarrassed" by Barack Obama

The following story, "No, White Friend - You Weren't 'Embarrassed' by Barack Obama," was originally published on JohnPavlovitz.com.

I remember the day after the Election, a friend of mine who happens to be white, remarked on social media that he "finally wasn't embarrassed of America and our President."

I sprained my eyes rolling them and they have never fully recovered.

Since then I've heard this sentiment echoed by more white folks than I can count, especially in recent months; supposed relief at once again having a leader who instills pride.

Since I don't have the time to ask each of the individually, I'll ask here:

So, you were embarrassed for the past 8 years, huh?

Really?

What exactly were you embarrassed by?

Were you embarrassed by his lone and enduring twenty-five year marriage to a strong woman he's never ceased to publicly praise, respect, or cherish?

Were you embarrassed by the way he lovingly and sweetly parented and protected his daughters?

Were you embarrassed by his Columbia University degree in Political Science or his graduating magna cum laude from Harvard Law School?

Maybe you were embarrassed by his white American and Black Kenyan parents, or the diversity he was raised in as normal?

Were you embarrassed by his eloquence, his quick wit, his easy humor, his seeming comfort meeting with both world leaders and street cleaners; by his bright smile or his sense of empathy or his steadiness - perhaps by his lack of personal scandals or verbal gaffes or impulsive tirades?

No. Of course you weren't.

Honestly, I don't believe you were ever embarrassed. That word implies an association that brings ridicule, one that makes you ashamed by association, and if that's something you claim to have experienced over the past eight years by having Barack Obama representing you in the world - I'm going to suggest you rethink your word choice.

You weren't "embarrassed" by Barack Obama.

You were threatened by him.
You were offended by him.
You were challenged by him.
You were enraged by him.

But I don't believe it had anything to do with his resume or his experience or his character or his conduct in office - because you seem fully proud right now to be associated with a three-time married, serial adulterer and confessed predator; a man whose election and business dealings and relationships are riddled with controversy and malfeasance. You're perfectly fine being represented by a bullying, obnoxious, genitalia-grabbing, Tweet-ranting, Prime Minister-shoving charlatan who's managed to offend all our allies in a few short months. And you're okay with him putting on religious faith like a rented, dusty, ill-fitting tuxedo and immediately tossing it in the garbage when he's finished with it.

None of that you're embarrassed of? I wonder how that works.

Actually, I'm afraid I have an idea. I hope I'm wrong.

Listen, you're perfectly within your rights to have disagreed with Barack Obama's policies or to have taken issue with his tactics. No one's claiming he was a flawless politician or a perfect human being. But somehow I don't think that's what we're talking about here. I think the thing President Obama did that really upset you, white friend - was having a complexion that was far darker than you were ever comfortable with. I think the President we have now feels much better.

Because objectively speaking, if what's happening in our country right now doesn't cause you great shame and doesn't induce the continual meeting of your palm to your face - I don't believe embarrassment is ever something you struggle with.

No, if you claimed to be "embarrassed" by Barack Obama but you're not embarrassed by Donald Trump - I'm going to strongly suggest it was largely a pigmentation issue.

And as an American and a Christian committed to diversity and equality and to the liberty at the heart of this nation - that, embarrasses me.

6 Documentaries That Will Shut Down Any Climate-Change Denier

Given President Donald Trump's denial of climate change and his recent action of pulling the US out of the Paris Climate Accord, now is probably an apt time to educate yourself on the environment. It's even more important when you realize that the present Environmental Protection Agency director is a climate science denier - and he's quite open about it.

Global warming is neither an engineered fallacy nor really even debated at this point. There is a broad consensus in the scientific community that climate change is occurring and heavily accelerated by humans.

An easy way to get educated on the matter? By watching a documentary, of course. We've compiled a list of environmental documentaries you can learn a lot from. Read on to see.

Running and Lifting in the Same Workout? Here Are the Shoes You Need

So, running shoes aren't designed for weightlifting, and training shoes aren't typically supportive enough for running, but what if you're taking a class that incorporates running and weights? Or if you're hitting the gym and you like to do a little mix of treadmill and floor work?

Girl, you need to get yourself a shoe that can do both. For classes like Orangetheory Fitness, Barry's Bootcamp, and Speedplay that mix a bit of weight training in with a treadmill running, you don't want to be changing shoes halfway (or sometimes a quarter way) through class. In these instances, we consulted some experts to share the best shoes that work for both short-distance running and strength training.

10 Lingerie Brands That Prove the French Do It Better

Lingerie has always been important to me. I can't really explain why, but there's nothing quite like wearing a pretty, lacy matching set to instantly make me feel sexy and empowered. Because of the hefty price tag that comes with quality underwear, it's not something that I often splurge on, but when I do, I always make sure to turn to the best labels available.

When it comes to beautiful lingerie, the French have always dominated the market, with some brands having been created as early as the 19th century - no wonder they have since perfected the art of comfortable yet elegant underwear! Here are 10 brands you should know about.

These Insanely Delicious Sundaes in a Pint Are Vegan, Gluten-Free, and Allergen-Free

Wow. We're a little stunned by how freakin' delicious these three pints from Perfectly Free are. The "bascially everything-free" ice creams wooed both us and our taste-testing colleagues, and we're already scrambling for another pint. While they're definitely not low-calorie (they're made from coconut cream and sugar - so, yum!), they're an exceptional option for anyone looking for a dairy-free, soy-free, gluten-free, peanut-free, tree-nut-free option.

If you've got dietary restrictions but love ice cream, this is a literal dream come true. Even our nonrestricted eaters liked this more than traditional ice cream!

When we opened the pints, we were enchanted by swirls and gobs of sundae topping. Each ice cream is a creamy vanilla coconut-based ice cream but topped with its respective flavor in an ooey, gooey sauce. Fudge Swirl, Caramel Café, and Strawberry Sundae were bringing serious scoop-shop vibes, with a cleaner edge.

"Best dairy-free I've had!"

Each pint's calories vary - a 1/2 cup serving brings in between 210 and 220 calories with 14 to 15 grams of sugar, 1 gram of protein, and 9 to 10 grams of fat. Unless you're not eating sugar, this is a treat that pretty much anyone with any dietary restriction can eat - and even if you have no restrictions (no rules!), you'll still enjoy it. Here's what everyone had to say about the flavors.

Fudge Swirl

  • "Super creamy! Not overly sweet - the fudge swirls are SO good!"
  • "Wow! The fudge is INSANELY good!"
  • "Fudge on fleek."
  • "Love it! Doesn't make my mouth or throat sticky."
  • "A little *too* chocolaty."
  • "Unlike other ice creams, there is enough fudge in this!"
  • "I generally don't like chocolate in my ice cream (I know, I'm a freak), but this is great!"
  • "Really good!"
  • "Better than regular ice cream."
  • "Obsessed with the fudge."

Strawberry Sundae

  • "WOW! LOVE!"
  • "Delishhhhhh!"
  • "Not a fan of strawberry, but this is very refreshing!"
  • "I don't like the smell of coconut, but I love this!"
  • "Delish!"
  • "Tastes like a shortcake!"
  • "Legit tastes like ice cream! Love this so much!"
  • "Yum, yum, yum. Best dairy-free I've had!"
  • "Tastes like a perfect ice cream."
  • "Just like the strawberry shortcake pops from the ice cream truck but better!"

Caramel Café

  • "GIMME GIMME GIMME."
  • "Love it, but wish it was just caramel (not coffee). Love the swirls, though!"
  • "Wish there was a stronger caramel flavor."
  • "Not too strong or sweet, but very refreshing."
  • "Tastes like a latte!"
  • "Tastes like a latte from Starbucks!"
  • "Rich and creamy - on par with Halo Top!"
  • "Has a bit of a coffee aftertaste . . . not loving this."
  • "This had a strange aftertaste."
  • "Really creamy and fab!"
  • "Delicious!"
  • "Wish it was more caramel and less Werther's grandma candy."

The Boston-based brand sells its delicious desserts at New England Whole Foods locations and supermarkets on the East Coast.

Izzie Lost 135 Pounds Without "Any Form of Strenuous Exercise"

Izzie Kennedy was diagnosed with a rare liver disease at just 14 years old, and her doctor told her that drastic weight-loss measures were necessary to save her life.

Izzie: Before

Instead of opting in for surgery, Izzie turned to her mom for advice - she introduced her to a weight-loss program called Slimming World, which changed the course of her life for the better. With this program, alongside a more active lifestyle (with simple movements!), she was able to get healthy and combat her liver disease.

POPSUGAR: What made you decide to start your weight-loss journey?

Izzie Kennedy: At the age of 14, I was diagnosed with a form of liver disease, which I was told could be greatly improved by losing weight. The doctor at the hospital informed me that unless I took measures to significantly reduce my weight, the next step that would be considered was weight-loss surgery. While I recognize this is an option for lots of people, for me personally, this acted as the real trigger for beginning my weight-loss journey, as I didn't want to undergo such a life-changing operation at such a young age.

During middle school, I had turned to food for comfort as a way of coping through a difficult family separation. On my way home from school, I would buy things like biscuits and sweets from the local shop and simply eat to eat, which at the time seemed to offer some form of solace. This was the time that my weight began spiraling out of control, and in the five years I was at middle school, I gained around 112 pounds, weighing around 290 pounds by the age of 15.

PS: What drew you to Slimming World specifically?

IK: My mom joined Slimming World with a friend. After a few weeks of seeing the amazing variety of foods she was eating and the fact she was losing weight too, I decided it was something that I could try, so I joined a few weeks later. It was the best decision I've ever made! My mom has also lost over 70 pounds now so we've been through the journey together.

"At my biggest, I couldn't even walk for more than a minute due to various health conditions complicated by my weight. Now, I tend to get in over 10,000 steps per day!"

I had been seeing various doctors since the age of 4, as my mom had growing concerns about my increasing weight. No matter what dietary advice we were given, by general practitioners or dietitians, nothing seemed to work, as I couldn't cope with the feeling of being deprived - something I have genuinely never felt with Slimming World.

The reason that I believe this program worked for me is due to the fact that it fit in so well with our family lifestyle. We could still enjoy our family favorite meals, like roast dinners and spaghetti bolognese, without having to make separate meals for each person. Also, the fact that I could still satisfy my sweet tooth by having a treat like a small candy bar each day meant that I always went to bed feeling satisfied.

PS: What's your favorite way to work out?

IK: I have a beautiful Labrador called Millie, who I love to walk for miles and miles a day with my friends at the beach. At my biggest, I couldn't even walk for more than a minute due to various health conditions complicated by my weight. Now, I tend to get in over 10,000 steps per day!

PS: What's your weekly exercise schedule?

IK: I don't really do any form of really strenuous exercise, so it's mainly just walking and running. During stressful periods in my life - for example, taking my exams - I find running to be a great stress reliever!

Izzie: After

PS: How do you keep workouts exciting?

IK: I'm very lucky to live in an area that is surrounded both by beautiful countryside as well as having the beach practically on my doorstep, so finding new local walks to go on with friends really helps me get out of the house and keep active.

PS: How much weight have you lost?

IK: To date, my total weight loss is 135 pounds.

PS: What was the first big difference, other than the number on the scale, that really made you feel proud and excited?

IK: Around six months after starting Slimming World, I had a follow-up appointment with the liver specialists. At this point I had lost around 30 pounds, but I was told that my liver condition had already begun improving and this simply gave me the boost I needed to continue on in my journey.

PS: How do you track your weight loss?

IK: I weigh in each and every week, as well as attend my Slimming World group. I find the group support that you receive hugely important. Being able to discuss and share recipe ideas with other people who are in the same situation as you helps keep the journey exciting, and at times that you may be finding staying on track difficult, there is always someone there to help lift your spirits.

PS: What's a typical day of meals and snacks?

IK: Breakfast: poached eggs and baked beans with grilled mushrooms and tomatoes on whole-wheat toast. Midmorning: some fruit like a banana or apple. Lunch: a baked potato filled with tuna and sweet corn and a big side salad. Midafternoon: A fat-free yogurt and some strawberries. Dinner: fajita rice bowl with salad. Evening: Oreo ice cream sandwich or a snack-size chocolate bar.

PS: Do you count calories? What's the range of calories you eat per day?

IK: No, I did try this before starting Slimming World, but I personally became too focused on the numbers and it really seemed to take away the enjoyment of both cooking and eating. I simply eat until I feel satisfied, filling up on "Free Foods" such as fruit and vegetables, lean meat, pasta, and rice.

Izzie: Before and After

PS: What are the healthy staples that are always in your fridge?

IK: It's so important to me that my fridge is always filled with fresh fruit and vegetables, as when life is manic, it makes it so much easier to reach in and choose something healthy!

PS: How do you strategize for meals out?

IK: I follow Slimming World's Food Optimizing plan now, and it really does allow you to still enjoy eating out. Whether that means asking for a baked potato instead of fries or cutting the fat from a steak before eating it, I never feel stuck when it comes to dining out with friends or family as there is always a good choice to be made.

"I truly feel that you can do anything you put your mind to, and there is a whole community of people waiting to support you every step of the way."

PS: Do you use a fitness tracker?

IK: I only really use the step counter on my iPhone, which has really helped to illustrate to me the difference in activity levels before and after my weight loss. At my biggest, my average step count was around 1,500 and it's now usually well over 10,000 per day! I now look forward to exercise, whereas before absolutely any kind of movement was so tough.

PS: What role did Slimming World play in your journey? Would you recommend it?

IK: The support and love that I have received from everyone at Slimming World has really been crucial to my journey and I honestly believe I wouldn't be where I am today without having joined. I'd love to try and reach out to other young people who are perhaps in a similar position to myself at the beginning, as I remember being there and feeling so lonely. It doesn't have to feel like that; there are so many people just waiting to welcome you and support you along the way. I have real friendships that I have made through Slimming World, and I look forward to catching up with them all each week for weigh-in!

PS: What advice do you have for anyone starting out on a weight-loss journey?

IK: I remember standing where you are now. It feels like there is no hope and that the whole world is against you. All I can say is that I hope you can find belief in yourself because I truly feel that you can do anything you put your mind to, and there is a whole community of people waiting to support you every step of the way.

Serious Question: Are Lauren Conrad and Lo Bosworth Still Friends?

We first met Lauren Conrad and Lo Bosworth on MTV's Laguna Beach in 2004, but it wasn't until The Hills that we got a better look at their close friendship. While it seemed like their bond was unbreakable, something mysterious happened in 2016; both Lauren and Lo stopped posting photos with each other on social media and they stopped attending red carpet events together. Lo didn't even congratulate Lauren on social media when she gave birth to her first child in July. It's still unclear what went wrong, or who knows, maybe nothing happened and they're still friends, but either way, here's a look back at their friendship.

GLOW Season 2 Is a Go!

If you haven't yet had time to watch Netflix's latest original TV series, you should take this weekend to familiarize yourself with GLOW, aka the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, especially since Netflix just renewed the series for season two!

This fictional account of forming the real-life 1980s all-female wrestling show stars Alison Brie, Marc Maron, Betty Gilpin, and about a dozen more quirky ladies who come together to film the pilot for what would go on to become a cultural phenomenon.

There are so many reasons we need the aforementioned season two. First off, there is still so much story to tell. The entire first season is about these ladies coming together with director Sam Sylvia (Maron) to film the GLOW pilot, which means the wrestling show is still in its infancy when season one ends. While GLOW has not been officially renewed, the buzz around the show is strong, plus the stars and creators are definitely in for more seasons if given the chance.

Executive producer Liz Flahive told Deadline that they really only scratch the surface of the characters in season one. "The first season we really take our time," said Flahive. "We're starting at the audition and we're going very slowly to when they get to find their characters, to how they get to the actual making of the pilot of GLOW. We're not quite at the moment where they are living their wrestling characters 24 hours a day. We're definitely starting to deal with the inner play of their selves and their wrestling personas and how those start to interact."

Meanwhile, Brie and Gilpin are already looking forward to when their characters are more seasoned wrestlers and therefore they get to do more impressive wrestling moves in the squared circle. "Betty and I sometimes fantasize about what would happen in season two, but I think most of it pertains to wrestling," Brie told Collider. "I can only imagine what we'll get into, as the ladies are shooting more episodes. I want to get in the ring and learn more big moves. I think that would be really fun."

Brie also told The A.V. Club that she and Betty watch WWE Raw and talk about using some of their most complicated moves. "Sometimes Betty and I will text each other videos of WWE wrestling and be like 'goals. Let's learn that one. Season two! Season four!'"

The original GLOW syndicated series ran four seasons, so four seasons on Netflix seems like a good place to start.

Truth Is, No Millennials Have Tried McDonald's Original French Fries

Did you know that McDonald's changed its original french fry recipe in 1990? Malcolm Gladwell of Revisionist History uncovers the story behind McDonald's french fries, what made the original fries so delectable, and why the burger conglomerate was forced to change its beloved recipe. Since the start of its history in the '40s, McDonald's fried its potato pieces in beef tallow. For years, the fry fat was known as "Formula 47," and it's what gave McDonald's fries its signature crispy exterior, fluffy interior, and rich, unbeatable flavor. Ray Kroc, the businessman responsible for expanding McDonald's into a mega franchise, waxed poetically about these french fries in his book Grinding It Out and claimed the making of McDonald's french fries was "sacrosanct" - in other words, the exceptional process and perfect result shouldn't be touched.

However, one American by the name of Phil Sokolof spent roughly $14 million dollars campaigning against saturated foods, like McDonald's french fries. Having survived a heart attack, he made it his life's mission to influence major food companies to remove saturated fats from popular foods. He paid for big billboards in Time Square to Super Bowl ad spots, threatening companies with more highly-positioned ads unless they swiftly removed saturated fats from the foods. Sokolof's efforts reached millions, and he eventually targeted McDonald's.

Due to the public pressure, McDonald's eventually complied in 1990 and began frying its potatoes for the first time ever in vegetable oil (a mix of canola, corn, and soybean). Little did McDonald's (or the rest of the world) know the unpleasant side effects that would incur. First of all, the taste and texture suffered. Malcolm Gladwell isn't the only American who recalls trying the new fries and immediately feeling disappointment and (dare I add) grief that he would never be able to enjoy the "World's Famous Fries" ever again. The heat of the fryers mixed with the oil spews a mist that coats the entire restaurant (so that's why McDonald's chairs and tables are always sticky) plus the overalls worn by fry workers, if stacked on top of one another, have been known to spontaneously combust! And we haven't even gone into the health concerns . . . I recommend listening to the full episode for more information on aldehydes.

Curious to see how today's millennials would respond to the old fries compared to the new ones, Malcolm went to a Mattson Food Lab, where he had some of America's top food scientists recreate both batches of fries for blind tasting. The results were unanimous. Everyone, including the Mattson scientists, Malcolm, and the millennials loved the OG beef tallow fries. McDonald's, please bring these sublime fries back!

Even if it's not going to happen in this lifetime, you can try making a similar version at home. Mattson scientists fried peeled russet potato matchsticks in beef tallow heated to 350°-360°F for roughly 3 minutes. French fry heaven ensues.

This Pasta Has 3 Times the Amount of Protein as the Regular Stuff, but How Does It Taste?

I recently gave up bread and pasta because eating it makes me feel like I swallowed a brick, so I was excited when I found this on the shelf on my recent grocery shopping trip. Pasta made from edamame?! I promptly threw it in my cart - I had to know how it tasted!

I've had lentil pasta, which I thought was pretty good, but this has 24 grams of protein per 200-calorie serving. Regular pasta has only seven grams. Edamame pasta wins in the fiber department, too, with 12 grams - regular pasta has a measly two grams. Furthermore, regular spaghetti has twice the amount of carbs, zero calcium, and 10 percent iron. Edamame noodles win again with 10 percent calcium and 45 percent of your daily iron!

This is really sounding too good to be true. So the million dollar question is, does it taste good? I really wanted this pasta to be amazing because it is so nutrition-packed, but to be honest, I had low expectations. I thought it'd taste like cooked grass, at best, but with my first warm bite, I thought, "this edamame pasta is actually delicious." It really is. It has the same soft texture as regular pasta, and a very mild edamame flavor, just as you'd expect.

It was yummy with a little olive oil and salt, but tasted even better with tomato sauce, fresh basil, and sauteed mushrooms. I will definitely be buying this edamame spaghetti again, and am so thrilled to have found a healthier alternative to pasta. I can't wait to try it with my avocado pesto!

In fact, after witnessing one big blowout between your cousins, you decided you didn't need a sibling of your own. Plus, there's all the extra attention you got from Abuela, right?

8 Things You Should Never Ever Say to Your Wedding Makeup Artist

As your wedding approaches and you are securing a makeup artist, please remember that he or she is in charge of your face on the biggest day of your life. If you want to get along perfectly with a makeup artist (like me!), there are a few comments that you might want to keep to yourself:

1. "My husband doesn't like when I wear lipstick."

My husband hates a lot of things that I do. As a result, I continue to do those things, which is why this comment rubs me the wrong way. Your look on your wedding day should be about YOU! Not your husband. In theory, we want to make sure that he thinks you look beautiful, but if he asked you to spend the rest of your life with him, you probably already have that one in the bag.

When you look in the mirror on your wedding day you should feel and look your best. Take his opinion into account - or pretend to, so his feelings aren't hurt. But omitting lipstick or anything else that might make you your most gorgeous to appease a man sets a bad tone.

2. "This is my third trial."

Makeup artists have different styles of makeup application, and we all have individual ideas of what makes a bride "beautiful." We also have a variety of favorite products that we utilize on our brides. Despite these differences, most makeup artists are able to hone their talents to cater to your needs and your idea of what makes a beautiful bride. If a bride finds herself hopping around from makeup artist to makeup artist and is never satisfied, this is a red flag for me. Often the problem lies in a bride's unrealistic dream of her wedding day; she envisions herself walking down the aisle as a Disney princess rather than the beautiful human that she is.

Reality check: you have flaws. Maybe you don't like your lashes or your skin tone or you have a zit. Embrace yourself and stop nitpicking every little thing about your face. Find an artist who you feel comfortable with, who uses products that you like, and make it work! That artist will be spending the bulk of your wedding day with you. Make sure it is someone you can trust, and you will be happy.

3. "I don't want you to come too early because my makeup has to last until midnight."

Yes. I know. I am in the business of applying makeup so that it will be flawless and last through the day and the night. You might need to touch up your lips or apply powder for shine but your face makeup will last. I will use primers and setting powders and sprays and glue to make sure of that.

When you want me to come do your makeup and your mother's makeup and the eight other bridesmaids, it's going to take a while - even if I bring an assistant. We will start early. There's no way around it. If a bride is nervous, I always recommend that she go last so she can rest easy that her face will be perfect all night.

4. "I just wash my face with soap and don't moisturize."

That statement is often followed with further information like, "I don't take my eye makeup off at night." This type of skin care negligence only leads to a face that feels like sandpaper and eyes that have black circles around them. If your skin is in bad shape and your eye makeup hasn't been taken off properly for years, no amount of makeup can help you.

Makeup simply does not sit well on unhealthy skin. If you are a "skin-abuser" and then you show me a picture of Gwyneth Paltrow and say, "I just want to look like this!" I can tell you right off the bat, "It's not going to happen." Please consider proper skin care at least six months prior to your wedding day. You don't have to do anything crazy, just proper cleansing, moisturizing, and the occasional face scrub will work wonders.

5. "What lipstick should I use?"

Often as I am packing up from a grueling five hours of makeup application on a wedding day, brides or bridesmaids will say expectantly, "So what should I use to touch up my lips?" Sometimes the expectation is that I will start doling out $28 lipsticks to everyone. Lip color is hard to choose, especially for an event. It should be chosen well before the event and PURCHASED. Do not wait until the day of to realize that you need a proper lip product.

6. "If I don't want a trial, can the price be cheaper?"

No. No it cannot. If anything I should increase the price if you don't have a trial because now we are both going to be anxiety-ridden on the day of your wedding. Not having a trial is ill-advised. You should at the very least meet with your artist ahead of time to discuss your expectations and show her a picture of what you like. To show up on the biggest beauty day of your life and expect perfection with no previous meeting is a recipe for disaster.

7. "I don't like blush, and I want a nude lip."

Color on your face can be scary if it's not what you're used to in your daily life. But please remember that this is not your daily life. Putting your body into a white gown, placing a tiara on top of a head of curls and bobby pins, and then walking around with no lipstick or cheek color doesn't add up.

This is an event like no other. Take the plunge and add a little color to your lips and cheeks and you will be happy - especially when you see your pictures.

8. "I don't want lashes - my eyelashes are long enough."

Sorry, but nobody's are. It's not just the dancing and cocktail hour we have to consider when we make this decision. The main objective here is to make sure you look absolutely fabulous in your wedding photos.

These photos, after being held hostage by your photographer for a year, will then find their way to an album for your coffee table and possibly a bunch of frames around your home. Those images will be looked at every day by you and your husband. When you are older and tired from breastfeeding your baby and caring for a toddler, you will gaze fondly at that photo as evidence that you were once stunning and full of life.

Your children will place that photo on a table at the entrance of their wedding, that 300 people will look at closely and say, "Look how gorgeous his mom was!" That photo will be placed in a collage at your funeral. Please consider all of this, and know that fake eyelashes are the most surefire way to look like an absolute bombshell.

Planning a wedding is stressful enough - avoid these mistakes and you will be halfway to having the most flawless face for your wedding day!

Protein-Packed Peanut Butter Cookies to Make All Your Dreams Come True

Did Sansa and Arya's Game of Thrones Reunion Hint at Jon Snow's Eventual Death?

As the battle for the Iron Throne continues and the White Walker threat gets closer to the people of Westeros, there's a Game of Thrones question I'm kind of afraid to ask: is Jon Snow going to die - again? Like, for real this time? As one half of the ice-and-fire equation, he obviously has a large role to play, and theories suggest that he'll lead the fight against the White Walkers. But I'm starting to worry that he won't survive the fight.

A single line in the latest episode might hint at Jon Snow's fate. The moment comes during Sansa and Arya Stark's Winterfell reunion as Sansa talks about their siblings' whereabouts. She mentions her reunion with Jon Snow, acknowledging that he'll probably be more excited to see Arya than he'd been to see her. Here's what she says:

"I hope he comes back soon. I remember how happy he was to see me, and when he sees you, his heart will probably stop."

Heart will stop? HEART will STOP? I know I'm taking her line literally, but crazier things have happened on this show (understatement) and it wouldn't be the first time that words carried more meaning than you might think at first.

What if he, I don't know, first sees Arya on the battlefield and throws himself in front of a White Walker to save her, sacrificing himself? What if Arya goes after Littlefinger and Jon shows up, sees what's happening, intervenes, and dies? Meanwhile, if he dies again, will Melisandre bring him back to life again? Can my OWN heart handle seeing him die again?

When people are brought back to life by the Lord of Light, it's because they still have a role to play. Jon Snow's role could be to bring his family back together, or spread the message of the White Walkers, or team up with Daenerys Targaryen to defeat them. But once his destiny is fulfilled, then what? He's . . . free to die again?

Listen, I honestly hope I'm wrong and I'm reading into that moment too closely. I hope none of the above takes place and he'll be among the last characters standing. Or, even better, sitting. On the Iron Throne. Fingers crossed.

Why Everyone on Wet Hot American Summer: 10 Years Later Looks So Familiar

Netflix's TV series Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, a prequel to the 2001 movie Wet Hot American Summer, has pulled off a rather amazing feat - it got nearly all of its original cast members to return for the follow-up series, Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later. The creators even managed to work around Bradley Cooper's unavailability by recasting the role of Ben with Adam Scott.

There are several other new faces as well, including a couple the show is pretending has been there the whole time, even going so far to edit them into old footage from the prequel and original film. So if you need a guide to the insanely funny ensemble cast, we're here to help.

The Worst Mistake People Make With Scrambled Eggs

Image Source: Getty / Nicholas Hunt

Making scrambled eggs is an art. It's one of the easiest dishes to whip up, but everyone has their own tips and tricks for doing it. If you talk to any chef, they will tell you their way is the best way. Take Bobby Flay, for example. I sat down with Chef Flay, a brand ambassador for the Drink Good Do Good campaign, which is using selfies to provide millions of Americans with fresh produce. He shared his secrets on how he makes his scrambled eggs. He also went as far as telling me what most people mess up when making them: "It's the salt," he said. "No salt until the end, because you want those smooth curves on the eggs, and the salt will ruin that."

He said he starts with cold butter and creme fraiche in a nonstick pan on medium heat. Just before the butter and creme fraiche are completely melted, he adds prebeaten eggs and stirs vigorously. "Add black pepper, but no salt," he explains. Then when they're three-quarters of the way cooked, he salts the eggs and takes them out of the pan.

"The scrambled eggs at [Chef Flay's NYC restaurant] Gato are cult-like, but they have a lot of extra stuff in them. This is just straightforward," he said. "But too many people do the salt wrong or overcook them. Get them out of the pan, because they will keep cooking." So pro tip, foodies: don't salt your scrambled eggs until the very end of the process, and you'll end up with a dish good enough to serve to Bobby Flay.

32 Jennifer Lopez Outfits That Were Meant to Be Seen From the Back

We all know that Jennifer Lopez is the queen of rocking naked dresses and ones that show off her legs, but what we love is when she wears a dress that leaves us staring from all angles - especially the back.

Who doesn't remember the dress she wore to the 2017 Billboard Latin Music Awards? Yes, it looks striking from the front, but the back was something else entirely. It was made up of just strings of fabric coming together to create shapes while still being totally see-through. We're telling you . . . Jennifer has a knack for keeping all eyes on her, but we certainly aren't mad about it.

I Found the Perfect Face Cleanser For When I'm Just Too Lazy to Deal

I've been reporting on beauty for a long time. Longer than I want to admit. So I know that properly cleansing your face, patting it dry, toning it, and applying serums and moisturizers (in the correct order) are critical steps in maintaining a healthy and balanced complexion. That said, I've never looked forward to these obligatory steps, let alone those that require me to add grainy exfoliators and globby masks to the already-long routine. I suppose you could write me off as lazy, but I just don't like beauty upkeep. I'm all about good hygiene - I'm not a monster - but I struggle to find the joy in spending my time at the sink. That said, I still do it. I still wash my face and switch out my cleansers depending on the season, and I still dab the creams and dot my eyes.

But I also skip it sometimes and head to bed with immense guilt, like I've neglected to feed my dog or lock the front door. To fix this, I've spent a lot of time searching for makeup wipes that I could store near my bed, but they've all failed me, leaving me ultradry with burning eyes and blotchy skin.

But two years ago, I received a bottle of Bioderma Micelle Solution Sensitive Skin, and everything changed. Micellar water has been touted as a miracle cleanser that doesn't need to be rinsed off, and while I typically use it as part of the aforementioned cleansing routine, I keep a second bottle on my bedside table for the nights when I'm just too darn lazy to do anything more than brush my teeth. On those nights, I grab the cotton rounds that I also store in my bedside table, lie down like the lethargic human I am, and wipe it all off. The makeup, the mascara, the gunk - it all comes off. And the best part is that because the solution is made for sensitive skin, it never burns my face or makes me red. It leaves me squeaky-clean.

Whether you're a proud lazy girl or an occasional loaf, I urge you to give this hack a try.

Um, Wow: Stranger Things Originally Had an Entirely Different Name

On Tuesday, Variety's Power of Young Hollywood event swept through LA, and we were on the scene to chat to some of the industry's brightest stars. On the red carpet, we spoke to the Emmy-nominated Shannon Purser from Stranger Things. Just when we thought we'd exhausted all things season one (including the ins and outs of her fan-favorite character, Barb), Purser dropped one hell of a fun fact: Stranger Things almost had a totally different name. "Before it was Stranger Things, it was called Montauk," Purser revealed. "It was supposed to take place in New York. So, kind of at the last minute, they opted for a small-town feel, and the Duffers thought of Stranger Things, and here we are."

Suffice it to say, moving the show to Hawkins, IN, was the best choice. The fact that everything went down in such a sleepy town made the chilling events surrounding Eleven, the Demogorgon, and the Upside Down that much more compelling. Now, as we head into the highly anticipated second season (which drops right around Halloween), we can't picture the show any other way. But just know, while you're watching the new trailers, getting to know the new characters, and inspecting the thrilling pictures, we almost landed in entirely separate city in an East Coast state with a completely different name.

16 Iconic Photos of Elvis Presley That Prove He Was the Ultimate Heartthrob

Elvis Presley was an icon for so many reasons - he knew how to sing, he knew how to dance, and he knew how to make girls go crazy with that smile. Like so many other greats before him, the musician and actor, famous for songs like "Jailhouse Rock" and movies like Blue Hawaii, left this world much too soon. Elvis was just 42 years old when he suffered a heart attack and died in August 1977. But despite his physical absence, he's still very much a part of pop culture. His good looks make new generations fall in love with him, his songs are still blasted on the radio, and his Graceland mansion in Tennessee is still a huge tourist attraction. To celebrate his life and your unwavering crush on him, look at some of his best moments ahead that will still make you weak in the knees.

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively's Wedding Was Straight Out of a Nicholas Sparks Movie

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively are one of Hollywood's biggest couples, but their 2012 wedding was incredibly under-the-radar. Even though they were secretive about their nuptials and made sure no details leaked to the press leading up to the big day, they still managed to pull off a ceremony that was straight out a romantic movie (literally). But we wouldn't expect anything less from the picture-perfect pair. As they get ready to celebrate their five-year anniversary this year, see the sweetest details about their wedding ahead.

Katy Perry Feels "Liberated" by Short Hair: "I Have Surrendered to My 30s"

When Katy Perry got the chop seen 'round the 'Gram right after announcing her split with Orlando Bloom, just about everyone assumed this was another classic case of the post-breakup hair phenomenon. But, in a new interview with W magazine, Katy let it be known that this haircut was all for herself, thank you very much.

After calling the look, "so much fun," the singer got serious. "I feel so liberated with this hair now. In general, I feel 360-degrees liberated all around. Whether it's politically, mentally, spiritually, sexually. I feel liberated from all the things that don't serve me." Basically, Katy is all of us leaving the salon after a blowout. Can we get a "YESSSS girl?!"

The 32 year-old singer also pointed to her age as a big factor for hew new look. "I'm surrendering and embracing my 30s. You couldn't give me anything to go back to my 20s." (PREACH).

This isn't the first time Katy got candid about her bleached cut. In an emotional livestream back in June, Katy reiterated that her new, symbolic crop represents her "authentic self".

Katy also admitted that she's an unapologetic shower singer. Her go-to is none other than will.i.am's 2008 masterpiece, "I Like to Move It." According to Katy, "That's very fun - singing in the shower and scrubbing!"

So basically, this is actual footage of Katy's morning routine:

Calling It! It Cosmetics Secret Sauce Will Be Sephora's Hottest-Selling Face Cream Soon

The surface of my vanity is like my pores after a SoulCycle class: clogged. I am swimming in creams, serums, and lotions - all meant to give me softer, smoother skin. Beauty shopping can also feel like this. And friends always ask me: what the f*ck should I actually buy? What should I use?! SOS!

I love IT Cosmetics, because it really works (I've been using the skin care for about a year and have been satisfied with the results), and the products are not overly complicated. I often recommend friends buy from this line when they feel confused over beauty choices. It Cosmetics is an easy line to understand and use. For example, It Cosmetics Confidence Cream in a Moisturizer is one of my favorite travel creams. It's the only one I need to bring since it's hydrating enough to use at night, but lays nicely under makeup. I have minis of it stashed in my daily gym bag and always pack it on weekend trips.

The brand just launched a new face cream for Fall, and I am already predicting it's going to be a huge hit. It's called the It Cosmetics Secret Sauce ($68), and it's basically the antiaging version of Confidence Cream. Like the latter, it's lovely for evenings but works just as well during the day. As an early tester, I can confirm it doesn't pill at all under makeup.

But now let's get into what makes it so damn special. The formula is just gorgeous! It could be the love child of La Mer Soft Cream (thanks to its dewy texture) and Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream (because it also gives you a subtle glow). The gentle white lotion melts into skin, feels slightly cooling, and then stays dewy for hours. My husband and I both put it on before watching our evening TV shows and collectively noticed it help our skin felt moist for three episodes of Parks and Recreation. That said, it doesn't feel greasy at all, and as I mentioned, it layer easily under foundation.

Secret Sauce was formulated with plastic surgeons and while it's paraben-free, it does contain a lot of amazing ingredients. It has fermented sugarcane and rice to make skin plumper, as well as coconut water - which we all know is a hydrating superstar. Sea kelp, green and black tea, white ginseng, and pumpkin all deliver more nourishing, antioxidant benefits. So while it's adding moisture back into the skin, it's also improving it over time.

But there's more! Collagen, peptides, and hyaluronic acid all help fill in fine lines and deal with sun damage. The glowy result I mentioned come from fine diamond powder, vitamin C, and licorice root. Basically, this cream makes you look radiant.

After a days of using it, the fine horizontal lines on my forehead filled in. Below, you can see clinical results on mature skin.

And finally, the packaging is on-trend. The pearlescent tub looks like a unicorn created it. You need it in your holographic, rainbow-loving life. Super Sauce is available online now and in Sephora stores come September.

Basically, if you need to KonMari your stash (me: all the time, always), this one will bring you joy.

This Muslim Bride Wore Zero Makeup at Her Wedding - and Why She Did It Is Eye-Opening

For many women, a wedding is the time to go full-on, head-to-toe glam. It's the reason they do countless trials with multiple makeup artists before picking a final beauty look. It's why they spend thousands on (often multiple!) dresses and diamonds. New bride Tasnim Jara, however, decided to do the opposite. She wore zero makeup, didn't buy a new gown, and wore no jewelry to prove a powerful point about the way women get pressured by societal beauty standards.

Jara, a Bangladesh-based healthcare activist, wrote about her experience in a public post on Facebook. "I was troubled by the singular image of a bride that our society has - with tons of makeup, a weighty dress and mounds of jewelry weighing her down," she wrote, further explaining that people have come to measure a woman's financial success, family status, and more based on how she physically looks at her wedding. On top of that, within the Muslim community, traditional weddings often have brides wearing piles of gold bracelets, necklaces, and head ornaments on top of elaborate, heavy makeup.

"I have hardly attended any wedding where I didn't overhear people gossiping: 'Is the bride pretty enough?' 'How much gold does she have on?'" Jara continued, "Growing up listening to these questions, a bride feels pressured to look for the best makeup artist in town, pays a hefty amount in time, money, and energy, and ends up looking nothing like herself."

A bride feels pressured to look for the best makeup artist in town, pays a hefty amount in time, money, and energy, and ends up looking nothing like herself.

Jara revealed that she faced resistance from her family for her decision to go all-natural on her big day - she claims some didn't even want to take a photo with her because she didn't look like their image of a bride. Using her personal story, she pleaded with people to think critically about emphasizing too much importance on makeup and adornments.

"I feel that we need to change this mindset. A girl should not need a whitening lotion, a gold necklace, or an expensive sari to be accepted as a bride or to make her feel confident," she wrote, sharing that on top of wearing no makeup or accessories, she wore a hand-me-down sari from her grandmother. "People may call it simple, but it was very special to me, for what I believe in and what it means to me."

She made sure to emphasize that she isn't judgmental of or against women who want to wear makeup or expensive clothes ("I am all in for that," she said). She did explain, however, "It is a problem when she loses her agency in deciding what she would like to wear on her wedding day. When society forces her to doll up and look like a different person, it gives a message that the authentic look of a girl isn't good enough for her own wedding."

At the end of her note, she thanked her new husband: "Special shoutout to this person beside me, Khaled, who has not only supported me unconditionally but also beamed at me with so much pride for taking a stance against the stereotypes."

Props to Jara for staying true to herself. It's so real: brides-to-be face absurd expectations to look perfect on their wedding day. Let her story be a reminder that, at the end of the day, it's your face and your body and you should do whatever makes you feel like the best version of yourself no matter what people say.
