Employees Say This Company's Perks Save Them "Countless Hours"
The following post was originally featured on Fairygodboss.
These days, having a full-time job often leaves you with very little free time - and when you do get to enjoy a few precious hours outside of work, you're probably trying to squeeze in as much QT with family and friends as possible. This means going to the doctor, getting to the gym, or just prioritizing your health in general sometimes seems nearly impossible.
It shouldn't be this way, though - and Time Inc. gets that. That's why they've developed some amazing health and wellness programs, as well as family-friendly benefits, that help employees save time and stay healthy when things get crazy. Moreover, Time Inc.'s programs enable employees to bring their best physical selves to work each day.
We spoke to Teri Lukin, who heads Time Inc.'s Wellbeing Program. She filled us in on some of the numerous perks that the company provides, including an onsite health center (which gives employees access to primary healthcare); community groups that help employees network; onsite yoga; short-term backup and emergency care options for both children and adults; annual flu shots, mammography, and biometric screenings; fitness challenges; Weight Watchers meetings; a meditation series; on-site massages; and spring and fall walking clubs at lunchtime.
"Our employees' health and well-being is one of our top priorities," Teri told us. "From wellness workshops to onsite health screenings and classes, we strive to create programs and opportunities that make it easy for our employees to stay healthy, when they're busy with work and everyday life."
Time Inc. will also hook you up with a personal health advocate who can help you and eligible family members resolve healthcare and insurance-related issues.
Cami, Time Inc.'s associate director of consumer marketing and revenue, explained to us how some of these benefits add value to her work experience. "Beyond the pride that comes from working for a company with such well-respected brands are the benefits that come with the programs and conveniences offered to staff members," she says.
While she's participated in many of Time Inc.'s programs over the years, she points to two that she's found particularly valuable: the Weight Watchers At-Work Program and the Working Parents' Support Group. "My success at losing 25 pounds on Weight Watchers was definitely helped by making it convenient to attend meetings and having colleagues that truly support and share at the meetings," she explains.
Cami adds that it was especially helpful to have a Working Parents' Support group at her office when she was a new parent. "It was really helpful to have other parents to lean on and get advice from when I became a parent and throughout the school years."
In addition, Cami loves that some of Time Inc.'s programs have made it easier to deal with dreaded errands, like going to the DMV. "I only recently found out that we offer DMV vision testing in our Health Center that allowed me to mail in my form and skip the lines at the DMV," she says. "That is a huge relief/time-saver!"
Speaking of time-savers, imagine what life would be like if you didn't have to worry about fitting visits to the doc or dentist into your schedule. How amazing would it be if you could avoid the stress that comes with spending an hour in the waiting room before even seeing your doctor . . . all while you're already an hour away from your office and in danger of missing your next meeting?!
Gil, a senior finance manager at Time Inc., explains: "The Health Center has saved me countless hours that I would have spent traveling to/from doctors and waiting when I've had ailments ranging from strep throat and conjunctivitis to orthopedic injuries. Our nurse practitioner has been able to quickly diagnose and resolve the issue."
"The flu shot given every fall has prevented me from getting the flu over the past 20+ years," Gil adds. "The health screenings are very helpful in that I can keep tabs on my blood work/results and make any needed changes in my lifestyle/eating choices to keep everything at a heart healthy level."
Beyond saving time and encouraging good health, Time Inc.'s perks help moms and dads make things work. "The Backup Dependent Care program has proven to be an invaluable benefit countless times when my son is sick or his school is closed," says Jenni, a compensation director at Time Inc. "Rather than be forced to miss work, I've been able to book quality care last minute at a low cost."
If reading about these incredible perks is making you jealous, we hear you. Good news, though - Time Inc. is hiring, so you can check out their open positions today . . . and perhaps one day soon you'll score an awesome job and an awesome work-life balance!
Cory Booker Has a Plan For Making Weed Legal in the US - Here's Why It Just Might Work
The United States has an incredibly complicated relationship with marijuana. More than half of all drug-related arrests in the US are related to cannabis, and we're not talking about a small number of people. Between 2001 and 2010, there were a staggering 8.2 million marijuana-related arrests, and almost all of them were for mere possession of the drug. This would be understandable if we took a common stand or had a national policy in place, but instead the rules and regulations vary from state to state, from full-on legalization to complete criminalization. As a result, we've got a patchwork of laws across the country that are often murky and always inconsistent. It's a recipe for disaster, and it should come as no surprise that there are millions who have suffered overzealous punishment in the hands of our nation's criminal justice system.
The Plan to Finally Fix Our Pot Problem
New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, however, has a strategy. On Aug. 1, he announced a long-teased piece of legislation: the Marijuana Justice Act.
"Our country's drug laws are badly broken and need to be fixed," Booker said in a statement. "They don't make our communities any safer - instead, they divert critical resources from fighting violent crimes, tear families apart, unfairly impact low-income communities and communities of color, and waste billions in taxpayer dollars each year." The best way to deal with this systemic pattern of damage, therefore, is to stop doing what we're currently doing - and try something else.
How This Law Could Fix Our Broken Drug Policies
What this new act proposes is to completely legalize marijuana on a federal level. This would enable the fair trade and regulation of the drug on the open market. It would also work retroactively, giving individuals who are currently serving prison terms for pot-related crimes the ability to petition a court for a resentencing. Booker emphasizes the particular strain current marijuana laws have put on minority communities. "Descheduling marijuana and applying that change retroactively to people currently serving time for marijuana offenses is a necessary step in correcting this unjust system," he says. "States have so far led the way in reforming our criminal justice system and it's about time the federal government catches up and begins to assert leadership."
The bill doesn't purport to be the answer to all the problems facing America right now. It does not address harder drugs like opiates - which are fueling a nationwide health crisis - but it does look to fix some things we have the ability to change. It also isn't blind to the fact that we need to invest not in the War on Drugs, but in rebuilding the communities most damaged by the failed policies of the past. The bill would hold back criminal justice funding from any state that failed to bring down its incarceration and arrest rate. That funding would then be funneled into a larger national program supporting job training, reentry programs, community center investment and other programs targeting minority communities hardest hit by an unprecedented rise in pot-related criminal arrests.
Why This Particular Bill Matters So Much
Booker isn't the first to concoct radical legislation aimed at turning drug statistics around, but he is certainly the most hopeful. In a Facebook Live video announcing the bill, he spoke to how well the states that have legalized weed are doing, which is a far cry from the current state of affairs on a national level. The senator is well aware that he will face skepticism, pushback, and legal hurdles from those who aren't as sold on the possibilities as he is - including from the extraordinarily marijuana-averse attorney general, Jeff Sessions. But that hasn't deterred Booker, who stated thoughtfully in his video announcement, "I believe the federal government should get out of the illegal marijuana business." And if anyone can do it, it's Cory Booker.

I've Finally Found Swimsuits I Don't Hate My Body in, and It's All Thanks to This Brand
I'd consider myself an "in-betweener" when it comes to size - not plus size, but not fit and toned, and definitely round around the edges ("apple-shaped," if we're using the fruit-size guide). I'm not especially self-conscious in clothes, but when I'm wearing a swimsuit, I hate everything about my body. All I see are doughy, jiggly bits.
That is, until I discovered Aerie one-piece swimsuits. I've known all about Aerie and its #AerieReal campaign for a while now, but I had never tried on the brand's swimsuits before this Summer. What inspired me to give them a try was an Instagram from one of my favorite body-positivity champions, Jenna Kutcher. She regularly posts photos of herself in Aerie swimsuits, with honest captions about her struggles with body image. I thought, if she can post photos of herself in a swimsuit for her thousands of followers to see, I can find a way to feel good in one as well.
I ordered a ruffly, textured, black one-piece with cutouts (sadly no longer available) that was sexy and flattering and comfortable - I couldn't believe how good I felt in it. After wearing it in public, I was even more confident; so much so, in fact, that I went back and bought two more swimsuits in different styles: an olive one with piping and flower cutouts ($28, originally $47), and a light-gray one with a very deep tie-up front ($27, originally $50).
For once, I was enjoying Summer to its fullest - paddle boarding, laying out by a pool, swimming in a lake - without covering my stomach, self-consciously wrapping a towel around my waist, or hiding in a cover-up. I wasn't even comparing myself to the other bodies around me. It's amazing the freedom you can have to think about other things, focus on relationships and self-care, and just generally feel happy without anxiety when you're not bogged down by self-consciousness. So thank you, Aerie, for making such a point to celebrate bodies of all sizes and for creating a swimsuit that makes me feel good about my body. I'm a fan for life!
Watch Luis Fonsi Explain the Lyrics of "Despacito" - the Meaning Might Shock You
Luis Fonsi is spilling all of the sexy tea behind the lyrics of "Despacito." In a video for Genius, the Puerto Rican singer opened up about the song's origins, saying: "I wish I had a better story, but, honestly, I woke up one morning with 'Despacito' in my head. It was that simple and that obvious." But Luis came around pretty quickly, giving himself a little more credit for the sensual lines behind the song.
Going line by line in the song, Luis revealed "Despacito" talks about having uncontrollable feelings for a woman but wanting to slow down things and enjoy them as they heat up. We already knew that, but did you also know that he purposely incorporated the phrases "this is how we do it down in Puerto Rico" and "ay, bendito" in a nod to his country?
In case you didn't already know, the song has been on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart for weeks and shows no sign of stepping down from the No. 1 spot. Watch the video above to find out what else Luis had to say about the lyrics, plus how Justin Bieber asked to be on the remix.
Kesha Frees Herself From Her Past in the Stunning Music Video For "Rainbow"
In the lead-up to Kesha's first album since 2012, Rainbow, the singer-songwriter dropped a handful of beautiful singles (as well as one seriously kickass one) with emotional personal essays to go along with each. On Friday, the same day Rainbow debuted, Kesha released the music video for the titular single. In an essay for Refinery29, Kesha explained the meaning behind her raw lyrics, and how she hopes the song encourages self-love. "There's a line in 'Rainbow' that I really love: 'What's left of my heart is still made of gold,'" she wrote. "I truly believe that. It's true for me and it can be true for others, too. I know giant pieces of my heart have been held captive in the past. But not anymore. And what's left is f*cking pure gold and no one can touch that." Listen to it above.

50 Weird Laws From Across the World
The world is an interesting place, to say the least, and it has some interesting laws and rules to go along with it. While some laws that are written seem completely obvious and make you scratch your head - No bear wrestling! No taking lions to movies! - some are completely off the wall. In fact, some are so out there that you have to wonder if they're even enforced. While you shouldn't necessarily let some silly laws completely drive your travel plans for the future, you might want to make sure that you don't do anything illegal next time you're in a new place. Curious what we're talking about? Read on for 50 of the most absurd laws from around the world.
You'll Stare For Hours at These Mesmerizing Dotwork Tattoos
We'll just say it: these are the most impressive tattoos we've ever seen. Dotwork tattoos are comprised entirely of - you guessed it - dots and are often created by hand instead of machine, resulting in truly magnificent (though time-consuming) masterpieces. Anything you'd like to pay homage to can be immortalized in a dotwork tattoo, whether it's your favorite pet, vacation destination, or just a simple arrow design. No matter what you choose to get, the results will be awe-inspiring.
5 Tips to Help You Run Safely in the Summer Heat Wave
Tired of running in the heat and humidity? No matter what part of the country you run in, you're likely already sweating your Summer runs as you prep for Fall races. To cope, we have you covered with the five best ways to avoid burning out before you finish your Summer miles.
1. Know the numbers.
You likely already know to check the temperature before planning your Summer runs, but it's also imperative that you check the humidity. Humidity is the moisture content of the air and the combination of humidity and heat is what makes Summer runs difficult and potentially dangerous. During every run, your body's core temperature increases, causing you to sweat, and your body naturally cools itself down when the sweat evaporates from your skin. High humidity makes it impossible for the sweat to efficiently evaporate from your skin, leaving your body defenseless against its rising core temperature.
When you look at your weather app, make sure to note the humidity and the "feels like" or "heat index" in addition to temperature. The humidity is most likely to negatively impact your run when it surpasses 40 percent. If you can't avoid the heat and humidity in your part of the world, opt for a treadmill run or choose your time of day wisely.
2. Know the danger signs.
High temperatures and humidity levels can have potentially dangerous side effects that go beyond discomfort and a slow pace. Listen to your body and be on the lookout for any signs of physical or mental discomfort that can happen to newbie runners and professionals alike. Physical symptoms of heat-related illness may include excessive fatigue, nausea, dizziness, or inability to maintain proper form while running. Mental symptoms of heat-related illness include feeling cool despite the heat and confusion.
If you wear a heart rate monitor when you run, keep a close eye on your heart rate and stop and take a walk break if you exceed your normal heart rate zone. If you experience any physical or mental discomfort or symptoms of heat-related illness, stop your run, find a shaded spot, and elevate your legs to allow your body to cool down naturally.
3. Run by feel.
High Summer temperatures and escalating humidity levels will not naturally lead you to PR a training run. Instead of being a slave to your stats, apps, and GPS gear, run according to feel and not by pace. Allowing yourself to slow down and take walk breaks as needed is perfectly acceptable when finishing a Summer training run.
4. Watch what you eat and drink.
As your body has to work harder to regulate its core temperature, less blood flow is available to your GI tract, making anything you drink or eat susceptible to causing runner's trots (diarrhea). Drinking plenty of water before, during, and after your workout not only keeps your body cooler, but it's the least likely culprit to cause the unwanted stomach issues.
If your run is over 30 minutes in the heat, be sure to add electrolytes in the form of a sports drink, but avoid gels that may cause stomach distress. If you need to eat before you head out, try a handful of pretzels or a glass of tomato juice - the extra salt will allow your body to sweat more efficiently and better regulate its temperature.
5. Dress for the heat.
Opt for light-colored, moisture-wicking clothing over cotton fabrics to help the sweat evaporate from your body. If you need something on your head to block the sun, wear a visor instead of a hat. The visor will block the sun from your eyes while allowing heat and moisture to evaporate from your head. No matter what time of day you choose to run, if the sun's up, wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 to protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. And if your long run is scheduled for more than two hours, take the necessary time to stop and reapply. When shopping for sunscreen, be sure to choose the formula that won't run into your eyes when you sweat (think stick formulas over lotion formulas!).
Summer heat and humidity pose significant dangers for runners, but attention to the tips above will ensure that you are ready for your Fall race!
The Amount of Sugar in Soda Is Truly Mind-Boggling
The news on sugary drinks isn't good. One 2015 study attributed 184,000 deaths per year to consumption of sweetened beverages. Too much sugar (as well as sweetened drinks) increases your risk of heart disease, causes diabetes, weight gain, and impairs brain power.
So obviously, you know that soda isn't a health food, but sometimes you have to be confronted with the cold, hard reality. That's why we created this chart comparing popular brands of soda with the number of grams of sugar contained in one can of each. Be prepared to be sugar shocked.
| SODA | GRAMS OF SUGAR | |
|---|---|---|
| Coca-Cola | 39 | |
| Pepsi | 41 | |
| Sprite | 38 | |
| 7 UP | 38 | |
| Fanta Orange | 28 | |
| Crush Orange | 43 | |
| A&W Root Beer | 45 | |
| Barq's Root Beer | 45 | |
| Mountain Dew | 46 | |
| Dr. Pepper | 40 |
*Per 12-ounce can
The American Heart Association suggests that women consume no more than 25 grams of sugar per day. For men, that recommendation caps at 36 grams per day. To get an even clearer picture of just how much you're drinking, think of this in teaspoons. One teaspoon of sugar equals four grams. Therefore, a can of soda with 40 grams of sugar contains 10 teaspoons of the sweet stuff. Take a minute and picture it. That's what you're drinking.
For even more perspective, consider that you could eat nearly nine Oreos, a bag of Sour Patch Kids, or a slice of birthday cake.
If you're grabbing a soda on occasion, get the smallest size possible. (Many brands offer mini cans in a respectable eight-ounce size.) Still, if you're a woman, even a small can may put you over your sugar limit for the day. (Meaning, it's a trade-off for desserts and anything else that has sugar in it, like sweetened yogurts, sauces, breads, and flavored oatmeal.)
Your best bet is to stick with water (spruce it up by adding fruit slices, full berries, and herbs), unsweetened iced tea, or no-sugar-added or lightly flavored sparkling waters, like LaCroix or Spindrift.
11 DIY Beauty Remedies Your Grandma Always Talked About That Actually Work
Every abuela has one: that wild concoction she whips up from ingredients in her kitchen and swears by every time you have a pimple, dry skin, unruly hair - you name it. As kids, most of us rolled our eyes and went along with it, but we've done a little digging, and it turns out maybe Grandma wasn't so crazy after all. Many of those beauty recipes actually work! Warning: do try these 11 practices at home for smooth skin and silky hair - or get these beauty buys that are also grandma-approved.
1. Using mayonnaise as a deep conditioner for healthy hair.
According to hairstylist Nathaniel Hawkins, this old-school method works because of the fat to protein ratio. "The oil softens the hair, making it shinier - and the protein in the eggs will make strands stronger." He recommends applying the treatment to dry hair, and leaving it on as a mask for 15-20 minutes. Shampoo twice, and condition afterwards. But, Hawkins notes, this treatment works best for hair that isn't fine or limp.
2. Dabbing nails in olive oil for a healthier look.
Nail expert Stephanie Stone debunked the myth (common in Dominican culture) that rubbing garlic on nails will make them strong (according to studies, it has no benefit). But, she says, applying olive oil (a popular DIY beauty ingredient in Puerto Rico) on nails and cuticles throughout the day is a great way to improve their health. "Keeping your hands and nails moisturized is key, especially if you're trying to repair damaged nail beds. I'd also recommend applying it lightly throughout the day instead of a full on soak. But consistency is key!"
3. Coconut oil as a body moisturizer.
"This one 100% works," says dermatologist (and Sofia Vergara's derm!) Dendy Engelman, M.D., of coconut oil for soft skin, a popular technique in many Latin American countries. "Coconut oil is mostly made up of saturated fats and medium-chain fatty acids, which help repair the skin barrier, trap water to hydrate skin, and also reduce inflammation. And recent studies show it's also a great treatment for eczema."
4. Adding honey to hair conditioner for softer tresses.
A custom common in Caribbean Latin America, honey is a natural moisturizer, which Hawkins says does work to help rehydrate your locks. And using unprocessed honey will give you an extra bonus: it's full of enzymes that will help create a healthy scalp and prevent dandruff.
5. Agua maravilla to fight blemishes.
Also known as witch hazel, this is common in many Latino families, especially from Puerto Rican and Dominican backgrounds. Engelman says it works because the mixture contains anti-inflammatory, astringent, and antibacterial properties. Engelman also recommends Dickinson's Original Witch Hazel Refreshingly Clean Towelettes ($6) to control blemishes and calm bug bites.
6. Washing hair with Coca-Cola for shine.
This is a long-time favorite technique among not just Latino families, but celebrities like Suki Waterhouse. Hairstylist Nunzio Saviano gives this traditional trick the thumbs up: "The acidity closes the hair cuticle, which makes it look healthy and shiny. But be careful: the sugar can leave your hair sticky, so you might need to rinse it out quickly. Apple cider vinegar is an alternative that might not be as messy!"
7. Beach sand as a skin exfoliant.
"Sand is essentially finely granulated rocks, so it's perfect to remove excess dry skin cells," Engelman says. "But because it's so abrasive, I'd only recommend you use it to exfoliate feet. It might be too harsh for other parts of your body."
8. Manzanilla grisi shampoo to lighten hair.
Saviano says that this traditionally Mexican and South American product - which contains Flor de Manzanilla and claims to both wash and lighten hair - does work, but he would use it sparingly. "This will maintain your tone and even lighten it at times, but if you use it too much, your color might become dull or even fade."
9. Grape skin paste for glowing skin.
Grapes are a gold mine, says Engelman. "They'll have a brightening effect over time because they contain vitamins B6, C, and A, and minerals like potassium, magnesium, selenium, and flavonoids, which act as antioxidants and remove toxins from the skin."
10. Sugar and lemon juice as an antiaging exfoliant.
According to Engelman, the sugar crystals act as an exfoliator, sloughing away dead skin, while the lemon juice helps peel away dead skin cells because of their content of alpha hydroxy acid (which is found in many antiaging treatments). Exfoliating is important, Engelman says, "because as we age, our skin doesn't shed as effectively. Plus, getting rid of dead cells helps your moisturizers penetrate better."
11. Avocado for healthy cuticles.
"Actually, rubbing avocado oil on cuticles is more effective than actual avocado," says Stone. But good news for avocado lovers: "Avocados in a healthy, balanced diet will help you see overall improvement in your hair, skin, and nails, too." Bring on the guacamole!
The Cast of To All the Boys I've Loved Before Is Already Looking Pretty Perfect
If you've read To All the Boys I've Loved Before, the first novel in Jenny Han's bestselling trilogy, then you're probably already obsessed with it. If you haven't, don't worry - you have plenty of time to fall in love with the YA books before they hit the big screen (the first one only recently began production). The story follows Lara Jean Song Covey, a teenager whose secret love letters to her former crushes accidentally get sent out. To avoid admitting her past feelings, she fakes a relationship with one of them, but she quickly realizes she may not be pretending after all.
Details about the movie, including the cast, have been slowly coming in over the past few weeks, and Han has even been sharing adorable set photos on social media. She also expressed her excitement over the fact that her diverse characters, which aren't typically seen as leads in the predominantly white romantic comedy genre, get three movies with its sequels, P.S. I Still Love You and Always and Forever, Lara Jean. "The most important thing for me as the author is seeing an Asian American girl in the starring role, and with this movie, we get to see not one but THREE!" she wrote. "That is truly groundbreaking."
60+ 1-Pan Dinners That Are Ready in an Hour or Less
Let's face it: even the most enthusiastic cooks can fall into a takeout and delivery rut during especially busy times. While transforming raw ingredients into a tasty meal is pretty magical, the postmeal cleanup can be enough of a deterrent to make cooking midweek seem impossible. If you've felt this way as of late, a one-pot or -pan meal may be the answer. The secret of many a savvy cook, these minimal-cleanup meals are low on fuss and high on flavor. This collection of recipes is particularly geared toward busy weeks, as all of the recipes are both one-pot or -pan and take an hour or less to cook.

A Solution to Every Bra-Fitting Problem You've Ever Had
I don't know about you, but it's rare that I slip into a bra and it fits me perfectly - I'm talking no gaps around the cup, straps pulled evenly, and underwire snug, but comfortable. But just because adjustments may have to be made, doesn't mean your bra doesn't fit.
We talked to lingerie expert Jenny Altman about all of the bra issues under the sun, and she had a hack for each one of them. Sometimes, a quick fix like "scooping" is the answer, but in other cases, it's time to invest in new intimates. Scroll for a full list of common problems and read up on Jenny's solutions, then shop her favorite picks on the market, and learn how to find your own bra size right at home.
If your bra feels a little off: The first thing you need to do each time you put on your bra is to scoop. Breast tissue tries to conceal itself as backfat, underarm fat, and spillage. Shift everything to where it belongs - in the cup!
If your bra is riding up in the back: The band is too big for you, so it's not the right size.
If your bra straps are slipping off the shoulder: The band is too big - yep, this is a repeat answer. Most often, our bands are too big. They need to be snug in order for a bra to do its job.
If there are gaps in the cup: Scoop. If there is still space in the cup, try going down a cup size.
If the straps are too loose: This is another thing you need to adjust each time you put your bra on. Don't assume the straps stayed exactly as you left them before you washed your bra or took it off. Adjust and wear them snug every time.
If you're spilling over: If your girls are spilling on the top or the sides, then try a bigger cup size.
If your underwire is digging in: The "smile" of the underwire should fully encapsulate each breast. If it's digging into your breast tissue at all, try sizing up in the cup. Sometimes this is about the bra style, and this particular silhouette might not be a good one for your breast shape.
If the wire pops out of your bra: Throw it away. If your bra is old, unsupportive, fraying, or the wires are popping out, throw it away. Shop for something that makes you feel great and is good quality.
If your bra hurts: Your bra should never hurt. Get a bra fitting or do one for yourself. Most women suffer because they don't know how good the right fitting bra can feel. Almost always, women have to go down a size in the band (or two) and up a size in the cup (or two).
3-Ingredient Natural Weed Killer That Really Works
Even if you're not a savvy environmentalist, you probably know that contaminating your yard with nasty chemicals isn't a good idea, especially if you have kids, pets, or an edible garden nearby. Here's an easy-to-make weed killer that won't hurt the earth but will stop the weeds from growing. All of these ingredients can be found at your local grocery store for only a few bucks. In fact, you may already have all of them in your home. It only takes a few minutes to make the mixture. Then you can get out in your yard and start squirting away.
This Is the 1 Thing I Always Travel With to Make a Hotel Feel Like Home
As much as I love to travel, it also stresses me out immensely. From the timing to the money to the being-away-from-home thing, there's just a lot happening, and don't even get me started on the flying part.
Things naturally settle down for me once I'm at my destination and I can really live it up in my hotel. Honestly, I love hotels. I love that they're fresh and clean and that I don't have to do anything to make it that way. I love that someone else will make my bed for me every morning and put my shoes in order by my suitcase and bring me bottled water. I am nothing if not a bit lazy, and that's OK.
5 Ways to De-Stress Instantly
But the best part about hotels, in my opinion, is the bathroom. You see, I'm very fond of taking baths, but I need a certain ambience for it. So every time I travel, I bring along an assortment of Lush bath bombs to make a hotel tub feel like my tub at home. There's no doubt that a bath bomb will make any bath better, but for me, it calms me down when my vacation gets to be too much and it gives me the zen feeling of being at home.
There are endless other ways to de-stress when you're traveling, whether it's journaling or doing some light exercise, but the best way for me to relax is to bring it all back to the place I feel the most comfortable, aka the bathtub. It may seem counterintuitive since I'm on vacation and trying to escape home, but even then, I like my small comforts, and one of them just so happens to be very easy to pack in my carry-on!

This Reddit Hack Will Change How You Wash Your Makeup Brushes
Using a LEGO base plate to wash brushes is an affordable alternative to other methods! from MakeupAddiction
There is a plethora of makeup brush cleaning products on the market, but many of them can come with a hefty price tag. Fortunately for budget-concerned beauty addicts, one Reddit user has found an affordable alternative to the textured silicone gloves and mats sold for washing makeup brushes.
User happyidiot3791 explained in a post that she uses a Lego base plate to wash her brushes as an alternative to more expensive mats and gloves.
The method works because the raised circles on the Lego plate create enough texture for her soap-soaked brushes to be scrubbed, loosening makeup and dirt on her brushes. Using the toy is also much cheaper; a Lego Plate will only run you about $10, while brush cleaning accessories can cost upward of $40.
If you don't already have a Lego mat sitting around the house and aren't too excited about purchasing one, beauty brands are coming out with cheaper alternatives. The AOA Brush Cleaning Egg is only a dollar and is ideal if you only own a few brushes.

29 Protective Styles That Will Save You Hours of Styling Time
Think of all the things you could do if you didn't spend hours doing your natural hair each week. Hell, I could have become a five-star chef in the time I've spent twisting and blow-drying my strands! But this Spring, I'm taking a totally new approach to wash day and embracing protective styles. Luckily, #teamnatural on Instagram has provided plenty of updo inspiration to keep me supplied with ideas for months.

A protective style is any coiffure configuration that keeps your ends safely tucked away. These hairdos require very little daily upkeep and help strands stay moisturized. On top of all that, the looks also promote hair growth since you're not pulling and yanking (causing shedding). Not to mention, your fingers are less likely to fall into early arthritis due to constant twisting. Stick to these protective looks, and you'll have bra-strap-length strands by Summer 2015.
The Sunscreen That Saved My Skin From the Scorching Sun at Walt Disney World
I have a confession to make: I'm a reluctant user of sunscreen. I know I'm supposed to use it to protect myself from sun damage, fine lines, and the like, but I've never enjoyed the feeling of sunscreen lurking beneath my usual makeup. What's more, many drugstore sunscreens had the tendency to irritate my skin and cause unusual rashes. With an exciting trip to Walt Disney World's Pandora steadily approaching, however, I knew I needed something to protect my skin from the harsh Florida sun, and I needed it ASAP.
Through a little process of elimination, I landed on Tatcha's Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen ($65). My daily skincare routine largely consists of products from the gentle brand inspired by Japanese beauty practices. In addition to knowing that Tatcha products typically work well for me, the line's sunscreen boasts a near perfect five-star review on Sephora.
Now here's the nitty-gritty on this sunscreen: the broad-spectrum product is made with zinc oxide and offers SPF 35 protection from UVA and UVB rays. In addition to its protective ingredients, it also consists of calming ones like silk extract, wild rose, and green tea. The sunscreen does come out of the bottle white, but it blends in easily with minimal effort.
As I left for the airport early in the morning, I applied a thin layer of the sunscreen and immediately noticed a change in the appearance of my pores. As a result, I decided to go without makeup until I arrived in Orlando. (Plus, I hate flying with loads of makeup on.) Before hitting the park, I applied yet another layer and, this time, I also applied foundation and concealer atop the sunscreen. To my surprise, the combination of different products did not make my skin feel all covered up and suffocated.
The following day was the real test: I'd be spending a full sunny day at Animal Kingdom. I made sure to apply a thicker layer as I left the hotel that day. Now, here's where you might say I made a huge mistake: I did not reapply. Probably because I'm not used to wearing sunscreen on a regular basis, I completely forgot about the handy bottle of sunscreen once it made its way to the depths of my backpack. Once I got back to the hotel in the early evening, I noticed a reddish color on my shoulders and simply thought to myself, "F*ck." But guess what? My face ended up being just fine. Though my arms were sunburned, my face didn't show any signs of sun exposure.
Since my trip, I won't lie and say I've been as committed to sunscreen as I know I'm supposed to be. That said, I have learned to implement it into my daily routine when it's a sunny day or I know I'm going to be outside a lot. That's progress, right?
This Student Wrote 127 Pages in Response to an Infuriating Catholic School Assignment
I go to a Catholic high school, and they wanted me to write a paper on why gay marriage is "wrong and dangerous", so instead I wrote this 127 page paper. from lgbt
One Catholic high school student in Missouri is going viral for sharing the details of their shocking religion class assignment - along with the epic way they responded to it.
Reddit user averagesmurf recently shared the above photo, showing the cover of their latest morality class assignment. The student's teacher allegedly assigned the high school students to write a paper about why gay marriage is "wrong and dangerous," but this teen had a little something different up their sleeve. Instead, they cranked out a whopping 127 pages about why gay marriage is actually "fabulous," backed up with Bible references and historical quotes.
The post garnered more than 900 comments from people who offered up both positive and negative reactions. Some praised the student's work, with one user saying, "Good job :) hope you got an A." Yet others were suspicious that the photo was a fluke, with another user writing, "This smells like bullsh*t to me, 127 pages is stupidly long and I doubt any school would assign an essay about the dangers of gay marriage."
So, the student shared a few now-deleted snapshots of supposed pages from the assignment to prove its validity. The typed pages incorporate multiple Bible quotes and citations to support the student's argument that gay marriage should not be frowned upon by the Church. On top of that, the student offered up an in-depth explanation of what the assignment entailed.
Though we may not know for sure whether this student's assignment was real, we sure hope it is, because it looks like some people in this world still need to broaden their viewpoint on this hot topic.
Game of Thrones: Did You Catch Mets Pitcher Noah Syndergaard's "Spoils of War" Cameo?
If you blinked at all during the second half of Game of Thrones's "The Spoils of War," you probably missed Noah Syndergaard's brief cameo. The New York Mets pitcher, pictured above, pops up as a soldier in the Lannister forces who face down Daenerys, her Dothraki army, and one hell of a big dragon during the episode's intense, climactic battle. Sadly he doesn't take down the enemy by whipping any baseballs in the middle of the battlefield, but we imagine his athleticism came in handy during filming when his character exhibits some pretty sick spear-tossing skills.

Syndergaard, who partially tore his lat muscle in April, actually teased his Game of Thrones cameo a few months ago during an interview with Sports Illustrated. "It's a dream come true," he revealed. "I think it's the greatest TV show of all time, so just to be able to say I was in Game of Thrones is an unbelievable feeling." The athlete is one of many famous faces who have made surprise appearances in Westeros over the past seven seasons, including a long list of musicians. Let's hope his cameo is a little less divisive than Ed Sheeran's was in the season-seven premiere . . .
Let These Before-and-After Playroom Photos Inspire You to Transform Your Space
Whether you've carved out space in your house for a kids' playroom or not, let's face it: it's probably not seeing a ton of play. Most playrooms these days serve as storage for all the toys and games your little ones have accrued over the years. If they do hang out in there, it's not long before they get bored. With ample space and plenty of supplies, how can this be?
We turned to Megan Schiller, founder of The Art Pantry, for answers. She specializes in revitalizing kids' playrooms by turning them into creative spaces to maximize their ingenuity and stimulate their artistic ability.
"Every design choice is rooted in my experience as a preschool teacher and art educator," she tells us. "I think about the ages of the kids, their interests, and how they play. Then I think about how to set up a space that would inspire them to explore, tinker, create, and get lost in their imagination."
Megan answered our nine most frustrating questions about how to create a playroom that keeps kids entertained for hours on end, revealing that it's not all about organization - though a little certainly doesn't hurt - and outlining how parents can let their kids get messy without ruining the furniture. For added inspiration, she also shared before-and-after photos of four different rooms she's revamped so that you can see her advice in action.
How I Finally Cleared Up My Skin With 3 Simple Steps
This post was originally published March 2015.
Hi, I'm Kirbie. I'm 28, and I have an obsession with skin care.
It all dates back to when I picked up my first magazine at the tender age of 11. These miracle monthlies gave me secrets from the stars! So-and-so uses night cream? Off I went to the drugstore to pick up Neutrogena's Copper Eye Cream. (Yes, at 12.) And ever since I read that Hilary Duff used Mario Badescu's Rose Water Facial Spray, I made sure I had one on me at all times. (One day, I vow to ask her if her affinity for rose water is true or not.)
That being said, I'm very aware of my changing skin. I've complained about my experience with melasma - a result of my birth control. I've talked about my facial hair and the surprising way I get rid of it. And I definitely dealt with a severe case of adult acne after getting off the pill. I am more concerned now with the texture, clarity, and strength of my skin - yes, thin skin isn't good - and I found that, even as a beauty reporter, I wasn't able to nail down the perfect formula.
That's why I feel compelled to share with everyone how I got my skin to a good place. Yes, I never had deep, cystic acne, but I empathize with those of you who experience it, given how I feel with my own breakouts. I believe making these changes really have had an amazing effect on my skin. So, what's the process?

The 2 Things This Fashion Editor Always Shops at Target
Upon entering Target, some ladies run to the swimsuit section while others immediately start to search for leftover pieces from the latest designer collaboration. And maybe the shoe connoisseurs head to footwear, knowing they can shop the Converse brand for less. Me? I go straight to the men's department. It's here that I secure two of my biggest wardrobe staples: plain white tees and crewneck sweatshirts, both of which happen to be Hanes.
While these are the most casual pieces in my closet, I wear them regularly. I own the fleece-lined sweatshirts in almost every color, and I use them to help balance out my fancy metallic midi skirts at least once a week. The t-shirts are made from fabric so soft that I practically live in them, from the gym to brunch to a night out, once I've added a leather jacket. Scroll to see why I'll never stop buying these must haves from the great land of Target, and why I highly suggest you follow suit.
6 Brilliant Closet Organization Hacks Straight From Ikea
If organizing your closet isn't already on your to-do list, you'll definitely be inspired to give it a major refresh after watching Ikea's Home Tour Squad do the job. In just four hours, the team turns a cluttered wardrobe space into a showroom-worthy walk-in closet using Ikea's Algot open storage system that adjusts with your wardrobe. The brilliant makeover and the hacks that made it happen are revealed in the video above. Read ahead to see exactly how you too can tackle the project and truly optimize your closet space.
1. Get rid of any pieces you haven't used in over a year.
When clearing out your closet, ask yourself whether the item is really worth holding onto.
2. Keep photos and measurements of your closet on your phone.
Having these on hand will make for easy references while shopping.
3. Look to adjustable shelving.
This will help maximize storage space and allow for flexibility as your wardrobe expands and changes.
4. Use multiple depths of shelves.
Deep shelves are great for storing clothes, while shorter shelves can hold your accessories. The team even repurposed Ikea picture ledges as a beautiful tie display.
5. Use rails for hanging clothes and hooks for jackets.
This way, your coats and thicker pieces don't take up too much valuable space.
6. Take advantage of your closet's ceiling height.
Stacking up instead of completly utilizing available floor space will make your closet appear less cluttered. Tuck a stool in that open area that you can bring out when necessary.
10 Essential Steps to Take Before a Job Interview
Once you've snagged a job interview, the inevitable nerves that follow can make it difficult to focus on preparation. With a little bit of planning, though, you can bring your best business-ready self to the table. Follow these tips leading up to your big moment.
Several hours earlier:
1. It's important to have a healthy, substantial breakfast, of course, but it's just as important to eat well the night before so that you feel your best in the morning. Choose nutritious foods that fill and satisfy, and remember to limit caffeine to one or two servings. Chances are you'll already be feeling jittery, so put a cap on your coffee consumption.
2. Check the hourly forecast and grab any extra items that you may need: an umbrella, a raincoat, gloves, or suitable footwear, for instance.
3. Shoes are important: make sure your pair is both weather-appropriate and easy to walk in, because the last thing you want to do is trip your way through the office. The night before your interview, wear the selected shoes with socks for a couple hours to guarantee that they're broken in and comfortable.
4. Pack a small bag with all the hygiene necessities: floss, travel-size deodorant, a compact mirror, and any makeup essentials that you may want to use for a morning touch-up. Include a tin of mints and avoid gum in case you forget to throw it away beforehand.
One hour prior:
5. Call a friend for a quick conversation that will place you in a lighter frame of mind. Try not to talk about your interview. Instead, focus on carefree, upbeat topics that will put you at ease.
6. Turn up the volume to amp up your energy. Nobody wants to talk to a tired deadbeat, let alone hire one. Companies want lively, enthusiastic employees, so listen to a special pump-up playlist featuring your favorite fast-tempo songs. Let yourself loosen up so that your personality can shine.
With minutes to go:
7. Turn off your phone. It's a no-brainer, but nothing screams "unprofessional" quite like a vibrating purse - not to mention a loud, awkward ringtone.
8. Drink up: hydration is key to staying alert, so bring a full water bottle to sip throughout the day. Once you reach the office, kindly accept any drink offers from the receptionist in case your mouth dries out midinterview.
9. Take deep breaths, inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth. Anxious butterflies can cause headaches and hazy vision, so concentrate on breathing to clear your mind.
10. Smile. Attitude is everything, and positivity packs the greatest punch when it comes to boosting your appeal.
Have your own interview prep tips to share? Leave them in the comments.
How to Talk Your Way Into Flying First Class
Flying first class is the ultimate indulgence in travel, but first-class tickets are usually exorbitantly expensive. When you board a flight, airlines love tempting you with empty first-class seats as you walk past to squeeze into your middle seat in coach. But there are ways to get into the hallowed grounds of first-class seating without paying first-class prices.
If you're the type of person who always finds a way to talk your way into a room upgrade in a hotel, use some of those similar skills to score better seats on your next flight. Know how the system works and make the most of any opportunity you get to justifiably request an upgrade.
There's no guaranteed method of getting a free first-class upgrade, but here are some tricks you can use to boost your chances next time you fly.
1. Take Advantage of a Full Flight
As headlines about recent unsavory events have clearly demonstrated, airlines often overbook flights in order to maximize the number of seats filled when passengers miss their flights. If coach seats on a flight are overbooked, the airline will be much more likely to upgrade passengers to empty first-class seats so that there is room to accommodate everybody with a coach ticket.
2. Offer Up Your Seat
If your flight is overbooked and you're not in a rush to get to your destination, offer to give up your seat in exchange for a first-class ticket on the next flight. You'll save the airline a headache, and they may treat you to a more luxurious trip for your troubles. Usually, you'll just be offered a voucher for a flight in the future, but it's worthwhile to try your luck at a first-class seat.
3. Know When to Complain
You settle into your seat in coach and try to turn on your TV. It doesn't work. In this situation, a rookie traveler might despair about their bad luck, but a pro uses the situation to their advantage. If there is something wrong with your seat, maybe a broken tray table or a busted window shade, try asking to be moved. Play the game a little bit and flex your acting chops when you complain about how excited you were to watch Minions. If all other coach seats are full, you may be given a seat in first class.
4. Dress the Part
Dress for the airplane seat you want, not the one you have. Sure, there's no good reason first-class passengers and coach passengers should dress any differently, but it couldn't hurt to dress nicely when requesting an upgrade. If you usually dress for flights the same way you dress when you're watching Netflix in bed, try sprucing up your look. And as always, be courteous and polite.
With more and more of the seat-filling process becoming automated, it's becoming increasingly rare to speak person to person with someone at the airline who can grant you a seat upgrade. Even if you're unable to get an upgrade, remember: if Kanye West and Kim Kardashian can fly coach, so can we!
Orly’s New Collection Finally Makes It Possible For Muslims to Wear Nail Polish
Many Muslim men and women are not able to wear regular nail polish because it conflicts with prayer practices. The coats of polish are believed to create a barrier over the skin, which prevents water from touching every part of the body during ablutions, but Orly's new polish collection offers a solution. In an effort to bridge the diversity gap in the beauty world, the polish brand has teamed up with Muslim Girl to release a new collection of six halal-certified polishes, all of which let oxygen and moisture pass through the polish.
The Breathable line called #HalalPaint features adorably sassy polish names like Haram-Bae, The Perfect Amani-Cure, What the Fatima?, Ig-Noor the Haters, and more, named by MuslimGirl.com founder Amani Al-Khatahtbeh and the Muslim Girl team.
"This line is important because there are so many girls and young women who aren't represented in mainstream beauty," Azmia Magane, Muslim Girl chief of staff, said in a press release. "They either don't fit that definition or see things about them that are designed without them, instead of for them and by them. This is our way of bridging the gap."
And this collection is exactly that and more. While it's created by Muslim women for Muslim women, all women (or men!) can wear it. In addition to the polishes being made of 100 percent halal ingredients, making them permitted under Islamic law, they are made with great ingredients - like argan oil, pro-vitamin B5, and vitamin C - to promote healthy nails.
"Many of us are the girls who could never find our names on a keychain, so we wanted to make sure we provided that experience through the collection," Al-Khatahtbeh said. This collection is an incredible way to acknowledge the diverse religions that also exist in the beauty world. Although the polishes were made for Muslim women, anyone can wear them!
The six-piece collection is available for preorder on halalpaint.com for $49 and will ship on July 1. Keep reading to see photos of the stunning colors.

David Beckham's "Dinner of Choice" Will Have You Screaming "What the Eff?"
Image Source: Getty / David M. Benett
We never thought we'd see the day where we were actually questioning David Beckham's level of sexiness, but his most recent choice of dinner has us a little perplexed, to say the least. On May 2, Beckham celebrated his 42nd birthday alongside his adorable family, but it's not his Benjamin Button aging tactics that are raising eyebrows; it's his "dinner of choice" and the bizarre combination of foods.
Beckham shared a photo of his plate on Instagram, pictured below.
We totally get it: it's his birthday and he can eat whatever he wants, but the visual of all the foods mashed up on the plate together has us feeling things about DB we never thought were possible. Let's break it down. According to Business Insider, Beckham's plate is filled with gammon (ham), a fried egg, coleslaw, two pineapple rings, mushy peas, baked beans, and potato wedges - quite the interesting combination.
When we think of Beckham's washboard abs and perfectly toned athletic physique, we assumed he preferred a protein-heavy meal or a huge rack of ribs for his birthday cheat dinner, so this array of mushy peas and pineapple rings definitely took us by surprise. Whatever floats your boat, Becks (and he definitely redeemed himself with this delicious-looking dessert below)!

3 Ingenious Cooking Secrets Straight From an Italian Grandmother
Like many Italian cooks, Laura Vitale learned a lot from her Italian grandmother. Laura grew up spending time in the kitchen, cooked her way to the top, and now hosts Cooking Channel's Simply Laura and YouTube's Laura in the Kitchen, where she has more than 2 million subscribers. After speaking about her chili mac and cheese recipe with me, Laura shared some truly invaluable cooking tips that she learned from her Italian grandmother and that every home cook can benefit from. Get a free cooking lesson by remembering these three rules, straight from an unbeatable source.
1. Buy One Cheap Olive Oil and One Nice One
If you cook with olive oil a lot, it's smart to have one cheap bottle and one higher quality, more expensive bottle. "There should be two different kinds of olive oil you keep on hand. This is something I've done my whole life because my mother and my grandmother do," Laura said. "When you have two different kinds of olive oil, a standard olive oil and a more expensive version, that more expensive version can be used to make no-cook sauces that have such potent, fresh flavor," like basil pesto and bruschetta. Save the cheaper olive oil for cooking dishes where the flavor won't be able to shine as much, like kale and white bean soup with Italian sausage.
2. Freeze Parmesan Rinds to Add to Soup
You might think there's no use for a rind of parmesan cheese once you've grated every last strand, but that's not the case - in fact, you should be cooking with it. Laura notes that parmesan rinds are a crucial component to flavorful soups, saying, "Having a good base for your soup is so important; it's something that my grandma taught me. To make [soup] even better, you throw in a little bit of a wedge of parmigiano reggiano cheese in the pot as it cooks. It releases all that flavor as it cooks. It's not only just for garnish, but hits it at a much deeper level. I keep parmesan rinds in my freezer for times like this - it makes the biggest difference in the world."
3. Treat Time as an Ingredient
The best cooking tip Laura received from her grandmother is to recognize that time is just as important of an ingredient as any other. "Never mistake the difference between what takes a long time to cook and what takes a long time to prepare. One of the most important things when it comes to cooking is time - allowing something to cook for a while and not rushing it. When you're cooking for someone, make sure it comes from the heart; it's a different experience. [My grandmother] says, 'Half the time I don't even want to eat, I just want to cook for people because it makes me feel good.'"
10 Food-Editor-Approved Store-Bought Meal Shortcuts
While we're not exactly prescribing a semi-homemade lifestyle, à la Sandra Lee, sometimes a little dinner head start, in the form of canned beans, a jar of really good tomato sauce, or some roasted beets is the difference between a home-cooked meal and Chinese takeout. These pantry, freezer, and fridge staples are items we actually keep on hand and use on busy nights, when a meal made completely from scratch is just not going to happen.
Prepare to Spit Out Your Water When You Hear What These Men Think About Birth Control
A recent study is causing quite the uproar, and once you learn about its findings, you'll likely want to scream in frustration, too. PerryUndem, a non-partisan public opinion research firm, surveyed slightly more than 1,000 registered voters nationwide about contraceptives and the policies that surround them. One statistic in particular really stood out among the rest.
Only 37 percent of men noted that they had benefitted personally from women having access to affordable birth control. Allow me to repeat that: only 37 percent. That meant a whopping 52 percent of men who stated they did not personally benefit from the presence of affordable birth control (with the other remaining percentage saying they were unsure about the matter or refusing to answer).
Apparently these men are unable to comprehend how many babies they could have potentially had roaming the earth if it weren't for birth control. As news of this survey's particularly ludicrous finding spread across social media, so did the plethora of disgusted reactions from people who couldn't seem to wrap their heads around the absurdity of it all. Check out their reactions ahead.
This Fiery Dance to Harry Styles's "Kiwi" Is Giving Us So Much Life Right Now
The best song on Harry Styles by Harry Styles is "Kiwi," no doubt, according to me. I fully intend to rage when I hear it live when Harry goes on tour this Fall, and now I know exactly what moves to learn and bust out at the concerts, thanks to choreographer Galen Hooks. She and the rest of this talented crew at LA's Millennium Dance Complex just dropped this sexy routine, and as a fan of Harry's, it has me wishing that he had some ability to dance so he could join in. However, as danceable as "Kiwi" is - he's screaming about having babies and it's no one else's business, after all - I feel pretty confident that Harry won't be trying any of Galen's choreography anytime soon. It's no matter: we have this video, as well as others from the talented dancers at Millennium, to get us on our feet.
The Most Outrageous Outfits Christina Aguilera Has Worn Through the Years
We might have all been talking about Christina Aguilera's head-turning very sexy swimsuit this year, but it's not the first time she's made a big impact with her fashion choices. The Ecuadorian-American singer wore some pretty memorable outfits when she first came into the spotlight.
Who doesn't remember her "Genie in a Bottle" years? Or the black and yellow bikini top she wore with matching chaps and bottoms with the word "Dirrty" on them in honor of her hit song? Back in the day (and even now whenever she's on the red carpet), Xtina was the queen of showing off her midriff and owned her sexy like nobody's business. So take a stroll down memory lane with us to enjoy Christina's most outrageous outfits ever.
This Theory About Neville Longbottom's Wand Explains Everything About Him
When we first meet Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter books, it's clear that he isn't that bright or great with his wand and magic. He constantly forgets items, manages to make a mess out of spells and potions, and is perceived as someone who is on the edge of being a squib. However, an old theory going viral on Imgur suggests that it's not Neville's fault at all, but rather his wand.
The theory, originally posted in 2004 by Soggy Old Coot on the Harry Potter Theory blogspot, explores the background of Neville's wand. As we all know, the wand chooses the wizard, and if you don't win a wand or buy a new one, it won't respond to the new owner in the proper manner. These laws of wands apply to Neville as well. His wand isn't his own, but his father's, meaning his trouble with magic might be because of this law of wands.
The story about Neville and his wand goes on further to connect it to Neville living under his father's shadow. No one thinks he's as good as his dad, and people take great pains to remind him of it. In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Neville says, "Gran's always telling Professor Marchbanks I'm not as good as my dad . . . " Of course, later in the book, Neville's wand breaks in the Department of Mysteries, and he starts to become more apt at using his new wand that chose him.
All of this means that Neville is definitely capable of magic and using a wand correctly. "Hence, it is only logical to assume that in ideal conditions, Neville is just as talented as Harry," writes Soggy Old Coot. "We have proof of this in that every instance in which Neville has demonstrated his potential or existing abilities has been in relation to Defense Against the Dark Arts, excepting his talents with herbology, which match those of Harry's at athletics." The books after Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix go on to show this, especially in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, where Neville manages to help win the war and make Voldemort vulnerable by killing Nagini.
Oh Neville, you're the wizard we should've had more faith in!

I was born with the worst metabolism possible. My body ignored the fact I was dancing three to four hours a day after school and kept me very plump no matter how hard I tried to lose weight. And having yo-yo dieted my whole adult life thus far, I can never seem to keep off the weight I lose and inevitably gain it all back the moment a carb touches my lips. Therefore, I am a "fat traveler," and my "fatness" has made me constantly aware of my size and the unfortunate downsides to adventuring that come along with it.
If I could never take a plane again, I would be happy. Other than my fear of flying (which has somehow still endured through over 50 flights), I always wince at the thought of making people uncomfortable who sit beside me in the narrow seats. While I do actually fit in my designated chair and do not require a second to house my body, I still realize that the fact I am right up against the armrests is an unfortunate downside to my row partners. It truly is an extra effort on my side to ensure that I don't overstep the boundary.
I studied abroad in England for a semester and will never forget how my weight made me feel. While my slim exchange-student friends would waltz away with a multitude of hot guys after a night out at a club, I always ended up walking home alone because not one man would give me a single look all evening. I know your self-worth shouldn't be based on whether people find you attractive, but it was hard to enjoy much of my first time so far away from home when within three weeks of starting my program, all my girlfriends had ended up with a boyfriend and I was never once even asked if I'd like to be bought a drink by a cute British boy.
It's women like me who are hopefully changing the stigma around what a traveler is supposed to look like, because there is no one way to be.
On a trip to Costa Rica, I was roped into a tour that included a hike to volcanoes, hot springs, and waterfalls and a trek through the jungle. The guide failed to mention that it was a very steep incline and actually probably only best for athletic folk to experience. My endurance as a dancer in my teens had disappeared, and I was straining to go more than 30 seconds without needing to stop. About 30 minutes in, the guide told us that anyone who didn't think they could handle it should head back down but was clearly directing the statement at me. A group of rugby players laughed at me as I embarrassingly walked down the mountain and hated myself for the rest of the day.
In my experience, the only way for me to lose weight is to eat a low-carb diet, which makes traveling a living hell. It's nearly impossible to keep up a healthy low-carbohydrate regimen when you are out and about, can't cook your own meals, or are in a place where pasta is life (I'm looking at you, Italy). It's frustrating to be working hard on making your body as healthy as possible but also having an intense battle within yourself to enjoy your life and try the foods of each country you go to. The average-bodied traveler does not have to worry about this because they can be the wanderlust foodie I dream of being and not gain five pounds overnight (like I somehow do the moment I eat bread).
And then there are the other fun things like not being able to buy clothes in most places because you're over a size 10, getting pointed at in the streets of Asia, or having people look really surprised when you say you love to travel (as if a fat person somehow would never have that as a passion). It's already frustrating enough to be a woman who likes to travel and then add in the fact that I'm a fat woman of color and it makes just the perfect combination for ridicule and complications.
But it's women like me who are hopefully changing the stigma around what a traveler is supposed to look like, because there is no one way to be. Curvy adventurers have just as much drive and ambition to widen their worlds (pun not intended). We may take up a bit more space, but we deserve the chance to not have to feel ashamed of ourselves just for being visible in a foreign place. Maybe our goal isn't necessarily to hike all the great mountains of the world (although I know some amazing plus-size women who are crazy-fit and love to hike), or we may fit a bit snugly in our seats on a flight, but at the end of the day, we're just trying to get to our destination so we can be enlightened just as much as the rest of our smaller journeying peers.

A Rarely Seen Look at How Princess Diana Decorated Her Private Palace Quarters
Diana was famous for her fashion choices, but her taste in home decor is a little less well-known. When she first moved into Apartments 8 and 9 at Kensington Palace as a new bride, she was just 20 years old and she had three floors of rooms to decorate in the style of her choosing. However, the revamp had to suit the 17th century building as well as blend with the priceless antiques and oil paintings already displayed in the rooms. Diana turned to her mother for help, and she recommended her interior designer, Dudley Poplak, who worked with Diana to create a suite of rooms that combined traditional royal gravitas with Diana's fresh, fun, and feminine style. Take an up close look ahead.
5 Ways to De-Stress Instantly
When it's one of those days and wine isn't readily available (or it's not 5 o'clock yet), you have to make do with what you have right then and there to get yourself to chill out. Thankfully, there are several methods to relax in the moment that can be practiced anywhere and anytime. See how to de-stress instantly below!
10 Ways to Relax Before Bed
1. Phone a friend.
Oftentimes a healthy venting session is a great way to just let it all out. If you're at work and unable to hop on a call, ask a coworker who's willing to lend an ear for a few minutes (in a private setting, of course!). You'll feel significantly better releasing your frustrations rather than bottling them up.
2. Practice mindfulness.
Derik Mills, founder and CEO of yoga and meditation app YogaGlo, de-stresses by training to live more in the present and strengthening his self-awareness. "Whenever I'm looking to quickly improve my mood, one of the things I like to practice is to close my eyes, slow down my breath, and direct my focus to something calming for me," he told us. "I like to surf, so sometimes I think of the ocean and practice letting thoughts simply flow past me, not attaching or dwelling on any one particular thought."
3. Put on headphones.
Listening to music has the power to help release stress. If you feel yourself getting overwhelmed, listen to soothing melodies and sounds that work for you. If you find blaring hip-hop or rock to be therapeutic, crank it up. Sounds of rain and waves may be effective for some, but if you find it to be even more irritating, explore other musical options.
4. Try aromatherapy.
Tap into your other senses and consider using aromatherapy to relax. "Scent is a simple and powerful way to change your state," the CEO of natural essential oil line Vitruvi, Sara Panton, told us. "I always keep a calming essential oil in my purse, so whether I'm traveling or in a busy day of meetings, it's always there to remind me to take a deep breath."
5. Hop on an app.
Though it might seem counterproductive to use your device for stress management, there are a number of apps to help you slow down like Headspace (guided meditation and mindfulness) and Derik's YogaGlo (practice yoga anywhere). Apps like Breathe + Relaxation, for example, can also help you recenter at your desk or wherever you are by focusing on deep breathing.
A Surgeon Found 17 Contact Lenses in a Patient's Eye - Then Things Got Worse
A 67-year-old patient was about to undergo cataract surgery when her surgeon discovered a "blueish mass" in her eye. As the surgeon and her colleagues injected anesthesia into the patient's eye, they removed the object - only to find that it was actually a clump of 17 contact lenses stuck together. As they inspected further, they were surprised to find an additional 10 contact lenses in the woman's eye.
The shocking discovery occurred last year; however, UK-based ophthalmologist Rupal Morjaria is now going public with the story in the hopes that it will encourage people to be more diligent about their eye care. In an interview with Optometry Today, Morjaria said, "None of us have ever seen this before. We were really surprised that the patient didn't notice it because it would cause quite a lot of irritation while it was sitting there."
Due to the possible presence of bacteria in the eye, the patient would have been at risk of serious and permanent eye damage if they would have proceeded with the surgery. As a result, the procedure was postponed. Upon speaking with her afterwards, Morjaria learned that the patient had been wearing monthly disposable lenses for 35 years and apparently didn't realize she was inserting new contacts over old ones that had not been removed.
When the patient heard the news, she was "shocked." Morjaria said, "When she was seen two weeks after I removed the lenses, she said her eyes felt a lot more comfortable. She thought her previous discomfort was just part of old age and dry eye."
Though this particular incident is rare and scary, the team at Solihull Hospital hopes it will encourage people to maintain regular optometrist appointments, which would have allowed a doctor to catch a problem like this before it became so severe. Contact lenses are incredibly common and fairly easy to use, but accidents happen.
This Cheap Wine From Walmart Is Ranked as One of the Best in the World
If you're one of those people who orders the cheapest glass of wine on the menu because you can't tell the difference (no shame), this news is going to make your day. A $7 bottle of wine sold at Walmart has been ranked as one of the best in the world by Decanter Magazine, which covers wine and spirits. The award-winning red wine is La Moneda Reserva's Malbec, a Chilean wine whose description notes that it has a "deep purple color with violet tints, rounded and velvety tannins, complex plum, fig, and strawberry flavors and excellent length."
The wine earned the title of Platinum Best in Show at last year's Decanter World Wine Awards, where more than 200 experts tasted thousands of wines (blindly!), proving that a wine's price tag is not always associated with its quality. The best part is the wine is now available for the first time at Walmart locations in the US, after previously only being sold by Walmart's UK-based grocery brand, Asda. It's available in more than 500 Walmart locations in the country while supplies last, so be sure to scan your location's wine aisle. If you volunteer to bring the wine to dinner, you'll be able to impress your family and friends with this award-winning bottle - they'll never have to know the cost.
