How 1 Mom Turned Leftover Cardboard Boxes Into the Most Incredible Play Kitchen You've Ever Seen

This mom proves that you don't have to go out and buy your little one the latest addition of every toy in order for them to have the coolest play area on the block!

Rodessa Villanueva-Reyes, a mother from the Philippines, gave her Facebook followers DIY envy when she posted before-and-after pictures of her 1-year-old daughter's new play kitchen - constructed by hand from old cardboard boxes.

Since her little girl loves playing in the kitchen, the resourceful and talented mama decided to utilize old boxes that she collected from friends to transform them into a mini gourmet kitchen fit for a chef-in-the-making.

Rodessa and her husband started the project off by setting up boxes to form the kitchen's main shape and then used a permanent marker to mark where they wanted to make cuts for the doors and the oven. She then cut sheets of vinyl stickers to easily cover the cardboard exteriors. To complete the formal feel, she created a custom "Audrey's Café and Restaurant" logo and added kitchen toys they already owned for some extra fun. The final product is not only realistic, it's beyond adorable!

Every Parent Needs to See What Meningitis Did to This Toddler

Like most toddlers, when Taylor Marshall took his first steps, he needed some encouragement and assistance. But unlike many others, this 20-month-old tot also needed help from a prosthesis on one leg as well as a full-length splint on the other.

This major milestone in the British boy's life is one that almost never happened. Only a year ago, Taylor was diagnosed with meningococcal septicaemia, and his mother, Terri Lewsley, was told that her son only had hours to live. "It all happened within the space of a day," Terri described to Today.

Taylor was just 8 months old when his family learned the devastating news that their baby boy had meningitis. This bacterial disease can kill within hours, and there are an estimated 1.2 million cases worldwide. Doctors put the baby in a medical coma for 17 days, and his family watched as gangrene turned his limbs black. "We had him christened and all the family came in to say goodbye," Terri said. "There were a lot of prayers being said."

After he had his left leg, his right toes, and all of his fingers amputated, Taylor recovered over the next seven months in the hospital. Now the happy toddler is adapting to life with his prosthetic leg - and is officially taking things one step at a time.

"He is back to being a normal toddler, really. It's not changed his personality. Since his recovery and being back home, he's gone back to himself," Terri added. "He plays and laughs. He's a really happy little boy."

Meningitis is swelling of the lining around the brain and spinal cord and septicaemia is the blood poisoning form of the disease. While viral meningitis is not typically life threatening, bacterial meningitis is very serious and parents shouldn't wait to seek medical help if they suspect that their child might be sick. Babies are more at risk of contracting bacterial meningitis than any other age group and newborns are particularly susceptible to meningitis caused by listeria, E.coli, and group B streptococcal. While vaccines protect against this potentially devastating disease, they can't prevent all forms of meningitis and septicaemia. These are the common symptoms in babies that parents should be aware of:

  • A tense or bulging soft spot
  • A high fever (but can run normal-low in babies under three months)
  • Cold hands and feet
  • A dislike of being picked up
  • A sleepy expression or too sleepy to wake up
  • Rapid breathing or trouble breathing
  • Shivering
  • 'Pink prick' rash marks or purple bruises
  • An unusual grunting noise
  • Vomiting or refusing to eat
  • Pale or blotchy skin
  • A stiff or floppy body
  • Limb or joint pain

Kate Middleton Makes These 12 Royal Updates to Her Wardrobe Every Fall

There's a reason Kate Middleton's Fall outfits always look familiar. First of all, she repeats plenty of pieces at the same time each year. There's nothing wrong with that - she knows what feels comfortable and, of course, what actually looks good. But of course, there are little tricks and tips she picked up at Kensington Palace that she'll never forget.

The duchess knows just when to pull out her tights and what season it's appropriate to work tweed and plaid into her look. Of course, there's always room for a little experimentation. Kate always debuts new prints for special occasions, and we can't wait to see what she's got planned for 2017. In the meantime, read on for the 12 style updates Kate's making right now.

These Cool Leather Jackets Are Making Us Crave Fall

There's something decidedly cool about layering on a leather jacket. In-arm or over-the-shoulder, not only do they act as an extra barrier against those early Fall winds, but they also finish a look, much more than, say, a sweatshirt can. And don't think that you can't continue to wear them in the Winter - they're great layering pieces to wear underneath long, oversize coats. So whether you want to go the faux route or not, we found dreamy leather jackets that are waiting for you.

Chris Pratt Steps Out Without His Wedding Ring After Splitting From Anna Faris

Chris Pratt and Anna Faris announced their separation last week, and it appears that they've already taken a few steps toward moving on. The actor, whose massive star power was reportedly a factor in their split, stepped out without his wedding ring in LA on Sunday. Chris took his son, Jack, to church and flashed a smile for the cameras after hugging a friend next to his car.

The happy outing shouldn't really come as a surprise to Chris's fans. Since he and Anna made it clear in their joint statement that they remain close and still have a lot of love for each other, it's safe to assume they're going to do everything they can to make sure they part ways amicably. But if you're still heartbroken over the whole thing, Kristen Bell had some sweet advice for those still mourning the end of their favorite celebrity couple.

I am 32 and I Do Not Have My Sh*t Together

This post originally appeared on Medium.

I woke up this morning, and realized I still do not have my shit together. 32 years later.

I don't know how and if I am going to stay in the US, under which visa.

I don't make any money from my writing, and I want to be a writer.

I don't know how to work in corporations anymore.

I have been having health issues, and I have no insurance.

I looked at the people in my life and they seem to have it all together. Including babies.

I wanted to sob, but that would mean it will make me look even more of a mess, and will drive people away.

Today is a hard day. For some of us, it is hard to get over it and move on.

Today is the day, when I want to release the shame that is trapping me, and tell you that I do not have my sh*t together, and it is OK.

Today I allow myself to be a mess, and see what is there. Maybe I will find the freedom I have been seeking all this time.

If you think you do not have your sh*t together, I am here to tell you that it is OK. That you are allowed to. That the system we live in, that favors wealth and status, is not designed for some of us. And we have to fight a harder fight. To be an artist these days is an act of heroism.

I am with you in your scattered mess. And I love you. And you are my hero.

This Alternate Harry Potter Story About Neville Will Rock Your World

Any true Harry Potter fan keeps up with all the new theories and possibilities that seem to pop up every few weeks. This latest one is an alternate storyline that completely turns around the series, focusing instead on Neville Longbottom.

The fan fiction, written by Tumblr user ink-splotch, explores what the world of Harry Potter would've looked like if Voldemort had chosen to mark Neville as his opponent instead. The long story makes huge changes to each book - for example, the writer imagines that Neville wouldn't be a "savior," but rather a scarred Neville who would still forget and lose items. The books would still focus in on Harry, Ron, and Hermione's adventures but only because they were reckless and willing to explore, not because of some unprecedented need to stop Voldemort.

Read the full post below to see how the entire Harry Potter world could've been. It definitely makes you think about all the relationship dynamics in the series.

Sophie Turner's Hair Is Key to the "Subliminal Messages" on Game of Thrones

It's simply impossible to watch Game of Thrones without feeling a sense of amazement over the hairstyles - especially that of fiery-haired fan favorite, Sansa Stark. Stark is, of course, played by British actress Sophie Turner, who has put her hair through the ringer for the sake of the role. But no matter how many times Turner dyes her hair red, black, or back to her natural blonde, she always maintains stunning strands - which is why it's no surprise that she was just announced as the first-ever ambassador for Wella Professionals hair care.

When POPSUGAR talked with Sophie about this exciting new partnership, it was clear how passionate she is about Wella's products. "I was actually using their products beforehand, because my team - whether it's for Game of Thrones or just for styling in general - always kind of used it," Turner shared.

We chatted with Sophie all about her "desert island" beauty products, her keys to confidence, and - of course - all things Game of Thrones. Read on for more!

18 People Who Are in Line For the Presidency If Trump Is Impeached

If you're suddenly curious as to who becomes president in case President Donald Trump resigns, dies, or is impeached, take a look at the 18 people in line for succession. Called the Presidential Succession Act, the law has a long history of changes, with the last one taking place in 2006.

The first iteration of the Presidential Succession Act in 1792 stated the Senate president pro tempore would be next in line after the vice president. On July 18, 1947, President Harry Truman signed the Presidential Succession Act of 1947. This act changed the line of succession in two ways; first it reinstated the Senate president pro tempore and speaker of the House to the succession plan. Secondly, it also placed the speaker of the House right after the vice president instead of the Senate president pro tempore. The last change to the act came in 2006, when the USA Patriot Improvement and Reauthorization Act of 2005 added the secretary of Homeland Security to the list.

In Trump's administration, here's the full line of succession.
  1. Vice President Mike Pence
  2. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan
  3. Senate President Pro Tempore Orrin Hatch
  4. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson
  5. Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin
  6. Secretary of Defense James Mattis
  7. Attorney General Jeff Sessions
  8. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke
  9. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue
  10. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross
  11. Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta
  12. Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price
  13. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson
  14. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao
  15. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry
  16. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos
  17. Secretary of Veterans Affairs David Shulkin
  18. Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly

The only caveat here is that Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao isn't eligible since she was born in Taipei, Taiwan, and is therefore not a US-born citizen. While it's still uncertain whether or not we'll need to refer to this list in the future, at least we know who we can expect.

6 Reasons Not to Send Professional Emails After Dark

We've all been there before - it's midnight when you suddenly remember a work email you promised to send at the end of the day. You're tempted to send an email right then and there because you either have a deadline or you don't want to forget to send it again the next day. Before you make any rash decisions, stop and consider the situation. Unless the email is an emergency and you actually have people waiting to hear back from you, then I advise you hold off on it till the next day. It's also OK to send it if your colleague lives in a different time zone where it's daytime to your night. Here are reasons against sending late-night work emails:

  1. They most likely won't read it until the next day. If it's related to work, many people often tune out of their work life once they are home. There are a lot of people who either resolve to not check their work emails after work or not to respond to any work emails until they're back at the office. You're most likely not going to get a response if no one is waiting on you, so hold off on emailing until you're back to your cubicle.
  2. You'll be reminding them of work during their downtime. Even if your colleague checks her email after work, you don't want to add an additional stressor and remind her of the daily grind that she's trying to escape from.
  3. The a.m. time stamp is a little iffy. Even if you're more of a night owl, keep those habits to yourself and try not to send off an email at 1 a.m. It might make people wonder what you're doing up in the middle of the night.
  4. You're more prone to making mistakes. The worst typos come out late at night when you type an email while you're feeling really sleepy. Save yourself from some sloppiness and send the email in the morning. You also don't want to make a mistake and send an email meant for your friend to your boss.
  5. You should be sleeping. You need to learn to let go of work and to switch out of the 9-to-5 mode when you're at home. Tackling work emails might make it harder to switch out of work mode.
  6. The alert might wake up the reader. The recipient of the email might leave her smartphone on at night, and if her incoming emails send sound alerts to her cell, the sounds might wake her up from her peaceful slumber.

The Real Reason Koreans Have Amazing Skin - and How You Can, Too

Korean skin care has made its way into the lives of many Americans, and no one knows this better than Soko Glam founder Charlotte Cho. The California native spent five years living in Seoul, South Korea, learning the ins and outs of Korean beauty before launching her online shop, where she sells curated Asian beauty products. The site also doubles as a go-to blog for all things K-beauty. Now she's taken that knowledge and turned it into an addicting read - The Little Book of Skin Care: Korean Beauty Secrets For Healthy, Glowing Skin.

If you devoured her book in a few days, like I did, then you probably ended up buying a couple of sheet masks (from Soko Glam, obvi) and vowed to start a more diligent skin care routine. If you didn't read her book yet, you haven't missed out on any important secrets, because we had the chance to chat with Charlotte at her NYC book launch. The certified esthetician touched on skin care mistakes, myths, and even recommended some of her favorite products. And ladies, she really knows her sh*t.

POPSUGAR: What made you decide to write a book on Korean skin care?

Charlotte Cho: I was not planning on writing [a book] because I was in the middle of esthetician school and doing Soko Glam. I didn't have any time and I didn't think about it, but a literary agency reached out to me and said that Korean beauty is getting more and more popular, we love your blog, and think you have the perfect voice. We ended up working on a proposal and a lot of publishers out there wanted this book and thought it was something people would want to read.

PS: A common advice is to "drink lots of water" for glowing skin. Is this actually true?

CC: Drinking water is great for your overall well-being, but it doesn't necessarily hydrate your skin. Your body doesn't hydrate from the inside out. That's why you need to apply topical products that have humectants, an ingredient that brings nourishment and binds moisture to your skin. That's the only way you'll see results for a dewy glow.

A Flight Attendant Wrote an Open Letter About Why Summer Travel Is the Worst

Travel doesn't necessarily bring out the best in everyone. To an extent, it's understandable; trying to catch a flight on time, dealing with delays, going through security - none of it is exactly fun. Still, there are those who handle it better than others, and if anyone knows best who these people are, it's flight attendants. They see the highs and lows of travelers on a daily basis, so it's no surprise they have some pretty strong opinions about air travel.

One anonymous flight attendant wrote an open letter to travelers about the nightmare that is Summer travel, and if you've ever hopped on a plane during the prime months, you'll completely understand the woes that come along with it. The flight attendant first attempts to liken Summer travel to holiday travel around Christmas, but even the month of December doesn't compare, according to the expert.

"I love my job, I love my colleagues (for the most part), and I even love my passengers. Having said that, there are a few very special breeds of traveler who seem to lose all sense of decency when the temperature rises and the smell of jet fuel permeates the senses. Add to that jam-packed planes on an already stretched air travel infrastructure, and you're ripe for a meltdown at any moment. I see it all, and often wish I never saw it at all," he said.

"There are a few very special breeds of traveler who seem to lose all sense of decency when the temperature rises and the smell of jet fuel permeates the senses."

The flight attendant breaks down the "breeds" of Summer travelers. Enter the father and husband in business class who sends his wife and kids to sit together in economy (what?!) then proceeds to "get tanked on Tanqueray." The attendant even added that in one case as they were preparing to land, the husband came up to use the toilet "and ask if us flight crew would be laying over in Fort Myers. Thankfully, I wasn't - but undeterred, Dad proceeded to hand me his number, suggesting I text if I got bored in my hotel room. While I do not normally mind the attention of a daddy, I promptly tossed the number into the bin for catering to take out." OK.

Then there are "the hordes of high school and university-aged students traveling for service work, church group, holiday or any other reason under the sun," the groups of guys whose sole goal is to get tanked on their flight, and then, of course, the middle schoolers - who sound more cringe-worthy to watch than anyone else.

"Watching them - wherever they're off to - the crew suffers from mortifying secondhand embarrassment as we watch the popular kids to try avoid sitting with the less popular, and remember our own school days. This is a Boeing 737, not the Mean Girls cafeteria, ladies and gentleman."

Luckily, the flight attendant has a soft spot for unaccompanied minors, whom he can relate to, having flown often alone as a child, adding that he "rolls out the red carpet" for these travelers. "I always make a point to let them know I once too had to go back and forth between parents, and to sit back, relax and let us take care of them before they have to pretend to like the next step-parent."

Bottom line based on this (most likely very justified) rant? Be considerate of everyone around you on your Summer travels this year.

"Just remember the next time you step on a plane to jet off on your summer hols that your flight attendants are people too - and we're looking forward to September even more than you," he said. Fair enough. You can read the full letter on The Independent's website.

The Photo of This Baby Will Make You Do a Jaw-Dropping Double Take

Source: Reddit user bretstar

Why, oh why, is this beautiful baby squished into a tube?!

Your first thought upon stumbling onto this photo might very well be, "This has to be a photoshop joke . . . " But it's not a joke at all - this baby is sitting in a very real contraption called a Pigg-O-Stat, and it leaves a lot of room for questions about life, the world, and everything we have come to understand about modern medicine.

The Pigg-O-Stat is an X-ray machine for babies, designed to position and hold infants during the scan without significant complications and to attempt getting a clear image the first time, resulting in less exposure to radiation.

Although the idea is kind of genius, the photo, which was submitted on Reddit, has elicited a lot of confused - and hilarious - comments. Our favorites: "It looks like that baby is about to be sent through the tubes at the bank drive through," and, "Augustus Gloop: The Early Years," a casual Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory reference.

So what do you think about the Pigg-O-Stat? Would you let your baby in one?

8 Things You Need to Know About Millennial Moms

As parents, we often shake our heads at "kids these days" - millennials who would rather stare at the screen of their iPhone than the person sitting across from them at the dinner table, and who, because they got trophies just for showing up, have come to expect the same accolades at their first jobs out of school.

We shudder to think: what happens when those kids become parents?

Well, for starters, it's already happening. Those millennials - widely recognized as people born between 1980 and the early 2000s - have not simply taken over the workforce, surpassing Generation Xers for the first time. According to an analysis of new US Census Bureau data, they're now taking over as parents. Roughly one in five moms is a millennial, and they now account for almost 90 percent of the 1.5 million new mothers within the last year. To put it another way, there are nine million of them raising kids as we speak.

Thankfully, all is not lost for future generations. In fact, most millennial moms don't want to raise their children the same way they were brought up. They want to be more involved than baby boomers, for whom "parenting" wasn't even yet a verb, but they want to hover a little less than those helicopter moms of Gen X. Just as they believe in a diverse portfolio of social media accounts, they are aiming to employ aspects of many different child-raising philosophies in their homes. They see a happy median between baby-wearing, organic-puree-making moms and free-range parents who don't believe in boundaries.

Not only that, but millennial moms are becoming more prevalent in the landscape of modern parenting, and more powerful as well, as companies around the globe begin marketing directly to them.

Here, some of the most intriguing facts about the rise of the millennial mom - and for those parents in their late 20s and early 30s, we're looking at you . . .

Before your kids leave the nest, you'll want to fit in as many family vacations as possible. Planning a trip for the young ones, however, often means countless hours on trip advisor and reading reviews on the best family-friendly destinations. 5 Things You Better Not Put in Guacamole

In today's world, there are few things that we can agree are sacred. Guacamole is one of them. One of life's wonderful gifts that happens to be totally indulgent yet somehow healthy (it's just fruit, leave me alone), guacamole is a traditional Mexican dish, first created by the Aztecs. It's ubiquitous now, found as often in homes as a snack as it as a side in Mexican restaurants. Its popularity has led to the usual culinary tinkering, and sometimes that's great. But other times, it goes way too far.

Nouveau Mexican restaurants (read: not your corner taqueria) have felt the need to chic-ify guacamole and mess with an already immaculate recipe. Amateur home chefs think their familiarity with the dip qualifies them to decide what really goes in guacamole - and we're not talking about avocados. The fallout can be (and has been) huge. The world all but ground to a halt when The New York Times published a controversial recipe for guacamole with green peas in 2015. Two years later, the message is clear. 1) People take guacamole very seriously and 2) We should take other stuff as seriously as we take guacamole.

But you came here wondering how I was going to tell you how to live your life, so let's get back to that. First off, I'm not saying you can't tinker with guacamole. There are certain ingredients that enhance an already good thing. There are things that other people add to guacamole all the time that I don't personally like (begone, onions). You're an adult who is allowed to make your guacamole how you want to make it, and that's your call - but if you're adding any of these below, I'm just saying: you're doing it wrong. Like what you like, but when it comes to guacamole, there is a right and wrong way of doing things, and I'm just trying to save you from embarrassment and the loss of eating something that can be perfect. Worse, my Grandma Pat, one of the world's best Mexican chefs, would laugh you out of your kitchen.

Here's a list of what not to add - unless, you know, you want your party guests talking about your guac behind your back. And if you can't resist any of these? Maybe just don't call it "guacamole."

1. Mayonnaise

When I was in college, my boyfriend at the time repeatedly tried to tell me that not only should mayonnaise be in guacamole, but that you're supposed to make it with mayonnaise. I've mostly blocked out this memory due to its traumatizing nature, but I recall there being some sort of argument for enhancing the texture. Make no mistake: if your avocados are ripe, the texture of your guacamole will be perfect.

2. Peas

The aforementioned "peacamole" recipe from The New York Times incited a firestorm of disgust and commentary that was perhaps unwarranted. Peas don't even really affect the taste that much, they followed up in their own defense. So then: why are we adding peas, anyway?! Haven't you ever heard the phrase, "If it ain't broke, don't add f*cking peas to it"?

3. Sour Cream

An extension of number one and another texturizer, only this adds a sour taste. What are you doing here?!

4. Pomegranate Seeds

Perhaps the hipster-iest ingredient to add to guacamole, pomegranate seeds became so trendy that they ended up studding guacamole in certain restaurants. I am all for creativity, but no, not those, not here. Not this.

5. Cheese

Friend: save the cheese for the nachos. It does not need to be in your guac.

For the record, I make my guacamole the way my grandma did: with just avocados, tomatoes, a little jalapeño, fresh garlic, cilantro (a controversial ingredient itself), lime juice, pepper, and more salt than you think is possibly necessary. It hasn't let anyone down yet.

Why You Should Never, Ever Check Your Luggage on a Plane

If you check luggage on your flight, you're inviting disaster along for your trip. It's not always that dramatic - sometimes it's just a mere inconvenience - but other times you're asking for more trouble than those extra pairs of shoes that made you upgrade to a larger bag are worth. As a frequent traveler, I avoid checking luggage at all costs - because I've learned the hard way. Unless I'm going on a trip spanning several weeks in the dead of Winter and need bulky sweaters and jackets to stay warm, I'm flying stress-free with just my trusted carry-on. I've had my luggage damaged. I've had my luggage lost and received it days later. I've had to switch flights/airlines last minute in order to make a connection at my next destination city and would not have been able to do so if my luggage was already on its way to be loaded onto my original plane. I've experienced the Hunger Games-like rush to grab my bag off the belt in order to make it through customs at an international airport so that I could catch the next leg of my flight. I've dealt with it all, and you probably will too if you check your bags frequently.

I know, there are exceptions to my "no checked bag" rule - if you're traveling with young children who can't lug their own bags (start them young, I say!), then you may not be able to avoid checking. Strollers, car seats - I get it. Maybe you literally can't avoid checking because you need to bring your laptop along for your travels, and there's a controversial rule that bans electronics on your flight. Been there. There are understandably circumstances when it can't be avoided, but if you can avoid checking, don't hesitate to. It's possible, I promise. Here's why you should keep your luggage with you on your next flight.

1. You save money.

This is a pretty significant reason to skip checking a bag, especially depending on what airline you're flying. While some airlines (looking at you, JetBlue and Virgin!) let you have your first bag (as long as it's not oversize) for free, many costs range from $25-$50 per bag for checking. Paying for a bag you have to wait in a long line to check (and one that may get lost or damaged) really feels like adding insult to injury.

2. You'll get through the airport faster.

Carrying on your luggage means avoiding the lines for checking your bags before you go through security. Many airlines allow you to check in to your flight 24 hours ahead of time (international flights can have different policies since passports are involved). You can get your mobile boarding pass and skip the wait to drop your bags by breezing past the kiosks and heading straight for security. Getting through the airport will be much less painful.

3. Your belongings are in safe hands.

You can rest assured that your valuables are in safe hands, because they are in your hands. When you need to bring items on your travels that have great worth to you, you'll have peace of mind knowing where they are at all times because you'll have control over how they are stored and transported.

4. Your luggage itself will be more protected.

It's no secret that your luggage isn't necessarily being handled with care. It's tossed on a conveyor belt and haphazardly transferred (after a roller-coaster ride) to the underbelly of your plane, where it will be crammed among countless other bags. While it's normal for luggage to go through some wear and tear on your travels, carrying it on means keeping it in better condition for longer.

5. It's easier to travel with less-bulky items.

If you plan on traveling from destination to destination instead of staying in one place, having a small carry-on bag is much more manageable than toting around a 50-pound bag full of things you probably don't even need.

6. You are forced to bring only what you need.

Not checking your bags means becoming a smarter packer. Because you have to optimize your bag space, you'll be more inclined to pack just the basics. You can avoid bringing along things you will inevitably realize in hindsight were unnecessary, and soon packing will be like an art form to you. Having an efficient packing system can make air travel so much less stressful.

7. You have everything you need for delays and long layovers.

If you have to camp out in the airport due to unforeseen delays, flight cancellations, or long layovers, having a carry-on with all of your belongings means having access to everything you could need during that time.

8. You don't have to wait for your bag once you deplane.

After hours of a long flight, the last thing anyone feels like doing is waiting around for that beautiful (or shrill, depending on how you look at it) beeping noise that indicates your bags are on their way down the belt. It seems like no matter how early or late you arrive to check in luggage, your bag is always the very last to come trundling down the slide. If it comes at all. Skip this process altogether and head straight out of the airport with your carry-on.

Why You Shouldn't Go to Law School

Should you go to law school? Before you make that decision, let me tell you why dropping out was the best decision I ever made.

Don't Go If You Don't Know What to Do Next

What do you want to be when you grow up? It's a simple question best answered with the imagination of a child. When I was about 8, my answer was an astronaut - I wasn't going to live my whole life without traveling to outer space! Then, I saw a film dramatizing the dangers of space travel and got scared. Scratch the astronaut plan. After that, I never really gave my future career much thought. Until at 19, as a political science major with a 3.9 GPA, I stumbled into the answer many otherwise-directionless overachievers come to: lawyer.

At least I should try, I thought. Keeping my options open would be the responsible thing to do. So I signed up for an unpaid internship with the San Francisco public defender the Summer after my sophomore year in college. It was an eye-opening 10 weeks that involved meeting with clients inside the county jail to conduct one-on-one interviews about their cases. While the issues of justice reform and support for the disadvantaged engaged me, the actual work didn't. But I chalked that up to being the lowest on the food chain and kept on my prelaw path.

Don't Go If It's Your Fallback Plan

The next Summer was LSAT Summer. I signed up and studied just in case. When I got back a decent score, I figured I should just apply and see where I got in. When I got into a good law school in my hometown that had relatively affordable in-state tuition, I decided that I should just go! A law degree can't hurt. Maybe I wouldn't even be a lawyer - I could work for a nonprofit or the government.

After I graduated college, I got a job at a small private practice to gain experience. I loved the co-workers, but again, I didn't love the work. By August, I was 21 and starting my first week as a 1L. And it wasn't so bad. I had the school thing down. When it came time to choose my first Summer internship, I had to decide between working for a policy NGO that worked on homelessness or for a federal judge. The federal judge internship was the more traditional option, so I chose it - just in case. I couldn't turn down the opportunity.

But that Summer, my eyes started to open. I remember calling the public defender I worked for to ask him for a recommendation for my internship, and he said something like, "Oh no! I thought you were one of the smart ones! Do you really want to be a lawyer?!" He seemed genuinely disappointed to hear I was in law school. Was I making a huge mistake?

Don't Go Because You Want to "Change the World"

Working for the judge, I loved watching trials but hated doing the research for the opinions - you know, actual legal work. I would sit in my windowless office and try to focus on personal jurisdiction law and not the latest news on the political, celebrity, or fashion blogs I was obsessed with.

With my second year approaching, the reality that I did not want to be a lawyer sank in. Going along the traditional path - just in case - had gotten me in this situation. If I didn't snap out of it and consider what I really could and not should do with my passion for current events, reading, and writing, I would end up with a career I felt pretty meh about.

Despite having the "hardest year" of law school under my belt and the semester starting in a week, I pulled the plug. I asked for a leave of absence. With the support of my friends and family, I finally gave myself space to answer the question: what do you want to be when you grow up?

My experience in the legal profession wasn't a waste. It taught me that I was more interested in the news being made by cases than the actual law. I also knew I didn't want to work in an old-fashioned industry that often required me to follow inflexible norms and use outdated software like WordPerfect (remember that?!). With a fresh imagination, I decided to target young companies and a career in media.

After a challenging couple months feeling untethered and a bit reckless for the first time in my life, I found a job as the assistant news editor at POPSUGAR. At the time (it was 2007) people didn't quite get "blogs" as much as they did law firms. But quickly I knew I had made the right decision. Now it was my job to read - and create - the articles I loved to devour on my breaks. I haven't looked back.

Don't Go If You're Not 100 Percent Sure You Want to Be a Lawyer

If you're considering going to law school, you should be completely honest with yourself as you answer this question: do you want to be a lawyer? If you don't want to be a lawyer, don't go to law school. In addition to student loans, law school comes with opportunity costs, including three years of your life and a lack of pay. Think of the risks you could take during that time to actually follow your dreams. Taking those risks was the best decision I ever made.

7 Times Trump Proved He Knows Nothing About History

During an interview with SiriusXM, President Donald Trump demonstrated, once again, that he lacks a basic understanding of American history by suggesting former President Andrew Jackson could've stopped the Civil War had he been the president at the time.

"I mean, had Andrew Jackson been a little later, you wouldn't have had the Civil War. He was a very tough person, but he had a big heart," Trump claimed. "And he was really angry that . . . he saw what was happening with regard to the Civil War. He said, 'There's no reason for this.'"

Trump followed with another bizarre assertion. "People don't realize, you know, the Civil War - if you think about it, why," Trump wondered. "People don't ask that question, but why was there the Civil War? Why could that one not have been worked out?"

There's only one problem with Trump's postulation: Jackson died a decade before the Civil War started, so he couldn't have had an opinion on the crisis. Perhaps even less shocking than Trump's erroneous contention about Jackson is Trump's constant and consistent misunderstanding of history. Prepare to shake your head at six other times Trump proved he knows very little about the country he is supposed to run, nor much about countries he is supposed to liaise with.

1. When he seemed to think Frederick Douglass was alive.

During Trump's speech honoring Black History Month on Feb. 1, he suggested that the abolitionist was still alive. Trump described Douglass as "someone who has done a terrific job that is being recognized by more and more people." His comments were ridiculed across social media.

2. When he appeared to forget that Richard Nixon resigned because he broke the law.

In an interview on April 2 with The Washington Post's Bob Woodward, who broke the Watergate story that led to Nixon's impeachment, Trump implied that Nixon failed because of his personality. Woodward asked Trump why he thought Lincoln succeeded and Nixon didn't. Trump blamed Nixon's temperament.

"Nixon failed, I think to a certain extent, because of his personality," Trump told Woodward. "It was just that personality. Very severe, very exclusive. In other words, people couldn't come in. And people didn't like him. I mean, people didn't like him."

Given that Woodward published the story which led to Nixon's resignation, Trump's error is fairly astounding - and Woodward had to remind Trump that Nixon was a criminal. "And he broke the law," Woodward added.

Trump's response is hesitant, but he acknowledged Nixon's crimes. "And he broke the law, yeah. Yeah. He broke the law. Whether that's insecurity . . ." said Trump.

3. When he didn't realize that the Republican party used to be called "The Party of Lincoln."

At a rally in Louisville, KY, on March 20, Trump apparently did not realize the Republican party is often referred to as Lincoln's party. "Great president. Most people don't even know he was a Republican," Trump said. "Does anyone know? Lot of people don't know that."

4. When he confused North Korean leader Kim Jong Un with his father, Kim Jong Il.

While being interviewed on Fox & Friends about North Korean aggression on April 18, Trump conflated current leader Kim Jong Un with his predecessor and father Kim Jong Il.

"They've been talking with this gentleman for a long time," Trump said of America's dialogue with North Korea. "You read Clinton's book, he said, 'Oh, we made such a great peace deal,' and it was a joke." Later, Trump continued to assert his misunderstanding. "Everybody has been outplayed, they've all been outplayed by this gentleman, and we'll see what happens," Trump added with reference to Obama's negotiations.

Trump was evidently unaware that Kim Jong Un has only been in power since 2011 - after the death of his father. So, both Clinton and Obama have deliberated with both leaders - not just one "gentleman" as Trump insinuates.

5. When he said that North Korea used to be a part of China.

Following Trump's meeting with the President of China Xi Jinping, Trump revealed yet another misunderstanding of global history on April 12. Describing his meeting with Xi and their discussion of North Korea, Trump asserted that North Korea was once a part of China. Not only was he wrong, Trump implied that Xi delivered this information. Koreans were outraged by Trump's comments.

6. When the administration failed to mention Jews specifically in its statement for Holocaust Memorial Day

On January 27, Holocaust Remembrance Day, the White House released a particularly tone-deaf statement. While it acknowledged "the victims, survivors, heroes" of the Holocaust, the White House's release did not specifically recognize the six million Jews who died. Many Americans took the administration's omission as an act of anti-Semitism.
