Everything We Know About the Remake of Stephen King's Masterpiece, It
Eight years after first announcing plans to revive Stephen King's It, the remake is on the calendar, release date and all. As the literary horror classic (about an ancient evil entity that most often takes the form of an clown) crawls along toward its release, we're scrounging up as many details as possible. By the time the new adaptation drops, nearly 27 years will have passed since the novel first came to life in the form of an ABC special - which, coincidentally, is almost exactly how long Pennywise the Clown lies dormant in the novel before rising again to start a new reign of terror. With It looming ominously in our cinematic future, it's high time we unearth exactly what you're in for.
Captain Marvel: Everything We Know About Brie Larson's Superhero Movie

9 Decorating Tips Tailored to Millennials
There's lots of chatter about whether millennials prefer to live in the suburbs or the city, but no matter where this demographic choses to reside, it's undeniable that they have unique living needs. Millennials love high-tech features, bold design finishes, and adaptable designs that evolve with them over time. And, since the majority of millennials are in their 20s - hence smaller salaries and families - they tend to live in smaller spaces. For decorating advice tailored to this group of dwellers' needs, we turned to celebrity designer Bobby Berk. Bobby specializes in millennial design and says interior design for millennials is all about smart, original, and creative designs that are both customizable and functional. In this light, he has nine tips that will help millennials optimize even the smallest of spaces.
These Abandoned Disney Park Photos Look Like Scenes From a Postapocalyptic World
When we think of Disney World, "creepy" doesn't usually come to mind. But photos of Walt Disney World's first water park, called Disney's River Country, are making us rethink just how sugary sweet all things Disney-related really are. The park, now abandoned, opened in 1976 and closed up shop 25 years later. Just last year, a pool within the park was filled with concrete.
Photojournalist Seph Lawless, who explores eerie abandoned locations all over the country, captured images inside the Orlando park, from vine-covered bridges to overgrown trees and mud-laden former water slides. Admidst the ruins, you can still imagine the former glory of the park, but that glory has long since been lost.
Lawless will include the Disney park's images in his upcoming book, Abandoned: Hauntingly Beautiful Deserted Theme Parks, out in October 2017. Take a look at the apocalypse-like scene at Disney World's first water park ahead, and follow Seph's work on his Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook.
The 10 Best Places to Watch the Solar Eclipse in the US
Mark your calendars now: the next total solar eclipse is coming on Aug. 21. You don't want to miss it - considering the last time this happened in the US was in 1991. It's become such a must-see event that the solar eclipse has a nickname: the Great American Eclipse! It's also why we've picked out a few destinations to see it in the US ahead.
Why is a solar eclipse so special? It's when the moon covers the sun for a few minutes, essentially plunging wherever you are into a bit of darkness. NASA estimates that 391 million people will see it in the US. The solar eclipse starts in Oregon at 9:05 a.m. PT and will end in Charleston, SC, at 2:48 p.m. ET. Keep reading to see where you should see it, along with the time of the eclipse.
John Legend Singing About 4-Hour-Long Erections Is Surprisingly Pleasing to the Ear
James Corden is back at it again with the second episode of Carpool Karaoke: The Series, and this time he has two of the biggest and most beautiful voices in his car: Alicia Keys and John Legend. However, instead of singing their smash hits during the ride, The Late Late Show host had them make up songs on the spot about the weirdest things. While Alicia blows us away with her melody about bad body odor, John's soulful tune about a long-lasting erection is surprisingly incredibly sexy. Catch all the craziness above, and watch the full episode on Apple Music.

Kate Middleton and Princess Diana Received This 1 Piece of Jewelry More Precious Than Diamonds
Just like the late Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton owns plenty of precious diamond jewels and tiaras. While many of them have been physically passed down from Queen Elizabeth II or Princess Diana, who wore her fair share of bling, there were times Kate and Diana forwent gemstones and pearls for a simple engraved pendant.
Diana's circle plate was etched with "William" and was a gift from Prince Charles after the birth of their son in 1982. Meanwhile, it's reported that Pippa bought Kate her own version from London boutique Merci Maman, confirmed on a company blog post:
"Family was one of the closest things to Diana's heart so it's no surprise that this shone through in her jewelery, featuring personalized pieces and meaningful charms . . . In 2013, Pippa Middleton continued this family tradition by giving her sister Kate, The Duchess of Cambridge, our Personalized Duchess Necklace to celebrate the birth of Prince George. Featuring a hand-engraved disc with the Prince's full name, a small boy charm and a heart engraved with a 'W' to represent Prince William."
Read on to get a closer look at both sentimental chains on Kate and Diana, then shop the exact design should you want to start the trend in your own family.

This Is How All Your Favorite Chefs Make Scrambled Eggs
One of the most basic recipes everyone learns is scrambled eggs, but the truth is perfectly scrambled eggs are a lot trickier than they seem. Much like the classic omelet, scrambling eggs is one cooking method on which many chefs differ. To whisk in a bowl or in the pan? To add dairy or to not? Minor tweaks can make huge differences in something so basic, and we guarantee you'll want to change up your scrambled egg routine with tips from these experts - they know a thing or two about recipe developing. Here's how some of our favorite chefs scramble their eggs (we're not kidding when we say Gordon Ramsay's method is a game changer).
Alton Brown: Whisk With Whole Milk
Simple yet effective is the name of the game in Alton Brown's scrambled egg recipe. Adding whole milk isn't his only tip, though. "Odds are you're going to be serving these on a plate. If so, I strongly suggest you park an ovensafe one in a low oven or in hot water while you're cooking. Cold plates suck the heat right out of food," his recipe description reads.
Anthony Bourdain: Skip the Dairy
Anthony Bourdain doesn't condone adding milk or cream to scrambled eggs - or anything, for that matter. "I just don't feel that milk or cream adds anything. I believe that a scrambled egg is principally about the egg," the Appetites author says in a video about the best way to cook scrambled eggs. Anthony's other pro tip is to be careful not to overbeat the eggs; you want some white parts remaining. He cooks them in a heated pan with warm, foaming butter and carefully pushes them around in a figure-eight pattern to create soft folds.
Giada De Laurentiis: Frittata Cupcakes
Giada's preferred method of scrambling eggs involves a mini muffin tin - she likes to make frittata cupcakes. She told POPSUGAR in an interview, "I love making my little cupcakes - frittata cupcakes. I just stick whatever's left in the fridge. Whatever it is that was from the night before, whether it's leftover pasta, leftover meat, leftover vegetables . . . Another favorite is lox, scrambled eggs, and peas - for a little color. For a Sunday morning, it's one of my favorite go-to breakfasts."
Gordon Ramsay: Low and Slow (With a Secret Ingredient)
Gordon Ramsay's scrambled eggs recipe is one everyone must try at least once. The finished product looks more like custard, and thanks to his cooking method and a secret ingredient, they're melt-in-your-mouth good.
Paula Deen: With Water and Vidalia Onions
"We can't operate without Vidalia onions around here," Paula Deen said of her scrambled eggs in an interview with POPSUGAR. In addition to caramelized onions, Paula adds a splash of water to her eggs. "Water doesn't make it as tough as milk," she says. The real kicker, though, is to scramble the eggs in both butter and bacon fat to get the most flavor.
Chrissy Teigen: "Cheesy" Eggs, Hold the Cheese
Chrissy Teigen swears by her method of creating "cheesy" eggs without the cheese, thanks to her secret ingredient: heavy cream. Her tip for getting them as creamy as possible with no browned spots? "Don't stop gently stirring and scraping (edges and all) for more than a few seconds!"
The Pioneer Woman: Smoked Salmon and Chives
Like most Pioneer Woman recipes, this one sounds delightful. Calling them the "best scrambled eggs ever", Ree Drummond suggests sprinkling in chopped smoked salmon after the eggs are cooked and then garnishing with chopped fresh chives.
Mario Batali: Topped With Shaved Truffle
Leave it to Mario Batali to bring some serious culinary chops to such a basic recipe. To make scrambled eggs special, Mario suggests adding mascarpone or parmesan cheese, but to make them "spectacular," garnish with shaved truffle.
Katie Lee: Back to Basics
Food Network host Katie Lee has a strictly back-to-basics approach to scrambled eggs. She melts butter in a skillet and cooks the eggs low and slow. "It is important to keep the heat low when cooking eggs so as not to burn them," Katie told POPSUGAR in an interview.
Welp, Daniel Craig Is Definitely Coming Back to James Bond
Following 2015's Spectre, Daniel Craig has been cagey about his potential return to the James Bond franchise. Not only did he (in)famously tell a reporter that he'd "rather slash [his] wrists" than ever play 007 again, but there have been numerous campaigns for other actors to take up the mantle, from Idris Elba to Charlize Theron. Though the Logan Lucky actor has refused to confirm one way or another if he'll play the titular spy in the next Bond film, that all changed during his Tuesday night appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
While chatting with Colbert, Craig confirmed that "yes," he'll be back, and that he's been sitting on the news for a couple of months. "We've been discussing it, we've just been trying to figure things out," he said. "I always wanted to, I needed a break." The as-yet-untitled Bond film will be the 25th in the series and is set for a November 2019 release date. "I think this is it. I just want to go out on a high note," he added, noting that it will be his last outing as James Bond. "I can't wait."
33 Times You Wanted Whatever Jennifer Lawrence Was Having
In the seven years since Jennifer Lawrence's breakout role in 2010's Winter's Bone, the actress has established herself as the ultimate onscreen badass and Hollywood's most desirable BFF, the combination of which makes her box office and newsstand gold. Even better, her infectious personality isn't a PR product - after all, she was bringing on the LOL-worthy moments way before she got super famous, and she clearly lacks the filter necessary to emulate anyone else's path to fame. Case in point: her candid interview with Vanity Fair about that nude-photo hacking incident in November 2014, or the way she spoke at length to Glamour about America's misconceptions of her. Let's look back at all the times we could not hide our admiration for the daring A-lister.

Relive the Moment Bette Midler Dusted Off Her Winifred Sanderson Costume From Hocus Pocus
It seems like celebrities constantly try and outdo each other on Halloween every year, but nobody (and we mean nobody, not even costume queen Heidi Klum) can top what Bette Midler did in 2016. The legendary actress showed up at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City to suck the lives out of little children. Well, not really. Bette, who is the founder of the New York Restoration Project, was on hand to attend the organization's Hulaween Bash. She dusted off her broom to go as her beloved Hocus Pocus character Winifred Sanderson, making it seem like no time has passed since a virgin lit the black flame candle back in 1993.
In addition to posing with fellow attendees Kathy Griffin and Marc Jacobs (yep, that's him in the bikini costume), Bette also linked up with her daughter, Sophie von Haselberg, and brought back some of Winifred's signature poses. And her costume was almost identical to the one she wore in the classic Halloween movie. Red hair? Check. Big teeth? Check. Being an overall badass? Check.
Everything You Need to Know About Common Core
We've all seen the jokes about Common Core fails and heard parents lament about not being able to help their children with homework under the complex new math standards, but few people seem to understand what the controversial standards really are.
Who Created It?
The Common Core States Standard (CCSS) is a set of national academic goals set up by a joint effort of the National Governor's Association (NGA) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), which is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization made up of public officials in the education sector of the government.
Three men, including former high school algebra teacher Phil Daro, former head of the math department at the University of Arizona William McCallum, and mathematician Jason Zimba, actually wrote the new curriculum between 2009 and 2010.
Why Were the Standards Implemented?
The simplest explanation of the initiative is that it works to homogenize and benchmark the learning standards for students across all the states at the end of each year from grades K-12. Prior to the program's implementation in 2010, individual states were able to set their own standards and measurements, leaving a lot of room for inconsistencies in each state's curriculum requirements.
The purpose is to make sure all American high school graduates have the same baseline of knowledge in math and English. Why just math and English? Because the CCSS felt that these were the two main subjects on which all other academic subjects are built upon and therefore, they narrowed down the focus for standardization.
The initiative also seeks to alleviate the growing knowledge gap between American high school graduates and those in the rest of the world. The U.S. lags behind most of Europe, Far East Asia, and Scandinavia in math, science, and reading.
In 2008, the NGA released a report that showed American teenagers' ranking on international assessments in 2006. At that time, U.S. students ranked 25th place in math and 21st place in science, which was worrisome news given the globalization of the world's economy. In the report, it was argued that since high school students that graduated with higher math abilities earned approximately 12 percent more income in the future, raising American students' knowledge base over the next 20 years could increase the U.S. GDP by an extra 36 percent in 75 years.
This set into place the foundation for the Common Core practice of trying to get all states to standardize learning baselines for students on an international level.
Why Is There Backlash?
This all seems like a good idea on the surface, but the response from states, politicians, educators, and parents have been mixed. Thus far, 45 states have voluntarily adopted the CCSS, but three of those states have since decided to repeal (or replace) the curriculum. Critics fear the possibility of a national curriculum controlled by the federal government while others worry about educators' lack of control to craft individualized lessons under rigid and regulated standards. Another common complaint of the initiative is the lack of public dialogue that was conducted prior to the standardization going into place.
Many critics have called the new math processes too complex and hard to learn with celebrities even ranting about the Common Core.
Seemingly though, teachers are more supportive of the new initiative with the National Education Association asserting that 76 percent of their teachers support the Common Core.
What Can Parents Do?
Though the future of the Common Core remains in flux with President Trump vowing to get rid of the standards, there are a few steps that parents can take to help their children comprehend the new learning practices:
- Visit the Common Core website and utilize the resources provided for each state
- Talk to your child's teacher and try to work through problems together
- Use YouTube tutorials and learn the new way to do math; it will start to make sense once you get past the initial confusion
- Have your child attempt to teach you the new methods; it's a great way for them to absorb the concepts
Home Alone Star John Heard's Cause of Death Revealed
John Heard passed away at the age of 72 last month, and now his cause of death has been revealed. The actor - best known for his role as Peter McCallister, the beloved dad in the Home Alone movies, and his Emmy-nominated role on HBO's The Sopranos - died after suffering a heart attack brought on by heart disease. John was found dead at a hotel in Palo Alto, CA, on July 21, according to sources close to the family. He underwent minor back surgery two days before his death, but officials says that did not play a role in his passing. John is survived by his two sons, John Matthew and Max, and his daughter, Annika.
Is the Rose Gold iPhone Going Away? An Investigation
It's almost the holidays - well, at least the annual September holiday when Apple releases new iPhones to the world. Last year, we saw the introduction of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus (and the iPhone SE earlier in the year) and quickly became obsessed with portrait mode. And while plenty of rumors are making this year's iPhone 8 sound worth the wait (and money), there's also some potential bad news: no more rose gold color.
That's right, says security analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who's uncovered reliable rumors in the past - the new iPhone 8, as well as the new iPhone 7S and 7S Plus, will no longer come in rose gold, according to MacRumors. Instead, the new iPhones will only be available in black, silver, and a copper blush-looking gold. Leaked photos of the new color showed up on Chinese social media app Weibo, and one popular YouTuber also showed off the new color on a mockup iPhone.
As you can see, the new copper blush gold option still looks incredibly similar to the rose gold color. It's a bit darker, but still pretty. More importantly, rumors have been wrong in the past. Before the iPhone 7 was released, rumors pointed to the phone coming with wireless charging and a smart connector - which as we know now, didn't happen. So there's a slight chance that even though rose gold has been around for three years, it's not going away (yet).
For now, keep calm, hold your rose gold iPhone safe, and wait until September rolls around before saying goodbye.
When You See the Color of This Asian Bride's Fifth Wedding Dress, You'll Do a Double Take
When lifestyle writer Melissa C. Koh married James Chen at the Ritz Carlton in Millenia, Singapore, she brought along five wedding dresses for the occasion. But these weren't your standard gowns - they were all full-on princess looks, each design more dazzling than the one before.
While Melissa walked the aisle in a special Amanda Lee number with a folded tier skirt and veil (complete with some very special Tiffany & Co. jewels and Gianvito Rossi pumps, mind you), she coordinated her strapless cloud of a dress with a tiara for her first dance and later switched into a blue - yes, we said blue! - floor-sweeping sheath with floral appliqué and a cape train that seemed to go for miles.
Of course, her friends and family kept track of every look, documenting the majestic snaps on Instagram. Read on for a peek, and just wait until you see those confetti shots on the dance floor.

14 Everyday Struggles of Bilingual People
I speak 2.5 languages. I'm fluent in Spanish (my birth language) and English, and I know enough Italian to help a lost tourist in the subway. Though being able to communicate in more than one tongue has its serious benefits - there are more jobs available to me, I have an easier time when traveling abroad, some studies even say we're smarter (tooting my own horn here) - there are struggles. Boy, are there struggles.
More than once, I have spoken Spanish to someone who has no idea what I'm saying, and words have come out of my mouth in a total jumble of Spanglish that not even I understand. After years of suffering, Krystal was first diagnosed with Crohn's disease when she was 15 years old. And while this debilitating condition causes inflammation of the digestive system and often has negative preconceived notions, Krystal was thrilled to know what was finally wrong.
Before her Crohn's diagnosis, Krystal was constantly sick with diarrhea and vomiting that felt like poison. Before her 22nd birthday, she had major surgery to have her large intestine, part of her small intestine, and her anus removed. An ileostomy bag was fitted, and Krystal empties her bag every few hours, changes it every few days, and tucks it into her underwear during her active life as a new mom. But most importantly, she has her life back.
"I just didn't want to be dying anymore, because that's what it felt like," she said. "I just wanted to be healthy and have a different life, because the life I was living wasn't one."
Krystal is now a mother of two - she has 4-year-old Lukas and 4-moth-old Arabella - and she is embracing her life as a Bag Lady Mama with her new Facebook page, which is dedicated to posting body-positive selfies and motivational anecdotes.
Not only did Krystal have to adjust to her stoma - a small opening to the abdomen that connects to her ileostomy bag - during her journey to motherhood, but she also had to deal with the ramifications of the surgery. Krystal was told that she was unable to have a vaginal delivery - and went on to have two - and experienced a perforated bowel that turned septic shortly after her first pregnancy. After Lukas's birth, Krystal suffered four miscarriages before welcoming Arabella.
"I felt that these photos would be great to share with other mamas or women who are trying to have babies with an ostomy," said Krystal. "There is not a lot out there about successful pregnancies or natural delivery. I wanted others to know that you can have a baby naturally despite having had surgery." Krystal said that she didn't love - let alone like - her postpartum body after having her son, but she feels differently the second time around. "I hope these photos inspire someone else to just keep fighting because one day it will be OK!" said Krystal.
Forget That Pregnancy Glow - This Photographer Captures Real-Life Maternity Photos
Pregnancy can be the most beautiful time of a woman's life, and family photographer Danielle Guenther knows how to capture it stunningly. But she also knows that it isn't always rosy and full of that "natural glow" everyone talks about. It's exhausting. It's uncomfortable. It's even embarrassing sometimes. So the Hoboken, NJ-based Guenther is setting out to show it in all of its glory (and exaggerated form) in her new series, "What the BUMP!?" - a collection of hysterical, artfully staged photos that show the truth about pregnancy.
Guenther is no stranger to the world of real-life scenario photography. Her Best Case Scenario series that depicts the true chaos that is parenting has been a hit with parents who are tired of seeing beautifully staged family photos that so frequently appear in our Instagram feeds. Her new series, includes expectant mamas in familiar settings like business meetings, shopping with older, wilder kids, and an overdue mom doing just about anything to go into labor (funny enough, eight hours after shooting that scene, the woman did go into labor!).
Guenther has plenty more ideas floating in her head and has already booked a few more sessions in the coming weeks - she just needs more pregnant ladies to serve as her models!
Read on to see the entire What the BUMP!? collection, and follow Guenther on Instagram to see all of her work.

How a Mom of 3 Created the Most Efficient Kitchen Ever
Despite having two young daughters and a newborn baby girl, Lay Baby Lay blogger Joni Lay's kitchen is serenity personified. That wasn't always the case, though. Like many people who loathe their kitchens, Joni's biggest gripe with her pre-renovation kitchen was the lack of storage and inefficient use of space.
The chaos of her cramped kitchen only felt heightened by the dated design features she and husband Chip inherited when they bought the house - think black-and-white checkerboard floors and particleboard countertops. When an opportunity to work with Home Depot on a kitchen renovation arose, Joni and Chip jumped at the chance to wipe the kitchen slate clean, and the result is pretty breathtaking.

The 1-Pot Pasta Recipe You'll Make on Repeat From Ina Garten
Ina Garten, aka The Barefoot Contessa, can do no wrong. Any time I see a recipe of hers that looks promising for dinner, I pounce. Such was the case when I spotted her weeknight bolognese, a recipe that gives you al dente orecchiette topped with homemade tomato sauce in fewer than 45 minutes. This version requires just one pot (for the sauce) and a few staple Italian ingredients.
Red pepper flakes, oregano, and nutmeg bring out the flavors of tangy San Marzano tomatoes and lean ground sirloin. The sauce, flavored with red wine, thickened with a bit of heavy cream, and beautified with flecks of basil, fills each bite of shell pasta. The final product is sprinkled with as much Parmesan as your heart desires (and served with a couple of glasses of your favorite red wine). I don't want to downplay the sophisticated flavor profile of the dish, but it almost tastes like a perfect piece of garlic bread, which is never a bad thing in my book.
My mom makes this at least once a month and says the recipe is very forgiving; you can substitute pork for beef, penne for orecchiette, etc. And if you chop and measure the ingredients before you turn on the stove, cooking is a breeze. After all, how hard can making pasta sauce be when most of the "work" involves breathing in the amazing aromas of tomatoes and spices? Make this lifesaving bolognese once, and you'll see why it's good enough - and easy enough - to make on even the longest of week days.

The Details Surrounding Elvis Presley's Death Will Still Upset You Nearly 40 Years Later
It's hard to believe it's been almost 40 years since Elvis Presley died. The rock and roll legend was just 42 years old when he tragically passed away on Aug. 16, 1977. Elvis was in one of the bathrooms of his Graceland mansion in Memphis, TN, when he suffered a heart attack and collapsed on the floor at approximately 2 p.m. He was later found face down in front of the toilet and rushed to Baptist Memorial Hospital, where doctors tried to resuscitate him. After several failed attempts, Elvis was pronounced dead an hour later and his body was shipped to the morgue, where an autopsy was conducted that same afternoon.
Just three days later, a coroner's report was released, revealing that Elvis's cause of death was "hypertensive cardiovascular disease with atherosclerotic heart disease," also known as a heart attack. However, two months later, a toxicology report found 14 drugs in Elvis's system, including morphine, methaqualone, and codeine at 10 times the therapeutic drug level. Elvis's personal doctor, Dr. George Nichopoulos, remained adamant that Elvis died from natural causes and not a drug overdose, but because of the toxicology report results, the Tennessee Board of Health began an investigation into Elvis's death and Dr. Nichopoulos.
Once the investigation was complete, evidence showed that Dr. Nichopoulos wrote Elvis prescriptions for at least 8,805 pills, tablets, vials, and injectables from January 1977 to August 1977. Dr. Nichopoulos claimed he only did so because Elvis was hooked on painkillers, and therefore this was the only way to keep him away from other dangerous drugs. In 1980, he was charged with prescribing excessive amounts of drugs to Elvis and other patients. He was later acquitted of all charges, but in 1995, the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners revoked his medical license. He later passed away at age 88 in February 2016.
While Elvis's cause of death was ruled a heart attack, there are still several theories surrounding his death. One of them is that he's not actually dead and that he faked his own death in order to live a private life. In fact, some people claim to have spotted him at his 82nd birthday celebration in Graceland earlier this year, and there's even a Facebook group dedicated to keeping track of all of his reported sightings. No matter what your believe, the one thing we can all agree on is that Elvis was an icon who died too soon.

Why Breastfeeding Gave Me Nightmarish Panic Attacks
Imagine an intruder standing behind you, poised to attack. Imagine the jolt of terror you'd feel, the gut-seizing shock, the sheer panic. Now imagine that you have to experience this awful feeling not once, not twice, but multiple times every day . . . and that it isn't brought about by a literal intruder, but by an activity that actually makes most people feel good: breastfeeding.
We all know by now that there are a ton of good reasons to breastfeed. One of those reasons - mentioned in every piece of pro-nursing literature ever - is the warm and fuzzy feeling associated with it. The pituitary glands of nursing moms release oxytocin during every session, which is one of the hormones responsible for the letdown reflex that makes the milk flow. But oxytocin is also the same hormone involved in lovely things, such as emotional connection and stress relief, so it also promotes mother-baby bonding by making Mom feel all nice and gushy . . . euphoric, even . . . kind of like that "I love everybody" feeling when you've had one glass of wine too many.
So when I gave birth to my son in January 2008, I fully expected to feel that beautiful hormonal rush. But I was in for a nasty surprise . . . because I didn't feel it. At all. What I felt instead was a sudden, searing lightning bolt of fear at every single letdown. As the milk started to flow, so did the uncontrollable currents of fright. I would tense up so tightly I'd get muscle cramps, literally shuddering until the dreadful wave passed. More than once, I wrenched my neck looking over my shoulder for the threat that I logically knew wasn't there, but instinct forced me to look anyway. It was crazy. I thought I was crazy. A mother with this kind of weird reaction to breastfeeding? It certainly wasn't normal. The books and websites, after all, had never mentioned such a thing. There had to be something wrong with me.
The books and websites, after all, had never mentioned such a thing. There had to be something wrong with me.
Like anyone who thinks they're in some way abnormal, I consulted Google. I wasn't even sure what to type in; I think I ended up going with "I feel anxious while nursing." I'm no slouch at internet research, but I found absolutely nothing. I was too intimidated to ask my doctor. I mean, what if he thought I was too imbalanced to care for my baby? So I did the only thing I could do: switched to formula. My son was fine, I stopped having panic attacks, and life resumed as normal.
Late in 2009, I gave birth to my next son, and once again I was reminded left and right about how beneficial breastfeeding can be, so I vowed to give it another try. But I found myself in the same disturbing boat, feeling panicky instead of relaxed at every feeding. Desperate to get to the bottom of this mystery, I turned to the internet again - and this time it paid off. Between the first time I searched for it and the second, less than two years later, it had been identified as an issue by Alia Macrina Heise, a certified lactation consultant and mother of three who had also grappled with this type of experience. She gave the demon a name (Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex, or D-MER) and discovered that it wasn't psychological at all, but a legitimate physiological response to breastfeeding. I cried with relief that I wasn't crazy . . . and that I wasn't alone.
In a nutshell, D-MER is a condition triggered by dopamine, another "feel-good" hormone associated with breastfeeding. Dopamine inhibits the production of prolactin, which is necessary for letdown, so the body naturally produces less of it during nursing; but in sufferers of D-MER, the dopamine level plunges so quickly that it causes momentary feelings of sadness, rage, despair, or - in my case - overwhelming anxiety. It's rare, but now that "it" has a name, more and more women are recognizing that this is indeed what they've been experiencing. Unfortunately, there's little in the way of direct research on the condition, but as it gains notoriety through the shared experiences of the women who suffer from it, hopefully the scientific community will take more notice.
For me, the knowledge that it wasn't just in my head was all the treatment I needed. I still had the surge of fear at the beginning of every feeding - sometimes it lasted two or three minutes - but I felt much more in control now that I knew it was just my body having a temporary (if strange and unnerving) response. It was much easier to ride the feeling out and wait for the panic to subside; I would picture the hormonal rollercoaster going on within my body and breathe. I ended up successfully nursing my son - and the next, three years later - despite the D-MER.
So if you're one of the moms whose breastfeeding reality differs vastly from the things you've read, take heart: it's not just you, it's not wrong, and it doesn't have to keep you from nursing. It's simply your body's unique reaction, as involuntary as a sneeze . . . and knowing that fact is more than half the battle.
