In Defense of Reading Spoilers Religiously

Spoiler alert: This article will have spoilers for shows and movies that you should have already seen by now, so get over it.

I've never seen Citizen Kane, but I know exactly what "rosebud" means; I knew Bruce Willis was dead the whole time I was watching The Sixth Sense; and I was mentally and emotionally prepared for the Red Wedding long before Catelyn Stark's throat was slit on Game of Thrones. Final confession: I frequently flip to the last page of a book to read the ending. I hate surprises.

I religiously seek out spoilers and have since I was a kid. No, I'm not the jerk who posts things on Facebook and ruins your favorite show for you. I do, however, firmly believe that reading spoilers can enhance our viewing and reading experiences tenfold. Don't believe me? There's a method to my so-called madness.

Have you ever found yourself not able to focus on the details of a TV show, movie, or book because you're too caught up in the bottom line? Have you missed artful subtleties (arguably the best part of it all) because you just had to know if your favorite character was going to live or die - and that's all you could focus on?

Spoiling the plot by no means ruins the beauty of the work, as long as there is beauty beyond the "bottom line."

I don't miss a damn thing. Why? Because I already know the answer to the bigger questions and usually way before all those spoiler-averse fans out there. In knowing the end game by actively seeking out the major plot points, you're able to admire and enjoy the wonderful intricacies of the art with more attention. You can dissect the clues you would have missed if you didn't know to be looking out for them. Sure, you can always go back and rewatch or reread the story, but I'm already two steps ahead of you by then and on to the next spoiler.

More importantly, if you're watching or reading something that's entirely plot-driven, is it worth investing your time in anyway? A truly good work should have layers to it so that even if you strip away one aspect, such as the element of surprise, there's still so much more to be explored. Stories that only focus on plot twists to move the narrative along are rarely worth getting sad about being spoiled on. Spoiling the plot by no means ruins the beauty of the work, as long as there is beauty beyond the "bottom line."

For me, the path characters take to get to those big moments is where the true artistry lies and what I take the most interest in. Reading about those moments doesn't spoil anything for me; it only makes me more excited to see how the person develops in the way that leads them there.

A study by UC San Diego psychology Professor Nicholas Christenfeld supports my claims; it found that spoilers can actually make a story more enjoyable. Christenfeld's research showed that having extra information about artworks can make them "more satisfying," as can the predictability of an experience; for example, the more you go to Disneyland, the more memories you make there and the more you love it. You know what to expect, and you like that.

In Christenfeld's initial experiment, two groups read three short mystery stories. One group was "accidentally" spoiled on the endings, the other was not. "Across all three genres spoilers actually were enhancers," said Christenfeld. When he tried a variation of the experiment, spilling the beans on the story in the middle of it rather than at the beginning, the results were the same. "It turns out even halfway through a story, you enjoy a spoiled story more, before you get to that spoiled ending," he said.

"If you know the ending as you watch it, you can understand what the filmmaker is doing. You get to see this broader view, and essentially understand the story more fluently," Christenfeld explained.

In the episodes leading up to the Red Wedding, the process of picking out all of the clues that led up to the massacre was so much more fun for me than if I had gone in blind to the event.

Reading spoilers didn't detract from the haunting piano music that played as Cersei Lannister's plot to destroy the High Sparrow and all those who've wronged her unfolded at the end of season six in Game of Thrones. Each note still sent chills down my spine even though I knew what was coming. Watching her savor her victory while her son threw himself out the window was no less jarring. The anticipation of all that I knew was on the way and the expectation for how it would play out only made the story that much more satisfying to see. And if Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen are actually going to f*ck, I'm going to need to know way beforehand so I can collect myself and find a sturdy seat (and some smelling salts) before it all goes down.

13 Reasons Your Kid Is a Brat That Are Completely Your Fault

Parenting can feel like an uphill battle, no matter your child's age. Not only is there a lot of pressure, but it also feels like whatever you're doing is constantly being scrutinized by strangers, friends, and family.

If you're involved in your kids' lives, then you hear that you're a helicopter parent and you're raising a fragile child. If you leave your children alone and try to let them work things out on their own, then you're neglectful. It seems as though no matter what there's someone there to tell you that you're doing it wrong.

However, a lot of issues with brattiness are the parents' fault - or at least become the parents' responsibility to fix. Although children might pick up bad behavior by modeling what they see on TV or at school, parents are still to blame if they don't put an end to it or just attribute it to age.

"It's not really fair; it's just kind of the way it is," Elaine Rose Glickman, author of Your Kid's a Brat and It's All Your Fault, told POPSUGAR. "If we don't teach our kids a better way, nobody else is stepping up to do so."

The first step to breaking that bratty behavior is realizing what you're doing to contribute to it. Here, the 13 problematic things that parents of spoiled kids do.

These Are the 15 Movies From the '90s That You Need to Watch With Your Kids

Growing up in the '90s was the best of both worlds: I had epic '80s movies to play over and over again, and I got to live through 10 years of amazing film releases, many of which have stuck with me my whole life (and are still on constant rotation).

I spent half of 1997 begging my mom to buy me the Heart of the Ocean necklace, the better part of the late '90s trying to re-create "The Blob" with my camp friends (to no avail and with only minor injuries), and most of the decade singing "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)," "My Girl," and "We Are the Champions" at the top of my lungs. It was an exciting time to be alive, and though your children may never know what it was like to wait for a VHS tape to rewind (torture), these films need to be on a must-watch list so they can get a proper education of '90s culture.

An Evil Genius Swapped Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un's Hair and We Can't Look Away

Hairswap

President Donald Trump and North Korea's Kim Jong-un may be dominating the news right now with a looming threat of all-out war, but it certainly isn't keeping the internet from poking a bit of fun at the two superpowerful men. And if the above photo is any indication, the games have just begun.

A Reddit user posted a diptych of Trump and Jong-un with their hair meticulously swapped on Aug. 10, coinciding with the publication of French magazine Libération's take on the very same idea, and it features an outstandingly blond, Trump-ified version of the North Korean leader. The emergence of these memes is in line with a larger trend of face swapping and hair swapping the men and women we see on TV all the time, which began in earnest in the lead-up to the 2012 election and has evolved as the years have progressed. Here, we see the natural evolution of the swap: making everyone - and everything - look like our wispy-haired, strangely-colored president.

It's only a matter of time before we get a Trump face swap Snapchat filter, but until then, you can work your own magic online in the Trump's Hair tool. And if you're anything like us, you'll be gazing at this downright terrifying yet unbearably fascinating photo all day long.

I'm One of Those Girls Who Plucked Off All My Eyebrows - Here's How I Got Them Back

Some of you might be able to sympathize with this horror story: when I was in high school, it was cool to pluck off all your eyebrows. I was pretty much left with one tiny straight line that looked like I drew it on with a gel pen. At that time I felt really cool and thought I looked like Kate Moss, but eventually I realized it was a mistake. For years after, I always struggled to grow them back, which was even harder because I have extremely thin and light blond hair that was already sparse and barely showed up on my skin. Throughout the last 10 years, I've used dozens of different powders, pens, gels, and pencils, but nothing ever really looked natural or made me feel confident.

About two years ago, a coworker who had insanely long lashes told me she used this product to make her eyelashes grow longer. RevitaLash is a cosmetic formula developed to help improve flexibility, moisture, and shine while increasing the lushness of your lashes. Once my friend told me about this, a light bulb immediately went off in my head that maybe I could use this to grow my eyebrows. In less than 30 seconds, I was back at my desk researching the product and discovered that the brand also has a formula for your eyebrows: RevitaBrow ($58). I instantly purchased the serum with two-day shipping. I was excited.

A few days later, I received my RevitaBrow in the mail, and I was initially hesitant because I get freaked out using new products, especially on my face or around my eyes. But in this case, I was desperate for fuller brows and gave it a go. Within just two months, I noticed my eyebrows had definitely started growing, and by the time I hit six months, they were at a place I never knew I could get them. I do have to say because my hair is so fair that I don't see the full thickness of my eyebrows until I dye them (which I do on a monthly basis), but once they are my preferable darker shade, I can't believe that full thickness is actually mine!

I often get compliments on my eyebrow fullness, and it really means the world to me after all the struggles it took to achieve them. I still use a pencil every day because, like most people, I still get bald spots and like to create a fuller but still natural look. I don't use the product every day anymore, maybe just a few times a week when I remember. When I use it, I still see a difference when it comes to keeping up the fullness. Overall, this product is a huge win for me. Eyebrows really frame your face, and I can't express enough how much this product changed my brows.

Who Is Cersei's Baby Daddy on Game of Thrones? An Investigation

The following contains spoilers for Game of Thrones season seven.

We always go into episodes of Game of Thrones expecting some weirdness, but even we were thrown for a loop when Cersei Lannister casually announces her pregnancy halfway through season seven. Um, what? Between building dragon arrows and torturing her enemies to death, when did she even have time to conceive a child? Sure, this season's timeline has been weird, but we're unsure whether it's been long enough for Cersei to discover an unplanned pregnancy.

The news also perturbed us because, as weird as their romance is, Cersei and Jaime have spent plenty of time apart during the seventh season. They've definitely had some time together, but he has also gone off to fight in two different battles in season seven, too. Could the baby be somebody else's, or even not exist at all? Or perhaps their timing was just right.

To uncover the truth about Cersei's baby daddy - and what a pregnancy could mean for her fate - we took a page out of Maury's book. Let's play a game of "Who got Cersei pregnant?"!

1 Woman Swiftly Shut Down Mom Shaming and Totally Won the Internet

Let's be honest: the internet is a great way to debate issues and share opinions, and the topic of parenting (and its one million variations) is often one of the most heated discussions, whether it's on Facebook or in the comment section of a celeb's Instagram post. Mommy shaming is everywhere - your kid shouldn't eat this, go there, or be watching that TV show - because I'm a mom and I'd never make choice XYZ. The list goes on. Karen Johnson, the blogger behind 21st Century SAHM and mother of three, took to Facebook to put an end to mommy shaming once and for all with an incredible post that'll have parents cheering.

The blogger's take starts out almost like a confession:

Girlfriends, I got to get something off my chest. My house is never clean. Like ever. I have friends (with kids) whose houses are spotless. Are they better mothers than me? Nope. Am I a better mother than them? Nope.

I work out every day. I have mom friends who don't exercise. (I mean other than running around like crazy people after their kids). Does that make either of us a better mom? Nope."

Her point? Every single parent has their own way of doing things. They all have their own strengths and weaknesses, but that doesn't give any other mama the right to judge.

"I have friends who are super organic, chemical free, and dye free," she wrote. "My kids sometimes eat popsicles for breakfast. The cheap kind that are 50 for $2.00. Are either of us better than the other? Nope."

Johnson also tackles the debate between stay-at-home and working moms in a pretty direct way. "Are stay-at-home moms better than working moms? NO. Are working moms better than stay-at-home moms? NO."

Enough said.

She ends her post by saying that at the end of the day, we're all in this together. "So how about this? Can we all climb down off judgmental mountain for a second? And just support one another? And just say, Hey, motherhood is hard," she adds. "You're doing a good job. Raising kids can knock the wind out of a person. You got this. "

This Is How Shakira and Gerard Piqué Fell in Love

If you've listened to the lyrics of Shakira's single, "Me Enamoré," then you know a little bit about the beginning of her whirlwind romance with Spanish soccer player Gerard Piqué. The song recounts their first encounters, how Piqué was just a kid (Shakira is ten years older than him), but she fell in love with his beard and lips anyway, as they drank mojito after mojito. But there's much more to the story than that.

Almost everyone will recount, Shakira's hit"Waka Waka" was the official song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, but only real fans might remember Piqué makes an appearance on the music video for the song, as do other soccer players, including Lionel Messi. That's the day the two met.

In an interview with TV3, recounted by The Daily Mail, the FC Barcelona soccer player talked about how a simple question opened the door to their relationship: "She was already [in South Africa for the World Cup] because she sang in the opening ceremony, and I asked her what the weather was like." That was it! Shakira used that excuse to text him back every time there was a slight change in weather until Piqué suggested his team would have to make it to the final so they could see each other again. And, yes, Spain did win the World Cup that year - we're pretty sure it's because of Piqué's determination to see the Colombian singer.

Seven years later, the couple is still dating and has two sons, 4-year-old Milan and 2-year-old Sasha. Keep reading for a quick visual round-down of their relationship through the years.

10 Immigrant Women Who Changed the Course of US History

As the war on immigration rages all around, taking stock of our history may be our best hope for gaining the perspective necessary to move forward. After all, history is the story of everyday people and movements over time.

Consider America's original inhabitants, who crossed the Bering Strait tens of thousands of years ago, followed by the first wave of European settlers in 1500 and the violent, forced migration of African slaves starting in the 1600s. Later, in the 1890s, a new generation of people entered America, starting with Annie Moore, a young Irish woman who was the first of many immigrants processed at Ellis Island. Immigration is our shared history; moving to new lands that promise greater opportunity is human nature.

Here, we reflect on 10 immigrant women who helped shape America's history and culture. And once you've clicked through, take a moment to consider how different your life might be without Hedy Lamarr's inventions or Dr. Elizabeth Stern's research.

If you go to any activewear store, you'll notice a lot of the same stuff - skintight leggings, strappy sports bras (and bralettes), racerback tanks, and compression shorts. For some women, this is awesome: more ways to show off the body you've been working on!

But the truth of the matter is, not everyone wants to bare it all. Whether it's for religious or moral reasons, or you're just not comfortable in something so tight and revealing, it seems as though there are very few modest options in today's modern activewear lineup (some more hope, however, might be coming soon!).

To get some more perspective on this, I interviewed my fashionista friend Sabha, who happens to be Muslim, wears a hijab, and adheres to one of the most modest standards of dress. I typically see Sabha in a fabulous scarf (sparkles are common), ultrastylish boots, and, on special occasions, beautiful floor-length gowns with glittering long-sleeved tops underneath a strapless neckline. But I was dying to know - what does she wear to work out?

In addition to crafting sporty outfits with her own unique sense of style, she looks to Olympian and fellow hijabi, Ibtihaj Muhammad. Layering is key, and loose, lightweight silhouettes are a go-to.

She also reminded us that every woman who wears the hijab has her own guidelines for what she is comfortable with. "It's important not to judge or place standards onto any woman, because it can be a daily struggle for a lot of us, especially when you live somewhere that's never seen hijab before, or in a neighborhood that has preconceived notions of Muslims or Muslim women."

So if you've been struggling to find fashionable, modest athleisure or activewear, we've got some amazing suggestions for you, straight from a "hijabista."

19 Things You Might Not Have Thought to Bring to the Hospital (but Should)

If you're expecting a child anytime soon, chances are you've got your bag packed with the essentials: toothbrush, pillow, loose clothing, outfit for baby to wear home, etc. However, the list need not to stop there - giving birth to a child is one of the most monumental moments in our lives, so feel free to bring what you need to make yourself comfortable during your hospital stay (as much as that is possible, at least). To get you started, here are a few of some lesser-thought-of items you might also want to think about stashing in your hospital bag so that you're ready for when those exciting first signs of labor start to come.

Who Is Running For President in 2020?

Donald Trump hasn't even completed his first year in office, but presidential hopefuls from all parties are already lining up in public, in private, or in our dreams to run against him and take office in 2020. While very few political players have publicly spoken up about intentions to run, the signs that someone is running - serious fundraising, visiting battleground states, making political appearances, releasing a book, etc. - often make their ambitions fairly clear well before they're official.

So who might President Trump - if he is, in fact, the GOP's candidate - face in three and a half years? Here's a look at 17 people who seem to be laying the foundation for a presidential run in 2020, two who are already trumpeting their 2020 campaigns, and eight people who say they absolutely will not run.

15 Effective and Natural Ways 1 Editor Got Perfect Skin For Her Wedding

After I got married last April, the first question all of my engaged friends asked me was: what did you eat and how did you tone up for the wedding? I answered all of that in detail here and here. Next up: what was your skincare routine leading up to the big day?

As a beauty editor, I'll admit it was intensive. There were quite a few facials involved. That said, I focused on my being natural and looking like my best self. (Read: no Botox, fillers, or any other cosmetic procedures that would alter my looks. You don't want your partner to meet you at the end of the aisle and not recognize the person under the veil.) I ate clean for clear skin, worked hard to control my hormonal acne, and routinely applied products to enhance my blushing bridal glow.

Whether you're planning a wedding or just hoping to get your skin in check for a big event, here's a thorough guide on everything I did to get the best skin of my life!

4 Things You Should Know Before Visiting Cinque Terre in Italy

Considering a trip to Cinque Terre? After a recent visit full of blunders and wish-I-had-knowns, I put together some tips for planning a once-in-a-lifetime vacay to the Italian Riviera.

Contrary to popular assumption, Cinque Terre is not the name of a city, but is in fact a string of five scenic seaside villages along the Italian Riviera. A huge part of their appeal lies in the difficulty of their accessibility. Getting around in a foreign country can be tough when you don't speak the language, so planning ahead is key for a smooth and memorable trip. Here are the four things you should know before you go.

Which Stark Will Be the Next to Die?

Game of Thrones has always been hard on the Stark family. Between Ned's beheading in season one and poor Rickon's death by arrows in season six, the Starks surely wish they had never left Winterfell in the first place. After losing Ned, Robb, Catelyn, Talisa, Rickon, and technically Benjen (he's probably not coming back from his current semi-undead state), the family is down to just four members: Jon, Sansa, Arya, and Bran. At the moment, the remaining four have reclaimed Winterfell and the North, but they're also facing down a long Winter and a dash of infighting thanks to the combative Stark sisters. The big question is, will the Stark kids survive the coming war? It would be nice to assume they'll all make it to the end, but Game of Thrones is nothing less than ruthless when it comes to killing the characters we love.

With that reality in mind, it's best to be prepared for the worst, so we have ranked the remaining Starks from least to most likely to die before the series ends. Read on to discover which character is unlikely to live to see Spring.

How It Feels to Be the Only Arya Hater in a Sea of Game of Thrones Fans

As I write this, I'm mentally prepared for an angry mob outside my front door. After all, there's no fandom more passionate than the one surrounding Game of Thrones, and unpopular opinions don't often go over well. But here it goes: I think that Arya Stark is the most overrated character in the series. *dodges rotten tomatoes*

I don't actively hate Arya. I just don't necessarily like her.

Hear me out! I don't actively hate Arya. I just don't necessarily like her. And for most people, that's enough to label me crazy. I'm not trying to convert anybody else away from the Arya fandom . . . I think loving her character is perfectly valid, and there's no denying that she's fun to watch! I just personally don't believe that she's worthy of all the hype that she receives from the show's fans.

Perhaps it's because, from the start of the show, she's been used as a means to tear down her older sister, Sansa, one of the series's best characters. Many Game of Thrones fans - both book-readers and show-watchers, mind you - hold tomboyish Arya up as an example of somebody who's better than Sansa because she can fight with a sword and doesn't trifle with "girlie" things. I won't delve into the inherent sexism of this reasoning, but I'll suffice it to say that it's put a sour taste into my mouth about Arya from the start.

Don't get me wrong: Arya Stark is one badass motherf*cker. But is that enough to deserve the hype?

Don't get me wrong: Arya Stark is one badass motherf*cker. There is no arguing that she is an incredible fighter and that her faceless skills make her a valuable asset when it comes to exacting revenge. But is being badass enough to deserve all of this hype?

Arya has done very little by way of character development. Hell, her entire House of Black and White plotline proves that she is incapable of truly changing as a person. From season one, Arya has proven that violence is her go-to answer for nearly everything . . . and in season seven, when she lashes out at Sansa for not beheading bannermen who disagree with her family, she proves that she hasn't changed a bit. (Except, of course, to become more like Joffrey Baratheon, who executes their father for the exact same reason and also enjoys cruelly taunting people he has power over. Just saying.)

Of course, I am extremely lonely in this belief, and the response from GOT fans who disagree with me consistently proves it. Check out a day in my life as a lone wolf in the Arya-ambivalence camp. Spoiler alert: it ain't pretty.
