Relive the Moment Bette Midler Dusted Off Her Winifred Sanderson Costume From Hocus Pocus

It seems like celebrities constantly try and outdo each other on Halloween every year, but nobody (and we mean nobody, not even costume queen Heidi Klum) can top what Bette Midler did in 2016. The legendary actress showed up at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City to suck the lives out of little children. Well, not really. Bette, who is the founder of the New York Restoration Project, was on hand to attend the organization's Hulaween Bash. She dusted off her broom to go as her beloved Hocus Pocus character Winifred Sanderson, making it seem like no time has passed since a virgin lit the black flame candle back in 1993.

In addition to posing with fellow attendees Kathy Griffin and Marc Jacobs (yep, that's him in the bikini costume), Bette also linked up with her daughter, Sophie von Haselberg, and brought back some of Winifred's signature poses. And her costume was almost identical to the one she wore in the classic Halloween movie. Red hair? Check. Big teeth? Check. Being an overall badass? Check.

Even an Engineer Can't Solve This Second-Grade Math Problem

Parents often find themselves helping children with their homework, and once in a while even the adults struggle to solve a difficult problem. One parent, however, was so stumped by his child's homework that he took his frustration to the Internet. The father, Jeff Severt, was trying to help his second-grade son with a math equation that incorporates the new Common Core standards. The problem asks students to help "Jack," a fictional student who used a number line to find the answer to the subtraction problem 427-316. The students must write a letter to Jack explaining what he did right and what he did wrong. Severt, who has a bachelor's degree in engineering, says he spent two hours trying to help his son solve that one problem before giving up and writing an apologetic letter to Jack.

Critics of Common Core education say this problem is a prime example of the standards being "nonsensical and stupid." With this particular assignment, critics say it turned a simple assignment into "a complex endeavor with a series of unnecessary steps."

To see what creators of the Common Core standards have to say about the equations, read the full story on The Huffington Post.

5 Things We Know About John Green's Turtles All the Way Down, His First Book in 5 Years

John Green hasn't released a new novel since 2012's The Fault in Our Stars, but that's all about to change. The bestselling author - who also wrote YA novels Looking For Alaska and Paper Towns - has a new book in the works, titled Turtles All the Way Down. Green's return has been highly anticipated, and after announcing the news of his new book on Twitter and during his VidCon appearance in late June, a few choice details about it have started to trickle out (including the meaning behind that mysterious title and the release date!). Here's what we know so far.

The Plot

On his website, Green lays out the basics for the upcoming novel. It will follow 16-year-old Aza, who's struggling "to be a good daughter, a good friend, and a good student" all while also trying to solve one of the greatest mysteries of her time. With the help of "her Best and Most Fearless Friend Daisy," Aza sets out to uncover what happened to fugitive billionaire Russell Pickett (and possibly collect a $100,000 reward in the process). Aza and Daisy's journey to Russell Pickett's son, Davis, will be an emotional and illuminating one, as Aza also attempts to deal with her own mental illness.

The Real-Life Inspiration

During Green's Ask Me Anything session on Reddit in 2015, the 39-year-old author opened up about his experience with obsessive compulsive disorder and anxiety. "I've known that I have this mental illness for a long time, and I've had a lot of therapy and learned a lot of strategies for dealing with my illness," he wrote. "I know the benefits of exercise and meditation and medication and CBT strategies and etc."

In a statement from publisher Dutton Books, an imprint of Penguin Young Readers, Green revealed that Turtles All the Way Down was written as a way for him to work through his own struggles with mental illness. "This is my first attempt to write directly about the kind of mental illness that has affected my life since childhood, so while the story is fictional, it is also quite personal," he said.

The Title's Meaning

"Turtles all the way down" is actually a popular expression in cosmology that comes from an anecdote explaining "the unmoved mover" paradox. It posits that Earth is actually flat and is riding on the back of "a World Turtle," which itself is on the back of another turtle, and so on. The end of the anecdote concludes that it's "turtles all the way down." Apparently Aza will be a fan of The Big Bang Theory.

The Release Date

It's set to hit bookshelves on Oct. 10.

How Brienne of Tarth Is Still Fulfilling Her Vow to Catelyn Years Later

Listen up, peasants. All of us Game of Thrones fans are so focused on the biggest characters that we seem to have forgotten one crucial fact about the show. Some of the best and most loyal people in Westeros aren't even vying for the Iron Throne! Hold up while I shove Jon Snow and Cersei Lannister and Daenerys Targaryen to the side, because I'm here to talk about Brienne of Tarth. She is a warrior and woman of honor who never wavers from her personal loyalties. Over the course of the past seven seasons, she's proven herself to be one of the truest heroes on the show. And even after all this time, she's still honoring a vow she makes all the way back in season two.

Brienne's Humble Beginnings

As the last living member of House Tarth, Brienne carries with her an important legacy. Rather than marry into a fantastic union (and alliance) with another house, though, she decides to pledge her sword to Renly Baratheon. At one point, Brienne confesses she's always loved Renly, despite his exclusive attraction to men. They first met long before the events of the show, when Brienne's father attempted to marry her off. But all of her suitors saw her as a joke, which thoroughly shattered her confidence. It was Renly who swept her into a dance and told her not to acknowledge the trolls.

Her Sworn Allegiance to Catelyn Stark

Brienne and Catelyn meet when the latter comes to negotiate an alliance between Renly and Robb Stark. Together, they witness the tragic murder of Renly at the hands of Stannis Baratheon and Melisandre's shadow demon. Catelyn says Brienne will be blamed for the death, and they both flee.

After some time, Brienne swears her sword to Catelyn but makes it clear that her ultimate mission is to kill Stannis and avenge Renly. When Catelyn agrees to not stand in her way, Brienne takes her oath. "I am yours, my lady," she says. "I will shield your back and give my life for yours, if it comes to that. I swear it by the old gods and the new." We all know how this ends: Catelyn sends Brienne to escort Jaime to King's Landing in exchange for Sansa and Arya's safe return to Winterfell. Catelyn then dies in the Red Wedding.

Finding Sansa and Stannis

A lot of complicated things go down once Brienne gets to King's Landing. Basically, though, everything ends in Sansa's escape. Jaime sends Brienne after her, with a sword that of course Brienne decides to call The Oathkeeper, but Brienne's personal mission is clear. Since she pledged her sword to Catelyn, and since that initial mission from Catelyn was to return the Stark daughters to Winterfell, she stays true to her oath. Brienne pursues Sansa, but eventually gets side-tracked in her attempts to find Arya.

As you might remember, Arya is traveling with the Hound at this point. She rejects Brienne's help, and since the Hound seems intent on protecting Arya, he and Brienne engage in a pretty epic sword fight that devolves into a fist fight. Brienne wins, but since she's distracted, Arya manages to run away. Brienne continues on the road and accidentally stumbles upon Sansa in an inn; she also rejects Brienne's help, thanks to the counsel of Littlefinger.

Sansa continues and makes it to Winterfell, which is currently being held by the Boltons. Brienne stays true to her word. She sends a message to Sansa, instructing her to light a candle in her window if she's in trouble. Brienne watches until she gets word of Stannis's whereabouts. She swiftly avenges Renly's death, then returns to Sansa.

Loyal to the End

We all pretty much know the story from here, right? Brienne finds Sansa and again swears herself to a Stark. This time, Sansa accepts. Brienne brings her safely home. Then she hangs around, keeping her word to protect Sansa. Brienne even agrees to train Arya when she finally returns home to Winterfell in season seven.

And this is all because Brienne swears her sword to Catelyn in season two. Every single decision Brienne makes is a result of her honor, and what she believes is her duty. She even avenged Renly's death after swearing her loyalty to House Stark! And now, she's still on the side of the Starks, through and through.

See the Workout Leggings That Fitness Editors Are Obsessed With

There are definite perks to being a fitness editor, one being all the gear I get to test out. Yet somehow finding the perfect pair of workout leggings eluded me . . . until the Adidas Warp Knit Tights ($100) landed on my desk.

At first glance, I didn't have high hopes. Prior to this, Adidas was not in my top three brands for gear. The cuts never fit me right, and there was always just a little something wrong with how things performed. To make matters worse, the Warp Knit Tights looked really odd out of the packaging. The material was unlike anything I had previously encountered, and while the tag read "medium," there didn't seem to be enough material to cover a single thigh. But I tried them on anyway. Holy sh*t was I wrong. These leggings were magical.

Despite how tiny they looked in the package, they fit perfectly. They hug and give in all the right places . . . sort of like a second skin, but better. While I am not going as far as to say that I feel naked when wearing them, there's an invisibility to them. They don't restrict my movement, and I never have to tug or readjust them like I do with other leggings. And forgive my vanity for a moment, but they make my butt look incredible. I'm not alone in this. I've seen at least 50 women in these leggings, and I can safely say that they flatter every single body type I have seen them on. It's hard to explain, but it's as if the cut molds to your butt, your legs, and your waist to create the perfect tights - made just for you.

But a good pair of tights needs to do more than make you feel good, and these also hold up when it comes to performance. The waist is high enough to keep me comfortable and pulled in during workouts like yoga and indoor cycling but low enough not to dig into my waist while running or dancing. The material is super soft and the perfect amount of thickness. They're light enough that I never feel gross and covered in sweat, yet thick enough for me to feel confident that my leggings aren't see-through whenever I bend over. They also move with me, whether I am doing jump squats or Downward Dog.

Since that first day, I've had countless conversations with other women about our love for these tights. Every fitness editor I know is obsessed with how they make her feel when wearing them. We all seem to save them for our favorite workouts, washing them quickly after every use despite having a pile of other leggings to choose from. One editor shared with me that they have this ability to make her feel stronger because of the way they hold her body. And a friend once told me that she could eat an entire burrito while wearing her Warp Knits and somehow feel like she lost five pounds. If that's not a ringing endorsement, I don't know what is.

A Comparative Tasting of the Country's Best Bourbons

During a previous Food & Wine Classic in Aspen, CO, I spotted a bourbon bar filled with many fine bourbons of which I had never had the opportunity to try. Without hesitation, I plopped myself down and made friends with the bartender. The conditions were a little rough: the sun was in my eyes; I drank out of a wine glass; I kept falling out of my bar stool trying to capture the perfect angle of each bottle with my cumbersome camera. Ultimately, though, the liquid gold was worth it. Keep reading to see tasting notes, favorites, and some cocktail suggestions.

This Is My New Favorite Ab Exercise, and You Should Try It Right Now

I love an exercise that works multiple body parts simultaneously. I love an exercise that makes me feel strong. And I love an exercise that requires no equipment - I like to be spontaneous sometimes. The knee driver checks all those boxes, making it my new favorite exercise. It makes my shoulders and my abs burn in the best way possible. Plus, this bodyweight exercise gets the heart rate up . . . a definite plus in my book. I suggest adding this move to your fitness routine. It's good after a run or a ride, and it fits into almost any workout.

Knee Driver

  • Begin in an elbow-plank position, with the abs pulled toward the spine.
  • Exhale and draw the left knee into the chest; your pelvis will move toward the ceiling. Then step the foot back to the elbow-plank position. This counts as one rep.
  • Now draw the right knee into the chest, and then step it back to the elbow-plank position.
  • Continue alternating sides and complete as many reps as you can in a minute to complete a set. Do two to three sets.

George W. Bush Says Bill Clinton Is a "Brother With a Different Mother"

Bill Clinton may have beaten George W. Bush's father in the 1992 presidential election, but the two former presidents seemingly have a unique and fascinating friendship. During a forum at the George W. Bush Presidential Library on Thursday, July 13, the two discussed their bond - and made several not-so-veiled references to our current president - when they discussed importance of unity and "humility" in the Oval Office.

As for Clinton's close friendship with Bush's father, Bush said, "It starts with Bill Clinton being a person who refused to lord his victory over Dad. He was humble in victory, which is very important in dealing with other people. Dad was willing to rise above the political contest. It starts with the individual's character and both men, in my judgment, displayed strong character."

"Why do I have a friendship with him?" Bush asked of his bipartisan bromance with Clinton. "Well, he's called a brother with a different mother."

In the discussion, the two did not mention President Donald Trump by name once, but they did not hold back from throwing a little shade.

"If you want to be president, realize it's about the people, not about you," Clinton said. "You want to be able to say 'things were better off when I quit, kids had a better future, things were coming together.' A lot of these people who are real arrogant in office, they forget . . . . You don't want to say, 'God, look at all the people I beat.'"

The men also referenced the advice former presidents pass down to their successors. George Bush Sr. gave Clinton advice about being the commander in chief, and Clinton did the same when George W. Bush was elected president after his two terms. Bush did the same for Barack Obama, which also explains the warm relationship Bush and Michelle Obama share.

The two reflected on the power of the presidency in their conversation. "The decisions you make have a monumental effect on people," Bush said. "Presidency is often defined by the unexpected. It makes the job interesting."

Clinton added, "If you don't deal with the incoming fire, it will undermine your ability to do anything else. If all you deal with is incoming fire, you can't keep the promises you made when you were running."

He also said that "the best thing that can happen to you when you are in politics is to be consistently underestimated." Bush chimed in jokingly, "I was pretty good at that."

30 of the Hottest Songs From the Early '00s

Back in the early 2000s, we found out about the latest music from MTV's TRL, posted whatever song we were listening to on our AIM away message, and would spend hours trying to re-create the latest looks from Britney Spears's or Christina Aguilera's music videos. 10 Things You Should See and Do in Venice, Italy

Venice is a historic city full of color, exquisite food, and life. However, this historical, Italian location needs to be seen by all before it's too late. The floating city is rapidly becoming a place that may not be as easy to visit in the future. Every year, the flooding consumes parts of the vibrant lagoon town. And while this has been the norm since its inception, climate change and rising water levels will eventually overtake Venice to the point that will make it nearly impossible to sustain visitors alongside its residents. If that's not enough to make you buy a flight as soon as possible, the other reasons include the fact that it is home to some of the most colorful buildings, full of fascinating history, surrounded by gondola-filled canals, and of course all the pasta and gelato you would ever want to eat. These are some photos to inspire you to take a journey to this Italian hot spot.

Omar Epps Was Unfairly Sexy in the '90s, and You Better Believe He's Still Got It

Where does one even begin when talking about Omar Epps? The actor, most notable for his roles in movies like Love & Basketball and TV shows like House, was a major heartthrob back in the day, and his sexiness is still very much a thing. The 44-year-old was everywhere in the '90s (think Juice, Scream 2, Higher Learning, and so on), and our childhood crush has thankfully carried over into adulthood. While nothing will ever quite compare to his role as Quincy McCall in Love & Basketball (seriously, that movie . . . don't get me started because I will never stop), Omar has continued to act (and steal our hearts) over the years. Keep reading for some of his sexiest moments, but be warned: your love will probably plunge into new, unknown dEPPS (OK, bye).

How a Heartfelt, Pro-LGBTQ Facebook Post Led to This Professor's Firing

To commemorate LGBTQ Pride Month, BYU-Idaho adjunct professor Ruthie Robertson wrote an uplifting, private post on her personal Facebook page. Robertson is a 22-year-old Mormon who graduated from the same university; BYU-Idaho (along with all the other BYU campuses) is owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. In June, Robertson saw Pride Month as an opportunity to explore the conflict between her religion and her support for the LGBTQ community. As she notes, the church of the Latter-Day Saints has a pointed history of opposing the rights of LGBTQ individuals - a stance Robertson takes issue with.

The Salt Lake Tribune obtained Robertson's Facebook post in full, in which she criticizes some pretty common rhetoric about using the Bible to guide values concerning LGBTQ individuals. She calls out the church, saying: "For an organization that places so much importance on the family unit, this policy sure seems to be attacking a form of that unit." According to the Old Testament, she notes, being gay is a sin. But the Old Testament also forbids wearing clothes of mixed textiles. The Old Testament says a woman is "impure" while she is menstruating and must be completely avoided. Robertson wonders why the church follows some of these biblical guidelines and avoids others.

Robertson finishes the post with her "official statement" on the issue. "I believe heterosexuality and homosexuality are both natural and neither is sinful . . . I will always and forever stand up for the equality of the LGBT community. Sexuality and gender are not binary, they are on a spectrum and that's how we were made. Stand up for humanity, love people because of who they are, not despite who they are."

"Sexuality and gender are not binary, they are on a spectrum and that's how we were made. Stand up for humanity, love people because of who they are, not despite who they are."

Robertson says she was asked to sit down with the administrators at BYU-Idaho the day after she posted the message. The conversation reportedly started "pretty positive," with the officials attempting to learn more about Robertson's passion for the LGBTQ community. It eventually took a negative turn; the officials urged her to reconsider her values, to pray on the issue for a few days, and to take down the post. They seemed to imply that there was an ultimatum: Robertson would delete the post if she wanted to keep her job.

After the meeting, Robertson did make some edits to the post, but she ultimately refused to take it down. A week later, she was fired. Robertson told The Salt Lake City Tribune she "was upset they would fire me over something like this. I was kind of indignant. I wasn't going to back down."

This isn't the only controversy over its treatment of LGBTQ individuals and allies that the Mormon church has faced in recent months. In June, an equally disheartening story surfaced about a 12-year-old Mormon girl named Savannah who attempted to come out to her congregation during a testimony meeting. The church switched off her microphone before she could finish, and her church leader told her to return to her seat.

For what it's worth, the LDS Church has slightly expanded its official view of the LGBTQ community. Decades ago, the church referred to homosexuality as an "evil lifestyle choice," but last year, it declared that there is a place for gay people in its church. Despite this public messaging, stories like Savannah's and Robertson's seem to prove that behind closed doors, there is still deep-seated opposition to really accepting the LGBTQ community in a meaningful way.

In honor of LGBT Pride Month, I thought I would reveal some things in the name of authenticity.

I'm currently a member of the LDS Church. This organization has openly and forcefully opposed same-sex relationships and legalized same-sex marriage. They pushed members in California to fight against Prop 8, and had a policy claiming that same-sex relationships were a sin and discouraged individuals from participating in them. In the past, the Church was a facilitator for adoptions. They ended this part of the organization to avoid having to deal with adoption requests from same-sex couples. In November 2015, they took their stance further by labeling same-sex couples in the Church as apostates, meaning those found in these relationships would have a disciplinary hearing to determine their membership status; they can either end their engagements in this sinful life, or be excommunicated. The policy also prevents their children from joining the Church until they are 18, with the condition that they disavow their parents life style. For an organization that places so much importance on the family unit, this policy sure seems to be attacking a form of that unit.

Most Christian faiths label homosexuality as a sin based on archaic writings. A few hateful verses in the Old Testament have led to hundreds of years of prejudice, hatred, violence, and pain. If we're going to follow the Old Testament, and use it to justify a hateful stance, there are several other things we need to start condemning and punishing. Leviticus 19:19 tells us we can't wear clothing of two kinds of material… so, basically every clothing item ever has to be burned. The next time you see someone wearing clothes(which is always… so, you're welcome for the opportunity to show your spiritual superiority), check the tag to see the materials it's made from. If it's more than one, tell them they should desire to walk around naked rather than wear clothing made of more than one material! Women, in Leviticus 15, we learn that God purposely made us unclean. When we menstruate, we are unclean for those 7 days. Oh, and anyone or anything that touches us during that time is unclean as well. You aren't allowed to go to church at that time because you'll corrupt everything there with your blood flow. Oh, and you know how God also gave us the ability to grow a human inside of us? Well, after a woman has a child, she has a period of impurity and cannot be touched. If it's a boy, she's unclean for 40 days. If it's a girl, she's unclean for 80 days. As a female, you also are not allowed to read from the scriptures (wait… how am I supposed to know about my impurity rituals then?! I need to know how to make myself pure after my period!..too bad). You also cannot preach in a church (can I use this excuse next time I'm asked to speak in church?) None of this is archaic, sexist, or totally illogical at all though, right? God commanded these things, so we need to make sure we make these into policies as well!

What I'm trying convey is that we like to pick and choose from the scriptures, and if we choose to use the Old Testament as a defense for condemning homosexuality… there's a whole lot more we need to be condemning as well. The Book of Mormon is supposed to be the keystone of the Church, right? It never once mentions homosexuality. What is does mention is that God disposed the practice of polygamy, and the Nephites are brought to repentance for practicing it…. yet, Joseph Smith said God commanded him to practice it. We can't keep picking and choosing what kind of God we worship, and we can't keep picking and choosing which commandments of his are to be enforced or not.

This is my official announcement and declaration that I believe heterosexuality and homosexuality are both natural and neither is sinful. I will never support the phrase "love the sinner, hate the sin" because that "sin" is part of who that person is. Homosexuality and transgenderism are not sins; if God made us, and those are part of who we are.. then God created that as well. I realize that my views counter the current day policies of the LDS Church, but I hope that over time the Church will come to see the harm these policies have. Church History shows that the Church has rescinded policies before that weren't doctrinal, and that weren't inspired by the Lord. I hope that this will some day apply to the stance on the LGBT community. I will always and forever stand up for the equality of the LGBT community. Sexuality and gender are not binary, they are on a spectrum and that's how we were made.

Stand up for humanity, love people because of who they are... not despite who they are. Trump can break the tradition of June being LGBT pride month, but I'm still going to celebrate it.. this month and every month to follow. #LGBTPrideMonth

You'll Be Obsessed With Sephora's New Reddit-Esque Beauty Insider Community

Let's take a moment to pour one out for that friend we go to for all of our beauty questions. Or maybe, you are that friend. Since you can never have too many makeup-junkie pals, Sephora has launched a new online community full of them. It's called the Beauty Insider Community, and you're probably going to get addicted to it. This online forum aims to be your new go-to for all your burning hair and makeup questions. And yes, it wouldn't be a hot new Sephora announcement without some pretty awesome perks.

If you've ever lost hours on Reddit's Beauty Addiction page (totally busted), Sephora's new launch will be second nature to you. The platform features several sections, starting with the home page, where you can access your profile, peruse groups, and join a conversation. There are 42 themed groups, from the basic "Everything Eyes" to the tips-based "Acne-Prone Skin" and the fabulous "Glitter Enthusiasts."

The sky's the limit in terms of finding inspiration, asking questions, and connecting with other people

Along with using those pages to meet and discuss things with like-minded beauty junkies, there's also a "Gallery" feature where you can post pictures to show off your recent Sephora haul or post an on-point makeup selfie to your adoring fans.

But don't think this is just another online forum. Bindu Shah, VP of digital marketing at Sephora, tells POPSUGAR that the Beauty Insider Community is an "evolved ecosystem" that "Enables [shoppers] to easily connect with people who share [their] beauty interests so they feel supported throughout their beauty journey." It's also a great place to discover new products for future purchases, which, of course, will lead to raking in more Insider points. "The sky's the limit in terms of finding inspiration, asking questions, and connecting with other people," Shah says.

We're particularly excited about the "Trending Now" group, which teases sneak peeks of new products. While we might go broke keeping up with all the news and exclusives, at least it will all be for a cause we know and love (hoarding makeup!). And, after you score that new highlighter or eye-shadow palette, you'll want to tell the Beauty Insider Community all about it. Shah's pro tip is that, "It's fun to visit Community after you've been in store so you can share reviews on products you've tried."

All you need to participate is an opinion and a Beauty Insider membership. The site is up now to play around with, but if you create your profile between Sept. 1 and 30, you'll actually receive 50 BI points just for showing up. Participation medal!

You'll be happy to know that, although the Beauty Insider Community just officially launched today, there is already a conversation dedicated to one of life's most important questions:

A Simple Explanation of the Arguments For - and Against - Single-Payer Health Care

If it isn't clear by now, health care in the US is a deeply complex issue. Though several millions of people have benefited from Obamacare, not everyone is happy with the law. That's part of the reason a single-payer healthcare system continues to grow increasingly popular, primarily among liberals, as a potential viable option. However, like any program, it has its pros and cons that could influence how you feel about such a system.

A single-payer program means that a single public agency, like the government, handles all aspects of healthcare financing. Private hospitals and doctors, however, still handle providing care to people.

The Pros of Single-Payer Health Care

  • Everyone gets insurance: In this system, everyone is eligible for insurance - no matter your employment status or age.
  • Preexisting conditions are no longer a worry: Since everyone gets insurance, you can't be denied coverage based on any preexisting condition.
  • One insurance plan for all: A big complaint about Obamacare is how confusing it can be to pick and choose the right insurance plan. With single-payer, everyone's on the same plan.
  • It'll save everyone money: According to the Physicians For a National Health Program, "95 percent of all households would save money" if America moved to a single-payer system. An article in the Annals of Internal Medicine predicted single-payer would save about $500 billion per year in services such as billing, administration, and "insurance overhead" and save $113 billion on prescription drugs.

The Cons of Single-Payer Health Care

  • It could mean a longer wait time for doctors: Since everyone can see a doctor and get more specialized care, wait times could increase. As the Physicians For a National Health Program explain, though this is a common phenomenon in Canada, it could be solved simply by spending more on health care. However, a 2013 survey from the Commonwealth Fund showed that countries that have single-payer, like the United Kingdom, can get same-day or next-day appointments.
  • A lower quality of care: A common debate around the single-payer healthcare system is that a single doctor is now responsible for seeing a large amount of patients. Because of this, the doctor might work faster and possibly make more errors.
  • A lack of innovation: Another common argument is that, since insurance will be owned publicly, drug companies will have less of an incentive to create new drugs.

Senator Bernie Sanders, who made single-payer health care a central theme of his presidential campaign, told a group of constituents that he'll introduce his "Medicare For All" plan in September. It most likely won't pass, but it's worth knowing what single-payer could mean for the country as it gains momentum.

Shirtless Leonardo DiCaprio Serves Poolside Glamour With Kate Winslet in St.-Tropez

Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet reunited for a charity gala in St.-Tropez, France, last month, and during their downtime, the BFFs lounged by the pool at Leo's villa with a few other friends, including Tobey Maguire, Kevin Connolly, and Lukas Haas. Leo went shirtless in a pair of swim trunks for the pool day, while Kate covered up her neon bikini with a sheer dress. The Oscar winners were spotted chatting it up and sharing a hug, and Leo also made sure to strike a few poses between hitting the vape pen and checking his cell phone for text messages from models (we assume). It was during this same getaway that Leo debuted a Project Runway-worthy beach towel design, which we couldn't be more thankful for.

Speaking of models, Leo has reportedly been busy romancing yet another stunner since his pool day with Kate. This week, Page Six reported that Leo is getting cozy with 23-year-old German model Lorena Rae; the pair was seen having a lunch and museum date in NYC and looked "like an item." With only a few weeks until Labor Day, it certainly seems like Leo is ending Summer with a bang (we assume).

15 Great Romantic Comedies to Stream on Netflix

It's no secret that the last few years have been a bleak time for romantic comedies, though 2017 is bringing some new hopefuls to the genre. I don't know what happened to girls just standing in front of boys asking them to love them or why Tom Hanks isn't shutting down Meg Ryan's shop anymore; I just know that this genre isn't as good as it used to be. To help matters, I've picked out a handful of great romantic comedies that you can stream on Netflix - movies that are either old favorites, gems you may have never seen, or semirecent movies you missed for whatever reason. Get ready to fall in love again!

An Algorithm Can Tell If You're Depressed or Not Just by Looking at Your Instagram Photos

The filter you choose for an Instagram photo might be saying a whole lot more about your mental health than you know. In a new study, a team of researchers created an algorithm that can sift through your photos on the app and predict whether or not you're depressed. The algorithm was correct 70 percent of time and took into account a variety of factors in order to come up with the diagnosis.

The algorithm uses machine learning to learn what makes up a "depressed photo" based on owners of Instagram accounts who had been diagnosed with depression. Though the sample size was small - the study only looked at 166 Instagram users - the algorithm was then able to detect potentially depressed individuals within a set of new users. Specifically the algorithm learned that depressed people usually had photos that had a darker tone, used the Inkwell filter, had fewer individuals in the photos themselves, and had fewer "likes." Happier people, on the other hand, loved using the Valenica filter and included more people in their photos.

While this type of research may seem superfluous, it's important to note that the 70 percent success rate of the algorithm's diagnosis dramatically outperforms the 42 percent success rate that regular doctors have. However, the researchers do express that the study shouldn't be used broadly on anyone's Instagram account. "No guarantee that this would translate to just the average Instagram user," Chris Danforth, the author of the study, said to BuzzFeed. Instead, the researchers suggest that the algorithm could be used as a "blueprint" to screen for depression "in an increasingly digitalized society."
For now, if you do see someone post a troubling post on Instagram, you can anonymously report them. Then, the next time this person opens up an app, they'll see different ways they can seek help, like calling a hotline.

The Most Dangerous Sunscreens For Kids (and They're Probably Hiding in Your Beach Bag)

Along with wearing sunglasses and hats, sunscreen should always be a part of your family's Summer routine - but is the sunscreen in your beach bag right now actually safe? The EWG released its annual list of the sunscreens with the worst ratings for 2017 to alert parents.

The sunscreens that made the list have potentially harmful chemicals - oxybenzone (which can disrupt the hormone system) and retinyl palmitate (which may actually trigger skin damage on sun-exposed skin) - and high SPFs that don't actually do any more to protect your child than an SPF 30-50. Additionally, some formulas come in a spray that won't completely cover your little one's skin and could be inhaled into their lungs.

If any of these are in your arsenal, toss them and opt for one of these safe sunscreens instead.
