7 Options For Finding Cheap (or Free!) Fitness Classes
As boutique studios and class-sharing programs hike up prices, budget-minded fitness enthusiasts are feeling the squeeze. The popular cycling and barre studio Flywheel was the latest to raise prices of some classes, but it was certainly not alone. In 2016, ClassPass raised its prices, as did SoulCycle.
Don't stress, though - there are plenty of ways to work out without the high price tag. Some studios even offer classes for free - you just have to know where to look.
Karma Programs
One of the most rewarding ways to take fitness classes for free is through a karma program. A fitness studio - usually a yoga one - offers up free classes in exchange for working a shift. The work can involve menial tasks like cleaning bathrooms or sweeping the studios, but it's a great way to get to know the staff at a studio you really love. Better yet, many of these programs offer the chance for workers to become certified as an instructor at the studio at a reduced price.
These are sometimes hard to find, so keep an eye out on your studio's website or its social media pages. Don't be afraid to ask instructors if this is something offered - you'll often be surprised at their response.
The verdict: If you love a studio, a karma program is your best option for free classes.
"First Time Free" Offers
Most studios offer a discount or free class for first-time attendees. While these aren't always advertised, you can often find them by poking around on the studio's website. Some offer the first class completely free; others offer a discount on the first few classes.
The verdict: Whether the class is free or discounted, it's a good deal. Definitely take advantage of the prices.
ClassPass and FitReserve
On their faces, ClassPass and FitReserve aren't the cheapest options when it comes to fitness classes. They're a great way to try out different studios in your city; for a set price, you receive a certain number of classes at studios that list their classes through the site. There is, though, a way around the high prices. Both services offer discounts for first-time users - FitReserve is currently offering 20 percent off, while ClassPass has a first-month offer available for $19. These discounts change throughout the year, so be sure to watch for good ones.
It's important that if you can't swing the high price point of these services sans discount, you remember to cancel your membership before autorenew sets in.
The verdict: ClassPass and FitReserve are great options for the first month. After that, cancel your membership.
Zenrez
Zenrez is a program similar to ClassPass and FitReserve, but you don't have to pay for a membership. Sign up on the website, and book classes at your favorite studios through it. When you do, you'll be offered a discount at whichever studio you choose, but only as long as you take last-minute classes.
The verdict: Zenrez is perfect for someone who doesn't love to plan but loves to save money.
Groupon
Groupon is an oft-forgotten juggernaut in the fitness world. The discount site provides deals on everything from yoga classes to kickboxing at a discounted price. Not every studio has offers on Groupon, and they are often for first-time studio users, so be careful when you book your first class at a studio.
The verdict: With a little research, a Groupon can pay off big time.
Local Recreation Department
OK, stick with us here. We know your local recreation department is perhaps the last place you'd look for a chic and fun fitness experience. But many local rec departments offer classes at a steep discount. In New York, for example, the recreation department offers classes, both indoor and outdoor, completely free.
The verdict: It may be crusty, but your local rec center can help you save some serious cash.
Local Bloggers
Something to look out for when seeking cheap fitness are local sites that aggregate cheap or free fitness classes in your city. Fit For Free NYC and The Fit Crasher in DC are prime examples of great resources that do your work for you.
The verdict: Definitely follow local bloggers who aggregate fitness classes in your area. Let them do the heavy lifting!
18 Secrets From Flight Attendants That Will Change the Way You Fly
Does a cheaper flight mean a less safe flight? What happens if your plane is struck by lightning? And why do we have to put our seats in the upright position for landing? The keepers of the answers to your burning questions are the very same people serving you cocktails and snack packs. Flight attendants see it all, and they know the ins and outs of air travel.
We spoke to two flight attendants who both work for one of the top three major US airlines - they answered our questions on the condition of anonymity. From the things that annoy flight attendants to tips and tricks they practice when they're flying, these expert travelers have secrets that will calm your fears and may make you think twice before you complain extra loud about your dinner not being just right on your next flight. Read on for the juicy details only flight attendants can provide.
22 Airport Hacks to Remember Before Your Next Flight
12 Tips For Sleeping on a Plane Like a Pro
1. What are some things that annoy flight attendants?
"Discourteous passengers, touching the flight attendant to get their attention as we walk by, whispering (the airplane can be very loud and I'm not the best at reading lips!), complaining about weather and/or aircraft maintenance delays (we don't have any control over this, and we are just as inconvenienced as you are)."
2. Why do tray tables and seats have to be in upright position for takeoffs and landings?
"Especially the tray tables! During an evacuation, where every second matters to get away from the plane, if a tray table is down it will slow down the egress of the two passengers on the middle and window seat. If the aircraft were on fire, wouldn't you want a clear escape path to the exit? Same goes for the seat back. Any added obstacle will slow egress in an emergency."
3. What is something flight attendants wish passengers knew/understood?
"We don't choose what we serve - we simply show up and serve what's there, and if it's not there, you're not getting any. We also have no control when it comes to delays due to weather and/or aircraft maintenance. So please, be courteous to us in the event those may occur. As Captain Sullenberger said, 'Better a delay than a disaster!'"
4. What are some common myths that people believe about flying that aren't true?
"That the brace position is meant to kill you faster - I find this to be the most ridiculous myth; in a crash landing you wouldn't want to be tucked away and brace your body for impact by compacting it and covering your vitals such as neck, face, stomach, etc. Even flight attendants have a brace position, and we do it every takeoff and landing!"
5. Does a cheaper ticket/airline mean a less safe flight?
"Absolutely not! A lot of variables make up the complex formula for ticket price such as time of booking, cabin, seat, frequent flyer status and miles, airplane configuration, in-flight service on that particular flight, optional items like baggage allowance or seat assignment. Basically, all aircraft are subject to FAA regulations, and we wouldn't be in the business if safety wasn't our number one priority. Airlines are able to customize their product to their brand, but safety remains the number one focus."
6. What sort of training does a flight attendant go through?
"Training is on average five and a half weeks, most of which is unpaid. In training we learn and are tested to proficiency on certain items such as aircraft general, first aid, security, and evacuation drills. Only about four days is spent on service!"
7. What are flight attendants trained in, in terms of safety emergency situations, both plane and people-related?
"We have a lot of formal training in safety and emergency situations. Four of our five weeks of intense, six-days-a-week training was spent on safety and emergency situations. Most of our people-related situations are learned on the job. We have been hired/selected by other professional flight attendants for our ability to make good decisions and to be able to read situations and people with good judgment. So many of us are well equipped to handle these situations that come up, but sometimes it does take a second opinion of another crew member."
8. What happens when one engine goes out?
"All aircraft are certified to fly with one engine operation for a safe landing. The aircraft that fly over water are ETOPS certified. Airplanes are aerodynamic, meaning they are designed so air can easily flow around the airplane to decrease drag so they can glide in descent for an extended time with one working engine. One example is Air Canada Flight 143, which ran out of fuel at 41,000 feet and managed to glide and land without a loss of life. And then there's the all too famous US Airways flight 1549 - so in short, engine failure isn't like a flat tire, just a rare inconvenience."
9. Can turbulence make a plane crash?
"No, but it can be unsettling and even throw people about. Due to modern technology, turbulence can now easily be predicted than ever before. In general the pilots know what's ahead of their aircraft at all times, but severe turbulence does happen unexpectedly from time to time. Most turbulence-related injuries are actually to flight attendants, as we are more vulnerable being out of our jumpsuits most of the flight. The main danger to passengers is not being seated with their seat belts fastened when this unlikely event occurs or unsecured items becoming instant projectiles."
10. What happens if the landing gear fails?
"Simple, we land without it! This event is actually called a 'belly landing,' where the plane lands on the belly without the gear lowered. This event has actually happened where LOT Polish Airlines Flight 16 landed with out the gear lowered with emergency vehicles and personnel on the ground standing by. The plane landed without incident on its belly, and the flight attendants warranted an evacuation - all 231 people were evacuated via the escape slides without injury or loss of life."
11. Is it safe to fly during a thunderstorm? What happens when a plane is hit by lightning?
"Planes are designed to be hit by lightning both in the air and on the ground! Thanks to the engineers who design the plane. The skin of the aircraft acts as a conductor to keep lightning from entering the internal parts of the aircraft, such as the cabin or anything such as flight controls that may affect the well-being of the airplane, and the lightning is redirected out through the wings and tail. There may be damage to the plane (rare), but it will make a safe landing. Thanks to the engineers and plane manufacturers, an airliner has not crashed from lightning in over 45 years. From the passenger perspective, there may be a loud bang or white glow, but not to worry, the internal parts if the plane are protected."
12. What are some reasons that a flight is completely canceled rather than just delayed?
"A lot of reasons can a play a factor with this, mostly crew legality comes into play especially out of our hub cities where we don't have ready reserve flight attendants who can easily take over the flight. FAA mandates how many hours a crew can work a day in any given duty period - pilots are usually 12 hours and flight attendants are usually 16 hours. A long day's friend is fatigue and fatigue is usually where mistakes can be made. Planes have been crippled and met demise under fatigue conditions of the crew. Sometimes the delay can be so long that they cancel the flight for the day and run an extra segment the following day.
Although cancellations are becoming more and more rare, with airlines running about 90 percent completion rate of flights. The most common cancellation is weather, where planes are late or never take off to come in or they just simply can't operate a safe operation under the severe weather conditions and it makes sense to cancel the flight vs. stringing the passengers along to departure that will never happen."
13. What are some tips you have for packing light?
"My suggestion is to wear your larger coat and bulkiest shoes on the flight if possible. Also pack things that combine well together. One skirt that goes with four different shirts or a dress that can be worn for day and evening. It cuts down on the number of items you'll have to pack. Things like underwear, socks, tank tops, etc. can be shoved into boots if those are something you choose to pack instead of wear on the plane."
14. What are the essentials you HAVE to have when you fly?
"(Noise-canceling) headphones, sweater/jacket/wrap or scarf, Kiehl's in-flight spray, and empty water bottle to fill up after security checkpoint."
15. What other travel tips/tricks/secrets do you have?
"Do not depend heavily on the airline/flight attendants. Things happen, we make mistakes, and sometimes we aren't having the best day, but if you can make the flight attendants smile or laugh, you'll never go thirsty. Always anticipate delays and your own needs such as temperature - bring a sweater, dietary needs - we aren't a 7-Eleven, bring your gluten-free stuff from home, medication - keep it with you at all times, along with your wallet, keys, and passport!"
16. Any tips for beating jet lag?
"Drink a lot of water! My best advice is to get yourself onto the time of the place you're going as best you can. If I get in and it's 2 p.m. and I really want to nap, I force myself to stay awake until it's 'bedtime.' It can be really challenging, but that's why coffee exists."
17. What's the coolest place you've ever been?
"I have to say that being paid to work a flight to Maui and then getting to lay on the beach all the next day and then working the flight back is not such a rough life. As long as I have enough time, I try to get out and find some things to explore in every city. I also love Boston and NYC (places I'd never been until I got this job)."
18. What made you get into the airline business? What do those in the business love about it?
"I have wanted to be a flight attendant for a long time. I have always been drawn to the idea of traveling all over for work, the flexible scheduling, and the fact that I get to work with a variety of people. Why people stay in the airline business is due to the flexible hours and the travel benefits. And with many of the larger carriers, once you've worked with them for 15 years, you get lifetime flying benefits with that carrier."
The Horrifying Reason You Should Never Wear Hair Elastics Around Your Wrist
For decades now, we've been wearing hair ties on our wrists. Not only is this the most convenient method, but it's also the only way we can keep ourselves from losing them - otherwise, the darn things just disappear. But one Kentucky woman's harrowing tale may cause you to reconsider this accessory altogether.
According to WLKY, Louisville local Audree Kopp noticed a bump on her wrist growing bigger and bigger. Though she was prescribed a course of antibiotics from her doctor, it continued to enlarge and become inflamed, so she went to the emergency room. It was there that she learned her glittery hair tie had caused three kinds of infections in her wrist.
Dr. Amit Gupta at Norton Healthcare, who immediately performed surgery on Audree, believes that bacteria from the difficult-to-clean accessory entered her skin through pores and hair follicles. If she hadn't visited the emergency room when she did, the infection could have turned into sepsis, a life-threatening condition caused by bacteria in the bloodstream. "People have been known to go into a coma, your body shuts down," Audree explained. "It could have been way worse."
We already knew that there is the small (but terrifying!) possibility of being paralyzed by a dirty makeup brush, but this story is somehow even scarier. Germs hiding in gunky brushes are a given, but we never expected them to be in our innocuous hair ties. Maybe it's for the best that they get lost when we're not wearing them – they have the potential to cause serious harm.

Teacher Gives 13-Year-Old Student "Most Likely to Become a Terrorist" Award
Student award ceremonies are supposed to be an uplifting and congratulatory way for students to celebrate their accomplishments from the school year, but this Texas middle school decided to have a "mock award ceremony," where some incredibly offensive awards were given out. Lizeth Villanueva, a 13-year-old student at Anthony Aguirre Junior High in Houston was "shocked" when she was named "most likely to become a terrorist" at the ceremony.
"It was not a joke," Lizeth told Click2Houston. "I do not feel comfortable with this."
The award was included among other "joke" honors, like "most likely to cry for every little thing" and "most likely to become homeless." These were given out to students in an honors program that prepares the kids for college.

This came just one day after the horrific terrorist attack in Manchester where 22 innocent lives were taken. "That's not something to joke around with," Lizeth said, and we couldn't agree more.
The school has since issued a statement on Twitter, explaining that there are plans to launch an investigation following this "insensitive and offensive fake mock awards."
"I want to assure all students, parents, and community members that these award statements and ideals are NOT representative of the Aguirre Vision, Mission, and educational goals for its students," Principal Eric Lathan wrote. "An investigation will be launched into these events."

Lizeth's mother, Ena Hernandez, was furious. "We're really upset about it coming from a teacher," Ena told the Houston station. "That program is supposed to be for advanced kids. It is kind of hard to believe that she's doing that. A teacher giving this to a 13-year-old. How is she going to feel when she grows up later on?"
The school has reportedly suspended the teacher responsible for the award for the remainder of the school year, which ends this week, and the school did not say if she would be back next year.
"Suspension is not enough," Ena said.

Strength vs. Cardio - Here's How You Should Structure Your Workout
Ask most trainers and they'll tell you that a healthy workout routine consists of strength training, cardio, and rest days, ideally spread throughout the week. But for those of us who love two-a-days or long sessions at the gym or just need to maximize our time, the common question seems to be: Which do I do first, strength or cardio?
This was the burning question I had for Natalie Carey, certified trainer and sports nutritionist at DIAKADI Fitness. "Strength training should always come first - always," Natalie said without skipping a beat. The benefits of structuring your workouts this way are plenty, she added.
Fat Loss
If losing weight is your goal - specifically fat - weight training before your cardio session has major benefits, Natalie said. She explained that strength training increases the "afterburn effect." Your resting metabolism rate is heightened and your body is working to help your muscles recover, which results in an increased calorie burn long after the workout is over. This is an ideal place to be in when you hit your cardio session.
Diana Chaloux, CPT and owner of the online personal-training website HitchFit, is also in agreement. "When you strength train, your body utilizes glycogen (stored carbohydrates) for fuel," Diana said. "So if you strength train first and then do lower-intensity cardio immediately after, which uses fat for fuel, you create an environment in your body conducive to fat metabolism." Basically by the time you get to your cardio session, your body will be primed to burn fat at a higher rate than if you did it the other way around.
Injury Prevention
Compared to cardio, it's much easier to get injured while strength training. And strength training while tired only increases that risk, said Natalie. This is perhaps the biggest reason she advises clients to strength train before a cardio session. "You want to make sure you have the energy to perform the exercises correctly," she said. "Poor form can result in an injury that will get you off track with your training goals." Best to hit up those lunges, kettlebell swings, and push-ups when muscles are fresh!
It's important to note that even if you feel energized and unaffected by your cardio session, your body was still put through the motions and energy stores were depleted. This fatigue may cause your form and focus to be affected in ways you might not be able to notice on your own. Whatever you ultimately decide, be mindful of how you feel and do your best to know when it's time to back off.
3 Men Who Were Lucky Enough to Steal Shakira's Heart
One thing we've learned from Shakira's time in the public eye is that she is a girl who loves a good long-term connection. We've only seen her with a few men and only in relationships that last years on end.
She has never gotten married, but that's because she doesn't think it's essential. "I just don't find marriage a necessary step in a couple's life," she told Latina in 2014. And while you might only remember her with the father of her children, Gerard Piqué, there were a couple of men who came before.
The Queen Ordered Charles and Diana's Divorce and More Dramatic Details You Didn't Know

With the 20th anniversary of Princess Diana's tragic death approaching, interest in her life - and especially her marriage to Prince Charles - has piqued in recent months. The relationship between Charles and Diana was tumultuous, to say the least; they met after Charles first dated Diana's older sister, Lady Sarah McCorquodale, and only went on 12 dates before getting engaged in February 1981 and tying the knot five months later. By late 1992 (after collective affairs and embarrassing leaked audio conversations), Charles and Diana's 11-year marriage was a disaster - and the royal family couldn't hide it anymore.
Charles's parents, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, met with the couple for an intervention of sorts. Philip and Diana exchanged heartfelt letters that Summer in which he expressed his disappointment at both her and Charles's extramarital affairs and asked her to see both of their slip-ups from the other's point of view; at one point he seemed ready to give up, writing, "I will always do my utmost to help you and Charles to the best of my ability. . . but I am quite ready to concede that I have no talent as a marriage counselor." Their attempts at reconciliation were unsuccessful, and that December, Prime Minister John Major publicly announced the pair's "amicable separation," reading an official statement from the royal family.

After their separation, more rumors of cheating emerged, and Diana conducted a tell-all interview with the BBC's Martin Bashir in which she disclosed details about her own infidelity and struggle with bulimia as well as Charles's affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, making the famous quote, "There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded." Ultimately, Elizabeth gave up too - likely fed up with doing damage control for Charles and Diana's cheating scandals and the blowback from Diana broadcasting their business, she sprung into action. On Dec. 20, 1995, Buckingham Palace announced that the queen had written separate letters to the couple ordering them to divorce ASAP, an unprecedented move at the time. "After considering the present situation, the queen wrote to both the prince and princess earlier this week and gave them her view, supported by the Duke of Edinburgh, that an early divorce is desirable," a palace statement said. It added that both Elizabeth and Philip would "continue to do all they can to help and support the Prince and Princess of Wales, and most particularly their children, in this difficult period." Charles agreed formally in writing soon after, but it took Diana until February to announce her agreement after negotiations with Charles and representatives for Elizabeth and until July for the couple to agree on the terms of their divorce.
Queen Elizabeth reportedly wanted to let Diana keep the style of her royal highness, but Charles was "adamant" that she give it up.
Their divorce was finalized in August 1996, but some drama surrounding her title ensued. Queen Elizabeth reportedly wanted to let Diana keep the style of her royal highness, but Charles was "adamant" that she give it up - instead, she was given the title Diana, Princess of Wales. The loss of the honorific separated Diana from the rest of the family in such a way that she had to curtsy to those that had it, including her own children. Heartbreakingly, a 14-year-old Prince William is said to have comforted his mother after the loss of her title by saying, "Don't worry, Mummy, I will give it back to you one day when I am king."

Diana was allowed to keep her apartment at Kensington Palace - which now serves as the official residence of William, Kate Middleton, and their two children - as "a central and secure home for The Princess and the children." She was given access to the royal family's jets and was able "to use the state apartments at St. James's Palace for entertaining," as long as asked the queen's permission first. She was also permitted to keep all the jewelry she amassed during her marriage, with the exception of the Cambridge Lover's Knot tiara, which Elizabeth gave to her as a wedding present after only wearing it once. It was lent to Kate Middleton in both 2015 and 2016.
Buckingham Palace publicly stated that as the mother of heirs to the throne, Diana would continue to be regarded as a member of the royal family and "will from time to time receive invitations to state and national public occasions" at the invitation "of the sovereign or the Government." She and Charles were granted equal access to Prince William and Prince Harry, who were 14 and 11 at the time, respectively, and the boys alternated holidays with each of their parents when they weren't attending boarding school. Things seemed to be civil between Charles and Diana as they worked together to coparent their boys after the divorce and up until Diana's death in August 1997. During an inquest into the tragedy in January 2007, Deputy Coroner of the Queen's Household Baroness Butler-Sloss said, "I am satisfied that at her death, Diana Princess of Wales continued to be considered as a member of the Royal Household."

Things like toluene, a chemical that's connected to reproductive abnormalities; formaldehyde, a potentially cancer-causing carcinogen; and dibutyl phthalate (DBP), which is banned in Europe because it can cause reproductive challenges, have long been ingredients we've been using to paint our nails. But with the uptick of brands paying closer attention to toxicity levels in products, there are now many safe polishes to choose from. See how they stack up.

19 of the Best Sports Bras For Big Busts
Beware of the sports bra purporting to be supportive, high-impact, and suited for bigger busts and yet serves better as a slingshot than the sturdy friend you need in your many athletic endeavors. Seriously . . . beware.
For women with bigger breasts, the sports bra market is pretty saturated with compression bras, i.e. the dreaded uniboob bra, that are tight enough to keep everything in place. While those can feel firm, it's best to opt for an encapsulation bra, i.e. one that has separate cups, that can also have a slight compression feel to it so that your breasts are supported but not suffocated.
These types of bras also typically have a traditional back closure - like regular underwire bras - since their tightness should make it so that you wouldn't normally be able to put it on over your head and shoulders. All of these characteristics are the makings of one badass bra for badass workouts, like anything from boot camp to CrossFit to plain old running.
So while a lot of bras claim to be high impact and sadly aren't, there are still a ton of great selections out there. Keep reading for our favorites - many of them come in smaller sizes, but we've called out their larger cup-size offerings.

This 1 Dior Lip Stain Will Turn Liquid Lip Haters Into Addicts
There's a time and a place for that "your lips but better" look, and if you want that subtle, naked flush, Dior Addict Lip Tattoo ($30) delivers. But sometimes, you just need to wear something that's not close to your lips at all. For instance, no one's born with a holographic pout, but every once in a while, unicorn duty calls. That's why I'm making room on my vanity for Rouge Dior Liquid Lip Stain ($35).
I like to think of Rouge Dior as Lip Tattoo's crazier cousin. In a promo video for the product, longtime Dior-lover Natalie Portman sings and dances to James Brown's "I Feel Good" (the song also serves as one of the lipstick's official hashtags). The playful spirit of this launch is evident in the bold colors, which are available in matte, metal, and satin finishes.
According to the brand's clinical studies, the hues last 12 hours. I can't speak to that statistic, but according to my very unofficial research, the color lasted through our morning coffee (no small feat!). The mineral-wax formula is surprisingly creamy for a liquid lip. I'm pretty sure the watery formula of this stain might convert even the most ardent liquid lip haters.
I used Dior Rouge exclusively for one weekend, during which I attended a hot mess of a birthday party, which usually results in my mouth and teeth looking like Smudge City. However, I never once noticed any stray pigment streaked where it shouldn't have been.
What's more, the mineral wax, powder, and oil formula coats the lips like a soft, silky slip dress. Dior Rouge Lip Stain boasts one of the most dramatically curved applicators I've seen, which ensures that the color stays put as you paint it on.
For now, you can pick up your own tube on Dior.com. Come September, the line extends to Sephora.com. Until then, you might need time to pick out your favorite of the 29 colors, so read on to see them all.
12 Clever Ways to Organize Your Beauty Stash Inspired by the KonMari Method
One of the greatest luxuries in my life is space. When a surface - be it my office desk or vanity bureau at home or bathroom cabinet - lacks clutter, my head instantly feels clearer. And the funny thing about space is that while it's free and something I can control, I often don't see much of it. As a beauty editor, I am constantly getting new products to test, and while this sounds pretty awesome (and it is!), it also leads to untidiness. So I crave clean space and product-free countertops.
Before my now-fiancé moved into my apartment last Fall, he gifted me Marie Kondo's bestselling book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. And for me, it really was both life changing and magical. The essence of the KonMari method is to take out all of your items in a category and examine each one, questioning "does this bring me joy?" And only if it does, do you keep it. She then offers a ton of storage ideas, such as stacking items vertically in drawers so you can see them.
After reading it cover to cover, I took two days off to handle the big clean-out task. When I was on the other side of the emotional journey, I felt wonderful and my apartment finally felt more spacious. My beauty stash was significantly cut down, and while I have to work hard to upkeep it, I now know what to do when it's time to declutter.
If you feel like you need to try this method, keep reading to discover KonMari-inspired tricks and organizational ideas for your beauty goodies, shared by Instagram users.
Back-to-School Rituals I Passed Down to My Children
Last year, I had my first real back-to-school moments as a parent with my oldest daughter, a kindergartener. While some rituals have changed since my own school days, so many others remain the same. As we shared this rite of passage, I thought of my parents and the ways we used to get ready for the start of a new year. Here's how we re-create those moments together now - with slightly modern updates.
Sephora Points Now Expire, Which Is a Good Excuse to Spend Them All Right Now
Eagle-eyed beauty junkies have discovered something that impacts probably just about everyone reading this: the Sephora Beauty Insider points you've been hoarding for years now have an expiration date. And the internet has a lot of feelings about this news. In fact, many Sephora shoppers look like this right now:
As soon as we heard this fact, we began poring over Sephora's Terms & Conditions document as if we were researching for the new season of Serial. Here's the updated policy: to keep your Beauty Insider status, you must spend $350 per year. VIB Rouge Members must spend $1,000 in the same amount of time. Your points will only only expire if you have absolutely no activity on your account. If you pick up a Birthday Gift (best part of the year!), cash in any Beauty Insider reward, or simply just make a purchase on your Beauty Insider account, your points are safe.
Look at it this way: you now have an excuse to buy more makeup.

This Is Where the Little Girl Who Played Selena in the 1997 Movie Is Now
Ever wondered what happened to the little girl who played Selena Quintanilla alongside Jennifer Lopez in the 1997 movie Selena and where she is now? Her name is Becky Lee Meza, and while she is no longer singing or acting, she has accomplished quite a bit since landing every young Latina's dream role at 10 years old.
Shortly after the film's release and success, Meza went on to release her own recording album. What many may not know is that this was the first time Selena fans heard her singing voice, as she lip-synced to the vocals of then-teen sensation Jennifer Peña in the film. The concept album, "Vive tu Sueño," was made for a kid audience, featuring covers such as "Over the Rainbow" in both Spanish and English and other songs aimed to guide young listeners to follow their dreams.
Although these two projects were her only experiences with the entertainment business, Meza's role as Selena was undoubtedly a defining moment of her childhood and career, and she works hard to help preserve the singer's memory. Now in her 30s and a married mother of four who goes by Becky Burden, Meza lives with her family in Harlingen, Texas. In August 2016, she launched a video blog to keep fans updated on her life.
"I truly believe God had other plans for my life," Meza told Tejano Nation in March 2017. "I feel that I was supposed to experience the filming of the movie and experience the short-lived fame to humble me and just show me a lot of things that I probably wouldn't have learned, had it not been for the movie."
Meza also went on to become a social worker, as well as own a flower and bridal boutique, which happens to be decorated with Selena memorabilia and photos with her movie costars, and appeared at the first Fiesta de la Flor event in 2015, a Corpus Christi, Texas, festival launched to celebrate the life and legacy of the queen of Tejano music.

1 Woman Put 3 Waterproof Eyeliners to the Test - and You Won't Believe What Happened
$6 NYX liner: waterproof, smudgeproof and darker than KVD @ a fraction of the price.
If one of your beauty resolutions for 2017 is to stop spending so much money on makeup, this Redditor's experiment will fascinate you.
Using three of her favorite waterproof liquid liners, Reddit user xcxo submitted her products to a series of rigorous longwear tests, including running water and vigorous rubbing. In the above Imgur gallery, you can see that she applied streaks of pigment to the back of her hand. From left to right, she applied Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Dark Brown ($22), Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper ($20), and NYX Cosmetics Collection Noir Liquid Black Liner ($6).
"$6 NYX liner: waterproof, smudgeproof and darker than KVD @ a fraction of the price," she noted. But other Redditors were quick to (kindly) point out that her results might not be quite accurate. "I have used this liner," Reddit user sabrunka remarked, referring to the NYX formula. "Even though it lasts well on the hand, I notice on the eyes that it will slowly vanish away. I don't see flakes or smears, but parts of my wing will just be missing. I have yet to find something better than Stila's black liner!"
Redditor xcxo acknowledged this as well as the "chipped off" section of the NYX sample. "The chunk is missing because after the liners were wet, I saw that the NYX one seemed to be shiny and that water seemed to adhere to the surface (whereas the other liners didn't have this effect). I rubbed at it pretty hard and pieces peeled off," she explained. "When dry, however, all three liners perform the same when scrubbed/rubber vigorously."
Read through the gallery to see the experiment for yourself, but don't be surprised if it inspires you to indulge in a bit of retail therapy!
This Reddit Hack Will Change How You Wash Your Makeup Brushes
Using a LEGO base plate to wash brushes is an affordable alternative to other methods! from MakeupAddiction
There is a plethora of makeup brush cleaning products on the market, but many of them can come with a hefty price tag. Fortunately for budget-concerned beauty addicts, one Reddit user has found an affordable alternative to the textured silicone gloves and mats sold for washing makeup brushes.
User happyidiot3791 explained in a post that she uses a Lego base plate to wash her brushes as an alternative to more expensive mats and gloves.
The method works because the raised circles on the Lego plate create enough texture for her soap-soaked brushes to be scrubbed, loosening makeup and dirt on her brushes. Using the toy is also much cheaper; a Lego Plate will only run you about $10, while brush cleaning accessories can cost upward of $40.
If you don't already have a Lego mat sitting around the house and aren't too excited about purchasing one, beauty brands are coming out with cheaper alternatives. The AOA Brush Cleaning Egg is only a dollar and is ideal if you only own a few brushes.
The Details of Selena's Death Are Still Haunting, Even 22 Years Later
Selena Quintanilla was taken from us too soon. The Tejano singer was only 23 years old when she died on March 31, 1995, after the president of her fan club and manager of her boutiques, Yolanda Saldívar, shot her in a hotel room at the Days Inn in Corpus Christi, TX. Twenty-two years later, Selena's true fans - a growing group that has recently pushed for the star's own makeup collection with MAC Cosmetics and Hollywood Walk of Fame star - still mourn her untimely death.
The tragic events started with a discovery by Selena's father, Abraham Quintanilla, Jr. When fans started calling and sending letters about not receiving merchandise they had paid for, Abraham noticed Yolanda had embezzled more than $60,000 from the fan club and boutiques. Yolanda was fired, but still held some financial paperwork for the stores. That's why Selena arranged a meeting, at the Days Inn, where at 11:48 a.m. (CST), Yolanda shot Selena on the shoulder. The "Como la Flor" singer managed to escape to the lobby, before she was rushed to the hospital and was pronounced dead.

But the terrible ordeal didn't end there. Yolanda locked herself in her pick-up truck in the parking lot of the hotel with the gun for over 10 hours, finally surrendering after the long standoff with police and the FBI. She was found guilty of Selena's murder in a trial in Houston and is serving her sentence at the Mountain View Unit in Gatesville, TX. She will be eligible for parole in March of 2025.
Since Selena's murder, her cultural relevance has only grown. Her legacy has been celebrated most famously by the 1997 movie, Selena, starring Jennifer Lopez, but also with murals, illustrations, wax figures, tribute concerts, apparel, and even some impressive lip art. She remains a cultural icon among Latinx.

Boy Dies From Drowning a Week After He Went Swimming in Knee-Deep Water
The tragic, startling effects of "dry drowning" took the life of a 4-year-old boy in Texas a week after he went swimming.
Francisco Delgado Jr., who took his son Frankie and the rest of his family to the Texas City Dike near Galveston over Memorial Day weekend, told KHOU News that it was a typical day and that Frankie was fine when he got out of the water.
Shortly afterwards, Frankie began to have symptoms that resembled a stomach bug. For days, he had bouts of vomiting and diarrhea, and a week later, he stopped breathing.
"Out of nowhere, he just woke up. He said ahhh," Delgado said. "He took his last breath and I didn't know what to do."
He called 911 but doctors weren't able to revive him. They told the family that Frankie had fluid in his lungs and around his heart - that he died from dry drowning.
It seemed impossible - mom Tara Delgado said he was only in knee-deep water. The parents now suspect Frankie must have swallowed water, but they never noticed Frankie coughing or in distress, which are often crucial indicators that someone has accidentally inhaled a small amount of water through the mouth or nose, causing their airway to spasm. It's a devastating reminder for parents to always keep watch over their children in the pool, as they could possibly miss the warning signs.
"There are no words to describe how heartbroken we are over the passing of Baby Frankie," the family wrote on their GoFundMe page, which is raising money for the unexpected funeral costs. "He had so much life to live."
