Everything You Know About Passwords Is Wrong, but There's Some Good News

Coming up with a new password is probably one of the most mundane and annoying things a person has to do in their everyday life. Do you make it something easy to remember? Or do you add in a bunch of symbols for extra security? Most people tend to opt for the easier path and come up with something they'll remember . . . and then end up writing it down on their phone or a piece of paper. But if you're one of the people who followed the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) guidelines about including numbers, characters, and capital letters in your password (or were one of the many people whose employers told them to do so), we have some good and bad news for you: those rules are totally useless and don't actually help. Now, how about you start making your passwords words you'll actually remember?

Back in 2003, NIST created a guide titled "Special Publication 800-63-3. Appendix A." on how to come up with the best password. The rules stated that a secure password would use numbers, special characters, and capital letters and be changed regularly. However, the man who came up with these rules, Bill Burr, told the Wall Street Journal on Aug. 7 that it's all wrong. He based all his information on a paper published in the 1980s - before the internet as we know it existed. The 72-year-old man says he "regrets" his mistake.

If you're about ready to tear your hair out after realizing how much time you've spent agonizing over your password choices, there's a silver lining. NIST updated the guidelines in June and released a new set of rules in "Special Publication 800-63-3." NIST now wants sites and companies to forgo requiring people to change their passwords periodically, which makes sense since a study from Carleton University revealed that this is a pretty useless tactic. The organization also wants sites to let users come up with passwords that are 64 characters long (with spaces), so that people can use words they'll actually remember.

So, go forth and make your passwords words you'll never forget. Or, better yet, get a password manager like LastPass or 1Password and have it come up with those complicated passwords for you - which you can then access with a master password that fits NIST's new guidelines.

9 Times Kate Middleton's Outfit Was No Match For a Gust of Wind

Kate Middleton is one of the chicest women in the world, and it has very little to do with the fact that she's a member of the royal family. Even before she tied the knot with Prince William in 2011, the duchess boasted a wardrobe full of easy, classic pieces that also happened to translate well during a high-profile event (or tea with the queen). These days, nearly everything Kate throws on grabs headlines, but that doesn't mean she's immune to one of fashion's most treacherous pitfalls - a gust of wind.

Over the years, Kate has fallen victim to a windy day on numerous occasions and in many different countries; most recently, the white Emilia Wickstead dress she wore during a day in India was no match for a gust of wind, but as usual, Kate played it completely cool. It just goes to show that anyone can have a Marilyn Monroe moment, even royalty. Keep reading for nine times that Kate's look was straight out of The Seven Year Itch.

These Trendy Halloween Bowls Are Causing a Shopping Frenzy

If you're active on Instagram or Pinterest, you've likely seen the white, farmhouse-friendly pottery featuring handwritten font that is popping up on everyone's feed. The artist Rae Dunn is the creator behind the popular housewares, which are sold nationwide. While stores like T.J. Maxx are treasure troves for finding Rae Dunn mugs at affordable prices, there's a certain category of Rae Dunn pottery that is in particularly high demand: Hocus Pocus themed nesting bowls. A simple Google search will unearth a variety of eBay listings that offer the two-bowl set for as high as $341. While it might be harder to find these bowls at a local discount store, you never know. Riverdale: There's a Chance Betty Is Secretly Related to Sabrina and We're Losing It

Riverdale left us with a dozen and one questions during its first season finale, but there's one mystery in particular that we're dying to uncover: when is Sabrina Spellman coming to town? Even though the show didn't take the supernatural route in season one like we originally anticipated, that doesn't mean the idea is off-limits in season two. In fact, the cast has teased on multiple occasions that the plot will get even darker and weirder from here on out. And what says dark and weird more than a teenage witch living on the other side of Sweetwater River from where Jason Blossom was murdered?

While the appearance of Sabrina would certainly cause an uptick in paranormal activity, some fans believe there are already witches living in Riverdale. Yes, you heard us right. While the Blossom family has often been referred to as "evil incarnate" by Alice Cooper, what if she's actually the direct descendant of the Spellman coven instead?

Not only does Mrs. Cooper often use words like "brew" and "witching hour" in everyday conversation, but she seems to be hiding some dark secrets, other than the fact that she has a mysterious son, of course. What if she's actually related to the Spellman family, but decided to go against her witch heritage when she was younger? That could explain why she fled the south side to create a new "picture-perfect" lifestyle with Hal after high school. And if Alice Cooper is a Spellman, that means Betty and Polly are also related to Sabrina. Talk about a major plot twist!

Check out the pretty convincing scenes below and let us know what you think in the comments!

The Complete Timeline of Emma Roberts and Evan Peters' Turbulent Romance

Emma Roberts and Evan Peters started dating back in 2012 after meeting on the set of their movie, Adult World, and in the short four years since then, the two have shared more drama than some of Hollywood's biggest blockbusters. We're talking at least two breakups, one nasty domestic violence incident, makeups, deleting all social media traces of each other, sharing the screen on American Horror Story, and a broken engagement. While they appear to be back together now, we wouldn't be surprised if their long and complicated love story took another sharp turn soon.

This Optical Illusion Is Blowing the Internet's Collective Mind

From a brick wall to the dress, we may be the most technologically advanced generation, but there's nothing we enjoy more than a good mental magic trick. It should come as no surprise, then, that any time someone spots one of these gems in the wild, it immediately makes its way to social media - and immediately goes viral. The latest example of our enduring love for optical mind-trickery, which made its way to the internet this week, comes in the form of a magician's brand new take on a classic optical illusion.

Fifty-eight-year-old Roswell, GA, resident Victoria Skye bills herself as a magical entertainer and illusion artist, and her personal website is chock-full of reasons why that's the perfect way to describe her work. But it took Martin S. Taylor posting one of her artworks to Twitter on Aug. 7 to make her truly go viral - and to spark a fierce debate over whether or not the many lines in the image are bent or, as many claim, are parallel and straight.

The "café wall" illusion is traditionally "an optical illusion produced by a black and white rectangular tessellation when the tiles are shifted in a zigzag pattern," according to Wolfram Alpha, which also confirms that "While the pattern seems to diverge towards the upper and lower right corners in the upper figure, the gray lines are actually parallel." In other words, it's all about the combination of math and colors, which Skye excellently illustrated in her image.

Don't worry, though, if you don't really see what you think you're supposed to - you're not alone. The internet is awash with individuals speculating on whether they had just fallen victim to a hoax, or if there was something wrong with a large percentage of the population's brains. Fortunately, thanks to mathematicians over the past couple of centuries, we can unequivocally say that the lines are in fact straight. You just have to convince your mind to see what it's supposed to.

Real talk: When you do actually see it correctly after staring at it for hours, boy is it a satisfying feeling. Spend some time with a full-size version of Skye's photo, below.

Will There Be a Second Season of The Defenders? Here's What We Know

Have you finished binge-watching The Defenders season one yet? If you did, and you're now breathlessly awaiting the second season, you're not alone. While Netflix has not officially greenlit season two as of yet, barring some kind of epic flop for the first season (which we don't anticipate and which social media does not seem to be predicting), a Defenders season two seems like a no-brainer. Here's what we know so far.

Of the four original stand-alone series upon which The Defenders is based, three have aired just one season. Only Daredevil has aired a second season. As of now, both Jessica Jones and Luke Cage have a second season currently in the works. In keeping with the timing of the original releases, Jessica Jones will be the second stand-alone to air a second season, followed by Luke Cage. Both are expected to be released in 2018.

Daredevil will also be releasing its third season in 2018, but before we get to any of those, the Punisher spinoff will air first. No release date has been announced, but it will premiere on Netflix before the end of 2017.

Iron Fist, the last of the stand-alones to be released, has also been renewed for a second season, though there is even less known about its potential release date than the other shows. Iron Fist received considerably lower critical ratings and a more negative fan reaction than its predecessors, a lot of which might have had to do with the fact that Marvel and Netflix were hurrying to complete its first season in order to get to The Defenders, so it's not nearly as polished as the first seasons of the other stand-alones.

Still, Iron Fist scored a coveted renewal, which means filming time for a potential second season of The Defenders is going to be at a premium. We know that filming is underway for both Jessica Jones season two and Luke Cage season two, but the production company still has to juggle the filming schedules for Daredevil season three and Iron Fist season two.

Keeping all that in mind, we would wager that fans won't see a Defenders season two until early 2019, but you never know.

20 Timeless Photos of Lucille Ball That Prove She'll Always Be an Icon

When you think of the glitz and glamour of Hollywood's golden era, you probably think of Lucille Ball. The actress was best known for her starring role on the iconic TV show I Love Lucy alongside her real-life husband, Desi Arnaz, but she was so much more than that. In addition to being remarkably beautiful, Lucy was incredibly fierce and determined in a time when those qualities weren't as welcomed in women.

She grew up in Jamestown, NY, before fleeing to the city to chase her dreams of performing. She eventually settled in California, where she became a star. Lucy was a boss (albeit sometimes hard to work with), never took no for an answer, and wanted things done her way. She helped pave the way for women in Hollywood and is still such a resilient and positive force in Hollywood (and comedy) today, more than 28 years after her death. Keep reading to see some of her most iconic moments.

Leonardo DiCaprio Speaking Italian to the Pope Will Do Ungodly Things to Your Body

Image Source: Getty / Alessandra Benedetti

Back in January 2016, Leo came face to face with Pope Francis at the Vatican, a moment that was filmed as part of the Oscar winner's documentary Before the Flood. While entering the room, Leo gave a sweet and utterly charming greeting to the Pope in Italian, kissing his hand and saying, "Your Holiness, thank you for granting me this private audience with you." It's only a few seconds, but it sure is enough to make you swoon. Now, if we could only hear a little bit of that love language while on a romantic date with Leo, we'd die happy.

Ahead, check out what the solar eclipse features will look like on Snapchat, and don't miss out on the fun on Aug. 21!

10 Latino Customs That Made You Have Trust Issues

Forget mommy and daddy issues - there should be an entirely separate category for the trust issues that stem from the butter container in your fridge. It's not butter, and we all know it.

Growing up in a Latinx family means that you were all over the place when it came to timing (five minutes sometimes meant two hours and other times meant 30 minutes), knew cookies were never in the cookie tin, and couldn't differentiate blood relatives from acquaintances. Your parents quirkiest habits created more than a few trust issues that even now have you questioning everything.

The Easiest Way to Shred Chicken

While you can always shred chicken with your hands, this tends to give you chicken chunks rather than fluffy shreds. Instead, shred the chicken with a fork. It's easier to tear the meat with a metal utensil, plus it's a cleaner, more sanitary process.

  1. Start with poached chicken that is cooled slightly but still warm. What's pictured is a skinless, boneless chicken breast, poached in chicken broth for flavor and saltiness.
  2. Use one hand or a fork to hold the chicken steady. With the other hand, use another fork to scrap and tear the chicken flesh into small, shredded pieces. When the fork becomes full of chicken shreds, use your fingers or another fork to pull the pieces off the fork and onto the plate. Repeat the process until the chicken is completely shredded.
  3. Transfer the shredded chicken to an airtight container and refrigerate for two to four days. Use the shredded chicken in casseroles, salads, tacos, curries, and sandwiches. Here are a few of our favorite uses for shredded chicken breast.

I Tested Out the 18 Uses Dr. Bronner's Soap Claims to Be Good For

A few years ago, my mom recommended I start using Dr. Bronner's hemp pure-castile soap for my dry skin. Once I replaced the body wash I was using at the time, I've never gone back to anything else. Not only does it smell amazing (I use lavender, but there's also peppermint, rose, eucalyptus, and four other varieties), but it leaves my skin feeling incredibly soft after a shower. Plus, a 32-oz. bottle will last you months for a price of $14 on Amazon.

Though I've mainly been using Dr. Bronner's as a body wash, the soap is known for having multiple beauty and household uses. In fact, the bottle label claims "18-in-1" different ways it can be used, so I decided to test out what I could. Turns out, the 100 percent biodegradable solution is an effective all-purpose solution for pretty much anything.

What's in it?

Dr. Bronner's is made with organic oils and zero foaming agents, which means you won't get the sudsy result like from a traditional soap. But that doesn't mean it's not working. The list of ingredients is straight from the bottle: water, organic coconut oil, potassium hydroxide, organic palm kernel oil, organic olive oil, lavandin extract, organic hemp oil, organic jojoba oil, lavender extract, citric acid, and tocopherol.

Basically, it's tough enough to clean household appliances but gentle enough to use on skin, even a baby's.

What can it do?

Here's a list of ways you should and shouldn't use the soap based on my experience. Because Dr. Bronner's is more concentrated than most soaps, you'll want to dilute the solution based on what you're using it for. Here's a handy cheat sheet to refer to.

  1. Face wash: [YES] My face is a dry-oily combo, but it gently cleanses my face without leaving a sticky layer.
  2. Body wash: [YES] I cannot rave about Dr. Bronner's as an amazing body wash enough. For some, cleansing with this soap even eliminates the need to apply body lotion afterward. Pro tip: purchase a bottle pump for easy application. I add three pumps to my loofah and run it under the shower head for a second before scrubbing.
  3. Shampoo: [NO] Because the soap doesn't lather quite like a traditional shampoo, your hair gets easily tangled. The website suggests following it with Dr. Bronner's Organic Citrus Conditioning Hair Rinse for smooth and silky hair, which I didn't have.
  4. Tub cleaner: [YES] A couple pumps of soap onto a wet sponge will scrub your bathtub clean.
  5. For shaving: [YES] Work the soap into a lather and apply to the area. My skin is left smooth and moisturized after a shave.
  6. Toothpaste: [NO] It literally tastes like soap, so I'd rather stick to my traditional tube.
  7. Foot bath: [YES] It's a relaxing soak and your feet will feel so soft afterward.
  8. For congestion: [KIND OF] If you add a tablespoon into a bowl of hot water and breathe it in with a towel draped over your head, the results are very relaxing. But I think the peppermint or eucalyptus scent (over the lavender) would've been much more effective for clearing my sinuses.
  9. Dish soap: [YES] I scrubbed a frying pan with the soap and it was surprisingly tough on grease.
  10. Laundry: [NOT SURE] I didn't trust my building's machines enough to test it as a laundry detergent. Plus, the website says to rinse with vinegar, which I didn't have.
  11. Mopping: [NOT SURE] I do not have a mop, but I do trust that it would get the job done.
  12. All-purpose cleaner: [YES] If you add a quarter of a cup to a spray bottle of water, you can use the soap as a surface cleaner. But make sure you thoroughly wipe it off to prevent leaving any oily residue.
  13. Window cleaner: [NOT SURE] Instructions say to follow up with pure club soda or a 1:1 vinegar-water solution, which I didn't have.
  14. Toilet: [KIND OF] If your toilet is in pretty good condition, scrubbing with a toilet brush will mostly do it. But for tougher jobs, the website suggests sprinkling baking soda first, which makes it a stretch to me.
  15. Fruit and veggie rinse: [YES] I'm usually fine rinsing with just water, but of course a little soap will help. I wouldn't say it's completely necessary, but it will obviously clean your produce.
  16. For dog washing: [NOT SURE] I unfortunately don't have any pets to bathe, but if it's gentle enough for baby's skin, I assume the natural solution will also effectively clean your dog's coat. The website's FAQ section confirms that it's safe for both babies and dogs.
  17. Plant spray for bugs: [NOT SURE] I also do not have any plants to test this out on.
  18. Ant spray: [NOT SURE] Luckily, I don't have an ant problem. If you do decide to try it for yourself, the website says to use the tea tree soap for ants.

Final thoughts:

I do think some of the uses are a stretch, but all in all, I highly recommend Dr. Bronner's soap for multiple purposes. It's organic and vegan, tough but gentle, and an item I'll always have in my house.

All You Need For This Workout Is a Set of 2-Pound Weights

You don't have to lift 30-pound dumbbells to tone up and see gains at the gym. In fact, lighter weights can be just as effective as heavy ones, according to a 2010 McMaster University study. The study tracked 49 men who already had experience weight training for a year. Half of the group was assigned to lift heavier weights, which would cause them to fatigue after performing 10 reps. The other group was assigned lighter weights, which would cause fatigue around 25 reps. Both groups would train four times a week for 12 weeks.

Surprisingly, the resulting gains between the two groups were essentially identical. Each set of men improved their strength regardless of the weights lifted. Although the study only monitored men, the scientists have plans to test the same study on women. Their hypothesis? It's muscle fatigue - not the size of the actual weight - that builds stronger muscles. Something our friends at Barre3 know all about.

"By using lighter weights and doing more reps, you're getting deep in your muscle," said Dino Malvone, Barre3 instructor and studio director of its West Village location in New York City. "The goal here is longevity. Yes, lighter weights can be challenging. But for us, lighter weights have clients coming back the next day, and then day after, too."

Created by Sadie Lincoln, Barre3 combines elements of yoga, Pilates, and ballet barre and maxes out using five-pound weights. Want to get all-over toning with just a pair of light dumbbells? We've got you covered. Check out this easy, total-body workout, courtesy of our friends at Barre3. The best part: all you need is a set of two-pound weights, for starters.

"Start with two pounds, and progress from there," Malvone suggested. "You can use different weights for different movements as you get comfortable. Learning how the body works is a part of what keeps you safe."

Skeletons say arthritis isn't about aging - it's about activity

A new study of old skeletons suggests that the recent increase in arthritis is about lifestyle, not aging or obesity.

Here's What - and When - to Eat Before Working Out

When it comes to working out, it's important to feel energized, but it's not always as simple as grabbing a snack on your way out the door. Eating too close to exercise is a recipe for discomfort, but heading to the gym hungry isn't ideal either.

To learn how to maximize the potential of a workout, I spoke with nutritionist Heidi Skolnik, MS, CDN, FACSM, and author of Nutrient Timing for Peak Performance ($20) to find out what to eat and when before heading to the gym.

Why You Need to Be Eating Fat If You Want to Lose Weight

The secret to dropping pounds, reducing your risk of heart disease, and feeling better overall may just be filling your plate with fats. While eating more fat doesn't mean drowning your veggies in butter, it does mean focusing on two types of "good" fats: MUFAs, or monounsaturated fats, and PUFAs (polyunsaturated fats), which include omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

Why are good fats so, well, good for you? For one, unsaturated fats contain disease-fighting antioxidants like vitamin E, and have been shown to help lower bad cholesterol levels to reduce your risk of heart disease. Plus, omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids are important for keeping many of our body functions, like our immune system and heart, in top shape. If you're trying to drop pounds here's another important reasons to embrace good fats: MUFAS have been shown to help burn away belly fat.

While MUFAs and PUFAs reign supreme, a little bit of saturated fat in your diet may not be as bad as previously thought. Recent studies have suggested that saturated fats in foods like milk, cheese, and meat may not be as harmful as previously thought, after a analysis found no correlation between a high saturated fat diet and an increased risk of heart disease. Coconut oil, a plant-based saturated fat, has actually been shown to raise levels of the "good" cholesterol, HDL, in recent studies. Current guidelines still suggest limiting your saturated and trans fats intake, however, so it's up to you to make educated decisions about how much you should eat.

That said, eating more fat isn't a bad thing, as long as it's done in moderation. Remember that fats, whether good or bad, are still high in calories, so be sure to keep this in mind when you plan your diet; current dietary guidelines suggest that for a 2000-calorie diet the daily intake of fat, including healthy fats, should be no more than 65 grams. Registered dietitian Julie Upton recommends replacing "low-quality carbs or other foods rich in saturated fats" with foods high in MUFAs and PUFAs to help accommodate the extra calories. Check out our list of some of the best sources of unsaturated fats below, and keep these numbers in mind while you adjust to adding more fat to your diet.

Pay Special Attention to That "Topknot" Dude on Game of Thrones

Though he might have been the subject of flippant scrutiny for wearing his hair in a man bun during the season seven Game of Thrones premiere, the mysterious character Thoros of Myr is a pretty huge deal in the series' universe. The companion of Beric Dondarrion - and now Sandor "The Hound" Clegane - possesses a power that we've rarely seen exhibited in the show so far: the ability to bring the dead back to life.

Thoros is a more fleshed-out character in the Song of Ice and Fire books, wherein it's explained that he is a fire priest of R'hllor who failed to convert King Robert Baratheon and has returned to the faith after a brave stint in his army. Thoros is one of the founding members of the Brotherhood Without Banners and uses his faith on the road with the band of guerrilla soldiers to repeatedly bring Beric Dondarrion back to life. In season three when Melisandre has an encounter with Thoros, he tells her that the Lord of Light has brought Beric back from death six separate times.

In the books, Thoros travels alongside and serves Lady Stoneheart, the vengeful zombie-like figure with an insatiable thirst for Frey and Lannister blood. Since we now know that Stoneheart won't be appearing in the HBO series, it seems that Thoros may serve another important role in how the Game of Thrones plot unfolds. It is Thoros who asks The Hound what he sees in the fire during the season seven premiere, and based on Clegane's stunned acceptance that he actually sees visions of The Wall in the flickering flames, it might be Thoros who brings the man to believe in R'hllor.

Will we see The Hound become a religious man in season seven? If so, it's likely that we'd have Thoros of Myr to thank. But even more importantly, with the Brotherhood headed to fight White Walkers at The Wall, Thoros's resurrection powers will be more vital than ever to the human cause. Every fighter that Thoros can recall from death in the war against the Night's King is one more chance that mortal men have in the fight for Westeros.

So don't be fooled by that adorable topknot - he's a pretty major deal!

Target's Removing Your Favorite Affordable Fashion Lines - and We're in Shock

My pit stops to Target in search of a toothbrush and snacks usually lead me to stop by and browse through the fashion racks too. The retailer offers a dizzying array of trendy yet affordable pieces and is a hidden gem for cool designer collabs (remember Victoria Beckham?). But soon, your favorite original labels will disappear completely off the shelves.

Target plans to remove some customer favorites like Mossimo and Merona and replace them with 12 new clothing, accessory, and decor lines. Though we recently got a glimpse of the new fashion line A New Day, we're definitely sad to see our old labels go, especially when some of the offerings are items we could easily incorporate into our everyday wardrobes. Read on to shop our top style picks before they vanish.
