This Old Ad Will Make You Realize Just How Far Netflix Has Come

Netflix was born in 1997 thanks to a $40 late fee, and 20 years later it's not just still around - it's a genre-defying giant.

Cofounded by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph, the company was incorporated on Aug. 29, 1997 and was originally called Kibble, before moving onto NetFlix, and then finally settling on Netflix. And it has become the streaming service through which to binge-watch movies and TV shows and a meme, and it has changed the way we watch television.

According to a Fortune Magazine interview on Jan. 28, 2009, Hastings said the idea of Netflix came from a $40 late fee he received for the movie Apollo 13. "I remember the fee because I was embarrassed by it," Hastings said to Fortune. Along with Randolph, the two mailed CDs in an envelope to Hastings' address and waited to see if the items remained intact. They did, and now the company is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Though Randolph allegedly contends that the story is made up, Netflix still enjoys retelling the bit.

The company first rented DVDs to people in April 1998 and quickly progressed to a subscription service by Sept. 23, 1999. In an ad for the company in 1998, Netflix, then NetFlix, explains why it's a better alternative to Blockbuster or other DVD rental shops. "You won't have to search for a video store that carries more than a few titles. You'll never again have to fight to get a copy of a new release. When you're finished, you just send it back in a pre-addressed, pre-paid mailer. You can rent two DVD's for just four bucks each! Rent additional titles for a measly three dollars each! And the newest releases from Hollywood can be reserved for only five dollars."

Watch the ad for yourself above, and remember a time when the idea of Netflix was completely novel.

5 Ways to Give Back While You Travel the Globe

While I was exploring New Orleans, I was stopped by a young lady on the street team for the ACLU. Since I was familiar with the organization as a monthly donor, I stopped to hear what she had to say. Breanna told me she and her colleagues were hitting the streets for ESSENCE Festival to shed light on the incarceration rate in Louisiana. I donated $10 and wished her luck on the campaign. As I walked away, I thought about how often I visit cities, take in all they have to offer, but don't make time to give anything back. Which left me asking myself, "How can I give back to the communities I visit?" With a little research, I was able to compile a list of meaningful ways to make a difference while traveling the world.

7 Foods to Absolutely Avoid If You Want Clear, Glowing Skin

Two weeks ago, I went to Whole Foods and stocked up on coconut milk, almond butter, frozen veggies, fresh berries, organic meats, wild salmon, and quinoa. My boyfriend could interpret what this meant: Lauren is back on another food detox.

It started last Summer when I completed Dr. Frank Lipman's two-week Be Well Cleanse. This is a 14-day program in which you eliminate the food groups that most people are sensitive to, including gluten, dairy, alcohol, caffeine, nightshade vegetables, and eggs, among other things, replacing them with a plant-based diet that includes select organic lean meats and fish. You also drink three shakes a day incorporating Dr. Lipman's special blend of powders and take supplements. I learned a ton about myself, my habits, and my skin.

Though I have yet to return to the official cleanse, I do repeat some of the guidelines from it when I feel off-balance, seem bloated, or have less-than-desirable skin (blochy, broken out, puffy under-eyes). Typically, I try to eliminate gluten, dairy, and sugar for about a week or two until I feel and look better. Within three days of sticking to this diet plan, my skin brightens, I fall asleep easier and earlier, and my jeans fit better. It's not about dieting or losing weight; it's about creating harmony within my body. A healthy gut undeniably yields more gorgeous skin.

According to Dr. Lipman, "Your skin is your largest organ and a window into what's going on inside your body. Poor food choices that cause inflammation can lead to numerous skin issues."

If a cleanse is a bit dramatic for you, no worries. You can still reap some of the benefits by making these seven food swaps. Dr. Lipman outlined which foods to avoid, why they are toxic for your skin, and what to replace them with.

This 1 Trick Will Ensure You Never Wear the Wrong Lipstick Again

Great things can come from experimenting with beauty (like rainbow hair, for instance), but playing with makeup doesn't always yield flattering results. Even if you and your best friend are both porcelain-complected, that doesn't mean you can share the same red lipstick - her favorite orangey hue makes you look sick, and your go-to red-blue formula makes her appear washed-out. Not sure why? It all comes down to your skin's undertone.

This has nothing to do with whether you wear fair, medium, or deep foundation. According to Joel Canales, the director of artistry for Hourglass Cosmetics, "skin naturally has a variety of underlying colors." He's right - just take a quick look at your bare arm! You can observe the underlying hues in everything from your veins to your actual complexion. Discovering the dominant shade in your skin is essential in determining which lip colors will best flatter you.

Once you've taken this quiz to figure out your skin's undertone, read on. We had beauty pros break it down for us, and they offered recommendations for three common undertones: warm, cool, and neutral. Warm complexions have a golden cast, cool ones have a blue-pink tint, and neutral undertones are perfectly balanced between the two. Canales explains that you can use these tints as an excellent reference point for buying lipstick - just look for corresponding colors. If you're still not sure where to start, keep reading - your lipstick soul mate is just a few clicks away!

Pittsburgh Will Be First US Airport to Allow Nonflyers Through Security Again

Starting Sept. 5, the Pittsburgh, PA, airport will start allowing nonflyers through the security checkpoint for the first time since the Sept. 11 attacks. Everyone will still have to go through the same security measures as usual, but it will no longer be required to have a boarding pass to get through.

Those wanting to go through security but not fly, whether it's to eat, shop, or be with loved ones, will just need to get a myPITpass inside the airport. The pass, which requires an ID to obtain, will grant you access through security on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

A spokesperson for the TSA told Travel + Leisure that the agency is staffed to "handle the additional influx of people" and that they do not anticipate "any impact on checkpoint wait times." Also, during peak travel times, it's possible the myPITpass privileges may be revoked to make sure the actual travelers can get through security in a timely manner.

And while this is an exciting win for the Pittsburgh airport, there are currently no future plans to open up more US airports to the public at this time, according to reports from USA Today.

Chance the Rapper Raised a Whopping $2.2 Million For 20 Schools in Chicago

Chance the Rapper is on a mission to ensure every kid in Chicago receives a decent education. The 1 Move Every Woman Should Do (and It's Not Squats)

There's one word in the world of fitness that millions of women have grown to truly loathe: squats. Just saying it can elicit shrieks from some of the most mentally tough women around. So let's discuss one move every fit woman needs to do in the gym - and it's not squatting. In fact, the single most important exercise to master today for improved fitness, strength, and overall health is the deadlift.

After years of hearing nothing but "squat, squat, squat" from your trainer, you might be confused. The deadlift is similar to the squat in that it forces you to use many muscle groups simultaneously. More muscles worked means more lean muscle and less fat in the long run so that's a win for both squat and deadlifts. The added benefit with the deadlift is that it uses even more muscles in each rep. While the squat is great for your lower body, the deadlift forces your arms and upper body to work too.

Want another reason? According to Toronto-based personal trainer Nathane Jackson, CSCS, author of Nathane Jackson's Whole Health Revolution (coming later in 2016), the deadlift is also the safer option. So, it's safer and works more muscles - we're all in, but how the heck do you do one properly? We covered the basics right here, but because it can be a hard move to truly master (just look at the folks doing them wrong at your local gym), we asked Jackson to pass along some pointers.

First, opt for a bar instead of dumbbells - even if you've got no weight on the bar - to ensure that your grip stays steady and you aren't waving your arms to move the weight. Then you should point your toes straight ahead or slightly outwards. From there, Jackson told us that you should "create a double chin, by pulling the chin back towards your neck and pull your shoulder blades back and down towards the hips and pretend you are squeezing an orange in your arm pits." The next step is the key in the movement: "Simultaneously hinge at the hips and bend at the knees until both hands are gripping the bar (overhand, hook grip) just outside the shins. From here, push through the mid foot and think about driving the hips forward as you stand up straight. Exhale (like you mean it - it's OK to make noise in the gym!) once the bar travels past your knees, being careful not to lean back."

If you nail the deadlift like this and keep it in your regular weekly routine, you'll find that you're sculpting your lower and upper body, while getting stronger and leaner all over. Sounds like it's a good time to do some deadlifts. You can thank us later. Enjoy!

Why You Won't See Game of Thrones Nominated For Any Emmys This Year

The Emmy nominees came out in early July, and will take place on Sept. 17, but there may be a certain blockbuster's cast you'll be looking for and won't see. While you might have been gearing up for another year of Game of Thrones sweeping the award show (since the drama premiered in 2011, it's racked up 38 wins and an astonishing 106 nominations), the cast will be sitting the 2017 ceremony out.

No, the TV academy isn't holding a grudge against Game of Thrones for killing off Hodor, even if we are. Since the season seven premiere date for HBO's fantasy drama was pushed back to July 16, 2017, it means it wasn't eligible to be nominated for any Emmys this year. To qualify, a show has to air within the 2016 to 2017 Emmy period, which is anytime between June 1, 2016, and May 31, 2017 (this year, at least). The last three episodes of season six actually fell within the beginning of that time frame, but due to the academy's "hanging episodes" rule, they were lumped in with the previous episodes of season six.

This might be a crushing blow for any devoted fan hoping to see GOT favorites take home more trophies, but it did open the door for incredible shows that did happen to be eligible this year, like newbies Westworld, Stranger Things, and Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale, who found that best drama category a little more open.

Jim Mattis's "Freeze" on the Transgender Military Ban Isn't as Dramatic as You Think

On Tuesday, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis officially responded to President Donald Trump's memo about the transgender military ban. The current policy, which allows transgender individuals to openly serve, will remain intact pending the results of an important study that Mattis ordered in June, just hours before the Pentagon was set to allow transgender recruits to join the military.

The study would determine the effect of recruiting new transgender individuals and whether it would have a negative impact on the Pentagon's ability to fight and win wars. In an official statement, Mattis explained how the study would impact his decisions going forward. "Once the panel reports its recommendations and following my consultation with the secretary of Homeland Security," he said, "I will provide my advice to the president concerning implementation of his policy direction. In the interim, current policy with respect to currently serving members will remain in place."

This study is not new to the military. In fact, a similar study was conducted before the Pentagon lifted the original ban on transgender service members under the Obama administration. Before doing so, Secretary of Defense Ash Carter conducted a study very much like Mattis's. The difference was, instead of determining the impact recruited troops would have on military readiness, Carter wanted to study the impact current active transgender soldiers would have on the battlefield.

In his official speech announcing the lift of the ban, Carter shared his results. According to RAND, the official research organization for the United States Armed Forced, there would be "minimal readiness impacts from allowing transgender service members to serve openly." In addition to a low impact on duty and deployability, RAND also determined that the medical costs to treat transgender individuals would be "an exceedingly small proportion" of overall expenditures.

As Carter noted in his speech, it's a very large monetary investment to train new soldiers. That's one reason it benefits the military to keep transgender individuals who have gone through full military training and are already serving in the US Armed Forces. And that's why Mattis ordered his study: to determine if new transgender recruits are worth that investment.

In the end, the decision made by Mattis will bide the Pentagon's time, but it's not a direct attack or figurative middle finger to President Trump. Mattis simply will not adopt a policy that detracts from military readiness, and in terms of hard facts and research, the jury is still out. As it currently stands, the lawsuits filed by transgender service members and the ACLU's separate decision to sue are still active. Mattis may just be stalling the inevitable.

Holy Sh*t, This Look at How Game of Thrones Is Made Is Absolutely Insane

It's obvious that there's an incredible amount of work put into each Game of Thrones episode, but this behind-the-scenes look at what each moment actually requires is absolutely wild. HBO offers a peek behind the curtain in its new seven-part series, Game Revealed, which shows the making of each episode. In episode one, a number of cool moments are addressed, including Arya's transformation into Walder Frey, the march of the White Walkers, Ed Sheeran's cameo, that hilarious Samwell Tarly montage, and Daenerys Targaryen's arrival in Westeros. Particularly fascinating is the work behind the Dragonstone set, which creator David Benioff called the "best set" they'd ever built. Check out some of the interesting facts from the episode below, then get all the details on season eight.

  • The Arya/Walder Frey moment: Maisie Williams wore a full-head prosthetic of actor David Bradley's face, and strategic camera angles helped to sell the moment of her reveal.
  • Ed Sheeran's cameo: When Ed saw that he'd be playing a Lannister soldier and Arya would be in the scene, he assumed he'd be killed.
  • Cersei's map room: The map of the Seven Kingdoms that Cersei's seen walking on throughout the season is a hand-painted map. Even cooler? The man seen painting the map during the scene with Cersei and Jaime is actually the graphic artist who designed and created the map.
  • The Sam Tarly montage: Remember Sam's poop-filled montage at the Citadel? It was only about two minutes long, but it took a whopping three and a half days to shoot.
  • Daenerys landing in Westeros: Three different locations were used for the memorable scene.

Evan Peters Is Playing 3 Notorious Cult Leaders on AHS, and We Are Terrified

Since the season seven premiere of American Horror Story is just days away, your nightmares have probably been consumed with images from the new theme: Cult. The official trailer confirms the season deals with the aftermath of the 2016 presidential election, with Sarah Paulson's character, Ally Mayfair, spiraling out of control and Evan Peters's character, Kai Anderson, rising in triumph (the Trump similarity to that word isn't lost on me). In addition to Kai being a cult leader on his own, Peters will also reportedly take on the roles of three other notorious cult leaders in history - Charles Manson, David Koresh, and Jim Jones - as well as one iconic figure who had a large following, Andy Warhol.

The show's creator and executive producer, Ryan Murphy, confirmed that Peters will play these other characters in flashbacks, but we won't see them until at least the fourth episode. Keep reading to dive a little deeper into their terrifying true stories before AHS returns on Tuesday.

This Is the Best Diet to Go On (According to Harvard Researchers)

If you want to lose weight, what's on your plate is often more important than the minutes you spend in the gym. And if you want to see the most change, a 2015 study from Harvard says you should be cutting carbs, not fat.

For the study, published in PLoS One, researchers from Harvard and Brigham and Women's Hospital reviewed 53 randomized trials of over 68,000 patients who had been assigned to either low-fat or low-carb diets. They found that low-carb diets were consistently better at helping patients lose weight than low-fat diets; the participants on the low-carb diets lost 2.5 pounds more than those on low-fat diets, with the average weight loss among all groups at about six pounds.

This latest study on the weight-loss benefits of a low-carb diet adds further evidence that if you want to lose weight, ditching bread - not olive oil - can help you see success. Another recent study, for example, showed that dieters who ate fewer than 40 grams of carbohydrates per day lost about eight pounds more than dieters who were put on a low-fat diet. Other studies have shown that high-carb diets may be the real heart-disease culprit, not saturated fat. All in all, this new review is a good reminder that if you want to lose weight, you should choose a diet rich in healthy fats, lean proteins, and fresh produce. Of course, not all fats are created equal - find out which healthy fats you should be incorporating into your diet here.

20 Photos That Prove Above-the-Elbow Tattoos Are Secretly Sexy

When it comes to deciding to get a tattoo, where you place it is just as important as what you're getting inked. If you're looking for a fresh idea, consider this subtle spot getting more and more popular: above the elbow. There's something a little secretive and sexy about the area - you can't directly see it yourself, nor can others see it when they're facing you. It's the ideal canvas for first-timers (especially if you're thinking of getting a tiny tattoo) and a pleasantly unexpected new spot for those who've tattooed everywhere else.

Bella Hadid jumped on the trend, recently going to celeb favorite Jon Boy for a delicate rosebud tattoo atop her left elbow. For even more inspiration, keep reading. You're going to want to pin these.

Chewable Coffee Gummies Have Arrived, Because Cups Are Overrated

Most people know those types of days when you wake up, struggling to open your eyes, and your first thought is: "Need. Coffee. Now." Call us Lorelai Gilmore, but a morning simply isn't complete without some form of coffee consumption. Not to sound dramatic, but we could use a coffee IV drip most days!

But the thing is, it's not always convenient to drink a mug or two of coffee. Some days you just need to hit the ground running, and a cup can impede productivity. Historically, this has meant just toughing out morning slumps, but not anymore; now, you can just chew your coffee instead. Enter: Go Cubes, a form of chewable coffee gummies. Two Go Cubes gummies contain the caffeine equivalent of a cup of joe, but they're about the size of marshmallows.

According to a Go Cubes review from Spoon University, they have a texture similar to that of Sour Patch Kids, but they taste just like a mocha, latte, or plain ol' drip coffee depending on which flavor you buy. They also don't have the same staining effect on your teeth and claim to cut out some of the caffeine jitters.

If You Don't Have an Iron, Here's How You Can Dewrinkle Clothes With a Hair Dryer

Regardless of what packing hacks you put to the test, chances are that your garments will come out with some wrinkles. Since most of us don't usually have an iron on hand, you may want to consider always traveling with a hair dryer like Sonia Gil of YouTube channel soniastravels.

If you need a quick fix in-between destinations or your hotel room doesn't provide an iron, a blow dryer can smooth creases in seconds. The better the quality of the dryer, the more effective it will be. Simply turn it on to the highest and hottest settings, pull your shirt down, and work the dryer across the wrinkles. Just make sure to be careful - the actual hair dryer shouldn't make contact with your clothing, because it can burn the fabric. Keep it a few centimeters away! Sonia notes that it won't iron out an entire suit, for example, but it is a quick and easy solution when you don't have the proper tools.

Set Your Alarms Now: The iPhone 8 Is Coming in Early September

It's almost that time of year, where you empty out your savings and spend it all on one thing - and we're not talking about the holidays. The new iPhone 8 (or whatever Apple decides to call it) is officially going to be announced on Sept. 12. Apple sent out invites on Aug. 31 and is also set to release the iPhone 7S and 7S Plus, a new Apple Watch with LTE, and a 4K Apple TV.

According to various reports, the new iPhone 8 will cost about $1,000 and include the following features: a larger screen, no home button, wireless charging, and facial recognition. The new iPhone 8 might also come in a copper-blush finish instead of rose-gold. You can expect all new iPhones to come with iOS 11, new emoji, and other handy features.

Despite releasing the Apple Watch Series 2 last year, the company is going to announce yet another new Apple Watch model that has LTE capabilities. This means you finally won't need to carry your iPhone around for the Apple Watch to receive notifications and more.

But these are all rumors, and Apple could very much surprise us in the end and do none of these things or all of them. For now, you'll have to stay tuned on Sept. 12 and watch the livestream to see what exactly the company unveils.

Queen Elizabeth II Offers Her Condolences to Victims of Hurricane Harvey

There has been an outpouring of support from celebrities following the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Harvey in Texas. Queen Elizabeth II is now offering her condolences to the victims, releasing a heartfelt statement late Friday night. "I was deeply saddened to learn of the loss of life and the devastation following the recent terrible floods caused by Hurricane Harvey," she wrote. The queen went on to say that her "thoughts and prayers" were with those affected. Read her full letter of condolences ahead.

I was deeply saddened to learn of the loss of life and the devastation following the recent terrible floods caused by Hurricane Harvey.

Prince Philip and I send our sincere condolences to the victims of this disaster, to those who have lost loved ones, and to those who have seen their homes and property destroyed. My thoughts and prayers are with those affected.

So, What Are Prince William and Kate Middleton's Jobs, Exactly?

We've been seeing a lot more of Prince William and Kate Middleton in the past year because, as senior members of the royal family, they have been stepping up their duties and taking on more work; but what exactly do they do? Their roles can be broken down into four key areas, which we're doing right here.

Charity Work

A large part of a senior royal's life is spent being involved with the charities they are patron of. This will involve the stuff that we hear about: public visits, annual award ceremonies, glamorous fundraisers, and recorded messages, and those that we don't: private visits, update meetings with charity heads, and personal correspondence. William and Kate know their charities inside and out. They are required to understand why the charity exists and who it benefits, how it benefits them, and what needs to be done in the future. Their team will pull together everything there is to know and will brief them. William also came up with the notion of The Forum, where twice a year the heads of his, Kate's, and Harry's charities meet to discuss ways they can work together. Additionally, the royal trio have their own charity: The Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. It was set up by William and Harry in 2009, and the title changed to accommodate Kate after the royal wedding. The Foundation is an umbrella charity that operates by kick-starting certain projects and casting light on others, and it means William, Kate and Harry have funds to distribute as they wish.

Caring For Society

Another big part of the royals' role is basically using their status to make the most vulnerable people feel recognized and heard. Whenever the unimaginable happens and threatens the very fabric of a local community, usually a key member of the royal family will visit those affected. After the London Bridge terror attacks in June 2017, Kate met survivors and the medical teams who worked with them at nearby King's College Hospital, and just days later, after the Grenfell Tower fire, William (along with the queen) met with survivors and first responders at a nearby rescue center. These visits do three things: they make those who have been worst-affected feel listened to, they draw media attention to important issues, and they help the visiting royal party try to understand what people are going through.

Representing Their Country

Neither politicians nor diplomats, and yet with elements of both, the Royal Family are employed to be sparkling ambassadors for their country. This area covers overseas tours, state visits from overseas dignitaries (from formal Buckingham Palace banquets to at-home hospitality), key anniversaries (such as the centenary of the Battle of Passchendaele in July 2017), signing condolence books (such as after the Paris terror attack in 2015 and the Orlando shooting in 2016), and the annual diplomatic reception at Buckingham Palace every Christmas. Behind the scenes, there is a great deal to learn about the relationships between countries, and the socio-economic, cultural, religious, and political nuances of the countries whose heads of state they will be encountering, so William and Kate will keep themselves up to date with current affairs and attend more briefings.

Maintaining the Institution of the Royal Family

When it comes to the breakdown of their time, this part is perhaps the smallest of William and Kate's job description, and yet it is vital for the continuation of of the monarchy. Again, behind the scenes, there is paperwork to be read and briefings to attend, and publicly their presence is required at ceremonial events such as Trooping the Colour, Garter Day, church services, key anniversaries, Royal Ascot, and St. Patrick's Day with the Irish Guards.

Additionally, since the retirement of his grandfather Prince Philip, William will increasingly step up his royal duties in support of the queen, and either he or Prince Charles will be by her side in place of her husband - as we've already seen with when Charles accompanied the queen to the State Opening of Parliament earlier this year.

38 Times Prince Harry Was Out-of-Control Cute With Kids

The royal family loves spending time with children, but of them all, Prince Harry has become known for creating an instant rapport with the youngsters he meets. From babies to young teens, he has his mother's knack of instinctively knowing what is needed, whether that's a cuddle, a bit of rough and tumble, or some gentle teasing. Prince Harry's sense of fun may have gotten him in trouble in the past, but it is also the key to his special relationship with kids. We're taking a look at some of the many times he has been utterly adorable with the children he encounters.

Princess Diana's Precious Childhood Photos Will Put a Huge Smile on Your Face

Princess Diana was born on July 1, 1961. Though she came from a family of British nobility with royal ancestry, her upbringing wasn't exactly an easy one. Diana's parents divorced when she was 7, and her mom left her and her three siblings with their father, who remarried without telling them. As a young girl, she lived at Park House on the royal family's Sandringham estate, and in 1975, she became Lady Diana Spencer after her father inherited the title of Lord Spencer and moved the family to Althorp, the Spencer estate in Northampton, England. From there, she was shipped off to boarding schools, where she became insecure, unstable, and withdrawn.

Long before she met and married Prince Charles and became the Princess of Wales, Diana was a bright child who, despite not being that great of a student, excelled in the arts, including ballet and piano. She loved animals and owned a handful of pets, including a pony and a guinea pig. After her tragic death in August 1997, Diana was returned to the place she grew up and is now buried at the family estate in Althorp. We've rounded up the sweetest photos from Diana's childhood - keep reading to see the little girl who would one day grow up to be the People's Princess.

The Biggest Financial Mistake Most American Couples Make

For whatever reason, talking about money still makes people more squeamish than talking about anything else - including sex. Yet the biggest mistake most couples will make is avoiding the topic of finances altogether.

According to LearnVest's Money Habits and Confessions Survey, less than half of Americans (44 percent) are comfortable discussing their personal finances with their significant other, and one in five Americans (20 percent) never have these serious conversations with their partner at all. The topic is so fraught, in fact, that 68 percent of Americans surveyed said that money is more a source of tension with their partner than their sex life. Thus, many people simply keep their partners in the dark about their money matters: nearly a third of (32 percent) don't know their partner's salary and 31 percent are unaware of how much their partner has in the bank.

True, money is a decidedly unsexy topic of conversation, and you might think talking about it isn't that integral to the health of a relationship, but in fact, bad financial habits can spell doom for an otherwise good romance. One in four Americans claim they have broken up with a significant other over money issues, while an impressive 58 percent would prefer to be single forever than be married to someone who was financially irresponsible.

Take a look a the infographic below and then find some time to talk money with your honey - the future of your relationship could depend on it!

I Deleted Facebook From My Phone and It Changed My Life For the Better

A few weeks ago, I made the spontaneous decision to delete the Facebook and Instagram apps from my phone. I didn't delete my accounts, as I still use them for work, but I put my personal use of the apps to rest. I wasn't inspired by any article or study to do so; I just couldn't keep scrolling any longer. In the decade I've owned an iPhone, I noticed my habits have changed drastically - for the worse. I became addicted to my Facebook app, checking it the second I woke up (resulting in an hour of use), in every spare moment, and sometimes for hours after work. After I had overdone it with depressing news on FB, I'd turn to Instagram, scrolling until I'd become nauseated from the motion and images of friends and celebrities living their best lives, looking healthier and happier than me. So I quit cold turkey. I didn't know what would happen or how I'd feel, but I figured surely it would be better than the current state of affairs. Here's what I've noticed:

I don't miss it.

I wondered if I'd experience a withdrawal, but I haven't. I work in a media company and feared I'd miss major headlines if I didn't stay glued to social media. Truth is, I'm still in the know, no FB or Instagram on my phone needed. Better yet, I feel like my eyes and ears are more open to listening to what people on the streets are talking about and what issues my friends and family care about. I'm able to be engaged with but not engulfed by the news.

Every time I opened Instagram, I used to have this anxiety like I wasn't really living life if I didn't post a memory publicly on Instagram. Not spending hours looking at other people's lives has freed me up to actually live my own life without the worry that the memory is worthy of a photograph.

I feel so much more at peace.

Without social media, I noticed how much broader the real world is. My eyes are open to the actual world around me, not some algorithm that funnels news and pictures it knows I'll click on. This actually gives me a lot more peace and hope for humanity. Less news exposure means less paranoia. I don't have to compare or condemn myself. Instead, I can spend my energy offering love and support to those around me, which makes me feel happier rather than paralyzed by fear.

I'm spending spare time on healthy activities.

I recently learned transcendental meditation, and so now, instead of panicking about headlines the moment I wake up, I sit quietly for 20 minutes to ground myself for the day. I'm able to leave the house centered and aware of my breath rather than feeling like a frazzled shell of a person. I've started eating meals away from screens. I'm listening to positive and uplifting podcasts while I cook or clean my house (special shout-out to Tara Brach's mindfulness podcast). If I watch TV, it's all about comedies.

I've had such a positive experience getting rid of my social media apps, so I can't say I'm going to be compelled to redownload them anytime soon. I'm happily working on getting my zen on, being a kinder, more loving human, and counting down the days until the next election.

Baby Was Born in Front Seat of Car in Its Own Amniotic Sac - and It's the Definition of a Miracle

Giving birth in a car is incredibly rare, and a baby born en caul happens fewer than once every 80,000 births - they typically only ever occur in the most carefully controlled C-sections because the amniotic sac is so delicate. So giving birth to a baby in the front seat of your car while your partner is driving to the hospital and then looking down to see the newborn nestled entirely within its own sac has got to be impossible.

Not so for Raelin Scurry.

At just 29 weeks pregnant, she felt what she thought were Braxton Hicks contractions, but after 45 minutes of consistent pain, she decided to have her fiancé, Ean, drive her to the hospital.

"The contractions continued to get closer together and more intense, and before I knew it, I knew it was time to push," she wrote on Instagram. "I called 911 because I was so scared. They couldn't understand me between the screams with contractions."

She handed the phone to Ean and pulled her pants off. When she reached down, "sure enough," she felt the baby's head.

"I pushed one time and my miracle baby was here," she wrote. "When I looked down I realized he was still completely wrapped in the amniotic sac."

Her fiancé was still driving at this point, and although the 911 dispatcher instructed them to pull over, Raelin knew they'd get to the hospital quicker. They kept driving.

"I was so scared - at first the baby was still and all I could do was pray he would be OK," she admitted. Then, through the sac, she connected. "I rubbed his face with my thumb and he pulled his little hands and feet up to his face as if he understood my prayers and wanted to reassure us he was OK."

For the next seven minutes, until they pulled up to the hospital, her baby boy remained in the delicate sac.

"I let the doctors open it when we got to there - they opened it right outside of the hospital," Raelin told POPSUGAR. "I knew he wouldn't be able to breathe on his own with him being so early, so I left him in there."

Thanks to her incredible instincts, her premature newborn, who was born at just over three pounds, is "doing wonderful, all things considered."

Raelin added, "After all he went through, I know he's going to be an awesome little man. He is truly a miracle baby."

The Badass Move Princess Diana Pulled After Finding Out About Charles's Affair

Prince Charles and Princess Diana's 11-year marriage was fraught with scandals, affairs, and, well, the fact that they weren't really all that in love to begin with. But after the birth of Prince Harry in 1984, Diana experienced what she called "some of the happiest years of her life" as a wife and mother - sadly, it didn't last too long. In 1986, Prince Charles rekindled his pre-Diana romance with Camilla Parker Bowles, a relationship that first started back in the early '70s. According to interviews and conversations with friends, Diana never believed that Charles and Camilla had fully broken things off; she even alleged to have found photos of Camilla in Charles's journal during their honeymoon and made the famous statement of there being "three of us" in the marriage, telling Martin Bashir in 1995, "It was a bit crowded."

In Andrew Morton's controversial biography Diana: Her True Story, first published in 1992, Diana recalled "one of the bravest moments" of her marriage - a calculated confrontation with Camilla herself at a 40th birthday party for Camilla's sister, of all places. The year was 1989, and Diana decided that, after putting the pieces together and realizing that Charles and Camilla were carrying on an affair, she would turn up at the event unannounced and talk to Camilla face to face, once and for all.

Nobody knew Diana was going to show up - she wasn't even invited - and in a truly badass move, the princess interrupted a conversation between Camilla, Charles, and another male guest to speak to Camilla. She looked "really uncomfortable and put her head down," and Diana continued: "OK, boys, I'm just going to have a quick word with Camilla and I'll be up in a minute." The two men "shot upstairs like chickens with no heads," Diana said, adding, "I could feel, upstairs, all hell breaking loose - 'What is she going to do?'"

What Diana did was exactly what she planned to do. Though she admitted to being "terrified" of Camilla, Diana recalled staying "deathly calm." "The voice inside me had said, 'just go for it,'" she said in a taped conversation. "I said, 'I know what's going on between you and Charles and I just want you to know that.'" The princess called Camilla's reply "very interesting": "She said to me, 'You've got everything you ever wanted. You've got all the men in the world fall in love with you and you've got two beautiful children, what more do you want?'" "So I said, 'I want my husband,'" Diana said. "I said to Camilla, 'I'm sorry I'm in the way . . . and it must be hell for both of you. But I do know what's going on. Don't treat me like an idiot.'"

The aftermath from Diana and Camilla's standoff was swift. Diana said that after the party, Prince Charles "was over me like a bad rash, and I cried like I have never cried before," and that in the days after the confrontation there was a "tremendous shift" in their relationship. In frustration, Diana began her own string of extramarital affairs until she and Charles eventually separated, then divorced at the behest of Queen Elizabeth II. The couple managed to stay civil while co-parenting their sons until Diana's tragic death in August 1997. Prince Charles and Camilla were married in 2005.
