The Grisly Facts of the Menendez Brothers' Murder Case, Nearly 28 Years Later

This year marks 28 years since Erik and Lyle Menendez brutally murdered their mother and father in the family's Southern California home, putting the wheels in motion for one of the most infamous trials of the 20th century. ABC drudged up the disturbing case for a primetime special, Truth and Lies: The Menéndez Brothers - American Sons, American Murderers, back in January, Lifetime revived the story in June with the movie Menendez: Blood Brothers, and this month comes Law & Order True Crime - The Menendez Murders. On the off-chance that you're not familiar with the case, here's a brief overview of the very complicated crime.

Who Are the Menendez Brothers?

Joseph Lyle and Erik Galen, born in 1968 and 1970 respectively, were children of privilege. Their father José worked his way up the corporate ladder to become the CEO of the (now defunct) film studio LIVE Entertainment. Their mother, Mary Louise "Kitty" Andersen, was a stay-at-home mother. The family lived in Chicago and New Jersey before relocating to the affluent suburb of Calabasas, CA, in 1987. Lyle got into Princeton, but was suspended after being accused of plagiarism. Both boys - who were unusually close - were bred to be tennis pros, and their father pushed them to be the best.

The Murders

On the night of Aug. 20, 1989, José and Kitty were relaxing in their den, watching the James Bond flick The Spy Who Loved Me. Lyle and Erik ambushed them from behind, shooting José in the back of the head and crippling Kitty with a gunshot wound to the leg when she tried to run. They shot her so many times that her face was unrecognizable by the time police arrived on the scene. Because of their father's alleged ties to organized crime, the brothers tried to make it look like a mob hit by shooting out their parents' kneecaps. After the deed was done, they went to the movies and met up with some friends to provide an alibi. Later that night, Lyle called the police, screaming that someone had killed his parents.

The Aftermath

While investigators initially had no reason to suspect Erik and Lyle, the brothers started exhibiting strange behavior for people whose parents had been recently murdered. Lyle went on a spending spree, buying a Porsche and a buffalo wings restaurant in New Jersey. Erik went to Israel to compete in tennis tournaments. They went on extravagant trips together, racking up over half a million dollars in purchases in the months after their parents' deaths. Unable to take the guilt, Erik confessed to the murder in a session with his psychiatrist. The psychiatrist's girlfriend overheard the conversation, and went to the police when the relationship fell apart. The brothers were arrested in March of 1990.

The Trial

In the courtroom, Lyle and Erik showed little remorse for what they'd done. A damning piece from the LA Times detailed, "The brothers, appearing at a series of evidentiary hearings in recent weeks, have appeared at ease, smiling at their girlfriends and relatives who show up for support." However, as more and more evidence began to pile up, the unbelievable truth came out. They had gotten the idea to kill their parents from the movie The Billionaire Boys Club. Erik had even written a screenplay with his friend; the movie was about a rich kid who murders his parents to inherit their fortune. The brothers searched for a pitiable motive, alleging that their father molested them. The juries (one for Lyle and one for Erik) failed to agree on a verdict, resulting in a mistrial.

While the first trial was highly publicized thanks to the new channel CourtTV (aka TruTV), the second trial gained far less attention. Another reason the Menendez brothers fell out of the public eye? America had moved onto another high-profile murder case: that of O.J. Simpson, who had been accused of killing Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. While the public had lost much of their initial interest in the brothers, Erik and Lyle were convicted and sentenced to life in prison in 1996. Their appeals have been denied, and they have no chance of parole.

Lyle Menendez is currently serving his time at the Mule Creek State Prison in California, while Erik is residing 200 miles away in a cell in the Pleasant Valley State Prison.

Law & Order True Crime - The Menendez Murders premieres on Sept. 26.

3 Invaluable Lessons I Learned From Working at Kate Spade Right Out of College

I can still vividly remember the moment I landed the job. Working for Kate Spade New York had always been a dream of mine, so the morning I received the phone call informing me of the offer, my heart practically burst with excitement. Here I was just a month after graduating from college, in a new city many states away from my hometown, officially entering the "real" world. Even after the endless networking, friendly follow-ups, and one-too-many nights scouring LinkedIn for openings, I'm still not completely sure how the stars aligned so well at the time.

As I reflect back on the two and a half years I spent working at Kate Spade, I cannot help but smile from nostalgia. Yes, those months were packed with crisp color, playful prints, and countless Champagne celebrations, but they were also filled with late nights, long hours, and bucketfuls of hard work. My time at Kate Spade not only opened my eyes to the corporate world and fashion industry but also taught me all about carving my own career path. Below are three invaluable lessons I learned by working at the headquarters of Kate Spade New York right out of college.

1. Company culture can matter more than compensation.

Working at Kate Spade taught me just how valuable positive company culture can be when it comes to your own happiness in the workplace. The company spent a lot of time and effort creating a welcoming culture, which resulted in an encouraging and empowering atmosphere throughout the entire office. Although I was in an entry-level position, I always felt appreciated and valued, which kept me motivated to consistently put my best foot forward when it came to my work and productivity. While my entry-level position came with an entry-level salary, the good vibes and culture around the office made me content with the numbers on my paycheck. From the company celebrations to the out-of-office gatherings and team-building exercises, I enjoyed the people I was working with and learning from, which ultimately increased my loyalty to the company.

Nowadays, I not only look at job descriptions when looking for a role but also heavily research a company's culture. Since most jobs today aren't the average 9-to-5, it is critical to find a place where you feel like you belong. Feeling "at home" at a company where you will spend much of your day can be worth so much more than your actual salary.

2. Networking beyond your department will lead to greater success.

During my time at Kate Spade, my position was in Merchandising, where I worked heavily with the Design, Buying, and Product Development teams. Not a day passed when there wasn't some sort of crossfunctional communication. However, by working for a company that grand in size, I quickly realized just how many other departments made up the brand. From Marketing and Public Relations to Finance, Human Resources, and Learning and Development, I yearned to know more about how each of these teams functioned and what their day-to-day roles entailed.

So, I took the initiative to reach out to employees - many whom I had never met - to see if they'd be interested in grabbing coffee to simply chat. Not only did these talks allow me to learn firsthand how each department was a critical slice in the company pie, but it also presented me with the opportunity to network and meet new faces of the brand. Ultimately, these casual coffee chats were what opened many new doors for me in my career.

3. You must accept when it's time to move on.

My time at Kate Spade was definitely an exciting chapter in my life. Although this period had its fair share of stressful and chaotic moments, I am thankful for the fast-paced environment and the many ups and downs, as I was able to grow both professionally and as an individual. Most of all, I am thankful for all the inspiration. By working alongside such talented and creative people, my own creativity blossomed. So much so, in fact, that I ultimately realized it was time to move on.

As much as I cared for my coworkers, I knew deep down in my heart I was in the wrong role. Merchandising was just not for me. After continuously observing all the passion people were bringing to their roles each day, it became clear to me that I did not have that level of enthusiasm when it came to my own work. And it was because of the many "coffee chats" that my eyes opened to this realization so quickly. Through these talks, I learned about new departments, new possibilities for my career, and new opportunities. I recognized that figuring out what you want to do with "the rest of your life" takes time, and you won't have all the answers right after college. There will be a lot of trial and error - and that's OK! What's important is accepting when it's time to move on, even if that means leaving what was once your "dream job."

So while saying goodbye to the colorful, inspiring world of Kate Spade was bittersweet, it was because of the confidence I gained during my time at the company that I had the courage to find the right path for me.

What I Wish I Had Done Differently in My Bathroom Reno

These days, blogger Tanya of Dans Le Lakehouse is a pro home DIYer - but she was just a home-remodeling novice when she embarked on her first bathroom reno.

Several years after the dust settled on the project, Tanya looked back objectively on what worked and what fell flat. What she discovered? It's easy to get bogged down in the thousands of tiny decisions associated with a remodel and wind up making some big mistakes.

Do your research and learn from her experience by reading her full bathroom reno story on her blog and checking out our summary of Tanya's takeaways below.

If she had to do it again, Tanya would . . .

Hire Out the Big Work

Since she had never tackled a bathroom reno before, Tanya wisely hired out the bathtub replacement and tile surround. Having everything installed quickly and correctly was worth the extra money.

Get a Soaking Tub and Removable Shower Head

These little luxuries yielded big rewards in terms of comfort and convenience to Tanya, making them worth any extra expense.

Consider Tiling Options More Carefully

In a time crunch and overwhelmed with options, Tanya didn't bother to swap the boring white tiles that came with her bathroom package for something more stylish, like subway tiles. As a result, she forever hated the tiles in her new bathroom.

Add Some Kind of Storage Nook Into Shower

It wasn't until the shower was installed that Tanya noticed its ledge-less design left nowhere to put soap. She wishes she had been upsold on a cubby or nook in the shower so razors, shampoo, and basic bath products had somewhere to go. To solve the problem, she frustratingly had to stick an ugly suction soap dispenser on the shower wall.

Not Get a Marble Countertop

As beautiful and expensive-looking as the marble countertop on the vanity was, Tanya's love for it quickly dissolved into hate. Everything - even water - stained it, and it required lots of care, cleaning, and special maintenance products.

Install Attractive Vinyl Flooring

While vinyl flooring wasn't the sexiest material or best choice for home resale value, it worked great for Tanya and she still supports her decision to install it. She found an attractive upscale design and says it was easy to install, affordable to purchase, and super easy to clean.

Pay More Attention to Finishes

Tanya's vanity came with brushed hardware, but they unwittingly chose polished chrome for the sink. Not one to mix metals, Tanya says she wishes she had given more attention to coordinating the finishes.

Buy Higher-Quality Cabinetry

The affordable melamine cabinetry that came with the modular vanity set (vanity, hardware, sink, and counter sold as a packaged deal) seemed like a value at the time, but it couldn't stand up to the humidity in the bathroom and started showing wear quickly.

Avoid Vanities on Legs

Loving the repurposed-dresser look, Tanya opted to leave the toe kick off her vanity. She's regretted this decision since the first time she had to get on the bathroom floor to squeeze an arm and rag beneath the vanity.

Only Pick What She Loved

When it came to certain room elements, like the vanity, Tanya played it safe with a classic white, shaker style, picking with future homebuyers' tastes in mind. But she found she disliked the lackluster vanity the whole time she was in the house, preferring something more modern. While she wouldn't throw future buyers' tastes to the wind, she would pick with a focus on her own tastes next time.

Start Binging American Horror Story on Netflix Now - It Might Disappear

While you might already be obsessing over American Horror Story: Cult thanks to season seven's wild (and WTF) premiere, there's a lingering question about season six that still has yet to be answered: when is American Horror Story: Roanoke coming to Netflix? Well, we have some bad news.

Season six might not have been the best season from the horror anthology, but for anyone who doesn't have a cable subscription, it's probably felt like it's been quite some time since fresh AHS episodes have arrived on the streaming network. Right now, Netflix has the first five seasons of the show only - Murder House, Asylum, Coven, Freak Show, and Hotel - with no Roanoke in sight. While previous seasons have typically been added a few months after they air on FX, it looks like season six, season seven, and beyond won't make an appearance on the site unless FX strikes up a new deal with Netflix.

Over the past few years, it's seemed like the streaming giant has had a rolling yearly contract with FX. Now that Fox has cut ties with Netflix and started pulling all of its programming, it would make sense that FX's shows won't be far behind. According to the following tweet from the popular (but deeply unofficial) AHS news source @ahsleak, seasons of the show will be gradually leaving Netflix between Oct. 3 and Dec. 6.

An official announcement about FX's choice to pull American Horror Story from Netflix has yet to be made, but it's probably wise not to expect to be able to stream Roanoke anytime soon (unless of course you get the FX app).

The 1 Thing Congress Actually Agrees on? Self-Driving Cars, Apparently

A future where self-driving cars are more common than human drivers might not be as far off as you'd think - and somehow, it appears to be the one thing that Congress can agree on. The US House of Representatives passed the Safely Ensuring Lives Future Deployment and Research in Vehicle Evolution (SELF DRIVE) Act on Sept. 6, clearing the path for regulation of self-driving car manufacturers. The bill, which now needs to pass the Senate, includes several provisions that lift restrictions on self-driving cars.

The SELF DRIVE Act includes the following provisions:

  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) can now regulate a vehicle's design, construction and performance, but still allows states to come up with rules on a self-driving car's registration, licensing, liability, insurance, and so on.
  • It allows the NHTSA to grant 25,000 exemptions to companies to put self-driving cars on the road, and gradually increasing that number to 100,000 exemptions in three years.
  • Manufacturers are required to come up with a privacy plan that will let people know exactly how a company plans on collecting, using, and sharing the rider's data.

The bill passed unanimously and with bipartisan support. "The future of the automobile is here and this bill will give the automotive industry the tools it needs to completely revolutionize how we will get around for decades to come," Michigan Representative Rep Fred Upton said. Upton is right; Google first began testing self-driving cars in 2010 and on Sept. 7, ride-sharing company Lyft and and Drive.ai announced a partnership to start a pilot program of self-driving car rides in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee are also discussing and coming up with their own bill around self-driving car regulations. For now, you might want to reconsider that everything you thought was far off in the future may already be here.

These Are the 13 Foods a Dietitian Insists Her Clients Eat For Weight Loss

A big chunk of weight loss success has to do with your diet, so it makes sense to get advice from an expert on healthy eating. We asked certified dietitian Leslie Langevin, MS, RD, CD, of Whole Health Nutrition to share the top foods she recommends to clients who are trying to slim down.

  1. Zucchini: Leslie told POPSUGAR this veggie is the perfect noodle replacement to keep carbs and calories low. She recommends spiralizing and sautéing zoodles in garlic and a little olive oil for the best flavor. Get this: it's 25 calories a cup vs. 200 calories for regular pasta!
  2. Avocados/olive oil: Leslie says healthy fats are essential for weight loss because they "keep us full and satisfied since they are digested slower than carbohydrates." Avocados are rich in fiber as well, which will also help with satiety. Spread some on toast, add it to smoothies, or use it as a butter replacement.
  3. Sweet potatoes: These are rich in fiber, vitamin A, and complex carbohydrates to help balance blood sugar levels. Enjoy baked sweet potatoes for breakfast topped with almond butter and banana, or add roasted cubes to salads or Buddha bowls. She recommends keeping portions to one cup a day.
  4. Eggs: "Eggs are high in protein so they keep hunger in check and keep blood sugar levels steady," Leslie said. Hard boil a dozen on Sunday so you have them for the week.
  1. Oats: High in B vitamins and rich in complex carbs, oats, particularly steel cut or rolled, are also a great source of filling fiber, and "eating lots of fiber can help with weight loss."
  2. Nuts and seeds: Nuts and seeds, such as almonds, walnuts, cashews, and sunflower seeds, are great snacks for weight loss since most are high in good fats, protein, and fiber. "These keep you full and satisfied so you can avoid processed, unfilling snacks!" Leslie told POPSUGAR.
  3. Flaxseed and chia seeds:: These little seeds are rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and just a tiny portion will fill you up, thanks to the solid amount of soluble fiber. Try sprinkling them in smoothies or on top of oatmeal, or add them to baked goods or pancake batter to help you stay fuller for longer. For breakfast or dessert, try this gingerbread chia seed pudding. However, Leslie advises you start slow, as eating fiber takes time to get used to. "Start at one teaspoon per day and move up to one tablespoon," she suggested. Also keep in mind that flaxseed needs to be ground to absorbed into the body efficiently.
  4. Berries:: An excellent source of fiber and antioxidants, fruits like blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries have the lowest amount of sugar, which is great for losing weight. Blueberries have also been shown to reduce belly fat.
  1. Cauliflower: This low-carb veggie can be used in so many ways: as a rice substitute, an easy pizza crust, or mashed potatoes. You can find it frozen and riced to save time. There is even a frozen low-carb, gluten-free cauliflower pizza crust on the market to make weight loss easy.
  1. Beans: An easy source of complex carbs, Leslie says "beans are rich in fiber, B vitamins, and protein" - everything you need to support weight loss. The fiber especially is "helpful for weight loss and keeping full." Throw beans in your blender when you make smoothies, mash them in your oatmeal, add them to salads and soups, or roast them for a healthy snack.
  2. Greens: Greens, like kale, spinach, lettuce, and Swiss chard, are rich in vitamins C and A, as well as folate and magnesium, which can help with proper digestion. Greens are incredibly nutrient-dense and packed with fiber to help keep you full. Leslie said, "With about 15 calories per cup you can really eat as much as you want!" Enjoy greens in a salad or blend them in your smoothie if you're not into eating them with a fork.
  3. Greek yogurt: This protein-rich snack can keep hunger at bay between meals, and probiotics can help with digestion and belly bloat. If you don't eat dairy, go for almond or soy yogurt.
  4. Dark chocolate: Leslie believes that everyone needs a treat! "Dark chocolate is low in sugar and high in antioxidants, and having a sweet treat planned in your day can prevent binges later on!"

Whoa! These Marvel Images Are Trippy AF

Any Marvel fan can tell you just how much they love the franchise in any form - especially when it comes to full-scale illustrations of their favorite characters. One artist turned his portraits of Marvel characters into GIFs that are so subtle, you can barely tell they're moving images.

The artist, Mike Mitchell, originally created these pieces of art for a show that ran last year at the Mondo Gallery in Texas. They are completely stunning and definitely capture his feelings for Marvel. "This has easily been the most ambitious project I've ever taken on, and it's due in part to my love for their universe; which is fictional by definition, but real in my mind and in the minds of others," he said to Mondo Tees. It definitely touches fans, considering Mitchell's artwork first made the rounds on Reddit in 2014 and was rising on Imgur a few months ago.

Look ahead and become entranced by these amazing Marvel GIFs - you won't be able to look away.

Harry Is the Perfect Prince Charming as He High-Fives a Baby in Belfast

Prince Harry was on fine form on Thursday when he made an appearance in Belfast. There were funny faces aplenty as the prince greeted the assembled crowds and posed for pictures. He was even filmed giving an adorable baby a slow-mo high five, just one of the many times he has melted our hearts whilst hanging out with kids. On encountering a group of older children in the crowd, he quickly pointed out that they should be in school, laughing with them as he called them out. Read on to see that high-five moment, plus plenty of photos from Harry's trip to Northern Ireland.

Emma Roberts Isn't the Only American Horror Story Costar Evan Peters Has Fallen For

Evan Peters is one of the biggest heartthrobs on American Horror Story, but when it comes to his real-life romances, his dating history is actually pretty small. While the 30-year-old actor is known for his on-again, off-again romance with Emma Roberts, she certainly isn't the only star he's fallen for over the years. In fact, he actually dated one of his Murder House costars way before the series even began. See all the lucky ladies who have been able to call Evan their boyfriend.

I Took a Solo Road Trip, and Here's What I Learned

I wasn't exactly planning on taking a road trip from basically the Canadian border to the Mexican border, but that's what happened.

I had to be in Minot, ND, for business and Phoenix, AZ, for a wedding both in the same month. As much as I wanted to take two separate trips, there was no way around it. Between family events, budgets, and deadlines, my choices were to make it one trip . . . or miss the wedding. Only one of those was an option. So, off I went and I began to plan what ended up being the trip of a lifetime.

On this trip, I met real cowboys, saw the amazing terrain of the US, ate new things, saw new things, got smoked by a woman in a prairie-style dress (and she was probably as old as my grandmother), and drove on a literal dirt road that was considered a county road (with trucks passing me on the other side). Here are a few things that I learned.

Help! We've Fallen Madly in Love With Japan's Sakura McFloat

Just in time for cherry blossom season, McDonald's Japan has added a dazzling Sakura McFloat to its menu. The pink drink consists of cherry soda topped with a dollop of vanilla ice cream. In addition, the fast-food chain also released a Sakura McFizz, which is simply the cherry soda without the ice cream.

It's worth noting that both drinks have been around for several years, however, it's likely that McDonald's is just reintroducing them on a limited basis for Spring. According to a few blogs, the Sakura McFizz had previously existed with a decidedly different flavor! Instead, that older McFizz was made up of Sprite and Ribena, a blackcurrant-based soda.

After looking at its many incarnations on Instagram, we can't help but hope that the Sakura McFloat makes a stateside appearance. In the meantime, we'll keep ogling. Ahead, feel free to do the same by checking out pictures of the McFloat and McFizz.

Outlander Stars Hint at the Big Changes Ahead For Brianna and Roger in Season 3

The Droughtlander is almost over, Outlander fans. To prepare for the upcoming third season, I sat down with stars Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin, who joined the Starz drama at the end of season two as Brianna Randall and Roger Wakefield, respectively. In speaking with me, the two actors definitely wanted to convey how incredible it has been to join a show with such a devoted fan base - a fan base they want to honor with their performances.

"The fans are crazy vocal, crazy passionate, they're so committed to the show," Rankin said. "It's their baby for a lot of them, especially those who have been reading it for the last 20 years. I think it's important to respect their idea of the show, of these characters."

For Skelton, getting to meet fans in person at San Diego Comic-Con this year was a particularly special treat, especially since she's been getting to chat with them online since being cast. "That's the beautiful thing about social media, we interact with them a lot, don't we?" she said. "It was so nice and so rewarding, because they really are invested in the characters. As an actor, you're so defensive of your character, because you're really in their head, so you love them no matter, but it's lovely to see the fans have the same feeling for them."

"They're a very intelligent and articulate fan base as well," Rankin added. "You can really get a good debate going with them if you want to."

When it comes to Outlander, there are definitely plenty of things to debate, especially among book readers. So we had to ask - have Skelton and Rankin read the books, or as actors, did they prefer not to?

"Wait, there's books?" Rankin deadpanned, holding his poker face so long that we actually thought he might be serious for a second. But yes, there are nine books in Diana Gabaldon's bestselling series, and Rankin and Skelton have both read it . . . up to a point. They told us that the books were immensely helpful in getting a feel for their characters.

"Getting into the casting process, we were really fortunate to have hard access to such rich resource materials, so I stated reading them once I got involved in casting for Roger," Rankin revealed. "I read through The Fiery Cross, which is book five, to get an idea of what he's all about, get an idea of the essence of this guy. I wanted to really know what Roger is about, what makes him tick, try and discover more about what he is like as a person. It's really lucky to have that."

However, the actors have chosen not to read too far ahead in the series for a very important reason.

"You don't want to read too far ahead because the image of that person in, say, book seven is a very different person than they were in book two, so if you go too far ahead, you're going to subconsciously let bits of personality they haven't gotten yet seep into the performance and you don't want that," Skelton explained. "It's reading just enough to get a proper essence of the character, but not reading so far that you start to look at a completely different person than they are in that moment [on the show]."

While both actors come into play in book three, Voyager, in a much bigger way than in book two, the actors say they can't wait to get to books four and five.

"There's about a million different things I can't wait to get to," Rankin said with a laugh. "Drums of Autumn is amazing, it's an epic adventure story and what these characters get to do and where they go and the evolution of the story and the relationships and the things that happen to them, I really can't wait. I'm really excited to get started on that."

Skelton is similarly champing at the bit for fans to see her character evolve, since the new story will take Brianna to new places both physically and mentally.

"For Bree, in season three, we start to peel another layer of her and you see more of her personality. Then going forward in four, so much happens to her and you see such an emotional range put on her that you haven't seen yet," she explained. "The story really starts to open up, starts to really broaden, and you have many more dynamics. You have Roger and Brianna, which I think is a fresh, different relationship to that of Jamie and Claire's, so I think it just all bounces off each other. The pace really picks up for Roger and Brianna, so that's going to be exciting to play."

Suffice it to say, when Outlander's third season kicks off, we're going to be seeing something really special from Brianna and Roger. Watching them develop and interact with Claire and Jaime will not only be exciting for longtime fans but also the actors themselves.

"It's everything you want in a part," Rankin concluded.

Obsessed With Peanut Butter? Trader Joe's Made This Protein-Packed Granola For You

While strolling through Trader Joe's (my happy place), I stopped my cart in its tracks when I discovered this - Peanut Butter Protein Granola. Uh, hello! That's always been one of my pet peeves about granola, overnight oats, and oatmeal. While it absolutely satisfies my sweet cravings, it's not exactly high in protein, so I usually end up feeling hungry a couple hours after eating it.

It's like Trader Joe's is inside my brain, spooning me exactly what I need. Protein-packed granola for $3.49! Each 260-calorie serving offers 11 grams of protein! Choose regular oats or honey granola, and for the same two-thirds-cup serving, you'll only get six grams of protein. So this new Trader Joe's Peanut Butter Protein Granola offers almost twice the amount. More protein means you'll stay fuller for longer, which means eating fewer total daily calories. So yeah, maybe eating this new Trader Joe's granola can actually help you along on your weight-loss journey.

Where does the protein come from, you ask? From the oats and peanuts, but also from peas. You'll see pea protein on the list of ingredients, the kind you'd find in a plant-based protein powder you'd use to make a morning smoothie. You can't taste it, though, so don't worry about the flavor being compromised. All you'll taste is sweet, peanut buttery goodness in your bowl.

I especially love that it's just nine grams of sugar per serving, and there are whole peanuts that add to the amazing crunchy texture. If you're a fan of peanut butter and granola, this seems like a no-brainer. Excuse us while we add 12 bags to our cart.

Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas Step Out With Their Very Own Little Direwolf

Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas have taken a big step in their sweet romance: they adopted a dog together! The couple, who have been dating since last November, were photographed with their adorable Siberian Husky puppy in NYC on Thursday. Dressed casually in workout gear, the pair, who named the little guy Porky Basquiat, showed a little PDA as they held their dog and also let him walk while exploring the city. Sophie also gushed about Porky on social media, posting a photo of him chewing on a stick earlier this month while also revealing he has his own Instagram handle. Is it just us, or does Porky remind you a lot of the direwolves on Game of Thrones?

Attention, College Students! You Can Now Get Both Spotify and Hulu For Just $5 a Month

College students now have yet another way to procrastinate, thanks to a new partnership between Spotify and Hulu. The two companies are teaming up to offer US college students a bundled package of Hulu's limited commercials plan and Spotify Premium For Students for the jaw-dropping price of just $5 a month. Students can sign up for the deal beginning on Sept. 7 and just simply need to verify they are indeed college students.

Spotify Premium is $10 a month and Hulu's limited commercials plan costs $8 a month, so that's a whole lot of savings. If you already have a Spotify Premium For Students account, you can add on Hulu as long as you verify your "student status" again. You can do the same with a previous Hulu subscription as long as the subscription doesn't include any "premium network add-ons" and isn't paid through a third party.

Graduating this year? You might still want to sign up for the service, as Spotify states that you'll still receive the great deal "until it's 12 months after the date you first subscribed or last reactivated." As a once-broke college student myself, I wouldn't recommend letting this amazing package pass you by, kiddos.

My Before-and-After Might Look Like Weight Loss, but I Gained Over 10 Pounds

The author (right) with her personal trainer

Imagine cutting out sugar, eating cleaner than you ever have in your entire life, working out daily, running half marathons, lifting heavier weights, getting eight hours of sleep a night, drinking plenty of water, and following literally every weight-loss tip you've ever heard or read about - and then not only NOT losing a single pound, but gaining more than 10 percent of your body weight in pounds.

Until recently, I've been about the same weight since the ninth grade. I'm a pretty tiny human, and I've always been petite - at 26 years old and standing only 5 foot 2 (and three quarters!), I still get some clothes from the kids section. So when I began my fitness journey, I never set out to lose weight, but I guess I had anticipated that maybe I would drop a few pounds as a side effect of getting healthier.

About two and a half years ago, I started learning healthy recipes, eating cleaner, learning how to run (and what a burpee is), trying yoga, cutting down on alcohol (almost completely), and living a healthier lifestyle. I noticed changes almost immediately in my body and brain, and I felt fantastic.

This past year and a half, after moving to San Francisco and working as a fitness writer, healthy living became my main priority and focus. Workout classes have become my favorite pastime, and I love grabbing a smoothie or healthy bite with friends. I meal prep, am more conscious than ever of what goes in my body, and work out at *least* five times a week. I even gave up ALL sugar for six weeks this past Spring.

It was at that time that I was cutting out sugar that I also had an annual checkup with my doctor scheduled, which just so happens to be the only time I ever use a scale (I don't own one, and I have never weighed myself regularly). I didn't pay any mind when my doctor asked me to step on the scale for her as she took notes . . . until the arm on that clunky, nearly-ancient metal contraption shot way, way past where I thought it would. Roughly 11 pounds past.

"Before" and Now

Does it look like I gained 11 pounds?

While it might sound ridiculous to someone who's been on a mission to lose 20, 50, or even 100 pounds, gaining 11 pounds is quite a bit when you're my size. And when you've been the exact same weight for about 12 years, seeing such a significant change can feel jarring.

Like I mentioned, I wasn't trying to lose weight, but to gain such a significant percentage in spite of all the effort I had put into my body was a huge shock. It felt like a slap in the face or a gut punch - and then I was immediately ashamed of how devastated I felt. I'm constantly preaching body positivity. "Love yourself no matter what you weigh! Eff the scale! A number does not define you!" I do mean those things, but then the second I put a toe on the scale, I crumbled completely when the number caught me off guard.

It was at that moment I realized that without ever acknowledging it, I had been rooting such a large part of my identity in my weight . . . but why? Why did I tie myself to this one number?

I was so disappointed in myself for not being stronger mentally and emotionally. I felt a sense of responsibility to my friends, community, and women around me to be stronger, and I felt that I had failed everyone, including myself in that moment.

I anxiously looked back at my photos from the past year to try to figure out if I "looked" heavier, as I frantically texted my closest friends for affirmation. Long story short, I came to realize (through the help of friends and my personal trainer) that the weight gain was healthy, and I had lost pounds of fat yet gained pounds of muscle, and that I had nothing to worry about, physically. But that's not the point.

"Before" and Now

In one moment, with one number, I allowed myself to be distracted from all the amazing things that I accomplished in the past year.

My resting heart rate is lower. My VO2 max is higher. My mile time is nearly HALF of what it was just three years ago. I ran more half-marathons and didn't get as tired. I can do two SoulCycle classes in a row and keep up the whole time. I can finally (almost!) get that full extension of Bird of Paradise in my yoga classes. I'm lifting heavier weights than I ever could've imagined. I learned proper deadlift form. I can see my abs without flexing (whaaat!). I'm healthier overall. I feel good. I feel strong.

The scale will never be able to tell my story.

It's clear I need to work on my self-esteem; I want to be stronger so I can be a better example for the people I love and for the women who look to me for strength. Looking back at my moment on the scale, feeling that sense of disappointment in my lack of emotional fortitude, I'm trying to channel what I learned from my chat with Tracee Ellis Ross: self-acceptance can be more forgiving than self-love. She told me, "Self-acceptance for me makes space for me to still be a whole person and to be compassionate and kind and loving to myself, even in moments that have pain in them."

I also truly feel that culturally, we need to shift our focus away from "how many pounds up or down" we are to how we feel and to all the commitment and work we put into loving ourselves and treating our bodies right. Before-and-after weight-loss stories DO tell this, but oftentimes our fixation is on the weight - the "goal" - rather than the journey itself. We're taught that weight loss is good and that weight gain is bad, regardless of what we did to get to that point or what kind of shape we're in.

I heard a quote at this year's Dare to Bare SF (a body-positivity festival hosted by Movemeant Foundation) from SoulCycle instructor Kamelle Mills: "Your body is telling a story about your soul . . . your spirit. What kind of story are you telling?" I know my body is telling a WAY better story than that stupid scale.

The Real Reason I'm Wary of the PTA

When my daughter started kindergarten last year, I couldn't have been more excited, both for her and for myself. She got to attend a fantastic school with a dedicated and loving teacher and a classroom full of adorable friends, both old and new. I got seven guilt-free hours a day with one less child. What could go wrong with this scenario? Well, one little thing, and it's called the PTA (or at our school, the PTO).

Listen, I am extremely grateful for the intense amount of hard work all the women who run our school's parent-teacher organization put in. They are like little ninjas, fundraising, soliciting donations from local businesses, making sure our children all have the most enriched, positive education experiences possible and that we parents are always informed on the goings on of our school community. It's a big job, and they do it well.

I have yet to meet one woman in our school's PTO program that's anything less than lovely and gracious. There's not a Bad Moms clone in the bunch. They didn't volunteer for power or prestige, but instead to truly better the school and, subsequently, all of our children's lives. Noble, right? The only problem: they are always on the lookout for recruits and they've set their sights on me.

The only problem: they are always on the lookout for recruits and they've set their sights on me.

See, the thing about the women who are super involved with PTO is that they know it's a lot of work and they are constantly sniffing out innocent mothers who might have a little time on their hands and a desire to, you know, be a good mom. They might hear that you only work part time (even better if, like me, it's from home) or maybe not at all, and they figure you surely want to fill your hours by calling local businesses to ask for free $10 gift cards for raffle baskets and/or by organizing the school-wide ice cream social. It's for the kids, after all.

And at first, you'll think, well, yeah, I probably do have a few extra hours in my week and it might be kind of fun to pass out Dilly bars to my kids' classmates or help make the booze-filled, parents-only Spring fundraiser a great party. And so you, you naive woman, you say "yes" when they ask you to add your name to that SignUp Genius page. And then they've got you.

You've branded yourself a PTO mom, and once you're in, they expect you to go all the way in. Soon, you'll be asked to join every committee with a vacant seat, to recruit other mom friends who aren't doing their part, and to chair a fundraiser or two. You'll realize that you're in too deep with no way out, and while a little PTA is a good thing, a lot of it might make you go a little crazy.

It's a situation I've heard from so many friends, and one I'm looking to avoid. I always have my excuses for not volunteering for the big stuff at the ready (my toddler, my job, and my desire to do more "in-classroom" work are my go-tos). I have learned to fight against my tendency to say "yes" to everything, that "no" is just as acceptable an answer, and the only one I should give when asked to do something I truly don't want to or don't have the time to do. I respect the moms who dedicate so much of their time to the PTA; I just don't have the energy to be one of them.

41 Back-of-the-Arm Tattoos They'll Notice as You're Walking Away

Wrist tattoos, forearm tattoos, bicep tattoos - there are so many options when it comes to where to position your arm tattoo. And there's one more place that's often literally overlooked: the back of the arm (or a triceps tattoo).

It's the perfect spot for a vertical image, like a single flower or an arrow, though there's also enough room to fit an inspiring message or small landscape. The back of the arm is a solid choice if your tattoo isn't the first thing you want people to notice when they meet you, but perhaps the last thing they'll see as you're walking away.

Garth Brooks Stopped His Concert to Celebrate a Fan and Her Cancer-Free Son

Garth Brooks Gives RMH Family His Guitar

Warning: This video will make you cry happy tears.

Yesterday, Mason's mom received the news she'd been waiting for: Mason is officially cancer-free!! She didn't think the day could get any better, but then this happened at the Garth Brooks concert at Scotiabank Saddledome!

A huge thank you to Karyn who surprised Gale with tickets after reading her family's story on Facebook last weekend (http://bit.ly/2vU9P6I).

Posted by Ronald McDonald House Charities® Southern Alberta on Saturday, September 2, 2017

A few hours before attending a Garth Brooks concert, Gale Granrude-Gariepy learned that her young son was officially cancer-free. Though Gale had won tickets through a charity organization, her son Mason was unable to attend because his immune system was still so weak. She decided to share the good news with everyone at the concert by taking a big poster that read, "Today my son is cancer-free." Then something amazing happened.

During the concert, the country artist stopped the show to ask Gale about her message. After she explained Mason's story, Garth said, "As hard as that child has fought, I know that you have fought 100 times harder." Motioning for a marker so that he could sign a guitar, Garth said, "I'll tell you what, I need you to take something to Mason for me." Everyone in the stadium cheered as Gale was overcome with emotion. Garth finally added, "May you never have to work with the freaking c-word again . . . You have all of my strength and all of my joy. Congrats!"

Following the touching moment, Gale expressed her gratitude in a Facebook post, which included a picture of Mason holding the signed guitar, which he has been very "protective" of. Gale added, "My heart was overflowing with happiness. It has been overwhelming the love and support that we have received from day one. Your kindness and the love I felt from the dome was the best way to end this chapter."
