Weightlifting, MyFitnessPal, and a Great Coach: Chelsea's Key to Weight Loss Success
Twenty-four-year-old Chelsea Martin of Colorado Springs, CO, had dreams of getting in figure-competitor shape, but "life got in the way," and she fell off the wagon.
Chelsea: Before
Fortunately, she had the drive to pick herself back up and equip herself with the necessary tools to get strong and follow her dreams. Her secrets to success? Weightlifting, MyFitnessPal for macro tracking, and a fantastic coach at Gold's Gym. Chelsea treated finding the perfect gym like finding the perfect college, and she found the right fit with a personal trainer who she meshed with immediately. Here's more on Chelsea's amazing story of hard work and determination, with incredibly simple tips you can apply to your own healthy journey.
POPSUGAR: What made you decide to start your weight-loss journey?
Chelsea Martin: I have always been intrigued by fitness and the human body - the limits it can both withstand and break through. My fascination with exercise began in high school. I was never the skinniest or most athletic (although Lord knows I tried!). I would watch figure competitions on TV or on the internet and wonder what it must be like to look like those women on stage. Not only did I envy their physical beauty, but the confidence that these women portrayed. It was a delicate finesse between total badass and radiant beauty.
Self-confidence is something I feel everyone struggles with at some point or another, and I had been struggling for years. I was investing my time in the perceptions of others and their approval of my actions. When I took a job across country, where I had no family or friends, I realized that I could be anyone I wanted to be. I got to choose how I wanted to start my new life, and that's when I put my focus on what my heart desired for myself. Being a figure competitor was always a dream, but I decided I was going to make it a reality. I wanted to be someone for girls to look up to. I wanted people to see me and see that same strong, confident beauty that I had so badly wanted for so many years.
I hate to say that "life happened," but essentially that's what it came down to. Going through college, I was so wrapped up in school, work, family, and trying to balance a social life that I let exercise and diet fall off the grid. I aimlessly fueled my body with whatever I could find. I also sought food for comfort; I'm very much a stress eater. Working 12-hour night shifts, going through nursing school, and many, many late nights with very few hours of sleep certainly didn't help that.
PS: What drew you to Gold's Gym, specifically?
CM: Picking a gym is like picking a college. A lot of people will tell you "it just felt right" or "it just feels like home." Initially, I thought to myself, "Where can I go that will provide me the greatest opportunity at being successful in my journey to competing?" There are many commercial gyms near my neighborhood, but Gold's was the only gym that made me FEEL like I was in the right place. As I surveyed all the different barbell and dumbbell options, cable machines, cardio equipment, and other amenities, I was impressed.
However, it wasn't WHAT Gold's Gym offered, it was WHO . . . from the front-desk workers to my coach to the other members working out every day, bettering themselves. Gold's offers an environment that makes me want to come back every day so I can share my journey with others and they can continue to motivate me with theirs. Gold's has honestly become my family out here, and going to work out is the best part of my day because I get to spend time with people who genuinely invest in helping others better themselves and reach goals that may have seemed unattainable.
"Lifting weights consistently and being mindful of my diet by tracking macros has been the most effective for my body."
Before Gold's, I feel like I had tried just about everything! I have tried DVDs, YouTube exercise videos, different diet fads, detoxes and cleanses, diet pills, hours of cardio . . . you name it. Lifting weights consistently and being mindful of my diet by tracking macros has been the most effective for my body. Everyone's body reacts differently to different methods, but this has been the longest-lasting and most rewarding. I have energy, and it has given me a healthier relationship with nutrition and how I am fueling my body.
PS: What's your favorite way to work out?
CM: Weightlifting, hands down. Dumbbells, barbells . . . get me to a rack, and I'm one happy girl.
PS: What's your weekly exercise schedule?
CM: I usually train my big muscle groups (back, shoulders, and legs) twice a week. I will sometimes supplement those muscle groups with more targeted accessory muscles. For example, since I lift shoulders twice a week, one day may be shoulders and chest, and the other day may be shoulders and arms. I will typically do cardio three to four times a week, either fasted in the morning or post-workout to keep my metabolism revved after I leave the gym. I try to mix it up between HIIT and steady-state to help keep my workouts fresh.
Chelsea: After
PS: How do you keep workouts exciting?
CM: When it comes to weights, I like to vary the volume and intensity. For example, one of my leg days during the week may focus more on heavier weight with less reps, and then my second day will focus on a higher volume of reps with lighter weight to help burn that muscle that has already been fatigued earlier in the week. I also don't just lift. I like to add in resistance bands, plyometric exercises, and various bodyweight exercises to help keep my muscles confused. Each of these methods helps target different muscle fibers, again keeping my body confused and helping to burn fat.
PS: How much weight have you lost?
CM: Since I started exercising regularly (October 2016 to June 2017), I've lost 26 pounds.
PS: What was the first big difference, other than the number on the scale, that really made you feel proud and excited?
CM: When people I looked up to in the gym approached me and told me that I was motivation for them. Talk about a totally surreal feeling!
PS: How do you track your weight loss?
CM: I don't like to rely on the scale to measure my weight loss. I take a lot of progress pictures. Although it feels awkward, it is super validating to look back after a month, or even a week or two, and watch how your body is changing and adapting to your lifestyle choices. I also feel it is the healthiest way to track progress because you see YOU, not a number. I love when people guess my weight now, because nine times out of 10, they are way under.
PS: Do you count calories? What's the range of calories you eat per day?
CM: I don't count calories, but I do count macros. This has helped me identify what my body responds to the best as a fuel source and has taught me to be extremely mindful of what is in the food that I'm putting into my body.
"Taking progress pictures is the healthiest way to track progress because you see YOU, not a number."
I like to use the MyFitnessPal app on my iPhone. It's totally free, and it's super easy to use. It even has restaurant menus programmed so I can plan my meals ahead of time if I know where my friends and I are going for dinner. It was kind of tedious at first to track everything, but it helps give you an idea of where you're starting at and how you can manipulate your total carbs and fats and proteins for the day to make sure the food you are putting in your body is both delicious and beneficial for your fitness journey.
Chelsea: Before and After
PS: What are the healthy staples that are always in your fridge?
CM: Oikos Triple Zero yogurt, Quest or Oh Yeah! ONE protein bars, Kodiak Cakes (protein flapjacks), salted-caramel rice cakes with honey, peanut butter with apples, SmartPop! popcorn, and pickles.
PS: How do you strategize for meals out?
CM: MyFitnessPal app. Love it!! I seriously use it every time I must go out with family or friends to dinner. It is a lifeline for staying on track with my fitness journey.
PS: What role did Gold's Gym play in your journey? Would you recommend it?
CM: Gold's played a HUGE part in where I'm at today. Without Gold's, I would have never been connected with my amazing coach, Max, who has been my compass through this crazy fitness journey, helping me navigate macros and workouts. He's also been a huge support system, both in and out of the gym. I can honestly say that without Max's help and genuine passion to help me crush this seemingly impossible fitness goal, I would not have been successful. I would highly recommend personal training and classes at Gold's. The staff are encouraging, upbeat, and real. They invest in you and want to see you succeed. As a client, that makes me want to work harder because I don't want to let them down. It's a healthy motivator.
PS: What advice do you have for anyone starting out on a weight-loss journey?
CM: The hardest part is starting. Make a goal. Write it down. And when you wake up every morning, remind yourself of that goal and envision it happening. I'm a firm believer that we are magnets: what we put into the universe, we attract to ourselves. Put out positive energy and good vibes; you will get it right back. Be encouraging and motivating to others, and they will encourage and motivate you. Envision your dreams as a reality, and if you work hard enough, they soon will be.
Low Weights, High Reps: Feel the Burn With These Arm Exercises
We all want those arms that don't flap in the wind when we're waving hello, right? These five exercises with light weights make it look easy, but the small isometric moves ensure you feel the burn. Grab your two- or three-pound dumbbells and get going, but don't worry if you don't have weights - you can even do them without for some excellent toning.
If Any of These Photos Look Familiar to You, It May Be Time For a Mommy Timeout
Houses get messy, food gets spilled, things get broken - that's just how life is. But once kids are in the picture, those once infrequent incidents seem to become so much more commonplace - and further escalated - that it could feel like you're living inside a raging tornado at all times. If any of these photos look familiar to you, just remember, sometimes it's OK to take a step back (to laugh, to cry, whatever you need. We support you).
Read through to see 15 pieces of photographic evidence that prove it may be time for you to take a "mommy timeout."
What Guests Really Notice in Your Home
If the idea of getting your home company-ready is keeping you from hosting a dinner party or even your out-of-town in-laws, we can help. Sure, you could spend all day cleaning and decorating in anticipation, but who has the time? Here are the only things you really need to do before your guests arrive. Don't worry - they are nothing but easy.
- Additional reporting by Miranda Jones
The Scent of Your Home
Decor isn't the first thing guests notice when they walk through your door - it's the smell. Whether you're concerned about the fish you cooked the night before or your dog skipping a bath - or worse, the scents you've become noseblind to - put your mind at ease by lighting a candle or simmering a small pot of citrus peels and cinnamon sticks a half hour before guests arrive. We can't get enough of these yummy-smelling candles - all under $50.
A Well-Stocked Bar
After greeting guests, the first thing that you will want to do is offer them a drink. You don't need to be full service, but make sure you have the home bar basics covered.
Fresh Flowers
Flowers are the only decoration a house really ever needs, no matter the occasion (although we feel pretty strongly about candles too!). To get the most bang out of your buck, buy potted flowers like these orchids. They may look delicate, but with proper care, they will last for a month or longer.
The Lack of Clutter
Even if you don't have time to do a deep cleaning, you can still organize your clutter. Get a tray or a set of lidded boxes for each room and corral all the odds and ends - remotes, keys, mail - in one place. Guests will feel relaxed in a space that appears organized, even if it is just for show!
A Tidy Bathroom
Before guests arrive, make sure your bathroom has clean hand towels and enough toilet paper. Extra points for wiping down surfaces and lighting a candle!
An Organized Entryway
Not only is it the first place and last place that your guests will see, your entryway is also where they will be dropping their coats and bags. Depending on how much room you have, add a coat rack, umbrella stand, and a place to sit while taking shoes on or off.
The Only Thing Missing From This Australian Fall Wonderland Is a Pumpkin Spice Latte
Here in the US, we have our fair share of cities that feature spectacular Fall foliage, but some of the most stunning sites can also be found across the world. Mount Wilson's Breenhold Gardens in Australia transforms into a magical Fall wonderland between the months of March and May (its Autumn).
When you picture the Autumn season, this destination is exactly what comes to mind. Vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows cover over 100 acres of garden and parkland, resulting in a stunning, fiery spectacle. Though there's a lot of ground to cover when visiting Breenhold, one of the most popular photo spots appears to be beside the Laburnum Steps. Just looking at the pictures ahead will make you want to cozy up for Fall.

Edible Cookie Dough Bars Exist, So We Want 50 Cases, Please
Stop it, world! We can't take it! We can only handle so much amazing cookie dough news in one year, and we thought we'd already hit the threshold with edible Oreo cookie dough. When The Junk Food Aisle discovered edible cookie dough in bar form, it seemed too good to be true - but we've done our research, and it's all real, baby!
These delectable little miracles come courtesy of Soozie's Doozies, which offers five flavors of edible cookie dough bar: Peanut Butter Milk Chocolate, White Chocolate Peanut Butter Macadamia, Birthday Cake, Candie-Coated Chocolate, and Chocolate Chip. 41 Back-of-the-Arm Tattoos They'll Notice as You're Walking Away
Wrist tattoos, forearm tattoos, bicep tattoos - there are so many options when it comes to where to position your arm tattoo. And there's one more place that's often literally overlooked: the back of the arm (or a triceps tattoo).
It's the perfect spot for a vertical image, like a single flower or an arrow, though there's also enough room to fit an inspiring message or small landscape. The back of the arm is a solid choice if your tattoo isn't the first thing you want people to notice when they meet you, but perhaps the last thing they'll see as you're walking away.

Giddy Up! ColourPop Is Launching a My Little Pony Collection
Hay is for horses, but the upcoming ColourPop x My Little Pony is for all of us. The cult-favorite brand that's famous for its bright, affordable makeup has officially teamed up with everyone's favorite rainbow horses. Go ahead, we dare you to take a gander at the My Little Pony x ColourPop collection and not feel nostalgic for your totally '80s youth.
We know this news is making your childhood dreams come true, so we're excited to say that even your 12-year-old self could afford this collection. Everything in this 12-piece release ranges from $5 to $22.
We're so glad that "Pony Palettes" are officially a thing - the Pressed Powder Eye Shadow Palette ($16) features 12 new shades all named after your iconic hoofed friends. Butterscotch, one of the OG horses, always said that "Friendship is magic," but her honorary opalescent rosy-white powder is pretty dang enchanting, too. Blossom got her own fresh, peach-gold chrome color, and Skydancer's official shade is a Winter-ready icy lavender look.
Along with the palette, there are also two Highlighters ($8): Trickles is a soft purple, and Starflower is a peachy gold.
Three more Super Shock Highlighters ($8) are coming for your beauty bag - we're especially obsessing over Cherries Jubilee, an opalesent, glittery hot pink.
New Ultra Matte Lips ($6) are coming, and Moondancer, a dark black plum, is the one goth exception to this otherwise soft, bright collection. Guess that shade is what ponies wear when they're feeling angsty.
Along with the makeup, you can also get a Brush Set ($22), which includes five new brushes with hot-pink, fluffy bristles. Mermaids, watch out - these four-legged animals are coming for your throne.
Since that's a pretty huge haul, you'll need an on-point bag to carry it all in. Luckily, the folks at ColourPop were so kind enough as to release a Cosmetics Bag ($18) that's holographic silver with a pinch of purple - sealed with a rainbow design on the front.
If you're going to see the My Little Pony movie on Oct. 6, then be sure to pick up your swag before you hit up the theater. The My Little Pony x ColourPop assortment will be released on Oct. 5, one day before the film opens. Ahead, see every single product in this whinny of a collection.
Donald Trump Might Not Know Where or What Puerto Rico Is in This SNL Skit
Alec Baldwin revived his portrayal of Donald Trump for the season premiere of Saturday Night Live, and he had a lot of catching up to do. In addition to acknowledging the many press secretary switch-ups, the threats against North Korea, and the NFL protests, the skit also touched upon the president's more recent attack on San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz. Oh, there was also a joke about Jeff Sessions living in a grandfather clock outside the Oval Office.
In the president's exchange with Mayor Cruz in the sketch, it's revealed that Trump might not know that Puerto Rico is a United States territory . . . or where it is, for that matter. After saying it'll take a few days to reach the island, Baldwin's Trump says, "You should have paid your bills. FEMA takes a few days . . . unless you join FEMA Prime. I don't know if you know this, but you're in an island in the water. The ocean water. Big ocean with fishies and bubbles and turtles that bite." In case you're wondering, yes, President Trump did make a similar childlike comment earlier in the week. Watch the first cold open of the season above.
Little Girls and Grown Women Will Appreciate This Moana Halloween Costume
Since its release in late 2016, Moana has delighted little kids, grandparents, and everyone in between. At the core of the adorable animated film is its titular character, a vibrant 16-year-old girl who lives on the Polynesian island of Motonui. The incredible soundtrack, particularly "How Far I'll Go," gave Moana that classic, nostalgic Disney feel. Given the strong, empowering female lead and the movie's popularity - it even rivaled Frozen! - plenty of women will be eager to sport Moana's matching ensemble for Halloween.

8 Questions to Ask Yourself to Help You Declutter
Stop making excuses and clean up the clutter in your home! It'll make you feel better and make your living space look better as well! Ask yourself these questions and get rid of your items based on your answers. And when we say dispose of your clutter, we mean either sell it, donate it, recycle it, give it away to friends and family, or throw it away.
1. Have I used this in the last year?
If your answer is no, it's time to toss.
2. If I were shopping right now, would I buy this?
If the current you wouldn't buy this item now, why would you even keep it?
3. Is the only thing that's keeping me from disposing this item that I don't want to waste money?
Think of it this way: you wasted money when you bought an item you don't use.
4. Am I holding on to this for sentimental value?
Be strict and keep only a few of the items in a small memorabilia box. Then take a photo of items you are throwing away so you can keep them forever.
5. Do I have a similar item that serves the same purpose?
If yes, then get rid of one of them.
6. Do I have a realistic plan to use this?
Remember, don't lie to yourself about how perfect an item would be for Halloween. Make sure you have a concrete plan to use the item, and if you don't use it within the time frame you set for yourself to use it, then toss it.
7. Does it fit me or my living space?
You may love it, but do you have space for the item or does it even suit you now? Think hard on what to keep - your space is sacred.
8. Am I holding on to the broken item to fix in the future?
Fix it now, or if you don't get around to fixing in the next two weeks, then toss it.

What the "Syrian Malala," Muzoon Almellehan, Wants You to Know About Refugees
Muzoon Almellehan was 13 years old when a civil war forced her to stop going to school in her hometown of Daraa, Syria. Fast forward six years and Almellehan, 19, is one of the lucky ones. She now lives in Newcastle, UK with her family, where she's preparing for college - and making history. In June, she became UNICEF's youngest Goodwill Ambassador, joining the ranks of such household names as Serena Williams, Harry Belafonte, and Katy Perry. Her aim is to get more children - particularly girls - into school and educated around the world. In many ways, it's fitting that she is often referred to as the "Syrian Malala," and that she considers Malala Yousafzai both a friend and role model.
Refugee children don't just lose their homes and countries when they're forced to flee. Often, they must also give up education and, in turn, their dreams for the future. Only half of refugee children are enrolled in primary school, according to UNICEF data, and just 25 percent of refugee youth are enrolled in secondary school. In conflict-affected countries, girls are more likely to be out of school than boys.
"I consider [education] important for others because Syria does not need me alone, it needs a strong generation," she says. "We can build that strong generation only by education."
During her fourth trip to New York City on Sept. 19 - this time for the United Nations General Assembly - Almellehan sat down with POPSUGAR to discuss her journey to the UK, the importance of educating girls, and what people need to know about refugees. A day later, Almellehan travelled throughout New York City in a convoy of 27 empty school buses to symbolize the 27 million children who are out of school in conflict zones, five years after she began campaigning for education rights aged 14.
I believed that if I lost my education, I would lose everything in my life.
POPSUGAR: Tell me about your journey from your hometown in Syria to the UK.
Muzoon Almellehan: When the war began in Syria, our lives changed. We had nothing in Syria during the war; for example, no access to our basic needs like food, access to education. My father couldn't work. We were worried about bombing; at any time we would die. So that affected us. We had no choice but to flee.
My father decided to go to a refugee camp in Jordan. First, we lived in Zaatari camp [located near Syria's southern border with Jordan]. I didn't want to leave my country, my friends, and especially my school. I was worried that I couldn't continue my studies in a place like a refugee camp. I believed that if I lost my education, I would lose everything in my life.
When I lived in the refugee camp, there were many challenges. There was no electricity, and we had to bring water from a very distant place. We lived in a tent. We started everything from zero, to make new friends, to make relationships with our new neighbors. All those things were so difficult, but for me personally, I didn't care about them. My worry was just my education. When I arrived at Zaatari, I asked about the school. When I realized that I could continue my studies in the refugee camp, I was so pleased. I saw that my education could change that difficult situation, and I could make a difference for myself and others as well.
After living in refugee camps for three years, I had the chance to go to the UK. Of course, when I went there, I didn't forget the people who are still behind me, who are still living in refugee camps, who are still living in emergencies, those who are still living in Syria. I am a person with a mission for all, not just for me. I feel lucky to have access to education, I feel lucky to go to school everyday, but I cannot be completely happy until every child all over the world can have access to the same right.

PS: Why is education so important to you?
MA: When I lived in refugee camps, I saw many girls and boys and also parents who [thought] that education is not a priority. So I encouraged them to go back to school because education is important for me personally, and I consider it an important part of my life. I consider it important for others because Syria does not need me alone, it needs a strong generation. We can build that strong generation only by education. I tried my best, and I did as much as I could to encourage them to be educated people and consider education as a priority.
I just want people to know that refugees need you.
PS: And why is it important for girls especially to have an education?
MA: Education in general is something really important for everyone, no matter if you're a girl or a boy, or even if you're an old person. Girls are sometimes missing in the community. Some people think in their culture, in their norms, that it doesn't matter for girls to be educated. That it's better for her to sit at home to do cleaning, washing dishes, or raising the children. Women should have an education because the woman takes care of the children, and once we have very strong women with education, she can give us a strong community. When she's educated, she can teach her children and give them knowledge. When we can't have women as strong people, we can't have healthy and safe communities. That's really important because education is the only way that helps us to build our communities and face the challenges in our lives.

PS: In many countries, including the US and UK, there is often a stigma against and negative feeling toward refugees. What do you want people to know about refugees?
MA: There are many people who don't know anything about refugees. Before I became a refugee, I didn't want to become one, because I thought it was something shameful - or people will think I'm a different person, not a good person, a person who needs help all the time or who needs food. When I became a refugee and started campaigning for education, when I just tried to look to the positive sides of my life, I realized something: a refugee is a strong person, a refugee is a person who has had difficult experiences and difficult circumstances, which forced that refugee to become a refugee.
For you to become a refugee, it's not your choice, but it is your choice to go to a safe place to find new ways to live a normal life. That means when you become a refugee and you want to flee war or conflict, that means you want to start a new life and continue this journey in life. This means you are a strong person who believes in life and believes that you matter in this life. For this reason, I want to survive and to be somebody in this world. I don't want just to die in this war and nobody knows me. I am a person who has a voice. Refugees are normal people like others. They are people who have hope, and they have rights.
I just want people to know that refugees need you because they have difficult lives, so we need to give them opportunities, like welcome them into our countries. They deserve our attention, and they deserve for us to know that they are strong enough to rebuild their countries in the future as well. They need us in these difficult times. It is lovely, actually, for people to love us when we are citizens in our countries, but we appreciate it more when we have difficult times and people believe in our abilities and believe that we are strong, even if we are suffering.
PS: When you're done here at the UN General Assembly, what is next for you?
MA: I'm in my last year of A-levels in the UK; it is really tough. When I'm done with my work here at the General Assembly, I'm going back for homework. Next year, I will apply for university, and I'm looking to study politics and international relations. I love journalism, and it is a lovely job, and I would love to work in this field in the future.
This Q&A has been edited and condensed for clarity.
Here's Exactly What Trader Joe's Cauliflower Pizza Crust Tastes Like
The internet lost its mind yesterday upon hearing the news that Trader Joe's now offers a frozen cauliflower pizza crust. Discovered by a few lucky shoppers over Mother's Day weekend, it's everything that dairy-free, gluten-free, and low-carb dreams are made from.
We were lucky to find a cauliflower crust at our local TJs (trust us, it's selling out everywhere!), and have to say: it's pretty delicious. Not a single taster in the bunch disliked the corn flour and cauliflower crust, and everyone went in for seconds. While most tasters agreed that it would be a go-to on nights where you want pizza but are trying to be healthy, others just loved it, period. At worst, it's pretty tasteless, which is part of the reason cauliflower has such an appeal as a stand-in for things like rice or bread - it picks up all the delicious flavors of the ingredients it's cooked with.
In the June oven that we used, the the pizza came out soft and doughy - like a cross between bread and grits - but baking it a little longer or on a pizza stone would give it more of a crunch. The convenience alone is worth the price since making a cauliflower pizza crust from scratch is quite the ordeal. Overall, we recommend picking one of these up during your next trip to Trader Joe's. Be warned, it's so satisfying, you'll probably want the whole thing to yourself - and since one serving is only 80 calories, it's not necessarily the worst choice to make!
Tasting Notes
- "Tastes a little like polenta."
- "Definitely needs to be salted."
- "Not doughy like pizza crust, but still so good."
- "One of the best gluten-free options out there."
- "Only a slight taste of cauliflower; very subtle."
- "It kind of tastes like nothing."
- "This would absolutely fulfill a pizza craving."
- "I eat a pizza a lot, and this is a yummy healthy alternative."
- "Texture is sort a cross between a gluten-free cracker and grits."
- "Tastes flavorless on its own, so it all comes down to the toppings."
- "This is a game-changer for anyone who is gluten-free."
1 Move to Prep Your Entire Body For Working Out
A proper warmup before any strength-training workout will not only help you perform better during your sweat session, but it also might help ease the delayed pain, known as DOMS, that can follow a tough workout. After three to five minutes of light cardio, do a handful of walkouts to prep your entire body for the upcoming challenges you will be facing, from holding multiple planks to heaving kettlebells. We've added a lunge to this classic move to make the exercise even more effective.
These Quad Stretches Are Essential For Anyone Who's Feeling Sore
Stretching out the quads is a must do after hiking, cycling, running, stair-stepping, or any other activity that gives your thighs a workout. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to stretch these muscles, including these five.
7 Things People Who Lose Weight Do Every Day
Big changes can be made from small but smart habits - this includes weight loss! The American Institute for Cancer Research recently shared its best tips for healthy weight loss, and we couldn't agree with them more. In fact, we've seen dozens of success stories of people who have implemented these tips and habits. Here's how they work and how you can apply them to your life.
1. Set Small Goals
Lee Jordan didn't lose 300 pounds by saying, "I'm going to lose 300 pounds." His first goal? "Walking down the hall for 30 seconds." At 450 pounds, Lee described a short walk down the hall as "the Olympics." But by setting small goals, little by little, he lost an absolutely jaw-dropping amount of weight and saved his life.
"If your resolutions are overly ambitious or vague, you may find yourself overwhelmed and slipping up early in the year," said AICR in a press release. "Make concrete, measurable goals and schedule tasks into your day to help you achieve them."
A woman named Becca who lost over 100 pounds said she would've laughed at you years ago if you'd told her she'd be a half-marathoner. She started with the small goal of being able to run for an entire commercial break of a TV program, slowly building up and adding one minute at a time to her PR, before doing 5Ks and half marathons.
Set small goals for yourself daily that you know are achievable and within reach. Whether it's "add one more minute to my exercise time" or "make one healthy recipe today," one small positive action begets another.
2. Eat Veggies
Another woman who lost over 100 pounds also did so by making small changes. Brooke added a green vegetable to every single meal throughout the day, and her consistency with adding those nutrients into her diet helped make a significant impact on her overall habits and her health.
We noticed that this addition of veggies is a major habit among nearly everyone we've ever interviewed about weight loss; experts also agree it's the best way to lose weight. Some of the people we interviewed admitted that they had never tried certain veggies before their weight-loss journey began. "I found out that I love asparagus," said Amanda, who lost 86 pounds. "I'd never had it before! How did I go my whole life without eating asparagus?"
The AICR said: "Instead of denying yourself the foods you love, focus on replacing some with nutritious, healthful foods." Veggies are low in calories yet will keep you full. "Filling up on these can help curb your appetite while you're watching your weight." Whether you're making swaps throughout the day like Kara, who lost 30 pounds in four months (she has spinach in her morning smoothies, big salads for lunch, and zucchini noodles for dinner), or finishing your day with tons of vegetables for dinner like Taylor (who also lost 30 pounds), this small choice can help you lose major weight.
3. Move
It's no secret that more movement leads to more weight-loss success. "Regular physical activity [is] a key component when trying to maintain or lose weight," said AICR. And movement doesn't necessarily mean gym time.
Katie lost over 200 pounds, and her workout routine is simply walking. Brooke (mentioned earlier) hit her goal by setting a Fitbit step goal of 10,000 steps a day and sticking to that consistently.
If you're ready for more than walking and hoping to build muscle tone and get strong, too, start experimenting with different types of exercise. Courtney and Caitlin work out six to seven days a week and lost 75 and 25 pounds, respectively.
4. Practice Portion Control
This daily habit takes some consciousness and mindfulness when it comes to eating. "Portion sizes are big in America," said AICR. And if you dial in your portions, you could shed some serious weight. "Recent studies suggest that several strategies using portion awareness can all result in meaningful weight loss over a year's time."
Although 55-year-old Luz had been active her whole life, she was about 150 pounds overweight. It wasn't until she learned to get control of her overeating that she lost a significant amount of weight. During chemo treatment for cervical cancer, Luz learned to control portions, which created lasting, healthy habits contributing to her massive weight loss.
Slow down, be conscious of how much you're eating, put your fork down in between bites, and don't let your eyes be bigger than your stomach!
5. Don't Drink Calories
Is your vice sugary soda or alcohol? Time to cut ties. "Sugary soda and alcohol both add extra calories without beneficial nutrients," said AICR. "For each sugary drink that you swap out for water or another zero-calorie choice, you'll save 100 to 300 calories. Plus, alcohol by itself is linked to increased risk for several cancers, including breast and colorectal."
While Lee Jordan was on his 300-pound weight-loss journey, he noted that cutting sugary soda out was a crucial piece of his weight-loss puzzle. We also spoke with a woman named Brittany who before her wedding made no changes to her diet or exercise routine but just cut out alcohol - and she lost between five and 10 pounds in a matter of two months.
It may be a tough change at first, but take Amanda's word for it when she said it gets easier: "Your taste buds completely change once you stop eating all the added sugar." Try swapping in as much water as possible, as staying hydrated can also help you feel satiated.
6. Snack Better
People who lose weight don't have to cut out snacks, they just snack smarter. Celebrity personal trainer Chase Weber credits healthy snacks as a way to prevent sugar binges, saying, "if you get into a routine of reaching for these options, you'll avoid the pitfalls of sugary snacks [and] deceptive 'nutrition' shakes."
Follow Kara's lead (remember all her veggies throughout the day?): snack on veggies and hummus or even an apple with peanut butter. These healthier snacks (with a good balance of healthy fats and protein) will keep you from making poorer food choices.
7. Balance Cardio With Weight Training
A mix of cardio with resistance and weight training is the most effective way to lose weight with exercise. The AICR said, "working strength training into your schedule a few times a week can help you build muscle and burn calories. It's a great way to mix up your fitness routine and prevent injuries."
Speaking of mixing it up, a well-rounded fitness routine was the key to weight-loss success for Sarah and Caitlin. In fact, many of the women (and men) we spoke with credited a varied exercise schedule for their shed pounds. Brittany Dawn noted that "things clicked for me when I got into weightlifting" - and she lost 50 pounds.

Why the Recycled Storyline on Grey's Anatomy Is Just So Frustrating
With a two-hour premiere, the 14th season of Grey's Anatomy has started off with a bang. In the wake of season 13 finale's devastating fire, it's clear that there's a lot to clean up. But it's more than just fire damage that needs attention. Meredith is acting strangely, and loads of couples are either on the rocks or completely broken. By the end of the episode, we've dealt with our fair share of emotional ups and downs (especially in the context of Owen's sister). And then, an explosive cherry on the dynamite cake: Amelia Shepherd finds out she has a massive brain tumor.
I'm going to set aside the messy and cobbled way this comes together - if you're curious, DeLuca's sister suddenly shows up to conduct a study about the female brain during orgasm, and therefore needs a bunch of women to masturbate in an MRI machine - and focus on the issue at hand. We've been here before. It's been almost 10 seasons since Izzie Stevens realizes she has cancer that has spread to her liver, brain, and skin. It doesn't matter that these are two different characters. We don't need another brain tumor on Grey's Anatomy.
I presume the shocking irony the writers were aiming for is that Amelia Shepherd, the best brain surgeon in the country, is probably the only person who could remove the tumor inside her own head. Even so, there are plenty of other brain diseases and disorders she could face that offer the same thematic richness. Why didn't we dig into the depression, substance addiction, and other emotional trauma Amelia is clearly dealing with? Why does all of her behavior suddenly get to snowball into brain cancer? As someone who's watched the show since season one, it seems like a cheap explanation and an easy way out.
I guess what's most upsetting is that the writers have kind of painted themselves into a corner. Izzie Stevens has already had a miraculous brain cancer recovery with a five percent survival rate. In order to keep the story unique and emotionally charged, it seems likely that Amelia might eventually die. After all, it's clear her marriage with Owen Hunt is broken, and he already has the newly returned Teddy Altman as a potential love interest. I guess the writers could surprise us all. I suppose Amelia's brain cancer story could offer new twists and turns. Even so, the prevailing feeling is that we've been here before and we've seen this before. This feels predictable, and frankly, I'm tired.
5 Inexpensive Items That Make For Gorgeous Kitchen Backsplashes
The backsplash is by far the most fun design decision during a kitchen remodel - so why settle for standard tile or stone? Instead, turn an everyday collection into an unexpected backsplash display. The design secret here is the multiples: when small graphic items are arranged side by side, the result is a surprisingly cohesive, curated look. The best part? Not only will a DIY backsplash elevate you to Pinterest goddess status, but employing everyday items (instead of expensive marble or tile) will save you major renovation bucks, too. Win-win? We think so.
Read on for our favorite DIY kitchen backsplash ideas, and be sure to ask your local hardware store for installation tips before trying it at home.
Wine Corks
Memorialize your favorite Merlot by adhering the corks to a wet bar's backsplash in alternating horizontal and vertical pairs. Use the DIY project as an excuse to drink more vino (we won't tell anyone), or simply purchase used wine corks online. They're easy to find and usually super inexpensive.
Dominoes
Get your kitchen's game face on with dominoes. The classic black and white game pieces add a decidedly sophisticated touch when arranged in rows. Complement the look with the latest kitchen trend: dark gray cabinets and warm brass hardware.
Bottle Caps
Bottle caps, which look like colorful penny tile from afar, are right at home in the kitchen. Choose a color theme - only blue bottle caps, for example - or include all hues for the ultimate vibrant look. Enlist friends to collect, or buy bottle caps in bulk from Etsy sellers, like TorBearNC.
Coasters
Bar and restaurant coasters, bursting with fun fonts and graphic treatments, are an inexpensive way to replicate the look of ceramic tile but with an unexpected twist. Make a point to collect the coasters during travels, and you'll create a memory-filled scrapbook for your walls. Simply arrange the coasters as if you would square tiles and then cover them with a large glass plate for protection against cooking oils.
Plates
Channel your inner Antoni Gaudí and design a mosaic backsplash using smashed dinner plates and platters. Vintage varieties are a dime a dozen at antique stores and flea markets, usually costing a mere few dollars each. Pile the dinnerware in a cloth bag (to avoid flying pieces) before breaking them with a hammer. Then glue the roughly one-inch pieces to your walls in a pattern or at random.
A Rarely Seen Look at How Princess Diana Decorated Her Private Palace Quarters
Diana was famous for her fashion choices, but her taste in home decor is a little less well-known. When she first moved into Apartments 8 and 9 at Kensington Palace as a new bride, she was just 20 years old and she had three floors of rooms to decorate in the style of her choosing. However, the revamp had to suit the 17th century building as well as blend with the priceless antiques and oil paintings already displayed in the rooms. Diana turned to her mother for help, and she recommended her interior designer, Dudley Poplak, who worked with Diana to create a suite of rooms that combined traditional royal gravitas with Diana's fresh, fun, and feminine style. Take an up close look ahead.

Congressman and Pastor Says "If It Wasn't Sexist," He'd Call His Female Colleagues "Eye Candy"
Rep. Mark Walker of North Carolina, who is also a pastor, is facing some blowback after his comments about his female colleagues. Why? In a meeting of the Republican Study Committee on Sept. 26, of which Walker is chairperson, the religious and political leader greeted the group thusly: "The accomplished men and women of the RSC. And women. If it wasn't sexist, I would say the RSC eye candy, but we'll leave that out of the record." Guess what? That statement did not get left out of the record!
The Republican Study Committee, a conservative group, counts "preserving traditional values" among its main goals. Only 16 of its 160 members are women. Speaking of "traditional values": Walker also became the cochair of the hyperconservative Congressional Prayer Caucus in January. The group promotes legislative prayer and "religious freedom," which critics say oversteps the bounds of religion's place in government. Their most notable effort lately is a push to overturn the Johnson Amendment, which bars religious organizations from supporting or opposing political candidates.
Walker did later apologize for his eye candy comment when reached by CNN - kind of. "During a press event today, I made a flippant remark meant to be lighthearted but fell short," Walker said. "I'm proud of the women who serve in our RSC leadership."
Unfortunately, by dismissing his casual objectification of the women he works alongside as "lighthearted," Walker's apology fell pretty flat.

What Exactly Is CBD Oil, and Should You Be Using It?
Is it possible? Can cannabis can be beneficial without having to get you high? Yes, and that's because of CBD. What exactly is CBD, and why is it making waves? Let's break it down, starting with the common questions you probably have.
Does CBD Get You High?
Short answer: no.
The high feeling most people associate with marijuana comes from THC, an active component found in the plant. Besides its brain-altering capabilities, THC binds to receptors in the brain and can help with many several ailments and disorders, some of which include appetite loss, nausea, migraines, glaucoma, chronic pain, and arthritis. For context, there are close to 100 cannabinoid compounds in a cannabis plant, but THC is the only one that is psychoactive.
CBD is also a natural component in cannabis, but unlike THC, it doesn't get you high. CBD binds to receptors all throughout the body instead of the brain and does not cause a feeling of euphoria. It contains very low amounts of THC (0.3 percent), not enough to get you high.
What Is CBD Oil Used For?
CBD may help to . . .
- Ease anxiety and insomnia
- Treat the effects of Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson's disease
- Reduce seizures brought on from epilepsy
- Relieve muscle and joint pain from spinal cord injuries and conditions such as arthritis
"[Because CBD] has anti-inflammatory effects, [it] could be helpful for patients with chronic inflammation," said William Hayes Wilson, Piedmont Atlanta Hospital's chief of rheumatology. "I'm a pragmatist."
How Do You Take CBD?
The most common usage for CBD is as an oil delivered as a tincture. You simply drop it into whatever liquid you're drinking. You can also get CBD through edibles, vapor, sprays, and salves. The oil itself can come in many unusual flavors: blueberry custard, chunky monkey, gummy blast, and even unicorn milk. Different varieties also target different benefits: immune booster, anxiety formula, sleep formula, stress formula, or pain relief.
Wilson also told POPSUGAR that patients who suffer from localized pain are great candidates to use the oil because they can just rub it on whatever part of their body is hurt. "There are some people who have pain in just their feet or their hands," he said. "Rather than treating their whole body, you could treat it with something topical like CBD oil."
It's important to note that because CBD products are not regulated, there are no guidelines for dosage. It's up to the user to determine what works for them.
Where Do You Get It?
You can order CBD oil from the comfort of your own home or pick it up at a local dispensary.
Is It Legal?
This is tricky. As of August 2017, medical marijuana is legal in 28 states (plus Washington DC), and CBD is legal in an additional 15 states. Experts estimate that that CBD market will be worth $3 billion by 2021. Though the oil is available online, the FDA states that it is illegal to transport it across state lines. However, some distributors have found a way around this by keeping the levels of THC low in their CBD-based products. The products from Colorado-based company Charlotte's Web contain less than 0.3 percent THC, which means they can ship to all 50 states.

The 3 Kylie Cosmetics Products Kylie Jenner Can't Use During Pregnancy
Sept. 22, 2017, will forever be known as the day the world set aside its differences to band together for a collective "Whaaaaa?" upon hearing news that Kylie Jenner is pregnant. After the initial shock subsided, so many questions emerged. Perhaps the most major one for beauty junkies was this inquiry: can the 20-year-old businesswoman use her own Kylie Cosmetics products if she's expecting her first child?
And the answer is, according to Billboard, sort of. Like most pregnant women, Kylie will have to switch up certain makeup products - including ones she created. Here's what Dr. Jacques Moritz, an ob-gyn at Weill Cornell in NYC, told the music site isn't kosher for Kylie to use (or inject!).

Someone on Reddit Made a Fake Daria Palette, So Beauty Brands, Get on This Sh*t
Daria may have just turned 20 this year, but we are still obsessed with the MTV cartoon's witty, sarcastic one-liners. The older we get, the more we understand the fictional 16-year-old's nuggets of life advice. Seriously, Daria Morgendorffer ranks high up there on the list of great 20th century philosophers. Case in point:

Even though Daria would be in her 30s by now, the internet is still obsessed with the character. In fact, one genius Redditor was kind enough to give the world a fake mock-up of a Daria-inspired palette.
Not only is it so on point (of course Daria's cheery younger sister Quinn would wear the creamsicle NYX Primal Colors in Hot Orange), but it is actually pretty gorgeous.
While Daria never really cared about looking cool (which, of course, made her fly AF), her honorary shade is super trendy for Fall. According to Reddit, Daria would wear Inglot Freedom Eyeshadow in 333 ($7). This heather green color, of course, matches her namesake camo jacket.
Similarly, Jane Lane, Daria's best friend and right-hand woman, also gets a hue inspired by her go-to burgundy flannel. Her proposed color is Make Up For Ever's Refill Artist Shadow in Morello Cherry ($21).
In total, this mock-up features 12 hues for the show's most popular reoccurring characters. From matte to shimmer and metallic shades, this fake palette is pretty chic. We would totally wear it - so beauty brands, if you're reading this, please make the Daria Collection a thing!
