We're Calling It: These Will Be the Hottest Toys of the Holiday Season

It's a simple pleasure to know that after all the stresses of the season, that kiddo is going to be very happy. Thankfully, the difficult part of picking a toy to give doesn't have to be challenging. Any one of these hot holiday toys is sure to make even the pickiest kids very happy!

Watch Out, Property Brothers - Ryan Gosling Introduces The Fliplets on SNL

Watch out, Jonathan and Drew Scott; there's a new siblings show on HGTV. During the season premiere of Saturday Night Live, Ryan Gosling took part in a Property Brothers-inspired skit with a dark twist. The Fliplets, as the show is called, is centered on three brothers who use home renovations to distract themselves from past family drama.

While Pete and Zeke play it straight, Tristan (Gosling) can't get over their parents' divorce. "I don't think they ever fully grieved the death of our family," Gosling uncomfortably says in what's supposed to be an upbeat segment. Adding, "Rather than face the demons that they have, they go city to city trying to build the home they never had."

From that point on, the skit pretty much becomes increasingly dark and more bizarre. Watch the hysterical spoof above.

This Is the Most Surprising Side Effect I Experienced After Going Vegan

Clearer skin, more energy, better digestion, and a flatter tummy - these were the promises that were made to me when I went vegan in 2011. I was skeptical of every last one of them, but after sticking with the diet for a couple of weeks, I started to notice all of these changes, and things just got better and better the longer I ate plant-based foods.

There was one strange side effect of going vegan, though, that really took me by surprise. After being on a whole-foods, plant-based diet for several months, I realized that my body odor completely changed. It first occurred to me when I forgot to put on deodorant before an endurance running class, a place where I'm guaranteed to sweat my ass off. I left the class drenched as usual, but when I lifted my arms to take off my sports bra, I realized that there was no aroma whatsoever coming from my armpit.

To make sure it wasn't just a happy coincidence, I deliberately left my deodorant in the medicine cabinet over the next couple of days and did all my workouts sans armpit coverage. Much to my surprise, there wasn't a single day when I noticed a gross smell coming from my body.

I had heard from various people before I went vegan that this was a common side effect of adopting this kind of diet, but I usually brushed it off as plant-based propaganda. But there seems to be some evidence out there suggesting that this is to be expected.

Researchers at Charles University in Prague, for example, conducted a study on a group of participants, giving them meals with meat for two weeks and vegetarian meals for another two weeks. They gathered the body odor from participating men and let women smell it and give their feedback. They discovered that women found men's scents to be much more sexually attractive and pleasant in general when they were eating meals without any meat. Clearly, body odor is affected by what you put into your body, especially when it comes to animal products.

This doesn't surprise me at all, because my boyfriend, who has been vegan for two years, is a marathon runner, and every time he comes back from a distance run covered in sweat, I never smell anything off-putting from him. In fact, I've never smelled any body odor from him that has made me wrinkle my nose. I think that's a better indicator than my own scents, because sometimes you don't really know what you smell like until someone else gives you feedback.

There are a lot of days when I still forget to put on my natural deodorant, and I never worry that I'm going to stink up the room, even if I'm at the gym. It might be a very unexpected side effect of veganism, but it's one I'm happy to accept.

Meet the Cauliflower Pizza That Blows Trader Joe's Out of the Water

Holy shnikeys, fam. We have some news - you may want to sit down for this. We know that you all (and us, included) lost our minds when Trader Joe's came out with cauliflower pizza crust. It was a big deal, there's no denying it. But . . . there's a new cauliflower pizza in town . . and . . . it's better. A lot better.

The brand in question: Caulipower. You can buy Caulipower cauliflower premade pizzas or just the crust - we tried the Margherita, Three Cheese, and Veggie premade varieties, and all three blew our taste testers away, in an unprecedented unanimously positive review from over 30 of our colleagues, with a rare "6 out of 5" score (accompanied by the note "crust on fleek").

Breakdown of crust ingredients: cauliflower, brown rice flour, corn starch, water, tapioca, sunflower oil, extra virgin olive oil, sugar, egg, xanthan gum, yeast, salt, vinegar, and baking powder. This differs from the Trader Joe's recipe, which is cauliflower, cornflour, water, corn starch, potato starch, olive oil, and salt. Main differences: Caulipower is NOT vegan; Trader Joe's is. Both are gluten-free and dairy-free.

Caulipower's serving is 1/3 crust, while Trader Joe's is 1/6, but in terms of weight, they're very close (Caulipower is 57 grams and Trader Joe's is 50 grams), with Caulipower's serving being more than double the calories of Trader Joe's (170 vs. 80), with more fat, protein, and carbohydrates.

We baked pizza after pizza in the POPSUGAR office (they only took about nine or 10 minutes in the June oven), and every bite was devoured. We could hardly get a photo of the melty, cheesy, cauliflower goodness because our coworkers couldn't keep their hands off of it! Here are some highlights from the reviews:

  • "Delicious cauliflower flavor comes out, but still get the feeling of pizza!"
  • "Is this really cauliflower?"
  • "Never would've guessed this is cauliflower - so good."
  • "Best healthy pizza I've tried yet!"
  • "This is SO good! Doesn't taste like cauliflower at all."
  • "Crust on fleek."
  • "It's not delivery, it's not DiGiorno . . . it's better."
  • "Cannot believe it's not bread!"
  • "This feels like a lie because it's so good."
  • "The best cauliflower crust I've had. Better than TJ's (doesn't even taste GF)."
  • "Tastes just like a regular pizza crust."
  • "I'm a pizza connoisseur and this is damn good."
  • "I've tried to make this at home and it's never been this good!"
  • "I love this and would eat it daily! Is it still healthy in that case?"

You can get Caulipower pizza in the frozen section from stores like Whole Foods, Gelson's, or Bristol Farms, or even order it on Amazon if your local store doesn't have it.

I'm Proof That Morning Workouts Can Change Your Life

I wasn't always a morning person.

I vividly remember my elementary-school struggle to get out of bed at the ungodly hour of 7:30 a.m. In middle school, I discovered the joys of staying up past midnight and sleeping well into the morning on weekends, Summer weather be damned.

In high school, I joined the crew team, and it quickly became my life. Though most of our practices took place in the afternoon, we occasionally practiced at 6 a.m., and I took to those morning workouts with a near-fanatical devotion. Watching the sun rising majestically over the Philadelphia skyline from the Schuylkill River, I first experienced the inward thrill of feeling like the world belonged to me while everyone else was still asleep.

In college, practice took place exclusively at 6 a.m., six days a week, often followed by an hour in the weight room. The majesty of morning quickly wore off with the grueling schedule and over time became routine. Even on days off, no matter how hard I'd tried to exhaust myself the night before, I'd wake naturally by 7 a.m., staring irritably at the ceiling.

After graduation, I reverted back to afternoon workouts, simply because I could. There were no more races to win, no more depth charts to climb, no more school colors to wave. I sweated through evening yoga classes and went for runs on weekend mornings, long after the sun had risen. And then one day, my roommate joined a gym and started taking an early morning strength and conditioning class. She invited me to try it with her. I resisted and then relented.

I never looked back.

I immediately got hooked on the most obvious advantage of early morning workouts: getting it over with. I loved not having to plan out everything I ate during the day to ensure that I would be neither too full nor too lightheaded to work out in the evening. I loved having my evenings free to spend with friends. I never felt exhausted after a workout; on the contrary, I was more awake upon arriving to work than I'd ever been. Before long, if I didn't work out in the morning, I wouldn't do it at all.

When I became a Spin instructor several years later, it felt only natural to volunteer to teach the early morning classes. There is a dedicated crowd who attends regularly, and their energy and drive are what gets me out of bed in the morning. Still, nothing makes me happier than seeing a member who regularly attends evening and weekend classes deciding to give the 6 a.m. a try. Satisfaction at getting a workout out of the way is a common refrain, but over time, I hope that they start to see that it's more than that.

I hope they feel a secret triumph when they see the sun rising after their workout and know that they were up first. I hope they find that they really can take time for themselves without compromising on all that they give to other people all day long. I hope they fall in love with the feeling of walking into the studio barely awake and leaving ready to take on the world.

Of course, all of this is only possible if one can overcome the most obvious hurdle: getting out of bed. For that, I offer my two favorite pieces of advice:

1. Lay out EVERYTHING the night before.

The last thing you need when staggering half-asleep out of the house before sunrise is to feel like you forgot something, especially something like proper clothing or a water bottle that's going to make a huge difference in your comfort level in class or at the gym. Don't make it harder for yourself. Before you go to bed, when your brain is functioning fully, lay out everything you're going to need in a spot where it'll be easy to grab: clothes (right down to the socks), footwear, a water bottle, a towel, and anything else that you need to be comfortable and get the most out of your workout. This could include anything from a Fitbit to an energy bar to something you might need if you're planning to go straight to work from the gym or studio.

2. Stand up.

When your alarm goes off, hit stop (not snooze!) and stand up. Once you're up, you're likely to move, and if you move, you'll make it out the door and to your workout. I always tell my classes that if you just get yourself to the studio at that hour, you're going to workout - that's the easy part. But none of it is possible without standing up, so just start there and let that be your focus. The rest will come naturally.

Cookies & "Scream" M&M's Are Here to Make This Halloween the Best Yet!

Can it be Halloween already? We're ready to stock up on these new M&M's! We first learned of the new Cookies & Screeem M&M's when Instagram user Junkbanter, the snack connoisseur we follow for all things junk-food news, shared a snap of the candy, which was found at Target. These Halloween-inspired cookies and creme M&M's have a dark chocolate shell, a white chocolate filling, and a white speckled exterior, and OMG, we're going to need to find these immediately. This new flavor is sort of like a mashup between M&M's and Oreos, and it honestly doesn't get much better than that.

POPSUGAR confirmed with a Target representative that Cookies & Screeem M&M's are exclusive to Target and are available now for $3 per bag. The Instagram user noted in his caption, "This is all spooky foreplay for the Triple Chocolate M&M's coming this Winter," and while we're equally as excited for those, we have a feeling these festive M&M's are going to be the star of Halloween candy this year.

To celebrate the start of Fall, Project 7 introduced its new Moscow Mule Gourmet Gummies and Sour Caramel Apple Gourmet Gummies, both of which are available at Target.

We know what you're probably thinking, and no, the Moscow Mule Gourmet Gummies do not contain actual alcohol. They are, however, made with organic sweeteners and no artificial flavors. According to one person who tried them, the gummy bears are really good and taste like the real thing. "The taste is pure lime and mint, a bit tangy," they wrote on Instagram. We'll cheers to that!

You'll Reconsider Tough-Loving Your Baby After Reading the Story Behind This Mother's Photo

This was from several weeks back, yes, I climbed in the crib in hopes to soothe my screaming, teething, blushed faced,...

Posted by Dayna Mager on Thursday, March 31, 2016

When cries from the baby monitor wake you in the middle of the night, do you run to your baby's room or let your little one cry it out? Parents who feel strongly about tough love may rethink their methods after learning the story behind this beautiful photo of a mother sleeping in her daughter's crib. Michigan-based photographer Dayna Mager posted the picture on her Facebook wall, which has gone viral for good reason.

Her husband Matt snapped the shot of Dayna and their 5-month-old daughter, Luella, when he found them sleeping in her crib after coming home from work. In her caption, Dayna wrote that she remembered the promise she made to Luella after being so deeply moved by a missionary's story at a worship concert she and Matt once attended. "Yes, I climbed in the crib in hopes to soothe my screaming, teething, blushed faced, and tear soaked little girl."

The missionary spoke about visiting a nursery in a Ugandan orphanage, where he saw more than 100 cribs with babies. Astounded by the complete silence, he asked why he didn't hear a single cry, in which the host replied, "After about a week of them being here, and crying out for countless hours, they eventually stop when they realize no one is coming for them . . ."

That was the moment that changed Dayna entirely. "I broke. I literally could have picked up pieces of my heart scattered about the auditorium floor. But instead, it stirred in me a longing, a hunger." She wrote:

"We came home, and that night as Luella rested her tiny little 10lb body against mine and we rocked, I made a promise to her. A promise that I would always come to her . . . We will show her through our tears and frustrations at times, that it is okay to cry, and it's OK to feel. That we will always be a safe place, and we will always come to her."

Dayna shared on HuffPost Parents how the missionary's life-changing story has made her "cherish even the sleepless nights and scream tantrums." And with 62,000 reactions and almost 23,000 shares, Dayna's photo and words have clearly struck a chord with other parents.

To the People Who Say My Kids Are Too Young to Remember Disneyland

I've heard this over and over: "Why bother taking a child under the age of 5 years old to Disneyland? They won't even remember it! Why deal with all those crowds and spend all that money on a kid who won't have any memory of their first visit?" I mean, why do anything with your children before they're old enough to remember it, then?

And I saw so many babies there during my trip with my 3.5-year-old and 15-month-old that I know I am not alone in disagreeing with this point of view. Not to mention, I have proof - a photo of myself at 3 years old sitting on my dad's shoulders in front of the Mickey Mouse flowers that brings back so many nostalgic "memories" even 29 years later. Turns out, in addition to wanting to give your kids a magical childhood experience, there are actually so many reasons to take them to Disneyland when they're young.

Who Needs a Pickle-Back Shot When Dill-Pickle-Infused Vodka Exists?!

You might've thought that pickle-flavored alcohol peaked with dill pickle beer, but we're here to tell you some happy news: you were wrong. And let us tell ya, your Bloody Mary game is about to become legendary, because our latest pickle-infused discovery is sour, dill-infused vodka. After we heard that Blue Spirits Distilling offers its own take on pickle-flavored liquor, we scoured the internet and realized that pickle vodka is available from several spirits purveyors.

Chilled Dills, a company that solely produces pickle-flavored vodka, describes its namesake offering as "smooth" and perfect for Bloody Marys, pickle-tinis, or by itself on the rocks:

We have combined the amazing taste of the finest pickles and their juice with a U.S. made, ultra-premium vodka. Combining the two, we have created a delicious, flavored vodka with a hint of dill pickle; very smooth and refreshing.

Another company that sells pickle-flavored vodka, Last Mountain Distillery, prides itself in being Canada's only pickle-infused spirits producer. It also claims that pickle vodka is "amazing in caesars," Canada's answer to the Bloody Mary, which is made with clamato juice.

If you've lived in the darkness, not realizing that you could be drinking pickle vodka, now's your chance to make up for lost time. Check out the photos ahead of the various dill-infused options out there, then peep this list to find pickle liquor near you.

Exercise and Alcohol May Be More Connected Than You Think, Study Says

There's nothing like a cold beer or a nice rosé after a long run. Two 2015 studies, however, show a close relationship between alcohol intake and physical activity, suggesting that exercise may even directly influence the amount people drink and when.

One of the studies includes research conducted by Pennsylvania State University, which looked at the lifestyles of 150 adult men and women from ages 18 to 75. Participants were asked to complete detailed questionnaires and to document their daily drinking and exercise activity using a provided smartphone app for three weeks. Volunteers continued to record their activity three additional periods throughout the year.

Results found that on the days people exercised more than usual, they also tended to drink more. Age, gender, and season didn't influence these findings. This connection, however, did not mean that exercise causes heavy drinking; more often than not, participants primarily stuck to moderate intake.

Test subjects in the second study included lab rats that showed both exercise and alcohol increased reward-processing activity in the brain. Although individually, exercise and alcohol did not have the same effects on the rodents, the high proved to be stronger when done together. Therefore, a possible explanation to how the two are interconnected could be that we want to strengthen and prolong our post-workout highs with a drink afterward. Alternative answers could include that people are more motivated to exercise after drinking because of calorie guilt and that those who work out together are more likely to socialize outside the gym or off field.

Although results from both these studies aren't a cause for worry, they might make you more aware of that extra glass you're more likely to pour the night of your workout. So keep calm and drink on (in moderation).

Does Drinking Apple Cider Vinegar Help You Lose Weight? A Dietitian's Response

You've been taking shots of apple cider vinegar (ACV), adding it to your morning glass of water, or making ACV smoothies because you heard it helps with weight loss. But does it really have that much of an impact on the scale?

POPSUGAR asked certified dietitian Leslie Langevin, MS, RD, CD, of Whole Health Nutrition, who said this is a pretty controversial topic. Leslie said that there isn't any harm in taking it regularly but that she wouldn't recommend it for a weight-loss supplement. She told POPSUGAR, "There is some evidence it can help with blood sugar levels and possibly weight loss, but we are very cautious about recommending things without a ton of evidence."

Some small studies on animals, mostly mice, show that it may promote feeling satiated so you end up eating less all day. Other studies say it may suppress the accumulation of body fat and reduce body weight, but again, that was tested on mice, not people. Taking ACV may also block starch absorption, which prevents blood sugar spikes, which in turn suppresses appetite.

These studies sound promising, but as mentioned above, there haven't been extensive studies proving that taking ACV daily will greatly impact your metabolism or help with weight loss.

This is great news if you hate drinking apple cider vinegar but have been forcing yourself to endure the sour flavor purely for weight-loss purposes. Leslie says it can't hurt to add vinegar to salads for taste or to add it to your morning lemon water, but don't jump to taking it as a weight-loss aid since more research needs to be conducted to prove it's worth it.

Translation: ACV is no magic weight-loss elixir! She suggests to "fix your underlying diet and exercise problems that are not allowing you to lose weight."

Trevor Noah Obliterates the Argument That Athletes Shouldn't Protest on the Field

Trevor Noah has weighed in on the widespread NFL protests that have been occurring as a result of the president's latest attack on outspoken athletes like Colin Kaepernick and Stephen Curry. Though many have come forward to support the #TakeAKnee movement, those who oppose it have argued that athletes should keep politics off the field. On the Sept. 25 episode of The Daily Show, Noah wondered why.

Noah asked, "When is the right time for black people to protest?" To get some answers, he rolled a clip of United States Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin saying that athletes should "do free speech on their own time." In response, Noah said, "Can you imagine Mnuchin giving that advice to Rosa Parks? He would just be like, 'Hey, Rosa, why you protesting on the bus, huh? People have places to be. Take the bus to your house, sit down on your couch, and protest from home!'"

Athletes, however, weren't the only ones taking a knee following Donald Trump's divisive comments. At the Global Citizens Music Festival in New York City, Stevie Wonder also got down on his knees to show his support. Former congressman and current radio host Joe Walsh went on to call Wonder "another ungrateful black multi millionaire" on Twitter.

That moment prompted Noah to deliver one of the most profound statements from the timely segment. "When a white billionaire spends a year screaming that America is a disaster, he's in touch with the country," he said. "But when a black man kneels quietly, he should be grateful for the successes America has allowed him to have?"

Noah ended with a Dr. Seuss-inspired rhyme that's really worth hearing. Watch the clip in its entirety above.

I Spent Weeks Traveling Europe With Disney - Here's What It Was Really Like

The only thing better than one Disney vacation? Two of them! This past August, I went on an Adventures by Disney trip to Barcelona, and then right after, I took the Mediterranean Disney Cruise Line sailing on the Disney Magic, and spoiler alert: it was freaking fantastic. With the bulk of my Disney travels having been to the theme parks, I had no idea that linking both trips together meant I'd discover Spain, France, and Italy with an extra heaping of fairy dust.

Even though I'm a Disney expert, I never could have comprehended the joy of exploring the Colosseum, watching Beauty and the Beast in 3D, and snapping selfies with Mickey Mouse on the same day until experiencing it in real life. (No offense, Epcot, but this new way to explore the globe with Disney is much better than walking around the World Showcase!)

Not quite sure if you're game for an international Disney trip? Let us show you everything that goes into pairing an overseas journey with your favorite fairy-tale magic. It's exciting, fun, and easier than you'd expect to reach peak #vacationgoals across Europe with Mickey Mouse by your side.

4 Lessons I Learned From Starting Over Professionally

I started my year of not knowing in May 2016. I was at a job I knew I wanted to leave for a while and, in fact, didn't realize how unchallenged I was until I left. Here's a tip - if you're eating more times a day than is necessary, have minimal desire to leave the house in the morning, and read about obscure Flemish designers on Vogue.com to pass the time, you probably don't like your job.

So, I found myself for the first time in my professional life not working - and I had never not worked. I knew it was time to start over from scratch which required lots of soul searching, meditating, and an amount of courage I have to summon hourly. My year is not over yet, but I've been getting so many questions about what I've learned in this extraordinary time-in-the-making, I put pen to paper and wrote it all down.

Lesson 1: Do Your Research and Don't Be Afraid to Reach Out

I made it my mission to find out everything that was happening in the digital entertainment industry. I felt like if I had a solid grasp on the landscape then I would know everything happening in my business and be able to make decisions. So, I called and emailed everyone. I LinkedIn messaged everyone. I never asked for a job; I just asked to have a meeting or a call and learn what was going on at their company. And guess what? When you're only asking to have a conversation with someone and learn (and you have a solid background to stand on) people are super nice! I had tons of meetings, excessively drank almond-milk lattes, and met a crazy number of people. I kept a spreadsheet tracking what everyone was doing and what they were looking for, so I would know where to take my various projects. I learned so much, it was awesome, and I quadrupled my network. Many people have asked me, "But how did you call people? You just called them?" Yes, I just called them. The worst they can do is say "no" or not answer your email. And guess what: they'll probably answer.

Lesson 2: Never Stop the Creative Cycle

I suppose this one is different in every industry, but I did not stop the creative cycle. I watched everything on the internet (since I'm in digital entertainment), and when I had no resources, I taught myself to shoot and edit a daily news show on Instagram. It was not glamorous (my poor host can attest to this), but it kept me busy, it kept my mind going, and it kept me being creative. Plus, it's a better use of time than sulking, which brings me to . . .

Lesson 3: Some Days Are Difficult (Like Really, Really Difficult)

Some days are really hard when you are in an extraordinary time of not knowing. Uncertainty is an inherently scary space. You have to rely on your resilience. You have to trust in the universe. You have to keep yourself from thinking you're a hack (you're not a hack!). Keep amazing friends and family around and they will remind you of how fantastic you are. Trust me, you've got this!

Lesson 4: Life Is an Adventure When You're Open to Everything

I find a lot of people seem stuck in a place where they don't know what they want to do and they don't know how to start. Just say "yes" and start. I started working again and creating work because I said "yes" to everything. Try it. And if you don't like it, don't do it again. But how will you know until you try? By saying "yes" enough times, you will find what makes your heart sing.

My year isn't over yet and I'm still navigating my path, but I'm so grateful for all the opportunities I've had, the people I've met, and the content I'm making that I'm overwhelmed with gratitude and excitement daily! Since I've embarked on my transformative year, every day is an adventure living out in the world. Life is fun. I'm doing what I love with awesome people. I would never have gotten here if I'd stayed where I was. What's more exciting than that? So say "yes" to everything, try everything, and take risks. And never forget to follow up on your invoices.

Whoa - Ree Drummond's New Bedding Collection Is Shockingly Stylish (and Cheap)

Whoa - Ree Drummond, The Pioneer Woman, is releasing a new bedding line on Wednesday, Oct. 4, exclusively on Walmart.com, and we have a first look! Ree told POPSUGAR, "The defining feature of my products is there's plenty of color going on and floral patterns. Not everything has to match. There are a lot of opportunities to build your own combination of things as you like them." While we all know and love her Walmart kitchen goods, Ree said, "The bedroom was the next place I wanted to go [with the collection]. I'm a bit of a low-key interior decorator, meaning I don't walk into a room and think of walls I can move and all these huge transformations. I just think, 'How can I give it a little bit of a make-over? Dress it up. Give it some personality.' I think bedding is a wonderful way to do that."

On the phone, Ree said that she's "just unpacking the boxes" of the complete bedding line, which features ruffle-edged sheets, quilts, comforters, shams, and decorative pillows. "I wanted to get the exact product the customers would get when they place their orders," Ree explained. Of all the items, Ree did name a few favorites:

"I started loving the pattern Beautiful Bouquet and Rose Garden, because I'm all about the flowers. I'm so crazy about those patterns, but I've really fallen in love with the solid quilts. There's a bright yellow, red, and teal. They look so pretty, whether you are using them as a comforter or draping them over the end of your bed. The decorative pillows are just a reflection of my soul. They are really bright, and you can throw them on the bed or even on the sofa. I've got some characters from the ranch. There's a cow surrounded by florals, a basset hound, and a kitty from the ranch. There are little hints of my real home life."

Take a look at photos of the entire collection, which ranges from $20 to $100 per item. While exact prices aren't available until the line launches, you can buy the Pioneer Woman bedding from Walmart.com and Hayneedle.com starting Oct. 4.

That Moment When You Stop Caring About Being "Cool"

There's a line in Almost Famous about the decline of rock 'n' roll, where Lester Bangs laments that it's just becoming "an industry of cool." I was 16 when the movie came out, and it was (and still is) one of my favorites, but my teenage self didn't fully "get" the joke. What's wrong with being cool? Wasn't that all I aspired to be? Wasn't that what kept me up at night as I analyzed every little thing I may have done that day at school that could have been perceived as uncool by my crush, my friends, the "cool" kids?

Trying to be cool is exhausting, and it's not until you get to the other side of it that you realize just how much time and energy is wasted on this futile endeavor. Thankfully, I've gotten to that other side. One day, I just woke up, and realized I had stopped caring about being cool. It could have been when I turned 30, or it could have been when I no longer recognized any of the bands on the Coachella lineup.

Either way, in my early 30s I definitely noticed in a shift in my behavior and a general "I don't give a f*ck if people think I'm cool or not" attitude. Some of the uncool things I started doing included:

  • Trying out fashion trends a good year after they peaked. ("Can I pull this off?" being the question I ask myself every day.)
  • Not having enough energy to go to the latest Instagrammable "museum."
  • Discussing the best travel credit cards at book club.
  • Going to book club.
  • Not watching Game of Thrones and other superpopular TV shows and movies.
  • Instead watching snail-paced British mysteries that star 50-something small-town detectives or priests who solve murders.
  • Not wearing makeup in public because it's the weekend and I'll look half-dead if I want to.
  • Listening to '90s country music because I like it, OK. (Also, you know you're getting old when your music taste hasn't changed since you were in high school.)

After all, I have too many other things to worry about than being cool. Such as:

  • Doing well at my job.
  • Visiting family while they're still here and healthy.
  • Fostering my friendships.
  • Playing with my nieces and nephews before they turn into teenagers who are too "cool" for me.
  • Traveling as much as is physically and financially possible.
  • Investing in my marriage.
  • Reading my next book club book.
  • Doing what I can to help others in these weird, sh*tty times.

The beauty of this uncool mindset is that you're free to not be so focused on yourself, which frees up some space to think about others. Obviously, I still have priorities that involve my own personal well-being, but being hyperaware and self-analytical about whether you're looking, being, dressing, or acting cool is a full-time job that centers on you, you, you. It's also stressful! When you do what you actually want to do and what makes you happy, instead of what you feel societal or peer pressure to do, without shame and without giving a f*ck, that's when you're really able to live a fulfilling life.

Depression Has Many Moods and Faces

This story was originally posted on Girl and the Bay.

Every morning I wake up and check the multiple social media platforms on my phone. Like, I actually set my alarm for about an hour earlier than I need to wake up to make time for a little morning scrolling to catch up on everything from The Skimm, memes, politics, and those 30-second Tasty videos (I know you're all guilty of reading up on recipes you'll probably never end up preparing IRL).

This morning, I came across an incredibly moving video. One that just seemed all too familiar and hit a very deep-rooted chord of my heart. The video was posted on Twitter by Chester Bennington's (the brilliant singer/songwriter/frontman of Linkin Park) wife, Talinda Bennington. Chester was laughing and joking with his family - trying out those disgusting jelly beans inspired by Harry Potter - just hours before he passed away tragically.

Chester Bennington took his own life at 41 years old in July of 2017. The video today, the news of his passing . . . they just really weigh heavily on my heart. Suicide happens all of the time, but that doesn't mean the news should ever feel any lighter. It just moves me in a different way now since losing a friend in 2016 to a lifelong battle with depression. I'd be lying if I told you that it doesn't send me down a spiral of thoughts, steps retraced and questioning so many things about the human heart and mind, and why we do the things we do.

While fans and many of his friends were incredibly shocked by the news, Chester's lifelong struggle with depression wasn't kept a secret. Bennington was pretty open through the years about the trauma suffered during his childhood. His parents divorced when he was 11 and he was sent to live with his father, a police detective who specialized in child sex abuse cases. It wasn't until years later that Bennington revealed that he was a victim of sexual abuse at the hands of an older male friend beginning at just 7 years old.

"It escalated from a touchy, curious, 'what does this thing do' into full-on, crazy violations," Bennington told Kerrang! in 2008. "I was getting beaten up and being forced to do things I didn't want to do. It destroyed my self-confidence. Like most people, I was too afraid to say anything. I didn't want people to think I was gay or that I was lying. It was a horrible experience. The sexual assaults continued until I was 13." Chester eventually told his father about the abuse, but chose to not press charges against his abuser after finding out he too was a victim of past sexual abuse. "I didn't need revenge," he told The Guardian later.

As a teen, Bennington began using cocaine, opium, LSA, and meth. "I was on 11 hits of acid a day," Chester told Metal Manner magazine. "I dropped so much acid I'm surprised I can still speak! I'd smoke a bunch of crack, do a bit of meth and just sit there and freak out. Then I'd smoke opium to come down." He shared that he was bullied throughout high school. "I was knocked around like a rag doll at school, for being skinny and looking different," he later shared.

He overcame many of his struggles and built a very noteworthy career, created strong friendships, two marriages and five children. Bennington was incredibly transparent about his trips to rehab, long stints of sobriety, and skeletons from the past that would come back and haunt him from time to time.

But, see, that's the thing about suicide . . . you never really expect it to happen.

Even with the awareness he'd bring to not only his personal lifelong struggle with mental health, but also as an advocate to promote understanding around the stigmas of depression - friends and family were still very much in shock when he took his own life. But, see, that's the thing about suicide . . . you never really expect it to happen.

Cameron Strang, the head of Linkin Park's label, Warner Bros Records, said in a statement after Bennington's death, "Chester Bennington was an artist of extraordinary talent and charisma, and a human being with a huge heart and a caring soul. Our thoughts and prayers are with his beautiful family, his bandmates and his many friends. All of us at WBR join with millions of grieving fans around the world in saying: we love you Chester and you will be forever missed." Chester was loved and adored by many - family, friends, strangers - but that didn't make his struggle with mental health magically disappear.

The reason why I even felt compelled to write about such a heavy topic is because I couldn't relate more with the video that Chester's wife posted. Depression has many faces and moods. It never looks the same. It's also not always obvious. I think it's easy for many to look at a situation from the outside and think it had to have been obvious to those who would interact with him on a daily basis. My stomach turned when I saw comments on the video saying things like, "His laughter is so over the top. It's so obvious to me he was trying too hard to fake happiness. Why didn't his family notice he was depressed?!" It's one of those things that is just so much easier to assume or say when you're looking from the outside in.

Missing someone you love never really gets easier.

When one of my best friends passed away in 2016, I was one of the three who grew worried about her whereabouts and ended up discovering our worst nightmare first. I later found out I was the last person she communicated with. Even writing that out now still stings. Our sweet, thoughtful, vivacious, passionate, fiery, loyal, hilarious, spunky, sensitive friend (who had the best/loudest laugh you've ever heard btw) was no longer with us. Within less than five minutes of finding out this news, I was given power of attorney to help make decisions I would never wish upon anyone. To say my life changed completely that day (and the weeks to follow), feels like a total understatement. Dealing with my shock, delivering the news to her father and her closest friends firsthand, helping plan her funeral, etc, etc. In ways it helped me stay busy during such a difficult time, but sometimes I wonder if it just delayed my grief. Who knows? Regardless, I continue to process the loss on a daily basis whether it's through a smile at the best of memories, misty eyes or that gut wrenching feeling when I want to text her a screenshot of a meme only she would laugh at and remember she's not going to respond with a text back. Missing someone you love never really gets easier.

I believe that you never get "over" losing a loved one, but you learn to cope and heal over time. The wound will scab, but you'll always have the scar. Scars are a sign of experience and strength . . . and maybe that's what healing looks like after losing someone you love. Showing off your scars to help others know they're not alone and that they will indeed survive their pain, if they ever experience something similar.

Believe it or not, one of the first and most frequently asked questions my best friend (The three of us had been roommates for years and kept in constant contact even after moving just a few minutes away from each other. We're talking an average of at least 50 texts a day and regular weekly hangouts.) and I received from those who heard the news was "How did you guys not know? Were you expecting this? Are you surprised?" The questions were so hard to swallow when it first happened, but it is still just as tough when I'm asked today or think about how I felt each time we were questioned. While I'm sure many were coming from a place of innocent curiosity and concern, the guilt we felt was already so incredibly heavy.

Many actually voiced that they thought my friend was the happiest she'd been in years . . . or maybe even ever. I thought that too. A week before she passed away she told me she'd just had the best birthday week she'd ever had and had never felt more loved or supported in her whole life. She also posted a photo a few months ago with myself and our other friend, captioned "BEST WEEKEND EVER." In the years I had known her, she truly never seemed happier. Some people wonder if that's an exaggeration, but it isn't. Others who knew told me they had no idea she had ever struggled with depression and were incredibly shocked to hear she'd ever struggled. Again, depression doesn't always look the same . . . it has many, many moods. Sometimes it's very visible and many times it goes unnoticed.

You're always fighting for them to turn the corner and they're actually fighting so much harder than anyone else to find joy in the everyday.

When a loved one is struggling openly with depression, they don't want to be reminded of their sadness when they're experiencing pure happiness and joy. As someone who loves them deeply, all you want to do is savor those happy moments and make them last long enough for them to know they can experience that joy more often. You're always fighting for them to turn the corner and they're actually fighting so much harder than anyone else to find joy in the everyday.

Those who turn to suicide often don't get enough credit for how long and how hard they fought the hopeless thoughts that frequently raced through their minds. Some may feel differently about that last sentence. Some may say it's controversial or that it doesn't align with their beliefs. I'm OK with that. I'm OK with that because I believe we don't talk about this enough. We don't take the time to talk about anxiety and depression - whether it's short-term, long-term, lifelong, or circumstantial. We need to stop being afraid of being more vocal about this. I truly believe the more it's talked about, the more people struggling will come forward and feel comfortable being vulnerable. Many who take their own lives deal with feelings of extreme loneliness and are convinced their loved ones will be happier when they no longer have to deal with their ups, downs, extreme behavior, closed doors . . . the list goes on. Talking about anxiety, depression and suicide will alleviate that feeling of being misunderstood in solitude. I'm not saying it will solve it, but I am saying it will make a difference and with an issue like this, any step forward is a big win.

Depression and anxiety do indeed have many faces and moods. The video Talinda Bennington posted reminds us of the tragic and unfortunate death of her husband, but it also reminds me of the overwhelming grief and guilt loved ones experience after they lose a loved one.

I really questioned whether I should share about such a raw topic. Wondering if it would make others uncomfortable, if it's too heavy, if it seems insensitive or gratuitous to post this. But in the end, I know my sweet friend (who is actually my inspiration for creating this site and continues to inspire me on a daily basis) would want nothing else but to bring awareness around this important and very real issue. If there's the slightest possibility that reading my thoughts help even one person who is struggling with depression, trying to pick up their broken heart after losing a loved one, or just overall awareness . . . then it's the right move.

A therapist I sought out after losing my friend pointed me to this post on Lifehacker. While it's incredibly simple, it helped me break down my thoughts and answer questions that had been swirling around in my head. Often, I pull it back up and revisit the content. It's never an easy thing to lose a loved one and I hope this helps you or someone you know like it did me.

If you've read this far . . . thank you. I know this was long and I know it was heavy. Finally, and definitely most importantly, if you're considering suicide, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255 in the US) or speak to someone you know. There's always an alternative and, despite how hopeless you may feel right now, the help you need is there when you need it. Make the intentional decision to look for it. Make the choice to ask for help. You're worth it. You're not alone. Even the darkest of moments do not have to be the end. After all, the darkest nights produce the brightest of stars. Please reach out.

Kate Winslet's Best Mood-Boosting Self-Care Tip? Throw Out Your Scale

Kate Winslet may be casually doing her own stunts in sub-zero temperatures, but there's one thing she has firmly said no to: the scale. In a recent interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, the actress shared her health tip while promoting The Mountain Between Us with Idris Elba.

Kate began by explaining a particularly challenging stunt that basically involved her falling through frozen ice about seven times. When asked why she decided to do her own stunts for the film, she replied, "Well, why would you not?"

Kate then detailed the stunt wherein Idris lifts her limp body out of the ice. "To not be able to help Idris as he pulls me out of this ice hole," Kate said, "That upset me." She then added, "Pulling my body out of the water - I don't know how much I weigh. I haven't weighed myself in 12 years. Top tip, it's a great move!"

Though some people like to use scales to track their progress, scales don't always reflect what's really going on in your body. Instead, it's better to look at other indicators, like your energy level and how your clothes are fitting. It definitely seems like Kate is on to something with this tip. Watch her hilarious interview, above.

Donald Trump has finally addressed the crisis taking place in Puerto Rico - but not in the way that millions of Americans stranded without power or safe living conditions on the island were probably hoping. In a series of tweets sent on Sept. 25, the president called out Puerto Rico's debts "to Wall Street and the banks" which he said "sadly, must be dealt with." He did not, however, offer increased federal assistance or even his condolences during the American territory's time of need.

Though Trump was quick to bring up Puerto Rico's debt in the midst of the island's turmoil, it appears the president forgot about one person who played an unsavory role in their current financial crisis: himself.

According to Buzzfeed News, Trump took over the management of a failing Puerto Rican golf course back in 2008 and vowed to revitalize it with his business savvy. In typical Trump fashion, his first move was to slap his name on the property, renaming it Trump International Golf Club Puerto Rico. Despite promising to contain the course's expenditure, the golf club's expenses ballooned by 22 percent under Trump's watch. Millions of dollars in government-backed bonds were borrowed to finance the operation, and Trump's central role in the organization was used as a selling point to attract prospective investors.

But despite Trump's supposed business acumen, membership barely increased at all during his tenure as club manager. Meanwhile, Trump pocketed hundreds of thousands of dollars in fees from the failing project without ever stepping in to oversee its daily operations. In 2011, Trump International Golf Club Puerto Rico defaulted (surprise!) after it was unable to make its bond payments. The club eventually filed for bankruptcy in 2015, and Puerto Rico's taxpayers were left to deal with the nearly $33-million bill left behind by the failed business venture, exacerbating the territory's already desperate financial situation.

It's difficult to fathom how leaving taxpaying Americans to repay enormous debts and forcing them to fend for their lives after Hurricane Maria is in line with his "America-first" ideology. But if anyone knows how to sell it as such, it's probably Donald Trump.

Did Ryan Gosling Really Do an Entire SNL Skit About Avatar's Font? Yes, Yes He Did

In a truly absurd Saturday Night Live skit, Ryan Gosling is losing sleep over the font used in the Avatar logo - Papyrus, to be specific. In the cinematic video, Gosling is still upset about the graphic designer's use of the hated font. "He just highlighted 'Avatar', he clicked the drop-down menu, and then he just randomly selected Papyrus," Gosling says. When he's informed that more Avatar films are on the way, he continues to spiral. It's a truly ridiculous skit that works so well, thanks to Gosling's convincing and dramatic acting. Weightlifting, MyFitnessPal, and a Great Coach: Chelsea's Key to Weight Loss Success

Twenty-four-year-old Chelsea Martin of Colorado Springs, CO, had dreams of getting in figure-competitor shape, but "life got in the way," and she fell off the wagon.

Chelsea: Before

Fortunately, she had the drive to pick herself back up and equip herself with the necessary tools to get strong and follow her dreams. Her secrets to success? Weightlifting, MyFitnessPal for macro tracking, and a fantastic coach at Gold's Gym. Chelsea treated finding the perfect gym like finding the perfect college, and she found the right fit with a personal trainer who she meshed with immediately. Here's more on Chelsea's amazing story of hard work and determination, with incredibly simple tips you can apply to your own healthy journey.

POPSUGAR: What made you decide to start your weight-loss journey?

Chelsea Martin: I have always been intrigued by fitness and the human body - the limits it can both withstand and break through. My fascination with exercise began in high school. I was never the skinniest or most athletic (although Lord knows I tried!). I would watch figure competitions on TV or on the internet and wonder what it must be like to look like those women on stage. Not only did I envy their physical beauty, but the confidence that these women portrayed. It was a delicate finesse between total badass and radiant beauty.

Self-confidence is something I feel everyone struggles with at some point or another, and I had been struggling for years. I was investing my time in the perceptions of others and their approval of my actions. When I took a job across country, where I had no family or friends, I realized that I could be anyone I wanted to be. I got to choose how I wanted to start my new life, and that's when I put my focus on what my heart desired for myself. Being a figure competitor was always a dream, but I decided I was going to make it a reality. I wanted to be someone for girls to look up to. I wanted people to see me and see that same strong, confident beauty that I had so badly wanted for so many years.

I hate to say that "life happened," but essentially that's what it came down to. Going through college, I was so wrapped up in school, work, family, and trying to balance a social life that I let exercise and diet fall off the grid. I aimlessly fueled my body with whatever I could find. I also sought food for comfort; I'm very much a stress eater. Working 12-hour night shifts, going through nursing school, and many, many late nights with very few hours of sleep certainly didn't help that.

PS: What drew you to Gold's Gym, specifically?

CM: Picking a gym is like picking a college. A lot of people will tell you "it just felt right" or "it just feels like home." Initially, I thought to myself, "Where can I go that will provide me the greatest opportunity at being successful in my journey to competing?" There are many commercial gyms near my neighborhood, but Gold's was the only gym that made me FEEL like I was in the right place. As I surveyed all the different barbell and dumbbell options, cable machines, cardio equipment, and other amenities, I was impressed.

However, it wasn't WHAT Gold's Gym offered, it was WHO . . . from the front-desk workers to my coach to the other members working out every day, bettering themselves. Gold's offers an environment that makes me want to come back every day so I can share my journey with others and they can continue to motivate me with theirs. Gold's has honestly become my family out here, and going to work out is the best part of my day because I get to spend time with people who genuinely invest in helping others better themselves and reach goals that may have seemed unattainable.

"Lifting weights consistently and being mindful of my diet by tracking macros has been the most effective for my body."

Before Gold's, I feel like I had tried just about everything! I have tried DVDs, YouTube exercise videos, different diet fads, detoxes and cleanses, diet pills, hours of cardio . . . you name it. Lifting weights consistently and being mindful of my diet by tracking macros has been the most effective for my body. Everyone's body reacts differently to different methods, but this has been the longest-lasting and most rewarding. I have energy, and it has given me a healthier relationship with nutrition and how I am fueling my body.

PS: What's your favorite way to work out?

CM: Weightlifting, hands down. Dumbbells, barbells . . . get me to a rack, and I'm one happy girl.

PS: What's your weekly exercise schedule?

CM: I usually train my big muscle groups (back, shoulders, and legs) twice a week. I will sometimes supplement those muscle groups with more targeted accessory muscles. For example, since I lift shoulders twice a week, one day may be shoulders and chest, and the other day may be shoulders and arms. I will typically do cardio three to four times a week, either fasted in the morning or post-workout to keep my metabolism revved after I leave the gym. I try to mix it up between HIIT and steady-state to help keep my workouts fresh.

Chelsea: After

PS: How do you keep workouts exciting?

CM: When it comes to weights, I like to vary the volume and intensity. For example, one of my leg days during the week may focus more on heavier weight with less reps, and then my second day will focus on a higher volume of reps with lighter weight to help burn that muscle that has already been fatigued earlier in the week. I also don't just lift. I like to add in resistance bands, plyometric exercises, and various bodyweight exercises to help keep my muscles confused. Each of these methods helps target different muscle fibers, again keeping my body confused and helping to burn fat.

PS: How much weight have you lost?

CM: Since I started exercising regularly (October 2016 to June 2017), I've lost 26 pounds.

PS: What was the first big difference, other than the number on the scale, that really made you feel proud and excited?

CM: When people I looked up to in the gym approached me and told me that I was motivation for them. Talk about a totally surreal feeling!

PS: How do you track your weight loss?

CM: I don't like to rely on the scale to measure my weight loss. I take a lot of progress pictures. Although it feels awkward, it is super validating to look back after a month, or even a week or two, and watch how your body is changing and adapting to your lifestyle choices. I also feel it is the healthiest way to track progress because you see YOU, not a number. I love when people guess my weight now, because nine times out of 10, they are way under.

PS: Do you count calories? What's the range of calories you eat per day?

CM: I don't count calories, but I do count macros. This has helped me identify what my body responds to the best as a fuel source and has taught me to be extremely mindful of what is in the food that I'm putting into my body.

"Taking progress pictures is the healthiest way to track progress because you see YOU, not a number."

I like to use the MyFitnessPal app on my iPhone. It's totally free, and it's super easy to use. It even has restaurant menus programmed so I can plan my meals ahead of time if I know where my friends and I are going for dinner. It was kind of tedious at first to track everything, but it helps give you an idea of where you're starting at and how you can manipulate your total carbs and fats and proteins for the day to make sure the food you are putting in your body is both delicious and beneficial for your fitness journey.

Chelsea: Before and After

PS: What are the healthy staples that are always in your fridge?

CM: Oikos Triple Zero yogurt, Quest or Oh Yeah! ONE protein bars, Kodiak Cakes (protein flapjacks), salted-caramel rice cakes with honey, peanut butter with apples, SmartPop! popcorn, and pickles.

PS: How do you strategize for meals out?

CM: MyFitnessPal app. Love it!! I seriously use it every time I must go out with family or friends to dinner. It is a lifeline for staying on track with my fitness journey.

PS: What role did Gold's Gym play in your journey? Would you recommend it?

CM: Gold's played a HUGE part in where I'm at today. Without Gold's, I would have never been connected with my amazing coach, Max, who has been my compass through this crazy fitness journey, helping me navigate macros and workouts. He's also been a huge support system, both in and out of the gym. I can honestly say that without Max's help and genuine passion to help me crush this seemingly impossible fitness goal, I would not have been successful. I would highly recommend personal training and classes at Gold's. The staff are encouraging, upbeat, and real. They invest in you and want to see you succeed. As a client, that makes me want to work harder because I don't want to let them down. It's a healthy motivator.

PS: What advice do you have for anyone starting out on a weight-loss journey?

CM: The hardest part is starting. Make a goal. Write it down. And when you wake up every morning, remind yourself of that goal and envision it happening. I'm a firm believer that we are magnets: what we put into the universe, we attract to ourselves. Put out positive energy and good vibes; you will get it right back. Be encouraging and motivating to others, and they will encourage and motivate you. Envision your dreams as a reality, and if you work hard enough, they soon will be.
