A Personal Trainer Wants You to Know This About Her "Flat" Belly

Madalin Giorgetta is a certified personal trainer who felt compelled to post these side-by-side photos for two important reasons. One has to do with how her belly looks. For all the women who ask Maddy if she has a flat stomach all the time, she shares, "No, no I don't 🙈 My stomach is flat for about 10% of the day," and she mostly looks like the photo on the left.

Belly bloat wasn't the only reason for this Instagram post. Maddy wanted to address a more serious topic: social media and body image. She said that a woman recently commented on one of her Instagram photos, saying she was going to unfollow Maddy because she made her feel bad about her body.

You'd think Maddy would have been upset or offended, but she felt "it was not malicious or mean, it was just honest." She went on to say, "If I ever made anyone feel bad about their body, I want them to unfollow me, because I only follow women who make me feel good ❤️."

Maddy told POPSUGAR, "I love following women on Instagram who have a similar body to my own. Long lean legs and big boobs will never be attainable for me, so I like to follow women who look similar to me and who project wicked self-confidence. I think, if they can be sexy and look like that, why can't I?" She said it's important to surround yourself with men and women who inspire, motivate, and lift you up, and "help you to accept the body that you were born with."

With that said, it may be time to take a closer look at your Instagram feed to make sure all the accounts you follow are supporting and encouraging your goals, not making you feel insecure or bad about them.

Trump Calls Las Vegas Shooting "An Act of Pure Evil"

President Donald Trump delivered solemn remarks on Oct. 2, condemning the mass shooting in Las Vegas which left at least 58 people dead and more than 500 people wounded and calling it "an act of pure evil."

"My fellow Americans, we are joined together today in sadness, shock, and grief," Trump read from a teleprompter set up in the Diplomatic Reception Room at the White House. "Last night, a gunman opened fire on a large crowd at a country music concert in Las Vegas, Nevada. He brutally murdered more than 50 people, and wounded hundreds more. It was an act of pure evil." Trump then ordered that the country fly all American flags at half-staff, and announced that he would be traveling to Las Vegas on Wednesday, Oct. 4, to meet with first responders, law enforcement, and the families of those affected by the mass shooting.

Trump initially responded to the events in Las Vegas by tweeting "My warmest condolences and sympathies to the victims and families of the terrible Las Vegas shooting. God bless you!" early Monday morning.

Trump's later on-camera remarks were uncharacteristically apolitical, calling for national unity in a time of great loss and heartbreak. Trump did not, however, address the ongoing need for gun control reform in the US nor the upcoming House vote on gun silencers – a subject which Hillary Clinton put at the forefront of her own personal statement in response to the tragedy.

"In times such as these I know we are searching for some kind of meaning in the chaos, some kind of light in the darkness," he said. "The answers do not come easy. But we can take solace knowing that even the darkest space can be brightened by a single light, and even the most terrible despair can be illuminated by a single ray of hope."

Read Trump's remarks in full below, or watch the recording of his address to the nation above.

My fellow Americans, we are joined together today in sadness, shock, and grief. Last night, a gunman opened fire on a large crowd at a country music concert in Las Vegas, Nevada. He brutally murdered more than 50 people, and wounded hundreds more. It was an act of pure evil.

The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security are working closely with local authorities to assist with the investigation, and they will provide updates as to the investigation and how it develops.

I want to thank the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and all of the first responders for their courageous efforts, and for helping to save the lives of so many. The speed with which they acted is miraculous, and prevented further loss of life. To have found the shooter so quickly after the first shots were fired is something for which we will always be thankful and grateful. It shows what true professionalism is all about.

Hundreds of our fellow citizens are now mourning the sudden loss of a loved one -- a parent, a child, a brother or sister. We cannot fathom their pain. We cannot imagine their loss. To the families of the victims: We are praying for you and we are here for you, and we ask God to help see you through this very dark period.
Scripture teaches us, "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." We seek comfort in those words, for we know that God lives in the hearts of those who grieve. To the wounded who are now recovering in hospitals, we are praying for your full and speedy recovery, and pledge to you our support from this day forward.

In memory of the fallen, I have directed that our great flag be flown at half-staff.

I will be visiting Las Vegas on Wednesday to meet with law enforcement, first responders, and the families of the victims.

In moments of tragedy and horror, America comes together as one -- and it always has. We call upon the bonds that unite us -- our faith, our family, and our shared values. We call upon the bonds of citizenship, the ties of community, and the comfort of our common humanity.

Our unity cannot be shattered by evil. Our bonds cannot be broken by violence. And though we feel such great anger at the senseless murder of our fellow citizens, it is our love that defines us today -- and always will, forever.

In times such as these, I know we are searching for some kind of meaning in the chaos, some kind of light in the darkness. The answers do not come easy. But we can take solace knowing that even the darkest space can be brightened by a single light, and even the most terrible despair can be illuminated by a single ray of hope.

Melania and I are praying for every American who has been hurt, wounded, or lost the ones they love so dearly in this terrible, terrible attack. We pray for the entire nation to find unity and peace. And we pray for the day when evil is banished, and the innocent are safe from hatred and from fear.

May God bless the souls of the lives that are lost. May God give us the grace of healing. And may God provide the grieving families with strength to carry on.

Thank you. God bless America. Thank you.

The 3 Paint Colors Joanna Gaines Is Obsessed With Right Now

If you're looking for a quick and affordable way to give your home Fixer Upper-worthy style - and who isn't? - then the first person you should consult is Joanna Gaines. The designer behind dozens of breathtaking HGTV home makeovers is no stranger to the transformative (and wallet-friendly) power of paint. In fact, she loves paint so much, she created the gorgeous Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines paint collection. So what hues is Joanna personally loving right now? We recently had a chance to chat with Jo, and she revealed to POPSUGAR the three paint colors she can't get enough of.

The Bedroom

"Bedrooms are a great place to take a risk and use a little more color. I would love to see a client use Weekend in their bedroom. Like weekends, this color puts me at ease. It is the calming blue of retreat and relaxation."

The Bathroom

"In a bathroom, I like the idea of using something fresh and clean, like maybe one of my favorite grays, Wedding Band."

The Kitchen and Living Room

"For high-traffic areas like kitchens and living rooms, I would keep things simple and use a creamy, neutral white like Shiplap with True White trim color. They create a bright, clean space and offer a versatile backdrop for decor."

The company behind this perfect creation, The Pinskis, describes itself as a "DJ and a Chola on a mission to share the best pins," according to their Instagram bio. The duo have nine different pins of their own for sale on their website, and each of them will speak to a different part of your soul. We love the "Sana Sana" pin, but the triple A battery one that reads "Ponte las Pilas" is a close second favorite.

Rachel Lindsay Finally Addresses the "Derogatory Word" Vanessa Called Her on The Bachelor

Though Bachelor Nation is currently in a dry spell - stuck between the end of Bachelor in Paradise and the start of Arie Luyendyk Jr.'s season of The Bachelor - the reality show's past contestants have been keeping our thirst for spilled tea quenched. Most of the post-BIP attention has been focused on Dean, Kristina, and Danielle's cringe-worthy love triangle, but the spotlight has just shifted away from the trio and on to two women who competed for Nick Viall's heart on the 21st season of The Bachelor: Vanessa Grimaldi and Rachel Lindsay.

*Cue dramatic background music*

It all started when Danielle Lombard, another contestant on Nick's season and one-third of Bachelor in Paradise's most infamous love triangle, did a Reddit AMA ("Ask Me Anything") to answer fan questions. In the thread (most of which has since been deleted), a participant asked D-Lo to touch on some apparent drama that was brewing behind the scenes between Vanessa and Rachel. Though much of said drama wasn't really shown on screen, it was rumored that the two had bad blood, which D-Lo pretty much confirmed.

"Vanessa called Rachel something that was extremely derogatory," she explained on the Reddit thread. "From what I heard it was bad. Vanessa had to be separated for the rest of the show." Yikes. After this tidbit spread like wildfire among Bachelor Nation, Entertainment Tonight got to the bottom of things by getting in touch with Rachel for the scoop on what really happened between her and Vanessa - and it's pretty shocking.

"Vanessa told me that I used 'aggressive' tones with her, and I was very upset by that."
Rachel explained how she chose to distance herself from Vanessa while in the Bachelor mansion, but that Vanessa approached her one day to share how she felt about Rachel's attitude. "Vanessa told me that I used 'aggressive' tones with her, and I was very upset by that," Rachel told ET. "There are so many stereotypes placed on African-American women."

And what about that "derogatory word" Danielle referenced in her Reddit AMA? "She called me a 'bully', and for her to use that phrase was offensive to me," Rachel said. "She had no examples to match it . . . I also felt as a special education teacher who works with children, she was using the word frivolously."

It looks like there's way more than meets the eye when it comes to these shows. No word on whether Vanessa will respond to Rachel's claims, but the fact large chunks of D-Lo's Reddit thread were deleted certainly seems telling. We'll update this when additional, tea-worthy information becomes available.

How to Flush Out Salt Bloat Fast

Sometimes, those fries are calling your name and you can't say no - but the bloated feeling you get from the sodium overload isn't fun. The next time you feel like you've overdone it on the weekend, get rid of the bloat with these tips that flush out salt from your body.

  1. Drink up: The best way to debloat is to flush out excess salt by refilling that water bottle all day. Add extra help - and taste - by throwing a few fresh ingredients into your water to help get rid of those toxins. Detoxifying additions to water like ginger or lemon slices are delicious and effective at helping you feel your best.
  2. Eat these foods: Look for foods rich in potassium, since this electrolyte will help your kidneys flush out excess salt. When in doubt, think fresh fruit and veggies, since many have high levels of potassium. Bananas, strawberries, leafy greens, melons, citrus fruits - all of these are great sources of potassium. Here are more foods that are high in potassium; make sure you eat some of these to help get rid of that bloat fast.
  3. Stay on the move: Even if you don't feel like sweating out that excess salt, making sure you aren't being sedentary will help move things along and make you feel lighter on your feet. Keep your energy up and that excess salt moving out by taking frequent breaks from your couch or desk for a walk or stretch. Just be sure to stay hydrated no matter how long your workout.

This Mom's Emotional Post About Band-Aids Will Make You Realize How Fast Kids Grow Up

There comes a time in every parent-child relationship when you realize that your kid, who seemed to be in diapers five minutes ago, has actually grown up to be a mini adult. Quinn Kelly, a mother of four boys from Texas, had that very aha moment while hunting for a Band-Aid for her 9-year-old son one morning.

She described how this one ordinary task was actually the sign of something bigger for her oldest son:

As I quickly rush to find the band aid tin in our medicine cabinet, he quickly follows behind. As I begin digging for the perfect one, he peers into the tin with me.

I pull out a Star Wars band aid. The designed ones always make the boo boos better. I think to myself.

In mid thought, my son interrupts with, "Mom, are there any plain ones? I don't want ones with design."

"What?" I say with a gulp.

His sentence catches me off guard. My half drank coffee turns in my stomach. I turn and look at his face.

"But you always like the designed ones when you have a boo boo?" I question and demand all at once.

First it was Elmo. Then curious George. Then Transformers. Then Star Wars. I flashback to the corresponding birthdays that followed with these same themes.

"Yeah, mom. Maybe when I was four I liked the designs." He smiles back with his dimples on full display.

"But you are still . . ."

I stop and pause for a moment, but he fills in the blank for me.

"Nine. I'm nine now, Mom. So do you mind if I just take the plain one?"

Although Kelly realized that her son was right, he wasn't a little boy anymore, she was grateful that he still needed her help one way or another. "Mom, will you wrap it around my toe? I still need your help with that part," she wrote. "And then I hug him again. He may be too old for characters, but he still needs me for the wrap. And I'll take it. So I carefully wrapped it as best I could. Kind of like a hug. With a band aid. On his sweet little toe. And the realization that the characters are gone, but the need for the wrap is still there, wrapped my heart back with a hug too."

So the next time you're running around like a crazy person in the morning, take a second to cherish those moments when your kids need you, because they'll be all grown up before you know it.

8 Things You Never Knew About Trader Joe's, Straight From a Former Employee

I spoke to a former employee who worked at Trader Joe's for a year, and he gave me the inside scoop on how the company is run, the little-known details of the return policy, and what the point of those somewhat-annoying bells is. Spoiler alert: there's no real dirt (I tried!), but what I got was interesting, behind-the-scenes intel that made me an even bigger fan of the store.

There's a reason the customer service is so good.

Trader Joe's strategy in providing a quality customer-service experience is simple: overstaff. "They totally overstaff so that you don't feel like your stocking duties or your register duties trump interacting with customers - they encourage you to be nice to customers." That's why you can almost always find someone in a Hawaiian t-shirt or crew-member uniform walking around and waiting to help you find anything.

The employees try all the new products so they know what to tell customers.

"Each Trader Joe's has a break room, and they have one person who's in charge of cooking new stuff that the store gets and making it available for the entire staff who comes through the store that day to try it. They want you to try all the products so you can have an opinion so that when you recommend stuff to people, it's not baseless."

The pay is REALLY good.

This guy started out at Trader Joe's making $12/hour, which was above the state's minimum wage. You not only start out making a good amount, but it gets even better quickly. After three months of working more than 30 hours a week, you get health insurance and a 401K. You'll also likely get a raise once or twice a year. A friend of this employee worked at Trader Joe's for over five years and made $21/hour - that's an annual salary of $42K.

They donate all unsold food.

"Trader Joe's donates a ton of food. It's called 'spoils,' which just means it's not in perfect shape. There's nothing wrong with eating a lime with a couple brown spots, but if you wouldn't buy it and be excited about buying it, then it gets put with spoils and typically gets donated. They donate flowers, produce - everything - to local organizations."

There's a method behind the bell ringing.

You've sometimes noticed employees ringing bells while you're checking out, right? There's a method to the madness, and it's sort of like the store's secret language for various customer-service needs. "One bell means everyone to your register, which means the lines are getting too long and they need everyone at a register. Two bells means you need an employee to come over and help with something. For example, let's say the bag of spinach you bought is partially opened or looks bad; you ring two bells and an employee will come over and grab a new one for you. Three bells means a manager needs to come over."

Every store has an in-house artist.

"Literally all of the signage around the store is custom-made by two or three artists who hang out in the back and almost exclusively do that, and register work every once in a while." That's why every store has location-based art throughout the store - pretty cool, right?

You can return ANYTHING.

Seriously, you could open a bag of popcorn, try it, and bring it back if you didn't like it - for a full refund. "You see that a lot. You get people who come back and say, 'Hey, I tried it, but I didn't really like it.'" Excuse me while I go try every single thing in the snack aisle.

They strive to create an experience that's beyond grocery shopping.

"They really push this whole, 'we don't want you to feel like you're just grocery shopping' thing. They want it to be an experience - something that pulls you out of the monotony of your everyday life."

This Is How All Your Favorite Chefs Make Chicken Breasts

It's no secret that boneless, skinless chicken breasts aren't the most exciting ingredient, but they're certainly one of the most popular among home cooks. If you're feeling totally uninspired by your usual chicken recipes, allow these chef-approved tips to get you out of your rut. Here's how some of the best Food Network personalities and more of our favorite celebrity cooks transform their chicken breasts.

Alton Brown: Pounded Thin

Alton Brown's recipe is for chicken kiev, a popular dish that involves pounding the chicken breasts thin before stuffing them with herbed butter, coating them in breadcrumbs, and frying them. Alton's pro tip is to refrigerate the rolled-up, stuffed chicken breasts for at least an hour so they stay intact while being fried, so you don't have to worry about pesky butcher's twine.

Ina Garten: Lemon on Lemon

Ina's lemon chicken breasts recipe has a five-star rating out of more than 600 reviews, and it's easy to see why. She makes sure there's maximum lemon flavor by baking the chicken breasts with plenty of zest, juice, and wedges.

Chrissy Teigen: With a Brick

Yes, an actual brick. Once you try the technique in Chrissy Teigen's brick chicken recipe, you might never go back.

Rachael Ray: Spinach and Mushroom Stuffed

Rachael Ray's spinach- and mushroom-stuffed chicken is further proof that stuffing your food is always a good idea. A filling made of spinach, mushrooms, ricotta, parmesan, and garlic results in chicken that's anything but bland.

Giada De Laurentiis: Piccata

Giada's foolproof chicken piccata is the ultimate Italian-style chicken dinner. With a short list of impactful ingredients (butter, lemon juice, chicken stock, and capers), you can make your own restaurant-worthy chicken.

Ted Allen: Parmesan-Crusted

When in doubt, add parmesan cheese. Chopped host Ted Allen recommends baking the chicken in a crunchy crust of panko breadcrumbs and parmesan cheese.

7 Reasons an Airport Lounge Membership Is Totally Worth It

Let's be honest: airports aren't generally the place to relax. Although they serve as doorways to sandy beaches, historic cities, and beautiful nature retreats, the long lines, large crowds, and overprice food usually mean the "vacation" vibes don't start here.

But, luckily, airport lounges offer a much-needed escape from the terminal bustle. Depending on the membership, they can come with a steep price tag, ranging anywhere from $99 to more than $500 for an annual membership. There are others ways to snag membership - many major carriers offer a "pay with miles" option, and quite a few travel credit cards offer various lounge memberships as a perk. It is undoubtedly an investment, but if you're an avid traveler, the money you'll save in food and drink alone can add up quickly. Plus, you can't put a price tag on peace, quiet, and clean showers. You'll never be upset about a flight delay again.

1 Mom Had the Best Response to Being Told to Breastfeed in the Bathroom at a Wedding

It seems like every time you log onto social media, there's a story about a mom being shamed for simply breastfeeding her baby in public, but this mom is not taking any criticism. In a hilarious photo posted to the Facebook group Breastfeeding Mama Talk, a mom shows off her defiant move after one of her family members told her to head to the bathroom to breastfeed while attending a wedding.

Rather than taking care of business in a germ-filled restroom, the mom laughed it off and hit the dance floor with her little one in tow. She posted the picture with a caption that read: "*Someone* in my family told me to go to the bathroom to feed, I said 'Oh, it's okay.' Then went on the dance floor and danced with my husband! LOL."

7 Reasons Every American Should Be Worried About Alabama Senate Candidate Roy Moore

The Republican Party is not having a great year. From failing to meet the seven-year-old promise to repeal and replace Obamacare - despite holding a majority in Congress - to continuously playing defense for an erratic president, the establishment has spent far more time spinning its wheels than enacting any sort of political agenda. And if Roy Moore's Senate nomination win is any indication, things are about to get a whole hell of a lot worse for the GOP.

On Sept. 26, Alabama Republicans hit the polls to vote for the party's Senate candidate. The seat in question was the one vacated when President Donald Trump tapped then-Senator Jeff Sessions for the role of attorney general and had been held in the interim by GOP-backed Luther Strange. But despite his incumbent status and the heavy push on behalf of the White House and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Strange lost the special election to former Alabama state Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore.

While Moore hasn't secured the seat - he still has to face off against Democratic challenger Doug Jones in the December general election - there are more than a few reasons this early victory is a frightening one, and not just for the Republican establishment to which his win comes as a huge blow. The ideology that he stands for runs counter to much of what this country is built on, and the ascendancy of his particular brand of insurrectionism is something that nobody should be taking lightly.

Donald Trump may have been a disruption to the establishment when he was elected president, but he holds the office with a malleable set of values that he can be persuaded to drop or forget. Moore is far more dangerous, as he lives and dies by his beliefs and has no qualms about putting it all on the line in order to get what he wants. And having that type of person in office frankly poses a far bigger threat to democracy than we've ever faced before.

To give a bit more context, below are seven things every American should know about Moore, his politics, and the movement he represents. And if you're looking for an outlet after reading through, you've got lots of options to choose from to join in the fight against the right.

1. He has been removed from office for defying the law. Twice.

Moore was first ejected from the role of chief justice in 2003 when he disobeyed a court order to remove a 5,200-pound monument of the Ten Commandments from the lobby of the state's judicial building. He ran for the same position again in 2012, but was permanently removed in 2016 after he was caught encouraging probate judges to disobey the Supreme Court ruling that legalized same-sex marriage.

2. He has been on a vendetta against LGBTQ+ families for years.

In his ruling on a 2002 custody case involving a lesbian mother, Moore described homosexuality as "an inherent evil against which children must be protected." He's a vehement objector to the Obergefell v. Hodges ruling (see point No. 1), and when confronted about the fact that his beliefs were similar to those of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Moore responded by saying, "Well, maybe Putin is right. Maybe he's more akin to me than I know."

3. He uses religion and slurs in equal measure to bolster his cause.

"We were torn apart in the Civil War - brother against brother, North against South, party against party," Moore said at a rally in September. "What changed? Now we have blacks and whites fighting, reds and yellows fighting, Democrats and Republicans fighting, men and women fighting. What's going to unite us? What's going to bring us back together? A president? A Congress? No. It's going to be God." When confronted by those who were offended by his comments and found them tasteless, Moore did not back down, instead taking to Twitter to emphasize that the sentiment was religious in nature and therefore true. "'Red, yellow, black and white they are precious in His sight.' Jesus loves the little children of the world. This is the Gospel. If we take it seriously, America can once again be united as one nation under God."

4. He thinks 9/11 was God punishing America for rejecting his values.

Moore feels that because "we legitimize sodomy" and "legitimize abortion" in America, we are effectively rejecting the word of God. According to CNN, he expounded on this to a crowd at a campaign rally, saying that the 9/11 attacks were in retaliation for those stances: "Because you have despised His word and trust in perverseness and oppression, and say thereon . . . therefore this iniquity will be to you as a breach ready to fall, swell out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instance. Sounds a little bit like the Pentagon, whose breaking came suddenly at an instance, doesn't it?"

It also didn't stop there. "If you think that's coincidence, if you go to verse 25, 'There should be up on every high mountain and upon every hill rivers and streams of water in the day of the great slaughter when the towers will fall,'" Moore added, noting, "You know, we've suffered a lot in this country, maybe, just maybe, because we've distanced ourselves from the one that has it within his hands to heal this land."

5. He believes that Muslims shouldn't be allowed to hold office in the US.

Moore wrote an article titled "Muslim Ellison Should Not Sit in Congress" for Worldnetdaily.com in 2006. The first paragraph tells you everything you need to know about the rest of it: "Last month Keith (Hakim Mohammad) Ellison of Minnesota became the first Muslim elected to serve in the United States Congress and shocked many Americans by declaring that he would take his oath of office by placing his hand on the Quran rather than the Bible. Can a true believer in the Islamic doctrine found in the Quran swear allegiance to our Constitution? Those who profess a sincere belief in Allah say 'No!'"

6. Despite all the evidence, he still thinks Barack Obama isn't an American.

A CNN investigation uncovered that Moore was still saying that Obama wasn't American as recently as the end of 2016. Yes, that's right - even after Trump admitted that the birther thing wasn't real, Moore still believed it.

7. He honestly believes that parts of the US are under Sharia law.

Moore revealed this stance to Vox's Jeff Stein back in August. Here's the exchange, verbatim, because it's just too wild to describe:

Jeff Stein: "Some right-wing conservatives think Sharia law is a danger to America - do you?"
Roy Moore: "There are communities under Sharia law right now in our country. Up in Illinois. Christian communities; I don't know if they may be Muslim communities. But Sharia law is a little different from American law. It is founded on religious concepts."
Jeff Stein: "Which American communities are under Sharia law? When did they fall under Sharia law?"
Roy Moore: "Well, there's Sharia law, as I understand it, in Illinois, Indiana - up there. I don't know."
Jeff Stein: "That seems like an amazing claim for a Senate candidate to make."
Roy Moore: "Well, let me just put it this way - if they are, they are; if they're not, they're not. That doesn't matter. Oklahoma tried passing a law restricting Sharia law, and it failed. Do you know about that?"
Jeff Stein: "No, I don't."
Roy Moore: "Well, it did. The thing about it is it shouldn't have failed because it can be restricted because it's based on religious principles . . . Be careful on the religion [question] because it's very confusing. People don't explain the definition of religion. Put it right at the top, 'Religion is the duties you owe to the creator and the manner of discharging it,' per the United States Supreme Court, per Joseph Story. When you define religion, we get it all straight. You're free to worship Buddha and Muhammad. The reason that is free is because of Christian principles. Because of the two tables of the law - the first table can't be directed by government. He never gave Caesar the authority over the rights of conscience. In fact, it says it right here if you look right there, that the rights of conscience are beyond the reach of any human power; they are given by God and cannot be encroached on by any human authority without a criminal disobedience of the precepts of natural or revealed religion."
Jeff Stein: "I'd like to learn more about the communities in America you think are under Sharia law."
Roy Moore: "I was informed that there were. But if they're not, it doesn't matter. Sharia law incorporates Muslim law into the law. That's not what we do. We do not punish people according to the Christian precepts of our faith - so there's a difference. I'll just say: I don't know if there are. I understand that there are some."

Mom Says Sixth Pregnancy After 5 Devastating Losses Was "Terrifying"

Would You Tell on Your Friend If She Didn't Vaccinate Her Kids and Was Keeping It a Secret?

An anonymous reader got some candid advice after writing into the New York Times Magazine's advice column The Ethicist to ask how she could get her anti-vaxx friend to tell other parents and her kid's school about her decision. Kwame Anthony Appiah, a philosophy professor at New York University, answered her letter by explaining that although getting your children vaccinated is a choice, it should be approached from a logical standpoint.

The letter writer, who's currently pregnant, described the situation: "One close friend, Y, has two young (vaccinated) children, and lives near another friend, X. Both Y and I have suspected for some time that X chose not to vaccinate her child, and we have been trying to work up the courage to ask her. With the new pregnancy as an excuse, the task fell to me. It turns out that X has indeed chosen not to vaccinate. When telling me this, she also asked me to keep her answer private."

Worried for the safety of her unborn child along with the rest of the kids X's child plays with, the new mom found herself in an ethical conundrum. "While her choice is not one I would make, I am perhaps even more upset by her request that I conceal the information . . . Y and X's children play together, and we have regular gatherings with many young children present."

The professor wasn't shy about sharing his science-backed opinion on why getting your children vaccinated does more good than harm:

[...] One reason parents avoid vaccinations is some version of this thought: "If I decide to vaccinate my child and something bad happens, my child will have suffered at my hands." But if that's a sensible thought, so should this one be: "If I decide not to vaccinate my child and something bad happens, my child will have suffered at my hands." What's important is whether the likely results of vaccination are better than the alternative. And the answer, once exposure to measles is a possibility, is yes. Even if that weren't true, there would be a second reason for being vaccinated: If we all did it, we would get herd immunity.

Appiah took the opportunity to remind parents that there are tangible numbers that prove vaccinations help lower the outbreak of disease. "And just to be clear about how great those benefits are: In a typical year before the measles vaccine was available in the United States, the virus infected millions, sent tens of thousands to the hospital, gave encephalitis to at least a thousand and killed hundreds."

Given the possible risks, what should this soon-to-be mom do about her friend's decision to hide her kid's lack of vaccinations? Go with her gut and tell both the school and other parents if the mom won't disclose the information. "Tell X that she ought to inform Y about the situation and also tell the school the truth. Letting her do it shows that you acknowledge her request not to pass the information on yourself," the professor said. "Give her a few days. If she continues to leave Y in the dark, though, you can tell Y what you've learned."

The bottom line is when it comes to exposing children to diseases that have been mostly eradicated, everyone should be willing to disclose their stance. "But it isn't crazy to worry about the danger of contact with unvaccinated children; parents are entitled to know the status of the kids that their kids play with . . . And children aren't normally vaccinated until they are [1 year old], so older children with infant siblings need to be kept away from the virus, too."

This Old Tweet Sums Up Trump's Out-of-Touch Response to the Puerto Rico Crisis

As millions of Puerto Ricans continue to struggle with the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Maria, many have criticized the Trump administration for its lukewarm relief efforts. Though the Pentagon has sent military personnel to the storm-ravaged island and temporarily waived the Jones Act to ease the delivery of aid supplies, it's clear that US support was needed much sooner.

Over the weekend of Sept. 30, as conditions worsened in Puerto Rico, President Donald Trump spent time at his golf resort in New Jersey before attending the Presidents Cup tournament, where he dedicated a trophy to hurricane victims - a move widely derided by critics. Many were quick to denounce his presence at the tournament, and some even resurfaced one of his old tweets to prove just how contradictory it really was for him to be there.

Back in August 2016, Trump slammed then-President Barack Obama for going on a golfing trip instead of heading to Louisiana to assist with the catastrophic flooding there.

Fast forward to the present day, and Trump has done exactly what he condemned Obama for doing just one year ago. To be clear, Trump is scheduled to visit Puerto Rico on Oct. 3, but this begs the question, why not sooner? And it looks like many others have the same question in mind.

Why the Recycled Storyline on Grey's Anatomy Is Just So Frustrating

With a two-hour premiere, the 14th season of Grey's Anatomy has started off with a bang. In the wake of season 13 finale's devastating fire, it's clear that there's a lot to clean up. But it's more than just fire damage that needs attention. Meredith is acting strangely, and loads of couples are either on the rocks or completely broken. By the end of the episode, we've dealt with our fair share of emotional ups and downs (especially in the context of Owen's sister). And then, an explosive cherry on the dynamite cake: Amelia Shepherd finds out she has a massive brain tumor.

I'm going to set aside the messy and cobbled way this comes together - if you're curious, DeLuca's sister suddenly shows up to conduct a study about the female brain during orgasm, and therefore needs a bunch of women to masturbate in an MRI machine - and focus on the issue at hand. We've been here before. It's been almost 10 seasons since Izzie Stevens realizes she has cancer that has spread to her liver, brain, and skin. It doesn't matter that these are two different characters. We don't need another brain tumor on Grey's Anatomy.

I presume the shocking irony the writers were aiming for is that Amelia Shepherd, the best brain surgeon in the country, is probably the only person who could remove the tumor inside her own head. Even so, there are plenty of other brain diseases and disorders she could face that offer the same thematic richness. Why didn't we dig into the depression, substance addiction, and other emotional trauma Amelia is clearly dealing with? Why does all of her behavior suddenly get to snowball into brain cancer? As someone who's watched the show since season one, it seems like a cheap explanation and an easy way out.

I guess what's most upsetting is that the writers have kind of painted themselves into a corner. Izzie Stevens has already had a miraculous brain cancer recovery with a five percent survival rate. In order to keep the story unique and emotionally charged, it seems likely that Amelia might eventually die. After all, it's clear her marriage with Owen Hunt is broken, and he already has the newly returned Teddy Altman as a potential love interest. I guess the writers could surprise us all. I suppose Amelia's brain cancer story could offer new twists and turns. Even so, the prevailing feeling is that we've been here before and we've seen this before. This feels predictable, and frankly, I'm tired.

The Pros and Cons of All-Inclusive Resorts

Unlimited. What a great word. It's a word that sings in my ears, especially while planning a vacation. Beachside margaritas, moonlit meals, snacks around the clock, and an assortment of activities that cater to anyone and everyone, all included in the price of a hotel stay? Well, that's enough to send most of us sprinting for our closets, pulling our luggage down from the highest shelf, and begin packing our bags immediately. But there is a lot to consider when planning a vacation. While all-inclusive hotel experiences offer many perks, there are also drawbacks to staying behind the gated walls of a resort that literally has it all.

Disclaimer: I have stayed in five-star luxury all-inclusive resorts in Southeast Asia. These resorts are either positioned perfectly within city limits or nestled away deep in the jungle. They often come with personal butler service, offering delectable cuisine and outstanding amenities, but they also do not come cheap. This post strictly compares the pros and cons of the countless all-inclusives that line the ocean in the Caribbean and other popular beach destinations.

Pros

  • Everything Is Included: The biggest perk of staying at an all-inclusive resort is being able to leave your wallet in your hotel room's safe. As soon as the staff sees that coveted neon wristband strapped to your arm, there is nothing you can't do. Hit the pool or beach, take an ice cream break, and sip on a piña colada whenever you please. There's something to be said about having everything at your fingertips without needing to stow your cash deep in a beach bag, fearing it may get stolen.
  • Convenience: All-inclusive resorts are highly convenient. They are typically located close to a major airport and provide round-trip transportation from the runway to hotel grounds. Forget the hassle of renting a car or finding a cab, these modes of transportation are not necessary if you plan to spend your entire vacation on the resort grounds. Lounge chairs, pool towels, and umbrellas are available at all of the resort's swimming holes, and while you're lounging at the beach or pool, there's no need to get up for a drink, as servers are always on call, collecting orders for any beverage that you desire.
  • Food and Beverage: Food and drink are constantly at your disposal at all-inclusive resorts. Buffets are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Not to mention the poolside grills, ice cream shops, and specialty restaurants that often include Asian cuisine, seafood dinners, and all-American steakhouses. Feel like staying in for the night or eating breakfast in bed? A fully stocked minibar and room service are available 24 hours a day at most resorts.
  • Activities: Like action? All-inclusive resorts might be the perfect place for you. They offer a wide array of activities for all of their guests. From oceanfront yoga and water aerobics to nightly entertainment and occasionally casinos, there is truly something for everyone. Special activities exist for your little ones as well, so while they're hanging with kids their own age, you can grab a paddleboard or kayak and hit the high seas. Certain activities like jet skiing and spa treatments generally come at an additional cost but in many cases are worth the price.
  • Economical: When you plan a vacation, going over budget is an easy thing to do. Not only do you need to take into consideration hotel and flight costs, but also you must consider how much money you plan to spend once your feet hit the ground at your chosen destination. You need to set aside money for food, activities, shopping, and souvenirs. Booking all-inclusive eliminates worries of breaking the bank. Once the purchase button is pressed, you know how much your vacation will cost. Many packages even include airfare, making the deal that much sweeter.
  • Good For First-Time Travelers: New to traveling and nervous about planning a vacation on your own? Going all-inclusive is a perfect option. Simply book your dates, board that plane, and upon arrival, you will realize you never have to leave the resort. All-inclusive hotels come in all shapes and sizes. Some are family-friendly, while others are strictly for adults and couples. Find the one that suits your needs and rest assured the only thing you will worry about is how to split your time between relaxation and action-packed activities.

Cons

  • Less Authentic: Many all-inclusive experiences are less authentic than staying in a hotel in the center of the city. These resorts cater to the masses and provide their clientele (mostly from North America and Europe) with food, activities, and accommodations they find appealing. The food, which tends to be mediocre, won't necessarily reflect the cuisines perfected by your chosen destination. Instead, be ready for pizza, pasta, and other standard fare. Putting food aside, many people choose not to leave the resort. When you stay put, you are not offered the opportunity to experience the destination's culture. If you do want to leave the hotel, it might take a while to truly escape the resort-like atmosphere. Since many all-inclusive hotels are bundled together, it can sometimes be a bit of a trek to get to an authentic neighborhood and is probably not within walking distance.
  • Crowds: The sheer size of most all-inclusive hotels is an easy indicator of the insurmountable amount of guests at the resort, which can create a competitive environment. Making an all-inclusive vacation successful is a science. How many chairs do you want positioned together at the pool or beach? Well, if it's more than one, you better arrive early and claim your territory before the rest of the crowds come pouring in. Furthermore, if you want to eat at one or all of those specialty restaurants, you must make a reservation. These restaurants are extremely popular and likely a better option than one of the buffets. So make your reservations early - and not just early in the day. I suggest making all reservations, from specialty restaurants to spa treatments, upon arrival. This is the ultimate way to beat your competition.
  • Noise: All-inclusive resorts can be extremely loud. Obviously, if you are staying at a family-friendly hotel, the sound of screaming, splashing, happy children echos for miles. Of course, there's nothing better than seeing your children happy and smiling, but the sound is ever present and becomes a consistent soundtrack during your stay. Conversely, if you choose an adults-only resort, there is often music blasting so loud you can barely hear yourself think. You also may have to deal with obnoxiously loud people who do not take the open bar for granted. We all might have a bit too much to drink from time to time, but I've seen some crazy, unflattering, and outright embarrassing behavior coming from seemingly responsible adults, not just the 21+ crowd partying on Spring break.
  • Too Big: If you're looking for an intimate beachside vacation, an all-inclusive option is probably not for you. Sometimes the grounds are so large that shuttles exist to take you from your room to the beach or from the pool to the casino. There have been times I've actually gotten lost on resort property, needing to stop multiple times to ask people for directions. I love getting lost on the streets of a city I've never before seen, but getting lost at my hotel is more of an annoyance than a pleasure.
  • You Don't Experience Where Are You: It is beyond easy to get wrapped up in the amenities of your resort, so there's a good chance you may never leave the property's limits. You may have an amazing experience and go home saying you loved, for example, the Dominican Republic. However, the reality is, you never really saw the Dominican Republic. You never ate true Dominican cuisine or interacted with locals other than the staff at your hotel. You didn't love the Dominican Republic, you loved your resort. Once you experience a few all-inclusive resorts, they all start to feel the same, regardless of whether you're in the Bahamas or Mexico. If you always stay all-inclusive, eventually it feels like you could be anywhere.
  • The Fine Print: Read the fine print. Although your resort is all-inclusive, not everything is actually included. Every resort has its own list of amenities that come at an extra cost, but keep an eye out for things like off-property excursions, spa treatments, and motorized water sports. You might also find that many of these resorts charge an additional fee for the use of WiFi, telephone services, laundry, and certain top-shelf liquors. Before you book, make sure you fully understand what you're getting for your money and decide if the included amenities are worth it. Most of the time they are . . . but WiFi? Come on!

What to Do If You Go

You might think that all-inclusive resorts are perfect for you. Alternatively, you might think not in a million years. However, if you're smart about it, you can really experience the best of both worlds.

  • Leave the Resort: Remember, just because everything is included doesn't mean you are under lock and key. The first thing to do is consider your location. Choose an all-inclusive resort that is not nestled miles away from a major city or village. Pick a destination that is a quick cab ride to local restaurants, shopping, and activities that will allow you to embrace the culture, get a taste of some history, and get a glimpse into everyday life at your destination.
  • Ask For Advice: Not sure what to do or where to go? Ask. Talk to friends and/or family who have traveled to your destination before, and find out what they loved most about their visit. Also, be sure to visit blogs and websites that can recommend a multitude of activities that exist outside your resort. For even more thorough guidance, ask your hotel staff. Staff members are all locals and can often recommend surprising places to visit that even websites like TripAdvisor might not be aware of. Finally, don't forget to visit the concierge . . . that's what they're there for! Get out there and eat the most authentic food in town, meet the locals, and barter with vendors selling handmade goods at straw markets.
  • Book Excursions: If you're uncomfortable venturing out on your own, there are plenty of excursions available to book that will whisk you away from the beach and bring you to ancient ruins, show you interesting museums, or even take you on a guided ATV tour. These excursions are extremely convenient since they usually begin and end at your resort. If you're feeling a bit more adventurous, rent a car and explore on your own. Grab a GPS or a map and hit the road, making your own adventure.
  • Do Your Research: If you want to leave hotel grounds, it is absolutely essential to do your due diligence. I have visited locations where it is simply not safe to leave the security of the resort. Do your research before picking a destination. Make sure your resort is in an area of town that is safe to travel solo without the supervision of a guide. If you want to get out and explore new territory, pick a resort that is close to a popular town or city.

Hillary Clinton Says "Our Grief Isn't Enough," Slams NRA After Las Vegas Shooting

In the wake of the mass shooting in Las Vegas which that at least 58 people dead and more than 500 wounded on Oct. 1, Hillary Clinton offered her condolences to those affected and issued a call to action against the largest gun advocacy group in the country, the NRA.

"Las Vegas, we are grieving with you-those who lost loved ones, the responders, & all affected by this cold-blooded massacrem" the former presidential candidate and Secretary of State wrote on Twitter. "The crowd fled at the sound of gunshots. Imagine the deaths if the shooter had a silencer, which the NRA wants to make easier to get."

Clinton was referring to the fact that survivors of the Las Vegas shooting knew to seek shelter after hearing gunshots ring out across the Strip, something that would not have happened had the shooter used a silencer. The House is set to vote on legislation this week that includes a provision that would deregulate the sale of silencers.

The former First Lady also addressed the limitations of "thoughts and prayers," encouraging her followers to take a stand against the NRA in order to prevent future violent acts – regardless of political views or previous stances. "Our grief isn't enough," Clinton wrote. "We can and must put politics aside, stand up to the NRA, and work together to try to stop this from happening again."

The Decapitated Body Isn't What Surprised Neighbors About This Gory Scene

When Greenville, Tennessee resident Johnny Riddle drove past his neighbor's house the other morning, he got a gory surprise: a body was seemingly decapitated beneath the garage door. "There's a guy laying in his driveway, with two big bloody handprints on side of the house," he said in a frantic call to 911 uncovered by WJHL. "It looks like he was dead, I don't know I didn't stop I just came on to work," he continued. Fortunately, the body wasn't a body at all: just leaves stuffed with paper and food coloring and hair gel for blood. The entire gory display was for Halloween – as deputies from the sheriff's office found out after rushing to what they thought was a crime scene. Homeowner Joseph Lovergive explained the misunderstanding to WJHL, saying Halloween is his and his daughter's favorite time of year and they love to decorate accordingly. Upon learning it was a joke, Johnny says he wasn't angry, just relieved. Even the deputies had to admit it was pretty funny. As for the rest of the neighbors, more than being shocked by the bloody body, they couldn't get over the fact that the Lovergives had put up Halloween decorations more than a month before the holiday.

Ikea Just Bought TaskRabbit, So We'll Never Have to Build Our Own Furniture Again

Have you ever hired TaskRabbit to build that baffling Ikea furniture for you? If so, you're not the only one who outsourced the unpleasant labor to the tech startup, known for virtually matching independent workers with gigs. And it seems Ikea has taken notice as the Swedish mega-retailer is reported to have just purchased TaskRabbit for an undisclosed sum, solidifying a partnership they've been experimenting with in the UK and thrusting them further into the tech-savvy times. Spoiled by Amazon, today's shoppers expect lighting-fast delivery and easy installation options. Ikea has previously offered neither, but this acquisition will hopefully change that. The purchase is part of Ikea's larger strides to catch up with the times and better accommodate online shoppers, which also included launching an augmented reality app earlier this month. Seems like shoppers can look forward to more than stylish, affordable furniture from Ikea.

7 Characters Who Could Be American Horror Story: Cult's True Leader

The fourth episode of American Horror Story: Cult took viewers back to the days leading up to the 2016 election, and in the process, it shortened the list of suspects who could be the true cult leader. In "11/9," we watch as Kai recruits Harrison, Meadow, Gary, and Beverly to his cause, so that means they're all followers, not leaders. The episode goes out of its way to make us believe in the Cult of Kai, but there's still some doubt surrounding the idea that he is the mastermind behind this chaos-centric grab for power. AHS loves its twists, so there's no way this season is going to be straightforward. The real AHS: Cult leader could be hiding in the plain sight while Kai acts as their charismatic proxy.

Weed Candles Are a Real Thing, and They're Awesome

Looking for a new way to unwind? Kushed Candles wants you to relax by lighting one of its scented candles - but this isn't your usual aromatherapy. Cannabis essential oil is the base of its fragrant blends. Yes, we mean cannabis as in marijuana. "At Kushed, we wanted to create fragrances that were sexy and energizing, soothing and peaceful. Scents that would clear the mind and ease tension," it writes on its website. And, it clarifies, this isn't the dank stench you might typically associate with weed, writing, "the aroma of cannabis essential oil is probably not what you might imagine. Earthy, peppery and faintly sweet, its scent is alluring and sensual."

The cannabis oil is blended with other exotic essential oils in the hand-poured soy wax candles to create unique relaxing scents, including Sadhu, which blends warm sandalwood and fruity plumeria; CaliforniaDream which has earthy patchouli and sweet tuberose; and the more traditional LavenderKush, which layers atop cannabis with peaceful lavender and sage. For the purist, there's the signature QueenGreen made of fresh cut cannabis delicately infused with hints of ylang ylang, rosewood, and mandarin. Curious? You can head to Kushed Candles' website to pick your favorite fragrance from three different glass jar sizes and one travel tin ranging in price from $16-$48. From there, all that's left to do is get lit.

The Kitchen in Rachael Ray's Hampton's House Isn't What We Expected, but It Makes Perfect Sense

Rachael Ray's bubbly yet down-to-earth personality can be seen in every inch of her gracious Southampton's home. The cooking star just listed her three-bedroom, five-bathroom French Normandy-style abode for a cool $4.9 million. The chic 3,000-square-foot property sits on a whopping 6.1 acres located adjacent to the meticulously maintained courses of the elite Southampton Golf Club located directly next door.

In a video tour of the house, Aria Design consultant Michael S. Murray says the home is "meant for you to enjoy. It's unpretentious. It's beautifully crafted, but it's really about the people who use it." In this light, it makes sense that, while the home spares no expense, there's nothing precious about it. Even the light and airy kitchen, Rachael's domain, is highly functional without being over the top. It's more attuned to fixing choup and sammies than multicourse dinners. The bedrooms are tastefully appointed, the gunite pool is simple yet beautiful, and the "writing shed" is cozy. In other words, this house defines understated elegance.

It's being represented by Martha P. Gundersen of Brown Harris Stevens. Tour every inch of the yummy property for yourself in the video above.

9 Creepy-Crawly Bug Makeup Looks, Because It's Finally October, Witches

It's finally October, which means, in the immortal words of Missy Elliott, it's time to get your freak on. As beauty junkies are well aware, there are so many ways to do the most this Halloween.

When we saw the photo above of spider lip art that was so lifelike, it almost made us call an exterminator. The look, which was first spotted by Yahoo Beauty, got our minds wondering: how many other creepy-crawly ways are people channeling insects for Oct. 31? As it turns out, so many makeup enthusiasts are turning to our many-legged friends (or foes, depending on how squeamish you are) for beauty inspiration. And no, this isn't the cute monarch butterfly kind you're used to seeing.

Although discovering a spider or cockroach crawling around would turn us into a hot mess IRL, seeing fake bugs on the faces of these Instagrammers brings us nothing but sheer delight. Ahead, why don't you celebrate the beginning of the best month of the year with some hair-raising makeup looks that just might make you rethink your pretty princess costume.

San Juan Mayor Tearfully Tells the White House, "This Is Not a Good News Story"

Following the devastating Hurricane Maria, Puerto Rico continues to struggle without power, water, and transportation off the island. On Sept. 28 - over a week after the hurricane hit Puerto Rico - the current administration's Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security Elaine Duke said she was "satisfied" with the progress being made. Her statement was later shared with San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz, who was shocked.

Speaking with the press, Secretary Duke said, "I am very satisfied . . . I know it is really a good news story in terms of our ability to reach people and the limited number of deaths that have taken place in such a devastating hurricane."

In an interview with CNN the following day, Mayor Cruz tearfully reacted to Duke's statement. "Well, maybe from where she's standing it's a good news story. When you're drinking from a creek, it's not a good news story," she said. "When you don't have food for a baby, it's not a good news story. I'm sorry, but that really upsets me and frustrates me. I would ask her to come down here and visit the towns, then make a statement like that, which frankly, is an irresponsible statement."

Cruz continued, "Dammit, this is not a good news story. This is a 'people are dying' story. This is a 'life or death' story." Adding, "This is a story of devastation that continues to worsen because people are not getting food or water . . . Where is there good news here?" Watch her emotional response above.
