Exclusive: Winky Lux's New Palette Will Feed Your Cat Obsession
Winky Lux has truly outdone itself. After winning us over with its viral color-changing jelly lipsticks and hosting the Unicorn Carnival of our dreams, the brand has now debuted an eye-shadow palette inspired by the only thing you love more than makeup: cats.
The Kitten Palette ($25), out today, features nine eye shadows that feel as velvety as a feline's fur. We got our hands on the new launch early and can confirm the shadows are kitten-soft to the touch but, even better, are superpigmented, creamy, and blendable.
The palette has nine shades in four finishes: holographic, matte, satin, and glitter. The hues are a unique mix of both cool and warm tones with Fall-ready copper, brown, and cranberry right alongside shimmery chrome and iridescent lavender. On top of all that goodness, the packaging just begs for an Instagram. It's millennial pink with a floral print adorned with little cat heads. Too cute.
Get an exclusive look at the purrr-fect (sorry) palette, right this way:
32 Things You Never Knew About Apple Stores, Straight From Employees
They call them "Geniuses" for a reason! If you've ever owned or plan on owning an iPhone, Mac computer, or other Apple product, prepare to have your mind blown. We've reached out to several former Apple store employees (who will remain anonymous) for the insider tips and the shocking stories you need to know. Here's what they told us.
Money- and Time-Saving Shopping Secrets
1. You can self-checkout in the store. Through the Apple Store app, you can scan the barcode and pay via your Apple ID. This is limited to items on the sales floor, which is mostly computer and iPhone accessories.
2. Use ApplePay. It's way faster than a credit card.
3. Personal pickup is your friend. Apple has a free service where you can reserve an item at a store, prepay, and get in and out quickly.
4. Everyone can take advantage of the higher education discount online. In person, they will ask to see your college ID, but there's no verification online.
5. Your Apple-branded chargers and headphones are all covered under a one-year warranty. Even if you are out of warranty, it's less expensive to get them replaced through the Genius Bar than buying new ones.
6. Every store has free workshops. And you can attend an unlimited amount of times.
What It's Really Like to Work at an Apple Store
7. It's really hard to get a job there. Apple has a lower acceptance rate than Harvard. The easiest way to get hired is have a current employee refer you.
8. NSOs (New Store Openings) are a big deal. This is especially true if it's in a major city like New York, Hong Kong, and Barcelona. Executives from all around the world will fly in for the event. It's a huge sense of pride to be on an NSO team.
9. Apple's customer service training is based on the Ritz Carlton. New-hire training is three weeks. You learn the APPLE steps of service (Approach, Probe, Present, Listen, End), as well as the three A's of customer support (Acknowledge, Align, Assure). You'll start using these steps on your friends and significant others.
10. The pay is not great. But it is getting better.
11. The benefits are awesome. You receive part-time health benefits, employee purchase stock program at 15 percent discount, $100 a month for commuting, 401K match, and an employee discount.
12. Certain words and actions are off limits. These include:
- "Unfortunately" becomes "As it turns out."
- "I don't know" becomes "Let's find out together!"
- No pointing - use an open hand if you must point something out.
- "Crash" becomes "doesn't respond."
13. Each shift starts with a "daily download." After checking your email (you can't check your email unless you are in a store), the daily download is a 15-minute pep rally for the day. Team metrics, initiatives, and current programs are discussed.
14. Attendance and punctuality are strictly enforced. This is by far the most common reason for employees being involuntarily terminated.
15. Apple forbids its employees from talking about their job on social media and posting pictures of themselves in their uniform shirts. Because of this, there's an underground community of anonymous employees (like Genius Bar Tales on Twitter) who take to social media to vent their frustrations. Everyone reads them and tries to guess if they know who's behind them.
16. We see those comments you write in the surveys. If you fill out an online survey about your store experience, it will get back to the employee who helped you. Each employee gets an NPS (net promoter score) that is used during promotion and raise time.
17. When you leave voluntarily, you get a "clap out." The Apple store is no stranger to clapping. We clap for everything. If you ever see employees randomly cheering in the middle of the day, it's likely a clap out, given to send off an employee on their last day.
18. Product Launches are really exciting. Although we don't get to see the product before it comes out, we train on it in the weeks leading up.
19. Dating your co-workers is very common, but if it comes out that you are dating a manager, one of you will get transferred immediately. One former employee writes, "This is very common. There have been a number of Apple weddings I've been to, and I've met some of my closest friends when working at Apple. I also found my bestie working there."
20. When someone makes daily purchases or pays all in cash, they are likely a reseller. Products are frequently released in the United States before other countries. There is a huge market overseas for Apple products.
Genius Bar Pro Tips and Horror Stories
21. If you have a desktop Mac with AppleCare, you may be eligible for at-home repair. Don't lug your huge computer to an Apple store. Call AppleCare to see if they can arrange at-home/office repair (at no additional cost).
22. The Genius team is a boys club. Although Apple prides itself on diversity, one former employee notes that she never saw a Genius team that was more than 10 percent female, with many stores not having a single woman on the team.
"Being a woman isn't exactly a walk in the park when it comes to the Genius Bar," she writes. "There have been many times that a customer did not believe what I said or did not want me to work on their device. It's a little disheartening when a male employee repeats the same exact thing you said to a customer and the customer agrees. There have been times where a customer did not let me to touch their iPhone when it needed to be fixed but instead flagged down a male employee."
Bodily fluids, computers yellowing with nicotine, bug infestations, cat vomit on computers - you will get it all.
23. Not everyone staffed at the Genius Bar is a "Genius." A Genius is someone who is certified to repair and troubleshoot Apple computers. Apple has created several other positions that specialize in individualized training, group workshops, and iOS hardware/software that are all staffed at the Genius Bar.
24. You will see things you wish you hadn't. These include gross stuff in and on computers and phones. Bodily fluids, computers yellowing with nicotine, bug infestations, cat vomit on computers - you will get it all.
WE DO NOT GO LOOKING THROUGH YOUR STUFF, but sometimes it just happens. Please remember that. Be mindful of your browser history, or what applications open up automatically when you turn the computer on. You know that feature to reopen all windows when you restart? Just remember to close your last porn session browser before you bring the computer into the store. The same goes for mobile devices. Most times, a technician has to open up Safari to run diagnostics; please remember that and close any questionable websites. Even if you're not embarrassed, the technician might be.
25. Please let people know if you are leaving your device in an Apple store for repair and turn off message notifications. Most people have their messages synced across all their Apple devices. The last thing you want is to have one of them in for repair and have ultrapersonal and/or intimate messages start popping up. Again, most technicians do not go through and read any of that stuff, and most of them want to know AS LITTLE about a customer's personal life as possible, but it's hard to ignore a picture message that suddenly appears on the screen.
26. Be kind; most people behind the Genius Bar genuinely want to help you. When they tell you that in order to fix a hardware issue there will be a cost associated with it, understand that the Genius helping you has most likely tried everything they can in order to avoid this.
27. AppleCare is not insurance. AppleCare is an extension of the manufacturer's warranty. What that entails depends on the product. Physical damage is not covered for computers, and some mobile devices (iPhones, iPod Touches, and iPads) have AppleCare+ available. This gives you a specific number of instances to pay a lower deductible for physical damage.
28. Cases and screen protectors are not a 100 percent protective guarantee. It helps with cosmetic appearance, but if your product still gets damaged with a case on, that's normal. And no, if the case or screen protector is damaged, Apple cannot replace it.
29. Back your stuff up before you come in for a repair. A technician never ever wants to tell someone, "Hey, you know all those pictures of your new baby? Yeah . . . those are gone and it could have been completely preventable."
Yes, it is incredibly frustrating to delay a repair because you have to go home and back your stuff up, but keep in mind this technician is trying to help you not lose important information. If you don't care, and you tell that to your technician, they probably document that in the paperwork. Please do not be insulted by this. There have been a ton of instances where a customer was told a million different ways "there is a chance you will lose ALL of your information, are you OK with that?" and they said "yes" only to lose their sh*t when they find out that all of their information was lost.
30. When you drop something off for repair, make sure the customer information is correct. This is how the Apple store gets in contact with you. Also add anyone that might possibly pick up the repair. The Apple store takes customer privacy seriously and asks for ID when picking up the computer. They don't want to hand off the repair to the wrong person. It has happened . . . A LOT.
One More Thing
31. Celebrities need phones, too. Apple 5th Ave. has a secret room to the right of the cash wrap, used by VIPs and celebs to shop in private.

Amazon Is Launching Its Own Meal Kits! Here's What You Can Expect
Is there anything Amazon can't do? Joining the popular meal-delivery-service industry, Amazon is launching its own meal kits, which will be available through its existing grocery service called Amazon Fresh. Much like some of the best food delivery services out there, like Blue Apron, HelloFresh, and Good Eggs, Amazon Meal Kits features individually packaged and portioned ingredients along with a step-by-step recipes meant to be cooked in a short amount of time. If the food is anything like Amazon's new Wickedly Prime snacks, then we know it's going to be good.
There's already an Amazon Meal Kit online for 30-minute steak au poivre with parmesan fries and snap peas, which comes with potatoes, parmesan cheese, garlic, beef stock, parchment paper, and more, but at press time, it was labeled "currently unavailable." To purchase the meal kits, you'll have to be a member of Amazon Fresh, which costs $15 per month and also requires you to be an Amazon Prime member. If you're a lazy cook or someone who really hates grocery shopping (and are already an avid Amazon Prime shopper), this takes care of most of the hassle for you and might be worth a try.
This exciting news comes shortly after Amazon's acquisition of Whole Foods. We imagine it's only a matter of time before the next food-related announcement from Amazon.
I Tracked Every Dollar I Spent For a Month - and Sh*t Got Real
For 30 days straight, I wrote down every single dollar I spent. Yes, I know, you're thinking, "Girl, you're cray." Well, you're right. I didn't just estimate the cost or round up to the nearest cent. I meticulously snapped photos of receipts, used notes on my phone, and took videos of myself shopping.
If I went into a coffee shop and grabbed an overpriced latte, I wrote it down. If I went into Sephora and spent $103.95 on acne scrub and exfoliating masks, I wrote it down.
It was enlightening, it was mood-shifting, and it was just plain hard.
Tracking your spending is like the equivalent of counting calories. Both practices make you question your decision-making skills, both can transform your life in unique ways, but only one can set you up for financial success.
Here are the five things I learned from tracking my spending for one month.
1. Writing it down makes it real.
For me, using a financial app to track where my money is going doesn't quite provide the same type of accountability. When I put the costs into my notes, I started to realize that the money was actually gone. Finito. Vanished into thin air. Looking at the amount you spent at the end of each month doesn't make you feel, well, anything. Looking at the amount you spent in that moment, though? It makes you question whether the purchase was worth it. That $4.95 I spent on a skinny vanilla latte from Starbucks that was burnt? Total bummer. That $36.78 I spent catching up with old friends at Earl's? Total win.
2. I felt guilty. A lot.
These 30 days were more irregular than most months. I spent a ton more money than usual due to a wedding, some travel costs for an upcoming trip, and I also decided to update my Summer wardrobe. And although I knew these expenses were coming, it still didn't make it any easier to admit I was spending money on things I wouldn't normally consider necessities. I dropped $825 on hotels, a rental car, and flights. I spent over $500 on new clothes that would "look super cute in my Instagram photos." I beat myself up a lot for not saving that money and investing in my future, but I also realized that I enjoy treating myself when I can afford to. It got emotional.
3. One month is not long enough to fully understand my money habits.
Each month, I spend $1,290 on fixed costs. This includes rent, insurance, cable, internet, cell phone, and health. Over the 30 days I tracked my expenses, I spent $2,124 on variable costs. To say that I went a little bit overboard on the amount I have 100 percent control over is the understatement of the century. What I started to realize with this area of my budget is that they are variable because they're dictionary-defined as "liable to change." No month will ever be the same. If I want a true average for my spending habits, 30 days is not enough to gain a full scope of my financial situation. I'd recommend giving yourself a minimum of six months tracking spending.
4. I need to pump up my savings.
The best part about tracking your spending is figuring out whether you can dial back what goes out and fine-tune what goes in - to your savings account, that is. The realization for me was that I could spend money on things such as travel, clothing, and the occasional $43 parking ticket without fear of being stretched too thin. That said, all this really means is that if I spend less on dining out and entertainment, I'll be able to save more money for retirement and my investments.
5. It's worth it.
Anyone who reads an article claiming that something drastically changed someone's life only wants to know one thing: "Was it worth it?" To which I can confidently state, yes, 100 percent. For those of you who are struggling to create a budget, I'd say tracking your spending is a great place to start. For those of you looking to cut back but are unsure what your options are, tracking your spending is the eye-opener you need. When it comes to controlling your money and tackling your finances, everything that encourages responsible budgeting is worth it.
So, what are you waiting for? Get a pretty notebook, find a cute pen, and get the reality check your wallet needs.

10 Surprising Ways to Save Money in Europe
If you're planning a trip to Europe on a budget, chances are you'll get a lot of advice on how to save money. Some of these ideas actually work; others, like the urban legend that all flights are cheaper on Tuesdays, are, well, maybe not so accurate. Keep reading for 10 tried-and-true ways to cut on spending while you're traveling in Europe.
1. Travel With a Carry-On.
Overpackers, hear me out! Maybe you get a free carry-on with your long-haul flight. That's great! But if you're going to be flying on cheaper regional airlines while you're on your trip - for example, hopping from Paris to Rome on a Ryanair flight - you're going to get majorly charged for checking luggage. Your plane ticket may only cost you €50, but if you have luggage to check in, you could pay anywhere from €10 to €50 extra for checked bags on a Ryanair flight. Use the money you saved by not checking in luggage to eat at a delicious restaurant instead!
Another Ryanair tip: if you check in at the airport and haven't printed your own boarding pass, you'll get dinged for that as well. If possible, print your boarding pass at home before you leave or find a place to print it; you can generally print at libraries, internet cafes, or at your hotel or hostel.
2. Get a Travel Credit Card
This one is a no-brainer. Get a credit card that you can use for almost everything that doesn't have a foreign transaction fee. That means that the bank will not charge you extra for purchasing something in foreign currency. A bonus perk is accumulating miles for a free plane ticket!
3. Don't Exchange at the Airport
Old-school travelers might recommend that you exchange your currency before you step foot out of the airport in Europe.
The reality is that exchanging your cash for a new currency at the airport is a rip-off. Save yourself the high fees of a currency exchange shop and simply pull money out of an ATM. ATMs are in most airports, train, or bus stations and, of course, at banks. Some hotels and restaurants may also have ATMs, as well as markets and convenience stores. Unless your bank has a special agreement with another bank in the country you're visiting, you will be charged a small fee for pulling money out of a foreign ATM, but that fee will be less than the cost of exchanging at the airport.
4. Hostels Might Not Actually Save You That Much
Don't think that just because you're traveling on a budget you have to stay in a hostel. If you're traveling with one other person or more, it may actually be cheaper for you to share an Airbnb, a private hostel room, or a room at a hotel or bed and breakfast. Price it out beforehand; it is very possible that you could find a room at a B&B for the same cost as two beds in a hostel dorm, or that a private room at a hostel is maybe €5 more than beds in a dorm.
Don't forget to take a look at what the hostel includes in the cost you pay for a bed; not all hostels provide free breakfast, towels, showers, or lockers for your valuables. If there's not a big difference in cost between a hostel and a hotel room, but at the hotel you could get free breakfast, you could save money on food.

5. Buy Tickets in Advance
Some museums, galleries, castles, and cathedrals charge for entry in Europe. Oftentimes, you can save a little money by simply buying your tickets online ahead of time. Another perk is that usually means you can skip the line when you get there!
6. Or Plan a Visit Around Free Days
If you can time it right, you might be able to get into attractions without paying a dime. For example, the Louvre in Paris is free for anyone under 26 with a valid ID of any nationality after 6 p.m. on Fridays, and it's free to all visitors on Bastille Day (July 14) and on the first Sunday of every month between October and March.
The only downside is that free days also tend to be busier, so get there early or late.
7. Download Offline Maps
If you, like me, constantly rely on Google Maps in your everyday life, it can be really intimidating to think about unplugging from data and having to navigate a new, foreign, labyrinthine city such as Dublin with only a paper map and a dismal sense of direction.
Thankfully, you can download offline maps that will still show your destination, as well as your real-time location, without having to burn up all your expensive overseas data or buy less data in the first place. To download offline maps, follow these directions:
- Open the Google Maps app on your phone or iPad (whatever you will use to navigate). Make sure you're connected to the internet and signed in to your Google account.
- Search for a place. For example: Dublin.
- Tap the name of the destination at the bottom of the screen.
- In the top right corner, click on the three dots; then select "Download offline area."
- Select the area you want to download; it can be as big as an entire city, though it may be helpful only to select somewhere like the city center or another location that you will likely spend a lot of time exploring.
- Go through and find major destinations and landmarks that you may want to visit. By selecting these destinations and then saving them as a "starred place," they will be marked on your map so that you can find them even when using offline maps.
- At your destination, use the Maps app as you normally would. And instead of cashing in on tons of foreign data, go get a pint at Temple Bar!
8. Walk
The beauty of Europe is how easy it is to walk everywhere. If you're staying in a central location, you could easily spend a week in a city like London, Paris, or Brussels without paying a single dime for transportation. And there is no better way to get a feel for a new city than to walk its streets, hear the noises, smell the food cooking at a neighborhood market, step into the shops, and make small talk with the barista as you pick up a cup of coffee.

9. Cash in on Travel Cards
If you do need to take transportation to see different neighborhoods or sights in a sprawling city such as London, consider buying a public transport pass. London, for example, offers a Visitor Oyster card, which you can preload with credit and simply scan to get on any public transport in London. Riding the Tube or on a bus is cheaper per ride with an Oyster card than buying a new ticket every time you need to take a ride.
Alternatively, you can look into the London Travelcard, which is a card that allows unlimited travel within all six zones of London for seven days. Again, if you are staying outside the city center or will be doing a lot of sightseeing in far-flung places around the city, this could be a great option. It even includes the train between Heathrow and the center of London, so you don't even have to pay to get into London when you land. You do need to order the card in advance and have it shipped to your home, though, so if you decide on this option, make sure you order it with plenty of time to spare before your trip. And then you can hop off the plane and stroll right onto the train into London!
10. Eat Like the Locals Eat
Think about Rome. Think about all the gorgeous monuments, statues, cathedrals, and art museums you'll visit. Then think about all that delicious Italian food!
It can be tempting to go to a restaurant or cafe right next door to an attraction, especially if you're hangry, but many times you'll find that food in those places is both more expensive and less tasty. They cater to tourists, not to locals, and they'll charge more too.
Walk a few blocks away or ask for tips from locals, and you're sure to find better food and better prices.

30 Halloween Costumes Your Toddler Will Want to Wear All Year Long
Toddlers train for Halloween all year long, between running to the grocery store with Mom in a superhero cape to insisting on showing up to preschool in a Batman costume. Because they're so used to dressing up every other day of the year, their Halloween costumes are best purchased with the idea that whatever they are, they will be worn until they grow out of them (and beyond, probably).

Exclusive: Bite Beauty Debuts Two Toned Lipsticks, Because 1 Shade Is Never Enough
If a makeup edition of the TV show Hoarders existed, I'd definitely be on for my ridiculous, hundreds-deep lipstick stash. I'm hopelessly addicted and no two (or three or four) identical-looking reds will dissuade me from adding even more to the collection. One new launch I'm particularly excited about is Bite Beauty's new limited-edition Amuse Bouche Two Toned Lipsticks ($28), dropping at Sephora today.
You've already heard about how much we love the creamy, super pigmented quality of the Amuse Bouche lipsticks, and this launch is no different. You get that same moisturizing formula (boosted with 12 nutritious oils like avocado and coconut), now with two complementary hues in a single tube.
There are three color combos - neutral, orange-red/pink, and berry/brown - and each features best-selling shades. As for how to wear them, Bite Beauty Brand Founder Susanne Langmuir told POPSUGAR she'd suggest you to "wear shades individually, layer one over another, or use the lighter shade over the darker one to create dimension and contrast on the lips."
There are really endless possibilities - you could even test out that trendy ombré lip you've likely seen all over Instagram. Plus, the two-toned lipsticks are also handy to keep in your purses for when you want to change up your beauty look on the fly.
Ahead, get an exclusive first look at the double-shade beauties. Happy experimenting!
Dietician Says Start Doing This to Lose Weight
You've tried everything, but this time it is going to be different. You're finally getting down to business and losing the weight you've gained, whether it was from too many slices of pizza and beer in college, stubborn pregnancy weight, or that "food baby" you've been growing with pints of ice cream. You've had enough, and although you know there's no easy fix, we asked certified dietitian Leslie Langevin, MS, RD, CD, of Whole Health Nutrition to share the one simple thing you need to do to jump-start your weight loss and start seeing results.
We might as well have asked our mothers, because her advice is the same: to "eat more vegetables." There are so many reasons to eat them - they're low in calories and many are also low in carbs. The high water content and all the chewing it takes to break down vegetables in your mouth can help you feel full faster, so you eat less food overall. Plus the high amount of fiber in veggies will keep you feeling full for longer to prevent snacking later.
Eating more veggies is a growing trend, and the good news is that plants are becoming the new meat, moving veggies from the side of the plate to the center. The easiest way to eat more veggies is to include them in every meal and snack - even breakfast. Not sure how to snack on veggies aside from hitting the salad bar or ordering a side of sweet potato fries? Check out the ideas below to get you on board the all-day veggie train.

The Redhill MRT Station in Bukit Merah, Singapore, is the place of your Instagram dreams. We can only imagine all the fashion blogger-like pictures we'd take while waiting. And by the looks of the pretty photos on Instagram, it seems like Redhill riders have the same idea. See them ahead!
The Meaning Behind La Catrina and Why It's a Symbol of Día de los Muertos
It's not Halloween but rather the first couple of days in November when the celebration of death is at the cultural forefront in many Spanish-speaking countries - and particularly in Mexico. One of the most common symbols you'll see around Día de los Muertos is La Catrina, a statement-making skeletal figure (a bit reminiscent of sugar skulls) adorned in a fine dress and hat.
According to urban legend, La Catrina's roots come from Aztec death goddess Mictecacihuatl. In the legend, the goddess served the same purpose as La Catrina does today: to honor and protect those who have passed and to symbolize the relationship Mexicans have with death.
The current iteration of La Catrina's look was conceptualized by lithographer and printer José Guadalupe Posada, who is said to have designed the first La Catrina skull in the early 1900s. In Posada's depiction, La Catrina had only a head and hat, which symbolized respect for the reality of death. In particular, the hat has been said to represent the artist's perception that death does not discriminate against anyone, regardless of class - historically, only the extremely wealthy wore hats.
Posada's original La Catrina was built upon by artist Diego Rivera (Frida Kahlo's husband) when he created a mural that represented over 400 years of Mexican history called Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in Alameda Park, now located in the Museo Mural Diego Rivera in Mexico City. This mural marks the first depiction of La Catrina as a full body wearing the ornate clothing and accessories she typically wears today.
While Rivera painted La Catrina in the mid-1900s, she continues to be an ever-present symbol of Mexican culture's celebration of Día de los Muertos. The skeleton figure can be found throughout homes and altars with offerings on her behalf. On Nov. 1 and 2, many dress in costume as La Catrina to further underscore her presence during these festivities.
Gordon Ramsay's Transformative Way to Scramble Eggs
Yes, there are a million different scrambled eggs techniques out there, but Gordon Ramsay's will be your full-stop method. While at a press event to promote his new game with Glu Mobile, I asked chef Ramsay to go through the proper way to scramble eggs. His unique method has a heartwarming tale:
"After training in London, I wanted to become French, so I went to the birthplace of all cuisine. I remember seeing this amazing dish with scrambled eggs and sea urchin. I tasted the sea urchin through the scrambled eggs . . . and they topped it with caviar. I thought it was wild. I had never put sea urchin in scrambled eggs. The texture was just incredible. It made it so much creamier. What was more accessible to the average person at home making scrambled eggs - I knew that was crème fraiche. I perfected that craft in France making scrambled eggs to order, standing in Guy Savoy's restaurant behind the line as a 22-year-old."
But crème fraiche isn't the only thing that makes these scrambled eggs different from the rest. It's cooked in a pot! The eggs aren't seasoned from the start! Most of the cooking is done off the flame! Are you baffled yet? Me too, which is why I had to try the method out for myself. So where to begin? Start by watching Gordon's YouTube video. He shared a hilarious story about it:
I think there's about 15 million people online who have [watched] that scrambled eggs video. And it transforms the way you eat eggs. Incredible. It's a kind of rich, sumptuous way to eat scrambled eggs even for dinner, even with all the steps. It's just delicious on sourdough bread. My video, with 15 million downloads on YouTube, I burn the f*cking toast. I'm not so far down my backside. I make mistakes. I just start again. It's funny. I'm so into my scrambled eggs, focusing away. Fire alarm is going off and I burn my toast."
Like Gordon, my first attempt didn't go off hitch-free. I'm unfortunately going to need a few more practices to end up with perfectly custardy, voluminous eggs like Gordon, but what I did make was truly exceptional and unlike any scrambled eggs I've ever had before. I can't wait to keep on practicing, and neither will you once you've memorized the steps.
The 7 Trendiest Fragrances Everyone Will Be Wearing This Fall
It's officially time to haul your booties out from under the bed, drop off your favorite coat at the dry cleaner, wrap yourself up in a cozy scarf, and pick out a new fragrance to wear all season long. That's why we enlisted the help of perfume gurus to detail the top Fall fragrance trends and dish on fresh launches to help you narrow down your (many) choices.
"Traditionally, Fall is a time when we want darker, woodsier, patchouli scents, reminding us of gatherings around the crackling fireplace, sipping brandy or mulled wine, and crisp mornings with glorious colors of foliage," said Sue Phillips, a fragrance trend forecaster.
It's true that scents tend to lean warmer in the colder months, but this isn't a roundup of the same old stuff you see year after year. Both indie and mass perfumers have become increasingly clever and experimental with their scents, and the trends outlined ahead are proof of that.
The Verdict Is In: These Are the Most Popular Halloween Costumes For Kids in 2017
Think it's too early to start planning for the best Halloween ever? Think again. Whether your kid is completely obsessed with Disney's Moana or insists on watching Wonder Woman on repeat, these are the costumes that you'll be seeing up and down the block as you trick-or-treat this Oct. 31.
Workouts That Give Me Everything Running Promised (but Didn't)
There's so much to love about running - in theory, at least. It's a workout that I've always romanticized in my mind: it's just you and the road - no judgment or competition - and let's not forget that runner's high that can solve anything.
Sadly, my running reality is the exact opposite. In all the miles I logged chasing a runner's high, it never arrived. NOT. ONCE. Three half-marathons under my belt and not once was I left feeling like a gazelle or empowered. Instead I felt defeated and questioned what was wrong with me, why was running always so hard. All of my friends loved running, so why didn't I? It took many miles, injuries, and trips to a sports doctor to let go of the idea that running was the benchmark of fitness success.
It took a few years for me to get here - and maybe a breakdown during one pitiful training run - but I'm finally OK telling myself that I am not a runner, and that's OK. Fitness is a personal journey - personal being key. There is no right or wrong way; there's only your way. Once I fully embraced this idea and hung up my running shoes for good, my life changed for the better. Along the way, I was also happy to find that all the things I craved from running were there waiting to be discovered, just not on the track.
The Runner's High: Dance Cardio
If you ever told me that dance would be my thing, I probably would have laughed. I've never been great with choreography, and I let fear hold me back from attending a dance class. On a brave day, I allowed my friends to drag me to Hipline for my first-ever dance-cardio class. I was nervous, inside my head, and made a beeline to the back of the room - but I am so glad I went. That first class and every class since has been one big ball of happiness. Instead of judgement and fear, I found pure, unabashed joy - and one hell of a workout. Here I am, finally experiencing the "runner's high" described to me by so many friends, except at a dance class! I find myself lost in the movement and the music and have a permanent smile on my face the entire time. While Hipline is my absolute favorite, I've found the same feeling of euphoria at other studios like Zumba, AKT, and 305 Fitness.
Intense Cardio: Indoor Cycling
Even if my heel was sometimes left throbbing, I always appreciated the type of workout I got from an intense running session. There is no denying that hill sprints, speed play, and running intervals get the heart rate up in a major way. You know what else does? Indoor cycling. Whether I'm at Spin, SoulCycle, or Flywheel, I know I'm in for an intense workout that will having me climbing hills and maxing out - just like I did when I ran, except this time I'm enjoying the entire process from start to finish.
Buns of Steel: Rowing
Like so many others, I walked by the rowing machine in my gym without giving it a second thought. Then I took a class at CityRow and realized what a fool I'd been. Rowing is the definition of a total-body workout; it works all the muscles of your lower body (plus your core and your arms!) while keeping the heart rate up. Unlike running, it's much easier on the joints, which is exactly what my beat-up body needed.
Becoming Zen With Nature: Backpacking
One of the things I liked most about running was getting outside. Studio workouts definitely have their place, but being outside on a sunny day can't be beat, especially when a run ended up somewhere beautful like a coastal trail. I've always been big into hiking, but in the last couple of years, I've been doing a lot of backpacking. Being out in the middle of nowhere for days on end may sound terrifying, but it's led to some of the most beautiful backdrops I've ever experienced. From a black sand beach in Hawaii only accessible to backpackers to the ever-changing scenery of the John Muir Trail, backcountry hiking has given me a glimpse of nature I would have never been able to experience otherwise.
Stress Relief: Yoga
Sadly, running only added more stress to my life, which is why I am so grateful for yoga. I was slow to come around to it, but now I can't imagine a week without taking a couple of classes. I had to find the style that worked for me, the right teachers, and a studio I loved, but once that happened, it all came into place. My regular 90-minute classes allow me to truly unwind and let go of any stress I may be feeling. It used to be hard to turn off my mind, and now I look forward to that meditative state it provides me with.

No need to scour the internet or pay a visit to any kitschy, pop-up costume outlet, because we've got you covered. Each of these costumes is awesome in its own right, paying homage to the best of current pop culture and childhood nostalgia - not to mention they're all fairly easy and cheap to reproduce! Take a look and let these costume ideas convince you that you're not too old to dress up.
These Baby Frida Kahlo Headbands Are the Cutest Thing We've Ever Seen
When the legendary Mexican artist Frida Kahlo was alive, she loved to wear the most elaborate floral headbands. They were always colorful, and she even included them in her famous portraits. Her style was so eclectic, we don't blame anyone for dressing up like her on Halloween. We've seen plenty of adults go as Frida, but we've never seen a more perfect way of getting your little one in on the fun.
Etsy seller Naneville, whose real name is Estela Motta, sells "hand crafted whimsical felt handbands" from outside El Paso, TX. Among her creations, we found the most perfect Frida Kahlo-inspired flower headband, which paired with a flowy, colorful Summer dress makes for the perfect Halloween costume for your child.
Naneville also sells dolls that emulate Frida's style, so your kid can pose with a look-alike for photos! They are only $23 and are made to order, so get to it before Oct. 31 sneaks up on you.
How to Talk to Your Kids About Privilege
The Lilly Pulitzer shift dresses were paired with four-carat diamonds. The beach cover-ups and sandals of one small group of teenage girls alone would rack up a four-digit tab. The bar served $15 margaritas to adults and $10 smoothies to kids. Our room was serviced no less than three times a day. My daughter, my mom, and I were officially vacationing in the land of privilege, and for the first time, it was making me feel uncomfortable, mostly because I was looking at it through my daughter's eyes, but I wasn't exactly sure what she saw.
I wasn't raised in (and still don't live) a hugely wealthy lifestyle, but I've been known to occasionally frequent a fancy restaurant or to vacation in a pricey resort, and now that I have children, they sometimes come with me. This was the first time, however, that my 4.5-year-old daughter has been old enough to be aware of, and therefore question and comment on, the opulence surrounding her. "Do we have servants here?" she asked on the first day of our long weekend at a lovely beach resort. "Um, no, honey, they're not servants," I replied. "They're people who are paid to help us and the other guests." At the same time, I thought, well, sh*t, can a 4-year-old, Sofia the First devotee really understand the difference?
This vacation isn't the first time I've felt like I need to give my daughter an explanation of the vast privileges she's experienced in her young life. There was the princess tea party birthday she attended that I later Googled to find out started at $500, not including food . . . the packages of dresses that often arrive from her grandma for no other reason than her just being alive and cute . . . that time we bought first-class flights with miles and she decided every airplane should come stocked with warm towels and cookies, delivered directly to her seat (add free wine, and I have to say I agree).
In these moments, I always repeat the same things to her. "You are so lucky to have this party/flight/present." "Not all little girls get to do/have such nice things, so we have to be grateful for them." "Remember to say 'thank you.'" And, I'll admit, she usually does express gratitude, and I'm pretty sure that most of the time, she actually means it.
Yet, when surrounded by 10-year-olds who have no problem ordering $20 hamburgers and signing their parents' names to the bill and teens wearing more expensive clothes than I am, I wonder where the gratitude ends and entitlement begins. And as a parent, I wonder how I can continue to give her nice things without her taking them for granted.
For now, I think the best thing I can do is lead by example. I always try to go above and beyond when expressing my thanks for every gift, meal, and act of kindness I receive, especially when my daughter is there. I talk to her about donating used toys and clothes to children who don't have as much as we do. We write thank-you notes together and often list all the things we appreciate in our lives, big and small. At the end of the day, of course I want her to have everything she wants in the world. But I also want to make sure she wants the right things.
Heading to the NYC Marathon? Here's the Only Travel Guide You Need
Every year around this time, I start plotting my trip out to New York City to cover the marathon. In my first few years going out there, anything outside of my work schedule seemed to involve drinks, late-night shows, and decadent restaurant eats. It's a lot different these days. The only way I can stay healthy and sane during my annual trip is by throwing in a nice dose of workouts and healthy eats. And that's what's great about NYC: for every cocktail bar pushing its latest artisanal concoction, there's a new boutique fitness studio opening down the block. If you're heading there for the marathon or just have a trip in the works, let this be your guide on moderation while there.
Travel Logistics
- Who to fly: When it comes to flying to NYC, JetBlue is hard to beat. Its headquartered in New York, so it's no surprise that there are a lot of flights coming in and out of the area from the airline. JetBlue has flights to and from all major airports (JFK, Newark, and LaGuardia) around NYC, with service between the NYC area and almost 100 US cities and close to 200 flights each day.
Besides the sheer number of flights, passengers will appreciate that JetBlue has the most legroom in coach out of any airline, as well as free snack stations located throughout the plane. Runners: carbo load to your heart's desire! And because running the NYC Marathon is no easy feat, treat yourself on the way home to JetBlue's Mint Class. It's the most affordable first-class option that you'll ever come across and has flat-lie beds, allowing you to lie back and take care of that body that just ran 26.2 miles.
- Where to stay: There are a lot of great hotels in New York, but when it comes to marathon weekend, I am partial to Kimpton's Ink48. It's a short walk to the Marathon Expo at the Javits Center, and the hotel has free bike rentals, which will help keep your feet fresh for the race. During marathon weekend, there's lots of fitness-oriented amenities for guests to partake in: iPod Shuffles preloaded with playlists for your run, gluten-, nut-, and dairy-free snacks for your minibar, and running guides who will take you through sightseeing tours.
Perhaps what I love most about the Ink48 is its location; since it's on the west side of the city and just below the park, getting back from the marathon finish line is much easier compared to staying in other areas of Manhattan.
Where to Work Out
The sheer amount of workout studios in NYC is overwhelming. Because of this, I try to focus on trying new studios that don't have locations outside of NYC. If you don't come from a city with a lot of studios, definitely hit up these classic workouts who have their roots in New York: SoulCycle, Barry's Bootcamp, and Flywheel Sports. If those have been checked off of your list, make sure to give one - or all - of these a try.
- 305 Fitness: My all-time favorite workout in the city is by far 305 Fitness; I never visit without doing one of its infectious dance-cardio classes. A mix of pick-up dance cardio, high-intensity intervals, and strength training, 305 trumps other dance workouts because of its fun, party-like environment. The soundtrack is provided by live DJs and most of the class is done under a blacklight.
- SLT: In recent years, there's been an uptick in Pilates classes that verge on the border of being called Pilates bootcamp classes. To get a true NYC experience, I recommend trying SLT (strengthen, lengthen, tone). The boutique studio is wildly popular, and for good reason: the workouts are tough and truly measurable when it comes to results. Unlike other Pilates classes, you can probably expect to sweat a little, too; it's a good mix of strength training, cardio, and classic Pilates. You'll come out stronger and most likely be feeling your midsection for days.
- IMAXShift: It's kind of crazy how many indoor cycling studios are in New York. Peloton Cycle, SoulCycle, and Flywheel Sports are all good bets, but for something truly unique, give IMAXShift a try. Students ride together in a dark room with a giant IMAX screen taking them through insane visuals that will have them riding through neon-lit tunnels, city landscapes, and even space.
- Y7 Studio: What's not to love about doing yoga at Y7 Studio? At 60 minutes, the class is considerably shorter than most yoga classes, but it definitely makes up for it in intensity. The heated class takes place against ambient candlelight and the moves are paced against a soundtrack. I'm especially fond of its Wednesday and Sunday hip-hop Vinyasa classes.
- CityRow: There is so much to love about rowing; namely, it's a total-body cardio and strength-training workout that is easy on the joints. But the sad truth is that it remains a neglected piece of gym equipment. For a serious butt-kicking workout, head to CityRow for a class that combines rowing intervals with strength training. You'll burn serious calories and find a new love for that oft-neglected machine.
Where to Eat
When it comes to dinner in NYC, I tend to indulge, but these are some great fast-casual spots for healthy lunches during the day.
- Hu Kitchen: If you consider yourself Paleo, dairy-free, or gluten-free, Hu Kitchen is a must. From its Bulletproof coffee to wild salmon cakes and cauliflower rice, it's a dream come true when you follow a restrictive diet. The food is prepared ahead of time, so the ordering experience is much like being at a school cafeteria, except that everything tastes amazing.
- Liquiteria: Traveling can do a number on the immune system and energy levels, which is why I always make a stop at Liquiteria whenever I am in town. One of the first cold-press juice shops to open in the city, the menu has expanded to smoothies, both acai and oatmeal bowls, and baked goods
- by CHLOE: While it's true that not everything on the menu at by CHLOE is 100-percent healthy in the traditional sense, having the option of vegan fast food is a beautiful thing. The entire menu is plant-based with such offerings as baked sweet potato fries, veggie guac burgers, and kale caesar salads. Want to indulge? Go for the mac 'n' cheese or the roasted banana bourbon ice cream.
- Wisefish Poké: Having grown up in Hawaii, I am pretty excited that the rest of the country is discovering what I've known my whole life: poké is a gift from food gods. When done right, it's incredibly fresh, healthy, and stacked with protein. I love the build-your-own bowl process at Wisefish Poké, and that the seafood is responsibly sourced.
End Bloat and Lose Weight by Drinking This Kitchen Staple
Chances are that you have a bottle of olive oil reserved for cooking, but drinking this kitchen staple can provide you with the same healthy benefits of this antioxidant-rich wonder - if not more. From a happier digestive system to banishing belly fat, here's why you should start and end every day with a tablespoon of olive oil.
- It helps fight breast cancer: A recent study published in JAMA Internal Medicine shows that women who followed a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil had a relatively lower risk of breast cancer than those women who followed a Mediterranean diet supplemented with mixed nuts or a diet that was lower in fat. If the Mediterranean diet is new to you, start with this guide of which foods to eat when adopting it into your lifestyle. Besides protecting against breast cancer, the diet has also been shown to slow the aging process and reduce the risk of stroke.
- It reduces the risk of heart disease: While it may seem counterintuitive that drinking olive oil can help protect the heart from disease, multiple studies confirm the claim to be true thanks to the MUFAs, or monounsaturated fats, olive oil contains - so much so that the FDA allows manufacturers to label olive oil with this health claim. The FDA recommends consuming just around two tablespoons per day to protect the heart. Just a note that olive oil should replace saturated fats in your diet rather than add to your current calorie intake.
- It encourages weight loss: The same good fats that protect the heart from disease can also aid you in achieving any weight-loss goals you may have. Not only have MUFAs been shown to help the body feel full, but they also target belly fat. Add olive oil to your list of flat-belly foods you should be eating.
- It helps with digestion: While there isn't a lot in the way of scientific research - just a few smaller studies - olive oil is widely (and successfully) used as a homeopathic remedy to help the digestive system and ease symptoms of constipation. Acting as a lubricant of sorts, drinking olive oil is said to help things move along better in the colon.
No, Trump's Comment Toward France's First Lady Wasn't a Compliment - It Was Totally Inappropriate
If President Donald Trump's comments about MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski didn't provide a clear enough indicator of what the president feels about women, on July 13 he provided yet another ridiculous comment to add to the mix. Trump flew to Paris to visit the city for Bastille Day, and as a tour of the Les Invalides ended, Trump turned to France's first lady, Brigitte Macron, and told her, "You're in such good shape." But that's not all - just in case anyone missed his comments, he also directed the sentiment to French President Emmanuel Macron, repeating, "She's in such good physical shape."
You can watch the entire uncomfortable exchange below.
While Trump commenting on a woman's appearance is completely unacceptable, it's not completely surprising that the president has yet to learn from his previous comments. This is, after all, the same man who made crude remarks about women in a trailer with Billy Bush. The president's utterances also beg the question of whether they were invoked because of Macron's age in relation to her husband. The first lady is 64 years old, making her 25 years older than her husband. The age difference shouldn't bother Trump, as he has almost the same difference between himself and Melania Trump (24 years). But, considering Trump's sexist attitude, he may have made that comment because women at the age of 64 shouldn't look as "good" as Macron does - a sentiment that is both absurd and not his to make.
At this point, however, it's clear that Trump doesn't care about treating women with respect - nor is he someone who can describe people eloquently.
This Is the 1 Thing Bobby Flay Will Never Do at a Restaurant
Professional chefs all have their own ways of doing just about everything, not only in their own kitchens, but any time they're around food. For Bobby Flay, brand ambassador for the Drink Good Do Good campaign, there is one thing he will never do in a restaurant, no matter what. "I won't send food back to the chef. Never," he said when I sat down with him at an event to promote the campaign.
He did say, however, that he will graciously accept a dish that is sent back to him at one of his restaurants. "It happens in all my restaurants for one reason or the other," he said. "I want my customers to be happy, and I will try to the end of the world to make them happy. That's it," he said.
Chef Flay also went on to share what he loves to order at restaurants and what he'll never order at a restaurant. As for what he loves to order so he doesn't have to deal with it at home: anything on crushed ice. "I don't easily have crushed ice at home, so if I can get oysters or anything else served on ice, that's what I go for," he said. But on the flip side, he'll never order cod. "It just doesn't taste like anything, so I don't bother." He pointed out that there is so much other seafood that he would much rather order, and I can't help but agree. Salmon or shrimp for me any day!
Selena Reacts to Her Grammy Win in a Recently Discovered 1994 Interview
Selena and her many appearances on commercials and ads recently became part of an ongoing American Enterprise exhibit at The National Museum of American History in Washington D.C., and while putting it together, the museum found this "lost" interview Selena gave in 1994. It's a clip from the program Tejano USA found on a TV camera donated by Univision to the museum. The footage was taken in April 1994, right before the Tejano singer performed at the Texas Live music festival sponsored by Coca Cola. In it, she spoke candidly about winning her 1993 Grammy for her album Live!.
"I had this huge knot in my stomach and then they announced the winner," she said smiling. "We haven't had time to celebrate because we've been working. It's a good problem to have though." She also talks about not being able to bring in a camera into the Grammys (so cute!) and her guest stint on the telenovela Dos Mujeres, Un Camino.
Harry Potter Fans Will Absolutely Love What This Woman Did With Her Wall
Harry Potter fans have gone to great lengths to show their love for the series, but what this one woman did is something worth copying immediately. Meredith McCardle, Florida-based author and hardcore HP follower, hand-painted the entire first page of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone onto her wall. The result is something out of a dream.
So I hand painted the first page of Harry Potter on my wall because I'm a huge nerd. #hpforever @jk_rowling http://pic.twitter.com/kpYqecZLzq
- Meredith McCardle (@MeredithMcP) April 25, 2016
According to her tweet, the project required an "overhead projector, a can of paint, a steady hand, and a crap load of patience." Even J.K. Rowling herself seemed to love it.
OMG. This is a thing that just happened. THIS IS A THING THAT JUST HAPPENED. http://pic.twitter.com/4yU3kRLJmj
- Meredith McCardle (@MeredithMcP) April 25, 2016
This is definitely one of the best diehard Potterhead ideas ever - and we love it.

How to Moonlight as a Makeup Artist For Your Engagement Photos
The purpose of an engagement photo shoot is to announce to the world that you've found the love of your life (no big deal or anything!). This photo will likely be seen in your local paper, on every social media outlet you (and your mother) utilize, and on your "Save the Date" cards or invitations. It's important to remember all this as you choose your makeup look.
According to wedding photographer Jane Shauck of IRIS Photography, "The engagement makeup should complement the feel of the shoot. For most sessions, this means a pretty natural look. I love makeup that evens out skin tone and draws attention to lips and eyes without being distracting."
I'm a professional makeup artist, so women often hire me for their wedding days. However, many opt to save money by doing their own makeup for prenuptial events and photos. That's totally fine, but I urge them to follow certain steps to create their best look.
Ahead, find six makeup artist-approved tips that will help you create that beautiful, photo-perfect look for your engagement pictures.
This Accused Ax Murderess's Home Is a Surprisingly Beautiful Piece of Horror History
Love classic Victorian homes and have a penchant for horror history? We've found the perfect property for you! The Queen Anne-style Maplecroft Mansion in Fall River, RI, just hit the market, and it's not just the home's meticulous restoration that's garnering attention: it's its onetime owner Lizzie Borden, infamous for being charged with the 1892 ax murder of her father and stepmother.
Shortly after being acquitted of the crime (in one of the most captivating trials of the era), Lizzie and her sister Emma purchased the luxurious 4,000-square-foot estate. The eight-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bathroom piece of horror history was just put on the market for a cool $849,900 by Robert Rutley and Robin Lake of Taylor & Associates. While the spacious home has variance to run as a bed and breakfast, it has been used exclusively as a private residence by its current owner, who took care to update the home back to its original glory, complete with era-appropriate furnishings that are included in the sale.
Intrigued? You should be! Take a tour of the dazzling property ahead, and imagine the Halloween parties you could throw there . . .
The 1 Floral Scent Both Kate Middleton and Princess Diana Wore For Their Weddings
To paraphrase The Devil Wears Prada, florals for a Spring wedding may not exactly be groundbreaking, but, according to Marie Claire UK, the scent has been good enough for the past two royal weddings. As it turns out, both Princess Diana and Kate Middleton both reached for two different (and extremely luxurious) flower fragrances.
When Princes Diana walked down the aisle to marry Prince Charles on July 29, 1981, millions of people watched. So it would make sense that the 20-year-old, who has reportedly only been on 12 dates with her future husband, would get a little nervous. As legend has it, Princess Diana was so shaky that she spilled her perfume, Quelques Fleurs by Houbigant Paris ($190), all over herself - and her now-famous dress.
The scent, which was supposedly her go-to, can still be purchased today - but it sounds almost too extravagant to spray. That's because one ounce of Quelques Fleurs is made up of around 15,000 flowers. The florals in question are rose, orange blossom, and lily of the valley. (Remember that last ingredient!)
When Kate Middleton became a Duchess on April 29, 2011, she chose a softer, more tropical tone. As per usual with any beauty product Kate Middleton uses, Illuminum's White Gardenia Petals sold out pretty much instantly once it was revealed to be the royal wedding fragrance.
Perhaps this choice included a small nod to Kate's late mother-in-law, as it carries a top note of lily. Brides-to-be: guess it's time to stock up on lily?
Tyler Florence's Hack Will Forever Change the Way You Make Mashed Potatoes

Food Network chef Tyler Florence shared his mashed potatoes recipe with us, and I immediately had to try it. Traditionally, potatoes are cooked in water before being mashed together with butter and cream (or milk). However, Tyler suggests cooking the potatoes in the cream itself, so no potato-y flavor is lost. He explains, "Potatoes have a really delicate, beautiful minerality to their flavor profile, and when you cook potatoes in water and you pour that water down the drain, you've extracted all the flavor of the potato. So what I do with mashed potatoes - because you finish them with cream and butter anyway, right? - is I'll take that same cream and butter and add that to the potatoes and cook the potatoes in cream and butter." Would that actually work? Would it actually taste good? I had to find out.

As Tyler instructed, I added "cold, peeled, chopped potatoes, cream, butter, and olive oil" to a pan. He also told us, "I like garlic. I like sage and rosemary flavor combinations, and a little bit of thyme." To my pot of 3 pounds of potatoes, I added enough half and half to just barely cover the potatoes. Frankly, I was scared about using straight cream, which is why I deviated slightly from his instruction. I then added about 3 tablespoons of salted butter and 3 tablespoons of olive oil. I added a few cloves of peeled garlic and half a bunch each of sage, rosemary, and thyme. I also included a significant amount of salt (at least a teaspoon) so the potatoes could absorb some of the flavor while cooking. I covered the pot and allowed it to simmer on medium until the potatoes became fork tender, about 20 minutes. The aroma in my kitchen was unbelievable.

Here's what Tyler told us to do next: "When the potatoes are tender, I put a bowl on the counter and a colander inside that bowl. I pour the potatoes through the colander, and the cream will collect on the bottom. Then I'll put the potatoes back into the pot and take the potato-infused garlic cream and fold that back into the potatoes, and it's the most incredible flavor profile. It's the best mashed potato you'll ever taste in your entire life." And so, I did just that. I drained the potatoes, collecting the rich liquid while discarding the herb stems. I then mashed the potatoes, adding back in the liquid until I created velvety smooth mashed potatoes with little specks of garlic and herbs. I salted and peppered to taste and served up with my lemon-garlic-parsley roast turkey and gravy. These mashed potatoes are pure heaven. I can now agree with Tyler's affirmation; they really are the best mashed potatoes I've ever tasted in my entire life. And even though I was scared it would be a huge flop, I'm never going back to any other method again.
Here's Why Daylight Saving Time Ends in November This Year
You've already said farewell to Summer and stocked up on pumpkin spice everything, but you might be wondering when the real sign of seasonal change will arrive: the end of daylight saving time. Nothing says sweater weather and the Mariah Carey Christmas station like short days and long nights, so when does daylight saving time actually end in 2017?
While we sprang forward on March 12 this year, we won't fall back until Sunday, Nov. 5. If you're old enough to remember a time before 2007, then you might recall daylight saving time ending closer to Halloween. That's because from 1987 through 2006, daylight saving time started on the first Sunday in April and lasted through the last Sunday in October. Then, the US changed the dates to correspond with the Energy Policy Act of 2005, a bill designed to counteract America's energy problems.
If you're looking for someone to blame for the loss of sunlight, direct your ire at the noble Benjamin Franklin. According to David Prerau, author of Seize the Daylight: The Curious and Contentious Story of Daylight Saving Time, Franklin suggested resetting clocks in the Summer to conserve energy. But it wasn't until about a century later when Germany and the rest of Europe adopted the technique during World War I, and the US followed along in 1918.
This Congressman Thinks You Can Buy Birth Control at Grocery Stores
Another day, another GOP congressman is in trouble with his constituents after insinuating that women can get birth control at grocery stores. The comment, made at a town hall, comes from Representative Glenn Grothman who has previously made inflammatory statements.
Grothman, who represents Wisconsin's sixth congressional district, held a town hall in Neenah, WI, on April 30. During the meeting, a constituent calmly explained to him that her daughter receives care at Planned Parenthood because her employer doesn't offer medical benefits. So she asks him, "Help me understand why you want to defund planned parenthood and please do not use abortion as an excuse."
Of course, Grothman begins his answer by stating that Planned Parenthood is the "biggest abortion provider in the country." He then goes on to suggest that women can receive birth control at pharmacies and grocery stores. The crowd lets him have it, yelling at him and shouting "Be honest." You can watch a clip of the exchange ahead.
This isn't the first and most likely won't be the last incendiary comment Grothman makes. He's previously said that he believes the government "bribes" people to stay single and have children to receive welfare benefits; that Pell grants shouldn't go towards low-income or first-year students; and that black people don't care about Kwanzaa. He is up for reelection in two years.

7 Tips to Negotiating the Raise You Deserve
If you're upset about your pay or the promotion you've been wanting for a while that never came, it's time to ask for it! Make sure your manager knows that you're gunning for a raise this year and bring it up at your annual performance review, which should be coming up for many of you. Jim Hopkinson, author of Salary Tutor: Learn the Salary Negotiation Secrets No One Ever Taught You, shared a couple of tips for savvy professionals to use when negotiating for a pay bump. Here they are:
- List your achievements. "From your first day of employment, you should maintain a simple document that lists your accomplishments. Keeping this updated will give you ammunition to use during a performance review – or bullet points for your resume if you decide to move on."
- Be seen. "Get noticed by volunteering for new and high profile projects and becoming more involved in the company as a whole."
- Find the money position. "When negotiating salary in a bad economy put yourself in a position to work on revenue-generating projects with incentives for bonuses."
- Emphasize your work performance. "When asking for a raise, don't complain about your bills being high or what someone else in the company makes. This is about your on-the-job performance. You earn a raise by making the company money, saving the company money, or doing a task that no one else can do."
- Consider the schedule. "You must know the process by which your company gives reviews. Is it once at the end of the fiscal year for everyone? On a rolling basis based on individual hire date? Knowing when operating budgets are created and approved is important so you can make your pitch for more money before funds are allocated."
- Figure out your style. "Also, adapt to your boss' style. If they're the buttoned-up, no-nonsense, bottom-line type, you better make sure to back up any proposal with facts and figures to support your argument. If their style is laid-back and big-picture, present your case in terms of how you fit in with the company as a whole, how you interact with fellow employees on the team, and what your vision is moving forward."
- Make yourself heard. "Make sure to increase communication in the weeks and months leading up to your review. Did you sign a new client? Hit your deadline? Bring a project in under budget? Go head and CC: your boss - and in some cases, their boss - so that they're aware of your recent accomplishments."
