Golden Milk: The Antidepressant, Debloating, Weight-Loss-Boosting Wonder Drink
Ready to simmer down and give your body a boost before bedtime? We've got the perfect, healthy nightcap for you, and you may have heard of it: golden milk.
Used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine, golden milk is a combination of the powerful spice turmeric, coconut milk, and sometimes coconut oil. Black pepper is often added (in small amounts) to increase the bioavailability of (i.e., your body's ability to absorb) the superspice turmeric. Creamy and spicy, soothing and warm - this delicious drink is more than just a tasty treat. Rich in electrolytes and digestive-aiding properties, your body is going to love every sip.
- Benefits of Turmeric: Turmeric's benefits are so good, one 2013 study said it's almost too good to be true. The anti-inflammatory spice has "shown therapeutic potential against a number of human diseases," including cancer and could even help with Alzheimer's. Because of the reduced inflammation, turmeric can also help with gas, bloating, and digestive discomfort, and some studies have mentioned its help with weight loss. Also, some studies and sites have shown that turmeric has antidepressant properties, leading to better moods, less stress, better sleep, and improved brain health.
- Benefits of Coconut Oil: Similarly, coconut oil can help with digestion and gut health, thanks to its antimicrobial properties (which come from good fatty acids, MCFAs). The healthy fats can also raise your good cholesterol, HDL.
- Benefits of Coconut Milk: Did you know that coconut milk can also help with digestion? It "nourishes the digestive lining" with natural electrolytes and healthy fats, which can improve gut health and help with IBS. Like turmeric, it can help reduce inflammation and even aid in weight loss. MCTs, another kind of fatty acid, are found in coconut milk and help with physical performance - allowing you to build muscle and lose fat.
Ready to mix up a batch? We like flavoring with a little honey or agave and sometimes a bit of vanilla bean or vanilla extract, cinnamon, and ginger. You'll be sweetly sipping your way to health in no time!

How to Create It Yourself
Ready to channel Jonerys? Here's what you'll need:
For Jon:
- Long cloak
- Faux fur wrap
- Toy sword
- Man bun
For Daenerys:
- Long black dress
- Blond braided wig
- Dragon pin

For the base of each costume, pick head-to-toe black layers, including simple black ankle boots. But let's be real: We're dealing with some of the best hair on Game of Thrones here, so priority number one is choosing the right wig or hairstyle for these characters. Need some faux scruff to channel Jon? Since he doesn't have a full-on beard, try drawing on some stubble using a brow pencil or brown eyeliner. Brooding expression optional.

This CrossFit HIIT Workout Is Just 12 Minutes, but You'll Be Toast Afterward
Many experts talk about how effective HIIT (high-intensity interval training) workouts are when it comes to weight loss, which is why so many people have found success with CrossFit. A big part of the CrossFit WODs (workouts of the day) include short, intense, fast-paced, heart-pumping interval workouts.
If you've been itching to try CrossFit but aren't sure if you're ready to join a box, try this workout from Jade Jenny, owner and coach of Champlain Valley CrossFit. He refers to it as a "mixed modality interval workout," and even though it's just three moves done for 12 minutes, you'll work your entire body and hardly be able to catch your breath by the end.
The Workout
Each round takes three minutes. Once you complete all three movements, repeat the whole circuit for a total of four rounds. Choose whatever you like best for the first movement, whether it's jump rope, jumping jacks, or rowing. The descriptions of the other two moves are below.
| 40 seconds row, bike, jump rope, or jumping jacks, 20 seconds rest |
| 40 seconds squat with single overhead press, 20 seconds rest |

The Truth About Toby's Fat Suit on This Is Us
On This Is Us, each character has their own relatable struggles. Kevin (Justin Hartley) is trying to make it big in his career, Randall (Sterling K. Brown) struggles to cope with his anxiety, and much of Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby's (Chris Sullivan) story is focused on their battle with losing weight. While Metz has been very open about weight loss and body positivity during interviews, we can't help but notice that Sullivan looks drastically different off screen. Did he shed some major pounds in between filming? Is it all part of his character's upcoming story line? Not exactly.
During an interview with Us Weekly, Sullivan's costar Susan Kelechi Watson, who plays Beth, revealed that he actually wears a fat suit for the role. Naturally, the costume choice has caused mixed emotions, with a lot of people feeling like it doesn't properly represent plus-size actors. While his onscreen love interest Metz totally gets it, she argued that at the end of the day, Sullivan was just the best fit for the role. "People think the authenticity is kind of ruined by [that decision to cast Sullivan], but Chris has been heavier and I think he does understand the plight of being overweight," she said on Watch What Happens Live. "He was the best man for the job. People wear prosthetics all the time. This just happens to be weight, as opposed to a nose or a chin."

What's a Castor Oil Pack and Why Is It Good For You?
Ever since my naturopath introduced me to the wonderful world of castor oil packs, I've been hooked. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Ayurvedic medicine, and naturopathy recommend castor oil packs for the ability to promote healing and reduce inflammation. My naturopath also touts the benefits of these packs because they are said to help improve elimination and circulation, especially of the lymphatic system by stimulating lymph and liver function. I've found them especially helpful during my time of the month to reduce the pain from cramps.
Easy to make, all you need are several layers of flannel and cold-pressed castor oil (a natural oil made from the seeds of the castor oil plant), both of which can be purchased online or from a local health food store. When placed on the affected area, the pack acts as a poultice to draw out impurities and promote healing. Since there are only a few small studies detailing the benefits of castor oil packs, we recommend that you meet with a TCM, Ayurvedic, or naturopath specialist to make sure it's the best solution for you.
How to Make a Castor Oil Pack
Materials:
- Soft, clean, thick material like organic flannel, wool, or cotton
- Castor oil
- Glass bowl
- Hot water bottle or heating pad
- Old clothes that you don't mind getting stained
- Plastic bag
- Large towel
Instructions:
- Put on your older clothes.
- Take your piece of flannel and place it in the bowl. Then pour enough castor oil over it to saturate.
- Get your hot water bottle or heating pad ready.
- Place your towel on a flat surface like a couch, your bed, or the floor. For added protection you can also put down a garbage bag so that your bed or couch won't get stained from any oil that manages to escape the plastic cover.
- Once you lie down, place your saturated flannel over the affected area of your body.
- Cover the pack with plastic.
- Place the heating pad or hot water bottle over the pack and let it sit for at least 45 to 60 minutes. During this time, you can rest or read a book.
- When the time is up, remove the pack and clean the area with water and a bit of baking soda.
- You can keep the pack in a plastic bag in a cool place or the refrigerator. I keep mine in a sealed glass jar in one of my kitchen cabinets. Just add another tablespoon of castor oil for the next session.
And if you're a visual leaner, here's a video describing how to make a castor oil pack.

The 5 Most Ludicrously Asinine Moments of Trump's Puerto Rico Trip
Nearly two weeks after Hurricane Maria slammed Puerto Rico, many of the island's 3.4 million residents are still without power, clean drinking water, or any form of communication. Despite the unthinkable destruction the Category 4 storm inflicted on Puerto Rico, President Donald Trump has spent a great deal of the two weeks criticizing the country and its leadership, and as a result, nobody really believed that Trump's Oct. 3 trip to tour the island would go swimmingly – but at the same time, nobody really thought it would go quite as badly as it did.
Ahead, we've pulled together five of the most objectively bonkers moments of Trump's one-day trip to Puerto Rico. We've included audio and video where possible in order to show the full extent of the absurdity – and be forewarned that all of this really did happen, despite how much that we wish we were just making it all up.
20 Beautiful Bronde Color Ideas to Inspire Your Fall-Weather Makeover
While beauty girls have many reasons to love Fall, one of our favorites is that we get to use the season as an excuse to switch up our style. We pull our best vampy lipsticks out of our stashes, all things pumpkin spice are added to our routines, and we add a bit more brooding color to our hair. If you're not quite brave enough to try out smoky lilac strands, consider testing out the more natural - but equally beautiful - dye trend known as bronde hair.
"Bronde hair color is the perfect marriage of blond and brown hair," said Lauren E. Hack, colorist and cofounder of Lauren+Vanessa salon in New York City. The style is typically achieved using balayage, in which color is "swept" on to the hair strand by strand. This melds the hues together, creating a more natural, sun-kissed effect that looks neither definitively blond nor brunette. While it can also be achieved using traditional foils, Hack prefers to combine both techniques to make the ends of her clients' hair look a bit lighter.
While it's usually women with brown- or black-toned hair who opt to test-drive the bronde trend, blondes love it too - it adds dimension to "tired-looking" color. "It's great for the woman who is low-maintenance," Hack added.
If you're uncertain whether this color trend is ideal for you, keep your complexion in mind. "This hair color is flattering on most women, but especially those with olive skin or light beige skin," said Hack, who pointed to Jennifer Lopez as a shining example of gorgeous bronde hair.
Bronde isn't just a hot trend or an excellent option for transitioning your color during the colder months (though it is both!). After you hit up the salon and get this dye job, a mere glance in the mirror at your new style will make you feel ready to conquer the Fall season. Keep reading for some of our favorite examples of bronde hair from Instagram.
I Tried CBD Oil to Calm My Nerves While Flying, and This Is What Happened
I have such an intense love/hate relationship with flying. I think flying is one of the coolest experiences, but it still absolutely terrifies me for reasons that make no sense whatsoever. While in flight, I go through several routines that help calm my nerves, and if any of it is thrown out of whack, I find myself having a near meltdown. But at the advice of POPSUGAR Fitness editor Dominique Astorino, who used CBD oil for anxiety, I decided to try it on my last batch of flights to see how it would work for me.
My CBD oil of choice was Diamond CBD oil in cotton candy flavor, because I'm nothing if not a child at heart. Over the course of four flights, I experimented with how much I used and when to see if I could find the magic formula. I opted to fully use it as a tincture, as that is the easiest for me to do while traveling. But, rather than drop it into any liquid, I put it straight in my mouth for efficiency.
Flight 1: New York to Denver
Because of poor planning on my part, I got to the airport much later than I wanted to for this flight, which meant I didn't take my CBD oil until I'd already boarded the plane. I opted to do two nearly full pumps of the dropper because I tend to be fairly resistant to CBD and THC and I wanted to really relax. About an hour into the flight, I started to feel slightly tired but not drowsy and pretty relaxed. Overall, the flight was pretty calm, but once we were coming into Denver, which is never fun, I was hyperaware of everything, and the CBD had no effect at that point.
Flight 2: Denver to San Francisco
I had a very short layover in Denver and wasn't sure if I should try topping off my earlier dose of CBD, but I went for it, because, again, Denver airport problems. I only used one dropper full this time, and it was about five hours after my previous dose and about 30 minutes before my flight. Our takeoff was terrible, so I would have loved to be relaxed, but this time I felt no effects of the CBD oil other than my palms feeling extra sweaty. The relaxation reached me later in the flight, but at that point, I didn't feel like I needed it as much.
Flight 3: Los Angeles to Denver
Poor planning on my part resulted in me flying through Denver again to come back home, despite how much anxiety the flight route gives me. But I was better prepared on the CBD front this time, which was a very good thing when I realized that a lot of my usual comforts during a flight were going to be taken from me. I checked into my Southwest flight far later than I usually do and was stuck with a bad boarding spot, which meant no window. Then the passenger who had the window seat of my row closed the shade, and I actually wanted to panic. Luckily, I had taken three droppers full of CBD oil about 45 minutes prior to this and had already started to feel drowsy. Despite being very uncomfortable during the entire flight, the CBD absolutely helped to calm me down.
Flight 4: Denver to New York
I finally got it right for the fourth flight. After another layover in Denver, where I topped up on the CBD with another two droppers, I was actually able to nod off during the flight. It's extremely rare for me to feel calm and comfortable enough during a flight to actually fall asleep, so this was a bit of a miracle.
Overall, I would recommend this particular CBD oil for anyone who is a nervous traveler. The percentage of CBD in the oil is low enough to make it legal to purchase, carry, and use, but it's still concentrated enough to give you the calming effects. The small bottles are actually perfect for travel, because they meet TSA requirements for the amount of liquid you're allowed to bring on a plane. However, all that being said, make sure to read the instructions that come with any CBD or hemp products you purchase and adjust accordingly to see what will work for you.
2018 Movie Trailers You Have to See
2018 is already bringing with it a buzzy slate of films. Now that Fall is upon us, the new year's movie trailers are beginning to roll in. From Fifty Shades Freed to A Wrinkle in Time and Black Panther, there appears to be a movie for everyone (James Corden is even voicing a modernized Peter Rabbit to delight your kiddos). Sadly, some studios are set on making fans wait for a glimpse of the blockbusters awaiting them in their future - we're looking at you, Marvel - but others are already offering up the goods. And trust us, some of these movies look really good.
Watching the trailers, you'll notice a few themes are already beginning to emerge. The best one is that women are about to rule the box office. Natalie Portman, Alicia Vikander, and Taraji P. Henson are just a few of the actors headlining movies about ladies kicking butt next year. If the first batch of 2018 movie trailers is any indication of what's to come, you should plan on spending a whole lot of time at your local theater in the coming months.

Rebecca Dropped 50 Pounds and 5 Clothing Sizes in 7 Months With MyFitnessPal
Leading up to her 40th birthday, Rebecca saw some photos of herself that were a wake-up call - she had put on more weight than she realized and immediately knew a change had to be made.
Rebecca: Before
It's not easy to lose 50 pounds in your late 30s, but Rebecca wasn't afraid of hard work and commitment to her health. One of her major tools for success? The ultrapopular MyFitnessPal app. She credits it in part for her incredibly quick weight-loss success . . . in addition to her hard work, strength training, and clean eating, of course. Here's a little more about Rebecca's journey.
POPSUGAR: What made you decide to start your weight-loss journey?
Rebecca Walden: On Jan. 7, 2017, I saw a picture from my son's birthday party (held earlier that day) that took my breath away. I was the largest I'd ever been, literally bulging at the seams of even the most generously cut articles of clothing. I was also pushing 40 and scared that if I didn't take action, I'd soon find myself in chronic-condition territory.
I love to eat! And desserts are my kryptonite. It all came down to a lack of discipline and an expectation that I should see results right away. That's just not how our bodies work.
PS: How did you get started?
RW: Instead of a specific program, I got back to basics (calories eaten vs. calories exerted). I knew that portion control was my biggest issue, so that's where I started. Ultimately, I knew this was up to me - there is no product substitute for proper nutrition and exercise.
"There is no product substitute for proper nutrition and exercise."
When I first started, I didn't see meaningful weight loss until I'd gone three straight weeks of eating right-size portions of healthier food and exercising three times a week.
PS: What's your favorite way to work out?
RW: Strength training! The very idea was once intimidating, but when you see how it transforms your body, you just want to keep after it.
PS: What's your weekly exercise schedule?
RW: I've worked my way up from three times a week to five or six times a week, schedule permitting. When I know a busy week is ahead, I put in extra effort on the weekends, favoring two-a-days (usually kickboxing followed by barre). On a typical week, I rotate these two with a mix of strength training, Spin, Zumba, and a step/strength hybrid class. If I can't make it to the gym, I swim laps or jog through the neighborhood.
Rebecca: After
PS: How do you keep workouts exciting?
RW: Group fitness just has this contagious energy that solo cardio can't touch. After a particularly challenging set, there's always someone to give you a high five, make you laugh, and keep you focused. And once you start seeing your body change, all that camaraderie is just bonus. You want to be there, and it's already exciting because you are slaying your goals.
PS: How much weight have you lost?
RW: Fifty-three pounds in seven months.
PS: What was the first big difference, other than the number on the scale, that really made you feel proud and excited?
RW: I was able to zip into a dress that hadn't fit me in three years. And this time it looked better on me than when I first bought it!
PS: How do you track your weight loss?
RW: I use MyFitnessPal, without fail, every single day.
PS: What's a typical day of meals and snacks?
RW: Breakfast is high protein, usually a 1/8 slice of homemade crustless spinach quiche, sliced berries, coffee, and two tablespoons of half-and-half.
Lunch is also homemade/brown bag, often egg salad, jalapeño-pimento cheese, or chicken salad with red grapes. In Summer months, I love to make gazpacho, which travels well, too.
PS: Do you count calories? What's the range of calories you eat per day?
RW: Yes! It keeps me mindful. Once I understood the basic math of a pound (3,500 calories = 1 pound) and I had a firm grasp of how many calories I needed each day at my current weight to lose one pound per week, it became a matter of budgeting my calories each day.
"I'm four months away from my 40th birthday, and I've never felt better."
After a while, I decided that some foods (or drinks) weren't calorically worth it to me, and the progress really started to show.
Example: If I know I'm meeting girlfriends for drinks one night, I factor in those projected calories well before (how many glasses of wine do I want to enjoy, etc.). It might be a half-serving of Greek yogurt and chia seed for breakfast that day, and salmon salad for lunch, etc., to give me caloric room to enjoy my time with the girls.
When I started, I was eating just under 1,500 calories a day. As I've lost weight and kept my goals up to date in MyFitnessPal, that number has shifted down incrementally. I now aim for 1,210 calories daily, before exercise. And while I haven't always eaten back my exercise calories, if I'm hungry, I do it and don't fret over it.
Rebecca: Before and After
PS: What are the healthy staples that are always in your fridge?
RW: Fage two-percent Greek yogurt is the bomb. I dare you to sub it for sour cream in any recipe and tell me it isn't every bit as delicious. Breakstone's single-serve two-percent milk fat cottage cheese for refueling after strength training. All that protein for only 90 calories! Celery and organic apples are a staple too. Both are awesome with one tablespoon of peanut butter (provided it's a peanut butter not loaded with cane sugar and other garbage). Other staples include chicken, eggs, strawberries, blueberries, and frozen cauliflower (anything you can do with potatoes, you can do with cauliflower).
PS: How do you strategize for meals out?
RW: I study up on the menu prior. Even places where lean dishes are scarce (Olive Garden is our daughter's favorite), you can always make it work. Last time there I ate the salad without croutons, cheese, or dressing, plus a half portion of the Tilapia Piccata.
PS: What advice do you have for anyone starting out on a weight-loss journey?
RW: MyFitnessPal plays a vital role every day. It keeps me mindful of my food and activity choices and helps me remember my self-control should I feel it diminishing. Not once on this journey have I felt deprived. If anything, I feel knowledgeable, strong, and motivated to keep going!
The most helpful part of this journey has been to experiment with recipes so that I still feel satiated and like I've gotten my "comfort food" fix without overdoing it.
Read as much as you can and come up with a regimen you know you can honor. My mindset was to take everything I read as a guideline instead of hard-line truth. We all have different bodies and circumstances going on, and I'm on the path that makes the most sense for me. I'm four months away from my 40th birthday, and I've never felt better.
The Secret to Losing Fat and Toning Your Backside
If you're trying to tighten up your butt and upper quads, you're not alone. This area is a problematic spot for women, and there's no single cure to change things overnight. According to celebrity trainer Anna Kaiser, increasing the intensity of your cardio and strength-training program is a great start. Anna's other piece of advice? "Put down the fork. No one needs to be eating five bowls of pasta a week and think that they're going to get rid of [fat] if they're doing 500 leg raises. It's just not going to happen."
So stick to a healthy eating plan, add plenty of cardio to your workout routine, and try out these helpful exercises to help you feel more confident the next time you slip into something slinky.
30 Tiny, Chic Wrist Tattoos That Are Better Than a Bracelet
If you truly want to wear your heart on your sleeve, then the wrist should be the canvas for your next tattoo. A flat plane fairly easy to tattoo, the wrist is popular for first-timers and small designs or sayings. While the wrist is generally a more visible tattoo spot than, say, the ribs or back, this placement allows for easy coverage with foundations or bracelets - making it an ideal choice for those who might be slightly tentative to get inked in a more prominent location. Conversely, we're also partial to the wrist because of its visibility: the conspicuousness of this spot is perfect for tattoos meant to serve as a source of inspiration, support, or reminder.
But don't just take our word for it - check out these gorgeous pieces of wrist ink to get some serious tattoo inspiration.

12 Harry Potter-Inspired Recipes You Can Bring to Life
Harry Potter fans can never get enough of the Wizarding World. Though it may be difficult (er, or impossible) for us measly muggles to re-create spells, one thing we can bring to life is the food and drink mentioned in the books. Though it may not be as easy as shouting "accio butterbeer!", these recipes are absolutely doable for the home cook.
5 Condiments You Should Refrigerate - and 3 You Shouldn't
Fact: not all condiments belong in the fridge. To make sure you're getting the longest shelf life (and the most flavor) out of common condiments like ketchup, maple syrup, and hot sauce, be sure to refer to this list of products you should - and shouldn't - store in a cold fridge. Some of them might surprise you and remind you to check yours to see if they're in the right place!
Do Refrigerate
- Maple syrup. Maple syrup belongs in the refrigerator because mold can grow inside the bottle if it's left out.
- Mayonnaise. This one is a no-brainer! Mayo is made with eggs and needs to be kept in the refrigerator once opened.
- Nut-based oils. Oils like sesame or peanut that aren't refined and are made with nuts should be refrigerated to keep from going rancid. Pro tip: nuts should also be refrigerated to maintain their best flavor.
- Ketchup. Refrigerating ketchup is up for debate depending on what kind you have and how quickly you plan to use it. Open ketchup can be stored in the pantry for up to one month, but if you won't use it by then, keep it in the fridge.
- Mustard . . . sometimes. Dijon and horseradish-based mustards should be refrigerated, but others are OK to leave out if you prefer them at room temperature. Refrigerating yellow mustard will help maintain its flavor, but it doesn't contain any ingredients that spoil.
Don't Refrigerate
- Soy sauce. Ever notice that soy sauce stays out on the tables at restaurants? That's because it's fermented and doesn't need to be refrigerated.
- Hot sauce. Vinegar-based hot sauces have a shelf life of about three years and don't need to be chilled to stay fresh.
- Honey. Honey will crystallize and become impossible to use if it's hardened in the fridge. Keep it stored away from direct sunlight.

This Facebook Account Is Dedicated to Every Single Instagram Boyfriend Out There
Not all Instagram photos are equal - some are taken with self-timers or using the ol' arm for a selfie. But others are taken by a special kind of photographer: the Instagram boyfriend. A Facebook page dedicated to the Instagram boyfriend is going viral because really, who can't relate?
The page, called Boyfriends of Instagram, boasts more than 14,000 "likes" and 81 user-submitted photos of boyfriends taking pictures of their significant other. The boyfriends go to great extents to take the right photo: some hover above a pool, while others will lie on a questionable sidewalk. Not all of these are boyfriends, either; some are kids of mothers who are taking the photos that will hopefully gain more than 76 "likes."
You can "like" the Facebook page or follow it on Instagram. Shout-out to all the boyfriends who don't complain and take your next profile picture. And let's be real: your next stop is becoming an Instagram husband.
1 Mom's Maleficent Photo Shoot Proves "Even Villains Will Do Anything For Their Little Ones"
Yaky Di Roma, a photographer from Florida, put a playful twist on breastfeeding when she dressed up as Maleficent in a photo shoot with her 3-year-old son, Hans.
The photographer decided to get creative after getting some heat from her followers on Instagram. "I got many comments from my followers telling me I look like a villain, so I decided to go with it and create a self-portrait using smoke bombs," Di Roma told POPSUGAR.
So when it came time to pick a character to impersonate, she went with Sleeping Beauty's nemesis. "I wanted to dress up as Maleficent so badly because I wanted to show that even the most evil creatures would do anything for their little ones," she said.
The photographer, who primarily shoots breastfeeding portraits, also wanted to "show breastfeeding as a normal thing" after some of her work got deleted from Instagram for being too racy.

A Former Employee Reveals 11 Surprising Secrets About Goodwill
Goodwill is a place to donate your own items and to find bargains on used goods from others. The American nonprofit has a network of thrift stores across the country, but what is it like to actually work there? A former Goodwill employee did an AMA on Reddit and detailed some interesting aspects of the job, including how much money people have accidentally left in used clothing, as well as some of the more questionable things people have attempted to donate.
1. Have you ever found money or valuables like jewelry that was mistakenly left in a donation, like in the pockets or in a drawer?
"This one guy had left close to $1,000 in a suit jacket pocket. Apparently that was his money stash that he hid from his wife and she donated some of his jackets. Another employee found like $240 stashed in a book. It was very common to find smaller bills and change in purses. If no one came for the money within X amount of time, it was rung up as a donation."
2. I'm assuming the husband came looking for his money? Also, how would anyone know if the money was there at all? What if someone took it and never said a word about it to anyone?
"Yeah, he got it back. Haha. There are people called sorters, who sort through entire duros of clothes. They are pretty much trained to check pockets. If they took the money? To each their own I guess, but if they someone somehow found out, they would definitely no longer have a job."
3. What's the most questionable, weird, or creepy donation you've ever received?
"There was a time where we received well over 120 donations in one day, it had been a very long day. It seemed impossible that we could ever catch a break. I was very tired, then right on cue, another car pulled to the door. They roll down the window and a little girl hands me a blank ass CD without a case."
4. Did you ever recover stolen property? Like someone donated something they stole and then the owner discovered it?
"I don't think so. There were often times people would come in and ask to speak to a manager, because something had been donated that wasn't supposed to be. Those were almost impossible to find, because our process was either like clockwork or there was so many donations that you would never find anything.
There was one instance where a guy had purchased an entertainment center that he intended to come back with a trailer to pick up, and we sold it to someone else; however, that was not by mistake. We had a 24-hour pick-up policy, and it had been a few days, so that sh*t got resold. So, when he came back with a trailer several days later, he was not impressed."
5. Have you seen stuff that you knew actually had super value?
"Oh, yeah, especially in the electronics department. I don't know why or what the circumstances were, but a lot of people donated brand-new stuff. We had an ecommerce store a lot of valuable stuff went to. For example, we sold a lot of gaming consoles on there."
6. What's the most expensive thing you ever saw donated?
"It's hard for me to remember, but it was probably furniture related. We made a killing off selling furniture sets. Like loveseats, couches, chairs, etc. One time we sold swords and knives that were all in a set. I'm not going to act like I knew what exact type of swords and knives they were, but I know it was definitely against our company rules to sell them. Whoever bought them knew what they were, because they paid a pretty ridiculous amount."
7. What about electronics, MacBooks, video games?
"Laptops and other computer stuff was recycled, unless it was really nice and immediately sellable. We did get a bunch of consoles and games. I saw a pretty sweet Nintendo 64 collection with insane amount of games. That all went to our ecommerce site. Apparently Mario Kart is a hot commodity, people were paying over 20 bucks for that sh*t. I don't doubt it, I just never really thought about it, because I have always had it with my 64. We got a bunch [of] modern and next gen-stuff from time to time. I use to cringe pretty hard, because I would have to put out PS4 controllers for a pitifully cheap price for them to sell, when I would've bought them in a heartbeat. It's worth noting we couldn't shop in our own store."
8. What's the grossest thing you've seen at the Goodwill store?
"This is tough, I've seen a lot. From the toilet overflowing to mildew-ridden clothing/furniture. One thing I used to hate was when I priced electrical items they were all previously sorted through and placed in totes for me to test/price. Coffee makers used to be frustrating, because donation attendants just threw sh*t in totes, and a lot of the coffee makers still had coffee in the filters. The totes would be drenched with water and sometimes coffee would be everywhere."
9. How involved were you with the donation bins that are all around? I always wondered what kind of vermin find their way in those and if employees have to deal with that.
"I know Goodwill industries has the drop boxes located all around. We were actually Goodwill EasterSeals, which merged together. There was like only 18-20 of those stores around. We had donation centers that would send stuff to us to process and sell. One time there was a rat in the bottom of a clothes duro. It made the entire back room smell, and we had to get rid of all the clothes."
10. When does an item become Goodwill's? Is there a gray area? Like what if someone accidentally donated something they didn't want to or wasn't theirs. Is there a time limit or is there a line that once the property crosses there are no backsies?
"There was supposed to be, but often times it depended on the manager. I've saw a total of about 5 store managers come and go (excluding assistants). My first manager was strict as hell about it. She made one lady buy back her own stuff."
11. I've heard Goodwill sells/destroys a lot of their donations. Would my clothes be put to better use if given to another local charity organization?
"Well, I can't speak for every location, I can tell you at our store they didn't let us throw anything away unless it was absolutely disgusting. However, your stuff will be sold, though. The idea is supposed to be: the money that we make off of the items that are donated then goes to the various disability services and other charities. How much of that actually goes to those charities? I don't know. Obviously not all of it, because I was getting a pay check. The only person who will benefit from your stuff immediately is some old bargain hunter named Bill who is going to be wearing your Hanes t-shirts."
8 Haunted Houses and Hotels in Latin America
Depending on who you ask, exploring a haunted house is either the best or worst way to spend Halloween. The elements of reality that are intertwined with the myth and folklore around these homes and hotels make for an eerie experience. This list includes everything from hauntings that were incited by actual, real-life events to some pegged solely on myths that have continued over time. Either way, the spots are totally spooky.
Wanna Be the Coolest Halloween House on the Block? Stop Carving Pumpkins and Do This Instead!
I will fully admit that I am not a fan of Halloween, in general. I've been known to put my Christmas tree up before Thanksgiving and to decorate my house for Easter (who can deny the cuteness of bunnies?!), but Halloween has never really been my thing.
However, I do very much like two things: my two kids and any excuse for a party. The former do not seem to share my disdain for the strange combo of scary and sugarcoated that is Halloween, and their love of the holiday has forced me to also get minimally on board since they became old enough to realize that all those pumpkins on people's porches actually meant something. I, of course, put them in cute costumes, which they wear while walking around our neighborhood asking for candy, which I then attempt to covertly hide so they don't go into sugar comas. Fun, right?
Until last year, I was basically participating in Halloween while still not really enjoying it. And then we moved into a new house, in a neighborhood full of young families who quickly informed me that my home's previous owners were all about Halloween, passing out popcorn, beer, hot chocolate, full-size candy bars, and more than 200 hot dogs every year. Costumes, scary movies, and spiders I might not do, but throwing a party? That I could get on board with.
Costumes, scary movies, and spiders I might not do, but throwing a party? That I could get on board with.
Of course, as the mother of two small children, I've learned to accept my limitations and ask for help. I enlisted a new neighbor friend to do the hot dogs and another to do the popcorn, but the booze and the sweet stuff I was all over. I called in a few friends to let me borrow their Crock-Pots and started stirring up drinks.
For the kids, I whipped up two batches of No Biggie's creamy Crock-Pot hot chocolate. It was gone within the first hour of trick-or-treating, and while I was sad to disappoint many a child who'd heard a rich molten chocolate drink was being served on my front lawn, only to find my stash depleted, my ego was boosted by how big of a hit it was while it lasted. This year, I'm making four batches.
For the parents, I set up a cooler of beer, which no one touched until my trick-or-treating afterparty (more on that later). What did get a big response? My hot apple cider, spiked with salted caramel vodka (find a similar recipe here - I skipped the brown sugar). I filled up disposable, lidded coffee cups with the stuff, and not a single parent turned me down when I asked if they wanted one. Many came back for more.
Since Halloween was unseasonably warm last year, I set up a folding table on my front lawn and served everything there, next to my bowl of snack-size candy bars. I am a firm believer that three small candy bars is way more fun than one full-size one . . . plus, did I mention I was giving out hot chocolate and booze?!
Once it got dark, my neighbors brought over their leftover popcorn and hot dogs and we had a little afterparty, dipping into that stash of beer and giving the kids flashlights to play tag and tell ghost stories with. It was a great party and a perfect night, even if it is my least favorite holiday. I might not be a Halloween person, but being the Halloween party house? That I kind of love.
If You Overuse These Beauty Products, It Could Actually Be Hazardous to Your Health
When it comes to our favorite products, it can be easy to OD (hello, dry shampoo!), but can there ever be such a thing as too much when it comes to your favorite beauty formulas? According to experts, the answer is a big scary "yes!"
The pros we spoke to caution that some of our most beloved cosmetic, hair, and skin saviors actually have the potential to do more harm than good, with results ranging from hair loss to serious skin conditions.
Before you reach for your favorite lip balm or primer (there's also a reason we mentioned dry shampoo!), read on to see whether you're using anything on their "less is more" lists and to figure out exactly how much and how often you should be tapping them in order to reap the benefits without the havoc.
11 Halloween Makeup Looks That Will Make You Scream, "Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!"
When it comes to Halloween films, it doesn't get much more classic than Tim Burton's Beetlejuice. The whole movie - which stars Hollywood favorites Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Alec Baldwin, and Geena Davis - is riddled with eerie-meets-hilarious characters that are perfect for inspired Halloween costumes.
There's Beetlejuice himself, a sleazy ghost in an awful (but now iconic) black and white suit and wiry green hair; Lydia Deetz, a gothic, witch-child who dabbles in photography; the not-aware-they're-dead couple who undergo numerous costume changes that would be a hit at your own Halloween party; and the medley of misfit patients in the infamous doctor's office scene. Which one will you be for Halloween? Get some inspiration with these looks!
How to Keep Lemons Fresh For up to 3 Months
This tip for storing lemons is so easy. Accoring to Food.com, if you refrigerate lemons in a bowl of water, they will keep for up to three months! It sounds insane, but I'd be willing to give it a try. And if you want to extend the life of a lemon even futher, freeze the zest and the juice separately.
10 Halloween Costumes That Have Us Really Confused
People get pretty creative to come up with the best Halloween costume, but sometimes creativity can take a wrong turn and actually become a little offensive. There are plenty of slightly weird and not-quite-right Halloween costumes out there (sexy baby, really?), and though we're all up for not taking yourself too seriously, there's a fine line between what's witty and what can be considered inappropriate.
Case in point: to some, costumes that poke fun at typical items in Latinx culture - like a piñata or a Day of the Dead skeleton - can be fine, but to some others, it might be disrespectful. Here are a few costumes you might want to think twice about wearing - and while you're at it, here are a few you should definitely wear.

What Happens When You Go Off the Pill
Going off birth control can be confusing! To help answer many of the inevitable questions on the matter, we turned to a board-certified doctor, and here is her advice on the topic.
There have been lots and lots questions and concerns about what happens when you stop birth control pills, from acne to abdominal cramps, from weight gain to the lack of a period following discontinuation. Since the topic is popular and confusing, I thought I would round up my answers to the myriad questions so the various bits of information are all in one place.
First of all, a quick review. The birth control pill works by preventing ovulation. Once you stop taking the pill, the hormones will be excreted from your body quickly, usually within a couple of days, which is why women who miss a couple days of pills on birth control have a chance of ovulating and getting pregnant. It does not matter how long you were on the pill, your body will still be rid of the hormones within a couple of days. Once the hormones are out of your system, the body will begin to start producing hormones to initiate menstrual cycles. Some women will begin to ovulate in a couple of weeks, whereas it may take several months for other women to begin to ovulate. Generally speaking, your body should be back to "normal menstruation mode" within two to three months after stopping the pill.
It is important to emphasize that if you had problems with ovulation prior to starting the pill, you may continue to have irregular ovulation/periods after stopping the pill. Most women with normal ovulation/periods prior to starting the pill will continue to have normal ovulation/periods after stopping the pill. But, some women who had regular periods prior to starting the pill may have irregular ovulation after stopping the pill. The key point here is that everyone's experience with ovulation/periods after stopping the pill is different!
One of the specific questions we received was whether or not it is normal to have one's period come late after stopping the pill. There is a condition called post-pill amenorrhea (or lack of menstruation) that can occur after stopping the birth control pill. According to the Mayo Clinic, the reason for lack of menstruation in these women is that the body is just taking longer to produce the hormones necessary for ovulation and menstruation. If you still haven't had a period after three months, they recommend taking a pregnancy test, as some women ovulate right after stopping the pill without knowing it and are pregnant without ever getting a period. It would be prudent to also schedule an appointment with either your primary care physician or gynecologist for evaluation.
Another specific question that was sent to us was from a reader concerned with developing acne after stopping birth control pills (she mentioned desiring pregnancy), as she had noticed significant improvement in her skin with use of birth control pills. Many women take certain birth control pills to regulate their acne. Once you stop using birth control, you may notice an increase in acne on your face or on other parts of your body. When your body's hormone levels regulate again, the acne can subside in some cases. It is hard to predict if one's acne will return after discontinuation of the pill and unfortunately, there is not much that can be done about preventing the return of acne should it happen. My only advice is to use good face-washing hygiene and consider seeing a dermatologist if your acne returns and is bothersome. Women who are not on birth control may not be able to take certain acne medications as they can be harmful to a baby should she get pregnant.
Another reader question was regarding some lower abdominal pain (in the area where she normally got menstrual cramps) about 2 weeks after discontinuing birth control pills. Lower abdominal pain/pelvic pain can represent many, many things. Without knowing any further information that would be helpful, my first impression is that she could be experiencing mittelschmerz. According to Mayo Clinic, mittelschmerz is pain with ovulation that can feel like: a dull ache or cramp, sharp sudden pain, and is typically one sided. Approximately one in five women experiences ovulation discomfort. The exact cause of mittelschmerz is unknown but is thought to either be due to stretching of the surface of the ovary when the egg is released or blood/fluid released by the ruptured egg, which can irritate the lining of your abdomen. My advice to the reader who asked this question is to contact your primary care physician or gynecologist, as more information (including a history and physical exam) is needed to make sure that nothing else could be causing this abdominal/pelvic pain.
Some women worry about weight gain or increased pre-menstrual symptoms after stopping the pill. It has been shown that birth control pills that are higher in estrogen may cause weight gain and water retention. Therefore, your body may adjust after stopping the pill and some weight loss may occur due to a decrease in water retention. However, some women do report weight gain after stopping the pill. It is hard to determine whether a woman will gain, lose, or maintain weight after stopping the pill. The most important steps to take to stay healthy are to continue a healthy, balanced diet, and stay active with exercise and fitness. Many birth control pills are designed especially to help treat exaggerated pre-menstrual syndromes or in certain women, pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder. Thus, some women will notice increased breast tenderness and other pre-menstrual symptoms such as nausea, headaches and fluctuating emotions.

Why You Need to Be Eating Fat If You Want to Lose Weight
The secret to dropping pounds, reducing your risk of heart disease, and feeling better overall may just be filling your plate with fats. While eating more fat doesn't mean drowning your veggies in butter, it does mean focusing on two types of "good" fats: MUFAs, or monounsaturated fats, and PUFAs (polyunsaturated fats), which include omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.
Why are good fats so, well, good for you? For one, unsaturated fats contain disease-fighting antioxidants like vitamin E, and have been shown to help lower bad cholesterol levels to reduce your risk of heart disease. Plus, omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids are important for keeping many of our body functions, like our immune system and heart, in top shape. If you're trying to drop pounds here's another important reasons to embrace good fats: MUFAS have been shown to help burn away belly fat.
While MUFAs and PUFAs reign supreme, a little bit of saturated fat in your diet may not be as bad as previously thought. Recent studies have suggested that saturated fats in foods like milk, cheese, and meat may not be as harmful as previously thought, after a analysis found no correlation between a high saturated fat diet and an increased risk of heart disease. Coconut oil, a plant-based saturated fat, has actually been shown to raise levels of the "good" cholesterol, HDL, in recent studies. Current guidelines still suggest limiting your saturated and trans fats intake, however, so it's up to you to make educated decisions about how much you should eat.
That said, eating more fat isn't a bad thing, as long as it's done in moderation. Remember that fats, whether good or bad, are still high in calories, so be sure to keep this in mind when you plan your diet; current dietary guidelines suggest that for a 2000-calorie diet the daily intake of fat, including healthy fats, should be no more than 65 grams. Registered dietitian Julie Upton recommends replacing "low-quality carbs or other foods rich in saturated fats" with foods high in MUFAs and PUFAs to help accommodate the extra calories. Check out our list of some of the best sources of unsaturated fats below, and keep these numbers in mind while you adjust to adding more fat to your diet.
