9 Things to Cut Out of Your Life to Be Healthy

Many of you are here to improve your diet and overall well-being and to start cutting certain things out of your life. But that doesn't always mean junk food or sweets - we've got some habits that might be holding you back from your healthy goals that you should definitely consider eliminating for good.

Here's what we're cutting out of our lives to have our healthiest year yet.

  1. Negative self-talk: Stop being mean to yourself. Just stop. You are enough! You are strong! You're capable. Start giving yourself more compliments, and make this year about no negative self-talk - ever. The more you berate and degrade yourself, the harder your year will be; you'll also have a much harder time reaching your healthy goals.
  2. Your scale: Look, quantifiable goals are great, but the scale can be an evil enemy, and doctors agree! If you've been obsessed with the scale and every decimal point on your weight, it's time for that thing to go. In the trash. Forever. Remember that a number on a scale doesn't reflect the hard work you're putting in, and the numbers absolutely do not define you.
  3. Workouts you hate: Not everyone likes running, and that's OK. Forcing yourself into a workout that you hate definitely won't encourage you to keep working out. There are alternatives to running and so many other kinds of cardio exercises. If you hate bootcamp classes, try barre. Hate barre? Stop doing it! Try yoga. If something's not working, try a new studio or new instructor. Keep going until you find something that clicks, but absolutely do not keep going to a class or attempting a workout you don't like.
  4. Exercising to "fix" or change a part of your body: Working out because you "hate" your body is the worst thing you can do. Exercise makes you feel good - it celebrates your body, makes you feel empowered, and sends a rush of feel-good endorphins through your body. Working out will boost your energy, will improve your health, and can change your mood for the better, alongside so many other benefits. Celebrate your body; don't try to "fix" it.
  5. Kale (or that one food you just can't stand): A lot of you hate kale. So stop forcing it! You don't need kale to be healthy! Maybe it's not kale, but it's another healthy food you've been forcing yourself to eat under the pretense that it's healthy and you "need it" to be healthy yourself. This just isn't true, and if your diet consists of things you don't love, you're not going to stay on that diet for very long. For a more sustainable diet, experiment more with other healthy foods to find out what you do love. You'll be eating healthier all the time!
  6. Perfectionism: Striving for a goal is great; striving for perfection is unhealthy. Giving yourself unrealistic or unattainable goals is detrimental to your mental and your physical health. That desire for perfectionism can often be a defense mechanism, when you're either consciously or subconsciously protecting yourself from the judgment of others. Focus that energy on progress, not perfection, and you'll have a much better year.
  7. Calorie counting: This year, stop obsessing over calories, especially if it has created a negative relationship with food. Food is fuel, and we need calories to have strong muscles, strong bones, and a functioning body! There are so many ways to track your food and eat healthy without calorie counting. If you need the data and numbers to stay in control of your healthy eating, try looking into counting macros - you'll have a healthy balance of protein, fats, and carbohydrates each day.
  8. Stress: Whether you have clinical anxiety or you've been stressing way too much, your compromised mental health can have a seriously negative impact on your health. Stress can cause weight gain, bloating, physical pain, skin problems, and more. Quite a setback for your healthiest year yet, right? To relax and cut out stress, get yourself a great therapist, or try a self-care practice like diffusing essential oils.
  9. Everything that is holding you back: What is keeping you from being your best self and living your best life? Is it an unhealthy relationship, a terrible job that drains you of your energy, or a deep-seated fear? Let. It. Go. Cut the people out who don't support you. Say goodbye to work that doesn't make you feel good, or worse, makes you feel bad. Remove unnecessary obligations that keep you from reaching your physical, mental, and personal goals. This is your time! Replace these things with activities that help you reach your goals, a job that fosters your creativity and empowers you, and relationships with people who build you up.

5 Reasons Working Out at Night Will Change Your Life

I don't like to work out in the morning. I'm not a morning person. The aroma of coffee isn't something that wakes me with a smile. The light shining through the blinds at the crack of dawn is something I avoid as much as possible. The heaviest thing I want to be lifting in the morning before work is my pillow. As I said, I'm not a morning person. But wait, we're supposed to work out in the morning, right? Actually, no. You don't have to. In fact, there are a bunch of reasons you should train at night. I do and it changed my life from the first time I tried it.

First things first: Let's put the elephant in the room to bed. You won't be kept awake by training in the evening. That's an old lie that morning people cooked up with their elaborate breakfasts while we were hitting the snooze button and getting a well-deserved rest. In fact, a National Sleep Foundation study found that there was no difference in the quality of sleep for those who exercised vigorously in the evening.

1. You'll sleep better!
Numerous studies like this one have shown that people who lift weights in the evening have better sleep quality and duration than those who lift in the morning or afternoon hours. So, it will actually help you sleep better at night. Not only is a good rest imperative for muscle growth and recovery, but sleeping deeper and longer will enable you to feel better and fully rested by morning. You should definitely be more perky and ready to face the day ahead.

2. You'll have better workouts!
In addition to helping you sleep better, several studies found that training in the evening was the path to significant greater muscular gains and improved endurance. What does that mean for you? You can get more out of your workout if you train at night!

3. You'll have lower blood pressure!
A Journal of Strength Conditioning Research study found that people who trained at night lowered their blood pressure by 15 percent more than those who worked out in the morning.

4. You'll have better results, sooner!
A study from The New England University of Birmingham found that those who work out in the evening can go 20 percent longer and at a higher intensity. That means even more burned calories at night and the residual benefits of better workouts: tighter arms, stronger legs, leaner abs, and an overall healthier life!

5. Your body will be primed to work out!
Not just because you will be getting more recovery sleep and burning more calories either. According to research, our cortisol levels are higher in the mornings, which can inhibit muscle growth. But, testosterone levels are higher in the evening, which will boost muscle growth. So this is a great way to get those results even quicker.

With all these amazing benefits of working out at night, are you ready to give it a try? Go ahead, mix up your routine and see how much better you sleep, feel, and advance in your fitness goals. It just might change your life!

Tried and Tested: The Best Laundry Detergent For Your Fitness Gear

When I work out, I sweat - a lot - and this happens at just about every workout you can think of. It's not unusual for me to walk out of a Pilates class looking like I just completed 60 minutes of Spin. And sadly, my sweat does not smell like roses. It's gross, but it's my reality.

While regular detergent might work on a pair of jeans, this does not hold true to my soaked-in-sweat workout gear. Before discovering detergent that actually got the funk out of my sports bras, capris, and tanks, it wasn't unusual for me to do an entire load of my favorite fitness items, just to find offensive odors still lingering once everything was dry. After playing around with plenty of DIY solutions and testing every detergent I could get my hands on, I've found three solid choices that work. Unlike most detergents, they don't leave a weird residue behind, won't harm the technical properties of good workout gear, and most importantly, eliminate that funk a good session at the gym is sure to leave behind.

Weightlifting, MyFitnessPal, and a Great Coach: Chelsea's Key to Weight Loss Success

Twenty-four-year-old Chelsea Martin of Colorado Springs, CO, had dreams of getting in figure-competitor shape, but "life got in the way," and she fell off the wagon.

Chelsea: Before

Fortunately, she had the drive to pick herself back up and equip herself with the necessary tools to get strong and follow her dreams. Her secrets to success? Weightlifting, MyFitnessPal for macro tracking, and a fantastic coach at Gold's Gym. Chelsea treated finding the perfect gym like finding the perfect college, and she found the right fit with a personal trainer who she meshed with immediately. Here's more on Chelsea's amazing story of hard work and determination, with incredibly simple tips you can apply to your own healthy journey.

POPSUGAR: What made you decide to start your weight-loss journey?

Chelsea Martin: I have always been intrigued by fitness and the human body - the limits it can both withstand and break through. My fascination with exercise began in high school. I was never the skinniest or most athletic (although Lord knows I tried!). I would watch figure competitions on TV or on the internet and wonder what it must be like to look like those women on stage. Not only did I envy their physical beauty, but the confidence that these women portrayed. It was a delicate finesse between total badass and radiant beauty.

Self-confidence is something I feel everyone struggles with at some point or another, and I had been struggling for years. I was investing my time in the perceptions of others and their approval of my actions. When I took a job across country, where I had no family or friends, I realized that I could be anyone I wanted to be. I got to choose how I wanted to start my new life, and that's when I put my focus on what my heart desired for myself. Being a figure competitor was always a dream, but I decided I was going to make it a reality. I wanted to be someone for girls to look up to. I wanted people to see me and see that same strong, confident beauty that I had so badly wanted for so many years.

I hate to say that "life happened," but essentially that's what it came down to. Going through college, I was so wrapped up in school, work, family, and trying to balance a social life that I let exercise and diet fall off the grid. I aimlessly fueled my body with whatever I could find. I also sought food for comfort; I'm very much a stress eater. Working 12-hour night shifts, going through nursing school, and many, many late nights with very few hours of sleep certainly didn't help that.

PS: What drew you to Gold's Gym, specifically?

CM: Picking a gym is like picking a college. A lot of people will tell you "it just felt right" or "it just feels like home." Initially, I thought to myself, "Where can I go that will provide me the greatest opportunity at being successful in my journey to competing?" There are many commercial gyms near my neighborhood, but Gold's was the only gym that made me FEEL like I was in the right place. As I surveyed all the different barbell and dumbbell options, cable machines, cardio equipment, and other amenities, I was impressed.

However, it wasn't WHAT Gold's Gym offered, it was WHO . . . from the front-desk workers to my coach to the other members working out every day, bettering themselves. Gold's offers an environment that makes me want to come back every day so I can share my journey with others and they can continue to motivate me with theirs. Gold's has honestly become my family out here, and going to work out is the best part of my day because I get to spend time with people who genuinely invest in helping others better themselves and reach goals that may have seemed unattainable.

"Lifting weights consistently and being mindful of my diet by tracking macros has been the most effective for my body."

Before Gold's, I feel like I had tried just about everything! I have tried DVDs, YouTube exercise videos, different diet fads, detoxes and cleanses, diet pills, hours of cardio . . . you name it. Lifting weights consistently and being mindful of my diet by tracking macros has been the most effective for my body. Everyone's body reacts differently to different methods, but this has been the longest-lasting and most rewarding. I have energy, and it has given me a healthier relationship with nutrition and how I am fueling my body.

PS: What's your favorite way to work out?

CM: Weightlifting, hands down. Dumbbells, barbells . . . get me to a rack, and I'm one happy girl.

PS: What's your weekly exercise schedule?

CM: I usually train my big muscle groups (back, shoulders, and legs) twice a week. I will sometimes supplement those muscle groups with more targeted accessory muscles. For example, since I lift shoulders twice a week, one day may be shoulders and chest, and the other day may be shoulders and arms. I will typically do cardio three to four times a week, either fasted in the morning or post-workout to keep my metabolism revved after I leave the gym. I try to mix it up between HIIT and steady-state to help keep my workouts fresh.

Chelsea: After

PS: How do you keep workouts exciting?

CM: When it comes to weights, I like to vary the volume and intensity. For example, one of my leg days during the week may focus more on heavier weight with less reps, and then my second day will focus on a higher volume of reps with lighter weight to help burn that muscle that has already been fatigued earlier in the week. I also don't just lift. I like to add in resistance bands, plyometric exercises, and various bodyweight exercises to help keep my muscles confused. Each of these methods helps target different muscle fibers, again keeping my body confused and helping to burn fat.

PS: How much weight have you lost?

CM: Since I started exercising regularly (October 2016 to June 2017), I've lost 26 pounds.

PS: What was the first big difference, other than the number on the scale, that really made you feel proud and excited?

CM: When people I looked up to in the gym approached me and told me that I was motivation for them. Talk about a totally surreal feeling!

PS: How do you track your weight loss?

CM: I don't like to rely on the scale to measure my weight loss. I take a lot of progress pictures. Although it feels awkward, it is super validating to look back after a month, or even a week or two, and watch how your body is changing and adapting to your lifestyle choices. I also feel it is the healthiest way to track progress because you see YOU, not a number. I love when people guess my weight now, because nine times out of 10, they are way under.

PS: Do you count calories? What's the range of calories you eat per day?

CM: I don't count calories, but I do count macros. This has helped me identify what my body responds to the best as a fuel source and has taught me to be extremely mindful of what is in the food that I'm putting into my body.

"Taking progress pictures is the healthiest way to track progress because you see YOU, not a number."

I like to use the MyFitnessPal app on my iPhone. It's totally free, and it's super easy to use. It even has restaurant menus programmed so I can plan my meals ahead of time if I know where my friends and I are going for dinner. It was kind of tedious at first to track everything, but it helps give you an idea of where you're starting at and how you can manipulate your total carbs and fats and proteins for the day to make sure the food you are putting in your body is both delicious and beneficial for your fitness journey.

Chelsea: Before and After

PS: What are the healthy staples that are always in your fridge?

CM: Oikos Triple Zero yogurt, Quest or Oh Yeah! ONE protein bars, Kodiak Cakes (protein flapjacks), salted-caramel rice cakes with honey, peanut butter with apples, SmartPop! popcorn, and pickles.

PS: How do you strategize for meals out?

CM: MyFitnessPal app. Love it!! I seriously use it every time I must go out with family or friends to dinner. It is a lifeline for staying on track with my fitness journey.

PS: What role did Gold's Gym play in your journey? Would you recommend it?

CM: Gold's played a HUGE part in where I'm at today. Without Gold's, I would have never been connected with my amazing coach, Max, who has been my compass through this crazy fitness journey, helping me navigate macros and workouts. He's also been a huge support system, both in and out of the gym. I can honestly say that without Max's help and genuine passion to help me crush this seemingly impossible fitness goal, I would not have been successful. I would highly recommend personal training and classes at Gold's. The staff are encouraging, upbeat, and real. They invest in you and want to see you succeed. As a client, that makes me want to work harder because I don't want to let them down. It's a healthy motivator.

PS: What advice do you have for anyone starting out on a weight-loss journey?

CM: The hardest part is starting. Make a goal. Write it down. And when you wake up every morning, remind yourself of that goal and envision it happening. I'm a firm believer that we are magnets: what we put into the universe, we attract to ourselves. Put out positive energy and good vibes; you will get it right back. Be encouraging and motivating to others, and they will encourage and motivate you. Envision your dreams as a reality, and if you work hard enough, they soon will be.

I Did This Once a Month, and It Was the Key to My Weight-Loss Success

I was determined to lose the belly fat I've had since high school, that progressively grew from my addiction to sugar, cheese, and refined carbs (aka Swedish fish and grilled cheese) in college, and then from two pregnancies. Running 30 to 40 miles a week and eating healthy wasn't cutting it - a big change was necessary. My youngest was 3 and a half, so the baby weight had overstayed its welcome big time. I went a little extreme and signed up for CrossFit. After one month of classes five times a week, I saw my body beginning to change and felt so much stronger and more confident, and I was hooked. I decided to give it six months, convinced I'd be completely ripped by then.

Month 1 vs. Month 6

But I wasn't. Far from it. My belly fat was still there, I had actually gained a few pounds, my upper body looked thicker, and my sports bras and jeans fit tighter. I was a little embarrassed and very discouraged and seriously considered quitting CrossFit. But taking progress photos every single month kept me motivated. When the first week of the month rolled around, I'd put on the same Lululemon shorts and sports bra and take a selfie of my front, side, and back.

When I'd look at the latest photo, I'd frown a little, not seeing the image I had in my mind of my goal body. But then when I'd look at that photo compared to my starting photo, I could see results! My progression was slow. And some months, it even looked like I was going backward. Lighting, angles, time of day, what I ate the night before, and whether or not I felt bloated all affected how these images looked, so I had to remind myself that.

Months 1 through 12

But seeing these photos and the small changes in my body was the motivation I needed. If I only had the disappointing and increasing scale numbers to go by, I would have felt very defeated. Actually seeing my body change from month to month, regardless of numbers on the scale, was essential to the success of my journey.

If you're frustrated by the numbers on the scale, or you're against weighing yourself completely and want a way to keep track of your progress (and your muscles!), get out the camera. Pick an outfit you'll wear every time, and take the damn photos. You don't have to show anyone. Even if you know you didn't eat great or exercise much that month, take the photos! They'll keep you accountable and inspired to stay on the journey to a healthier, more fit you.

Month 1 vs. Month 12

OMFG, This Washington Couple Built an Exact Life-Size Replica of Snow White's Cottage

"Storybook" doesn't even begin to describe how over the top this replica of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' home is. Not a single detail was overlooked in the Olalla, WA, cottage: stained glass windows abound, the artisanal doors feature custom ironwork, wood beams are hand-carved, and walls and corners are all rounded as to be true to the fairy-tale-based movie. The home is truly a magical work of art - and it can be yours for a cool $775,000.

While there are only four bedrooms - notably not enough for each of the dwarfs to have their own sleeping quarters - the stucco property is a spacious 2,800 square feet and sits on a sprawling five acres thoughtfully landscaped with exotic trees. Rick Ellis of John L. Scott Real Estate holds the listing and writes that if you don't want to move in yourself, the fantastical property is prime for a bed and breakfast or wedding business. Just imagine how much guests will love walking across the whimsical stone arch bridge or peeking into the giant "ogre's stump."

The Kitsap Sun reports that Richey and Karen Morgan began building the home in the 1970s, meticulously crafting every detail and adding addition after addition over the decades. The current owner, Evonne Bess, bought the cottage in 2005, completed the project, and is now selling the beloved home with a heavy heart. Check out this one-of-a-kind property for yourself ahead.

The Fastest Way to Lose Fat? This 4-Minute, Science-Backed Exercise

Boost your heart health, blast calories, and maximize your weight-loss potential in just four minutes. Seriously! How? With Tabata - the style of high-intensity interval training that is proven to get you fitter faster.

Tabata is not as much a "workout" as it is a method of how to work out. It's 20 seconds of high-intensity work (going as quickly and intensely as you can!), with 10 seconds of rest, repeated eight times for a total of four minutes.

Dr. Izumi Tabata is the man behind the namesake of this style of HIIT training, originally known as "Tabata Protocol," though he credits Olympic speed skating coach Irisawa Koichi for the technique. He's pioneered and spearheaded studies that have proven the efficacy of Tabata training for fat loss and cardiovascular improvement (in other words, getting slimmer and more fit).

The moves are up to you - you can make it as simple as two moves (like squats and push-ups, for instance), or you can mix it up with different moves targeting different muscle groups.

Getting your heart rate into that peak zone is ideal for shedding fat, and HIIT is proven to be the best way to lose weight quickly - in a healthy way. It incinerates calories and blasts belly fat by conditioning your body to use fat stores as fuel.

Try a 20-minute Tabata super-set video, a 30-minute session, or a 45-minute Tabata workout if you want to work on your endurance. The format of 20 seconds on, 10 seconds off will continue - just with more repetitions - as you build up the time of your workout. Going phone-free at the gym? Print out a PDF to take with you and get to your Tabata super set!

Antiabortion Congressman Reportedly Urged a Woman He Had an Affair With to Have an Abortion

Republican Pennsylvania Rep. Tim Murphy (pictured above, far left) was the subject of a stunning story published in The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Oct. 3, which reports that the married, publicly antiabortion lawmaker encouraged a woman he had an affair with to abort. Murphy is one of the cosponsors of the "Pain-Capable Unborn Child Act," which is widely referred to as the 20-week abortion ban. Pro-choice advocates have countered that the legislation relies on "junk science" to undermine the rights guaranteed by Roe v. Wade. The story on Rep. Murphy was published just hours before the House was set to vote on the legislation.

Murphy is also member of the House Pro-Life Caucus who, in 2015, was awarded for his commitment to "family values, religious freedom, human life, and individual liberty" by the conservative Christian Family Research Council. Last month, he admitted to an affair with Shannon Edwards. The paper reports that in January of this year, Edwards - concerned she may be pregnant - sent the following text to Murphy: "And you have zero issue posting your pro-life stance all over the place when you had no issue asking me to abort our unborn child just last week when we thought that was one of the options."

Later the same day, the paper says, a text from Murphy's number replied: "I get what you say about my March for life messages. I've never written them. Staff does them. I read them and winced. I told staff don't write any more. I will."

Edwards's text, the paper claims, followed a Facebook post by Murphy that read, in part: "The United States is one of just seven countries worldwide that permits elective abortion more than halfway through pregnancy (beyond 20 weeks). It is a tragic shame that America is leading the world in discarding and disregarding the most vulnerable." The post went on to state Murphy's commitment to a bill that would prohibit the use of federal funds to pay for abortion and his hope that "we will once again be a nation committed to honoring life from the moment of conception."

The text messages were among a sheaf of documents the paper said it obtained. Those also included a lengthy memo from Murphy's chief of staff, Susan Mosychuk, alleging a hostile workplace. The paper reports that Mosychuk wrote that Murphy created an atmosphere of "terror" by berating and threatening his staff. According to the Post-Gazette, she also described Murphy as "erratic" and "abusive" in the memo, and described an episode in which he drove put staff members at risk driving in a rainstorm while playing on his iPad, watching YouTube, and texting. The paper also reports that she recalled an instance in which Murphy verbally abused and chastised an employee before pushing a pile of documents to the floor, then demanding his staff pick them up.

Murphy represents Pennsylvania's 18th congressional district. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, "repeated voice mail messages" left on his cell phone on Oct. 2 went unanswered. POPSUGAR has contacted Murphy's Pittsburgh office requesting comment and will update this story if we hear back.

How Do You Get on The Bachelor or Bachelorette? Follow These Steps

Admit it. At one time or another, you've thought about what it would be like to go on one of the shows we love to hate and hate to love - The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. After all, most of us want to find that forever partner (and ride off into the sunset, preferably in a helicopter overlooking a tropical island). But what does it really take to get from just a thought to actually appearing on the hit ABC show? Here's everything you need to know!

Make Sure You Meet the Eligibility Requirements

First off, anyone related or closely connected to employees of the show aren't allowed to apply to be the Bachelor or Bachelorette, or a contestant pining to be with one of them. You also can't currently be a candidate in any type of political office or become one from when you submit your application to one year after the first broadcast of the last episode. All applicants must be single, at least 21 years old, and a US citizen or resident or foreign alien without restrictions on coming in or out of the country. Make sure you also have a passport (hello, exotic trips!) and are clean of a felony conviction, misdemeanor conviction, or restraining order. Oh, and make sure you realize that you will be on television and your life will basically be an open book. Ready for the next step?

Send in an Application, Pictures, and Video

It's time to shine! You can submit an application through mail or online, and you can even submit one for someone else! Be prepared, because it's probably more in-depth than any application you're used to. It'll ask about your salary, if you've ever filed for bankruptcy, how your previous relationships ended, etc. You can also attach your social media accounts (so finally all those cute pictures you took at brunch have a real purpose)!

Pictures are a must and a video is encouraged so you can show off your personality. They have seven suggested questions to answer in the video (from your ideal fantasy date to any special talents). However, they want you to have fun and be creative, so really get into it!

Attend a Casting Call

If you get this far (woo!), you'll probably be asked to come to a nearby major city for a casting call so the producers can get to know you in person. Depending on what happens there, you'll either move forward in the process as the casting directions narrow down the group or not be seen as a fit.

Good luck and cheers to many roses, one-on-one time, and an unbelievable journey!

How Horror Movie The Strangers Is - and Isn't - Based on a "True Story"

The 2018 horror movie slate is already building up quite the repertoire. In addition to a fourth Insidious film and an epic Halloween reboot, we're also getting a sequel to 2008's The Strangers. In this next installment, The Strangers 2, another evil trio torments a family in a trailer park. As far as we can tell, it's not based on a true story. Which, actually, brings us back to one of the most contentious facts about the original film. Did you think The Strangers actually happened in real life? After all, the original teaser trailer posited that it was "inspired by true events." Well, we've got some news for you.

In 2008, The Strangers, one of the most unsettling movies ever, hit theaters. It wasn't so much that the film, starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, boasted a unique concept; it's your typical, bloody home invasion film. And though it's a decent horror film, it's not the execution that makes it so disturbing either. The real reason The Strangers freaks so many people out - my brother, a die-hard horror fan like me, calls it the scariest horror movie ever - is because of the way it was marketed. In addition to the whole "true events" aspect, the full-length trailer revealed the bombshell phrase mumbled by one of the killers at the end of the film. When Tyler's character asks the killers why they've spent 90 minutes terrorizing and brutalizing her and her partner, one of them answers, "Because you were home."

These kinds of "true story" movies have a long history of stretching the truth, and The Strangers may be guilty of one of the biggest stretches ever.

That quote perfectly exploits a fear in the average person. We watch these three masked villains torture a young couple for no other reason except that they happen to be home. The jump in logic is easy: if a random group of murderers can pick a random house and kill a random couple because they're randomly home . . . this could feasibly happen to anyone, anywhere. And since it's "inspired by true events," this whole "it could happen to me" scenario is that much more likely and that much scarier. Here's the thing, though: these kinds of "true story" movies have a long history of stretching the truth, and The Strangers may be guilty of one of the biggest stretches ever.

According to the film's production notes, The Strangers was based on an experience the director, Bryan Bertino, had when he was young. "As a kid, I lived in a house on a street in the middle of nowhere. One night, while our parents were out, somebody knocked on the front door and my little sister answered it," Bertino recounted. "At the door were some people asking for somebody that didn't live there. We later found out that these people were knocking on doors in the area and, if no one was home, breaking into the houses." So, really, the only thing the story shared with reality was a group of strangers knocking on a door to a random house and making a decision based on whether or not the owners were home.

In situations like this, the language of the statement is most important. This wasn't "based on a true story;" it was "inspired by true events." Bertino experienced something, and it inspired his fictional movie. Which, not to be rude, is the creative process for any kind of storyteller, filmmaker, novelist, or otherwise. It's like that old, unattributed quote: "Write what you know." It seems, this time around, The Strangers 2 isn't being touted with the "true story" hook. It might still be good, but I can't help but think that will take away some of the impact.

Do These 3 Simple Things Every Day to Lose Weight Effortlessly

Losing weight doesn't feel great when you only focus on restricting your diet and exercising like crazy. It doesn't have to be that hard, though! Incorporating simple changes into your daily life can yield HUGE results. Here are three painless weight-loss strategies you can use to reach your goals.

Add, Don't Subtract

You probably won't lose weight pounding piece after piece of pizza and pints of ice cream, so you're making a healthy decision by ditching these kinds of foods. A simple mind shift can make all the difference in you being able to stick with limiting those foods and, more importantly, being happy about it. Don't think of all the foods you can't or shouldn't have - discover and rejoice in all the new and healthy foods you can eat.

Think it's impossible to get psyched about veggies? Learning how to make nutritious meals more exciting will be key to this. Skip the boring bowl of lettuce, cucumber, and carrots and make a kale, white bean, and maple-roasted butternut squash salad instead. Take a cooking class or play around with recipes to find healthier versions of the foods you like. For example, this lasagna is made with tofu, but you'd never know! And while grocery shopping, choose produce that's in season, because their flavors will inspire you to eat more fruits and veggies.

Stand More Than You Sit

Research shows the effects of sitting all day can be deadlier than smoking, but we also know standing burns more calories than sitting. So get up! Whenever possible, choose to stand while eating breakfast, checking email, having a meeting, waiting at the doctor's office, or at happy hour. If you have a desk job, invest in a standing desk. Aim to stand more than you sit during your waking hours.

Put It on Display

Putting healthy foods out where you can see them makes you more likely to reach for them when cravings strike. Keep fresh apples, bananas, pears, oranges, and avocados in a bowl on your counter. When you open your cupboard or pantry, have protein bars, nuts, and homemade 100-calorie snack packs staring back at you in one container. When you open the fridge, put healthy foods at eye level right in the front, such as baby carrots, sugar snap peas, hummus, apples, and yogurt. Or better yet, keep containers of cut-up bell peppers, cucumbers, melon, and washed grapes so they're quick and easy to nosh on. The goal here is to make healthy foods as easy and accessible as a bag of chips.

The Chilling Story Behind the Winchester Mystery House and the Woman Who Built It

The story of Sarah Winchester and the Winchester Mystery House is bizarre, intriguing, and spooky as hell. Though it's been a fairly well-known tale for some time, it's attracted more attention due to the upcoming thriller, Winchester, starring Helen Mirren as the titular character.

Sarah Lockwood Pardee was born in New Haven, CT, around 1839. In her early 20s, she married Oliver Winchester of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Several years later, Sarah gave birth to a daughter, Annie. Tragically, Annie died just a month later from marasmus, or severe malnutrition.

From that point on, Sarah's luck only worsened. In the early 1880s, her father-in-law passed away, and then so did her husband from tuberculosis a year later. Though she received an inheritance of $20 million - as well as partial ownership of the family's firearms company - she never remarried and was alone for the rest of the her life.

If she stopped adding to her property, Sarah would meet her untimely death.

Then, things got weird. For some reason, Sarah got in touch with a medium. Legend has it that Sarah started to feel as though she was being haunted, but it's more likely that she spoke to the medium in an attempt to communicate with her late husband. The medium allegedly told Sarah that her family was cursed by all of those who had been killed by Winchester guns. Inexplicably, she recommended that Sarah move out west, build a home, and continue working on that home basically forever to appease the spirits. If she stopped adding to her property, Sarah would meet her untimely death.

This origin story has been debated by historians and biographers. However, around 1886, Sarah did end up moving to San Jose, CA, where she bought an unfinished eight-room farmhouse. Sarah promptly began construction, and from that point on, she did not stop expanding and adding to the home. There were windows where there didn't need to be, staircases leading nowhere, and an unusual amount of fireplaces. The house ended up having somewhere around 160 rooms. Sarah had pretty much become an obsessive HGTV host.

When an earthquake hit in 1906, Sarah reportedly got trapped in a room for several hours and felt as though she was being punished again by the Winchester curse. Freaked out, Sarah stopped construction on the house, boarded it up, and began living full-time in her other two properties. Her sudden departure can also explain why the architecture of the house is so strange - it's technically unfinished!

In 1922, Sarah died of heart failure at 83. Now, the Winchester Mystery House is a National Historic Landmark and visitors are able to explore the house through guided tours. If you're especially brave, you can also take a candlelight tour during the month of October. Winchester will hit theaters on Feb. 23, 2018.

6 Steps to Take to Wind Down For a Good Night's Sleep

There's a lot of advice on how to create a good bedtime routine for a baby, but not so much for adults. We can take a few tips from the classic "bath, book, bed" regime that's often rolled out for infants, though. For a while I had difficulty falling asleep, and then struggled to sleep well through the night, so I made a few changes to the period before bedtime, and they made all the difference.

1. Screens Off

One of the hardest changes I made was limiting my screen time late at night, but the evidence was undeniable - on the nights when I worked on my computer right up to bedtime, it took me ages to settle down to sleep. The scientific reason to make this change is that blue light from your devices can disrupt circadian and melatonin rhythms, which basically means your body thinks it's daytime. A lot of guidelines recommend turning off screens one hour before bed, but if you can't manage that, try to turn off your electronics at least 20 minutes before your head hits the pillow. There are plenty of other things you can do in that time; here are a few that work for me.

2. Bath

I've always enjoyed the relaxing effects of a hot bath, but I tended to have one earlier in the evening. When I moved bath time closer to bedtime, I found it helped me to fall asleep. You could add essential oils that are said to have sleep-inducing properties, like lavender. If you're not a bath fan, try a shower instead. When you come out of warm water into a cooler bedroom, the drop in your body temperature sends signals to your body that it's time to rest. You also have the benefit of being clean, and we all know how uncomfortable (not to mention unhygienic) it is to sleep with makeup on.

3. Book

. . . or music or a podcast. Basically, if you still need something to help you wind down once you're under the sheets, you can try anything that doesn't involve a screen. I favor a book, and one that's not too exciting (nor too heavy), as I often fall asleep while reading.

4. Notes

In that quiet time before sleep, my brain often fills with reminders. When I used to keep my phone in my bedroom, I would use that to make notes. That's a big no-no. Not only did that then suck me into a drawn-out spiral of checking emails and social media, but it also meant I was engaging in screen time at entirely the wrong time. Now I keep a pen and notepad by the bed so I can scribble down reminders the old-fashioned way. That's one of the 12 steps I took to kick my phone habit.

5. Stretch

It's often only when I stretch out in bed that I realize how achy my body feels. I've been cramped up at a desk for most of the day, and I'm not at all good about taking regular stretch breaks during daylight hours. So I make up for it a bit at bedtime by really stretching out my legs and shoulders, in particular. Since doing this, I've woken less in the night with aches and pains. There are even yoga moves you can do in bed if, like me, you don't make time to do them during the day.

6. Breathe

Finally, when I'm still trying to nod off, I try breathing meditation. If your mind wanders, try some techniques to maintain focus, like visualizing your thoughts floating past like clouds, or focusing on the subtle sensation of breath at the tip of the nostrils, or bringing your attention to each part of your body in turn. There's also a 4-7-8 breathing technique, which can help with anxiety, too.

9 Song Lyrics From the '90s That Made Absolutely ZERO Sense

Oh, the '90s. Not only did you give us the beloved Tamagotchis and Clarissa Explains It All, but you graced us with life-changing music. Even though you blessed us with the original boy bands, some of the lyrics that came with them were a little questionable. Honestly, it pains my heart to say anything negative about the musical geniuses that filled my portable CD player back in the day. After all, I couldn't imagine making it through my middle school graduation if I didn't belt out "Graduation (Friends Forever)" by Vitamin C with my best friend beforehand. But sometimes it's better to acknowledge the bad so that we can move on - with these '90s stars in that special place in our hearts forever, of course.

Michelle Obama on the Women Who Voted For Trump: They "Voted Against Their Own Voice"

Since the 2016 election, countless articles and books have tackled the same quandry: just how it is that women could vote for President Donald Trump. On Sept. 27, former first lady Michelle Obama came up with an answer to that very question. Speaking at marketing conference Inbound, she said "Any woman who voted against Hillary Clinton, voted against their own voice." Obama went on to explain that women casting their vote for Trump said a whole lot more about the women themselves than about Clinton.

"It doesn't say as much about Hillary, and everybody's trying to worry about what it means for Hillary and no, no, no, what does this mean for us, as women? That we look at those two candidates, as women, and many of us said, 'He's better for me. His voice is more true to me,'" Obama said, adding, "To me that just says, you don't like your voice. You like the thing you're told to like."

The former first lady's comments were made during a question and answer panel with author Roxane Gay. While Obama was critical of those female Trump voters, she stated that her and former president Barack Obama are wishing Trump the best. "We've chosen to be supportive of this administration," Obama said. She also took time to once again remind people about the importance of the Affordable Care Act. "The Affordable Care Act isn't Barack's legacy. It's the country legacy," Obama said.

The former first lady also left the audience with a few tidbits of advice, speaking on how she's managed to get as far as she has in life. "If I was successful in any way, it's because I was always Michelle Robinson Obama first before anything else," Obama said. She encouraged everyone to use their voice, speak up, and stay true to who they are. "Take a moment to know yourself," Obama said. "Know your truth. Don't let what other people say define you." It's a lesson we should all remind ourselves of every day.

Sherwin-Williams's Color of 2018 Is Opulent and Mysterious - and That's How We Like It

Can a color evoke an emotion? Sherwin-Williams thinks so. It just released its color of 2018: Oceaniside, a complex marine blue enriched with green jewel tones. In a statement, the paint company explained that the hue was inspired by wanderlust and could even encourage creative thinking. "People today have a growing sense of adventure, and it is making its way into even the coziest corners of our homes. We are craving things that remind us of bright folklore, like mermaids and expeditions across continents," explained Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams.

Beyond its stimulating properties, the color is also sure to be loved by interior designers for its versatility. It dazzles alongside bold pinks and golden yellows yet looks cool and refined beside traditional navy blues. The refreshing hue will undoubtedly become a design staple for those looking to take their space somewhere - or have their space take them somewhere, as the case may be.

6 Red Flags That You Are Buying Makeup That Doesn't Actually Work For You

We all do it. We bought our first foundation when we were in our 20s - and it really worked (then). We loved it, so when it ran out, we bought it again. And again. And again. Before we knew it, we were 35 years old buying something that was no longer the best choice.

I have been a professional makeup artist for 15 years, and I am guilty of it myself. We are tired and busy; we don't have time to sit down and really let a professional try 10 foundations on our jawline, so we just order on Amazon and have it delivered to our door. Yet when makeup doesn't match or doesn't fit our skin type, there's nothing worse. We get stuck in a rut, and we are afraid of change. But our skin and lifestyle has changed, and it's important to remember that what worked when we were 16 doesn't necessarily work when we are 30.

Here are six red flags that prove it's time to reassess the contents of your makeup bag.

How to Slash Calories and Sugar in Starbucks’s Maple Pecan Latte

Starbucks beverages have a funny way of pleasing our taste buds, but not our waistlines. Even still, a little treat every now and again is all part of a balanced lifestyle! So we had to try the Maple Pecan Latte from the coffee giant when it was released on the first day of Fall - and it's so worth it! (Sorry, PSL.) But if you're wondering how many exercises you'll have to do to burn off the espresso with steamed milk, maple syrup, pecan and brown butter, and sugar topping, we have all the nutritional info!

Serving Size Calories Sugar Fat Carbs Protein
Tall (12 oz.) 270 35 g. 8 g. 39 g. 9 g.
Grande (16 oz.) 340 45 g. 10 g. 51 g. 12 g.
Venti (20 oz.) 430 56 g. 13 g. 63 g. 15 g.

Bear in mind that those values are just based on the beverage without any alterations. The calories are certainly high, but the sugar? YIKES. Switch out the 2-percent milk for almond milk and a tall goes to 200 calories and 26 grams of sugar; a Grande goes to 260 calories and 34 grams of sugar (which is less than a tall with 2-percent milk); and a Venti goes to 330 calories and 42 grams of sugar. So, yeah . . . it's worth trying out, even if you're a little skeptical of the whole almond milk thing (which is delicious, by the way). Other ways to cut back on calories and/or include asking for less pumps of syrup, skipping the sugar topping, or requesting nonfat milk.

Iced Pecan Maple Lattes made with 2% milk have near identical nutritional details as their hot counterparts, so try that out with almond milk as well if you're looking to minimize the sugar high.

While it might not be the best idea to indulge in a Maple Pecan Latte every day, there are ways to make it healthier so that you can enjoy Fall drinks and not totally lose sight of your fitness goals!

So Walmart Just Launched Tropickles, aka Fruit-Punch-Flavored Pickles

Brace yourself for this news, pickle-lovers. There's a new snack coming your way that's going to change the way you think about pickles and fruit punch. Tropickles, aka tropical-fruit-punch-flavored pickles - get it? - have just launched exclusively at Walmart under the Great Value brand. And they're exactly what they sound (and look) like: your standard jar of cucumber pickles with a not-so-standard color and flavor thanks to the red fruit punch that they're soaking in.

While Walmart is the first store to launch an official Tropickle product, the company's spokespeople admit they're not the first to think of the idea. People have been making different versions of fruit-punch pickles (like Kool-Aid pickles) for years, predominantly in the South. And Walmart claims to have learned of the idea through social media. In a statement, Walmart said, "The modern-day couple, the pickle and fruit punch met on social media (they bonded over recipes on Pinterest, to be exact); now, we are celebrating their union on Walmart store shelves." It makes sense that the jars of Tropickles ($2) are not available at all Walmart stores, but at a select 1,400 stores predominantly in the South.

For those of you who have yet to experience such a fruity pickle, here's a quick rundown of what to expect based on our own taste test. POPSUGAR tried the pickles ahead of the launch, and our editors can confirm that Tropickles taste just as equally sweet and tangy as you'd imagine. Less acidic and much more sugary than a regular pickle, the Tropickles' flavor hits your mouth all at once upon your first bite. The fruit punch makes them seem even juicier, and there's no shortage of a tropical aftertaste. If you're an adventurous eater who loves both salty pickles and sweet fruit punch, you just might be surprised by how much you love this unexpected combo.

These babies arrived on store shelves on July 14, so keep your eyes peeled the next time you're grocery shopping at Walmart.

The 2015 study, first published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, followed the dietary habits of over 120,000 people for 16 years and found that those who ate foods that had a high glycemic load (which includes refined grains, starches, and sugars) gained more weight than those who ate foods with a low glycemic load (foods such as nuts, dairy, and certain fruits and vegetables). This isn't surprising or new; other research has shown that going lower on the glycemic index (GI) scale will help you lose weight. What is interesting in the new study, however, is that other key habits can mean the difference between pounds on the scale. Check out what else the researchers found about weight gain and loss:

  • Those who ate more yogurt, seafood, skinless chicken, and nuts lost the most weight; in fact, the more people ate of these foods, the less weight they gained.
  • The researchers found, however, no difference in weight gain in those who ate low-fat vs full-fat dairy.
  • Diets with more red and processed meat intake were associated with weight gain, especially when meat was paired with refined grains or starches.
  • Eating meat paired with low-GI foods, however (like vegetables), helped reduce weight gain.
  • Eating foods like eggs and cheese along with high-GI foods was linked to weight gain, while eating these foods with low-GI foods led to weight loss.

In general, the researchers found that the best diets for weight loss were high in protein-rich foods like fish, nuts, and yogurt, which helped prevent weight gain. Avoiding refined grains, starches, and sugars further helped, as did replacing red meat consumption with other protein-rich foods like eggs and cheese. It may seem like common sense, but taking the time to fill your plate with lean proteins and vegetables and other low-GI foods will help you lose or maintain weight throughout the years. The Key to Diana's 76-Pound Weight Loss: "Now I Only Eat When I'm Hungry"

Sometimes it takes a complete life change to realize you aren't living as healthily as possible. For Air Force veteran Diana Philpot, it took retiring from service for her to realize it was her career that had been keeping her healthy. Once she was no longer in the service, she said her weight climbed higher than ever before - until it reached the point where she'd had enough. Over the course of two years, Diana shed 76 pounds with the help of healthy eating, lots of exercise, and tracking everything in the Lose It! app. For more of her story, keep reading.

Diana before

POPSUGAR: How much weight have you lost?

Diana Philpot: I started at 206 pounds and currently weight 130, so I've lost 76 pounds.

PS: What got you started on your health journey? Had you tried any diets or programs in the past?

DP: As an active duty Airman for 30 years, I had weight and fitness standards to adhere to. Three times during my service I exceeded the maximum weight for my height and was enrolled in a weight loss program. The Air Force's program was overseen by a dietitian and exercise physiologist, and required two days of education, daily logging of food and exercise (in a paper log, pre-computer days), and weekly meetings and weigh-ins. Each time I was successful at losing the weight, but the number on the scale was my focus.

Then five years after retirement I had no such structured program or mandatory participation. My weight ballooned up more than 30 pounds. I was showing signs of pre-hypertension, pre-diabetes, and high cholesterol. My overall health was the catalyst this time, and I keep that focus firmly in mind, knowing this is a continuum rather than a fixed point where I can revert to old habits.

PS: What apps or aids do you use for weight loss?

DP: Primarily Lose It!, also Fitbit, Charity Miles app, Garmin GPS sports watch with HRM (a gift to myself at the 50-lbs lost milestone!). I use all of the features on Lose It! - from the social to the planning and goal setting. I signed up for Premium when I decided I wanted to track my fiber intake. Eventually I added a goal for almost every category in the goals area. I enjoy the motivation and encouragement shared with my friends list and in groups. I like the ability to compete with myself in challenges, and I'm in several at any given time. I often plan meals a day ahead of time so I know how I will handle a meal out, drinks with friends, or a day when I can't get as much exercise as I'd like.

"At the end of the day, the number on the scale is just a number. It doesn't define me."

POPSUGAR: Describe how your weight has influenced your life. For how long prior to losing weight were you aware of being overweight?

DP: Throughout my childhood and into early adulthood I was very thin, to the point of being teased by my family and my contemporaries well into my 20s. I was always very self-conscious because of this. In my late 20s I developed those coveted womanly curves and the teasing stopped, so I was happy.

After I married, I was eating more socially and even matching my husband's food intake despite his being three times more active than me. I gained weight gradually. But I was aware of being overweight by my early thirties by looking in the mirror and noticing my uniforms were tighter. And, in fact, that's the first time I was enrolled in the Air Force's weight loss program. And it's when I began buying clothing in larger sizes.

Since I had been so thin for so long, this was foreign to me, and it felt just as bad as when I was being teased for my low weight. I yo-yo'd up and down from my early 30s to my early 50s, when my weight just kept going up.

PS: Was there one specific or defining moment for you that made you realize you wanted to commit to yourself and work to lose the weight?

DP: My defining moment when I realized I wanted to commit to losing weight was a visit to my doctor in January 2015, when my weight was recorded at the highest I had ever seen. At that visit, my doctor told me I was destined for medications for the rest of my life to control several conditions. She suggested I could stand to lose 10 lbs, a gross understatement that I gently chastised her for later. If our doctors are unable to have that hard conversation with us, then how are we to understand the significance of our poor habits?

"I am light on my feet again. I've got nearly boundless energy. I feel sharper mentally."

PS: How has your eating behavior changed? Are you eating new foods or eating differently than you did before?

DP: Now I only eat when I'm hungry. I eat three meals a day instead of one large one. I snack more than I ever have. But the foods I eat are not processed or minimally processed, and they are nutrient dense or I don't put them in my mouth. I eat fruits and vegetables in abundance instead of as an afterthought. I eat red meat only four or five times a month, and each much more fish and chicken. I have at least one meal a week that is meatless, just because I like it.

PS: What does a typical day of eating and/or exercising look like for you now?

DP: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are smaller meals than before, but so varied in content that I feel full on fewer calories. I snack on fresh fruit, low-sodium beef jerky, nonfat Greek yogurt, boiled eggs, and quality high-protein bars such as from Pure Protein or NuGo Nutrition. I enjoy frozen yogurt instead of ice cream treats.

I strive for 75 minutes of exercise a day. I walk my dog daily, even in the summer. I practice yoga three times weekly. Most days I walk between three and five miles with my husband. Sometimes we run together - I'm just starting that activity, but he's been an avid runner all his life and now I can keep up with him for shorter distances. In the summer I bicycle to my local pool and swim laps for an hour at a time. In winter or summer if it's too unpleasant outside to walk or run, I use the elliptical machine at home. And I have started resistance training with bands and small hand weights.

PS: Was fitness a part of your weight loss plan? How did you incorporate fitness, and what types of activities did you do?

DP: Fitness was the initial area where I took action, as it was the most difficult for me. I had detested exercise. But I knew that if I wanted to enjoy my retired years traveling and hiking with my husband, I had to make changes to remain fit enough for those activities.

First I started with a yoga class, and my husband joined me. Come summer I began swimming, something I hadn't done in 35-40 years, and found out I loved it. I bicycled to and from our community pool, and I started taking a longer route home just to get more time on the bike. When the pool closed for the summer I was at a loss. When I couldn't find an affordable indoor pool in my area, I decided I had to bite the bullet and do something else. I chose to begin walking with a friend - who lives 200 miles away! At an agreed upon time we donned our walking shoes, picked up our cell phones, and walked out our respective front doors to walk our neighborhoods - but with the phone contact we had a walking partner and accountability. It worked very well! After months of walking and then run-walk intervals, I'm now able to run up to four miles.

"Decide what your reason is for losing weight, then keep it in the forefront of your mind."

I also enjoy kayaking, hiking, and camping when I can. During weight loss, I was trying to get 45 minutes a day of exercise. But about midway in my journey, I read that the US NIH advises 30 minutes of exercise daily for cardiovascular health, 60 minutes a day for weight maintenance, and 90 minutes a day for weight loss - I immediately upped my game to 90 minutes a day. Now I don't know what I did with all my time when I wasn't exercising at least an hour a day!

Diana before and after

PS: How has weight loss changed your life as a whole? What are some exciting moments, positive changes, and nonscale victories you have experienced?

DP: I am light on my feet again. I've got nearly boundless energy. I feel sharper mentally - probably from cleaning up my diet! And I've dropped more sizes in clothing - from XL and size 18 down to S and size 6 - than I would have ever thought possible. I know I look healthy now, and I feel better than I've felt in 25 years, or come to think of it, maybe ever.

And when shopping in a warehouse store, my husband saw two separate occasions of "gentlemen" checking me out when I wasn't looking. That happened to the 56-year-old me!

PS: If you could give your best advice to people trying to lose weight and stick with it, what would that advice be?

DP: 1) Decide what your reason is for losing weight, then keep it in the forefront of your mind. That is your motivation; no one else can provide that for you. Post it on your refrigerator, the bathroom mirror, or on your computer screen at work. Place a photo of the "before" you or of your goal prominently in your space. Heck, tattoo it if you must, but keep that reason where you are constantly reminded of it.
2) Know that losing weight is relatively easy, but to make it stay lost you have to commit to changing your life for good. This is not a diet, it's a way of living fully and healthily. If you feel deprived, you're not doing it right.
3) Even if you don't use an app, you should log your food and exercise, and weigh yourself daily. This is the accountability factor that will earn you success in weight loss and for the rest of your life. Without knowledge of exactly what you are doing and how it affects your body, you will flounder. You will make excuses for lack of progress. You will quit before you are done.
4) Never quit! No matter a poor food choice, a bad day, or a week when you gain instead of lose, if you quit, you won't get past it. If you learn from it, or just let it go and carry on, you might lose a battle here and there, but you will win the war!

How This Is Us Confirmed This Heartbreaking Theory About Jack's Death

UPDATE: This Is Us confirmed that Jack dies in a house fire during the season two premiere. While the details surrounding his death are still a bit unclear, the fire actually happens at the Pearson family home, not Miguel's house.

Original post: If you're a fan of This Is Us, then you've no doubt gone crazy theorizing how Jack dies. Throughout season one, there have been some pretty convincing ideas, including a real-life plane crash, drunk driving accident, and even an act of gun violence, but now another theory has come to light: he dies in a fire. Even though the season one finale didn't reveal anything about his death, it might have set it up for season two.

After getting in a major argument, Rebecca and Jack decide that they need some time apart. So the two come to an agreement that Jack will stay with Miguel, who we know is actually married to Rebecca in present day. While it's hard to believe that Rebecca would marry her husband's best friend, what if it's because a tragic event brings them together? Reddit user AFriendlyInternetGuy suggested that Jack might actually die a hero by trying to save Miguel in a house fire. Not only does the series finale perfectly set up this scenario, but it would also explain why Miguel's ex-wife Shelly and kids haven't popped up in present day.

While we assume that Miguel and Shelly are divorced by the time Jack moves in, maybe she was coming by to pick up the kids when the house goes up in flames, and Miguel is the only one who makes it out in time. Not only would that mutual loss bring Rebecca and Miguel closer together, but it would also explain why the Big Three holds a little bit of resentment for their stepfather. Perhaps that's also the reason Kate feels like her dad's death is her fault, since she tells him to make amends with Rebecca and the two end up separating as a result. This would no doubt be the most shocking twist yet.
