Kaitlyn Is Down 78 Pounds - 53 Just From Weightlifting

After a traumatic breakup from a long-term partner, Kaitlyn turned to food as a comfort and eventually hit her highest weight at 225 pounds. But things took a turn when she used exercise as a solace for depression. The Arizona-based engineer picked up weightlifting and almost immediately noticed the results on her body, but also on her mood and her brain. Her tips are practical and positive, and show just how much we can be capable of when we keep working hard and set goals.

Kaitlyn: Before

POPSUGAR: What made you decide to start your weight-loss journey?

Kaitlyn van Brunschot: I was fresh out of a six-and-a-half-year relationship and felt completely lost. I initially started my journey with weightlifting just to fill my time. Very quickly I began to realize that lifting weights made me feel great! It gave me so much confidence, so I just kept doing it. It's funny how quickly you can change, because it's been almost a year now and I have such a passion for fitness. I never thought I'd be the person that I am today!

I gained a lot of weight when my partner cheated on me. I turned to food to feel better about myself. I used food as a means of reward to feel better. Couple that with a relatively sedentary lifestyle and you've got a perfect recipe for weight gain!

PS: What drew you to weightlifting specifically?

KV: I started lifting weights because cardio always left me feeling drained. So I tried weightlifting! I was fortunate enough to have a good friend show me how to do deadlifts and squats, and that's all I did for months. Slowly I started branching out and trying new things.

"Once you trust yourself and have faith in your own abilities, then everything will fall into place!"

I have had this idea that I needed to diet or work out since I was 12 years old. That's more than half of my life! I kept thinking to myself that I'll dedicate my time to it later. After next semester. After the Summer. After I get my bachelor's degree. Little did I realize that I was just putting off my efforts for years. I've tried swimming, DVD programs, and plain old cardio. None of them worked because I wasn't ready for the lifestyle change, nor did I believe in myself. I've learned that just having the belief that you can change is oftentimes the biggest barrier to achieving your goals. Once you trust yourself and have faith in your own abilities, then everything will fall into place!

I think another huge thing is that I always got so stressed about making immediate lifestyle changes. I wouldn't just start working out; I would try to go vegan and start home-cooking and meal prepping and start working out all at the same time. I know now that those extreme changes are not helpful. It really does take baby steps when it comes to making lifestyle changes!

PS: What's your favorite way to work out?

KV: I am beyond passionate about lifting weights! It's such a fun and challenging way to achieve your fitness goals! Lifting has boosted my confidence more than I thought possible. I really love when I can work out with friends who help push me to try harder and lift heavier. Oftentimes that's enough for me to beat a personal record!

PS: What's your weekly exercise schedule?

KV: When I first started, I was working out once a week for about a month or two. Then I started feeling so good every time after I worked out. So I started going two to three times a week for a few more months. After that, I really started noticing my progress and was feeling so good about myself so I started going almost every day. For the last five months, I literally go six times a week. It's not a chore or a punishment for me; it is my passion. I feel so blessed to have discovered weightlifting! It makes you feel so capable and strong and those feelings fuel my passion!

It took me just under a year, but I went from just doing a 10-minute cardio warmup followed by deadlifts and squats every day to hitting every muscle group each week!

Kaitlyn: After

PS: How do you keep workouts exciting?

KV: Work out with friends! Take lots of before and after photos and enjoy your progress! Listen to your new favorite song only when you're working out (my mom told me this one and trust me, it works!). I have made so many friends at my gym, and being naturally outgoing, it helps when I get to work out with them.

PS: How much weight have you lost?

KV: I've lost 78 pounds! The first 25 pounds I lost were just from getting off of birth control, but the rest was all from weightlifting! I went from 225 at my heaviest recorded weight (but I can almost guarantee I was heavier; I just avoided the scale!) to 148 pounds right now.

PS: What was the first big difference, other than the number on the scale, that really made you feel proud and excited?

KV: Being able to fit into clothes that I never thought I'd fit into again. It's a surreal feeling. I vividly recall trying on a dress again that hadn't fit in years and finding that it was way too big. I was drowning in it. And I just looked at myself in the mirror and broke down in tears. I was so damn proud of myself; never did I imagine I would ever lose weight and get healthier. I never believed in myself until that moment. That was a very cathartic moment for me!

PS: How do you track your weight loss?

KV: I used MyFitnessPal to track my food and my weight. Although, when I started working out, I didn't adjust my diet at all and was still eating out a lot, so I didn't always track my food because I felt guilty. And weirdly enough I use Instagram a LOT to track my progress. I post a lot of before and after photos and the support I receive on there is a phenomenal source of extra motivation for me!

PS: What's a typical day of meals and snacks?

KV: I have been eating Oats Overnight, which is a prepackaged high-protein oatmeal, every morning for breakfast (I found them through Instagram!), and I usually eat chicken breast and frozen veggies for lunch. I don't always have time to grill up the chicken myself, so I get the rotisserie chickens or roast turkey breast from Safeway or Costco! Then I'll have Chipotle or a homemade acai bowl for dinner after a good workout session!

I snack on corn thins and rice cakes a lot at work. I like to mindlessly snack when I'm writing code and working on software and they're pretty guilt-free and super filling! I also like to snack on protein granola from Sprouts or fresh blueberries.

PS: Do you count calories?

KV: I do on occasion. I used to do it religiously, but after six to seven months of tracking, I've gotten a pretty good idea about what I'm putting in my body. I eat intuitively now and don't feel as stressed when it comes to tracking my calories. It's easy to get caught up in trying to eat as little as possible, but it's just not worth it. I'm probably sitting at around 1,800 calories a day, but I eat pretty clean, so it's a lot of protein!

Kaitlyn: Before and After

PS: What are the healthy staples that are always in your fridge?

KV: Almond milk and blueberries! As far as nonfridge items go, I always have frozen acai purée in my freezer and bananas and granola on my counter. Also, I don't think I could survive without my peanut butter powder at this point. I put it in every shake I make!

PS: How do you strategize for meals out?

KV: I don't anymore! I don't crave fast food, so when I do go out I just listen to my body. I used to eat until I was so full that I felt ill and bloated. I don't do that anymore; instead I like to actually enjoy the food I'm eating! The nice thing about weightlifting is that if you eat more food, it just means you're fueling your body more!

"I just looked at myself in the mirror and broke down in tears. I was so damn proud of myself."

PS: Do you use a fitness tracker?

KV: I use a Fitbit Charge HR 2. It helps me keep track of my heart rate, which I love when I'm working out!

PS: What role did weightlifting play in your journey? Would you recommend it?

KV: I literally recommend weightlifting to all my friends! Just for the fact that it makes you feel so great about yourself!

PS: What advice do you have for anyone starting out on a weight-loss journey?

KV: Please let yourself celebrate the little victories, like ordering a medium instead of a large meal at a fast-food restaurant! It's such a slow process, but it is absolutely worth it! Find something physical that you love and let yourself develop a passion for it. Let it become more than a temporary thing to lose weight. If you can find something that can be a lifelong hobby, then you're going to go so far!

This Kettlebell Workout Will Burn a Ridiculous Amount of Calories

Get ready, because this five-move kettlebell workout will torch tons of calories. The workout, created by KettleWorx director of programming Laura Wilson, features basic kettlebell moves that should be in anyone's strength-training repertoire.

When learning these exercises, it's important to start with a light weight first - Laura recommends a five- or 10-pound kettlebell. You can increase the amount of repetitions as you become stronger, but first focus on your form and only increase the weight after you can do 20 reps of these moves correctly with a lighter weight. Once you've hit 20 reps, increase the weight but bring your repetitions back down to 10 until you've acclimated to the heavier weight. "It's about pacing yourself and listening to your body; it will tell you what's right," Laura says.

Repeat the following five-move circuit three times in order to work your entire body and keep your heart rate up. Click through to see Laura in action and learn how to do the workout!

Why This Photo of a Mom Who Survived the Las Vegas Shooting Is Going Viral

In the wake of the horrible tragedy that took place in Las Vegas this weekend, people are flocking to social media to recognize the survivors and heroes who did everything they could to help others when they needed it most. Lauren Harkins shared an emotional photo on Facebook of her cousin's fiancée, Summer Clyburn, a 22-year-old mother who took a bullet to save her partner.

"If this isn't the definition of a strong woman then [I don't know] what is. Took a bullet to the back by a rifle to save someone else's life and is still going strong for her baby and love of her life," Harkins wrote.

Clyburn rushed to Michael Gracia's side after he was shot in the left temple. While Clyburn was trying to wrap a flannel shirt around his wound, she was shot in the back. Thankfully, Gracia, who's a police officer, has woken up from surgery and is able to walk. And although Clyburn's wound wasn't immediately life-threatening, the bullet shattered inside her and isn't able to be removed.

Harkins had a final message for her heroes: "I admire you more than you'll ever know and I am so grateful for you and your love for [Gracia]. I love you guys and will ALWAYS be by your sides."

The 7 Trendiest Fragrances Everyone Will Be Wearing This Fall

It's officially time to haul your booties out from under the bed, drop off your favorite coat at the dry cleaner, wrap yourself up in a cozy scarf, and pick out a new fragrance to wear all season long. That's why we enlisted the help of perfume gurus to detail the top Fall fragrance trends and dish on fresh launches to help you narrow down your (many) choices.

"Traditionally, Fall is a time when we want darker, woodsier, patchouli scents, reminding us of gatherings around the crackling fireplace, sipping brandy or mulled wine, and crisp mornings with glorious colors of foliage," said Sue Phillips, a fragrance trend forecaster.

It's true that scents tend to lean warmer in the colder months, but this isn't a roundup of the same old stuff you see year after year. Both indie and mass perfumers have become increasingly clever and experimental with their scents, and the trends outlined ahead are proof of that.

Say It Ain't So! Disneyland Nixes Jingle Cruise - Possibly For Good

It's sad, but true! Disneyland just confirmed that the Jungle Cruise ride won't be transformed into the Jingle Cruise this year for the holidays. The Christmas-themed overlay, which had been a staple at Adventureland for the past four years, won't be returning to the park this year, though it will still be in place at Walt Disney World, according to Travel + Leisure.

The holiday-themed additions included decorations that were scattered through the attraction, as well as subtle hints of the Christmas season in each tour guide's spiel.

But cheer up, Disneyland fans: The California park will still give the Haunted Mansion a Nightmare Before Christmas theme, as well as turning It's a Small World into a Christmas joy ride. The parks' evening shows will also still have a holiday theme, just like every year. Disneyland hasn't officially confirmed whether or not the Jingle Cruise will return to the park in the future, but we're hoping it will!

10 Things That Happened on Halloween If You Grew Up Latinx

As a kid, your Latinx parents' strictness probably came out tenfold during Halloween. We were allowed to dress up, but only as whatever our moms wanted us to go as (or in whatever hand-me-down costume we got from older cousins). We were allowed to eat some candy, but never baked goods and never (ever!) too much of anything. We could hear family members' scary ghost stories, but forget about having a sleepover to watch horror films.

If your childhood Halloween was like ours, then read ahead for 10 things you definitely experienced on October 31 in years past.

7 Shower Oils That Will Make You Rethink That Old Bar of Soap

If you experience dry skin during colder weather, right now is the perfect time to pamper yourself. One of our favorite ways to get that spa-like experience every day is by using relaxing shower products. If you haven't tried using a shower oil yet, here are a few reasons you should: unlike soaps and gels, oils have a richer, more nutrient-based texture that is easy to wash off, they smell amazing, and they are less likely to strip your skin of its natural moisture. So if you're thinking of trying one, we'll make it easy and do the shopping for you. Take a look at our favorites that will make your skin feel softer than ever this season.

The Internet Can't Handle This Kickstarter Campaign That Basically Reinvented the Tent

Every few months, there's a new product that leaves us scratching our heads and wondering where society is headed. This time around, it's the Pause Pod, a new invention that touts itself as a "private pop up space" but is really just a small tent. The Pause Pod was fully funded on Kickstarter in May and will start shipping out this Winter.

According to its founders, the Pause Pod was "inspired by the blanket forts we used to build growing up" and is meant for a variety of needs like meditating, taking a power nap, or just acting as a place to read. While some people would like to do these things in the comfort of their own home and beds, the Pause Pod is there for people who need to do it anywhere. Each Pause Pod comes with a carrying bag, a reading light, stakes to use it outdoors (sound familiar?), and a ceiling that's ready for "add-ons" like a "star sky" that shows you the stars or a "pod cinema," which is just a mount for a tablet.

Basically, this product is great for anyone who is sick of every corner of their own home and looking for an additional place to hide from the world and do everything they'd normally do – just in a new space. And for anyone who is seriously considering getting this to nap wherever they feel like it, don't worry - it comes with a foldable leg compartment, so you can lie down in it, too.

After reading about the Pause Pod, it's likely that you'll be confused as to whether or not someone actually tried to reinvent the tent. Please watch the GIF ahead and decide for yourself.

Needless to say, the internet did not take too kindly to this "groundbreaking" concept and called the Pause Pod what it really is: a tent.

If you're interested, you can order a single Pause Pod now on Indiegogo for $100. But if you're already going to spend this much money, just do yourself a favor and get yourself a tent - or invest in a more comfortable bed and couch.

This 6-Month-Old Can Probably Do More Push-Ups Than You Can

The Top 10 Fall Foods For Weight Loss

When it comes to weight loss, diet plays a bigger role than you might imagine. Instead of relying on processed low-calorie foods that don't satisfy your appetite - or taste buds - let these seasonal (delicious) eats support your goals. Load up on these healthy foods the next time you're at the grocery store or farmers market and start seeing results.

The 1 Thing I Learned in Italy That Changed the Way I Cook

I thought I knew how to cook Italian food . . . until I went to Italy. I got the amazing opportunity to travel to Tuscany to stay at Casa Buitoni, home of Buitoni, the fresh-pasta brand you've likely seen in the refrigerated section at the grocery store. I was in good company with chefs who develop authentic recipes for the nearly 200-year-old brand (it was founded by the Buitoni family in 1827), so I think they know a thing or two about Italian food. After a week of making pasta from scratch, visiting wineries and restaurants among the rolling hills of Tuscany, and eating too many incredible meals to count made by chefs born and raised in Italy, I learned an invaluable lesson that really stuck with me and will change the way I cook for myself from now on.

Simplicity is key, and less is more.

The mentality that surrounds food in Italy is unlike everything typical about food in the US. Italians eat slowly. They savor every single bite and every single moment at the table - "family style" means more than just passing around a plate of food for everyone to try. A young woman who grew up in Italy told me her family never served a meal without setting the table, complete with a white tablecloth. And yes, of course I realize that setting up a gorgeous tablescape with a movie-worthy view is not something most people have the privilege of re-creating at home, but what we can (and should) copy is the overall idea. Eating is a time to unplug from the rest of the world and to connect with the food and the people right in front of you.

And most importantly, authentic Italian cooks let the ingredients shine. If you start with the best quality ingredients you can find, you only need a few to make an amazing dish. I'll be the first to admit that using restraint in the kitchen is not my strong suit. My favorite pasta recipes often involve a long list of ingredients (spaghetti with garlic, white wine, thyme, lemon, and more, for example), but now I realize that there is such a thing as too much, and you don't always need 20 ingredients to make the most flavorful dish.

The best thing you can do is start out with really, really good olive oil. Spend the money on that fancier bottle - it's 100 percent worth it. Because, as I learned, olive oil is just as much an ingredient as pasta or parmesan cheese. When you simply use olive oil to sauté vegetables or throw in a tablespoon to prevent your pasta from sticking before adding other ingredients, the pure flavor gets lost in translation. The rich flavor of homemade olive oil is unlike anything else, and it's truly at the heart of Italian cooking - let it be the star.

Use good salt and fresh garlic. Invest in the freshest seasonal vegetables when you can. And, most importantly, take the time to savor every single bite. I thought this pizza topped with merely tomato sauce and a thin slice of roasted garlic would be boring, but I could not have been more wrong. After one bite, I realized it embodied everything Italian food is about: freshness, simplicity, and flavor. And that's what I'm going to aim to re-create in my own home.

Yikes! Experts Are Warning Against Drinking Moscow Mules in Copper Mugs

I'll be the first to admit that moscow mules are my favorite drink of choice

during social gatherings. With that being said, it was hard not to be concerned when I read the recent reports that drinking the spicy citrus drink out of thos

gorgeous copper mugs might not be the safest option. Experts over at the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division are warning against drinking alcoholic beverages from copper mugs because "high concentrations of copper are poisonous and have caused foodborne illness."

Due to the potential health concerns, the use of copper products in conjunction with food and drinks is limited in the state of Iowa. The good news is, almost all copper mugs on sale today, including this Moscow Mule Copper Mug ($20) from Sur La Table, have stainless steel or nickle lining. According to the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division, copper mugs "lined on the interior with another metal" are safe enough for consumers to drink from.

So the next time you order a moscow mule, you can likely breathe a sigh of relief knowing that you're most likely not consuming any copper materials mixed in with your drink that could lead to a potentially dangerous health hazard. We can all cheers to that!

Warning: This Workout Will Wake Up Muscles You Didn't Know Existed

If you love a challenge and are always looking for new ways to work out, you're going to be a huge fan of AMRAP workouts. AMRAPs, short for "as many reps as possible," are timed workouts where you race against the clock to get in as many reps of a set of exercises as possible.

"When doing AMRAPs, you get to go at your own pace and really focus on technique, which allows more control over every movement," said Austin Lopez, CSCS and founder of Ausome Fit. "Because of this, you're often doing better work than you might in a high-intensity workout, where form is often sacrificed for speed." But, as you do build up your technique and form, you can challenge yourself to increase the total number of reps you complete in each round and will find yourself totally out of breath as you would during any intense HIIT session.

Ready to give it a go? Lopez grouped these moves together - jump squats, push-ups, and burpees - because they work the entire body, which helps you maximize every second spent in the workout.

The Workout

Perform each move for 30 seconds, completing as many reps as possible. After completing the third and final move in the circuit, rest for 45 seconds before beginning again. Run through the circuit a total of four times.

The 7 Exercises Everyone Should Know

As a fitness editor, I have done my fair share of workouts. Videos, classes, personal training - you name it, I've probably done it. In all of the workouts I have done, the same seven exercises appear again and again, and for good reason. Not only do these moves tend to form the foundation of more challenging variations, but they are also incredibly functional and work major muscle groups of the body.

If you're new to fitness or are just looking for a refresher, it's a good idea to get acquainted with the following exercises. Doing so will help give you the foundation to excel at more complicated moves, while also providing you the health benefits from focusing on exercises that are truly useful in everyday life. Best of all? You won't need a single piece of equipment to do a single one.

How to Decide If You Should Pierce Your Kid's Ears

Ear piercing: the long-debated topic of any parent to little girls. Do you get it over with within her first few months? Or wait until she's old enough to make the decision for herself? Whether you're for getting it done as soon as possible or think it's an antiquated gender norm, here are some things to consider.

1. It's pretty painful.

Of course, it's no surprise that getting shot in the ear with a needle hurts, but is that even more of a reason to get it over with sooner rather than later? While many moms tend to agree that causing their baby pain isn't on their to-do list, others struggle with their older daughters when they're overwhelmed with pain if they opt to get it done later. After all, no one wants to walk away with just one ear pierced, right? So maybe getting it down when they're too young to remember isn't the worst idea in the world.

2. There's a slim chance anything will actually go wrong.

Whether you're kid's 2 months or 12 years old, doctors agree that the risk involved is extremely limited, regardless of age. Though sometimes it's common practice to do it early - especially in Spanish and Italian cultures - there are some small risks moms should be aware of. The biggest issue that could crop up is an infection aka when the area becomes painful or tender or itches or swells. This is most likely to happen if you get her ears pierced over the Summer or if she's constantly touching the area (ahem, babies touch everything!). Getting her pierced could also lead to an allergic reaction or keloids (raised bumps that appear close to the earring).

If you're planning on getting her ears done at a young age, keep in mind that earrings are a choking hazard, so be extra vigilant about what she puts in her mouth.

3. Doctors recommend you wait at least for a little while.

Although some new moms want their daughter's ears pierced in time for their first Instagram, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggests holding off until they're able to take care of the piercings themselves. If you simply can't wait, doctors recommend getting pierced with gold posts to decrease the likelihood of infection and cleaning the area with rubbing alcohol daily for four to six weeks.

4. Be prepared to answer questions.

If you decide to get their ears pierced while they're infants, expect more than a few questions on the matter from fellow moms. People tend to have strong feelings about piercings in general, so don't be surprised if you get asked about the thought process behind your decision on the playground.

The bottom line? Getting your child's ears pierced is a personal choice. As long as you have it done by a trained professional and follow the cleaning guidelines, the risk will be minimal.

I Waited 2 Years, but Finally Got My Daughter's Name Tattooed on My Wrist

Never in my life did I ever think I'd get a tattoo. I've always been a "good" girl; never smoked a cigarette, never did psychedelic drugs, and I didn't even lose my virginity until I was 24 (for real)! But something happened after three days of labor, when I finally got to hold my newborn daughter Sadie in my arms, and see her wide, curious eyes staring sweetly up at mine. I knew I wanted to do something to honor the incredible love I had for her.

The tattoo with Sadie and Reuben in the background

When she was 5 months old, Sadie got sick. She started having seizures where she'd stop breathing and turn blue. In and out of hospitals for three weeks, I watched her almost die right in front of me. My love for her was so overwhelming, and I was grateful for every moment I had with her because I wasn't sure if it'd be the last. That changed me forever, and once she got better, around age 4, I had the urge to have a permanent reminder of how much I loved her, and how much she was a part of me.

That was almost two years ago, when I decided I wanted to get her name tattooed on my wrist in her handwriting. I chose my right wrist because I wanted to see it every day, and I'm a righty, so I knew anytime I'd reach for something, I'd see it. I knew I'd see it in certain yoga poses, when I was out running, or lifting weights. I kept putting it off, nervous to go through with it, but at age 6, she would be going to kindergarten in the Fall and I thought this would be a really special time to have it done, as a sort of rite of passage. When my son goes off to kindergarten in two years (and he, too, can legibly write his name) I'll get his name tattooed underneath Sadie's.

I told Sadie my idea and said I needed her to write her name for me. She did it like 60 times, and when I saw the one I knew I wanted, I finally got up the nerve to do it. I asked a few friends for a tattoo artist recommendation, and set up a meeting with a guy who owned a tattoo shop, conveniently down the street. He said to come at 7:30, no earlier, and that it'd take 15 minutes. It was actually date night for me and my husband, and I thought it'd be a romantic thing to have him come and be part of this.

Joe giving me the tattoo, and Sadie photographing!

When we walked in (this was my first time ever in a tattoo parlor!), the guy was tattooing a woman, with two friends sitting next to her, and she was understandably looking a little annoyed. The guy started talking to me, still tattooing away on this woman's arm, and asked, "So what do you want?" I said, "Just my daughter's name in her handwriting on my wrist." Still tattooing, not really looking at me, he said, "Well here's the thing. I charge $150 for an hour, so maybe you should think of something else to do because that will only take 15 minutes."

My husband, Mike, got a bad vibe from him and was subtly trying to get me the heck out of there by saying, "Yeah, maybe we should go home and see if Devon (my 4-year-old) can write his name." The guy was like, "Want to do it tomorrow?" I was about to say sure - I mean it was her handwriting, it didn't take any creative flare whatsoever, and he came recommended from two people I knew. Mike stopped me, saying "Oh no, remember we might go on Ben's boat tomorrow." Man I was NOT picking up on his hints because I wanted that tattoo so bad. The guy dismissed us with, "How about you call me tomorrow."

So we left and I was so pissed. But Mike was like, "He didn't even stop to look at your design. He didn't even stop to talk to you. You know this is permanent, like for FOREVER?" He was right. When we got home, we talked to our babysitter, who had just gotten a tattoo a few months ago at a different tattoo shop and had a wonderful experience.

Finally done, a little red, and smeared with Aquaphor for protection

We happened to be going into town for dinner where our babysitter's recommended shop was, so I emailed the new place, and the guy, Joe, said to come in anytime. I showed up with my husband and two kids, for what I thought was just going to be a consultation. He sat with me, the sweetest older gentleman, arms covered in gorgeous tattoos, and he saw the little paper with Sadie's name and said, "Aww, this is a sweet idea." He shrunk it down to about an inch long, and laid it on my wrist. I started to tear up because it was starting to seem more real. "When do you want to do it?" he asked. I said, "I don't know." He said, "How about now?" I looked at Mike to see what he thought and he said, "Let's do it!"

It was such an amazing experience, in a very clean and professional place. He only charged me $50 and with a $25 tip - half the price the other guy was going to charge. I love that my whole family was there with me, and it didn't hurt at all. Really. I mean I've been through two natural childbirths and this was nothing! It only took 10 minutes, and afterward, I teared up a little and hugged the guy. The kids were so good, and Sadie even documented it with my phone. Then they each got to pick out a temporary glittery tattoo - really cute.

I am so happy I finally did it, and now my other mommy friends have said they want one, too. It serves as a reminder not only of the love I have for Sadie and Devon, but equally importantly, it reminds me to be grateful for all I have and to celebrate what's really important in life.

4 Simple Lessons I Learned From My Dad That Have Made Me a Stronger Woman

There's no denying the power and influence moms have on their daughters' upbringing and transformation into young women. My younger sister and I were raised in a two-parent household with a very authoritative, strong mom to whom I attribute many of the lifelong lessons I've learned. But, luckily for us, my dad was there alongside my mother to coach and mentor us during our most crucial teen and adult years.

While maternal figures are commonly associated with enforcing certain values in young girls, dads do it, too. I know because I've experienced this firsthand. I believe that the support received from dads is equally important in the upbringing of strong, independent women.

My dad and I may not share the same gender, but many of the unexpected little things I've learned specifically from him have impacted my continuous growth into a woman. Here are a few of them.

1. The drive to go after what you want.

Although my father has the least aggressive personality in my household, it doesn't mean that he doesn't enforce the importance of being aggressive when it comes to achieving my educational and career goals. I am a first-generation college graduate, and my dad has opened his mind up to learning the American college system to coach me through the application process. He's scoped out internships and companies of interest and always assures me that I am completely capable of achieving my goals. My father has always been a supportive voice of reason for all of my career and educational decisions and still remains so to this day.

2. The importance of taking care of yourself.

Being the only male in a house full of women will also make you no stranger to women's health and feminine care, but these topics have never been too taboo to bring up around my dad. My dad has never tiptoed around talking to me and my sister about our physical or mental health. Feeling depressed? I can tell my dad. Stomach cramps got me down? I can talk to him. Being able to remain open with my father on things that would make most men uncomfortable has molded how I view my male counterpart's views and reactions to women's health.

3. Traditional gender roles are a thing of the past.

At a glance, my dad is your "average macho man." I typically associate all handiwork with him, and although he is a great handyman, he has never been opposed to doing things or teaching my sister and me things that aren't typical for our gender. My dad has (terribly) styled my hair, gone for pedicures with my mom, cooked dinner after work, cleaned, and done laundry . . . just like my mom. He has also held a job in a female-dominant company for more than 15 years, and he has formed respectable professional relationships with his female superiors - and has never questioned their intelligence or power. There has also never been a such thing as a "woman's job" in my household. Except for when there's been a really tight jar of pasta sauce to uncap . . . he's a pro at that.

4. To be who you are at all times.

My mom and dad are quite the opposites: my father is more reserved and my mom is more outspoken. Watching my father interact with my mom and genuinely let her be who she is for 20-plus years of marriage has set a great example for me. This has shown me that women do not need to be timid or silenced in their everyday lives. In fact, my dad has embraced that he lives with three very unique (and sometimes overwhelming) ladies, but he encourages us to fearlessly express ourselves because we are human and it is totally OK to be who you are.

Warning! Your Kids Are Going to Lose Their Sh*t Over the New Hatchimals

Surprise! Hatchimals, the hot toy of the 2016 holiday season from Spin Master, is back at it again with a brand-new iteration of the trendy egg toy, called Hatchimals Surprise. However, unlike Spin Master's release earlier this year, Hatchimals Glittering Garden, this new version of the popular toy has an awesome twist: twins!

That's right, for just $70 (a $10 increase from the original, single Hatchimal), your child will hatch two creatures out of the same egg (either identical or fraternal twins) who can communicate and interact with each other, as well as with your child. However, these twins won't look anything like the Pengulas and Owlcorns your child hatched last year - Hatchimals Surprise eggs will hatch two adorable brand-new species: Peacats and Giravens (plus a few exclusive species available at various retailers).

The first creature that hatches from the egg will be the chatty twin, who can repeat phrases your child says to it, while its younger twin sibling is the dancing Hatchimal who puts a little boogie into everything and plays games with your child. Face the pair together, and they'll have dance parties, giggle at each other, play games, and react to each other in different ways based on whether your child pushes their heads down or touches their noses. Just like the original Hatchimals toys, the creatures will grow from baby to toddler to kid, learning new abilities and games along the way.

The best news for parents? Unlike last year, you won't have to worry about your antsy kiddo freaking out over a long hatch time - Hatchimals Surprise eggs will begin to reveal the creature inside as early as seven minutes from initiating the hatch.

"We saw millions of successful hatches around the world last year, delivering a magical hatching experience for kids and their families," said James Martin, senior vice president, robotics at Spin Master. "With the launch of Hatchimals Surprise, we are delivering everything the original Hatchimals did and more. The early response has been incredible, and we're excited to celebrate our second annual Hatchimals Day."

The bigger, better egg will be available for purchase in stores and online on Hatchimals Day, Oct. 6 - and every kid is going to want to get their little hands on one two.

9 Creepy-Crawly Spider Makeup Looks, Because It's Finally October, Witches

It's finally October, which means, in the immortal words of Missy Elliott, it's time to get your freak on. As beauty junkies are well aware, there are so many ways to do the most this Halloween.

When we saw the photo above of spider lip art that was so lifelike, it almost made us call an exterminator. The look, which was first spotted by Yahoo Beauty, got our minds wondering: how many other creepy-crawly ways are people channeling insects for Oct. 31? As it turns out, so many makeup enthusiasts are turning to our many-legged friends (or foes, depending on how squeamish you are) for beauty inspiration. And no, this isn't the cute monarch butterfly kind you're used to seeing.

Although discovering a spider or cockroach crawling around would turn us into a hot mess IRL, seeing fake bugs on the faces of these Instagrammers brings us nothing but sheer delight. Ahead, why don't you celebrate the beginning of the best month of the year with some hair-raising makeup looks that just might make you rethink your pretty princess costume.

Edible Cookie Dough Bars Exist, So We Want 50 Cases, Please

Stop it, world! We can't take it! We can only handle so much amazing cookie dough news in one year, and we thought we'd already hit the threshold with edible Oreo cookie dough. When The Junk Food Aisle discovered edible cookie dough in bar form, it seemed too good to be true - but we've done our research, and it's all real, baby!

These delectable little miracles come courtesy of Soozie's Doozies, which offers five flavors of edible cookie dough bar: Peanut Butter Milk Chocolate, White Chocolate Peanut Butter Macadamia, Birthday Cake, Candie-Coated Chocolate, and Chocolate Chip. While The Junk Food Aisle found the bars at Midwest grocery chain Meijer for $2 each, the Soozie's Doozies brand is also carried at stores like Whole Foods, Ralph's, Kroger, and Food 4 Less (check out the store locator). Read up on the different flavors here, then look out for the dough bars on shelves near you!

Storybook Cosmetics Is FINALLY Releasing Black Rose Makeup Brushes, and Oh Mylanta

Set your alarms, mark your calendars, and most importantly, grab your wallets, because the time has FINALLY come. After many (agonizing) months of teasers, Storybook Cosmetics is releasing its highly anticipated black rose makeup brushes! [Insert squeals and maybe even a few happy tears here.]

To refresh your memory, Storybook Cosmetics released the dreamiest makeup brushes that looked just like the enchanted rose from Beauty and the Beast right around the time of the movie's premiere earlier this year. And now that Halloween is approaching, the brand decided it was the perfect time to release a darker, spookier version of the original ones (which are still available online, BTW!). These new brushes are all black except for the crimson-red bristle ends, making for an edgy beauty accessory that even yellow-dress-donning Belle would totally splurge on.

Now, we don't have too many official details about these beauties yet, as Storybook Cosmetics announced the release with a short and sweet caption: "October 10th! LIMITED EDITION." The company has been teasing them on Instagram since the Summer, with each post sending makeup mavens into a full-on frenzy. The teasers made it look like the brushes would have a matte black finish, but it somewhat looks like the final design has a bit of a shinier finish. If they're anything like the original rose brushes, they'll come in a set of four (including a tapered highlighting brush, angled contour brush, flat-top powder brush, and dome-top powder brush) and will likely be around the same price ($55 for the whole "bouquet").

It's unclear how long these limited-edition beauties will be available for purchase, but we're predicting a quick sellout. Memorize those credit card numbers, set storybookcosmetics.com as your homepage, and prepare for Oct. 10, fellow goth queens. In the meantime, check out the teasers ahead for an up-close look at these gloriously edgy makeup brushes.

The Photo That Is Helping Women Detect Breast Cancer

Earlier this week, many Facebook users were posting red hearts in support of breast cancer awareness, but one woman is opening up about why a "cute heart" isn't going to help save lives. Erin Smith Chieze posted the photo above on Facebook, giving an explicit description of how breast cancer can look and feel, and it's going viral for all the right reasons. In response to all the red hearts Erin has seen on Facebook, she explained the importance of these lemons.

"In December of 2015 when I saw an indentation that looked like one of those pictures, I instantly knew I had breast cancer," she wrote. "I tried to feel for a tumor, but my tumor was non palpable. I was diagnosed with breast cancer 5 days later and with stage 4 the following month. A heart did nothing for awareness. I knew what breast cancer was. I knew all about self exams, but a picture of what to look for keyed me into knowing I had a terminal disease."

She continued, "We need to give REAL information, not cute hearts. Without having seen a picture randomly with real information, I wouldn't have known what to look for. Do us a favor, stop playing games with my life and start truly helping people. Metastatic breast cancer treatment research and real awareness."

After feeling frustrated by the red hearts on Facebook, Erin decided to take matters into her own hands and post her touching story in an effort to help save lives the way a similar photo helped her. This image is part of the Know Your Lemons campaign started by the Worldwide Breast Cancer organization. It's an incredibly informative graphic that both men and women should use for self-exams.

"PLEASE, stop playing games that do not actually promote awareness, they often cause people to tune out anything that might even mention the word awareness," Erin wrote. "So if you truly want to help people WITH cancer, or those who will GET cancer, share photos like this one."

This Common Bedroom Item Can Cause Babies to Suffocate in Their Sleep

The very item you bought to keep your babies safe could actually put them at a greater risk of suffocating in their sleep, according to a warning the Food and Drug Administration released on Oct. 3. Sleep positioner pillows - which were created to make sure babies don't roll over into a dangerous position while snoozing - have actually been found to cause babies to sleep face down and suffocate.

Health officials at the FDA have advised parents to stop using sleep positioners altogether after several cases were reported of babies being put down on their backs and sides, only to be found sleeping in a life-threatening position a few hours later.

And this isn't the first warning that's been issued regarding sleep positioner pillows. The FDA released a statement back in 2010 urging parents to stop using the product immediately after 12 infants died while using the pillow. Additionally, in order to best prevent sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS, it is recommended that a baby sleeps without any extra products, including pillows, blankets, or plush toys.

Take a Tour of Flip or Flop Star Tarek El Moussa's Bachelor Pad

Tarek and Christina El Moussa have been separated for more than a year now, and during that time, Tarek has used his finely honed real estate skills to design his own abode. The Flip or Flop star invited E! News inside his Newport Beach area bachelor pad. With its whitewashed walls and high ceilings, the airy open-concept home exudes welcoming seaside vibes. And, Tarek says, is the perfect maze for his two young kids to play in.

Wide plank wood floors run throughout, and farmhouse touches add cozy warmth in the form of crossed wood planks, stair banisters, and molding on the kitchen island. Upstairs, 6-year-old daughter Taylor's room boasts not one but two bunk beds - although Tarek says she usually ends up in bed with daddy. Next door is 1-year-old son Brayden's gray-and-white-themed nursery, complete with a plush glider in which Tarek rocks him to sleep at night.

The master bedroom boasts vaulted ceilings with exposed beams. A flat-screen TV is mounted above a fireplace, and a rustic chandelier hangs above the contemporary canopy bed. And did we mention the views? You can see the water from the upper deck in the charming abode, and we're guessing he keeps his boat - which, he jokes, he just renamed from "Flip or Flop" to "Bad Decisions" - in the nearby marina.

Perhaps the most surprising and heart-warming part of the house tour, however, is when Tarek reveals that he and Christina still check in on each other and "still deep down care about each other." Check out every inch of Tarek's stylish home in the video above.

Miley Cyrus Morphs Into Godmother Dolly Parton With This "Islands in the Stream" Cover

Dolly Parton, is that you? While appearing on The Tonight Show on Wednesday, Miley Cyrus morphed into her iconic godmother with a cover of "Islands in the Stream." Cyrus was joined by host Jimmy Fallon for the duet, and both went all the way to ensure their performance was a pitch-perfect re-creation of Parton's 1983 Grammy performance with Kenny Rogers (and by that we mean some incredible '80s-era wigs). It was the perfect follow up to Cyrus's touching tribute to the Las Vegas shooting victims, which she performed with Adam Sandler on Monday.

If You Experience Hormonal Breakouts, You'll Thank God For This Mask

I've yet to find a woman who hasn't encountered this issue: you're about to embark on that time of the month, and your skin appears to be mirroring just how annoyed, inflamed, and pissed off you feel on the inside. (If you haven't, please DM me immediately so I can paint a full picture.) But I've found something that has helped my skin during this monthly visit - premenstrual, if you will - and it doesn't require removing my uterus. Yay! In fact, it's a face mask, and it's going to be something you will wish they sold at Costco. Someone just get me a giant vat of this stuff.

The mask comes from Renée Rouleau, Demi Lovato's go-to esthetician and Texas native. She has helped me with two major skin care woes in my life, issues that have plagued me. First, she is the one who identified that I had melasma when I was 25. Mid-20s me thought the dark spots on my forehead and cheeks, which could appear to be shadows to the naked eye, were remnants of my self-tanner that I wasn't able to wash off. (To be young and naive.) It was during a facial at her Dallas location that she gently brought up that I had melasma and informed me of what triggered it: my birth control.

This changed my life. Seriously. I got off birth control, something I was able to do without worry at the time. I stopped upsetting my melanocytes - the cells that produce melanin, or pigment, in the skin - with heated, aggressive treatments. (For the most part.) I wore a hat to the beach and aspired to stay out of the heat in general, knowing the temperature could set my melasma off. And although there's a little bit on my forehead, it's less noticeable than it once was.

Then, a few years later, I had a breakout after leaving the Coachella Valley. God help me. My cheeks were ridden with red bumps and pustules, something I knew wasn't normal, and I realized they recurred each time I left Palm Springs. My (since dropped) dermatologist was quick to prescribe me pills to kill whatever it was, but wanting actual answers, I wrote Renée, who is now based in Austin. She asked me a variety of questions about my weekend that helped her pinpoint what I was experiencing: acne cosmetica. Spending long days in the dry climate with heavy winds and an oil-based foundation meant my pores were being blocked by my foundation and increased my oil production, resulting in what looks like a breakout. She made an easy suggestion: wear powder foundation on your next trip. And you know what? I haven't had a breakout in the desert since!

Now you know that I trust this woman. She dug deeper than my dermatologist bothered to in order to find the right solution. This is incredibly helpful when you're trying to fix any skin issue you have; it is invaluable.

Visiting Renée over Golden Globes weekend, I got a chance to receive a facial and learn about her new products. First, she told me I needed to "put the fire out of my skin." It was inflamed as hell, and I had several cysts that I hadn't battled with in some time. And truth be told, it kind of comes with the territory when you're testing skin care products regularly, but she reminded me that I must be gentle. She took a minute to give my skin a chill pill in the form of a rubber mask, then introduced me to her newest baby, an anti-breakout solution for hormonal acne that won't dry out your skin: the Rapid Response Detox Masque ($61).

Is it too good to be true? No. It works. I've tested it for a month, and I'm currently wearing the sheerest foundation I own - a compact from Laneige - if that gives you any indication. It works to help with clogged pores that result from travel, hormones, and even sleeping with makeup on. Renée suggests it for premenstrual acne to help "disrupt the acne cycle." This is mask is lightweight and dreamy; when it dries, it doesn't feel hard, sticky, or taut. Renée suggests exfoliating before applying the mask, so lightly scrub or use a peel to help get rid of dead skin. The mask itself is a golden, shimmery gel. Slather it on and let the following eliminate your future breakouts: tea tree leaf oil is antimicrobial and an anti-inflammatory that helps with acne bacteria. Helping to stop inflammation is key when it comes to getting rid of your breakouts, which is why she also included lichocalchone, or Chinese licorice, which helps soothe the skin. Manuka branch/leaf oil helps with the microbial - or bacteria - count on your skin's surface, and she included a salicylic acid complex to help exfoliate and reduce oil.

This mask doesn't include parabens, synthetic fragrances, synthetic dyes, SD alcohol, or gluten, which my skin was thrilled about. I use it once a week, and it's recommended you leave on for about 15 minutes. (I tend to go over since I get distracted and forget I have it on.) Many masks take a few minutes to get off because they leave patches of product behind. This slides off the skin easily and leaves your with a glow afterward.

Investing in your skin, period, is always a good idea, but especially during that time of the month. My skin will take any help it can get!

Jessica Chastain Stars as Hollywood's Infamous "Poker Princess" in Molly's Game

Even when Jessica Chastain is playing a woman indicted for "running the world's most exclusive and decadent man cave," it's impossible not to root for her. Chastain stars in screenwriter Aaron Sorkin's directorial debut, Molly's Game, which is the true story of Molly Bloom. The Olympic-class skier and "Poker Princess" ran high-stakes poker games for high-profile movie stars, athletes, and businessmen (and accidentally the Russian mob, oops) for a decade before she was arrested by the FBI. With the help of criminal defense lawyer Charlie Jaffey (Idris Elba), Molly fights to clear her name without ruining the lives of everyone who ever sat down at her poker tables.

The drama, which is looking like major Oscar bait and already earning rave reviews, also stars Kevin Costner and Michael Cera. Check out the latest trailer above before it hits theaters on Nov. 22.

Why Hashtags Like #TakeAKnee Matter - and Why They're Not Enough

On Sunday, Sept. 24, 2017, #TakeAKnee and #TakeTheKnee appeared on social media more than 4 million times, emerging in response to disparaging remarks from President Donald Trump about Colin Kaepernick, Eric Reid, and other professional athletes choosing to kneel during the National Anthem as a form of peaceful protest. The hashtags were not part of a planned or established campaign, as compared to other impactful online moments like #ALSIceBucketChallenge or #Kony2012. Usage evolved organically, in much the way hashtags were originally intended to: as a way to collate and organize disparate conversations on the same or similar topics.

The power and immediacy of such a commanding online response has once again raised questions about online social activism, sometimes referred to as "hashtag activism" or, reproachfully, "slactivism." Does it do anything? Does it simply make us all feel better? Is it a real driver of change?

These are questions without easy answers. DeRay McKesson, one of the most popular voices using Twitter to pursue racial justice, thinks the answer is yes. In an interview with The Atlantic, he notes that "[Ferguson,] Missouri would have convinced you that [Black Lives Matter protesters] did not exist if it were not for social media." This speaks to a powerful argument for the use of social media for social activism as a way to demonstrate presence, opinion, and volume. Though certainly much of what actually changes the lives of Americans happens behind closed doors in Washington, the fact remains that it is easier for people to represent or respond to your interests if you make those interests known.

Strength in Numbers and Amplified Voices

In the case of #TakeAKnee, consider this: the NFL is a $14 billion dollar business. It has a bottom line. On the evening of Sept. 23, the president of the United States advised this business to take a particular action ("fire" players kneeling during the anthem) in front of a crowd of screaming supporters. Regardless of whether the president has any direct authority in the matter, the pressure applied is nothing to scoff at. When that pressure is immediately countered by 4 million social media posts - many, if not most, generated by consumers of the NFL's product - a clear message is communicated to the league: should you think twice about following this advice, many, many, people are willing to hold you (financially) accountable.

In the same vein, the offline action associated with #TakeAKnee could only be meaningfully executed by professional athletes (though Stevie Wonder and other public figures certainly help the cause.) Those athletes often rely on endorsements and tenuous contract negotiations. So, those 4 million social media posts very likely directly influenced how many players who had not done so previously had the courage to actually take a knee during the games on Sept. 25 and 26, replicating Kaepernick's original real-word action.

DeRay McKesson also notes, in relation to the Black Lives Matter movement, that before social media, "everybody [told] the story of black people in struggle except black people." This highlights another important positive of social activism online: the ability to constantly and consistently correct and control a narrative. As Trump tries to warp the meaning of Kaepernick's protest into disrespect for the American military, flag, and anthem - and the NFL largely tries to sidestep the issue by making the response about how sports unifies our country - social media users pointed over and over again to the original intent of the gesture: a peaceful protest drawing attention to the unrelenting police brutality perpetrated against black men in the United States.

This may not change the minds of those who disagree, but it does act as a reminder to those reached (including the media) that to realistically discuss #TakeAKnee, one must also at least address the issue of racial justice. Thousands of people acting as de facto fact checkers also certainly makes it more difficult to misrepresent the truth - or at least more difficult for boldly false claims to gain widespread traction.

The "Spreadability of Values"

To get academic for a moment, this type of social activism demonstrates the power of what sociologist Henry Jenkins calls the "spreadability of values" in his 2013 book Spreadable Media. Spreadability speaks to the capacity of social media, as a diffuse digital medium, to "[provide] a catalyst for reconceptualizing aspects of culture, [require] the rethinking of social relations, [and reimagine] cultural and political participation." As people share perspectives and commentary on social issues, and that content is retweeted or reposted to larger and larger audiences, the thoughts themselves "[gain] greater resonance in culture, [take] on new meanings, [find] new audiences, [attract] new markets, and [generate] new values." According to Jenkins, and the at least 1,320 other academics who have cited this work, conversations on social media can change the way we think and act in society.

Social activism on social media carries with it the danger of a false sense of participation or impact.

Naturally, there are limitations to this. For one, just because it can change our behavior does not mean it will. For another - as we have seen in the increasing polarization of the 2016 election and its aftermath - people very often build their social media environments into echo chambers of their own beliefs and opinions. If you are only sharing with people who think just like you, what change are you likely to make? This is certainly truer on Facebook than on Twitter, where unless you have a private account, you do not control who reads or interacts with your posts.

In addition, social activism on social media carries with it the danger of a false sense of participation or impact. It should not, under any circumstances, be seen as equivalent to offline, real-world action. It can amplify it, it can comfort those doing it, it can help raise awareness of what is being done - and, as in the case of Black Lives Matter, it can actually be the genesis for tangible, offline action - but it cannot replace it. For those who truly care about racial justice in the United States, posting about #TakeAKnee should be one of a variety of actions taken to advocate for change - alongside things like voting regularly, educating oneself on how structural racism in America takes shape in real ways like mass incarceration, attending demonstrations, lobbying elected officials, and supporting businesses that support marginalized communities.

In such a polarized and tense political climate, informed dialogue may be one of the highest forms of rebellion, on whatever medium it may appear. As long as people do not treat social media activism as all that is required of them, it should absolutely be seen as one instrument among many in the toolbox of an activist.
