The Meaning Behind Day of the Dead Sugar Skulls

Día de los Muertos is a colorful celebration to honor death and those who have passed, but when people ask me to explain the history behind this date, what exactly it entails, and why we remember the dead for a day or two (Nov. 1 and 2) or even an entire week, it gets tricky. There isn't one definition or way of observing Day of the Dead; it all depends on where you're from (what state in Mexico or even country), but I can say that some symbols and traditions run through all festivities.

Take, for example, skulls and skeletons. If there is one thing everyone probably knows about Día de los Muertos, it is that these two symbols are a big part of the day, specifically sugar skulls or "calaveritas de azúcar." If you've ever attended a Día de los Muertos event or seen an ofrenda (or altar), then you might have come across a white molded skull with a person's name written on its forehead and a series of sweets and ribbons decorating the rest. And while now you might be picturing yourself eating a delicious treat, these are not sweets you'd eat in Mexico.

There's meaning behind these molds and why they're made out of sugar. It all dates back to the Spanish conquest. While a tradition of honoring the dead already existed in Mexico at the time, the Spaniards brought about new learnings and customs and with that the idea of molding decorations from ingredients easily available. Sugar was accessible to Mexicans at the time, even those with little money, so it was a natural choice. Once they learned that they could make these skull molds with the ingredient and water (that's all it really is), the idea of the sugar skull evolved and grew to be an important symbol of the day.

Today, many different versions of the sugar skull exist. There are not only different sizes, but also coffins and skulls made out of chocolate and almonds (those you can eat!). But the meaning behind the calaverita remains the same.

Going back to the altar, skulls are placed as decorations to recognize the person who has passed. His or her name is written on the sugar skull's forehead and, depending on the age of the deceased, the size of the skull might vary - baby skulls are dedicated to those who passed at a young age and larger skulls are for adults. The colors of the skulls differ, too. Some are covered in ribbons and icing, others are dipped in glitter and decorated with bright adornments like hats and bows. While you'll find a variety of versions, you won't find any that lack color, because color reflects life, and the Day of the Dead celebrates just that.

The symbol is a commemoration of the person you are honoring whether dead or alive. That's why you don't have to wait for someone to pass to offer them a sugar skull; you can give one as a gift on Day of the Dead as a sweet reminder that death is the only thing guaranteed in this life or in the words of my mother "la calavera es un símbolo de la muerte, lo único seguro en la vida."

This Is the Halloween Makeup Trend to Try if You Don't Want to Look Batsh*t

If you want to participate in Halloween makeup but aren't quite ready for some of the really bold beauty statements, we've found the perfect solution: bat eyeliner. It's both gothic and chic, for a look that celebrates Halloween but can also (just about) be worn during the day. Plus, it's one of Kat Von D's iconic looks, and we're always happy to follow her lead.

The bat liner is created much like the regular cat eye, but has some added points to the bottom for the wing effect. You can opt for just a standout liner look, or pair it with a Halloween colored eye, too. If you find doing a cat eye difficult, try using a stamp to create the outline, then using the tip of the stamp downward to form the wings.

Read on to see how others have incorporated bat liner into their makeup routines, and get inspired just in time for Halloween!

All You Need Is a Jump Rope For This Killer CrossFit Cardio Workout

When you're short on time, the last thing you want to do is pack your bag and commute to your gym. Sometimes it's nice to be able to squeeze in a tough, effective workout in the comfort of your own home (or outside, depending on the weather). This killer workout is perfect for moments like this, and it's a CrossFit classic, so you know it's a good one. It's called Annie, and although it looks simple on paper, it will have you sweating bullets in no time.

You'll only need a jump rope for this workout, and maybe a mat if you're working out on an uncomfortable surface. The workout alternates between jump rope and sit-ups, and you start doing reps of 50 for each, then work your way down by increments of 10. The point of this session is to work as fast as you can through the moves and time yourself, but that doesn't mean you should work so hard that you lose your form.

Annie calls for double unders, which is when you make your rope pass under your feet twice with each jump. It takes practice, so if you feel like you can't master this move quite yet, just do regular jump rope skips. If you do that, though, make sure you double the number so you fit in the same amount of work.

The Workout

  • 50 double unders (or do jump rope skips and double the number)
  • 50 sit-ups
  • 40 double unders
  • 40 sit-ups
  • 30 double unders
  • 30 sit-ups
  • 20 double unders
  • 20 sit-ups
  • 10 double unders
  • 10 sit-ups

Traditionally, this workout is done with diamond sit-ups. Here are the instructions for this crunch variation.

  • Lie on your back and open your legs into a diamond shape (aka butterfly legs) with the soles of your feet pressed together and knees out wide. Extend the arms overhead.
  • Inhale to curl the torso up, and tap the floor in front of your feet to stretch your glutes a bit.
  • Slowly lower back to the starting position.
  • This counts as one rep.

You don't have to do these sit-ups, though. There are plenty of variations on crunches that you can incorporate into this workout, so choose what works best for you, turn on some music, and bang out your cardio for the day!

10 Things Every Woman Should Do to Help Prevent Breast Cancer

There are several risk factors that can increase your chances of developing breast cancer. And while the risk increases as we age, there are certain preventative measures every women should do, whether she's in her 20s or in her mammogram years, to help reduce her risk of getting the disease. Read on for 10 things every women should do to help prevent breast cancer.

  1. Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight or obese has been shown to be a risk factor in developing certain types of breast cancer.
  2. Check up on your family history. How many people in your family have had breast cancer? If you don't know, now's the time to check. Having close family members who developed breast cancer increases your risk as well since certain risk factors are genetic.
  3. Don't be a stranger to your girls. Self breast exams may not have been given a ringing endorsement from the medical community, but you should still be familiar with how your breasts feel and look so you'll notice any changes.
  4. Drink in moderation. While that glass of red is good for you, excessive alcohol drinking has been linked to an increased risk of cancer. Stick to a one-a-day mantra if you want to reduce your risk.
  5. Keep exercising. Not only will working out help you maintain a healthy weight, exercising itself has been shown to reduce your risk of developing cancer. The American Cancer Society notes that as little as 1.5 to 2.5 hours of walking a week has been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer. Make it your mission to walk or exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, five times a week.
  6. Support the cause. Everyone goes pink for the month of October, so pick a trustworthy organization and show your support. By donating time or money or dropping a few bucks on a cute product for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, you'll be supporting breast cancer research that will help millions.
  7. Know the facts about birth control. Taking oral contraceptives is one risk factor for developing breast cancer, but the risk decreases to normal levels the longer you are off them (women who took birth control pills more than 10 years ago, for example, have the same risks as women who never took the pill). Weigh the pros and cons of taking birth control and talk to your doctor if you want to know more.
  8. Assess your risk. It always helps to be informed. Know all the risks of breast cancer - even ones that can't always be avoided, like starting your period at an early age, having a child after 35, or never breastfeeding - so you know what choices you have. Check the National Cancer Institute or The American Cancer Society for comprehensive lists of lifestyle, genetic, and environment risk factors.
  9. Don't be shy at the doctor's. Your doctor isn't just there to admonish you when you admit you have a sugar addiction, she's also there to make sure you are knowledgeable about why and how lifestyle choices affect your health. Make sure you ask questions about anything that's unclear to you.
  10. Relax. Just because you have certain risk factors for developing the disease doesn't mean you'll get breast cancer, or that you should spend your life worrying about getting it. After all, the biggest risk factors for getting breast cancer - being female and aging - aren't exactly something you can change. Instead of worrying, just do what you can to live a healthy lifestyle - you'll not only reduce your risk, but will also feel better overall.

Was This Fixer Upper Family "Deceived" Into Buying a Waco, TX, House?

The "Three Little Pigs" house from Fixer Upper season three may be named after a fairy tale, but it's proven to be a complete nightmare for the homeowners. Since moving into the North Waco home a year and a half ago, Ken and Kelly Downs say they've had to deal with late-night ruckus from nearby bars, suspicious activity, and even anti-Fixer Upper backlash from locals angry the show has made local taxes go up. The couple described their neighborhood as the "Wild West" to the Waco Tribune Herald and claim they've endured harassment and intimidation.

All of the Downs' frustrations came to a head, however, in the early morning hours of July 8, when a drunk driver crashed straight through the front of their house. Luckily, the Downs were sleeping in another part of the house and were physically unharmed - but they are emotionally traumatized and blame Waco for doing nothing to crack down on crime in the area and Magnolia Realty for selling them a house in a "bad" neighborhood. Kelly told the Waco Tribune Herald that they "feel deceived by the city of Waco and Magnolia Realty."

While some online commenters echoed the Downs' frustration regarding the police's inaction toward the criminal activity in the neighborhood, most were unsympathetic when it came to claims that Magnolia Realty was in any way culpable or shouldn't have allowed them to buy the property. Commenters note that they chose to purchase the house; they were not forced to do so. Furthermore, the couple had every ability to research the neighborhood before making such a huge investment in it.

I Tried This $10 Rose Gold Hair Makeup, and It Made My Hair Look So Cool For Fall

To say I love rose gold is an understatement - I'm obsessed with the metallic, blush hue. I have always wanted to dye my hair the color, but it's a little scary to go so permanently bold. That's why I freaked out when Clairol Color Crave Hair Makeup ($10) was released. It's a temporary dye that washes out in just one shampoo, and you can't argue with the low price tag. So I tested out the product in its rose gold shade at home to see if it's truly worth the purchase.

I have ombre hair, so I decided to apply the hair makeup to the lower half of my tresses since I like the dark-to-light look. The product comes in a little bottle with a soft, fuzzy sponge on the end. You squeeze the bottle to get the product out, much like you would do with a tube of lip gloss. I rubbed the applicator directly on my hair where I wanted the color to show up, and OMG, I was shocked by how well it popped. Even on the darker parts of my hair, it was very noticeable. It was a little messy while I applied it, but I laid out some paper towels to protect the surfaces around me, and I was good to go. After applying, I used a blow dryer for 10 minutes on my strands; the heat locks in the color so that it doesn't rub off. Next, I used a curling iron to style my newly colored hair.

The result was so impressive - not only was the color payoff great, the product also left my hair shimmery like a true rose gold would. The texture of my hair was still soft; my hair didn't look crunchy or stiff at all. The hue was especially pretty in the sun when the shimmer could reflect off of the light. I slept with the hair makeup overnight, and it looked just as good the next day. It didn't rub off on my pillowcase either. It comes off in the shower with just one wash, so you don't have to worry about it sticking around longer than you'd prefer.

Overall, I was impressed with the product, and I totally plan on using it again. It's a fun way to change up my hair color without any commitment. The Clairol collection offers all sorts of colors - I think I'll try lavender or copper next. If you're looking to play with your look, give this hair makeup a try. Prepare for the compliments to flow!

Why It's Important For Me That My Kids Speak Fluent Spanish

Marcela Valladolid is an American chef, author of Casa Marcela and cohost of the Food Network's The Kitchen.

At the beginning of my career, as a 19-year-old food editor, seeing my last name in all caps in the masthead for Bon Appétit, the bestselling food magazine in the country, made me feel like I was on top of the world. My dad carried that first copy in his car and showed it to anyone who would look at it. I felt like I'd finally made it outside of my hometown of Tijuana, Mexico. But the funny thing is being raised in Tijuana is what I'm most proud of.

Growing up in the border city influenced my cooking and recipes but also gave me the language skills that played a big role in the career and life that I have now.

I recently read an article in The New York Times that said that in order to fully dominate a foreign language, it's essential to immerse yourself in the culture. Hello! That's pretty much how it works for us border people.

We spend half of our time eating tacos in Tijuana, attending posadas, and being serenaded by mariachis outside our windows by drunken admirers - I'm proud to say this happened to me on various occasions ending in threats from my dad and my brother. The other half was spent in San Diego, either attending school or hanging at the Fashion Valley mall. Kids at the border could choose. We could be Mexican or American, just by switching from English to Spanish and back without any accents.

I never felt that being bilingual was anything but normal. I didn't think twice about having a conversation with my friends and family on either side of the border or in either language. I just used whichever one I needed at the time - Spanish to get something from my parents while home in Tijuana, and English while getting my movie theater tickets at Horton Plaza in downtown San Diego. Bilingual was something that I just was. I was born into it; one of the benefits of living on the border and jumping from one country and moment to the next.

It wasn't until a book signing in San Diego for my most recent book, Casa Marcela, that I had an "aha" moment. A woman walked up to me in tears, saying she wished that, like my son, David (who I speak about lots in my TV show), she had been allowed to learn and speak Spanish. She had grown up in an area where her parents felt assimilation was needed and to protect their children, they raised them only to speak English. It was a humbling moment that reminded me of how fortunate I was to be raised in a very safe and supportive community and by extremely heritage-proud parents.

I grew up thinking being Mexican is the coolest thing in the world. Our food, our music, our traditions, and our values were always sold to us as better than anyone else's, which is how every child in any country should be raised.

So I hugged the woman and we cried. I promised that I'd continue instilling this pride in my kids, because it's not just a language. It's so much more. It's what comes with it.

My fiancé, Philip, whose mom is from Guadalajara, and I recognize that the language, culture, customs, and traditions of our Mexican ancestors are what make us who we are; that if you don't have that pride, you are completely lost. You can try as much as you want to pretend you're someone else, but it's impossible to cut yourself off from your history.

Like our parents, we'll keep teaching our children and our communities, through social media, TV, even en este escrito, that our language is beautiful. It's much more than merely dominating it; it's about being proud of your roots.

Fight Belly Fat With This Boredom-Busting Interval Workout

While it's often overlooked at the gym, the exercise bike can help you burn tons of calories and tone your legs. When working out on a stationary bike, the trick is to make sure you have the machine set with enough resistance. This way, you won't pedal yourself off the bike, but you'll also be able to sprint when necessary, which can make for a great interval workout. Mixing up the pace challenges the heart and lungs, but interval bike workouts also prevent boredom while pedaling on a road to nowhere.

We love this workout because it is scalable to any fitness level. If you are beginning or advanced, listen to your body and go the speed that works for you in the sprint sections.

9 Things People With Clean Houses Do Every Day

Find yourself feigning excuses for why your friend can't pop up to your place to use the bathroom before the movie? Ever turn beet red with embarrassment when unexpected guests enter your home? It sounds like you have a messy house.

Imagine how much more enjoyable life would be if you were one of those perpetually tidy people whose homes could be company-ready with 15 minutes' notice. We wanted to turn our clean fantasies into a reality, so we researched the daily habits of people with clean houses - note the word "habits." What we learned is that it takes more than a few deep cleanings to achieve this status of cleaning goddess. It takes daily work and preparation to keep your house in a constant state of near perfection.

Read on to discover the nine habits people with clean houses do every day, and how you can adopt them to get out of the disaster zone you've been living in.

  • Make Their Bed
  • Before you leave the house in the morning (or better yet, before you leave the bedroom), make your bed. If you're in a rush, pull the comforter up to the pillows, and smooth it out to create the semblance of a made bed. This simple act creates a sense of order in your bedroom and sets your day off on a productive note that's likely to carry through.

  • Empty the Dishwasher in the Morning
  • Get the dishwasher emptied and ready to go for the day. Doing this in the morning lays the groundwork for an easy dinner cleanup at night and keeps dishes from stacking up in the sink throughout the day.

  • Do a Load of Laundry Every Day
  • Washing clothes on a regular schedule keeps the dirty pile from becoming overwhelming (not to mention, ensures that you'll never run out of clean underpants). Those with big families prefer doing it every morning, but if you live alone, doing laundry a couple of predetermined days a week should suffice.

  • Use Baskets to Organize Things
  • When there's a place for everything to go, it's easier to keep everything in its place. Scatter cute baskets throughout the house to corral your things, and add shelves to hold the big pieces.

  • Don't Procrastinate
  • When a box is delivered, unpack the goodies inside, and discard the packaging immediately. The same goes for dealing with spills or messes. The longer you wait, the harder they become to deal with.

  • Put Away Their Clothes From the Day
  • As tempting as it is to drop your clothes on the floor after a long day's work before slipping into your sweats, tidy people take the time to fold, hang, or place them in the hamper, as necessary. Do this, and your clothes and floor will both look better for it.

  • Clean as They Go
  • You can dramatically minimize your mess by cleaning as you go. If you rinse the cutting board while the pasta is boiling or start loading the dishwasher while the chicken is baking, the bulk of the work will be done by the time you serve dinner.

  • Never Go to Bed With a Dirty Kitchen
  • Resist the urge to climb directly into bed after a big meal. Take care of any and all kitchen cleanup that night - clean pots and pans, wipe down counters, etc. Not only will the mess harden and be smellier the next day (read: more challenging to clean), but waiting means that you'll have to spend your morning backtracking to make up for what you neglected the night before, instead of getting a head start on the day ahead.

  • Plan Ahead
  • Whether it's picking out your outfit the night before or reviewing what cleaning products you need to restock before tackling the bathrooms that weekend, you can give yourself a jump on the day by planning ahead.

The 30-Day, 100-Rep Squat Challenge!

This squat challenge will make you fitter, stronger, and sporting the best butt of your life! Are you ready to get your rep on? This 30-day challenge is going to help you build up to being able to do 100 squats in one workout. Don't think it's possible? It is, and after the burn and the effort, you're going to love tagging us with your success online.

Squats are a compound exercise, which means they work multiple muscles at the same time. Why is this important? Simple. It adds extra calorie burn and reduces the need for multiple isolation exercises that force you to spend more time in the gym.

In order to get to the result of 100 squats in one workout, we're going to throw in a few variations of the basic squat along the way so you can hit this level. This will ensure you are working every muscle in your lower body, in every different way. Plus, it will keep you from getting bored from doing just one exercise over and over.

We consulted with certified personal trainer Heather Neff, who selected the following three variations of squats you'll be performing in this progressive plan. Here's how to do them.

Basic Squat

  • Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, eyes facing forward, shoulders back, and chest out. Extend your hands straight out in front of you to help keep your balance. You can also bend the elbows, clasp the fingers, or hold your arms up.
  • With a slight bend at the knees, send your hips back as if you are about to sit in a chair. Keep your head facing forward as your upper body bends forward a bit. Rather than allowing your back to round, let your lower back arch slightly as you descend.
  • Lower yourself down until your thighs are parallel to the floor, pressing your weight back into your heels.
  • Keep your body tight, and push through your heels to bring yourself back to the starting position to complete one rep.

Sumo Squat

  • Stand with your feet wide, toes pointing out. Bend your knees, lowering your hips deeply, so your thighs are parallel with the floor. Make sure to keep your weight back in your heels.
  • Then rise back up, straightening the legs completely and squeezing the glutes at the top of the movement to get the most from the exercise. This completes one rep.

Jump Squat

  • Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  • Start by doing a regular squat, then engage your core and jump up explosively.
  • When you land, lower your body back into the squat position to complete one rep. This entire movement should be done in one smooth motion. Land as quietly as possible, which requires control.

The Challenge

By adding three different types of squats to this challenge, it won't just give you good variety, but it will also work and challenge your muscles to grow and become stronger. Here's Neff's workout to get you to 100 squats!

8 Things You Never Knew About Target Food, Straight From an Insider Employee

Since you spend so much time shopping at Target, you want to know as many secrets as possible, right? You're in luck, because we reached out to a Target representative for the official inside scoop on all things food shopping, from the return policy to the best money-saving tips. Keep these insider secrets in mind the next time you take a quick - or not so quick, probably - trip to Target.

You can return anything.

If you buy any item (including food) and decide you don't want it, you can return it for a full refund or exchange. "Guests can return anything, including grocery items. Most unopened items in new condition, returned within 90 days, will receive a refund or exchange." If it's a Target-owned brand item, you can return it within a whole year.

You can offer feedback and request items you'd like to see in the store.

Target really does listen to customers' concerns. "Because we are always eager to hear about our guests' experiences, Target.com encourages guests to create product reviews, add photos and videos, and interact with other guests." You never know if your idea might inspire the next snack in Target's aisles. "We have a test kitchen at our headquarters filled with expert chefs and trend watchers that create recipes and Target-owned innovations."

You can save a lot of money using Target's Cartwheel app.

Seriously, if you don't have Cartwheel by Target on your phone yet, download it now. It's an incredibly user-friendly app that makes your shopping experience even better. Cartwheel offers daily deals on items all over the store, from food to cleaning products. If you're feeling lazy, you don't even have to search the app - just scan the bar code of your product in the app and Cartwheel will tell you if it's on sale (pro tip: Archer Farms and Up & Up products usually are). "Since launching the app three years ago, more than 25 million guests have signed up for Cartwheel and saved more than $500 million on their Target purchases," the Target rep said.

You should take advantage of the price-match guarantee.

If you find something at a lower price within 14 days of your purchase, Target will match the price. "We'll match the price if you buy a qualifying item at Target then find the identical item for less at Target.com."

Some of the top-selling groceries are . . .

Archer Farms Monster Trail Mix, Simply Balanced Blue Corn Tortilla Chips, and Simply Balanced Vanilla Nut Clusters. Those are just a few of the bestselling snacks from Target.

Kids get free cookies at SuperTarget bakeries.

Kids who are 12 and younger can get a free cookie at SuperTarget store bakeries. The company recently added the option of getting a free piece of fruit instead.

You can get Archer Farms coffee beans ground at any in-store Starbucks for free.

Since most Targets have a Starbucks inside, this perk is incredibly convenient and desirable for coffee-lovers. While you're ordering your coffee for the day, you can also get a bag of whole beans ground to take home for the week. Archer Farms's coffee selections include French Roast, Cinnamon Vanilla Nut, and Café Mosaica.

You get a free "smash cake" when you purchase your child's first birthday cake from a Target baker.

While the rest of the party enjoys a separate, intact birthday cake, your baby can dive into a (free) smash cake.

An HGTV Star Reveals the 6 Upgrades That Will Make Your Bathroom Feel Like a Spa

If pampering yourself is high on your list of priorities (and if it isn't, it should be), a luxurious bathroom is exactly what you need. In Scott McGillivray's latest Reno to Reveal project - follow along on social media using #Reno2Reveal - he turns a small basement bathroom into a spa-like retreat fit for a king or queen. Read exactly how he did it below.

Love what you're reading? Head over to our Snapchat for more awesome, bite-sized content!

Curbless Glass Shower Enclosure

"If you want your bathroom to feel more open, there's one sure-fire way to do it. Install a glass shower enclosure. It's way more luxurious than a shower curtain, and it removes the visual obstruction," said Scott. "In addition, I also designed the shower to be curbless, which has a significant impact. It opens up the sight lines and, when combined with the frameless glass, makes this small room feel huge."

Makeshift Steam Shower

"Within the glass shower enclosure, I added a special feature. The glass goes all the way to the ceiling and has a vent at the top that can be opened and closed. So if you feel like indulging in a steam shower, you can close the vent and allow steam to gather, and when you want a regular shower, you can open it up and allow the steam to escape," Scott explained. "Steam generators can be very pricey, but this solution allows you to get a similar experience at a fraction of the price." And don't forget that if you're creating a steam shower, you'll want to tile the ceiling so it's properly waterproofed.

Shower Bench

"No decent steam shower can be without a bench," said Scott. "To up the luxury factor, I installed a custom bench directly in the shower and tiled it to match the rest of the space. While you can bring in another type of waterproof bench, nothing looks as good as a custom built-in unit." Scott also added a built-in tile niche to hold toiletries, such as shampoo and soap.

Handheld and Rain Shower Head Options

"This bathroom is all about indulgence so I added both rain and handheld shower options. Rain showers provide full coverage when you stand underneath, so every inch of you gets to enjoy the sensation. It would be silly to have a spa bathroom and not include one. But that said, sometimes you need to wash and go so I included the handheld option for the ultimate in convenience," said Scott.

Heated Floors

No luxurious space is complete without heated floors! Scott explained, "the worst thing would be to step out of a great steam shower only to put your feet down on an icy floor. While heated floors can be expensive to install in an existing room, it's well worth considering when you're going through a renovation."

Vanity Storage

"Nothing kills serenity like clutter," declared Scott. "To avoid the problem of bottles, jars, and toothbrush holders taking over the space, I installed a large vanity with plenty of storage. Above it I hung a nice big mirror that reflects light along with two hanging pendants." As a pro tip, Scott added that you should never install lights over a mirror in a bathroom because it will cast unflattering shadows on the face.

Exclusive: Meet the 2 New Inspiring Faces of CoverGirl - They're Not Who You Think!

If diversity and inclusiveness are the name of the game, CoverGirl is winning. And perhaps its latest two ambassadors - both athletic stars in their own right - are helping the major makeup brand march ahead at full speed. POPSUGAR is thrilled to exclusively announce that fitness trainer Massy Arias and motorcycle racer Shelina Moreda have just been welcomed into the CoverGirl family. They join a varied roster of names, including Maye Musk (who is 69 years old), Ayesha Curry, Issa Rae, and James Charles.

CoverGirl is certainly shaking up the stereotype that beauty brand ambassadors need to be A-list actresses (though they have some big Hollywood names, as well). It feels like, in 2017, beauty icons look more like nonfamous people. And that's not to say that the recent group of CoverGirls and Boys are not stunning (they are!), but they feel even more relatable than in past years. It's the age of the influencer, and consumers want to identify with authentic voices.

The idea to merge fitness and beauty is not new, but it's definitely becoming a louder part of the conversation. "Athleisure makeup" - which are cosmetics you can wear while you work out and then to do errands, go to brunch, etc., after - is a growing category. And many brands are partnering with fitness gurus, closing the intersection between the two worlds. Another recent example is Pantene's choice to partner with Ruth Zukerman, the founder of indoor cycling studio Flywheel Sports, and MMA fighter Ronda Rousey. But this is the first time we've seen it done by a makeup brand of the CoverGirl scale, and it's proving that beauty is becoming more holistic.

"Today, wellness is increasingly seen as an important component of inner and outer beauty, but you don't often see beauty cross over into the world of sports," said Ukonwa Ojo, CoverGirl's senior vice president. "We want to change that, and it goes beyond sports, too. People have many varied interests that aren't mutually exclusive. This is an important element of diversity, and we should celebrate and encourage the freedom of expression that comes along with it. For us, makeup is a very powerful form of self-expression, and we couldn't be more excited for Massy and Shelina to bring their incredible energy and love for beauty to CoverGirl."

OK, so who are Massy and Shelina?

Massy came to the US from the Dominican Republic at 13 and is open about how fitness essentially saved her life from depression. Her fitness program, MankoFit, is about feeling healthy emotionally, mentally, and physically. She's also a brand ambassador for Target's C9 Champion collection, and she has a baby daughter (Indira) so adorable and gorgeous, you'll likely want to start following her on Instagram ASAP.

Then there's Shelina, who sports a helmet for her profession yet somehow has Giselle waves - seriously. She spent her childhood riding motorcycles on her family's dairy farm in Northern California before getting internationally recognized. Shelina has raced at the pro level everywhere, from the US to Asia and Europe. She is also credited for breaking stereotypical barriers, being the first female to race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on a motorcycle and race in the Zhuhai International Circuit in China (she finished in third place).

Get to know these women even better through our exclusive email interviews ahead! Plus, see behind-the-scenes images from their CoverGirl campaigns.

I Tried CBD Oil to Calm My Nerves While Flying, and This Is What Happened

I have such an intense love/hate relationship with flying. I think flying is one of the coolest experiences, but it still absolutely terrifies me for reasons that make no sense whatsoever. While in flight, I go through several routines that help calm my nerves, and if any of it is thrown out of whack, I find myself having a near meltdown. But at the advice of POPSUGAR Fitness editor Dominique Astorino, who used CBD oil for anxiety, I decided to try it on my last batch of flights to see how it would work for me.

My CBD oil of choice was Diamond CBD oil in cotton candy flavor, because I'm nothing if not a child at heart. Over the course of four flights, I experimented with how much I used and when to see if I could find the magic formula. I opted to fully use it as a tincture, as that is the easiest for me to do while traveling. But, rather than drop it into any liquid, I put it straight in my mouth for efficiency.

Flight 1: New York to Denver

Because of poor planning on my part, I got to the airport much later than I wanted to for this flight, which meant I didn't take my CBD oil until I'd already boarded the plane. I opted to do two nearly full pumps of the dropper because I tend to be fairly resistant to CBD and THC and I wanted to really relax. About an hour into the flight, I started to feel slightly tired but not drowsy and pretty relaxed. Overall, the flight was pretty calm, but once we were coming into Denver, which is never fun, I was hyperaware of everything, and the CBD had no effect at that point.

Flight 2: Denver to San Francisco

I had a very short layover in Denver and wasn't sure if I should try topping off my earlier dose of CBD, but I went for it, because, again, Denver airport problems. I only used one dropper full this time, and it was about five hours after my previous dose and about 30 minutes before my flight. Our takeoff was terrible, so I would have loved to be relaxed, but this time I felt no effects of the CBD oil other than my palms feeling extra sweaty. The relaxation reached me later in the flight, but at that point, I didn't feel like I needed it as much.

Flight 3: Los Angeles to Denver

Poor planning on my part resulted in me flying through Denver again to come back home, despite how much anxiety the flight route gives me. But I was better prepared on the CBD front this time, which was a very good thing when I realized that a lot of my usual comforts during a flight were going to be taken from me. I checked into my Southwest flight far later than I usually do and was stuck with a bad boarding spot, which meant no window. Then the passenger who had the window seat of my row closed the shade, and I actually wanted to panic. Luckily, I had taken three droppers full of CBD oil about 45 minutes prior to this and had already started to feel drowsy. Despite being very uncomfortable during the entire flight, the CBD absolutely helped to calm me down.

Flight 4: Denver to New York

I finally got it right for the fourth flight. After another layover in Denver, where I topped up on the CBD with another two droppers, I was actually able to nod off during the flight. It's extremely rare for me to feel calm and comfortable enough during a flight to actually fall asleep, so this was a bit of a miracle.

Overall, I would recommend this particular CBD oil for anyone who is a nervous traveler. The percentage of CBD in the oil is low enough to make it legal to purchase, carry, and use, but it's still concentrated enough to give you the calming effects. The small bottles are actually perfect for travel, because they meet TSA requirements for the amount of liquid you're allowed to bring on a plane. However, all that being said, make sure to read the instructions that come with any CBD or hemp products you purchase and adjust accordingly to see what will work for you.

This Year's Harvest Moon Is a Little Peculiar, and You Won't Want to Miss It

It's a lucky year for gazing into the sky and seeing something spectacular. While we'll need to wait till 2024 for the next solar eclipse, if you look up on Oct. 5, you'll see the full moon come out earlier than usual after sunset. Called the harvest moon, it's an annual treat that basks the Earth in a little extra light, giving us one last taste of Summer.

The harvest moon is the name given to the full moon that's closest to the Autumn equinox on Sept. 22. Usually, the full moon falls close to the equinox in late September, but this year, it happened on Sept. 6 - hence the later date. Harvest moons tend to look bigger, brighter, and orange in color because they rise close to the horizon.

If you happen to miss the harvest moon's rise at 2:40 p.m. ET on Oct. 5, keep your eyes peeled the next few nights after that. Because the moon rises almost right after sunset, you'll see it waning but still looking like a full moon. While this year's harvest moon is not a supermoon like last year's, it's still a stunning sight to see to mark the beginning of Autumn.

But rest assured, slurpers: you won't have to wait until the end to sip on this milky sweetness. The Cinnamon Toast Crunch Shake features vanilla soft serve, sweet syrup, and the cereal squares, and according to the press release, it's "a cup of cinnamon swirl bliss."

7 Reasons an Airport Lounge Membership Is Totally Worth It

Let's be honest: airports aren't generally the place to relax. Although they serve as doorways to sandy beaches, historic cities, and beautiful nature retreats, the long lines, large crowds, and overprice food usually mean the "vacation" vibes don't start here.

But, luckily, airport lounges offer a much-needed escape from the terminal bustle. Depending on the membership, they can come with a steep price tag, ranging anywhere from $99 to more than $500 for an annual membership. There are others ways to snag membership - many major carriers offer a "pay with miles" option, and quite a few travel credit cards offer various lounge memberships as a perk. It is undoubtedly an investment, but if you're an avid traveler, the money you'll save in food and drink alone can add up quickly. Plus, you can't put a price tag on peace, quiet, and clean showers. You'll never be upset about a flight delay again.

This Theory About Insecure Will Make You Scream "Molly, You in Danger, Girl!"

Season two of Insecure was probably its best season yet. We were introduced to so many new characters this go around, including Molly's (Yvonne Orji) good looking childhood best friend, Dro (Sarunas J. Jackson). Things quickly heat up between the two after their first run in with each other at a local cupcake shop, which is also where we're introduced Dro's wife, Candice (Gabrielle Dennis). A few days later, Dro drops a bombshell on Molly while slow dancing together at a party: he's in an open marriage.

Although Molly initially resists his advances out of respect for his wife, Dro insists that Candice is perfectly OK with him sleeping with other women. In fact, he tells her that it was her idea to be open in their relationship so there wouldn't be any secrets to hide from one another. Now that all sounds great on paper, but when you take a closer look at Dro's actions, it starts to paint a different story.

Fast forward a few episodes later, and Dro and Molly are now having sex regularly (more than 17 times, but who's counting?). Molly definitely seems to be developing genuine feelings for this guy. Granted, he is a sweet talker, and the one time she actually tries to break it off, he effortlessly convinces her that their affair is nothing to be ashamed or afraid of.

To be fair, we don't know much about Dro or his moral compass to know for sure if he's lying about being in an open marriage, but that hasn't stopped fans from posing valid questions. My own suspicion about Dro not being honest with his wife about his sexual partners was confirmed at the end of season two. After sneaking off to the bathroom for a quickie at a birthday dinner party Candice is also attending, Dro tells Molly to fix herself up and wait a while before exiting the bathroom so that he isn't seen leaving with her. If Dro was already forthcoming about his relationship with Molly to Candice, why would it upset her to see him exiting the bathroom with her?

I've also taken into account that Dro only calls or hooks up with Molly when Candice is out of town or not in the same room. The one time Candice did call while he was having an intimate bathtub moment with Molly, Dro failed to mention where he was at and what he was doing in the moment. Coincidence? I think not. The second time we see Molly and Candice face to face, Candice doesn't seem to have the slightest clue that Molly is sleeping with her husband. After all, Dro is the one who said the whole point of agreeing to an open marriage is so that there wouldn't be any secrets to hide, but it sure looks like he wants to keep Molly as his secret lover.

We will just have to wait and see how the drama unfolds in season three of Insecure, but one thing is for sure: things are about to get real messy, y'all.

I Gave Up My Son For Adoption to My Own Parents - and Now I Want Him Back

This article written by Jessica Hall, who gave her son up for adoption to her parents, was originally featured on one of our favorite sites: YourTango.

Giving up my son was one of the worst decisions of my life.

I had my first child, a son named Daemon (pronounced DAY-mon) on October 2nd, 2005. He was beautiful. I know all parents say that about their kids but he truly was.

He came out with a little blond mohawk, gorgeous blue eyes, and soft skin. His cry was one of the most precious sounds I had ever heard in my life and it made me want to cry (with joy) every time I heard it. His father and I were elated.

His father and I eventually separated and divorced in 2007, but he promised to stay in Daemon's life. For the next year, he came in and out of Daemon's life sporadically and refused to help me support Daemon financially.

The court put Daemon's father on child support - but that only works if he actually pays. I saw no money from him at all and it put a huge strain on my finances. Plus, he hardly spent any time with his son. It was also increasingly hard to keep my insurance because I quit my job when I got pregnant with my second child (with a different man), which turned out to be a high-risk pregnancy. Plus, Daemon got sick a lot and the bills added up.

That's when my mother offered up a solution. She said she and my father could adopt Daemon and they would be able to put him on my dad's insurance at work.

Of course, he would still call me mom and call his biological father dad. Everything would be like normal except Daemon would go stay with my parents for a while until I could get back on my feet.

I thought I was doing the right thing but nobody could've prepared me for giving up your child for adoption - especially to my own parents.

In the beginning, it had seemed like a good idea until I found out my and my ex-husband's name would be taken off Daemon's birth certificate and my parents' names would be added instead. It may not sound like that big of a deal, but it felt symbolic to me. I knew they'd never keep me from seeing him, but it just felt wrong.

But I eventually agreed and so did Daemon's dad - as soon as I told him they wouldn't come after him for child support anymore if he gave up his parental rights, he signed immediately.

The decision was a lot more difficult for me because it meant that legally, I would no longer be Daemon's mom. Still, we met up at the lawyer's office and made it official on October 3rd, 2008.

Daemon is now eleven years old. Since then, my parents have changed the spelling of his name from Daemon to Damon. Damon lived with me and my current husband for about two years, but he was exceptionally horrible to his younger brother: lying to him and making him eat from the floor like a dog.

Damon didn't like that we would not let him watch Youtube or give him unlimited access to the Internet so he decided he didn't want to live with us anymore and moved back to my parents' house.

I love my parents and know that they mean well, but they lied to me. Everything changed when I gave up Damon to them. Sure, he still calls me mom, but he doesn't view me as his mom; he even told me that himself.

Any time Damon gets punished at my house, he immediately wants to go back to my parents because he knows he won't be in trouble over there and will be allowed to get right back on the computer.

My mother has even told me that she's never going to let me have him (meaning get my parental rights back) until she dies. They favor him over all their other grandchildren (I know they adopted him so it's slightly different, but still) and my mom makes her favoritism blatantly obvious, to the point that the other grandkids that are old enough notice. She buys him more birthday/Christmas gifts than any other grandchild and he has far fewer rules than the others.

Giving up my son was one of the worst decisions of my life. I can't raise him the way that I want and I have no say in any of the decisions regarding his life yet I'm still supposed to still be an active part of it.

It hurts trying to be there for a child who doesn't care about you and doesn't view you as his mother. I thought giving up my child for adoption, especially in the dire circumstances I was in, was what was best for him, but now I want him back.

At the same time, though, I want to move on with my life.

My husband and I have big dreams that involve leaving this lousy town. Plus, I have two other children I have to worry about and care for - two kids that actually want and need me to be their mother.

So, I'm at a loss. Do I give up on the child that doesn't want me or do I give up on our dreams to give the rest of my family a better life? At least if this were a normal adoption and not a family one, walking away wouldn't be so hard. Either way, I'm screwed.

T-Rex Hands Is the Bizarre Selfie Pose You Didn't Even Notice

It feels like every day a new posing hack hits the web and convinces us to step up our selfie game. Thanks to the Kardashians, we've mastered the art of "duck lips." And recently, a variety of other bizarre, selfie-enhancing techniques including squinching and fish gaping have joined the famous expression.

Now there's yet another new pose taking over Instagram called "T-rex hands." Beauty maven Huda Kattan coined the term and shared that it's basically the (calculated but slightly random) placement of your hand anywhere on your face. Your fingers should have a subtle, relaxed curve to resemble the clutch of a Tyrannosaurus rex while still keeping it classy.

We perused Instagram for some snaps of our favorite celebrities flashing their T-rex hands- and it turns out, pretty much everyone is doing it. Read on for Huda's hilarious explanation of the technique, and practice with your own paws during your next selfie session. It's always a great way to show off your nail art!

In light of the recent tragic event in Las Vegas, several airlines are making major moves to help those affected. Allegiant Air, based in Las Vegas, is offering free flights to family members of those who were killed or injured in the shooting. In a Facebook post, the airline said that Las Vegas is Allegiant's hometown and the event left it "heartbroken." They stated that "if you or your family members were affected by what happened . . . we want to help."

Southwest Airlines told POPSUGAR via email on Wednesday that the airline was also providing free flights to family members of victims. It will also help transport bodies of those who were killed.

"Our Southwest hearts are with everyone affected by the tragedy in Las Vegas. We are working closely with authorities to provide support to families affected by this tragedy. Southwest Airlines is offering complimentary air transportation to families who lost loved ones, or have a loved one who is hospitalized. We are also helping transport the victims who tragically lost their lives.

"We are allowing customers traveling to and from Las Vegas from Oct. 2, 2017 through Oct. 6, 2017 to adjust their travel plans without additional costs. Customers may visit Southwest.com to rebook their itineraries or call 1-800-I-FLY-SWA for assistance."

In addition to Southwest, JetBlue, Allegiant, and United were also reportedly waiving travel change fees to accommodate Las Vegas customers. United issued a travel waiver, which says that "the change fee and any difference in fare will be waived for new United flights departing Las Vegas between Oct. 2, 2017, and Oct. 13, 2017, as long as travel is rescheduled in the originally ticketed cabin (any fare class) and between the same cities as originally ticketed."

Workouts That Give Me Everything Running Promised (but Didn't)

There's so much to love about running - in theory, at least. It's a workout that I've always romanticized in my mind: it's just you and the road - no judgment or competition - and let's not forget that runner's high that can solve anything.

Sadly, my running reality is the exact opposite. In all the miles I logged chasing a runner's high, it never arrived. NOT. ONCE. Three half-marathons under my belt and not once was I left feeling like a gazelle or empowered. Instead I felt defeated and questioned what was wrong with me, why was running always so hard. All of my friends loved running, so why didn't I? It took many miles, injuries, and trips to a sports doctor to let go of the idea that running was the benchmark of fitness success.

It took a few years for me to get here - and maybe a breakdown during one pitiful training run - but I'm finally OK telling myself that I am not a runner, and that's OK. Fitness is a personal journey - personal being key. There is no right or wrong way; there's only your way. Once I fully embraced this idea and hung up my running shoes for good, my life changed for the better. Along the way, I was also happy to find that all the things I craved from running were there waiting to be discovered, just not on the track.

The Runner's High: Dance Cardio

If you ever told me that dance would be my thing, I probably would have laughed. I've never been great with choreography, and I let fear hold me back from attending a dance class. On a brave day, I allowed my friends to drag me to Hipline for my first-ever dance-cardio class. I was nervous, inside my head, and made a beeline to the back of the room - but I am so glad I went. That first class and every class since has been one big ball of happiness. Instead of judgement and fear, I found pure, unabashed joy - and one hell of a workout. Here I am, finally experiencing the "runner's high" described to me by so many friends, except at a dance class! I find myself lost in the movement and the music and have a permanent smile on my face the entire time. While Hipline is my absolute favorite, I've found the same feeling of euphoria at other studios like Zumba, AKT, and 305 Fitness.

Intense Cardio: Indoor Cycling

Even if my heel was sometimes left throbbing, I always appreciated the type of workout I got from an intense running session. There is no denying that hill sprints, speed play, and running intervals get the heart rate up in a major way. You know what else does? Indoor cycling. Whether I'm at Spin, SoulCycle, or Flywheel, I know I'm in for an intense workout that will having me climbing hills and maxing out - just like I did when I ran, except this time I'm enjoying the entire process from start to finish.

Buns of Steel: Rowing

Like so many others, I walked by the rowing machine in my gym without giving it a second thought. Then I took a class at CityRow and realized what a fool I'd been. Rowing is the definition of a total-body workout; it works all the muscles of your lower body (plus your core and your arms!) while keeping the heart rate up. Unlike running, it's much easier on the joints, which is exactly what my beat-up body needed.

Becoming Zen With Nature: Backpacking

One of the things I liked most about running was getting outside. Studio workouts definitely have their place, but being outside on a sunny day can't be beat, especially when a run ended up somewhere beautful like a coastal trail. I've always been big into hiking, but in the last couple of years, I've been doing a lot of backpacking. Being out in the middle of nowhere for days on end may sound terrifying, but it's led to some of the most beautiful backdrops I've ever experienced. From a black sand beach in Hawaii only accessible to backpackers to the ever-changing scenery of the John Muir Trail, backcountry hiking has given me a glimpse of nature I would have never been able to experience otherwise.

Stress Relief: Yoga

Sadly, running only added more stress to my life, which is why I am so grateful for yoga. I was slow to come around to it, but now I can't imagine a week without taking a couple of classes. I had to find the style that worked for me, the right teachers, and a studio I loved, but once that happened, it all came into place. My regular 90-minute classes allow me to truly unwind and let go of any stress I may be feeling. It used to be hard to turn off my mind, and now I look forward to that meditative state it provides me with.

An Unexpected Way to Prevent Avocados From Browning

This information might change your life. To prevent an avocado from browning, spray it with a little bit of cooking spray. When I first heard of this concept, I wasn't sure if it was true. But I tried it myself. I ate half an avocado and sprayed the remaining half with Pam. Then, I covered it with foil and refrigerated it. Days later, I pulled the avocado from the fridge and was shocked it see it was not brown at all. Seriously, try this; it's amazing!

Here's Why You Should Always Shop at Trader Joe's on Tuesday and Wednesday

There are plenty of Trader Joe's fun facts that would make any customer an even bigger fan of the store, and so will these secrets about what it's really like to work there. An employee who describes himself as a mate, or a manager, at Trader Joe's did a Reddit AMA ("Ask Me Anything") session in which he anonymously answered burning questions from fans on the internet. If you've wondered how good the pay is, if the notoriously nice employees are really that enthusiastic all the time, and how the employees feel when you ask to try products, read on to discover all the answers.

The employees really are always happy.

Someone wanted to know, "Why are you all so happy?" It's true that Trader Joe's employees tend to be enthusiastic and friendly all the time, so is there any sorcery or company policy behind it? The employee said, "Honestly, before I worked there and was just a shopper I was thinking the same thing . . . 'Why are all these people so damn happy, must be faking it or something.' But now that I work there I can tell you it is 100 percent genuine. We are just happy to be at work. It's a great job with great people and we get treated humanely. Need a break? Go stretch your legs. Hungry? Grab a snack. Also very flexible with leaving early/coming in late. Low pressure, low stress job that pays well = happy employees."

They LOVE when you ask to try snacks - really!

"I LOVE when customers ask to try products!!!! Yes, you get to eat as much as you want and the remainder will be given to crew members. We donate as much food as we can to local food shelters but some food does get tossed into the trash. If an item is out of code (expired) we write it off and it goes to the suitable location (trash or donated)." Just make sure it's a reasonable request. He continued, "We're not gonna grill up a steak for you, but something that you can open up and taste, yeah go for it. They'll be happy to open it and let you try. Chips, candy, snacks. Stuff you can just open and eat. Shouldn't be an issue."

Trader Joe's might never come to Canada.

At least, according to this person. When someone asked if the store would ever come to Canada, the response was, "Sadly I don't think so."

Kids can get treats if they find the hidden animal.

"Each store has a stuffed animal of some sort hiding somewhere. It's really just for kids to run around and find the missing animal, and they get a treat. Kids seem to LOVE it and parents go along with it too."

Managers have great hourly wages.

Your hourly wages might start at $10 at first, but once you move up, the pay gets even better. "There is no salary for managers other than the Captain (GM) but mates like myself are still hourly, which in my opinion is much nicer. I make $23 an hour and I work 50 hours a week, so factor in the OT and I get paid handsomely for a job I love doing and is low stress/fun. Plus the benefits are the best."

There's a reason for the quick expiration dates.

When a customer commented on the fact that the "bread has nearly immediate expiration dates," the employee explained about Trader Joe's lack of preservatives. "The best answer for this is that NONE of our products, breads included, have any sort of preservatives in them. Also if the section leader (person who orders that section, in your case - bread) does a poor job and orders too heavy then they are always having backstock which depletes slower so the new stuff becomes old stuff quick. And rotation. But I feel your pain. Thanks for the question!"

The best days to shop are Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

According this employee, there are certain best days to shop at Trader Joe's. "Tuesday, Wednesday are the best days. Early morning is best time. I think it's hilarious people go on Sunday and complain that we are so busy. Right when we open is honestly the best time to go. We get fresh produce in every morning so you can get the best products, and some stuff actually will sell out for the day around 2 to 4 p.m., including perishable and non perishable items."

Don't get caught trying to take advantage of the return policy.

Trader Joe's generous return policy allows you to return any product you didn't like, even if you already opened it, and sometimes even without a receipt. But the employees can totally tell if you're faking it and are attempting to "return" an item you just found while shopping. "For example, our vitamins can run up to about $20 for a small bottle, a customer will grab it off the shelf and come to a register claiming a refund. The company knows this happens and enforces the policy, knowing well they are being frauded. It eats at my core though. The worst kind of person."
