Drop Everything and Listen to This Band That Justin Timberlake Discovered
One day in 2013, Adam tweeted at Justin Timberlake. He thought nothing would come of it, and so did his two bandmates, Matt and Scott. The next morning, they received a direct message from Justin on Twitter that said, "I've never done this before, but I felt the need to reach out to you guys." Fast forward two weeks later, and the three of them are having dinner with Justin at the Four Seasons in downtown Atlanta.
Shortly before this serendipitous brush with arguably one of the most legendary music icons of our generation, Adam Hoffman, Matt Lipkins, and Scott Tyler, who make up The Shadowboxers, had hit a wall. Although they'd just spent two rewarding years touring with the Indigo Girls and performing in front of thousands of people, the album they made in 2013 didn't make much of a splash, and they were forced to rethink their plan moving forward.
In a harebrained attempt to gain some more visibility, they decided to do a weekly cover series on YouTube. They did their own versions of hits by Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Pharrell, Frank Ocean, and, yep, Justin Timberlake. Their unique, irresistible take on "Pusher Love Girl" generated more than 200,000 views and elicited so much positive feedback that Adam figured they had nothing to lose by tweeting at Justin.
"I know you get a lot of these, but this cover of 'Pusher Love Girl' should be heard by you @jtimberlake," he wrote.

- The Shadowboxers (@theshadowboxers) December 4, 2013
Justin couldn't resist. After sitting down to dinner with the guys and offering to mentor them, he spent the next few years helping shape their sound. And this past Summer, he worked in the recording booth with them for countless hours, eventually producing their new single, "Hot Damn," which was just released on Sept. 22.
The Shadowboxers originally hail from Atlanta. Adam, Matt, and Scott have been making music and performing together for nearly 10 years, ever since they met at Emory University, where I also went to college. I knew all three of them long before they were discovered by Justin and long before they were propelled onto the road to fame - and I wasn't surprised in the least that Justin felt so compelled to get in touch with them.
"We officially met at the beginning of sophomore year, and we started playing together in Matt and Adam's dorm room," Scott told me. I lived in that same dorm, and I remember walking past their door and hearing muffled music (and laughter). "We submitted to the Emory Arts Competition and won it," he recalled.
Within a month of graduating in 2011, The Shadowboxers were on the road, performing regularly with The Indigo Girls. But that chapter had come to a close by the time Justin reached out, and they were seriously rethinking their next step.
"We would have conversations that would turn into arguments that would turn into fights," Matt told me. Three sharp minds, each with their own musical style (Scott: an "epic '80s sound," Matt: a "neo-soul world," Adam: "blues/folk"), stuck in a room together day after day trying to create hits? They were bound to disagree at some point.
But it was their variety and ability to (successfully) cross over so many different music genres that attracted Justin and elicited his support. "He saw that we liked Paul Simon and Frank Ocean, and he saw that we had all these other influences," Scott said. "He saw that we had a lot of potential to go in so many different directions."
For Justin, The Shadowboxers were more than a couple of pretty faces who could sing (although they are quite the trio of pretty faces). They were wildly talented musicians who had a lot to offer - and who had all the trappings of a universally loved band that would one day sell out countless arenas of loyal fans.
"[Justin] is at a point in his career that he's done so much and he wants to help somebody else, and help us so that we don't make the same mistakes as he did when he was coming up," Scott told me. "He was in."
I wish I could say the rest is history, and that this was their big break, but that's not the case. The Shadowboxers spent the next couple of years writing song after song, still struggling to come up with the right sound. They hustled. They argued. Although they were getting support from Justin along the way (oh, and being invited to "his home in Montana to hang with him"), Adam, Matt, and Scott weren't hitting their stride quite yet. And they were starting to think they weren't going to make it.
"We would go through intense bouts of writing together," Matt said, which were then followed by unsuccessful dry spells. Round and round they went.
When I asked why they weren't signed on with a label during this time, Adam said, "We decided that [Justin's] involvement meant something bigger than going for a traditional label route. With one phone call, he can do more than a full team on a major label." So they patiently waited for Justin as he was touring, having a baby, and starting an artistic development company, all the while sending him demos of the music they were creating.
"We had written and recorded over 120 songs. We were frustrated," Adam told me. "Without being explicit about it, Justin wanted that." Finally, with the help of a producer named K-KOV, The Shadowboxers drummed up several songs that caught Justin's ear, and they ended up in a recording studio in June of this year, where they spent all month recording their new music.
"Justin showed up pretty much every day," Scott said. Out of their combined efforts came "Hot Damn," their latest single. It's timeless yet current, and it's impossibly catchy. It also has a healthy dose of attitude and confidence, which was instilled by Justin and K-KOV.
I dare you NOT to shake your ass to this song #HotDamn. Proud of my boys! @theshadowboxers : https://t.co/IgI4nCMzPW http://pic.twitter.com/LEJyIXggap
- Justin Timberlake (@jtimberlake) September 22, 2017
Justin shared the news of their single on his Twitter, and just as he said, all it takes is one listen to "Hot Damn" to fall in love with it. Having followed The Shadowboxers for the last several years, there's no question in my mind that this is their best music yet - and it's only going to get better from here.
"We couldn't have done it without the trial," Adam said. They needed to go through hundreds of songs and demos in order to come out on the other side victorious. "Having somebody outside of the three of us to finally steer us in the direction was really what did it," Matt explained.
Some of the best advice they ever got from Justin? "Own these songs," Scott said. "Nobody else has the 10,000 hours that we do. We feel armed and ready now that we've got the product dialed in."
When I chatted with the guys, we rehashed some memories from our college years. When we were sophomores, Scott and I had a jazz improvisation class together (I'm a pianist), but Matt didn't make it past the auditions. "I f*cking sucked at the time," he joked. He and Adam performed in the all-male (read: swoon-worthy) a cappella group on campus called No Strings Attached.
When you look at The Shadowboxers from the outside, it's clear that they're heartthrobs in the making, but when I recall my memories of them from the past, I can't help but think they've been heartthrobs since long before they were discovered and groomed by Justin Timberlake. Now the whole world will finally get to see what many of their friends have seen all along.
Why the New Season of The Bachelor Could Be Pushed Back
Admit it - your Monday nights have lost their meaning ever since the last Bachelor franchise, Bachelor in Paradise, ended. But luckily, we never have to say goodbye to the drama-filled show for long! Next up on the list is The Bachelor, which means we're ready to watch 25 gorgeous women fight over one equally gorgeous man.
People were pretty shocked that ABC decided to bring back a blast from the past, Arie Luyendyk Jr. Actually, #BachelorNation had a lot to say about it. But when will we finally get meanings back to our Mondays? From the looks of producer Mike Fleiss's picture, Arie began filming with the ladies in September, which probably means there have been at least a dozen meltdowns by now.
Most recent new seasons of The Bachelor have begun on the first Monday in January - we're looking at you, Nick Viall, Ben Higgins, Chris Soules, and beyond. But since that day falls on New Year's Day, it could be pushed to Jan. 8. Then again, what's a better way to mend a hangover than to watch women sob over a man they've known for five minutes? NOTHING. So by all means, ABC, get to airing!

This year's movie kisses bring out a variety of emotions: swooning, lust, envy . . . it's sort of the huge reason we go to the movies. The Cutest Friendships to Come Out of The Bachelor
The Bachelor might be about finding love - and sitting at home in your sweats, drinking wine with your best friends - but if we're being honest, some of the biggest things we remember are the friendships that come from the reality show. Seriously, hear us out; there are a lot of great friendships that have come from The Bachelor franchise, and we can't get enough of them.
It sounds weird when you say, "I met my BFF while competing for a man's heart," but there are a decent amount of ladies who can actually say this, and we love them for it. Sure, there are a few good bromances that have started thanks to The Bachelorette, but the ladies who've become lifelong friends thanks to The Bachelor are much better and more fun. Sorry, but it's true.
Whether you watch every season to actually see a man find the love of his life or tune in to see which girls will cause drama or which ones will drink a little too much before a rose ceremony, we can all agree that ladies bonding even though they are technically competing with one another is a good thing. To see which of your favorite former Bachelor contestants became instant besties and continue to be close today, keep reading. Oh, and maybe grab a glass of wine and your BFFs as you do . . . it's more fun that way!

Why It's Important to Stop Drinking Shots of ACV
There's a lot to love about apple cider vinegar. Several studies support the claims that ACV helps the body lose weight and debloat. It also doesn't hurt that it's been shown to up energy levels either. And did we mention you can use it to wash your hair?! Before you start guzzling the bottle of ACV in your pantry, keep in mind that there's a right and a wrong way to drink the elixir.
First things first: while straight shots are a popular way to drink ACV - don't. Because it's highly acidic, over time ACV has the potential to do real damage to both the esophagus and tooth enamel. Instead, dilute ACV with water. In general, one to two tablespoons mixed into eight ounces of water is the sweet spot (like you'll find in this delicious ACV honey drink).
Now that you have the formula down, you need to know exactly when to drink it if you're looking to reap any weight-loss benefits. Carol S. Johnston, PhD, directs Arizona State University's nutrition program and has been studying ACV for more than 10 years. Johnston recommends drinking an ACV drink once or twice a day and always right before you eat; you want the ACV to be in your stomach before any food makes its way there.
Johnston told The Washington Post that ACV helps to block some starch digestion whenever you eat. Since less starch (and fewer calories, essentially) is being digested by the body, the spike in blood sugar is lessened. Adding to this benefit is that the good-for-you bacteria in your gut happily feeds on this undigested starch, which can lead to less bloating and a healthier digestive system. If you drink ACV without food, there won't be anything for it to work off of, which probably defeats the whole purpose of drinking vinegar in the first place.

The 10 Commandments of Meal Prep
If you hear the words "meal plan" and your ears perk up, you already know about the amazing benefits. Planning your meals and snacks ahead of time ensures that you'll have healthy, perfectly portioned food waiting for you, so it's key if you're trying to lose weight.
It also diminishes the stress of figuring out what you're going to eat and the rushing around trying to make food for every single meal. You're less likely to make unhealthy food choices, you'll save time and energy making food all at once, and nothing beats the satisfying feeling of gazing at your stocked fridge full of containers.
Before diving headfirst into meal-prep Sunday, here are some rules you need to follow in order to make meal planning successful.
Thou Shalt Plan Ahead
OK, so maybe this seems obvious, but if you just hit the grocery store and grab whatever, then get home and try to figure out what to prep for meals and snacks, you'll get quite frustrated. This part of meal planning might take you the longest, but it's worth it.
Sit down and figure out what you want to eat for the week, and how many meals and snacks you'll need to make. Maybe you only need to prep lunches and snacks because you can eat breakfast and dinner at home. Peruse Pinterest and other sites for recipe inspiration, and write it all down! Jot down what you want to eat (you can even post it on a chalkboard!), then make a detailed grocery list so you don't leave anything out.
Also make sure you have the appropriate containers on hand, clean and ready to fill. Mason jars and plastic and glass containers work great, but you may also want to invest in containers with sections to encourage variety and portion control.
Thou Shalt Make the Time
Set aside several hours to plan, shop, cut, cook, and store. Some people prefer getting it all done on Sundays, but you could also split it over the weekend and do the planning and shopping on Saturday and the cooking and cutting on Sunday. Or prep a few days worth of food on Sunday and a few more days in the middle of the week.
Thou Shalt Respect the Numbers
Whether you're counting macros, calories, or both, know your numbers before you start planning. Maybe you're carb cycling and need to eat more carbs on certain days? Consider what you need to eat and your schedule. If portion sizes are more your concern, also consider this when prepping and shopping. You don't want to make an enormous Crock-Pot of three-bean chili that serves 12 when you only need five meals - you may end up packing a serving that's way too big.
Thou Shalt Be Realistic
In a perfect world, you might want every meal and snack all planned out for the week. But in reality, that takes a lot of prep time, and can be really overwhelming if you're new to the meal planning scene. Set realistic goals, and maybe start with prepping five lunches for the week and a few staples for weekly dinners. As you get more comfortable, add in breakfast and snacks.
Thou Shalt Leave a Little Wiggle Room
Planning out every bite you eat for seven days straight might seem a little too strict. So maybe just plan out lunch and dinner and leave breakfast and snacks open-ended.
Thou Shalt Include Variety
It may be fastest to make an enormous batch of soup and eat that for lunch and dinner five days straight, but by Day 3 of veggie lentil soup, you may never want to eat another bowl of soup again! Be sure to have some variety in your meals and snacks. Even if you're making five mason jar salads for lunch, include different greens, chopped veggies, protein, whole grains, fruit, nuts, and salad dressings so each day's lunch feels completely different.
Thou Shalt Not Be Too Adventurous
I definitely don't want to discourage your creativity or your willingness to try new recipes or foods, but it's not a great idea to try out a new slow-cooker steel-cut oatmeal, make curry for the first time, and cook a week's worth of farro when you've never ever tried it. You'll have the most success when you prep the healthy foods you know you love, and save the experimenting for other days. And remember that you can still include variety with basic tried-and-true favorites!
Thou Shalt Learn Shortcuts
To speed up the process, take advantage of products and prepping hacks that will save you time. Buy prewashed packaged kale, frozen cauliflower rice, or precut butternut squash. Learn how to use your slow cooker, oven, stove top, and microwave all at once. Make double batches of soups so you can freeze leftovers for the following week. Buy protein bars and precooked grains instead of making them if that will leave you time for other things. Choose the easiest, fastest meals so you can make them and be done!
Thou Shalt Do What You Can
Hardcore meal-preppers could easily spend all day Sunday prepping, shopping, and preparing. If you can't devote that kind of time, don't! Do what you can and don't forgo meal prepping entirely because you can't commit three hours straight. Maybe you only have 30 minutes to cut up some veggies for the week. Do it, because every little bit helps.
Thou Shalt Have Fun!
Cutting up endless slices of carrots isn't exactly the most fun way to spend your Sunday, but find ways to enjoy the process. Whether you meal prep with a friend, check out inspiring YouTube videos on meal prep, watch a movie while cooking, or dance in between dicing (put the knife down!), make prepping more than a boring chore.
Also be sure to take a photo of all your hard work and post it on social media. Seeing towers of Tupperware is so rewarding and it'll inspire others to meal prep. But most importantly, it'll give you the satisfaction of knowing your food (and your health) is set for the week!
8 Things You Never Knew About Dunkin' Donuts, Straight From an Insider Employee
I spoke to a Dunkin' Donuts franchise owner to get the inside scoop on one of America's favorite doughnut shops. I won't reveal where he's located, but I will say that it's a newer location that regularly attracts a line out the door - he's even had to turn people away for fear of running out of doughnuts. It's a popular breakfast spot to say the least, and after learning these fun facts, you'll be an even bigger fan.
The first restaurant is still open and serving guests to this day.
Dunkin' Donuts was founded in Quincy, MA, in 1950 by Bill Rosenberg. Those were the good old days, when a cup of coffee cost . . . 10 cents.
All unsold food is donated at the end of the day.
"At the end of the day, everything is donated to a local, nonprofit food bank. It is left to the discretion of the individual franchisees of each restaurant to select their local donation partner."
You can customize essentially everything on the menu, so don't be afraid to ask.
"Our menu of beverages and sandwiches are completely customizable based on a guest's individual preferences. For instance, guests can customize their breakfast sandwich order with any type of bread, including English muffins, croissants, bagels, and flatbreads, and then choose what they'd like inside, including egg, cheeses, and a variety of meat options. So even though you may see a Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Breakfast Sandwich on a Bagel on the menu board, you can customize pretty much everything in the breakfast sandwich."
The top-selling doughnut flavors are . . .
Boston Kreme, Chocolate Glazed Cake, Chocolate Frosted, and Jelly Filled. (At least, at this particular location).
Almost 2 billion cups of coffee and nearly 3 billion doughnuts are served every year.
"Dunkin' Donuts serves more than 1.9 billion cups of brewed hot and iced coffee every year globally and more than 2.8 billion doughnut and Munchkins doughnut hole treats. On an average day, Dunkin' Donuts sells about 60 cups of freshly brewed coffee each second."
Dunkin' Donuts has its own school.
"Dunkin' Brands University, located in Braintree, MA, is the training center where the brand's franchisees and managers train to run Dunkin' Donuts and/or Baskin-Robbins restaurants. Hundreds of students attend Dunkin' Brands University each year from countries around the world, including India, Russia, and China."
Employees get free food and coffee.
If you're a coffee addict who also happens to love doughnuts, this might be the job for you. "Our crew members get free food and coffee, but it's up to each franchisee."
There's an easy way to save money every time you order.
"I'd recommend that guests sign up for our DD Perks Rewards Program, where they earn five points for every dollar they spend at Dunkin' when they pay with an enrolled Dunkin' Donuts card. Once a member earns 200 points, they receive a coupon for a free any-size beverage of their choice. DD Perks members also receive a coupon for a free, any-size beverage when they enroll in the program and on their birthday. They're also given exclusive, personalized special offers to earn bonus points for specific food and beverage purchases, so they can earn their free beverage even faster."

Law & Order: Arnel Salvatierra's Connection to the Menendez Brothers
Edie Falco as Leslie Abramson
If you've been watching Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Brothers you may have heard a lesser known true crime mentioned in conjunction with the brothers' brutal murder of their parents. That case centered around Arnel Salvatierra.
But who is he?
In 1986, Salvatierra was a 17-year-old living in California with his parents, Oscar and Ligaya, and his siblings. On Feb. 19, 1986, Salvatierra shot his father three times in the face while he was sleeping in his bedroom. Both the murder and Salvatierra's alibi were carefully planned. Oscar worked for the San Francisco-based Philippine News, and his son sent a death threat in the mail in hopes that people would believe his death was politically motivated.
While there are obvious surface connections between the two cases, what binds Salvatierra to the Menendez brothers is Leslie Abramson. The lawyer, who is played by Edie Falco in the NBC drama, represented all three of the boys. Her representation of Salvatierra may have even made her the perfect choice for the Menendez brothers given the similarities between their situation and Salvatierra's. The outcome of the 1986 case certainly had to make Abramson seem like a smart choice.
The real Leslie Abramson in 2007
Abramson was successful in getting Salvatierra a lesser sentence. After his mother, Ligaya, testified on her son's behalf that Oscar was abusive toward her and the children, a jury found him guilty of voluntary manslaughter, while acquitting him of first-degree murder. According to The Los Angeles Times, Ligaya testified, "No one could object to Oscar. That was the rule of the house. Nobody even argued with him. 'If I say it's black, it's black, even if it's white,' he used to say. That was the rule."
Despite Salvatierra admitting that the murder was premeditated, the jury believed there was enough evidence to support Abramson's argument that the young man had been abused by his father, and witnessed his father abuse his mother and siblings for years. As part of his probation, Salvatierra agreed to undergo psychiatric counseling. Unlike the Menendez brothers, his case has largely faded from memory, and it seems that Salvatierra went on to live a quiet life - at the very least, he has stayed out of the news since receiving his probation sentence in 1989.
Perhaps the Salvatierra case didn't capture the country's fascination in the same way as the Menendez case did because Abramson was able to prove to the jury that her client's home life was so painful that he was driven to extreme measures. The Menendez case is far more mysterious. Even a lawyer as dedicated as Abramson couldn't convince a jury that the brothers killed their parents due to abuse. While Salvatierra's story is fairly straightforward, the Menendez brothers' case remains one of the most puzzling and shocking murders of the 20th century.
Hush Is a Terrifying, Brilliant Horror Movie, and It's on Netflix
If you're a diehard horror fan, listen up. There's a new indie horror movie on the block, and it may just be one of 2016's most chilling films. It's called Hush; it premiered at SXSW last year, and it's available to stream on Netflix. It might be just the thing you need to tide you over while you wait for this year's other new horror movies. But Hush isn't just you're average scare, and it's not a thoughtless scary trash heap that was hastily assembled and sent out into the void. The movie is good. It holds its own among other recent indie horror movies that left a lasting impression, like the endlessly unsettling It Follows or the psychological bravado that was The Babadook. Feeling curious? Read on to find out why we loved it.
- It's original. We've seen home invasion movies before (think The Strangers, Panic Room, or You're Next), but we've never seen one quite like this. In fact, I don't ever recall the use of a deaf character - Maddie, in this case - as a storytelling device, and it makes for an incredibly compelling narrative. The best part is, Maddie's deafness isn't just a gimmick. It's not quickly forgotten or pushed to the side. It's woven intricately through the fabric of the film. It plays so much into Maddie's character, her lifestyle, and her world.
- It's plausible. Upon first glance, it might seem entirely impractical that a deaf, mute woman lives all alone in the woods. And yet, the backstory is strong. She's there for a good reason. She has people checking in on her, including family and a friendly neighbor. Even the logistics of some psychopath stomping around and tormenting her don't seem far-fetched. He takes her phone, cuts the power, and slashes her tires. It's a very real situation, with a very slim chance of escape.
- It's quiet. This movie does not rely on jump scares or a tense score to inspire dread. Sure, there are moments that could be considered jump scares, and there is certainly music at points. Even so, those touches don't come across as cheap, and they don't seem like a crutch. In fact, on the whole, the movie is pretty quiet. The horror builds in the silence. A few of the most terrifying sequences occur in a space devoid of sound. We spend scenes in Maddie's head, which effectively reduces all audio to faraway thumps.
- It keeps you guessing. Just when you think you know which direction the film is heading, it takes a sharp left. Despite the fact that the premise is so straightforward, Maddie's - and her assailant's - actions really keep you on your toes. It's this unpredictability that is both thrilling and compelling. It draws us in and keeps us there.
- It builds exquisite tension. Despite the fact that Hush falls under the "home invasion" subgenre of horror, the attacker doesn't actually spend more than 10 minutes inside the house. He spends the rest of his time walking the house's perimeter and tormenting Maddie in unimaginable ways. Whenever she exits the house, it's a heartpounding sequence to see if she'll make it safely back inside.
- It's smart. The best kinds of movies drop breadcrumbs in the film's first act and offer a payoff in the final act. This comes into play a lot in Hush as facets of Maddie's character, first presented in the very first scenes, become huge parts of the climax. Even notable objects from the film's opening prove to be crucial components of the chilling ending.

21 #MealPrep Ideas That Are Anything but Boring
Do you #MealPrep? Meal prepping, or making your weekly breakfasts, lunches, and sometimes dinners ahead of time, is the craze sweeping the nation. Many self-confessed meal preppers often take to Instagram to show off their ingenuity and handiwork. People on special diets, such as Paleo or those on Weight Watchers, have long enjoyed meal prepping, since it can be hard to pick up dishes that conform to their strict needs on a whim.

Lin-Manuel Miranda Brought TONS of Latinx Artists Together For Song Benefiting Puerto Rico
Leave it to Lin-Manuel Miranda to bring some of the biggest names in music together. The 37-year-old Hamilton creator rounded up a slew of Latinx artists for an extremely good cause: the song "Almost Like Praying," which is about the devastation in Puerto Rico. It includes vocals from Marc Anthony, Ruben Blades, Camila Cabello, Gloria Estefan, Fat Joe, Luis Fonsi, Juan Luis Guerra, Jennifer Lopez, Rita Moreno, Gina Rodriguez, and many more.
In an interview with NPR, Miranda said he incorporated "Maria" from West Side Story because he knew it "would forever have a different connotation on the island as a result of that," and it's his favorite song from the play. He also incorporated the names of 78 Puerto Rican towns into the song lyrics. All of the sales from the track will go to the Hispanic Federation's Hispanic Relief Fund. Listen to it above, and get ready to have it on repeat because it's not just for a good cause - it's really good, period.
Silly Halloween Costumes For Parents With a Sense of Humor
Halloween can be just as fun for parents as it is for the kids - especially when they get a major laugh out of their little one's costume. For some parents with a fantastic sense of humor, picking out a standard animal or movie character kids' costume just won't do. Instead, they use this night as an excuse to combine their creativity with their little one in order to make others laugh. From an epic fart cloud to a spot-on Mr. Clean, these are the funniest children's costumes for parents who certainly know how to express their sense of humor.
This Is How Much Cardio You Should Be Doing If You Want to Lose Weight
Strength training, cardio, and a healthy diet are said to make up the perfect formula for weight loss. But sometimes it's hard to know how much you need of each category. In particular, the amount of cardio you need in order to lose weight has been up for debate - some people think you need a lot, while others think that it's all about strength training.
Before deciding how much cardio is best for weight loss, Austin Lopez, CSCS and owner of Ausome Fit, said it's important to understand some basics of how your body functions; "3,500 is the number of calories in a single pound of fat and therefore the number required for you to burn in a week to lose one pound a week," Lopez told POPSUGAR.
This is how that breaks down in terms of sessions per week. According to Lopez, if you want to burn 3,500 calories in a week in order to lose one pound, you have three options:
- Do 7 days of 30-minute cardio sessions and eat a clean diet with an average calorie intake.
- Do 5 days of 30-minute cardio sessions and eat a lightly calorie-restricted diet.
- Do 0 to 3 days of 30-minute cardio sessions and eat a medium calorie-restricted diet.
The third option might look appealing to you, but Lopez reminds us that "this becomes unsustainable very quickly."
Similarly, Mahri Relin, certified personal trainer and founder of Body Conceptions, said she encourages her clients do four to five sessions of cardio a week, each lasting about 30 to 45 minutes. Celebrity fitness trainer Katherine Greiner recommends at least 30 to 45 minutes of cardio a day or 20 minutes of HIIT cardio intervals.
It's important you don't overdo it, though. "Cardio-heavy workouts can leave people famished, only to replace, if not exceed, the calories they have burned," Relin told POPSUGAR. "When the body has too much cardio it can result in adrenal fatigue, which can actually lead to weight gain," Greiner added.
Another thing all three trainers agree on unanimously is that these sessions of cardio must also be paired with regular strength training. You can't have one without the other in the hunt for weight loss.
Sing, Unburied, Sing Creates a Haunting and Lyrical Family Narrative
The American road novel is as classic as they come. For the characters in Jesmyn Ward's recent novel Sing, Unburied, Sing, which has been shortlisted for the National Book Award, the relationship between life and death on the road is much more visceral and intense than the average road book.
Jojo, a 13-year-old boy, travels with his mother and young sister to pick up his father from the Parchman Prison Farm, where he has been incarcerated for the past few years. Parchman is familiar to JoJo, who has listened to his grandfather describe the atrocities and essentially legalized slavery of Parchman's labor camp conditions.
While on the road, characters are literally and metaphorically haunted by the past. Jojo encounters the ghost of Richie who, befitting the title, was unburied and relegated to singing his eternal pain. Jojo's mother is battling ghosts of her own. While she is dealing with her drug addiction, and her toxic relationship for her incarcerated lover, she is visited by the ghost of her brother every time she gets high.
This lyrical and haunting novel explores how racism can affect a family, burdened by grief and hardships. The characters' journeys, given depth by a graceful and adept author, give the reader a realistic portrayal of how a family copes with heartache, loss, and life.
How Do You Get on The Bachelor or Bachelorette? Follow These Steps
Admit it. At one time or another, you've thought about what it would be like to go on one of the shows we love to hate and hate to love - The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. After all, most of us want to find that forever partner (and ride off into the sunset, preferably in a helicopter overlooking a tropical island). But what does it really take to get from just a thought to actually appearing on the hit ABC show? Here's everything you need to know!
Make Sure You Meet the Eligibility Requirements
First off, anyone related or closely connected to employees of the show aren't allowed to apply to be the Bachelor or Bachelorette, or a contestant pining to be with one of them. You also can't currently be a candidate in any type of political office or become one from when you submit your application to one year after the first broadcast of the last episode. All applicants must be single, at least 21 years old, and a US citizen or resident or foreign alien without restrictions on coming in or out of the country. Make sure you also have a passport (hello, exotic trips!) and are clean of a felony conviction, misdemeanor conviction, or restraining order. Oh, and make sure you realize that you will be on television and your life will basically be an open book. Ready for the next step?
Send in an Application, Pictures, and Video
It's time to shine! You can submit an application through mail or online, and you can even submit one for someone else! Be prepared, because it's probably more in-depth than any application you're used to. It'll ask about your salary, if you've ever filed for bankruptcy, how your previous relationships ended, etc. You can also attach your social media accounts (so finally all those cute pictures you took at brunch have a real purpose)!
Pictures are a must and a video is encouraged so you can show off your personality. They have seven suggested questions to answer in the video (from your ideal fantasy date to any special talents). However, they want you to have fun and be creative, so really get into it!
Attend a Casting Call
If you get this far (woo!), you'll probably be asked to come to a nearby major city for a casting call so the producers can get to know you in person. Depending on what happens there, you'll either move forward in the process as the casting directions narrow down the group or not be seen as a fit.
Good luck and cheers to many roses, one-on-one time, and an unbelievable journey!

What's a Castor Oil Pack and Why Is It Good For You?
Ever since my naturopath introduced me to the wonderful world of castor oil packs, I've been hooked. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Ayurvedic medicine, and naturopathy recommend castor oil packs for the ability to promote healing and reduce inflammation. My naturopath also touts the benefits of these packs because they are said to help improve elimination and circulation, especially of the lymphatic system by stimulating lymph and liver function. I've found them especially helpful during my time of the month to reduce the pain from cramps.
Easy to make, all you need are several layers of flannel and cold-pressed castor oil (a natural oil made from the seeds of the castor oil plant), both of which can be purchased online or from a local health food store. When placed on the affected area, the pack acts as a poultice to draw out impurities and promote healing. Since there are only a few small studies detailing the benefits of castor oil packs, we recommend that you meet with a TCM, Ayurvedic, or naturopath specialist to make sure it's the best solution for you.
How to Make a Castor Oil Pack
Materials:
- Soft, clean, thick material like organic flannel, wool, or cotton
- Castor oil
- Glass bowl
- Hot water bottle or heating pad
- Old clothes that you don't mind getting stained
- Plastic bag
- Large towel
Instructions:
- Put on your older clothes.
- Take your piece of flannel and place it in the bowl. Then pour enough castor oil over it to saturate.
- Get your hot water bottle or heating pad ready.
- Place your towel on a flat surface like a couch, your bed, or the floor. For added protection you can also put down a garbage bag so that your bed or couch won't get stained from any oil that manages to escape the plastic cover.
- Once you lie down, place your saturated flannel over the affected area of your body.
- Cover the pack with plastic.
- Place the heating pad or hot water bottle over the pack and let it sit for at least 45 to 60 minutes. During this time, you can rest or read a book.
- When the time is up, remove the pack and clean the area with water and a bit of baking soda.
- You can keep the pack in a plastic bag in a cool place or the refrigerator. I keep mine in a sealed glass jar in one of my kitchen cabinets. Just add another tablespoon of castor oil for the next session.
And if you're a visual leaner, here's a video describing how to make a castor oil pack.
You Probably Missed This Heartwarming Detail About Dwayne Johnson's Moana Character
By now, you've probably watched Moana a dozen times, but you might not know about the heartfelt connection Dwayne Johnson shares with his character, Maui. As it turns out, Maui was actually inspired by Johnson's real-life grandfather, WWE Hall of Famer Peter Maivia. Johnson revealed the fun tidbit on Twitter on Tuesday after a fan pointed out the resemblance between Maui and Maivia. "A lil' @Disney gem of a secret, my character Maui was partly inspired by my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia of Samoa. #grateful," Johnson wrote.

Johnson's sweet family connection just makes Moana that much more inspiring and beautiful.
Prepare to Cringe Watching Donald Trump Say "Puerto Rico" in a Fake Accent
In case you missed it, Donald Trump "loves Hispanics" - so much so, in fact, that while discussing Puerto Rico at the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration at the White House on Friday, the president decided to completely butcher the pronunciation of the disaster-ravaged island in front of a room full of Latino leaders. You know . . . because of the love.
The moment in question came during President Trump's speech at the White House, when he proclaimed - with an affected accent - that "we love Puerto Rico." Putting a heavy emphasis on the "Pu" in "Puerto Rico," Trump repeated his awful pronunciation of the US territory's name not once, not twice, but three times, concluding the performance with a self-satisfied smile and reverting back to his Americanized pronunciation of the name. Give it a watch below:
Pres. Trump: "PUerto Rico. We love PUerto Rico. And we also love Puerto Rico." http://pic.twitter.com/3fbzGvybd4
- Dan Linden (@DanLinden) October 6, 2017
While the moment garnered chuckles from attendees at the speech, it didn't take long for Trump's presumed mockery of the Spanish language and Puerto Rican people to spark heavy criticism online.
Despite his claims of loving the territory, Trump has spent plenty of the time since Puerto Rico was devastated by Hurricane Maria insulting its leaders and complaining about relief costs affecting his budget. Luckily for the US citizens in need of lifesaving supplies, at least there are former presidents and celebrities who are spending time raising money for Puerto Rico instead of butchering its pronunciation.
Grab Your Floo Powder - There's a Harry Potter Halloween Boutique in California
As a kid, the two most magical parts of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone were easy to choose: the secret magical marketplace, Diagon Alley, and the elaborate holiday festivities at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry. Something about enchanted, floating pumpkins and a massive Halloween feast in a castle enthralled my young brain, and the idea of shopping in an outdoor mall just for wizards was just plain addictive. (And, honestly, it still is now that I'm an adult!)
So when I found out that the annual Halloween boutique at Roger's Gardens in Corona Del Mar, CA, this year is inspired by the wizarding world, I just about lost it. Called "Magic & Mayhem," the elaborate experience has it all: Platform 9 and 3/4, its own take on both Diagon and Knockturn alleys, and a huge selection of Halloween goods inspired by different aspects of the Harry Potter series. There's an Owl Emporium, a "wheezy" joke emporium, a wizarding supply store, and an apothecary that will instantly transport you right into your favorite fantasy universe. Halloween and Harry Potter?! Sign me the hell up!
Just check out these incredible photos from Roger's Gardens, then visit the Magic & Mayhem boutique before the season ends!

What It's Like to Wear "Mermaid Lashes" For 3 Weeks
Remember blue mascara? Everyone dabbled in the bold look at least once in their lives - for me, it was as a tween in the early 2000s trying to copy the cooler, older girls at school. Maybelline's iconic Great Lash in Royal Blue was the holy grail of my mini beauty stash (even more than lip gloss!). I'd never guess that, one, the trend would come back new and improved nearly two decades later, and, two, that I'd be wearing it every day for three weeks in my adult life. Twelve-year-old me is shook.
I reunited with blue lashes thanks to Clementina Richardson, founder of Envious Lashes, who recently launched "mermaid"-colored lash extension services at her New York studio. In case you've been living under a rock, mermaids have been dominating the beauty world lately. From entire makeup collections to nail art to hair colors, people are loving all things rainbow-colored and mythical. Lashes, it seems, are the last frontier.
Envious Lashes offers green, blue, and purple lashes. The style varies in length, curvature, and shades depending on the effect you want. Because I always wear my eyeliner winged, I got my lashes "cat eye" style, with longer ones at the ends. As for the colors, Richardson applied blue on the outer corners with a fade into purple then black into the inner corners.
While I'm already a huge fan of extensions for the way they lift my short, straight, angled-down lashes, I was admittedly apprehensive about committing to purple lashes for several weeks. Would I have to change the way I did my makeup to complement the colors? Would it look too out-there for an office? I was pleasantly surprised by how natural-looking the extensions were. You could only really tell there was color when the light hit them just right.
"I don't want it to be too harsh. It's kind of like when you get your hair ombré - you don't want to stop and get a harsh line. It has to be a gradient, a soft blend," Richardson told me. In the end, my extensions were 60 percent colored - but she suggested those getting them for the first time to start with having 10-20 percent of the extensions colored and spread out.
"I tend to put more intense color wherever the longest length goes because it draws the eye upward and makes your eyes pop more," she added. Beyond personal preference, the colored lashes are also eye-enhancing. Purple makes green eyes look more intense, while green lashes complement hazel eyes, and blue lashes make blue eyes even more bright.
Behold, the insane before and after:
I'm fully obsessed.
And I'm not the only one - compliments have been flowing since I first got them weeks ago. See a couple of reactions my friends had when I texted them right after the service, below. The lashes were the first thing people pointed out whenever they saw me. They've been called "mesmerizing," "so cool," "beautiful," and "creative" and have spurred some "omgineedthatnow" reactions, but, more often than not, people were just excited to exchange stories about their blue mascara days. Even complete strangers on public transportation would talk to me, asking questions about them. Mermaid lashes are an icebreaker, that's for sure.
I'm not sure I could ever go back to mascara.
Now, for the technical stuff. The lashes are made of silk because mink is too thin and wispy for the color to really pop, Richardson explained. The clear glue used is akin to a surgical adhesive, so those lashes really aren't going anywhere for up to a month. I haven't been as careful with them as I should've been (rubbing, sleeping on one side, etc.), and they've still held up beautifully. They've actually cut down my makeup routine significantly because having full lashes already makes me feel "done" enough that I don't have to do much makeup. No eyelash curling. No mascara. No eyeliner. No eye shadow. And definitely no clumping.
The mermaid lashes are well worth the price, which starts at $105 and goes up to $450 depending on the style you choose. As for the process, it takes one and a half to two hours because a lot more thought and strategy go into the placement of the colors. Again - it's 100 percent worth it. All things considered, I'm not sure I could ever go back to mascara.
Would you, if your lashes now looked like this when you wake up?

How Horror Movie The Strangers Is - and Isn't - Based on a "True Story"
The 2018 horror movie slate is already building up quite the repertoire. In addition to a fourth Insidious film and an epic Halloween reboot, we're also getting a sequel to 2008's The Strangers. In this next installment, The Strangers 2, another evil trio torments a family in a trailer park. As far as we can tell, it's not based on a true story. Which, actually, brings us back to one of the most contentious facts about the original film. Did you think The Strangers actually happened in real life? After all, the original teaser trailer posited that it was "inspired by true events." Well, we've got some news for you.
In 2008, The Strangers, one of the most unsettling movies ever, hit theaters. It wasn't so much that the film, starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, boasted a unique concept; it's your typical, bloody home invasion film. And though it's a decent horror film, it's not the execution that makes it so disturbing either. The real reason The Strangers freaks so many people out - my brother, a die-hard horror fan like me, calls it the scariest horror movie ever - is because of the way it was marketed. In addition to the whole "true events" aspect, the full-length trailer revealed the bombshell phrase mumbled by one of the killers at the end of the film. When Tyler's character asks the killers why they've spent 90 minutes terrorizing and brutalizing her and her partner, one of them answers, "Because you were home."
These kinds of "true story" movies have a long history of stretching the truth, and The Strangers may be guilty of one of the biggest stretches ever.
That quote perfectly exploits a fear in the average person. We watch these three masked villains torture a young couple for no other reason except that they happen to be home. The jump in logic is easy: if a random group of murderers can pick a random house and kill a random couple because they're randomly home . . . this could feasibly happen to anyone, anywhere. And since it's "inspired by true events," this whole "it could happen to me" scenario is that much more likely and that much scarier. Here's the thing, though: these kinds of "true story" movies have a long history of stretching the truth, and The Strangers may be guilty of one of the biggest stretches ever.
According to the film's production notes, The Strangers was based on an experience the director, Bryan Bertino, had when he was young. "As a kid, I lived in a house on a street in the middle of nowhere. One night, while our parents were out, somebody knocked on the front door and my little sister answered it," Bertino recounted. "At the door were some people asking for somebody that didn't live there. We later found out that these people were knocking on doors in the area and, if no one was home, breaking into the houses." So, really, the only thing the story shared with reality was a group of strangers knocking on a door to a random house and making a decision based on whether or not the owners were home.
In situations like this, the language of the statement is most important. This wasn't "based on a true story;" it was "inspired by true events." Bertino experienced something, and it inspired his fictional movie. Which, not to be rude, is the creative process for any kind of storyteller, filmmaker, novelist, or otherwise. It's like that old, unattributed quote: "Write what you know." It seems, this time around, The Strangers 2 isn't being touted with the "true story" hook. It might still be good, but I can't help but think that will take away some of the impact.
OMFG, This Washington Couple Built an Exact Life-Size Replica of Snow White's Cottage
"Storybook" doesn't even begin to describe how over the top this replica of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' home is. Not a single detail was overlooked in the Olalla, WA, cottage: stained glass windows abound, the artisanal doors feature custom ironwork, wood beams are hand-carved, and walls and corners are all rounded as to be true to the fairy-tale-based movie. The home is truly a magical work of art - and it can be yours for a cool $775,000.
While there are only four bedrooms - notably not enough for each of the dwarfs to have their own sleeping quarters - the stucco property is a spacious 2,800 square feet and sits on a sprawling five acres thoughtfully landscaped with exotic trees. Rick Ellis of John L. Scott Real Estate holds the listing and writes that if you don't want to move in yourself, the fantastical property is prime for a bed and breakfast or wedding business. Just imagine how much guests will love walking across the whimsical stone arch bridge or peeking into the giant "ogre's stump."
The Kitsap Sun reports that Richey and Karen Morgan began building the home in the 1970s, meticulously crafting every detail and adding addition after addition over the decades. The current owner, Evonne Bess, bought the cottage in 2005, completed the project, and is now selling the beloved home with a heavy heart. Check out this one-of-a-kind property for yourself ahead.
Why This New Feature Coming to Uber Might Make You a Better Passenger
You're about to become the best Uber passenger ever thanks to a new feature rolling out for drivers. Starting Sept. 26, Uber will begin rolling out "Feedback for Riders," which lets UberPOOL and UberX passengers receive constructive criticism in the app. The goal of the feature is to make Uber rides a more pleasant experience for both people involved.
Before you start panicking about every single Uber ride, here's what you should know: you'll only get feedback if you're "dinged" by a driver three times in a 30-day period. Drivers who give you less than five stars will have a choice to pick from six different categories to let you know what went wrong. The categories are: attitude, wait time, number of riders, patience, wanted new route, and cleanliness. So, for example, if you get feedback three different times that you're always requesting a new route, you'll see that the next time you open the app. An example of what it looks like from a driver's point of view is below.
For now, the feature is only rolling out to riders in the US and Canada. So, if you start to see your passenger rating drop, you might want to reconsider how you treat your drivers and their vehicles.
Maryn Dropped 105 Pounds in 1 Year - and It All Started With This Water-Drinking Hack
Maryn Teed completely transformed her body in the span of one year - dropping from 315 pounds to 210 - and it all started with a photo. Back in July 2016, Maryn went to a family barbecue feeling confident about herself, but that all changed when she got home and saw the photos she was tagged in on social media. "I just cried and cried; I was so disgusted by myself," she told POPSUGAR, referring to how she looked in the snapshots. "I knew the next day when I woke up, I needed to do something about it." On Aug. 1, 2016, her fitness journey officially began.
So what was the first step of Maryn's yearlong transformation? She began by simply "choosing the right foods to help fuel [her] body" and cutting back on portion sizes. With the help of the MyFitnessPal app, she tracked her calorie intake, going from a 2,000-calorie-per-day diet to consuming 1,500 calories or less. "I cut out mainly pastas and stuff I could do without, like butter on things," she explained. "I'd cut out cheese when I knew I didn't need it." Soon enough, her body genuinely craved healthier foods and she stopped longing for the unhealthy foods she once regularly consumed. "I eventually got to where I was eating so well that the bad foods lost their hold on me," she told us. "I didn't want them. Trust me - you eventually get there, and they make you feel awful."
"I'd drink half my body weight in water every day. So when I weighed 300 pounds, I'd drink 150 fluid ounces of water a day."
While cutting back on calories, Maryn simultaneously upped her daily water intake - by a lot. We all know consuming plenty of water is a pillar of healthy living and a catalyst for weight loss, and Maryn shared an easy tactic that any avid water-drinkers should live by. "I'd drink half my body weight in water every day. So when I weighed 300 pounds, I'd drink 150 fluid ounces of water a day." That may sound like overboard (and cause for one four too many trips to the bathroom), but Maryn explained how she sticks to this goal. "I'd fill specific water bottles and keep them in my fridge or on me, and I would just make sure that before I'd go to bed that I would have finished all of them off. I actually used my Dunkin' Donuts iced coffee cups and would just fill them up and drink two with every main meal." I'll be the first to admit to often being too lazy to refill my water bottle at work, so having prefilled bottles ready to go at the start of the day seems like the way to go.
Besides these diet changes, Maryn also incorporated more exercise into her routine. She started by doing the 21-Day Fix workouts at home, and two months later, she found her current trainer, who has his own gym. "I fell in love with working out again," Maryn told us. She currently works out with her personal trainer three to four times a week, and also goes to a local gym five to six times per week. "I do my own workouts based on what my trainer has me do with him, and I try and add major cardio," she said. She mostly concentrates on high-intensity cardio workouts and heavy lifting, doing everything from flipping tires and mountain climbers to using dumbbells and riding the stationary bike or elliptical.
No workout is complete without some post-workout protein, which Maryn swears by. "It makes the biggest difference, at least for me! I can feel it legitimately fueling my body, helping me recover after the workout I had," she said. Her personal go-to is premade protein shakes like Premier Protein and Muscle Milk, and she also keeps snacks like granola bars and mixed nuts in her car for an added protein boost on the way home from the gym.
Now 105 pounds lighter than when she first started her journey, Maryn explained what motivates her to keep up the impressive hustle. "Honestly, I'm so scared to be the person I used to be. I was such an unhappy person in so many aspects of my life that I am petrified to go back," she said. "My grandma always says, 'If you're going to do anything, do it the best you can, or why even bother?' I look up to that woman so much, and I never want to let her down."
"Any progress is positive. It's not about how fast you do it; you just need to do it."
She also had plenty of advice for any fitness newbies who may feel intimidated by their lofty weight-loss goals. "Any progress is positive. It's not about how fast you do it; you just need to do it," she said. "Just move every day. Be active. Park farther away from a store so you have to walk. Take the stairs when you can. Remember how you feel at your lowest, and just know that you won't feel that way as you go on this journey. Remember you're human - you'll slip up, but just keep moving forward!" Ain't that the truth! We suggest writing Maryn's words of wisdom on a sticky note for days when you're in need of a motivational boost.
Are You Using the Right Size Dumbbells?
Dumbbells are an active girl's best friend because they're fairly inexpensive, compact, easy to use, and allow you to tone every part of your body. Using them can be a little confusing since they come in so many sizes, and many people may not realize that one size doesn't fit all exercises. For example, since biceps tend to be stronger than their neighbor muscles, the triceps, you'd want to use a heavier weight when doing bicep curls.
If strength training with dumbbells leaves you in the dark about what size weights to use for which exercise, here's a little cheat sheet. Since lifting too much can lead to a pulled muscle, here are the dumbbell weights you should start off with. Once your body becomes stronger, you can choose to gradually increase the amount.
| Exercise | Part of body worked | Recommended beginner weight |

Feel Slimmer Instantly By Avoiding These Foods That Cause Bloat
We know that many of you spend time eating healthy food and doing fun workouts, and often before a sunny vacation. Finding the most flattering suits for your body is a great start, but being equipped with as many tools as possible will help you feel confident before running around on the beach or sitting poolside. The last thing you probably want to worry about is feeling weighed down and bloated by choosing the wrong foods.
Here are six foods to avoid right before you hit the beach.
- Carbonated drinks: While you've hopefully taken the initiative to say goodbye to soda for good, sparkling water can be a decent substitute if you can't get enough of those bubbles. With that said, it's best to avoid any carbonated drinks before you hit the beach to steer clear of unnecessary belly bulge or gas. These drinks contain gas that gets trapped in your digestive system, which can create distention in your lower abdomen.
- Salt: Supersalty foods or added salt don't necessarily make you gassy, but they definitely cause you retain water. Even though those cantina chips and salsa may seem like the ideal prebeach grub, opt for something with lower levels of sodium like fresh veggies to help you feel your best before you head to the ocean.
- Cruciferous veggies: They're great foods for long-term weight loss, but if there's one time not to chow down on a heaping helping of broccoli, cabbage, or kale, it's right before you hit the beach! These veggies contain a complex sugar called raffinose that's known to cause a decent amount of gas.
- Gum: Chewing on gum may seem harmless for your debloating cause, but it can actually cause your belly to swell. The reason makes sense: you're swallowing large amounts of air.
- Sugary mixed drinks: While rum runners and piña coladas are nearly synonymous with dreamy resort beaches, all that extra sugar is not helping your cause. Between natural sugars and the artificial sweeteners found in these cool drinks, the high levels of fructose can make you bloat.
- Dairy: If you've got any form of lactose intolerance, then avoid dairy before you hit the beach. Between gas, bloating, and other belly discomforts, it's your best bet just to say no.
14 Jane the Virgin Characters You Can Be For Halloween This Year
We can't wait for season four of Jane the Virgin to start, and while we have been siting here waiting for that to happen, we've been pondering ways we could channel our favorite characters from the show this Halloween. Each and every single one of them has such a distinctive look and attitude, we thought it could be fun! So we've rounded up 14 easy ways you can DIY your way to Jane, Michael, Rafael, Rogelio, Xo, Petra . . . you know, everyone!
Your Kids . . . According to Zodiac Signs
It would be great if, along with the pillow-sized maxi pads, enormous mesh undies, and teeny-tiny diapers, someone would tuck a how-to manual inside our hospital bags when we take our new babies home. I don't mean a generalized manifesto of "this is a baby and here's how you keep it alive" – I mean a guide specifically geared toward the particular model we're tasked with parenting. But let's face it: Coffeemakers come with more detailed instructions than babies do.
When it comes to raising our kids, it's a guessing game, and their personalities are a huge factor in how easy it'll be. We must navigate through life anticipating their reactions to certain scenarios, and they're all different; one kid is clinging to our legs when we try to drop him off at daycare, and the next one is trying to unbuckle herself and get out before the car even stops moving.
But there is a way we can be at least a little bit clued-in to our kids' innate personalities, the things that make them tick (and the things that make them ticked-off): We can look at their zodiac signs. By knowing a little bit about the classic characteristics of our offspring's ruling sign, we can gain some insight into what drives them. Flighty or fearless, bubbly or bashful, their traits can depend on their horoscope – and we've got the scoop on what to expect from each.
- Capricorn (December 22 – January 20)
Capricorn kiddos are old souls, and you'll sometimes marvel at their level of maturity (it can seem like they're wise senior citizens living in young bodies). Because of this, they gravitate toward older friends, and adore spending time with Mom and Dad.
They are ambitious and diligent, stable and consistent, and will actually help keep you on schedule; consistency is key for kids born under the sign of the Goat. Their determination is unwavering, but that can also mean they're stubborn when it comes to any change in plans or deviation from their usual path. Introduce any changes slowly, and appreciate your little Capricorn's love of stability – and unparalleled loyalty.
- Aquarius (January 21 – February 19)
Fiercely independent and possessing a great need for personal space, Aquarian kids may not be the type to crave physical closeness (no "huggers" here!), but don't be offended – it's just that they're too busy exploring their environment to spend much time being cuddled.
From the time they're babies, they'll be poking their noses into every available nook and cranny, and by the time they're teens, they'll be begging you to allow them to travel alone (eek!). Adventure is the Aquarius kid's middle name, and they tend to be on the unconventional side, preferring to dance to their own drummer. Prepare for a bit of rebellion if you attempt, as parents do, to rein your little Aquarian in. Allow for as much independence as you (and your child) can handle, and remember that a traditional path, in an Aquarian's eyes, is not always the best one.
- Pisces (February 20 – March 20)
Pisces kids are prone to – as Katy Perry would put it – catching "feels." They are super-sensitive to the energies around them, and their emotions run high. They wear their huge, open hearts on their sleeves, showing compassion and caring for the vulnerable without realizing that they, themselves, are vulnerable.
Like a real live fish, your Pieces child may be a little on the shy side, seeking refuge in a hiding place from time to time. I hope the paint on your walls is washable, because sensitive Fish may find solace from emotional overload in anything artsy; Piscean kids have rich and fanciful imaginations and love being creative, whether through drawing or writing or simply acting out dramatic scenes with toys. Their considerate nature means they give ceaselessly of themselves, so make sure you refill their cup with a lot of love and nurturing.
- Aries (March 21 – April 20)
You've got an Aries? Better have insurance. And caffeine. Aries kiddos are spunky, energetic little fireballs who want to explore everything headfirst . . . whether you want them to or not. They possess a magnificent sense of determination, which will be a great asset when they get older, but may cause them to butt heads when their strong will clashes with yours (hey, their symbol is the ram, after all).
They are natural-born leaders (read: kinda bossy) who can quickly become frustrated when things don't go their way, but a few encouraging words and a pat on the back can quickly recharge your little Aries' go-getter spirit. They love applause!
- Taurus (April 21 – May 21)
Have you ever heard the term "stubborn as a bull?" It's accurate when it comes to the miniature bulls of the zodiac: aka Taurus kids. Very set in their ways, trying to change a tiny Taurus's mind can be an exercise in futility.
But bulls are strong and solid, and so are Taurus children – both literally and figuratively. They'll rarely be sick, and their steady, dependable temperament and thoughtful disposition make them lovable despite their occasionally inflexible nature. They thrive on a consistent daily routine; it gives them the feeling of stability that they crave. And when your Bull is showing those horns, your best bet is to be a calm, quieting influence.
- Gemini (May 22 – June 21)
Be prepared to say a lot of "mm-hmm," because you won't be able to get a word in edgewise with a Gemini kid in the house. Their interests are diverse and ever-changing, and their sociable personalities make them want to talk about it all (in detail), so you're in for a lifetime of listening.
Fortunately, though, Geminis are gregarious and funny; you'll be entertained by their exuberant nature and zest for communication. You'll also be exhausted trying to keep up, because your little Gemini will change preferences like most people change underwear – which means there will also be a lot of unfinished projects. But just remind yourself that each new undertaking is satisfying your Gemini's rabid curiosity, and keeping them from getting bored, as they so easily tend to do.
- Cancer (June 22 – July 22)
The symbol of the Cancer child is a crab, and it's fitting – because kids born under the Cancer sign make good use of their figurative "shell." They are naturally sensitive, and when feelings overwhelm them, they retreat protectively into themselves just like an actual crab would.
Despite their armor, they are easily hurt, so watch what you say when you're irritated; even if you don't mean it, your angry words (or anyone else's, for that matter) will pierce your little crab right through the heart. But as inconvenient as their sensitivity can be at times, it's also an asset, because those soft hearts are made of gold. Cancer kids are caring and considerate. They don't like to lead, and sometimes prefer solitude to the company of others, so keep that in mind when you're planning their extracurricular activities.
- Leo (July 23 – August 22)
Leo kids are the lion cubs of the zodiac, and you'll definitely hear them roar; they are nothing if not opinionated. Their way is the best way (just ask them!) and they enjoy being number one, which can make it a bit difficult to be a team player sometimes – they'd rather lead the team than just be a member of it.
Leos want to be the best at everything, and are particularly disappointed when they feel they aren't, so positive reinforcement goes a long way for these little Lions. They are proud and love to feel important. Any opportunity to make them feel like leaders is welcome, and appealing to that ego will work in every aspect of their lives . . . even if it's just telling them that you're having them unload the dishwasher because no one else does it better.
- Virgo (August 23 – September 23)
"Perfection" is the keyword for children born under the sign of the Virgin – not because they are perfect, but because you'll never see anybody try harder to achieve that status. They are typically tidy and fastidious, meticulously tending to every little thing from their rooms to their personal hygiene to their health (for dinner last night my family went to a pizza buffet, and my Virgo son opted to hit up the salad bar instead; that's a Virgo in a nutshell).
Virgo kids are naturally helpful, because anything they can do to contribute to an orderly and peaceful environment, they'll do. But because they're such creatures of habit, and so determined to make everything perfect, they can be hard on themselves if they fall even a smidge short. Keeping a steady routine, and gently reminding them that they're doing a great job (and that you love them no matter what), can help keep your little Virgo from becoming overly stressed under their own self-imposed pressure to keep everything just-so.
- Libra (September 24 – October 23)
Most parents hear, "It's not fair!" from their offspring, but parents of Libra kids might hear it just a little more often – and in this case, the kids are probably right. Libras, whose symbol is the Scales, are inborn seekers of balance and harmony. This makes them natural peacemakers, fantastic at mediating and helping people work together in compromise.
Unfortunately, if you lay down a parental rule they feel is unfair, you may find yourself in an argument; but the good news is, these pint-sized arbitrators can be convinced by a solid explanation. They have a deep appreciation for music and beauty, and thrive in a peaceful household – negativity is toxic to a little Libra. Crank up some tunes, dance in your kitchen, and watch your Libra kid's joy bubble over.
- Scorpio (October 24 – November 22)
You'll learn early to trust your Scorpio scamp's natural intuition, because as the most psychically-sensitive sign in the zodiac, Scorpio kids possess a keen ability to "read" people and situations. You won't always know what they're thinking or feeling, because they're also among the most private of signs – great secret-keepers, which can be both good when someone is confiding in them, and terrible when they're trying to hide something.
Your little Scorpion is also equipped with quite the proverbial stinger, and are champion grudge-holders when they feel they've been wronged. But Scorpio kids also love deeply, and benefit greatly from displays of affection. They are bold and unafraid, because they trust their own sharp instincts. And they're just as intelligent as they are intuitive, so the Scorpio child is no fool; they don't enjoy being talked down to.
- Sagittarius (November 23 – December 21)
The Sagittarius child has a warm, sunny personality: the smiley face emoji of the zodiac! These happy-go-lucky kids are always the life of the party, because they carry the "party" inside them wherever they go with their natural exuberance. They're endlessly optimistic, which is a wonderful quality – until it involves risk-taking.
Sagittarius children are so sure things will turn out positively that they sometimes fail to even consider the possible negative consequences. But it takes a lot to put a damper on that bright spirit, so they bounce back remarkably well when things do go awry. Little Sagittarians are very independent, and – like their sign, the Archer, are straight shooters: they'll tell you exactly what they're thinking, and always the truth, even if it's painful. These are the kids that will cheerfully tell Aunt Martha that her potato salad isn't as good as Mom's.
Raising children is never a simple task, but the better we understand our kids, the more effective parents we are. We may never have a definitive and specific how-to manual (darn it), but if their star signs can provide even the tiniest glimpse of insight, parenting them accordingly is definitely worth a try.
So, Ross Geller Fully Predicted the Plot of Black Mirror's "San Junipero" on Friends
If you're a fan of Friends, then you know Ross Geller is very passionate about his unagi/salmon skin roll brain power, so it should come as no surprise that he basically invited the futuristic plot of Black Mirror's "San Junipero" episode. The award-winning episode of the Twilight Zone-esque Netflix series tells the story of two women falling in love in the seaside town of San Junipero in the '80s, which is later revealed to be a simulated reality where elderly people can visit and the deceased can choose to live permanently. People inhabit their younger, healthier selves in San Junipero and can live forever due to their memory chips being looked after in a large computer facility.
Well, since Friends was always way ahead of its time, Ross talks about such a futuristic society during an episode in season six. While talking to Chandler, Ross described the world in the year 2030, saying humans will be able to live forever by having their memories downloaded onto a computer. And that, my friends, is the power of unagi.
