5 Moves Trainers Think You Should Skip and What to Do Instead

We go to the gym. We work out at home. We stick to moves we know and trust, but could some of those tried and true exercises be interfering with all our hard work? We asked three trainers to tell us what exercises they think we should just stop doing. They gave us two simple questions to consider: are the exercises helping you reach your goals, and do they lead to overuse injuries?

Read on for five moves you should consider skipping and more beneficial exercises to do instead.

Forget About the Box's Instructions; Try Cooking Your Frozen Pizza Like This

If frozen pizza turns out funky for you (burnt spots, soggy bits, general mediocre outcomes), here's a tip from the internet. Forget about the back-of-the-box instructions, and instead, cook your frozen pizza like this guy. Reddit user numbahtwelve says to fully thaw the pizza and crank your oven to the hottest temperature it will go (not the broil setting). Then, cook the pizza on the rack of the oven (unless you own a pizza stone or cast-iron skillet) for five to eight minutes or until the crust crisps and cheese bubbles.

His logic? Restaurants and pizza chains cook the 'za on pizza stones in commercial ovens that are set to 700°F-1000°F. This little hack emulates the professional method without the use of fancy equipment. Now, if you want to be truly fancy, brush the crust with olive oil and sprinkle crushed garlic or garlic powder on it, before baking. Mmm . . . seems like a simple yet reliable hack to try for the next frozen pizza night.

This Tip From Scientists Will Make You Question Everything You Ever Knew About Making Coffee

A recent study has coffee-lovers questioning everything they thought they knew about brewing a simple cup at home. The study, published in Scientific Reports and titled The Effect of Bean Origin and Temperature on Grinding Roasted Coffee, found that chilling coffee beans before grinding and brewing coffee results in a more flavorful cup.

If you're like me (a self-proclaimed coffee addict), you keep your coffee in an airtight container on the countertop near your coffee maker, which results in a totally fine and tasty pot of coffee. But I just might start keeping the container in the fridge to see if it makes a difference. This study, led by a team of scientists from the University of Bath in the UK, claims that "cooling of coffee beans significantly decreases the rate of mass loss through volatile sublimation/evaporation. Thus, coffee that is ground and brewed cold could potentially demonstrate increased aroma and or flavor in the eventual brewed cup." If you don't grind your own beans at home, chilling already-ground coffee should have the same effect.

The lengthy study goes into a ton of detail and science-heavy explanations (read in full if fancy charts and particle comparisons are your thing), but the bottom line is:

Refrigerating coffee beans = a better start to your morning.

You'll Know You're a "Real" Adult When You Accept These 25 Truths

I'm a firm believer in tough love. When it comes to figuring things out, I take the "sink or swim" approach, and even if it seems a bit harsh at the time, in the long run it usually means people come out better and stronger for it. There are some valuable life lessons to be learned that are easier pills to swallow than others - here are some brutally honest ones.

1. Life's tough. Get a helmet.

Relationships fail, people can be jerks, you can't always get what you want, and at some point in your life, you will have to stand outside in the pouring rain without an umbrella. Accept the fact that life isn't always easy, but draw strength from the knowledge that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and the hard stuff makes you appreciate the good things even more.

2. If you want to play hard, you really do have to work hard.

It's a trade-off, so deal with it. If it's any consolation, it's usually worth it.

3. If you f*ck up, it's your responsibility to fix it.

You're not a kid anymore, and no one is going to run behind you with a broom sweeping up your messes - nor should they. If you make a mistake, it's your obligation to rectify the mistake. As long as you're willing to admit it and embrace the consequences as yours and yours alone, then it's totally within your capabilities to make things right, too.

4. Your driver's license photo will never, ever be flattering.

Unwritten law of the universe: Any remotely attractive photo taken of a person getting their license will be secretly and immediately destroyed. The picture will be retaken until the end result is nothing short of cringeworthy.

5. Sometimes you have to give people the benefit of the doubt.

Some people don't even always deserve it. And it's never easy to do. And sometimes you give someone the benefit of the doubt, and it ends up blowing up in your face. But the best thing ever is when you give someone a chance, reserve your judgement, and realize there's a damn good reason for the way they are. You will definitely learn something more about them in the process, and you will probably figure some stuff out about yourself too.

6. You have control over your life.

Scary, right? The control you have over what happens to you can be both liberating and utterly terrifying. Do with it what you will - but you are the puppet master of your own play, so make it interesting, make it good, and make it something you can be proud of.

7. Making compromises is a good thing. Compromising yourself is NOT.

There's a fine line between changing your mind and changing who you are. Toe it with caution, and remember that nothing is worth compromising your core beliefs, even if it may seem like it will make your life easier at the time.

8. Success is just about perception.

You (and only you) can determine what success really means, because it differs from person to person. Maybe some days success is just making it out of bed, maybe other days it's parachuting out of plane. You get to decide.

9. Some people are just big assh*les.

And there's nothing you can do about it, so don't try. The good news is that the world is also full of really amazing people, too. So hang on to the good ones really tightly, and forget about the rest.

10. School doesn't come close to teaching you everything you need to know.

About life, that is. It's obviously valuable for countless logical reasons - getting a degree, broadening your horizons, teaching you how to fill in a tiny circle by the letters "A, B, C, or D," etc., etc. Still, it's just a tip of the iceberg and once you've left your 20s behind, it's easier to place your education in the box where it belongs and continue checking off other ones that aren't yet complete.

11. Love isn't just a feeling, it's a choice you make.

The older you get, the more complicated your relationships become. It's easy to fall in love, but it isn't always easy to stay in the same place you fell. Love is a choice you make every day, to love or not to love, to try or not to try, to work at it or not to work at it.

12. You can't help someone who doesn't want to be helped.

Sometimes you are fighting a losing battle with a person, and the best thing you can is bow out of the situation. As you get older, you get better at knowing when to recognize this and at making the (difficult) choice of just letting go.

13. Money won't solve your problems.

Money isn't magical. It can help with some of the more immediate problems, true, but you have to work through the real sh*t to be happy in life, and those things, more often than not, aren't money-related.

14. You are not the center of the universe.

Your problems are real, but they are not the only problems. Everyone lives in their own worlds, but it's essential to understand and acknowledge all the other worlds around you. It helps keeps things in perspective.

15. Things are rarely as cool as they seem.

No matter how big people talk, things rarely live up to the hype. But sometimes you have to weed through the mediocre to get to the really good stuff, so never shy away from a new opportunity. Approach new experiences with the expectations of a realist, but the hopes of an idealist.

16. You can't make everybody happy.

You can't make everybody happy, so don't even try. The harder you to try to please people, the more you forget to focus on your own happiness - and your happiness matters! Be kind, be considerate, but know that not everyone is going to like what you do or say, or even who you are, and that's totally OK.

17. Sometimes you have to put yourself first.

Thinking of yourself first isn't necessarily synonymous with being selfish. Sometimes your immediate needs or wants take precedence over someone else's - and there's nothing wrong with that. The key is knowing how to recognize when and where to exercise this luxury.

18. Jealousy is a huge waste of time.

Someone is always going to have something you want, and you're always going to have something someone else wants. See the conundrum here? The grass isn't always greener, and worrying about what could be will drive you insane.

19. Change is good. Sometimes.

All change is not bad change, even if it's ridiculously hard at first. Still, don't feel bad if you hate it, because it's not always right, and change for the sake of change is not always a good enough reason to make big moves.

20. You're not getting any younger.

You're not getting any younger, and your bucket list isn't getting any shorter. Start crossing sh*t off, like, now.

21. Sometimes you just don't have the answers.

You don't always know if what you're doing is right. We're all just winging it most of the time anyway, so at the very least, it should be a comfort knowing that even if you're clueless, you're not alone.

22. It's never too late to change.

Though your 20s are arguably the decade you grow and change the most, it doesn't mean that you are done becoming who you ultimately want to be when you leave them. Nobody's perfect, and we should all be open to change. If there's something you don't like, there's always time to do what you need to do to get to a place where you really love yourself.

23. Even if you have "more important" things to do, you NEED to get a good night's sleep.

Don't be a hero. You can't always be that young college student cramming for a test, and pulling an all-nighter will probably do more harm than good in the long run. Sleep. The world will not end if you do.

24. You can't have it all.

You can have A LOT! You can have amazing things, you can do almost anything, and your life can be what you make it. But you can't have it ALL - no one can. So aim high, but not so high that you make yourself miserable trying to live up to unattainable expectations.

25. The only time you should look back is to see just how far you've come.

You're probably doing better than you think you are. When you see analyze things microscopically, you'll probably find a lot more wrong than if you take a step back, look at the big picture, and see all you've accomplished.

Clean Up Sink Smells With DIY Garbage Disposal Refreshers

If your garbage disposal isn't as fresh as it should be, DIY these homemade refreshers for a quick fix. Made with lemon peel and baking soda, these little rounds pack a serious cleaning punch while costing only a few dollars to make. And they look darn cute in a glass jar next to your sink.

What You'll Need:

  • 3/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon liquid dish soap
  • 1 lemon
  • Sheet pan
  • Parchment paper
  • Small spoon or scoop
  • Sealable glass jar

Directions:

  1. Gather the ingredients for making the garbage disposal refreshers. Measure and add the baking soda and salt to a small mixing bowl, and give a stir, ensuring the mixture isn't lumpy.
  1. Now grate the lemon peel into the mixture along with adding the liquid dish soap.
  1. Slice the lemon in half, and squeeze the juice into the mixture. Continue stirring and adding juice until the mixture resembles course sand, which should take around three tablespoons of juice.
  1. Cover a sheet pan with parchment paper, use a small spoon or scoop to mold the half rounds, and then tap them out onto the pan. A rounded teaspoon measuring spoon works wonderfully. Continue molding the refreshers until the mixture is gone. Allow to dry overnight.
  1. Place the dried garbage disposal refreshers in a sealable container. When your sink isn't smelling fresh, simply place a few in the disposal, and flip the switch.

What's the Real Deal With Hydroquinone?

Hydroquinone has become pretty controversial in the beauty world. One minute, it's the miracle ingredient for clearing up dark spots, and the next, it's supposedly carcinogenic. It's hard for anything to be deemed trustworthy and effective once labeled as a cancer causer. Yet, through all the fuss, experts have maintained that hydroquinone remains the gold standard for erasing hyperpigmentation and age spots. So in all that toxic talk, what's the truth? We asked three experts to weigh in.

Why all the fuss?

"Much of this controversy stems from its ban in South Africa due to side effects," explained Sejal Shah, NYC cosmetic dermatologist and founder of SmarterSkin Dermatology. "Subsequently, other countries banned hydroquinone. It turns out that the questionable products in South Africa contained mercury and other contaminants, which more likely account for side effects being seen."

Dr. Shah further explained that there have been reports of hydroquinone causing cancer in mice when administered in high doses orally, but there are no studies to date showing that this happens in humans and with a topical application. "When properly formulated and used, hydroquinone can be extremely safe and effective, and we have numerous studies confirming this," Shah added.

Does it bleach skin?

Rachel Roff, a medical esthetician and founder of Urban Skin Rx, quickly squashed this myth. "When used within a safe strength, hydroquinone doesn't bleach someone's natural skin tone. It evens out the skin," Roff said. While it may not be proven to cause cancer, if used incorrectly, it can leave skin vulnerable to excessive sun exposure, which could mean a higher risk of skin cancer and sunburn.

"As a general known fact, side effects of skin bleaching, regardless of product or ingredient, include skin irritation and sun sensitivity," dermatologist Dendy Engelman said. There's also a condition called ochronosis, where the skin darkens. This reaction is mainly associated with high concentrations of hydroquinone that has been used for prolonged periods of time.

When do you need hydroquinone?

The main purpose of hydroquinone in skin care is as a lightening agent. "Skin lightening is performed for a variety of reasons, including sun damage. Melanin (aka pigment) is produced by skin cells called melanocytes, and various topical creams are used to reduce the amount of pigment that is produced to brighten the skin," Engelman said. These include hydroquinone, which is the most common, botanical extracts, and antioxidants.

How do you use it safely?

A hydroquinone regimen should be used for no more than three to four months at a time, followed by a minimum of two months off. After the two months, if hyperpigmentation is still an issue, you can return to using hydroquinone for another three- to four-month period.

What if you just can't get behind hydroquinone?

While the experts agree that nothing works on dark spots quite as fast as hydroquinone does, there are ingredients that are just as effective. It may take longer to see results, but natural solutions like kojic acid, alpha arbutin, niacinamide, and vitamin C can help even out your skin. Something like SkinMedica Lytera 2.0, a pigment-correcting serum that is retinol- and hydroquinone-free, balances the skin's melanin production and resists triggers that cause discoloration.

BBG: The Supereffective Fitness Program You Need to Know

We're totally crazy about Australian trainer and Instagram star Kayla Itsines and her program, BBG. But what exactly is BBG? Let's take a step back and look at the program that made Kayla such a star and her clients so obsessed.

What Is It?

BBG stands for "Bikini Body Guide," and it's been transforming women's bodies with dramatic weight-loss results since 2012. The guides include a fitness and nutrition plan spanning 12 weeks and can be done at home or at a gym.

The program is built around intense 28-minute workouts three days a week. That's it. They're broken down into arms and abs, legs, and full body, so each day of the week, you'll focus on a different muscle group. Expect to see moves like push-ups and planks, burpees, jumping jacks, mountain climbers, and weighted squats. The combination of weight training and cardio makes the program incredibly effective, while the meal plan helps women make more educated dietary choices to better fuel their bodies.

How Does It Work?

During a workout, you'll have two circuits, each with four moves, for which you'll do a certain number of reps. For example, circuit one might look like: 15 burpees, 15 push-ups, 20 jumping jacks, and 20 lunges on each leg. You repeat circuit one as many times as you can within seven minutes at your own pace. You'll take a one-minute break and do the same thing with circuit two, which will be a new set of four exercise moves. After completing circuit two, you start over and do both again. The result? An insanely challenging workout completed in less than 30 minutes.

As far as nutrition goes, Kayla doesn't really eliminate foods. Instead, she focuses on healthier choices and provides BBG members with healthy, delicious recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, desserts, and snacks. On her app, Kayla serves up weekly grocery shopping lists that provide the ingredients for that particular week's recipes, leaving zero guesswork.

What Makes It Different?

The simplicity and brevity of the workouts combined with their ability to be modified have made this program exceptionally attractive to many a newcomer. In fact, Kayla loves the idea that she is often a woman's introduction to fitness. She told POPSUGAR, "I want to be someone's first entry [to exercise], and I think it's a good way to enter, because you're entering into a community that focuses on how you feel rather than focusing on how you look."

Everyone's story is completely different when they come to BBG, but devotees find a way to make the program work for them, whether they're fighting ovarian cancer or thyroid cancer, beating obesity and losing 100-plus pounds, overcoming an eating disorder and building strength, or just trying to get a bigger booty.

We asked Kayla what she thinks makes BBG so special. "Firstly it's for women, which women love," she said. "And then there's the fact it's 28 minutes. . . . It's so quick and easy but also very challenging and pushes you." She also noted how it's a superempowering program that allows a woman to do everything on her own and feel accomplished as an individual.

While the program itself is appealing, what probably trumps it all is the BBG community. There's an element in this program that isn't really found in many other fitness programs, and it has created somewhat of a sisterhood. "It's really easy to lose motivation and lose inspiration," Kayla told POPSUGAR. "But when you have a community like the BBG community, it's actually very hard to lose motivation, because they're constantly encouraging you and posting photos. It's like a family."

Interesting in being part of it? You can download the BBG PDFs for yourself. Or consider Kayla's app, Sweat With Kayla, which offers the same workout program but more streamlined and customized with a LISS tracker and guided recovery. You'll also get on-the-go grocery lists, recipes, and more.

If You Wanna Build a Bigger Booty, Here's the Secret You Need to Know

It seems like everyone these days is itching to know what it really takes to build a booty. We see many different before-and-after photos on Instagram featuring impressive booty gains, leaving us wondering what has to change in our fitness routines in order to make that happen for ourselves.

As someone who has built her booty from the ground up, Diksha Gautham, NPC bikini bodybuilding competitor and NASM Certified Personal Trainer in progress, knows firsthand what kind of work it takes. "Muscle growth occurs when you put your muscles under stress and tension," Diksha told POPSUGAR. "So if you want your booty to grow, you gotta stress it out with the resistance training!"

These are the five glute exercises that almost always show up in Diksha's training program:

"The combination of all these movements hits all three main 'zones' of your glutes," Diksha explained. "These are all also compound movements, meaning they work a lot of muscles at once, so you burn a lot of calories."

The most important thing to keep in mind, though, is that you can't achieve visible booty gains without increasing the weights you're working with. "As your body adapts, make sure to continue pushing your booty by adding weight, increasing volume, or increasing the frequency which you train it," Diksha told POPSUGAR. In other words, the secret to growing your butt is constantly surprising your glutes with new challenges.

If any of this feels intimidating, Diksha recommends you do a couple sessions with a personal trainer, just to learn the form of compound lifts, like squats and deadlifts. After getting a solid baseline, you can continue to work on all these exercises on your own. "Don't feel intimidated," Diksha said. "Everyone was a beginner once."

The 5 Things You Need to Stop Believing About Lifting Heavy Weights

When you take a look around the weight room, men almost always take up the space. We've been conditioned to believe that guys like to pump weights while women go for a run or do yoga. This is a dangerous stereotype to believe; there are some serious benefits to be earned from lifting weights on the regular, especially if you're a woman. Whether you're trying to lose weight or grow some lean muscle, it's time to get friendly with that barbell. Let's start by debunking some common myths.

Myth 1: Weightlifting Makes You Bulk Up

"Most women don't have enough testosterone production in their body to put on huge muscle gains and 'get big,'" explained Lauren Clare, personal trainer and certified holistic health coach. That's because women have way less testosterone in their systems than men do (20 times less, to be exact), and testosterone is one of the primary hormones that promotes muscle growth. So when you see those big, bulky guys at the gym, don't panic, because it's not physically possible for you to turn into the Hulk from a strength-training routine.

Similarly, Clare discourages us from believing the photos you might see in bodybuilding magazines. The buff women you are seeing are taking supplements and training extremely hard, she told POPSUGAR. You won't end up anything like that, even if you lift weights several times a week.

Myth 2: Weightlifting Doesn't Burn Fat Like Cardio Does

If you're only running on the treadmill or hitting the StairMaster, you're not giving your body the tools it needs to burn fat efficiently. The secret to losing weight is gaining lean muscle mass, because this will spike your metabolism throughout the day and help your body burn excess fat. However, sticking to a cardio-only fitness program won't give you the chance to build that necessary muscle, which is why weightlifting is so crucial to overall weight loss.

"When women start strength training for the first time, they usually turn their fat into lean muscle and their body changes in overall composition in a positive way," Clare confirmed. "They become leaner, burn more calories, and most importantly feel much stronger."

Myth 3: It Won't Improve Your Cardiovascular Health

Experts say that a rigorous weightlifting program can be just as much of an aerobic workout as a session on the elliptical machine. Weightlifting also keeps your heart healthy, and Clare said it fortifies your bones as well. Cardio isn't the only way to keep your cardiovascular health in check.

Myth 4: Women Aren't Built to Lift Heavy Weights

You may have been conditioned to think that women aren't meant to lift heavy weights, but that couldn't be farther from the truth. Your body is built to do amazing things, and more importantly, it's built to be strong. "Weight training is one of the best ways to get your body toner, stronger, and increase your energy levels," Clare said. This is true no matter what gender you are.

Myth 5: It's Better to Lift Light Weights For More Reps

While there's nothing wrong with lifting light weights for higher reps, keep in mind that the only way you actually gain muscle in your body is by consistently introducing your muscles to change. In other words, if you stick with the same low weights over and over again, your body will plateau out and you won't see any significant weight loss. The more you shock your muscles into getting stronger, the leaner you'll look in the end.

Whey Protein Powder Is Way Better For You - Here's Why

We love us some protein powder - of all kinds! We use it for baking, making pancakes, and whipping up classic shakes and smoothies to give our bodies that extra boost of satiating and muscle-building power. But are some protein powders better than others?

While Clif Bar hosted us in Kona, HI, last week for the Ironman World Championships, we had the chance to meet countless phenomenal endurance athletes who know a thing or two about sports nutrition and protein. Most expert among them all was Clif's dietitian and triathlon coach Marni Sumbal, MS, RD, CSSD, LD/N - she's an 11-time Ironman. So, yeah, she knows what she's talking about.

We had so many questions for Marni, but one of the chief things that stuck out from our conversation was her tip about whey protein and the fact that it's actually way better for your body than other forms of protein powder (especially for muscle building and recovery). If you're able to consume whey (i.e., you're not vegan), you should opt for it whenever possible. Here's why.

  • It's a complete protein. This means "it contains all essential and nonessential amino acids (20 amino acids)." BCAAs for recovery? Check!
  • It's very low in lactose. Marni mentioned that even if you're lactose intolerant, you should still be able to have whey protein. Despite the fact that it comes from animal protein, it's extremely low in digestion-irritating lactose.
  • Your body can use all of it. Whey protein "ranks highest on the bioavailability list," said Marni. "This means that the body can make use of 100 percent of the amino acids found in whey protein." This also means . . .
  • Your body CAN'T use 100 percent of some other forms of protein. She went on to explain that not all proteins are this readily available for your body to absorb. "Because the digestive system absorbs some proteins better than others and some proteins have a larger amino acid profile than others, we can say that the protein in whey protein goes a long way in terms of its role in the body for muscles, energy, lean muscle mass, bones, etc."
  • You might not be getting your full serving without whey. Because other proteins aren't as easily absorbed by your body, you're actually getting less protein than what the label might indicate. When you eat protein, the body has to use energy to break it down in order to absorb it. "So if the serving size says 15 grams of protein, you may end up only absorbing 10-13 grams of protein instead of the 15 grams marketed on the label," she said. "But with whey protein being a fast digesting protein, you can quickly absorb all of the amino acids that your body needs to promote rebuilding muscle tissue and to meet daily amino acid needs. Whey protein ranks highest [in bioavailability] whereas peanuts are lower on the list in terms of bioavailability."

So are plant proteins bad? Not at all. "According to research, you can get a similar amount of protein from pea or soy protein compared to whey, but the absorption isn't as efficient," she told us. "There's nothing wrong with pea or soy protein in terms of a plant-based protein option if it's the only option." But if you're able to eat whey, she recommends it!

These 10 Eyeliners Are Makeup Artist Approved and Perfect For Blue Eyes

Eyeliner was invented to accentuate and bring focus to the wearer's eye color. When that eye color is blue, the right liner can make things truly pop. If you're a blue-eyed makeup wearer, browns and golds are your most obvious choice, as warmer tones make cool ones appear brighter. Although smoky eyes don't work for everyone, if drama is what you are after, blacks and smoky grays rimmed in the waterline will offer the most contrast. Colored liner on blue eyes often works, too, as blues and plums give a softer, less severe look while complementing the different tones of the eyes.

I'm a makeup artist, and when I have a blue-eyed client who lets me craft a look of my choice, I love to create one that will make her eyes look crystal clear and piercing. Here are my top 10 favorite liners.

Jessica Alba Has the 1 Genius Cleaning Tip We All Should Follow

Jessica Alba seems like superwoman. She's a successful actress, founder of The Honest Company, and mom to two adorable daughters (with a third child on the way!), but when it comes to cleaning her house, she straps on rubber gloves and cleans her toilet like the rest of us. So how does she maintain a spic-and-span home? Well, the first step is using all-natural cleaning products from The Honest Company, such as its new line of laundry, bathroom, and dishcare supplies. They're made with essential oils and without any synthetic fragrances. In short: you can feel good about using them. And did we mention the packaging? Jessica tapped her pal photographer Jin-Woo Prensena to make the products' exteriors so beautiful, you'll want to display them as part of your decor.

Check out Jessica's genius cleaning tips in her own words below - and make sure you read the last one, as we think every parent should abide by this genius cleaning strategy.

Use a Single Multitasking Product

"Bathrooms are probably one of the hardest areas to clean in the home. I've found that toilets, showers and sinks tend to accumulate tough stains, so it's important to choose the right product when tackling the job. I use Honest Bathroom Cleaner in Coastal Surf because I can use it on so many different parts of my bathroom. I find that using this, paired with a scrubbing brush, really helps me get into the nooks and crannies around the sink and the grout on tile."

Clean as You Go

"To make cleaning less overwhelming, make sure to clean as you go! For example, I try to wipe my kitchen surfaces after cooking. Built-up food splatters can be hard to remove if they've been sitting on your stovetop for a long time, so I try to clean up after every meal."

Do a Little Bit Every Day

"I also find it helpful to spend 10 minutes tidying up at the end of each day. Although it's only 10 minutes, this helps prevent big messes from piling up and makes cleaning with a busy schedule more manageable. Then, when it's time to do a big, deep clean, you don't have to spend as much time putting things back in their place and you can focus more on cleaning."

Selena Reacts to Her Grammy Win in a Recently Discovered 1994 Interview

Selena and her many appearances on commercials and ads recently became part of an ongoing American Enterprise exhibit at The National Museum of American History in Washington D.C., and while putting it together, the museum found this "lost" interview Selena gave in 1994. It's a clip from the program Tejano USA found on a TV camera donated by Univision to the museum. The footage was taken in April 1994, right before the Tejano singer performed at the Texas Live music festival sponsored by Coca Cola. In it, she spoke candidly about winning her 1993 Grammy for her album Live!.

"I had this huge knot in my stomach and then they announced the winner," she said smiling. "We haven't had time to celebrate because we've been working. It's a good problem to have though." She also talks about not being able to bring in a camera into the Grammys (so cute!) and her guest stint on the telenovela Dos Mujeres, Un Camino.

This Hormonal Cycle-Based Skincare Line Is What Pregnant and Breastfeeding Mamas Need

Ever notice how closely correlated your skin's condition and hormonal cycles are? So did the geniuses behind Amareta, an enlightened beauty brand that tailors its products to women's specific hormonal changes. "We believe that beauty routine should be customized to each phase of the hormonal cycle and tailored to specific skin needs to deliver best results," Amareta writes on its website. The specific phases Amareta addresses include menstruation, pregnancy, and breastfeeding.

As if thoughtfully designed skin care for your specific hormonal makeup wasn't impressive enough, Amareta also has a conscience; it won't put anything questionable into its products, banning over 40 ingredients many other natural skincare brands commonly use and keeping products free of hormone-disrupting chemicals and any synthetic preservatives or fragrances.

So what ingredients does Amareta include? Its Tender Care Breast Oil ($68) is made of sweet almond oil and evening primrose oil to soothe chapped and sensitive skin and ease pain from nursing. And the Grow Together Belly Oil ($36) is filled with skin-nourishing ingredients - to prevent stretch marks and support elasticity - and subtle fragrances to soothe expecting moms. It was even lauded by one reviewer as the only thing that helped her belly itching!

There are many skincare choices for expecting and postpartum mamas you can check out on Amareta's website, but if you can't decide which one is best, we suggest you go for one of its helpful packages, such as the 1st Trimester Set ($70) or the Nursing Set ($95). Genius, we know.

This Rose Quartz Highlighter Is the Prettiest Shade We've Ever Seen

A moment of silence, please, for all the other highlighter shades because we've found our now-favorite hue of all time: rose quartz. The shade, a cooler-toned cousin of rose gold, comes by way of Kora Organics, the beauty line created by model Miranda Kerr.

When we first spotted the Rose Quartz Luminizer ($28) on Instagram, the cream highlighter reminded us of everyone's favorite trendy shade, millennial pink. Upon closer inspection, we saw the soft hue is more multidimensional with silvery, frosty layers of color. Plus, it's packaged in the prettiest, gold-capped pot.

Beyond being aesthetically pleasing, the highlighter also stands out because it might as well double as skin care - it contains shea butter, coconut oil, jojoba seed oil, and sunflower seed oil. Skin gets both an immediate glow on the surface from makeup and a glow from the inside-out with organic ingredients.

While Kora is best known for its skincare products, this launch marks the brand's first venture into makeup. The rose quartz highlighter is the only product listed in the new "Natural Beauty" section on Kora's site, so there's likely more cosmetics to come. If they're anything like this highlighter beauty, we can't wait.

Ahead, see more photos of the rose quartz highlighter because it's so gosh darn pretty.

Bésame's New Snow White Line Will Make You the Fairest One of All

The holidays just got even more magical thanks to Bésame Cosmetics. The vintage-inspired makeup brand teamed up with Disney to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' release with the launch of the Disney Snow White - The 1937 Collection.

The massive collection includes lipsticks, eye shadow palettes, and blushes inspired by the original colors used in the film. Bésame founder Gabriela Hernandez based the hues on the Disney Studio Ink and colors created for the film, instead of the more vivid hues we see in remastered editions of the animated film.

Disney fans will go gaga for the attention to detail that Bésame included in the collection. The standout product in the collection is The 1937 Storybook Palette ($68), which was previously available for presale at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, CA. The beautifully designed palette looks like a storybook and includes a cream and gold slip cover and green satin bookmark. When you remove the slip cover and open the palette, you unveil a large mirror and an illustration of the princess herself.

If that wasn't cute enough, the next page has written directions on how to achieve the princess's look and a peek behind the scenes of the palette's production. As you flip to the next page, a table of contents is revealed. This tells you exactly which colors in the palette were used on Snow White in the film and where the shades are seen in the movie.

The shadows themselves are beautifully muted hues, and the collection includes enough neutrals to utilize the palette every day. There are 20 shades total, making this palette well worth the price tag. Keep reading to see all the products in the massive collection, and head to Bésame's website next week to shop the makeup and get the perfect gift for the Disney fan in your life.

Can Sweet Potatoes Help You Lose Weight?

If your exposure to sweet potatoes is limited to the Thanksgiving table or your favorite diner's healthier french fry option, now's the time to open your eyes to the weight-loss wonders of the tuber. Here are three reasons sweet potatoes help you drop pounds.

They're naturally sweet: No refined sugar overload here - sweet potatoes make for a healthy, lower-calorie treat. Satisfy any morning sweet/salty cravings with these sweet potato apple pancakes, and get your healthy dessert fill with these sweet potato desserts.

They regulate blood sugar: Sweet potatoes may have their fair share of carbs (about 33 grams per cup), but they contain a compound that increases levels of adiponectin, the blood-sugar regulating hormone, in the body. Sweet potatoes have a relatively low glycemic index rating (50), which can also help prevent blood sugar spikes after you eat. Regulated blood sugar levels can help get rid of those sugary cravings you get when your levels dip. And while studies have been conflicting, some research has shown that low-glycemic foods stay in your digestive tract longer, helping you control your appetite. To maintain sweet potatoes' low-glycemic properties, boil or steam them instead of roasting them (which destroys some of these properties).

They contain fiber: High-fiber foods are another foolproof way to control hunger. Fiber helps you feel fuller for longer, and one medium sweet potato (about one cup) contains four grams of the nutrient.

Sweet potatoes don't just help you trim your waistline, however. They're powerful sources of vitamin A, which helps boost immunity and promotes good eye, skin, and bone health, as well as high levels of anti-inflammatory antioxidants. Regardless of whether you're trying to lose weight or not, sweet potatoes' seemingly superfood status isn't a license to order all the sweet potato fries you want - a 2011 study found that those deep-fried sweet potato fries may not be as healthy as you think!

Here's What - and When - to Eat Before Working Out

When it comes to working out, it's important to feel energized, but it's not always as simple as grabbing a snack on your way out the door. Eating too close to exercise is a recipe for discomfort, but heading to the gym hungry isn't ideal either.

To learn how to maximize the potential of a workout, I spoke with nutritionist Heidi Skolnik, MS, CDN, FACSM, and author of Nutrient Timing for Peak Performance ($20) to find out what to eat and when before heading to the gym.

This Man's 90-Pound Weight Loss Came From Weight Watchers and the Support of Strong Women

Kevin is surrounded by two strong, determined women. His sister Lindsey and his girlfriend, Megan, (who also happen to be good friends!) decided to get healthy and lose weight together, and their positive influence ended up bringing out the best in Kevin, too. Seeing the success they had on their diet and exercise program, he wanted to lose weight, too.

Kevin: Before and After

Since starting Weight Watchers, Kevin has lost 90 pounds - 90 percent of his 100-pound goal. He feels healthy and confident, and for the first time in his life, he feels like he can sustain his lifestyle.

POPSUGAR: What made you decide to start your weight-loss journey?

Kevin Minnick: A few months after Megan and Lindsey started their Weight Watchers journey, we went to the horse races and I drank too much and ate too much and was beating myself up for how heavy I was. Megan had asked me to join Weight Watchers before but I declined. On the way home, she asked me again, and this time I agreed!

PS: What made you choose Weight Watchers?

KM: When I was in college, after I gained a lot of weight after I broke my neck in a motorcycle accident, I did a medically assisted weight-loss program. The medication worked well, but as soon as I stopped taking it, I gained the weight back because all the pill did was make me not hungry. I hadn't learned how to positively change my lifestyle.

After that, my go-to approach to losing weight was just eliminating fried foods. I was always able to do it for a week and then would find myself eating poorly soon after. Weight Watchers was a logical fit because Megan and Lindsey were already doing it with great success!

PS: What's your favorite way to work out?

KM: I love to get swole! My favorite way to work out is lifting, and I like to go to Spin class for cardio.

Weight Watchers has given me a blueprint for healthy living. For the first time, I finally understand how to eat responsibly and make better decisions.

I like to work out with friends! I'm into trying new things with friends like BeachBody workouts and barre classes! Trying new things with new people keeps it spicy and makes the act of working out more fun!

PS: What's your weekly exercise schedule?

KM: I lift three days a week and do cardio one to two days a week.

PS: How do you keep workouts exciting?

KM: Trying new things with new people keeps it spicy and makes the act of working out more fun!

PS: What was the first big difference, other than the number on the scale, that really made you feel proud and excited?

KM: We were visiting a friend out of town; I went to take a shower and was nervous about using the towels. I buy bath sheets at home so that they cover my whole body. I took a shower and was amazed that the towel fit - all the way around! I was also convinced it was working when I had to put holes in my belt. I've kept that belt and keep adding holes to remind myself of the progress I've made; to date there are eight new holes!

Kevin: Before

PS: How do you track your weight loss?

KM: I log my points in the Weight Watchers app! So many of the things I eat now, I've learned the SmartPoints of and can keep track in my head!

PS: What's a typical day of meals and snacks?

KM: Megan and I eat breakfast together every day. She will make me eggs and chicken sausage, or waffles or pancakes with peanut butter most mornings. I go out to eat for lunch; not wanting to give that up was my greatest hesitation to starting Weight Watchers but I've learned how to make better choices at my favorite restaurants and still eat out every day. For snacks, I'll have celery and ranch or an RX bar.

PS: Do you count calories?

KM: Nope; if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I try to be conscious about carbs and try to eat low carb most days. I do count Smart Points. I get 50 SmartPoints a day; usually I am within 10 SmartPoints of that.

PS: What are the healthy staples that are always in your fridge?

KM: Michelob Ultra, Powerade Zero, peanut butter Rx Bars, frozen waffles, Quest protein powder, peanut-butter-filled pretzels, Chomp sticks, chicken sausage.

Kevin: After

PS: How do you strategize for meals out?

KM: I look at the menu ahead of time if I can. I try to pick something that has a lot of protein and weigh out if it's worth indulging in things like french fries.

PS: Do you use a fitness tracker?

KM: I have an Apple Watch. I love it; I like competing with my friends and seeing myself hit my daily and weekly targets.

PS: What has it been like being on this journey with a loved one?

KM: Doing this with my girlfriend and sister has been great. They cheer me on when I need encouragement, push me to go to the gym when I don't want to, and meal plan and prep. Healthy competition is healthy.

I was always looking for a quick fix; I've learned those don't work or don't last.

PS: What was the biggest thing you learned on this journey?

KM: I was always looking for a quick fix; I've learned those don't work or don't last.

PS: What role did Weight Watchers play in your journey? Would you recommend it?

KM: Weight Watchers has given me a blueprint for healthy living. For the first time, I finally understand how to eat responsibly and make better decisions.

PS: What advice do you have for anyone starting out on a weight-loss journey?

KM: JUMP IN! Don't overthink it, just get started.

The Tastiest On-the-Go Dish at Disneyland That Will Fill You Up

The Bacon Mac & Cheese Cone ($8) at Cozy Cone Motel inside Disneyland's California Adventure is an Instagram sensation. So much so, we re-created the recipe at home. I had drooled over these cones for years before getting to try them for the first time a few weeks back. However, being the Texas girl that I am, I couldn't resist also ordering a Chili Cone Queso (50 cents cheaper than the mac) too. BTW, it's essentially a Frito pie inside a bread cone. My colleague Nicole and I took far too many shots of the oozing cones before taking our seats at the picnic tables and not-so-delicately tasting each one.

First off, the cone itself tastes like it's made from the same dough as the pretzel. It's like a slightly sweet brioche. It's a little bit on the stale and dry side, but I think that's because you have to eat it as soon as it comes out. Something I've noticed with Disneyland food is it's awesome when piping hot but much less desirable when cooled to room temperature.

As for the flavor of each cone, there was a clear winner but no loser! The bacon mac and cheese is awesome. It's more Velveeta cheese sauce than noodles, which is a big bonus, plus it's topped with crunchy (real!) bacon pieces. However, Nicole and I couldn't put down the Chili Cone Queso. The beef chili (also available vegetarian) is packed with beans and spices. The chips offer a nice textural contrast, and here's the best part: the bottom of the cone is filled with queso dip, plus there's more melted cheddar cheese on top. Before I polished off my half of the chili cone, Nicole stopped me and said, "I'm going to be real country and mix these two together. Try it and tell me it isn't the best decision." I followed suit and found myself extremely happy that I had trusted her with such a bizarre hybrid. But that's the beauty of Disneyland. You get to be a kid again, and occasionally, that leads to something magical.

It's Time to Settle This Once and For All: Are These Frosted Cookies Trash or Amazing?

You know those soft frosted sugar cookies from the bakery section in the grocery store? They're delicious, right? Or maybe you think they're a sad excuse for cookies and wouldn't dare eat one voluntarily. It turns out the sugary cookies are very polarizing, and a viral tweet has thrown the internet into a serious debate.

Twitter user taysux tweeted a photo of the cookies, saying, "It's that time of year again when stores sell these bottom of the barrel, flavorless piece of sh*t things they have the nerve to call cookies." With 14,000 "likes" and counting, it seems plenty of people agree with her extreme opinion of the dessert. Others, however, couldn't disagree more. "Delete this blasphemous tweet. They're the god of all cookies," one person tweeted in response. "These are a delicacy and should be treated as such," another tweeted.

The POPSUGAR office is just as torn as the internet on this highly controversial subject. "It's not even a good cookie, but you still eat it because it has a lot of nostalgic feelings. It's disgustingly delicious," POPSUGAR editor Victor Verdugo said. It's time to settle this debate once and for all: are these frosted sugar cookies from the grocery store disgusting or delicious?

The Evolution of Queen Máxima and King Willem-Alexander's Love

There's no denying it: Queen Máxima and King Willem-Alexander of The Netherlands are not only the happiest royal couple out there but also the chillest. It's been that way since they first announced their engagement to the public in 2001, after meeting in 1999 at the Seville Spring Fair in Spain. Even their wedding was a laid-back affair in comparison to other royal weddings, with Argentina-born Máxima in a simple but still stunning Valentino gown and smiling wide for the cameras.

From that moment on, the cuteness has only increased. There are endless photos of the royal couple happily walking arm in arm, laughing so hard it's contagious, and enjoying sweet and silly moments with their three daughters, Princesses Catharina-Amalia, Alexia, and Ariane. Scroll ahead to see Máxima and Willem-Alexander's love grow deeper and more fun as the years go by.

OMG, This Tarte Vault Is a Really, Really, Ridiculously Good Deal

If you're a makeup-lover, the holidays are a time of reaching for the stars, budget-wise. While your wish list might include more zeros than your paycheck does (fairy godmother, I want this 50-piece, $1,980 Tom Ford lipstick collection, and I want it now), it doesn't have to be that way. In fact, as Tarte's latest vault proves, budget beauty can be just as fabulous - and opulent.

Take, for instance, this Tartelette Vault ($100), which includes the Matte, In Bloom, and brand-new Toasted Palette, all for much less than the kits would retail separately.

If you're palette-obsessed, you probably live for the days you bring home another set of powders to add to your collection - well, imagine the delight in bringing home (or unwrapping) three! Two of the sets (Matte and In Bloom) are old favorites. Matte is somewhat of a "desert island" palette that features 12 versatile, creamy, and everyday shades.

In Bloom has the same amount of shades in similar hues but kicks things up a notch because these colors include shimmer, metallic, and darker options.

Since Toasted only just dropped earlier this month, perhaps you haven't had time to try it out just yet. But now is definitely the season for this collection of 12 burnt, fiery shades, as the shimmer options are perfect for holiday parties and feeling yourself this Fall.

Bought individually, these palettes would cost a total of $134. With this limited-edition vault, you can get things for a considerably cheaper price. We did the math, and with this deal, each shadow comes out to about $3. Of course, each of these kits will last you about two years, making the Tartelette Vault a pretty cost-effective option.

Looking fabulous for less than the price of your morning coffee? Happy holidays, indeed.

The 2018 POPSUGAR Reading Challenge Is Here!

Find a cozy nook, pull up a plush chair, and settle in with a steaming cup of something warm - the 2018 POPSUGAR Reading Challenge is here! This year, there are 40 book prompts to broaden your reading scope and push you to actually accomplish your New Year's resolution to read more in 2018. If you're really hardcore and breeze through the main list, there are an additional 10 book prompts in the "advanced" section. We're especially excited about this year's creative new batch of prompts, which include "true crime," "a book by a female author who uses a male pseudonym," and "a book about a villain or antihero."

Before you stress about tackling all 50 books, just remember that the point of the reading challenge is to push yourself to diversify your reading (hey, we all get stuck in a genre rut!) and just have fun with it. And if you read more books in 2018 than in 2017, even better. The best part? You may even discover a new favorite book along the way!

So you've decided to take the reading challenge - what now? We'd suggest joining this Goodreads group, which is made up of more than 8,000 readers who participate in the POPSUGAR Reading Challenge every year. In addition to keeping you accountable, the group's impressively well-read and supportive members swap book ideas for the prompts and discuss their favorite (and least favorite) reads throughout the year. You'll also be able to track which books you've read and rate them on the site.

Download our printable list here (or our advanced list here), checking off the books as you go, and pin the handy graphic below for reference. Share your progress on Instagram with #popsugarreadingchallenge!

Spoiler alert: we got a little meta. So for the prompt to choose your favorite prompt from past challenges, here they are for reference: 2015, 2016, 2017.

This Is How All Your Favorite Chefs Make Gravy

A perfectly cooked Thanksgiving turkey is nothing without gravy, but somehow the sauce is always the hardest to master. If you have suffered from runny or lumpy gravy far too long and are determined to make this your year of a standout gravy, look no further than these foolproof recipes. We've turned to some of your favorite celebrity chefs and Food Network personalities for their tried-and-true gravy recipes, and we promise they'll turn you into a total pro.

Alton Brown: With a Secret Ingredient

Alton Brown's best gravy ever doesn't just call for chicken stock; it calls for wine, too. You might think that white wine would go with turkey gravy, but Alton goes with red wine instead for the rich flavor that it adds to the hearty gravy. The stock and wine work together to pull the juicy bits of turkey from the bottom of the roasting pan, and the liquid reduces to form a deeply colored, gorgeous sauce. In the recipe, Alton reminds his readers, "Remember, your gravy should be slightly thin in the pan as it will thicken once you serve it."

Giada De Laurentiis: A Hint of Sophistication

Usually it's Mario Batali who adds truffle to everything, but when it comes to turkey gravy, Giada's on board. Giada's crispy truffled turkey is slathered in truffle butter, and the accompanying gravy gets a dash of truffle salt to enhance the earthy flavor even more.

Ina Garten: Booze Makes It Better

Don't forget to pick up a bottle of brandy or Cognac if you plan on making Ina Garten's homemade gravy. Ina sweats onions in a generous amount of butter before adding flour, salt, pepper, and chicken stock. Things take an interesting (and delicious) turn when Cognac or brandy and white wine join the party, and a tablespoon of heavy cream rounds it all out and delivers a smooth consistency.

Tyler Florence: Tons of Garlic and Herbs

Chef Tyler Florence is a huge fan of garlic and herbs (for good reason), and his roasted turkey gravy recipe makes a strong case for the flavor combination. The flavor-packed gravy calls for a whole head of garlic, the classic mirepoix (onion, carrot, and celery), and plenty of fresh herbs like sage, thyme, and parsley. For a truly memorable meal, pair it with Tyler Florence's epic mashed potatoes.

Gordon Ramsay: With a Touch of Crunch

You wouldn't expect Gordon Ramsay's gravy recipe to be basic, and it's anything but. Gordon's recipe calls for fresh tomatoes that simmer with onions, bacon, dry cider, and stock until all the tomatoes have softened and the flavors have married. Once the gravy has reduced and thickened, chopped walnuts get added to the mix for a crunchy contrast to the soft turkey pieces.

17 Photos That Prove Blonde Works on Every Skintone

We tend to be so attached to our hair that even the merest cut or trim can spark months of mourning until the lost inches grow back. That's even more true when it comes to color. Despite the popularity of bright hair color trends inspired by everything from Fruity Pebbles to candy floss, the idea of going blonde is still a bold move many shy away from. If you're on the fence about adopting the bold color, let your inhibitions go, and let the following beauties inspire you to become a bottle blonde.

4 Signs You're Overtraining - and How That Negatively Impacts Your Goals

Hard work pays off - but working harder instead of smarter doesn't. If you've been putting in hours of exercise and not seeing the results you want, you could be overtraining.

When you start seeing results - or want to keep results going - it's natural to want to turn it up a notch. It's a delicate balance, though. Look out for these telltale signs that you're overtraining. Knowing when to back off can prevent injury and long-term damage to your health and well-being. We spoke with Youfit Health Club's national director of fitness, Raphael Konforti, to help identify those cues we may be missing.

You're Training Hard but Not Seeing Results

The most frustrating part of overtraining is that your results fade away like the colors in your favorite shirt. You need to give your body time to rest from any intense regimen.

"Recovery is where the magic happens," Konforti said. "Think of training and recovery as your bank account. Every time you exercise, you're taking money out, and if you don't save up with recovery time, you're going to run out of money and results." Changes in your body have a huge impact from what happens after your workouts - your sleep, your rest, and your nutrition all play a part in helping you reach your goals.

You're Low on Energy

Are you dragging yourself out of bed every morning? We're not talking about suffering from a long night out or being a self-proclaimed night owl here. "If you start to notice yourself really struggling to wake up and not having energy throughout the day, you're likely overtraining," Konforti told us. "Drinking an extra cup of coffee - or three? That's another telltale sign." He also explained that this isn't something you experience one day and then not the next. If you feel this way for a week or more, look at scaling back your workouts to replenish your energy.

Aches and Pains

It hurts. Everything! If you hear yourself saying that, stop and check in to see if there's a reason you should feel all those aches and pains. "It's normal to feel sore, but joint aches like the ankles, knees, and shoulders aren't normal. Muscles recover faster than connective tissue - like tendons and ligaments - so overtraining can cause those vital connective tissues to wear out," Konforti said. Chronic pain feeling a bit sore from a workout is also a cause for concern, as it may indicate a strain - or something worse. Additionally, if you feel your immune system breaking down, it's another sign that you're putting too much strain on your body.

Irregular Heart Rate

The truth lies within your heart - literally. One of the best ways to truly know if you've overtrained is by checking your resting heart rate. If you're overtraining, you'll notice that it's increased. According to Konforti, it's best to measure your resting heart rate right when you wake up and to count your beats for one minute. Do this for a couple days to get a baseline measurement. Then, if you feel like you're overtraining, take your heart rate the following morning. If it's a noticeable few beats higher per minute, you'll want to kick back, put on your slippers, and relax so your body can catch up.

What If I'm Overtraining?

If you feel like you may be going too hard, taking immediate action is important. Konforti recommends not stopping exercise altogether but modifying. "Try decreasing the amount of sets you do and taking down the intensity of your workouts," he said. "Focus on light cardio and recovery work like foam rolling and yoga to give your body time to rebuild and get back to normal." How long you need to back off all depends on how hard you pushed yourself before. Usually one to two weeks is enough to get you back on track.
