This Gretchen Grundler Body Paint Will Amaze You With Nostalgia
Gretchen Grundler Transformation! My favourite recess character! from MakeupAddiction
If you grew up in the early aughts, chances are Gretchen Grundler is your favorite fictional know-it-all. The Recess character and yo-yo enthusiast was practically an icon of preteen feminism due to her unabashed intellect and quietly badass nature. If you recall, girlfriend was smarter than most of her teachers.
One Redditor who goes by the handle @summakeup just did a makeup look that's worthy of Gretchen's near-perfection. After seeing this crazy-good bodypainting, you'll probably feel very nostalgic.
According to @summakeup, this extremely realistic look took about three to four hours to accomplish. While the photo might make you do a double take at first, zoom in and try to spot any editing . . . you won't be able to find it.
As @summakeup wrote in the comments section of her post, one of her biggest tricks for completing this look includes using black paint to "block out areas" she doesn't need, and shooting her final photos in front of a black backdrop. That all factors into achieving Gretchen's absurdly skinny cartoon frame.
We're in total awe of this transformation, and will keep our eyes peeled for more of @summakeup's work - who wouldn't love to see a Helga G. Pataki look?
Becca's New Highlighter Palette Just Dropped - Here's How to Use It
Chances are, we don't need to tell you how great Becca's highlighters are. From its mini powders to its shiny lip glosses, the beauty-girl-favorite brand is beloved for giving users an out-of-this-world glow. So get out your wallets, because there's a new, limited-edition Becca palette in town - and it's going to light you up something fierce.
But as with adding any new release into your rotation, there may be a learning curve. The Becca Light Waves Palette ($34), which includes three Shimmering Skin Perfectors, might take a little getting used to. The hues are Moonstone, a gold; Prismatic Amethyst, a lavender; and the brand-new, exclusive-to-Light Waves Pink Sapphire, a chrome peach.
How, exactly, do you get these powders to look as pretty on your face as the colors do in the pans? Becca Global Style Director Kerry Cole gave us some ideas for getting the most out of Light Waves. According to Cole, Moonstone looks great when applied wet on the cheekbones or as a base eye shadow coat. She also loves layering Prismatic Amethyst over a colored lip gloss or swiping it over the tip of a wet coat of mascara for a frosty, textured lash look. Cole recommends using the newbie Pink Sapphire as a topcoat for your favorite blush. She also advised applying it over a clear lip gloss, because it omits a twinkling pop of pink that's the stuff Winter princess dreams are made of.
Of course, this is all just a road map; the final look is up to you, and (as always) experimentation is encouraged! But you won't be able to play around forever - like we said, this palette is limited edition, so sweep it up while you can.
What's the Real Deal With Hydroquinone?
Hydroquinone has become pretty controversial in the beauty world. One minute, it's the miracle ingredient for clearing up dark spots, and the next, it's supposedly carcinogenic. It's hard for anything to be deemed trustworthy and effective once labeled as a cancer causer. Yet, through all the fuss, experts have maintained that hydroquinone remains the gold standard for erasing hyperpigmentation and age spots. So in all that toxic talk, what's the truth? We asked three experts to weigh in.
Why all the fuss?
"Much of this controversy stems from its ban in South Africa due to side effects," explained Sejal Shah, NYC cosmetic dermatologist and founder of SmarterSkin Dermatology. "Subsequently, other countries banned hydroquinone. It turns out that the questionable products in South Africa contained mercury and other contaminants, which more likely account for side effects being seen."
Dr. Shah further explained that there have been reports of hydroquinone causing cancer in mice when administered in high doses orally, but there are no studies to date showing that this happens in humans and with a topical application. "When properly formulated and used, hydroquinone can be extremely safe and effective, and we have numerous studies confirming this," Shah added.
Does it bleach skin?
Rachel Roff, a medical esthetician and founder of Urban Skin Rx, quickly squashed this myth. "When used within a safe strength, hydroquinone doesn't bleach someone's natural skin tone. It evens out the skin," Roff said. While it may not be proven to cause cancer, if used incorrectly, it can leave skin vulnerable to excessive sun exposure, which could mean a higher risk of skin cancer and sunburn.
"As a general known fact, side effects of skin bleaching, regardless of product or ingredient, include skin irritation and sun sensitivity," dermatologist Dendy Engelman said. There's also a condition called ochronosis, where the skin darkens. This reaction is mainly associated with high concentrations of hydroquinone that has been used for prolonged periods of time.
When do you need hydroquinone?
The main purpose of hydroquinone in skin care is as a lightening agent. "Skin lightening is performed for a variety of reasons, including sun damage. Melanin (aka pigment) is produced by skin cells called melanocytes, and various topical creams are used to reduce the amount of pigment that is produced to brighten the skin," Engelman said. These include hydroquinone, which is the most common, botanical extracts, and antioxidants.
How do you use it safely?
A hydroquinone regimen should be used for no more than three to four months at a time, followed by a minimum of two months off. After the two months, if hyperpigmentation is still an issue, you can return to using hydroquinone for another three- to four-month period.
What if you just can't get behind hydroquinone?
While the experts agree that nothing works on dark spots quite as fast as hydroquinone does, there are ingredients that are just as effective. It may take longer to see results, but natural solutions like kojic acid, alpha arbutin, niacinamide, and vitamin C can help even out your skin. Something like SkinMedica Lytera 2.0, a pigment-correcting serum that is retinol- and hydroquinone-free, balances the skin's melanin production and resists triggers that cause discoloration.

Whey Protein Powder Is Way Better For You - Here's Why
We love us some protein powder - of all kinds! We use it for baking, making pancakes, and whipping up classic shakes and smoothies to give our bodies that extra boost of satiating and muscle-building power. But are some protein powders better than others?
While Clif Bar hosted us in Kona, HI, last week for the Ironman World Championships, we had the chance to meet countless phenomenal endurance athletes who know a thing or two about sports nutrition and protein. Most expert among them all was Clif's dietitian and triathlon coach Marni Sumbal, MS, RD, CSSD, LD/N - she's an 11-time Ironman. So, yeah, she knows what she's talking about.
We had so many questions for Marni, but one of the chief things that stuck out from our conversation was her tip about whey protein and the fact that it's actually way better for your body than other forms of protein powder (especially for muscle building and recovery). If you're able to consume whey (i.e., you're not vegan), you should opt for it whenever possible. Here's why.
- It's a complete protein. This means "it contains all essential and nonessential amino acids (20 amino acids)." BCAAs for recovery? Check!
- It's very low in lactose. Marni mentioned that even if you're lactose intolerant, you should still be able to have whey protein. Despite the fact that it comes from animal protein, it's extremely low in digestion-irritating lactose.
- Your body can use all of it. Whey protein "ranks highest on the bioavailability list," said Marni. "This means that the body can make use of 100 percent of the amino acids found in whey protein." This also means . . .
- Your body CAN'T use 100 percent of some other forms of protein. She went on to explain that not all proteins are this readily available for your body to absorb. "Because the digestive system absorbs some proteins better than others and some proteins have a larger amino acid profile than others, we can say that the protein in whey protein goes a long way in terms of its role in the body for muscles, energy, lean muscle mass, bones, etc."
- You might not be getting your full serving without whey. Because other proteins aren't as easily absorbed by your body, you're actually getting less protein than what the label might indicate. When you eat protein, the body has to use energy to break it down in order to absorb it. "So if the serving size says 15 grams of protein, you may end up only absorbing 10-13 grams of protein instead of the 15 grams marketed on the label," she said. "But with whey protein being a fast digesting protein, you can quickly absorb all of the amino acids that your body needs to promote rebuilding muscle tissue and to meet daily amino acid needs. Whey protein ranks highest [in bioavailability] whereas peanuts are lower on the list in terms of bioavailability."
So are plant proteins bad? Not at all. "According to research, you can get a similar amount of protein from pea or soy protein compared to whey, but the absorption isn't as efficient," she told us. "There's nothing wrong with pea or soy protein in terms of a plant-based protein option if it's the only option." But if you're able to eat whey, she recommends it!
This Is the Best Diet to Go On (According to Harvard Researchers)
If you want to lose weight, what's on your plate is often more important than the minutes you spend in the gym. And if you want to see the most change, a 2015 study from Harvard says you should be cutting carbs, not fat.
For the study, published in PLoS One, researchers from Harvard and Brigham and Women's Hospital reviewed 53 randomized trials of over 68,000 patients who had been assigned to either low-fat or low-carb diets. They found that low-carb diets were consistently better at helping patients lose weight than low-fat diets; the participants on the low-carb diets lost 2.5 pounds more than those on low-fat diets, with the average weight loss among all groups at about six pounds.
This latest study on the weight-loss benefits of a low-carb diet adds further evidence that if you want to lose weight, ditching bread - not olive oil - can help you see success. Another recent study, for example, showed that dieters who ate fewer than 40 grams of carbohydrates per day lost about eight pounds more than dieters who were put on a low-fat diet. Other studies have shown that high-carb diets may be the real heart-disease culprit, not saturated fat. All in all, this new review is a good reminder that if you want to lose weight, you should choose a diet rich in healthy fats, lean proteins, and fresh produce. Of course, not all fats are created equal - find out which healthy fats you should be incorporating into your diet here.

The Biggest Misconception About Keto, Debunked By a Doctor
The keto diet is still hotly contested, but clinical nutritionist Dr. Josh Axe, DNM, DC, CNC chalks a lot of that up to one giant misconception: "It's not just butter and bacon."
Though it is a very high-fat diet (up to 80 percent of your calories come from fat!), Dr. Axe noted that most people don't understand how to eat healthy with that macronutrient distribution (and thus end up defaulting to butter and bacon).
While grass-fed butter is still a good fat source, he also recommends seeking healthy fats from natural sources like avocados and nuts. And while salad isn't the first thing to come to mind when you think "keto diet," Dr. Axe suggests "loading up on vegetables and water," while eating "some meat." He especially noted that vegetables, herbs, and greens are of the utmost importance, and are often neglected on the diet.
He told POPSUGAR that he emphasizes the importance of alkaline foods while in ketosis. "I have my clients on the ketogenic diet eat things like bone broth, mixes of veggie juice powder, or organic super green powder, veggies without sugar, celery, cucumber, spinach, turmeric . . . lots of cilantro and parsley. These are all really, really alkaline." This is to balance the acidity and the pH of your body while in ketosis so you can sustain the diet for a few months in a healthy way.

How the Gym Saved Me From My Depression
The past year has tested every part of my being and reached into just about every corner of my world. Whether it was work, my divorce, or parenthood, this year has been a marathon of events in which the bottom line always required that I just keep on running . . . or swimming. Depends on your sport of choice. Wink.
I was moving. I was dealing with a difficult person. A child undergoing many changes. Job changes. Health issues. Money issues. It felt like once one thing had resolved, another major issue was waiting for me right on deck. There were certain times in which I was so stressed, eating was almost impossible. My stomach decided to take on all of my stresses for my brain, and I just wasn't myself.
I wondered quite a few times why this was happening. But as time has gone on, I have realized that no matter the reason, I am getting stronger and tougher, mentally and physically.
After my Summer of "no food," I finally felt well enough and looked to the gym with open arms; it was like I was reuniting with a lover. The gym had always been a great source of stress relief and fun for me, and so I was looking forward to getting back to "picking things up and putting things down."
It wasn't just that working out helped increase those happy, feel-good hormones in my mind. It wasn't just that being able to do real push-ups for the first time in my life got me into shape.
The gym saved me from succumbing to depression. It kept me from giving up.
Even when I couldn't look at my bank account without thinking, "How am I going to make this month?," I could go in the gym and do squats on the BOSU and side planks with hip dips.
Even when it felt as if I knew nobody in my town where my daughter and I had moved to, I knew how to reverse lunge with a medicine ball like no other.
Even when I felt as if neither my daughter nor myself would adjust to our move, I could learn to do plank with back rows and triceps kickbacks.
Even if I had no Saturday night date or no fun Sunday plans while my daughter was off with her dad, I had a date to run three miles. I had a date to make a HIIT class.
Although I may have felt alone and powerless to change many of the things that upset me in my life, I could change how my body felt and looked. I could go from just doing simple bicep curls to doing bicep curls to a shoulder press on a BOSU, like that. I could go from planking for 30 seconds to a full minute.
I didn't have the power to change all of my circumstances, but at the gym, I had the power to change just about anything and everything.
I had the power to change my body . . . and my brain. My outlook.
The gym . . . my workouts . . . they were and, in many ways, are the one place in which I can call the shots totally and reap all the benefits.
In addition to ballet, having one place in which I could just walk away from my stresses and worries helped me to believe that even when things are very bad, they don't last forever. That tough times make for tough people. That this too shall pass. That there is a light at the end of the tunnel. That I can do anything, even burpees (my utterly least favorite exercise), for 30 seconds and counting. That the pain won't last forever, but the rewards of my hard work, perseverance, and dedication to making things better will last with me for a lifetime.
That these rewards are also my daughter's rewards. That my daughter has seen how her mom commits to her health. When she asked me one day why I wanted to go to the gym in the first place, I told her simply, "Mom feels better when she exercises. It makes my brain, body, and heart happy."
"That's good Mommy," she smiled.
Showing her that her mom values caring for herself will pay off down the line.
A year later, she is happier and I am happier. And sometimes, we do squats together, and even burpees, but I never let on how much I really do hate those burpees.

Here's the Dreamy Soundtrack For Call Me by Your Name - And How it Came Together
Call Me by Your Name has been a festival favorite this year (and will likely become an award season favorite too), and the beauty of the film goes beyond the moving performances of the cast. The Italian setting provides a gorgeous backdrop for the film, which takes place in 1983 and chronicles the romance of 17-year-old Elio (Timothée Chalamet) and 24-year-old Oliver (Armie Hammer). The film also has a memorable, dreamy soundtrack, combining classical music, songs from Sufjan Stevens (including two new songs), and recognizable hits from the '80s (most notably, "Love My Way" by The Psychedelic Furs). During a Q&A at the Toronto Film Festival, director Luca Guadagnino discussed how he chose the music for the film and why Sufjan Stevens almost passed on it entirely.
- On how he approached incorporating music in the film: "The temptation is always to not put music in the movie, and that's coming from me, and I put a lot of music in my films. But in this case, basically, the beginning of everything was Elio and his way of being a musician. Elio is a genius pianist. And there is no doubt that in growing up, he will become a pianist. Him being a pianist was important for the classical music to play in the film. So we went into the canon of the piano music that he's playing in the film - Bach, Debussy - and then we go into the music of the period of the film. Then, of course, we wanted to be immersed in the period, 1983, the Summer, the Summer heat, so we started on what were the hits in Italy at the time. What was playing on the radio? What was in heavy rotation on the radio? And it was a pleasure because a lot of these songs were part of my upbringing."
- On how Sufjan Stevens became involved: "I thought a voice that was external, of narration, could be great. I thought, 'why don't we have a chronicler, who opens and closes the movie with a thought of introduction and epilogue?' I thought it would be cool if we had not an actor, but a musician. And I love Sufjan, so I approached him for that. And he said, 'forget about it, it's never gonna happen.' So I said, 'OK, what about a song that can be, in a way, playing like that? A song of a musician of today telling the story of someone back in the '80s?' And then he really surprised us, because a couple of months later, when we were shooting, I got an email from his management. And Sufjan not only made a song, but he made two. And also, he made an adaptation for the piano of his beautiful 'Futile Devices.'"

The 1 Change I Made to Cure 10 Years of Feeling Bloated
Entering college was supposed to be all bliss and excitement, but I had such terrible digestive issues, I wouldn't dare stray far from my dorm bathroom. It was so embarrassing, feeling so bloated and being so gassy, the only person I could confide in was, of course, my mother. In her thick Long Island, NY, accent she said, "Aww, yaw just nervous. You'll feel bettah soon."
But months later, nothing had changed. I felt happier at college than I'd ever felt in my entire life and I was far from nervous. I still felt like sh*t, though. As a vegetarian who lived on cheese, I was lactose intolerant in a major way, so giving up dairy helped. I even gave up gluten but pretty much felt the same - tired and bloated. Every time I ate, I had digestive pains. Plus, I thought being a gluten-free vegetarian would help me drop my college weight gain, but I was actually gaining more weight.
Why? Gluten-free baked goods, breads, pastas, and vegan ice cream and cookies were part of my daily diet, so no wonder the scale numbers were going up. And even after giving up gluten for 10 years, my stomach was still a bloated mess. It wasn't until I ditched the processed junk and started eating more salads, roasted veggies, soups, beans, whole grains, and fruits that I noticed the enormous difference I had been hoping for. I felt energized and lighter, and, most importantly, I had no more belly bloat. I mean NONE. I even started introducing a little gluten back into my diet and still felt amazing.
The cure? Fiber. I wasn't eating close to enough on my junk-food gluten-free, vegetarian diet. I started focusing on getting at least 25 to 30 grams a day, which worked out to at least eight grams at each meal and three to four grams for each of my two snacks. To ensure I get my fill, I add ground flaxseed and berries to my smoothies and baked goods, chia seeds to my overnight oats, use avocado when I make pesto pasta, and add beans, quinoa, and sunflower seeds to my salads.
I was not only free from the chains of feeling bloated, but eating more fiber filled me up and I wasn't nearly as hungry as I had been, which helped me eat fewer daily calories, and in, turn lose weight. Talk about a major win-win, people!
American diets tend to focus on getting more protein and eating fewer carbs, so if you find that you're feeling bloated, gassy, and you can't remember the last time you pooped, check your fiber intake! As a general rule of thumb, make sure to get fiber every time you eat, whether it's through veggies, fruits, nuts and seeds, or whole grains. Edible Cookie Dough Bars Exist, So We Want 50 Cases, Please
Stop it, world! We can't take it! We can only handle so much amazing cookie dough news in one year, and we thought we'd already hit the threshold with edible Oreo cookie dough. When The Junk Food Aisle discovered edible cookie dough in bar form, it seemed too good to be true - but we've done our research, and it's all real, baby!
These delectable little miracles come courtesy of Soozie's Doozies, which offers five flavors of edible cookie dough bar: Peanut Butter Milk Chocolate, White Chocolate Peanut Butter Macadamia, Birthday Cake, Candie-Coated Chocolate, and Chocolate Chip. While The Junk Food Aisle found the bars at Midwest grocery chain Meijer for $2 each, the Soozie's Doozies brand is also carried at stores like Whole Foods, Ralph's, Kroger, and Food 4 Less (check out the store locator). Read up on the different flavors here, then look out for the dough bars on shelves near you!
12 Flamin' Hot Cheetos Memes You'll Understand Perhaps a Little Too Well
Nothing brings a group of people together like their shared love for Flamin' Hot Cheetos. Calling the snack a cult favorite is an understatement with fans often using social media help to find their favorite kind if they come across an empty shelf at their nearest supermarket. The recipe, which uses chili to spice up a regular cheesy Cheeto, was created by a Mexican-American janitor (not all heroes wear capes, you know?), which makes some Latinx even more fond of the crunchy bite.
If your love for Flamin' Hot Cheetos beats strong, these memes will be perhaps a little too relatable. Get ready to laugh out loud.
10 Things INTJ Personality Types Hate With a Burning Passion
I f*cking hate small talk. I've been told by loved ones that I'm "almost too logical," always thinking with my head over my heart, and I admit I'm a bit of a perfectionist. Self-awareness is important to me, so I've always recognized these traits in myself, but it wasn't until I took the Myers-Briggs test that I realized there's a name that describes my personality: INTJ. One of the 16 personality types, the acronym's meaning stands for introvert (I), intuitive (N), thinking (T), and judging (J). I'm not usually one for seemingly arbitrary advice from things like horoscopes (reading my Virgo relationship forecast for the month doesn't really do it for me), but the well-researched psychology behind this popular personality test hooked me. After marveling at the results and nodding my head at every single INTJ personality trait, I felt I got to know myself better and was reminded of the things that make me me.
"To outsiders, INTJs may appear to project an aura of 'definiteness,' of self-confidence. This self-confidence, sometimes mistaken for simple arrogance by the less decisive, is actually of a very specific rather than a general nature," the results of my personality quiz stated. Simply put, INTJs know what they like and don't like. And they definitely know what they hate. If you're a fellow INTJ (or hoping to better understand one), here are some things that they really, really hate.
- Small talk. Did I mention I f*cking hate small talk? People with whom I've shared elevators and Lyft rides, I'm sure you're all great, but I don't care how you're doing, how you feel about the weather finally cooling down, or how long you've lived in the city. The trivial nature of these conversations makes me cringe, and I'd rather remain absorbed in my music or my peace and quiet. "White lies and small talk are hard enough as it is for a type that craves truth and depth, but INTJs may go so far as to see many social conventions as downright stupid," says 16 Personalities.
- Flakiness. INTJs are reliable, and when they say they're going to be somewhere, they'll be there. Probably a little early. They have no patience for people who flake out at the last minute on plans or tasks with a vague excuse.
- Blind obedience. It's not that INTJs are outright rule-breakers, they just need to know why certain rules exist before taking them seriously. INTJs' logical minds are always at work, and they aren't afraid to question tradition.
- Irrational assumptions. INTJs don't quickly jump to conclusions, and they're often frustrated with people who do. For example, INTJs will not assume the worst in a situation and won't worry until they are given a concrete reason to do so. The "T" in our personality type means we make decisions through thinking rather than feeling (F).
- Close-mindedness. Being so attached to rational thinking means that INTJs, while confident in their own opinions, are always open to hearing other perspectives. They get frustrated with people whose narrow-mindedness hinders their ability to think with empathy.
- Meaningless friendships. INTJs would rather have a small group of close friends than a large circle of acquaintances. It means more to them to have a core support system and a short list of people they truly care about than constantly getting invitations to hang out with people who don't provide a fulfilling relationship. It's about quality vs. quantity for them.
- Inefficient planning. INTJs don't appreciate poor planning or indecisiveness. "Going with the flow" isn't exactly a strong suit because they like the feeling of being prepared.
- Crowds. While a huge music festival or crowded bar might sound like the ideal night out to some people, INTJs would rather be at home in comfy clothes with a good book.
- Lazy work ethics. INTJs are not familiar with the concept of giving anything less than 100 percent to their jobs (even if it's a job they're not necessarily passionate about). They know their strengths, and they want to make sure other people can see them, too - this is where their perfectionism comes through. Slacking is not in their vocabulary, and they love meeting their goals.
- The spotlight. Although INTJs are confident, they would rather not be the center of attention. According to 16 Personalities, "It is often best for them to remain where they are comfortable - out of the spotlight - where the natural confidence can serve as its own beacon, attracting people of similar temperament and interests."

This Woman Chops Up Lush Bubble Bombs For Fun, and I Am Not OK
After a long, arduous day, there's nothing I look forward to more than coming home, drawing a bath, grabbing some Lush bombs, and . . . slicing the things to pieces?! Just kidding - like most Lushies, I treat my bath bombs with more care and tenderness than I've shown some family members.
But, as Cosmopolitan reports, one woman named Therosequeenn has taken to Instagram to slice and dice Lush products as if she were Julia gosh darn Child. And, predictably, the Internet cannot handle it.
Therosequeenn describes herself as a "professional Lush enthusiast" (same, girl) and has transformed her feed into a barrage of Bubble Bar carnage in dedication of this pursuit.
This behavior understandably irks those who prefer to keep their products intact - as one commenter put it, "Why do you have to do this?"
But to most of Therosequeenn's followers, the videos are pure, satisfying bliss. "Such fresh rhythmic slices," a fan wrote of her pulling a knife on Plum Snow Bubble Bar ($13).
Going ham on beauty products seems to be quite the trend recently - see this vlogger, who sets Fenty Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter on fire in her spare time. Whether you think these videos induce relaxing, ASMR vibes down in your soul or utter sadness at the thought of destroying your favorite goodies, we dare you to look away at this hypnotizing ritual.

Here's What INFJs Absolutely Must Have in Order to Be Happy
INFJs are the rarest Myers Briggs personality type, so it should come as no surprise that their needs and wants are a bit specific. In order to be happy, this special type must have certain important things (and people) in their lives. We require our space (in a major way), a creative outlet, and people who we can truly trust. If you're an INFJ and you're seeking ways to be a happier version of yourself, then it's essential to understand your personality, as well as the things you do and do not want in your life in order to optimize your wellness. Here are the things INFJs love and ways they find happiness.
1. A creative outlet.
INFJs have vivid imaginations and need a creative outlet to be happy. You'll often find people with this personality type in creative jobs that also put an emphasis on caring for others; they are writers, counselors, psychologists, social workers, artists, and musicians. Having creative outlets, whether professional or personal (or both!), is essential to who INFJs are, and therefore a crucial part of their well-being.
2. Space!
As introverts, the key way that INFJs recharge is through alone time. They find happiness within themselves, but they can't do so if they're distracted by other people and energies around them. Because INFJs are often empaths who absorb the energy of others, they must be alone in order to center themselves and find their own inner joy.
3. Meaningful relationships.
Small talk and fake friends are two of the things INFJs hate the most in the world. They seek deep connections that take cultivation and time. INFJs build trust with a very small group of people, and they cherish those relationships above all else. Acquaintances don't bring them happiness: genuine friendships and strong bonds do.
4. Helping others.
With an inherent sense of idealism and morality, INFJs are often happiest when they are helping others. The type, nicknamed "the advocate," is known for fighting for what they believe in and working to ensure the well-being and equality of others. They have strong convictions and take these beliefs very seriously and feel it's their duty to do what is right. INFJs don't just dream about a better world. Their characteristic determination leads them to go out and make it so.
5. Being understood.
For an INFJ, being misunderstood is one of the most frustrating things they can experience, but because of their personalities, it can actually happen quite often. They seek deep connections with others and are extremely perceptive. However, many traits of the INFJ personality type (like the fact that they are both logical and emotional) are conflicting, which can make understanding where they're coming from hard for others. That being said, when they do feel that someone does understand them (or is at least trying to!), it brings a sense of peace to their overly analytical minds.
6. Staying true to their passions.
Determined, idealistic, and passionate. When INFJs believe in something important, they can and will pursue that goal. It goes against their nature to settle (they're perfectionists, after all) so this personality type finds happiness in the action of following their hearts and staying true to their convictions. Whether it be in the workplace or in life, INFJs are fueled and driven by their passions.
7. Reflection and self-care.
As overthinkers, perfectionists, and chronic "helpers," INFJs must remember that in order to be happy, they must also take care of themselves. Time for reflection, quiet, and space to recharge is extremely important, though often forgotten about. Passionate and sensitive, INFJs have a tendency to burn themselves out easily. It's essential to this personality type's happiness that they practice self-care frequently to avoid stress and feeling overwhelmed.

Weed Candles Are a Real Thing, and They're Awesome
Looking for a new way to unwind? Kushed Candles wants you to relax by lighting one of its scented candles - but this isn't your usual aromatherapy. Cannabis essential oil is the base of its fragrant blends. Yes, we mean cannabis as in marijuana. "At Kushed, we wanted to create fragrances that were sexy and energizing, soothing and peaceful. Scents that would clear the mind and ease tension," it writes on its website. And, it clarifies, this isn't the dank stench you might typically associate with weed, writing, "the aroma of cannabis essential oil is probably not what you might imagine. Earthy, peppery and faintly sweet, its scent is alluring and sensual."
The cannabis oil is blended with other exotic essential oils in the hand-poured soy wax candles to create unique relaxing scents, including Sadhu, which blends warm sandalwood and fruity plumeria; CaliforniaDream which has earthy patchouli and sweet tuberose; and the more traditional LavenderKush, which layers atop cannabis with peaceful lavender and sage. For the purist, there's the signature QueenGreen made of fresh cut cannabis delicately infused with hints of ylang ylang, rosewood, and mandarin. Curious? You can head to Kushed Candles' website to pick your favorite fragrance from three different glass jar sizes and one travel tin ranging in price from $16-$48. From there, all that's left to do is get lit.
Outlander: Actor John Bell Spills on Ian's Kidnapping and What's Next (a Snake Pit!)
Lost in all the kerfuffle over Jamie's "First Wife" and angry second wife in the latest Outlander episode is the fact that young Ian is turning into a man before our very eyes. He's been off doing very grown-up things with his uncle in Edinburgh and is now quite put out to be back at his family farm, Lallybroch.
In a phone call from the set of Outlander season four, actor John Bell told me that "wee Ian" is desperate to grow up and continue having adventures, so returning to Lallybroch is hard on him.
"[Ian's] two driving forces are, as you say, Ian's own thirst for adventure and his desire to be like his uncle and to make his uncle proud," Bell said, adding that the youngest of Jenny and Ian's seven children has a special sort of hero complex for his Uncle Jamie because Jamie swooped into Ian's life at a very formative time. If you'll recall, Ian was actually born during the years Jamie lived in the cave near Lallybroch. Soon after Ian's birth, Jamie turned himself in to the Redcoats and then spent years at Ardsmuir Prison and later Helwater estate. So Ian didn't truly meet his Uncle Jamie until he was nearly a teenager.
"I think because young Ian didn't grow up with Jamie, but kind of met him when he was about 12, he's always had that really looking-up, puppy-eyed, 'I want to be like you!' [thing]," Bell said. "And Jamie has always been the one to be like, 'Yeah, I ain't your dad. I'm your fun uncle and I'm gonna let you get away with anything you want. You can go and smuggle and we'll just keep it between us, OK?'"
So returning to Lallybroch is particularly hard on Ian, because he's been off having the time of his life with his "fun uncle." "When he goes back to Lallybroch, all of that comes crushing down again because he feels like he's lost his independence, he's lost his freedom and he's back under the thumb of his mum," Bell said, adding with a laugh, "And his sister, from the look of it."
So naturally Ian jumps at the chance to help Uncle Jamie retrieve the treasure in the North Sea. But he gets a little more than he bargained for when a mysterious ship and some dastardly pirates kidnap Ian and presumably take the treasure for themselves. Bell previously told us that he performed the famous print shop fire stunts himself, but when it came to the daring swim to retrieve the treasure, he left this particular scene to the stuntmen.
"I'll give that one to the stunt guys. They were in the North Sea - and I was totally fine with them doing that stunt," he said, laughing. "'You get in the cold, Scottish water. I'll do the fun stuff.'"
And fun stuff is definitely what lies ahead for Bell in season three. It may not always be fun for his character, but it's great fun for the actor. Bell can't give away too much, but he did say Ian is headed for "a snake pit."
"Somebody has plans for Ian, and they ain't good plans," Bell said. "As the ominous music suggests, he's going into a snake pit. Lots of trouble is heading his way and he's got to learn to survive, without Jamie's help, without Claire's help, without Fergus's help. He is on his own and this is going to be a real test of his character. I'm excited to show the fans another side to Ian that isn't all naive and geeky and all smiley, but has a little bit of fire ready to erupt from within."
So does this mean Ian will get to do some fighting? Bell said it might. "At the moment, he's still very much a kid, but young Ian, he's got claws, so you'll see. I promise you it'll be worth the wait."
As for young Ian moving forward, Bell can't say much about season four, though he did reveal to us that on the day we interviewed him from the set, they were doing stunt work. He also added that he is aware of some future plotlines for wee Ian from the books and it's just a dream job for an actor.
"I don't know if I can put it into words how exciting this is. Basically I'm reading a book by season, so I'm reading book four just now for season four, so I don't know everything that's going to happen to him, but my granny, who's been reading all of the books and is all caught up, has been giving me little tidbits of information and so have the producers," Bell said. "So without spoiling anything I can legit say that I am over the moon to be playing such a varied and badass character from later on."
When we joked that Outlander could run nine seasons (at least) because of how many books there are, Bell cracked, "Nine seasons and a spinoff!"
You heard it here first, folks. Start lobbying Starz for a young Ian spinoff.
The 2 Changes I Made That Helped Me Finally Shed Those Last Few Pounds
In 2016 I gained quite a bit of weight. It was by far my toughest year yet; I experienced loss, survived a near-death experience, and moved across the world to start a new life in a city I had never even visited before. It was impossible to keep my normal diet and fitness routine in the midst of all this chaos, so I ended up putting on some extra pounds - a fact I wasn't stoked about, but I knew it was only temporary.
At the beginning of this year I started my weight loss journey (well, it felt more like a battle at the start). Over the course of several months I got my diet back on track, started exercising more, and even meditated on a daily basis. But for every step forward, it seemed like I would take two steps back, and I couldn't get rid of those last stubborn pounds. It wasn't until recently that I made two significant changes to my lifestyle that helped me shed the unwanted pounds.
For starters, I started lifting heavy weights. I had always loved strength training much more than cardio. Give me a barbell any day of the week, just as long as I don't have to run at all. But I was one of those women who was afraid to lift heavy - I didn't want to look "bulky." After researching and talking to a few personal trainers, though, I learned that lifting heavy weights wasn't going to make me bigger. In fact, it was going to do the opposite and help me slim down.
So I started back squatting, hip thrusting, shoulder pressing, and deadlifting, all with the help of a personal trainer, so I could learn how to do it all on my own. I even incorporated chest dips and bench press into my workout routine. Before I knew it, I was squatting 200 pounds - and feeling like a total badass.
The picture on the left was from six weeks ago, and the one on the right was taken the other day. I couldn't believe how quickly the transformation started showing up on my body. Not only did I lose belly fat (without doing any ab exercises whatsoever), but my legs were slimmer, I lost fat on my shoulders and upper arms, and even my cheeks were less chubby. More importantly, though, I was feeling like myself again. I woke up with more energy every morning and felt stronger each day.
Another big change I made was the size of my meals. I already eat a vegan, plant-based diet, so I knew I didn't need to revamp the quality of my diet. Rather than trying some sort of diet fad, I simply started eating smaller portions of the food I already consume on a daily basis. When I packed my lunch, I packed a good chunk less than what I normally eat. Rather than putting a whole banana in my smoothie, I just used a small piece. These minor changes helped me reach my goals in a short amount of time.
I also made sure I was getting enough protein every day, because you can't make muscle gains without eating enough protein. I never counted my calories, but I only ate when I was hungry, and stopped when I was full. This was probably the biggest difference in my diet. Before, I was emotional eating left and right - between meals, late at night, whenever there was food around. Becoming more intentional and thoughtful about what and when I was eating made a huge difference.
Here's another picture of what I look like now.
A few people have commented on my progress and asked how much weight I lost. The truth is, I haven't lost any pounds on the scale. In the body scans I've been doing with my trainer every few weeks, though, it shows that I went from being in the "over" category of body mass index (BMI) to "normal." I ended up gaining three pounds of muscle and losing a couple pounds of fat. It's clear that the scale doesn't tell the full story.
I know my weight loss journey isn't over yet, but I'm floored at the progress I've already made, especially considering the fact that most of it came from heavy weight lifting, an activity that is known to be popular among big dudes.
But the truth of the matter is, women's bodies contain a small fraction of testosterone compared to men's, and that's the very hormone that produces muscle mass. So it's almost impossible to get "bulky" when you're lifting heavy weights (unless you're taking crazy supplements, of course). Furthermore, the more lean muscle mass you develop in your body, the more fat and calories you burn throughout the day.
Throughout all this, I was still doing cardio four times a week, because as good as weight lifting is for you, you still need cardio if you want to lose weight! I did an endurance running class twice a week, as well as cycling and HIIT cardio.
I can't wait to see what kind of changes will happen in another six weeks, because I'm still continuing along my path of weight lifting and portion control. And I'm feeling better than ever.
Work Your Abs and Your Shoulders in This Killer Plank Variation
No matter what your workout style, you're bound to come across a plank in your life, and for good reason. The move works the entire body and also creates an awareness that can help in everyday life and activities. Once you've mastered the traditional plank, step it up a notch with a knee driver. If you can believe it, a knee driver forces your abs and shoulders to work even harder. It's also a favorite of trainer Adam Rosante, who is known for killer total-body workout. Add it to your next strength-training routine or challenge yourself during commercial breaks the next time you have a marathon TV session planned.
- Begin in an elbow plank position with the abs engaged.
- Draw the left knee into the chest. Then step the foot back to the elbow plank position. Now draw the right knee into the chest and then step it back to the elbow plank position.
- This counts as one rep.
- Continue alternating sides and complete as many reps as you can in a minute.

These Striking Photos Demonstrate Why We Need to Stop Using "Nude" as a Color
How many times have you described a lipstick as "nude" without really thinking? In the beauty world, pinkish-beige has come to be interchangeable with "nude," but the reality is that nude does not mean the same thing for everyone. Beige may match fair skin, but someone with deeper skin wouldn't get that same subtle enhancement a "nude" product is meant to achieve. That's why a group of creatives in the advertising world decided to launch Nude Against Nude, a visually striking campaign that demonstrates how everyday so-called nude beauty and fashion products are not inclusive of all skin tones. The aim is to shed light on the inherent colorism present in these industries and, eventually, get major companies to change their ways.
The photos, featured in posters around New York City and online, feature people of different skin tones modeling "nude" items like makeup, swatches, shoes, lingerie, and pantyhose. The contrast between those items and the models' skin displays the project's message loud and clear.
"I'm a mixed-race person, so representation and diversity to me is very important," Jackie Jinse Moran, the project's art director, told POPSUGAR. "One of my biggest passions is makeup and beauty, so of course it's not hard to notice the lack of diversity in the beauty world. It started to irk me. I felt like I had to do something about it."
"If they're saying 'nude' is this one shade and you don't match it, you're kind of being told you're not part of this. You can't buy this product. It's not for you."
She enlisted her friends from advertising - copywriters Chandani Karnik and Ben Brown, photographer AnRong Xu, makeup artist Gary Wong, and website developer Simen Husmo - to come together for the cause. The whole project took a little over 10 weeks to complete from start to finish. The people behind the project also modeled and used their own "nude" products for the portraits.
"Since we are creatives, we just knew we wanted to use our talents for something good," Moran told us. "We just wanted to get these brands to notice and really understand - if they're saying 'nude' is this one shade and you don't match it, you're kind of being told you're not part of this. You can't buy this product. It's not for you."
Aside from the stunning photo series, the centerpiece of Nude Against Nude is the petition it also launched asking big parent brands like Estée Lauder, L'Oréal, and Johnson & Johnson to stop using the word "nude" interchangeably with beige or cream in product descriptions, campaigns, and beyond.
"I understand this is hard for people to [understand] if you don't experience it - that's a part of white privilege, not noticing it. It's not a part of their world," Moran said. "You use the term 'white privilege' and a lot of people get turned off. That's why Nude Against Nude is showing people the contrast between the color you call 'nude' and the ranges of skin tones out there. You can understand at one glance." When This Mom Says "Walgreens" to Her Husband, He Knows It's a Code Word For This
Jill Elliott Vardaman had a Walgreens day. Not sure what that means? Well, for the stay-at-home mom and her husband, it's code for a very bad day. In a Facebook video, which she filmed in Aisle 24 of her local Walgreens, she explains:
My dear husband would call me coming home from work and say, "Hey, do you need me to pick anything up?" I'd say, "No, I need to run to Walgreens." And he'd say, "What do you need? I can stop." No, I need to go to Walgreens. I need to count toothpaste, I need to read every greeting card, I basically need to run away from home. I always promise to come back. It just means it's been rough and I need to get away. So for the last nine-plus years, that has been code in our house for if I've had a bad day. So if I say, "Yeah, it's been a bad day," he'll say, "Is it a Walgreens day?"
Some days she's fine, but when things at home are especially hard? "There's not even a Walgreens big enough," she admits. "The distribution center would not be enough."
When she takes her self-imposed Walgreens "time-outs," she makes sure to follow the same rules she enforces with her own kids - namely, that time-outs last for one minute for every year of age. Her daughter, Ella, for instance, is 7 years old, so her time-outs last seven minutes.
"Well, I'm 40-plus years, so I get 40-plus minutes of time-out until I need to go home," she says.
Realizing she only has about 20 more minutes before she has to return to her family, Jill acknowledges that her little "corner of happy and healthy" helps her be a better mom: "Sometimes stepping away for a brief moment allows me to return and do just that."
