7 Habits I Had to Form to Finally Lose the Weight

I've always been an active person, but when I gained 15 pounds after getting an IUD, I had to get real about my diet and workouts. I hired a personal trainer at Equinox, and remarkably, she didn't tell me to download a calorie-counting app or work me until I dropped. Her tips for weight loss proved to be practical and therefore achievable. I lost four percent body fat in three months and felt stronger than I ever have in my life. I now can squat and deadlift my weight! I can fit in my skinny jeans again. The thing is . . . I did have to makes some big changes to my daily routine to lose the weight, and now there's no going back.

1. Strength Train With Cardio

Before Equinox, yoga was my main form of exercise. Though I was going five days a week, I didn't feel like I was getting stronger. Enter my personal trainer. She recommended strength training as my number one priority followed by cardio. I strength trained two to three times a week and did cardio two times a week (usually on the StairMaster). For my active rest days, I did yoga or Pilates two times a week. I also started walking an upward of seven miles several days a week.

2. Challenge Myself at Every Workout

My trainer encouraged me to increase the weight I lifted almost every week, even just a smidge, like two pounds. I resisted at first. After all, over the holidays, I broke a capillary in my eye from lifting too much weight. However, my trainer started me out with low weights and slowly increased the amount. I surprised myself by how quickly I was able to keep up and even found myself asking for more. The same rule here applies for cardio, yoga, and Pilates. I find a little way to challenge myself each time, whether it is increasing the mileage, holding side plank for longer, or perfecting my 100 series with straight legs.

3. Cut Out Sugar

Working out is only part of the equation. Diet is even more important, my trainer told me. I had to break my sugar addiction. I decided to stop cold turkey: no sugar, honey, agave, etc. Though some people say it's the worst thing ever, saying "no" to sugar countless times throughout the day helped me feel strong, like I was in charge - not my cravings. I also had to pay attention to nutrition labels and avoid anything with more than four grams of sugar. Dried fruit, as it turns out, is a sugar bomb! As are smoothies from smoothie joints. Sugar lurks in many unexpected places.

4. Choose Protein and Fat Instead of Carbs

If unchecked, I will eat over 50 percent of my calories in carbs. But that wasn't really working out for me. Though challenging, I reframed my meals so they consisted of mostly protein and healthy fats. I would have bulletproof coffee and smoked salmon with avocado for breakfast rather than a bowl of cereal or oatmeal. For lunch, it's veggie-chicken soup or salads loaded with diced chicken or canned tuna. Dinner consists of baked fish, steak, or chicken with a plate full of veggies (usually roasted broccoli). During the in-between times when I was hungry, I skipped my usual snack of dried fruit or crackers and make a protein shake (Moon Juice Blue Adaptogen plus water) or ate a spoonful of raw almond butter instead.

5. Stop Drinking Alcohol

Over the last year, I started drinking more days out of the week than not - usually just one to two drinks, yet it was enough to cause me to put on the pounds. While weight training, I discovered that even one drink would cause my DOMS to flare up and last for days. However, if I didn't drink, I could recover very quickly, usually within a day. Though I am not 100 percent dry, I always seem to regret drinking the next day, so I've cut way back and reserve drinking for special occasions.

6. Schedule My Carbs For Before and After Workouts

"I lost 10 pounds just by scheduling my carbs around my workouts," my friend told me. Inspired by that, I wanted to follow suit, and my trainer supported that mentality. I would eat brown rice, whole-wheat crackers, fruit, potatoes, and beans before or after a workout and limited my carb intake the other times of the day. If, in the afternoon, I experienced a huge slump (and protein/nut butter didn't help), I'd have a small serving of plain popcorn for a little boost.

7. Cook Mostly at Home, but Plan For Meals Out

I prepared almost all my meals at home and kept things simple. I kept the kitchen stocked with frozen meat, canned tuna, and vegetables galore. I used an Instant Pot to make big batches of brown rice, oatmeal, beans, and lentils on Sunday to last me through the week. That said, my trainer said it's OK to have one off day of the week where you may indulge in the bad stuff, whether it be a cocktail or chips with queso, french fries, a cheese plate, etc. So, six out of seven days, I'd have an A+ diet, while the seventh day, I might indulge in a slice of pizza or an IPA. I found letting loose (just a bit) and having a cheat day helped me stay on track and feel balanced.

The 6 Things I Do Every Sunday to Stay Healthy All Week

My Sundays are definitely not a day of rest. Far from it. It's the one day I devote to getting everything ready for my healthy week ahead. Take a glimpse into my Sunday. It may sounds a little nuts to jam-pack this much on a weekend day, but it sets me up for success. I know that if I don't plan ahead, I'm looking at skipped workouts and bowls of cereal for dinner.

Morning Workout

An early morning workout is a must for me on Sundays, not only because I teach a 9 a.m. Power Vinyasa class, but even if I didn't, I'd still make it a priority to get in a workout first thing. It energizes me all day, ensures I don't skip out, and gets me into the working-out mindset I want to continue throughout the week.

Meal Planning

I used to head to the grocery store with a big list of healthy foods. I found that not only would I grab things that never got used (RIP bunches of asparagus), but since I had no set plan, every day was a little stressful trying to scramble healthy meals together. Oftentimes I'd get home from picking up the kids at 5 p.m. and just make pasta and a bag of frozen veggies because it was easiest.

Now I take time to plan out my meals. Breakfast is simple - just a protein and greens smoothie or overnight oats. Lunch is a big salad, and I do something basic but healthy for each dinner of the week.

Here's an example of my weekly dinner plan:

Sunday: Potato Leek and White Bean Soup
Monday: Quinoa and Black Beans With Green Beans and Broccoli
Tuesday: Tofu, Veggie, and Rice (or Farro) Stir-Fry
Wednesday: Maple-Cumin Lentils Over Spaghetti Squash
Thursday: Avocado Pasta With Edamame, Tomatoes, and Roasted Cauliflower
Friday: Black Bean, Corn, and Roasted Sweet Potato Burritos
Saturday: Homemade Pizza With Roasted Mushrooms, Red Peppers, Tomatoes, Basil, and Tofu

I even write it out on a big chalkboard that I keep in my kitchen, so I can quickly glance at it in the morning and know what I need to do to get dinner done later.

Grocery Shop

Once I know what I'm making, I hit up the local grocery store as well as Trader Joe's (I love its marinated tofu and dairy-free mozzarella shreds!). I bring the kiddos along so we can not only spend time together, but so I can also teach them about healthy eating. I find if they help choose what to throw in the cart, they're more likely to eat it.

Meal Prep

Once I get home and put the groceries away, it's quite a scene in my kitchen with cutting board, knives, tons of glass containers, and veggies laid across my counter. I make 10 salads for the week (want the hubs to eat healthy too!); cut up sweet potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli, and red peppers for roasting; and cut up onions and other veggies for the stir-fry, as well as white potatoes (for that evening's soup). I also cook up one cup of quinoa and one cup of rice to use for dinners later that week. Getting done whatever I can on Sunday makes a huge difference at 5 p.m. when I need to make dinner for my famished family. If I have time, I'll also prep overnight oats for the week or freezer smoothie packs.

Gym Bag Ready

Aside from regular laundry, I make a point to wash all the workout clothes I'll need for the week: sports bras, tops, running and yoga bottoms, and socks. If I'm really on the ball, I'll fold and put these things in my drawers so I can easily grab them for early a.m. workouts.

Workout Schedule

Workouts don't just happen for me since I work and have a family and house to take care of. I have to set aside time, and since my schedule can be different from week to week, it helps to look ahead and jot down on my calendar workout "appointments." It's typically a run with some TRX and yoga from 6 to 7 a.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, then a longer run with my mommy-runner friends on Saturday morning, and yoga Sunday mornings. If it's written in ink on the calendar, it's more likely to happen.

The Punisher: If You Skipped Daredevil, Read This or You'll Be Confused

Have you started watching Netflix's The Punisher series and found yourself trying to remember exactly how the winsome journalist named Karen is connected to our intrepid antihero, Frank Castle? Never fear - we can help.

Karen Page, played by Deborah Ann Woll of True Blood, is from Daredevil. She originally works as a secretary at Union Allied Construction, meeting Foggy Nelson and Matt Murdock when they represent her over bogus murder charges. Page is being framed because she's a potential whistleblower for UAC's money-laundering activities. When Nelson and Murdock get her cleared of all charges, Page begins working as a paralegal for them.

As she continues to investigate UAC's criminal dealings, Page begins working with Ben Urich of the New York Bulletin. This eventually lands her a job at the newspaper, though that is months later, when she begins investigating the real story behind Frank Castle's killing spree. Page is disgusted that none of the stories about his crimes mention that the mobsters he's killing were responsible for murdering his wife and children, so she sets out to find out why and discovers that some higher-ups in New York City went to great lengths to cover up what happened to the Castle family.

Page and Castle forge an unlikely connection when he's on trial for his crimes, and she's one of his few advocates. She shows him a kindness and sympathy that few others do and that, coupled with the great onscreen chemistry Woll and Bernthal have together, has led to a vocal contingent of fans who heartily ship "Kastle."

Now on The Punisher, Frank is embroiled in a conspiracy bigger than he ever could have guessed, going back to the tours of duty he served in the Middle East. As he investigates who is really responsible for his family's death, Karen keeps appearing to try to talk him back from the ledge. At one point, she begs him to stop all the killing so that there's something left of him - because if he continues down this path, he may disappear altogether into the darkness. They share some lovely moments together in The Punisher, which are sure to have the Kastle contingent cheering.

But fans shouldn't get too excited about "Kastle" just yet. As Woll told Harper's Bazaar, there is something to be said for a platonic friendship between a man and a woman on screen.

"Jon and I certainly feel that there's room within that story to go there. But I also think as a woman, not every relationship with a man in the story has to be romantic," said Woll. "Frank's whole plot line is about avenging the murders of his wife and children, who he loved desperately, and until he comes to some closure with that, I don't know that Karen can really step on those toes. I do think that there's affection and longing between them, and just how that manifests, we'll just have to see."

American Horror Story: Cult's Finale Almost Included This Huge Hotel Easter Egg

FYI: a few spoilers for the finale of American Horror Story: Cult are below!

Well, you guys, we did it: we survived American Horror Story: Cult's emotional rollercoaster ride of a finale. In addition to Ally's epic "nasty woman" one-liner and Kai's gruesome demise, "Great Again" also included a few nods to previous seasons of Ryan Murphy's anthology series. According to Sarah Paulson, however, there was one more Easter egg that didn't make it into the episode.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly about the finale, Paulson was asked about that shocking Lana Winters name drop. "How genius? That to me was the greatest thing ever," she said of the reference to her season two character, a journalist who has herself committed to the season's titular Asylum in order to expose its inhumane practices. She went on to explain that during one of the finale's earlier scenes, shortly after the FBI raids Kai's lair and is hauling the fallen cult leader outside, Murphy nearly included another telling connection to a previous season: Hotel.

"We did do one thing. I don't know if they left it in there [editor's note: the scene appears to be cut]. Adina walks by and I went to light my cigarette, and I see [Kai] and I don't end up getting it lit till he crosses me and gets in the van, but then I lit it. The only reason I'm saying it is I used matches from Hotel to light my cigarette. It said Hotel Cortez. We were playing a dicey game. The props guys were like, 'Should we? Can we?' I was like, 'I think we should f*cking do that!' But if it's not in there, then it's not in there [laughs]."

Given how the Hotel Cortez is still around, there's a chance that Ally and Ivy might have stayed there before the events of the show. It wouldn't have been too weird, then, if Ally had popped up with a box of Hotel Cortez matches. That being said, Cult is pretty much packed to the gills with Easter eggs as it is, so yet another wink to longtime fans might have elicited eye-rolls. Let's all say a prayer that Ryan Murphy used some restraint, for once.

Ashley Fought Stress-Induced Weight Gain and Lost 95 Pounds in 11 Months

Stress caused Ashley Witter's weight to reach an unhealthy range, and it wasn't until she got a tip from a family member that she realized she needed to get help.

Ashley: Before

After enduring some difficult life changes and dealing with a high-stress job, she turned to food as a comfort. Her aunt told her about a weight-loss treatment center called Structure House, where Ashley was able to lose almost 100 pounds in less than a year. But to her, it was less about pounds lost and more about how she felt - she wanted the "old Ashley" back. She got what she hoped for, and then some. It took a lot of work, but Ashley quit her job, took matters into her own hands, and found happiness and health in the process.

POPSUGAR: What made you decide to start your weight-loss journey?

Ashley Witter: I hit my breaking point in my high-level corporate job working numerous hours, not eating throughout the day, and not sleeping at night. I was turning to food, wine, cheese, and whatever I could find late at night. My energy level had depleted, and I had gained close to 40 pounds in a year and couldn't do it anymore. I was sick, so I finally decided enough was enough and put in my resignation at my job. I had to find my old self again and get better. That's when my family suggested I go to Structure House.

PS: What do you think contributed to your weight gain?

AW: STRESS! The first thing I was taught when I went to Structure House was why we overeat as humans. The three reasons are stress, boredom, and habit. I was stressed all the time. My cortisol levels were off the grid, and my metabolism was suffering. I was skipping meals and not eating the "right" foods. I was tired, had low energy, and wasn't getting the physical activity that I used to. Gradually, over the course of probably four years, I continued to gain more and more. The more stressed out I got, the more weight I packed on.

PS: What drew you to Structure House specifically?

AW: I chose Structure House because my aunt had been twice and told me about what a wonderful and safe place it was. I didn't think I had a problem - denial at its best - but I knew I needed help. My family tried to kindly tell me I had a weight problem and that they were worried, but I didn't want to listen. I felt like, "This was my life and these are the cards I was dealt." Once I hit my breaking point, I knew that I needed to go to Structure House and get help. My family was fully supportive of my decision and helped me along the way.

PS: Had you tried other methods of weight loss before Structure House?

AW: Unlike others, I never really struggled with my weight until the past four or five years. Bad breakups, high-level corporate jobs, and simply life itself began to take a toll on me. I was always very active, played sports, and loved the outdoors, but yes, I tried some weight-loss methods such as powdered shakes, staying away from gluten, quick-fix type of things. Besides losing some immediate water weight, none of these diets ever worked or were something that could be maintained. Plus, when I cut my portions too much, I would hardly have the energy to work out. I was doing it all wrong.

PS: What's your favorite way to work out?

AW: Again, I have always loved sports my entire life and even when I was heavier I kept pushing to be active. I love backpacking, hiking, kayaking, snow skiing - pretty much anything outdoors. I have found in the past year that I really love boot camps and circuit training.

PS: What's your weekly exercise schedule?

AW: I was taught by Structure House to get at least 150 minutes of cardiovascular exercise a week. I do just that. I mix my workouts between cardio, strength training, and flexibility exercises. I hit the gym maybe three times a week as well as doing a group bootcamp class, running on the treadmill, or hitting the weights doing arm/leg workouts and repetitions. I love yoga, so I try to do a class or so a week of hot yoga. I wear a Fitbit and try every day to get at least 10,000 steps a day. That means when I am at work, I get up and move - this is key. On the weekends I am hiking, kayaking, or running. I also allow my body to recover, so I believe in letting your body have rest days as well.

PS: How do you keep workouts exciting?

AW: I am all about changing it up and keeping it exciting. I love to exercise in general, so I find hiking and backpacking are my favorite activities. You can enjoy the beauty of the outdoors and not even realize sometimes that you are getting a great workout. I have also had fun running 5Ks with my boyfriend. He is active as well so we help keep each other accountable, while having fun at the same time.

PS: How much weight have you lost?

AW: Since my stay at Structure House in October 2015, I have lost 95 pounds in 11 months and have maintained that weight. My weight has plateaued, so now I am more focused on building lean body mass.

PS: What was the first big difference, other than the number on the scale, that really made you feel proud and excited?

AW: For me, honestly, it wasn't really about the pounds lost, but more that I felt so much better. I came back to life again, and my energy was back. I found the old "Ashley" again, and that is what made me so proud. I didn't ever think that would be possible.

PS: How do you track your weight loss?

AW: Structure House gave us a diary to record our food. When I left the facility, I continued to use my diary and maintain my 1,400-calorie intake. Every time I finished a book, I would call Structure House and have them send me a new one. I don't use my diary much anymore because I have a pretty good hold on what I am taking in terms of calories, but if I ever feel like I am slipping, I start recording again. It was a great way to hold me accountable for what I was eating.

PS: What's a typical day of meals and snacks?

AW: I follow myplate.com pretty much for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I make sure at every meal that I have a protein, plenty of veggies, fruit, a dairy, and carbs. I eat nutrient-dense food that keeps me full. I have eliminated as much salt as possible and make healthy choices. I am pretty consistent on what I eat - lots of veggies (I love roasted brussels sprouts and sweet potatoes), lean meat, berries, Greek yogurt, and 100-percent whole-wheat options. I stay away from processed foods as much as possible. I read labels to make sure foods are low in trans and saturated fat and low in sugar and sodium. When I snack, I usually have a Kind bar or something simple made with whole ingredients.

PS: Do you count calories?

AW: Even though I have lost 95 pounds, I am still mindful of the calories that I am taking in. I am mindful and aware, and that is what has helped me be successful in my journey. Most people do not even realize the amount of calories they are taking in. So yes, I do keep track. I stick between 1,400-1,500 calories per day of nutrient-dense foods. If I eat something that is not as healthy, I am aware and only eat a little. Moderation is key in weight loss. Making change takes time, so having a treat every now and then is not a bad thing.

PS: What are the healthy staples that are always in your fridge?

AW: I eat egg-white omelets almost every morning, so I stock my fridge with good veggies and fruit. I buy a lot of chicken and lean meats so I have a protein. I buy a lot of 100-percent whole-wheat sandwich thins and wraps. I love avocados and salsa. I pretty much mirror my food choices based off of what was cooked for me at Structure House.

PS: How do you strategize for meals out?

AW: Again, I am pretty boring, so I eat the same thing a lot. I am pretty consistent with my meals, so it hardly seems like work anymore. When I go out to eat, I research the restaurant first to figure out the healthy options I can choose from. I love Longhorns because they have a calorie counter for all the food. I can have an incredible meal for 430 calories.

PS: Do you use a fitness tracker? Which one, and how do you think it helped you?

AW: I use a Fitbit. I have bought one for all my family members as well. It has helped me a lot, plus it is a great thing for everyone. I love that Fitbit allows you to compete against each other. My dad is now super competitive with my brother and me. It's a win for everyone. Also, I know when my steps are down that it is time to move.

PS: What role did Structure House play in your journey? Would you recommend it?

AW: Structure House changed my life! I have told this to all the staff: I wouldn't be the person I am today without them. They gave me the tools to regain my life back. Not only am I back to my old self, but I have never felt better. I now work at a job I love, and I got asked to teach the Health Coaching certificate program at an accredited university in Georgia. My work lets me run weight-loss challenges, and I am creating my own health coaching website to help others. I met an incredible man, and I just couldn't be happier. I have realized that you have to love yourself before you can love others. I can't thank Structure House enough.

PS: What advice do you have for anyone starting out on a weight-loss journey?

AW: Take a leap of faith and make yourself happy. You have one life to live, and make it the best it can be. There is no reason to go through life unhappy and unhealthy. We are all in charge of our own destiny, so why not make this life the best it can be? Also, you are not alone. So many people struggle with weight issues, but there is hope - I promise.

The Winter holidays have always been my favorite time of the year. You know those obnoxious people who put a Christmas tree up before December? That was me. I binge-watched the Hallmark channel, played Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" on repeat, and drank enough eggnog to fill a swimming pool (bourbon included, of course). By the time New Year's rolled around, my credit card was maxed out and I could barely button my jeans. I couldn't make sense of why anyone wouldn't love the song "Santa Baby" and had a disdain for people with a "Scrooge-y" mentality.

Even though I had sympathy for those in need, I lacked empathy for the average Joe or anyone who put a damper on my Christmas spirit. I assumed their holiday depression could be remedied with a delicious gingerbread cocktail or some warm apple pie. It wasn't until I was pushed into my own worst nightmare that I realized what a fool I'd been.

My "Baby's First Christmas" ornament would be replaced with an "In Memoriam" one.

I became a widow on June 17 of 2014. Three days before my husband died, we had a child together. Bringing my son into this world was nothing short of a miracle, but my joy was turned inside out when I lost Justin. It would be a short six months until December, and I knew it would be a catastrophe. My "Baby's First Christmas" ornament would be replaced with an "In Memoriam" one. I would not just mourn my husband; I would also mourn my baby's first Christmas.

Weeks after Justin's death, I started seeing a counselor. He was helping me through the different stages of grief when out of nowhere he broached the subject of the holidays. "Don't you dare," I said in anger. It wasn't even October and he was already talking about Christmas? Tears filled my eyes when he informed me that I needed to start facing this now. I protested, telling him of my plans to bypass the holiday season. "It won't be something you can escape," he said. When October rolled around, we made plans to have our weekly session. But this time it would be at a Sam's Club. I was clueless as to why. Upon entering the store, I noticed a Christmas lights display. "Follow me," my counselor said. We walked a few feet and stopped at the beginning of an aisle: the Christmas aisle. I couldn't believe my eyes. It was October, yet the insane amount of Christmas decorations made it look like December. As we made our way through the red and green garland, I sobbed while remembering all of my happy holiday memories with Justin. That was the moment I realized I could run, but I could not hide.

My family and I came up with a plan for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. We would remove ourselves from any familiar surroundings, as we knew they would only torment us. I told every friend, foe, and family member of our plans and made it clear that I would not be accepting any gifts or attending anything resembling a turkey dinner. We flew to Newport Beach, CA, on Thanksgiving day. I was refreshed to spend 10 days with my childhood friend Kimmy. It was the first time I could breathe in five months. I'd been surrounded by death for so long, and I finally felt a little free. I ran laps around the cliffs of Corona del Mar while blasting my iPod. I told myself not to stop. I could feel my heart pounding harder the faster I went. When I finally slowed down to catch my breath, I noticed the magnificent view of the cliffs and the beach down below. I felt at peace, and I never wanted to leave.

By the time we returned to Florida, the Christmas holiday was in full swing. Our neighborhood was oversaturated with white lights, wreaths, and blowup Santas. That calm and peaceful place I found on the cliff that day was slipping away. Having always been on the other side of Christmas, i.e. the joyous side, I never realized just how much society throws it in your face. Why had I wasted so much time watching the Hallmark channel when even the SyFy channel played Christmas programs? Did every single restaurant have to shove a gingerbread martini down my throat? And since when did grocery stores start playing holiday music? I couldn't even shop for milk without hearing my once-beloved "Santa Baby." It was everywhere! Serves me right, I suppose. I took each day as it came, and when Christmas Eve finally arrived, we drove to Atlanta, GA.

On Christmas Day there wasn't much to do; most places were closed. My mom discovered the Georgia Aquarium was open, and it seemed like the perfect place to spend our antiholiday. As we walked around with hundreds of strangers, it occurred to me that I had now become that person I'd always loathed, and I felt ashamed. Ashamed of not only the person I used to be, but also the one I'd become. I gazed into the bright blue fish tank and noticed a stingray swimming in my direction. My 6-month-old son pointed at the beautiful creature, and he started giggling. Tears streamed down my face as I smiled and made a promise never to be so selfish again. In that moment, I realized that a big part of me still wanted to buy my son his first Christmas ornament. I found a beautiful silver one in the shape of a baby rattle. It opened up, and on the inside was a place for a photo. I had inscribed: "To my gorgeous son, you are my strength." It still sits next to his daddy's things in a box.

This year will be my fourth Christmas without Justin. I still dread this time of year, and I suppose Christmas will never be the same. But I know that it can and will be good again. I have my son to thank for that.

The Punisher: Who Is Micro, Frank Castle's Right-Hand Man?

At the end of Daredevil season two, Frank Castle burns down his family's house to try to erase his old life and walks off to fully assume the role of The Punisher - but not before smashing a framed photo of his US Marine Corps platoon and retrieving a disc hidden there. Written on the CD is one word: Micro (which, at the time, sent fans running wild with speculation about The Punisher spinoff).

After the episodes dropped, the Daredevil social media accounts posted several cryptic messages with photos of the disc. On Facebook, the message read, "Tomorrow's answers are hidden in the past." On Instagram, the caption teased, "There's a storm comin'." And on Twitter, it said, "Seek and you shall find."

Fans of the comics know that David Lieberman, aka Microchip in the comics, is an elite hacker and former member of the National Security Agency who faked his own death to expose government secrets. He becomes an ally of Castle's, supplying him with weapons and gadgets, but they ultimately become enemies when Micro thinks that Castle has gone over the edge. Things are a little different on The Punisher. Read on to find out how, but be warned of light spoilers ahead.

Like in the comics, Micro's "death" is also a frame job, but he doesn't do it by himself. He is forced into it under threats to his family, a wife and two kids (just like Castle had). The people who threaten Micro are the same people who are responsible for Castle's family being murdered. On the show, Micro actually contacts Castle, telling him that he thinks he knows who really killed Castle's family, which is how they get embroiled in this conspiracy that is far more vast than they ever thought - and it all leads back to a private paramilitary firm called ATLAS, run by Castle's best friend from the service, Billy Russo.

After Micro convinces Castle that there's something going on with the government, the military, and his family's death, they begin working together to track down the mysterious Agent Orange, the man at the top pulling all the strings. As they carry out their mission, Micro acts as Castle's eyes and ears (and sometimes an EMT), as they start to forge an uneasy friendship.

There's also an added side plot with Lieberman's family, something wholly original for the series. Castle bonds with Micro's wife, Sarah, in his quest to get leverage over Micro - as in, fall in line or see how easily I can get to your loved ones. Castle and Sarah are drawn to each other, mostly out of loneliness and sadness, but thankfully it doesn't really turn into a love triangle situation (which would have felt really icky). There's a brief blip in this regard, but it's handled in a really great way.

Micro and Castle stick with their work, even as it grows ever more dangerous and Micro's family is put in jeopardy. There are some iffy moments - at certain points, you have to wonder if either man is going to survive the season. But in the end, they become the latest in a long line of Marvel buddy duos, which should be really entertaining to watch in the inevitable second season of this latest Netflix Marvel series.

"Instead of missing class she actually took her 3-year-old brother back to high school with her and let him sleep on her while she finished her last class of the day," Candice wrote in a post to Facebook featuring a screen grab of the Snapchat photo. "I'm not sure on the legalities here or what kind of rules were broken but I also just don't care. My sweet teenager helped her family out and returned to her other responsibility while snuggling her baby brother."

Candice says she can't believe how much love the photo has gotten in a few short days. "My daughter, Stiles, is a great teenager and I'm lucky to be her mama," she told POPSUGAR.

The mom noted in her caption that she's either the "worst mom in the world or totally nailing it," but we'd argue strongly for nothing but the latter. What's the Real Deal With Hydroquinone?

Hydroquinone has become pretty controversial in the beauty world. One minute, it's the miracle ingredient for clearing up dark spots, and the next, it's supposedly carcinogenic. It's hard for anything to be deemed trustworthy and effective once labeled as a cancer causer. Yet, through all the fuss, experts have maintained that hydroquinone remains the gold standard for erasing hyperpigmentation and age spots. So in all that toxic talk, what's the truth? We asked three experts to weigh in.

Why all the fuss?

"Much of this controversy stems from its ban in South Africa due to side effects," explained Sejal Shah, NYC cosmetic dermatologist and founder of SmarterSkin Dermatology. "Subsequently, other countries banned hydroquinone. It turns out that the questionable products in South Africa contained mercury and other contaminants, which more likely account for side effects being seen."

Dr. Shah further explained that there have been reports of hydroquinone causing cancer in mice when administered in high doses orally, but there are no studies to date showing that this happens in humans and with a topical application. "When properly formulated and used, hydroquinone can be extremely safe and effective, and we have numerous studies confirming this," Shah added.

Does it bleach skin?

Rachel Roff, a medical esthetician and founder of Urban Skin Rx, quickly squashed this myth. "When used within a safe strength, hydroquinone doesn't bleach someone's natural skin tone. It evens out the skin," Roff said. While it may not be proven to cause cancer, if used incorrectly, it can leave skin vulnerable to excessive sun exposure, which could mean a higher risk of skin cancer and sunburn.

"As a general known fact, side effects of skin bleaching, regardless of product or ingredient, include skin irritation and sun sensitivity," dermatologist Dendy Engelman said. There's also a condition called ochronosis, where the skin darkens. This reaction is mainly associated with high concentrations of hydroquinone that has been used for prolonged periods of time.

When do you need hydroquinone?

The main purpose of hydroquinone in skin care is as a lightening agent. "Skin lightening is performed for a variety of reasons, including sun damage. Melanin (aka pigment) is produced by skin cells called melanocytes, and various topical creams are used to reduce the amount of pigment that is produced to brighten the skin," Engelman said. These include hydroquinone, which is the most common, botanical extracts, and antioxidants.

How do you use it safely?

A hydroquinone regimen should be used for no more than three to four months at a time, followed by a minimum of two months off. After the two months, if hyperpigmentation is still an issue, you can return to using hydroquinone for another three- to four-month period.

What if you just can't get behind hydroquinone?

While the experts agree that nothing works on dark spots quite as fast as hydroquinone does, there are ingredients that are just as effective. It may take longer to see results, but natural solutions like kojic acid, alpha arbutin, niacinamide, and vitamin C can help even out your skin. Something like SkinMedica Lytera 2.0, a pigment-correcting serum that is retinol- and hydroquinone-free, balances the skin's melanin production and resists triggers that cause discoloration.

BBG: The Supereffective Fitness Program You Need to Know

We're totally crazy about Australian trainer and Instagram star Kayla Itsines and her program, BBG. But what exactly is BBG? Let's take a step back and look at the program that made Kayla such a star and her clients so obsessed.

What Is It?

BBG stands for "Bikini Body Guide," and it's been transforming women's bodies with dramatic weight-loss results since 2012. The guides include a fitness and nutrition plan spanning 12 weeks and can be done at home or at a gym.

The program is built around intense 28-minute workouts three days a week. That's it. They're broken down into arms and abs, legs, and full body, so each day of the week, you'll focus on a different muscle group. Expect to see moves like push-ups and planks, burpees, jumping jacks, mountain climbers, and weighted squats. The combination of weight training and cardio makes the program incredibly effective, while the meal plan helps women make more educated dietary choices to better fuel their bodies.

How Does It Work?

During a workout, you'll have two circuits, each with four moves, for which you'll do a certain number of reps. For example, circuit one might look like: 15 burpees, 15 push-ups, 20 jumping jacks, and 20 lunges on each leg. You repeat circuit one as many times as you can within seven minutes at your own pace. You'll take a one-minute break and do the same thing with circuit two, which will be a new set of four exercise moves. After completing circuit two, you start over and do both again. The result? An insanely challenging workout completed in less than 30 minutes.

As far as nutrition goes, Kayla doesn't really eliminate foods. Instead, she focuses on healthier choices and provides BBG members with healthy, delicious recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, desserts, and snacks. On her app, Kayla serves up weekly grocery shopping lists that provide the ingredients for that particular week's recipes, leaving zero guesswork.

What Makes It Different?

The simplicity and brevity of the workouts combined with their ability to be modified have made this program exceptionally attractive to many a newcomer. In fact, Kayla loves the idea that she is often a woman's introduction to fitness. She told POPSUGAR, "I want to be someone's first entry [to exercise], and I think it's a good way to enter, because you're entering into a community that focuses on how you feel rather than focusing on how you look."

Everyone's story is completely different when they come to BBG, but devotees find a way to make the program work for them, whether they're fighting ovarian cancer or thyroid cancer, beating obesity and losing 100-plus pounds, overcoming an eating disorder and building strength, or just trying to get a bigger booty.

We asked Kayla what she thinks makes BBG so special. "Firstly it's for women, which women love," she said. "And then there's the fact it's 28 minutes. . . . It's so quick and easy but also very challenging and pushes you." She also noted how it's a superempowering program that allows a woman to do everything on her own and feel accomplished as an individual.

While the program itself is appealing, what probably trumps it all is the BBG community. There's an element in this program that isn't really found in many other fitness programs, and it has created somewhat of a sisterhood. "It's really easy to lose motivation and lose inspiration," Kayla told POPSUGAR. "But when you have a community like the BBG community, it's actually very hard to lose motivation, because they're constantly encouraging you and posting photos. It's like a family."
