The Story Behind Queen Letizia and King Felipe VI's Love
Image Source: Getty / Carlos Alvarez
King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain have been married for more than 13 years, and while the royal couple is solid, their relationship didn't start that smoothly.
Back in 2002, Queen Letizia was just known as Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano, an international journalist working for Televisión Española, anchoring the evening news and reporting from abroad on disasters like the terrorist attack in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001 and the war in Iraq. Then Prince Felipe must have been a fan of the news because rumor has it he asked a journalist friend, Pedro Erquicia, to set up a dinner and invite Letizia so the two could meet. While reports say Letizia handed over her number to the prince, the two didn't start dating for a few more months.
Things got serious in the following years while the couple dated in secret, and on Nov. 1, 2003, the Spanish royal family shocked the country by announcing the prince's engagement to Letizia. But the marriage could have never happened: Letizia was not only a commoner, becoming the first woman with no royal blood to be in the line of succession for the Spanish crown, but she was also divorced. The journalist had been married to Alonso Guerrero Pérez until 1999.
While some didn't approve of the engagement, Prince Felipe's parents, Queen Sofía and King Juan Carlos, stood by the couple, although there was a bigger issue. If Letizia's previous marriage had been performed by the Catholic church, the Vatican would have had to extend a special permission that allowed her to marry Felipe. Luckily, Letizia's previous marriage had only been a civil ceremony, and the couple officially wed at the Catedral de Santa María la Real de la Almudena in Madrid on May 22, 2004. Now the queen - King Juan Carlos abdicated the crown to King Felipe in 2014 - admired for her fashion sense, she has two daughters with Felipe, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía.

4 Surprising Changes I Experienced When I Gave Up Coffee For a Week
I recently fell off the fitness wagon - hard. I honestly couldn't tell you what the catalyst was for my downfall from fairly healthy human into full-blown sloth, but I just couldn't talk myself into working out or caring much about what went into my body anymore. Instead of taking cycling classes several mornings a week and enjoying the occasional dance class, I started thinking of the walk between the fridge and my couch as an acceptable form of cardio and let buckets of coffee replace exercise as my morning jolt.
Sure, this behavior was a blast for a week or two, but before I knew it I was six weeks deep into the sedentary blob lifestyle and feeling . . . not great. It was time to face the facts: I was in a rut. Also, my pants didn't fit.
Inspired by my coworkers' seriously impressive wellness experiments, I decided that undertaking one (small) healthy experiment of my own probably wouldn't kill me, and it might even be the nudge I needed to get my general health game back on track. So in the name of zipping up my jeans and giving my couch a night off sometime in the near future, I volunteered myself for a low-key wellness project that seemed like it could get me into a healthier frame of mind again: quitting caffeine cold turkey for a week.
I should probably apologize now to anyone who interacted with me during those first two dark, caffeine-free days (withdrawal headaches are not a joke, people), but by day three, I started to notice some differences in my mindset and body that made it worthwhile. So will I be cutting out caffeine forever? Absolutely not. Did I have a small cup of coffee this morning to celebrate finishing this little project? You bet. But moving forward, I'll think of caffeine as a treat instead of a necessary component for survival in my food pyramid. And I'll keep in mind that sometimes all you need to snap out of a rut is a tiny reminder that you're capable of getting yourself back on the fitness wagon every time you fall off.
Below, I've spelled out four benefits I noticed from my caffeine-free week, from a change in my diet to a shift in my mental state. Dare you to try it next!
1. Breakfast Made a Comeback
I always thought of myself as someone who ate breakfast religiously. That's because prior to my workout slump, I had been. The only way I survived all those morning cycling classes without passing out and/or wanting to die was by fueling up beforehand. But when I was forced to skip my morning coffee, it hit me that my breakfast routine had apparently gone out the door along with my workouts. So instead of starting my day by guzzling a vat of caffeine and calling it a meal, I got back into the habit of eating a piece of fruit and toast or whipping up some oatmeal in the mornings. Another bonus from replacing morning caffeine with food: I felt like I made some better food choices at lunchtime because I wasn't completely starving by midday, too.
2. I Was Noticeably Calmer
Like many people, I've found that my anxious tendencies have definitely gotten worse with age. And even though I've known for a while that caffeine probably wasn't helping in that department, I had no idea just how much it exacerbated my symptoms until I went without it. After the first two days, I found that I fell asleep quickly (something that really isn't easy for me) and was generally less on edge throughout my day, even if everything didn't go as planned. Seriously, this perk alone made the experiment worthwhile for me!
3. I Was Way Less Bloated
Most of my beloved caffeinated drinks also have sugar in them (or artificial sweetener) which - fun fact! - causes bloat. Boo. Swapping out my regular rotation of Diet Coke, Diet Snapple, and coffee with sweetener in favor of plain seltzers and warm water with lemon made my usual case of afternoon bloat disappear almost completely. Do I actually like plain seltzer and warm water with lemon as much as Diet Coke, Diet Snapple, and coffee with sweetener? No, I'm not a monster. But sitting all day at your desk feeling uncomfortably puffy is the actual worst, and zipping up your pants without having to lay down is pretty awesome. So, there you have it.
4. My Sugar Cravings Went Away
Aside from easing bloat, the reduction of sugary-tasting drinks in my diet actually reduced my cravings for sugary foods, too. Apparently even drinking or eating artificial sweeteners (the ones I most often use) can dial up your cravings for sugary treats across the board. By the end of my caffeine-free week, I wasn't craving something sweet after eating something savory anymore, and I actually caught myself describing a snack as "too sweet," which has definitely never happened before.
5 Moves Trainers Think You Should Skip and What to Do Instead
We go to the gym. We work out at home. We stick to moves we know and trust, but could some of those tried and true exercises be interfering with all our hard work? We asked three trainers to tell us what exercises they think we should just stop doing. They gave us two simple questions to consider: are the exercises helping you reach your goals, and do they lead to overuse injuries?
Read on for five moves you should consider skipping and more beneficial exercises to do instead.
5 Ways to a Better, More Abtastic Plank
The plank is one of the best moves for targeting your core. In fact, it's a total-body exercise that helps sculpt toned arms, shoulders, and legs as well. Want to get crazy-toned abs faster? Challenge yourself on your next plank by adding one of these modifications you can do in a basic plank position.
- Stop praying: Clasping your hands in elbow plank makes the exercise easier on your abs (and can cause your shoulders to round) so unclasp your hands and focus on creating a long line with your body, shoulders and back, instead.
- Flip your hands: A simple flip of your hands so they are palms up when you are in elbow plank will challenge underused arm muscles and also force your core to work more.
- Stay up: The straight-arm plank is more difficult than the elbow plank, so if you're finding that you need more of a challenge as you hang out on your forearms, focus on perfecting a plank just on your hands.
- Plank on a BOSU: Get unstable by resting your forearms or palms on a BOSU or exercise ball. This challenges your balance to work your core even more.
- Add a variation: If you're ready for even more of a challenge, there are many different ways to make your basic plank that much harder. Here are eight plank variations you need to try.

3 Weight-Loss Rules For Breakfast
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day for so many reasons. But you need to make sure that you're doing it right. If you're trying to maintain or lose weight, here are some things to consider when enjoying your first meal of the day.
Eat It Soon
Studies have found that eating breakfast jump-starts your metabolism, and not only that, it can help ensure that you don't feel so starved later that you make bad eating choices for lunch or dinner. To take advantage of your body's fat-burning potential, try to eat breakfast soon after waking up.
Go For Filling
Stay away from foods that can lead to a midmorning crash. Instead, opt for meals that are full of slow-digesting nutrients to help keep you satisfied throughout the morning; high-fiber, high-protein breakfast options are a good choice for feeling full and energized. And make sure your breakfast doesn't have too much sugar in it - here are seven low-sugar, high-protein, and fiber-filled breakfast ideas that fit the bill.
Watch Out For Portions
A big breakfast can help fill you up, but you don't want to overdo it. Check out our handy chart of what servings sizes should look like, and keep calories in check with this list of the amount of calories in typical breakfasts.

Anastasia Beverly Hills's Holiday Collection Is Here, and You're Going to Want It ALL
Mere months after dropping the Subculture Palette to mixed reviews, Anastasia Beverly Hills is back with a new collection, and it's clear the brand isn't here to play. That's because ABH has just released 10 new products that make up its 2017 Holiday Collection, including "Prism," a new palette. And guess what? These babies are all seriously gorgeous and will give you the brand's famous glow.
Chances are, you've been waiting patiently for this collection ever since you saw ABH President Claudia Soare looking like a luminescent goddess while wearing powders from the launch's Glow Kit. Seriously, the woman was only just sitting in her dang car, but her highlight was so on point.
Well, ladies and gentlemen, meet the Glow Kit's following four shades: "Marshmallow" (iridescent white), "Gumdrop" (a soft lilac), "Starbust" (frosty pink), and "Butterscotch" (bright gold). This range of colors ensures you'll never be of want for a new way to sparkle.
Two new blush sets, Gradient and Radiant, are also included in the line. The first is made up of earthy matte shades like "Dusk" (a medium brown), "Vegas" (a deep berry), "Chocolate" (a cool mocha), and "Blackberry" (a juicy purple).
Radiant includes "Coastline" (a sandy peach), "Spoiled" (a soft pink), "Breeze" (a warm pink), and "Terrace" (an electric orange). Whereas Gradient includes cool neutral tones, Radiant packs a punch of girly color. This is not your New England grandma's holiday collection - there is no pumpkin spice for ABH. Instead, these bright, surfer girl colors are pure West Coast sunshine.
Three new Liquid Lipsticks are a-coming for your beauty bag. By now, you probably know, love, and hoard this product, as it's opaque, yet nondrying and super pigmented. The new hues are sandy browns and soft pinks, so again, if you're asking Claudia Soare, subtlety is the trend of Winter.
Finally, of course, there's the piece de resistance - the brand spanking new Prism Palette. While ABH fans were quick to note on social media that at first glance the 14 new shades strike a resemblance to Subculture, look again and you'll notice that the ultramatte, duo chrome, and metallic finishes sparkle way brighter - because it's the holiday!
We're especially excited about Dimension, a holographic silver powder with speckles of reflective pink (think Daenerys meets unicorn hair), and Throne, a shimmery camo that looks like a Winter evergreen tree - if it sparkled.
Remember, back in August, Norvina called upon social media to let fans have a say into what the new palette's formula should look like. In an emotional post, she asked for constructive criticism, so we can't wait to see how she ran with suggestions about how the powders should feel.
Ahead, see every gorgeous thing you can get your hands on today via the Anastasia Beverly Hills website.
6 Ways to Kick Your Run Up a Notch
Somewhere around the first of your three-miler, it hits. You're bored. Or maybe you're hungry. Actually, you have a cramp. Whatever it is, the ugh thoughts start poking in. You begin to wonder if it's possible to continue on or if your time is better spent turning right back around for a rain check with Stranger Things. Maybe it's because you're sore from yesterday's workout or perhaps this is your fourth day in a row of running. Maybe you're just not challenged enough.
Not to fret: stave off boredom for good with these expert tips to kick your next run up a notch.
1. Toss in some strength training.
Some runners like to be just runners. Morning miles, every damn day. The problem with that? As runners, it's common to fall into some sort of quad-dominant scenario where the powerhouse muscles - including the back, glutes, hamstrings, and calves - are placed on the back burner. By incorporating strength work, you can strengthen these important mover muscles and build a more balanced body. This will not only help you become a stronger runner, but will also help prevent injury. Try incorporating strength training in at least once per week to start, suggests Jess Movold, coach at New York City indoor treadmill studio Mile High Run Club. She suggests this circuit, for starters:
Goblet Squats: 4 sets, 12 reps
Stand with your feet wider than shoulder width with toes pointed slightly out. Hold your dumbbell at chest level with both hands. Keeping your back flat, push your hips back, bend your knees, and lower your body until your thighs are parallel to the floor and your elbows touch your knees. With your weight focused in your heels, push yourself up to the starting position.
Bent-Over Row: 4 sets, 12 reps
With a pair of dumbbells and your feet hip-width distance apart, bend at the waist. Keep your back parallel to the floor with a neutral spine, not rounded. With a slight bend in your knees, hold your arms and the dumbbells extended out in front of you. Engage your abs and squeeze your shoulder blades together as you bring the weights to your torso. Be sure to keep your elbows in and pointed upward. Slowly lower the weights back to the starting position to complete one rep.
Push-Ups: 4 sets, 12 reps
Come into plank position with your arms and legs straight, shoulders above the wrists. Take a breath in, and as you exhale, bend your elbows out to the sides and lower your chest toward the ground. Stop as soon as your shoulders are in line with your elbows. Inhale to straighten the arms. This counts as one rep.
2. Stop running forward.
You can be one of two types of treadmill runners. The first type sets a speed and incline right off the bat, zones out, and likely flips the in-unit TV to HGTV or some other mindless show for 45 minutes. The other type uses the treadmill to their full advantage, playing with everything from backward hustle-ups to side shuffles.
"On the treadmill, I love to add side steps, backwards runs, and hustle-ups into my routines," says Lindsey Clayton, trainer at Barry's Bootcamp and cofounder of Brave Body Project. "We move our bodies in 360 degrees of motion, not just forward and back. Adding in some lateral movement will challenge your balance and agility." Clayton suggests adding in side steps as an active recovery to treadmill workouts instead of walking. If you're brave enough to hustle backward, shift the incline to between six and eight percent and then backpedal or do high knees for 30-second to one-minute intervals.
3. Register for a race.
When you find that all of your motivation is totally zonked, whether its with running or a to-do list item at the office, you can renew your sense of purpose by setting some goals. "Finding a race and hitting the 'register' button is a huge motivator," says Movold. "It gives you something to work toward. Get that race on your calendar and set your sights on it!"
4. Find some fun in a fartlek.
OK, the word fartlek is funny. We get it. For the unaware, "fartlek" is the Swedish term for speed play, which means changing your speed for varying distances while out on a run.
"There aren't really any rules to designing a fartlek," says Clayton. "If you're on that track, you could do one slow loop and then sprint for quarter loop, then repeat that 10 times. If you're out on the street, it could be jog until someone says, 'Sprint to that stop sign,' and you go all out. It's a fun way to mix up your training and it's surprisingly hard!" (For more ideas, check out how to do a fartlek run.)
5. Pick a destination that sends you running through new places.
How many times have you suggested to a friend that you go check out a new brunch spot or peep an upcoming museum exhibit? Make your adventure next-level by running to your destination. I recently did this with my boyfriend, heading to an outdoor graffiti exhibit of sorts in Brooklyn. Our route had us weaving through parts of New York City (specifically Queens and Brooklyn) neither of us had explored before, and loads of cool art and crisp brunch ciders were waiting for us at the end of our five-miler.
6. Hit that interval, hard.
You'll be amazed at how fast time goes by when you're constantly varying your speed and overall intensity. Plus, just one minute of sprint intervals can give you a similar cardiorespiratory gains as 50 minutes of traditional endurance training, despite a dramatically lower exercise volume and time commitment, according to one McMaster University study.
Clayton suggests setting your treadmill for 10 minutes and crushing sprint repeats. "Jog for 30 seconds, sprint for 30 seconds, recover for 30 seconds, and progress your sprint by adding speed each time," she says. "It's hard AF, but it will noticeably improve your speed work in a short amount of time."

If This Is Where Claire Is Headed, Outlander Is About to Get Dark
If you think Outlander heroine Claire Fraser has been through a lot in three seasons, well, you're right. She works as a military nurse in World War II, gets married, travels through time, gets married again, gets pregnant twice, loses a child, gives birth to a child, loses a husband, travels through time again, and is now off on a high seas adventure to the West Indies.
For a preview of what's in store for Claire in what's left of season three, check out our guide to Diana Gabaldon's Voyager. But to find out what might befall Claire in seasons four, five, and beyond, read on below for a guide to Gabaldon's other novels in the Outlander series.
Be warned of spoilers from books four through eight below.
Drums of Autumn
On their way to the plantation owned by Jamie's Aunt Jocasta, Jamie, Claire, Ian, and Fergus are robbed by Stephen Bonnet, a man they had previously helped escape the gallows in Charleston. He makes off with the rest of their money, treasure, and Claire's gold wedding band from her marriage to Frank.
Upon establishing that they don't want to take over Jocasta's plantation, the Frasers settle Fraser's Ridge in North Carolina, making it a place for ex Ardsmuir prisoners to call home. This is where we suspect we'll see Murtagh again after he survived Culloden on the show (he perished there in the books).
After establishing their settlement, word of Claire's skills as a medic spreads far and wide, and she begins traveling the nearby countryside to tend to the sick.
She is reunited with Brianna when her daughter arrives at Fraser's Ridge, having traveled through time to warn her parents because she found a record of their death notice in an old newspaper (though that printing turned out to be incorrect). When Claire learns that Brianna is pregnant, she agrees to keep her daughter's secret that she was raped by Bonnet and he may be the father of her baby.
After Jamie's misunderstanding about who raped Brianna, Claire must travel with Jamie and Ian to rescue Roger Wakefield from a local Native American tribe that is holding him prisoner. They manage to get Roger back when Ian agrees to take Roger's place; Ian is adopted into the Mohawk tribe and stays with them for a long while.
Claire helps Brianna deliver her son, and Roger says he's the baby's father, the paternity notwithstanding.
The Fiery Cross
The Frasers attend Jocasta's wedding where a slave ends up dead and Claire suspects foul play. Upon investigating, they figure out it was one of Jocasta's would-be suitors whose advances she rebuffed. He also attacked Jocasta and her husband-to-be, Duncan. But he was not connected to the men looking for "the Frenchman's gold," a reference to money sent by Louis XV of France to help in Charles Stuart's rebellion.
Back at Fraser's Ridge, Claire starts improving her medical supplies by cultivating her own penicillan from moldy bread. It saves Jamie's life when he is bitten by a snake while hunting.
Much of The Fiery Cross is actually focused on those around Claire, while she works to be the best 18th-century doctor she can be. But at the end of the book, she, Brianna, and Roger all confess to Ian that they're from the future.
A Breath of Snow and Ashes
Claire holds down the homestead while Jamie must go off to act as an "Indian agent" for the government, which culminates in him helping start a Committee of Safety (one of the first forms of local government in the United States). On a trip to the malting shed (where they are making their own whiskey), Claire is attacked and kidnapped by a group of criminals that includes a fellow time-traveler named Wendigo Donner from 1968.
While captive, Claire is assaulted and raped. She manages to escape and Jamie, Ian, Fergus, and Co. slaughter most of the men who kidnapped her.
As she continues her medical practice, Claire manages to make her own ether and eventually uses it to perform a successful appendectomy on a sick young boy. She also treats people for a devastating plague, saving as many as she can.
Eventually Claire's medical prowess begins to be seen as a kind of witchcraft. When a young pregnant girl named Malva is found dead, Claire tries to save the unborn baby, which lands her in jail on trial for murder. The only thing that saves Claire is the governor's need for a midwife for his wife. Due to rising political tensions in New Bern (the Revolutionary War is less than a year away at this point), Claire poses as the governor's wife so that his real wife may be smuggled out in the middle of the night.
Eventually Malva's father confesses to her murder, and Claire is exonerated and allowed to return to Fraser's Ridge. A few months pass, and Brianna gives birth to a daughter, Amanda, whom Claire says has a heart murmur that will require surgery - surgery she cannot perform safely in 1776. So Brianna, Roger, and their two children travel back through the stones to the 20th century.
Claire and Jamie continue their lives at Fraser's Ridge until Donner and his companions loot their house looking for gemstones (which aid in traveling through the stones). In the riot, Ian sets the house on fire, trapping all the criminals inside. With their house gone, Jamie says they need to return to Scotland to retrieve his printing press.
An Echo in the Bone
Of course, you know what they say about the best-laid plans of mice and men - they often go awry.
Claire, Jamie, and Ian try to set sail for Scotland, but their ship is stopped by a British naval vessel that presses Jamie and Ian into service. When a second ship attacks the British ship, Jamie is forced to join a militia for a while. During the Battle of Saratoga, Claire works as a medic for the militia and must amputate one of Jamie's fingers. At the second Battle of Saratoga, Jamie's cousin, Simon Fraser, is killed. Simon's general asks Jamie to take Simon's body back to Scotland for a proper burial, so Jamie, Claire, and Ian finally set sail for home.
They arrive at Lallybroch to find that young Ian's father, Ian Sr., is dying, but Claire soon receives a letter from Marsali back in Philadelphia, asking her to come perform life-saving surgery on Marsali and Fergus's youngest, a boy named Henri-Christian. Claire and young Ian return to America, while Jamie stays behind to be with Ian and Jenny while Ian passes.
After Ian's death, Jenny decides to go to America with Jamie, but they miss the boat they initially were meant to be on and must take another one. When the first boat sinks, everyone in America (Claire, Ian, Lord John) think that Jenny and Jamie have perished at sea because they haven't gotten word of the travel plans changing. A British captain wants to then arrest Claire as a spy, so she marries Lord John for protection. The two eventually become intimate - not because they love each other, but out of their shared grief for Jamie.
Written in My Own Heart's Blood
Jamie and Claire are finally reunited (again) and reconcile, even though Jamie has a lot of feelings to work through about Claire and Lord John. But as the country is in the throes of the Revolutionary War, Claire and Jamie don't have much choice but to join the fight.
They join General Washington's army, but within a month Claire is shot, and Jamie resigns his post to stay with her as she recovers. They eventually decide to return to Fraser's Ridge, but are waylaid by the death of Henri-Christian, who dies in a fire in Fergus's print shop. The grieving Frasers and Murrays move to Savannah, GA, to start again, but when the British invade the city, Jamie takes Claire, Ian, Ian's wife Rachel, Jenny, and Fergus's eldest son, Germain, back to Fraser's Ridge. Fergus, Marsali, and their two daughters remain in Savannah.
Back at Fraser's Ridge, the man who raped Claire those many years ago when she was captive appears. Jamie leaves to find him and kill him, while Brianna, Roger, and their two children show back up at Fraser's Ridge.
While Claire has been embroiled in the Revolutionary War, Brianna and Roger have been having a time-traveling adventure of their own that involves Jemmy being kidnapped and all of them ending up decades farther back in time than they meant to go, 1739. But they are eventually able to find each other and get back to Claire and Jamie. And that's where the latest book ends.
If Outlander manages to go eight seasons, suffice to say that there is still plenty of action and adventure in store for the characters.

10 Tips to Snag a First-Class Ticket Upgrade
The majority of airline passengers fly coach, but a small percentage of the population regularly enjoys first-class accommodations on airplanes. While these passengers may be loaded and able to afford the costly tickets, the price is still beyond the bucket for a majority of flyers. So, how are those who may not be swimming in wealth able to snag the luxurious upgrade? Alex Matjanec, CEO of MyBankTracker, has compiled a list of 10 tips to secure a first-class airline ticket upgrade.
1. Be Loyal to One Airline
Loyalty always counts. Most people who join frequent flier programs don't actually fly very frequently. The typical thought process is to sign up for every frequent flier or loyalty program in hopes of saving money across the board. Frequent flier programs don't work like grocery frequent shopper cards, however.
So instead of being a frequent flier member who only racks up a handful of miles on any individual airline, focus all of your efforts on being loyal to one airline. The tickets may cost a little more every so often, but the long-term benefits of stockpiling miles for one company can upgrade your travel to first class.
2. Arrive Late/Early
Airlines recommend arriving at the airport and checking in at least 30-60 minutes before a flight (longer for larger international airports). This is because it takes time to check baggage, pass through security, and arrive at the departure gate.
However, showing up early allows you time to have a casual chat with the gate agent without a large crowd. This is the time where you can build a rapport and ask about an upgrade to first class without other people around whom the airline risks upsetting.
Flights are often overbooked, and by arriving late (though don't arrive too late), you'll probably be bumped to a later flight, at which time you can ask for a first-class upgrade to make up for the inconvenience.
3. Travel During Slow Times
Instead of flying near the holidays and weekends with everyone else, book your flights at the right time - such as in the middle of the week. FareCompare, an airline tracking website, points out the most unpopular days to fly are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday, while dawn, dusk, and red-eye flights are the least popular.
These are the flights that are most likely to have empty seats, meaning there's availability in first class.
Also, look throughout the year for times people don't typically fly. For example, a flight on Thanksgiving Day is much more likely to have availability than flights on the Wednesday prior or Friday after. This, of course, assumes overbooked passengers from previous flights haven't already filled up the plane.
4. Complain About Something
At the end of the day, airlines are customer-serving businesses like any other. This means they'll go out of their way to please a customer and ensure you continue coming back to use their service. Complaining to the airline about any shortcomings is a first step to first-class accommodations.
Politely pointing out these problems and simply asking to be moved will get you an opportunity at a new seat. If the flight is completely booked, there's a good chance there's still an open seat in first class that you can sit in to make up for the problems.
5. Book Through Airline Websites
Travel booking sites like Kayak, Travelocity, Hotwire, and Expedia seek out the lowest possible rates, which has thinned profit margins for airlines and hotels. While these sites make searching for flights and comparing prices easy, don't use them for the final booking.
Instead, after determining which flight is the cheapest bet, log in to that airline's official website and book the flight directly through them. This shows up on their system when checking in, and you'll be treated as a loyal customer who appreciated the airline's marketing as opposed to just another value shopper booking through a discount digital travel agent.
6. Check Emails After Booking
After booking your flight, keep an eye on your emails. The airline will know ahead of time whether the flight is overbooked and will offer more and more aggressive discounts to those wishing to upgrade to first class via email.
Of course, the airline is unable to email customers who used a third-party travel booking site, so you'll be one of a small minority of people receiving these emails for your specific flight. Regardless of who sits where, the airline has to take off on a set schedule, so the closer an overbooked flight gets to departure time, the more drastic discounts are applied to first-class upgrades.
7. Use a Travel Rewards Card
Travel rewards credit cards are a great way to stockpile frequent flier miles without necessarily having to travel. Here are a few of the best travel rewards cards on the market:
With Capital One Venture Rewards Card, you earn two miles for any airline per dollar spent on any purchase, with a $35 annual fee, and with Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, you earn two miles per dollar spent on travel and restaurants, with a $95 annual fee. Points are worth 25 percent more if booked through Chase.
Discover It Miles Card users earn 1.5 miles per dollar spent, which are doubled at the end of the first year for no annual fee. In addition, they receive an annual $30 in-flight WiFi credit and enjoy no blackout dates as points are tracked in-house by Discover, not any particular airline.
8. Phone a Friend
Employees of airlines receive great perks, including the ability to fly standby for free throughout the year and access to the airline's passenger systems. If you don't know someone who works for an airline, it's time to make that friend.
Many airlines have done away with (or severely restricted) these buddy passes in recent years, but working in the airline industry (or knowing someone who does) is still more likely to get you an upgrade to first class, regardless of which airline it is.
9. Fly Solo
Upgrading a single ticket is much easier than upgrading tickets for a family of four. If you're traveling with your family, your best bet is to work together to decide who should be upgraded to first class on each trip, rotating who gets the seat on each trip like a nonviolent Game of Thrones.
10. Fly on Your Birthday
Always remember that pilots, flight attendants, and the gate agent are all people just like you and I. A friendly conversation goes a long way, especially when mentioning special occasions like your birthday being today.
"On a recent trip to Hong Kong, we were upgraded to first class thanks to our charm," said John Heaton, managing director at The Heaton Group. "This can also work if it's your birthday, honeymoon, or anniversary. You won't be upgraded for no reason so make sure you let them know you have a genuine reason to be upgraded and with a bit of luck, they'll be listening."
This Is How All Your Favorite Chefs Roast Turkey
Since PSL season started early this year, it's not too soon to start planning your Thanksgiving menu, now is it? First things first: the turkey. These Food Network stars make it easy to think ahead with their five-star rated roasts. Brined, spice-rubbed, or latticed with bacon - find the turkey that speaks to your rumbling stomach and go from there!
Ree Drummond: Orange-Brined
The Pioneer Woman's five-star turkey is bursting with bright orange flavor. She first brines the turkey with orange peel, then coats it in a compound butter seasoned with orange zest. Talk about salty-sweet!
Get the recipe: roasted Thanksgiving turkey
Patrick and Gina Neely: Spice-Rubbed
If brining isn't your thing, consider patting the turkey with a robust spice rub. Patrick and Gina's recipe calls for refrigerating the spiced-up bird for a full 24 hours so the "flavors can marry."
Get the recipe: oven-roasted turkey
Tyler Florence: Cornbread-Stuffed and Maple-Bacon-Glazed
This iconic recipe from Tyler Florence is epic for a reason: sage butter is tucked in between the skin and the meat of the bird; the cavity is filled with a caramelized onion cornbread stuffing; finally, the bird is topped with a bacon weave and maple glaze that candies as it cooks.
Get the recipe: maple-roasted turkey with sage, smoked bacon, and cornbread stuffing
Alton Brown: Turkey Triangle
Who hasn't experienced the woes of overcooking the white meat to get the dark meat at a safe internal temperature? Alton's solution to avoid this mishap involves this trio: high oven temp, precise timing, and the "turkey triangle": a shield of foil that protects the breasts from drying out. Try this method and there's no going back to low and slow turkey roasting.

Ina Garten: Just Like a Chicken
If Ina's turkey recipe reminds you of her roast chicken recipe, ding-ding-ding, you're correct! Ina says a turkey is "really just like roasting a big chicken." Fresh thyme, butter, and lemon are the essential ingredients.
Get the recipe: perfect roast chicken
Damaris Phillips: Bourbon-Smoked
Bourbon-soaked wood chips smoke this molasses-brined turkey into caramelized perfection. Yes, it takes 24 hours of prep and six hours of cook time, but the moist meat and the crisp skin make it worth the wait.

How to Make Sure Your Turkey's Done If You Don't Have a Thermometer
If you don't have a meat thermometer and would rather not buy one just for Thanksgiving, there are a few steps you can take to make sure your turkey is fully cooked and not overcooked. According to the experts behind the Turkey Talk-Line at Butterball, this is exactly what you need to do to ensure a fully cooked yet still moist bird.
1. Find out the cooking time based on the weight of your turkey.
Using the turkey-cooking calculator is the easiest way to find out how long your turkey will need to cook based on its weight. A 20-pound turkey will take three and a half to four hours to cook at 325°F.
2. Don't peek!
Although it's tempting to check on your turkey, opening the oven only lowers the temperature and prolongs the process, potentially screwing up your initial estimated time. Keep the oven closed until you're about two-thirds of the way through to check on it for the first time. If the turkey breasts are getting too browned too quickly, cover the turkey in a tent of foil. If they don't look browned, feel free to skip that step.
3. Keep your eye on the thigh.
The deepest part of the thigh muscle is the very last part of the turkey to be done. The internal temperature should reach 180°F. To check for doneness without a thermometer, pierce the thigh and pay attention to the juices: if the juices run clear, it's cooked, and if the juices are reddish pink, it needs more time. Put the turkey back in the oven and check again after a short time.
Could Kate Middleton's Faux Lob Be a Hint Of to What's to Come?
It's no secret that we're all pretty obsessed with Kate Middleton's hair, and her most recent look is no different. During the Duchess's recent appearance at the Remembrance Sunday service on Nov. 12, she debuted a new updo that we can't help but speculate is practice for an upcoming dramatic cut.
She was seen on the balcony with the Countess of Wessex sporting a carefully coiled faux bob under her hat. If you're familiar with the hair conspiracy theory that Kate debuts a new style before a big event, such as having a baby, she may well be practicing before she decides to get the chop for real.
Whether she's testing out the new length ahead of royal baby number three's arrival, or just trying out a faux bob for fun, we're as obsessed with this look as we are all her other styles.
The Perfect Pre-Stuffing, 15-Minute, Full-Body HIIT Workout - No Equipment Needed
It's the most wonderful time of the year - the turkey is roasting in the oven while the apple pie cools, and you can almost taste the buttery mashed potatoes that are about to be piled onto your plate. Before you hoe into your much-deserved, outrageously delicious Thanksgiving meal, though, why not steal away 15 minutes and get your body ready for the feast?
This HIIT workout is the perfect sweat session to fit in prior to sitting down at the table with all your family and friends. Hell, you might as well invite them to work out with you! You don't need any equipment, after all.
The Workout
You'll do four bodyweight cardio exercises in a row for 30 seconds each. Then you'll take a full minute of rest to catch your breath and recover. Repeat this cycle four more times for a total of 15 minutes. These are the exercises you'll be doing:
You'll pretty much work your whole body during this workout, and you'll feel your heart rate skyrocket pretty quickly. Go as hard as you can since you have a full minute to rest after you complete each cycle - plus, it's only 15 minutes long! Descriptions for each movement follow.

Becca's New Highlighter Palette Just Dropped - Here's How to Use It
Chances are, we don't need to tell you how great Becca's highlighters are. From its mini powders to its shiny lip glosses, the beauty-girl-favorite brand is beloved for giving users an out-of-this-world glow. So get out your wallets, because there's a new, limited-edition Becca palette in town - and it's going to light you up something fierce.
But as with adding any new release into your rotation, there may be a learning curve. The Becca Light Waves Palette ($34), which includes three Shimmering Skin Perfectors, might take a little getting used to. The hues are Moonstone, a gold; Prismatic Amethyst, a lavender; and the brand-new, exclusive-to-Light Waves Pink Sapphire, a chrome peach.
How, exactly, do you get these powders to look as pretty on your face as the colors do in the pans? Becca Global Style Director Kerry Cole gave us some ideas for getting the most out of Light Waves. According to Cole, Moonstone looks great when applied wet on the cheekbones or as a base eye shadow coat. She also loves layering Prismatic Amethyst over a colored lip gloss or swiping it over the tip of a wet coat of mascara for a frosty, textured lash look. Cole recommends using the newbie Pink Sapphire as a topcoat for your favorite blush. She also advised applying it over a clear lip gloss, because it omits a twinkling pop of pink that's the stuff Winter princess dreams are made of.
Of course, this is all just a road map; the final look is up to you, and (as always) experimentation is encouraged! But you won't be able to play around forever - like we said, this palette is limited edition, so sweep it up while you can.

A Child Allegedly Destroyed $1,000 of Makeup at Sephora, and I Am Unwell
You know when you're watching a horror movie and you have to remind yourself that it's not real? Well, prepare to do that now. In the post below, you can see a rack of completely decimated Make Up For Ever products at Sephora. It's full-on cosmetics carnage, and for beauty junkies, this could classify as graphic content. Before your soul aches, please remember these powders are just store testers. No one was ever going to buy this makeup. (Still hurts, though.)
According to makeup artist Brittany Nelson, we're looking at $1,300 worth of MUFE all destroyed at the hands of one rowdy child.
As Nelson wrote on Facebook, "I'm sure [the child] thought [the powders] were like finger paints and had no idea how naughty they were being. Tons of destroyed product and pissed Sephora cast members are a not a happy place to be. Mammas, please shop for your makeup without your tiny humans." Nelson then went on to divulge that she brings her daughter to Sephora from time to time but imposes a strict "hands in pockets" rule on the kiddo.
Predictably, backlash was swift, and Twitter had a lot of feelings:

If You Wanna Build a Bigger Booty, Here's the Secret You Need to Know
It seems like everyone these days is itching to know what it really takes to build a booty. We see many different before-and-after photos on Instagram featuring impressive booty gains, leaving us wondering what has to change in our fitness routines in order to make that happen for ourselves.
As someone who has built her booty from the ground up, Diksha Gautham, NPC bikini bodybuilding competitor and NASM Certified Personal Trainer in progress, knows firsthand what kind of work it takes. "Muscle growth occurs when you put your muscles under stress and tension," Diksha told POPSUGAR. "So if you want your booty to grow, you gotta stress it out with the resistance training!"
These are the five glute exercises that almost always show up in Diksha's training program:
"The combination of all these movements hits all three main 'zones' of your glutes," Diksha explained. "These are all also compound movements, meaning they work a lot of muscles at once, so you burn a lot of calories."
The most important thing to keep in mind, though, is that you can't achieve visible booty gains without increasing the weights you're working with. "As your body adapts, make sure to continue pushing your booty by adding weight, increasing volume, or increasing the frequency which you train it," Diksha told POPSUGAR. In other words, the secret to growing your butt is constantly surprising your glutes with new challenges.
If any of this feels intimidating, Diksha recommends you do a couple sessions with a personal trainer, just to learn the form of compound lifts, like squats and deadlifts. After getting a solid baseline, you can continue to work on all these exercises on your own. "Don't feel intimidated," Diksha said. "Everyone was a beginner once."

It's a fun and pretty present that your child can customize with even more miniature items.

This 4-Year-Old Girl Donated Her Piggy Bank Money to a Police Officer Battling Cancer
This may just look like an adorable photo of a little girl wearing a police officer uniform, but the reason behind it is even more heartwarming. Four-year-old Sidney Fahrenbruch donated her piggy bank money to Officer Kyle Zulauf of the Longmont Police Department, who is currently battling cancer. Officer Zulauf was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a year and a half ago, according to Today. The Longmont Police Department in Longmont, CO, has been raising money to help with a surgery the officer needs, and Sidney wanted to make sure to contribute.
Sidney is pictured here with another officer, David Bonday, because she's no stranger to the Longmont Police Department. As a little girl with a big heart, she has made visits on a weekly basis to the department for the past couple years, bringing officers sweet treats and even taking water to an officer directing traffic on a hot day. Sharing a sweet background story along with photos on its Facebook page, the Longmont Police Department wrote, "Many of you will recall Sidney, who made national news when Longmont Police Officer Bonday came to her house to search out and remove monsters in her new home. Today, Sidney was back at the department with a different purpose. She brought the contents of her piggy bank for Officer Bonday to provide to our fundraiser for one of our officers who has been diagnosed with cancer. Words are not available for what this means to us."
The piggy bank donations from Sidney amounted to about $9 in bills and half a bag of change. "It's the nice thing to do," Sidney told Today. Her mother said, "She wanted to save the money for a toy but decided someone needed it more than her."
If You Have a Daughter, Please Read the Girl Scouts' PSA About Consent Before the Holidays
In light of the upcoming holiday season, Girl Scouts released a powerful reminder about the meaning of consent for young girls, and it should be required reading for anyone who has a daughter. In the spot-on PSA - titled "Reminder: She Doesn't Owe Anyone a Hug. Not Even at the Holidays." - the nonprofit organization delved into the idea that insisting your daughter show a relative some sign of affection in return for a gift can actually have a negative psychological impact down the line.
"Have you ever insisted, 'Uncle just got here - go give him a big hug!' or 'Auntie gave you that nice toy, go give her a kiss' when you were worried your child might not offer affection on her own? If yes, you might want to reconsider the urge to do that in the future," the Girl Scouts' post read.
The reasoning for asking parents to cease doing so is quite clear: it may instill in your daughter the notion that she "owes" people physical affection in return for things, which could be problematic in the future. "Telling your child that she owes someone a hug either just because she hasn't seen this person in a while or because they gave her a gift can set the stage for her questioning whether she 'owes' another person any type of physical affection when they've bought her dinner or done something else seemingly nice for her later in life," the PSA read.
The reminder also quoted Girl Scouts developmental psychologist Dr. Andrea Bastiani Archibald, who explained how though the concept of consent may seem like something that "doesn't pertain to children," the lessons a girl learn at a young age "last a lifetime and can influence how she feels about herself and her body as she gets older." Instead of forcing your child to hug or kiss a relative, Girl Scouts encouraged parents to "give your girl space to decide when and how she wants to show affection," which can translate to nonphysical methods like a smile or air kiss.

Facebook Shares 6 Insider Tips For Selling Items on Its New Marketplace
For years, we've relied on Craigslist to get rid of those gently used items we no longer need while making a few bucks in the process. Then, Facebook decided to shake everything up by launching Facebook Marketplace - and we have to say, we're impressed. It allows you to use your existing Facebook account to create fast and easy item listings, then share them with a built-in audience of local Facebook users. No more messy listing logins or time spent blindly fielding phone calls and emails from totally random people. The entire buying and selling process has been simplified and centralized.
But before we said "bye-bye" to our belongings on Facebook, we decided to check in with the social media giant to get the best tips and tricks for selling our secondhand treasures for top dollar. Check out Facebook Marketplace's selling insights below:
- Use Clear Photos: Make sure your images are in focus and give a good look at the actual item - not a manufacturer's photo - and its condition. When possible, Facebook also recommends including multiple shots of the actual item rather than one single image.
- Price Competitively: Facebook Marketplace has a nifty feature that automatically shows you what similar items are selling for nearby. It recommends you use this to ensure that your item's pricing is aligned. For more info, you can even search to see what other people are selling the same item for.
- React to Data: Facebook Marketplace allows you to see how many people have viewed your item, and it recommends you pay attention to this number. If your item is being overlooked, it could be a sign that you need to lower the price or add more info or images to the listing.
- Sell Seasonally: If you want to make top dollar, then sell items when they're most in demand; for example, you'll get the best response to warm coats, costumes, soccer equipment, and cozy home accents in the Fall when buyers are in need of them.
- Check Out Buyers: Before meeting up with a buyer, ensure that they're reputable by taking a look at their public Facebook profile. Here, you can see if you have any mutual friends who can vouch for the person or if there are any red flags you should be wary of.
- Expand Your Audience: If you're willing to ship an item, consider expanding your audience beyond your local area. You can do this by choosing to make your item visible in any buy and sell group you're a member of.

Here's What - and When - to Eat Before Working Out
When it comes to working out, it's important to feel energized, but it's not always as simple as grabbing a snack on your way out the door. Eating too close to exercise is a recipe for discomfort, but heading to the gym hungry isn't ideal either.
To learn how to maximize the potential of a workout, I spoke with nutritionist Heidi Skolnik, MS, CDN, FACSM, and author of Nutrient Timing for Peak Performance ($20) to find out what to eat and when before heading to the gym.

LaCroix Hair Is a Thing, Because of Course It Is
With only 54 days left in the year, we've reached peak 2017. That's because LaCroix hair is officially a thing, and honestly, I'm a little shocked it took this long for Instagram's most famous beauty trend (rainbow hair) to get it on with the app's soft drink of choice.
LaCroix hair comes courtesy of a project the brand Scruples Hair Care dreamed up with eight stylists. The theme of the looks is titled LaCroix Before Boys, and it should probably be your new life motto. (That rhyming catchphrase also ends the age-old debate on how the drink should be pronounced - it's La-CROY, people.)
Even if you don't drink sparkling water, you'll love the looks, which are rainbow-hair perfect. So crack open a fizzy Pamplemousse and take a gander at the most #millennial thing you'll see all day.
