Your 2-Week Sugar Detox
Let's not sugarcoat this (really): millions of Americans have a weight problem. One study predicts that more than 85 percent of adults will be overweight or obese by the year 2030. The culprit? Sugar. Added sugars and refined carbohydrates both have the same negative impact on our bodies. Studies are finding that sugar consumption is linked to chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, liver disease, and depression.
As a society, we are addicted, literally. Sugar has been found to be as addictive as illicit drugs such as cocaine. Men, women, and children alike are consuming alarming amounts of sugar each year. It's in almost every processed food that we find.
The Big Question
Do you have uncontrollable cravings for pizza, chocolate, chips, cookies, ice cream? In a study, Dr. Nicole Avena of the Icahn School of Medicine lists those as the "big offenders." Avena attests that these foods "share pharmacokinetic properties (e.g. concentrated dose, rapid rate of absorption) with drugs of abuse."
Other signs that you consume too much sugar:
- You eat sugary, refined, processed foods even if you aren't truly hungry.
- You feel bloated and overly full due to overeating.
- You are hungry for the same junk food in a short period of time after eating.
Are you experiencing any or all of these symptoms? If so, it's time to take action. There are many experts, including Dr. Mark Hyman and Brooke Alpert, who will attest that you have to quit sugar completely. Doctors suggest that you treat unhealthy eating patterns just as you would any type of addiction and quit sugar cold turkey. You can help yourself by completing this two-week sugar detox that we put together with the help of Alpert.
Your 14-Day Sugar Detox Plan
It's time to get clean. First, let's address the truth: this won't be easy. You may feel sugar withdrawal, but once you get through this sugar detox, you could change your life, your health, your physique, your mood, and your energy levels forever.
Week 1:
On Alpert's plan, the first three days you will go without any added sugars including artificial sweeteners. The first four days will be the toughest. When cravings become brutal, stop and focus on why you started. Remember that fixing your diet is worth the struggle for long-term health.
Days 1-4 Meal Plan
For the first four days, you will cut fruit, dairy, and grains altogether. They can be slowly added back in after the initial portion of the detox.
Breakfast
- 3 whole eggs (made any way you choose). If you scramble them or make an omelet, add spinach, bell peppers, or other green veggies for flavor. Just no cheese!
- Turkey sausage
- Coffee - black
Snack
- 1 oz. raw nuts - almonds, cashews, or walnuts are excellent choices - OR celery sticks with almond butter or peanut butter (2 tablespoons)
- Water
Lunch
- 6-8 ounces any lean white meat (turkey, chicken, fish)
- Veggies - Eat all you want. Just choose from the nonstarchy varieties such as broccoli, spinach, green beans, cauliflower, or squash (no peas, potatoes, or carrots).
- Unsweetened tea (no artificial sweeteners)
Snack
- Celery sticks or cucumbers with hummus (1.5 ounces) OR 3 hard-boiled eggs with salt and pepper
- Water
Dinner
- 6-8 ounces any lean white meat (turkey, chicken, fish)
- Veggies - Eat all you want. Just choose from the nonstarchy varieties such as broccoli, spinach, green beans, cauliflower, or squash (no peas, potatoes, or carrots).
- Water
On day 4, Alpert says it's time to add an apple, one dairy product, and some starchy vegetables like corn or peas as sides to your lunch or dinner. You can do this each day throughout the first week.
Days 5-7 Meal Plan
Breakfast
- Use the same breakfast from above, but you can add 1-1.5 oz. cheese OR a side of Greek yogurt (no reduced-fat yogurt, no fruit bottom or blends - just plain, Greek yogurt).
Snack
- Celery sticks or cucumbers with hummus (1.5 ounces) OR 3 hard-boiled eggs with salt and pepper OR 1/2 cup berries (blueberries, raspberries, strawberries)
- Water
Lunch
- 6-8 oz. any lean white meat (turkey, chicken, fish)
- Water
Dinner
- 6-8 oz. any lean white meat (turkey, chicken, fish)
- Veggies - Eat all you want. Just choose from the nonstarchy varieties such as broccoli, spinach, green beans, cauliflower, or squash (no peas, potatoes, or carrots).
- Water
Week 2:
The second week, you get to add more to your plate. Alpert attests that it's now time for one serving of berries and an extra dairy product. You may also add vegetables such as sweet potatoes or your favorite squash.
By now, changing your diet should be getting a bit easier. Stick with it! Mind over matter.
Days 8-14
Breakfast
- 3 eggs and one serving of oatmeal with 1/2 cup berries
- Black coffee
Snack
- 1 oz. raw nuts - almonds, cashews, walnuts - OR celery sticks with almond butter or peanut butter (2 tablespoons)
- Water
Lunch
- 6-8 oz. any lean white meat (turkey, chicken, fish)
- Veggies - Eat all you want. Just choose from the nonstarchy varieties such as broccoli, spinach, green beans, cauliflower, or squash (no peas or potatoes).
- Unsweetened tea (no artificial sweeteners)
Snack
- Celery sticks, cucumbers, carrots, or whole-wheat crackers with 1.5 ounces hummus OR 3 hard-boiled eggs with salt and pepper
- Water
Dinner
- 6-8 oz. any lean white meat (turkey, chicken, fish)
- Veggies - Eat all you want. Just choose from the nonstarchy varieties such as broccoli, spinach, green beans, cauliflower, or squash.
- Add 1 cup quinoa or brown rice with a teaspoon of butter OR 4 oz. sweet potato with 1 teaspoon butter
- Water
After week two, you can add starchy vegetables back in with your lunch and dinner. You may also add one serving of a clean carb to your lunches. Your lunch and dinner options would look the same after the two-week plan is over.
How to Stick With It
The way you eat must become a lifestyle. Think like an athlete. Sarah Chadwell, CPT and bodybuilder, told POPSUGAR that you should "always be conscious of what you're eating, what mood you're in when you're eating, and whether or not you're truly hungry. If you stick with a five-meal-per-day plan and eat every three hours, you should never feel deprived."
Remember that food is to nourish your body, not harm it. It seems that in our culture we celebrate everything with food. Food should not be seen as a reward. That's not how an athlete looks at food. For them, it's simply fuel for our bodies. When you learn to view it as an energy source instead of a reward or way to celebrate, eating healthfully will become easier and then become habitual.
It takes time to adopt new habits, but it's possible. How? Become the person who brings the healthy dish to every get-together. If you are struggling, hire a health or wellness coach. Join an online support group with others who are completing a sugar detox. Get your family and friends on board so that those around you are all eating the same things. There's power in numbers. Remind yourself of how good you feel and how much your health is improving. If you let it, this sugar detox can help you make a permanent change and you will live a longer, healthier life.

This Easy DIY Proves Anyone Can Do Pin Curls Like a Pro
While I adore my curling iron (and wouldn't go on a vacation without it!), there is something to be said for being able to travel light. That's why pin curls are such an awesome solution. All you need is a bit of hair balm to create hold, bobby pins, and a blow dryer (though you can also just rely on the air and time, if needed). How easy and minimal is that?
If this technique seems intimidating, then don't worry. Hair pro Gina Schiappacasse of Hairstory, a cool downtown members-only salon, has broken down the steps in this easy tutorial. The result: those messy-sexy beach waves you crave. Keep reading, and prepare to be floored by how simple it is to do.
The Most Popular Lipstick on Pinterest Only Costs $8
True life: I'm a prestige beauty brand sucker. I'm fancy and fabulous, which means that I've paid upward of $50 for one single lipstick. Yes, it's too much. Do I regret it? Absolutely not - my lips looked totally fire. However, according to Pinterest, one of the best and most popular shades out there retails for a very affordable $9.
As Allure reports, the photo-sharing website has noticed a spike in interest for L'Oréal Paris Infallible Paints in Spicy Blush ($9). Although it's definitely more of a lacquer than your traditional lipstick bullet, this shade has won fans over with its opaque coverage and shiny, almost vinyl-esque finish.
As one Target reviewer wrote, "I think [Spicy Blush] is a perfect color on any skin tones. It's just a perfect color for anyone, really." According to another, "These lip paints are gorgeous with amazing color payoff . . . I don't feel the need to reapply excessively." Can we get a "hell yeah" for a lunch-proof shine?
What's more, the rose hue is crazy-versatile. It's subdued and dusty enough for Fall and Winter, but just bright enough once Spring comes around again. It's almost like the white button-down shirt of lip paints - an old, reliable go-to that looks chic and polished.

17 Photos That Prove Blond Works on Every Skin Tone
We tend to be so attached to our hair that even the merest cut or trim can spark months of mourning until the lost inches grow back. That's even more true when it comes to color. Despite the popularity of bright hair color trends inspired by everything from Fruity Pebbles to candy floss, the idea of going blond is still a bold move many shy away from. If you're on the fence about adopting the bold color, let your inhibitions go and let the following beauties inspire you to become a bottle blond.
Cure Your Skin Care Woes and Pumpkin Cravings With a DIY Face Mask
It's officially pumpkin season! Sure, you're already hooked on pumpkin spice lattes and have made a date in your calendar to find the perfect jack o'lantern, but are you aware of the benefits that this iconic squash can provide to your skin? Packed with zinc, antioxidants, and vitamins, pumpkins protect your skin from wrinkles and age spots as well as gently exfoliating for a more radiant complexion. Don't have a pumpkin patch nearby? You can get this orange fruit (yup, it's a fruit!) in a can at your local supermarket.
- Make your base: Whisk together about 1/4 cup of pumpkin and one whole egg. The yolk adds nourishment while the white provides a subtle tightening effect to sagging skin.
- Dry skin additive: Add a few teaspoons of honey, which not only seals in moisture, but prevents breakouts thanks to its antibacterial properties.
- Oily skin additive: For an astringent effect, mix in a splash of apple cider or cranberry juice.
- Apply: Smooth the pumpkin-y potion over your face, relax for 15 to 20 minutes, and rinse to reveal a brighter, firmer, smoother complexion.

Taylor Swift's Reputation Is Now Streaming on Spotify - Are You Ready For It?
It's been three weeks since Taylor Swift dropped Reputation. The pop icon kept a steady build-up to the new album ever since late August, when she released her first single, "Look What You Made Me Do." From there, we got a new music video, a second single called ". . . Ready For It" (also with a music video), and then "Gorgeous" and a final single, "Call It What You Want." While the full album hit shelves on Nov. 10, Swift had yet to release it on any major streaming services - until now. Variety reported Reputation would hit streaming services on Friday, and now we can confirm the album is streaming for your listening pleasure.
Swift's complicated past with streaming platforms is not a secret. In 2014, the pop star pulled all her music from Spotify and wrote a letter to Apple Music. The entire Taylor Swift catalog was unavailable until she added everything back in June . . . which, by the way, was suspiciously timed to the release of Katy Perry's new album, Witness. Since then, all of the new singles from Reputation were made available for streaming on the nights of their respective releases. It seems like everything's been smoothed over.
This Woman's Story About Helping Another Mom at Target Proves It Takes a Village to Raise Kids
Every parent needs a teensy bit of time to themselves every now and then, and that's exactly what Jess Johnston, a mother of four, had in mind when she climbed into her car sans kids and headed to the place where she could truly be alone with her thoughts: Target. But sometimes the universe has something else in store no matter how carefully you plan, and that was the case when Jess stumbled upon a mom who was struggling with her three kids in the checkout line that afternoon. She recounted why it's important to stand in solidarity with other moms in her blog, Wonderoak.
"I am not used to being the one who is not the parent of the screaming child. This was uncharted territory," she wrote. "I identified with her painfully and I wanted desperately to affirm her. I wasn't sure what to do except smile and look as nonjudgmental as possible. I tried to think of what I could say, like, should I shout above the screaming, 'YOU'RE AMAZING!!' Or should I go in for a fist bump, 'You got this!!'"
Fortunately for Jess, she got her chance to help the struggling mama out and wasted no time jumping at the chance. "Before I could process what my awesome, pro-mom, non-judgey response was going to be the mom turned to me with desperate eyes, 'I'm sorry, um, can you hold her?' She held out her crying infant towards me. 'YES!' I said eagerly. As I took her precious one in my arms, the little girl made eye contact and then wailed. I bounced her gently and put her pacifier back in her mouth, feeling such an intense solidarity with this mama."
Jess went on to explain that she's lost count of exactly how many times she's felt helpless in similar situations - after all, having one crying kiddo in public is hard enough - and sometimes you just need an extra set of hands. "I have been the woman in the checkout line more times than I can count. I've stood sweating in this woman's exact position, barely commanding the tears to wait until I got to my car," she said. "I've felt my face grow red and hot as my toddler screamed and kicked, waking up my baby who was angry and ready to nurse. I've felt so alone and so out of control."
Jess explained to POPSUGAR that when push came to shove, helping her fellow mom out was actually a "healing" experience for her. "There is something about moms helping moms and being a part of a village that is so powerful to me. She trusted me even though I was a stranger, and that was a gift."

What Diversity and Inclusion in Modeling Means to 9 Victoria's Secret Angels
With 55 models representing 20 countries cast in the 2017 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in Shanghai, it was bound to be the most diverse cast yet. And when we spoke with the models backstage before they show, they were feeling empowered by these stats.
Plus, lead hairstylist Anthony Nadar and Tom Pecheaux made sure to embrace the models' natural beauty and features. For hair, Nadar gave most models glam bombshell waves using a blow dryer, extensions, and a curling iron. While this style looks gorgeous on many, it can damage natural hair. So anyone who has curly hair was able to rock their god-given texture. On the makeup side, Pecheaux cocktails Victoria's Secret Velvet Matte Lio Cream Stains to create bespoke nude shades for each model.
Here, nine models weighed in on what being in the most diverse roster yet means to them.

The 6 Things I Do Every Sunday to Stay Healthy All Week
My Sundays are definitely not a day of rest. Far from it. It's the one day I devote to getting everything ready for my healthy week ahead. Take a glimpse into my Sunday. It may sounds a little nuts to jam-pack this much on a weekend day, but it sets me up for success. I know that if I don't plan ahead, I'm looking at skipped workouts and bowls of cereal for dinner.
Morning Workout
An early morning workout is a must for me on Sundays, not only because I teach a 9 a.m. Power Vinyasa class, but even if I didn't, I'd still make it a priority to get in a workout first thing. It energizes me all day, ensures I don't skip out, and gets me into the working-out mindset I want to continue throughout the week.
Meal Planning
I used to head to the grocery store with a big list of healthy foods. I found that not only would I grab things that never got used (RIP bunches of asparagus), but since I had no set plan, every day was a little stressful trying to scramble healthy meals together. Oftentimes I'd get home from picking up the kids at 5 p.m. and just make pasta and a bag of frozen veggies because it was easiest.
Now I take time to plan out my meals. Breakfast is simple - just a protein and greens smoothie or overnight oats. Lunch is a big salad, and I do something basic but healthy for each dinner of the week.
Here's an example of my weekly dinner plan:
Sunday: Potato Leek and White Bean Soup
Monday: Quinoa and Black Beans With Green Beans and Broccoli
Tuesday: Tofu, Veggie, and Rice (or Farro) Stir-Fry
Wednesday: Maple-Cumin Lentils Over Spaghetti Squash
Thursday: Avocado Pasta With Edamame, Tomatoes, and Roasted Cauliflower
Friday: Black Bean, Corn, and Roasted Sweet Potato Burritos
Saturday: Homemade Pizza With Roasted Mushrooms, Red Peppers, Tomatoes, Basil, and Tofu
I even write it out on a big chalkboard that I keep in my kitchen, so I can quickly glance at it in the morning and know what I need to do to get dinner done later.
Grocery Shop
Once I know what I'm making, I hit up the local grocery store as well as Trader Joe's (I love its marinated tofu and dairy-free mozzarella shreds!). I bring the kiddos along so we can not only spend time together, but so I can also teach them about healthy eating. I find if they help choose what to throw in the cart, they're more likely to eat it.
Meal Prep
Once I get home and put the groceries away, it's quite a scene in my kitchen with cutting board, knives, tons of glass containers, and veggies laid across my counter. I make 10 salads for the week (want the hubs to eat healthy too!); cut up sweet potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli, and red peppers for roasting; and cut up onions and other veggies for the stir-fry, as well as white potatoes (for that evening's soup). I also cook up one cup of quinoa and one cup of rice to use for dinners later that week. Getting done whatever I can on Sunday makes a huge difference at 5 p.m. when I need to make dinner for my famished family. If I have time, I'll also prep overnight oats for the week or freezer smoothie packs.
Gym Bag Ready
Aside from regular laundry, I make a point to wash all the workout clothes I'll need for the week: sports bras, tops, running and yoga bottoms, and socks. If I'm really on the ball, I'll fold and put these things in my drawers so I can easily grab them for early a.m. workouts.
Workout Schedule
Workouts don't just happen for me since I work and have a family and house to take care of. I have to set aside time, and since my schedule can be different from week to week, it helps to look ahead and jot down on my calendar workout "appointments." It's typically a run with some TRX and yoga from 6 to 7 a.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, then a longer run with my mommy-runner friends on Saturday morning, and yoga Sunday mornings. If it's written in ink on the calendar, it's more likely to happen.

Hillary Clinton's Response to Trump's "Crooked Hillary" Tweet Is the Ultimate Mic Drop
You guys didn't actually think Hillary Clinton would be able to release her latest book in peace without some sort of snide comments about it from Donald Trump, now did you? Just one day after Clinton's memoir, What Happened, became available to the public, POTUS used his favorite method of communication (Twitter, naturally) to revive the "Crooked Hillary" nickname and mock her election loss, which is a main topic in the memoir.
Crooked Hillary Clinton blames everybody (and every thing) but herself for her election loss. She lost the debates and lost her direction!
- Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 14, 2017
The "deplorables" came back to haunt Hillary. They expressed their feelings loud and clear. She spent big money but, in the end, had no game!
- Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 14, 2017
But rather than sit back and allow his criticism to go unnoticed, Clinton fired back with a witty, oh-so-perfect suggestion.
If you didn't like that book, try this one - some good lessons in here about working together to solve problems. Happy to send a copy. http://pic.twitter.com/7dmVJ44mZu
- Hillary Clinton (@HillaryClinton) September 14, 2017
What a burn! On the surface, her response is certainly sassy, but it's about 10 times sassier once you take a closer look and realize that she shared a photo of the new children's version of her bestselling 1996 book - a version that's filled with illustrated pictures aimed at preschool-level kids. Damn, Hillz. We see you! And the rest of the internet certainly took note of her mic-drop-worthy comeback as well.

Golden Milk: The Antidepressant, Debloating, Weight-Loss-Boosting Wonder Drink
Ready to simmer down and give your body a boost before bedtime? We've got the perfect, healthy nightcap for you, and you may have heard of it: golden milk.
Used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine, golden milk is a combination of the powerful spice turmeric, coconut milk, and sometimes coconut oil. Black pepper is often added (in small amounts) to increase the bioavailability of (i.e., your body's ability to absorb) the superspice turmeric. Creamy and spicy, soothing and warm - this delicious drink is more than just a tasty treat. Rich in electrolytes and digestive-aiding properties, your body is going to love every sip.
- Benefits of Turmeric: Turmeric's benefits are so good, one 2013 study said it's almost too good to be true. The anti-inflammatory spice has "shown therapeutic potential against a number of human diseases," including cancer and could even help with Alzheimer's. Because of the reduced inflammation, turmeric can also help with gas, bloating, and digestive discomfort, and some studies have mentioned its help with weight loss. Also, some studies and sites have shown that turmeric has antidepressant properties, leading to better moods, less stress, better sleep, and improved brain health.
- Benefits of Coconut Oil: Similarly, coconut oil can help with digestion and gut health, thanks to its antimicrobial properties (which come from good fatty acids, MCFAs). The healthy fats can also raise your good cholesterol, HDL.
- Benefits of Coconut Milk: Did you know that coconut milk can also help with digestion? It "nourishes the digestive lining" with natural electrolytes and healthy fats, which can improve gut health and help with IBS. Like turmeric, it can help reduce inflammation and even aid in weight loss. MCTs, another kind of fatty acid, are found in coconut milk and help with physical performance - allowing you to build muscle and lose fat.
Ready to mix up a batch? We like flavoring with a little honey or agave and sometimes a bit of vanilla bean or vanilla extract, cinnamon, and ginger. You'll be sweetly sipping your way to health in no time!

How to Create the Perfect Vintage Updo
Vintage hairstyles are eternally popular for weddings no matter the season, but a too-literal interpretation can leave a bride with a serious case of helmet head. So what's the key to borrowing from the past without looking stuck in it? Texture and movement. "The perfectly coiffed updo is outdated," says Dani Weidner, a stylist who worked at Robert James Color in San Francisco. "Imperfect is best."
To balance contemporary trends with a retro influence, Weidner designed this '20s-inspired updo. A defined curl and thick roll give a nod to the past, but the overall look feels fresh and current. It's an ideal style for brides - and it's one you can do at home. To get the look, read on for pictures and step-by-step instructions.
A Double-Duty Hair Idea For Naturally Curly Brides
Sleek looks never go out of style for a formal affair, but if you have curly hair, you'll want to make sure you're applying heat the right way to prevent damaging those delicate strands. So convert your curls into sultry vintage waves, or opt for a more modern asymmetrical updo. Here are two looks you'll love to try this holiday season.

Major Life Hack: You Can Get PSL Oatmeal at Starbucks
I've considered myself extremely well versed in Starbucks hacks, but when our Fitness director Michele Foley told me she had made pumpkin spice oatmeal at the hallowed halls of the green siren, I may or may not have started screaming in our conference room. She has allowed me to share this blessed secret with all of you, so without further ado: Happy holidays and, you're welcome.
The trick? Ask the barista to add some pumpkin spice sauce to your classic oatmeal. That's it! You may or may not know that you can also up the ante by having your barista make your oats with steamed milk, almond milk, coconut milk, or soy milk, depending on your dietary preferences. The result is a creamy flavored oatmeal that has as much holiday spirit as it does health benefits. It's the next best thing to having actual pumpkin pie for breakfast, in our opinion.
You can add as many pumps as you like - the barista will charge you the standard rate in your area for extra syrup. Michele only did one pump and it made her oatmeal nice and subtly spicy (just look at that rich orange color!). She noted that "two is the magic number" and suggested adding nuts and cranberries for a festive addition. Top it off with a little cinnamon and nutmeg from the bar, and you've got an instant gourmet meal.
And fun fact: if you're not into pumpkin, you can totally do this with other syrups and sauces. Maybe cinnamon dolce is more your style, or you're feeling like eggnog for the holidays (you can have them make it with eggnog instead of milk, if you're feeling indulgent). Bon appetit!
How to Get Your First Novel Published (From Someone Who Did It)
Let me start by saying, I'm not an expert. Much of the enigmatic world of publishing is a mystery to me. I'm a novice. A newbie. A greenhorn. You have every right to scoff at me, not trust me, throw my advice out the window, and do your own damn thing!
HOWEVER.
I have somehow managed to wade through the muddy waters of publishing and find my way to the other side, and maybe (maybe!) I have a few tips that might help you navigate your own journey.
1. Write a Really Good Book!
There's a system in place in this scary world of publishing. A system of submissions, agents, more submissions, editors, edits, deadlines, and finally, somewhere down the line, a published product. This system is designed to find the best books being written by writers today and get them out to the public. So, what can you do to hack into this system? The simplest and best way is to write a book that demands to be read, a book that no agent or editor can ignore. This seems like obvious advice, and it is, but I have to mention it, because it is, far and away, the best thing you can do to get yourself published! If you do this, you can pretty much skip the rest of the list.
8 Signs You’re Dating a Writer
2. Keep Improving
It's never too late to learn. Even incredibly successful authors can always get better. With that in mind, keep improving. Read books on craft. Take classes (I'd recommend this program). Take an internships (like this one). Join a writing group. And, of course, keep reading and writing. Do whatever it takes to make yourself into the best writer you can possibly be.
3. Network
You've probably heard it said that, in the world of publishing, "It's all about who you know." Some agents don't even take submissions from writers who aren't referred to them by someone in the industry. But don't let this discourage you. In fact, take heart, because I myself am a prime example of an author who made it from the dreaded slush pile and into the hands of publishers without any specific "in." However, it doesn't hurt to network. It doesn't hurt to go to events, meet other authors, agents, publishers. Get your hands dirty, make connections, attend conventions, force yourself to talk to that editor in the corner of the room over there even though you're terrified and sweating through your shirt. And, as I mentioned in the previous step, sign up for writing courses that not only provide instruction from great writers, but also connect authors with agents and editors working in the business. It's not necessarily about who you know, but, let's be honest, it can't possibly hurt!
4. Research
So you've finished your novel. You're ready to send it out into the world and spend the next year waiting for an agent to respond, and by waiting, I mean endlessly refreshing your Gmail until your fingers bleed. But before you spam a hundred different agents, there's a way to vastly improve your chances of a positive reply. And that way is through research. Plumb the internet for agencies (consider starting with New-York-based agencies) and read up on all of their agents. Find the agent that represents books similar to yours, one whose preferences best match your novel's genre. Then, tailor each submission to that agent. Tell them why you're submitting to them, tell them you enjoyed one of their author's novels, show them that you did your research and are submitting your manuscript to them for a very specific reason. This will help get you noticed in an agent's inbox, which is otherwise inundated with authors such as yourself, desperately seeking attention.
5. Don't Quit!
I could try and write something inspirational here about not giving up, believing in your dreams, and all that good stuff . . . instead, all I'll say is: If you CAN quit, do. If you're a writer, you'll understand.
6. Get Lucky
I'm sorry. I wish this weren't the case. But in all honesty, I think there is a healthy dash of luck involved in getting published. You have to write the right book for the right market and get it in front of the right people at the right time. So rub that rabbit's foot, cross your fingers, spit over bridges, and do whatever else you gotta do to get on the right side of the luck goblin.
7. Enjoy the Process
It's easy to get caught up in all of this. To think, if only I get my book published, then I'll be happy. The problem is, living in a world of "if only" is a never-ending cycle. If only I could get an agent. If only my book becomes a bestseller. If only I get that movie deal. If only. If you don't listen to any of the above tips, listen to this one: learn to enjoy the process. You have to love writing, creating, being creative, and expressing yourself. You have to find excitement in treasure hunting for the right agent, in crafting your perfect pitch, and in throwing away that draft and starting again. I'm not saying you have to like getting rejection letters. The minute you love rejection letters is the minute your career is over. Sure, you can use rejection letters to inspire you to improve, but I say HATE those rejections, just don't let them derail you. Be excited that no one can stop you from writing and doing what you love. I truly believe that letting go of the "if only" mentality and enjoying the journey will not only help you become a happier person (and the world needs more happy people), but it really will make you a better writer.

Can Strength Training Reduce Belly Fat? A Scientist Weighs In
While we know that cardio is an excellent way to burn fat, we wanted to know how working with weights can contribute to a whittled middle and washboard abs. So how can we blast belly fat with strength training?
Nicole Aurigemma, physiologist at the Penn State Muscle Biology Lab, told us not only how to burn more calories during a workout (in part by doing some weight training first), but she also gave POPSUGAR insight into how we can flatten our stomachs with some deadlifting, leg presses (crazy, right?), and general resistance training.
Here are four major benefits that come with working with weights and training with some resistance!
- More resistance training, more fat burning. "It has been shown that energy expenditure, as well as fat oxidation, increases after multiple sets of resistance exercise, particularly when larger muscle masses are exercised," said Nicole (larger muscle groups are located in the legs - think glutes, quads, etc!). "Think leg press versus chest press," she said. Who knew that a flat belly starts with the legs?
- Your body is burning more calories. "Post-exercise, your body is using up more of its fuel stores, therefore burning more calories," she explained. So even after you're done with a sweat-sesh in the weight room, your body is burning, burning, burning up the calories!
- Your body uses fat while you're resting, too. "Since resistance exercise increases post-exercise fat oxidation," (fat oxidation = your body breaking down fat into energy) "your body is using more fat. This is very favorable for weight loss." Because, when you say you want to lose weight, you really want to be losing fat and gaining metabolism-boosting muscles.
- You'll see results quickly. Nicole noted that the fat oxidation and fat loss happen quickly, "even after just one gym session." She told POPSUGAR that "increased energy expenditure [burning calories] and fat oxidation [burning fat] last at least 24 hours after [even one session of] exercise, so imagine how much fat you could be using and calories you'll be burning if you have regimented resistance training!"

So let's get this straight, more fat burning, more calorie burning, burning even when you're resting . . . and fast results? Let's grab those weights!
Before you get burnin', a couple things to keep in mind: "You could actually gain a little muscle mass before you start to lose weight," said Nicole, "but this doesn't mean you aren't losing fat mass." She also said it's important to note that "You could lift all you want, but if you eat crap, you won't see results." So while a flat belly is made in the weight room, it's also made in the kitchen. DIY Blake Lively's Braids For the Ultimate Showstopping Style
Blake Lively has a monopoly on the best waves in Hollywood. Her signature loose style is too relaxed to be called curls yet too glam to be dubbed bed head. And whether it took her hairstylist hours to create or she was born this way, it always looks effortless coming down the red carpet. Her texture is so unique that we're just dubbing it "The Blake" - and it may just be more popular than "The Rachel."
Since doing this seemingly natural style can be trickier than it looks, we enlisted the help of celebrity pro and L'Anza ambassador Ammon Carver to unlock the secrets behind Blake's mane. Hint: having extensions and natural waves helps, but it's not a requirement. You'll also need to stock up on texturizing spray.
Then in classic Blake style, we switched it up into a bohemian braided updo - like that epic side plait from a few years ago - so you get two looks for the price of one.

How to Wear Lavender Eye Shadow, Fall 2017's Hottest Celeb-Loved Trend
We've already seen pastel purple highlighters taking off this season, and now the color trend is coming for our eyes too. At the recent InStyle Awards, both Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez arrived wearing matching lavender shadow. But they aren't the only ones: Rita Ora just wore the look at an MTV TRL visit and Rihanna did at one of her Fenty launch parties. Perhaps the trend is a result of lasting influence from the unicorn beauty phenomenon. Perhaps it's premature excitement for Winter's frosty color palettes. Either way, we're 100 percent on board.
"I love that lavender is feminine, edgy, and chic all at the same time. It really pops against brown eyes," celebrity makeup artist Jill Powell, who did Demi's look, told POPSUGAR. Inspired by the singer's lavender dress and "chic rocker vibe," she mixed together two cream shadows to create the vibrant purple hue: Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Color Paint Shadows ($25) in M-90 Matte Purple and I-80 Iridescent Pink Beige. She also layered Amethyst from Kat Von D's Alchemist Holographic Palette ($32) on top to create an iridescent finish.
If you plan to try the look, Jill suggested having the rest of your makeup low-key. "I love to keep focus on one area for the most part. When bringing in colorful shadows, I love to keep the rest of the face more natural so it acts as the backdrop for the colorful shadows," she explained.
Jill also assured that any skin tone can pull off lavender. "Work with the depth of your tones," she advised. "Lighter skin tones should use lighter shades, and deeper skin tones should use deeper hues to coincide with the depth of their skin and avoid looking too light or ashy."
Now that you've got all the expert tricks, see more examples of lavender eye shadow from celebs and shop the trend at every price point ahead.
7 Things People With Clean Kitchens Do Every Day
Do you hate to cook? Do you turn your nose when entering your kitchen and hurry out the door once your microwave beeps, signaling your frozen burrito is ready? And if we're really being honest, have you forgotten the last time you changed out your sponge or scrubbed the stove free of pasta-sauce splatters? It sounds like you have a messy kitchen. Marie Kondo, the New York Times bestselling author of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up sympathizes. That's why she developed a system, which is called the KonMari Method, that allows anyone, even the seemingly hopelessly messy, can take on successfully.
If you're curious about her unique purging technique, read about my experience of using the KonMari Method in my kitchen. After you've trashed all the dishware, cooking tools, and pantry items that don't "spark joy" - aka make you happy when you see, touch, and use them - it's time to take on these daily habits of people with clean kitchens to keep your own space neat without intense effort.
- Keep Everything Off the Kitchen Counter
-
I know, this one seems like a tough one, yet your blender, sugar bowl, coffee maker, and other knickknacky things not only take up space on your counter, but they also actually make it impossible to clean. They gather dust and oily muck on and around them, and you ignore it. The person with a clean kitchen wipes down all appliances, etc. with a warm, damp sponge before storing the items in shelves or cabinets. Yes, even those things they use every day.
- Wipe the Stove, Sink, and Counter With Each Use
-
Marie Kondo says, "Tidying your kitchen means wiping away any water or oil." If there's nothing on your stove, sink, or counter, it suddenly becomes really easy to run a sponge over these areas every day to clean up any splashes or spills. Ta-da! No crumbs or mysterious stains to be seen.
- Keep Dish Soap and Sponges Under the Sink
-
Having tried this out myself, I can attest to its effectiveness. After washing dishes, simply squeeze out the sponge and keep it in a wire sponge holder under the sink along with your soap and rubber gloves. It's a surprising trick to keep your kitchen looking neat and inviting.
- Store the Trash Can Under the Sink
-
There's something off-putting about having a trash can in the middle of the kitchen, even one with a sleek stainless steel design. Storing your trash can under the sink keeps it out of sight and out of mind. I also love taking the trash out more frequently so my kitchen never smells.
- Wash and Dry Dishes Immediately
-
If you have a drying rack in your kitchen, get rid of it! It makes it all too easy to pile on the dishes without ever putting them away, plus the wet drippings pool and grow all sorts of gnarly things. Instead, do as the tidy person does and wash and dry the dishes immediately after a meal.
- Keep About 30 Percent of Your Fridge Empty
-
Ever wonder where you are going to put your leftovers or newly bought groceries? If you always have a few clear spots in your fridge, it makes it easy to find a designated spot for new things.
- Give Each Thing a Definite Home (Away From the Stove)
-
Though it's tempting to want to stash kitchen tools, spices, oils, etc. near the kitchen stove for easy access, this is a recipe for disaster. As things cook, the oil often splatters onto these items. In addition, the heat can drastically reduce the storage life of spices and oils, rendering them stale and rancid. Instead, store everything away from the stove. Before cooking, pull out all the equipment and food stuff you may need, and put each thing away, item by item, after its use. This makes cleanup way easier.
Zodiac Signs Who Make Great Moms, Ranked From BEST to WORST
This article written by Christine Schoenwald was originally featured on one of our favorite sites: YourTango.
How good of a mom are you?
Do you know the zodiac signs who make the best moms? Sure, it's fun to do a ranking, but the truth is that every sign and every mother has their own unique style of mothering and their own special abilities at it. And even your horoscope can point out the best qualities you have for parenting.
When I was in college, there was another student whose mother still not only made her lunch but put positive notes in it such as "I love you" and "I know you'll succeed." I envied that woman for having such a loving and thoughtful mother. My mother stressed things like independence and taking care of oneself - still valuable tools to learn but without the emotional tie-in.
I respect my friends who are moms. They work hard to make sure to raise their kids right. Many of them are single moms and even though they seem to have double the work, they're doing a great job as their children know that their mothers have their back and they'll do anything for them.
Moms need to be so many things for their kids: an advocate, a supporter, a teacher, a caregiver, a driver, and a parent.
Some moms are "cool" and others are more traditional and try to instill those traditional values in their children. I know moms who homeschool and others who spend hours and hours searching for the best school for their children. From what I can tell, being a parent is exhausting, and as rewarding as they seem to believe parenting is, I know there are moments where the parents need a break.
As a parent, you need to provide shelter, food, love, and opportunities for growth. It's a tough job and not everybody is good at handling all the responsibility of being a mother.
But some zodiac signs seem a little more qualified for motherhood than others. Here are the zodiac signs who make the best moms, ranked from best to worst.
- PISCES (February 19 - March 20)
Pisces instill an appreciation of the arts in their children and they encourage their kids to be creative. A Pisces mom's kids will be sensitive, imaginative, and will learn to treat other people with kindness and compassion. Pisces moms will hand down a love of nature, a sense of pride in helping others, and an independent spirit.
The Pisces mom may not know how to teach their children to make their dreams a reality but they will support them the whole way as their children try to figure it out for themselves.

She is occasionally blunt but almost immediately regrets it. Aries moms can be pushy with their kids and sometimes need to be able to listen and really hear what her child wants or doesn't want to do.

A Sagittarius mom can be impulsive - one minute she's in the carpool lane making her way to drop-off, the next she's declaring that it's a beach day instead. Missouri State Congressman Claims "Homosexuals" and "Human Beings" Are Different
Believe it or not, there is an American congressman who genuinely does not understand the definition of human being. Missouri state Representative Rick Brattin, revealed that he believed there is a "distinction" between human beings and people who are gay during a debate over a bill protecting the state's LGBTQ community from discrimination.
In Missouri, citizens can legally be discriminated against based on their sexual orientation. On May 8, state legislators attempted to pass an amendment banning sexual-orientation-based prejudice when Brattin expressed his concern over the proposal.
"When you look at the tenets of religion, of the Bible, of the Quran, of other religions, there is a distinction between homosexuality and just being a human being," Brattin told the House floor. According to The Kansas City Star, Brattin has yet to clarify his statement, although it aligns with his previous push for teaching creationism in public schools.
Brattin's inadequate understanding of elementary biology is not the first time he's demonstrated his supreme ignorance. He was also one of the notorious congressmen who once tried to establish a differentiation between "rape" and "legitimate rape" as it related to an antiabortion bill he proposed. The bill would have required pregnant women to receive the father's written consent before obtaining an abortion except in cases of "legitimate rape" (whatever that means).
Adding insult to injury, the Missouri state legislature passed Senate Bill 43, a law that would make it harder to sue for discrimination. It would force citizens to explicitly prove that bias lead to a dismissal rather than just contributing to it. The fate of the bill now depends on Republican Governor Eric Greitens.
69 F*cking Fantastic Songs From Netflix's She's Gotta Have It
In She's Gotta Have It, the new Netflix series inspired by Spike Lee's 1986 film of the same name, the music featured throughout the show is equally as complex, unpredictable, and consequential as the show's main characters. Set in modern-day Brooklyn, the show follows sexually liberated millennial Nola Darling as she balances romantic relationships with three different men while trying to make a name for herself as an artist, but it's through music, which ranges from jazz standards to reggaeton and neo-soul, that Nola is able to authentically connect with her lovers, her best friends, her identity, and the viewer.
Spike Lee has always understood the role of music in adding dimension to characters and storylines. His musician father, Bill Lee, composed the original soundtrack for the 1986 version of She's Gotta Have It, and Spike personally curated the songs for each of the 10 episodes to accompany the show's score by legendary composer Bruce Hornsby.
While She's Gotta Have It is firmly planted in 2017, the soundtrack, with a few exceptions, is a throwback to hip-hop, soul, and R&B from the '70s through the early '00s. Nostalgia-inducing classic tracks from acts like Maxwell, Stevie Wonder, and Jill Scott are featured so prominently in the show that album covers are often used as transition slides between scenes, and new music by Anthony Ramos, who stars in the series as one of Nola's lovers, Mars Blackmon, can be heard throughout the show.
Check out the music from the first season of She's Gotta Have It below.

Her last job, a highly coveted creative consultant position within the cultural department of a tech giant, is almost certain to attract the attention of most hiring managers. However, there is one significant detail in her application that she knows could repel some potential employers: her 5-month-old baby, Lucia.
Lucia is Chang's daughter with her fiancé, John. Round-cheeked and wide-eyed, the infant is a pleasure at home - but what about in the next cubicle over?
For the past two months, Chang has been applying to any and every position that matches her vast qualifications, but unlike her competition, she's applying with Lucia in tow. Her ideal plan is to bring her infant daughter with her to her new office every day. "I'm being very transparent about my situation," she explains. "Lucia's name has equal billing on my résumé." She even lists her daughter's qualifications - "quiet, observant nature and positive attitude" - on her résumé and in her cover letter in hopes that companies will see Lucia as not just a caveat, but an asset. She's even brought Lucia along to interviews, once in person and once over Skype, with the newborn cooing in the background. The hiring managers greeted Lucia awkwardly, unsure of what to make of the mother-daughter duo, Chang recalls.
This may seem like a pretty unconventional, maybe even bizarre, strategy for job hunting, but in Chang's view, there's no viable alternative. She prioritizes her career and motherhood equally, and she doesn't feel it's fair to have to choose between the two. "One of the most challenging things about becoming a mom for me is figuring out what kind of mom I am and can be to my child," Chang says. "I always thought I would be the kind of mom to get straight back to work. Having a child now has changed everything." For her, that means bringing her baby to work, which, to her, is not such an outlandish request.
Chang is fully aware that she is fortunate to work in a field that could accommodate babies at work and senior enough in her career that she feels comfortable making certain demands of potential employers. And she is more than grateful to have John, who helps with both baby and financial duties, while she job hunts. "I know not everyone is in this position," she acknowledges.
"We are told over and over that women can't have it all, can't be present parents and have a great career. This is not because it's impossible; it's because we don't have systems in place to provide that life."
There are parents who don't have the luxury of requesting such policies and who have to shoulder all responsibilities alone, but Chang hopes that her advocacy for babies-at-work programs will be the first step in shifting the standard in favor of more parent-friendly policies in general.
"Part of why I am pushing for companies to accommodate babies at work is so that more parents have choices in the future," she says. "We are told over and over that women can't have it all, can't be present parents and have a great career. This is not because it's impossible; it's because we don't have systems in place to provide that life."
What ends up happening, Chang points out, is women leave the workforce to care for their newborns and oftentimes don't come back for years or even decades (she refers to Lori Hill, a software developer who took a break from her career to raise her kids and reentered the workforce after 22 years). This contributes to what many experts refer to as a "brain drain" in the US workforce and economy. If only companies could see this larger picture, she says, maybe then they would be more open to more parent-friendly policies.
Since Lucia's birth, Chang has applied to a wide range of positions, from established companies to brand-new start-ups, and even a weeklong stint as the mayor of Danzhai Wanda Village in Southwest China. As expected, the responses have been mixed, but some companies have been surprisingly receptive. "I think it opens people's minds and makes them think backwards and forwards, reflecting back on their childhood and mother," Chang says, "as well as envisioning what kind of workplaces will exist in the future." One aspect of a mother-baby team she tries to emphasize to prospective employers is the symbiotic relationship between loving mother and industrious worker. "I feel my new skills as a mom are transferable," she says. "Why not have the next step in my career path work with, rather than against, my new role and instincts?"
Though she has not received an offer just yet, Chang remains undeterred. "I live by the philosophy 'where there is a will, there is a way,'" she says. "And I want to be with Lucia as much as possible during this critical time. I am a better person because of her and with her."
Babies at Work Are Becoming More CommonChang is not alone. For at least the last decade, a burgeoning movement advocating for bringing babies to work has been taking shape and gaining momentum. Though the practice is still very much a fledgling one, forward-thinking companies - such as advertising agency T3 and PR firm Vanguard Communications - are starting to catch on to the value of bringing babies into the workplace.
According to the Parenting in the Workplace Institute (PIWI), which provides resources and best-practice guidelines for implementing babies-at-work policies, more than 200 businesses in the US have adopted such policies. Founded in 2007 by Carla Moquin, the PIWI has helped dozens of companies implement babies-at-work programs.
"There is a disparity between what people expect when they think about having babies in a work environment compared to what well-structured baby programs actually look like in practice," Moquin explains. Once a company observes the overwhelming benefits, she says, "they are typically eager to make the policy permanent."
Moquin knows firsthand how valuable and life-changing these programs can be for new parents - and that many moms and dads don't have the financial and social privileges Chang has when it comes to forcing an employer's hand. In fact, Moquin herself had to return to work when each of her daughters were less than 5 weeks old.
So how does a babies-at-work program work exactly? With PIWI's help, a company starts by implementing a short-term pilot program, a month-long "experimentation" that determines what a long-term policy might look like. "Once a pilot program is in place and companies see how well it works," Moquin says, "it is extremely rare for a company not to move forward with a permanent policy."
PIWI also offers a downloadable template, which outlines a recommended checklist of things to consider, like eligibility parameters, waivers and agreement forms to complete, and rules for the parent to adhere to.
At Badger, a family-owned company that makes organic bodycare products, employees request to participate in the program and are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. To date, the company has been fortunate to make the program work for every employee who has requested to participate. When an employee is approved, other logistical arrangements are put into place, such as a meeting room designated to easily be converted into an office/nursery, a separate room set up specifically for mothers to breastfeed or pump, and designated voluntary, alternate caregivers within Badger for those times the parent needs a break or needs to attend a meeting.
As for Chang's ideal setup, she envisions a small space in the office not too far from her desk where her baby can play and sleep that would be private enough for nursing or pumping. But since Lucia loves being "in the mix," Chang hopes she can also keep her even closer, perhaps in her carrier under an adjustable standing desk, as she suggests. If there are important meetings where a baby's presence might not be appropriate, having an onsite sitter like the ones at Badger would be the perfect solution. And while Chang believes in the value of working closely with her work team, she also knows that a flexible work-from-home policy would be immensely helpful for any new mom.
In Moquin's experience, these programs are adopted and integrated as seamlessly as any other company policy. It typically takes a week or two of sharing the office with their baby for the parent to find their "rhythm." "This is aided by the emotional and logistical support that most coworkers are eager to provide once they find themselves bonding with the babies," she says.
The Concrete Benefits to Baby-Friendly OfficesWhile parents might be the ones overwhelmingly pushing for baby-friendly policies, data suggest that companies see tangible benefits to instituting those policies, too. According to Moquin, here are some of the ways babies at work can help businesses:
- Increasing retention
- Encouraging employees to voluntarily return to work earlier, which saves the business money
- Increasing employee morale and loyalty, not just for the parents but for their coworkers as well, making employee recruitment easier
- Increasing teamwork and collaboration due to the presence of the babies and the social dynamics they create
Several organizations with similar programs have witnessed nearly identical results. Badger has seen the benefits of babies at work firsthand and cannot envision running their business any other way. "We've seen higher morale, increased engagement, and greater loyalty among employees," says Dee Fitzgerald, Badger's Marketing & PR Manager. "Parents feel supported and come to work knowing they are embraced by a community that sees them as a whole person and cares for their well-being."
While there are inevitably going to be a few downsides, namely the occasional distraction of a crying baby, the list is minuscule compared to the benefits. "Our experience so far has been that the benefits far outweigh the concerns or inconveniences." Plus, Fitzgerald exclaims, "It's the right thing to do!"
The Nevada State Health Division, which first introduced its program in 2009, noted increased productivity, improved morale, and better communication with no formal complaints. The NSHD's program was so successful it inspired other organizations in the state, like the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services and Nevada Child and Family Services, to adopt babies-at-work policies of their own.
According to a report by Society of Human Resource Management, who interviewed Virginia architectural design firm Peck, Peck & Associates on its babies-at-work program, the increase in retention is a standout benefit. "We've had people who were offered jobs [elsewhere] but stayed with us because of this," founder Dianne Peck told SHRM.
Curious companies, if you're reading this, perhaps one particular benefit should be underlined: not only do these programs cost very little, or virtually nothing, to implement, they will actually save you money.
"If your company has an open-door policy and is invested in the well-being of its employees," Fitzgerald says, "it is a relatively easy benefit to implement with little cost and a high return." She also emphasizes that such programs are powerful recruiting tools, which saves the company money in the long run. The NSHD made a similar note in its report, calling the program a "minimal investment as long as clear expectations and rules are in place."
But families benefit too, as Moquin notes:
- Parents can be present for those critical first six months of their baby's life
- Parents and babies don't have to experience the trauma of separating in those very vulnerable early months
- Parents face lower daycare costs/more financial stability
- Breastfeeding opportunities for moms increase
Chang hopes to highlight this multitude of benefits each time she applies to a job with Lucia, who she calls "a natural Chief Happiness Officer."
Advice For Parents Who Want to Bring Their Baby to WorkAs of press time, Chang is still job searching for the right position and company that will allow her to fulfill her dual roles as mother and creative whiz. She always knew that it might be trickier to apply as a "package deal," but she remains "hopeful and curious about the outcome." In the meantime, both Moquin and Fitzgerald offer invaluable advice to new moms like Chang.
"For a new mom applying to jobs, we recommend asking the hiring manager or HR representative what kinds of family-friendly benefits they offer and if babies at work would be something they would consider providing in the future," Fitzgerald says. "If the answer is 'yes,' then you know that the company culture is family-friendly and its leadership team places a high value on the happiness and well-being of its employees."
Moquin's advice is more practical. "For new moms who already have a baby and are looking for jobs, we actually recommend that they focus on flexible or work-from-home jobs unless they have a potential employer that is already eager to implement a baby program," she advises, acknowledging that not all moms can afford the luxury of a lengthy job search for an office that fulfills all their asks. "It can take weeks to months to convince a company to implement a program."
But Chang isn't giving up on finding a full-time job in an office environment. She has a newfound tenacity bolstered by her tiny teammate. "Babies are just everything," she says. "Babies represent new hopes, new aspirations." And if that means making the case for bringing Lucia to work knowing most companies will reject the very notion, she will do it, because she genuinely believes in the value of working alongside her daughter.
"As a team," Chang wrote in one cover letter, "we can bring positive energy and change to almost any situation we encounter, and would love to bring it to you."
This Type of Flaxseed Is Better at Preventing Belly Bloat
Not a fish fan but you know you should be getting your omega-3s? Look to the amazing flaxseed in order to get your daily recommended amount of 1.1 grams. When perusing the aisles of your grocery store, you'll see they come in two forms - whole and ground. Is one more beneficial than the other? The chart below shows how they compare nutritionally.
1 tbsp. whole flaxseed | 1 tbsp. ground flaxseed | |
Calories | 55 | 37 |
Total Fat (g) | 4 | 3 |
Saturated Fat (g) | 0 | 0 |
Carbs (g) | 3 | 2 |
Fiber (g) | 3 | 2 |
Protein (g) | 2 | 1 |
Calcium (mg) | 26.1 | 17.9 |
Iron (mg) | .6 | .4 |
Omega-3s (g) | 2.3 | 1.6 |
Omega-6s (g) | .6 | .4 |
Folate (mcg) | 8.9 | 6.1 |
As you can see, they're pretty similar, but it's recommended to consume ground flaxseed because whole flaxseeds just pass right through the body undigested. Eating ground flaxseed allows your body to get the omegas as well as the phytochemicals called lignans, which may have antioxidant actions and may help protect against certain cancers. What about flaxseed oil, you ask? It also contains omegas and lignans, but it has no fiber, so go for the ground flaxseed to keep you regular and to help prevent bloating caused by constipation.
Since the RDI of omega-3s is 1.1 grams a day, just one tablespoon of ground flaxseed added to your smoothie, oatmeal, cereal, or sprinkled in your soup or on your salad is way more than enough. You can also bake with it as an egg substitute in recipes like this protein banana bread.
