10 Toxic Ingredients Pregnant Women Should Never Use in Their Beauty Routines

The average adult uses nine personal care products every day. If I think about my own beauty routine, it adds up to much more. In the shower alone I use a face wash, body wash, exfoliator, shampoo, and conditioner. Once I'm out, the lotions, face creams, sunscreen, perfume, hair products, and makeup come into play. I can't even seem to choose just one lip color, instead opting to blend a few to get the perfect shade.

It often takes the responsibility of growing another life for us to take a serious look at our personal care products.

Does that sound familiar? Unfortunately, there are potentially toxic chemicals hiding in our makeup, sunscreen, skincare products, and everything else we slather on. The risks associated with each are potentially more hazardous for pregnant women - which is why it often takes the responsibility of growing another life for us to take a serious look at our personal care products.

"We should avoid risky ingredients at all stages of our lives," said Paul Pestano, a senior database analyst for the Environmental Working Group, an organization that researches and educates consumers about toxins in personal care products. "However, pregnancy may be a period in which women should be particularly careful."

Pestano notes that the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine warn that exposure to toxic chemicals before conception and during pregnancy can have significant and long-lasting effects on reproductive health. Problems can include infertility, low birth weight, and preterm birth.

EWG suggests that pregnant women try to minimize their exposure to all ingredients that have been associated with adverse health effects, especially those known as endocrine disruptors. Endocrine disruptors can interfere with the body's normal hormone functions and potentially affect the development of the unborn child.

Luckily, there are quality brands out there making nontoxic cosmetics. As a pregnant woman myself, I find it's easier to make responsible choices if I understand the reasons behind each warning. So I decided to do some research into the cosmetic ingredients I should avoid. I spoke to Tata Harper, the founder of her own safe and natural skincare line, and Gregg Renfrew, the founder of Beautycounter, which bans more than 1,500 questionable or harmful chemicals from its products.

If you're expecting, too, here is a list of the ingredients, where you're likely to find them, and an explanation of why they are potentially harmful. And don't worry, you won't have to go cosmetics-free for nine months - I also have some recommendations for safe options you can turn to.

9 Healing Products to Try After Getting Freshly Inked

The last thing you want to do after going through the entire process of getting a tattoo is ruin it with improper care. While I've had various tattoo artists recommend different specific products, most of them agree on the same aftercare process: cleanse, heal, and moisturize. Though it's really that simple, there are also a few important things to avoid during that process. Read on for the essential products you'll need to properly care for your fresh ink, as well as different recommendations for each.

Gingerbread Latte Hair Is the Sweetest Way to Be Holiday Ready

One of the most exciting parts of the Winter season is running to Starbucks to get our hands on the holiday drinks. One of our favorites is the spicy gingerbread latte. Turns out, the festive drink also happens to be excellent hair color inspiration.

Starting with a deep coffee-hued base and adding highlights of warm copper, this brunette hair color is a gorgeous choice for the Winter season. The lighter hues are reminiscent of adding milk into your latte and seeing the different shades of brown that appear in your red holiday cup. The drink itself is delicious, so you can't blame us for getting excited about this beauty inspiration.

Gingerbread latte hair is a gorgeous look for brunette gals who want a subtle change without dipping their strands in bleach. If you're tempted to try this out for yourself (as you should be!), keep scrolling for some gorgeous inspiration photos to show your stylist.

Let Us Now Praise Meghan Markle's Natural, Curly Hair

Image Source: Getty / Chris Jackson

While we await the royal wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry in May 2018, beauty girls are left dreaming of all the ways the actress could wear her always-gorgeous hair. While Meghan's go-to is a soft, straight blowout (much like her future sister-in-law, Kate Middleton), the Daily Mail dug up some old high school yearbook photos of Meghan that are making us hope that the soon-to-be royal will wear her naturally curly hair down the aisle.

Yup, back in 1998, the (likely) future duchess was known as Rachel Markle, a 17-year-old student at LA's (all-girls!) Immaculate Heart High. While the thought of the entire world seeing your junior year class picture might make you break out in hives, our girl was predictably working it with a fresh face and voluminous natural curls. And Twitter is LIVING FOR IT.

"We got curls in the royal palace y'all!!!" Twitter user Kamie Crawford wrote. "Starting a petition to get Meghan to wear a fresh wash & go around the palace." Where do we sign?

Safe to say, we're f*cking thrilled that the royal family will soon include a woman with beautiful, natural curls. We're crossing our fingers that Meghan reps them next Spring while walking down the aisle of St. George's Chapel, even if she's pretty much always seen in public with straight hair. Perhaps it's a long shot, but hey, so is marrying a prince.

Rihanna Explains Why She Won't Use Transgender Models as a "Convenient Marketing Tool"

Much has been said about the way Fenty Beauty celebrates diversity. One fan, however, questioned Rihanna about one type of representation that seemed to be missing from the brand.

Brazil-based Twitter user @ibertootero messaged the singer to tell her, "Fenty Beauty campaign is awesome, next time you should invite a trans girl to the group." In her response, she brilliantly shed light on a major problem with the beauty industry's idea of diverse casting.

"I've had the pleasure of working with many gifted trans women throughout the years, but I don't go around doing trans castings! Just like I don't do straight non trans women castings! I respect all women, and whether they're trans or not is none of my business!" she said.

"It's personal and some trans women are more comfortable being open about it than others, so I have to respect that as a woman myself!" she continued. "I don't think it's fair that a trans woman, or man, be used as a convenient marketing tool! Too often do I see companies doing this to trans and black women alike! There's always just that one spot in the campaign for the token 'we look mad diverse' girl/guy! It's sad!"

"I don't think it's fair that a trans woman, or man, be used as a convenient marketing tool."

While neither Rihanna nor Fenty Beauty has confirmed or reposted the exchange, there's reason to believe her response was real. Rihanna has a strong relationship with her fans (better known as her "navy"), and she's been known to comment and direct-message back.

If this is true, we have even more reason to praise Rihanna. While representation in all forms of media always matters, she's right about beauty companies jumping on casting black, Muslim, male, and transgender models and making their existence a marketing tool under the guise of empowerment. Diversity isn't a trend. It's a necessity - and it should be the standard.

The fact that Rihanna refuses to participate in being self-congratulatory about casting any one type of person is a testament to her mission of creating a new normal, where people aren't reduced to tokens. Consider it reason number 10,000 we love Fenty Beauty.

Gift This Two-Sided Disney Beauty Bag to the Sleeping Beauty OR Maleficent in Your Life

Some days, when you've got your Slip mask on and have to hit the snooze button approximately 12 times before you can even fathom getting out of bed, you're a Sleeping Beauty. Other times, you're a Maleficent - please no one talk to me when it's 3 p.m., I haven't had lunch yet, the Sweetgreen line is too long, and I'm the hangry-est girl you ever did see. So that's why this two-sided Disney beauty bag speaks to our soul - no matter your mood, you can rep the right character.

One half of this Sleeping Beauty & Maleficent Cosmetic Case ($39) features a sweetly sleepy Aurora. But, flip it over and you'll see Maleficent scheming with her raven hypeman Diaval.

Along with making a great gift for your friend who's known to switch emotions at the drop of a hat, this bag also totes a fancy backstory. It's part of the Disney Collection by Danielle Nicole, a line of accessories created by the quirky-chic designer.

This faux leather (meaning: vegan!) cosmetic carrier is adorned with glitter, and the characters are sewn on via embroidery. Plus it's got a little zipper compartment on the inside, which is perfect for stray makeup wipes.

Spooky or sweet, it's time you get yourself a bag that can do both.

Holographic Opal Lipstick Is Fit For a '90s-Fabulous Snow Bunny

By now, you've definitely unicorned-out your makeup routine. In such a saturated market, it's hard to see a fresh spin on what has since become a classic modern beauty staple. That being said, your eyes will be totally glued to opal lips, a unicorn-esque, holographic trend that's sweeping Instagram (and damn near perfect for Winter).

If Mariah Carey's iconic "All I Want For Christmas Is You" album art (AKA my phone's current wallpaper) was shot in 2017, I think that Mimi might have switched out her bold red for an opal lip. Take a look at the example above, as imagined by Jazmina Daniels. The cloud-like design is part '90s, part 2017, and full fabulous.

Whether you're glamming up for a holiday party or romping through the snow just #forthegram, this cold weather-appropriate look gives off major snow bunny vibes. So this Winter, go ahead and paint your pout with a frosty reflective lipstick such as Stila Color Balm in Opal ($22) or Kevyn Aucoin The Molten Opal Lip Color Top Coat ($30), practice a frosty stare, and achieve straight-up ice princess status.

These 3 New E.L.F. Brushes Are the Most Affordable Way to Do Holiday Glitter Makeup

Glitter eye makeup is a gift from above - as long as you're willing to forgive the havoc it wreaks on your makeup brushes. While getting ready for a holiday party is super fun, nothing spoils the high note in "All I Want For Christmas Is You" more than having to stop to clean your eyeliner tool before you can use it to apply glitter shadow. So, what's a unicorn to do? E.L.F. now has three solutions - and all cost less than your lunch.

The affordable line just dropped three silicone tools that are all meant for building the different facets of an eye look. First, there's the Smudge Brush, which you can use to blend your pencil liner into a precise, thick look. If gel's more your thing, then opt for the Angled Brush, which can also be used to fill in brows. And when it comes time to top off your peepers with glitter, there's a specific brush for that, too.

Since all applicators cost $3 (which rounds out to a very nice nine bucks for the entire trio), you can spend more on the makeup you'll use for all of your seasonal soirées. Read on to see all three tools.

Gigi Hadid Flaunts Her Armpit Hair as a Boxing Badass For Love Magazine

On day 11 of Love magazine's annual Advent calendar, Gigi Hadid went where no model has ever gone before for the calendar and rocked unshaven armpits. While this year we've seen models break out their strongest moves for the fitness-themed videos, Gigi's body hair has added to the empowering narrative of the videos. While Gigi flaunted her best boxing and volleyball moves, it was her underarms that had people talking.

Some comments have commended her choice to go natural, with one Instagram user writing, "ARMPIT HAIR YASSSSSSSSSS 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏," but as expected, others felt differently, writing, "ewwwwwwww" and "I'm shook." For a video concept that is known for its unparalleled sexiness, it's great to see Gigi's natural body hair being embraced and talked about. It's obvious that there is some sweatshirt fuzz as well stuck to Gigi's underarms, but regardless, it's a different side to the perfectly edited videos of the past and an exciting step for embracing body hair like it's NBD - because it isn't!

Here's Why People Are Angry About Sia's MAC Collaboration

Sia, who's known for hiding her face with blunt wigs, isn't hiding when it comes to the MAC controversy she's currently embroiled in. On Dec. 3, MAC announced that the "Chandelier" singer is the new spokeswoman for Viva Glam, a red lipstick the brand releases every year to raise funds for AIDS research.

Previous Viva Glam collaborators have included Rihanna, Taraji P. Henson, and Ariana Grande. Fans were quick to point out that while Viva Glam contributes to an important cause, fighting AIDS, a certain business practice by MAC is, in their opinion, less laudable.

MAC, like any cosmetics company that wants to sell its products in China, must adhere to the country's strict animal testing regulations. This means that even though MAC is staunchly against animal testing stateside, it must pay for the Chinese government to perform it. This is a conundrum every major brand faces - stick to their ethical principles, or open their business up to a booming Chinese cosmetics market? Earlier this year, Nars opted for the latter, in a move that was criticized by Kat Von D.

Since Sia is a vegan, many fans criticized her decision to team up with MAC. As one person wrote in a comment to her Instagram announcement of the collaboration, "Sis you are an amazing woman but Mac????? Bad choice."

"Like M·A·C, I believe makeup shouldn't be tested on animals. M·A·C does not test on animals and is advocating change in countries like China where animal testing exists."

Another fan wrote, "I love everything this campaign stands for, but I can't stand behind it as animals were tortured to make this lipstick. Even if they were truly Cruelty-Free, they still put animal based products in their cosmetics; which means either way an animal was harmed. Be a voice for the animals and remove yourself from this as you are such a huge advocate for animals."

Others were more forgiving, with one person writing, "You can still love animals though and buy from Mac. Buying Mac makeup doesn't mean you're a bad person."

The backlash was enough to provoke a response from Sia, who took to Twitter to write, "Like M·A·C, I believe makeup shouldn't be tested on animals. M·A·C does not test on animals and is advocating change in countries like China where animal testing exists."

Sia then linked to MAC's official stance on the issue. The brand has teamed up with The Institute of In Vitro Sciences to help change global laws about cruelty-free testing. MAC helps to fund IIVS's International Outreach Program.

This dialogue is not easy to have - we want beauty enthusiasts everywhere to have access to all the best new products, but we don't want that to come at a price for cute little critters. If you would like to lend your support to a cruelty-free future, consider donating to PETA or the Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing.

12 Clever Ways to Organize Your Beauty Stash Inspired by the KonMari Method

One of the greatest luxuries in my life is space. When a surface - be it my office desk or vanity bureau at home or bathroom cabinet - lacks clutter, my head instantly feels clearer. And the funny thing about space is that while it's free and something I can control, I often don't see much of it. As a beauty editor, I am constantly getting new products to test, and while this sounds pretty awesome (and it is!), it also leads to untidiness. So I crave clean space and product-free countertops.

Before my now-fiancé moved into my apartment last Fall, he gifted me Marie Kondo's bestselling book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. And for me, it really was both life changing and magical. The essence of the KonMari method is to take out all of your items in a category and examine each one, questioning "does this bring me joy?" And only if it does, do you keep it. She then offers a ton of storage ideas, such as stacking items vertically in drawers so you can see them.

After reading it cover to cover, I took two days off to handle the big clean-out task. When I was on the other side of the emotional journey, I felt wonderful and my apartment finally felt more spacious. My beauty stash was significantly cut down, and while I have to work hard to upkeep it, I now know what to do when it's time to declutter.

If you feel like you need to try this method, keep reading to discover KonMari-inspired tricks and organizational ideas for your beauty goodies, shared by Instagram users.

Finally - There's a Version of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" That Isn't So Damn Creepy

If you've ever felt conflicted about loving the holiday classic "Baby, It's Cold Outside" due to the lyrics' controversial handling of sexual consent, boy, have we got excellent news for you. While the original tune's pushy call-and-response style has earned plenty of criticism in recent years, there's a new version that replaces any trace of the problematic aspects of the vintage song with feminist, proconsent lyrics. Lydia Liza and Josiah Lemanski rewrote the festive song to demonstrate the importance of consent in romantic relationships and women's agency, and the result is downright lovely.

Just check out a sampling of the new lyrics:

"I really can't stay (Baby, I'm fine with that)

I've got to go away (Baby, I'm cool with that)

This evening has been (Been hoping you get home safe)

So very nice (I'm glad you had a real good time)

My mother will start to worry (Call her so she knows that you're coming)

Father will be pacing the floor (Better get your car a-humming)

So really I'd better scurry (No rush)

Should I use the front or back door? (Which one are you pulling toward more?)

The neighbors might think (That you're a real nice girl)

What is this drink? (Pomegranate La Croix)"

Watch the pair perform the song above, then you can add it to your Spotify playlist! Now, when can we get a new version of "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer"? Because that's some dark stuff, man.

Democrat Doug Jones Defeats Roy Moore in a Historic Alabama Senate Race

Democrat Doug Jones has defeated Republican candidate Roy Moore in Alabama's Senate election, earning him the seat that was previously held by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. The heated race was quite the close call, with Jones garnering 49.5 percent of the votes and Moore raking in 48.8 percent, according to CNN. Jones's victory is truly historic for the deeply red state of Alabama, which hasn't elected a Democratic senator in more than two decades.

His election will surely deal quite the blow to President Trump, who adamantly endorsed Moore and pleaded for votes in his favor, despite the Republican candidate's recent onslaught of sexual misconduct allegations.

Jones celebrated his victory by simply tweeting, "Thank you ALABAMA!!" Trump's reaction to the result was surprisingly mild, as the POTUS tweeted, "Congratulations to Doug Jones on a hard fought victory. The write-in votes played a very big factor, but a win is a win. The people of Alabama are great, and the Republicans will have another shot at this seat in a very short period of time. It never ends!" No word on whether Trump or one of his assistants actually crafted that surprisingly level-headed and grammatically correct response.

Maxine Waters's Tweet About Trump and Roy Moore Is the Purest Definition of Savage

Time and time again, Rep. Maxine Waters has proved that she's sure as hell not afraid to candidly express her thoughts about controversial political figures, whether it be on social media, during television appearances, or at political events. You certainly don't want to be on the California congresswoman's bad side, and it looks like Trump has officially sealed the No. 1 spot on her sh*t list, with Roy Moore coming in a close second place.

When Moore lost the Alabama Senate race to Democrat Doug Jones on Dec. 12 - a historic and notable moment for the deeply red state - Waters couldn't resist tossing in her two cents on the election results. She immediately fired off an epic (and, yes, rather savage) tweet aimed at Trump, who adamantly pleaded for votes in Moore's favor during the Alabama Senate race.

The tweet digs at Trump's alarming Diet Coke addiction (ICYMI, the POTUS reportedly tosses back a whopping dozen cans of the sugary beverage each day) while also referencing Moore's recent onslaught of sexual assault allegations. And can we please just discuss her hysterical hashtag choice? All we have to say is LOL. This woman has truly solidified her title as the ultimate Queen of Sass.

Needless to say, people are absolutely living for her shade-throwing abilities, which some may compare to that of a freakin' full-grown oak tree.

Roy Moore's Horse Inspired the Parody Twitter Account We Never Knew We Needed

On Dec. 12, as the controversial Alabama Senate seat showdown between Doug Jones and Roy Moore finally came to a head, Moore raised eyebrows (and greatly irked horse Twitter) by choosing to ride his horse Sassy to the local polling place instead of, say, walking - or driving a car. It's not the first time the then-candidate chose horseback riding as his main mode of transportation, but it's a choice that faced heavy scrutiny after several consecutive days of questionable decisions made on behalf of the Moore camp. In the three days prior to the election, his wife attempted to rebut a "fake news" claim that she didn't "care for Jews," the candidate himself attempted to bail out of campaigning by attending the Army-Navy Game in Philadelphia, and, most egregiously, a spokesman for the campaign said that homosexuality was "probably" illegal. In other words, the world was already watching. And what it saw was a man and his horse.

Moore would eventually lose the election, perhaps due to the myriad allegations of sexual misconduct and assault that were leveled against him, or perhaps as a karmic payback for awful statements that checker his past. But what will live on in infamy from Dec. 12 onward is the parody account that appeared on Twitter - one that, for all intents and purposes, purported to deliver the thoughts of Moore's horse Sassy.

Below, we've pulled some of the best tweets the account has unleashed so far. And even though the election is over, you can bet that we'll still be following this account for weeks to come - and not just because the account lists its current location as "Under Roy Moore, Alabama" (but let's be honest: we're definitely still laughing about it).

Shark Tank Winner Julia Cheek on Female Entrepreneurship: "Build the Life and the Business You Want"

Five months after Julia Cheek filmed her appearance on Shark Tank, on Nov. 27, she finally got to watch it on TV. "I hadn't seen any of the episode," she told me by phone a couple of days later. "I've been really surprised by the positive reaction to the company and to the idea." As founder and CEO of diagnostic testing start-up EverlyWell, Cheek has poured her heart and soul into her business. Now that the episode has aired, she can finally share with the world that her hard work has paid off: EverlyWell now counts Shark Tank panelist Lori Greiner among its investors.

EverlyWell is poised to completely change the healthcare industry as we know it, and judging by the $1 million line of credit Greiner pledged on air in exchange for a five percent stake, corporate America is now keenly aware of it, too. But from where the company's founder stands, the most important thing is making the lives of Americans better in the one way she's found she can: by making it just a little bit easier to understand your health. A transcript of the conversation I had with Cheek on Nov. 30 about EverlyWell, the Shark Tank experience, and her role as a female founder is printed below with light edits, condensed for clarity.

EverlyWell At-home Health Tests from EverlyWell on Vimeo.

POPSUGAR: What was your "eureka!" moment, the one that made you decide to start EverlyWell?

Julia Cheek: I had just turned 30 - maybe 31 - and was working around the clock. I had a great corporate job, but then I started not feeling well. I was getting really tired, I had random aches and pains, I felt like I had some sort of chronic fatigue - but I couldn't pinpoint it. I'd tried a bunch of stuff first before going to the doctor, but then I spent six months in early 2015 going to different types of specialists, all of whom ran all different types of tests. I never got the results and nothing about the tests were on paper; I would never even get a phone call explaining the results to me. I just got an email saying everything was normal. I wasn't even diagnosed! But because I was on a high deductible plan, months later I ended up getting these bills from the labs for hundreds and hundreds of dollars – totaling up to over $2,000 in out of pocket in costs.

I wound up at an acupuncturist - a functional medicine provider - and found out I had a severe vitamin D deficiency, a magnesium deficiency, a B12 deficiency, and that all of my cortisol levels - which regulate your stress and sleep - were completely off. In the end , it was actually a very manageable issue - I just didn't have a proper way to manage the medical system. So I started researching it, and I thought, "This makes no sense; you don't have to invent a new type of lab test. You just have to use technology to make accessing testing easier for consumers in a way that's still accurate and regulatory compliant."

So I left my job in July of 2015 and immediately started the company. Everyone's always like, "Wow, that sounds pretty radical!" But I've known since business school that I wanted to start a company and had never come across that idea that I felt like I could commit my life to, that I was passionate about and felt like it was the right time to hit the market with. So I needed that intersection, and once I had it, I was like, "I have to do this. I will regret it for the rest of my life if I don't try to do this." There's this whole concept of founding a company and having it sell for a billion dollars, and that of course has happened, but I think the reality is that these things take years. It takes day after day of getting to the next step. So if you're not totally passionate and feel like you're changing the world with what you're doing, it's not going to be worth it.

PS: How did you end up pitching the panel on Shark Tank?

JC: I'm a big Shark Tank fan and I've watched for a number of years. One of our investors, Halle Tecco (the founder of Rock Health, a significant angel investment fund) is actually the person who tracks and publishes the Shark Tank deal database. So she had approached me, along with another board member, and said, "Hey, we really think you should think about doing this - we have a consumer product, and people don't even know that this option exists for lab testing. And, by the way, it'd be great to have a Shark on board." So I ended up applying. You submit a 20-page application - this happened in March - and I was contacted by a producer about two days before the application date. I'd already been thinking about doing it, but they reached out and said, "Hey, we would encourage to apply" - so I did. It took about 15 to 20 hours just to complete the application, and then from there you do a video pitch application and then a phone interview and a number of filmed pitches and you work with your production team all the way until you get to filming. And then you do a dress rehearsal when you arrive on set - not with the Sharks, but you know, a pitch on set once you're there. And that was in June.

I don't know the exact statistic, but the show receives well over 100,000 applicants per season. So to even get the chance to film . . . you know, you go through the process and it takes so much time, but you can't rely on anything because it's such a low probability that you make it filming, and it's an even lower probability that you make it from there to airing. But we were really committed; we felt like the audience for Shark Tank is where we wanted to tell our story and to have the opportunity to pitch to these incredible people. I was targeting Lori and Mark, but getting a Shark involved in a consumer product in a really challenging space like health care . . . I just felt like that was a huge opportunity.

PS: So you were targeting Lori!

JC: I was! I was targeting Lori and Mark. The guest Shark that I didn't know would be on the show until right before, Rohan Oza . . . his background is obviously in consumer brands, and he's part of a venture firm actually based out of Austin. So once I found that out, I was like, 'Oh, well, maybe Rohan would be great as well." But from the typical Shark pool, I was really excited to try to convince Mark and Lori. So that's one of the reasons on the show you see me accept so quickly - because, well, first of all, she was the only Shark in. But I felt like her brand, how she understands consumer products, how she understands retail and marketing and packaging and messaging - I just felt like we'd be crazy not to get her on board. She's so authentic and in touch with her consumer base - and with the American consumer! It's a really great relationship to have, to get to work with her. She's been amazing so far - she called in to the watch party that we had on Sunday night, which was so fun, and she's obviously had a couple great Facebook videos and some other things that have been super helpful.

PS: I'd love to hear a bit more about the STD testing kits you mentioned in the episode and how those work.

JC: We currently have two STD panels - it's a seven-test comprehensive panel - one male, one female. What's really great about that product is that it's $189, but that includes, at no extra cost, a telemedicine physician consult and a prescription if your test comes back abnormal and if relevant for your particular infection. That's a big cost saving for many people, and it's totally private and anonymous. We launched that product in February and it's quickly grown to be one of our top three bestsellers. For us, our goal across the board is to to get the prices down on our tests, to pass that along to the consumer - but it's also to provide products that can actually change the outcome of health. So whether that's reducing STD rates, improving heart health . . . things like that, that's where I get really passionate.

From a demographic standpoint, the test is heavily male - and obviously a little on the younger age demographic. But think about it; for college kids, it may be that you can go to a clinic, but many people don't go, as it's something that they want to keep private. They want to have access to their own information on their own terms, and the more that we can encourage this, the better. Next year, we'll be launching individual STD markers, so if you only wanted an HIV test, for example, you'd be able to get that. But the product is a great example of how can we bring things direct to consumer, physician reviewed and approved, at a reasonable price point - and the consumer gets to control the decision-making around how they want to use and access the test.

PS: You also mentioned a new offering in the genomics space - what's the current status on that?

JC: In July of this year, we launched a DNA partnership with Helix. Helix is an incredible company backed by Warburg Pincus that essentially allows you to get your DNA sequenced once at a really reasonable price, and then query that data through different partners that Helix has on its platform. We've actually developed our own genomic panels that are thematically combined with our biomarkers tests based on that data. We have three right now: a food sensitivity plus, a metabolism plus, and a breast milk DHA test. What's so huge about this is that when you get a panel done, that's just data from a point in time. It's infinitely more helpful to have both the point-in-time data as well as your underlying genetic predisposition. Because if you just have the genetic data, it's important information to help inform your lifestyle - but if you have the genetic data AND you know exactly what your current labs are, you can then actually start to put together a really good plan for how you're going to manage your health.

PS: So what's next for EverlyWell, now that you've got Lori on board?

JC: We ended up closing the deal with Lori on slightly different terms and actually just signed our series A term sheet, which will close by the end of the year - we're really excited about that. On the show, you heard me say we had done about $2.5 million in sales in about a year - and now we will do, just in 2017, about $6 to $7 million in sales. So the numbers are quite different! We're closing out today, but we're actually 99.9 percent sure that we're going to end this month as a million-dollar month for November, which is really exciting. But the main next step is to get to two-and-a-half times growth next year through a multichannel strategy. Ninety-nine percent of our sales are done through EverlyWell.com, and we really want to get these kits on shelves where people live and work, accessible through their physicians, accessible through their employers, and that sort of thing. We also want to really expand our test menu, so wherever people are, in whatever phase of their life, we've got them covered. If they're considering having a child, how do we ensure that they can have all kinds of testing options, pre- and postpartum? If they're pre- or postmenopausal, how can we make products that can help manage their hormones? These are some of the strategic developments we're looking at in the next year. We're also looking at how can we really improve the technology platform. We have beautiful custom results, but we want to help integrate those results so that they'll automatically be sent to an individual's doctor.

PS: And what about integrating EverlyWell into existing health plans and coverage?

JC: We're actively working on enterprise partnerships with healthcare plans, self-insured employers, clinical trial companies, and corporate wellness groups. And the reason for that is that there's an extremely low rate of lab testing compliance. It's a little bit hard to gauge nationally, but anywhere between 30 to 40 percent of lab tests that are ordered by doctors are never fulfilled. So there's this huge opportunity to empower individuals for three reasons. It's super inconvenient, people don't know how much it's going to cost, and then once you do it, you have no idea whether it mattered or not. We saw these problems, and so did others - and that means that a lot of big companies are now approaching us and saying, "Hey, can you help manage this with our consumers and get them excited about this and engaged? And we'll pay you to do that." So we absolutely are focused on the consumer access and adoption of certain consumer behavior around that testing, but you'll start to see us work with companies that can really broaden our scale and allow us to do that in a really big way.

PS: Finally, who's your biggest entrepreneurial role model, and what would you recommend to other women looking to get into business?

JC: I'm going to go ahead and say Kat Lake, the founder and CEO of Stitch Fix. She's a friend of mine from business school. I just think the way that she has managed the building of Stitch Fix is truly remarkable. She built her business smartly, it was quick, she never gave up - and I know her personally, so it's a little weird to say she's my role model - but she's been someone that I would love to model our path after in what she's been able to do.

Being a female founder is particularly challenging, and there's been more and more narratives being drawn around female founders and entrepreneurs. It's so important that we're bringing all these narratives to light, but if I'm reading it and I'm not a founder, I'd be like . . . "Why would I ever do this?" But it can be amazing, and I want to encourage people to do it. I would love for women to know it can be amazing and rewarding and it can be the best career path in the world - and not to get discouraged by what you read, to really encourage people to build the life and the business you want.

These Are the Songs That Alexa Was Asked to Play Most in 2017 - by Their Unforgettable Lyrics

Amazon's Alexa is a digital assistant of many talents. Alexa can turn on your lights, tell you the news, rope you into a rousing bout of Jeopardy!, or play any song you've ever listened to in your digital library - all with a simple sentence and in just a matter of seconds. But as we found out this Fall, one of the best features of the Echo version of Alexa is that her remit isn't limited to playing a tune by its proper title. Regardless of how much you butcher the title, so long as you belt out one accurate lyric with which to track it down, Alexa can scan the massive Amazon Music library and instantly start playing the exact song you're looking for.

Behold, the Most Hated Comment in Reddit History

I will always be the first to admit that a lot of what I consume on the internet is a direct result of what I see being upvoted on Reddit. If you're not familiar with the phrase, upvoting is the equivalent of "liking" something on Facebook or "faving" something on Twitter - with the ultimate goal being not just the crowd's approval, but to land your post at the top of the Reddit charts and onto the so-called front page of the internet. That being said, despite making several trips to Reddit.com every hour of every day for the last several years, I rarely come across a post that gained attention not because of the number of upvotes that it garnered, but because so many people gave it a negative rating (or, more colloquially, downvoted it).

But that all changed on Nov. 12, when Electronic Arts (EA) decided to respond to some user criticism of the forthcoming Star Wars Battlefront II.

The title of Reddit user MBMMaverick's post is "Seriously? I paid 80$ to have Vader locked?" and reflects a sincere sense of dissatisfaction with the price paid for the forthcoming game. "This is a joke. I'll be contacting EA support for a refund . . . " the user writes, adding, "I can't even playing f*cking Darth Vader?!?!? Disgusting. This age of 'micro-transactions' has gone WAY too far. Leave it to EA though to stretch the boundaries." A little strong, perhaps - but certainly not anything too controversial. If I had a quarter for every time someone said a video game was overpriced . . . well, you get the idea. Anyway, the response from EA was swift and straight to the point:

Unfortunately for the gaming giant, Reddit is never the right forum for customer service jargon. As such, the post has racked up an absolutely staggering 443,000 downvotes in the span of a single day, with thousands more voting it down with each passing hour. For context, it's worth noting that the previous record holder for most downvoted comment on Reddit clocked in at a mere 24,333 downvotes - and it happened to be a comment that was explicitly asking Reddit users to click the downvote button. Literally.

Suffice it to say, EA is now unquestionably the company behind the most hated post in Reddit history, and we're willing to bet that it wasn't the record that it hoped it'd be breaking with the release of the first Star Wars game in years. The moral of this story? If you don't have anything nice to say, you probably shouldn't say anything at all - and you definitely shouldn't say it in a Reddit forum.

This Raunchy Video Proves How Ridiculous the Starbucks "Gay Cup" Controversy Is

Ah, the holidays. What gets everyone in a festive mood better than complaining about the limited-time red cups at Starbucks? This year, many voiced strong, negative feelings about the purported lesbians who are holding hands at the top of the cup. While a spokeswoman for the company told The New York Times that the figures are not gender-specific, the rage fire continued to burn. Luckily for all of us, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert offered a brilliant solution: just emblazon the cups with straight-up heterosexual pornography instead! Watch the preliminary commercial for Colbert's satirical campaign above, then pray you end up on Santa's naughty list. (Sorry, too far?)

It's for this very reason that we've gone through all of the hottest consoles, accessories, and games of the year to make your decision just that teensy bit easier. Ahead, you'll find 18 of the must-have gamer gadgets that made waves in 2017, all of which are sure to please.

Tenor's 5 Most Popular GIFs of 2017

2017 has been one hell of an emotional year. Thankfully, the 12-month-long rollercoaster ride of feelings we've been on has been accompanied by an overabundance of perfect GIFs - it's due to those brilliant, one-of-a-kind images that arrive at just the right time that many of us, tired of talking and typing out our thoughts, are able to express just the right sentiment to our family and friends.

Now, as the year is finally drawing to a close, the folks over at Tenor - the top GIF keyboard across iOS and Android, as well as many of our most used social media apps - have pulled together the top GIFs that were shared from the platform in 2017. This year, the GIFs we shared were a whole lot more negative than the ones we shared in 2016. And it's with that data that Tenor was able to come up with the official mood ring of 2017 (and compare it to the mood ring of 2016), as seen here:

"Because Tenor is used to communicate tone and emotion in messaging conversations hundreds of millions of times per day, GIF searches on Tenor indicate how people around the world are feeling," Tenor cofounder and CEO David McIntosh told POPSUGAR exclusively. "Not only did Tenor search data show we were feeling worse this year compared to 2016, but that GIFs on Tenor are used to express the full range of human emotions."

Ahead, you'll find the top five GIFs of the year, as compiled by the Tenor team. And be sure to scroll all the way through to the end, as it wouldn't be an official year in review if we neglected to show just how much things have changed in a mere 12 months.

Get Ready to Binge, Because Amazon Prime Is Now Available on Your Apple TV

The moment we've been waiting on for years is finally here: as of Dec. 6, Amazon Prime is finally available on our Apple TVs. Gone are the days of using the mirror function of your iPhone to stream Amazon's infinite catalog of movies and TV shows to your Apple TV, and here to stay is unlimited access to commercial-free binge-watching from Amazon's very own dedicated app on your home screen. Oh, and let's not forget that the addition of Amazon to the Apple TV catalog means that you can now use Siri to easily search through the massive library of Prime content and find exactly what it is you want to watch.

"Prime members can now access thousands of titles through the Prime Video app on Apple TV 4K and previous generations of Apple TV, including Prime Original Series and Movies such as The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and The Big Sick, with additional titles coming to the service every month," Apple's official announcement reads. And we couldn't be more grateful for the timing; the news comes amid an ongoing battle between Amazon and Google that has left many of our other devices only playing YouTube or Prime, and now we can officially watch all the goodness of all the major content providers with one easy-to-use device.

As an added bonus, the Dec. 6 Apple TV update also comes with the ability to stream live sports via the TV app on your Apple devices. And if you'd rather just watch the good stuff, you can set up your notifications to tell you to tune in right as the action is happening - that's right, you can now keep watching the next episode of The Tick and not worry about missing the play of the year. Ain't technology grand?

Yes, You Can Travel to the North Pole - Here’s How!

Dreaming of the ultimate arctic adventure? Look no further than the great North Pole. Contrary to popular belief, this mythical region is more than just the headquarters for the jolly bearded man in the red-and-white suit; it's a mysterious, ever-changing destination that is possible to explore, and one that will deliver the utmost once-in-a-lifetime experience. Sound enticing? We think so, too.

But before you start packing your bags, there are a few things to note. For starters, getting to the very top of the world won't be easy . . . or cheap. The journey will be long, and "cold" doesn't even begin to describe the teeth-chattering weather you'll face. Yet, drawbacks aside, this will be one voyage you'll never forget.

So for those who are feeling extra adventurous and are ready to experience the thrill of polar travel, here's everything you need to know for planning your own trip!

First off, where exactly is the North Pole?

The North Pole is the northernmost point on earth, making it the one spot in the world where the only direction is south. Although this area lies diametrically opposite of the South Pole, unlike its southern counterpart, it is not located on a land mass, but rather covered by a sheet of shifting ice in the middle of the Arctic Ocean. The only reason this region is possible to visit is because the majority of it is frozen.

When is the best time of year to visit?

Just like any other place on earth, the North Pole does have seasons, and the best time to visit is between February and May. This way, you avoid the lack of daylight (read: 24 hours of constant darkness) that takes place during Winter and the risk of dangerous stretches of thin ice that can occur in the summertime.

Rest assured, though, that most North Pole expeditions are conducted during the Spring, when there are very long hours of daylight, if not 24 hours of light.

How cold does it really get?

To put it simply: really cold. During the Winter, the average temperature is minus 40°F. And while there are warmer days in the Summer - July being the warmest month - it is still technically freezing at 32°F. But if it gives you some peace of mind, the South Pole is even colder than the North.

What activities can you partake in while exploring?

Despite the fact that the North Pole is one of the most remote places on the planet, there is actually quite a lot to do here. From helicopter rides and wildlife spotting to warming up in hot springs and running in the "coolest marathon in the world," you certainly won't encounter any boredom.

So, how do you even get there?

Although the North Pole is not exactly a budget-friendly destination, there are several ways you can embark on this arctic adventure. Of course, the easiest way will be joining an already-planned expedition. For instance, Quark Expeditions offers a vast array of cruising options. Whether it be an 11-day cruise on the Spitsbergen Explorer or a short, three-day trip via the Barneo Ice Camp Express, the choice is yours.

Another notable alternative is climbing aboard the icebreaker ship known as 50 Years of Victory through Polar Cruises. In fact, it is even possible to sign up for a polar race - you know, if you're yearning to try something really adventurous. Although, if you go this route, you might want to start training now!

Prepare For Disney's Holiday Popcorn Bucket to Cause Hour-Long Lines

Well, it looks like Disney's sold-out Oogie Boogie Halloween popcorn bucket really was a "nightmare before Christmas," because the newest specialty bucket to cause hour-long lines at the parks is all about the holidays. The Winter popcorn holder started causing hullabaloo on social media its very first day available in the parks, with fans jumping at the chance to buy several at once. Shaped like Pluto the dog, who is sporting both a sly expression and an ugly Christmas sweater, the bucket is available at Walt Disney World parks for just under $14 - and will hopefully be hitting popcorn stands in Disneyland soon.

Considering the absolute mayhem over the Oogie Boogie buckets, it's reasonable to expect even lengthier lines and sold-out signs as more Disney fans learn about this new seasonal popcorn carrier. Pluto is always adorable, but his festive sweater is extra sweet! Check out photos of the sought-after collectible accessory and understandably excited reactions from park-goers, then start planning your trip to pick up a Pluto bucket before they're gone.

You've Been Applying Your Skin Care and Makeup in the Wrong Order

It seems like there's a new beauty invention to add to our routine every week (micellar water, lip primer, what?). And with all those bottles and tubes lining the vanity, we get a little confused about which product goes when. The sequence in which you should apply your skin care and makeup in the morning (or evening) is very important. The right layering technique will ensure you get the maximum efficacy of each product, but it's mostly intuitive. For example, sunscreen should go on after moisturizer for the best protection, and apply eye shadow ahead of foundation so any fallout won't smudge on your face. But when you start inserting facial oils and contouring powders into the mix, it's enough to make a woman's head spin! Don't worry; we're here to save you from these easy-to-make beauty mistakes. Keep reading to get everything in order from skin care to cosmetics for your most flawless face.
