It's Been 5 Years Since the Sandy Hook Shooting, and Not Enough Has Changed
On Dec. 14, 2012, 20 first-graders and six educators lost their lives in a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. At the time, the shooting was the second deadliest to have occurred in America, behind the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting - and marked what seemed like a massive shift in the conversation about gun control. The loss of so many children at the hands of a shooter was so devastating that it brought then-President Barack Obama to tears, saying in a press conference, "I know there's not a parent in America who doesn't feel the same overwhelming grief that I do."
Immediately following what transpired at Sandy Hook, there was an urgency to fix the problem of gun control in America. A user-generated gun-control petition directed at the White House became the most popular, most supported measure. Obama presented a gun-control proposal to Congress to help solve the issue. And the NRA suggested putting armed police officers in every school.
Five years later, though, the issue of gun control remains largely the same, changed only in theory; Obama's gun-control measures were predominately blocked by Congress, and the NRA assures us that legislating guns won't stop mass shootings. The reality of post-Sandy Hook America is that not much has changed. In some ways, things have gotten more extreme, since a major shooting happens every two months and nearly 1,600 mass shootings have occurred since Dec. 14, 2012. The feeling of "never again," rightly put forth after the death of nearly two dozen elementary school children, seems to have only extended so far.
Yet, some changes have been made. They're mostly at the state level, since 49 percent of Americans now live in a state where expanded background checks for guns exist. Moreover, recent shootings in 2017 have motivated national efforts for background checks to be made. But, while this slow momentum toward change occurs, Congress has simultaneously worked on making the concealed carrying of guns easier. There is a deep feeling of two steps forward, one step back as it relates to fixing the problem of guns in America.
As the loss of lives from Sandy Hook weighs heavy on us today, the anniversary is a reminder that the problem is still at large. Sweeping reform may not ever come as easily as some may hope, and "thoughts and prayers" still dominate conversations. Regardless, the memory of these events looms large - and we'll continue to push toward change, however slow that change might be.
Obama's Photographer Says Sandy Hook Was the "Worst Day of His Presidency"

On the day of the unimaginable and tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School - Dec. 14, 2012 - Barack Obama addressed the nation in a famously vulnerable press conference. "Each time I learn the news, I react not as a president, but as anybody else would: as a parent," Obama said through tears. "Our hearts are broken today." Five years later, the former president's photographer describes that day as the worst of his presidency.
"It was difficult for him to maintain his emotions as he talked about this," Pete Souza said of the press conference in a new interview with Business Insider, adding, "I think that was probably when he cried for the first time."

- Business Insider (@businessinsider) December 14, 2017
The photographer also described the moment Obama received the horrifying news, which Souza captured on camera. "His Homeland Security Adviser John Brennan came up to the Oval Office," he said. "He had gathered all the facts, had talked to the FBI, and told the president that indeed 26 people had been shot, including 20 first grade kids." Souza's photograph of that exact moment is shown below.
Souza continued, "In the picture, you see just kind of the energy just zap out of the president," adding, "The horror of sending your 6-year-old kid off to school, you put him on the school bus, and you never again see them again because some crazy guy shot them to death point-blank at their school. I think he was very emotional and just thinking about this as a fellow parent, almost more so than as a president."

Net Neutrality Was Just Repealed - Here's What That Means For You
Net neutrality - or the right to a free, open internet - took a massive hit on Dec. 14 when federal regulators voted to repeal the Obama-era rules that prohibited telecommunications companies from commodifying the web into "fast" and "slow" lanes and from blocking access to certain websites and applications. With a 3-2 majority among the voting commissioners, Republicans took home a victory for the Trump administration's war on regulation. But just because it's on the Trump agenda doesn't mean that it's an issue that the GOP felt strongly about repealing. Instead, the vast majority of Americans - including four out of every five Republicans - were very much against this sort of repeal on the basis that it does far, far more harm than good. Ultimately, the driving motivation for those tasked with the decision was not making the internet better for consumers but increasing revenue for companies like Comcast and Verizon.
But what does this decision mean for us, as people who use the internet?
Firstly, it's important to note that we likely won't start feeling the brunt of the repeal in the next few weeks, or even months - at the end of the day, we're still talking about bureaucracy, and a decision of this magnitude doesn't appear on paper overnight. But once the decision has been fully entered into the federal register, internet service providers will then be able to carve out restrictions around the way we access, consume, and use the internet. At that point, companies will be able to take anticompetitive actions (slower speeds, fees for access) against platforms like Netflix and Hulu in order to drive consumers back to having monthly cable services and bundles, and, even more frighteningly, they'll be able to dictate the speed at which we can access certain parts of the web without having to explain themselves for it. That means that in a worst-case scenario, socially driven movements could have their online presence silenced (or, at the very least, slowed down) if their interests do not align with those of the cable providers, and there would be no repercussions for it.
Not all is lost just yet, though. We're now facing down what's sure to be a messy, widespread battle being fought not only in courtrooms across the country but on the floor of Congress as well. Ultimately, this means that now more than ever, it's crucial that we draw as much attention to this issue as possible - through calling representatives, staging protests, and taking action through the myriad organizations that will soon spring up to fight this - because the only way to ensure that this does not get pulled off as is is to make sure that it does not leave the news. There are a number of different lawsuits that are expected to be filed, and Congress has already started receiving bills to backtrack the action. But unless constant pressure is being put on those decision makers who have the power to change net neutrality's fate, it could be pushed aside for other pressing issues or used as an inappropriate bargaining chip in an already-gridlocked Congress.
For now, make your voice heard - and don't accept the fate of a blocked, gridlocked internet. We've come way too far to let this be decided by three individuals in a hearing, and as things develop, we will be sure to provide you with any and all actions you can take to ensure that we're able to keep the internet that we all deserve.

Forget Trump, Let's Just Look at Pictures of 3 Former Presidents Watching Golf Together Forever
Former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton came together for the Presidents Cup at Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey, and spoiler alert, THERE ARE PHOTOS.
In what can only be described as a welcome respite from the normal news cycle of increasingly frantic crazy, on Sept. 28, our three most recent presidents got together to watch some golf. To be clear, they weren't playing golf - like a certain other president we know - but Clinton, Obama, and Bush were all present for the opening round of the four-day event, which features the best male golfers from the US facing off against the most lauded international figures in the sport.
Regardless of how you feel about each of our last three presidents, it's hard not to look back fondly at the times that once were - so ahead, bask in the glory of the most nostalgic set of photos you'll see all day. And be sure to read through to the end for a bonus shot of one Barack Obama and a very well-known fan.
The Twitter Response to the FCC's Vote to Repeal Net Neutrality Is Anything but Neutral
For some Americans, the reaction to the FCC's Dec. 14 vote to repeal net neutrality was asking "what's next?" - but for others, the natural response was to crack jokes. So amid much of the chaos, frustration, and confusion about what the repeal vote actually means for us all, there were a few bright spots to laugh about despite the discouraging vote news. And since we likely won't feel the effects of the repeal for quite a while, there will be plenty more opportunity for Twitter users to roast the FCC over the next few months - so strap in, because it's sure to be a wild ride.
Read some of the best reactions to the vote, then make your voice heard to oppose the FCC's decision and put up a fight for net neutrality.
Never Want to Watch a Movie Starring an Accused Sexual Predator Again? This Site Can Help
Every day, it seems like the list of creeps in Hollywood gets longer as new allegations of sexual misconduct surface. It can be overwhelming to try to keep track of all the actors, producers, directors, studio execs, and screenwriters who have been accused. If you're like me, you want to avoid watching and supporting projects these individuals play - or played - a role in creating. Luckily, a new searchable database called Rotten Apples - a play on the popular movie rating site Rotten Tomatoes - has sprung up. According to the site's "about" section, its goal is making "ethical media consumption easier" by helping viewers identify whether a movie or TV show has connections to someone accused of sexual assault or harassment.
Simply type the title of a project into the search bar and the site will certify the movie or TV show as either "fresh" or "rotten." Take Shakespeare in Love, for example. After searching for the film, the website deemed it "rotten" and gave me the names of those involved who have been accused of harassment or assault - producers Bob and Harvey Weinstein and actors Geoffery Rush and Ben Affleck - as well as links to specific, credible sources to back up these claims. You can even find a certain US president's name if you look up Home Alone 2.
The database creators acknowledge that it isn't perfect and the page encourages users to reach out if they notice an error or a missing name. Given the scale of the project, it's no surprise that they might miss a few names along the way. In addition to using Rotten Apples, I'll still be doing my own research, but it's a helpful step in the right direction.
For now, it's unclear who's behind the new tool. We've reached out to Rotten Apples via the email address listed on the website and will update this story if we hear back.

Gabrielle Union Recalls the "Bullsh*t" Time Her Twists Were Called "Unprofessional"
Whether she's rocking braids, twists, a ponytail, blond highlights, long extensions, or her gorgeous natural hair, Gabrielle Union is constantly inspiring women with her array of looks. But, even as a successful actress and businesswoman (she created her own haircare line, Flawless), Gabrielle has faced scrutiny over her hairstyles being accepted as "professional." In a recent interview with Byrdie, she opened up about her experience as a woman of color in entertainment and society's beauty standards.
"There's a larger conversation with people of color when it comes to our hair and our skin color," Gabrielle said. "People will try to lighten our skin tones and alter our hair, which says a lot of about how we feel about ourselves versus how other people feel about our blackness and textured hair. We need to showcase the fullness of our beauty."
In a role where she was playing a "professional woman," Gabrielle wanted to wear twists, and producers dismissed her saying the style wasn't "professional" or "polished," but Gabrielle wasn't letting this one go.
"I was doing a project and with the character the producers were coming up with what they wanted to do for her hair," she recalled. "And they were like, 'She's beautiful, sophisticated, and professional.' I was like, 'Well, I want to wear braids.' And and they were like, 'Well, I mean, she's beautiful, sophisticated, and corporate America.' I responded, 'Yes, and specifically I want twists.' And they went on to say, 'We just really want her to look more polished.' I said, 'You all really don't understand what are we talking about here?'"
She continued, "The idea that how you wear your hair somehow relates to your character, your intelligence, or your wokeness is bullsh*t."
In an essay she wrote for Glamour earlier this year, Gabrielle got real about her struggle to embrace her natural hair at an early age. After 20 years of her hair "being used and abused," she knows what makes her happy. "I've finally gotten to a place of self-acceptance and recognizing that my natural hair is beautiful - and so is whatever weave I may wear," she wrote. "I'm perfectly happy rocking an Afro puff, my French braids, Senegalese twists, a faux-hawk, or an ombré wig, or heat-styling my natural hair with extensions . . . and that makes me a happy person in my life."

Ree Drummond's Christmas Cookies Are Almost Too Cute to Eat
The Pioneer Woman, Ree Drummond, is best known for her cheery personality and comforting recipes made on her ranch in Oklahoma. Her favorite holiday sugar cookies take on a fun new twist with dyed egg-wash paint in place of traditional icing. Lemon zest is added to the cookie dough for a light hint of citrus and the egg-wash paint makes these cookies much less sweet than traditional frosted sugar cookies.
In her step-by-step blog post, Ree doubles her recipe, so be mindful of the portions if you're not looking to make enough cookies for a small army. The egg-wash paint goes a long way, which makes it easy to have a variety colors for your cookie designs. The color of the glaze comes out a lot more vibrant once it's baked and the piped powdered-sugar icing adds a bit of added sweetness to each bite. Make these cookies with the whole family and add some color to your holiday spread. Just be sure to make extra because they're as addictive as they are cute.

So engage your hyperdrive and get to the parks before they sell out; we wonder how many people will bring their popcorn buckets to the movies for the premiere of Star Wars: The Last Jedi!

5 Ways to Quickly Chill Wine
Need a glass of vino, stat, but don't have the time or patience to wait for a bottle of Chardonnay to chill in your fridge? Luckily, you don't have to! Here are five ways to chill a bottle of wine in 20 minutes or less.
- Just add salt: You probably already know that putting wine in a bucket of ice and cold water, rather than just ice, will chill your vino faster. But did you know that adding salt to the mix further speeds up the cooling time? Salt reduces the freezing point of water and allows it to become colder without turning into ice, which in turn chills your wine more quickly.
- Give it a spin: If even the water/ice/salt method isn't chilling your Sauv Blanc fast enough, keep the bucket nearby and gently spin the wine bottle in the ice water every couple minutes. Spinning the bottle moves around the contents inside, allowing more wine to come into contact with the cold glass, and chilling it faster. Keep in mind that this method works best for nonsparkling wines; try this with a bottle of Champagne and you're in for a shock when you pop open the bottle!
- Wet it down: Putting wine in the freezer will chill it relatively quickly, but to speed up the process, wet a clean dish towel and wrap it around the wine bottle before you pop it in. The dampness conducts and holds in cold better, and having the icy cold towel pressed against the bottle ensures that the entire surface of the bottle is being chilled.
- Drop it in: To chill individual servings of wine, give these clever wine glasses ($23 for two) a whirl. Keep them in the fridge so that a chilled drink is no more than a few minutes away.
- Decant and chill: Smaller amounts of liquid chill faster, so if you're in a jam, pour your wine into individual glasses first, then place those in the fridge or freezer. Just make sure to keep them on a level surface so you don't end up with a chilled mess on your hands!
Update! Oreo FINALLY Announced the Mystery Flavor, and the Answer Is . . .
Update: Oreo has revealed the mystery flavor! The official Mystery Oreo flavor is . . . Fruity Pebbles! After months of letting fans guess, Oreo has spoken. In a statement, the company said, "The cookie features creme inspired by the intense fruity flavor of Fruity Pebbles cereal, sandwiched between two chocolate biscuits." You can still find the "mystery" flavor in its unusual packaging in stores, and now you won't have to do any investigating as you snack. Childhood cereal-lovers, rejoice!
Original story: Oreo is never shy about announcing its wild and unexpected flavors like Hot and Spicy and Peanut Butter and Jelly, but this time around, it's keeping things under wraps. The new Mystery Oreos were announced in August and have finally arrived on shelves, and Oreo wants you to guess the flavor for a chance to win $50,000. Whether you're in it for the money or not, it's still fun to try a mystery-flavored cookie and let your taste buds do the thinking for you!
Being the extreme Oreo enthusiasts that we are at POPSUGAR, we tried the mysterious Oreos and put our thinking caps on tight. There truly are no hints about what the flavor could be, thanks to the bare-bones white packaging and the steadfast silence from Oreo reps - they're serious about not leaking the flavor. So what was our first reaction upon taking a bite? Fruity . . . definitely fruity. And then the vague fruity flavor became more familiar as we kept chewing, until something concrete came to mind: cereal! We're betting on Fruity Pebbles or Froot Loops. We sense a somewhat-artificial but still-tasty creme filling that's strikingly similar to the flavor of Fruity Crisp Oreos, which were released last year. It would be a total bummer if Oreo simply rereleased the same flavor in disguise, so we have our fingers crossed for Fruity Pebbles or Froot Loops!
As it turns out, people on the internet agree and are getting the same fruity-cereal vibes.
The mystery flavor of Oreos is totally fruity pebbles
- Duff (@breastinyy) October 14, 2017
yo them new mystery oreos are sooo good 🤤
- nena (@zion_imani) October 16, 2017
verdict: the mystery oreos taste like fruit loops and they are NOT GOOD
- madi alexander (@MadiLAlexander) October 16, 2017
We'll have to wait to see what the official flavor title is and who the lucky winner of $50,000 will be. Oreo contest submissions are open until Nov. 30.

Exclusive! Chips Ahoy and Nutter Butter Cereals Are Hitting Shelves Soon!
It's becoming more and more acceptable to eat cookies for breakfast, and now we can add Chips Ahoy! and Nutter Butter to the list of "desserts turned cereals." Post, the same brand that blessed the world with the creation and return of Oreo O's, is debuting Chips Ahoy! Cereal and Nutter Butter Cereal, and - yes - each is as nostalgia-inducing and delicious as you'd imagine. POPSUGAR got an exclusive first taste of the cereals, and let's just say we're glad the boxes are big because they're both insanely addictive. The two cereals are exclusive to Walmart and will be available online and in stores on Dec. 26.
The Chips Ahoy! Cereal tastes like you took a bunch of the brand's classic cookies and turned them into bite-size, extracrunchy cookie puffs. I'm not a milk drinker, but I can imagine that eating a bowl of this cereal with milk would be the best way to satisfy milk-and-cookie cravings first thing in the morning. As for the Nutter Butter Cereal, not only are the tiny, peanut-shaped "cookies" adorable, but they also have a creamy coating made with real peanut butter that's beyond tasty.
Several of my coworkers and I tried both cereals, and we gotta admit . . . the Nutter Butter might be even more irresistible than the Chips Ahoy!. Whether you prefer chocolate chip or peanut butter cookies, you're guaranteed to love these spins on two of the most iconic snacks. We can't help but be a little sad these cereals weren't around when we were kids, but that doesn't mean we can't be true adults and eat cereal for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

24 Times We Were Jealous of Sophie Turner's Perfect Hair
Sansa Stark's hair tells a story on Game of Thrones, and actress Sophie Turner definitely makes the most of her long locks in real life too.
She has such great hair, in fact, that she's become a Wella Professionals ambassador. The British actress has to dye her hair every week (nope, she's not a natural redhead!) when filming, so she knows a thing or two about looking after and styling it. Whether it's plaits or waves, she works it like it's her calling in life. And we're pretty sure she would suit hair any color of the rainbow.
Scroll though our top 24 favorite Sophie Turner hair moments.

Fact: it's impossible for Meghan to look anything less than perfect. From her positively glowing skin to her trademark long, wavy hair, the perhaps future duchess certainly looks the part of a royal. Ahead, find out exactly how you can do that, along with other makeup, hair, and skincare products that she's put her royal seal of approval on.

Why Riverdale's Reveal of the Black Hood Is a Letdown
Riverdale loves to keep fans guessing, and the mystery surrounding the Black Hood this season was no different. After fans came up with elaborate and convincing theories about who the killer could be, the actual reveal during the season two Winter finale was kind of a letdown. As Betty and Archie hold the serial killer at gunpoint, he is shot by Sheriff Keller on the other side of the bridge. As the killer lies lifeless, Kevin's dad confirms that he is dead before Archie whips off the mask to reveal that the Black Hood has actually been Mr. Svenson this whole time. Yes, really.
Turns out Veronica and Archie's suspicion about the high school janitor was true. While it's a shock for the characters, it's not that big of a twist for the fans. Not only am I not invested in the character like I was with, say, Jason Blossom's dad, but the show also disproves the theory about Svenson in the previous episode! Archie literally looks into his eyes and confirms he isn't the man who shot his father.
Let's just say I really hope Archie doesn't plan on going into law enforcement.

This Black Mirror Season 4 Episode Has One Hell of a Cast
When Black Mirror drops its fourth season on Netflix in early 2018, one episode that is sure to have people talking is "USS Callister," which pays homage to the early iterations of Star Trek with its fictional show Space Fleet. At least, that's what the episode appears to be about. With Black Mirror, looks can be deceiving.
But until the episode premieres, it would be good to familiarize yourself with the cast. There are a couple bigger names, like Jesse Plemons and Cristin Milioti, but what about the supporting characters? We're here to help you figure out where else you've seen your favorite Space Fleet crew member.
Sophie Turner Shares How the Game of Thrones Cast Reacted to the Final Script, and OMG
Sansa, why are you doing this to us?! After sharing last week that Game of Thrones will not return until 2019, Sophie Turner continues to tug at our heartstrings as she revealed a bit more information about the highly anticipated final season of the show and the tears that were shed. Turner recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly, where she talked about the emotional reading of the season eight finale script, and oh boy, this sounds like an appropriate time to wish we could be a fly on the wall!
"We had the read-through a while ago and at the end of it, we were all on our feet, applauding and crying," she said. "We had everyone there, everyone who's had any part in this. It was amazing."
She continued, "We closed the blinds and shut ourselves off from the rest of the world and had six hours in this room just reading it through and crying and laughing. We had our emotional bit and then we thought, 'Well now we've got eight months. We've still got a while to get through!'"
That gives us plenty of time to mentally prepare, while simultaneously filling our minds with all the theories about the last six episodes of the series! Will Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow find out they're related? Is Cersei actually pregnant? WHAT ABOUT THE WALL? Thankfully, each episode is at least 80 minutes long, which is enough time to answer all the raging cliffhangers we were left with after the season seven finale.
Turner's character faces "a new threat" in the final season, which she discussed in an interview with Variety. "It's a big challenge for her, without this master manipulator having her back. This season is more a passionate fight for her than a political, manipulative kind of fight." With Littlefinger dead, we're expecting to see a lot less manipulation than usual in Winterfell.
Through all the dagger killings and incestuous relationships, this group is one big family, and we cannot wait to see what the final season has in store.
