What I Learned From Not Wearing Makeup For 2 Months

I've had the travel bug for as long as I can remember; I just can't stay put for too long. Last year, before I'd even finished the last of my university work, I'd jetted off to the USA to stay with family for six weeks. From there, my boyfriend and I traveled around Southeast Asia, part backpacking, part nice (budget) holiday-ing. I'd managed to pack up my belongings in a bag of a similar size to the one I now carry to work every day. I'd also packed less makeup and skin care for the trip than I use in a single day at home.
I packed only six items: cleanser, exfoliator, moisturizer, SPF, shampoo, and mascara. That's it. I'd recently had an HD Brows treatment (which included tinting), so I didn't need to worry about them. I didn't even take conditioner or hair oil (though I later regretted this and bought some on my travels). To say I packed light is an understatement.
Over the first few days, I missed my acid toner, mists, and array of concealers to rid my blemishes and dark circles. But surprisingly, after the initial shock of only having minimal products, I actually forgot about my lack of beauty products and didn't miss having those extra steps in my day.
Although I've been blessed with a quite a good complexion, I still have my skin hangups. Right now I could tell you exactly where all my skin concerns are (two spots by my nose, a scar on my left jaw, and a weird blackhead on my left cheek). I stare at them every time I do my skincare routine, wishing them away. But I actually can't tell you if my skin was particularly good or bad when I was traveling, because I didn't notice it, nor did I care. I didn't have the time (nor energy) for a 15-minute skincare routine, which is one of my favorite things at home.

My skin has definitely benefited from using an array of products, and I don't think I could ever have such a minimal routine long term. However, I have learned that giving my skin a break also gave me a break from obsessing over every blemish and imperfection. It also made me appreciate makeup. When I did decide to wear a slick of mascara once or twice in the evening, I felt great - like really great. I was amazed what such a tiny amount of product could do as a confidence booster. Never underestimate the power of mascara!
Now, I'm not saying that you shouldn't ever think about skin care again. Although there is more to life than beauty products, I strive for perfect skin and I really enjoy trying different products to find what works for me. But, there are no benefits to scrutinizing your every blemish in the mirror twice (or more) a day, because it probably isn't doing you or your skin any good. Sometimes, the basics are all you need. Embrace your natural beauty and enjoy those no-makeup moments as much as the makeup moments.

On day 11 of Love magazine's annual Advent calendar, Gigi Hadid went where no model has ever gone before for the calendar and rocked unshaven armpits. While this year we've seen models break out their strongest moves for the fitness-themed videos, Gigi's body hair has added to the empowering narrative of the videos. While Gigi flaunted her best boxing and volleyball moves, it was her underarms that had people talking.
Some comments have commended her choice to go natural, with one Instagram user writing, "ARMPIT HAIR YASSSSSSSSSS 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏," but as expected, others felt differently, writing, "ewwwwwwww" and "I'm shook." Gabrielle Union Recalls the "Bullsh*t" Time Her Twists Were Called "Unprofessional"
Whether she's rocking braids, twists, a ponytail, blond highlights, long extensions, or her gorgeous natural hair, Gabrielle Union is constantly inspiring women with her array of looks. But, even as a successful actress and businesswoman (she created her own haircare line, Flawless), Gabrielle has faced scrutiny over her hairstyles being accepted as "professional." In a recent interview with Byrdie, she opened up about her experience as a woman of color in entertainment and society's beauty standards.
"There's a larger conversation with people of color when it comes to our hair and our skin color," Gabrielle said. "People will try to lighten our skin tones and alter our hair, which says a lot of about how we feel about ourselves versus how other people feel about our blackness and textured hair. We need to showcase the fullness of our beauty."
In a role where she was playing a "professional woman," Gabrielle wanted to wear twists, and producers dismissed her saying the style wasn't "professional" or "polished," but Gabrielle wasn't letting this one go.
"I was doing a project and with the character the producers were coming up with what they wanted to do for her hair," she recalled. "And they were like, 'She's beautiful, sophisticated, and professional.' I was like, 'Well, I want to wear braids.' And and they were like, 'Well, I mean, she's beautiful, sophisticated, and corporate America.' I responded, 'Yes, and specifically I want twists.' And they went on to say, 'We just really want her to look more polished.' I said, 'You all really don't understand what are we talking about here?'"
She continued, "The idea that how you wear your hair somehow relates to your character, your intelligence, or your wokeness is bullsh*t."
In an essay she wrote for Glamour earlier this year, Gabrielle got real about her struggle to embrace her natural hair at an early age. After 20 years of her hair "being used and abused," she knows what makes her happy. "I've finally gotten to a place of self-acceptance and recognizing that my natural hair is beautiful - and so is whatever weave I may wear," she wrote. "I'm perfectly happy rocking an Afro puff, my French braids, Senegalese twists, a faux-hawk, or an ombré wig, or heat-styling my natural hair with extensions . . . and that makes me a happy person in my life."

Target Will Offer Same-Day Shipping on Beauty Products - Game Changer!

Is Riverdale trying to kill me? That is the sincere, if melodramatic, question I pose for The CW's teen mystery show following its wild midseason finale, "Chapter 22: Silent Night, Deadly Night."
For starters, the identity of the Black Hood is finally revealed, only to be the lame tertiary character of high school janitor Mr. Svenson (which has to be a red herring . . . right?). It's a deeply unsatisfying and nonsensical conclusion to the serial killer storyline, to say the least. But you know what? The big Svenson reveal was eclipsed by another important moment in the episode: Archie and Betty's kiss.
YES! Or no, depending on which couples you're rooting for.
That's right - the two best friends decided to cut the sexual tension brewing between them with a knife their lips following their respective breakups from Jughead and Veronica. For some fans, the moment comes at just the right time. For others, it's an unacceptable and brief bump in the road for the show's meant-to-be couple: Betty and Jughead (I see you and respect you, Bughead shippers).
Regardless of how you feel about Betty and Archie as a prospective couple, they share a Christmas kiss (sans mistletoe, mind you) in a car while on their mission to discover the Black Hood's true identity. The sweet moment comes after Archie gives his lifelong friend the most perfect and sentimental gift at Kevin's Secret Santa party (a Swiss Family Robinson read-along that the pair used to listen to as kids). With Jughead momentarily out of the picture, thanks to his and Betty's ongoing relationship strife due to his involvement with the Southside Serpents, this happens:

See what I mean? Riverdale is trying to KILL me. Fortunately for anyone worried about a romance blossoming between the two, Riverdale stars Lili Reinhart and KJ Apa dished about the moment to Entertainment Tonight, and it definitely seems like it was more platonic than some might realize.
"To me, it shows that there's just such a genuine friendship between them and they just know each other," Reinhart explained. "Even though you don't get to see every little detail of their past or their history, when she says that they listened to it when they were 5 years old, it just paints a picture for you of how long these people have been in one another's lives, and it's just really sweet."
Apa seemed to agree (which makes sense, seeing as it looks like Archie and Veronica patch things up), saying that Bughead shippers "might not be happy" but ultimately shouldn't freak out. "If they're confident Bughead fans, then they've got nothing to worry about."

Here's Why the Sea Monster Sex Is Actually a Very Important Part of Shape of Water
Spoiler alert: FYI, we will be discussing a key aspect of Guillermo del Toro's sexy sea monster film, Shape of Water.
Listen, I'm going to cut right to the chase. I'm a big fan of Guillermo del Toro. Going in to Shape of Water, I was excited. It appeared to be an incredibly rich and beautiful story. The visuals in the trailers alone were enough to convince me that the film would be utterly enchanting. Long story short, I did love it. I'd argue it's del Toro's best film since Pan's Labyrinth. But even though I fell in love with this whimsical and timeless tale, even though I think it's a strong Oscar contender and one of my favorite films of the year, I left with one lingering question: did Eliza and the sea creature need to have sex?
If you're questioning the question, let me assure you that they do, indeed, have sex. Eliza even describes the anatomy of the fish man, who seems to have some kind of trap door down there that opens up to reveal his, um, fish-man-italia. In a later scene, the two successfully fill Eliza's bathroom with water, naked, and seem to have another glorious scene of love-making. All the while I wondered, did they need to consummate this relationship in this way? Could they have forgone the sex and still maintained the power of the narrative?
Ahead of the film's release, I hopped on the phone with Doug Jones, the human man who is inside the fish suit in the film. Jones has a long history of starring in Guillermo del Toro's films - he plays the Fauno in Pan's Labyrinth, Abe Sapien in the Hellboy movies, and more - and he has an even longer history of this kind of creature work in the broader spectrum of the film industry. When I asked Jones about the sex and why it was necessary, he actually gave a pretty incredible answer.
In those classic monster movies that Guillermo was inspired by as a child, even Creature From the Black Lagoon being a big one . . . all those monsters, the creature from the Black Lagoon, Frankenstein's monster, Dracula, King Kong, the list goes on. There's also a human being involved with that monster who finds empathy, sympathy with him. A romantic notion might be in the air over that sympathy, right?
So, Guillermo [del Toro], once he saw The Creature From the Black Lagoon, he developed a crush on both Julie Adams and the creature at the same time. And he really wanted that romance to be actualized and completed. He said that as a child, he even doodled them after he saw the movie: Julie Adams and the creature holding hands at the beach, on a bicycle together, having a picnic together. He drew multiple pictures of them in hopes that they might have gotten together one day. Well, this is the movie that he made now. He wanted to make the movie where the monster does not have to transform into a handsome prince in order to be loved.
All of us at some point in our lives have felt like we're the out-of-sorts one. We're the one who doesn't fit in. We're the one who's different from everybody else and we're not lovable somehow. I think everybody has that running fear [laughter], and I certainly can tap into that.
To be in a story where I don't have to change, I just have to be accepted, and where someone finds me beautiful. She sees the beauty in my monster-ness. And I see the similarity in her, too. We see something in each other that others find invisible, or expendable, or even distasteful. But with each other, we find the beauty in it all. And so gosh, who wouldn't want to tell that story?
So, there you have it. While it's heartening to see Eliza's bond with this creature, that sort of sympathy and camaraderie is a pretty common staple of classic "monster" movies. But to see a love story, to see a film where the creature really gets the girl . . . that's something we never see. So, yes, I was a bit incredulous about the sex in Shape of Water. But when you look at it in this broader context, it makes a lot of sense.

Just talking about his wife is enough to reduce Christian Bale to tears. The Dark Knight actor attended the premiere of his latest film, Hostiles, in Beverly Hills on Thursday and was asked about his relationship with his wife, Sibi Blazic, whom he married in 2000 and welcomed his second child with in August 2014.
"[My wife] likes to be very private. And, of course, I want to maintain that," he told US Weekly. "But we have a great private life. She's probably the most strong woman I've ever come across in my life." At that point, the 43-year-old reportedly teared up in front of his wife, who stood beside him. "And I . . . you're making me all tearful! I'm too much of a softie! I don't think I am, but then you got me with that!" he told the publication.
It definitely wouldn't be the first time Christian got emotional discussing his long-time love. Sophie Turner Shares How the Game of Thrones Cast Reacted to the Final Script, and OMG
Sansa, why are you doing this to us?! After sharing last week that Game of Thrones will not return until 2019, Sophie Turner continues to tug at our heartstrings as she revealed a bit more information about the highly anticipated final season of the show and the tears that were shed. Turner recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly, where she talked about the emotional reading of the season eight finale script, and oh boy, this sounds like an appropriate time to wish we could be a fly on the wall!
"We had the read-through a while ago and at the end of it, we were all on our feet, applauding and crying," she said. "We had everyone there, everyone who's had any part in this. It was amazing."
She continued, "We closed the blinds and shut ourselves off from the rest of the world and had six hours in this room just reading it through and crying and laughing. We had our emotional bit and then we thought, 'Well now we've got eight months. We've still got a while to get through!'"
That gives us plenty of time to mentally prepare, while simultaneously filling our minds with all the theories about the last six episodes of the series! Will Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow find out they're related? Is Cersei actually pregnant? WHAT ABOUT THE WALL? Thankfully, each episode is at least 80 minutes long, which is enough time to answer all the raging cliffhangers we were left with after the season seven finale.
Turner's character faces "a new threat" in the final season, which she discussed in an interview with Variety. "It's a big challenge for her, without this master manipulator having her back. This season is more a passionate fight for her than a political, manipulative kind of fight." With Littlefinger dead, we're expecting to see a lot less manipulation than usual in Winterfell.
Through all the dagger killings and incestuous relationships, this group is one big family, and we cannot wait to see what the final season has in store.

Who Is Kelly Marie Tran? Meet the Actress Who's Making Star Wars History

For years - decades, even - the world has struggled to understand millennials. We're glued to our phones, annoying as hell, don't take no for an answer, and, if recent reporting is to be believed, we're basically over. Naturally, that makes it the perfect moment for a revelation to arrive that is so perfect, it makes us all shout "it me!" - and that revelation happens to be an explanation as to why we are such a resoundingly f*cked-up group. Behold:

April 14, 2007. That was the night that Saturday Night Live debuted "Dear Sister," a digital short so inexplicable to our parents that it became instantly clear that there was one hell of a generational divide in our collective senses of humor, and we would never be able to see eye to eye on comedic ground. It wasn't the first digital short that the late-night show produced - nor was it the last - but it was certainly among the most memorable moments in viral video history, spawning a decade of memes and virtually destroying a perfectly decent Imogen Heap song called "Hide and Seek." But let's start at the beginning, and talk about the cultural phenomenon that was The O.C.
The O.C., at heart, is the story of a wealthy philanthropic family's decision to adopt a tough street kid (Ryan) and force him into semi-brotherhood with their geeky-yet-lovable son (Seth) and the duo's subsequent journey toward adulthood, often coupled with two young women of the same age (Marissa and Summer). Drama, sexual tension, a bangin' soundtrack - the show had it all. The New York Times, in its first review of the series, noted that the show "obviously owes a vast debt to Beverly Hills 90210 and to Eminem's wardrobe in the movie 8 Mile," adding, "Teenagers between 12 and 50 will love it." And boy, did we love it. So much so that one of SNL's star comedians, Andy Samberg, could not get the show - and in particular, an Imogen Heap song that played during the show's season two finale - out of his head. It's from this obsession that "Dear Sister" emerged.
"When 'Hide and Seek' aired on The O.C. we all became somewhat obsessed with that song. I remember listening to it on headphones while we were shooting with Jimmy Fallon on the MTV Movie Awards when we were writers before we got SNL. I remember being on a stage at Universal where he was shooting the pre-tapes and Jorma had it on his headphones, and we kept being like, 'God, that song is so cool,'" Samberg told Entertainment Weekly earlier this year. "We couldn't let go of the O.C. thing and that song, because Akiva, Jorma, and I were obsessed with The O.C. [The sketch] was 100 percent because of that the season 2 finale. It's a classic moment, and we love doing digital shorts about movie and TV tropes. The 'Gunshot That Happens Off-Camera, and Then Everything Cranks Into Slo-mo and Someone Realizes They Have Blood on Their Hands When They Look Up' is a move done a bunch of times, and we always really loved it."
In fairness, the scene that Samberg is referencing is one that will live on forever in infamy. I'm not even going to attempt to describe what happens, so spoiler alert, here's the clip itself:
"Dear Sister" hones in on the extreme melodrama of the scene and cranks it to one million. Dave (Bill Hader) is shot by Keith (Andy Samberg) and after Keith returns fire, Dave shoots their friend Eric, played by none other than Shia LaBeouf, and the three alongside Keith's sister (Kristen Wiig) continue to shoot each other over and over, and over - with every single gunshot being marked by the Imogen Heap song starting from the top (over and over, and over and over). The skit ends in equally dramatic fashion after two cops (Jason Sudeikis and Fred Armisen) arrive and find a letter describing exactly what went down ("Dear sister . . . ") and they shoot each other after reading it.
Now that I've typed this whole thing out, I can somewhat see how it is that my parents thought I was nuts for finding it hilarious. But suffice it to say, it was so perfect in every way. It was exactly the coda that The O.C. needed, and it became the inside joke of an entire generation - one that was far, far too hard to explain to the old folks who just didn't get it. For good measure, why don't you watch the skit again and laugh a little bit more? Can you turn it off? No, I didn't think so.
As @backtoyoubfs (who may be a genius, and is certainly now the voice of our generation) pointed out in his tweet on Nov. 26, "Dear Sister" is truly the moment at which it became clear that we we could never really explain the internet and viral videos and our particular brand of teen angst to our parents, and they'd never understand the way that the world had changed. But as Dr. Seuss may or may not have said many years ago, "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened." So while we may be the most f*cked-up generation the world has ever known, never forget that we're also most definitely the funniest people who have ever lived - even if we're the only ones who understand our jokes.

I'm 8 Months Pregnant . . . and Haven't Bought Maternity Clothes
I was standing over my suitcase, wondering if I could get away with an elastic waistband at the Chanel show; thankfully, comfortable shoes like sneakers and block heels were still a fashion thing, not just a "me thing" for my increasingly uncoordinated body and shifting center of gravity. I was five months pregnant, figuring out how to pack for my first Paris Fashion Week and, simultaneously, how to clothe a sprouting bump for the first time. I thought about my options, what I'd seen out there in the maternity market, and mostly it made me cringe.
Now, I think about packing for the shows three months ago and laugh. My bump has more than doubled in size (my pregnancy app tells me the baby is about the size of a coconut now, but it feels more like the Berenstain Bears' "prized pumpkin" is stuffed in there), though the clothes I picked strategically to feel "chic" in Paris are still some of the pieces I wear on repeat and will continue to, god willing. But aside from just a couple of necessities, none are actually maternity clothes.
As someone who loves fashion, I wanted my "maternity style" to just be my style. I hated the awkward ruched shirts with expandable seams and over-the-belly or side-paneled bands touted as "stylish," functional pregnancy clothes. They mostly came in neutrals - lots of black jersey dresses and leggings - that made me sad and looked so plain, like something for women mourning the loss of their individual style.
I vowed instead to shop regular women's collections as long as I could, sizing up but not surrendering to a look that made me feel resigned to - not celebratory about - dressing this bump. The only concession: maternity jeans (Madewell's look like regular jeans and feel amazing on, and Paige makes some pretty decent preggo denim, too). The rest I pulled from H&M, Zara, and some affordable lines on Shopbop: a collection of both body-con knit dresses with plenty of stretch, tunics, and flowing silhouettes to pair with the shoes and jackets I have and love. Some pieces I already owned worked well, too - a ruffled dress from Rebecca Taylor I wore religiously in my first and second trimesters (first, to conceal the tiny bump from coworkers), and anything with an empire waist.
Here's the thing about pregnancy: of course I noticed my body changing a lot, but does it have to mean a total upheaval of what you want to wear? Dealing with the emotional and hormonal challenges that come constantly for 40 weeks is enough to make any woman question her sanity. It's uncomfortable and weird, and your body does some truly crazy (and, yes, amazing) things you can't prepare for, so if part of holding on to my sense of self means holding on to my sense of style, I'm not going to let being pregnant challenge something as basic as waking up and putting on whatever I feel like wearing. As long as it fits comfortably, who says it has to be made exclusively for pregnant bellies?
Call it superficial, sure, but deciding what to wear has brought me joy for most of my life, and I thought dressing the bump should be joyful, too. This is what I've learned and the outfits I've loved, coming into the home stretch of my pregnancy - no maternity spanx or jeggings included.
I've Been Married 11 Years and This Is What I Remember About My Wedding Day
"If you see me shed a tear tonight, it's because they handed me the bill." Those were my father's closing words at my wedding nearly 11 years ago. That night was 15 months in the making. My mother and I pined over menus, flowers, cakes, and decorations. We wanted every detail to be etched into my husband's and my brain for as long as we both shall live. Four kids later, I don't remember any of that stuff.
For the most important day of my life, I chose a designer dress from a local boutique. It was beaded and gorgeous. I wore the dress for a total of six hours. Yes, less than your average workday. My dream frock ended up costing several hundred dollars an hour. Today, it is sitting in a Space Bag in my basement among Christmas decorations, old CDs, and baby clothes that I can't seem to part with. I have been busy this last decade and haven't had the time to get it preserved. Here's hoping my sewer line never backs up.
Even though I was terrified that I might drop something on my beautiful white gown, I was hell bent on having a meal that my guests would be talking about for years to come. My mother and I tasted several types of cuisine and put together the perfect menu. We started with a salad and then, hmm, might have been Prime rib, could have been White Castle. I have no idea. I may just put out a Facebook poll for my 200 wedding guests and see what they remember chewing on that night. Although I do remember devouring a $14 candy bar out of the minifridge in our honeymoon suite later that night because I was starving.
The cake was big and it was white, but I never had any of it. There would be none of that cake-smashing nonsense messing up my hair and makeup. There was, however, a for-the-wedding-album-only picture taken before the cake was whisked away. It was cut in the kitchen and never made its way back to me. Several bakeries, tastings, and endless selections were for naught. They could have thrown me a Twinkie that night and I would have been thrilled.
That one day of your life is about so much more than the details. It's about the big picture. If you can reflect on your wedding day fondly, even if you don't have every minute memorized, that's OK.
My mother and I visited dozens of bars, clubs, and music venues to see the best local wedding bands. I wanted a male vocalist and musicians who could play a variety of music. After months of listening to every group in the city, we chose the perfect band and paid them a ton of money. We even recommended them to family and friends and anyone who would listen. I swore that I would follow them to every casino and club in the bistate area for the next 20 years. If you offered me $1 million and 30 seconds to tell you the band's name right now, I'd be walking off with the $3 I have in my wallet.
As a little girl I spent hours looking at my parents' wedding album. There was feathered hair, pleated polyester, and more than one ruffled shirt. I couldn't wait until I had an album of my own to spend hours reminiscing over. I am sure that I'll get around to looking at the album someday, when I can find it. I am pretty sure that it is in the secretary, but I haven't seen it since we moved two years ago. Maybe one day my kids will want to take a look, too. I'll have to somehow convert it to a digital slideshow to view on their iPads, though. Touching actual books is so beneath them.
My parents did everything they could to ensure that my husband and I, their only daughter, had the most amazing wedding experience. And I assure you, we did. But I don't remember the details from my wedding any more than I remember details from last Tuesday. I may not know what my shoes looked like, but I know that my parents worked their entire lives to make sure that I was wearing them. The cake may have never made it back to me, but the guests who got a slice were smiling and laughing and enjoying themselves.
That one day of your life is about so much more than the details. It's about the big picture. If you can reflect on your wedding day fondly, even if you don't have every minute memorized, that's OK. If you can look at your spouse lovingly and say, "You are the best decision I ever made," you are doing it right. And if you can start saving your pennies today for the biggest day of your own daughter's life, you will shed fewer tears when it finally arrives.

Take Back Control of Your News Feed With Facebook's New Snooze Feature
There's never been a civil way to handle that twice-removed aunt or former childhood bestie who cannot help themselves from oversharing on Facebook. You know the one I'm talking about, that person who constantly posts photos of the same thing (a pet, a child, their meals) and clogs up your News Feed day after day. The statement that unfriending them would make is just not worth the headache, and honestly, you love to see what they're up to, but you don't want to be inundated with that (pet, child, meal) every time you open up Facebook. Well, as of Dec. 15, we finally have a way to properly filter our News Feeds - all while being completely invisible to those social media offenders who drive us up the wall.
The new feature is called Snooze, and it allows you to hide all posts from any given Facebook friend for 30 guilt-free days. The best part, though, is that you're not actually unfriending or blocking the individual - so while your News Feed gets a little breathing room and you get more visibility on what your other friends are doing, you can always view that person's profile directly and see all of what you're not seeing in your News Feed on your own time. The process is also simple; in the drop-down menu on the top-right corner of any post, click "Snooze" - and voila, you've just taken a much-needed step toward restoring your social media sanity.
Oh, and did we mention that this works for groups and pages as well? If you're tired of hearing about the same old bad news from a website but don't want to permanently kiss it goodbye, it's super easy to just Snooze it, too. One of the biggest attractions of Instagram Stories has been the fact that the feature lets you capture any moment in time without making it a permanent thing. That being said, if you're anything like me, sometimes you don't realize at that exact moment just how much you actually want to keep that video forever and how it might just be the best thing you ever made. Nine times out of 10, it absolutely won't be as good as you remembered, but having the option to resurrect a Story is something I've certainly found myself thinking about on more than one occasion.
It's that sentiment that has driven the biggest Instagram profile update since 2013: as of Dec. 5, users will be able to keep their Stories forever using the new Archive function - and display the ones they're oh so proud of in a brand-new section at the top of each user's profile called Highlights. And in case you were wondering: yes, unless you choose to opt out of using Archive, every single Story you make will be automatically added to your Archive.

Words With Friends 2 Is Here to Make You Fall in Love With the Classic Game All Over Again
It's been eight years since Words With Friends first graced our mobile devices, forever changing the way that we interact with friends and loved ones on the interwebs. The introduction of an easy-to-use digital board game to our lives enabled us to communicate in a turn-based fashion, messaging only when there was something to say and keeping a connection that was low-stress and easy to maintain. The world has changed immensely since 2009, but the game, which boasts a whopping 57 million active matches at any given time, has largely remained the same - that is, until now.
On Nov. 8, Zynga officially launched the second version of the much-loved game: Words With Friends 2. It's a separate app - so if you were waiting for your WWF app to update, you'll be waiting for quite a while - and while it retains the form of the game we all loved so much when it was first released, it also adds a couple huge updates that make it a brand-new experience that brings the brand to the forefront of 2017.
I got to test the game for a few weeks before launch, and despite the fact that I hadn't played in ages, I instantly found myself just as hooked as I had been all those years ago. Both versions of the game are compatible, so I instantly fell back in with the same group that I used to play with before - and once again, I found myself casually chatting with friends whom I'd lost touch with in the real world, but had a way to reconnect with via a brand-new board.
In the second iteration of the game, the standard match mode retains its shape but adds a couple clutch new features that make it a bit more fun. First, there's the social dictionary, which added 50,000 new words this Fall. Then there's the "boosts," powerups like "hindsight," which allows you to view in retrospect what the best word you could have played may have been, and "word radar," which highlights all the squares that you can play your tiles on within the board. There's also one really clutch feature - one that I hadn't known about, but which has been around for a while - that allows you to move to the next board in play without having to go back to the main screen, a feature I'd desperately yearned for back in the day.
But what really sold me on Words With Friends 2 is the two new modes that the game introduces, solo challenge and lightning round, as they wholly eliminate the wait time that I'd grown accustomed to since the very start. As a result, I've become a complete and total addict, eating up the fact that I can now play two different ways at any given time - without having to give a friend a nudge or start a board with a total stranger.
Lightning round is a multiplayer mode that throws together two five-person teams and challenges you to rapid-fire come up with words on a series of ever-changing boards. Your teammates are also playing, so the boards evolve based on the speed of those you've been paired with - and the first team to hit 750 points brings the game to an end, though you can instantly call for a rematch.
It's solo challenge, though, that's really captured my heart. It pits you against a series of AI bots that increase in difficulty, giving you a week to complete the full challenge and enabling real-time gameplay against a bot that's tailored to your level of skill and the experience you've gained in playing the game. Though there are limitations - namely time restrictions around how you ascend and the frequency with which you can challenge your foe - you can skip the line by earning coins through racking up points in "weekly challenges," enabling you to buy your way up the chain if you so please.
Ultimately, it's very rare that an incredibly popular game would go so long without an update, but with Words With Friends 2, it was so, so worth the wait. Even if you're a die-hard Candy Crusher or Dot collector, it's a nice break to return to a game that prizes you for your smarts and vocabulary - and I can't recommend downloading it right this very minute highly enough.

Here's What Those Russian Facebook Ads We've Been Hearing About Actually Look Like
Thanks to ongoing public hearings in Washington DC centered on Russia's social media meddling during the 2016 election, we finally have our first real look at what it is that Vladimir Putin's fabled troll farms were actually doing. The bad news? Much of what was provided as evidence by the House Intelligence Committee on Nov. 1 is not that far off from what we've come to expect from overzealous Americans on all sides of the political spectrum.
To be clear, only a sampling of the more than 3,000 ads that were purchased in the lead-up to the election have been shared with the public so far. But what is immediately evident to any regular Facebook user is that outside of some very, very misused colloquialisms and a few bizarre cultural interpretations, the extent to which the Russian infiltrators were able to successfully manipulate social tensions is staggering. Tackling everything from Black Lives Matter to gun policy to Islam, the level of sophistication and mimicry present is incredibly hard to wrap your head around, especially when put against a background of fringe voices that are louder now than ever.
Ahead, we've pulled together many of the images released by Congress as evidence for easy viewing. But as California Senator Dianne Feinstein said during the hearings, "What we're talking about is a cataclysmic change. What we're talking about is the beginning of cyberwarfare. What we're talking about is a major foreign power with sophistication and ability to involve themselves in a presidential election and sow conflict and discontent all over this country. We are not going to go away, gentlemen. And this is a very big deal."
From where we stand, with nearly 126 million Americans having seen these downright inflammatory posts and not having thought anything of it - well, we really couldn't agree more. And perhaps being able to put some tangible imagery behind the amorphous idea of Russian meddling will make us all think twice before we scroll past an image such as the ones ahead on any of our social feeds ever again.
