Why the Battle of the Sexes Was a Big Deal in More Ways Than One
File the Battle of the Sexes backstory under "you can't make this sh*t up." Starring Emma Stone and Steve Carell, the movie, which came out Sept. 22, tells the true story of the 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs - a national spectacle dubbed "the Battle of the Sexes" - that took place 44 years ago.
As a feminist and a tennis player who was raised by a feminist tennis player, I have always been fascinated with this piece of history, and the wild story definitely deserved to be made into a movie. The match was significant not only because - spoiler alert - King demolished Riggs as 90 million people watched on TV, but it also transformed women's tennis and women's sports in general.
The Impetus
Riggs, a 55-year-old former Wimbledon champion who had been off the circuit for years, put the entire event in motion. He was a proud male chauvinist who asserted that he could still beat any woman tennis player and that women belonged "in the bedroom and the kitchen."
I asked my mom what she remembered about Riggs and that moment in history. "He was just an assh*le," she said. "He did win some major tournaments back in his day, but he had a reputation for being a hustler. His time was definitely over by the time he did all that."
At the same time, women's professional tennis was still a burgeoning sport and fighting to be taken seriously. Feminism wasn't yet mainstream: a woman beating a man at tennis would be a huge step toward negating the idea that women were the weaker sex. Riggs initially challenged Wimbledon champ Billie Jean King, who was 29 at the time, but she turned him down. As King told NPR in 2008: "we had just started women's professional tennis, and it was a very difficult time for us. . . . Bobby kept saying, Play me, play me, and I said, Bobby, we're so busy, I'm so busy, I don't have time."
Instead, No. 1 women's tennis player Margaret Court accepted Riggs's challenge and lost brutally. As King told NPR, "he beat her like 6-2, 6-1. I mean, it was just annihilation, basically." When she heard how badly Riggs had beat Court, King thought, "well, I have to play him now."
The Match
Held in the Houston Astrodome, the match drew 30,000 spectators, including a number of celebrities. The Battle of the Sexes was basically the opposite of the refined Wimbledon tournament. King was carried out on an Egyptian "litter" - basically a throne - by the Rice University men's track team. She wore a tennis dress with a splash of sequins designed by Ted Tinling, a famous tennis-apparel designer. (The dress now rests in the collections of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.) Riggs wore a red and yellow shirt that said Sugar Daddy and arrived on a rickshaw surrounded by an entourage of women he called his "bosom buddies." At stake was a $100,000 prize.
Billie Jean King kicked Riggs's ass, with a final score of 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. Riggs was wrong, and King scored a victory for womankind. Riggs conceded gracefully, admitting that King had "played too well," plain and simple. The women's pro had prepped intensely, checking out the venue ahead of time and crafting a strategy to "run him into the ground" and win the first set. King and Riggs eventually became friends, and Riggs stayed out of the limelight until his death in 1995.
Some sources later speculated that Riggs - who had a gambling problem - had purposefully thrown the match. But King called those allegations "ridiculous." My mom also finds that theory hard to believe: "I cannot believe, as cocky as he was, that he would have let her win."
The Legacy
King's victory had a lasting impact on women's tennis. In 1973, the same year as the Battle of the Sexes, King founded the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), and for the first time in history, the US Open began offering equal prize money to male and female winners. By 2007, all Grand Slam tournaments had followed suit, thanks to the continued fight by King and other female players. The event also made King into a true sports superstar; she signed endorsement deals with Adidas, Wilson, Colgate, and more brands.
King came out as gay in 1981 and retired from tennis in 1983, after winning 12 major titles. She was also something of a visionary when it came to women's sports and women's rights: she helped start a players' union and an advocacy group for female athletes. President Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009, and at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, she was one of two openly gay delegates representing the US at the opening ceremony in what was widely regarded as "a clear message to Russia about its treatment of gay and lesbian citizens."
These 5 Upcoming Romantic Comedies Will Make You Actually Look Forward to 2018
Next year is promising a ton of exciting movies - like any year in the last decade or so, there are several epic superhero events and beyond-big sequels. But if you're looking for some movies that are a bit smaller in scale but big on heart, we have the list you're looking for: 2018's romantic comedies. With some cute adaptations and continuations of beloved series, there's a little bit of love out there for everyone.
Here's Why the Sea Monster Sex Is Actually a Very Important Part of Shape of Water
Spoiler alert: FYI, we will be discussing a key aspect of Guillermo del Toro's sexy sea monster film, Shape of Water.
Listen, I'm going to cut right to the chase. I'm a big fan of Guillermo del Toro. Going in to Shape of Water, I was excited. It appeared to be an incredibly rich and beautiful story. The visuals in the trailers alone were enough to convince me that the film would be utterly enchanting. Long story short, I did love it. I'd argue it's del Toro's best film since Pan's Labyrinth. But even though I fell in love with this whimsical and timeless tale, even though I think it's a strong Oscar contender and one of my favorite films of the year, I left with one lingering question: did Eliza and the sea creature need to have sex?
If you're questioning the question, let me assure you that they do, indeed, have sex. Eliza even describes the anatomy of the fish man, who seems to have some kind of trap door down there that opens up to reveal his, um, fish-man-italia. In a later scene, the two successfully fill Eliza's bathroom with water, naked, and seem to have another glorious scene of love-making. All the while I wondered, did they need to consummate this relationship in this way? Could they have forgone the sex and still maintained the power of the narrative?
Ahead of the film's release, I hopped on the phone with Doug Jones, the human man who is inside the fish suit in the film. Jones has a long history of starring in Guillermo del Toro's films - he plays the Fauno in Pan's Labyrinth, Abe Sapien in the Hellboy movies, and more - and he has an even longer history of this kind of creature work in the broader spectrum of the film industry. When I asked Jones about the sex and why it was necessary, he actually gave a pretty incredible answer.
In those classic monster movies that Guillermo was inspired by as a child, even Creature From the Black Lagoon being a big one . . . all those monsters, the creature from the Black Lagoon, Frankenstein's monster, Dracula, King Kong, the list goes on. There's also a human being involved with that monster who finds empathy, sympathy with him. A romantic notion might be in the air over that sympathy, right?
So, Guillermo [del Toro], once he saw The Creature From the Black Lagoon, he developed a crush on both Julie Adams and the creature at the same time. And he really wanted that romance to be actualized and completed. He said that as a child, he even doodled them after he saw the movie: Julie Adams and the creature holding hands at the beach, on a bicycle together, having a picnic together. He drew multiple pictures of them in hopes that they might have gotten together one day. Well, this is the movie that he made now. He wanted to make the movie where the monster does not have to transform into a handsome prince in order to be loved.
All of us at some point in our lives have felt like we're the out-of-sorts one. We're the one who doesn't fit in. We're the one who's different from everybody else and we're not lovable somehow. I think everybody has that running fear [laughter], and I certainly can tap into that.
To be in a story where I don't have to change, I just have to be accepted, and where someone finds me beautiful. She sees the beauty in my monster-ness. And I see the similarity in her, too. We see something in each other that others find invisible, or expendable, or even distasteful. But with each other, we find the beauty in it all. And so gosh, who wouldn't want to tell that story?
So, there you have it. While it's heartening to see Eliza's bond with this creature, that sort of sympathy and camaraderie is a pretty common staple of classic "monster" movies. But to see a love story, to see a film where the creature really gets the girl . . . that's something we never see. So, yes, I was a bit incredulous about the sex in Shape of Water. But when you look at it in this broader context, it makes a lot of sense.
10 Places You May Have Seen Your Sexy New Crush, Edgar Ramirez
By now you're probably aware that Edgar Ramirez will be playing Gianni Versace in the second season of American Crime Story. While it's obviously a major role for Ramirez, it certainly isn't his first rodeo. The Venezuelan stud has been acting since the early '90s, and in 2005, he scored his first movie role in Domino starring Keira Knightley. Take a look back at some of Ramirez's most famous roles before American Crime Story returns in early 2018.
Every Dreadful Detail We Have About A Series of Unfortunate Events Season 2
If watching one season of seriously unfortunate events befalling some seriously unfortunate children was not enough for you, we have good news: Netflix's adaptation of A Series of Unfortunate Events has been renewed for a second season (as well as a third)! Although official details have been hard to come by, a few key tidbits have trickled out to the masses (including the premiere date!). From the plot to the star-studded cast, keep reading to see what we know so far.
Netflix Reportedly Found the Perfect Replacement For Vanessa Kirby on The Crown Season 3
Season two of The Crown might have hinged around high-profile moments in Queen Elizabeth II's life, like her dinner with JFK or her trip to Ghana, but it's her younger sister, Princess Margaret, who steals the show. Thanks to Vanessa Kirby's exceptional performance, the fashionable, rebellious princess ends up being the second season's most relatable (and entertaining) character. Fortunately, it looks like Netflix has found the perfect actress to replace her in seasons three and four, since there will be a bit of a time jump.
Ocean's 8's Helena Bonham Carter is in talks to take over for Kirby. The versatile 51-year-old actress has appeared in everything from Fight Club to Alice in Wonderland and the Harry Potter franchise, and she has more than enough spunk to play the iconic royal. Concrete details for season three are relatively scarce at this point, but we'll likely see the dissolution of Margaret's marriage to Tony Armstrong-Jones and more ups and downs in her tense relationship with the queen.
Claire Foy, who's picked up a few awards for her performance as the long-reigning monarch, is also being recast. British actress Olivia Colman is stepping into her sensible heels and will no doubt be a great sparring partner for Carter on screen. There's still no word on who will play the older versions of other key characters, but might we suggest Colman's Broadchurch costar David Tennant as Prince Philip? Maybe Netflix can consult with The Crown's number one fan, the real Queen Elizabeth, for other suggestions.
Sabrina the Teenage Witch Has Been Cast, and TV Fans Already Know and Love Her
With a two-season order from Netflix, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was put to task with one important mission: to hunt down the perfect witch to play the lead. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kiernan Shipka, best known for her role as Sally Draper on Mad Men, has officially joined the cast as Sabrina Spellman.
Additional details tease that in this iteration, the spellcaster will be "fighting the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit." As for the character herself? Sabrina is "an empowered young woman, half-human, half-witch who is just beginning her dark education as a sorceress, even as she tries to maintain a normal life as a sophomore at Baxter High. Intelligent, compassionate and brave to the point of recklessness, Sabrina is all that stands between us and the forces of darkness that threaten our world."
The new Netflix project is a sister series of sorts to the wildly popular CW show, Riverdale. They both come from the Archie Comics universe, and they share the same showrunnner: Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. Last year, Aguirre-Sacasa teased the arrival of Sabrina within the realm of the dark Archie Comics adaptation. At this point, it's not officially confirmed that Shipka's Sabrina will appear on Riverdale in addition to the Netflix series, but we've spent some time imagining when and how she could be introduced. One way or another, though, Shipka will be casting spells on the small screen before we know it.

This Support Band Was the Only Way I Could Work Out While Pregnant
After spending what felt like an eternity in my own version of the fetal position, riddled with an almost suffocating sense of fatigue and round-the-clock nausea, I could not wait to return to fitness in my second trimester. My prepregnancy workout routine had always been intense - five to six days a week of everything from competitive volleyball to boxing - and while I had zero expectations of returning to that level of commitment, I just longed to sweat again, to feel a few beads collect on my forehead . . . maybe even with a slight endorphine rush to boot.
But things didn't go as planned. I wasn't able to even think about working out until the nausea phased out, and that didn't happen until month five or so. But returning to running was miserable. Even the slowest jog - I'm talking trot - was painful. The joy of running was quickly eclipsed by a hybrid of thoughts centered around wondering if I needed to pee and realizing I definitely needed to pee, plus pelvic pressure that would not taper.
I'd seen pictures of the the Bao Bei Maternity Support Band ($64) on Instagram and decided that, after speaking with my OB, this would be the thing I'd try next. It's advertised as a sports bra for your belly, and the concept made perfect sense. As soon as it came in the mail, I slipped it on and headed to the gym for a test run. The band made an enormous difference. I didn't feel any discomfort from it; rather, I felt that with every heel strike, my belly pounded less and the pressure on my pelvis greatly diminished. I still had to pee, but there was no solving that.
Now in my mid-third trimester, I do feel that I'll need a larger support band to get around my growing stomach, but the pain relief it's provided me with, as as well as the emotional benefit of being able to sweat again, is well worth another purchase. If you're in a similar boat and frustrated with not being able to work out, I highly recommend giving it a try.
If You're Classy but a Lil' Sassy, You Need These Profane Teacups
Looking for something to add a bit of subtle sass to your classy tea party? Behold: profane teacups, aka the answer to your curse-word-loving prayers. These hysterical Earl Grey vessels are currently taking over Etsy, and each one is the perfect mix of chic and cheeky. From afar, they appear to have the same dainty, antique vibe that normal teacups do, but once you get up close, you'll notice a curse word (or two) splashed across the facade.

Parents Who Post: What Was Shared vs. What Really Happened
I like to browse Facebook as much as the next stay-at-home mama, but in order to enjoy myself, I do have to remember that it's not really real. I don't need to tell you that Instagram and Facebook are inundated with happy posts of happy children and seemingly happy families, which leave many of us thinking, "Wow, they always seems so happy! What's wrong with me [my kids, my husband, my dog . . . ]?" Just remember, social media provides a very skewed reality of parenting. In fact, imagining what might really be going on behind the camera helps a lot, so here are a few (completely made-up, by the way) scenarios that you may find in your news feed - and then what probably actually happened.
When You See This Pregnant Doll, You'll Understand Why It's Making Some Parents Very Angry
Trying to explain to a soon-to-be big sister or brother what's going on with Mommy's growing belly can be a challenge, so one toy company created a pregnant Barbie-like doll ($12) to quell the curiosity. Unfortunately, the anatomically incorrect doll is proving to be more controversial than helpful.
If you can get past the fact that it's a low-quality imitation of the famous Mattel toy and not an actual Barbie doll (a common complaint among reviewers is the shoddy construction of the doll herself as well as the cheap outfit she wears), then you'll be struck by her bizarre physique. Not only are her legs offensively thin, but the removable baby is accessed via a giant, gaping hole in the doll's abdomen. Sure, not all babies are born vaginally, but this is also a far cry from what a Cesarean section looks like as well. It's, frankly, a bit distressing.
Despite the doll's shortcomings, many reviewers still found it helpful. Guess each parent will have to decide for him or herself if this is really the first impression of childbirth they want their impressionable, young child to have.

I Did This Once a Month, and It Was the Key to My Weight-Loss Success
I was determined to lose the belly fat I've had since high school, that progressively grew from my addiction to sugar, cheese, and refined carbs (aka Swedish fish and grilled cheese) in college, and then from two pregnancies. Running 30 to 40 miles a week and eating healthy wasn't cutting it - a big change was necessary. My youngest was 3 and a half, so the baby weight had overstayed its welcome big time. I went a little extreme and signed up for CrossFit. After one month of classes five times a week, I saw my body beginning to change and felt so much stronger and more confident, and I was hooked. I decided to give it six months, convinced I'd be completely ripped by then.
But I wasn't. Far from it. My belly fat was still there, I had actually gained a few pounds, my upper body looked thicker, and my sports bras and jeans fit tighter. I was a little embarrassed and very discouraged and seriously considered quitting CrossFit. But taking progress photos every single month kept me motivated. When the first week of the month rolled around, I'd put on the same Lululemon shorts and sports bra and take a selfie of my front, side, and back.
When I'd look at the latest photo, I'd frown a little, not seeing the image I had in my mind of my goal body. But then when I'd look at that photo compared to my starting photo, I could see results! My progression was slow. And some months, it even looked like I was going backward. Lighting, angles, time of day, what I ate the night before, and whether or not I felt bloated all affected how these images looked, so I had to remind myself that.
But seeing these photos and the small changes in my body was the motivation I needed. If I only had the disappointing and increasing scale numbers to go by, I would have felt very defeated. Actually seeing my body change from month to month, regardless of numbers on the scale, was essential to the success of my journey.
If you're frustrated by the numbers on the scale, or you're against weighing yourself completely and want a way to keep track of your progress (and your muscles!), get out the camera. Pick an outfit you'll wear every time, and take the damn photos. You don't have to show anyone. Even if you know you didn't eat great or exercise much that month, take the photos! They'll keep you accountable and inspired to stay on the journey to a healthier, more fit you.

This Makeup Artist Paints Geodes On Her Body, and The Results Are Mesmerizing
It's no secret that we're pretty obsessed with all things geode, as you might have noticed by our nails or lips over the past year or so. It's a trend that shows no signs of dying down, and we're still in love with the colorful crystals. However, this time, the designs are on the body instead.
Self-taught makeup artist Katy Tolj has created the most incredible geode body art using makeup, and you'll be scrolling through her colorful series for hours.
Katy takes her inspiration from geodes and crystals because of how unique the structures are. She told POPSUGAR that "ever since I was little, I've been so intrigued by [crystals], the shapes and colors." Katy also told us that she wanted to create a SFX cut-up arm look that wasn't gory, and make it into a beautiful geode.
Arms are Katy's specialty, but she's also done a full face of crystal art and wants to expand to her legs. We're pretty sure that if we had one of these, we'd never shower again.
She uses Lime Crime Diamond Crushers ($18), an array of chunky glitters (she couldn't pick a favorite!), and Huda Beauty #FauxFilter Foundation ($37) to create a flawless base.
We're wondering what she'll do next. Geode eye makeup? Full body geode? We approve of both, naturally.
Ahead, see some of our favorite geode creations. BRB while we book a trip to Australia for an appointment with Katy.

In addition to sharing sweet moments together on Instagram, the pair always make it a point to hold hands or kiss when they're on the red carpet - and there's a good reason. "We try to hold hands in public. I try to join her at movie premieres," Portner told The Cut in October 2017. "If we were a straight couple, I don't think we'd push it so much. But it's a chance for queerness to be out in the open." Today, we're celebrating the newlyweds by taking a look at their cutest moments together.
Get Your Wands at the Ready, Because a Harry Potter Exhibit Is on Its Way
If you need us, we'll be waiting on the edge of our seats until October. British Library exhibition Harry Potter: A History of Magic is debuting at the New York Historical Society on Oct. 5 and will run until Jan. 27, 2019. The tickets will go on sale for members on Feb. 14 and then to the general public in April.
The exhibit celebrates the 20th anniversary of the release of the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone book. It will take attendees through the history of the books and movies and the real-life magic and myths that inspired the creation of Harry Potter. You will also be able to walk away with a book on the exhibition, Harry Potter: A Journey Through a History of Magic. It's not exactly another Harry Potter book, but we'll take it.
I Gave Up Sugar For an Entire Month, and Here's What Happened
My last name is Sugar, and all my friends call me Sugar, so it came as a surprise to them that I decided to give it up for my New Year's resolution. I know I have a pretty intense sugar addiction, so I've had spells where I've cut down on sugar. But this time was different.
It all started last year. I had just started CrossFit and was unnaturally nervous about it. My stomach started acting up and I attributed it to either anxiety or a crazy stomach bug from the gym. But three weeks passed and I didn't feel any better.
I went to the doctor and told her I felt fine when I woke up, but as soon as I started eating, my symptoms would flare up again. And by the evening, I was keeled over on the couch, with crazy stomach pains and bloating, convinced it was a three-foot tapeworm. She performed tons of blood tests, stool tests, and I even had my first rectal exam (a good time made even better by the fact that I had to bring my 4- and 6-year-olds along!). I got tested for gluten intolerance and parasites, but she came back with acid reflux. WTH! My symptoms were down low, not up high. But to appease her, I took meds for a week, just to tell her that they didn't work. She was flabbergasted. I asked, "Could it be something I'm eating?" She showed little interest, leaving me by saying, "I don't know; maybe experiment with your diet."
It wasn't until right before Christmas that I figured out what was causing me this nauseating pain. For my husband's birthday, I made him an outrageous three-layer cake. I then went on to eat a lot of that cake, you know, because we had to celebrate - it was the right thing to do! I felt so horrible after that and vowed not to eat any sugary crap until Christmas came five days later.
It was a Christmas miracle! I felt amazing, totally pain-free, until I made vegan sugar cookies and ate probably 17 over the course of two days. I felt worse than I had ever felt, and then I realized - it was the sugar. Well, f*ck! I was happy to figure out what was causing my unbearable symptoms, but man, how could I live without sugar? It was time to find out.
Since my 40th birthday was on Jan. 2 and giving up cake was not an option, I decided to quit the white stuff the next day. So I gave it up for a month. We're talking no maple syrup, no honey, no agave, no white sugar or brown sugar, no corn syrup, or brown rice syrup. Nada. No chocolate, no alcohol, no cereal, no bread if it was sweetened or made with sugar, no sweetened soy milk, and no after-dinner ice cream. I did eat fresh, frozen, and dried fruit, but the worst was no baking unless I made cookies sweetened with dates or banana.
I'm not gonna lie. It pretty much sucked. Especially the first week. But I got my mom to do it with me, so whenever we craved sugar, we called each other up and complained. But after the second week, I felt amazing! Aside from curing my extreme belly bloat and other digestive issues, the acne I've had on my chin since I was 12 went away, I slept better, and I felt more energized. But one of the best things that happened was that my cravings for sugar went away. I also noticed that I wasn't as hungry. I think eating so much sugar made me hungry for it, but whenever I ate it, I never felt satisfied and always wanted more.
I was only going to do this no-sugar thing for a month, but I feel compelled to keep going. I'll definitely splurge on the occasional piece of dark chocolate, spoonful of dairy-free ice cream, homemade baked goods, and glass of wine, but it seems like my stomach is super sensitive and trying to tell me to something, so I'm going to listen.

23 Breathtaking Shots of Ballerinas Against City Backdrops
Ballet can easily be appreciated on stage or in a studio, but it's even more breathtaking when seen in unconventional settings. Photographer Omar Z. Robles beautifully blends dance and street photography, and the results are nothing short of magical. His Instagram account is a collection of stories told through dancers' bodies against urban backdrops. Rather than sneakers on pavement, you see ballet shoes, and instead of leotards and mirrors, you see everyday clothing in movement on the streets of New York and Cuba.
Look ahead to see exactly what this stark contrast looks like - this will take your admiration to the next level.
Saoirse Ronan Had 2 Oscar Nominations by the Time She Was 20 - and That's Just the Beginning
With Lady Bird in the running for a whole host of accolades this award season, Saoirse Ronan is once again in the spotlight. It was only two years ago that her turn in Brooklyn saw her on every red carpet in Hollywood, but this year she'll be back to take another stab at snagging a coveted trophy. The Irish-American actress has wowed us all in everything from teen sci-fi to poignant drama, and at only 23, it's safe to say there's plenty more where that came from. As we wait to see if it'll be third time lucky for this young star, get to know the girl with the famously unpronounceable name a little bit better.
I Did a 2-Minute Plank Every Day For 2 Weeks - Here's What Happened
When my team at POPSGUAR asked who wanted to try a plank challenge, my hand shot up. But back in my day (lol) when I was in college, a "plank challenge" consisted of taking photos of yourself lying face down, stiff as a board, somewhere crazy (it was a weird internet thing in the late 2000s). It was fun! This recent plank challenge however, was . . . not as fun.
I decided on challenging myself to hold a two-minute plank daily for 14 days to see if I'd notice any physical or mental differences by the end. While I was definitely feeling some toned and strong abdominal muscles, my biggest takeaway was about setting goals. Here are some things to expect on your own plank challenge.
You Can Customize It
Tip number one for this challenge: you can make it your own. I set mine to be a two-minute challenge because it felt like something I could do every day. Hard, but not so bad that I couldn't complete other workouts.
Additionally, pick a position that feels just challenging enough for your body and still accommodates for any discomfort or injury. I began this challenge in a high plank (top of a push-up), but a few days in, I decided it wasn't challenging enough, so I lowered myself on down to an elbow plank and finally felt a little bit of muscle shaking (woo!).
It Doesn't Get Easier
In two weeks time, doing a two-minute plank daily did not become a breeze. I had anticipated that a plank would feel like a cakewalk by the end of day 14, but alas . . . it was just as challenging as day 10, day four, etc.
You'll Feel Stronger in Other Workouts
One thing that I appreciated was the abdominal activation that ended up happening in my other workouts. I became acutely aware of my core and how I was using it in everything from strength training to SoulCycle. I did end up feeling like I had a stronger base from which to work off of - and since you use your core in basically everything, this was a nice little benefit of the plank challenge.
Feeling good about my strength and muscle from these planks!
You'll Want to Set an Alarm
I found that to keep myself consistent, it was important to set a reminder on my calendar. This ensured that I got it done every day and stayed on top of my small goal.
Two Minutes Is More Powerful Than You'd Think
One great thing I learned from this little experiment is that every minute in your day can be used for something powerful. How are you maximizing your day? What are you using each minute and each moment for? What are you wasting time on? Even a minute here or there dedicated to something that doesn't serve you can add up over time and deplete your emotional and physical energy. Channel your minutes into something that serves you.
You'll Learn the Importance of Setting Small Goals
If you're anything like me, you set BIG goals for yourself and often overlook the value of smaller ones. This was a lesson in not taking those smaller goals for granted and not undervaluing the power of adding something like this to your routine. If I can do a two-minute plank every day, what else can I do? Can I add two minutes of meditation every day? Maybe I could add one more strength-training move!
This small bit of goal setting reminded me of my recent conversation with celeb trainer and Revenge Body star Latreal Mitchell. "Limit yourself, and set realistic goals," she told me. "Set a goal for yourself that every day for one week, you're going to wake up early enough to eat breakfast." She noted that this was essentially the key to weight-loss success, but it didn't really hit home for me until I experienced my own minivictory.
This Magic Kingdom Proposal Featuring Winnie the Pooh Is Sweeter Than Honey
Abby Willard's favorite Disney character of all time is Winnie the Pooh. In fact, on a recent trip to Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom with her boyfriend, Nicholas Marella, Abby said Pooh was the only character she was particularly interested in seeing at the park. Little did she know her boyfriend would be proposing that same day - in front of her favorite character.
Abby told POPSUGAR, "Before we left for Disney, I kept telling him the one person I really wanted to see while we were down there was Winnie the Pooh, so when he proposed to me in front of him, it really meant a lot to me," adding, "Shows he actually listened!"
Fortunately, someone close by videotaped the entire proposal. In the video - shown in its entirety above - Abby and Nicholas take a few pictures with Pooh and Tigger, after which Nicholas drops down to one knee. As Abby processes the moment and says "yes," Pooh is pretty much freaking out with his little arms flailing all over the place.
Pooh lost his mind over my friend's proposal this weekend in Magic Kingdom. from disney
A clip of the proposal was later uploaded to Reddit by a friend of the couple, where it quickly received thousands of "upvotes." As someone pointed out in the comments, Abby and Nicholas could always ask Pooh to be their ring bearer.

Lili looked amazing in a striped two-piece bikini, while Cole went shirtless in a pair of red swim shorts. I Added These 4 Things to My Salad and Now I'm Not Hungry Till Dinner
I was feeling proud of being so prepared, making five mason jar salads on Sunday, but as soon as I finished my last forkful of veggies at lunch on Monday, I was starving an hour later. Then I'd end up eating a huge snack that was as big as a second lunch. No wonder I wasn't losing weight!
A jar full of carrots, peppers, celery, and baby kale just doesn't cut it. Even though I added beans to my salad for protein, I realized I needed healthy fats and carbs to satiate me for the afternoon. I started adding these four toppings to my salads, and now I'm full and happy until dinner:
1/4 cup whole grains (like quinoa): 56 calories, 9.9 grams carbs, 1.3 grams fiber, 2 grams protein
1/4 avocado: 57 calories, 2.9 grams carbs, 2.3 grams fiber, .7 grams protein
1/4 cup fruit (like 3 strawberries): 12 calories, 2.9 grams carbs, .8 grams fiber, .3 grams protein
1 tablespoon nuts (like salted sunflower seeds): 46 calories, 1.9 grams carbs, .7 grams fiber, 1.5 grams protein
The quinoa makes it feel like more of a meal, the avocado adds a creaminess that makes my salad more delicious, the sunflower seeds add a wonderful crunchy texture, and the fruit adds just enough sweetness that I don't crave a treat after lunch.

35 Plank Variations That Will Strengthen and Tone Every Inch of Your Body
A plank is anything but basic. The move simultaneously works the upper body and core without needing a single piece of equipment to do so. Adding the move into your regular routine will help you become stronger and leaner and can help offset everyday aches and pains. But why stick to the same old, same old every day when there are dozens upon dozens of exercises that take the traditional plank up a notch? Some task you with an added element of cardio, while others use weights to add even more resistance to an already-challenging move. If that's not enough, be prepared to work your balance and, in turn, feel parts of your core you didn't even know were there.

Permission to Freak Out? Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie Will Both Be at the Golden Globes
Wowwwwwww. The updated list of Golden Globes presenters includes two names that we definitely expected to see, but maybe not together: Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie! The actresses are both slated to hit the stage at the award show on Sunday night (maybe not together, but we can dream). Jen and Angelina have managed to avoid each other at nearly every award show and industry event since the 2000s - they've never really been in the same place at the same time - so this is a pretty big deal.
For five years, Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt were Hollywood's golden couple, but they ended their union in 2005 amid cheating allegations involving the actor's Mr. and Mrs. Smith costar, Angelina Jolie. While the couple insisted that there was no affair, they did admit to "falling in love" on the set. In a Today show interview that year, Angelina told Ann Curry, "To be intimate with a married man, when my own father cheated on my mother, is not something I could forgive. I could not look at myself in the morning if I did that. I wouldn't be attracted to a man who would cheat on his wife."
Brad and Angelina dated for eight years before tying the knot in a top-secret ceremony in August 2014 surrounded by their six children. They played an onscreen couple for the second time in 2015's By the Sea but announced their plans to divorce in September 2016.
Despite their, ahem, history, Jen and Angelina actually have a lot in common, especially where philanthropy and filmmaking are concerned: Angelina spent the majority of 2017 promoting her film First They Killed My Father, about child soldiers in Cambodia, and Jen, for her part, recently donated $500,000 to the Time's Up movement, which launched this week to help fight systemic sexual harassment in the workplace.
If You Effing Suck at Applying False Lashes, Give These Ardell Ones a Try
When it comes to makeup, I consider myself pretty skilled. I can conceal and perfect my base, contour my cheeks to the gawds, and nail a damn good cat eye. But even though I've been able to master all the beauty basics, I f*cking suck at putting on fake lashes.
No matter how many tips or demonstrations I get from pros, I can never get false lashes right. I've tried holding a mirror beneath my face to carefully place strips along my lash line. I've used a variety of tools like tweezers and lash applicators but nearly poked my eyeballs into the abyss. Not to mention the countless number of cat eyes and shadow bases that I've destroyed with lash glue (RIP). So instead, I stick to lifting my fringe with good ol' mascara.
However, a few months ago, fellow POPSUGAR editor Brinton Parker tested magnetic lash accents, and I was intrigued. The innovative enhancement looked really natural and convincing on Brinton, but the lash novice in me couldn't imagine ever being able to apply magnetic pieces successfully, much less dropping over $50 on a set.
But magnetic lashes just became more accessible for beauty newbies and experts thanks to Ardell. The beloved brand is releasing a range of magnetic, no-glue lashes that you can pick up at the drugstore. The entire collection (which you can get January 2018 at CVS, Rite Aid, Sally Beauty, Target, Ulta, Walgreens, and Walmart for $14) comes in full strips and accents.
Because of my sticky history with applying faux strips, the lash dummy in me needed to put Ardell's new enhancements to the test. See how they cracked up ahead.
