What Is "Crossushi"? We Tried the Croissant-Sushi Hybrid For Ourselves
Editor's note: This post has been edited to reflect availability of the pastry
Back in 2015, when I made my way to San Francisco eatery Mr. Holmes Bakehouse to taste the Instagram-famous Cruffin for a POPSUGAR story, I walked away with pastries on my mind . . . but not the one I'd set out to try. Rather, I couldn't keep the California Croissant - a flaky, savory, delectable croissant stuffed with sushi fixings - out of my mind, and I found myself regularly going back for more. So when, three years later, the internet finally discovered this delicious creation and dubbed it "crossushi," I was fully on board with the trend and couldn't wait for word to spread.
So, what's crossushi all about? Allow me to break down every flaky layer of this delightful food hybrid for you. Just don't go blaming me when your stomach starts growling - you're the one who clicked on this article.
What's in it?
Picture this: a classic French croissant, baked to perfection. But when you bite into it, there's a salmon roll with ginger and a bit of wasabi, and the whole thing is topped with a mix of dried sesame and seaweed bits (nori). It all comes with a side of soy sauce, if you feel so inclined, but with so much flavor baked into the roll, you won't even need it!
Isn't that . . . weird?
Surprisingly, the entire effect works really well! The salmon isn't cold and raw like in in a traditional sushi roll - it's a sort of smoked salmon that, since it's been baked into the pastry, has a rich flavor that doesn't seem out of place. The wasabi and ginger are very faint, and the nori seasoning that tops the pastry is a perfect finishing touch. Anyone who enjoys seafood and savory dishes will be all about it!
Where can I get one?
Unfortunately for my tastebuds, you can no longer find the original sushi croissant, the "California Croissant," at Mr. Holmes Bakehouse locations. But now that the internet has a new obsession with the savory treat, we can (hopefully) expect other pastry makers to put their own spin on the creation sometime soon! Don't give up hope about trying crossushi . . . we have a feeling we've not seen the last of this food trend.
3 Ingenious Cooking Secrets Straight From an Italian Grandmother
Like many Italian cooks, Laura Vitale learned a lot from her Italian grandmother. Laura grew up spending time in the kitchen, cooked her way to the top, and now hosts Cooking Channel's Simply Laura and YouTube's Laura in the Kitchen, where she has more than 2 million subscribers. After speaking about her chili mac and cheese recipe with me, Laura shared some truly invaluable cooking tips that she learned from her Italian grandmother and that every home cook can benefit from. Get a free cooking lesson by remembering these three rules, straight from an unbeatable source.
1. Buy One Cheap Olive Oil and One Nice One
If you cook with olive oil a lot, it's smart to have one cheap bottle and one higher quality, more expensive bottle. "There should be two different kinds of olive oil you keep on hand. This is something I've done my whole life because my mother and my grandmother do," Laura said. "When you have two different kinds of olive oil, a standard olive oil and a more expensive version, that more expensive version can be used to make no-cook sauces that have such potent, fresh flavor," like basil pesto and bruschetta. Save the cheaper olive oil for cooking dishes where the flavor won't be able to shine as much, like kale and white bean soup with Italian sausage.
2. Freeze Parmesan Rinds to Add to Soup
You might think there's no use for a rind of parmesan cheese once you've grated every last strand, but that's not the case - in fact, you should be cooking with it. Laura notes that parmesan rinds are a crucial component to flavorful soups, saying, "Having a good base for your soup is so important; it's something that my grandma taught me. To make [soup] even better, you throw in a little bit of a wedge of parmigiano reggiano cheese in the pot as it cooks. It releases all that flavor as it cooks. It's not only just for garnish, but hits it at a much deeper level. I keep parmesan rinds in my freezer for times like this - it makes the biggest difference in the world."
3. Treat Time as an Ingredient
The best cooking tip Laura received from her grandmother is to recognize that time is just as important of an ingredient as any other. "Never mistake the difference between what takes a long time to cook and what takes a long time to prepare. One of the most important things when it comes to cooking is time - allowing something to cook for a while and not rushing it. When you're cooking for someone, make sure it comes from the heart; it's a different experience. [My grandmother] says, 'Half the time I don't even want to eat, I just want to cook for people because it makes me feel good.'"
What You Really Want to Know About The Pioneer Woman
Ree Drummond of The Pioneer Woman has made us all feel like we're part of the family with her ultracomforting recipes. If you're a huge fan, you probably already know she's the mother of four and a city girl who's completely in love with her country life. But do you know what she studied in college (hint: it's not culinary arts) or what her first Food Network appearance was? These questions and more are answered right here.
The Smartest Shoppers Take Advantage of This Trader Joe's Policy
We reached out to a former Trader Joe's employee to ask him all the insider secrets of the business, and the best tidbit he shared is that you can return anything. This includes and is not limited to an opened box of cereal or a half-eaten frozen entree. He told POPSUGAR that it happens all the time. People return things for a host of reasons, including (here's the best part) because they simply did not like it.
Why would a company offer such an awesome policy that could so easily be abused? Here's my thought: it encourages Trader Joe's customers to buy more, since they don't have to take financial responsibility for it in the event they don't like it. More buying means more numbers for the company to analyze. The reason Trader Joe's is so adored by its shoppers is the company is always on the pulse of the hottest flavors (sriracha and cookie butter!) and constantly pumps out new riffs of what they've deemed to be a success. Any great company knows you must rely on numbers in order to give the people more of what they want!
If many people are returning a certain product, particularly because they don't like the flavor, that gives Trader Joe's even more insight. TJ's can use those numbers to discontinue the "failed" product or reformulate the recipe, as they've done with countless products including chocolate-covered dried fruit and salmon jerky.
Now that you know you can return just about anything, try not to be the person who buys everything only to return the half-eaten frozen pizza or half-open bottle of wine the next day because you were finished, rather than because you didn't like it. Stay classy, TJ fans.
The 1 Thing You Should Never Put on a Sandwich, According to the Sandwich King Himself
The perfect sandwich is a delicate art, and if there's anyone who's perfected it, it's Food Network chef and sandwich king Jeff Mauro. Mauro spilled his sandwich dos and don'ts to us, along with his thoughts on fatherhood, cooking for kids, and the perfect sandwich bread. Keep reading to learn his best advice.
POPSUGAR: What's the ultimate breakfast sandwich?
Jeff Mauro: Perfectly griddled sausage patty, everything bagel, veggie cream cheese, and pickled jalapeños, of course.
PS: What's the worst thing anyone could put on a sandwich?
JM: Mealy tomatoes.
PS: What's the best sandwich bread ever?
JM: The answer is NONE. Each sandwich has at least one appropriate bread to act as the vehicle.
10 Sandwiches That Travel Well
PS: Does your son eat what you cook? How do you get him to eat vegetables?
JM: Kind of. He always eats the protein we make, and starch (usually sweet potatoes) and veggies. He's still not eating salads or asparagus, but we've always fed him well-seasoned and well-balanced food. I guess the trick is, and mind you, I only have one kid, to really not give [kids] a choice. They have to at least taste everything you make.
PS: What's your ultimate Father's Day meal?
JM: My ideal Father's Day meal is a big grilled beef tenderloin. Pair that with tons of mushrooms, something cheesy, and lots of Mark West wine.
PS: What's the most fun thing about being a chef who is a dad?
JM: Taking pride in the fact that my boy knows and respects good food and where it comes from and what it takes to make it. Now with my restaurant Pork & Mindy's in Chicago, he can come hang out with me on the weekends and see food from that end of the business. Plus, I'm proud that my boy can crack an egg like a champ.

The Craziest Way to Cook Bacon So It's Simultaneously Crispy and Chewy
Bacon is traditionally cooked in an oven, over the stovetop, or in a microwave, but what happens when you air-fry it? Air-what, you may be thinking? Air-frying is exactly as the name sounds. An appliance about the size of a slow cooker contains a drawer with a metal mesh bottom for the food. The appliance blows hot, dry air on food to fry it with little to no oil. This trend took 2016 by storm thanks to celebrity endorsements from Gordon Ramsay, Paula Deen, and Oprah Winfrey, so what's the dang fuss all about? I busted out a Philips Digital Airfryer ($250) and a package of bacon to find out.
Having no clue how to air-fry, I watched a YouTube video on how to air-fry bacon and followed these instructions. However, I ended up with steamed bacon once the cook time was complete. It resembled deli ham more than bacon, and the fat from the bacon turned translucent and gelatinous. Perhaps this is the preferred method to cook bacon in Europe, but for me, I like my bacon crispy. So I cranked up the heat and kept cooking, shaking the basket occasionally and tripling the cook time, until I ended up with perfectly caramelized strips. I'm talking evenly cooked with no burn spots. Bacon never looked better.
But looks can be deceiving; the taste test would reveal the bacon's true tastiness or not. Remarkably, the bacon had a thin, crisp exterior that yielded to a fatty, chewy interior. I've never had bacon quite like this. The bacon also retained its size prior to cooking and did not shrink at all. The cleanup was a breeze too. I poured the extra bacon grease into a dish for later (it too was pure fat with no black char bits that you find when cooking bacon in an oven or on a stovetop) and proceeded to scrub down the drawer, which proved to be an easy feat.
Feeling confident about my air-frying skills, I proceeded to attempt apple chips and failed horribly. I mean, the apple chips burned and stuck into every crevice of the grid bottom. It was a nightmare to clean up with no reward of apple chips at the end. I know there's a learning curve to a new cooking device, so I'll try again. I'm dying to learn how to make french fries and fried chicken. Those will be my next attempts!

The Highs and Lows of Being an Idealist
There are two kinds of people in this world: those who don't care what people think of them and those who do. As much as I hate to admit it, I fall in the latter camp. I'm terribly self-conscious and always worry about how I'm coming across to others or what they really think of me.
Sound a bit paranoid? Welcome to the life (or should I say mind) of an idealist. We're a breed of people who see the world as what it could be rather than what it really is. Because, in an ideal world, people wouldn't think you're too uptight, too timid, or too boring. In an ideal world, there's no reason you shouldn't have that dream job, dream home, or dream partner. I'm an idealist to the core, and while it definitely has some advantages in life, it can also be incredibly trying. Below are the most common ups and downs of wanting everything to be better.
Lows
- Love (or lack thereof) hurts. I can't even count the amount of times I've shied away from what could've been a great relationship all because something about the guy wasn't what I hoped it'd be and I just couldn't live with it. Sometimes I'm too scared to give someone a chance for fear I'll end up falling for someone that doesn't fit the bill. I mean, this is a partner we're talking about; they've got to be the cream of the crop, right? (Otherwise, what will people think?!) A very unhealthy attitude to have, I know.
- You're a chronic overthinker - from wondering if your boss actually took that comment the wrong way to whether it seems like you're trying too hard by wearing a particular outfit. Sometimes it's as if everyone's out to get you.
- It's hard to let go. When you're faced with a less-than-perfect outcome for something, it can be seriously hard to accept it and move on. I always end up being overly engrossed with the how and the why, refusing to believe that a certain crappy situation is, in fact, real. My parents learned early on they have to give it to me straight: "Not everything is rainbows and unicorns."
- You are your own worst critic. When it comes to standards, yours are way up there. Because of these high expectations, you end up not having a lot of confidence in yourself. Sometimes you set yourself up to fail.
- You can be on the reserved side. It's important that others think well of you, so you take care in what you say and do and tend to be more of an internalizer. It's helpful when you actually need to bite your tongue, but in other situations, not so much.
Highs
- You get the best because you don't settle. There's always an article that could've been written better, a grade that can be one-upped, or more thought that could've gone into that project. You have incredible work ethic, and this keeps you on your A game at school and work. When it comes to relationships, you'll (hopefully) end up with someone amazing you love to pieces, because mediocre just won't cut it.
- It makes you a very caring person. Happiness is a top priority for everyone you know. When people are unhappy, you feel unhappy, so if something is somehow getting someone down, you do your best to help find a solution to fix it, fast.
- You have better friends. Something I've realized as I've gotten older is how much I've come to value meaningful, authentic relationships over knowing as many people as possible. Knowing you have a close circle of people that have your back and who you can talk to about anything is incredibly comforting and something to strive for.
- You fight for what you believe in. Dedication and willpower are big driving forces in your life, and once you put your mind to something, there's little that can stop you.
- You dream big - and then some. You're not afraid to aim high, and your mind is a minefield of possibilities of what could be, both professionally and personally. Dr. Seuss said it best: "Oh, the places you'll go!"
What You Need to Know About 2 Major Computer Flaws That May Be Leaving Your Data at Risk
If there's one thing you hope your computer can do, it's protect your information in a secure, thoughtful way. Unfortunately, a major discovery by technology experts identified new security flaws in nearly all computer processors that make everything from mobile to cloud information vulnerable to hacking.
The two flaws - called Meltdown and Spectre - have enabled hackers to steal sensitive information from computer memory via infected software downloaded to one's device for decades. Meltdown affects computer processing tied to nearly all microprocessors made by Intel and is most notably a problem for cloud networks used by providers like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google. Updates and patches to fix Meltdown are being rolled out and will likely slow systems.
Spectre is a more severe matter and has no easy fix because it relates to the physical design of processors that cannot be easily patched with software. A solution for Spectre likely doesn't exist as it's presumed that a new processor will have to be created to replace the problematic chips. The small positive here is that Spectre is more difficult to exploit. Still, patches and workarounds for the problem will become available until new processors are created.
Apple: yeah we slow down your iPhone
Intel: hold my beer- Tom Latsch (@bobojr2002) January 3, 2018
For those wondering if they are affected by this seemingly abstract problem, the answer is simple: yes, you are likely at risk since Microsoft, Google, Mozilla, Apple, Linux, Firefox, and more appear to be affected by both flaws. Those who should be most concerned are Microsoft and Windows users, but thankfully an emergency patch for these platforms has been released via Windows Update. While fixes for Spectre are largely unknown, Meltdown fixes are becoming available - although they may dock processing up to 30 percent.
If it sounds like computer security is becoming a major issue, that's because it is. As recently as November 2017, Apple's operating system was revealed to have a security flaw that allowed anyone with access to a Mac to override passwords to gain administrator access - not to mention Apple's slowing iPhones because of old batteries. Nearly a month later, hospitals and healthcare industries were revealed to be at great risk of attack, putting the health information of patients out in the open.
Thankfully, the matter isn't being taken lightly. Tech companies are scrambling to fix these problems to save face for neglecting a known issue. Public figures like Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) are pushing for federal regulation of computer security after a hacking attack damaged business in her state. These issues are as big as they seem, so be sure to take this story as a reminder to keep updating and securing devices - or, alternately, make peace with all your information being available to the wider world.

Here's How to Make Multiple Stops in Just 1 Uber Trip
Uber just made our lives even easier, just in time for the official kickoff of the holiday season. On Oct. 26, the ride-sharing app launched a feature called Multiple Destinations, which does exactly what we've all always wanted Uber to do: pick up or drop off multiple people at multiple stops, using just one single ride. No longer do you have to wait for several drivers to arrive before parting ways with your friends at a party, and it makes it even easier to make sure that your significant other or loved one gets to an event on time.
Adding multiple stops in the Uber app is easy. Just tap "where to?" and then click on the plus (+) sign to add the addresses you'd like to stop at on the way to your final destination. The driver is also instantly delivered directions to the next closest stop, removing the insta-headache of trying to explain to a driver how to get to a place that you may or may not have actually tried to drive to before. And the best part? It doesn't even require a commitment. The person who booked the ride can add or delete additional stops at any time throughout the ride, so that means when you get a text from someone who somehow still hasn't left yet, you can instantly swing by and add them to your ride, too.
There are some limitations to Multiple Destinations, but most of them can be accounted for by thinking through your travel plans before starting your ride. First, there is a maximum of three stops per Uber ride, so be sure to take that into consideration while figuring out your ride-sharing plans. Second, there isn't currently a way to map out each rider's cost based on distance, so you'll be splitting the ride equally across everyone you pick up - and if you know that someone in your crew is a stickler, you probably want to have that conversation before you arrive at your destination. And third, the feature is not compatible with UberPOOL, which means that you can't just try and split a more costly ride over the cost of three random people on the way to where you're going.
Multiple Destinations is available in the Uber app now, and for more information on the new feature, head on over to the Uber site.

It's Illegal to Cross America's Second Tallest Bridge For Good Reason (but People Still Do)
Almost 350 feet above the Skokomish River stands the Vance Creek Bridge, the second tallest trestle bridge in the country. There are no guard rails and no safety nets, and the decaying wood of the structure isn't exactly reassuring. Still, the views from the stunning bridge have made it a popular destination for adventurers and Instagrammers alike, and looking at the images, it's easy to see why.
Less than a two-hour drive from Seattle and situated along the Vance Creek Viaduct Trail, the Vance Creek Railway Bridge - which was built in 1929 - spans 422 feet across. It was built originally so trains and timber companies could access Washington's forests but fell into disuse in the 1970s. Though it's on private property - and potentially dangerous considering its age and state of disrepair - hikers flock to the man-made wonder to marvel at both the bridge and the incredible views from it. On a clear day, you can even see Mt. Rainier if you're brave enough to make it to the center.
While undoubtedly breathtaking, it may be better to view the bridge from afar to ensure your safety, and also because in the past, tickets have been given for trespassing.

Ellen DeGeneres Responds to Eric Trump's Conspiracy Theories: "I Don't Have That Kind of Time"
"If you know me at all, you know I don't pay any attention to politics, but unfortunately, politics pays attention to me," Ellen DeGeneres said at the start of a recent taping of The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The comedian and host was referring to Eric Trump's latest tweet about DeGeneres belonging to the deep state because Twitter was suggesting her as a person to follow. Yes, really.
On Jan. 3, Trump shared a screenshot of his Twitter follow suggestions, which included Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and DeGeneres. Along with the screenshot, he added the hashtag #DeepState. Ideated by conspiracy theorists, the deep state is an alleged group of government officials and powerful people who are currently working to delegitimize Donald Trump's presidency.
Shocking... once again, here are the @Twitter "suggestions" of who I should follow. #DeepState http://pic.twitter.com/6XYUS02j34
- Eric Trump (@EricTrump) January 3, 2018
Following the tweet, DeGeneres understandably had a few questions. "First of all, which one is Eric?" she asked, noting, "It's the craziest thing I've seen all week because I saw that movie with the lady having sex with the fish and still this beats that."
To shut down "rumors" once and for all, DeGeneres said, "Eric, I am honored that you think I am powerful enough to be part of a government conspiracy. I am sorry to disappoint you. Even if someone wanted me to be involved, I don't have that kind of time. I have my gay agenda meetings on Mondays. On Wednesday, Beyoncé and I host an Illuminati brunch. Then Portia and I on the weekends are desperately trying to have a baby." Watch her hilarious and incredulous response above.

Noted Antiweed Dude Jeff Sessions Is Coming For Your Legal Marijuana
Marijuana legalization appears to be an entirely net-positive venture. But according to decidedly yesteryear-minded Attorney General Jeff Sessions, the substance needs to be under close watch - and he's rolling back privileges instituted by former President Barack Obama to make his point known.
AP reports that Sessions will rescind Obama's 2013 "Cole Memo" that ensured federal prosecutors not stand in the way of state-level legalization. The memo refocused drug enforcement to more macro-level issues like preventing distribution to minors and ensuring substances don't travel across state lines or to cartels and gangs. Sessions's rollback will enable attorneys nationwide to assess the issue on their own, to handle federal resources however they please in their areas. The hope is to curb drug trafficking and prevent substances from traveling across state lines. The move is widely seen as a means to thwart the expansion of marijuana legalization.
The move is also remarkable as it comes days after California's launch of recreational marijuana on Jan. 1, a notable benchmark as California has the highest population and is the sixth state to legalize the substance. Legalization is expected to bring the state nearly $7 billion by 2025, a figure that will be more than a quarter of national sales of legal marijuana.
Dear Attorney General Jeff Sessions and @TheJusticeDept: Let me give you a list of things more important for federal prosecutors and federal law enforcement to pursue other than marijuana:
1. Basically anything. https://t.co/ctyJui7g4c- Ted Lieu (@tedlieu) January 4, 2018
Sessions's move is entirely unsurprising since his backward views on the progressive issue have long been a staple of his attorney generalship. His rolling back of the Cole Memo comes after simmering efforts in 2017 like devoting a task force to evaluating marijuana enforcement. Word of Sessions's Cole Memo rescinding circulated for some time, sparking debate in November 2017 during a press conference on the opioid crisis where the attorney general focused on how "detrimental" he views marijuana to be.
While the country - and states - awaits to see how the loss of the Cole Memo actually manifests, the matter of how "bad" marijuana is has been debunked many, many times. Most recently, the World Health Organization issued a report that the medical use of CBD - a compound found in marijuana - is entirely safe, posing no health risks. Moreover, repeated studies have revealed that marijuana is largely safer than alcohol. Yet over seven million people were arrested for the drug between 2001 and 2010, a fact that most adversely affects black populations, while it costs the states over $3.6 billion to enforce. Sessions may be hoping to end marijuana legalization to better the nation, but as has been observed countless times, his view on the matter will ultimately stand in the way of national progress as a whole.
