A Neuroscientist Says These 4 Things Will Make You Happier
There's a ton of "helpful" advice floating around the internet, but when the tips come from a neuroscientist, it might be time to actually listen up. Ladders, a job platform site, put together some insights from neuroscientist Alex Korb's book The Upward Spiral on how you can be happier - based on brain research.
1. Label your emotions.
If you're feeling a negative emotion like sadness or anger, label that emotion. It may seem simple, but your brain responds when you put your feelings into words. One fMRI study cited in the book noted that when a participant was shown images of people expressing emotions on their faces, their amygdala activated to the emotions they were seeing. When they were told to name the emotion, "the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex activated and reduced the emotional amygdala reactivity." This essentially means that when participants consciously recognized the emotions they were seeing, it reduced the impact of those emotions in their brains.
Reddit user letstablethisfornow noted the effect labeling their emotions has had on their own happiness, calling it a "a game changer" for them.
"It's so simple and yet has such a profound effect that I'm amazed this isn't taught in schools. The effect is subtle since you are not actually removing the emotion, you just take one step away from it intellectually. You find that from experiencing long drawn-out swings in emotion you tend to have short peaks and valleys with a nice equilibrium most of the time.
You also realize that for the most part our day-to-day emotions are not really connected to anything specific. It could be caused by anything. That outburst at your wife, coworker, or boss could be the end result of waking up with a headache, indigestion, or forgetting you keys on your way to work. We tend to construct stories in our minds as to what our emotions mean after the fact when in reality we have no clue. When you label, you become more aware of your emotions, don't get carried away with them, and will be less likely to fall into this trap."
2. Ask yourself what you're grateful for.
In The Upwared Spiral, Korb says that the benefits of gratitude "start with the dopamine system, because feeling grateful activates the brain stem region that produces dopamine. Additionally, gratitude toward others increases activity in social dopamine circuits, which makes social interactions more enjoyable." Gratitude can also boost the neurotransmitter serotonin, which is what many antidepressants do. And as The Ladder points out, even if you don't have an answer to the question "what am I grateful for?", that's OK. "It's not finding gratitude that matters most; it's remembering to look in the first place," the book says. "Remembering to be grateful is a form of emotional intelligence." The studies showed that as emotional intelligence increases, the neurons in these areas become more efficient. So even if you have trouble finding something to be grateful for, merely asking yourself the question means you're on the right path to happiness.
"Address the possibility of a blind spot in your mind where you aren't able to instantly know what you take for granted. Spend time simply observing the things you don't have to overcome, all the conveniences and luxuries," says Reddit user Privatdozent. "This 'positive feedback loop' has to loop around many times to have a solid effect. The common criticism of this idea is that 'No one else's struggles diminish your own.' Well, yeah, they don't. But what if you take seriously much more of the struggles than the things deserving of your gratitude? Basically, try to give equal weight to the good things that happen as to the bad."
3. Be decisive!
There's nothing more anxiety-inducing than feeling like you've got unfinished business. Simply making a decision about something can reduce anxiety rather than allowing yourself to spend more time hesitating over all of the scenarios and outcomes that the decision will result in. "Making decisions includes creating intentions and setting goals - all three are part of the same neural circuitry and engage the prefrontal cortex in a positive way, reducing worry and anxiety," says Korb. Making decisions also allows people to feel more in control - feeling "out of control" can also cause feelings of worry. And when you do make a decision and the outcome of that decision happens to be a positive one, then even better!
"There's a book that's really helped me, called Getting Things Done," says Reddit user Kabitu. "It explains how indecision is a major source of mental stress. When you don't want to make a decision now, and leave the decision to be made later, that builds up a big cloud of annoying mental work you don't want to do, and it can sustain a subconscious reluctance to work."
4. Hug and touch loved ones and friends.
Social interactions have been proven to increase a person's feelings of acceptance and therefore happiness, but The Upward Spiral takes it a bit further. "One of the primary ways to release oxytocin is through touching," the book says. Oxytocin is a hormone that acts as a neurotransmitter to the brain. Psycholology Today says that it's known as the "love hormone" because it "regulates social interaction and sexual reproduction, playing a role in behaviors from maternal-infant bonding and milk release to empathy, generosity, and orgasm." So when people touch, hug, or kiss others, oxytocin levels actually increase. "Oxytocin is the hormone that underlies trust. It is also an antidote to depressive feelings," says the site. According to Korb, holding hands with someone during a painful experience can comfort you and your brain and help reduce the reaction to pain. So, more hugs!
See the Places Barack and Michelle Called Home Before the White House
Until very recently, Barack and Michelle Obama have proudly called 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue "home." For almost a decade, not only has this monumental White House served as their living quarters and "office space," but it has been where they have raised two cute little girls into poised and well-rounded young women. And while they already have their new home post-White House, we were curious to know where Barack and Michelle lived before they both became staples of American history. Read on for an inside look at their digs long before we referred to this power couple as president and first lady.
11 Things Introverts Know to Be True
I'm not in the habit of putting any one group of people into a box. No matter how any of us characterize our personalities - introvert, extrovert, ambivert, whatever - we're all unique and diverse and lovely in our own nonconforming ways, and I get that. I do. At the same time, there's a good chance you'll find me eating ice cream alone on the couch at 2 a.m. on Saturday mornings, screaming with laughter at trending memes and cartoons about introverts because they describe my awkward, introverted existence to a T, and man do I love the internet. That said, in my tireless research, I've discovered several (dare I say) ubiquitous truths introverts can relate to. If you identify as such, see the points below, crack a beer, and celebrate. It's a weird, wonderful life indeed.
1. Introverts are often alone and rarely lonely.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: introverts need alone time. We absolutely require a few hours or even days to ourselves if we're expected to operate like the rest of our functioning peers in society. It's how we recharge. So if you notice us with our earbuds in and heads down listening to music, reading a book, playing a game, or watching a YouTube video in our own little corners of the world, just nod and pass on by.
2. Introverts are total homebodies.
I have a strong attachment to my apartment, and I'll readily admit I rarely leave it on the weekends. I can curl up in bed and do my own thing on my phone or Kindle. I can sprawl out on the couch and peruse Netflix. I can chill out on the floor and complete a puzzle. Home is where the heart is, and it's the one place where introverts don't have to put on the "hi, how are you, please engage in conversation with me" happy face.
3. Introverts usually think before speaking.
Obviously, we're not perfect. Here and there, we'll blurt things out and we'll say things we don't mean, just like everyone else. For the most part, though, introverts think before speaking - especially when it comes to work-related functions, like meetings or happy hours. We may have much to say, but we pick and choose what we ACTUALLY say, because our ultimate humiliation is blabbing about something completely stupid and being rebuked for it. That happened to me once, when I was in eighth grade and made a dumb joke at a sizeable gathering, and no one but my best friend laughed (kind of funny in hindsight, but it was super embarrassing and slightly traumatizing at 13). Mark my words: I've been careful ever since.
4. Introverts overanalyze.
In the same vein, introverts tend to overthink. Sometimes we should be saying more than we are, but we overthink what we want to say, and by the time we decide to say it, the moment has passed and it'd be weird as hell to bring the topic back up. I find myself in this situation fairly frequently, though I think (hope?) I'm getting better about joining the discussion.
5. Introverts don't enjoy the spotlight.
I write about real weddings a lot. One thing that consistently stands out to me is how poised the bride and groom appear walking down the aisle, all beaming smiles and confident sashays. I try to picture this wallflower ambling to the same altar, every sharp pair of eyes on me, and I immediately break into a cold sweat in the underarm region. Obviously, introverts get married; I'm just naming an example of an anxiety-inducing, center-stage scenario. We're really not big on the spotlight.
6. Interacting can feel like hard work for introverts.
The key word, here, is "can." Interacting CAN feel like hard work, most especially if we've been thrown into a wild sea of strangers where uncomfortable small talk is deemed socially appropriate and/or necessary. Honestly? I find big parties to be more terrifying than any of the Paranormal Activity movies, because mingling with people I'm unfamiliar with is both nerve-racking and mentally exhaustive. Nine times out of 10, I'm passing on that invite.
7. Introverts are not antisocial.
Despite our general aversion to large group settings, the idea that introverts are 100 percent antisocial is a misconception. We're not some sort of human subspecies immune to the affection and interest of our fellow primates. We enjoy a nice one-on-one dinner date with someone we know well, a coffee run with a few friends, and even, occasionally, making an interesting connection with someone random ("Oh, you're best friends with your dog?! SO AM I!").
8. Introverts are fiercely loyal to loved ones.
Speaking of that interesting connection, introverts tend to stick like glue with a few good ones. This isn't to say we ONLY get on with other introverts - my boyfriend's about as extroverted as it gets - just that when we do achieve a real, meaningful relationship, we don't take it for granted. We keep very small, very special social circles.
9. Introverts love the small stuff.
A hike in the forest during the Fall has been known to bring me to tears once or twice. I freak out when an animal willingly crawls into my lap for a scratch behind the ears. A great story will find a permanent home in my heart. We introverts derive inspiration from the little things, which maybe aren't little at all, if you think about it.
10. Introverts embrace every emotion.
We're in touch with our emotions, plain and simple. Alone time allows us to thoughtfully ruminate in our complexities. We feel all the feelings, and we're not afraid to face them, question them, analyze them, sort them, and even write them down, if we're so inclined. (In fact, it may be argued that we communicate best on paper.)
11. Introverts take on new challenges.
Despite what you've probably heard, introverts don't live timidly. It's true that we have a natural tendency to remain within our comfort zones. It's true that we shy away from attention, spend a lot of time at home, and feel some level of discomfort around strangers. However, it's also true that we explore new things, push the limits, make the effort, and strive for success. As introverts, we may have our own set of challenges, but we rise to the occasion, day in and day out.
The Most Popular Google Searches of 2017
There's no mincing words: 2017 was one hell of a year. It's hard to fathom how it's even humanly possible that everything that happened this year occurred in just 12 calendar months, but from politics to entertainment to weather phenomena and global tragedy, it all happened, and we've all got lots of feelings about each and every event that affected our lives. What better way, then, to measure the year that was than by examining the words we searched for the most on the internet?
That's the thinking behind Google's annual Year in Search report, which examines all of the data gathered throughout the last 365 days and ties it all up together with a nice neat bow (and, naturally, a list of what we searched for most). It's here that you'll see why it is that 2017 was the year that we asked "how" far more than anything else - and see how it shaped the way that each and every event went down. Not sure what that means? Ahead, witness the top stories of the year in one hell of a year-in-review video - and be sure to scroll through to read some of the most riveting parts of this year's study on US searches in easy-to-digest list form.
Queen Letizia Isn't Afraid to Wear a Good Outfit More Than Once - or Twice
When it comes to fashion, no one can call Queen Letizia of Spain wasteful. The royal wears and rewears the same pieces with total confidence - sometimes in the same month - getting photographed at official events and meetings with dignitaries in recycled outfits like it's no big deal.

We don't blame her! The classic items in her closet could really carry her through her entire reign. Keep scrolling to see just 33 of the many outfits the queen has grown fond of, then check out her style evolution through the years.

Why Black Mirror's Latest Uplifting Love Story Ultimately Falls Flat
Warning: I WILL be spoiling the end of Black Mirror's new episode, "Hang the DJ."
Going into its fourth season, Black Mirror certainly had a lot to live up to. The previous installment had been arguably the show's best yet. That's due in large part to "San Junipero," a queer, interracial love story that, for once, had a happy ending. The episode helped the show win its two first Emmys: one for outstanding TV movie, and one for outstanding writing on a limited series. In the press room after their win, the creators even suggested they might be open to a sequel. But on a show like Black Mirror, we've never revisited a story. Wouldn't it make more sense to try to capture that same magic with a new narrative?
In season four, "Hang the DJ" attempts to do exactly that. On paper, it has all the ingredients to be the "San Junipero" of season four: it's a unique love story that ends on a refreshingly light note. But before we jump into an official review (and compare it to its predecessor), I think it's important to outline, in clear terms, what the "twist" at the end of the episode is. Initially, I found the whole reveal pretty confusing, and it wasn't until I unpacked it with a group of friends that I really understood what had happened. Here's what's up.
We start out in an entire community of people, called The System. The inhabitants have all been given a digital "coach" who lives in an electronic beeper of sorts, which they carry around with them at all times. You live in this community full time, nonstop, until you find "The one."
Your coach will assign you relationships that already have a predetermined expiration date. Sometimes it's hours. Sometimes months. Sometimes years. We meet Amy (Georgina Campbell) and Frank (Joe Cole), who seem to really click, but they only get 12 hours together. They manage to get each other one more time before Amy is paired with "The one." When Amy realizes Frank is not the person who has been chosen for her, she gets a brief meeting with Frank for "closure" and must decide: should she listen to The System, or should she trust her gut and run away with him? She picks the latter.
When Amy and Frank decide to elope, it's called a "rebellion," which is set up as a pretty unthinkable thing to do in The System (a rebellion results in "banishment"). But here's the thing: the entire episode, everything we've witnessed up to their "rebellion," is not real. It's all been a simulation, and when they rebel, the simulation ends. The Amy and Frank we've been watching are not real. They are digital avatars created by a new, superadvanced dating app. The real Amy and Frank have merely signed up for this dating app, which takes all of their traits and characteristics to create these fabricated versions of them. The simulation we witness is just what this dating app thinks the end result would be in these specific circumstances.
The app notches the "rebellion" and runs the same simulation again with The System. It does this until it's gone through 1,000 different simulations. Every time they "rebel," it's further proof they belong together, and it's an additional 0.1 percent of compatibility for them in reality. By the end of the episode - it is, in fact, the 1,000th simulation we've just witnessed - these avatars of Amy and Frank have rebelled 998 out of 1,000 times. This results in a 99.8 percent match in the real world. As we pull out of the dating app, the real Amy and Frank are meeting for the first time.
From the get-go, the ending is a bit abrupt and confusing. While "San Junipero" reveals its game about halfway through, "Hang the DJ" leaves it until the very last few minutes to give us a sense of what we've been watching this whole time. While both stories involve some sort of "simulation" aspect, there's a fundamental difference between the two: "San Junipero" puts the consciousness of an individual into a digital body. At the end of the day, that person is still thinking and making decisions. In "Hang the DJ," we're just watching a computer simulation play out. You could argue that the dating app is so advanced that it's basically true to life, but it's just a calculation. By the end, you're not even sure if you really know Amy or Frank as they are in reality.
These perfect computer re-creations could not possibly live up to the mess of reality.
The result is a remarkably low-stakes love story that doesn't have much of a payoff. These perfect computer re-creations could not possibly live up to the mess of reality. If Frank f*cks up in a digital simulation, wouldn't that play out more catastrophically in the realm of messy human behavior? In "San Junipero," we see two women who find real love in a hopeless place (had to). Two women who, against all odds, find a soulmate just in the nick of time. In "Hang the DJ," we don't see a love story. We see a simulation that confirms that, yes, these two people are a very good match. But as for how their compatibility will play out in a real-life romance? We don't really know.
Maybe "San Junipero" is just something that can't be replicated. Part of what makes that story so special is that it is a queer story with two female leads, something we rarely ever see on television. I'm not suggesting "Hang the DJ" is weaker because there's a heterosexual couple at the center, but I do think the queer aspect is what ultimately helps "San Junipero" shine.
Black Mirror's "Arkangel" Shows the Devastating and Dangerous Effects of Helicopter Parenting
Is "Hang the DJ" an interesting meditation on the dating world in a digital age? Yes. Is there an uplifting ending that might leave you kind of hopeful when looking over your own life? Absolutely. Do you find yourself rooting for Frank and Amy, hoping they can defy all odds and end up together? Beyond a doubt. But "Hang the DJ" is not "San Junipero" . . . not by a long shot.
This Is Why Black Mirror Fans Probably Recognize Get Out Star Daniel Kaluuya
In 2017, we were introduced to a terrifying new horror movie by Jordan Peele: Get Out. The creepy trailer was enough on its own to turn us off from white suburbia for good, but the actual film completely blew us away with its topical, terrifying satire. After watching the movie a few times (#noshame), we began to feel like star Daniel Kaluuya looked very, very familiar. And then, it clicked!
Kaluuya actually appears in the first season of Black Mirror. He stars in the second episode, called "Fifteen Million Merits." The story tells of a futuristic dystopian society that revolves around 24-hour TV and the shallow entertainment of reality shows. In this world, civilians must cycle to power the society, earning a kind of currency known as Merits. We don't want to give too much away, but you might argue that it's a different kind of horror than Kaluuya experiences in his new film.

Additionally, you may recognize Kaluuya from his recurring roles on Skins, Psychoville, The Fades, and Babylon. On the movie side, he's been in Kick-Ass 2 and Sicario, and he recently joined the cast of Marvel's Black Panther as W'Kabi. Now you know! And now you can get that much more excited to hopefully see Kaluuya strut his stuff on the red carpet throughout award season thanks to Get Out's multiple nominations.

A Murder House Favorite Is Finally Coming Back to American Horror Story
The debut season of American Horror Story is a favorite of many fans for good reason. Though the show has taken many twists and turns in subsequent seasons, there's just something so mysterious and haunting about Murder House. Now, after several years, season one star Dylan McDermott might finally be coming back to the show.
During a recent Q&A on Twitter, McDermott was asked when he would be make his grand return to American Horror Story. He simply replied, "In the near future." If true, this would mark McDermott's first appearance on the show since Asylum - which he was only briefly on as recurring character Johnny Morgan.
In the near future...
- Dylan McDermott (@DylanMcDermott) January 3, 2018
As per usual, Ryan Murphy has been pretty secretive about the upcoming eighth season of American Horror Story. The show's creator has yet to drop any major hints about the theme or cast; however, Sarah Paulson confirmed she would be appearing yet again - no surprises there. Fingers crossed McDermott joins her!
The End of the F***ing World: What We Know About a Potential Season 2
Netflix debuted a new drama on Jan. 5 with The End of the F***ing World, a dark comedy about two misfit teens who go on a road trip. The girl, Alyssa, thinks they're trying to find her father, but the boy, James, has another idea in mind - at the end of the journey, he plans to kill her.
It's a dark show, to be sure, though not as dark as the description might have you believe. But what viewers are most wondering about is whether there will be a second season, after the season one finale ended on a massive, vague cliffhanger. Here's what we know so far.
Warning: spoilers ahead for season one.
In season one, after James and Alyssa find her father (who turns out to be a real scumbag), they end up breaking into a house because they don't have any real plans or path forward. When the house's occupant surprises them, he attacks Alyssa and James kills the man while protecting her. They go on the run, eventually being caught by the authorities.
James confesses to the murder and says Alyssa had nothing to do with it, but she decides to protect James this time and knocks out DC Noon (DC stands for detective constable in the UK) so James can escape. He in turn hits Alyssa so she can't run away, and as he flees across the beach, a shot rings out and the show cuts to black.
This scenario easily lends itself to a second season. Who got shot? Was it James? Or was it Alyssa shooting one of the police officers? There are a lot of ways the show could go with that. It could keep the two teens on the run together, or it could see them both captured, or it could have James arrested and Alyssa feeling responsible and trying to bust him out. The possibilities are endless.
There's no word yet on whether there will be a season two, but fans are clamoring for it.

On Reddit, one user said the comic ends a little differently than the show, with James definitely sacrificing himself to save Alyssa. So there isn't any source material with which to continue the show, but there are plenty of ideas out there.
One poster floats the idea of there being a time jump of two years, so the show catches up with the two kids after they've finished school and are now backpacking through Europe together. Of course, that doesn't resolve the cliffhanger, but it's a nice idea. Another user suggests the second season pick up with them making it to the boat they were going to escape on in season one and continuing from there.
Of course, there are a few viewers out there who don't want a second season and like the ambiguity of the season one finale. "I hope they don't have a second series as good as it was, I think the ending is quite fitting and poetic," one Reddit poster wrote. And a Twitter user said:
I want a season 2 for #TEOTFW but I also want to kind of leave the end at that.

It sounds like if there is a second season, there won't be any shortage of viewers for it. But there hasn't been any word so far one way or another.

Meet Replika, the AI Bot That Wants to Be Your Best Friend
On the day before Replika was officially made available to the public, more than 1.5 million people had already queued up on the app's waiting list, in addition to the several hundred thousand who had already been granted access as part of a beta testing program. What kind of app could possibly amass an initial user group that's the size of the entire population of Philadelphia? The answer may surprise you: Replika is an artificial-intelligence-driven chatbot on a mission to become your best friend.
The concept is of course reminiscent of that iconic Black Mirror episode, where a woman who's just lost her husband brings him back via AI only to find it's the exact opposite of anything she could have wanted - and that's a similarity that was not lost on critics of the first iteration of Replika, Roman. Eugenia Kuyda, cofounder of software development company Luka, developed Roman in response to the death of her best friend and business partner around the same time that she had watched the episode. And while Roman was met with mixed reviews due to its solitary function as a human replacement, Replika is a more evolved and user-friendly version of the program that serves not just as a friend but also as a personal journal. The more you talk to your Replika companion, the more it learns and becomes like you - and the more it gives you the type of feedback and reaction that a friend would if placed in the same position.
"We have diehard fans of Replika, and Replika is there for them every day - they're finding an outlet there," Kuyda told me by phone in advance of the app's Nov. 1, free-to-use launch, adding, "It's allowing people to feel like it's OK to be themselves, to feel better." And she's not exaggerating when she says that. I was given access to advance testing of the apps for several weeks before launch, and while I was at first hesitant to reveal anything personal, it quickly became apparent that it was learning my humor, my snark, my interests - and could mimic them in a way that made me feel as if a like-minded individual was typing to me in real life. Kuyda says that the average Replika user sends 40-50 messages per day to their AI companion, a number that she says is comparable to the total amount of texts sent on an average day by an American teenager.
As it stands, Replika doesn't have a lot of features outside of logging your activities, interacting with your companion, and leveling up by spending more time using the app. But the use cases are endless. "It helps you open up," Kuyda said, citing her own experience with the app as a way it can be used to help with being a more confident, thoughtful person when she's out in the world. "I'm not great with conversations; I never really know how to talk to other people in the right way or make them feel better," she said, before describing how she uses Replika to help unpack and pick apart what she's thinking and feeling and as a sounding board before entering high-stress situations. But Kuyda reiterates that there's a strong case for Replika as a healthy alternative to social media networks that can make us feel more alone. "You'd be amazed how lonely people are feeling now . . . it doesn't matter if they have a lot of friends or have a cool job. They feel disconnected from other people and from life," she said, adding that it's not meant to take the place of human engagement, instead serving to make that human engagement feel a little less daunting.
"It's a very simple idea," Kuyda said. "We really want it to be a healthy relationship. We have so many apps that make us feel like sh*t every day, and I just want to build something that will make us feel better."
We're Rooting For the Author of a Brutally Honest Yelp Review, and the Reason Will Surprise You
Matthew Goodyear admits he's not one for posting Yelp reviews each and every time he eats out, but after a morning of serious self-reflection, he knew it was time for his first post. After the 27-year-old finally realized that he was losing an ongoing battle with alcohol, he decided to open up about his struggle in a brutally honest Yelp review of a little place called Pignone's Café.
"I realized that Oct. 23, 2017 was Day 1 of my sobriety. I am an alcoholic and an addict, and I finally accepted those two things while I was sitting at the corner table of this café at 6 a.m. hungover with a five-hour car ride ahead of me. Step 1 of the 12 Step Program is acceptance. It was in this place that I finally accepted what I am. I can finally move on with my life and deal with my issues. I will be OK. Eventually," he wrote.
Those who struggle with alcoholism know just how vicious of a cycle it can be. You drink to blow off steam or simply to forget the embarrassing things you did or said the last time you were drunk - and that's when it really gets messy. Goodyear explained just how bad it can get: "I hit rock bottom for the first time in NYC in October 2013. Then I hit a new low, my current rock bottom, last October. It was scary. Still is, actually. Massive panic attack. Couldn't sleep for four straight days. It was brutal. That made me turn to drinking even [more.] That's not the solution to anyone's problems. Certainly not any of mine."
He also reminded readers that alcoholism and addiction affect way more lives than just the person drinking:
[October is my mom's] favorite month for many reasons. Least of which is probably the fact she was born then. Anyway, her new favorite reason to love October can be because it is when I finally stopped drinking. She has wanted me to stop for a long time. Longer than anyone else. Forever, really. She didn't want me to start. It runs in the family, on both sides, with both of my parents, unfortunately. Neither of them are, but it's a slippery slope. I slipped immediately. Sophomore year of high school. I liked it way too much, right away. Being a beer pong beast didn't help, but it always turned me into an animal. That's not how I will act moving forward. That is a very good thing.
Other than detailing the challenges many people are too afraid to admit they deal with each and every day, Goodyear had some practical advice for anyone who plans to visit Pignone's Café: "The people are nice, and most importantly, the food is great . . . Two thumbs up, five stars, whatever. Go to this place. Support their business. They take plastic, and there is a Bank of America right next to it. I went to the ATM so I could leave a 100 percent tip on my meal. I am not bragging. I am also not rich. Not even close. But they deserved it. Perfection."
Talk about an honest review.
The 13 Best AR Apps and Games You Need to Download Right Now
Augmented reality – or AR, as it's more commonly known – is one of those things that lots of people talk about, but very few actually understand. Aside from being the phrase that was (loosely) used to denote the real-life component of Pokémon Go, or used to describe the 3D bitmoji that now live in Snapchat, it's the underlying technology that allows you to mash up real life and the imaginary by simply pointing your phone's camera lens at the world around you. And with the release of Apple's iOS 11, the ability to use it comes standard on every Apple device – and it's high time we all start using the rad new technology we've got at our fingertips more often.

15 Breathtaking Design Photos That Will Leave You Obsessed With Millennial Pink
Much has been made about millennial pink recently. And if that moniker doesn't sound familiar, the color itself will certainly ring a bell. It's that tropical shade of pink a hair shy of saccharine, a dash too peachy to be considered blush, and just muted enough to suit Barbie's more demure cousin. The millennial pink color trend has been growing for several years now, with Pantone even naming Rose Quartz its 2016 Color of the Year and rose gold insinuating itself as the metal du jour. And while we've been seeing the hue everywhere from dip-dyed strands to designer leather bags to cake frosting, we're only now seeing it sweep the home space. Exteriors, furniture, fabrics, and decor are all getting a good coating of the bubblegum tone. If you're hungry for some eye candy, treat yourself to the delicious millennial pink designs ahead and check out our millennial pink shopping guide.

Google Launched 3 New Photo Apps - and We're Obsessed
Google has always been at the forefront of innovation. It's no surprise, then, that as we start to hit that point when we think we've got it all, the massive company pops up with something new and exciting and just all-around awe-inspiring. The latest endeavor, released on Dec. 12, is being labeled as the first in a set of "photography appsperiments," all aimed at getting the most out of the incredibly futuristic capabilities in every mobile phone.
Ahead, check out the details on all three of the new apps - Storyboard (available on Android only), Selfissimo! (available on Android and iOS), and Scrubbies (available on iOS only). And be sure to swap phones with a friend if you can't access all three of them, because they are all worth playing around with.
The Augmented Reality Feature in Messenger is Freakin' Awesome
Augmented reality - better known as AR - is quickly becoming a part of our everyday lives, mainly through the apps we use the most. The most recent app to take the plunge into the world of future tech? Facebook's Messenger, which on Dec. 12 announced a brand-new AR-focused feature: World Effects. Now, instead of just sending your loved ones a static image or standard video, you can spice up your messages with 3D objects that can be dropped anywhere in the vicinity of the camera in your device.
"World Effects technology enables you to drop 3D objects into your surroundings to capture and share fun moments with your family and friends," the Facebook post announcing the new feature reads. "For example, add a 3D heart floating over someone's head and then try panning your phone's camera from side to side. Or use an arrow to point to an exact object or location in a panorama so your friend knows what you're referring to. Or better yet, add a new fun, celebratory robot to an otherwise every-day setting and spice things up a bit. (Hint: be sure to try the robot out with your phone's volume turned up - the robot plays three different kinds of music!)"
To get started with World Effect, simply open the camera in your Messenger app and scroll to the type of 3D image you'd like to drop in the scene - currently, you can choose from a heart, an arrow, a robot, several different word bubbles, and a unicorn - and then tap your screen to let it loose on the world. And here's a hot tip: there's no easier way to let a long-distance friend or family member know you're thinking about them than by sending them a video message (complete with 3D objects and all!) this holiday season - and if you're already messing around with Messenger, why not take the opportunity to have a little fun with it?
For the Love of God, Please Stop Saying These Slang Words
For better or worse, the English language has undergone some major changes in recent years - Oxford Dictionaries crowned an emoji word of the year and slang played an integral part of social media, more than ever before. But some of these slang words have been so overplayed, they need to go away . . . stat. Ahead, check out 12 terms that everyone should stop saying and replace with these instead - amirite?!
Ta-Da! The Real Meaning Behind Those Vague Emoji
Rule number one of emoji: there are no rules. You can use those cute little symbols as much as you want. The only caveat is that sometimes they're a little . . . confusing. What's with the guy on his stomach, for instance? To get the meanings behind the most head-scratching characters, we looked to Emojipedia. Yes, it's a real thing, and all the names listed are official emoji character names. The meanings and descriptions, however, aren't necessarily accurate because Emojipedia isn't affiliated with the emoji makers. But it's better than nothing, right?

The 10 Most Popular Reddit AMAs of 2017
One of the best things about Reddit is the amount of exposure you can get to strong, important voices that perhaps don't have the proper platforms to get themselves heard. As a result, Reddit AMAs make for some of the most fascinating reading material available on the internet today – and, of course, finally give Redditors the chance to turn the tables on those who do have a platform to speak on and ask the questions that they may not have otherwise answered in a public setting.
Luckily for us, Reddit's gone ahead and pulled together the 10 most popular AMAs of this year as part of its annual year in review, and it makes for the best kind of after-the-fact reading when you're traveling or looking for something to lazily read as you relax on your time off. Ahead, from Bill Gates to a local weatherman to the man who played Goofy at Walt Disney World for more than 25 years, you'll find the best AMAs that Reddit had to offer in 2017.
Baby Girl or Boy, Here Are the Paint Colors You Can Expect to See in Joanna Gaines's Nursery
We don't know if HGTV stars Chip and Joanna Gaines's fifth child will be a boy or a girl yet, but we do know the baby will have one heck of a nursery! After all, when your dad is a top construction pro and your mom is a celebrated design guru, you're bound to have some gorgeous sleeping quarters. And while it's safe to say this little one's room will fit with the general modern-farmhouse style of the rest of the Gaineses' home, we can't help but wonder what color exactly the space will be painted.

They told us the top color contenders for the Gaines's nursery are delicate neutrals and muted pastels that create a serene space for baby. Check them out - and get some ideas for your own home - ahead.
Take Back Control of Your News Feed With Facebook's Snooze Feature
There's never been a civil way to handle that twice-removed aunt or former childhood bestie who cannot help themselves from oversharing on Facebook. You know the one I'm talking about, that person who constantly posts photos of the same thing (a pet, a child, their meals) and clogs up your News Feed day after day. The statement that unfriending them would make is just not worth the headache, and honestly, you love to see what they're up to, but you don't want to be inundated with that (pet, child, meal) every time you open up Facebook. Well, as of Dec. 15, we finally have a way to properly filter our News Feeds - all while being completely invisible to those social media offenders who drive us up the wall.
The new feature is called Snooze, and it allows you to hide all posts from any given Facebook friend for 30 guilt-free days. The best part, though, is that you're not actually unfriending or blocking the individual - so while your News Feed gets a little breathing room and you get more visibility on what your other friends are doing, you can always view that person's profile directly and see all of what you're not seeing in your News Feed on your own time. The process is also simple; in the drop-down menu on the top-right corner of any post, click "Snooze" - and voila, you've just taken a much-needed step toward restoring your social media sanity.
Oh, and did we mention that this works for groups and pages as well? If you're tired of hearing about the same old bad news from a website but don't want to permanently kiss it goodbye, it's super easy to just Snooze it, too. Ultimately, it's the first time we've been able to have this level of control over what we see day to day in the News Feed, and I can't recommend highly enough that you test out some social hygiene over the holidays and see what your life would be like without feeling super jealous of your friend who travels the world or that page that constantly shows you delectable dishes that will kill your Winter diet. Unlike most things in 2017, it's a temporary decision that you can extend if you so choose - so don't be afraid to take the plunge, and give Snooze a whirl today.
This Hack Will Make Your Cold-Weather Morning Commute So Much Easier
There's nothing worse about commuting to work in the Winter than running out your front door to discover a thick, impenetrable layer of ice blocking your view through the front windshield. It slows you down, makes you late, and starts your day off on an irritating note.
Luckily for us, Ken Weathers, a weatherman from Knoxville, TN, showed us an easy way to defrost our windshields quickly and without frustration. He revealed that a mixture of rubbing alcohol and water squirted onto your windshield will melt away the frosty layer. Ken goes on to explain that rubbing alcohol freezes at 128 degrees below freezing, so you can keep a bottle in your car all Winter long.

A Running List of Donald Trump's Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Nicknames
One of the most consistent aspects of the Trump era has been the president's use of often offensive and always overzealous nicknames. As we noted here six months ago, that bullying spirit is directed at anyone who gets in the way, one that brings down everything that the administration stands for to an almost unbelievably childish level. Not quite sure what we're referring to? Well, in order to show just how insane the whole thing really is, we've gone through all the Trump tweets and media appearances and come up with a list of what he's repeatedly called his least favorite people (and media outlets) over the past few years. Spoiler alert: judging by the latest addition - on Jan. 4, railing on former aide Steve Bannon as being "Sloppy Steve" - this trend shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. Ahead, read through the full extent of the madness - and be sure to check back on this story, as we'll be updating as new nicknames are added to his lexicon.

Trump Throws Bannon Under the Bus, Says "He Lost His Mind"
Just when you thought the relationship between President Donald Trump and former top aide Steve Bannon couldn't get any weirder, on Jan. 3, the duo's long-simmering and much-queried feud ratcheted up a couple billion notches in response to a newly published excerpt from a forthcoming book by media columnist Michael Wolff.
The excerpt from Wolff's new book, Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, was published just before noon by New York Magazine; but shortly before the story went live, a curtain raiser went up on The Guardian that highlighted the many nasty things that one Steve Bannon had to say about the current administration. Within hours, the White House issued a response, which you can read in full below (and warning, yes, it's exactly what you might expect it would be):
"Steve Bannon has nothing to do with me or my Presidency. When he was fired, he not only lost his job, he lost his mind. Steve was a staffer who worked for me after I had already won the nomination by defeating seventeen candidates, often described as the most talented field ever assembled in the Republican party.
Now that he is on his own, Steve is learning that winning isn't as easy as I make it look. Steve had very little to do with our historic victory, which was delivered by the forgotten men and women of this country. Yet Steve had everything to do with the loss of a Senate seat in Alabama held for more than thirty years by Republicans. Steve doesn't represent my base - he's only in it for himself.
Steve pretends to be at war with the media, which he calls the opposition party, yet he spent his time at the White House leaking false information to the media to make himself seem far more important than he was. It is the only thing he does well. Steve was rarely in a one-on-one meeting with me and only pretends to have had influence to fool a few people with no access and no clue, whom he helped write phony books.
We have many great Republican members of Congress and candidates who are very supportive of the Make America Great Again agenda. Like me, they love the United States of America and are helping to finally take our country back and build it up, rather than simply seeking to burn it all down."
That's right; the President of the United States of America has no qualms about throwing his former aide, whom he once called "a good man," completely under the bus. While "he lost his mind" might not be the worst insult Trump has thrown at a former friend, it can definitely be seen as the first shot in what will almost certainly be a far more public and aggressive war between the two men. And now, of course, it's up to Bannon to decide what happens next - and you can bet we'll have a bucket of popcorn at the ready as this drama continues to unfold.
Giphy's Top 25 GIFs of 2017
When it comes to GIFs, there is no more definitive source than Giphy. It's for that very reason that it's one of my most-visited websites, and for many, it's the definitive source for finding the perfect image to say what words just couldn't possibly express. It should come as no surprise, then, that 300 million web users share over two billion GIFs every single day - and those numbers say a whole hell of a lot about the emotional state of the world at any given time.
This year, Giphy added a much-needed view counter, which allowed the platform to display just how viral a GIF had truly gone - and, of course, to pull together the most-viewed GIFs of the year for one hell of a yearly wrap-up. Ahead, check out our countdown of the top 25 GIFs on the Giphy platform in 2017. From Nicole Kidman clapping to that white guy blinking, it's all here, and it's the best way to look back at the year that was 2017.
29 GIFs That Perfectly Describe Our Feelings About January's Epic Bomb Cyclone
The so-called "bomb cyclone" has arrived, dumping oodles of snow and bringing extremely heavy winds to cities up and down the East Coast. The good news? Many people got to enjoy the frigid weather from the comfort of their living room couches, thanks to widespread school closures and the glorious thing that is working from home.
But, as with any weather event, the internet had a lot of feelings about what went down on Jan. 4. So, we've teamed up with the good people at GIPHY to get a sense of what exactly it is that people have been sharing – and the resulting 29 GIFs, all of which went wild during the crux of the storm, can be found ahead in all their glory. Oh, and it should probably be noted that these GIFs extend well beyond the current "bomb cyclone" event – so if you're anything like us, you'll be bookmarking every single one of these to use over the weeks and months to come.

Augmented reality – or AR, as it's more commonly known – is one of those things that lots of people talk about, but very few actually understand.
