Camila Cabello Finally Responds to Fifth Harmony's "Petty" VMAs Performance
Camila Cabello left Fifth Harmony at the end of 2016, and the drama surrounding the split still hasn't stopped, even though it's been over a year. There was the back and forth between Camila and the remaining members - Lauren Jauregui, Dinah Jane Hansen, Ally Brooke Hernandez, and Normani Kordei - about how they found out she was leaving and then Fifth Harmony took the stage at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards and made their stance very clear. The performance started off with five people before the fifth "fell" off the stage and the rest started singing and dancing. After it happened, Camila kept quiet, but she's finally speaking out about it.
"It definitely hurt my feelings," she told The New York Times while holding back tears. "I wasn't expecting it, I wasn't prepared for it - especially because at that point I'd moved on from it. I was just like, 'What? Why?' I have to make space for the good stuff to happen in my life. I don't like holding onto the past, especially when it's stuff that, in my opinion, is just petty." Camila, who just released her self-titled album after changing the name from The Hurting, the Healing, the Loving, added that she is currently focused on her music and leaving all the drama behind. "I feel like the best way to come up with something new and different is just to be the you-est you possible," she said. "If you pull from all the different little parts of yourself, nobody can replicate that."

Everything You Need to Know About Queen Letizia of Spain's Incredible Wedding Gown
Queen Letizia of Spain walked down the aisle of the Cathedral Santa María la Real de la Almudena in Madrid to marry King Felipe VI 13 years ago, and we still can't get her dress out of our heads. The long-sleeved gown was so intricate; we're probably still trying to process every detail.
The designer behind the queen's impressive dress was couturier Manuel Pertegaz, who embroidered the structured open collar, cuffs, and hem of Letizia's ivory dress with real gold and a floral pattern. But the real gold wasn't even the best part - file that under things we never thought we would write - it was all about the 14-foot train (which, for the record, also featured gold) and the lace veil laid over her updo, delicate diamond tiara, and dress. The stylish royal, who constantly shocks us with her fashion choices, paired the unbelievable and certainly princess-worthy dress with delicate diamond drop earrings and pointy heels. Keep reading to see more photos of the memorable royal wedding.

Here's What Happened After I Ran a 5K Every Morning For a Week
Summer in New York City can be downright rough. As if staring at your electric bill isn't depressing enough on its own (thank you, air conditioner), working out in the muggy afternoons is much less than ideal. Only a few weeks into the season, I noticed a pretty crappy byproduct of the season: my fitness routine was slipping. Warm mornings had made it tough to leave the comfort of my cool bedroom for a sunrise run. As someone who swears by early a.m. workouts, I saw my productivity slipping by the wayside as my lazy mornings became more frequent. Despite managing to get to midday Spin classes or even the occasional hot yoga situation, I still felt blob-ish.
I knew I needed to get my mojo back. So, I decided to commit to running every morning for a week. The rules: Hit a 5K first thing (after, of course, the whole wash my face, brush my teeth, put clothing on schtick). The pace didn't matter. All that mattered was that I would get up, get out, log the miles, and well, the rest of the day was mine to conquer.
A quick note on me and my running capabilities: I've run five marathons (I've also lost 70 pounds in the process). The last one was almost a year ago. Still, these daily 5Ks didn't come easy to me. There were days I hated it, and there were days I loved it. Days five and six, the temperatures were perfection - 60 degrees, sunny, and low humidity - making me fall in love with this city all over again with each step. Throughout the week, here are the four biggest lessons I learned running a 5K every morning for a week:
1. Preparation is everything.
Getting out the door at an early hour is a whole lot easier if you set yourself up for success. Before bed each night, I'd set aside a pair of shorts or tights, a sports bra, and a tank. Knowing exactly what I was going to put on gave me one less excuse to procrastinate before walking down the four flights of stairs from my apartment to the street. Plus, have you seen what happens when you try to put together a matching outfit pre-6 a.m.? No wonder why most New Yorkers only wear black.
2. The earlier, the better.
I despise humidity like I despised sophomore year statistics class in college. While sleep is amazing, there's no denying that beating the heat is 100-percent worth setting that alarm for an hour earlier. Maybe I'm just super sensitive, but I found that leaving after 6:30 meant it was harder for me to breathe. By setting a 5:45 a.m. alarm, I was able to get up, dressed, and my act together before hitting my stride by 6:10 a.m. This, for me, was ideal.
3. Partnering up can save your stride.
On day one of my 5Ks, I joined my boyfriend for a 10K. (He's an overachiever and after a glutenous date night, I felt like the jump-start could do me good.) I'll be the first to admit that I was in the front seat on the struggle bus. Last month, the man spontaneously decided to run 20 miles because "he was feeling great." So just envision this scene with me: it's mile two of our run, he's cruising along like a gazelle, and I stare in his general direction using puppy eyes asking him if we can take a pitstop so I can assault a water fountain.
Still, without him being there to push me past my comfort zone, I doubt I would have finished the miles that day. I became competitive, not just with him, but with myself. You've run marathons, I thought to myself. You can run a 10K. Although I didn't get to that desirable happy place on my run where you blink and suddenly it's done, I did check the box. After I felt appreciative to have had him to get me through. I also felt appreciative when he made coffee upon returning to the apartment.
4. When something becomes habit, it's easier to stick with.
When I started running back in 2007, I committed to logging the same distance every day, rain or shine. I didn't love those give-or-take 14-minute pavement dates, but after two Summer months of running daily, it had become routine. I started to look forward to taking that time for myself. Regardless of the snail-worthy pace, I felt like I had finally done something for myself. I felt accomplished.
This week of 5K running brought me back to that time. I found that by day eight (yes, I know that there are seven days in a week), I was still waking up to run 3.1 miles before going on with my day. Yes, I kept it going even AFTER I was "done." It took me one week to make this 5K morning situation habit. One week a 5Ks to find some inner peace and jump-start my fitness back to where I'm happiest. Maybe for you, it's not running. But perhaps you too can be surprised at what you're capable of when you set your mind to a goal - and execute.

The Perfect Nap Length (and Why You Need a Nap Daily)
Let's face it: napping is awesome! Anyone who tells you otherwise is simply not someone you need in your life. Napping, however, you most definitely do need in your life. You love it, we love it, and there are many scientific reasons why your body needs it, too! But not all naps are equal. Are you the long napper? Do you take little catnaps? Do you wake up feeling more tired than when you fell asleep? Are your naps planned or are you the spontaneous snoozer? Here's your guide to why you need to nap and the best scenario for the most restful nap of your life.
Why You Need to Nap
How much sleep do you get at night? A CDC study found that more than 40 million workers get fewer than six hours a night, in spite of a National Sleep Foundation report that indicates that we all need between seven and nine hours a night. Needless to say, coming up that light on your sleep needs makes naps a necessity to just catch up on rest and be able to get through all the tasks we have on our schedules on a daily basis. If you reach for sugar in the afternoon to stave off the Zs, then you're also a person who could use a nap - and better nutrition!
Science Says You Should Nap
A recent study published in the Journal of Sleep Research found that very short naps improve cognitive alertness and mental capacity. These could be as short as a few minutes or up to 10 minutes of solid shut-eye. Researchers at Clinical Neurophysiology found that a 20-minute nap in the midafternoon could mean the difference between you being at your best for the remainder of the day or not. Another study published by Psychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences echoed the same findings about the 20-minute power nap. Yet another study done at Berkeley discovered that getting a solid hour of quality sleep exponentially increases and improves brain function. That makes you a better student, worker, or just a better person in general with an amazing short-term memory to boot!
How Long Should You Nap?
It's obvious there are benefits to napping, but how long should you really be dozing for? The above listed research indicates the benefit of short naps from minutes to an hour, but how long is the best nap? Research published in The Archives of Internal Medicine studied more than 20,000 Greek men and women between ages 20 and 86 and found that the best napping length was 30 minutes. Not convinced? Study participants found that people who took at least three naps of this length per week had a more than 30 percent lowered risk of death via coronary episodes, especially women!

3 Things to Help You Have a Tighter and More Toned Tummy
If you're constantly doing crunches to get a six-pack, you may be going about things the wrong way. Along with fat-burning cardio, the best way to lose belly fat is through these three diet changes.
Eat These
Proven to reduce abdominal fat, MUFAs (monounsaturated fatty acids) should be a part of your daily diet, and you can find them in avocado, nuts and nut butters, seeds, and olive oil. Just be mindful of how much you eat since these are also high in calories. Blueberries are also proven to diminish belly fat, so make a point to throw them in your salads and smoothies. Some foods like pineapple contain an enzyme that helps ease digestion and banish bloat, making your belly look and feel flatter. High-fiber foods like pears, berries, veggies, beans, and whole grains have the same effect - plus they keep you feeling full longer, just like healthy fats. Feeling full keeps hunger at bay, so you crave less and eat less, reducing your total daily calorie intake which will reduce your overall body fat, including that extra bit around your middle.
Ditch These
Trans fat is a big no-no for your health in general, but also for your belly. It's found in many processed foods like granola bars, crackers, cookies, some peanut butter, and breads. If the list of ingredients includes partially hydrogenated oil, put it back on the shelf. Avoid processed foods, soda, and meats that are high in saturated fat. Try to limit sugar, simple carbs like bagels, and alcohol since these won't fill you up, so you'll end up eating extra calories you don't need. Also, steer clear of foods that personally cause you bloating like dairy products, sweeteners, or bread.
The Trifecta
You don't need to give up carbs and go all crazy with a protein-only diet. Instead, CrossFit competitor Christmas Abbott told us to embrace the macronutrient trifecta of proteins, complex carbs, and healthy fats to help reduce overall body fat, which will aid in reducing stubborn belly fat. Including all three in your meals will make you feel more satisfied so you end up consuming smaller portions. Plus, you'll feel fuller longer which helps you consume fewer total calories.

5 Simple Ways to Stay Mentally Healthy When You Can't Exercise
As a personal trainer and Pilates instructor, I work with a very active population. When one of my clients gets injured, it doesn't just take a toll physically, but also mentally. I offer these tips on how to manage your daily stress as you're recovering and healing your body to everyone.
Stay in Control
Focus on what you can control when it comes to your health. Even though you may not be able to "exercise" or even move very much with your injury, you can control what you eat, what you drink, and your attitude toward health. If you focus on fueling your body with the right foods, your blood sugar and mood will stay more even-keeled and you'll feel a lot better emotionally and physically.
Start Something New
Take this as an opportunity to spend time on a new project that does not involve something physical. Maybe you have always wanted to refresh your Spanish, read the Harry Potter series, or start a journal, but it didn't seem feasible. Your body needs to rest, but your mind should stay active. Create a goal and follow through and a sense of accomplishment will help keep you strong mentally.
Adjust Your Workout
Depending on your injury, you may still have an opportunity to perform some movements. I've had clients with knee injuries who completely stopped moving, gained weight, and were miserable. I've also had clients who took the opportunity to work on other parts of their bodies while continuing to rest their knee and were able to make progress physically and keep the pounds off. Look at what your options are and determine the best course of action.
Track Your Progress in a Notebook
When you're hurt and restricted, it feels like you're never going to get better. I have worked with stroke patients who were unable to see the small improvements in their mobility that as an outsider I was viewing. When I was able to remind them of things they couldn't do even two weeks prior, their attitudes toward their physical limitations were completely transformed. By making daily notes about how you feel, your pain level, and your mobility, you will be able to track progress and see real results that you may have been blind to otherwise. Celebrate the little victories!
Meditate
Although it might not be for everyone, there are many ways to meditate. Deep breathing can be helpful for reducing heart rate and stress and provides mental clarity. Come up with a daily saying that works for you and repeat it to yourself as you're recovering and rebooting!

Her hair, which was swept back and let her envy-worthy cheekbones shine through, was styled by Dove celebrity stylist Mark Townsend. The Wonder Woman actress's locks fell at the nape of her neck, evoking old-school glamour from the front and modern style in the back.

Alison Brie Looked Exactly Like Princess Belle at the Critics' Choice Awards
Breaking: Alison Brie is a Disney princess. Need proof? Well, be our guest and prepare to ooze over the fact that Alison showed up to the Critics' Choice Awards looking like Princess Belle herself. The GLOW star and nominee for best actress in a comedy series looked like she was on her way to audition for a Beauty and the Beast sequel. First, her monochromatic yellow eye shadow and tan lipstick all fell under Belle's favorite color scheme. Plus, her softly curled, shoulder-length lob even featured the princess's signature stray bang.
Alison's makeup was done by Quinn Murphy, who first swept Nars Eye Paint in Baalbek ($26) all over her lids. Then, Quinn used a combination of Charlotte Tilbury Brow Lift in Super Model ($30) and Charlotte Tilbury Rock 'N' Kohl Liner in Barbarella Brown ($20) on her lash lines to make her princess peepers pop. He also brightened her cheeks with L'Occitane Immortelle Divine Youth Oil ($98).
The lipstick in question was a combination of Nars Satin Lip Pencil in Hyde Park ($27) used as a matte base and Charlotte Tilbury Lip Lustre in Blondie ($22) swept on for a glossy topcoat.
Alison looking flawless on the red carpet may be a tale as old as time, but we're excited to see her update her look with a little help from Belle!
Kate Bosworth Looks as Perfect as a Porcelain Doll on the Red Carpet
Kate Bosworth's fair complexion looked so flawless on the Critics' Choice Awards red carpet that you might have mistaken her for a porcelain doll. The actress rocked a stunning monochromatic-red makeup look and her hair gathered in a braided bun, letting her alabaster skin be the center of attention.
Ordinarily, red blush and eye shadow wouldn't be an obvious pairing with a bold red lip, but Kate's makeup artist, Hung Vanngo, proved that it can be done right. The red hue made the actress look naturally flushed, and the shimmery finish of the eye shadow added dimension to the look and made her crystal-blue eyes pop.
Read on to see how to wear monochromatic makeup.
Margot Robbie's Hair Is Meant to Be Seen From All Angles - Especially the Back!
Margot Robbie must have taken a page from her role in I, Tonya for her hair at the Critics' Choice Awards. The 27-year-old decided to give a chic twist to a classic top knot with a black velvet ribbon. The ribbon matched her Chanel striped dress perfectly, and the length added drama - there was no missing her chic accessory.
"The whole look was inspired by the fact that Margot was wearing Chanel and for hair and makeup we were trying to emulate a classic Chanel aesthetic," Margot's hair stylist Bryce Scarlett for TRESemmé said in a press release. We also can't get over the fact that instead of wearing it in the middle, she is rocking it slightly to the right so the ribbon is center stage. Savor Margot's fabulous hair from all angles ahead.
Emma Roberts Is Rocking Ridiculously Chic Bangs at the Critics' Choice Awards
Emma Roberts stepped out at the Critics' Choice Awards with a whole new 'do. The blonde actress is rocking bluntly cut bangs to complement her above-the-shoulder bob, and she looked chic as always on the red carpet. While it's unclear whether or not the American Horror Story star got a real haircut or if the bangs are fake (you can see her darker hairline peeking through), one thing's for sure: Emma can definitely pull off this look. Keep reading to get a closer look at Emma as she accompanied boyfriend Evan Peters for his nomination for American Horror Story: Cult, and then check out all the stunning beauty looks at this year's Critics' Choice Awards.
Sarah Hyland's Ballerina Bun Is Full of Hidden Surprises
No, the above photo is not of an Audrey Hepburn hologram walking the blue carpet at the 2018 Critics' Choice Awards - it's Sarah Hyland serving up major Audrey vibes with her ballerina bun and ruby red lipstick. The Modern Family star showed up to the event wearing a very Roman Holiday-esque look, but zoom in and you'll see a modern edge to this retro beauty look.
Hairstylist Ryan Richman styled Sarah's bun with ample texture, utilizing not one but two fishtail braids. He began by working Suave Professionals Natural Volume Mousse ($4) into Sarah's damp hair, starting at the ends. He then added the product upward before blow-drying the hair into a smooth side part.
After pulling the hair into a low pony, Ryan split it into two sections and fishtail braided both. He finished that step off by spritzing with Suave Professionals Natural Hold Micro Mist Hairspray ($4).
Finally, he wrapped both braids into a low, slightly asymmetric bun. And there you have it: Old Hollywood glamour in the front, 2018 party in the back.
Should You Put Coconut Water in Your Hair? Here's the Lowdown
There are countless beauty hacks on the internet - some good and some terrible - but when we spotted the idea of dousing your hair in pure coconut water, this hack made total sense. After all, coconuts are filled with a ton of moisture-boosting benefits. This is likely the reason there are already a ton of hair products infused with coconut water. Sure, you can just use those, but the idea here is to reap the benefits of this moisturizer in its purest form. Logistically, it could be tricky. Who's really up for buying a substantial-enough supply of bottled coconut water to rinse your hair on the regular? Before sorting through those details, here's what you should know about whether or not it's actually worth the hassle.
What are the benefits?
There are pretty much only a handful of ingredients that top the list of moisture must haves, and coconut is certainly one of them. Coconut oil has already secured a spot as the holy grail of hair moisturizers, particularly in the natural hair community, but coconut water, on the other hand, is somewhat uncharted territory. Bridget Brager, Herbal Essences celebrity stylist, said that there isn't a single person who wouldn't benefit from using coconut water as a hair treatment. "Coconut water helps to nourish and condition the hair because it's rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants," she said. Cosmetic chemist Ni'Kita Wilson also explained that the contents of coconut water include sugars and amino acids which can help hair strands maintain moisture.
Will any coconut water do?
"Depending on the age of the coconut, the water can have more sugars or more protein," Wilson explained. Younger coconuts (the green ones) contain more sugars, while the proteins in the water from more mature coconuts (the brown, furry-looking ones) can help strengthen hair strands temporarily.
Is it safe?
Yes, it's safe, but there is a slight risk of going overboard on protein with water from more mature coconuts.
How should you use it?
Try it as a treatment first once a week, when you feel like you need a moisture boost. Wilson says that your frequency of use should be determined by the age of the fruit. "Young green coconut water can be used more frequently because it contains more sugars. Mature fruit water has a higher protein concentration, so I would use it sparingly first to see how your hair responds to it," she added. There is a slight risk of packing on too much protein and potentially damaging your hair. "If your hair doesn't get dry and brittle, then you can use it more frequently," Wilson notes. The tricky part is that unless you're cracking open coconuts straight from a tree, there's no real way to know if what you're buying in a bottle is young or mature. So test it out first to see how your hair adapts. Try it after shampooing as a rinse or in a spray bottle on already damp hair as a leave-in conditioner. There's no need to dilute it, and although the younger fruit contains more sugars, it won't leave a sticky residue on your strands. It should soak right in.
Saoirse Ronan Just Wore the Black-Red Valentine's Day Makeup of Your Goth Dreams
When it comes to red carpet appearances, Saoirse Ronan usually opts for the "less is more" school of thought. In fact, just a few days before the Critics' Choice Awards, Saoirse showed up at the Golden Globes in minimalist coral lipstick and a simple, slicked-back bun. But on Jan. 11, Saoirse lit up the blue carpet with bold hair and makeup we've truly never seen her wear before. The Lady Bird star and best actress nominee showed up looking like a '90s goth princess in black-red lipstick.
Saoirse played her pinot lipstick off of a cranberry smoky eye that was so faint, you might have to zoom in to see it. But we do urge you to take the time, because we promise the subtle monochromatic look is one you'll want to re-create for Valentine's Day. We love how Saoirse contrasted her moody makeup with platinum hair styled in a soft, romantic blowout. She's clearly got this whole sugar-and-spice thing down.

This Husband's Hysterical Account of Shopping at Ikea With His Wife Is Every Couple
Ikea can make or break a relationship. How a couple navigates the never-ending aisles, furniture decisions, and assembling instructions at home can have a lasting impact. And yet, it can be almost impossible for couples not to get sucked in at least once.
When Nathanael Showalter found himself being dragged to the massive store, he didn't suck it up for the meatballs or spend the afternoon complaining about the spotty cellphone reception. Instead, he decided to document what shopping with his wife - when they didn't actually need anything - was really like.
His hysterical play-by-play of the outing is going viral because everyone who has ever been tortured by their partner and an insanely long trip to Ikea can relate to it. He starts off by making the purpose of their recent visit clear: "We are here. Our apartment is furnished. I am not sure why we are returning," he shared on Imgur.
He continues to share in perfect detail exactly what a day of browsing at Ikea is like according to a husband who doesn't particularly want to be there. "Perhaps we are here for institutional storage solutions. My wife says, 'Maybe when we have eight kids.' We have zero kids. We move on," he captioned a photo of a storage unit. "She has commented on how sturdy these spoons are. Our other measuring spoons do not strike me as structurally unsound."
Although they ended their day by walking out on a much stronger note than many couples who fall victim to the showroom bickering and box-hauling stress, every person who has ever stepped into Ikea will crack up over the rest of this guy's spot-on commentary.

According to Emojipedia, the upside-down face emoji is meant to show "silliness or goofiness." It also says it's an "ambiguous emotion," with people using it in a joking or sarcastic manner. Basically, everyone uses it so differently and it's not simply a smiley face turned upside down.
Ahead, see all the ways we break down using this emoji.

The History (and Mystery) Behind Disney World's Abandoned Discovery Island
From the beach at Walt Disney World Resort's Wilderness Lodge, guests can look out over Bay Lake and spy something a bit mysterious. Discovery Island, now abandoned, was once a part of the resort and now lies empty despite its proximity to the park. So what's the history of the island, and why did it fall into disrepair?
Before it became a part of Disney's theme park, the island had an interesting history. According to Abandoned Florida, a family once owned the island and used the land for farming until the 1930s. A man named Delmar "Radio Nick" Nicholson then bought the land for $800 and renamed it Isles Bay Island. "He lived on the island with his wife and pet crane for 20 years before selling the property, which would be used as a hunting retreat and again renamed Riles Island," says Abandoned Florida. "The property was finally purchased by Disney in 1965."
In the 1960s, when Walt Disney was in the process of acquiring land for what would eventually be Walt Disney World in Florida, he noticed the secluded island. Disney knew he wanted this to be part of the Disney World puzzle, so he purchased it. This piece of secluded land would undergo many changes over the years, the first of which came in the beginning stages. It was originally slated to be called "Blackbeard's Island" with a full-on pirate theme, but this exact vision never truly came to be.
It wasn't until 1974, eight years after Walt Disney died, that the island was finally opened up to the public under the name Treasure Island, after the Robert Louis Stevenson book and film. It featured exotic birds, lagoons, beaches, vegetation, animal demonstrations and attractions, and more. Guests could access the island from a Disney World resort dock or, even more exciting, take a cruise that gave them a tour of the Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake with a pit stop at Treasure Island.
Treasure Island was renamed Discovery Island in 1978, ditching the pirate theme and embracing the focus on nature and the animal life that the island boasted. Despite the name change, the island remained intact, with occasional upgrades for another 20-plus years. In 1998, Disney World's Animal Kingdom opened and a new era of the park began. Animal Kingdom sought to bring in more patrons with new animals, demonstrations, and other attractions. Many of the animals living on Discovery Island were relocated to the new Animal Kingdom while others found new homes at various zoos across the US.
In 1999, Discovery Island closed, though speculation still remains today about what actually caused the island attraction to shut down. In the last 20 years since the official closing, there have been rumors about what Disney planned to do with the land - word was that at one point, honeymoon cottages might go there, or that it would become an interactive island based off of a video game (um, cool!), but nothing ever came of these.
Today, the land is undeveloped and closed to the public. In 2009, photographer Shane Perez visited the island and published photos of the attraction's eerie remains. While the island remains empty, it still manages to capture the imaginations of fans who ponder about its potential.
Feng Shui Bedroom Tips to Improve Your Sex Life
The ancient Chinese art and science of feng shui helps us understand our environment and live in harmony with it. For thousands of years, people have observed patterns in nature and how these patterns affect us. Now, in time for Valentine's Day, use these traditional feng shui principles to make your bedroom a haven of rest, intimacy, and connection for you and your partner.
1. Let the Chi Flow
Energy flows through a room like water in a stream - swiftly through the deepest channels, more slowly along the bank, and not at all in that pile of junk in the corner. Plan your room's layout with the eye of a feng shui practitioner: eliminate stagnant areas like half-completed projects or piles of unfolded laundry, make sure closets aren't overcrowded, and keep the passageways around your room easy to navigate and free from clutter to let the chi flow.
2. Design For the Five Senses
Your bedroom is your shelter from the storm. Delight the five senses by filling it with anything soft, sensuous, or soothing: soft rugs for your cold feet, a luxurious faux fur throw, fluffy down pillows and duvets, scents from essential oils, a luxe velvet robe, the softest silk negligee, a cluster of candles or a low wattage lamp, and a record player with an old record collection waiting nearby.
3. Watch Out For Sha Chi
Sha Chi is anything unpleasant that brings negative energy: a smelly pile of dirty laundry, harsh overhead lighting, clutter, dirt, or unclean bed linens. Charge your phone or tablet elsewhere to eliminate unwanted magnetic radiation, and wake up to a soundless (no tick tock!) clock with a gradual alarm like this one. Rid your room of anything dangerous, such as a rickety ceiling fan or a shelf with heavy objects mounted over your head.
4. Balance the Masculine and Feminine
Make sure the yin and the yang are represented in equal measure. This doesn't mean that your room has to look like a sterile hotel room; the goal is to make it welcoming to both genders. Balance a floral quilt with a leather trunk at the foot of the bed, or pair a pile of embroidered pillows with a Pendleton wool throw across the bottom of the bed.
5. Bed Placement Is Key
Where you place your bed is very important in feng shui. Choose the wrong wall and you risk a long string of restless nights. The path from your bedroom door to the window has the strongest flow of energy; keep your bed out of this path if possible. Positioning your bed in front of a window is a big feng shui no-no. Ideally you should have a solid headboard or wall behind your bed (no diagonal placement either), a small table or chair on either side for support, and a low bench or a trunk at the foot of the bed.
6. Consider the Neighbors
If you share a house with roommates or little ones, a lock on the door is critical for making your room a love nest! Your bedroom is the place where you want to feel most secure and relaxed. The last thing you want is to be constantly worried about a surprise visit. Sound dampening creates a more intimate space as well; items such as an upholstered headboard, curtains, and rugs all contribute to a feeling of privacy and seclusion.
7. Choosing Your Colors
Rather than prescribe a set color palette for the bedroom, traditional feng shui emphasizes the pursuit of balance. If your bedroom is a sunny beachside retreat, then crisp starched linens and light blue accents will feel cool and refreshing in contrast. If, on the other hand, your bedroom is in a snowy mountaintop lodge, accents of warm reds, dark woods, and golden lamplight will provide much needed warmth.
8. Avoid the Bedroom Office
A bedroom is no place for an office. A creative corner, maybe, but a technology-filled, deadline-driven, endless to-do list office? A constant reminder of your unread inbox does not cultivate rest or intimacy. Consider a mobile office that partners a laptop with your dining room table (and attractive storage for all your supplies) before you resort to a bedroom office.
