After Being Pardoned by Trump, Former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio Announces Senate Run
Mere months after former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio was pardoned of criminal contempt charges by President Donald Trump, on Jan. 9 he announced his candidacy for the US Senate. Arpaio, who was convicted of criminal contempt after ignoring a judge's order not to detain suspected undocumented immigrants, was the sheriff of Maricopa County, which includes the state's capital, Phoenix, for five terms, or 24 years. His tenure was widely reported on due to extreme policies, numerous lawsuits, and outrageous anti-immigrant rhetoric. Arpaio's criminal conviction came six months after he lost his seat to a Democratic challenger in 2016, and after Trump's pardon, he managed to emerge from the situation unscathed.
It should come as no surprise, then, that the longtime Trump supporter immediately honed in on the president's voting base. "I am running for the U.S. Senate from the Great State of Arizona for one unwavering reason: to support the agenda and policies of President Donald Trump in his mission to Make America Great Again," Arpaio announced on Twitter.

It's worth noting that Arpaio is by no means a shoo-in for the race; ultimately, he'll go head to head with Steve Bannon-backed former state Senator Kelli Ward and, if rumors prove true, Arizona Rep. Martha McSally. But it's pretty safe to say at this stage that the race to fill Jeff Flake's Arizona Senate seat is going to be one hell of a dog and pony show and we'll be keeping a close eye on this story as it develops.
The Reason I Finally Gave My Kids a Toy Limit
It's only been a few weeks since Christmas, and my house is being overtaken by toys - toys still in their boxes, rogue toy parts sprawled over my floors, and toys overflowing from the bins and baskets that seemed ample just a month ago. And this cluttered, overloaded state, my fellow moms, is exactly why I gave my kids a toy limit this holiday season.
Sometime in early December, I decided that three gifts (all toys because, let's face it, it's not really a gift to a kid unless they can play with it) was the perfect number of presents my kids should receive. I was so self-satisfied with the decision, thinking that I'd happened upon a magic formula that would both keep them Santa-satisfied and please my constant need for a tidy home not littered with tiny, sharp toy parts just waiting for someone to step on with a vulnerable bare foot.
It took every ounce of self-control not to let out the "Are you f*cking kidding me?!" that felt like the only reasonable response.
In the end, however, I realized that the exact right number of toys to give my kids should have been zero. It's not that they were particularly naughty this year; it's just that my plan didn't take into account the dozens of gifts they'd be receiving from my in-laws, my parents, their aunts and uncles, their teachers, and their favorite babysitter. Those gifts? They had already stolen my/Santa's thunder.
The WowWee Fingerlings I ordered for both of my kids in October from a third-party seller on Amazon that never showed up (I'm guessing the seller realized she could offload them for more than $15 somewhere else) that I then repurchased on eBay for $25 each? My kids got one from their uncle long before Santa's sleigh was ever loaded. Needless to say, my smile at their excitement was more of a grimace.
And the $70 L.O.L. Surprise! Big Surprise I was so thrilled to score when I happened to catch an Amazon restock? I didn't realize my mother-in-law had purchased one an intrepid salesperson at her local Toys"R"Us found hiding out on the wrong shelf. When my daughter opened it on Dec. 18 at our family's gift exchange, I figured she'd probably be excited to have two because the whole point of L.O.L Surprise! dolls is you never know what you're going to get, right?
"You know, honey, you asked Santa for that, too, so you might get to unwrap 50 different surprises!" I said, setting her up not to be disappointed. "No, Mom, all the big ones have the same things in them," she corrected me, citing the many YouTube videos she'd watched about them. It took every ounce of self-control in my holiday-overloaded body not to let out the "Are you f*cking kidding me?!" that felt like the only reasonable response.
The Hatchimal Surprises I got both of my kids were also a disappointment, quickly abandoned after they emerged from their eggs, bringing my grand total of wasted Christmas toy money to somewhere around $250. The only toy that landed was the Imaginext Eagle Talon Castle I bought my almost-4-year-old son on eBay. At three feet long and accompanied by a huge ogre, dragon, and countless tiny knights, animals, and accessories, it has now become the major decorative element of my family room.
Next year I think I'll get my kids stocks and bonds. They'll probably be cheaper, and I won't have to worry about stepping on them for the rest of the year. I've learned my lesson: the toys can come from everyone else.
5 Nonnegotiable Rules For Hand-Me-Downs
One of the great things about having friends, family, or neighbors with children is the almost endless possibilities for hand-me-downs. Kids grow so quickly in the first few years of their lives; one moment they fit perfectly into that Winter coat, and the next it's like a tube top. But because they grow so quickly and their clothes and toys are usually only slightly worn, it seems unreasonable to just get rid of them or to keep buying them brand new items every few months. While hand-me-downs are a great way to save money and to make use out of things that still have a lot of potential, there are some steadfast rules you should always follow, whether you're the giver or the receiver.
- Check Product Recalls. The last thing you want to do is give away or receive a product that's been recalled by the manufacturer. Whether it's clothing, furniture, toys, or other items, always be sure to check that the specific product you're giving or receiving is still safe to use. This is especially important for items like furniture, car seats, and other pieces that could put your child or someone else's child in danger if they're defective.
- Make Sure They're Extremely Clean. Whether or not you realize it, giving away your child's worn clothes or used toys without washing them could spread dangerous germs, allergens, and more. And if you're the one on the receiving end of the used items, make sure you wash them, launder them, and give them a good once-over to make sure they're really clean. It's not just a matter of sanitation, either - these kinds of items could even spread pests like bedbugs, which no one wants.
- Make Sure They're in Good Condition. A beloved toy or a well-worn item of clothing may have brought you and your child lots of joy, but consider whether the item has come to the end of its life and should be discarded of in a different way. Check toys to make sure they're not broken, and make sure clothing and shoes are only lightly worn. Items with holes in them or that are missing essential pieces are not necessarily going to be useful for another child.
- Don't Give Away Your Trash. Has your child stopped using a toy because it's missing pieces or because something is broken, causing it not to work anymore? Items like this belong in the trash and shouldn't be given away to unsuspecting friends, neighbors, or family members. Also a big no-no? Don't try to hide things you're too busy to throw away in a box of otherwise good items. No one wants to be disappointed to find out that half of the things you've given them are just junk.
- Be Clear About Sizing. Always be clear about sizing with the person you're handing off your worn items to. If you tell them that you have a collection of pieces in a certain size, don't throw in a bunch of other clothing in different sizes with it. Be respectful that the person receiving the hand-me-downs still has specific needs for their children and might not want every single piece of clothing you want to get rid of.
I Survived Breastfeeding My Preemie in the NICU
An entire month before my due date, I found myself being rushed to the hospital. My baby-to-be had reached a stagnant weight and was no longer growing, and she would need to be admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit right after I gave birth. To say I was an emotional train wreck is a serious understatement.
I quickly learned that having a premature baby in the NICU meant that I couldn't do a lot of things. I couldn't hold my daughter, cuddle her, or soothe her in my arms. I couldn't get alone time with her or share those special bonding moments new moms dream about. Since her lungs weren't fully developed, she needed to remain on oxygen until they became stable enough for her to breathe on her own. The doctors didn't know when that would be, so they informed me she would need a feeding tube until further notice. It also meant she would be staying in the NICU for an indefinite period of time.
One of those nurses even told me I should just stop trying altogether, which made me want to succeed even more.
I felt like breastfeeding her was all I had left to cling to. That was the end goal I became focused on. Until I could actually breastfeed her, though, I had to pump. A lot. Every hour that wasn't spent in the car driving to and from the hospital to visit her, I was pumping. This might seem a little excessive (trust me - it felt that way, too), but it was the only way to establish my milk supply and make it last since my daughter couldn't actually breastfeed on her own yet. I was awake all the time, and barely sane.
Between these never-ending pumping sessions were the best parts of my days. I would wash up, put on my latex gloves and scrubs (something all visitors have to do to reduce the germs that pass through the NICU), and go visit Grace. I always did the same thing, which was pull up a chair next to her isolette - basically a small, glass incubator - and read her books, sing her songs, or reach through the armholes just to hold her tiny, precious hand. She made all the trouble of pumping and everything else worth it. It was on day five of her NICU stay that I was told her feeding and oxygen tubes would finally be removed. To celebrate, the nurse gave me the OK to hold her for the very first time since she was born. We stayed that way for hours, until the lactation consultant from the hospital showed up in all of her angelic glory.
The moment I was waiting for was here: we would finally get to breastfeed! As much as Grace tried, though, she was still so weak and fragile. Every time she would finally start to latch on to my nipple and start sucking, she would either fall asleep or lose control and fall off - not to mention the cords and IVs I had to navigate around every time I had contact with her. I'll admit, being on the hormonal rollercoaster ride that happens postpregnancy got the better of me for a little bit. I felt like I had failed her, and almost every part of me wanted to give up. But I couldn't . . . I wouldn't. I loved her too much to just throw in the towel that easily. And while I had absolutely no problem formula-feeding or even pumping and feeding her through a bottle, I wasn't ready to let go of my breastfeeding journey just yet.
Grace and I worked with that angelic lactation consultant every day. It wasn't always easy, especially when a few of the nurses got annoyed that I would be keeping Grace out of her isolette for so long to try to breastfeed. I would quietly listen on as the lactation consultant stressed the importance of skin-to-skin contact and the benefits of breastfeeding to the nurses, who would then voice their concerns that preemies aren't supposed to be exposed to the outside world and germs often. One of those nurses even told me I should just stop trying altogether, which made me want to succeed even more. Regardless of anyone's opinion, it really felt like Grace and I were a team. If she could latch on and remain awake, I was happy. If she needed to be bottle-fed with my pumped breast milk that day, I was happy. Most importantly, I felt like even if we just made it that much farther, we could make it through anything.
Our breakthrough came on the second-to-last day of Grace's 10-day NICU stay. She had been moved up to intensive care and into an open crib. She had lost weight, making her a total of 4 pounds 12 ounces, but she was still healthy and thriving. Her lungs were doing great, and everything was looking up. It all felt too good to be true, but to make it even better, she had finally completed a breastfeeding session, emptying one breast, then the other. Little did I know this would be just one of many. I ended up breastfeeding Grace exclusively until her first birthday, and I enjoyed every single moment of it . . . especially since I knew how hard it was to get there.

You'll find out one day that parenting doesn't come with a map. I've been desperate for my own tour guide several times, but instead I've learned to trust my gut. Because of this, mistakes are made and lessons are learned, and there's one parenting lesson I wish I would have learned earlier.
I never should have compared you to your big brother.
Parents know not to do this, yet sometimes things happen in our subconscious. When you were born, I considered myself a veteran mother. I had done it all before - the blowouts, the middle-of-the-night feedings, and the witching hours. I knew what babies needed and how to console them . . . or so I thought.
But you were stubborn from the beginning. In those first three months when you were growing inside of me, you sent me running to the toilet daily. Then you were five days late. And since your very first breath, you've let the world know you are a force to be reckoned with. You wouldn't comply. You'd do things at your own pace, usually faster or slower than the norm. For you, the rules were only meant to be broken.
Yes, you did some things quicker than your older brother, like climb up the slide, shake your hips while dancing on our kitchen table, and vehemently tell me no. There were also things you did slower than your brother: sleep through the night, walk, and learn your letters. You've proved that you're much more defiant, too. I've had to learn a few parenting tricks to get you to listen to me. And I admit, when you weren't hitting those milestones as early as your big brother did, I compared you to him at first. My gut told me that you were perfect and that you would do things when you were ready, but I let society's judgment creep in. I'm so sorry.
The other day, I was running around the house trying to get you and your brother ready for school, and you ran to me from the mudroom screaming, "I'm all ready, Mommy! Let's go!" There you were. A puny 3-year-old all dressed up for preschool: coat zipped, hat and gloves on, and boots pulled up successfully on the right feet. It hit me. You were born to be a little wild. You were also born to lead and be great - like your brother, only different. You may not get to where you want to go on the first try, but you will get there, and you'll have a lot of fun on the way. I know that now.
I'm glad I learned this lesson while you're still young. I'm embracing the beautiful and unpredictable paths you take to accomplish both the small and large tasks. I'll never compare you to your brother again, because I know that nobody can compare to you.

The Heartbreaking Photos That Capture a Tragic Birth Story
"It was so beautiful and precious. I would do it again, and again, and again," Julie told Ela Wunderli of Itsy Photography, who photographed the birth of her seventh child, Lily, who would die shortly after birth.
In her 36th week of pregnancy, Julie and her family moved from Arizona to California. Having given birth six times before, Julie was an old pro at this pregnancy thing and was having a happy, normal pregnancy. Mixed into her week of unpacking and settling was a doctor's appointment at her new OB/Gyn practice. "At the appointment they wanted to do an ultrasound where they discovered many concerns," she said. "By the next day the doctors told us that our daughter most likely had Trisomy 13 or 18, but they couldn't be sure until after she was born and tested."
Trisomy is the presence of three chromosomes instead of one. The most commonly known trisomy is Trisomy 21, otherwise known as Down syndrome. Trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome) and Trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome) are genetic disorders that include health problems that affect almost every organ of the body. They are fatal diagnoses - more than half of babies affected with the conditions do not survive the first week of life, and survivors do not usually make it past their first birthday.
The room was filled with anticipation during the 20 hours of labor. "Everyone held their breath to see if she would survive the delivery," Ela shared. "She held her breath too! But when the doctors tried to intubate her, she let out a tiny cry and started to breathe on her own. It was a miracle!"
Baby Lily was put on a CPAP (a breathing assistance machine) and rushed to the NICU for monitoring. Later that morning, her siblings arrived to visit her. After receiving hand-washing lessons, they filed into the NICU to welcome their baby sister. Each child had an opportunity to touch her and welcome her in their own way, before moving on to Julie's room to spend some time with mom. Later that day, Julie spent some time with Lily in the NICU, and Ela had the opportunity to capture their moments together.
"I couldn't have been happier to have caught her tiny eyes opening - even if it was only for a split second," Ela shared. "She cried a tiny little cry - and I must say it was like music to hear."
Lily lived for two and a half days. During that time her family showered her with love and threw her first and second birthday parties. She passed away peacefully - tube and wire free - in her mother's arms. Her family wrote her a beautiful obituary:
. . . She spent two-and-a-half celestial days with us. We celebrated her first birthday with lilies, handwritten birthday cards from her brothers and sisters, and a big shiny balloon in the shape of a number one. On her second birthday, we gathered round her. We held her. We hugged her and kissed her again and again. We told her how much we loved her, and how we were going to miss her so very much. And we said good-bye. For now.
Though heartbreaking, Ela says the entire two and a half days were beautiful. "I've never seen a mother so radiant and glowing. The faith of this family was beyond measure."

Guy Montag (Jordan), a young fireman, begins to question his job after meeting a young woman who convinces him to rebel against society.
Fahrenheit 451 also stars Michael Shannon and Sofia Boutella and premieres on HBO this Spring.

Get Ready to Freak Out: The Walking Dead Has Been Renewed For Season 9!
Big things are happening over at The Walking Dead. On Saturday, the AMC series was officially renewed for a ninth season. It was also announced that now-former showrunner Scott M. Gimple will be moving into a new role as chief content officer for The Walking Dead's entire franchise, including "gaming and future brand extensions." According to The Hollywood Reporter, writer and co-exec producer Angela Kang will take over for Gimple, who signed on as the show's third showrunner in 2013, after the exit of Frank Darabont and Glen Mazzara. Passing the torch to Kang is a smart move considering she has been with the TWD family since 2011 and has written over 20 episodes of the apocalyptic drama. Season nine is expected to return in late 2018. In the words of Negan: I hope you got your sh*tting pants on!
Mark Wahlberg Donates $1.5 Million to the Time's Up Legal Fund in Michelle Williams's Name
Update: On Saturday, Mark Wahlberg agreed to donate the $1.5 million he received for his All the Money in the World reshoots to the Time's Up legal fund. When the news broke that Wahlberg made 1,500 times more than his costar Michelle Williams, it sparked a public outcry, with many arguing that it was a perfect example of the gender wage gap that exists in many industries.
"Over the last few days my reshoot fee for All the Money in the World has become an important topic of conversation," Wahlberg said in a statement. "I 100 percent support the fight for fair pay and I'm donating the $1.5 million to the Time's Up Legal Defense Fund in Michelle Williams' name." WME, the talent agency that serves as representatives for both Wahlberg and Williams, also issued a statement pledging a donation of $500,000 to the cause.

Original story: Michelle Williams was paid less than a fraction of a percent of the fee her costar in All the Money in the World, Mark Wahlberg, earned for reshoots on the movie, according to a new report by USA Today's Andrea Mandell. The nearly completed film underwent an overhaul late last year when Christopher Plummer stepped in to take over the role of J. Paul Getty from Kevin Spacey. The recasting came after a number of sexual-abuse allegations against Kevin Spacey prompted his firing from both the film and his Netflix series, House of Cards.
When the reshoots were announced, director and producer Ridley Scott publicly stated that he and the key cast members (not including Plummer) decided to forego additional payment for the reshoots. At the time, Williams also told USA Today, "I said I'd be wherever they needed me, whenever they needed me. And they could have my salary, they could have my holiday, whatever they wanted. Because I appreciated so much that they were making this massive effort."
In late November, The Washington Post first reported that Wahlberg was being paid more than Williams on reshoots but noted she was still likely being paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for the work. USA Today's new story cites three sources confirming that, in fact, Wahlberg earned $1.5 million for the additional work while Williams took only an $80-a-day per diem, equaling less than $1,000 total.
The news of the extreme salary gap seems especially striking coming just days after Time's Up made a public push for gender equality at the Golden Globes, with women including Debra Messing addressing pay disparity head-on in interviews. Williams herself brought #MeToo founder Tarana Burke as her plus-one to the award show in a bid to raise awareness around sexual assault and women's rights.
Representatives for Williams and Wahlberg - who are both repped at William Morris Entertainment - have not commented on the report. But that hasn't stopped several of Williams's friends and colleagues from speaking out and sharing their outrage about the reported pay disparity on Twitter.

I'm a die-hard Gilmore Girls fan; I've nursed a serious crush on Jess Mariano for more than half my life, I own a "Babette Ate Oatmeal" t-shirt, and attending Gilmore Girls Fan Fest is on my bucket list. I binged Mrs. Maisel in a single sitting, yearning for more episodes after I reached the season finale in the wee morning hours.

A Ton of Photos From the Grey's Anatomy Spinoff Are Here - Including 1 With Meredith
Sure, the Grey's Anatomy spinoff still doesn't have an official title, but has that stopped ABC from sharing a bunch of incredible new photos from the pilot? Of course not! As fans of Shonda Rhimes's medical drama are most likely already aware, Dr. Ben Warren (Jason George) is leaving Grey Sloan Memorial to become a firefighter. The series will follow his exploits as a first responder at a Seattle firehouse and will reportedly be introduced via Grey's Anatomy in a backdoor pilot sometime in the Fall.
The cast includes Rosewood's Jaina Lee Ortiz, Friday Night Lights's Grey Damon, Medium's Miguel Sandoval, The Catch's Jay Hayden, Too Close to Home's Danielle Savre, Iron Fist's Barrett Doss, Dead of Summer's Alberto Frezza, and Broadway's Hamilton star Okieriete Onaodowan. Although the photos ABC recently released don't give us a ton of information, they're a solid glimpse at the cast, as well as a look at how Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) will factor into the first episode.

When Star Wars: The Force Awakens picked off one of our favorite characters from the original trilogy - Han Solo - it made us brace for what might be waiting in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. On the one hand, we worried about Princess Leia's fate in the wake of Carrie Fisher's tragic 2016 death. But it wasn't her we needed to worry about: it was her brother, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill).
The first trailers for the movie started to make us worry that Luke - who only appears in one scene at the end of The Force Awakens - could also be meeting his demise in the latest Star Wars installment. The film's very title also seemed to contain an ominous warning. And upon seeing the movie, at the very end, we witness Luke Skywalker's death. Or do we?
After a rematch against his nephew, Kylo Ren, Luke bests the young villain and then shows that his physical form hadn't actually been there fighting; he was using the Force to appear before Kylo Ren. When he's done, we see Luke's physical form back on Ahch-To . . . just as he disintegrates. It seems that the amount of Force he needs to expend in the duel is too much for his body, and like Yoda before him, he fades into the Force.
As far as we know, yes, this is the end for Luke Skywalker - or, at least, for his physical being. Also like Yoda in his pivotal scene with Luke in The Last Jedi, and Obi-Wan Kenobi before that, Luke will be able to appear again postdeath because he's a Jedi. This leaves room for Hamill to return in the next installment and beyond - so, after all, despite Luke's protest (and the obvious existence of more Jedi in the galaxy), the Jedi will never truly end.

33 Bloody Brilliant Songs From The End of the F***ing World
The End of the F***ing World is in a league of its own. The new British Netflix show, which premiered Jan. 5, follows two teenage runaways as foul-mouthed Alyssa and self-diagnosed psychopath James make a break from their boring home lives, only to end up in more trouble than they bargained for. Eight episodes long, the show is dark and bloody while also maintaining a unique blend of humor and romance, a balance that plays out well partially because of the show's stellar, nostalgic music.
Like the cast, script, and look of The End of the F***ing World, the show's soundtrack is bloody amazing. Not only is the show self-aware enough to acknowledge its American influences, but the soundtrack even features songs from British artists whose sounds have roots in American blues, soul, and rock music. "Keep On Running" by 1960s-era UK band The Spencer Davis Group accompanies James and Alyssa while they themselves are on the run, and the soundtrack is riddled with doo-wop, classic rock, country, and soul songs that are enough to make you forget that the show is set in present day.

You probably already know all the facts about Queen Elizabeth II and her family, but what about Queen Victoria, her great-great-grandmother? Here are 18 facts about the fascinating life of one of Britain's longest-reigning monarchs.
Her Birth Was Eagerly Awaited
Queen Victoria was born on May 24, 1819, at Kensington Palace, instantly becoming fifth in the line of succession after the four eldest sons of King George III: George, the Prince Regent (later George IV); Frederick, the Duke of York; William, the Duke of Clarence (later William IV); and Victoria's father, Edward, the Duke of Kent. Neither George nor Frederick had children, and both William's daughters died as infants. As such, it was important for the Duke of Kent to have a child. When King George III passed away, he was succeeded by the Prince Regent, who was then succeeded by his only remaining brother, the Duke of Clarence (the Duke of Kent died in January 1820) - and Victoria then became the only remaining heir.
Victoria Wasn't Her Real Name
The queen was baptized Alexandrina Victoria, but she always preferred to be called Victoria and therefore dropped Alexandrina.
She Had an Unhappy Childhood.
The princess spent most of her young life at Kensington Palace. Her father died of pneumonia when she was just 8 months old, and she was raised by her mother, Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, Duchess of Kent. The duchess was very close to her personal adviser, Sir John Conroy, who wanted to keep a firm hand on the princess in the event of a Regency. The pair imposed what became known as the "Kensington System" on Victoria, which prevented her from spending time with other children or even her father's family. She was constantly being watched by adults, had to share a room with her mother, and wasn't allowed to walk down the stairs without someone holding her hand. Later in life, Victoria described Conroy as a "demon incarnate" and explained that she "led a very unhappy life as a child . . . and did not know what a happy domestic life was."
She Was Multilingual
Although she didn't go to school, Queen Victoria had lessons given to her by her German governess. She was taught French, Italian, and Latin and grew up speaking both German and English at home. She was also good at math, music, and drawing and learned to speak the Indian language of Hindustani later in life.
She's the Reason Monarchs Live at Buckingham Palace
Queen Victoria was the very first monarch to live at Buckingham Palace - she moved there in 1837, when she was 18.
She Was Petite
Queen Victoria was quite small at barely 5 feet tall.
She Had Hemophilia.
Hemophilia, also known as the "royal disease," is a mostly inherited genetic disorder caused by a mutation on the X chromosome. It impairs the body's ability to make blood clots, which results in people bleeding longer after an injury. Unfortunately, it affected Victoria's family: her son Leopold, Duke of Albany, died from blood loss after he slipped and fell; her grandson Friedrich bled to death when he was just 2 years old; and two other grandsons, Leopold and Maurice, died of the disorder in their early 30s.
She Was a Young Queen
Victoria had just turned 18 when she became monarch in June 1838. At the time, the British Empire included Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, and India, as well as islands such as Jamaica and Barbados.
She Clashed With Politicians
Victoria's relationship with her numerous prime ministers wasn't always easy. She was incredibly close to Lord Melbourne - so much so in fact that it tainted her reputation - but others didn't make quite the same impression on her. She described Lord John Russell as "stubborn and rude," referred to Lord Palmerstone as a "dreadful old man," and said that William Gladstone was a "half-crazy and in many ways ridiculous, wild, and incomprehensible old fanatic."
She Proposed
Queen Victoria first met Prince Albert, her first cousin, a few days before her 17th birthday. She immediately enjoyed his company, and with the encouragement of her uncle Leopold, King of Belgium, proposed to him on Oct. 15, 1839, (as she was the queen, he could not have proposed to her). They were married for 21 years, until his untimely death.
She Started Wedding Trends
At the time of her wedding, wedding dresses were generally colored, but Queen Victoria decided on white satin in order to best show off the lace that she had chosen (the move was designed to give the lace industry a well-needed boost). Orange flower blossoms (a symbol of fertility) were embroidered on her dress, and her train was 18 feet long. She wore a wreath of myrtle and orange blossoms over her veil, white satin shoes, and Turkish diamond earrings, as well as a sapphire brooch that belonged to Prince Albert. The young queen also decided that her guests wouldn't be allowed to wear white, and she had the pattern for her dress destroyed so that no one would be able to copy it.
She Was a Designer in Her Own Right
Victoria had 12 bridesmaids, who were chosen according to their rank. They wore white dresses that were designed by the queen herself and were gifted turquoise brooches in the shape of an eagle.
She Never Had a Honeymoon
Although Prince Albert wanted to take two weeks off, Queen Victoria told him that she simply couldn't take such a long break from her royal duties.
She Had a Huge Family
Although the queen famously didn't enjoy being pregnant, the royal couple had nine children. Princess Victoria was born on Nov. 21, 1840, followed by Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (born in 1841); Princess Alice (born in 1843); Prince Alfred (born in 1844); Princess Helena (born in 1846); Princess Louise (born in 1848); Prince Arthur (born 1850); Prince Leopold (born in 1853); and Princess Beatrice (born 1857).
Attempts Were Made on Her Life
At least six serious murder attempts were made during her reign. The first one happened in 1840. Queen Victoria was pregnant with her first child, and as she was enjoying a carriage ride in London, 18-year-old Edward Oxford fired two shots - he was accused of high treason but found not guilty by reason of insanity. Two years later, a man named John Francis made not one but two attempts to shoot the queen in her carriage, and another named John William Bean tried to fire a gun loaded with paper and tobacco. Two more carriage attacks happened in 1849 and 1850 - the first was carried out by "angry Irishman" William Hamilton, and the second by ex-Army officer Robert Pate, who hit the queen with his cane. The last serious murder attempt happened in March 1882, when the Scottish poet Roderick Maclean shot at Victoria with a pistol while her carriage was leaving the Windsor train station.
She Was in Mourning For Decades
Prince Albert sadly passed away on Dec. 14, 1861, age 42. Following the death of her beloved husband, Queen Victoria retreated from public life and adopted some elaborate mourning rituals. By neglecting her royal duties, her popularity deteriorated, and she was forced to reengage in public life in the 1870s. Although she had other relationships (notably with her Scottish servant John Brown), Victoria never remarried and never fully recovered from her loss. She continued to wear black for the rest of her life, slept beside an image of Albert every night, and even had a set of clothes laid out for him each morning until her own death, 40 years later.
She Bore Witness to Great Inventions
During her reign, Queen Victoria saw the world's first steam railway - and was the first monarch to ride a train! It was also during that time that people had their photos taken for the first time, that electricity started to become more common in houses, that the first phone call was made, and that people went for their first car rides.
She Was the Longest-Running Monarch
Up until 2015 when Queen Elizabeth broke the record, Queen Victoria had been the longest-reigning British monarch in history, having kept the throne for 63 years and seven months. She died still wearing the crown, age 81.
We Will Never Get Over Queen Letizia and King Felipe VI's Wedding
On May 22, 2004, we were glued to our television, hoping to get a glimpse of Letizia Ortiz, now the queen of Spain, in her gorgeous wedding gown. Even in our craziest Disney-princess-inspired dreams, we could have never imagined the stunning silk-woven dress and 15-foot train designed by couturier Manuel Pertegaz. The Ominous Trailer For Fahrenheit 451 Hits Way Too Close to Home in 2018
Ten years ago, dystopian movies and TV shows were fun to watch because they seemed wholly unrealistic and unbelievable. Now, given our current situation (read: the unstable genius leading America into nuclear war), some things might feel like they hit a little too close to home. Take the first trailer for HBO's Fahrenheit 451 adaptation, for instance, which might send some uncomfortable chills down your spine.
The brief teaser shows us a glimpse of a large bonfire of classic books like Crime and Punishment and a look at star Michael B. Jordan's hands. The movie follows the story of Ray Bradbury's 1953 novel, where books are outlawed in a futuristic American society that has "firemen" on hand to burn any remaining publications. Guy Montag (Jordan), a young fireman, begins to question his job after meeting a young woman who convinces him to rebel against society.

Fortunately, he stumbles upon his true passion in life - acting - when he relocates to Los Angeles and starts taking theater classes from a man named Cousineau (Henry Winkler). The award season buzz around Craig Gillespie's Tonya Harding biopic I, Tonya has been building for a while, especially now that lead Margot Robbie took home a Critics' Choice award for her performance as the infamous figure skater. Although Hollywood might be charmed by the dark, comedic take on the 1994 scandal - which involved a man hired by Harding's ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly, bashing fellow figure skater Nancy Kerrigan's knee with a baton - Kerrigan herself is decidedly not a fan. In fact, she'd appreciate it if you stopped asking her if she plans on seeing I, Tonya, OK?
"I really have nothing to say about it. I haven't seen anything. I haven't watched anything," she said during a phone interview with The Boston Globe. "I've been busy. I was at the national [figure skating] championships this week so I didn't watch the Golden Globes. I haven't seen the movie. I'm just busy living my life."

The 48-year-old athlete, who went on to win the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Lillehammer following the incident, has since retired from skating. She's continued to show her moves in a variety of ice skating shows, however, including 2006's Skating With Celebrities on Fox, the 2007 comedy Blades of Glory, and season 24 of Dancing With the Stars. Now that Harding is going on a redemption tour of sorts, how does Kerrigan feel about it?
"I don't know," she told The Boston Globe. "At this point, it's so much easier and better to just be . . . it's not really part of my life. As you say, I was the victim. Like, that's my role in this whole thing. That's it. It is weird, that's for sure. A bizarre thing. The whole thing was crazy, being that it's a story. I mean, come on."
Whether I, Tonya scores a coveted Oscar nomination later this month or not, it's safe to say Kerrigan won't be buying a ticket to see it anytime soon.
This New Song Justin Timberlake Produced Is as Catchy as It Is Heartbreaking
When Justin Timberlake discovered The Shadowboxers in 2013 on Twitter, he knew instantly that they would be stars. Their soulful, infectious sound set them apart from any other band currently in the music scene, and Justin could see that each of the three band members is as musically and vocally talented as the next.
Fast forward a few years later, and The Shadowboxers - bandmates Scott Tyler, Matt Lipkins, and Adam Hoffman from Atlanta - are in the recording studio with Justin, producing some of the most addicting songs your ears ever did hear. After countless hours of writing and recording, The Shadowboxers have come out with a brand-new single called "Runaway" - and it's as catchy as it is heartbreaking.
You can definitely hear hints of Justin's musical influence, and that's because he lent a hand in producing the song.
While The Shadowboxers' last single, "Hot Damn," was a powerhouse hit that gives you a sexy adrenaline rush, "Runaway" is certainly on the more vulnerable side. The song starts with, "Trying to make sense of a rain storm, it don't matter if you're wrong or right. So if you go again, just go again. Don't make a scene." And these are the lyrics in the bridge: "I never thought you'd run away, there's so much we didn't say. Don't you try giving me up." Are your hearts breaking yet?!
Even though "Runaway" certainly has an underlying theme of confusion and uncertainty that's sometimes experienced in a relationship, the beat is absolutely contagious, and you can't help but tap your foot.
