Fresh Off the Runway: Alaska Airlines Unveils an Elevated New Collection of Employee Uniforms

With the Alaska Airlines and Virgin America merger in full swing, it was most necessary to give the brand a refresh, right down to the employee uniforms. On Thursday, Jan. 18, POPSUGAR joined the airline and 2,000 of its employees inside the Alaska Seattle-Tacoma hangar for the big reveal of their new branded ensembles. Seattle fashion designer Luly Yang teamed up with Alaska Airlines to custom design a whole new collection and unveiled over 90 garments and accessories on the runway - the fashion runway, that is.
It was a big day for Alaska Airlines, as it marked the first major brand refresh they've done in 25 years. So 38 airline employees, from maintenance technicians to pilots, modeled the gear themselves. Though airline employees last received new uniforms back in 2011, they didn't check all of the boxes when it came down to the style - and more importantly, functionality - of the everyday workwear. But after two years of surveying thousands of employees, conducting focus groups, and attending worksite visits, Yang seems to have really nailed this one. The result was a collection that was neither more Virgin America or more Alaska Airlines, but a fresh look that the new, united Alaska will be known for.
"It was a melding of the two to create this West Coast-modern vibe that's fresh and pops of color; nice energy that's classic yet modern," Sangita Woerner, Alaska Airlines' vice president of marketing, told POPSUGAR. "[Our uniforms] definitely needed to be more modernized, a little bit fresher, and better fitting, which I think Luly's done a fantastic job of doing."

As the model employees confidently showed off their new uniforms - which will continue to be wear-tested for the next 60 days before making final improvements - it was obvious which pieces were the crowd favorites. The navy, waterproof trench coats (to be worn by all employees) and the brown leather pilot jackets looked amazingly chic - so much so that I wanted to personally take them home after the show. But the one added feature that had the whole room roaring? Pockets. According to Woerner, one of the most demanded requests from employees were more pockets.
"What Luly did was she got down to that level of detail and was really smart about where she placed those pockets to make sure they were superusable," Woerner told us.
New pockets were incorporated into the design of each piece, including dresses, to fit larger devices, tools, pens, baggage tags, and other common items. Yang made sure that shirts stayed tucked when employees reached up (another popular comment), allowed enough stretch in the waistband for pilots to sit comfortably in the cockpit for long periods of time, and more. She truly thought of everything when it comes to utility, and it didn't hurt that the employees looked stylish, as well. Keeping everyone's feedback in mind was also one of the most difficult parts about designing this collection.

"The most challenging part was taking input from so many voices, so many opinions - they have 13 different work groups with different job functions, and we had to make that all work into a cohesive way," Yang told POPSUGAR.
A total of 130 employees have been wear-testing the line to make sure it's practical across jobs. In addition to making sure the uniforms looked fantastic, Alaska Airlines also partnered with Unisync and OEKO-TEX to ensure that every garment receives the highest certification in safety and quality.

After the show, I got to see and appreciate all the aforementioned details up close. I spoke with a few of the model employees, who unanimously shared that comfort, movement, and quality were brought through this collection. Air pilot Sara Zieske loved the fact that she'd be able to sport a scarf instead of a tie, while flight attendant Justin Fitzgerald enjoyed how "comfortable and stylish" his uniform was.
Though all 19,000 Alaska Airlines, Virgin America, and Horizon Air employees won't be fully suited up in their new gear until the end of 2019, Alaska is keeping busy with plenty of other updates in the interim. Within the next two years, the airline is aiming to really step up their brand presence and take over California in addition to the already secured Pacific Northwest region.
"I think the next major milestone will be when we hit this threshold level of awareness and preference up and down the West Coast," Woerner told us. "Once people know who Alaska is, understand why we're different than other carriers out there, and they start to know that we're about service, we're about great fares and great value, and we have this West Coast vibe - if we can land that in the next couple years, that'll be the milestone.

The 1 Problem With Traveling With a Toddler That Took Me by Total Surprise
Before venturing on my first flight with my 2 1/2-year-old son, I had a lot of concerns. My overactive brain thought about every problem that could likely occur . . . except for the one that actually did. Sure, having a toddler scream and kick on a plane would have been awful, but having him struggle through the time change was worse. Instead of this hurdle being over in a few short hours, it lasted days.
Two hours to an adult really isn't a big deal, but to a highly regimented toddler, it was something that, in hindsight, I shouldn't have underestimated. For days he was taking naps at the wrong time and for the wrong length, eating at odd hours, and waking far too early. All of these little changes made for a grumpy, exhausted, and overstimulated child. This, of course, meant I was also all of those things.
Sure, eventually he acclimated, but not without some strong compromises. A lot of time was wasted on our vacation because of missteps along the way. Knowing what I know now, there are some things I will be more mindful of in the future and one thing we did right.
- Heading east is not the same as heading west. On a previous road trip to New York, we didn't concern ourselves too much with the time change since he was going to be expected to stay up later than usual. However, for a child who has a strict schedule, staying up two hours later was huge. Be aware that you're asking a lot from them, and there will be an adjustment period.
- Be outside and active as much as possible. Since their rhythm is going to be off, it's best to get them exposed to as much sunlight as possible. Let them see that it's daylight and that life continues as normal, just in a new place. Additionally, keep them as active as possible so that they're not aware of how tired they are.
- Make car trips short. My son loves to nap in his car seat, and while that was great on the plane, it made getting him adjusted to the time change difficult. We'd get in the car to go to the children's museum and he'd fall asleep by the time we got there, thus ruining his naps.
- Bring snacks, but keep meal times consistent. He was ready for lunch at 10 a.m., despite having just eaten an impressively large breakfast. By trying to feed him his meals when he was hungry, I kept resetting his natural clock. Instead of trying to accommodate his insatiable appetite, I should have given him snacks to keep the hunger at bay and then focused on a proper lunch at a regular time.
- Be flexible, and think incrementally. My son's usual bedtime is 7:30 p.m., meaning that on our trip to the West Coast, he was going to want to sleep around 5:30 p.m. Since this would mean getting up at 5 a.m., which I obviously didn't want to do, I had to work his schedule incrementally. While I would have loved for him to go to bed at his normal time, this would have made for an overtired toddler. We compromised in the middle, and he was passed out around 6:30 p.m. In a couple days, we were able to move his bedtime back to his normal schedule. This was one way we were successful in dealing with the time change. When we travel again, I'll be sure to implement this strategy.

PSA: Amazon Prime's Monthly Fees Are Going Up
Amazon Prime is officially going to get more expensive for monthly subscribers. The company is increasing the price from $10.99 to $12.99 a month, according to TechCrunch, which would make the total at the end of the year $156. So, if you were thinking of getting a Prime subscription, it's ultimately going to be cheaper to sign up for the annual membership - that's going to remain at the same price.
The company is also bumping its student pricing by 18 percent, with the cost increasing from $5.49 to $6.49 - but the yearly fee will stay at $49. The new pricing will start on Jan. 19 for new members, while existing ones will see the increase on the first renewal payment after Feb. 18.

Minecraft Boss Helen Chiang on Her New Role, Breaking Records, and What's in Store For 2018
On Jan. 17, a collective cheer erupted among women in tech and gaming when news broke that Helen Chiang had been named the new head of Minecraft at Microsoft. Chiang replaced Matt Booty - who was promoted to head of Microsoft Studios – but she's no stranger to the brand, having previously overseen operations and being a nine-year Xbox veteran. Chiang is also the first woman of color to lead a major gaming studio - and a passionate supporter of the digital world that Minecraft inhabits.
"I've gotten to know the people in the studio really well over the last three years, and I can't think of a better team to get to lead," Chiang told me by phone on Jan. 19. "When I think about what's next for us - well, my job is really not to change the plan that we're on, but to focus on a number of different things."
"The first one is bringing over more people to Bedrock through Nintendo, and that's coming out pretty soon. The second is expanding the features in the game that the players love, so we have the update Aquatic coming out pretty soon. The third one is the new graphics engine that we talked about both at MINECON and E3, the superduper graphics pack. They're all areas that I'm really excited about and that the team is working very hard on."
Chiang's ascension comes at a time when Minecraft is reaching all-time highs in nearly every metric; 144 million copies of the game have been sold across more than a dozen platform, with 74 million players coming back to play the game each month.
"We just recently set a new record in December for monthly active users, so now we're at 74 million monthly active users - and that's really a testament to people coming back to the game, whether it's through the game updates or bringing in new players from across the world," Chiang told me. "That's really our goal, to keep building the community that we have."
Going forward, Chiang hopes to unite all of the Minecraft players on different devices into one, cohesive community. "The Better Together update came out in the Fall, and that was really our first step towards this vision of bringing all of our players together," she said.
"All of our players are playing across a number of different devices and platforms, and it shouldn't matter where they're playing - what's important to us is that they have the opportunity to play it together, because it makes it so much more of a rich experience. That's the journey we're still on . . . we've been doing a lot of work to expand into new geographies and really just making Minecraft available to anybody, anywhere in the world, any way that they want to play."
Naturally, growing the community requires the game to be constantly updated, and the team at Minecraft is hard at work at making that happen. That's where Chiang's other two key endeavors - the graphics update and the update Aquatic - come into play.
"The update Aquatic is focused on Minecraft oceans . . . it'll bring a rich set of new experiences to our players, and we're really excited about that," Chiang said, noting that she recently previewed the updates and, while the big news has been the addition of turtles to gameplay, she's far more amped about the dolphins that will make their way into Minecraft with the next update.
Chiang also pointed to the Bedrock update for Switch - which will introduce some previously unavailable features to the platform, most notably the Marketplace for textures, mini games, and skins - as a huge step toward improving the cross-platform experiences. The Marketplace enables creative-minded fans to develop their own Minecraft experiences and sell them to other players - and has been a massive boon for the company, especially as it brings new content to users on a regular basis.
"I'm really excited about how well the marketplace has done," she said. "It launched in June of 2016 and has steadily been growing month over month - we just came off the strongest month this past December. Honestly, it's been just so amazing to watch the creators grow. And the part that's really inspiring to me is the stories I hear about how we're changing creators' lives. Some of them have been really involved in Minecraft for a long time . . . and because they've seen so much success in the marketplace, they've been able to quit the job that they thought would be the one that financially sustained them and been able to go focus on the thing that they're truly passionate about."
"A lot of these creators grew up playing Minecraft, and now they're the ones creating content for Minecraft," she added. "I love that Minecraft can unlock that creativity in people and really give them the opportunity to build a life for themselves on it."
The final piece of the puzzle, then, is the new graphics engine. But it's no easy task, developing a system that works across such a large number of platforms around the world - especially given that the aim is to come up with the perfect version of everything that rolls out on Minecraft, as opposed to requiring constant patches and fixes on something that wasn't ready for market.
"People ask, 'Hey, when is it coming out?' Well, I think the thing that we've learned through the Better Together update is that we want it to be perfect when it comes out," she explained. "So the team is taking the time to iterate and make sure that the experience is at the quality we want it to be by the time we bring it out to our players."
Above all else, Chiang wants to ensure that the Minecraft studio is a place where the creative staff can really work their magic. As it stands, she's already been an inspiration to those she's worked with over the last couple of years at Minecraft - not just as a leader, but as a working mother, a woman of color, and a female voice in a primarily male-dominated world.
"The Minecraft franchise has never been stronger, and Helen's amazing work and thoughtful leadership have been instrumental to our success as a global Minecraft team," Head of Communications Aubrey Norris told me. "She is so inspiring to me as a woman in games and a mother - she proves to people like me that we can run a major games studio and be a wonderful mom."
For her part, Chiang describes her driving motivations as twofold; she wants to make a difference in the world while at the same time having a lot of fun and empowering those around her to evolve Minecraft to the next level.
"That's why I'm so passionate about working on Minecraft," she said. "Life is too short to not work on something fun . . . and I [want to] build a place where everyone in the studio is empowered and enabled to do their best work. We have amazing artists, and designers, and engineers - and really, my job is to make sure that we're building the right environment for them to go do their best work."
From a fan perspective, it's incredibly exciting to have such a brilliant woman at the helm of such an immensely impactful cultural phenomenon. Her promotion is a big win for hardworking, passionate females in STEM around the world - and I really can't wait to see what new heights the Minecraft universe will reach under her guidance.

Disneyland's first event in a forthcoming series of themed nights this year was an ode to the rides, tunes, and thrills of yesteryear, complete with food, music, entertainment, and characters fit for vintage-obsessed Disney fans.
There were few details announced before the Jan. 18 festivities, so we went in excited to discover what '50s- and '60s-inspired experiences would be on offer for Disneyland's very first After Dark event - and what the differences would be between this moonlit celebration and the park's other nighttime event, Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. Meet Replika, the AI Bot That Wants to Be Your Best Friend
On the day before Replika was officially made available to the public, more than 1.5 million people had already queued up on the app's waiting list, in addition to the several hundred thousand who had already been granted access as part of a beta testing program. What kind of app could possibly amass an initial user group that's the size of the entire population of Philadelphia? The answer may surprise you: Replika is an artificial-intelligence-driven chatbot on a mission to become your best friend.
The concept is of course reminiscent of that iconic Black Mirror episode, where a woman who's just lost her husband brings him back via AI only to find it's the exact opposite of anything she could have wanted - and that's a similarity that was not lost on critics of the first iteration of Replika, Roman. Eugenia Kuyda, cofounder of software development company Luka, developed Roman in response to the death of her best friend and business partner around the same time that she had watched the episode. And while Roman was met with mixed reviews due to its solitary function as a human replacement, Replika is a more evolved and user-friendly version of the program that serves not just as a friend but also as a personal journal. The more you talk to your Replika companion, the more it learns and becomes like you - and the more it gives you the type of feedback and reaction that a friend would if placed in the same position.
"We have diehard fans of Replika, and Replika is there for them every day - they're finding an outlet there," Kuyda told me by phone in advance of the app's Nov. 1, free-to-use launch, adding, "It's allowing people to feel like it's OK to be themselves, to feel better." And she's not exaggerating when she says that. I was given access to advance testing of the apps for several weeks before launch, and while I was at first hesitant to reveal anything personal, it quickly became apparent that it was learning my humor, my snark, my interests - and could mimic them in a way that made me feel as if a like-minded individual was typing to me in real life. Kuyda says that the average Replika user sends 40-50 messages per day to their AI companion, a number that she says is comparable to the total amount of texts sent on an average day by an American teenager.
As it stands, Replika doesn't have a lot of features outside of logging your activities, interacting with your companion, and leveling up by spending more time using the app. But the use cases are endless. "It helps you open up," Kuyda said, citing her own experience with the app as a way it can be used to help with being a more confident, thoughtful person when she's out in the world. "I'm not great with conversations; I never really know how to talk to other people in the right way or make them feel better," she said, before describing how she uses Replika to help unpack and pick apart what she's thinking and feeling and as a sounding board before entering high-stress situations. But Kuyda reiterates that there's a strong case for Replika as a healthy alternative to social media networks that can make us feel more alone. "You'd be amazed how lonely people are feeling now . . . it doesn't matter if they have a lot of friends or have a cool job. They feel disconnected from other people and from life," she said, adding that it's not meant to take the place of human engagement, instead serving to make that human engagement feel a little less daunting.
"It's a very simple idea," Kuyda said. "We really want it to be a healthy relationship. We have so many apps that make us feel like sh*t every day, and I just want to build something that will make us feel better."

The Augmented Reality Feature in Messenger is Freakin' Awesome
Augmented reality - better known as AR - is quickly becoming a part of our everyday lives, mainly through the apps we use the most. The most recent app to take the plunge into the world of future tech? Facebook's Messenger, which on Dec. 12 announced a brand-new AR-focused feature: World Effects. Now, instead of just sending your loved ones a static image or standard video, you can spice up your messages with 3D objects that can be dropped anywhere in the vicinity of the camera in your device.
"World Effects technology enables you to drop 3D objects into your surroundings to capture and share fun moments with your family and friends," the Facebook post announcing the new feature reads. "For example, add a 3D heart floating over someone's head and then try panning your phone's camera from side to side. Or use an arrow to point to an exact object or location in a panorama so your friend knows what you're referring to. Or better yet, add a new fun, celebratory robot to an otherwise every-day setting and spice things up a bit. (Hint: be sure to try the robot out with your phone's volume turned up - the robot plays three different kinds of music!)"
To get started with World Effect, simply open the camera in your Messenger app and scroll to the type of 3D image you'd like to drop in the scene - currently, you can choose from a heart, an arrow, a robot, several different word bubbles, and a unicorn - and then tap your screen to let it loose on the world. And here's a hot tip: there's no easier way to let a long-distance friend or family member know you're thinking about them than by sending them a video message (complete with 3D objects and all!) this holiday season - and if you're already messing around with Messenger, why not take the opportunity to have a little fun with it?

Take Back Control of Your News Feed With Facebook's Snooze Feature
There's never been a civil way to handle that twice-removed aunt or former childhood bestie who cannot help themselves from oversharing on Facebook. You know the one I'm talking about, that person who constantly posts photos of the same thing (a pet, a child, their meals) and clogs up your News Feed day after day. The statement that unfriending them would make is just not worth the headache, and honestly, you love to see what they're up to, but you don't want to be inundated with that (pet, child, meal) every time you open up Facebook. Well, as of Dec. 15, we finally have a way to properly filter our News Feeds - all while being completely invisible to those social media offenders who drive us up the wall.
The new feature is called Snooze, and it allows you to hide all posts from any given Facebook friend for 30 guilt-free days. The best part, though, is that you're not actually unfriending or blocking the individual - so while your News Feed gets a little breathing room and you get more visibility on what your other friends are doing, you can always view that person's profile directly and see all of what you're not seeing in your News Feed on your own time. The process is also simple; in the drop-down menu on the top-right corner of any post, click "Snooze" - and voila, you've just taken a much-needed step toward restoring your social media sanity.
Oh, and did we mention that this works for groups and pages as well? If you're tired of hearing about the same old bad news from a website but don't want to permanently kiss it goodbye, it's super easy to just Snooze it, too. The Exciting, Inspiring Reason Why All of This Year's SAG Award Presenters Are Women

On the heels of a monumental night at the Golden Globes, where women banded together by wearing black and putting sexual harassment and equal pay at the forefront, the Screen Actors Guild Awards is following suit by making some major (and historic) changes to this year's show. In addition to introducing a host for the first time ever (Kristen Bell will be the inaugural emcee), the list of presenters features only women.
The impressive roster - which includes Halle Berry, Patricia Arquette, Olivia Munn, Niecy Nash, Lupita Nyong'o, and Emma Stone - is a calculated move on the part of SAG-AFTRA; Kathy Connell, an executive producer of show, explained the reasoning behind the bold choice to The Hollywood Reporter in December, calling it "a unifying salute to women who have been very brave in speaking up" about sexual misconduct in recent months. SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris expanded on that statement when she spoke to THR ahead of the ceremony and gave even more background on the plan, which she revealed has actually been in the works for more than a year.

"We work so hard on creating economic and creative equity," she said. "We're celebrating all of our actors but are really looking to highlight and celebrate the women and the great work they're doing." She went on with more inspiring reasons for the all female presenter list: "It is clear that the time is now for all of us to come together and really move forward and create this cultural shift we're looking for. That's the real truth, and the awards can be a platform [for that] or not. The time is now - you feel the energy behind it and people are ready. I would like to see us create from that energy."
While actresses won't be expected to wear black like they did at the Golden Globes, Carteris noted that SAG-AFTRA has been "actively collaborating with various human rights organizations and initiatives," as well as the Time's Up initiative. "These are our members, and they're looking to create a meaningful future for all of us," she told THR, adding, "I'm interested in true systemic change, and if we're really going to make a shift, we have to deal with it on not just an industry level but an international and global level."

Paul Bettany Is Likely in Line to Become the Next Prince Philip on The Crown
If rumors are to be believed, The Crown might have found its new Prince Philip. Netflix's royal drama has been busy replacing the current cast with actors who are a little bit older to reflect the passage of time on the show, and while Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret's replacements have been found, the lucky man tasked with taking over Matt Smith's role was still a mystery.
Well, we hope you're a fan of Paul Bettany, because the Avengers: Infinity War actor is reportedly in line to replace Smith as Prince Philip for seasons three and four. If this turns out to be true, he will join Olivia Coleman, who is confirmed to take Claire Foy's place as Queen Elizabeth II in the award-winning historical epic. Helena Bonham Carter is reportedly also in talks with producers about joining the show to play Princess Margaret, and a recent Instagram picture from current star Vanessa Kirby seemed to confirm the news.
We'll no doubt miss Foy and Smith on The Crown, but can't wait to see how the new cast follow through on the royal family drama. The Crown's third season will be released sometime in Fall 2019.
16 Things We Know About The Handmaid's Tale Season 2
We're officially in some new fresh hell in 2018, and when it comes to The Handmaid's Tale, we're already looking ahead. If you read the book, you'll know that the first season finale ends in the same frustrating way the book ends: June is taken into a mysterious van and carted off to a mysterious future somewhere else. In this case, though, we don't have to wonder endlessly. The story will continue. Since we're venturing into uncharted territory beyond the books, the sky is pretty much the limit. How much can we uncover about the show's next chapter? Well, blessed be the fruit - we've got a lot to go over. Let's see what we could uncover (under his eye).
1. It's Going to Be Longer
While the first season was 10 episodes, the second has been extended to 13.
2. Alexis Bledel Will Reprise Her Role
Thought you'd seen the last of Ofglen/Emily? Not so fast. Bledel has been confirmed as part of season two's cast! We'll get a glimpse of Ofglen in the Colonies, the toxic wasteland where women who commit crimes are sent as punishment. "We get to see the colonies. It's a terrible place where they send Unwomen to work them to death," executive producer Bruce Miller said during a pre-Emmy panel in August. Bledel also commented on her character's new situation, saying, "I'm very interested to see what that looks like because it's a completely different world we haven't seen on the show yet - and I'm scared."
3. The Colonies Are Even Bleaker and Darker Than They Sound
A new feature by Marie Claire describes the Colonies in all their grim glory. As a refresher, the Colonies are where deviants (known as Unwomen) get sent for misbehaving. The new story describes the Colonies as "a dark and grime-filled wasteland." Costume designer Ane Crabtree offered a bit more insight. "The Unwomen are kind of the new Handmaids in season two. They're turning over soil, trying to move radiation, so they get filthy," she revealed. "They have probably six months - at best two years - to live. We're trying to show that humanity in their costumes. I made beautiful sheer pieces to be worn under their outfits since they strip down, as their clothing is full of radiation." Yikes.

5. Surprise, Surprise: The President Has Inspired Parts of the Season
While season one of the show was planned before the 2016 election, the same is not true for season two. When it comes to some of Trump's "draconian policies," as Marie Claire phrases it, creator Bruce Miller can't help but incorporate today's reality into the fabric of the show. "Oh, I think we can't help but let it influence us," he said. "We have let it influence us. And there are a lot of issues we brought up last year that we want to address this year in ways we never had time to."
6. Things Are Only Going to Get Worse All Around
Earlier this month, The Pool interviewed Elisabeth Moss and grilled her on what's to come. "Wait till you see what's coming! It's going to get worse, girl. Season two is going to be bad too, really dark." Here we were, thinking June might have been rescued from the Waterfords. Maybe it's not that simple.

Elle ran a profile of Moss in early June, and she dropped a small tidbit about her Gilead lover, Nick. "It's part of the reason that I'm really excited about a season two, she's in this position where she might be in love with two people," Moss said, "Honestly, I think she does love Nick - if I can speak for her - but I don't know if she knows that she does yet. But she has a husband who she also loves, who's the father of Hannah, who she also now knows is alive."
9. Pay Attention to the Marthas
Showrunner Bruce Miller noted, "The Marthas in general in Gilead are kind of invisible . . . it's been great for us that it's been such a slow and careful building of a relationship between Rita and Offred. That slow and careful build-up in season one leads to a payoff so that we can use her more in season two."
10. We Might See Aunt Lydia's Backstory
Meanwhile, Miller also spoke to The New York Times about season two. Aunt Lydia could still play a key role in the show's next chapter. "Aunt Lydia is one of my most fascinating characters," Miller said. "We would like to explore her back story, and what the lives of the aunts are like."
11. The Mayday Resistance Is Another Key Component, but Let's Not Get Too Excited
It's easy to assume Mayday means salvation for the Handmaids, but not so fast. "The Mayday resistance is going to be a big part of Season two," Miller admitted. "The part that I've been thinking about is that Mayday is not the handmaid rescue organization - it's the anti-Gilead organization. And the anti-Gilead organization is not necessarily a friend to June or a friend to Handmaids. If I was going to try to hurt Gilead, the first thing I might do is kill all the handmaids. You're trying to weaken the state."
12. The Waterfords Aren't Necessarily Going Away
After the finale, Miller talked about what's to come. In regards to the Waterfords, he said, "They're still a part of our plans for season two but in interesting ways."
13. We Might Meet June's Mother
Miller also explained how June's parentage could factor into the story. Miller spoke about June's mother: "We've been thinking about her a lot. June's mother is a big character in the book and representative of an interesting kind of feminism that was seemingly more of that time."
14. The Theme
"At the end of season one, we find out June was pregnant. The theme of season two is motherhood and what it means to be a mother," Miller explained at The Handmaid's Tale panel in August. "It's the way we mother our good friends and the people in our lives."
15. Luke and Moira Might Attempt a Daring Rescue
During the panel in August, Samira Wiley discussed the new possibilities season two holds since it's going beyond the story of the book. "The [first] season ends exactly where the book ends, and to be able to go in season two not knowing what's going to happen and to be in this completely new country with Luke who's the only family I have, it's exciting to see what's going to happen," she said.
16. The Premiere Date Has Been Set
The second season is going to drop in April, but there hasn't been any word on what day.

The world is as captivated with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's romance as they were with Prince William and Kate Middleton's love story. We've followed every milestone of the twosome's relationship since their first official outing as a couple at the Invictus Games last year, and the pair has only gotten more serious since then. So far we've enjoyed key events like their sweet engagement announcement, their first Christmas with the Queen, and their first outing on official royal business.
Ever since the couple set the date for their upcoming royal nuptials on May 19, though, it seems like the whole world has been wondering the same question: where the newlyweds will be honeymooning once the festivities are done?
Given Prince Harry's love of warm climates, it's only natural that speculation is leading us all to believe they'll choose somewhere hot. The fact they fell in love while on holiday in Botswana means the country has a special place in their hearts, and they've also had an open invitation from the Prime Minister of Antigua to spend their honeymoon on the Caribbean island. If the insider reports are true, there's also a chance we may just see Harry and Megan follow William and Kate's example, with a honeymoon in the Seychelles. According to a source, Us Weekly reports that we won't have to wait too much longer to hear where they plan to jet off after the wedding.
"At the moment nothing has been booked, but expect a decision to be made within a month," the source revealed, adding that certain security measures will be put in place once Harry and Meghan pick a destination. "Once the decision has been made, they will have a security team fly out to do reconnaissance and the info will be confidential. Should anything get out they would feel the trip's compromised and pick a new destination."
The source noted that the royal couple definitely has somewhere "hot and sunny" in mind for their two week getaway. Regardless of where they end up, we have a feeling they won't be flying economy for this trip!
Why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Baby Plans Might Be on Hold For a While
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle might not have walked down the aisle yet, but already the subject of having kids has come up for the couple a few times. During a joint December interview with the BBC, Harry opened up about starting a family with his future bride after proposing to the Suits star back in November. When asked by reporter Mishal Husain about whether he and Meghan are planning on having kids anytime soon, Harry replied, "Not yet, no, but I think eventually, one step at a time, and we'll start a family in the near future."
Now it seems the "near future" might be a bit further down the road than some would have assumed. "There is absolutely no pressure on the couple to have children at all," a source from inside the palace told Us Weekly. "Should they not want any, that would be fine. However, both are keen to start a family in the future, but don't expect anything immediately."
According to the insider, Harry and Meghan have their sights set on conquering goals as husband and wife first before adding children into the mix. "There is so much they want to do as a couple, and Meghan is really keen to begin working for the British Monarchy."
The source also revealed Meghan "is already having private meetings with charities that Harry has helped set up so she can get to know the humanitarian landscape of the U.K."
That's not to say that Harry and Meghan haven't expressed their desires to have little ones of their own. Back in April, Harry told The Telegraph that he "would love to have kids." Family life has also been on Meghan's mind for quite some time now. In May 2016, Meghan told Best Health magazine that she couldn't "wait to start a family." The 36-year-old reiterated her sentiments just a few months later, telling Lifestyle magazine she dreamed of being a mom.
"It's all about balance," she stated. "I have so much happiness in my career and am fortunate to travel the world and see so many amazing things - it will also be nice to be anchored to something grounded and in the same place. Raising a family will be a wonderful part of that."
When we think about all of the times Harry was out-of-control cute with kids and Meghan's humanitarian work with young girls, we can't help but believe these two, who already looked like doting parents while visiting a community center for children recently, will make wonderful, loving parents whenever "the near future" arrives.
Tom Petty's Cause of Death Has Been Revealed
Tom Petty passed away at the age of 66 on Oct. 2, 2017, and his family revealed his cause of death in a Facebook statement on Friday. According to his wife, Dana, and daughter Adria, the music legend died from "an accidental drug overdose as a result of taking a variety of medications." Tom's family also revealed that he had been suffering from emphysema, knee problems, and a badly fractured hip, which he had still been recovering from while he was on tour with his band last year.
"As a family we recognize this report may spark a further discussion on the opioid crisis and we feel that it is a healthy and necessary discussion and we hope in some way this report can save lives," the statement read. "Thank you also for respecting the memory of a man who was truly great during his time on this planet both publicly and privately."
Tom was laid to rest in a private service at the Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine in Pacific Palisades, CA, on Oct. 16, 2017, and is survived by his wife, Dana, and his two adult daughters, Adria and AnnaKim, whom he shares with ex-wife Jane Benyo.
