American Crime Story: What You Need to Know About Gianni Versace’s Tragic Murder

Image Source: Getty / Michel Arnaud

The next season of American Crime Story is getting closer, and thanks to a last-minute switch, it's focusing on an entirely different subject. What was once a season centered around the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Katrina has switched places with what used to be the third installment: The Assassination of Gianni Versace. (The Katrina season is still happening, for the record; it's slated to be the show's third season.) The release of the Versace season has been set for Wednesday, Jan. 17, so in the meantime we can brush up on the facts of the chilling crime. What happened to Gianni Versace? Here are the facts.

A Brief History of the Killer

The name of Versace's killer was Andrew Cunanan (who will be played by Darren Criss). In the two weeks leading up to the murder, Cunanan had killed four other people. His victims were ex-Navy lieutenant Jeffrey Trail, 28, a friend; Minneapolis architect David Madson, 33, a former lover; Chicago developer Lee Miglin, 72, whose relationship to Cunanan is unknown; and William Reese, 45, a cemetery caretaker in New Jersey. Cunanan stole Reese's pickup truck and used it for the final portion of his journey.

The Murder of Versace

Gianni Versace (set to be played by Édgar Ramírez) touched down in Miami on July 10, 1997, five days before his murder. He immediately went to Casa Casuarina, his Miami Beach retreat, with his partner Antonio D'Amico (who will be portrayed by Ricky Martin). At that point, Cunanan was already in town.

On July 15, 1997, sometime around 8 a.m., Versace left on his own and walked to a local cafe to buy magazines. He walked home, and just as he put the key in his lock, he was shot twice. The first shot was directly into his face, at point-blank range. He was shot again in the neck, just behind the left ear. The call went in to the police at 8:45 a.m. D'Amico recently recalled how he felt in that moment: "I heard the shot. My heart just stopped to beat . . . So I ran out and then I saw Gianni laying down on the stairs in blood."

Police Involvement, Possible Motives, and the Chase

Carlos Noriega, a lieutenant, was one of the first police men on the case. An early theory was that this had been a contract hit, organized by the mafia. The clue was a dead bird found next to the body. However, further evidence suggested that the bird was just an unfortunate collateral victim - it was hit by a bullet fragment.

Lazaro Quintana, a friend of Versace, followed the gunman. Eventually, the police were in on the chase, and they came across the first evidence. They found a pile of clothes, the stolen pick-up from New Jersey, and a bunch of identification. The police had their suspect three hours after the crime: Andrew Cunanan.

The Final Stand and All the Unanswered Questions

The search for Andrew Cunanan lasted nine days. Finally, the police received a tip. On July 24, a shot had been heard on a houseboat, just a few miles from where Versace had been murdered. Police surrounded the houseboat and remained there for four hours. Finally, the SWAT team fired tear gas and went in.

When the police boarded the boat, Cunanan was already dead. He had shot himself in the temple with the same gun he'd used to kill Versace. Cunanan's suicide left the world with more questions than answers. The police could not draw a connection between the two men, nor could they pin down a motive. They weren't even sure Cunanan and Versace had ever previously crossed paths. It remains one of the most puzzling crimes in recent history, even more than 20 years later.

If American Crime Story creator Ryan Murphy follows the same formula he did for The People v. O.J. Simpson, chances are we'll get a lot more backstory. After all, Murphy included a jarring scene where O.J. Simpson contemplated suicide, and that did actually happen. In order to fill in the blanks and complete the story, Murphy also took a bit of artistic license. Does that mean we'll leave the season with a sense of how everything might be connected? It sure seems like it.

13 Reasons Why: Dylan Minnette Just Spilled the Juiciest Details About Season 2

Dylan Minnette is singing like a canary. The 13 Reasons Why star caught up with Seventeen magazine ahead of the show's highly anticipated second season, and, boy, did he dish some juicy details for the fans. "It would have been weird to end Hannah's story in season one because we only heard very small tidbits of her life told by her," Minnette argued in defense of the decision to go forward with another season. "There's a whole life that Hannah had, and there's more we can learn about her. Overall, learning more about her is more important to the entire narrative."

As far as what fans can expect for his character, Clay, Minnette revealed he'll still be recovering from the aftermath of Hannah's suicide and the tapes she left behind. "I think that the impact of Hannah and the tapes on Clay's life will never ever go away no matter how hard he tries. No matter what, it's going to take him a while to recover. You can see that it's not easy for Clay to let anything go. And that's expected. I don't think anyone expects Clay to just kind of think of Hannah and be like, 'No, it was nothing.'"

Minnette continued, "There's a lot of recovery for these characters. So, I think it's necessary and I was excited about a season two. Now looking back, I'm like, I get it. I get why we did it." The Open House actor also hinted that we shouldn't expect to see many scenes between Hannah (Katherine Langford) and Clay this go around. "I think we learn pretty much almost everything we needed to know about what Clay and Hannah's relationship was [in season one]. I think that's pretty clear."

According to Minnette, what we will see is more interaction between Hannah and new characters we haven't met yet. "I think that's interesting because in season one, whenever there was a flashback, it was either Hannah or Clay's flashback and either Clay or Hannah or both were always in it. Now, maybe there will be a flashback they're not in and you can learn more about something else. I thought that was pretty cool."

Minnette later addressed the possibility of a new romance for Clay. "I can't say too much, but Skye is still around and in the picture and there's a chance that her and Clay could be friends or more," he said. "That's something you'll learn pretty quickly when the season starts. I don't want to spoil that for you, but she's around."

Now we really can't wait for season two!

Drumroll, Please: These Are the Kickass Women of 2018's Most Exciting Movies

Last year is already being discussed as one of those years that people are dying to forget, but honestly, all of its difficulties allow us to propel forward, and I mean that in no trite way as it pertains to 2018 movies. After all, movies and Hollywood are a reflection of our social situation and the environment that birthed both the #MeToo movement and Time's Up. Now, in the midst of a rebellious, totally different award season, we're getting the kind of movies that we need: movies that celebrate women. Movies that star primarily women. Movies that portray women as more than mothers and girlfriends. Yes, these movies have always existed, but 2018 is giving us an impressive volume of these, particularly with movies full of women who are kicking ass. Behold, the movies starring the fiercest females of 2018 that you won't just want to see - you'll want to be.

Jamie Dornan Leaves Anastasia Steele at Home For a Date Night With His Wife

If you've been having Mr. Grey - er, Jamie Dornan - withdrawals, get excited, because we have a treat for you! On Thursday night, the handsome actor was spotted out on a romantic date night with his wife, Amelia Warner. The two held hands as they walked over to the Soho House in London, and Jamie was ever the gentleman as he led the way for Amelia.

We haven't seen much of the couple since they attended a JDRF charity dinner in London back in November, but it's likely that Jamie is trying to squeeze in some quality time with his wife before he begins his press tour for Fifty Shades Freed. The film hits theaters on Feb. 9.

Before Johnny Galecki Was on Big Bang Theory, He Was Stealing Darlene's Heart on Roseanne

Roseanne is coming back to TV on March 27, and one person we're definitely excited to see is Johnny Galecki. The Big Bang Theory star managed to carve out some time from his busy schedule to reprise his role as Darlene Conner's (Sara Gilbert) husband, David Healy, and according to Entertainment Tonight, he's already filmed his first episode! Even though he'll only appear in one out of the eight episodes, we're happy to have Galecki back. As we await his return, take a walk down memory lane and look back at Galecki in the original Roseanne.

A Ton of Photos From the Grey's Anatomy Spinoff Are Here - Including 1 With Meredith

Sure, the Grey's Anatomy spinoff still doesn't have an official title, but has that stopped ABC from sharing a bunch of incredible new photos from the pilot? Of course not! As fans of Shonda Rhimes's medical drama are most likely already aware, Dr. Ben Warren (Jason George) is leaving Grey Sloan Memorial to become a firefighter. The series will follow his exploits as a first responder at a Seattle firehouse and will reportedly be introduced via Grey's Anatomy in a backdoor pilot sometime in the Fall.

The cast includes Rosewood's Jaina Lee Ortiz, Friday Night Lights's Grey Damon, Medium's Miguel Sandoval, The Catch's Jay Hayden, Too Close to Home's Danielle Savre, Iron Fist's Barrett Doss, Dead of Summer's Alberto Frezza, and Broadway's Hamilton star Okieriete Onaodowan. Although the photos ABC recently released don't give us a ton of information, they're a solid glimpse at the cast, as well as a look at how Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) will factor into the first episode.

The 10-episode spinoff will have a special two-hour premiere on March 22, before moving to its regular slot on Thursdays at 9 p.m. EST, starting March 29. In the meantime, feast your eyes on all the images ahead!

I Traded Up For the Apple TV 4K and Here's Why I'll Never Go Back

Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Chelsea Hassler

I got my first Apple TV as a present; I was still working in television at the time, and my boss presented it to me as a (very, very generous) holiday gift. The supersleek, supermysterious object would quickly become something that I could not picture my life without. Not only did I use the second-generation device a lot for work, but it also meant that I no longer had to squint at my teeny-tiny laptop screen when I wanted to watch something on Netflix or Hulu, opening the floodgates of binge-watching that would remain constant for years to come. In the seven years that my Apple TV and I cohabitated together, I lived in three different boroughs of New York City, saw partners and friends come and go, and changed my career several times over. It was just in September of this year, 2017, that I tried its much, much younger sibling - the Apple TV 4K - and knew it was time to update my trusty partner in crime.

To be clear, I hadn't ever even considered upgrading my old device. It worked perfectly, so why would I bother? But when I unboxed the 4K and got it up and running, I realized the light years of tech I had been missing out on. Therefore my experience isn't one shaded by a side-by-side comparison, a judgment of what sets it above and beyond its competitors (or, for that matter, not). Instead, it's one of awe and wonder - and of falling back in love with TV all over again thanks to the help of a device that's roughly the size of a thick slice of bread.

Ahead, you'll find some of my favorite functions of the Apple TV 4K. And if you're in the market for a more thoughtful way to streamline all the many ways we get our entertainment these days and for things to be a little bit simpler in several of the most intuitive yet impossible ways, I promise you won't be disappointed by the Apple TV 4K.

The TV App

I'd always been curious about that "TV" app that appeared on my iPhone at some point over the last year, and as soon as I got started with iOS 11 and my new Apple TV, everything sort of just fell into place. It's basically where you can find everything you're looking for, all in one easy-to-find place. Once you've signed in with iOS 11, it pulls together all of your apps (like Hulu, Showtime, and HBO) and you can also add in your cable subscription to gain access to all of the programming on apps like CBS, The CW, and more. And once you watch something - or leave off halfway through an episode - it puts it in there for easy access to pick up exactly where you left off on any other Apple device.

For me, the best thing about this is the fact that it eliminates having to search for the latest episodes and where you can stream them - it puts them right in front of your face where you quite literally can't miss it, and you can essentially just live in the "watch now" section of Apple TV if you want to. For full instructions on how to set this up and get going, head on over to Apple to read more and know that I am not exaggerating when I say that it has eliminated hours of searching from my life and I couldn't be more stoked about it.

Siri

When I said that I wasn't looking to highlight specific features that are new only to this device, I was very much referring to Siri, who honestly blows my mind (even now!). A recent convert to voice control, it almost feels like Siri was made explicitly to make browsing more easy - and to make it so that when you lose the remote control, you've always got the ability to control your TV via your mouth. Siri can do lots of things, though, and isn't just limited to "pause" or "play."

You can ask Siri to find the most recent episode of a TV show or pick up where you left off on a movie. You can rewind a couple minutes or a couple seconds, or search through what's available in the massive libraries of the streaming giants for a specific moment in time that you just have to watch again. Say "What did they say?" and she'll skip back 15 seconds in time and throw some captions up on the screen for that scene. Ask her "Who stars in this?" and she'll give you an IMDB-style rundown on the bottom of your TV screen, no iPhone required! Oh, and if you're indecisive (like me), she can also tell you what to watch based on what Apple sees as trending at that moment in time.

4K and HDR

I'd be lying if I said that I could tell the difference between 4K and regular TV before I got the Apple TV. But I had the pleasure of hooking my box up to a real, legit 4K TV and all I can say is: holy sh*t. It's like being in an adventure that requires no glasses or special devices to traverse, and the colors are mindblowingly vivid. I'm almost - almost! - tempted to upgrade my old TV, but as the saying goes, I'm probably better taking one step at a time. And it can cost you a bit more money (Netflix has a "premium" plan that features 4K movies in all their glory), so it may not be for everyone. But if you do have a 4K TV, do yourself a favor and get an Apple TV. I promise it won't disappoint you. Even the screensaver that comes up when you've been idle too long has been upgraded to a beautiful, crystal-clear set of images that will leave you transfixed as you listen to music or talk on the phone.

And a Few More Things

Apple recently changed its movie rental period to a whopping 48 hours (!), which means that instead of only having a night to watch a movie, you can make a weekend out of it - and it makes the rental fee feel a lot better from where I stand. And when you don't feel like watching a movie, there's also a whole host of beautiful, addictive games that have been brought into the device, which means you can play the things you love most as well as a bunch of new TV-native apps via your tiny Apple remote (or, if you're fancy, via a control which you can purchase separately). I would be remiss if I didn't mention just how smoothly the interface works. No more loading screens and clunky click-throughs - everything about using the Apple TV feels crisper, snazzier, and, frankly, more enjoyable than ever before. And finally, one of the features I love the most: since the Apple ecosystem is so efficient, I don't have to get rid of my old Apple TV. Instead, I moved it into my bedroom, which means I can pick up exactly where I left off in the living room. It may be a whole lot more rickety, but it's the sign of true progress. Apple has clearly got one eye on making all of your devices, old and new, work together - and I couldn't be happier with the result so far.

Glossier's Latest Skin-Saving Product Is Here - and We Tried It First!

When POPSUGAR Beauty Director Lauren Levinson waved a millennial pink, bubble-wrapped bag in front of my face, offering to let me try out the new, top-secret Glossier product, I practically snatched it out of her perfectly manicured hands.

After having great skin while using the Super Pure Serum ($28) a few years back, I have been itching to try out more from the brand. With my new assignment, I embarked on a skin experiment with Glossier's latest skincare product: Glossier Solution ($24).

Solution is an "exfoliating skin perfector" that is formulated with three active ingredients - BHA, AHA, and PHA - to slough away rough skin and reveal a more even skin texture through chemical exfoliation. If those acronyms make your head hurt, don't worry - skin care can get really confusing. To refresh your memory, we're going to explain those three powerful ingredients one at a time.

AHA stands for alpha hydroxy acid, a chemical exfoliant used for dry skin and evening out skin texture. The most commonly used forms of AHA are glycolic and lactic acid, and Solution contains both within its gorgeous pink container. The lactic acid helps reduce acne while the glycolic acid breaks up dead skin cells to improve the texture of your skin.

The second exfoliating ingredient is BHA, which is short for beta hydroxy acid. It's also known to us regular folks as salicylic acid, that product you see advertised on every drugstore acne wash you've ever used. It works by exfoliating within pores to break up oil bonds attached to dead skin cells. Salicylic acid in low amounts (Solution only has 0.5 percent) not only reduces acne, but also evens out your skin's texture and can even soothe irritated skin.

PHA is the less commonly known ingredient polyhydroxy acid. PHA is similar to AHA, but has the ability to improve the skin's surface strength while exfoliating and conditioning your complexion.

With all of this exfoliation, you might be worried that this product could irritate your skin. Luckily, Glossier was smart enough to also include skin soothers like aloe, glycerin, and niacinamide to calm your skin while it exfoliates.

With these three powerful ingredients wrapped up in one pretty, baby-pink bottle, I was excited to start my new skincare journey with almost a full month to use the product ahead of the January launch. The liquid itself is the consistency of a toner product and has a bit of a strong alcohol-soap smell. Despite the scent, it was extremely gentle on my chapped skin. Solution comes in a bottle with a pump, making it spill-proof (important to a klutz like me) and more sanitary (germs can't get inside as easily!). To use the product, press down on the pump with a cotton pad and wipe across your face. After waiting for the liquid to absorb into your skin, follow up with moisturizer.

In a few days, I noticed a significant change in my skin. It was smoother, it had fewer flakes from the harsh Winter, and my skin was starting to look less dull. After a few weeks of using the liquid on Glossier's new Cotton Rounds ($4) (which, by the way, are ultrasoft and embossed with Glossier's G logo), I noticed that the blackheads around my nose had disappeared and I had fewer breakouts other than the hormonal bumps I get around my chin. A month later, my skin is mostly clear and seems (mostly) unaffected by the intense temperature fluctuations New York City has been experiencing.

I'm really glad to report that this product did not disappoint. All of the ingredients seem to have been put into the product with a purpose, and therefore it didn't irritate or dry out my skin. I would recommend this product to anyone with acne-prone, slightly oily skin who wants to see an improvement in their skin texture. If you're looking for a way to limit breakouts, it's about time to give in to the Glossier hype and test this new baby out.

Pale Girls Will Love These Superfair Highlighters

Strobing is the hottest trend in beauty right now, but even if you know how to DIY the technique, you may be feeling left out if you have pale skin - I know how that is. Mid- to darker-toned complexions look simply stunning with a shimmering highlight, but when I tried to re-create the look at home, that glimmer was undetectable on my pale skin. Don't worry, fellow pasty princesses! I scoured the market for the lightest illuminators. Not only will these show up, they will make your bone structure pop.

These Are the Exact Beauty Products Madelaine Petsch Wears as Cheryl on Riverdale

I watch Riverdale because I have the hots for Cole Sprouse, the plots are riveting (who the heck is Betty's brother?!), and gosh-dang is Madelaine Petsch gorgeous. The actress who plays Cheryl Blosson is the most exciting breakout beauty star I've seen in years. Whether I am obsessing about her perfect cherry-red lips and matching hair, or praying I can get my skin to look as poreless as hers, she compels my attention every time she comes on the screen.

To find out exactly which products she uses, I interviewed Riverdale's lead makeup artist, Erin Mackenzie. She shared the exact product lineup she uses on Madelaine for the show:

"Cheryl is a masterpiece!" she said. "We use an array of products to create her signature look, starting with NARS foundation and Tarte concealer with translucent powder to set. A combination of Lise Watier and It Cosmetics bronzers to sculpt and shape her face with MAC Blushbaby to give that perfect flush color. Lorac pro eye-shadow palette to naturally define her eyes with Benefit mascara to finish them off. MAC Strawberry blonde brow pencil to shape those great brows, and, of course, Lime Crime Red Velvet to create those PERFECT lips." (Sounds like Erin is an Ulta shopper.)

We also got into which products give Madelaine her porcelain skin.

"Madelaine is incredible with keeping her skincare regime on point, allowing us a great canvas to work off of," Erin said. "It's a must with the long shooting days and tons of travel she endures. And we swear by rose water spritzes throughout the day to refresh skin and awaken the senses. Can't live without it!"

Here at POPSUGAR, many editors have Mario Basescu Facial Spray With Aloe, Herbs and Rosewater on our desks - so we get it.

19 Simple Meal-Prep Combinations Anyone Can Do

Although Instagram's #mealprep gives us plenty of inspiration, some of the meals on there are pretty complex to throw together. When you don't have the time or energy, meal prepping can seem like a pain. But it doesn't have to be. We found some quick and simple combinations that beginners and experts alike can master in minutes. The trick is to toss together a protein and carb or carb and veggies, mixing it up so you'll never get bored of your lunch or dinner. Read on for some healthy recipes we swear anyone can master tonight.

The Biggest Misconception About Keto, Debunked By a Doctor

The keto diet is still hotly contested, but clinical nutritionist Dr. Josh Axe, DNM, DC, CNC chalks a lot of that up to one giant misconception: "It's not just butter and bacon."

Though it is a very high-fat diet (up to 80 percent of your calories come from fat!), Dr. Axe noted that most people don't understand how to eat healthy with that macronutrient distribution (and thus end up defaulting to butter and bacon).

While grass-fed butter is still a good fat source, he also recommends seeking healthy fats from natural sources like avocados and nuts. And while salad isn't the first thing to come to mind when you think "keto diet," Dr. Axe suggests "loading up on vegetables and water," while eating "some meat." He especially noted that vegetables, herbs, and greens are of the utmost importance, and are often neglected on the diet.

He told POPSUGAR that he emphasizes the importance of alkaline foods while in ketosis. "I have my clients on the ketogenic diet eat things like bone broth, mixes of veggie juice powder, or organic super green powder, veggies without sugar, celery, cucumber, spinach, turmeric . . . lots of cilantro and parsley. These are all really, really alkaline." This is to balance the acidity and the pH of your body while in ketosis so you can sustain the diet for a few months in a healthy way.

The Easy Eating Formula For Getting Rid of Body Fat

If you feel soft in the middle, you can either thank your mother for inheriting her blessed genetic predisposition for belly flab or your sweet kiddos who were created there. Whatever the reason, if you'd much rather have a sleeker midsection, as a mom of two, I can totally relate.

Although it's impossible to spot-reduce fat from specific areas, we've enlisted the help of Christmas Abbott, CrossFit competitor and author of The Badass Body Diet ($28), to help us ditch our pinch-more-than-an-inch tummies. As a formerly "skinny fat" woman who transformed her body through CrossFit and a dialed-in diet, Christmas understands how real women feel and also what they need to do to get the body they crave. "Food is your foundation, and fitness is the accessory," says Christmas. She believes that every meal and snack needs to embrace the macronutrient trifecta of proteins, carbs, and healthy fats to help reduce overall body fat, which will aid in reducing stubborn belly fat.

Christmas explains that all food can be categorized into a protein, a carbohydrate, or a fat. "You can't go wrong by dividing your plate into thirds and filling each section with a primo protein, primo carbohydrate, and primo fat." There are only two foods Christmas says to avoid - processed foods and alcohol - since these contribute to unwanted fat. If you want to know specifics about how many of each to eat, The Badass Body Diet outlines a diet plan based on your personal body type and goals.

What about exercise? Short, high-intensity training sessions are proven to help reduce belly fat faster than steady-state cardio. Below are some great examples of this type of workout.

And once the belly fat begins to dissolve, you'll want to reveal a carved, toned core with this 10-minute ab workout. Working out three times a week is great if you're starting out, then you can add additional days as your body becomes stronger. As a CrossFit competitor, Olympic lifter, and head trainer at CrossFit HQ, Christmas also makes a point that your workouts should be fun so you stick with them longer.

Regan Lost Almost 80 Pounds by Consistently Doing These 2 Things

Regan Patterson began her weight-loss journey in December 2015, but it wasn't a moment of epiphany like many others experience. "There was no defining or embarrassing moment that made me immediately want to lose weight," she told POPSUGAR. "It was a gradual feeling for me. I got fed up with feeling so insecure about my body and missing out on life events because of it."

At the start of her journey, Regan, 25, weighed 222 pounds. Adopting a sustainable approach, she lost 77 pounds over the course of two years. "I am proud of the time it has taken because realistically, these types of transformations don't happen overnight. It takes a lot of time, consistency, and dedication." Regan should know - she's now a personal trainer.

"I always tell my clients that small, baby lifestyle changes are the best way to start. It's hard to change your lifestyle 100-percent overnight," she said. That's exactly what Regan did, making small changes like adding more vegetables to her day and going to the gym a few days each week. She noted that these are all very realistic changes that anybody can make.

These little changes eventually kept adding up to bigger changes. "I have been doing Kayla Itsines's BBG workout program for 65 weeks now. I fell in love with how challenging it was and how I saw the changes not only physically in my body, but my performance in my workouts. I also love weightlifting so I add that into my regimen."

As far as Regan's diet goes, she counts calories and macros and has "a very flexible approach to 'dieting.' I hate the term 'diet' because my life isn't a diet, it's just my life! But I don't like to put any foods off limits because we as humans don't usually succeed with food limitations." She basically follows the 80/20 rule - 80 percent nutrient-dense foods and 20 percent treats. Regan said she's all about "everything in moderation! Losing weight doesn't have to be boring!"

Aside from dropping 77 pounds with BBG and following the 80/20 rule, Regan said, "My resting heart rate before I started my fitness journey was 88 beats per minute. It is now approximately 48-50 bpm. That means my heart has to work almost HALF as hard as it did before!" Talk about a life-changing nonscale victory!

Over the course of these past two years, Regan admitted, she wasn't always motivated. She said, "Motivation is a feeling. It comes and goes. I don't rely on motivation to keep me going. I am dedicated even when I'm not motivated!"

For anyone on their own weight-loss journey, Regan has one word of advice: patience. "That's one of the toughest parts of this whole thing. This is a journey that takes time, and everyone's journey is unique. Your journey will not be like anyone else's. Embrace it, and enjoy the ride. All your hard work will pay off!"

She wants to remind everyone that "this isn't just a physical weight-loss journey. You will also experience a mental transformation that is just as rewarding as the physical one. Don't give up on yourself. It's OK to fall, but it's not OK to stay there. Always get back up and try again!"

What It's Really Like to Lose Over 25 Pounds

By the middle of my sophomore year of college, I was in the worst physical shape of my life. A mix of drinking, the freedom to eat whatever and whenever I pleased, and my mom's cancer prognosis led to rapid weight gain and plummeting self-confidence. Every day I dragged myself to class wearing shapeless, oversize clothing and avoided eye contact with my peers - I was genuinely unhappy with my appearance. The weight wasn't just burdening my body; it was affecting my mind as well. I felt intense anxiety and self-consciousness, and social situations that I used to flourish in became intimidating and difficult to maneuver.

My rock bottom

One night when I was getting ready for a friend's birthday dinner, I realized the extent of my dissatisfaction. As I thumbed through my closet feeling uninspired by every article of clothing, I realized that style, something I had always cherished, no longer excited me. It felt out of reach. I was not comfortable with the body I was dressing, and that realization was enough for me to begin making major lifestyle changes immediately.

I first had to accept that losing weight wasn't going to be an easy task, and that was why it was going to be worth it. Working toward anything takes unwavering willpower, strength, and sacrifice: weight loss was no different. Once I decided I wanted to change, a game plan fell into place.

Step 1: I assessed my habits

I had always heard that weight loss was more about diet than exercise. In my case, this was more than true. I had been eating whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted, and as much as I wanted. My weakness was (and probably always will be) carbs, in all forms. I craved pasta, pizza, and bread of all sorts, much more than any indulgent dessert or treat. So, I knew for sure that this was an area that could use serious improvement. Since my mom has always commented on my unhealthy attraction to carbs, I confided in her about wanting to make a change and she helped me understand the difference between good and bad carbs. I hit the ground running and immediately cut out refined and processed carbohydrates, such as those found in the pasta and bread I loved, eating only carbs that were found naturally in fruits and vegetables. I knew I would be able to return to pasta someday, but for now it had to go.

Step 2: Apps that aided and recorded progress

Being a full-time student while balancing a social life, I definitely did not have access or the funds for guidance from a nutritionist, so, I did what any problem-solving millennial would do and I scavenged the app store for something that could help me instead. The app that kick-started and aided me immensely in my journey was MyFitnessPal. It taught me a lot about my body and what and how much I should be eating. What I found most useful was the ability to choose a target weight and the amount of time I wanted to take to reach the target weight. It was especially helpful in the beginning because I had no idea about intake and calories. Is 800 calories a lot for a meal? How many calories should I be eating a day? Is butter a carb? I also used KeepSafe, which is a camera roll protected by fingerprint and/or a custom passcode. For me, tracking my progress visually was incredibly important. I wanted to keep track of my weight loss through photos of myself in a sports bra and underwear so that I could easily observe the changes happening. That being said, I didn't want intimate photos of myself nearly naked living in my camera roll where a friend could easily stumble upon them.

Step 3: I skipped my diet sometimes

I remember beating myself up pretty harshly the first few times I broke the "no carb" rule I set for myself, but I quickly realized the significance of moderation. One meal, no matter how big or unhealthy, was probably not going to affect my weight as long as I was diligent and consistent with my diet the majority of the time. There was no reason to make myself feel as though I had failed for indulging. A bowl of gnocchi is something to celebrate!

Step 4: I found my place to sweat

I had always hated the gym and running, and intense anxiety tended to inhibit me from trying classes because I'm not completely in control of the situation. But, FINALLY, after a year and a half of healthy eating with no exercise, I forced myself to join a yoga studio. From the first time I went I was hooked. A tighter tummy was great, but a clear mind was even better.

Step 5: I mentally prepared myself for others' reactions

When someone loses weight, even a few pounds, people notice. So, after six months and over 20 pounds shed, people reacted. I wasn't heavy in a way that was threatening my health or well-being, so others questioned why I was trying to lose weight in the first place. I reassured my parents and close friends this was something positive and that I had everything under control, but everyone else was left to wonder. I found being genuine and kind was the best way to react to people's opinions, both good and bad . . . even though it was annoying.

Step 6: I became OK with never hitting my target weight

Yes, a scale was a good way to measure change in my body, but it wasn't the most important representation of my progress. It was much more about being comfortable in my own skin and dressing in clothes that made me happy. I did have a "goal weight" somewhat in my mind when I changed my lifestyle, but it dissipated from importance when I felt more confident and proud of my body, many pounds away from my original "goal." I never hit my goal weight, and if I ever do I probably won't know, because my scale has found a home in the trash can.

While I no longer use apps to track my diet, I am eternally grateful for how they helped me become the person I am today: a happy, healthy, self-confident yogi.

Prepare to Get Fizzy: Sparkling Everything Is THE Drink Trend of 2018

People love to sparkle, and I'm not just talking about swiping on extra highlighter. This year will be the year of sparkling everything in the world of drinks: from a surge of kombucha-like probiotic waters to an increased desire for guilty-pleasure "sodas" that are actually healthy, 2018 is all about getting fizzy. Perhaps the Kirakira craze has made its way to the food sphere - it's the edible version of the shimmer-and-glitter phenomenon, if you will. Or maybe it's just the fact that the word "sparkling" makes everything seem a little bit more fun, cold-brew coffee included (looking at you, Stumptown, which has debuted Honey Lemon Sparkling Cold Brew).

This year, we'll see more eye-catching sparkling waters on shelves than ever before; La Croix's comeback was only the beginning. Look out for Alta Palla, the brightly colored cans of sparkling waters and juices, at Whole Foods and Good Idea Drinks, the "Swedish sugar buster" that wants to help kick people's soda habits one Sparkling Orange Mango Water at a time.

If you're feeling adventurous, you might go for a pickle-flavored probiotic gut shot that tastes like garlicky pickle soda. Maybe you've thought about giving up coffee but still want the caffeine fix, and you'd be able to turn to Phocus, a Kentucky-based company that makes naturally caffeinated, calorie-free sparkling water (the secret is extractions from green tea leaves). Next-level machines will even translate the trend from stores for the masses to homes for the serious aficionados. Drinkmate can carbonate anything from lemonade to wine and will help satisfy seltzer cravings at a moment's notice.

Spark your interest (see what I did there?) by trying out some of the unique recipes ahead that put an unexpected fizzy twist on classics, like green tea "soda," homemade sparkling cold brew, and a bubbly fruit smoothie. Embracing sparkling everything is just one of the biggest trends of 2018.

If You Travel With a Support Animal, Take Note of Delta's Stricter New Guidelines

Following an increase in animal incidents and attacks over the past year, Delta Air Lines is updating its policy for customers traveling with service and support animals. Effective March 1, the new guidelines should be required reading for frequent Delta flyers with support animals.

In a press statement, Delta's Senior Vice President of Corporate Safety, Security, and Compliance John Laughter said, "The rise in serious incidents involving animals in flight leads us to believe that the lack of regulation in both health and training screening for these animals is creating unsafe conditions across US air travel."

The new guidelines state that all passengers with a service or support animal submit a health form or immunization record at least 48 hours before a flight. Passengers traveling with an emotional support animal, however, will also have to submit a confirmation of animal training and a separate form that includes a letter from a licensed mental health professional.

These stricter guidelines, Delta said, are to prevent untrained or aggressive pets from traveling without a kennel in the cabin. If the updated policy might apply to you or affect any of your travel plans, read all about the new requirements here.

Fresh Off the Runway: Alaska Airlines Unveils an Elevated New Collection of Employee Uniforms

Image Source: Courtesy of Alaska Airlines

With the Alaska Airlines and Virgin America merger in full swing, it was most necessary to give the brand a refresh, right down to the employee uniforms. On Thursday, Jan. 18, POPSUGAR joined the airline and 2,000 of its employees inside the Alaska Seattle-Tacoma hangar for the big reveal of their new branded ensembles. Seattle fashion designer Luly Yang teamed up with Alaska Airlines to custom design a whole new collection and unveiled over 90 garments and accessories on the runway - the fashion runway, that is.

It was a big day for Alaska Airlines, as it marked the first major brand refresh they've done in 25 years. So 38 airline employees, from maintenance technicians to pilots, modeled the gear themselves. Though airline employees last received new uniforms back in 2011, they didn't check all of the boxes when it came down to the style - and more importantly, functionality - of the everyday workwear. But after two years of surveying thousands of employees, conducting focus groups, and attending worksite visits, Yang seems to have really nailed this one. The result was a collection that was neither more Virgin America or more Alaska Airlines, but a fresh look that the new, united Alaska will be known for.

"It was a melding of the two to create this West Coast-modern vibe that's fresh and pops of color; nice energy that's classic yet modern," Sangita Woerner, Alaska Airlines' vice president of marketing, told POPSUGAR. "[Our uniforms] definitely needed to be more modernized, a little bit fresher, and better fitting, which I think Luly's done a fantastic job of doing."

As the model employees confidently showed off their new uniforms - which will continue to be wear-tested for the next 60 days before making final improvements - it was obvious which pieces were the crowd favorites. The navy, waterproof trench coats (to be worn by all employees) and the brown leather pilot jackets looked amazingly chic - so much so that I wanted to personally take them home after the show. But the one added feature that had the whole room roaring? Pockets. According to Woerner, one of the most demanded requests from employees were more pockets.

"What Luly did was she got down to that level of detail and was really smart about where she placed those pockets to make sure they were superusable," Woerner told us.

New pockets were incorporated into the design of each piece, including dresses, to fit larger devices, tools, pens, baggage tags, and other common items. Yang made sure that shirts stayed tucked when employees reached up (another popular comment), allowed enough stretch in the waistband for pilots to sit comfortably in the cockpit for long periods of time, and more. She truly thought of everything when it comes to utility, and it didn't hurt that the employees looked stylish, as well. Keeping everyone's feedback in mind was also one of the most difficult parts about designing this collection.

"The most challenging part was taking input from so many voices, so many opinions - they have 13 different work groups with different job functions, and we had to make that all work into a cohesive way," Yang told POPSUGAR.

A total of 130 employees have been wear-testing the line to make sure it's practical across jobs. In addition to making sure the uniforms looked fantastic, Alaska Airlines also partnered with Unisync and OEKO-TEX to ensure that every garment receives the highest certification in safety and quality.

After the show, I got to see and appreciate all the aforementioned details up close. I spoke with a few of the model employees, who unanimously shared that comfort, movement, and quality were brought through this collection. Air pilot Sara Zieske loved the fact that she'd be able to sport a scarf instead of a tie, while flight attendant Justin Fitzgerald enjoyed how "comfortable and stylish" his uniform was.

Though all 19,000 Alaska Airlines, Virgin America, and Horizon Air employees won't be fully suited up in their new gear until the end of 2019, Alaska is keeping busy with plenty of other updates in the interim. Within the next two years, the airline is aiming to really step up their brand presence and take over California in addition to the already secured Pacific Northwest region.

"I think the next major milestone will be when we hit this threshold level of awareness and preference up and down the West Coast," Woerner told us. "Once people know who Alaska is, understand why we're different than other carriers out there, and they start to know that we're about service, we're about great fares and great value, and we have this West Coast vibe - if we can land that in the next couple years, that'll be the milestone.

The 1 Problem With Traveling With a Toddler That Took Me by Total Surprise

Before venturing on my first flight with my 2 1/2-year-old son, I had a lot of concerns. My overactive brain thought about every problem that could likely occur . . . except for the one that actually did. Sure, having a toddler scream and kick on a plane would have been awful, but having him struggle through the time change was worse. Instead of this hurdle being over in a few short hours, it lasted days.

Two hours to an adult really isn't a big deal, but to a highly regimented toddler, it was something that, in hindsight, I shouldn't have underestimated. For days he was taking naps at the wrong time and for the wrong length, eating at odd hours, and waking far too early. All of these little changes made for a grumpy, exhausted, and overstimulated child. This, of course, meant I was also all of those things.

Sure, eventually he acclimated, but not without some strong compromises. A lot of time was wasted on our vacation because of missteps along the way. Knowing what I know now, there are some things I will be more mindful of in the future and one thing we did right.

  • Heading east is not the same as heading west. On a previous road trip to New York, we didn't concern ourselves too much with the time change since he was going to be expected to stay up later than usual. However, for a child who has a strict schedule, staying up two hours later was huge. Be aware that you're asking a lot from them, and there will be an adjustment period.
  • Be outside and active as much as possible. Since their rhythm is going to be off, it's best to get them exposed to as much sunlight as possible. Let them see that it's daylight and that life continues as normal, just in a new place. Additionally, keep them as active as possible so that they're not aware of how tired they are.
  • Make car trips short. My son loves to nap in his car seat, and while that was great on the plane, it made getting him adjusted to the time change difficult. We'd get in the car to go to the children's museum and he'd fall asleep by the time we got there, thus ruining his naps.
  • Bring snacks, but keep meal times consistent. He was ready for lunch at 10 a.m., despite having just eaten an impressively large breakfast. By trying to feed him his meals when he was hungry, I kept resetting his natural clock. Instead of trying to accommodate his insatiable appetite, I should have given him snacks to keep the hunger at bay and then focused on a proper lunch at a regular time.
  • Be flexible, and think incrementally. My son's usual bedtime is 7:30 p.m., meaning that on our trip to the West Coast, he was going to want to sleep around 5:30 p.m. Since this would mean getting up at 5 a.m., which I obviously didn't want to do, I had to work his schedule incrementally. While I would have loved for him to go to bed at his normal time, this would have made for an overtired toddler. We compromised in the middle, and he was passed out around 6:30 p.m. In a couple days, we were able to move his bedtime back to his normal schedule. This was one way we were successful in dealing with the time change. When we travel again, I'll be sure to implement this strategy.

See the Over-the-Top Perks of an Emirates Airline Business-Class Flight

I'm not usually one to travel in what you'd call "luxury." I'm a bargain-hunting adventurer who picks the cheapest seat on the plane and who is happy as long as there's a bed to fall into at the end of the day. Or a hammock. Or a sleeping bag. However, that doesn't mean I can't appreciate or, in fact, immensely enjoy it when an extravagant opportunity presents itself. Enter: Emirates business class. The airline is known for being one of the best in the world- and it truly lives up to that status, from its impeccable customer service to its top-of-the-line planes, particularly the business- and first-class sections.

On my recent trip to Thailand with Pandora Jewelry for the opening of a new crafting facility, I was able to experience the palatial features of Emirates business class. I flew from Bangkok, Thailand, to Dubai, UAE; had a layover in Dubai; and then flew Dubai to LA - both legs of the flight (one seven-hour and one 17-hour) were in Emirates business. With large big-screen TVs, personal minibars, full meals and drinks available the entire flight, and so many movie and TV options I couldn't keep count, the flight was a far cry from your average trip - and I loved it.

In addition to the regular perks of flying business class, like priority check-in, a fast pass through security, access to airport lounges, and included food and beverages, Emirates (especially Emirates Airbus 380) offers a unique level of luxury you'll be hard-pressed to find with many other airlines. From an actual lounge on board the plane to seats that recline fully flat, touchscreen technology, and gourmet dining, it's an experience that's worth having (at least once in a lifetime) if you're in the mood to majorly splurge. The downside is that this glamorous method of travel costs well above your average ticket price and can end up costing more than your trip itself. Take a look at the over-the-top features of Emirates business class.

Heartbreak Is on Display at the Museum of Broken Relationships

For as long as there's been love in the world, there's been love lost. And when love ends, what do we do with the mementos from relationships that once represented something beautiful but now are like tokens of heartbreak? The Museum of Broken Relationships in Zagreb, Croatia, and the newer outpost of the same name in Hollywood, CA, are a collection of more than 700 such items from all over the world, representing relationships past, along with the stories of heartbreak or redemption that accompany them.

The collection includes items one might expect: wedding dresses, once-cherished mix tapes, and photo albums. But it's the unique items that steal the show: a small bottle filled with tears, an ax used to smash the furniture, a never-opened bottle of Champagne, the prosthetic leg of a war veteran who fell in love with his therapist, and a pair of size double-zero jeans once owned by a woman recovering from anorexia after an abusive relationship. The museum sees the donations as cathartic, founders said. "[It] offers the chance to overcome an emotional collapse through creativity," a museum representative said.

Read on to see five moving stories, all courtesy of the Museum of Broken Relationships, that accompany different items that once held a significant meaning for the people who donated them to the museum.
