The 10 Best Places to Go For Moms Who Want to Vacation All by Themselves

I was kayaking around Anacapa Island off the coast of Ventura, CA. The setting was stunning, but I was more focused on what - or rather, who - wasn't there: my 2-year-old daughter, Lucy, who was over 3,000 miles away in New Jersey with her babysitter. I felt guilty when I initially decided to go on the trip, but there was no way I could say no. I had always wanted to visit, and while the islands are family friendly, I knew Lucy wouldn't be up for things like hiking or kayaking. Besides, I didn't want to take the trip for her. I wanted to take the trip for myself.

I'm a single mom, and I don't have family nearby. That meant I needed to hire a babysitter for three days. I went back and forth about going a ridiculous number of times, but as I sat on the water, the waves lapping at my kayak, I was so thankful. Sure, I missed Lucy, but I hadn't realized how much I had missed myself. I hadn't kayaked since well before she was born, even though I used to lead kayak expeditions when I was in college. I had missed allowing my thoughts to unfold without interruption. I had missed letting myself set the schedule.

When I came back, I felt happy to see Lucy and happy in my own skin. I felt more energized, more relaxed, and absolutely certain that a solo mom trip isn't bad - it's wonderful. To be totally honestly, I think that alone time made me a better parent. It made me more aware of my own needs, more appreciative of the bond Lucy and I have, and thankful that the "old" me is still there. And I can't wait to plan another trip, so if you're also in need of a little getaway, keep reading for 10 of the best places you can travel to - all by yourself.

Flight Attendant Goes Out of Her Way to Soothe a Crying Toddler, Reminds Us Good People Exist

A flight attendant on a Hawaiian Airlines flight to LAX left a mom traveling without her kids in awe, her faith in humanity completely restored. Because Rachel Yuen Nihi and her husband, Jared, were flying solo, the couple joked about all their kids' things they didn't have to lug around the airport, lamented over the fact that they couldn't preboard without their little ones, and began to take note of all the families that were on their flight, preplanning ways they could help their fellow parents if need be.

That's when Rachel noticed a mom traveling alone with her three kids - who all seemed to be under the age of 5 - trying to soothe her youngest child, who was inconsolable.

"I watched her turn into an acrobat, trying to soothe her crying toddler, tossing and turning. Trying to find a position to make him comfortable," Rachel wrote in a post on Facebook. "She paced the aisles back and forth and nothing could calm him down. A couple in front of her kept turning around; giving her a stink eye. As if she was purposely trying to inconvenience them. I watched the woman in front turn around and snicker something at her children and all I could think of was 'you wait until this seat belt sign comes off . . .' Jared could tell I was getting frustrated. Not at the child screaming. Not even at the mom. But irritated that people could see a mother desperately trying to soothe her child and still lack empathy."

Right as Rachel was about to get out of her seat to help the struggling mother, one of the flight attendants walked over and asked to hold the woman's son. Although Rachel noticed that the mom seemed hesitant and a bit embarrassed, the toddler had been crying for over 45 minutes at that point and nothing was working - so when the toddler reached up to the flight attendant, she scooped him up and immediately began to rock him in her arms until he finally stopped crying.

"This is true Aloha spirit," Rachel wrote. "Hawaiian Airlines, you should be proud of the people you hire who go beyond the call of duty and remind the world that kindness isn't all that uncommon . . . To that flight attendant, thank you for your kindness. It was noticed all around that flight. You gave a mother a moment to breathe and you have no idea how priceless this was for everyone around to see."

13 Beauty Problems Only Half-Asian, Half-Caucasian Women Will Understand

Growing up as hapa - meaning "mixed race" in Hawaii and half-Asian, half-white in my circles - comes with its own set of problems. I'm not just talking about when I had to check "other" under the race box during standardized tests: I'm talking about beauty problems. There are many misconceptions when it comes to being hapa, and I'm here to set the record straight.

A little background: my father is Chinese, and my mother is Irish, and I've found it difficult to find the balance between being too white and too Asian. There were only about five Asians in my entire graduating high school class, and because of the lack of diversity, I thought you had to be blond and Caucasian to be beautiful. When I got to college, Asian students made up about 40 percent of the student population. Although it was great to see more diversity on campus, I didn't feel like I fit in with that cultural group either. After a lot of soul (and family-tree) searching, I really started to embrace being biracial. How lucky am I that I get to feel connected to both my Chinese and Irish side?

Even though I'm so grateful that I get the best of both worlds, there are still day-to-day annoyances, from finding the right makeup to having strangers tell you the most absurd and ignorant things. I'm sure you can relate to at least one of these beauty struggles.

They offer affordable options that are incredibly effective. Take a look and unwind with one of these rejuvenating game changers.

Kiehl's Is Launching Its First-Ever Sheet Mask, and Our Faces Are READY!

Kiehl's looks pretty f*cking great for being 167 years old. (Must be all that Creme de Corps.) During its long life, the brand has released everything from moisturizer to hand cream, but there's one product it surprisingly hasn't dropped until now.

Kiehl's Instant Renewal Concentrate Mask ($32 for four) is the brand's first-ever sheet mask. Yup, the beauty community's masking obsession has become so ubiquitous that this legendary brand decided to get in on the action.

This sheet mask features cold-pressed Amazonian oils to provide a hydrating jolt when your face gets stressed out. The oils in question are copaiba, which smooths and softens; pracaxi, which conditions; and andiroba, which is rich in omega-6 fatty acids to plump and brighten. It's a two-piece mask, with one sheet made for your T-zone and another to cover your cheeks and the space around your mouth.

So: are you hosting the next masking movie night, or shall we?

25 Old-School Tattoos That Are Just F*cking Cool

If you love classic cartoons (think Popeye), consider going old school for your next tattoo! Traditional tattoos are generally characterized by bold jewel tones and thick, black lines, and while artists can create tattoos of all topics in the old-school style, this type of tattoo usually celebrates nautical themes (anchors, lighthouses, mermaids), hearts, pinup girls, daggers, roses, and any combination. You know that stereotypical "MOM" sleeve tat? That's old school. Here are some great examples to inspire your next ink!

I Tried an Armpit Moisturizer, and It's the Only Thing That Can Stop My Pesky Ingrowns

Some people like to show off pictures of their kids or dogs; I feel the same way about whipping out my armpits. Whether I've just rubbed detox mask under my arms or tried a new deodorant pen, I am known to talk about my pits with the enthusiasm of a roving Bible salesman. Due to my efforts in reforming my musky ways, I've managed to quell a lifelong sweating problem. The final frontier in my armpit transformation? Two words, which I hate only slightly less than my most loathsome phrase ("You up?"): ingrown hairs.

After one glorious Winter where I had zero reason to wear anything other than four sweaters at one time, Spring came. Slowly but surely, my layers are coming off - and with those, I prefer to remove the hair under my pits, too. (But if you don't, rock on!) But my skin must have gone to Oberlin and counted Sylvia Plath among its favorite authors, because it is sensitive, y'all. As soon as I bust out the razor, the ingrowns are bound to follow.

So when I had the chance to test out an "armpit moisturizer," I - and the dozens of little bumps that graced my underarms - jumped on it. This opportunity came courtesy of the new Crystal Invisible Solid Deodorant Sticks ($8), which just launched. In addition to acting as a natural essential-oil-infused deodorant that absorbs wetness, it boasts a lotion-esque consistency that hydrates and treats skin.

As soon as I swiped the deo against my body, I knew it was going to be a kickass (er, kick-pit) moisturizer. It felt so luxe that I almost felt like rubbing it all over my dehydrated face, too. It was super creamy, so I was a little nervous about it leaving white streaks. In response to my concerns, I put on an all-black ensemble, because my life's motto is, "If you're going to do something, you might as well do it in a way that will give you deodorant stains."

Luckily, no such thing happened. I tried the Lavender and White Tea option, which is just one in a lineup that includes Vanilla Jasmine with Chamomile and Unscented. I got a whiff of all the scents, and truth be told, each one sort of just smells generically "clean" - think fresh laundry - so even if you're sensitive, I don't think you'll have a problem with these puppies.

After wearing this for just a day, I was satisfied with how it stopped me from being a sweaty mess. It took about a week and a half for me to notice my ingrowns subside. My skin feels smoother and sleeker, and I would have no problem with someone gently rubbing their hand over my pits, should I encounter anyone who is into that sort of thing. Your move, strapless dresses.

After Trying This Cult Favorite, I Threw Away All My Other Lip Balms

Some people have chapped lips in the Winter - I have chapped lips year-round. The unwelcome dryness is the one lingering side effect (not counting my blemish-free skin) from my six months on Accutane years ago. It's a small problem to have, but man does it bother me. I have tried dozens of lip products, from traditional balms to medicated ointments. Recently, I even bought a highly rated, specialized lip peel from Amazon. That one worked to temporarily soften my lips, but everything else just seemed to make the dryness worse.

Then I found Glossier Balm Dotcom.

My trendy coworkers had been using Glossier for years, but despite the features on POPSUGAR, I hadn't tried anything from the brand - not the cult-favorite Boy Brow, not the Hero Duo that everyone had been raving about, and not the Balm Dotcom that I was certain wouldn't work for my chronically dry lips.

After seeing the product pop up on so many "best of" lists - minty lip products, best balms, chapped lip cures, even best gifts for men - I whipped out my credit card.

You can buy the glosses individually for $12 or get a bundle of three for $30. I opted for the trio because, frankly, it was too hard to decide among the flavors: Original, Birthday, Rose, Cherry, Mint, and Coconut. Each promised to moisturize, but some had added benefits like a tingling sensation (Mint), a subtle shimmer (Birthday), or a deep red tint (Cherry). I went with Cherry, Mint, and Coconut (because I love tasting like a tropical vacation in the Winter).

My package arrived a week later. I ripped the balm out of Glossier's signature pink pouch, slathered it over my parched pucker, and waited. The balm itself is waxy and reminded me of my mom's heavy-duty Mary Kay Extra Emollient Night Cream. Whereas most products I've tried just sit on my lips and eventually make them even drier, the Balm Dotcom soothed my skin, and within minutes they felt healthier. For once, advertising promises came true for me!

Billed as a "universal skin salve," the balm is multipurpose (meaning you can squeeze some out and put it on your cracking elbows), and it deeply hydrates, thanks to antioxidants and natural emollients. It's dense and definitely doesn't have a high-gloss finish, so if that's what you're looking for, move along. The shades (especially Cherry) are flattering without screaming, "I HAVE LIPSTICK ON," they all taste juicy as hell, and, best of all, the product actually works.

I was so happy with the results that I cleared out my balm box, where I'd been hoarding products that kinda, sorta helped my dry lips. After my dog ate the Cherry (devastating true story) and I immediately misplaced the Coconut, I ordered another trio to spread around my car, purse, and bedside table. My lips feel more hydrated overall, and now I just use the balm because I love the dense texture and the flavors. It's great for daily use, and I'll layer it on top of lipstick if I'm feeling fancy.

If you're at the end of your rope, looking for something that will actually help your chapped lips, I can't recommend Balm Dotcom more. It's the only product that worked for me, and it might just work for you, too.

This $3 Hair Brush Is Going Viral on Amazon - Find Out Why Customers Are Obsessed

Finding a good hair brush can be difficult; many of the quality options are quite expensive. That's why we were excited to hear about an affordable choice that's currently a bestseller on Amazon. Customers are loving this Conair Velvet Touch Hair Brush ($3). It currently has over 1,300 reviews, and 65 percent of buyers give it five stars.

So what makes this product so special? For starters, the handle has a soft, velvety texture that allows you to get a good grip. The ball-tip bristles on the brush will detangle your strands without snagging or pulling at them. It works for wet and dry hair, so you can use it whenever you want. The biggest plus is that it's effective while being gentle, so brushing your hair isn't a big pain.

"I spent over four decades trying brushes for my super fine, thin, and long hair that do not tear my few precious strands," one reviewer said. "Who would have thought that an inexpensive brush would work better than all the others? When I awaken my hair is a jumbled mess. With this Conair brush I did not feel one tug. It is amazing! I'm ordering another one."

This Ikea Hack For Families Who Cosleep Is Truly Genius

If your kiddos are the type to wake up in the middle of the night and crawl into your bed, or you got sick of that and already started cosleeping so that everyone can get some shut-eye, this incredible Ikea hack may just be the solution to making sure everyone's limbs are kept to themselves while still having the security of all being together in one bed.

Mama and professional photographer, Elizabeth Boyce, has six kiddos - five of which are under 11 years old - and when sleeping in one bed with toddlers and tripping over older kids on the floor in the middle of the night got to be a bit much, she used her craftiness and some materials she already had to create this cosleeping masterpiece from a couple of Ikea Kura beds and a ton of comfy mattresses.

Elizabeth shared the steps to creating this bed that has room for two grown adults and five children on her blog, but really, the setup was simple. She used the two Kura beds to create pseudo bunk beds for her four middle kiddos, and placed a giant king-size mattress in the middle for her and her husband, and their youngest, Elijah.

So far everyone is loving the bed - the idea was to give everyone enough space to sleep better, and it seems to be working out well for them. Though the bed is one cohesive unit, each child has their own space to sleep with their stuffed animals and pillows, and Elizabeth says, "They are staying in their own beds, which is a miracle!"

This is the bed every cosleeping family didn't even know they needed. Send your thank you notes to Elizabeth, because she is a true genius.

To see where everyone sleeps and how they make it all work, see the photo below.

You'll Never Want to Get Off the Pot Once You Try This Heated Toilet Seat From Amazon

My apartment doesn't have a heater, so needless to say, my morning bathroom stop is pretty chilly. Recently, my toilet seat was in desperate need of a replacement, so my roommates and I decided check out our options on Amazon and discovered this Brondell LumaWarm Heated Nightlight Toilet Seat ($109). We were so excited about the idea of being able to afford what felt like a luxury item, so, without hesitation, we ordered it.

It comes in two sizes, elongated and round, which was a foreign concept to me, but after a quick Google search, I learned that toilets are, in fact, made in two different shapes and you can figure out which one you have by measuring the length of your current seat.

We were excited when it arrived within just a few days, and it was easy to install - all we needed was a screwdriver. In order for it to work, we made sure we had an outlet close to the toilet because it is powered by plugging into the wall. It features three different heat settings and even a blue nightlight.

We instantly fell in love with it. Sitting on a regular toilet just doesn't feel the same anymore. The price tag was totally worth it.

Chris shared that her perch on his back actually helps keep India nearby so she can share some inspiration or even a little criticism with him while he rides (he was joking, of course).

Chris and his wife, Elsa Pataky, are no strangers to sharing the cutest snaps of India and her two younger brothers, Tristan and Sasha. Keep reading to see more sweet snaps from the family's time together, then reminisce over Chris and Elsa's swoon-worthy relationship.

The 1 Thing You Should ALWAYS Buy at Trader Joe's Only Costs 99 Cents

Every Trader Joe's shopper has their staples. Personally, mine are hatch chile mac and cheese, rose water facial toner, and frozen apple blossoms, not to mention the fixings for my favorite TJ's dinner hack, lentil salad. But during a recent Trader Joe's blog scan (which I do every weekend before my grocery shopping), I noticed a major theme: people are freakin' obsessed with TJ's greeting cards.

The cards, which come in a variety of supercute prints and messages, are always 99 cents - that means no unexpectedly paying $8 for a loved one's birthday card and thinking "how is paper this expensive?!" Trader Joe's also collaborates with artists to roll out new designs regularly, so you won't make your way through the same five Mother's Day cards every year and come up short.

Who'd have guessed that the one thing you should always grab at Trader Joe's isn't even food? Check out some examples of the lovely 99 cent cards ahead, then read up on the grocery chain's other must-buy staples.

This Teacher's Inspiring GoFundMe Helps Underprivileged Kids Experience the Joy They Deserve

Former first-grade teacher Katie Blomquist is on a mission to provide kids with the most basic right: joy. She started a fundraiser to give bikes to students in need, and it's quickly evolved into an inspiring nonprofit called Going Places. Katie set up a GoFundMe in 2016 and raised a whopping $80,000 after she realized many of her Title 1 students in North Charleston, SC, had never ridden a bike and probably wouldn't get the chance to own one. She was able to buy new bikes (plus locks and helmets) for all 650 students at her low-income, high-poverty elementary school. That campaign is over, but her fundraising is still going strong.

In fact, Katie stepped away from teaching in order to focus on being the executive director of Going Places. "A bike provides these children with a sense of freedom, escape, and a way to decompress. A bike also provides to these kids with a sense of childhood and innocence when, in many situations, that's been taken from them," Katie explains in her nonprofit's bio. In a more recent GoFundMe called Spreading Joy With a Bike, Katie and her supporters are continuing to raise funds and are working toward a $40,000 goal to provide bikes to students at a different South Carolina elementary school in May.

Watch the inspiring video above to hear about how Katie founded Going Places in her own words, and then keep reading to see heartwarming photos of the kids in action. "A bike is one of many things that represents joy" during childhood, she says. The delighted looks on the kids' faces say it all!

We're Rooting For the Author of a Brutally Honest Yelp Review, and the Reason Will Surprise You

Matthew Goodyear admits he's not one for posting Yelp reviews each and every time he eats out, but after a morning of serious self-reflection, he knew it was time for his first post. After the 27-year-old finally realized that he was losing an ongoing battle with alcohol, he decided to open up about his struggle in a brutally honest Yelp review of a little place called Pignone's Café.

"I realized that Oct. 23, 2017 was Day 1 of my sobriety. I am an alcoholic and an addict, and I finally accepted those two things while I was sitting at the corner table of this café at 6 a.m. hungover with a five-hour car ride ahead of me. Step 1 of the 12 Step Program is acceptance. It was in this place that I finally accepted what I am. I can finally move on with my life and deal with my issues. I will be OK. Eventually," he wrote.

Those who struggle with alcoholism know just how vicious of a cycle it can be. You drink to blow off steam or simply to forget the embarrassing things you did or said the last time you were drunk - and that's when it really gets messy. Goodyear explained just how bad it can get: "I hit rock bottom for the first time in NYC in October 2013. Then I hit a new low, my current rock bottom, last October. It was scary. Still is, actually. Massive panic attack. Couldn't sleep for four straight days. It was brutal. That made me turn to drinking even [more.] That's not the solution to anyone's problems. Certainly not any of mine."

He also reminded readers that alcoholism and addiction affect way more lives than just the person drinking:

[October is my mom's] favorite month for many reasons. Least of which is probably the fact she was born then. Anyway, her new favorite reason to love October can be because it is when I finally stopped drinking. She has wanted me to stop for a long time. Longer than anyone else. Forever, really. She didn't want me to start. It runs in the family, on both sides, with both of my parents, unfortunately. Neither of them are, but it's a slippery slope. I slipped immediately. Sophomore year of high school. I liked it way too much, right away. Being a beer pong beast didn't help, but it always turned me into an animal. That's not how I will act moving forward. That is a very good thing.

Other than detailing the challenges many people are too afraid to admit they deal with each and every day, Goodyear had some practical advice for anyone who plans to visit Pignone's Café: "The people are nice, and most importantly, the food is great . . . Two thumbs up, five stars, whatever. Go to this place. Support their business. They take plastic, and there is a Bank of America right next to it. I went to the ATM so I could leave a 100 percent tip on my meal. I am not bragging. I am also not rich. Not even close. But they deserved it. Perfection."

Talk about an honest review.

This Black Hole GIF Is Utterly Mesmerizing

This might be just a simulation of two merging black holes, but it's still insane to look at. Uploaded on Reddit, the GIF made it to the front page and has collected more than 1,000 comments so far.

But as a commenter pointed out, it's actually the work of SXS, or Simulating eXtreme Spacetimes. This group of researchers from Caltech and Cornell University simulate extreme space times to better understand physics in the cosmos. They also produced a paper about the project called "What would a binary black hole merger look like?" and an accompanying video.

What, exactly, would happen if two black holes collided? They would probably merge to become one bigger black hole, but it would be extremely violent, producing enormous amounts of energy and sending gigantic ripples through the universe called gravitational waves. Amazing.

The Bumble Dating App Just Banned Photos With Guns in Them

Organizations across the country have been addressing gun violence in their own ways in recent days, and now Bumble is stepping up to the plate. The company that created the popular dating app, which was built "with safety in mind," announced March 5 that they would be banning guns across all platforms.

Bumble began originally as a dating app designed to flip gender dynamics on their head by giving women the power to make the first move. It has since evolved into a networking platform to help people find new friends and even career opportunities in addition to romantic partners.

"We just want to create a community where people feel at ease, where they do not feel threatened, and we just don't see guns fitting into that equation," Whitney Wolfe Herd, Bumble's founder and chief executive, told The New York Times. She also acknowledged that most gun owners are "hobbyists" and don't support gun violence, noting that the issue is "not super black and white." However, rather than simply ignore it, Bumble is doing something about it. The new policy will mean that existing and new gun-related content will be removed. Some other weapons, like knives, will also be censored. The release states:

Bumble was founded with safety in mind. From the start, our mission has been to build a social network rooted in respect and kindness. Online behavior can both mirror and predict how people treat each other in the real world. Bumble has a responsibility to our users and a larger goal to encourage accountability offline.

In the past, when we've had an opportunity to make our platform safer, we've taken action, banning hate speech and inappropriate sexual content from the Bumble app. As mass shootings continue to devastate communities across the country, it's time to state unequivocally that gun violence is not in line with our values, nor do these weapons belong on Bumble.

From today on, we will begin the process of moderating all new and previously uploaded photos for the presence of guns. Our terms and conditions will be updated to reflect this decision.

Bumble's statement announcing banned gun content also noted that the new restrictions will exclude "users in military or law enforcement in uniform." Furthermore, Bumble pledged to make a $100,000 donation to March For Our Lives, an initiative founded in the wake of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL, which was started and led by students across the country seeking to address the issue of gun violence.

The Viral Story of an Abandoned Dog Found in a Garbage Bag Will Make Your Heart Cry

Malissa Sergent Lewis was driving through her hometown of Harlan, KY, when she noticed a black garbage bag moving along the side of the road. Curious, Lewis went to inspect the bag only to find an abandoned puppy inside of it. Though the puppy had a collar, it didn't have a tag.

In an interview with The Dodo, Lewis explained the unexpected and horrifying discovery. "I could hardly wrap my mind around that," she said. "Something was alive in that bag, and I just knew I had to get whatever it was out." As one might imagine, the dog was relieved to be found. "As soon as I opened it up, and he saw light, he just started wagging his tail. He knew he was OK," she said.

Lewis has yet to figure out the circumstances surrounding the dog's abandonment, but investigators are reportedly looking into it. Lewis did share the miraculous story on Facebook in a series of videos that have gone viral with close to 20,000 shares. Accompanying the videos is a caption that states, "If this is your puppy, let me know. If you are the scoundrel who put it in a garbage bag and tossed it on the side of the road . . . you're a sicko."

Lewis is currently trying to find a permanent home for the dog, but she will continue to foster it until that happens. Perhaps one of those 900,000 viewers might be interested?

Their Oh-So-Wise Souls and 8 Other Reasons to Love Rescue Dogs

I'll admit it: I'm biased. I know that pretty much every human thinks their dog is the best, regardless of where they got it. But after bringing my pup, Pancho, home from Colombia (which is another story), I'm convinced he actually is the best! Don't get me wrong - I don't have anything against purebreds; I grew up with Dachshunds. But Pancho has shown me just how awesome rescue dogs are, too!

For starters, there's the whole overpopulation issue: 3.9 million dogs enter shelters every year and, tragically, 1.2 million are euthanized. Those numbers truly break my heart. So when you rescue, you really are doing a good deed for the greater canine community. Secondly, they tend to come with a history, which I think makes them more unique. Of course, that history often comes with a set of behavioral traits that may need a bit of retraining. But these things tend to be true, regardless.

1. They appreciate the finer things in life

Let me tell you, Pancho does not take a dog bed for granted. Never mind my high-thread-count sheets. I can tell by the way he takes over my bed and rests his head on my pillow . . . or any soft surface, for that matter - a couch, chair, pile of clothes. God forbid he sleeps on the floor!

2. They're healthier

Because rescues tend to be mutts, they come from a more diversified gene pool, so they're less prone to certain breed-specific health problems (like labs are prone to hip dysplasia.) That means fewer vet visits and bills!

3. They have street smarts

I never worry about Pancho walking down the sidewalks of New York City; I know what he encountered on the streets of Colombia. He even looks both ways before crossing the street! And I have a feeling he could find food if he really needed to (he remembers where he hides his bones!).

4. They're not picky

Speaking of eating, rescue dogs generally aren't finicky when it comes to food. Pancho will literally eat out of the trash. But that doesn't mean I don't want to feed him the best - it's largely why I started a company that delivers healthy meals for dogs. He's not complaining!

5. They're wise souls

Pancho has seen a thing or two in this big, bad world we live in. And I can see it in his eyes - there's a certain sensitivity and soulfulness when he stares back at me. I swear he knows how I'm feeling and when I need a snuggle.

6. They know their boundaries

I honestly don't know if it's true for all rescue dogs, but it definitely is for Pancho: he's very respectful of other dogs' things. If there's another bowl of food on the floor that doesn't belong to him, he won't touch it!

7. They're easy to house-train

Assuming you don't rescue a puppy, this is 100 percent true. Yes, puppies are adorable (and see my point about being attached below . . . you don't need a puppy to create a strong bond!), but it took me all of a week to house-train Pancho, who was probably close to a year when I brought him home. Almost no accidents!

8. They're more attached

Would you leave the side of someone who rescued you? Exactly. Pancho follows me around pretty much everywhere I go. I never have to worry about him running away, that's for sure.

9. They will love you forever

Now this is 1,000 percent true. There is no limit to the love a rescue dog will give you. They are infinitely grateful for the human who has taken them in, and they will express that gratitude in the form of endless licks and tail wagging.

The $80 Area Rug That Made Me Forget I Hate My Ugly Brown Carpet

I live in a rent-controlled apartment in San Francisco, which is basically the equivalent of winning the lottery, and while I want to say I'm lucky for finding the unit, sometimes my carpet makes me think otherwise. My landlord hasn't updated a single fixture or appliance since, like, the '90s (even the fridge), and the apartment is covered in dirty brown carpet that has become so matted throughout the years that I wouldn't dare walk on it without socks or slippers. In addition, all of my walls are a very nonappealing dark beige that hurts to look at. It's worth it because the rent is cheap.

This year, I've been on a mission to debrown my space and make it feel cleaner by investing in a some new pieces. I purchased some cool wall art and covered my also brown sofa in fluffy blankets, but the one thing I spent forever looking for was the perfect area rug.

I searched numerous places both in person and online. I felt like all the colors and patterns I saw would make my space look even darker or more cluttered. I always caught myself eyeing white rugs, but thought, "No, that's crazy - I can't have a white rug".

Once day while browsing on Amazon, I came across this ivory Safavieh California Shag ($81) and it caught my eye. I decided to give it a try because it was affordable and I knew I could return it if I had to.

After getting it delivered to my front door within just a few days, I was instantly impressed by the quality. It's thick, fluffy, soft, and, most importantly, bright. Within seconds, my living room felt like a whole new space. The light from my bay windows reflected perfectly onto the fuzzy surface to create a fresh new feel.

The upkeep has been much easier than I thought, too. I have a shoe-free home, which helps keeps dirt at bay, and the rug's material is easy to vacuum. The real seller is the price tag because at the end of the day, if it gets ruined, I know it didn't cost me a fortune.
