The Sweet Story Behind the Creation of the Chocolate Chip Cookie
It has long been believed that the chocolate chip cookie was invented by accident. As the legend goes, Ruth Graves Wakefield was whipping up a batch of chocolate cookies when her chocolate didn't fully melt, thus creating the chocolate chips within the cookie. In reality, it was no accident; Wakefield knew exactly what she was doing.
In 1924 - when Wakefield was 21 - she attended the Framingham State Normal School to study household arts. The Massachusetts school still exists, though it is now a university. It was there that she pursued her culinary interests. A few years later, she opened the Toll House Inn with her husband, Kenneth Donald Wakefield, in the small town of Whitman, MA. Together, they owned and operated the tourist lodge.
On a glorious day in 1938, according to The Great American Chocolate Chip Cookie Book, Wakefield was going to make her famous butterscotch cookies when she instead came up with a brilliant alternative. While there are several stories floating around, it is now commonly believed that she grabbed a Nestlé chocolate bar and chopped it up into small pieces for her new recipe.
Prior to her invention of the chocolate chip cookie, Wakefield had written a popular cookbook, Toll House Tried and True Recipes. Following her breakthrough, she re-released the cookbook to include her recipe.
The cookie promptly became a popular treat outside of the Toll House Inn. A year later, Nestlé bought the rights to the recipe, as well as the Toll House name. The price for one of the world's most beloved baked goods? A single dollar and a lifetime supply of chocolate. Reflecting on the exchange later, Wakefield said, "I was always brought up in college to think that a professional person doesn't enter the commercial world." She did, however, continue to consult for Nestlé on recipes for years to come.
In 1966, the Wakefields decided to sell the inn. A decade later, she passed away from undisclosed causes. Her precision and craftsmanship is frequently noted in books and articles about her. This can be detected even in the foreword of her cookbook. On the inn, she wrote, "Our aim has always been to offer a restful atmosphere and, in expanding, never to sacrifice fine quality or the kind of service we all want in our own homes." What's more, her innovative chocolate chip cookie is a reflection of that "restful atmosphere" and the sheer effort she put into all aspects of her life. For Ruth Graves Wakefield, nothing great was ever an accident.
18 Secrets From Flight Attendants That Will Change the Way You Fly
Does a cheaper flight mean a less safe flight? What happens if your plane is struck by lightning? And why do we have to put our seats in the upright position for landing? The keepers of the answers to your burning questions are the very same people serving you cocktails and snack packs. Flight attendants see it all, and they know the ins and outs of air travel.
We spoke to two flight attendants who both work for one of the top three major US airlines - they answered our questions on the condition of anonymity. From the things that annoy flight attendants to tips and tricks they practice when they're flying, these expert travelers have secrets that will calm your fears and may make you think twice before you complain extra loud about your dinner not being just right on your next flight. Read on for the juicy details only flight attendants can provide.
22 Airport Hacks to Remember Before Your Next Flight
12 Tips For Sleeping on a Plane Like a Pro
1. What are some things that annoy flight attendants?
"Discourteous passengers, touching the flight attendant to get their attention as we walk by, whispering (the airplane can be very loud and I'm not the best at reading lips!), complaining about weather and/or aircraft maintenance delays (we don't have any control over this, and we are just as inconvenienced as you are)."
2. Why do tray tables and seats have to be in upright position for takeoffs and landings?
"Especially the tray tables! During an evacuation, where every second matters to get away from the plane, if a tray table is down it will slow down the egress of the two passengers on the middle and window seat. If the aircraft were on fire, wouldn't you want a clear escape path to the exit? Same goes for the seat back. Any added obstacle will slow egress in an emergency."
3. What is something flight attendants wish passengers knew/understood?
"We don't choose what we serve - we simply show up and serve what's there, and if it's not there, you're not getting any. We also have no control when it comes to delays due to weather and/or aircraft maintenance. So please, be courteous to us in the event those may occur. As Captain Sullenberger said, 'Better a delay than a disaster!'"
4. What are some common myths that people believe about flying that aren't true?
"That the brace position is meant to kill you faster - I find this to be the most ridiculous myth; in a crash landing you wouldn't want to be tucked away and brace your body for impact by compacting it and covering your vitals such as neck, face, stomach, etc. Even flight attendants have a brace position, and we do it every takeoff and landing!"
5. Does a cheaper ticket/airline mean a less safe flight?
"Absolutely not! A lot of variables make up the complex formula for ticket price such as time of booking, cabin, seat, frequent flyer status and miles, airplane configuration, in-flight service on that particular flight, optional items like baggage allowance or seat assignment. Basically, all aircraft are subject to FAA regulations, and we wouldn't be in the business if safety wasn't our number one priority. Airlines are able to customize their product to their brand, but safety remains the number one focus."
6. What sort of training does a flight attendant go through?
"Training is on average five and a half weeks, most of which is unpaid. In training we learn and are tested to proficiency on certain items such as aircraft general, first aid, security, and evacuation drills. Only about four days is spent on service!"
7. What are flight attendants trained in, in terms of safety emergency situations, both plane and people-related?
"We have a lot of formal training in safety and emergency situations. Four of our five weeks of intense, six-days-a-week training was spent on safety and emergency situations. Most of our people-related situations are learned on the job. We have been hired/selected by other professional flight attendants for our ability to make good decisions and to be able to read situations and people with good judgment. So many of us are well equipped to handle these situations that come up, but sometimes it does take a second opinion of another crew member."
8. What happens when one engine goes out?
"All aircraft are certified to fly with one engine operation for a safe landing. The aircraft that fly over water are ETOPS certified. Airplanes are aerodynamic, meaning they are designed so air can easily flow around the airplane to decrease drag so they can glide in descent for an extended time with one working engine. One example is Air Canada Flight 143, which ran out of fuel at 41,000 feet and managed to glide and land without a loss of life. And then there's the all too famous US Airways flight 1549 - so in short, engine failure isn't like a flat tire, just a rare inconvenience."
9. Can turbulence make a plane crash?
"No, but it can be unsettling and even throw people about. Due to modern technology, turbulence can now easily be predicted than ever before. In general the pilots know what's ahead of their aircraft at all times, but severe turbulence does happen unexpectedly from time to time. Most turbulence-related injuries are actually to flight attendants, as we are more vulnerable being out of our jumpsuits most of the flight. The main danger to passengers is not being seated with their seat belts fastened when this unlikely event occurs or unsecured items becoming instant projectiles."
10. What happens if the landing gear fails?
"Simple, we land without it! This event is actually called a 'belly landing,' where the plane lands on the belly without the gear lowered. This event has actually happened where LOT Polish Airlines Flight 16 landed with out the gear lowered with emergency vehicles and personnel on the ground standing by. The plane landed without incident on its belly, and the flight attendants warranted an evacuation - all 231 people were evacuated via the escape slides without injury or loss of life."
11. Is it safe to fly during a thunderstorm? What happens when a plane is hit by lightning?
"Planes are designed to be hit by lightning both in the air and on the ground! Thanks to the engineers who design the plane. The skin of the aircraft acts as a conductor to keep lightning from entering the internal parts of the aircraft, such as the cabin or anything such as flight controls that may affect the well-being of the airplane, and the lightning is redirected out through the wings and tail. There may be damage to the plane (rare), but it will make a safe landing. Thanks to the engineers and plane manufacturers, an airliner has not crashed from lightning in over 45 years. From the passenger perspective, there may be a loud bang or white glow, but not to worry, the internal parts if the plane are protected."
12. What are some reasons that a flight is completely canceled rather than just delayed?
"A lot of reasons can a play a factor with this, mostly crew legality comes into play especially out of our hub cities where we don't have ready reserve flight attendants who can easily take over the flight. FAA mandates how many hours a crew can work a day in any given duty period - pilots are usually 12 hours and flight attendants are usually 16 hours. A long day's friend is fatigue and fatigue is usually where mistakes can be made. Planes have been crippled and met demise under fatigue conditions of the crew. Sometimes the delay can be so long that they cancel the flight for the day and run an extra segment the following day.
Although cancellations are becoming more and more rare, with airlines running about 90 percent completion rate of flights. The most common cancellation is weather, where planes are late or never take off to come in or they just simply can't operate a safe operation under the severe weather conditions and it makes sense to cancel the flight vs. stringing the passengers along to departure that will never happen."
13. What are some tips you have for packing light?
"My suggestion is to wear your larger coat and bulkiest shoes on the flight if possible. Also pack things that combine well together. One skirt that goes with four different shirts or a dress that can be worn for day and evening. It cuts down on the number of items you'll have to pack. Things like underwear, socks, tank tops, etc. can be shoved into boots if those are something you choose to pack instead of wear on the plane."
14. What are the essentials you HAVE to have when you fly?
"(Noise-canceling) headphones, sweater/jacket/wrap or scarf, Kiehl's in-flight spray, and empty water bottle to fill up after security checkpoint."
15. What other travel tips/tricks/secrets do you have?
"Do not depend heavily on the airline/flight attendants. Things happen, we make mistakes, and sometimes we aren't having the best day, but if you can make the flight attendants smile or laugh, you'll never go thirsty. Always anticipate delays and your own needs such as temperature - bring a sweater, dietary needs - we aren't a 7-Eleven, bring your gluten-free stuff from home, medication - keep it with you at all times, along with your wallet, keys, and passport!"
16. Any tips for beating jet lag?
"Drink a lot of water! My best advice is to get yourself onto the time of the place you're going as best you can. If I get in and it's 2 p.m. and I really want to nap, I force myself to stay awake until it's 'bedtime.' It can be really challenging, but that's why coffee exists."
17. What's the coolest place you've ever been?
"I have to say that being paid to work a flight to Maui and then getting to lay on the beach all the next day and then working the flight back is not such a rough life. As long as I have enough time, I try to get out and find some things to explore in every city. I also love Boston and NYC (places I'd never been until I got this job)."
18. What made you get into the airline business? What do those in the business love about it?
"I have wanted to be a flight attendant for a long time. I have always been drawn to the idea of traveling all over for work, the flexible scheduling, and the fact that I get to work with a variety of people. Why people stay in the airline business is due to the flexible hours and the travel benefits. And with many of the larger carriers, once you've worked with them for 15 years, you get lifetime flying benefits with that carrier."

6 Secrets to Making the Most of Your Spring Getaway
Raise your hand if this sounds like you: "It takes me a couple days to relax on vacation, and then I have a great time." It's so, so common: The first few days of a trip, you're still wrapped up in thoughts and anxieties related to your job and home, but after a little time in a gorgeous new location, devoid of your daily routine, you manage to let your guard down.
On a recent visit to COMO Parrot Cay, an incredibly quiet, serene, sun-drenched island in Turks and Caicos, one executive told me he sees this all the time with return guests: the travelers arrive and start out glued to their phones and distraught over any changes the hotel has made ("You redid the reception area?!") - kind of a bummer tone to take on a dream vacation. But once thoughts of their old lives fade, they can get into a vacation groove and get some much-needed R&R. (Which is the whole point of a Spring vacation!)
But, to state the obvious: why waste those first two or three days on a trip feeling tense, when you could slip into that blissful state the second you pull up to your destination? I tapped some mindfulness and travel experts for their freshest tips for getting into a vacation groove at minute one.
Nobody Ever Believes I Bought This Velvet Couch For $349 at Walmart
Every time a new person walks into my apartment, they ask me the same exact question: "OMG, where did you get your couch?" It's a gorgeous green, velvet sofa; I wanted something colorful since I live in foggy San Francisco. When I tell my guests it's from Walmart, they never believe me. But it's true! I searched far and wide for a timeless, functional couch that would be the focal point of my space. The Novogratz Vintage Tufted Sofa Sleeper ($349) from their Walmart collection was exactly what I was looking for, especially with that insanely low price point.
What makes this pick a major winner is that it also converts into a twin bed, so guests can have a comfortable place to sleep. I have already had a few people stay the night and comment on how pleasantly they rested. The design itself is classic; I was impressed by the little details, like the tufted cushions and Victorian legs. The fabric is an imitation velvet that looks convincingly real. I also prefer the material because it doesn't absorb liquid or leave stains behind. I have even spilled a glass of red wine on my beloved sofa, and you would never know it.
If green is not your thing, the couch also comes in gray, burgundy, and millennial pink. I had it delivered to my home, and it was easy to carry up my stairs between two people. It comes in parts and took about an hour to assemble. If you love style but are tight on money, I highly recommend this sofa. If I had room for another one, I'd buy it.

Sterling K. Brown Has a Creative Solution to Help Your Kids Learn to Love Cleaning
Sterling K. Brown practically oozes empathy and compassion on TV each week as Randall Pearson, everyone's favorite dorky-yet-lovable dad on This Is Us. In real life, Sterling also knows a thing or two about domestic life as the proud dad of two boys and husband to the beautifully talented Ryan Michelle Bathe. Simply put, there's plenty to admire about the 41-year-old actor.
Sterling recently partnered with Clorox and the nonprofit organization Thrive Collective to launch a new arts and crafts hub for at-risk kids in Harlem, NY, proving he really has just as big a heart as his This Is Us character. POPSUGAR caught up with the Emmy and Golden Globe winner, who was tapped to host the event and delivered a moving speech to an eager group of children waiting to greet him. There, he explained the significance of his latest initiative and how it bridges the gap between art and community service.
"What we learned through research that Clorox has conducted is not only does cleaning make you a more productive human being, but children who grow up in a clean space are more empathetic," he shared. "They become even more empathetic when they do the cleaning themselves. More than that, children who grow up cleaning become adults who feel connected to their communities."
"Now you have this space that has been created so that kids can come and share their creativity," he said minutes before his address. "They get a chance to create and have their creations validated by saying your perspective of the world is important."
The heartwarming campaign hit close to home for Sterling because it reminded him a lot of his own childhood. "Growing up, if I didn't have a free space to allow my imagination to abound and be explored without constraint, I couldn't do what I do today."
He shared those same sentiments with the crowd. "I am an artist and I recognize the power of imagination and to have your imagination celebrated. Young people, use your art to make the world a better place. Show them the world which you seek and have them appreciate the perspective which you bring."
"Never forget where you come from and never stop giving back."
The decorated actor closed out his speech with an empowering message that would make his TV dad, Jack Pearson, proud. "I used to think cleaning was an end to and of itself. But cleaning is a beginning. There's something really special about taking ownership and pride about the space in which you inhabit, but also to know that you become a more empathetic human being [from cleaning] and you feel a need and desire to give back to the community for which you are a part."
"Never forget where you come from and never stop giving back," he continued. "As we ascend, as we climb together, make sure that you pull other people up with you. Go out into your communities, whether it means going to a park and cleaning that up, or whatever it is, make sure that the community that you're a part of knows that they are appreciated. Put your hands to the grindstone and make something happen."
Jessica Jones: Everything You Need to Remember About Season 1
If you're missing some snarky, kickass heroines in your life, fear not because Jessica Jones has returned to Netflix with an action-packed second season. That said, it's probably been a while since you've kept an eye on your favorite superhuman sleuth with a biting wit. Netflix released the first season of Jessica Jones in November 2015, after all.
Going through each major character, we present to you a refresher course on everything that happened in season one, as well as other Jessica Jones character involvements in The Defenders. And trust us, things went down - we certainly can't forget about Kilgrave's nefarious plots and Jeri Hogarth's morbid near-death experience.
Brush Up on Jessica Jones's Gut-Wrenching Origin Story Before Watching Season 2

If you've seen, oh, I don't know, any superhero movie or TV show before, then you know that the hero's origin story is almost always a tragic one. Jessica Jones, the titular hero of Netflix's critically acclaimed Marvel drama, is no different.
While season one of Jessica Jones works to establish the cynical P.I. and reluctant superhero's gritty life in New York's Hell's Kitchen, season two dives into her own heartbreaking upbringing. The first trailer for season two, which was released a month ahead of the season's March 8 debut, features a few glimpses of how Jessica (Krysten Ritter) lost her family as a teenager and subsequently gained her superhuman strength. Neither experience was a cakewalk, of that you can be certain.
It will be interesting to see how the new episodes keep Jessica's story moving forward - she's getting a new love interest, still recovering from Kilgrave's (David Tennant) reign of terror, and tracking down a vicious murderer - while also surfacing important elements from her past. We can't be sure of how Netflix's adaptation of her story will play out in the upcoming season quite yet, but for now we can fill you in on what young Jessica goes through in both the comics and in season one, just in case you need a refresher.
In the comics, Jessica Campbell is a regular teenager and student at Midtown High (where Peter Parker goes to school). That all changes when her father gets tickets to bring their family to Disney World from his boss at Stark Industries (yes, Tony Stark) and loads up the family in the car for the trip. As you can see in the panels above, their return journey is a fatal one: the Campbells' car ends up crashing into a military convoy transporting radioactive chemicals.
Jessica is the only one who survives the collision but spends several months in a coma. When she wakes up, she realizes that her exposure to the chemicals in the convoy has left her with super strength, flight, and invulnerability. Afterward, Jessica is adopted by the Jones family after a brief stay in an orphanage. She returns to Midtown High as an outcast but eventually bonds with Peter once she realizes the two have more in common than she initially thought, prompting her to start using her powers for good.
Krysten Ritter on Her Debut Novel, Jessica Jones, and the Power of Complex Female Protagonists
Netflix's version of Jessica's story obviously takes a few significant diversions from its source material, but the bones of her devastating childhood are still there. Season one shades in Jessica's young life in episodes like "AKA WWJD," when Kilgrave brings her back to her childhood home (where he's re-created it exactly as it was when she first lived there, down to the family photos and old Nirvana poster). She has more detailed flashbacks to the crash, which happened on the day she and her family set off on the 12-hour road trip.
Just like in the comics, Jessica had a mother, father, and little brother who all perished in the accident. In the show, Jessica inadvertently triggers the crash when she breaks her brother's Game Boy in the backseat, causing her father to take his eyes off the road when he turns around to yell at her. We only see up to the car almost slamming into the back of a large truck, but there's nothing on the nondescript vehicle - hazardous materials warnings, for instance - that signifies it's carrying radioactive chemicals.
In "AKA I've Got the Blues," Jessica finally awakens from her coma postcrash. She finds herself adopted by Patsy Walker, the mother of Jessica's classmate and TV actress Trish Walker, as a publicity stunt to distract from a nightclub fire Trish caused. We also discover that a shady company called IGH paid for Jessica's medical bills after the wreck and probably played a part in how she gained her abilities in the first place. The season two trailer all but confirms that, offering us glimpses of Jessica strapped to a gurney and files with her medical information on them. The trailer also opens with a few harrowing scenes from the day of Jessica's accident:
Interspersed with gruesome shots of the blood-covered bodies of her family, there's a clear image of the truck they slammed into. It's overturned, and a ton of aluminum chemical containers are strewn about the highway - maybe Jessica gets her powers from a chemical spill after all? Either way, it's obvious that a complex, mysterious web of lies and memories awaits us in season two.
This Isn't a Good Sign - The This Is Us Season 2 Finale Teaser Already Has Us Sobbing
Just when we thought we had finally come to terms with losing Jack Pearson, This Is Us sucker punches us right in the feelings. In the trailer for the season two finale, the show teases a very special guest at Kate and Toby's upcoming wedding: an older Jack. In the short clip, we see Rebecca and Jack share a sweet moment together as he caresses his wife's hair. Cue the tears!
Of course, not everything is what it seems. While Rebecca is spotted wearing navy at Kate's wedding, she's actually wearing white in the scene with Jack. Perhaps, the scene between her and Jack is actually at her wedding . . . to Miguel! Or even worse, it could be foreshadowing that Rebecca is going to die. How will we ever make it through this episode?
Tessa Thompson Is All the Way Here For Valkyrie Joining Black Panther's Dora Milaje
Tessa Thompson now has the distinctive honor of calling herself a member of Marvel's cinematic universe. Last November, the Creed actress joined the ranks of Scarlett Johansson (The Avengers), Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Elizabeth Olsen (Captain America: Civil War) as one of the notable badass female superheroes when she suited up as Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok. Her performance was praised by critics, who called her a "scene stealer," and the Los Angeles native quickly became a fan favorite. While unconfirmed, Thompson is rumored to be reprising her role in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War film. We chatted with the Time's Up advocate ahead of the DVD release of her Marvel debut to get her take on why everyone loves Valkyrie and get her thoughts on the success of Black Panther.
POPSUGAR: Valkyrie has been hailed as one of the few female characters in the Marvel cinematic universe that had a solid, well-written character arc. How did you feel about the positive reception to her?
Tessa Thompson: Well, I mean, obviously I'm superflattered by it, and I'm so happy the fans responded to it in [that] way. One of the things that compelled me to work on the character and certainly to work with Marvel is I feel like they've really done such a fantastic job at creating superheroes that also just feel like humans. That you can really get invested in their dynamics, their characters, their friendships, their love, their loss. And I think the female characters in Marvel are no exception to that. I'm really proud that we're living inside of a space not just in Marvel but in Hollywood and globally where we're really wanting to put women at the forefront, to hear their stories and for them to be reflected certainly in media and become nuanced, incredible beings that we are as women. I'm excited about this new phase.
PS: Fans are also pulling for Valkyrie to get her own stand-alone movie. Is that something you would be open to?
TT: I'm really flattered by it. I love working with Marvel, they're deeply collaborative. I love playing Valkyrie. I will even go outside of the Marvel cinematic universe. I'll show up at a Bond movie if they need me there as Valkyrie. [Laughs] I really trust [Marvel's] vision for the character. It hasn't let me down thus far, so I'm curious to see where they and she takes me.
PS: I know initially there were murmurs about Valkyrie being the love interest of Thor [Chris Hemsworth], but when I watched the movie, I actually didn't get that vibe at first. There were hints, but mostly what I saw was this fully realized woman who was flawed, yet very self-aware and very relatable in that sense. She wasn't just the picture perfect love interest we normally see in superhero films. How important was it for you to play such a fleshed out character?
TT: That was wildly important to me, but I wasn't worried that wasn't going to be the case because of Taika Waititi and the work that he has done before and the conversations that we had. He really wanted to create a female superhero that sort of bucked convention. But that being said, I think you can play a love interest and have her be complicated and an incredible female character. I felt like I was able to do that when I made Creed because Ryan Coogler is that sort of filmmaker, and then, in the same way, Lupita in Black Panther is technically the love interest but has a world of her own and a life of her own.
"You can play a love interest and have her be complicated and an incredible female character."
I think regardless of what the woman is in the context of the script, as long as you are working with collaborators that really want to make sure that any page space that you have feels essential, then you're golden. That was something that we certainly flirted with. We shot some takes where Chris and I flirted more and we shot some takes where I completely dismissed him, and what we've all thought was cooler at the end of the day was just to see this woman who really was on her own trajectory. We also thought it was such a cool reversal that Chris's character, who is the hero of the movie, was fangirling over my character. [Laughs] We just thought that we haven't seen that been done before, so we loved that idea.
PS: You mentioned Black Panther. What did you think of the movie?
TT: Well, I'm still in Wakanda. [Laughs] I have not come back, and I do not want to come back. I'm putting an offer on a condo in Wakanda. I really enjoy it. The people have embraced me. I love that film. I'm so proud because I get to see friends of mine on screen just killing me softly, but I also just think about what it's doing culturally, not just for black people - which has been tremendous. I just think that the cultural conversation - there's been this myth in Hollywood, certainly that black and brown faces don't sell, and those are harder movies to get made. And what you're seeing is that [Black Panther] is shattering all of those perceptions and ideas because people are really showing up for this film. And never mind that it's incredible and empowering to see black faces on screen in this way, [and with] natural black hair; it also is just such a good movie. Never mind its political importance, it's just a damn good film, and that's what people are really responding to most of all, and what a time.
PS: On the topic of fully realized female characters, what's your take on the Dora Milaje?
TT: Listen. I mean, the characters are so incredible, so I don't want to diminish any of that by focusing on their beauty and fashion, but their beauty and their fashion! [Laughs] They're so gorgeous, but they're so incredible. I just feel like I want to shave my head now. If I didn't have an oddly shaped head, I would have shaved it immediately. I could do a whole stand-alone film of just them and their origin story, just seeing them training. I just think that it's just such incredible characters, and that scene with Danai [Gurira] and Daniel [Kaluuya] is so well-played, and her just being like, "Listen. If you're getting in the way of me and my ideals and how I want to serve my country, then goodbye, friend." I felt so powerful. In a time where we're really talking about the importance of allowing women to take up their space, not to take any crap, that was really exciting.
PS: Do you think Valkyrie would be in her element fighting alongside those women - in future films maybe?
TT: She definitely would. I mean, sort of Valkyrie's biggest sorrow and something that really creates a void for her is being separated from her sister and the fact that all of her Valkyrior warrior women were slain, and she's sort of a lone soldier. If she were to travel to Wakanda and find those women, the sense of purpose that she would have would be tremendous. And obviously because I'm playing Valkyrie, I think it would be a moment where you know when black and brown people, we see each other, and we're like, 'Oh my God! You're here too!' [Laughs] 'Yasss!' So that could be it. For Valkyrie, it would be, 'Oh my God! I've been in Asgard. You know there's only one other black person.' And Idris [Elba] is really a fly black person to get to spend time with, but we like company. So I think she would be [a] perfect [addition]. She would be very excited.
Thor: Ragnarok is now available on digital. Out on Blu-ray and DVD March 6.
Sorry, Ladies and Gents: Tom Hardy Is Not as Tall as You Probably Thought
That fantasy you have of Tom Hardy towering over you for a kiss might not be as realistic as you think. In fact, while the Venom actor opts for larger-than-life roles, he stands at just 5'9". Tom might be the same height as his Peaky Blinders costar Cillian Murphy, but he is smaller than his all-knowing friend Leonardo DiCaprio, who reportedly boasts 6 feet of height - although there is talk that this might be a white lie and he actually stands at 5'10".
It's a good thing Tom just signed on to play real-life gangster Al Capone, as the crime boss who inspired Scarface stood at 5'6".

33 Sure Signs That You're an Empath
Do you pick up on the vibe of a room the moment you walk in? Can you almost always tell when someone is lying? Do you just generally have A LOT of feelings? You're probably an empath. You may be familiar with the spectrum of personality types between introverts and extroverts, but empaths are a whole other type of personality you may not know about. Empaths are often (but not always) more introverted, but the key aspect of the personality type is an empath's ability to relate to and absorb the feelings of other people. Empaths are extremely sensitive to their surroundings, and they are very affected by the energies of those around them.
There are positives to being an empath; for instance, they are sympathetic, caring, and understanding. They are intuitive and have the ability to influence the mood and energy around them. Empaths are good listeners and caretakers, and they are known for their compassion for others. However, being an empath definitely has its challenges. Because they are so sensitive, they can sometimes have difficulty differentiating other people's energy from their own. Commercials, movies, books, TV, the news, seeing the struggles of others - anything with an emotional element can affect empaths on a deeper level. Outside circumstances and situations can have a huge impact on the mental - and even physical - state of an empath. Empaths can unconsciously mirror other people's habits and moods, and for better or worse, they can soak up the energy around them. Empaths need to make sure to care for themselves in addition to caring for the rest of the world. Here are some signs you're an empath.
- You're extremely intuitive.
- It's easy for you to tell when people are lying.
- The energy of other people can change your own energy.
- You get "gut feelings" often (and they're almost always right).
- You often feel other people's pain.
- You consider yourself an introvert.
- You need to be near water.
- You often find yourself absorbing other people's emotions (both good and bad).
- You can get overwhelmed when surrounded by a lot of people.
- People feel like they can come to you when they have a problem.
- You're very sensitive.
- You love to be outside in nature because it revitalizes you.
- Being around certain people can make you feel drained.
- You feel physically or emotionally sick when seeing upsetting things in the news, on TV, or in movies.
- Your mood changes depending on who you're in a room with.
- You feel the same feeling around a specific person each time you see them.
- You have a big heart.
- You constantly seek answers for everything.
- You know that your energy can change the atmosphere around you.
- You go back and forth between being very expressive and very reclusive.
- You sometimes find yourself putting others' needs before your own.
- You value your alone time.
- You're a good listener.
- You deal with stomach issues and chronic fatigue due to emotional stress.
- You know and understand things, without needing any explanation.
- You are a creative type.
- You're a big animal-lover.
- You always need to know the truth and do not like deceit.
- You're a free spirit and find yourself daydreaming often.
- You're prone to mood swings (based on the environment you're in at the time).
- You're extremely open-minded and accepting of all people and lifestyles.
- You won't let a problem go until you find a satisfying solution.
- You sense things that other people miss.
Could This Heartbreaking Harry Potter Theory Explain Hogwarts Class Sizes?
A question that comes up often in Harry Potter fan circles is about the size of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. JK Rowling describes the magical institution as one of Europe's largest, with hundreds of students attending every school year. But, as book readers are well aware, the series's namesake character seems to have very few classmates, a mere handful of boys and girls in Gryffindor, with similarly scant enrollment of Harry's grade level in Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin.
Well, one Tumblr user has come up with a theory for why Harry Potter's grade level is so small.
This theory, though heartbreaking considering its implications, has been parroted across Reddit and other fan blogs. It makes sense, right? Given that Harry's parents were killed when he was only 15 months old, it would explain tiny class sizes immediately surrounding Harry's year - Voldemort was at his peak leading up to and immediately following Harry's birth. Understandably, couples likely avoided conceiving during such terrifying times, with only a few brave wizards in Britain deciding to procreate despite the horrors of Voldemort's reign.
This sort of wartime fear surrounding major life events is a common theme in the Harry Potter series. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Molly Weasley explains that she and Arthur married young because everybody did during Voldemort's rise to power - they didn't know how much time they had left. And her son Ron justifies kissing Hermione during the Battle of Hogwarts for a similar reason.
"Is this the moment?" Harry asked weakly, and when nothing happened except that Ron and Hermione gripped each other still more firmly and swayed on the spot, he raised his voice. "Oi! There's a war going on here!"
Ron and Hermione broke apart, their arms still around each other.
"I know, mate," said Ron, who looked as though he had recently been hit on the back of the head with a Bludger, "So it's now or never, isn't it?"
So next time you're wondering why you only ever hear about a handful of Hogwarts students in Harry's grade level, understand that they're the few whose parents were brave (or foolish) enough to bring babies into the world during the reign of a complete monster.

Target Continues Its Beauty Aisle Glow Up With the Addition of 2 Natural Brands
If you've ever purchased the indie skincare brands Captain Blankenship or Meow Meow Tweet, you've probably had to shop the products online (and then wait for your new stuff to ship). But now, stocking up on these all-natural goodies just got way easier, as the two labels are now available at Target.
Yup, Target's beauty remodel continues. This news comes hot off the heels of the megastore releasing Glow Recipe, its own K-beauty inspired line. Now, two more skincare labels are hitting the drugstore's beauty aisles, so we can only assume we'll have radiant skin by Spring.
Captain Blankenship now graces Target's shelves, in the form of the exclusive new unisex brand Sailor by Captain Blankenship. This skincare line includes an aloe and pineapple mask, witch hazel toner, lemongrass face mist, chamomile-infused moisturizer, sea kelp cleanser, and lemongrass hairspray. All of these items clock in at less than $20, and live inside of 100 percent recyclable packaging.
Meanwhile, some of Meow Meow Tweet's most popular products such as facial soaps, deodorant sticks and a cream will also drop. These organic, vegan, and fair-trade products are formulated for sensitive skin. Along with bearing cutesy cat cartoon packaging, Meow Meow Tweet is famous for its products' refreshing scents.

This Redditor Tested 2 of the Most Hyped Drugstore Mascaras Out There, and the Winner Is . . .
Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Emily Faulstitch
Fact: you can never have too many mascaras, especially if you pick 'em up at the drugstore for less than $10. That's why we don't think there needs to be just one "best" tube out there - there is ample room at the lash party for all of our favorite mascaras. However, one Redditor just did a face-off of sorts, by pitting two of the most viral affordable fringe-enhancers out there against each other.
Reddit user Squidshae showed off L'Oréal Paris Lash Paradise ($10) juxtaposed against Essence Get Big Lashes ($4). In the photo below, you can see the first option on her left eye, and the second on her right.
Lash Paradise vs Essence Get Big Lashes from MakeupAddiction
Back when we tested Lash Paradise last year, we noticed that the thin bristles give off a nice, defined, and natural finish. The same goes for this Reddit test; the model's fringe looks clean and fanned. There's not a whole lot of length there, but it's a great everyday, your-lashes-but-better look.
Meanwhile, on the other side of her face, the Essence tube basically had a party with her lashes. There's nothing subtle about this long, full look. Her out-to-there fringe is definitely worthy of many double takes. Seriously, someone could rename Get Big Lashes, "I Can't Believe It's Not Falsies." While there's some very minor clumping going on, as we wrote in our review of Essence mascara, that can be easily remedied by tapping off excess product from the wand before applying.
As Squidshae wrote in the comments, "I honestly like [both]. I like the Essence one for more long and dramatic lashes, but I like Lash Paradise for more full and fluttery lashes. If only I could get long, full, and fluttery all in one." Someone tell the folks at L'Oréal Paris and Essence the teams should unite for a product that gives off total mascara domination!
So basically: we're all winners. Both affordable options provide super impressive results and remind us that you don't need to empty your wallet to look super fly.
This Hydrating Skincare Method Is Literally Like a Moisturizer Sandwich For Your Face
I recently experienced a bout of seriously dry skin after flying to a much drier and cooler climate. And, although I'm mentally prepared for this to happen every time I fly home for the holidays, I'm never quite comfortable with the resurgence of my new, dry face. In fact, it's pretty uncomfortable (read: tight, itchy - not ideal).
Whether a temporary or long-term concern, dryness (caused by lack of oil) or dehydration (caused by lack of water) can be a real pain, particularly if you're trying to rehydrate on top of other, more aesthetically pressing skin concerns or if flaky skin isn't your MO.
While trying to resolve my desert-skin experience, I came across a straightforward formula that really is like a tall glass of water for your face. The best part? It doesn't involve buying new products or have so many steps that you need a YouTube tutorial to follow along. It's a simple, straightforward layering formula. Enter: the skincare sandwich. And no, despite the name, it doesn't involve any carbs (unless you want it to).
Enter: the skincare sandwich. And no, despite the name, it doesn't involve any carbs (unless you want it to).
Tokened by Caroline Hirons (who, if you don't know, is one of the best in the skincare blogging biz), the "skincare sandwich" is essentially just a digestible way of understanding how to layer your products for optimal hydration.
According to Caroline, you should think of your hydrating toner or mist as the "condiment in your sandwich." She goes on to explain, "You can make a sandwich using just bread and ham/cheese - but how much better does this sandwich work with butter/mayo? It all binds together and facilitates this process."
So, following Caroline's hydrating routine, you'd cleanse (this is your sourdough), acid exfoliate, spray hydrating mist (this is the butter, people!), apply your oil or serum, mist (again!), and then finally moisturize. And, if you're one of those people who asks for extra mayo on your bread, you can also follow up with a final mist if you please.
Layering your products in this way adds additional moisture between each step, helping to lock in hydration and, at the very least, help relieve some of that thirsty-skin feeling.
Bo Is Killing the Lipstick Game on Black-ish - Here's How to Replicate Her Look
Every week we tune into Black-ish for the comedy, but we stay for Rainbow's bold red lip! After constantly wishing we could get Bo's fierce red pout, we did some research. According to Tracee Ellis Ross, the actress has a signature color: Ruby Woo by MAC.
"I've been wearing MAC's Ruby Woo lipstick since high school," Tracee told the Los Angeles Times back in 2015. "I mix the majority of my lipsticks with Ruby Woo. I don't like glosses. I don't like stains. I like full-on, old-school, completely opaque matte lipstick."
The Black-ish actress loves the hue so much that she even wears it when she works out. "I love the look of a fresh face with a pop of color on the lips. It makes me feel so good. I'll even wear a red lip to the gym," she told InStyle last year. "I do the Tracy Anderson Method, so there's a lot of mirror work involved. When I see my red lips reflecting back at me, I'm like, 'Yeah, girl, that's right!'"
When it comes to her bright red lip look on the ABC series, you'll find the same shade. "Tracee does her own lips. We mix the colors. If it's a bright red, it's usually MAC's Ruby Woo with a MAC Cherry pencil," her makeup artist for the show, Nadyne Hicks, told The Cut in 2016 of her Black-ish signature lip shade.
If you want a perfect red lip like Rainbow's always on-point lip on Black-ish, or are just a major fan of Tracee's go-to lip look, then MAC's Ruby Woo should be your new lipstick for everything. If you'd rather a similar look that's a little different - at a different price point or different brand - we also have you covered with our favorite shades of red that would be Bo-approved.
Ashley Graham Just Signed a Huge Revlon Contract - Here's Why It's Such a Big Deal

Congratulations are in order for Ashley Graham! The gorgeous model just signed her first beauty contract as part of Revlon's "Live Boldly" campaign, and it's a groundbreaking deal, not only for the model, but for the entire beauty industry. Ashley has played a big role in the fashion world for years, posing for Sports Illustrated's Swim Issue and stunning on the cover of Vogue, but being one of the first curve models to lock down a major beauty contract had her in tears.
"Historically, curvy girls are not given beauty contacts," she told WWD. "It's kind of groundbreaking, because in my generation of models, this hasn't happened yet. This is one of those moments where I'm over the moon, I cried a little."
Ashley joins Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot and models Adwoa Aboah, Imaan Hammam, and Raquel Zimmermann in the new campaign.
"You've been slowly seeing [curvy] models pop up in makeup campaigns, but you haven't heard of any actually signing contracts, and I think it's because [companies] just want to get their feet wet. It's like, 'Hmmm, let's try this bold curvy thing now and see if it's real or see if it's a trend,'" Ashley said. "The average American woman is a size 14 and if you ask me, lipstick does not have a size." And let's be real: Ashley can rock a red lip like a boss.
Guess who just got a beauty contract?! This girl! So thrilled to join the @revlon family as we continue to show #BeautyBeyondsize. Follow @revlon to find out more about our #LiveBoldly campaign. #Revlon pic.twitter.com/fqygDuBKl1

We Need to Talk About How Chic This $3 Bottle of Brush Cleaner Looks
Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Mark Popovich
Listen, I'm no shelfie snob. My toothpaste-smeared medicine cabinet is probably the second most un-Instagrammable thing on the planet, ranking only after my grandfather's. I'm a sensible New Englander who purchases products that work, regardless of aesthetics, but even I have succumbed to the charms of E.L.F.'s (adorably named) Brush Shampoo ($3). I mean, just look at her!
The sexy and streamlined silhouette of this bottle is honestly getting me a little hot and bothered at my desk. Plus, the packaging has just one simple sketch of a brush that's a sophisticated adornment. No matter your bathroom's decor (or lack thereof . . . speaking mostly to me, here), this versatile packaging will look like it belongs.
As for what's inside, this "shampoo" is made of gentle ingredients that pull dirt and grime away from your brushes to ensure that your tools stay in tip-top shape. What's more, reviews for this cleanser are glowing. Many users commented on how it works wonders to rid Beautyblenders of those dang foundation stains that curse our sponges like a blight upon our families.
Here's to effortlessly gorgeous bathrooms!
What You Need to Know About the 6 Main Skincare Acids
If you've ever felt overwhelmed by the skincare world, know that you're not alone. There's a veritable alphabet soup of vitamins, a constant debate over silicones, preservatives, and alcohols, and a never-ending stream of words like "occlusives," "parabens," and "surfactants."
Though it's impossible to cover everything in a day (let alone a single article), we can start somewhere. And today, that somewhere is acids. With the help of board certified dermatologists, we're breaking down six different types of acids by explaining what they are and how they can benefit your skin.
Mark Your Calendars! Benefit Cosmetics's Gimme Brow Is Coming Back
For beauty connoisseurs and the eyebrow obsessed, last year's recall of Benefit Cosmetics's iconic Gimme Brow was a tragic and trying time. In October, the brand voluntarily recalled the product out of caution, stating that a batch did not meet its "stringent quality standards." It was just a recall, insinuating that the product would return. But somehow during this frenzy, people thought the product was being discontinued.
To be clear, the product was never discontinued, but it did disappear for a while. And now POPSUGAR can exclusively reveal that Gimme Brow is coming back with a new-ish name and look. Meet Gimme Brow+, the same volumizing brow product we know and love but with a few tune-ups. The product will be available everywhere starting next week!
We know you have questions, as did we. Has the formula changed? Why the new look? And what's that plus sign about?
Having tried Gimme Brow+, we can attest that the microfibers don't feel or look different from the original Gimme Brow. Benefit told us, though, that the formula was modified slightly to include updated ingredients and to meet the latest standards set by Benefit's parent company, LVMH. That said, it still volumizes in a natural way, and we really didn't notice a difference in how it applies or looks. As for the box? It went from blue to pink packaging, a subtle difference that we barely noticed upon seeing it for the first time. The plus sign is really to tell people exactly what it does - it "adds" volume.
Gimme Brow+ will launch everywhere next Tuesday, March 13, so mark your calendars.
