Snapchat's New Filters Turn the Sky Into Stunning Masterpieces
Say goodbye to those cliched Snaps of sunsets and cloudless skies: with Snapchat's new sky filters, you can add a rainbow, make it a starry night, or create a beautiful sunset on any photo you take. The new feature is yet another example of the company being innovative in using augmented reality to enhance your everyday world.
To use the new filters, just take a photo that includes the sky. Snapchat will automatically detect the photo has the sky in the background and will let you swipe through to find a sky filter. You can expect to first see filters like a starry night or stormy clouds, but just like the 3D Bitmoji, these will change daily. The feature started rolling out to iOS and Android users on Sept. 25.
Unlike 3D World Lenses, you don't need to tap the screen to activate the filters - they just show up, like how the altitude, speed, time, and geofilters already do. Ahead, see some of the filters we've been able to play around with, then give them a try on your phone.
Nope, You're Not Crazy - Your Bitmoji on Snapchat's Snap Map Do Change
If you can't stop opening up Snapchat and checking in on Snap Map, we don't blame you. The feature, which offers a fun, instant way to check in on what your friends are up to, is quickly becoming addictive. And with Bitmoji on the map, it's hard not to check back often. The Bitmoji (now called Actionmoji) on the map will change and show up riding in cars and airplanes or taking part in activities like building a sandcastle on the beach.
The Actionmoji change depending on a variety of factors, like your location, time of day, and how fast you're traveling. Most of the time, you'll see your Actionmoji simply standing wherever you are. But if you're near an airport, you might see yourself in a plane. Driving? You'll suddenly be in a car on Snap Map as well.
Ahead, see some of the Actionmoji we've spotted so far, and then try to get them yourself. And remember: you can control who can and cannot see your location on Snap Map, and if you don't open the app for a few hours, your Actionmoji will disappear off the map.
7 Features That Finally Make the New Apple Watch Worth It
Despite releasing the Apple Watch Series 2 just one year ago in September 2016, Apple has decided to amp up its game with a new device in the lineup: the Apple Watch Series 3. However, unlike the previous two models, this Apple Watch finally comes with LTE service. Find out what else Apple revealed about the Apple Watch Series 3 at an event on Sept. 12:
- It has cell service: You no longer need your iPhone near you at all times to receive or make calls on the Apple Watch!
- It shares the same number as your personal phone: Instead of coming up with a new number and giving it to your friends and family, it'll carry the same one as your personal phone.
- It has a new crown color: The crown, instead of matching whatever color your watch is, will be red.
- It'll come in the following colors: Gold aluminum, silver aluminum, and space gray, as well as a gray version in ceramic.
- New sports and Hermés bands: The Apple Watch Series 3 will be available with a more breathable sports loop band, as well in new Hermés styles and watch faces.
- It still has some of the awesome features of Apple Watch Series 2: It'll still come with a built-in GPS tracker and have a water resistance of 50 meters.
- A new watchOS: With watchOS 4, out on Sept. 19, the Apple Watch will come with a slew of new features, like smart activity coaching, new Toy Story watch faces, and a new Heart Rate app that can measure your heart rate while it's resting, during a workout, and while it's recovering.
The Apple Watch Series 3 starts presale on Sept. 15 with the 38mm and 42mm models retailing for $399. Apple is also offering a noncellular Apple Watch Series 3 option at $329. It ships out on Sept. 22. Check out more photos of Apple's newest watch ahead.
Flying Coach? Here's How to Actually Get Restful Sleep on a Long Flight
On a long flight, catching some solid zzz's can be difficult. There's constant noise, distractions, and lights, and honestly, a cramped coach seat does not make the most comfortable temporary bed. But to ensure you arrive at your destination fresh and rested, there are steps you can take to help you drift into dreamworld and actually get restful sleep. Through ample personal experience (I've flown from NYC to Southeast Asia several times in coach - I'm practically a pro at 15-hour flights) and a little help from travel and health experts, we're bringing you a foolproof plan for operation REM cycle on your next international trip.
- Get an inflatable footrest. For me, this one travel accessory has completely changed the game of long-haul air travel. They pack down to nothing, but once on board, you inflate, and like magic, your seat is transformed into a reclining sofa. Kiss swollen feet goodbye! The footrests work best in a bulkhead seat, but will still help in any row.
- Lay off the coffee. Lindsey Bristol, a registered dietitian and nutritionist with Swanson Health, advised travelers to avoid caffeinated beverages within six hours of departure time. This gives your body enough time to flush the caffeine.
- Meditate. Bristol also recommended meditation to prep your mind for bedtime. "Meditation and deep breathing exercises can help calm your mind, promote relaxation, and support stress reduction for easier sleep. Put on your headphones and listen to a quick meditation to help you wind down."
- Get support. When all else fails, there's no shame in reaching for an all-natural supplement to help. "Natural supplements like magnesium and melatonin promote relaxation so you can rest better. Magnesium in particular may help relax your muscles, reduce tension, and calm your mind to help you get better rest all around!" offered Bristol. Don't forget the essentials: eye mask, ear plugs or headphones, a gel or memory foam neck pillow, a blanket, comfortable clothing, etc. The key is to bring whatever will help you make you comfortable.
- Bring your sleep scent. If there's a scent you use on your pillow at home, bring it with you. It will help your brain realize it's time to go to sleep. If you don't have a scent you already use, lavender is a pretty safe bet. Joyce Striar, a travel agent with Protravel International, recommended the scent via a sachet, mist, or gel to promote relaxation.
- Avoid unwanted wake-up calls. You might typically be an aisle person, but you're much more likely to get woken up in the middle of the flight for a bathroom run. Choose a window to ensure you won't be bothered. Striar recommended buckling your seat belt over your blanket so the flight attendants know you are strapped in.
- Make a white noise playlist. Music might be distracting, but the sound of snoring, crying, talking, or moving around isn't any better. Create an hour-long white noise playlist and listen to it on repeat to help cancel out the background commotion.
9 Ways You Can Go on a Cruise While Barely Spending a Dime on Board
Cruises are a great travel option for several reasons: they're mostly all-inclusive, you're able to hit multiple ports on a single trip, and they give you more bang for your buck overall. On top of many being fairly affordable to begin with, there are more ways you can save money once you're on board. And if you stick to what's included in your boarding pass, it's possible to avoid spending all together once you're sailing. Here are nine ways you can cruise on a tight budget.
- Bring your own wine and soda. Most cruises allow guests to bring up to one bottle of wine or champagne on board. I suggest enjoying it in your cabin rather than bringing it to the dining room to avoid corkage fees. You also have the option of bringing up to 12 sealed cans of soda in your carry-on to drink throughout your sail, since soft drinks are often an additional cost.
- Fill up on all the pizza and ice cream. Take full advantage of the 24-hour soft serve machines and complimentary pizza served on your ship. Your midnight snack and daily dessert are already covered right there.
- Unplug. Unless you're planning to get some work done, consider disconnecting for the duration of your sail. Not only is WiFi pricey, but it's also not as fast as you're used to while you're out in the middle of the ocean.
- Know what your ship offers for free. Your boarding pass usually includes free meals at the buffet, meals in the dining room, certain room service items, and free slices at the pizzeria and complimentary soft serve ice cream on some ships. However, all it takes is a little extra digging to see what else is available for no additional cost.
- Keep alcohol to a minimum. Alcohol is not included in your stay and this is where many guests end up splurging the most. All those cocktails can really add up by the end of the week, so consider signing up for an unlimited drinks package if a sober sail is out of the question. I recommend pre-purchasing your package before your sail date since it's typically cheaper than when you buy on board. And that way, you can start getting your money's worth ASAP.
- Pack buffet food on port days. Before disembarking at your destination, fill up on breakfast at the buffet and bring some bites for the road. Bananas, muffins, and mini boxes of cereal are great to snack on while exploring.
- Explore on your own instead of booking an excursion. Excursions can cost you around $50 to $150 per person. Not only does a DIY adventure save you major cash, but you'll also be able to avoid having to stick with a large group. Do some port research beforehand and pick your own activities.
- Save unfinished wine for the next night. If you order a bottle of wine at dinner and don't end up drinking it all, ask your waiter to cork it for when you return. They'll write your name on it and have it ready for you the next evening.
- Control yourself at the casino. One of my personal favorite cruise features is the casino (depending on the cruise), but that's also where most of my cash ends up. If you can, avoid it all together or set a strict spending limit at the very least.
Disney Just Revealed Some of the Epic Food and Merchandise Coming to Pixar Fest!
The countdown is on until Pixar Fest at Disneyland debuts April 13, but you can already get a look at some of the exciting things you'll see (and eat!). We all know it's not a special occasion without a new popcorn bucket, and Disney has delivered with an adorable Monster's Inc. Sully design. At the Fest, fans will also be able to get their hands on alien macarons (a nod to Toy Story of course), color-changing noodles from the Lucky Fortune Cookery in California Adventure, and themed cake pops. See photos from the first reveal ahead!
5 Reasons Cruises Give You the Most Bang For Your Buck
If you're looking for an affordable way to travel, consider booking a cruise for your next trip. Whether you're a couple, a group of friends, or a family of five, your boarding pass is packed with value that's hard to beat with traditional vacations. On top of being reasonably priced right off the bat, there are also plenty of ways to save cash once you're on board. Look ahead for why cruises are totally worth it!
1. You only need to pay for an in-state round-trip flight.
For popular destinations like the Bahamas, the Caribbean, and Mexico, cruises depart mainly from Galveston, TX, Charleston, SC, New Orleans, and multiple ports in Florida. Other destinations such as Mexico or Alaska typically require traveling to Los Angeles, CA, which still beats having to fly out of the country. However, if you're considering a European cruise, for example, you'll have to book a flight to Barcelona, Spain, where the closest port is located.
2. You can visit multiple cities, islands, and areas in one trip.
The best part about cruises hands down is the fact that you're able to see more with less effort. You don't have to worry about train rides or flights in between cities - simply wake up and find yourself in a new place. "It's a great way to maximize country exposure," Carnival Vista cruise director Matt Mitcham told POPSUGAR. "There aren't many vacations that let you hit three different ports or three different islands in six days." The one caveat is that you typically only have one day to get a taste of the area, but think of it as a sample: at the end of the trip, you can determine which places you want to return to or skip in the future.
3. It's surprisingly affordable!
For example, a five-day Eastern Caribbean sail on Carnival Triumph begins at a reasonable $282 per person. That includes your stateroom, food, ship amenities, and three port destinations all for the price of one! Prices may vary by ship, stateroom type, number of sail days, and ports, but considering the value of a single boarding pass, you're definitely getting your money's worth. Think about how much a hotel stay would cost you for five days!
4. It's all-inclusive.
Almost. Although alcohol and soft drinks (minus juices and coffee available at the buffet) aren't generally included your cabin rate, the buffet, dining room, ice cream machines, and pizzeria are. The specialty restaurants on your ship also require additional costs, but some (depending on the cruise) offer complimentary fare to guests during certain hours of the day. On Carnival Vista, for example, Jiji Asian Kitchen is a modern dining option at night while being a free Mongolian Wok during the day. If you stick to the what the cruise has to offer for free, you can actually avoid spending a dime more when you're on board.
5. One stateroom can fit up to five guests.
Don't underestimate the cozy size of your cabin - most ships feature staterooms with two additional pull-down beds and an optional trundle bed for the fifth guest. It may feel a bit cramped when your entire family is in the room at once, but honestly, you won't be spending much time in there. Think of it as an area solely for getting ready and sleeping and a great bonding experience.

Get a Glimpse of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge Before It Opens at Disney Parks in 2019!
The year 2019 still seems far, far away, but at least we now have a preview of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge to hold us over until opening day. On March 9, Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger revealed drone footage of one of the much-anticipated parks, which is to debut at both Disneyland and Disney World sometime next year. The construction progress is still a ways from completion, but seeing some the bones of the attractions come to life at the planet of Batuu has made us more excited than ever.
According to Disney Parks Blog, Star Wars land will be "one of the most detailed and immersive lands ever created in Disney Parks history." And once you see the expansive addition in the video above, you'll understand how that will be possible.
Parkgoers can expect to find life-size AT-AT walkers towering over the park, as well as two main attractions that "take detail and immersion to the next level": a secret mission that allows guests to control the Millennium Falcon, and an "epic" Star Wars battle between the First Order and the Resistance. Sounds amazing, right?
Watch the construction footage from Walt Disney World for an amazing preview of what's to come!
13 Top Tips For Traveling on Public Transport in London
Planning a trip to London? Don't get caught out spending too much on transport, or using the wrong routes. These tips will ensure you ride the tube (and the bus, and the train) like a Londoner.
Contactless Is Cheapest
Unless you're staying for a month or more, the cheapest and most convenient way to pay for travel is to use a Contactless card, like your debit or credit card. Just tap it on the yellow readers found on tube barriers, train and tram platforms, and buses. Travel will be capped to the same as a daily and weekly (Mon-Sun) travelcard for the zones you travel through. An Oyster card (a special card from Transport for London that you can top up with cash or load with a travelcard) is only capped daily at the moment, so it can work out more expensive over a week. However, if you're traveling from abroad it may be a worthwhile investment to avoid any foreign transaction fees on your debit or credit card. You can buy one from any station, for a refundable deposit around $6.
Don't Pay For More Zones Than You Need
If you're buying a travelcard, don't be fooled into spending a fortune on a zone 1-6 card "just in case". Unless you're planning to visit somewhere like Hampton Court Palace, it's highly unlikely you'll ever leave zones 1 and 2. Tourist favorites like Hampstead Heath, Notting Hill and Portobello, and Camden Market are all within zones 1 and 2.
Learn When to Tap Out
On the tube, DLR, and trains, you'll need to tap out as well as tapping in with your card. If you forget to do this, you could be overcharged for your journey. However, you don't have to tap out on London buses or the Croydon tramlink, as the fee for each journey is the same no matter how long you ride.
In Central London, It Can Be Faster to Walk
The tube map doesn't show the distance between stations accurately, and some tube stations are much closer than you think. This includes one of the most popular tourists journeys in London: Leicester Square to Covent Garden. You can walk this journey in minutes by heading down Long Acre, and it's much quicker than navigating the two busy tube stations (one of which has a notoriously busy and temperamental lift). Another famously close pairing is Charing Cross and Embankment. TFL has now produced a brilliant walking tube map that shows the average walking time between stations.
Don't Forget That Your Ticket Goes Beyond Just the Tube
A travelcard or PAYG Oyster or contactless card will let you travel on multiple forms of London transport, not just the tube. Sometimes getting a train can be quicker - want to go to Borough Market from the West End? A train from Charing Cross to London Bridge might be faster than trying to find a connection to the Jubilee or Northern line. You may be able to get to Richmond on a train from Waterloo in a fraction of the time it would take to ride the District Line. And don't forget buses: they'll allow you to see where you're going and get your bearings in a way the tube never will.
Some Bus Routes Make Great Budget Tours
I'm a huge London bus advocate. When I first moved to London, I didn't even pay for a travelcard, I just got a bus pass! It helped me learn the layout of the city and discover all manner of shortcuts I'd never know otherwise. If you don't fancy or can't afford an open-top bus tour, ride the top deck of a London bus and take in the sights for $2! There are loads of options, but I'd recommend two to start you off: the 10 from Hammersmith takes in Kensington, Knightsbridge, Hyde Park Corner, Marble Arch, and Oxford Street. The 88 takes you from Camden Town down into central London, via Trafalgar Square, through beautiful Westminster down to Pimlico for the Tate Britain. Jump off there for a spot of art or stay on until Clapham Common for my favorite South London secret, gelato at Nardulli's.
London Buses Are Cash Free
Another reason to embrace contactless payment: you can no longer pay your fare in cash on the bus. You'll need to tap in on one of the card readers. The new hopper fare means if you transfer between multiple buses (or trams) within an hour, you'll only get charged once (but remember to still tap in each time), which is a bonus given that it's not unknown for them to change their destination after you've got on!
Be Careful Where You Stand
If you want to ingratiate yourself with the locals, learn the rules of public transport. Always stand on the right on escalators at stations: this allows people to rush past on the left. This is an actual rule, not just British politeness! When you get to your platform be sure to move along, don't gather at the entrance blocking other people. There are tube maps all the way along the platform if you're unsure where you're going. On buses, don't stand in the doorway, either at the exit or by the driver, for obvious reasons!
Don't Get Caught Out at the Airport
If you're flying into London, check the airport website for travel information before you set off. Though there may be Oyster barriers at airport train stations, not all routes to and from airports accept Oyster / Contactless for payment, and most airports have two train options, a more expensive "express" train and a cheaper but slower stopping service. You'll need the right ticket for the train you're on or you could face a big fine. London Heathrow is the only airport with a tube station.
Avoid Peak Time If You Can
The commuting hours of 8-9.30 and 5-7pm are very, very busy and if you're not used to the scrum, it can be overwhelming. Commuters have little time for tourists who hold them up on their way to work / home. Try to organize your day so you don't need to use the busiest stations during these times (think mainline rail connections and hubs where multiple lines meet like Oxford Circus, Leicester Square, and Bank). The worst thing you can do in the early evening is make short trips in the center of town (Oxford Circus to Piccadilly Circus, for example) in large groups, or with piles of bulky shopping bags. Walk, wait a bit or take a bus if you can!
Don't Stand in Stupid Places
Trains and tube carriages and buses get busy. Even if it's quiet when you get on, it won't last. Move down, take seats if they're available, and for the love of Prince Harry, please don't lean your entire body against the poles that are designed for people to hold on to!
Shhhh!
Though most people will happily help you if you have a question about your journey, in general Londoners aren't exactly chatty on public transport. You'll recognize them by their headphones, or the fact their head is stuck in a book or a newspaper. Sorry if you think that's rude, but it's just the way things are! The worst thing you can do is engage a Londoner in what you think is a friendly conversation about how busy and hot the tube is and how you "can't believe" they use it every day at rush hour.
Keep a Lid on Your Booze
There aren't many places you can't drink alcohol in London, but public transport is one of them. New rules came into place a few years ago, which mean you can get fined for carrying open bottles of alcohol on tubes and buses. Plenty of folks still take their chances, but it's probably not worth the risk. Save it until you get off the tube or bus and head for the nearest pub! The rules on trains are slightly different and vary depending on the operator.

If you're a Disney fan, you've undoubtedly made the pilgrimage to Disneyland or Walt Disney World at some point in your life. Disney mania couldn't be contained when parks eventually opened in Florida, Japan, France, and Hong Kong. Today, there is construction on a sixth park: Shanghai Disney. While every Disney park maintains a similar atmosphere, the magic feeling at each location is totally unique. Take a look at the features that make each Disney resort special, and then decide for yourself which is truly the "happiest place on earth."
Rome Was Hit by a Rare Snowstorm, and the Photos Are Completely Beautiful
When in Rome, you're supposed to "do as the Romans do." And right now, that might mean partaking in an impromptu snowball fight. Meteorologists have dubbed a weather phenomenon hailing from Siberia as the "Beast From the East," and on Monday it hit Rome, causing schools and businesses to shut down in the face of the rare snowfall in Italy's capital.
Based on photos and videos of the snow-covered city, Rome wears white quite well. The last time Rome saw snow was in 2012. The cold snap has also brought with it unseasonably chilly temperatures, and much of Europe, including the UK, is feeling the effects of the so-called "beast." Check out stunning photos of the historical streets of Rome covered in a beautiful blanket of snow.

Don't Look Down: Traveling With Anxiety as a Flight Attendant
Before working as a flight attendant, I was able to use yoga to keep my anxiety under control. Over the past couple of years my new, high-stress job has invited my anxiety to creep back in. It rose to an all time high last Summer, when I had frequent panic attacks before work and an anxiety-induced headache that lasted two weeks. I became convinced that I could no longer fly. However, with a lot of trial and error, I figured out a few ways to calm the storm in my mind. I still have anxiety, but it no longer controls me. While I am by no means a therapist or psychiatrist (I'm just a yoga teacher turned flight attendant with anxiety!), here are my favorite tips for traveling with anxiety that I've found helpful - and hopefully you will, too.
1. Wear Ear Plugs
One of the reasons we get so stressed and anxious when we fly is due to the intense sound waves that raise the cortisol (stress hormone) levels in our body. Sounds above 85 decibels (sound waves at common cruising altitude) are harmful and long exposure can cause hearing problems. With decibels peaking at 90 to 140 during take off and landing, wearing ear plugs helps to maintain healthy hearing, as well as calm the nervous system.
2. Practice Grounding
Grounding is the simple act of walking around with your feet in the grass, ocean, soil, or whatever natural footing is available in your new destination. The practice has been scientifically proven to balance the energy in your body with the positive charge from the earth. It helps tremendously with jet lag, which can often set off anxiety.
3. Meditate
It doesn't have to be fancy. If you're a novice, start with your eyes closed, take 10 slow breaths in and out of your nose, and try to focus on the sensation of your breath. Count your breaths if you get too distracted. Meditation is a fabulous way to ease the physical symptoms of anxiety (increased heart rate, shortness of breath, sweaty palms, etc).
4. When You Can Sleep, Try to Sleep as Well as Possible
Things that help me are ear plugs, an eye mask, and lavender oil. The ear plugs ensure no noisy ice machines or loud party guests next door wake you. The eye mask helps your body's circadian rhythm sync to whichever time zone you are in. The lavender oil allows the senses to calm.
5. Hydrate!
Buy water, bring a water bottle to fill, or freeze it to get it through security (trust me, it works!). Having water on hand helps to keep your brain functioning properly and takes the stress out of waiting in line to buy some.
6. Find a Quiet Space in the Airport
This can be extremely difficult at times, but it is worth the hunt. These days, several airports have either a chapel/mediation room and or even a yoga room! If your airport does not have these rooms, look for a quiet hallway. Hint: they're generally between terminals.
Airports with yoga rooms:
- San Francisco Airport (SFO)
- Chicago O'Hare Airport (ORD)
- Chicago Midway Airport (MDW)
- Dallas-Fort Worth Airport (DFW)
- Burlington Airport (BTV)
- Sioux Falls Airport (FSD)
- Helsinki Airport (HEL)
- London Heathrow Airport (LHR)
- Frankfurt Airport (FRA)
7. Pack Snacks
Plan ahead as to not rely on airport food. Some airports have decent options, but having all of your meals and or snacks with you (as much as possible) will take some of the anxiety out of the trip.
8. Take Your Meds!
Maybe this should have been number one. I never had a prescription for Xanax until I became a flight attendant. If you think you have an anxiety disorder you should talk to your doctor, especially if you travel frequently. If you are against taking any prescription drugs (which I definitely understand), try Maca root. This ancient Peruvian root is an adaptogen (a substance that may increase resistance to stress) and also a proven mood enhancer.
9. Have a Support System
Have some of your best friends and/or therapists on call for you. It helps if you can have someone on call who also experiences anxiety. There are an increasing amount of therapy apps as well that are less expensive than cognitive therapy (such as Better Help).

14 Grocery Staples I Always Have as a 20-Something on a Budget
As a 25-year-old who has just started out in the professional world, I know how hard it can be to get your life together. You're supposed to find a job, live on your own, cook for yourself, and find the time to exercise, which, unfortunately, I don't think includes walking to the kitchen for snack breaks in between TV episodes. When you have so much going on - especially when you're on a budget - one thing that some people dread is grocery shopping. I personally love it, but it took a little practice to figure out a routine and a grocery list that worked for me. As someone who loves to cook, there are certain things I like to have on hand all the time. These are 14 budget-approved staples I always have stocked in my kitchen.

Olive Garden Now Has Pasta Nachos With Alfredo Drizzle and We're Not Mad About It
Olive Garden has found a way to bring two of the best food groups together: pasta and nachos. From Jan. 29 through April 1, Olive Garden will offer new Loaded Pasta Chips on its menu, and they're the Italian-inspired nachos you never knew you needed. The Loaded Pasta Chips are lightly fried pasta chips topped with Italian cheeses and meat sauce made with chicken, meatballs, and sausage, and they're finished with cherry peppers and an alfredo drizzle. Tater tot nachos who?! This is the wildest, most weirdly perfect cheese-topped, carb-based snack.
Launching in the spirit of the Super Bowl - aka the best excuse to eat game-day appetizers - Olive Garden wants people to be able to re-create the Loaded Pasta Chips at home, too. To make them, just cut sheets of lasagna noodles into three equal pieces for the "chips," heat oil in a pan and fry them until crispy, drain the excess oil on paper towels, gently toss the chips in garlic salt, and add your favorite toppings. Over-the-top snacks are the real MVP!
Demi Dropped 50 Pounds For a Bikini Competition but Wasn't Happy Until She Gained It Back
Losing weight doesn't always involve a straight line. There can be huge bumps and zigzags along the way, and it can take some people years to find a healthy lifestyle that works for them. Demetra Eftimiades (Demi) should know; she's had a series of ups and downs in her own wellness journey. Learn about her struggles to lose - and gain - weight and how she finally found balance.
Demi's journey began in December 2015 and at a weight of 160 pounds. She told POPSUGAR that after a horrible breakup, she felt depressed and lost her appetite. She ended up dropping just over 30 pounds in less than three months. "The breakup took a lot away from me. I was lost and didn't know who I was anymore," Demi told POPSUGAR. "I had worked so hard to please this other person that I lost myself in the process. During those three months I began to find myself again and came back twice as strong."
After losing those first 30 pounds, Demi shared that, "because of a lack of food and excessive cardio," she dropped even more weight. Her lifestyle became very strict and unhealthy, tracking every little calorie she consumed - she became worried about gaining the weight back. She was previously very unhappy with her body image and did everything in her power to prevent that.
Demi shared, "To further worsen the situation [in Summer 2015], I decided to compete in a bodybuilding competition, which was even more strict than the previous lifestyle I had been living. I would diet for six days straight and then have one high-calorie day where I would practically binge to the point where I could not move because my stomach pain had been so bad." That's when Demi dropped to her lowest weight at 109 pounds, after training 18 weeks for her first bikini bodybuilding competition.
Once she finished training for that competition, Demi said she "felt and looked emaciated." She knew this lifestyle was unhealthy, and she was unhappy that she'd lost so much muscle mass. "I didn't like how I felt weak doing daily activities," so by 2017, she began reverse dieting and using weights to build muscle and strength.
"This is when I saw my weight beginning to creep back up on the scale. I won't lie, it was a very hard thing to let go of. My entire life I had worked towards lowering the number on the scale and now all of a sudden I had to be OK with that number increasing." Demi knew that the numbers going up meant she was gaining muscle, which was her goal. During her last bulk, she saw that number go up to 148 pounds. Now, she maintains her weight around 130, and she's proud of her muscle and how much she can lift!
Lifting weights and working with several coaches over the past couple years led Demi to a new, healthier, sustainable lifestyle that involves intuitive eating and moderate exercise. She stopped tracking calories and macros altogether and started eating when she was hungry and until she was satisfied.
Demi said that eating intuitively "has been my savior" in regard to easing her mind about not having to worry about numbers - on the scale, calories, or macros. She's learned that she can still meet her goals and be happy - she doesn't have to live a strict and unhealthy lifestyle.
Here's what a typical day looks like. You'll notice that Demi practices intermittent fasting. She does the 16:8 method, choosing to skip breakfast.
Wake up: coffee, milk, Stevia
12-2 p.m.: first meal with an abundance of chicken, veggies, rice, and fruit
2-4 p.m.: tea or coffee with a protein bar
7-9 p.m.: large dinner with meat, veggies, and carbs
Dessert: small bowl of zero percent fat Greek yogurt with granola, fruit, and Stevia + (if still hungry) Eddy's Slow Churned Ice Cream!
As for workouts now, Demi hits the gym three to four times a week and focuses on strength training. She also throws in some cardio sessions here and there.
Throughout her five-year journey, Demi is happy that she's finally found a healthy balance of exercise and diet that fits her lifestyle. She said, "I have come to love my body throughout every stage in life over the years and have learned not to worry about the number on a scale."
Two things she wants to share that she wishes she'd realized during her journey are "don't do too much too soon" and "learn to appreciate your own body." Demi says that striving to look like someone else or have someone else's body is a lost cause, because you are you! Tell yourself every day that you are beautiful just the way you are.
It's OK to have body goals, but you want to make sure that you're achieving them in a healthy, sustainable way. Find an expert to offer help and support - you don't have to go at this on your own. If your struggle with weight is putting your mental or physical health at risk, please talk to someone.

My 6-Month CrossFit Transformation Isn't What I Thought It'd Be
I wasn't going to write this post. I didn't want to share these photos. I felt too embarrassed. But it was for that reason that I felt compelled to. You see, when I started my CrossFit journey to getting completely ripped, I was convinced that after six months, I'd have amazing transformation photos to share. But as you can see, I don't.
I could have chosen to not share them, to wait a year, or however long it took to get the six-pack abs I'm working so hard toward, but I feel like these transformation photos are even more important to share than ones that are jaw-droppingly impressive. Because they show that losing weight and getting toned takes time, and probably more time than you want it to.
Losing weight and getting toned takes time, and probably more time than you want it to.
When progress doesn't go as quickly as expected, it can be so damn frustrating. I actually quit CrossFit for a few days after three months. I was pissed that I was getting up at 4:50 a.m. five days a week to go to class, eating clean, and my body wasn't getting close to where I wanted it to be. I still had my baby belly, and I actually gained weight and my muscles grew. I was thicker all around, and even my sports bras were feeling tighter. WTH!
But my husband talked me down off my "I hate CrossFit" ledge and said, "First of all, you look amazing. And I can totally tell you're getting stronger. But CrossFit isn't just about what it's doing to your body, it's how you feel." And that's true. I loved how badass I felt snatching bars over my head and slamming medicine balls to the floor, and how my heart thumped in my chest and sweat dripped off my nose while doing a bazillion burpees. I loved how energetic and confident I felt when I came home from class, and how that set the tone for my entire day. I'm happier when I work out regularly, and that spreads out into my life, my work, and my relationships.
I also talked to a ton of women about how I was feeling. I told them, "I've gained weight, everything has gotten bigger, including my butt, and my jeans are tighter." They felt the same way, that they didn't love their huge muscles at first, but now they do because it means they're strong. Some of the women even said they wished their muscles were bigger, and now they just care about what their bodies can do, and what their goals are like to squat more weight, or do higher box jumps.
Doing CrossFit for six months has taught me one unexpected lesson that I feel like I've been trying to learn my entire life. To love my body. To genuinely feel proud of what it can do, and to not poke and prod at it for what society tells me it's supposed to look like.
I just turned 40 years old, and it's taken me a lifetime and two pregnancies to get my body to this point, so how could I expect everything to change in just six months? Even though I don't see the physical progress I thought I would in half a year of intense workouts, five days a week, the progress I see in what my body can do is what's become my focus.
I've hit some pretty monumental goals like climbing a 15-foot rope, doing my first strict pull-up, and a handstand push-up, and that feeling of pride has overcome my feelings of insecurity about my flabby, wrinkly baby belly. It's given me this newfound confidence and inspiration to become even stronger. It feels like for most of my life, I've been in a constant battle with myself, to do everything possible to shrink down and take up less space, but I actually like the feeling of taking up more.
So what if I'm not where I want to be? I'm getting there, right? And I'll continue to take progress photos each month so that one day I'll look back on these six-month pictures and see how this was just one step in my journey to becoming the strongest, best version of me.
And even though sharing these photos of me not quite reaching my goals is a little mortifying, the one thing that makes it easy is to think that someone on their own weight-loss or fitness journey relates to my story, and finds inspiration to keep pushing themselves and celebrate every moment of progress, no matter how small they think it is.
I Did a 2-Minute Plank Every Day For 2 Weeks - Here's What Happened
When my team at POPSGUAR asked who wanted to try a plank challenge, my hand shot up. But back in my day (lol) when I was in college, a "plank challenge" consisted of taking photos of yourself lying face down, stiff as a board, somewhere crazy (it was a weird internet thing in the late 2000s). It was fun! This recent plank challenge however, was . . . not as fun.
I decided on challenging myself to hold a two-minute plank daily for 14 days to see if I'd notice any physical or mental differences by the end. While I was definitely feeling some toned and strong abdominal muscles, my biggest takeaway was about setting goals. Here are some things to expect on your own plank challenge.
You Can Customize It
Tip number one for this challenge: you can make it your own. I set mine to be a two-minute challenge because it felt like something I could do every day. Hard, but not so bad that I couldn't complete other workouts.
Additionally, pick a position that feels just challenging enough for your body and still accommodates for any discomfort or injury. I began this challenge in a high plank (top of a push-up), but a few days in, I decided it wasn't challenging enough, so I lowered myself on down to an elbow plank and finally felt a little bit of muscle shaking (woo!).
It Doesn't Get Easier
In two weeks time, doing a two-minute plank daily did not become a breeze. I had anticipated that a plank would feel like a cakewalk by the end of day 14, but alas . . . it was just as challenging as day 10, day four, etc.
You'll Feel Stronger in Other Workouts
One thing that I appreciated was the abdominal activation that ended up happening in my other workouts. I became acutely aware of my core and how I was using it in everything from strength training to SoulCycle. I did end up feeling like I had a stronger base from which to work off of - and since you use your core in basically everything, this was a nice little benefit of the plank challenge.
Feeling good about my strength and muscle from these planks!
You'll Want to Set an Alarm
I found that to keep myself consistent, it was important to set a reminder on my calendar. This ensured that I got it done every day and stayed on top of my small goal.
Two Minutes Is More Powerful Than You'd Think
One great thing I learned from this little experiment is that every minute in your day can be used for something powerful. How are you maximizing your day? What are you using each minute and each moment for? What are you wasting time on? Even a minute here or there dedicated to something that doesn't serve you can add up over time and deplete your emotional and physical energy. Channel your minutes into something that serves you.
You'll Learn the Importance of Setting Small Goals
If you're anything like me, you set BIG goals for yourself and often overlook the value of smaller ones. This was a lesson in not taking those smaller goals for granted and not undervaluing the power of adding something like this to your routine. If I can do a two-minute plank every day, what else can I do? Can I add two minutes of meditation every day? Maybe I could add one more strength-training move!
This small bit of goal setting reminded me of my recent conversation with celeb trainer and Revenge Body star Latreal Mitchell. "Limit yourself, and set realistic goals," she told me. "Set a goal for yourself that every day for one week, you're going to wake up early enough to eat breakfast." She noted that this was essentially the key to weight-loss success, but it didn't really hit home for me until I experienced my own minivictory.
If You're Exercising to Lose Weight, Don't Make These 5 Mistakes
You're getting into a routine at the gym, feeling stronger and working up a sweat, but you're not losing weight, which is one of the main reasons you started exercising in the first place. What gives?! Here are five common mistakes people make when working out that can prevent weight loss.
You're Only Doing Cardio
While it's true that cardio is great for burning calories, if you only run, bike ride, or swim, there's a missing link to maximizing your calorie burn: strength training. The more muscle you have, the higher your body's fat-burning potential, and weight training will help you burn more fat faster. That means you can do shorter workouts and get better results.
You're Skipping Intense Workouts
If you've heard of high-intensity interval training (HIIT), it's because it works! Experts agree that it's one of the best workouts for weight loss. This works for cardio and strength training and involves following a work-to-rest ratio, a popular one being two to one. That could be 40 seconds of working at 70 to 90 percent of your max followed by 20 seconds of rest. An example of HIIT could be running, biking, jumping rope, rowing, or swimming with sprint or hill intervals included, and/or a mix of strength-training moves like burpees, squats, plyometrics exercises like jumping lunges, or push-ups.
You're Inconsistent
A 20-minute walk once a day is great for getting blood flowing and getting fresh air, but it's not enough if you're trying to lose weight. The same goes for a yoga class or jog here and there - you need to be hitting the gym regularly for about 45 minutes, three to four times a week in order to see results. Commit to that if you're serious about slimming down.
Your Workouts Are Always the Same
If you've been working out and your weight loss has plateaued, it's a sign that you need to mix things up. When you do the same workout three to five times a week, your muscles become accustomed to it, so you need to tweak your workouts at least every six weeks. Or even better, do something different every time you work out. CrossFit or boot-camp-style workouts are great examples of this.
You're Not Paying Attention to What You Eat
What you do after your workout is important, too. Exercising regularly can often make you hungrier that usual, and you think "I worked out so I can eat anything I want!" Uh, nope! If you end up eating an enormous post-workout ice cream cone protein smoothie, or an extra couple snacks throughout the day, your calorie intake vs. calorie burn has evened out. In order to lose weight, you need to create a calorie deficit, so make sure you're not taking in the same amount of extra calories that you just burned.
Kori's Postpartum 34-Pound Weight Loss Started by Giving Up These 2 Common Foods
After Kori gave birth to her third child, she felt like she was ready to change up her diet and get her body back. While some people may follow a strict diet in order to lose weight, Kori didn't follow any diet whatsoever. All she did was cut back on certain foods (which you'll read more about below) and start working out more regularly. She's lost over 30 pounds already, and she feels better than ever!
Kori: Before
POPSUGAR: When did you start your weight-loss journey? What made you decide to?
Kori Burland: I started my weight-loss journey at Shred415 in January of 2017 after a long break during the pregnancy of my third child. He was 3 months old, and I was ready to feel good, be healthy, and get a version of my old body back.
PS: What was your starting weight?
KB: My starting weight was 157 pounds.
PS: How much weight have you lost so far?
KB: I have lost 34 pounds, and it took me about eight months to lose it.
Kori: After
PS: How did you do it? Did you follow a specific diet?
"I was ready to feel good, be healthy, and get a version of my old body back."
KB: I didn't follow a specific diet but started making more conscious and healthy choices. I began by minimizing unhealthy snacks and processed foods.
PS: Did you do a specific workout type or schedule?
KB: I take classes at Shred415, which is a 60-minute interval training class switching between treadmill and strength training. When I first started my fitness journey, I would go to Shred415 two to three times a week. Now I go to Shred415 three to four times a week, as well as attend Pilates and yoga classes whenever possible. I started at Shred415 in January with an ending treadmill warmup pace of 5.8 mph and told myself to increase my starting speed by 0.1 mph after one or two weeks. Setting small goals like that for myself helps keep me motivated.
"When I took my 'before' picture last January, I was embarrassed."
PS: What are some nonscale victories you've experienced?
KB: It's fun shopping for clothes and getting dressed again. I also feel like an athlete, which is a great victory for me, and I'm able to run much faster than when I started.
PS: How do you stay motivated?
KB: The instructors at Shred415 are the best at what they do. I hear them in my head all the time when I'm running and working out: "You are stronger than you think you are" and "You never know what you can do until you try!" I also make sure to remind myself often that I'm the only person who can do this for myself. Throughout this journey, my sister has been a huge motivator for me; we help each other stay committed to working out. The whole Shred415 community is extremely supportive!
Kori: Before
PS: What does a typical day of eating look like for you?
"My advice is just to start. Find something you enjoy doing and that has a good community and try it."
KB: I usually wake up and have something small, like half of a banana or half of an RXBAR. After attending my Shred415 class, I enjoy a Daily Harvest smoothie made with a plant-based protein powder. For lunch, my routine varies. I either eat vegetables or something fast, like rolled-up deli turkey. In the afternoon, I usually have a snack of beef jerky or popcorn. For dinner, I usually eat a lean protein, berries, and a vegetable, but truthfully, I am working on this area. With three kids five years old and under, it can be difficult to cook a meal for the whole family. I just started working with a nutritionist to find easy, healthy, fast meals that everyone will like.
Kori: After
PS: Any advice or tips for people on their own journey?
KB: I think my advice is just to start. Find something you enjoy doing and that has a good community and try it. When I took my "before" picture last January, I was embarrassed. I understood I had three kids, one of whom was a little baby, but still you see so many pictures on social media of moms who have a baby and are able to rock a bikini by three months postpartum. However, that wasn't me, and I didn't feel good about myself. I found myself motivated to make a change, so I jumped right in. I'm so lucky I had Shred415 to guide me through. I know that as long as I can get myself to the class and follow what the instructor says, I will feel amazing when I leave - and I do!
PS: Anything else you want to share?
KB: I want everyone to know that the reason I am sharing my story is to give someone else the confidence that they can make this change as well.
